Takashi Hagino & Aizawa Kazunari: After 4 years, a date in Harajuku

Hey you two, how are you doing these days? It's been 4 years since the end of the broadcast. You two had a fateful encounter in "Choukou Senshi Changerion," an unusual heroic show that still remains popular to this day. We asked Takashi Hagino and Kazunari Aizawa, who say they still get along well with each other, about their memories of those days, and what their future plans are.

"I'm going to say it now. I mean it, I'm really going to say it right now! Changerion was really entertaining! It was truly a masterpiece! Suzumura Akira, a happy go lucky, good natured, 182cm tall, cat eyed, beautiful private investigator, and his partner, Hayami Katsuhiko, a 183cm tall, hot blooded and direct individual with a handsome face, are both on the side of justice. Kuroiwa Shogo, the Dark Knight, is an elite who's handsome, also quite tall I guess, and is running for governor of Tokyo in order to seize control of the city. A slapstick comedy and super cool tokusatsu hero show, with a mixture of fiction and reality, something like this most definitely existed in 1996 Tokyo. On the day of this interview, I was so excited to hear their voices saying, "Good morning~!" The appearance of those two standing there looked really really cool! And so begins the converstions full of laughter between Takashi Hagino, who plays the main character Suzumura Akira, and Aizawa Kazunari, who plays his partner Hayami Katsuhiko."

-Casting!! Secret Stories?-

Hagino: At that time, the role was the same as it always was, wasn't it? I went to a party at some production company, and someone was like, "Ah, you there," and told to come in for an audition. When I went to it, Shirakura-san, the producer, and Nagaishi-san, the main director, were smiling ear to ear once they saw me. I remember thinking, "What, why are you smiling like that?" I was 22 at the time of my debut, so it was about 5-6 years after I dropped out of high school. Before that, the movies that came out around that time made me think that acting was really interesting.

"You've also appeared in a V-Cinema that contains slightly adult content."

Hagino: It's bad. Please don't watch it (laughs). Watch something else where I look cool.

Kazunari: For me, I had just started acting, and my manager took me to Toei's head office to introduce myself. I announced that I was new and would be in their care, and then a strange old man came up to me and said, "Are you the one?" (everyone laughs).

Hagino: Wait! Was he trying to flirt with you?!

Kazunari: Uh, no, you see, my shoelaces became untied in the hallway, so I had to sit on the floor to retie them. He came up to me and said, "What's wrong?" I said, "Ah, no, I'm an actor," and he said, "Come with me then!" Things got carried away, and before I knew it, I went in for an audition.

Hagino: So, who was that guy?

Kazunari: He was……a really good guy to say the least, I actually don't remember his name.

Hagino: You're terrible! (laughs).

Kazunari: No, no. Look, it's because, it's just…anyway, so, at first, I was reading the script without knowing which one of us would play the role. Then, when it was down to just a few people, they asked me, "Which role do you want to play?" I was like, "Well, Hayami, I guess." I wondered if this was it, and then I passed, I passed……huh.

Hagino: Can we get some more joy here?

Kazunari: Well, it's because I really didn't understand. I didn't really feel it when I was suddenly told that I got the job. What's more, I still had no idea how hard it was going to be. No, rather, you really don't know what's going to happen in this world.

"Thank goodness for untied shoelaces and nice people"

-I'm not awkward!-

Hagino: I was asked to read my lines in front of everyone. Naturally, the producer told me that in the future, he would never have me read my lines at the audition for a leading role ever again (everyone laughs). No, I thought it went really well, and while I was a favorite to play this role, somehow I was also the worst. One of the more important people there looked as if he was going "?" all while tilting his head. He looked really nervous. He said, "From now on, when we present leading role auditions to the higherups, we won't make them read lines." He also said, "If you go with this guy, then shut him up and pick him already."

"It's true, Akira's acting wasn't very good, and I felt so embarrassed watching that I wasn't even able to finish the first episode. But, I could never think of anyone else playing Suzumura Akira but Takashi Hagino, and I still think that way after seeing him again after four years."

Hagino: But, back then, I definitely had some momentum. I was always told "You're a perfect fit for the role of Akira!," and a part of me got carried away over it, it felt like my nose was growing just like Pinocchio, except this nose is of brilliant glass. If Pinocchio's nose was made of glass, it would be really beautiful and sparkling.

"He smiles cheerfully and says that such things give him "the power" to play a role."

Hagino: But, you know, it's going to break someday. When that happens, only then will you understand.

"Afterall, Akira, aren't you suppost to be an adult?"

-First Impressions-

Hagino: We first met in an elevator, right?

Kazunari: Yeah, it was in an elevator. When I was on my way to the audition area.

Hagino: I said, "Huh? What's with the long hair?"

Kazunari: Yeah, it was really long.

Hagino: Incredibly long, it was tied in a single knot, along with wearing black jeans and a black shirt. I noticed him and asked, "What floor?" He said, "8th floor, hurry it up."

Kazunari: You liar! No, I politely said, "I'm going to the 8th floor, please."

Hagino: Well, I don't know, I guess that's just how bad my impression of you was (laughs).

Kazunari: Somehow, I never thought that the two of us would be working together.

Hagino: Yeah, I had costume fitting, and they told me that my partner was coming, and then the absolute worst guy came walking in.

Kazunari: Hey now (laughs).

Hagino: Because we seemed so similar in type, I thought there was no way the two of us would be together. Then he came in. And, as you can see, he's handsome, incredibly so. And…uwah. He stands out just by standing still. I really have to do my best here. Even still, I feel good with this guy. I can't imagine anyone else, as I'm already spoiled being stuck with him.

