You let your phone drop to the bathroom counter, blinking slowly, unable to fathom the conversation that had just taken place. Had he really just said those things? Scrolling through the texts confirmed that yes, he had indeed. The bastard.
Charles had always been the jealous type. But attacking you like that when he had been the one to… It was absolutely ridiculous. Apparently he still couldn’t—or wouldn’t—grasp the depths of how much he had actually hurt you.
You’d loved him with all of your heart. Until he had ripped it out and hurled it to the floor, letting it shatter into a million tiny pieces. Yet, even then, you would’ve forgiven him. If only he’d apologised. If only he’d shown true remorse. But he hadn’t. And so you’d been forced to walk the path of mending your own heart, and move on with your life.
Perhaps a small part of you had hoped that he could be happy for you. That somehow, even after everything, you would be able to greet each other normally—that you could coexist peacefully. But as his texts just now had demonstrated, that wasn’t going to happen. Not right now. And definitely not next week in Texas. You sighed. It would’ve been too good to be true, anyway. Especially considering who you were currently seeing…
A light knock sounded at the door, startling you out of those thoughts.
“Are you almost ready to go, darling?” a male voice asked, soft.
Right. Dinner. Celebrations.
You had been in the midst of applying the finishing touches to your makeup and outfit before Charles had interrupted, quite literally shocking you to the core when his name had appeared on your lock screen. He’d been the last person you’d expected to hear from today.
You swallowed the bitter taste that Charles’ texts had managed to leave behind. He wasn’t worth it, you repeated to yourself. You weren’t going to let his shenanigans ruin a perfect night—a perfect date. You ran a hand through your hair and readjusted the necklace around your neck when the bathroom door creaked open behind you.
Looking up, your eyes met your handsome, new boyfriend’s through the mirror. He was smiling, eyebrows raised in silent question, ever patient as he waited for you to finish up. You felt your pulse quicken at the sight of him, dressed to perfection in a dark suit, hair neatly tousled.
As always, his presence was able to reassure you within the blink of an eye, the tense muscles in your neck and shoulders relaxing as you gladly let all of your complex emotions fall away.
“Yes,” you nodded, a genuine smile spreading across your lips. “I’m ready.”

but who is she with? well, there’s a little (and not so subtle) easter egg that refers back to the beginning of part 6 that will confirm certain things… have you spotted it?
thank you everyone for coming along on this ride! it’s been a hell of a lot of fun writing and creating this story 🥰 my apologies to all the y/n x charles shippers out there, but as our songbird said: here’s to the end and new beginnings…

A Practice, For Now ((HanaKou version))
SO back in October of 2022, I goofily remixed my first HanaNene fic, A Practice, For Now (also available on Ao3), to feature Hanako asking Kou to help him practice kissing. It's still HanaNene-coded (and MitsuKou-coded), but instead of Nene asking Hanako for practice because she wants her first kiss before she dies, Hanako is asking Kou for practice because he wants to already know how if he ever ends up kissing Nene. So they stumble through some first kisses. They are so silly and I love them. While I initially just wrote this for my HanaNene server for a bit of fun, even keeping the structure of the opening lines of the original fic and the 8-page length (it's literally just 469 words less than the original lmao), it's been SO long since I posted any of my JSHK writing, and there is not enough HanaKou in the world, so!! I hope you enjoy this silliness!! (Also, obviously this would be before any canon kisses, haha) ================================================
It wasn't the proper setting, the air dusty and still in the abandoned classroom, the dying sunlight streaming in through the window in dust-mote-laden rays, and his nose twitching from the chalk dust as he cleaned the board. It wasn't the right time either, 4PM on a Friday. It most certainly wasn't the right person.
But Hanako, who was loitering around here for reasons Kou couldn't explain, brought up a very unexpected topic nevertheless.
"Hey, kid?" he finally spoke up, hovering helpfully in the background as Kou launched into another coughing fit from clapping the chalkboard erasers together.
"Hm?" Kou responded once he was able to speak again, tossing a glimpse at him over his shoulder. Being a ghost, his lungs already drew in no air and thus he did not have to choke on this chalk dust, the lucky bastard.
