The Heroine's Journey: Lucy MacLean

“The feminine journey is a journey in which the hero gathers the courage to face death and endure the transformation toward being reborn as a complete being in charge of her own life.” — 45 Master Characters

In her book 45 Master Characters, Victoria Schmidt outlines the steps and phases in the Feminine Journey as seen in many traditional stories such as myths and fairy tales. Unlike The Hero’s Journey, which focuses on the external, The Heroine’s Journey is about inner exploration.

In the following analysis, I will examine Lucy MacLean’s journey so far in Fallout (2024). I believe it will be interesting to identify at what stage she is by the end of S1 which will give us an idea of what likely awaits her in S2.

Note: This analysis is written for fun. It is my own reading of the character and her journey. You’re welcome to have your own. Spoilers ahead!

Schmidt’s Heroine’s Journey has nine stages:

ACT 1 Containment:

The Illusion of Perfect World

ACT 1

2. The Betrayal or Realization

In the first episode, we meet Lucy content in Vault 33. We are shown a whole montage of her perfect life in her perfect shelter. It’s designed to protect her. Outside is dangerous but in her bubble, she is safe and sound. But is this good enough?

Despite her obvious naivety, we get a sense she is after something else. In her first scene, she applies for marriage, which is telling of her being on the threshold of adolescence and adulthood. Now, if marriage is really what she is after, or if it is something she relies on to fit in the community she lives in, is up for debate.

The thing is, the heroine knows deep down that her little world is not perfect. And she subconsciously seeks freedom so she can exercise her growth. Perhaps the prospect of marriage is the closest to freedom she has known in the vault. Or perhaps it is the thrill of meeting someone from outside her containment. In any case, she wants change; her shelter has turned into a cage.

Here comes the moment when Lucy’s perfect world is shattered. On her wedding night, right after the consummation of marriage (the symbolic passing to adulthood), she is betrayed by her husband. This is the so-called “inciting incident”. He turns out to be a raider from the surface. Now, not only is she betrayed by him personally, but she is betrayed by her idea of the outside world. He is her first conscious contact with the world outside the vault. And it is a far cry from what she has believed in.

Not only that but the danger has breached the walls of her shelter; she can’t ignore it. It turns out that her perfect world and the system she has lived in are broken. Her attempt at freedom ends with her husband’s hands around her neck. The history and ethics lessons have done little to prepare her for this. So a part of her begins to wonder what actually lies out there.

To top it off, her father, who is an Overseer and the biggest authority by her glass bubble’s standards, is drugged and taken hostage before her own eyes. She encounters the villain for the first time in the face of Moldaver. With her convictions shattered and her dad gone, she must make a choice.

3. The Awakening, or Preparing for the Journey

Lucy’s world is in ruins, metaphorically and literally. The others’ refusal to send a search party only reinforces the idea that her world has let her down. This is her awakening. She decides to take the active road and do something about it herself, hoping to rebuild what was lost.

From the story’s perspective, she has to find her dad. But as screenwriter Robertson-Dworet puts it: “As much as she leaves to find her father in the pilot, she also wants to fuckin' know what's out that door.” Moldaver also remarks in the final episode that Lucy’s curiosity greatly motivates her to leave the vault.

Given the raiders’ attack and with no established authority to prohibit her from doing so, she ventures to do just that. With the help of Norm and Chet, she gathers tools and prepares for the journey. What she isn’t aware of but will soon find out is that no material tools will help her with what’s waiting outside. She has yet to learn to trust herself and her qualities which will ultimately help her. It’s time for the trial by fire.

4. The Descent – Passing the Gates of Judgement

ACT 2

The descent may not be a literal one. In Lucy’s case, it’s ascent. She looks behind her as the door is closed and locked. There is no way back, only ahead. Often, the descent is about passing the gates of the Underworld. One of the first shots outside the vault shows us bones and a skull on the ground. The Wasteland is very much portrayed as the Underworld with its own set of rules.

From here on, the real journey begins. The heroine faces the consequences of her life-changing decision in the form of tests that will determine her worth. She might be advised to return to her perfect world, as Dr. Siggi Wilzig does after she lights the bonfire. After she refuses, he tells her that she will have to adapt and become a "different animal altogether," summarising the point of this stage of transformation in her journey. 

She will then try to use the tools she has at her disposal—literal and metaphorical—but they won’t work. With each encounter, she will lose weapons or belongings until she is left with nothing of the things she thought would help her. Think of the filtered water Lucy loses or how her dart doesn’t work against the Ghoul. She begins to look progressively worse as her jumpsuit gets dirtier and bloodier. She even loses her trigger finger. 

The heroine may also face societal prejudice. Lucy is stunned by people’s opinions about Vault dwellers and Vault ideals in general. She is being proven again and again that her sensibilities, HR manuals, and ethics don’t work in the Wastes. 

The heroine has to rely on her courage and instincts. She must let go of all control and surrender herself to the descent. After being stripped of everything, she must face her demons. Lucy strives to always do the right thing, but she needs to embrace the fact the fact that the right thing doesn’t always come in a neat little package. The world is more than right and wrong.

I believe the scene that best illustrates the first time Lucy actively trusts her instincts and by doing so, survives on her own, is Super Duper Mart. She uses threats, uses a makeshift weapon, holds a hostage (it’s a robot but still, it’s a big step for her), and most significantly, for the first time, murders another to ensure her own survival. Even though Martha had no humanity left, her murder is important in Lucy’s journey because her death becomes synonymous with doing the right thing, not for a cause or the greater good, but for Lucy herself. 

5. The Eye of the Storm

She emerges victorious with her bloodied face and tank top, and this is the most disheveled state in which we have seen her. By helping out the Ghoul, she is the victor not only in terms of survival but also in terms of morality. She shows him that she is morally superior to him. She’s successfully beaten her demons this time without losing sight of her golden rule. 