"Oh? Hayami is smiling shyly as he listens."

-Dramatic Drunks-

Hagino: When we drink together, we end up staying up until morning, right?

Kazunari: Yeah, when I see him, all he does is drink.

Hagino: When drunk, this guy tries jumping backwards. He gets really mad. When he stomps, it makes a nice sound.

Kazunari: I see… (pretending not to know)

Hagino: I end up joining him (grinning)

Kazunari: It seems I do alot of unacceptable things.

Hagino: Not really. He says that like I'm trying to wring it out of him. Well, guess I'll just go home then… (walks straight past him)

Kazunari: I do drink abit too much.

Hagino: I feel like a fighter when it comes to alcohol. I'm trying not to lose my memory here.

Kazunari: This guy makes people drink all the time. He'll ask, "Want some sake?" It seems I don't drink for myself, rather, I only drink due to the influence of other people. (to Hagino) Hey, you, you're the reason I always end up getting drunk.

"As usual, they are the best of friends."

-Acting, Theatre and Films-

Kazunari: Basically, about halfway through Changerion's filming, my impression of him was, "Ah, this guy, he's actually really serious.

"Oh? Somehow, Akira looks very happy."

Hagino: That's because, you know, it took me a long time to properly get into the role.

Kazunari: In our current ranks, we don't get into such big roles on TV or movies. I often get a role at the last minute, and have to act on the spot, so I think that because I can practice for a month on stage, movies really require alot of power in comparison.

Hagino: It's definitely different from Changerion, where we could say, "Let's take our time and work on it." I won't be able to make it if I try to wing it. But, if you ask me if I can act in the moment, I can't play the role of a big shot, because I think it wouldn't come off as authentic, but it'll be the best I can do, so it's important to know how much you can work with in such a short period of time.

Kazunari: I think about it alot. When I get a role, I'll think about it for a long time, doing research by watching similar movies, reading books, and so on, then, build up an image. Finally, once on set, adjust it as I see fit.

Hagino: My perception of acting has changed. I'll still watch the videos, and think, "Wow, I really did it~." But, there are also scenes where I'll say, "Oh, I don't think I can do this now." There are so many scenes like that. Although, it's a great opportunity to get into the swing of things, because you end up transforming yourself. The more I got into the rhythm, my surroundings were also in rhythm, so I was able to stay on track. Changerion was a a unique experience, and I don't think I could have done it alone.

Kazunari: The final broadcast was on Christmas, right?

Hagino: For some reason, I don't want to talk about the final episode. It went something like, I drank alot before the shoot and just had alot of fun, since we basically had a day off…

"Does this mean you were having a rough time before the end of the broadcast?"

Hagino: No, no, that's not it. We had about four days off before we started shooting, and I'd never had such a holiday weekend before, so I got alittle too relaxed.

"Does that mean things ended on good terms?"

Hagino: Yeah ❤️, that's how it felt. That's why I don't want to remember.

Kazunari: Like-I-was-say-ing, you…

Hagino: No, no! For me it may be just a past memory, but it's an important one.

Kazunari: Yeah, it was alot of fun.

"Never ending stories and overflowing emotions. I was happy to meet them. Changerion, beyond time…and for all eternity."

Changérion Bible - Aizawa Kazunari interview

Hayami Katsuhiko is a just and handsome hero cadet who failed to become the righteous hero Changéríon. He is a hot-blooded and frank guy with seriousness as his strong point, but he is quite a klutz. He is supposed to save the day, but is instead saved, and he partners up with Akira in an odd but funny two-man team before he knows it, yet he's a superhero who dreams big… In reality, however, he is an aggressive and fiery young man who moved to Tokyo when he was drunk.

"I honestly can't believe that Changéríon was such a memorable work for so many people."

-Like Hayami, who played the role in the past, he says so with a mysterious look on his face. However, contrary to his own feelings, he says he is still receiving feedback from various sources.

"The other day, I was participating in a theater workshop."

-It was a full-fledged one, inviting a teacher from England for professionals.

"There were about 10 participants, some of whom were from Bungeiza, Daisan Erotica, and former members of Yume no Yuuminsha, so it was quite exciting. On the last day, one of them told me that they had seen Changéríon. I was surprised. They seemed to have been thinking for a long time about when they were going to say it, since it was the last day. That's when I realized that someone had seen it."

-It was the same thing on stage.

"Sometimes people who have been fans since the Changéríon days come to watch me, which is kind of incredible."

-He confesses that he never intended to become an actor in the first place.

"I know I'm being cheeky, but I just didn't like the normal routine."

-It all started with a movie. He happened to see a film on holiday that was so romantic and interesting that he wanted to play such a role.

"The name of the work is too faddist, so I won't tell you. But I like romantic stories. That's why I often watch romantic movies."

-He was born and raised in Miyagi Prefecture. After graduating from high school, he took it for granted that he would work for a local company.

"That was a very nice place to work, everyone was kind, and I was blessed."

-He was assigned to a factory. He wore a uniform and did the same work day in and day out.

"…I am embarrassed to say this, but one day I saw my reflection in the glass as I was working in my uniform. I am now living with my parents, and I can see a future where I will get a wife, build a house, and have children. And I wondered if that was what I wanted."

-He went for a drink with agonizing thoughts and then went straight into action.

"I drank until morning and took the bullet train to Tokyo first thing in the morning (laughs)."

-It was truly an "impulse."

"One thing I remember very well was the news of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait that was playing at Tokyo Station. It was still early in the morning, but people were gathering around the TVs in the storefronts, and I wondered what was going on. Oh, it's war, they said."

