hinata would be the type of guy to let your dates go unplanned (in a good way!!!) ypu guys get to do whatever you'd like, unrestrained. if you wanna go to a goodwill/thrift store and find cool items, he'd happily go with you. he'll also secretly get you some things that you stared at for too long. like those sparkly pink cowboy boots, a music box where instead of a ballerina spinning it's a middle finger, and a bikini that barely covers anything. then after buying those, you'd go in your car, and he'd hide them under the car seat, but the bikini's straps stick out from under the seat, and you go "what the fuck is that??" so he has no choice but to bring out the bag filled with the stuff you looked like you wanted, and surprised you early. do you want to go to an indoor volleyball court? hinata rented one just for the two of you to play. but you never got to play anything, you two are busy running around, playing hide and seek in the surprisingly large building. yes, for other people, things don't always go to plan. but for you two? you make the best out of unplanned surprises.

kenma would be the type of guy to really REALLY appreciate all of your pitiful efforts to pay him back for what he buys you. he loves, LOVES spoiling you, spending his CEO money on you is his love language. even though he acts a little nonchalant about it, he always loves seeing the smile on your face when he bought you something you've wanted for so long. but, you'd feel bad about what he's spending on you, and the effort he puts into working so hard 24/7, and going with you to the mall and buying you everything. so, you decide to repay him in different ways! like baking cookies that took you all day to bake but they taste bitter, but he still eats all of them in one sitting. you made him lots of origami flowers, he'd have it displayed in his room, without a single speck of dust landing on the paper, he knows that you feel guilty about him spending lots on you so you do these things, he keeps telling you that what he's spending on you isn't going to make a dent in his bank account, but you still wouldn't listen. (he secretly freaks out if you do things for him)

kageyama would be the type of guy to learn about anything you're into, and he'd teach you about what he's into in return. if you like a certain singer/band, and you love to quote a line from a song/an inside joke, he's going to be curious about it, and eventually, he'll start quoting it too, (at the start, he usually had trouble deciding whether or not the situation you're in would apply, but he's quoting that lyric/inside joke like he knows that band/singer better than you do.) he taught you volleyball, do you love spiking? he'd set for you, and you'd drive that ball home. do you prefer setting? he's gonna make you attend setter bootcamp, on god he's gonna turn into your coach instead of your boyfriend. you like blocking? he'd make sure he'd get his hits past your blocks, and of course tell you all sorts of positions you put your hands in if you want to change the trajectory of the ball, or completely shut it out. do you like recieving? he'll throw different types of serves your way so you'll learn how to recieve all of them perfectly. or if you'd love serving more, he'd be teaching you how to get service aces and eventually be better at serving than his team (according to him). he may be a pro volleyball player, but that doesn't mean he won't make time for you.

atsumu would be the type of guy to relax and pamper yourselves in his free time. despite his loud and rowdy personality, you and mr japanese barry b benson with a kansai accent, oftentimes go to spas, and get massages, facial treatments, all that good stuff. then he'd take you out to a hot spring after a major tournament is over, the steaming water helping to relax, and also give his skin some benefits too! after all, he's a volleyball player that has the looks of an idol, he has a face and body he has to maintain. if you guys don't want to go out, he'll look up recipes for diy mud masks to apply to eachothers faces, maybe even bringing out a stash of facemasks from his skincare mini frige and watch a movie together while waiting for the facemask to dry out. you're pretty lucky to have a skincare boyfriend, since you have never had a single skin problem ever since you started dating him. if there's an event you two will be attending, he'll prioritize the both of you looking and feeling fresh. you two would be the couple with the clearest skin in the room.

"The Oedipal Struggle of Dostoevsky Toward Gogol" (Piotr Axer) - My synthesis

Hello guys it's been a long time since i haven't posted so i'm back with this synthesis of an amazing work i just read !!

You guys probably don't know about it but i'm a huge fan of literature, especially English, Japanese and Russian (even if i don't know a lot about this latter one). And today i decided to do some research about Nikolai Gogol's life & works as i already ordered some of his books. While looking for one of his specific works (i was looking for a pdf english translation of 'Hans Küchelgarten') i found a dissertation by Piotr Axer about (in large) the influence Gogol's works had on Dostoyevski's works. As i'm reading 'Crime and punishment' and planning on reading some Gogol's novels (+ i'm a huge fan of fyolai) i decided to read it. To be honest it was quite long (around 220 pages) but really interesting and i did a quick synthesis of it but instead of keeping it for myself i chose to share it here so fyolai fans, literature fans and lazy people can learn stuff (the link of the original work is at the end of the post for those who wanna go deeper and read it).

Few informations about both of the authors :

Fyodor Dostoyevski : Russian author/novelist ; 11th november 1821 - 9th february 1881 ; naturalism, realism

Nikolai Gogol : Ukrainian (russian empire) author/novelist/poet/dramatist/literary critic ; 1st april 1809 - 4th march 1852 ; formalism, realism

Sythesis :

We can feel Gogol's influence on Dostoyevski's works in many ways, but the most noticable one is the references to Gogol's characters :

"His entire estate consisted of just an overcoat, like Akaki Akakievich" ('Petersburg Dreams in Verse and Prose') => Akaki being the main character of 'The Overcoat' (one if not the most famous of Gogol's novels)

"to keep asking about Garibaldi and about italian affairs, as Poprishchin did about Spanish matters … And thus there formed within him little by little the incontrovertible assurance that he was in fact Garibaldi, brigand and violator of the natural order of things" ('Petersburg Tales') => which is an actual reference to one of the titular characters of 'Diary of a Madman' (Nikolai Gogol) whom belives himself to be Garibaldi (political italian figure, 1807-1882).