Still, it has taken a lot out of her to survive. The heroine feels weary, reminiscing about easier times. She seeks to find the familiar comfort she once had and may consequently settle for something she doesn’t really want. 

After this mini-climax, the heroine evaluates and comes to terms with what just happened. She concludes that she handled things well. Having survived the danger, she gains a false sense of security. In Lucy’s journey, this stage coincides with her meeting Max and their experience in Vault 4. 

Finally, Lucy finds a person she can trust. The world feels a tad bit better with someone by her side. At the same time, she dreams of going back to her own perfect little world. It’s so lucky that they end up in another vault!

While Max discovers the joys of living a simple life, it’s interesting to observe Lucy’s behavior. Although she feels safe for a moment, she starts noticing the people and things around her. She’s become more perceptive than before. Try as she might, she can’t go back to her old ways due to her experience on the surface. She wants to feel safe, she wants to sleep with Max; she wants life to be simple again. But she can’t help but look twice over her shoulder. She feels uneasy and grows suspicious of everything around her. It’s the newly found survivor in her screaming at her to get out. 

Eventually, Lucy learns that she has made the wrong assumptions about Vault 4 because of her ignorance and her raw instincts. They leave the vault unscathed, with Lucy fantasizing about a future with her and Max living together back in her perfect world. Soon they find the head but are forced to separate. Lucy gets the head, the kiss, and the promise that Max will find her in Vault 33. It looks like the journey is nearing its end. But it’s only the beginning. 

6. Death – All Is Lost

The heroine believes that her journey will soon be over, but it is time for her to face her biggest fear yet. Lucy delivers the head and finds her dad, thinking they can safely go back to how things were. Then, all of a sudden, her world is spun on its axis once more. 

Schmidt notes that few female protagonists make it past the stage of their “death”. Some of them die in the literal sense, some go back to their old lives defeated, and others fall into a spiral of depression. I believe this is Lucy’s final stage in S1. What will become of her in S2? Let’s speculate!

She learns about her mother’s fate and about what her father did to Shady Sands. And perhaps most jarring to her is that her father really believes that he’s done the right thing by dropping a bomb over a thriving city. Lucy’s role model turns out to be a fraud. The ideals she has lived and fought for, too. And it’s Moldaver, the villain, who seems to be on the right side of the story, despite her murdering her fellow people. It looks like the world isn’t simply divided into right and wrong after all.

This is the ultimate betrayal that leaves the heroine’s thoughts in inner turmoil. She feels humiliated and confused. All this time, she’s lived in a perfectly constructed lie. The events build up to her mercy killing her own mother, which is exactly what the Ghoul did to Roger in front of her. Purnell says: "She's learned from him. She has turned into him." She faces the death of her old self.

7. Support

ACT 3 Emergence:

The heroine’s journey is about building bridges between the individual and the group. Her inner awakening leads to her being more open to the help of others and helping them in turn. She isn’t afraid of betrayal anymore because, at the end of the day, she has herself.

In Lucy’s final scenes in S1, we actually see the beginning of this stage with the Ghoul offering her to travel with him and find out more about the past. She leaves Max behind and goes with the Ghoul. According to Schmidt, it’s during this stage that the protagonist will accept herself as she is and go on to share her knowledge with others. She will define her own world without an external authority. Her journey of self-discovery will guide the others around her to make amends with their own problems. 

We have already seen the Ghoul’s influence on Lucy. In S2, I believe we’ll see how Lucy affects the Ghoul for the better by balancing his sharp edges. But before that, she will need his help to get herself up on her feet so that she can be reborn and come full circle in a new perfect world.

The Pisces Heart of Cinderella 👸🐭👗👠🏰

Claire Nakti had made a video about UBP's connection to Cinderella. While I wholeheartedly think its bs to reduce one entire nakshatra's legacy down to them marrying rich, I do think the connection to Cinderella was right. HOWEVER, I have a different take on it.

Cinderella is not merely a story about a poor girl who marries a Prince. Cinderella is a good person stuck in a really unfortunate circumstance. She is mistreated by her own family ("step-family" but receiving step-treatment is a common theme in the lives of many UBP folks) Despite it all, Cinderella is a hard worker, kind, gentle and imaginative. Its really hard to not give into bitterness when you're in a such a position but Cinderella? She's a sweetheart. She puts her head down and does the work without complaint. And soon enough she's rewarded for it. The Fairy Godmother is the embodiment of her good karma; what goes up has to come down and eventually your goodness and sincerity will be recognized. We have to take into consideration the time and place in which Cinderella was written, which is hundreds of years ago. Marriage was the only way out for women and in many parts of the world, it still is.

In this context, Cinderella going to the Ball was her receiving an opportunity to transform her life. We can come up with many "feminist" alternatives where Cinderella is a dressmaker or a boss babe or whatever but its pointless to apply 21st century morality to a fairy tale. Think of it as an allegory. The Prince here represents good fortune and Pisces is the final rashi/sign and represents the culmination of all good things. Cinderella has worked her whole life for this, this is her turning point. She gets to marry into royalty and live in a castle. This of course can be taken literally as we've seen many UBP women marry into wealth but it is also a metaphor; if you work hard enough (not just actual labour but also spiritual/karmic work) you will achieve breakthrough. In order to break out of cycles, we must put the work in. And Pisces/12h is all about breaking patterns and coming out of the cycle. The close association with butterflies should say enough. The butterfly endures the pain of transformation and breaks out of the cocoon in order to emerge as her true self.

Remember that Revati is the birth nakshatra of Saturn.