-That day the Gulf War broke out. Unbeknownst to others, his life also changed dramatically.

"That was when I was 20 or 21. I moved in and lived at my senior's house for a while, but my parents scolded me. They said, "It's your choice to go to Tokyo, but you should do the bare minimum as a human being," and that was a good point. I had no more money, so I went back to my parents' house to visit my workplace and sell my car to make money… It was a great place to work, and I still feel bad about it, and I am grateful to my parents for not stopping me."

-Thus, he finally arrived in Tokyo. However, even at that point, he did not have a firm goal in mind.

"Since I was tall, I had been told since high school that I should model, so I decided to try modeling in Tokyo. So I looked at magazines and looked for an agency… Then I saw a movie, and I had a goal of becoming an actor. I guess I couldn't allow myself to make an escape route, so I gave up on the modeling agency. But I didn't know how to become an actor, so I asked for introductions and auditions. When you are alone in Tokyo, you have to help yourself to survive, so in that sense it is a tough city, although you can get by with your own efforts."

-However, he decided to live here.

Scouted out in the hallway?! First serial drama!

"I went to Toei's headquarters with my office manager to say hello."

-It was on the production floor, where the desks of the producers belonging to the company were lined up.

"While the manager was greeting the executives, I was waiting in the hallway and my shoelace came undone, so I had to sit down and tie it back on."

-Then a man appeared (he seemed to be a very important guy).

"He suddenly asked me who I was, and when I told him I was an actor, he said, 'I see, now come with me.'"

-He didn't know why, but he was called in for an audition for Racing Squadron Carranger that was being prepared at the time. Unfortunately, he was too tall to fit in with the other members and was rejected. He then decided to take on Super Shining Soldier Changéríon.

"When I received the script for the first episode, I thought that if it was going to be a choice between Akira and Hayami, I should be Hayami because of my personality. I heard that the two of them were competing with each other until the very end, but they decided on me at the last minute."

-However, he confesses that he did not really feel it.

"I mean, I was readily selected to appear in a serialized drama series, and I wondered if it would be so quick and easy."

-However, after that, he ended up having to work very hard (laughs).

Changéríon was a "playground"

"At first, Hayami was supposed to be more cool and carry the shadow of not being a hero. But before I knew it, he turned out to be such a serious fool."

-It was your own fault, said scriptwriter Inoue at the time, or not (laughs).

"I guess it's my fault. I was often told by Mr. Shirakura and Mr. Inoue that Hayami was not really this kind of guy. It is true that I was a bit aware of it, and there was a part of me that got carried away. It was my first acting job, and I had the strength of not knowing, you could say, or the feeling that it would be fine if it was funny. And I went overboard."

-However, his fearless vigor has created an image of Hayami as a hot-blooded, upright, stubborn, and good-natured person. In episode 9 "The Radiant Hayami!", for example, he transforms into the long-sought Changéríon in place of Akira, but his good-naturedness causes the dark creature, who begs him to change his ways, to flee. The hero is unable to wield his sword in the face of the apologetic opponent… Akira was an unconventional hero too, but is it our imagination that Hayami has also created a stir in the image of heroes of the past? Indeed, a hero is a being who slaughters his enemies in the name of justice. The antithesis of this attitude seems to have led to the current Kamen Rider Ryuuki.

"I feel that Mr. Inoue and Mr. Shirakura have successfully created an amusement park or, well, a more primitive park or playground for us. It's like we were just playing there. For example, "We made swings. But this is a swing set, so how would you play on it?" So we all thought hard about what we would do. We were really just having fun playing. If you could see the antithesis of that, I think it was because Mr. Shirakura and Mr. Inoue were so great."

-The only regret he has is that the program, which he says he played around in with all his might, was terminated in the middle of the cour. To be precise, it was not cancelled, but rather not renewed for a fourth cour, which was a shock to him since he thought it would continue.

"I guess I wanted more of a sense of convergence from everyone, because it ended without any. But now I think that last episode was good. The idea of a loop between a carefree daily life and a serious battlefield is amazing, isn't it? But I also think that maybe that's the way life is. As for myself, I wanted to settle things as Hayami. I think Hayami has always been a guy with a very negative attitude, thinking that he was supposed to be the one to make it. Just as it would have been nice to have a hero who was not cool and had no sense of justice, which Akira symbolized, it would have been nice to have someone with darker thoughts. Likewise, I think it would have been okay for Kuroiwa (Ogawa Atsushi) to be a villain and still fall in love with Eri (Kochihira Chika). …When you think about it like that, it was certainly a work that broke a lot of stereotypes."

-Hayami, who was in the midst of a conflict, however, finally achieves his longed-for transformation in episode 32 "Enter the Second Warrior!"… but this is Changéríon, after all, and Hayami transforms by eating dried plums (is he Suppaman?).

"For a long time, there were rumors. I wondered how it would turn out, and then it happened (laughs). I like the fact that Hayami is unaware of it, it's just like him."

-We asked him about his memorable episodes.

"I was happy to see the transformation. The scene where he eats Chief Munakata's seed of darkness and gets down on his knees saying, "That was delicious!" was funny. Then there was the scene where Akira and I switched places in "The Radiant Hayami!" That was a difficult episode. We were looking at each other and laughing, thinking, "This is not how it's supposed to be!" From that time on, I learned to do small acts in the frame, and we would restlessly do things together in the background. And the dubbing was separate, so it was mostly wasted (laughs)."

-What he did not like was dubbing.

"I hated it. When I saw the first episode, I thought it was so robotic. I thought that was so bad. I had a very hard time getting into the right mood for each episode."