In his early years of writting Dostoyevski can't evade Gogol's influence like a young man cannot escape his parents' influence and this even if their works aren't in the same style at all (Dostoyevski : more realistic, dark and mysterious / Gogol : more satiric, controversial and humour oriented).

On the other hand, Dostoyevski critized Gogol's religious opinions but he was mostly criticizing his morals and aesthetics. However, Dostoyevski explains his religious opinions and his understanding of the use of religion in literature through 'The village of Stepanchikovo'.

In conclusion we can say that Gogol's work had a huge impact on Dostoyevski works. By being an influence at the beginning of his career but also while the maturating process of Dostoyevski's works and artistic opinions as he was contesting Gogol's aesthetic, personality and religious ideas.

opm 179/224(jp) TL commentary

so, about the Saitama vs Tatsumaki battle in the latest chapter.

Normally, I’m tired enough at the end of the work day that when the JP OPM chapter updates drop, I'm happy to just skim the chapter and wait for the usual fan TL team to do their good work and drop the English translation the next day. Usually, I find them very decent and competent.

This time around, however, Saitama’s lines on this particular page had me sitting up a little straighter.

I thought his word choice was oddly far too chummy given his usual personality and his attitude towards people like Tatsumaki, so I decided to check the original Japanese pages again and sure enough, found that I gleaned a very different idea from the JP lines. I would definitely have translated these differently.

Let’s take a look at the 2 phrases in question.

1. “She’s not in the mood to chat at all” (JP: 全然会話になんねえーな )

The plain form of this (i.e. after you distill it from Saitama’s typical style of speech) is 全然会話にならない which is far more often representative of the sentiment “It’s impossible trying to get through to you/this person”. It literally translates to “This is not becoming a 2-way conversation at all” or "you can't have a 2-way conversation with this person"; Google “会話にならない英語” and you will see multiple suggestions along the lines of “It’s no use talking to you.”

This phrase is used to indicate that the other party is not willing to listen, usually to something important the speaker has to say. Saitama isn’t looking to have a friendly “chat”, he’s trying to make a point to Tatsumaki about not attacking other heroes and laying off his new home before that gets destroyed too. So, while the use of “chat” may help to preserve the lazy informality of his speaking style, it downplays the severity of the situation and his annoyance at her not getting his point.

I personally would’ve used “Ugh, she’s not gonna listen at all, is she” or “Ugh, talking isn’t gonna work at all, is it” or a similar variation.

2. “Guess I’ll keep her company for now” (JP: 相手しとくか)

Context is everything. Just because “keep company” is the first option in a whole list of different definitions that pops up when you do a dictionary search doesn’t mean that it’s the right definition to use for a translation/localization. Nor does it mean it’s how the phrase is most commonly used in practice.

I'd wager you don’t even need to have much RL experience in Japan or with Japanese people to know which definition should've been picked. Watch enough shonen and sports anime with the original Japanese audio and you’ll soon learn that any time there is a pair activity, game and most importantly, a fight, 相手 i.e. “aite” refers to “opponent”. In a classroom setting, being asked to “相手して” doesn’t mean to keep a student “company”, it means to take up the opposite role in pair work. I’d add that in the close to 15 years I’ve spent studying and/or speaking Japanese, and the 3.5 years spent living and working in Japan, I’ve never heard this phrase being used to mean “keep somebody company” - but since experience can also be subjective, let’s just look at what we can be certain about: context, and our own knowledge of the target language and all its nuances.

a. Context - What’s happening, and who is saying it: Are they fighting? Yes. As opponents? Yes. Is Saitama referring to their fight and a strategy he's going to take (i.e. letting her tire herself out)? Most certainly, yes. Is this line being said by the same guy who thinks of Fubuki only as an acquaintance who's always dragging him into her business against his will, the same guy who in the last frame of this very chapter is thinking to himself "Man I reeeeeaallly wanna go home"? Yes. Should you have picked a definition more related to fighting and opponents from the dictionary's MANY different options like, idk, "take on a rival" to base your translation on? Yyeeess??? Why wouldn't you have?

b. Decision-making when localizing a text: What does “keep somebody company” imply in English? Is there a better way to phrase this and make the localized script more representative of the situation and the character's intent, and less loaded with English meaning that isn't present anywhere else in the text? I mean, Saitama certainly isn't suddenly thinking about loneliness and company when he mentions the lack of buildings and people - a safer distance away from civilization he deliberately went to the trouble of bringing Tatsumaki to.

I'd take some creative/artistic license here myself to make the language less stiff, but would definitely have gone for something less distorted, like "Guess I'll keep her occupied for now". If unsure, then even a more literal "Guess I'll take her on for now" would do a very decent job of conveying Saitama's intent, staying faithful to the original language without sounding too stiff when inserted into the sentence they came up with.

But well, who'm I to talk, eh? Translators are humans, there's no way to be completely objective in any interpretation, and they still do far more work than I am willing/able to do for this manga every update. I just wonder if they were letting certain biases guide their interpretations rather more than usual this time. Suffice to say, I'll be very curious to see how the guys at Viz choose to frame this bit for the official English TLs.

and shigaraki takes an interest in you so after round 4 he offers you to join the lov so you join but under 3 conditions (you pick the conditions)

and yeah you and dabi get close like before and the two of you start dating

*Flashback*

You met Dabi when you both were 8 years old. You lived in Japan at the time with your mother, who was a prostitute. You were outside in the woods playing and running around when you accidentally ran into a boy who was training with his quirk.