The themes of karma, justice and fair-play are very evident in Revati nakshatra (which is the birth of Saturn) as well as UBP (which is a Saturnian nakshatra).

These are the two naks that lie entirely within Pisces rashi so they're what I refer to when I speak of Pisces. (0-3 degrees of Purva bhadrapada will also be included)

Cinderella wasn't chosen at random. It wasn't sheer luck. She was wearing glass slippers that her Fairy Godmother gave her. Those were specifically made for her. Going with the earlier metaphor of the Fairy being the embodiment of karma, the slipper represents the rewards that Cinderella has earned. Even when she walks away from the Ball, the trace of her karmic footprint (literally lol) remains there. What is meant for you cannot miss you. And eventually, Cinderella gets her due.

Cinderella is a deeply Saturnian story and Pisces rashi itself has both Saturn & Jupiter influence, representing two sides to the same coin and the Wheel of Fortune. The sign of Pisces is ruled by Jupiter, the largest, most expansive planet associated with luck and abundance. Meanwhile, UBP nakshatra is ruled by Saturn and Revati nakshatra is the birth nakshatra of Saturn. Vedic mythology and astrology is full of paradoxes and contradictions, representing the duality yet singularity of human existence. Therefore it's only fitting that the concluding nakshatra that literally means "wealth" would be the one under which Saturn, planet of discipline, karma & limitations would be born.

One cannot exist without the other. Jupiter mahadasha is followed by Saturn mahadasha and even though Jupiter is known as the giver, Jupiter's blessings are more short term, it is Saturn that gives long lasting success and good fortune because Saturn only rewards the worthy.

The theme of going from rags to riches is present in the lives of many Pisces natives.

Another nakshatra that has similar themes is Punarvasu.

Now I'll mention some Cinderella adaptations and the actresses who played Cinderella (Claire already covered many in her video so I'll try to include less common examples)

I had to start with the OG 1950 animated Disney film. It stars Ilene Woods as Cinderella

Ilene has a very interesting chart that makes her the perfect choice for Cinderella.

She is Bharani Sun, UBP Moon, Mercury in Rohini, (exalted) Venus in Revati (atmakaraka) Mars in Punarvasu, Ketu in Vishaka and Ashlesha Rising

All of these naks connect to different aspects of the story and emphasize a lot of common themes.

Bharani, as I'd explained in my post about Venus naks is strongly associated with karma and is presided by Lord Yama, God of Death, time, karma, justice and punishment. Bharani is a very transformative nakshatra and I'll go so far as to say that being in the company of a Bharani native triggers transformation/karma in others as well.

Rohini & Mrigashira are also strongly associated with fairy tales (I'll make a separate post about them in the future) and themes of running away, seeking a new home, being a misfit/outsider in your own house etc are common Rohini themes.

Punarvasu literally means "return of the light". Jupiter can give but he also takes. All Jupiter naks have themes of both gain and loss. Especially with Punarvasu natives, I think there is often a tendency to take their initial success/prosperity for granted/take it too seriously/have their head in the clouds, so they lose it and then re-gain what they lost or even more in the future, thus making a "return to light". Rags to riches is a common theme for these natives.

Vishaka nakshatra is known for having many enemies and for having many haters. They often find themselves in an environment where they're an outcast in some way. Being misunderstood is a HUGE theme.

Ashlesha, as I'd explained in my post about the nak often manifests as dysfunctional relationship with their mother and for receiving step-daughterly treatment at home. Obviously this is a major element of Cinderella's story as well.

Lua de Cristal, the 1990 Brazilian adaptation of Cinderella stars Xuxa as Cinderella.

She has UBP sun & stellium (mercury and jupiter) Bharani Moon along with Pushya Mars & Rising

Claire recently made a video about Punarvasu where she said there is a theme of losing something, repenting and gaining it again. The contrast between opposites, light vs dark, beauty vs ugliness etc is a big theme in this nak. I think this movie does a great job of representing Punarvasu.

The good and the evil are both played by Punarvasu natives. This is crucial because Punarvasu is all about cycles. By the end of the movie we see the good person aka Cinderella rewarded for her goodness and the evil stepmother punished for her cruelty. Punarvasu means return to light and this also means nobody goes unpunished.

Its even more poignant that the person most crucial to ensuring that justice is served is played by a Bharani Moon native (Bharani IS karma itself tbh) and that she herself is neglected by her mother and treated like an outsider.

Lastly, it's interesting af to me that in almost every adaptation of this story, right from the very beginning to now, Pisces natives are cast as Cinderella along with a group of certain naks recurring again and again.

Anyway here's my breakdown of the ffxiv jobs, my opinions on playing each, and the tier rank of how good their story was

TANKS

WARRIOR - warrior is so fucking funny why did they make it able to solo heal itself and the entire party in 90% of the content in the game. Raw Intuition/Bloodwhetting is so broken in dungeons its hilarious. And then they have like 3 additional healing skills on top of that. And they kept buffing it throughout Endwalker. So it is currently the easiest to play, does the most damage (i think...?), and has the best healing of any of the Tank jobs. 2nd fave probably.

Story Tier: C, it's ok, Curious Gorge is a good name. i have like nothing to say about it it's a generic AF story

PALADIN - I used to hate PLD but I think the partial rework they got halfway through Endwalker helped it a lot. It's much less clunky now. Probably still my least favorite Tank though Hallowed Ground is fun and it's pretty close to Gunbreaker for me.

Story Tier: F, this is the worst class storyline in the entire game. It's so stupid. The writing is so bad the writers acknowledge it makes no sense at all and I'm like. Yeah, thanks, I am experiencing this shit. Perhaps write a story that makes sense next time instead of pointing that out.