-It was also around this time that he received his first fan letter.

"There was a one-time event called 'Cinefan' at Toei's Ooizumi Studios, and I wasn't scheduled to perform, but I went for one day and was surprised by the huge crowd. It was the first time for me to see fans in person, and I was surprised and happy to be called Hayami by a little kid, which was a strange feeling. I didn't really feel like I was playing the hero. I was more like "Detective Story" or "Tired Detective," which Akira likes, and we had said we would do something like that. So I was unexpectedly happy."

What Aizawa, an actor, thinks

"This job is more often hard and painful than fun, and there are more times when I don't do well, but sometimes I feel very fulfilled, and I want to savor it even more. At the time of Changéríon, I didn't think about these things, I was just playing like crazy, and I probably didn't wake up until later. But I learned a lot of things to wake up. Akira really has something that only he can do. I was very jealous of him because he had something that I could never have… but I was sure that there was a role that only I could play, so I decided to find it, because no matter what I played, I would always be me. I left because I didn't want to live a normal life, but at my age, when I interact with people from different professions, I often find myself empathizing with them, and I think that being an actor is not special. I hope that this will be a source of fertilizer. For me, Changéríon is like a "park where I went to during elementary school." I remember playing in the mud in the daytime, and I remember the dusk and the night scenery—If I had to give a word to my fans… I would say thank you. That's all I have to say."

Akira & Hayami

Akira: The snakeskin jacket I'm wearing in Kamen Rider (Asakura) right now is my own. Hayami: Oh, I've seen it before! Akira: It's in my room, you know? I'm not wearing it outside. Hayami: No, I saw it outside! You were walking around with it on. Akira: You're lying! Totally lying! Hayami: Just kidding. ♡ Akira: (laughs) You know, I was thinking that if you found out that I was playing a Rider wearing such a thing, you would say, "Akira, what the heck… I'm so upset!" (*) Hayami: You're right (laughs). Rider, huh? I'm so sad, Akira. Akira: Actually, I know you're worried. ♡

Hayami: At the time, I was just so absorbed in things, so I'm glad that people still remember me after 6 years like this. Akira: Yes. But now, when I hear people say that my acting has improved as a rider, I'm like, "What?!" But it's true, we weren't very good at acting (laughs). The director would joke that if we were better, we would be able to do the long takes on camera, and the cutaways were very detailed. Hayami: Yes, there was a time when I was quite particular about getting a long take someday. Akira: Then, in the middle of the series, Director Konaka started making long takes of your scenes. Hayami: That made the acting more exciting. Then, I would make mistakes and get yelled at. Akira: And I get depressed (laughs). And it shows on my face. I can't smile when I should be smiling, and that's not good. Hayami: But I know that he is angry with me with love. I'm going to do my best.

Hayami: We've been talking about making a movie together for a long time, but it's not easy. Akira: But I would love to make a film! Let's really make it happen. *Editor's note: Actually, there was an initial plan for Hayami to visit Akira's Rider shooting site to correct his ways (?) as a hero. But unfortunately, it did not come true.

Aizawa Kazunari: Born August 1, 1969 in Miyagi Prefecture. After working as a model, he was scouted (?) in the hallway of Toei's headquarters and auditioned, making his debut as Super Shining Soldier Changéríon's Hayami Katsuhiko. Since then, he has been active in film and stage. He appeared in the movie "Dolls" directed by Kitano Takeshi, which will be released in the fall, and in the movie "SEMI" directed by Yokoi Kenji, which will be released at the end of the year.

Uchusen Vol. 77 (Summer 1996) ft. Choukou Senshi Changerion Cast Members Takashi Hagino x Kazunari Aizawa Double Interview (translations below)

Publication: September 1, 1996

This time, THU invites from, "Choukou Senshi Changerion," Takashi Hagino-san, who plays Akira, and Kazunari Aizawa-san, who plays Hayami. What's the real side of these two that can't be seen from their roles?

"Since this time around it's Akira vs Hayami, We'd like to ask you to introduce each other first. From Aizawa-san's point of view, what kind of person is Hagino-san?"

Hagino: Well, I'm basically the handsome one here.

Aizawa: Hey, hey, hey (laughs). No, he seems to be thinking about what he wants to do, but all around, he's just like Akira. On site, he's cheerful and jokes around alot.

Hagino: That's just another way of getting into the role (laughs). I'm usually pretty gloomy you know.

Aizawa: That's not true. That's more like me (laughs).

"For those of us who watch on TV, we wonder what we'd do if Hagino-san were serious and had the personality of Hayami.....(laughs)."

Hagino: No, actually, I really do, but we have more filming later today, so I'm still in the state of being Akira Suzumura now.

Aizawa: That's right, this is Takashi Hagino. This is how it should be.

Hagino: This is not how it should be, come on (laughs).

"There doesn't seem to be a gap between the age on set and in the show, is there?"

Hagino: Both Akira in the show and I are 23 years old.

Aizawa: That's true, but in our private lives, you feel more like an adult.

"Isn't he popular with women?"

Aizawa: Akira is very popular. He's always so cheerful when he's like that. Everyone's like, "Akira-kun! Akira-kun!," while the feeling I have is, "What about me?" (laughs).

Hagino: This guy's more of a madam killer.* The older women are all over Hayami (laughs). (*slang for a younger man who attracts older married women)

Aizawa: (he bursts out laughing).

"What kind of people do you receive most of your fan letters from?"

Hagino: As expected, alot of them are from women. There's one that came from someone who was more of a single lady than a mom, but she said, "I just happened to turn it on, I'm too old to be this embarrassed, but I watch it every week."