"We should kiss."
Kou dropped both erasers and began another spectacular coughing fit, no chalk dust required this time, as he whirled on him. "WHAT?!" He'd turned around so fast he almost fell over, and struggled to steady himself by flinging his hands back to brace on the chalk tray.
The Toilet Troll just looked mildly concerned at Kou's sudden inability to stand or breathe air, raising his eyebrows a little. "Be a little louder, why don't you; I think there are people in the next prefecture over who didn't hear you."
"What the HELL kind of thing is that to say?!" Kou demanded, his knees wobbling.
His ghost friend frowned. "I thought it was a rather clever joke. You were so loud that I was implying that people—"
"NOT THAT," Kou interrupted, flinging a hand out to stop him. "The… what you said before that!" Had he misheard or something?!
"Oh," said Hanako mildly, "when I said we should kiss?"
"What is HAPPENING?!" Kou clutched his head desperately. "Is this some kind of bizarre nightmare?!"
"How rude." Hanako's disapproving frown was even more pronounced now. "It was an earnest suggestion."
No matter how many times Kou blinked his wide eyes at his friend, nothing changed, so he dropped his arms and rested his weight against the chalk tray behind him. The pain of it jabbing into his back kept him grounded. "Okay, seriously, what the hell, Hanako? You know perfectly well that that sounds like an insane suggestion, so unless this is just a really bad joke, you must have a pretty good reason." Kou's best guess was that Hanako was going to somehow trick him into agreeing and then laugh at him.
Hanako didn't look like he was in the mood for laughing, however. He heaved a huge sigh, and sat heavily on one of the desks closest to Kou near the front of the classroom with a fwump. Usually he didn't make much noise when he sat on things, so he must have been either really tired, or really dedicated to being theatrical (it was most often the latter). "Look… my life ended before I got to experience a lot of things. Things I thought I never would experience now that I’m dead. But…" He bit his lip. Kou was pretty sure he wasn't just being theatrical now. "It kind of seems like one thing that I thought was out of reach… might not be?"
"You're going to have to be more specific," Kou pressed him.
The ghost tapped his fingertips together. "There's… someone that I like. And I was thinking I'd like to maybe tell them how I feel.” The fingertip-tapping got faster. “And possibly practice a way of expressing those feelings."
"And… who might you be talking about?" Kou had a pretty good idea, but he wanted to be sure.
The gold eyes he lifted to meet Kou's were pleading, desperate. "Do I really have to say it? You feel the same way about her, don't you?"
Her. As he suspected, this had something to do with Hanako's feelings for Yashiro-senpai. Kou didn't respond, except to clench his fists by his sides. "So… what, you want some experience before you tell her your feelings? With me?"
"With my friend," Hanako emphasized softly, and looked down. "My only other friend. I don't have a lot of allies, you know."
Goddammit. How was he supposed to refuse that outright? "And why should I help you? Doesn't that give you an unfair advantage?" he pointed out, crossing his arms. He tried to keep his voice wary, but to his own ears he already sounded resigned.
"Well, you'd gain experience too, hopefully. Don't tell me you're rolling in romantic expertise?"
Kou grimaced, mouth pulling to one side as he tapped a fingertip on his arm. "I have zero experience, a fact I'm sure you're aware of, or you wouldn't have asked me."
He smiled, equal parts devious and sheepish. "Guilty as charged."
The sigh Kou let out lasted a good five seconds. "You're not joking, are you." It wasn't really a question, but Hanako shook his head anyway. "This is ridiculous. You know that, right?" Hanako nodded, his eyes not moving from him as Kou took a few steps towards him. "I mean, I'm a guy. It's not going to be like kissing her. Aren't you freaked out by it?" Another shake of the head. Kou gulped as Hanako stood up again, ghostly feet touching the floor.
He was shorter than Kou. Kou had known that, but it was especially evident now that they were standing facing each other. "Does it freak you out?" he asked.
"Only because it's you," Kou quipped.