DARK KNIGHT - Unfortunately this is my favorite Tank 🫡 which is rough since it has the worst survivability out of any of them. But I love how you use MP and the silly number of OGCDs. The Blackest Night is such a fun ability and it's a crime that it's not a baseline skill you get from the start. Why do they have so many DRs that only cover magic damage. I must ask.

Story Tier: S, there's a reason it's the most popular and well regarded class storyline. It's really good, also the only questline I know of that uses the quest log text as part of the narrative. Outside maybe a few of the very late Endwalker quests. And, well... same writer lmao

GUNBREAKER: I think GNB looks cool as fuck and I like that it has 2 DPS rotations. The Gnashing Fang combo is so fun. Superbolide memes are always fun. My main issue with it is a skill issue because I am just constantly misaligning its burst windows.

Story Tier: C. It has some interesting lore but I found it pretty forgettable as a story.

HEALERS

WHITE MAGE: I hated White Mage for a while but something clicked and now I totally get it. I find it fun in dungeons cause you get to Holy spam and stun lock everything. As uh. The healer. That's fun. Once you get Afflatus heals (and then Afflatus Misery) it clicks. It's fun maximizing damage and playing chicken with the tank's HP.

Story Tier: B, you get a lot of lore around the Padjal, and I think the Stormblood story where you find a padjal living in hiding with her mother is pretty good! Also it's not technically the job storyline but there's a WHM side quest to get a unicorn mount? i guess it's technically a CNJ quest but same diff. no one else gets that shit. so that's cool

SCHOLAR: probably my least favorite of the healers... it just feels super clunky. You can tell a bunch of different design philosophies went into it over the years and none of them mesh very well. They've made it so the Fairy Gauge controls literally one spell. Why have the gauge at all? It's also a huge missed opportunity that there's no tie in or interaction with the fae in Shadowbringers. I love the idea of a battle tactician healer but I think it needs a rework.

Story Tier: B+, I liked the characters and its the main way to get backstory and lore on what happened with Nym.

ASTROLOGIAN: While I think AST has a similar issue to SCH (lots of different design philosophies over the years) I find it way more fun to play. I like the card mechanic and how it interacts with the rest of the party. AST is basically the only job that has its own like. Minigame? As part of its rotation. And I know a lot of people don't like the RNG for it but personally I find it fun. I know AST is getting a redesign in Dawntrail so hope it's good.

Story Tier: C? I think? I'll be honest I don't remember it super well but I didn't find anything objectionable about it. And I like the tarot aesthetic and lore and how it's healing based on manipulating luck.

SAGE: I think SGE is tons of fun, I'm not sure if I like it or WHM more. I love all the skills SGE has for preventing damage and the gimmick where your DPS heals someone in the party. Visually the hi-tech laser shooting healer is a lot of fun. IT HAS A GAP CLOSER. The only thing i wish was it wasn't so MP negative and that it did more damage. It's a little sad its DPS output is so low compared to the other healers (even AST when you factor in how it buffs the party). Since SGE is supposed to be a healer that heals through damage it's silly its damage kinda sucks.

Story Tier: A, I loved this storyline. Both the Endwalker job stories are very self contained and interesting. While the twist is pretty obvious it's still an interesting exploration of uh. Scientific ethics. Yeah

PHYSICAL MELEE DPS

MONK: I've probably played MNK the least of the phys melee but I like the whole adaptable combo thing. Not much else to say since I have played it so little. Might bring it back out and try again. It DID have the funniest guide in the Balance discord for a while.

Story Tier: D. I think? I remember thinking it was dumb, lmao. Sorry.

DRAGOON: MAN I wished I liked DRG more. It looks so fucking cool and I like how it interacts with the dragon lore. But I find it very punishing to play. To do good damage you have to align so many different cooldowns... and snapshot your DOT correctly... and screwing one thing up just fucks your DPS output forever. Like AST I believe this is being reworked in Dawntrail so I hope it feels better to play.

Story Tier: C+. I think it starts strong since you get to meet Estinien pre-Heavensward and it melds nicely with that story. But I found it pretty directionless post-HW which is a shame.

NINJA: I remember finding this one fun. I like that there are different combos you do that have varied finishers depending on the situation. I am just... bad at remembering which combo to use to get which finisher, lol. So I haven't played it as much. NIN gets a lot of flavor other jobs don't get with their unique run and jump animations. And you get a Bunny of Shame on your head if you fuck up a combo, which is incredible.

Story Tier: A. The Rogue story is probably the most memorable of the basic class quests. Ninja just has great characters and a fun story. What is with that one guy. Karasu? If you know you know. I also like how the Rogue characters show up later in the Ninja story. That's fun.

SAMURAI: I had a similar experience to WHM here because I initially hated it then really came around once it clicked. SAM seems very complex, it has a ton of buttons and different combos. But it is actually quite intuitive once you figure out the general pattern. And it does INSANE damage. I think it's the highest DPS output in the game? I love building the combos and then doing a huge finisher for a bajillion damage. The guaranteed crits and constant OGCD weaves make me feel unstoppable. I think this is tied with RPR for me.

Story Tier: B+. I found the exiled samurai character and his journey toward redemption very compelling. I won't spoil beyond that. However it does fall apart a little in the second half. Still fun but not as good.

REAPER: I love RPR, the teleportation is a lot of fun, and I love finally unleashing the demon form and going ham on the enemy. The weapons are the coolest looking in the game. Every scythe design hits. I probably played this the most in Endwalker. My main critique is the Death's Design mechanic. I hate having to keep a stupid debuff on the target to do damage. It's like a dot but without the optimized snapshotting. If they want to keep this idea i think it would feel better to change it into something like SGE's Kardia where you apply it to one enemy to do increased damage to it without having to worry about reapplying it. not sure how they would balance this for aoe but that's not my job. But even with that caveat I still really enjoy the job.