"Oops sorry!" You say to the boy you ran into. Sticking your hand out to offer him help to get up. He grabs your hand and introduces himself.

"It's okay!" "I'm Touya Todoroki!" "What's your name?" He asks as he pulls himself up. You told him your name and he smiles.

"I'm gonna be a hero one day to prove to my old man that I can do it!" He says as he smiles. You look at him amazed and you smile.

"I don't know what I want to be... but I do know I want to help my mom! You say grinning at him.

He takes your hand and smiles.

"Let's be heroes together!"

You were walking on the sidewalk when you saw a picture of Touya and missing on it. Your eyes widen and tear up.

Clearly upset that he is missing when you remember him talking about running away and leaving his life behind and him promising to meet you again.

You ended up going home thinking about his promise and wondering if he will keep it. You hope because he had such a nice warming color.

*Flashback Over*

"The final battle between the gods and humans... ROUND 4! Gods have won two, the humans have one win. And now, please welcome THE STRATEGIC POINT OF THIS STAGE!!

The one that has been reproduced here is 19th Century London... Humanity's representative wanted to fight in this place, and the gods' representative... was kind enough to accept.

"I do not relish senseless killing... BUT YOU'RE A SPECIAL CASE!!" He says yelling at the end.

Clearly what he means by special case is that you're a woman.

You roll your eyes before saying. "Sir... Allow me to express my gratitude. Both for accepting this arena, and for your consideration... However, unfortunately, I cannot accept."

You say are you grab your fake weapon, a giant pair of scissors. "What?......" He asks in confusion. "No matter the odds, I shall always accept a duel."

"For that... is the true essence of a gentleman. Allow me to introduce you."

"This... is my weapon. How exquisite." "So, this is a treasue of mine, it could tear anything in existence to pieces..." You say as you cut a lamp post down, shocking the audience.

"Scissors?.." Hercules utters in confusion. He then shakes his head and smiles.

"...Very well. If that is what you've decided... then I'll answer your resolve with all of my might!" He says but then you run in the opposite direction, confusing him again. "Huh?"

(Time Skip to Where Jack gets impaled by the spiked fence.)

You got impaled by a fence, but this was your plan. It had missed all your vital organs caused you helped guide your landing so it didn't hit them.

You pulled the fence out with a loud, painful cry.

(With the Lov, who are watching in the audience.)

Dabi told the league about you from the beginning and Shigaraki was interested in you and wanted you to join. Toga just wanted a new friend. Twice didn't care.

The rest of the league was either interested in you or liked you.

Then Dabi and the rest sees you get impaled and Dabi's eyes slightly widen, he was scared for you and wanted you to defeat the God in front of you.

Shigaraki that you had a plan from the beginning and he was right because in that moment your hands with the gloves on punch the God right in the stomach and went through him.

Dabi smiles happy but he sees that you got hugged by the got and how he disappeared into green particles.

He noticed a sad look on your face as Hercules turned into green particles and how he smiled at you and the audience.

You bow and say "Ta-da." With slight jazz hands but you put your hand back on your wound from where you were impaled.

People from the audience start to throw rocks at you from killing Hercules and you just take it.

And the he saw you leave, probably going to the Infirmary to get your wounds taken care of.

He walk with Shigaraki and Toga to go to the infirmary, he's excited to see you again.

(Back with you)

You were all patched up when there was a knock at your door and you said. "Come in." In a soft voice.

The door opens and reveals Dabi, Shigaraki and Toga. You knew Dabi was Touya cause you found out along time ago.

They come in and Dabi sits on your infirmary bed. You sat up before he sat down.

"Hey, How are you doing? How does it feel to kill a god?"He asks looking at you.

"Honestly? It kinda sucks and now I kinda feel bad for Hercules, but at least he's not in any pain anymore." You say honestly, kinda wanting Hercules to hug you again and show you the warmth your mother never sincerely gave you.

"It will get better." Dabi says holding my hand in his.

You sat there talking and getting to know how he has been doing and getting to know Shigaraki and Toga.

All the sudden Shigaraki asks you to join the Lov.

"Why don't you join us? You would get to see Dabi and kill the wanna be heroes that only do it for the money." Shigaraki offers.

You thinks about it and agree under 3 conditions.

1. You can help people like saving them or rescuing them when the heroes failed.

2. You won't be ordered around, only if it's an emergency. (Like Dabi's trying to light Shigaraki on fire or Shigaraki trying to disintegrate him.

3. You make your own rules for when you do missions and you do it your way not his.

You eventually got together with Dabi, living a nice life with the Lov and him.

DRAGON QUEST'S LOCALIZATION SUCKS, ACTUALLY. PART 2

While my feelings about the almiraj's name are mostly based on personal preference, there are multiple other monster names that have been changed pointlessly to the detriment of the game. Case in point:

This is a slime. Possibly the most iconic and lovable mascot creature ever conceived. Pikachu eat your heart out.

This is a different slime. It's gone by various names over the years. Older translations decided to call it "Red Slime," because it's both red and a slime. They're the obligatory stronger recolored version of an enemy that you meet later on in the game (They might even be the progenitors of that trope.)

The Japanese name for these guys is "スライムベス" (Slime Beth.) The "Beth" part comes from the second letter in the Hebrew alphabet, essentially denoting these guys as the second slime you encounter. There's all sorts of ways you could localize this: maybe Beta Slime? Maybe Slimer, with a later stronger slime called Slimest (A la Horizon's Gate?) Maybe 2lime if you wanna get wacky with it? Or you could just leave it as Slime Beth and preserve the original intention, and maybe have some curious people learn a little about Hebrew in the process.