Aizawa: (looking sad) I haven't received any fan letters.

"Eh? You haven't?"

Aizawa: It's true, it's true (laughs). I ask why it's always Akira. Right?

Hagino: (saying seriously) Right…..If you just look at his face, to be quite honest, Hayami's obviously more fearless and incredibly handsome. I'm an up and coming actor (laughs), a face that the world has never seen before. From the very beginning, the staff said that Hayami would be more popular among women. Well, even if they're not here now, I'm sure they'll come in droves sooner or later.

Aizawa: I talked to some people from SEGA the other day, and it seems that Hayami gives off the image of being a scary person.

"On that note, what kind of person is Aizawa-san from your perspective Hagino-san?"

Hagino: Erotic (laughs). He's naughty.

Aizawa: Wa, wait a minute (laughs).

Hagino: He likes women (laughs). That's a lie though (laughs).

Aizawa: That's also a lie.

Hagino: He wanted to play the role of Hayami from the beginning, and since he's just an expansion of what he's already got inside him, I think he essentially has the character of Hayami down. He's both serious and unskilled at certain parts. But, he's basically a kind and cheerful person….he's a nice guy, huh? (laughs). I'm younger than you though (laughs).

"Aizawa-san is 4 years older than you."

Aizawa: That's true, but in my private life, he's always pulling me along. It's the same even when we're on set.

Hagino: (while picking at the katsu lunch that arrived for him) Hayami, do you like green peas?

Aizawa: Yeah.

"What was the most memorable episode with an interaction between the two of you?"

Hagino: The first episode that I felt was a good fit for us was episode 4.

Aizawa: In the beginning, we were both alittle awkward, and our characters weren't well defined yet, but, we talked alot during the fourth episode and shared our opinions.

Hagino: Episode 9 was done just as we were getting closer to each other. But, I also wanted to do alittle more in the middle of the episode.

Aizawa: I think it would've been better if the viewers had understood our characters alittle better.

"There was an unusually serious scene in episode 6, "Sorry, Jiro."

Hagino: We shot episodes 5 and 6 together. I had to put more focus into episode 6, so for episode 5, I just went along with things in a clueless state. My favorite of the first 10 episodes was how serious Akira was in episode 7. That was the first time that I got a feel for the serious side of Akira, so I was able to play most of episode 6, especially the second half, as myself.

"There's not many situations where Akira is driven to such a point."

Hagino: Right. This means that I'll stay with this character until the end. Never letting him grow. Every time he pretends to have grown, but then delivers a punch line at the end. That's how I want it to be too. I can't play a role like this unless I'm excited, so it's very rewarding.

"When you were first cast, were there any differences compared to what you imagined the hero would be like?"

Hagino: When I saw the proposal, I thought I wanted to do it. I personally thought that I wasn't suited for a normal hero show and that I couldn't do it, but, when I read the first scenario, I found the character to be very interesting, so there was no difference between the two of us. I wanted to be more like Akira Suzumura by showing parts of myself that I don't normally show.

Aizawa: I wanted to play the role of Hayami from the beginning, as I thought I was suited for the role. However, things started to fall apart around episodes 3 and 4, and I kept asking myself if this was the right role for me, but after 10 episodes, I thought this might be good afterall. I think this role is good for me. I'd never done anything with comedy before.

"What's your most memorable moment?"

Aizawa: For me, it was the scene where we were suspended from the bridge in episode 5. It was painful.

Hagino: I'm genuinely afraid of heights. But, in our roles, Hayami was the scared one and I had to put on a calm face, so it was difficult. Hayami had an unconcerned look while saying, "Lift me higher" (laughs). The scene in front of the door at the end of the episode where Akemi leaves left a strong impression on me. I heard that heroes usually never cry in front of others, so I decided to cry for sure. But, I didn't want it to end in a pathetic way, so I added the line, "Ah, I've got to fix the door," even though it wasn't in the script. Without that, I would've been unmotivated, and I wanted to avoid that. If he were a normal hero, he'd probably just smile and say, "Good luck," and the episode ends. But, I've never done that before, so I'm challenging myself to try doing such things. The next week, when I thought he was lonely, I liked that he gathered all the girls together and played baseball. That's what I am interested in when creating Akira's character.

"What about Aizawa-san?"

Aizawa: I'm always thinking about how to depict my relationship with Akira. In terms of the drama, I'm mainly thinking about my involvement with Akira.

"Finally, please give a message to the readers."

Hagino: Everyone's favorite Akira Suzumura won't die for a year, so please watch the show as you see fit, if you don't, I'll kick your ass (laughs). That's all.

Aizawa: I think Hayami's character will continue to develop, and his interactions with Akira will become more interesting, so please look forward to them.

Hagino: Today I wasn't Takashi Hagino, but Akira Suzumura, so I think I was being kinda rude (laughs).

Key's 1st Crossover TV Anime KAGINADO Announces Its Premiere Date of October 12

    KAGINADO is Key's first crossover anime project featuring the main characters from its popular game/anime series, such as Kanon, AIR, CLANNAD, Little Busters!, and Rewrite. The TV anime's official website has opened to announce its premiere date of October 12, 2021, and main voice cast members.

  While most of the voice cast memres will be reprising their characters from the games and anime, Misuzu Kamio from AIR will be newly voiced by Asami Sanada, because the character's original cast Tomoko Kawakami passed away in 2011.