Story Tier: A+. While it doesn't reach the highs of DRK's story it comes close. I love the badass old lady main character. Her hunting a voidsent that possessed her grandfather would be cool enough but making her a Garlean exile in hiding who grudgingly agrees to train you just adds an extra cool factor. I really enjoyed this story. As a bonus theres a lot of incidental dialogue in the post-6.0 Endwalker story if you completed the RPR story because it ties in a lot.

PHYSICAL RANGED DPS

BARD: It's a bit clunky, its got some outdated design elements, it has one of the lowest damage outputs in the game... and i LOVE IT. this was technically the first job I ever played? totally different character like 8 years ago. and i was so so bad. I think i am actually pretty good at current BRD. the animations look cool. i like that it's a class you really need to work for and optimize to eke out that last bit of damage. and boosting everyone else's damage by existing is kinda neat.

Story Tier: B. I'll be real I barely remember this but I do remember it was gay as fuck so immediately gets an extra tier for that.

MACHINIST: MCH is really funny right now because like. It's phys ranged, right. The design behind phys ranged is you have 100% uptime cause you can freely move around and not have to worry about cast timers or melee range or anything. So the trade off is that they do less damage than other classes. Endwalker MCH did not get the memo and does insane damage anyway. My controversial opinion is that it has similar burst DPS to RPR. No i will not elaborate. I'm also bad at doing good damage on MCH which is impressive since it is easy.

Story Tier: B+. Some Ishgard noble's gay son wants to build machines instead of killing dragons the good old fashioned way and has to prove himself to get taken seriously. A tale as old as time. See I haven't done this quest in like years but I still remember it. He is a memorable character. It's just not like. knockout wowza compared to the A tier stories.

DANCER: Dancer is the second easiest DPS job in the game behind SMN. So if i am sleepy it's the one I like playing. You play simon says. you do a lot of damage when you play simon says then do almost no fucking damage otherwise. I think it's the lowest direct damage in the game? for a dps i mean. You have high stakes sexual tension with a DPS of your choice via Dance Partner. I wish other DNC players knew how Dance Partner works. YOU CAN DANCE PARTNER ANOTHER DANCER. THE BUFF STACKS. BUT YOU CANNOT DANCE PARTNER THE SAME PLAYER AS ANOTHER DANCER. THOSE BUFFS DO NOT STACK. ok i'm good. anyway

Story Tier: C. there's some shit about negative emotions and purging them? in theory i think this has some interesting implications with Endwalker lore considering Dynamis and its role in the story. Very similar mechanically to what's going on with the DNC story. but i really don't think the writers made the connection so it's like pure speculation and not the actual story. It's meh. fine i guess. i did like all the flashy dancing sequences.

MAGICAL RANGED DPS

BLACK MAGE: I am so so so so so so so bad at BLM. i pull up the guide. i read the guide. it all makes perfect sense. i go into a dungeon or trial or something. somehow i always get like Zeromus or some shit. and i drop Enochian or something and everything goes to shit and i'm yelling and i'm not even like slide casting or teleporting or anything i just run around crying. then i remember i have like 10 more buttons i haven't been pressing and oh god the dot fell off. people play this? for fun? i admire it. apparently they do a ton of damage if you can play it. could not be me.

Story Tier: B? There's some voidsent and Thirteenth lore. all the black mage characters are Lalafell because it's funny i guess. OH YEAH it has like the one named male Keeper of the Moon Miqo'te NPC in the entire game and he's fun. look at this twink:

SUMMONER: easiest DPS job in the entire game. they redesigned it for Endwalker so it is practically a new job. i have no idea how it played before. but it is super streamlined. maybe too streamlined? it's another one to play if you want to turn your brain off. i like that at 90 you summon The Actual Primals instead of little representations of them. and i like the way your burst phase switches between Bahamut and Phoenix. it all looks very cool. they should add Leviathan as a summon in Dawntrail.

Story Tier: C.. i don't remember a single thing about this questline except you interact with Y'shtola's half sister. i think you go to Cartenau at some point. idk

RED MAGE: RDM is one of those jobs that looks really complicated when you start then you actually play it and it is just super super easy. that being said i think it's really fun. I like balancing the white and black magic gauges. Dualcast is a great gimmick and it feels cool to lob two big spells in a row at something. Dualcast Verraising a chain of dead players is so fucking funny. it's a shame that the existence of Verraise means RDM does shit damage to compensate for its utility. It and DNC just sit at the bottom with BRD barely scratching ahead of them. i think? i don't remember LOL

Story Tier: A, I really like the story and characters. I like that you have a middle-age world weary catboy (catman) as your mentor. and i like that he canonically trained Alisaie too and you chat a little about that. it's a fun story!

BLUE MAGE: what the fuck is a blue mage

The Chief Justice and the Worst Painter in Fontaine Chapter 3 Bonus Scenes

Unexpected Run-In

After spending some time underwater, you could now confidently say that this was now your second-favorite place in the world, after your apartment, of course. Everything felt so peaceful and dream-like down here. Time seemed to progress at the pace of molasses.

I could stay down here forever, you thought. Perhaps you could take diving classes or hire a diver to escort you down here, though the idea of being separated from the water by a bulky suit didn't appeal to you very much. If only you had a Vision...

You much preferred this--swimming in the water as lightly and nimbly as a fish, with Neuvillette's strong, reassuring grip on your arm. The idea of asking him to take you on underwater trips was dismissed as quickly as you considered it. It just wouldn't be possible.

Neuvillette seemed to be enjoying himself as well, though he didn't look like it at first glance. He must have liked looking at the sea creatures as much as you did, since his eyes softened whenever you would pull him over to look at a Blubberbeast or an otter.