The current DQ localization team chose none of these options, and instead decided to name these "She-slime." Why? Who knows! The only thing I can figure is they saw slimes are blue and thought "Well blue is boy color and orange is kinda like pink which is girl color!" It's already pretty dumb to pointlessly gender slimes, but it's even dumber given the fact that there are multiple Dragon Quest Monsters games with actual gender mechanics in relation to monster breeding.

But it gets even dumber! When 8 slimes congregate together, they can merge and become a King Slime. So obviously, 8 she-slimes should form a Queen Slime, right? Uh oh! There's already another monster called that!

This is how the localization team painted them into the incredibly awkward sounding "King she-slime"

But wait! We can go dumber! The King she-slime is actually one of two possible monsters that these guys can amalgamate into, and which one you get depends on the gender of all the slimes involved. It's a pointless confusing ambiguity that only exists because the localization team decided to arbitrarily assign a gender to something that didn't need to be gendered in the first place.

And this isn't the first time this has happened. Here's another one:

This is a Golem. They've been a series staple since the first game, where one appeared as a boss monster.

This, according to the current localization, is a Gold Golem. They're fairly weak, but they drop a ton of gold if you manage to kill them, similar to metal slimes with EXP. You can see that the Japanese name for them is literally just the English words "Gold Man." I can at least understand where the localization team were coming from when they changed. After all, it looks like a golem, but it's made of gold, hence "Gold Golem." One small problem:

There's already another monster named that. Keep in mind, the current localization we have didn't start until Dragon Quest 8, so both of these monsters were known entities at this point. So why'd they change it's name to "Balhib?" Again, who knows! According to the wiki, it's a medieval Egyptian name for the Great Sphinx of Giza. I'd like to give them points for at least using another obscure mythological reference, but I would have to immediately take them away again because this guy looks nothing like a sphinx. There's nothing cat-like about it, and it's got 6 limbs. Worse still, it was named "Golden Golem" in Japanese because like Gold Man/Gold Golem, it also drops a ton of gold on defeat. You wouldn't have any way to know that if you're playing in English though!

You might think that the fact he's yellow would give it away, but the thing is both of these monsters were introduced in the exact same game and DON'T drop a ton of gold when you kill them:

Sure, that's kinda on Toriyama for using the same speckled yellow skin pattern for all of them, but the name "Golden Golem" was clearly picked to help differentiate it and tell the player "Hey, this thing is made of gold!"

These may seem like a couple of minor gripes, but there's a whole bunch of straws in the series being piled on top of a camel with already weak knees. Plus, it speaks to a shortsighted carelessness in how DQ's localization team handles things. I feel like if I were in the same position and a change I made caused something to sound awkward or confusing, I would want to go back and fix that instead of just slapping another, equally awkward name on there and calling it a day. But hey, at the end of the day, the games are still gonna be just as fun, right? Why do I care about any of this? Story time:

When I was growing up, one of my friends was half-Japanese. Every summer, he'd go to japan and visit the other half of his family there, and when he came back he'd have all sorts of manga and candy and video games you could only get in Japan. This was the early 2000's, so at the time this was even cooler than having an uncle who worked at Nintendo. He would show us all sorts of stuff that we had no idea even existed. I specifically remember him showing me Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, which never got a western release, and being blown away by the fact that you got to have humans and monsters in your party at the same time.

As cool as all this was though, it also caused a very specific issue. Since he got most of his games in Japan, most of them were, obviously, in Japanese. This meant that, when it came to pokemon, he knew everything by Japanese names, but my other friends and I only knew the English ones. I remember many occasions where our discussions of pokemon would come to a screeching halt and we'd have to play 20 questions to try and figure out what the hell other person was talking about.

We're 2 decades out now and it's not just a few kids on the playground anymore. The internet makes it easier than ever to connect with people in the same fandom all around the world, and it's kinda ridiculous that DQ fans have to keep a Rosetta Stone of name changes in their head any time they want to communicate or look up something in another fandom's language. I mean look at all the monster names up there! They're already in English! The entire reason DQ exists is because the first game was made as a love letter from Yuji Horii to western RPGs! It seems kinda shitty to me that the west has taken that love letter and scribbled all over it arbitrarily.

One of the things that came up during the twitter thread I mentioned in my last post was just how poorly the west has treated Japanese media in the past.

Yoshi-P recently said in an interview that a lot of Japanese devs don't like the term "JRPG" because it was often used as an insult in the past. And it's not hard to see why they would feel that way. This was a review that X-Play put on TV for fuck's sake.

(as an aside, Baten Kaitos is another one of my favorite series and you should absolutely go play it if for no other reason than sticking it to Adam Sessler.)