  Sanada says, "When I was asked to join an audition, I remembered Kawakami-san from our time together on the radio and in anime. I admired the way she could play any role with ease and cheerfully pull us together! I felt the work and the role were able to reach the hearts of the viewers because she was such a wonderful person. I got goosebumps when I was informed that I had been chosen for the role, and even as I write this comment, I feel again the size of the role and the responsibility. I will once again firmly hold on to what I felt I wanted to cherish, and I will firmly carry on Misuzu that Kawakami-san carefully spun!"

Do Androids Dream Of Happy Endings? || SA mdl 001 || Epilogue

Change was a constant fixture of life, artificial or otherwise. In one moment, you can feel like you’re satisfied with everything you’ve already done in life, but in the next you’d realize that it has only been the first peak of your life so far, and there’s always room for more to come.

In the months that followed, that was the perception that followed one Kazunari ‘Kaz’ Aikawa as the paramedic returned to working life in the public service sector. To the surprise of many, however, the blonde soon announced his intentions of giving up his career as a full-time EMT, citing physical trauma that he had been subjected to over the course of their imprisonment in the confines of the Hope’s Peak’s Most Excellent modelling agency. It didn’t mean he would be stepping out of healthcare forever, as instead, he would now be pushing his focus towards developing robotics in field medicine, working closely with former ex-SHSL Social Roboticist Mina Choi to further research into intelligent prosthetics.

In a way, things certainly seemed to work out in the end. The prodigal child who inherited the legacies of his parents had finally found what many thought was his true calling in life, and as Kazunari slowly made his way to the forefront of the research facility that he had pioneered, he also demonstrated his first prototype: the orthopaedic “roboots” that gave him the ability to walk again in just no time at all after months of self-confinement to a wheelchair for recovery. Thus, the opening of Aikawa Biosynthetics went off without a hitch, though it would be amiss to say that no one noticed the subtle, miniscule changes.

Casual observers noted that Kazunari seemed more ill at ease and sickly lately than he had in many previous appearances and interviews. It was quite plausible, even pitiable; given what the students of the illustrious academy had suffered, it did look like the effects of the tragedy had finally caught up and taken its toll on the prodigy’s health, both physical and mental. Prayers and gifts came in large supply, wishing the ex-paramedic good fortune in his pursuits, and soon enough the hype died down, as most things not affecting the zeitgeist tended to.

Observant individuals noticed something else, though there was little they could do about it. Within the sea of tabloids and theories emerged a post that gained some traction, hinting that this Kazunari Aikawa was not the man he purported to be. After all, it was a tad bit convenient that a pair of contact lenses could have hidden his blue eyes for so long, or that press photos of the day after the students were freed showed that there had been absolutely no sign of the purported physical trauma he had supposedly endured in HPME. Whispers that his retirement came from being unable to keep up the duplicity or that the Aikawa family had paid someone else to do what their son could not, but ultimately nothing bore fruit. After all, it had been on public record that Kazunari Aikawa had been quite alive for the last eighteen, almost nineteen active years of his life. How could someone so prolific simply be replaced all of a sudden?

And those of you who know this man to be a stranger, also know why he’s standing in the podium spot where your old friend, nemesis, classmate and EMT was supposed to be. For all intents and purposes, it seemed like KZA mdl 005 “Zaizen”, otherwise better known as ‘Kaz’, had disappeared. Because it was almost like the android had never existed in the first place.

Almost.

“Anything to declare, mister-?”

“Aizawa.” The man confidently replied. “Suzukaze Aizawa. But please, call me Kaz. I’m here with my colleagues from work to enjoy a holiday. Is that enough of a declaration for you?”

The customs officer stared at him. He stared back at her, smiling indulgently. Eventually she caught on that he’d been joking and rolled her eyes. “Please step through the metal detector.”

Where he would have once made an apologetic excuse and subjected himself to a pat down, Kaz instead strode forward and collected his luggage on the other side of the conveyor belt without being stopped. Patting down his new hoodie to make sure all of his personal effects were in order, he combed a hand through his platinum-blonde hair, making sure not to disturb the new perm too much. A splash of freckles and turquoise eyeshadow accentuated the rest, and to those not in the know, it was hard to connect the dots between the ex-EMT and the Biosynthetic Humanoid model that he had requested to be transferred into half a year ago. 

Despite his initial uncertainties at propagating the same technology that led to the deaths of half of his classmates (temporary or otherwise) Kaz had come around to the idea eventually, once Mina and Midori reassured him it was now benign. Part of the decision had been made due to the convenience it would bring him; the other part came from the need to disappear as soon as his benefactors realized their son was waking up from his minimally-conscious state.

And yet, some things would continue to remain the same. As the amber-eyed android smiled at nothing in particular, Kaz waited as the rest of his colleagues - an unlikely bunch of people if the rest of the crowd staring and whispering had anything to say about it - followed suit into the lobby of the cruise ship. “You know, Detective, I think that’s a very bold way of announcing your re-engagement to the rest of the world.” He laughed, noting the ring she was wearing. “Please accept my congratulations - again - and I wish you both all the best in life and love.”

The person being referenced, having been searching through her bag as she waited for the others to make it through, quirked an eyebrow. A petite but firmly intimidating young woman brushed a longer lock of her hair cropped hair behind her ear as her fingers ghosted the ring decorated with a bird and germanic phrasing. 

“I thought you would have gathered th’ I don’t care what the world thinks, only what she does. I was going to propose but… well. Literally, it's better late than never?”

With an amused tut and sly twinkle in her emerald eyes, Reiko Eigawa placed her other hand in her pocket and stood. It was visually impossible now to link the woman before the former EMT to the terrifying mantisdroid once prowling the rooms of the modelling agency.

“Can’t be criminal to think I have the most beautiful partner in the world, hm? But I think we need a bit more healing before we seriously make any plans like that.” She rolls and cracks her wrist. “‘M just just glad I could get some time off so early.”