The same couldn't be said when the two of you ran into schools of those mechanical fish. He didn't seem to care for them very much, and although you thought they looked kind of cool, you couldn't say you didn't understand why Neuvillette felt the way he did. They stuck out like a sore thumb against the gentle blues and greens of the water.

Speaking of sore thumbs...

"Monsieur Neuvillette, what are those?" You pointed at two purple rays a short distance ahead of you. They were a different color from the other rays you'd seen. Was it just your imagination, or did they give off a menacing aura?

"Ah, those two are the Fairy Knight Twins, Angelica and Medoro. They're just as lively as the last time I saw them. How wonderful," Neuvillette said.

"Oh, they have names?" Pretty fancy titles for a couple of fish, you thought.

As if they read your mind, the two rays swam towards you two. You looked up at Neuvillette, but he didn't seem to have any intention of moving away. In fact, he was looking at the two rays, which were now opening their glowing blue mouths, like he was looking at long-missed pets.

You screamed and hid behind Neuvillette as two sharp arcs of light sliced towards you. Neuvillette simply dodged them with ease, not a hair out of place. To your horror, he was swimming closer to those things.

After much pleading and tugging on your part, he agreed to take you somewhere else.

You later decided that you weren't quite ready to go back underwater any time soon.

What Freminet Saw

As usual, Freminet was in his blue sanctuary, spending time with his silent friends, the Tidalga and the Romaritime Flowers. He knew this area like the back of his hand. The observatory here had long been unused. There was no need to worry about running into anyone else here.

That was what he thought...until he saw two figures.

Even the normally expressionless Freminet widened his eyes as he recognized one of the figures.

Is that...the Chief Justice?

His distinctive appearance was unmistakable. He was holding another person by their arm. Freminet didn't recognize them. They were diving without a suit on, but they didn't appear to be a Vision holder. It was probably thanks to the Chief Justice's powers.

Freminet watched as the other person excitedly pulled the Chief Justice along as they gazed at the underwater creatures and plants. Freminet remembered his first time diving and seeing this quiet, serene world. It made him somewhat nostalgic.

But putting that aside, this was a strange sight. The Chief Justice was known to not associate with humans very much, and yet here he was.

Freminet had only seen the Chief Justice a few times. Not in the opera house, but standing silently on the beach. Freminet had found him unreadable during those times, but now...even from here, he could sense a certain warmth and possibly...affection exuding from him in the way he looked at and held the other person.

Hmm...

Freminet wasn't good at reading people, and his only experience with romance was the stories in his fairytale books. But he could tell that this person, whoever they were, was important to the Chief Justice.

He watched as that person cooed in delight at a group of otters, then they seemed to tense up a bit before pulling themselves out of the Chief Justice's grip.

"Ah..." a soft cry slipped out of Freminet's mouth as he watched them fall towards the seabed. But it was the look on the Chief Justice's face that really shocked him. A look of pure panic. It looked so out of place there.

The Chief Justice quickly caught their companion. Freminet could hear them both apologizing to each other.

He decided to swim somewhere else. For some reason, he felt like he was intruding on a couple's private time together.

“mmh…” Killer hummed pleasantly as his wings shuddered. The heat was slowly returning to his limbs and body, and the heaviness that’d fallen over his sockets softened, though only slightly. The furs just felt so good beneath him. “crossy…”

“shush, don’t talk and save your energy, idiot,” Cross muttered, brows furrowed in stress and anxiety as he desperately rubbed Killer’s arms, legs, stomach, chest, and wings. He’d found the fool just outside the main gate to Error’s Mountain halls, and he’d been half dead from the cold, though he’d smiled when he’d noticed Cross rushing towards him in a flurry of panic.

“why would you even come here when there was a snowstorm…” Cross said, teeth gritted.

“took me by surprise,” Killer replied.

“bullshit. it’s been raging on for days and i know you’ve been aware of error’s sour mood. it shows no sign of stopping.”

“heh… yeah… but i wanted to see you. it’s been too long.”

Carefully Killer reached out and took one of Cross’s larger hands, and he pulled him closer as he simultaneously nuzzled against him. “cuddle me, cross. i want to be enveloped by you. you’re so soft and warm.”

Cross wanted to scold Killer. Wanted to tell him that this was no time for flirting and that—that he could have died out there and shouldn’t brush it off with a simple remark that he missed—

…

Biting his lip, Cross held Killer close to his bare ecto, sharing his body heat as his wings enveloped his mate’s smaller body. He was still a little cold but luckily, he was nowhere near as freezing as when he’d first taken him into his lantern. The bundle of moss, furs, and wool around them certainly helped in making the space warm, too.

“… you nearly died,” Cross said, his voice close to breaking.

“… i missed you…” killer whispered, curling up tighter, his forehead resting against Cross’ collarbone.

“…”

“you’re so warm, crossy.”

“not warm enough.”

“heh, warm enough to make me feel safe.”

Cross didn’t respond to that, but he allowed himself to settle down as the quiet of the nest grew around them. He wasn’t used to someone being so desperate for his presence, but he must have underestimated Killer’s devotion to him because he’d never, not even in his wildest dreams, imagined that the red fairy would travel through a wild snowstorm to reach him after just a few days apart.

“…”

“… killer.”

“mmh?”

“From this day on… you’ll live in my nest.”

“… heh.”

Killer shuddered, though Cross couldn’t tell if it was from residual cold, or something else entirely. What he did notice was that something wet trickled over his collarbone and that Killer pressed himself closer to him, hiding his face.

Beauty and the Beast, but it's Metadede?