Anyways, this mostly covers my gripes about monster names. One other little thing I'll mention is that a lot of the English names are now so wordy and overly-complex that in the most recent DQ game, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, you physically can not give monsters their default name, because it's too many characters to fit in the name field. I think Shakespeare said "Arbitrarily adding additional argot for alliteration's sake is the soul wit," right?

warning - this is kinda long and yes it will be going all over the place, small tw for a vague mention of self-harm

general stuff

even though "ada wong" was initially a pseudonym (something she used actually pre-transition), she pretty much considers it her real name at this point

she's originally from hong kong but spend a fair amount of time in mainland china as well as a few countries in the former soviet union as a teen

speaks several languages besides english but is most fluent in mandarin chinese, cantonese, russian, polish, spanish, french, and japanese

things about her that make me want to scream and cry

she has very specific methods she uses to ground herself in order to keep her composure

tensing every muscle one at a time from her jaw to her feet, and if interrupted it can make her lash out

she pinches herself to force herself to focus

she avoids certain foods that she associates with her life before abandoning her original identity

she also just avoids eating things that she didn't make out of a general paranoia of being poisoned

double or even triple checks that her weapons are on her person as well as their functionality due to a past slip-up

paranoid of wiretaps/people having hidden microphones and obsessively searches people (usually leon) which she often does under the guise of initiating romantic interactions

repeats the same phrase in every language she knows as another way to ground herself and it can again make her lash out if she is interrupted

over time she's trained herself out of showing any emotion which leads to really unhealthy was of emotional release that typically involve indirect forms of self harm

she was really upset by luis' death, as she had grown to see him as a friend and even possibly as a lover, but had to disguise her feelings to avoid showing weakness to krauser and wesker

in fact she very seriously thought about going to desprate measures in order to save luis through the use of one of the virus samples she had collected, but decided against it because she knew how wrong and twisted reanimated human life could be

she's saved leon more times than he or even the audience knows, even on smaller missions, if she learns that leon is out doing government work, she will (directly or indirectly) keep an eye on him to make sure he's okay

no matter how much time has passed, she still can't fully explain why she saved leon the first time in 1998

other tidbits :3

ada was a gymnast from early childhood into her teen years

part of the reason she dresses in a very hyper-feminine (specifically in re2 and re4) was to curb dysphoria, even to the point of being impractical, although overtime she learns how to make the outfits practical (ie; the blade hidden in her heel in damnation)

learned how to play violin, flute, and piano when she was younger but only really remembers how to play piano

she is a very giggly (but emotionally unpredictable)

her ideal date would be either going to a very fancy opera/orchestra performance or a very simple home movie night

she's only genuinely ever really let her guard down around leon and to a slightly lesser degree luis

she's been "romantic" with many people but has only really had a few intimate relationships, those being with wesker, leon, and luis

wesker was absolutely smitten with her for a while and she very much used that to her advantage

YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD JOROGUMO | ATSV AU

alright, let's take it from the top.

my name is chiyoko hisakawa -- doesn't roll off the tongue like the others, i know. but just like everybody else, i was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for the last few years, i've been the one and only spider-woman. or, uh, jorogumo, if you wanna get specific. kinda have to be these days.

background:

in this universe, chiyo's parents died when she was young, so she grows up with her aunt mei, uncle benkichi, and her cousin naoki. she goes through the same experiences as in her main verse -- the aspirations to be like the heroes in her manga, the bullying that kills that dream, and the realization she's quite lonely -- but now with the added canon experiences of spider-man.

during a brief internship at alchemax, chiyo is bitten by a radioactive spider that sends her down a path she doesn't want and initially rejects, going about her life as normal. it isn't until her uncle ben is killed during a home invasion that chiyo begins to accept her new role and puts the work in to wield her powers ( and yeah, she does go on a bit of a vengeful quest for a minute ). she gets herself together, fights a big bad or two, and to her great surprise, she isn't half-bad at this hero thing. there are some close calls, but she always bounces back.

chiyo first encounters other spider-people after someone else's green goblin attacks her, resulting in the death of her almost-girlfriend shiori -- also known as her world's gwen stacy. the spider-people help her neutralize green goblin, and chiyo decides to join their cause after a week or so. throwing herself into something new is a lot easier than grieving.

other info

japanese citizens took to calling chiyo " jorogumo " during the period she acted as a vengeful vigilante; the title refers to a spider yokai from japanese folklore capable of shifting into a woman and who would trap men and eat them. there is another version of the tale in which jorogumo is a goddess who protects people from drowning, and chiyo hopes that's the myth most people associate with her now. for more info on this period of time, head on over here!

chiyo's powers mimic the spitting spider. she can spit webbing that is coated in paralytic venom which can congeal and constrict opponents. think of it as being superglued rather than wrapped up! but she finds the sensation gross and doesn't typically use this.

she can produce webbing from her wrists as well.

prior to gaining powers, chiyo didn't exercise or know how to fight. she went to naoki to learn aikido from him, which ended up suiting her well as it doesn't rely too heavily on strength. i'll elaborate on this in another post most likely!

after learning about canon events and their importance, chiyo suspects that the people who helped her didn't show up in time to save shiori on purpose. though she understands its supposed necessity, this particular protocol that spider-society must follow doesn't sit well with her; she's been tempted more than once to cut ties because of it.

currently, chiyo is a senior in high school, still in charge of her school newspaper's sports column. she has to ask naoki for the rundown on most school sporting events thanks to her other extracurriculars.

it's been several months since shiori's death, but chiyo has yet to forgive herself. when she's visiting spider-society, it's usually to keep herself too busy to think about it.

if it comes up, chiyo is from earth-7878a -- the numbers 7 and 8 are lucky in japan!

she's recently met her mother... the version of her from earth-7878b.

Happy new year, 2023!

It's been a while last post. I have been super busy by moving house. Finally I finished to make workspace and gaming desk, both are I have been wanted long time. I bought Drapas' desk, A1 size and I use for drawing comics. And I put another desk, I will use for digital tools and packing the webshop things.

Gaming PC came to my house too. I have to learn how to use windows OS and gaming with keyboard and mouse. I bought DOOM and Halo on Steam, I wanna play soon!

So, while setting up the gaming desk, 2022 was ended. Happy new year, everybody. I hope your 2023 will be fabulous!