"But… you're okay with it?" His goldenrod eyes wavered a bit.
Kou shrugged. "Only because it's you," he repeated, and bent down. Hanako's eyes fluttered shut just in time for their lips to meet.
It was so cold that it surprised him, and maybe that was why it only lasted a split second. But that had hardly been enough to qualify as experience, so when Hanako pressed back up against his mouth, Kou didn't back away. They stood there like that for a few seconds, neither moving a muscle. Kou could hear his pulse pounding in his ears.
When Hanako pulled away, he glanced unsurely up at the other boy. "Well… what did you think?"
"I'll be honest, dude," said Kou: "It kind of sucked."
Hanako flinched. "Well, you said it yourself: it's not the same as it would be with a girl!" Still, his shoulders slumped. "It was bad, huh…"
It was almost endearing, how seriously he was taking this. But Kou pushed back the slightly sappy feelings of fondness swirling inside him at watching Hanako fidget, his cheeks still dusted pink. "I think it's because we were just kind of standing there," he said with a slight smile. "You're supposed to sort of… tilt your head or whatever, I think. So it doesn't feel as stiff."
"Well look who's suddenly an expert," Hanako huffed, but he looked intrigued at this new information. "If you know what you're supposed to do, why didn't you do it?"
"Pardon me for trying to get over the feeling of smooching a popsicle!" Kou fired back.
Hanako's cheeks went a shade darker. "I can't help that any more than you can help feeling like a furnace!"
"A furnace?" Kou repeated.
"Yeah, a furnace!" Hanako crossed his arms, and the pouting look on his face was what some might describe as cute. "You're so hot that I thought I was going to evaporate into mist!"
They stared at each other for a few seconds.
"I'm hot, huh," Kou said, trying not to burst into laughter.
"I didn't mean it like that and you know it," Hanako grumbled, his whole face red.
Kou was usually the butt of Hanako's jokes, so it was quite gratifying being the one to make Hanako feel like a fool for once. "No, I know what you meant," he said, pretending to puff out his chest and combing his fingers back through his hair in his best male model impression. "I'm a total stud." He was, at least, related to someone people frequently labeled as such.
"I'm going to rip that stupid earring off you," the ghost spat, but there was no real threat behind the words.
"Don't hate me for being beautiful," Kou sighed melodramatically. It was the kind of thing Mitsuba might have said, he thought with a fair bit of amusement.
"It's time to shut up now," said Hanako, yanking Kou down by his tie to kiss him again.
Hanako was, at the very least, a quick learner, because this time he tilted his head as instructed, their lips molding together easily. Kou responded as well as he could, moving his mouth in counterpoint. The other boy's lips were soft, and the temperature difference was not exactly unpleasant once he got used to it. Before he even realized it, he found himself swept away in the sensation, allowing himself to be guided by feeling alone. But eventually he needed to breathe, and so he put his hands on Hanako's shoulders to push him back.
The ghost must have misunderstood the intention, however, because he took the increased contact as encouragement, pressing against him more insistently and forcing Kou to take a surprised breath in through his nose instead. Hanako was kissing him like he had something to prove now, having let go of his tie to grasp his shirt with both fists as if to prevent Kou's escape.
Kou wasn't trying to escape, though. His grip on Hanako's shoulders, which had started as an attempt to push him away, now drew him a little closer. His lips responded to Hanako's every move, trying to slow him down where he was too forceful and coax a reaction whenever he stilled. Where had all this sudden effort come from? Kou's knees felt a bit weak, which was stupid because he was kissing Hanako, and it wasn't like there should be any actual feelings involved here, and oh my god he was kissing Hanako; what was this situation and why was his head swimming and why did it feel like sparklers in his gut when Hanako accidentally caught a tooth on his lower lip and pulled away to huskily whisper a "sorry" before kissing him again?
Kou muffled a sound into Hanako's mouth and kissed back like he meant it, because he wasn't just going to let this pervy ghost make him feel like some swooning chick—not that he was swooning or anything. Yes, he only nibbled Hanako's lip back out of spite, to show that Hanako couldn't get the better of him. It had nothing to do with wanting to delight over the startled murmur the other boy made, nor with savoring the way he felt Hanako's cold hands tremble as they clutched his shirt.