Ohohoho-!! This one really got me thinking!! :D If I had unlimited emotional bandwidth and time this could be a fun concept to explore a BUNCH! I'm a sucker for fairy tales! I'm not capable of fully developing this idea right now, but I did brainstorm a little bit!

There's some aspects of that story that I just can't think of good parallels for (Like Gaston, Belle's dad, Belle's character motivations and such). So this is more Beauty and the Beast inspired than being a perfect retelling.

Anyways, ENOUGH TALK. LET'S GO.

So when I read this ask, I immediately got slammed with a very passionate and explosive Brain Blast: Dedede as Beast!! BUT he's got an appearance inspired by King D-Mind (And Dark Mind by extension) and a beastly demeanor like his Primal form in Forgotten Land. So this is not Shadow Dedede!! Important distinction!

Like Dedede's personality in early Kirby games, he would be selfish and arrogant enough to be cursed by an Enchantress to find true love and compassion. (So the rose and its petals are still connected to this curse's time limit.) But at his core there is a being capable of love, compassion, and self-sacrifice! It just takes a bit of character development to get there!

Meta stumps me a bit more. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy singing about how "there must be more than this provincial life..." And who would Gaston even be?? Beats me.

So instead of being a damsel from a small town with big dreams, maybe he's some kind of traveling knight or mercenary who has always worked alone. He's got a stoic demeanor that can even come off as cold since he doesn't make many meaningful connections with others. But those walls he's put up over his life are indeed capable of coming down with a little care!

You'll also have to forgive me for how little I changed Meta's design... I did this during my lunch break and all I could think of was adding some gold flourishes to his outfit- but there is definitely more potential there than I came up with!!

Why would he get stuck being Dedede's prisoner? Perhaps he bartered someone else's imprisonment for his own. Or he found himself in debt by chance to the King, or accidentally disturbed/destroyed/or damaged something important to him and has to pay with a prison sentence.

Whatever the reason, he's truly stuck living there. And they super do not get along at first. Dedede's fiery temper and Meta's colder exterior would be at odds a lot of the time.

Jumping ahead a bit, here's that scene from the original where Beast defends Belle from a bunch of wild wolves (but here they're Primal Awoofies!)

And from there, the character development continues.... Meta warms up a little and shows more emotion and vulnerability than he ever has before. Dedede cools down in turn and learns that he is worthy of affection and genuine connection... And so on and so on~

As for the supporting character roles filled by "Beast's servants," I figure most of Kirby's allies could be in this role! I just only explored Bandee and Kirby to start with.

I had trouble coming up with household object forms for them (granted I didn't invest that much time into it). So I thought about another time-sensitive form they could take that is high-stakes enough that they'd want to turn back to normal and break the curse. So I came up with the ghostly angel form that happens when you get knocked out in Kirby Fighters. :)

So there you have it! A few days worth of daydreaming for a metadede Beauty and the Beast-type story! Hehe. If anyone happens to find themselves inspired and wants to develop this further as an exercise in AU writing or just plain having fun with it, DO IT! This is my donation to the internet, lol.

It wasn't unusual for Xavier to sit alone as he watches his friends reunite with their family every year. He was never his father's priority, and thankfully it doesn't bug him as much as it used to.

What made this year even lonelier was the fact he didn't even have you to keep him company.

He's given up all attempts to talk to you after always being shut down.

Now he just stares longingly when you pass by him, wishing he could turn back time and redid everything he's done wrong.

He sighs as he watches Bianca walks away with her often distant mother. Even she had someone with her.

His heart aches and he knows it's his own fault, always wanting more than he needed, and ending up losing all he ever had.

You were nowhere to be seen today, his wandering eyes keep search of you.

He wonders if it's as hard for you as it is for him. Having no living family member left, loneliness was a part of your being before he came into your life, but you made it look easy when you shrugged his presence off your life, resuming back to silent days alone through classes.

Xavier snaps himself out of his thoughts before deciding to head towards his shed, if there was one thing he could do today was make the best of the solace.

Today was a no-off campus day, unless you had a guardian or parent with you, all students must remain inside. But being invisible was one of your specialty, literally.

You found yourself in your usual comfort spot deep inside the woods.

Though other people might fear going in this far, you were used to it. The forest was your home, even without a family, you had made it your own.

You spotted the large circle of mushrooms you've planted in the middle of the ground and sighed in relieved before slinging your backpack off before laying in the middle.

Even the most foolish of fools knew that fairy circles were nothing but myths, yet sometimes you'd lie in the circle with your eyes closed, basking in the sunbeams through the trees, imagining the dead hands of your fairy mother coming and whisking you away.

And then you'd wake up.

You had came here less and less since you've gotten close with Xavier, he became as close as a family could be to you.

But today, the tantalizing reminder of his offense burnt through your mind like adding salt to fresh wound, as if being forced to watch everyone with their families wasn't painful enough.

You have never felt more alone.

You jerk up suddenly at the loud sound of rustling bushes and frown at your surroundings, trying to find the source.

Getting up to investigate, you slowly walk while crouching down step by step, peeking inside the overgrown bushes in front of you.

An ear perked up and your breath hitches as you froze at the sight.

The loud meowing noise forces the air of relief to leave you, sighing heavily.

Your body relaxes and you let out a short laugh at your panicked state before reaching your hand out to pet the black cat.

Before you could touch it, it welps loudly and jumped over your head, pushing your back to the ground before running away.

"What the fuck." Your heart skipped fast at the sudden attack of the furry creature and you almost cursed it for rejecting your affection.

That was until you saw what it was running from.

Hand on your head, trying to soothe the pain the black cat inflicted, your eyes took it's time to notice the large lingering beast in front of you. And your legs fails you as it leaped forward.