I talk about personal stuff, 2022 was half awesome, half terrible year.

About work, it was totally better than past two years. I drew two of Marvel's Voices. And I also drew two of Spider-hero, one of them was first ever gay spider-hero Web-Weaver, I couldn’t be prouder as a queer artist. Another spider-hero was Spider-Gwen aka Ghost-Spider, this is mini series and I'm going to draw first some months of 2023. And I started the journey of transition. I started to going to GIC from August. It was one of the biggest decision in my life.

Terrible things are… almost related to trans hate/transmisia (I decided to use transmisia instead of transphobia) Especially increasing the number of trans hate post on twitter was awful. I already deleted the account though, the takeover by Elon Musk was happened and I read the news about number of hate and discrimination post were increased actually. (To tell the truth I can't believe friends still using that terrible SNS)(Yea, they are majority and maybe don't care so much) I have tried to get better mental illnesses but this became the trigger my mental condition was getting worse again. That time I drunk alcohol a lot for escape from anxiety, so I was worried about being alcoholism if I keep this bad habit. So I asked doctor and started medication. I haven’t drink any alcohol since 9 September. It was good I could stop alcohol before being worse, but I liked drink Japanese sake after work, so I feel like be took away a part of my usual life…

So, my plans of 2023. Anyways I really, really hope getting better my mental illness.

I'll try to get better my mental illnesses. I'll continue to stop drinking alcohol and have meds.

For years I have often been down by mental illness and having meds, may weight was gained and I'm lacking energy for usual life. I will do workouts regularly.

I will reduce relationship with friends… I need keep distance and time. I hope everyone learn about Trans/nonbinary, neurodiversity, and being kind to other people more. I think I'm OK there are creative teams and fans at least. Being alone is better than being treated like I wasn’t there even though I was there for me.

I wanna draw Star Wars again :P

Top Surgery and starting hormone injections!! I don't know when I can get them though…

I'll get 3 tattoos at least.

2: What scene did you first put down?

First scene I ever visualised and wrote fully in my head was probably the ending, Though I'm not gonna spoil it ;)

3: What’s your favorite line of narration? (LONG RAMBLE INCOMING!!)

"Whatever, The sun was always too bright for her anyways." (CHP12)

I LOVE this line a lot mostly because after everything built up on the previous chapters, This is the line that solidifies [F/N]'s apathy after losing her faith and her hopelessness, Giving up entirely.

The sun has always represented and symbolised goodness and hope. ESPECIALLY IN JAPANESE MYTHOLOGY where the queen of the kami is Amaterasu.

Coupled with the fact that the sun is very important in KNY because its the driving force that kills the demons. In YSIK demons are symbolic of depression (ESPECIALLY KOKU) and [F/N] becoming one would basically be representing her suicide if she ever did become one in the future ( ;) )

[F/N] also grew up in the Sunlight village where all her siblings were killed as children, Giving her a distaste for the sun.

So basically the Sun represents Hope, Faith/Religion, Redemption and Virtue.

[F/N] saying that the sun was too bright for her and turning away to the moon (The celestial body that the demons, The ones that represent depression, love.) Is basically her way of saying nothing matters anymore and her turn away from Inari, Especially after this line comes after her failing suicide attempt.

Its just her way of saying "I'm done, I don't care anymore" and falling further into depression (Which is the water she would currently be drowning in, But that symbolism is not apart of the ask so ill stop here-)

7: Where did the title come from?

"You, Shibou. I, Kokoro"

Shibou is the last part of Kokushibo's name, The main antag. The kanji that its suppose to mean is "Death".

"Kokoro" however comes from the fact that the reader was originally my OC! Though I decided to just turn her into a reader for the fic, Her original name was "Kokoro Fujimori"

Kokoro in japanese means "Heart, Mind, Soul." So the full title is meant to mean in some way: "You, Death. I, Soul." since heart and mind is suppose to be representing Mitsuri and Shinobu, Soul is what is representing reader and thus the meaning of the title :D

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it? (I GET A TEENY WEENY BIT DARK HERE, SO SKIP IF U DONT WANNA HEAR ME TALK ABOUT DEPRESSION/SUICIDE)

This fic is actually based off of me and my own experiences, [F/N] being both a reader insert and a self insert.

I write this fic because I have no other outlet to speak about my deteriorating mental condition due to certain circumstances, It's really special to me.

Everything [F/N] experiences in this fic is taken from me. From being unable to get out of bed to under-eating, Apathy and loss of faith to suicidal thoughts is from muah. She's basically my mouthpiece to talk about the nitty-gritty of depression (though keep in mind, ive never been diagnosed with anything)

11: What do you like best about this fic?

I like the characters and the development ALOT :D! I like the relationships im writing especially with Mitsuri and [F/N] as well as Akaza. The way ive got them down in my head is going really well and I think they compliment each other a lot :>

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

Continuing on with Q8, It helped me out and is a really good outlet. It's also taught me a lot about my writing and how I can improve since this is my first longfic lol!

Ashido Mina

Mina stays absolutely fascinated by you and your culture. The first time she saw you, she instantly wanted to be your friend. Although you were a bit standoffish at first, once you did open up to the pink haired girl, the two of you were seen together all the time.

She’s exceptionally respectful and curious of your culture, and asks you questions about it all the time. Then she goes back to her friends and relays the cool facts she learned from you.

She absolutely melts when you speak in your native tongue, even if it isn't directed to her. The first time she heard it was when you crashed at her place after a bad fallout with a friend, and you were explaining the situation to your mom who wasn’t fluent in English at the time. The way your voice lowered an octave, alongside a hint of raspiness, had her knees weak like SWV.