This was just Kou's first experience with kissing someone, that was all. That was why every place Hanako touched felt simultaneously freezing and burning hot, that was why his knees felt ready to give out, that was why he shuddered and gripped tighter when Hanako pulled Kou's lower lip between his, like he was reluctant to part from him.
When they drew back this time, both of their faces were red, and they gasped for air, staring at each other almost challengingly. The rosy tint of Hanako's cheeks was almost—okay, no, it was completely adorable.
Shit, Kou thought to himself as his heart lurched in his chest, did he maybe have sort of a tiny thing for Hanako?
Whatever; not important right now.
"Does it always… feel like that?" Hanako finally broke the silence. His voice sounded a bit roughened in a way that made the hairs on the back of Kou's neck stand up.
"Like what?" Kou prompted, brain still a bit sluggish and yet swirling with questions.
"Like, you know…" Number Seven of the School Wonders lowered his head, looking like a shy young boy rather than an impressive leader of apparitions as his large eyes flicked up towards Kou’s. "…Good?"
Some part of Kou preened at the praise, implicit though it was. "We've already established that I have zero experience, so I couldn't tell you."
"Ah," Hanako replied with a nod, "that's true."
"But…" The hesitance had crept into Kou's voice too now as he stuck his hands in his pockets. "I didn't… hate it."
Hanako's face lit up, and Kou's heart skipped a beat. Oh no. Kou hadn't been aware of how bad his soft spot was for this little jerk. "So it wasn't as bad that time?"
Kou stifled an uncomfortable laugh. That was putting things mildly. "Nah, it was, um…" He cleared his throat, and ran a hand through his messy blonde hair. "Definitely not as bad."
The other boy grinned a mile wide. "Aww, I love you too, kiddo," the menace teased with a wink.
"I take it back," Kou decided. "I hated it, and I hate you."
"I know you don't mean it, but hearing you say it kind of hurts anyway." Hanako was pouting again. "If I tried kissing you again, would you hate me less, or more?”
"You're really pushing it," Kou groused as he rolled his eyes. "Don't you think you've gotten enough practice?"
The other boy didn't look confident, pressing his fingertips together and glancing up at Kou hesitantly. "I don't know… do you think she'd punch me if I kissed her at this, er, skill level?"
"I don't think she'd punch you," Kou said, crossing his arms thoughtfully, "but if you made her cry, I would definitely punch you."
Hanako's expression clouded over, his eyes darkening and his brows drawing together. "It's selfish to feel this way, I know. I mean, you're actually alive. She'll remember you when she leaves this place. You…" He hung his head. "…actually have a chance with her."
Kou smiled, a little bittersweetly. "There was a time that I would have loved to date Senpai. She's really cute, and totally my type." He scooped up Raiteijou, which had been leaning against the wall in the corner, wrapped up and disguised as an umbrella, before facing Hanako again. He felt more secure with the staff in his hands. "But the more I spent time around you guys," he continued, "the more I realized that I have more fun as her friend." Plus there was the fact that his senpai was completely obviously head-over-heels in love with the ghost in front of him, but he wasn’t going to give Hanako the satisfaction of admitting that.
Hanako's eyebrows shot up. "Did you just friendzone Yashiro?"
He brought one shoulder up to his ear in a half-shrug. "I guess?"
"So… you don't have feelings for her?" He sounded incredulous, like he couldn't believe anyone wouldn't love Yashiro Nene.
"Not romantic ones anymore," he clarified. He'd still do just about anything for her as a friend, after all.
Hanako narrowed his eyes. "Why'd you agree to help your former rival, then? Just out of the goodness of your heart?"
He hesitated, his free hand clenching into a fist in his pocket. Pink hair and a smile brighter than the midday sun flashed through his mind like snapshots. "I still might have wanted some practice," he mumbled.