“You and me both, Eigawa-san. You and me both.” He chuckles as he goes over to help Senda with their new suitcase. Technology certainly had moved on a little since all of them had been inside the agency for so long, but they could also move with technology as it came to pass. 

Plus these luggage bags came sponsored courtesy of Koharu. While he didn’t keep in touch with many of his other classmates - understandably so, given the events that had transpired over the final trial - she’d been one of the few exceptions, and he had even volunteered to work for her and her archaeological crew as an on-scene medic once his mandatory holiday was well and truly over, whenever that ended up being.

He hoped things were okay with her, and resolved to check in with the Onowai family… later. Vacation first.

A couple of hours later found them all on the deck, lounging in chairs and finding things to do while relaxing under the sun. Talking was a free action, and there was much of it to go around. “It’s still kind of amusing, actually,” Kaz admitted. “I’ve spent so long focused on doing my job that I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do now that I’ve been effectively retired. You asked me on the way here why I booked this trip in particular, and to be honest… would you accept the explanation that it was literally the first search result on ‘vacation spots to take your friends’?”

Looking over from the side, a tall person with an undershave and ash brown hair tied off in a bun glanced at Kaz from over their sunglasses. As they spoke, their drawl mixed with franco-undertones came as familiar as it always had.

“Hmmm~ Well it’s pretty nice all things considerin’. So yeah, I think I’d take that explanation. Sounds like a very… you sort’ve idea. It’s cute!”

The entity once known as Selene, now undertaking the name Alycia Selena Pageau in her return to the living world, winked cheekily at the fellow android. They had kept their height and generally athletic stature, but a new addition of freckles peppered their nose and cheeks. Their personality and memories, however, remained intact throughout the process.

From the railing, the detective coolly looked over her shoulder with a chuckle.

“It’s not bad at all… leagues better than what I would’ve done, clearly. I don’t know about you two-?” Her attention was directed to the other two people sitting at the lounge chairs.

One of them, a taller individual in sunglasses and a hat, tilted the brim in acknowledgement. 

“It is my imperative that this was handled as best as it was. The odd drama came about here and there but oth- indeed.”

Helios, or Bartholomew Arseneau I, nodded back. His own body was every bit as wiry as it once was, albeit mechanical, and his hair was back to its natural black and was pulled over his shoulder in a short ponytail.

“This is far better than whatever was before. All of that pressure, ‘tcha! The world will know of my greatness once more. Is that not right, Senda?”

Sitting with their arms folded, the last person to speak had taken a while to formulate what it was they wanted.

“....Had… no other idea where to go, so… it is good, ah… yes.”

The figure formerly known as Kumi Asashima retained the same bone-white skin from prior, but their hair was cut in a sweeping black bob, retaining its natural curliness. The formal clothes from before were shed, and in their place was a collared shirt and skirt. 

“Yes. It is good. My… ah, siblings would think so. I wish they would have come, yes, ever since we reunited… a shame.”

Remembering their manners, they caught themself.

“That is not to say that I am ungrateful. I am.”

The ex-paramedic nodded back, not at all insulted. "Sorry I didn't take the initiative to invite them too, but I think they understand why it's just us five."

“See, Kazzie? There’s nothin’ you need t’ worry about.” The demigirl moved to sit next to Kaz, nudging his side playfully. However, they also caught a glimpse of something further in his expression and frowned. “You okay?”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah... I do have to talk to you about something privately though. Do you want to get something to drink at the bar?” He asked Alycia, getting up from the lounge chair. “It’s about… you know.”

“Ah… Yeah. Right.” Frankly, they had been quietly wondering that for the last few months - but with all of the adjustments it took to return to the outside world, it had admittedly fallen a bit off of the former circus performer’s mind. Standing up, they offered their hand to him.

“I’ll lead the way.”

As they both made their way over, Kaz thought about exactly what he wanted to say to them. It was hard enough trying to process emotions as a creation of artificial intelligence, but now, in a body where both heart and mind were real, living tissue and thus the feelings that came with it were quite real too? It was nerve-wracking, to say the least… but he’d risen to the challenge before, and he’d do it again to finally settle things once and for all.

“I have a crush on you.” 

Before Alycia can respond, he lowers his head to hide the extremely embarrassed expression that reddens his face. “That was probably too direct, sorry, but it’s the truth. I tried looking up explanations online for all of these confusing emotions I’ve had over the course of the last few months that we’ve known each other and every single one has pointed me in this direction. Koharu also had a hand in it admittedly, but you don’t have to humour me for it though, Alycia. Barty and you have only just started getting a grip on your new lives and settling things from your old lives and… there’s a lot of it to take in already and deal with from there.” 

Kaz peeks in from between his fingers, shielding a good portion of his face but maintaining a sliver of eye contact because he wants them to know he means it. “But I also want to be part of that life with you too. And regardless of your response, you’re still one of my best friends, and that also means I’ll respect how you feel about it and have your back all the same. Just… please tell me whether or not I might even have a chance?”

It’s actually kind of endearing to see Kaz this unconfident, as I imagine the other would agree. 

Sure enough, throughout all of this, the taller figure had developed a dumb grin on their face. It was that smitten sort of smile that pulled through when you watched someone you cared for ramble through something they cared about; or, in this case, finally trying to understand the feelings he was never supposed to comprehend in the first place.

It was a proud smile just as much as it was tender.

Reaching out, Alycia’s palm rested on the outside of the EMT’s fingers currently obscuring his reddened cheeks. Letting out a warm chuckle from their bar stool, they tilted their head to match their blue eyes to his as they gently pushed aside his own hand. Alycia’s smile settled to something softer by the time they spoke.