She’ll ask you to sing to her in your native language, or to whisper sweet things to her to help her fall asleep. She’ll also ask you to teach her a couple of words, more than likely pet names, so that she has something cute and romantic to call you.

She'll definitely wanna recreate some of the traditional paintings that hang in your room. It's one of your first dates, actually, and one of the first instances that you fell for her because of her appreciation for your origins.

Uraraka Ochako

Like Mina, Ochako absolutely adores your origins and is enrapture by stories of your homeland, the ones passed down to you by your parents, your spiritual practices, and most importantly, your food.

One of the factors that played in you two actually getting together was her being introduced to your cooking. It was very different from Japanese food, with bursts of flavors she had never thought were possible. Since you could tell how much she liked your food, you promised that you’d make sure to keep her nice and full with your cooking.

She’s also a very curious one, who asks numerous questions with a lovestruck, doe eyed look on her face. She really finds the ceremonial attire of your culture very interesting. You’ve had to to scold her multiple times for putting on fragile family heirlooms because if not handled properly, they could untie and break.

If you're struggling with your self esteem, Ochako is your biggest supporter. She takes secret pictures of you because you’re so photogenic, and constantly tells you she loves the most niche parts of you, like your nose, your lips, etc. She’s a real help to your confidence.

Jirou Kyoka

Jirou is a musician by heart, and is always on the look for inspiration for new melodies and songs. Therefore its only natural that the way you’d connect is when she hears you playing some music that is reflective of your culture.

She likes to chill at your place a lot, especially since you're playing some kind of music all the time.

Like the previous two, she’s curious about your homeland and why you decided to even come to japan in the first place. However, she’s more likely to slip it in subtly and isn’t as pushy about getting answers. You’ll open up in your own time with her.

Like Mina, Jirou loves your voice when you speak in your native tongue. The first time she heard it, was when she was playing with her acoustic guitar at your place and you started mumbling some words to the melody. She won’t let it show as much, though, cuz she’ll get embarrassed at how easily she folds at your voice.

Your family adores her, even though she’s kind of quiet whenever you’re on the phone with them. Jirou still gets shocked whenever your mom asks about her in english, using a cheeky nickname that's only common in your language. Though your practices and behaviors are foreign to her, Jirou feels right at home with your family.

Langblr Reactivation Challenge

Week 1 - Day 1 (challenge)

Hi everyone! I'm really hoping to really get back into language learning this year and consequently become more active on here by sharing my progress/resources/just making friends :)

My name is Vanessa and I'm 24.

My TLs this year are: Japanese and Dutch. (in this order)

If things go well, or if I need a break from either, I'll probably either jump back into studying Korean for a bit or properly start with Thai, but I want to focus as much as I can on my TLs.

My mother tongue is Romanian, but I am fluent in English (C1 according to the IELTS test i took almost 4 years ago lmao)

I've dabbled in many languages over the years, but probably the only other one worth mentioning besides the ones I already have is German!

I have a lot of hobbies that i get hyperfixated on alternatively for weeks at a time, including but not limited to: knitting, crocheting, experimenting with digital design (i really wanna learn blender this year), coding, cooking, reading, listening to a lot of music!

I've been a K-pop fan for 8 years :")

Why I'm studying Japanese/Goals:

I've been studying Japanese on/off for 8 (!!!!!) years this April, but I've never been able to get my language level past somewhere in between N5 and N4 on a good day

I'm hoping to reach an intermediate-ish by the of the year, so around N3 (textbook-wise ideally want to be done with the Quartet series and move on to Tobira before 2024, but reaching Quartet II by the end of the year would still be amazing!)

My current goal in terms of JLPT is passing N4 this year! (probably in December, though if things are going well I might try for July as well). maybe even N3 in December but im trying to keep things as realistic and manageable as possible

Now onto why I'm studying, I started learning Japanese when I was in high school because I found out about the MEXT undergraduate scholarships and I was hoping to increase my chances of getting selected, by knowing as much Japanese as possible, but by the time I finished high school I had changed my plans and didn't apply

But through that, I fell in love with both the language and the culture and I got into anime (it was backwards for me lmao), and I kept studying whenever I could and I really miss it, since it's always been a lot of fun for me

I'm also maybe sorta kinda considering applying for the mext graduate scholarship this year or next year but don't hold me to it, I'm not 100% on it yet, but it is another big motivator for me

Why I'm studying Dutch/Goals

this will be a lot shorter as I don't have that many feelings in regard to the dutch language

My reason for studying Dutch is mostly functional, as I'm enrolled in a Dutch university and I live there for most of the year (I'm also starting an internship at a Dutch company this year, and though the staff is international, knowing Dutch would still be helpful) and knowing Dutch at a higher level will simply make my day-to-day life a lot easier and I would have less awkward interactions that start with "Sorry, do you speak English?" 🙃

My goal is to get around B2? maybe B1 would be more realistic? I'm honestly not sure, I haven't decided yet exactly what my textbooks/resources are going to be, as my studying has been kinda sporadic, but I have been keeping a 63-day Duolingo Dutch streak! I also have a Dutch conversation partner with whom I have ~1h Dutch conversation calls twice a month, and those have been quite helpful as well

and i guess my ultimate goal is to simply be able to get around with using mostly (if not only) speaking Dutch when I'm out and about

Dead Doesn't Mean Gone is nowhere near Casey being introduced, but i'm really excited about him so thought I'd just dump all my headcannons for him so far here

His mum's mexican, not sure about his dad.