Hanako waggled his eyebrows at him, leaning right into his space. "Don't tell me I'm more your type now?~"
Kou whacked the Porcelain-Throne Poltergeist lightly on the head with Raiteijou. "Go back to your bathroom if you want to talk shit," he grumbled, but his cheeks felt warm.
"It's a good thing I didn't fall for you, since you'd apparently be an abusive boyfriend," Hanako whined, rubbing the spot Kou's wrapped staff had hit. Kou was positive it hadn't actually hurt him. He was just being dramatic.
"I'd never hit anyone I was dating," Kou said with dignity. "You're a special case."
"You think I'm special~" Hanako sang, floating around him obnoxiously. "You liked smooching me~"
Irritation prickled Kou's spine. He wanted to smack him again, but instead he took a deep, grounding breath. He could be mature here. "Like I said, it wasn't bad," he got out through gritted teeth. "Thank you for the experience." He gave a stiff bow before turning on his heel. "If you're done being a pain in the ass, I'll be on my way." He hadn't entirely finished cleaning the classroom, but if Hanako kept being so annoying, Kou couldn't guarantee he'd be able to resist shutting him up (whether with Raiteijou or his own mouth, he was still debating).
"Wait!" Hanako's hand closed around the fabric at his back, and Kou stopped in his tracks. "I, um… I didn't get to say thank you." Curiously, Kou turned around to face him again, raising an eyebrow to prompt him.
The vulnerability in Hanako's face couldn't be anything but genuine, his brows drawn up as he let go of Kou. "I really couldn't have asked anyone else for help about this." He pulled his cap off his head, fidgeting with it as he held it down by his waist. "It… means a lot to me that you didn't just laugh in my face."
Kou wanted to make a joke, like Hanako would have at any other time. Say yeah, well, it was a close thing or can I still laugh now? But looking at this kid—this kid who had died before his first kiss, died before he'd even gotten to Kou's age, this kid who was short and scrawny and suspicious and had a propensity for dirty jokes but had also saved Kou more times than he could count, who had called Kou his only other friend—he couldn't bring himself to make light of things.
"You're really important to Senpai, Hanako," he said, tone heavy with sincerity, and then grabbed Hanako's hat out of his hands. He shoved it back onto the other boy's head and pulled it low over his eyes, ignoring Hanako's squawk of alarm and laying one more kiss on the hat's brim. "…But you're important to me, too. Don't forget that."
Hanako's hands sprang up to push his cap back into its rightful place, and Kou was satisfied to see that his whole face was glowing red. He looked absolutely stunned, his mouth hanging open and his hair in disarray as he fumbled for words. "I, what's—what's with that, all of a sudden?" he finally sputtered. "Getting all sentimental on me like that…!"
"You started it," Kou retaliated, sticking out his tongue.
Wow, Hanako actually looked more flustered than Kou had been banking on. Either Hanako had some slight feelings buried there too that were going to remain unaddressed, or Kou was way cooler than anyone ever admitted.
(Or Hanako was just easy to fluster. It was probably that, but Kou's ego wanted it to be more than that.)
"You're not going to tell anyone about this, are you?" Hanako said next, still straightening his hat and looking out of sorts as he cleared his throat.
"Psh. Like I'd want to tell anyone about kissing you," Kou threw over his shoulder, since he was getting ready to leave.
"You say that, but I know you're just dying to gush about my considerable talent." Ah, he'd recovered his swagger that quickly, huh?
"I'm not dying for anything, pal," he shot back with a lopsided grin, shrugging on his uniform jacket, which he’d flung over a desk chair.
They shared a look, and Kou felt certain that there was understanding between them when Hanako grinned back.
"See you tomorrow, Kou."
It was perhaps the first time Hanako had actually said his name, and the sound of it was like a flicker of candle flame in his chest, making his smile widen even further.
There was a lot of stuff for Kou to figure out. Maybe he had a bit of experience now, but still not much confidence to make any moves to resolve his entanglement with a certain other supernatural. Maybe he'd never get any kind of satisfying happy ending even if he did gain some confidence. Maybe he'd essentially given away his first kisses to someone he had no intention of pursuing (tiny embers of something burning in his chest notwithstanding). Maybe didn't have much of an idea of where to go from here.