“Son rougeur est très mignon, Kazzie.” She hummed and brought her other hand up to cup his face gently before planting a quick peck to the blonde’s cheek and resting their foreheads together. “Though… I’m sorry y’were the last to realize.”

Yes, Selene had always been able to tell. Some parts of their memories from early in their revival as the flighty robot, as well as aspects of the so called ‘hostage situation’, had blurred. But somehow, the time spent with Kaz managed to remain crystal clear throughout the transitional process.

“Well considerin’ how ya met me, I didn’t see you at the time as someone I could care about beyond a friend… but I thought I told you somethin’ back before that final trial. I said that I wanted t’ be in yer life after all of it, right? Or, I at least tried to probably. ‘Cause I realized I was mortified of stoppin’ existing, but also to stop seein’ Helios, an’ the other bots… and you.”

Yes it felt sappy, almost painfully so if they were to be honest with themself. But, they felt they had a right to be after literally fighting their way back from death, in a strange way.

“...I wanna finally live a life again, Kazzie. I want t’ experience all of the things I was robbed of back then with these new eyes, new identity, an’ some new friends… you helped me get here. You didn’t give up on us or toss us away.” Alycia pulls their forehead away an inch or two, if only to wink at Kaz. “If I didn’t have ya in my life, I’d feel pretty damn robbed.” They chuckle. “Course I feel the same way, but I wasn’t gonna push when you were still figurin’ out yerself - and, y’know, I wasn’t exactly human lookin’... But, if that’s how ya feel? Well… That makes me real happy~”

If Kaz had been red before, he positively flared up when they pecked him on the cheek. It was reminiscent of a machine overheating, but instead of liquid latex and electricity it was bright, scarlet blood that rushed his head. Had he still been an android, perhaps he could’ve blown steam out the side of his ears, but instead he listens as they continue, and at the end, begin to try and utter a few words. “I… Oh… You mean… I was… W… Huh…”

He stops, shaking his head wildly. “...I’m sorry, I’m normally much more verbose than this, but I can’t believe… Was I… really that oblivious? I mean… Oh… So that’s what Koharu-san meant.” Kaz pauses, before sighing happily. “I guess my system’s caught a love bug after all. And it’s making me both dumb and very, very gay. I could attempt to run diagnostics on it, but I think… Well, I know I’d like to keep it close. Just like I would, uh, like to keep you close too.”

That last comment causes him to bow down so that Alycia can’t see the look of pure shame on his face once he realizes he said that aloud. “...I’m still learning the whole ‘flirting’ bit, sorry.” He mumbles something under his breath, running his hands through his hair awkwardly and trying to psych himself up to say it out loud. 

Eventually, he looked up with a smile plastered over his face, and moved to hold their hands. “I just… Cripes, it’s embarrassing to say it out loud, but I’m going to try, so… well, I love you. And I’ve apparently had the biggest crush on you for some time now so if you would have me, I’d love to be your boyfriend, Alycia. Please go out with… me…?”

While the moment was tender, and the taller of the pair seemed thoroughly endeared to the boy’s stuttering, they sat themself down on a nearby chair so Kaz didn’t have to crane his neck for the nearly one foot height difference.

“I think you could guess the answer t’ that, mon choupinet~” Coy as ever, they hum and give a little tug to pull the retired EMT closer for a proper hug this time. Quietly, they revel in the fact that they could actually wrap their arms around him now - unlike before.

His arms wrap around them too as a hundred little Kazzies squeed in unison within his mind, while yet more tap-danced away in his stomach. It was all he could do to keep a serene smile on his face, all the while resisting the urge to giggle like a ten-year-old or ask them to please call him more pet names. Something gnawed at his subconscious that maybe that was not the right thing to ask in public with little kids watching.

So instead he simply basks in the sensation for however long he can attempt to hold it for. Suzukaze ‘Kaz’ Aizawa was most definitely on cloud nine, and wasn’t planning on leaving it.

Having finally found it acceptable to sit, Reiko had made sure she was facing out towards the passing crowd, and was naturally first to catch the other two returning from the bar. While the woman didn’t say anything, the pair was given a knowing glance before she finally peeled her wary eyes off of the strangers mulling to peruse the novel she had brought.

Bartholomew glanced back too, eyes widened. There was a brief moment where his eyes downcasted, before he chuckled. 

As it should have been.

“I see you have a fine catch! Keep her well, or I will be most displeased.”

“My pleasure, though let’s be real. She’s the one keeping me.”

“Th’ both of you are weird.”

Kaz looked back upon the horizon, and kept his gaze on the clear azure sky. While the internal decision remained invisible to all but the mechanical mind that made it, he envisioned cutting the final threads that tied him down to his old life away, and setting free the kite that flew high. No longer did he have to worry about maintaining the identity of someone he now considered a friend and brother, or worry about disappearing once his purpose was fulfilled.

It was time to assert his own identity and find a new purpose in life. Kaz was here to stay.

“Come to think of it.” The thought came to him as the cruise docked, and he turned to Reiko. “Wasn’t Jiang-san supposed to come on this vacation too? I wonder why she turned it down...”

It was at this moment that the television screens around the cruise sprang to life. A beautiful grey-haired woman with rabbit ears and a handsome blond man in a half-mask turned to face the camera, smiling as they greeted the inbound passengers from the pier.

“Welcome to the Crescent Moon Hotel and Resort!” The pair declared. “We hope you enjoy your stay here, esteemed guests!”

“I guess we’ll never know…”