Lives with his grandma and little sister - this version of Arnold Jones is, unfortunately, a complete asshole, so when Casey was about 13 and Robyn 7 their grandma got custody.

He actually met Raph before he lived with his grandma. They both play hockey, so played for different teams. At first they were mostly rivals, but it quickly developed into friendship.

Casey doesn't really talk about his dad to Raph and there's a lot of reasons why. At the time Casey was very much like "he's my dad and he loves me, if I tell anyone they'll completely misunderstand the situation." Like he's protective of his loved ones, and felt he had to defend his dad, even if his dad's actions were awful. Plus he knows that Raph lives in a children's home, so he felt awkward talking about Arnold (Raph doesn't actually mind when people talk about their dads).

After Casey moves, Raph knows that something happened with his dad, but Casey won't talk about it. Raph's grown up around a lot of different kids, so he knows there's a lot of potential reasons Casey and Robyn are living with their grandma now, so he decides to wait for Casey to tell him and just be supportive in the meantime.

Casey is afraid of rats - there was a bad experience with them in his childhood.

Raph mentions Splinter to Casey but doesn't go into much detail. Casey just knows that Raph and his brothers have an adoptive dad who can't legally adopt them, most likely due to an unknown illness.

Unknown to Casey, he has met Splinter already. Unfortunately, it was during the time of night Splinter isn't himself. This did not help his fear of rats at all. (Splinter didn't hurt him, just scared him pretty badly.)

Screamed bloody murder the first time he met Splinter properly. Was then super confused cause "Raph, this is your dad!? He's a gaint talking rat!","Technically he's a rat demon", "Not helping Donnie!"

Does warm up to Splinter. Eventually Casey does end up seeing Splinter as a father figure, but due to *gestures at Arnold* doesn't feel comfortable calling him dad so instead it's either Splinter or Tio.

Has a lot of confusing feelings about his gender that he was not ready to get into after moving (This Casey is genderfluid). Starts figuring stuff out when he's roughly 15 and comes out not long after.

The fam are all very supportive! (Most of them are LGBTQ+)

Makes her own skates.

Splinter sees them and asks if Casey wants to learn metal forging.

(If you listen very closely, you can hear Leo's blood pressure rising.)

Donnie and Casey bond over making things in the garage. The earn some money by fixing people's cars and stuff after school/on weekends. When Donnie goes to university, Casey keeps at it and opens her own mechanic's shop.

Skateboards with Mikey and watches horror movies with him. Sometimes they'll watch horror anime together.

Casey at Leo "Aren't you tired of being nice. Don't you ever just wanna go apeshit?" Also sometimes they'll talk about what it's like being the oldest sibling and having to borderline raise yourself and them.

Not sure yet if she learns ninjutsu officially, but she does pick up a lot of stuff from the brothers and April. She knows how to box.

Watches anime and got into Japanese punk and metal bands.

Finds the forest deer unsettling as all hell. Does not get why Mikey is so fond of it.

Once tried to summon a demon with April (Girls Night!) and laughed so hard she couldn't breath when the ritual spat Splinter out (Splinter yelped). April was swinging between excited that it worked and wanting to know why it dragged Splinter in, meanwhile Casey is curled up in the corner wheeze-laughing

I woke up the next morning, groaning. I didn’t get to sleep last night because I thought it would be smart to try and start the letter. I bet my room is a mess right now. Writing a letter shouldn’t be this nerve wrecking. I slowly got out of bed, and made my way back to my desk. I sat down at the desk and decided to turn some music on.

“Okay I can do this~ they are just a normal person like me…” I mumbled to myself as I picked up my pen.

‘Dear Kazutora,

It’s so nice to finally write you, honestly it has been so nerve wrecking. I have so much balled up paper on my floor, I am gonna have to clean it! Anyway, my name is (Y/N) (L/N)… wait, that’s backwards… sorry still learning japanese. My name is (L/N) (Y/N). I am not really good at talking about myself honestly. So I hope you don’t mind that I ramble a lot in my letters. I do want to learn a lot about you! Also, don’t feel like you have to pretend to be someone you aren’t in these letters. Just be yourself, I wanna know the real you. I won’t judge, and what is said in these letters stays between us. Got it? I hope you are eating healthy, and getting some sleep. Me personally, I did not sleep at all, I was up all night trying to write this letter to you. I got maybe 2 hours of sleep. Not good I know. Now it’s morning and I am still writing, but its going better than it was. What kind of food do you like? What is your hobby? Favorite color? I love (favorite food), I enjoy (hobby), it’s something that keeps me locked away in the house most of the time. My favorite color is (favorite color). I only have a older brother, who takes care of me though between me and you he is a huge dork. We always end up fighting before I end up giving up. He has too much energy. I need him to donate me some honestly, haha. Do you have siblings? Anyway, I really hope to hear from you soon! Who knows maybe me and you will be best friends! I stared at my letter with a smile before nodding my head satisfied. It shows the real me, and that I am not being fake. Now to mail this and to wait until his letter. I quickly put it in the envelope and wrote the address before putting it on top of my mailbox for the mailman. I sighed softly before getting ready for the day. I had nothing planned to much, besides staying indoors. I never really had too many friends, so I wasn’t ever invited to other places unless Jessica needed me in regards to the club.

I got into the shower, before throwing on a pair of sweat pants and hoodie before getting me some food in my system. I saw a note on the fridge and noticed my brother left for work. Typical. I grabbed me a bowl of cereal before going back onto the couch, and turned on the T.V.