But that was okay.
"Good night, Hanako," he replied, pushing open the door to the classroom.
For now, this was fine.

Thanks for letting me revisit this old thing!! If y'all like it, I'll put it up on Ao3 as well, LOL. 💖

Paying Back Goodness- Vampire!Miguel x F!Reader
Was this supposed to be just another vampire!Miguel fic during October? Yes.
Is it definitely almost December instead? Also yes.
I need practice writing smut with this man for my other fic, so I'm definitely going to pretend that this came out before that other story lol
cw: modern au, black fem reader, smut, mdni, praise kink, biting (duh), pet names, pussy-drunk Miguel (our favorite munch)
For the life of you, all you wanted to do was rest. Literally. Life was wearing you out, but when a hot stranger needs your help, things somehow get more interesting.
You wanted to get home as soon as possible. You spent the entire day running around for your boss to make sure he didn't miss meetings or forget to send important documents. You didn't see yourself being a secretary, but you took a break from your main career, and this job found you with good benefits and some relief. However, being the workaholic you are, you were just as committed and driven in this job that was only supposed to be a year. Now, it had been two and a half.
It was fine at first. Your first boss was a gentle, sweet old man, but he was replaced a cocky asshole once he retired. You knew that the company was wealthy which meant things needed to be in order, but your boss could totally be tyrant.
You groaned as you turned on your car which beamed with a light stating you needed to get gas. You rested your head on the steering wheel and cursed past-you for being lazy that morning. It didn't matter though. It was Friday, and you actually had the weekend off to disassociate from the grind.
You drove to your favorite gas station nearby and decided to go inside for a snack. It was the normal night commuter crowd who quickly came and went like you planned on. You stood near the register thinking about which candy bar to buy when you heard someone clear their throat in your direction. You turned disinterested but ended up surprised by what you saw.
The man towered over you but looked down softly. He had handsome features: board shoulders, strong-looking arms, high cheek bones. His eyes were gentle as well as his hair that waved at certain points. You gulped quietly.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I think I left my wallet. Could I trouble you in getting this drink for me?" he scratched his head awkwardly, but the emotion looked cute on him.
You blinked twice then nodded. "Oh yeah sure, no problem." you placed your items on the counter and were in your thoughts. The man was dressed casually, but you were sure it was nice quality stuff. You mean, the situation happens to the best of people, so there was no reason to judge.
"Thank you so much, hermosa. I hope I can pay you back one day." the man smiled. You told him not to worry about it and went your separate ways. He was parked near your car, and you peeked to see how nice of a vehicle it was. You nearly choked. It looked like something that would be driven by your boss' boss. You turned away quickly as you filled your tank. You could hear the sound of an engine starting before a curse and then a door slamming.
You peered up and met the very shy gaze of the man from earlier. "This is really embarrassing, but I seem to be out of gas too..." he trailed off and barely met your eyes.
You just finished filling up, and you smiled to yourself. "Okay then." you walked over to the man's car and inserted your card.
"I'm so sorry. I was in such a rush to leave, and now I'm here bothering a beautiful lady." the man went on.
You coughed at the compliment but tried to play it off. "I get it, but let's just get you home. No point in being stranded. That would suck." you giggled.
The man nodded before searching for a scrap of paper while the tank filled. He fished for a pen before scribbling quickly. "I owe you one. If you ever need anything, anything, don't be afraid to call me please." You looked at the paper and read the name: Miguel O'Hara. Why was that familiar to you? You pocketed the slip and nodded. After insisted that you would call, you two went you separate ways.
You threw on your pajamas and flopped on your bed ready to rest the night away--promptly forgetting about your small act of kindness.
~~~
You were beat.
In the normal chaos of things, you totally forgot about the upcoming fall masquerade that your company was hosting. Thankfully, the event was handled by the marketing department, but you spent hours searching for a dress and mask to wear. You needed to look presentable. Your boss lectured you on who he needed to impress and how you need to find any and all hot gossip about the important business people. It seemed there were some ambitions he wanted to act on.