"I don't have time for this Ajax-" Xavier groans at his friend for the fifth time as he grabs his jacket after covering his canvas.

"I'm telling you man- whatever you do, do not get her dog food as an apology gift." The gargoyle insists sternly after multiple suggestions on how to get you to forgive Xavier.

"Why the fuck would I get her dog food?" He asks confused.

Ajax shrugged, "I don't know, but I tried it with Enid once, let's just say it didn't work out well."

Xavier frowns at him and shook his head before turning to leave the shed, "Whatever just- lock the door for me when you leave, alright?"

He hears Ajax's 'I got you man' and focuses his steps towards the woods, his feet fast moving as his mind races equally as fast and nerve-wreckingly.

He knew why Wednesday suspected him as the Hyde, almost everytime an attack happened, he's there. He couldn't have told her of his dreams, his visions, of every single future victim, always almost too late appearing to him.

A girl like her would use such information againts him.

"We need to get her help." His voice stern as he turns to Wednesday.

The girl only glares at him, "How did you know she was here?"

He flinches at her accusing tone and frowns.

"Because I know her. Now if you're going to keep accusing me of being the Hyde, can you at least wait until she gets help?" He snaps at her, clutching you right to him as you moan in pain.

Wednesday nods abruptly and starts walking forward. "We need to get her to the hospital, before too much blood runs out-"

"No! Not the hospital-" You bursted out She halts her steps and turns to you I'm confusion.

"This is not the time to play tough [name], you're fatally wounded and my expertise only goes as far as minimal wound stitchings." She scolds you, her voice raising.

The surgery ended two hours ago, and the last thing you remembered was Xavier's voice begging you not to pass out, something about a concussion.

If you felt terrible earlier, now was just as bad.

Tubes of water needles straight into your arms, you open your eyes, taking in the white walls of your worst nightmare.

Still, you were grateful that they'd fixed you up. You could barely move your lower body and your stomach aches terribly, but you were alive at least.

You look towards the door as a nurse enter with a tray of needles. "Hello sweetheart." She greeted you, seemingly pleased that you're awake.

"I know you probably feel horrible now, so I'm just going to inject some antibiotics and painkillers for you alright?" You nod weakly and surrender you arms to her as she does her work.

She leaves a moment after, the painkiller doing wonders for your pounding headache as you fall back into sleep, giving your body the rest it needed.

You snap awake at the sudden feeling of a presence.

Your hands tightly clutches the fingers holding yours.

"It's me, it's just me." He speaks up to calm you down immediately.

You breathed out a relieved sigh when you saw Xavier's face, sitting by your side.

"You're here." You mumbled out, drowsy.

"Always. I'll always be here." He assures you gently, his thumb tracing your knuckles before bringing it to his lips and kissing it.

"I'm sorry, I was too late." You shook your head and squeezed his hand. "You couldn't have known."

His brows furrowed and he attempts to read your sincerity. "You're not going to ask me how I knew?"

You smiled at him and shook your head. "Well I know for one thing you're not the Hyde, you're too stupid for that."

A shy grin escapes him and he snorts.

"Wednesday shouldn't have known I was there either, but she did, and she's not the monster too. So whenever you're ready to tell me your little secret, I'll be right here." You tell him understandingly.

It was that moment, all his past guilt comes slithering in. He was so stupid and he almost lost you because of it, he wouldn't trade you for the world, especially not for some random girl or ex girlfriends, you are more than a phase for him.

Before he could open his mouth the get a word up, you shook your head and shushed him. "Whatever you need to say, tell me after I get enough sleep." You forced.

He gulps and nods his head.

Traveler steps into a abandoned domain. They moved the tree branches that over-grown into the domain and searched around the area.

"Nothing seems to be here Paimon. I think we were just hearing things."

"But Paimon was sure she heard something!"

The traveler tries to reassure Paimon that they were just hearing things until the traveler leaned on the wall and pushed a hidden button. They both paused as they heard some stone moving.

Traveler carefully stepped into the new founded room...nothing...happened? They went in the room still cautious. It was pitch black so the traveler has to spread the arms out and just try to imagine what the rooms looks like and so they don't bump their head on something.

Suddenly, the Paimon screamed, the traveler quickly turned around and headed towards Paimon's scream. The traveler stood there shocked and horrified. They saw a eyeball staring at them. Black liquid drips from the opened eyeball as it stared at the 2 trespassers. Suddenly, the liquid that seems to come out non-stop became read then gold.

The light was suddenly on.

"WAS THAT EYEBALL THE LIGHTSWITCH?!"

Paimon was grossed out as the traveler tried to not laugh at her reaction. A chill went down on their spine, then panic as both of them couldn't move. Their heart almost dropped into their stomach as they heard a voice.

The unknown person chuckled. They got closer to them as the traveler shivered from the cold hands that touched their face.

The unknown person was finally revealed. Well...not really since seems like a veil is covering most of their head. It was quite a length. While the clothes were fully covering their body.

Both of them were stunned when they heard multiple voices that sounded exactly the same if some didn't sound like their vocals was damaged or something.

If you really, really, REALLY want him to... he'll do it to make you happy. However, he will basically turn your room into a nest at night and cover you with cuddles all night long... because he's scared to death. Poor Lixie. You will have a much better experience if you pick a comedy or action. He'll still cuddle you (if you want it) but it won't be out of fear. And nobody wants a scared Lix. He deserves to be happy.

Also, on this note of Fae Felix. Just so you know, you're not supposed to give fairies your name. No matter how much they beg.

However, Felix is literally the one that you could tell anything and he wouldn't use it against you. You're secret is safe with him. As is your soul.

Now, in summary : It's all important but here are your TOP 3 to remember!

Number One: Please provide adequate love, affection and care for your Faelix.