You didn't really care.
You stared at the garment bag hanging on the back of your bedroom door. You had a couple of hours before you needed to start getting ready, so you pulled out one of your work binders and flipped through the VIP list. You looked lazily at stuffy professional photos, facts on various business adventures, and quirks in people's personal lives. A couple red tabs highlighted your boss' targets, and you tugged on one randomly.
The page showed the strong intimidating face of one Miguel O'Hara. You nearly chocked on nothing. You knew his name was familiar! You were a bit startled by the photo. He looked so serious and commanding--very much the opposite of when you met him randomly at the gas station. The car made a lot more sense now. The man's pockets were deep. You glossed over to the personal facts. Your eyebrow quirked.
There were several bullet points noting how the man was a bit of a recluse, didn't like meetings before 4pm, preferred working at night, etc. He had been a highly sought after businessman for partnerships and investments, but was notorious for wanting all the details and spotting a swindler miles away.
You snorted to yourself. Your boss was going to have to be on top of his shit if he wanted to get away with anything, and you highly doubted that he was.
You hummed to yourself, looking at all the information. It was interesting to see how one's professional life contradicted with the personal. The gas station incident made a little more sense to you now. You wondered what made the man leave his house in the first place. Must have needed something and his staff was away.
You figured it would be easy to spot him later that night. Your boss would be ready to kiss ass and shake hands, so you didn't think you'd have much interaction to mentally prepare for.
Hopefully it would be an easy night.
~~~
"What did you just say?" Despite the mask covering half of your face, you knew that your disbelief was shining through. You were so tempted to kick your shoes off and high-tail out of the gala hall. Be fucking for real.
Your boss scoffed before pinching the bridge of his nose--as if his request was as simple as bringing him another drink. "Please don't be difficult tonight. I hear that O'Hara has been having a bit of a dry spell. If he seems even a little interested in you, pounce on him. Get into his bed if you need to. I'm sure he's got some important information in his home office."
You stared dumbfounded. "I am not fucking him for you! What the hell!"
An eye roll. "Oh please, I'm sure it'd do you some good. You don't have a boyfriend. Plus, I'll give you a raise. You can-," Thankfully, another VIP target appeared to speak with your boss which gave you an opportunity to slip away.
You didn't necessarily hate parties, but this grand showings of your company's wealth was a bit annoying when you felt you could be better compensated for your performance. You grabbed a glass of champagne and walked around a bit--chatting with some co-workers and seeing what little habits the rich and wealthy had. You weren't above knowing a little chisme, just not going to fuck someone for work.
"These things are always a little stuffy." a friendly voice said in your direction.
You didn't turn to see who it was but chuckled a little. "Yeah, but you gotta let the rich people have their fun. Otherwise, they're gonna start torturing poor people again." you kept your eyes on the crowd. Most people you recognized from their files, but despite your boss' wants, you hadn't seen Miguel O'Hara so far. The party had been going around for awhile. You weren't sure if he was going to show up, but that wasn't too much of your concern.
"Mm, that's quite an interesting thought." there was a brief pause, "Well I don't quite find amusement in people's suffering. But sometimes discipline is required--especially when you keep someone waiting." there was some teasing under there, and your brief tipsiness faded when that voice went a little deeper. You turned to face the stranger and softly gasped. "I thought you would have called me by now, Miss y/n."
Somehow seeing him this time, Miguel's presence felt entirely too large as you faced him. He looked down at you confidently, and there was some of that strong demeanor in his eyes. It reminded you of reading his file from earlier. He was definitely in his element here even if he preferred to be at home. You, on the other hand, were not used to high-end parties and social mingling. That's why you were off to the side watching.
Miguel indulged in seeing you decked out in a gown and a lacy mask. Your face was lightly beat, and lips shone in the light. You weren't going overboard like some of the other women there, but it didn't matter. He planned to seek you out after seeing your name as a point of contact for one of rich bastards here.
You took a moment to get your words together. "Ah well, I've been a bit busy...plus I didn't want to bother you."
Miguel grunted. "Wouldn't have been a bother at all. I'm the one who troubled you."
You waved your hand. "Ah well, it's fine really. A simple act of kindness. It's all good." you mumbled a little. There was an amusement in the man's eyes, and they seemed to glow with how his own masked framed his face. "I'm surprised you recognized me..."
A chuckle. "Of course hermosa, how could I forget such a beautiful face? I-,"
And just your luck for your boss to appear. "Ah there you are! Mr. O'Hara, I see you've met my lovely secretary. I hope she's giving you some good company. I'm-," he went on some rant, and you saw this as a chance to try and dip. You did not want your boss getting the wrong idea that you were going along with his shitty plan to seduce Miguel and search his house for whatever blackmail he assumed existed. It did look as though he was paying attention to your boss, so you quietly took a step away.
Immediately, you felt an arm around your waist-- pulling you closer to Miguel. Your faced warmed up. How did he even notice you move?
"Ah yes, I think we have a meeting coming up together soon. I'm interested in the project you proposed." Miguel interrupted the boring ramble. He leaned by your ear for a moment. "Find me on the third balcony in fifteen minutes." he whispered in your ear before letting you go.
You glanced at him then your boss before nodding. Your boss sent an unsubtle glare your way as you walked off.
...
It took an hour before you found yourself alone on the balcony. You took a seat on the sole bench and glanced up at the night sky. You had watched as crowds of people went out of their way to talk to Miguel. From afar, it seemed as though he had such a charismatic control over people. He leaned into it with powerful handshakes and cocky grins.
You were tempted to go home, but then your eyes met his and he winked. You decided to wait a little longer since the man wanted to talk to you.
You sighed after taking off your mask. You fidgeted with the shawl around your shoulders.
"Your boss is pretty shameless." you turned and watched Miguel approached you.
You chuckled before looking back at the sky. "Oh trust me I know. You wouldn't believe what he's asked me to do."
You felt the man stand close behind you. "Oh probably sending out his secretary to tease me." you quickly turned up at him. Miguel had a knowing grin. He licked his lips. "He's going to have to get more creative than that, but," he paused and took in the curious look in your eyes, "I would be tempted since it's you."
Things felt like they were warming up despite the autumn chill. "Excuse me?"
Miguel took a seat right by you, and the closeness wasn't in your favor. "I was hoping to take you out once you called, but that didn't happen." he huffed. "I had to wait to see you at work event. Not so charming."
You scratched your cheek and messed with the shawl again. "Ah well, you don't have to worry about charming me--people!" you corrected quickly. "People are drawn to you."
"Yeah for my money, but I wouldn't mind getting the attention I want for once." he gently reached out and turned your chin so you could properly look at him. "Gosh you look delicious." he groaned. You gasped as a thumb ran over your bottom lip. "Excuse my forwardness, but your sweetness drew me. I just want a little taste." he leaned in, "may I kiss you?"
"Yes." you quietly let out.
There was a shock that ran through you body feeling his lips against yours. You wanted to melt immediately. Yes, the man was attractive, but it was like something was pulling you just from his closeness and attention. You wanted to be greedy and hoard it. It suddenly wasn't enough to be alone with him outside. You feel something a bit pointy graze the skin of your lips, and you opened your eyes to see streaks of red in the man's eyes. Confusion flashed through you though Miguel looked down at you with a gentle fondness and deep hunger.
He slowly licked around what was definitely a fang as he lifted your hand to his lips, kissing it, then placing it on his cheek. "Mmm, you feel so warm too." his voice vibrated through your skin and its sultry tone kept you aroused and intrigued despite the slow growing concern that things were not what they first seemed. Miguel could see it in your eyes--the curiosity just under that cloud of lust. "Oh nena, you're safe with me." another kiss onto your hand, "I just bite a little."
~~~
You didn't question why Miguel had a suite ready at a hotel nearby. You didn't question how he seemed to know where to touch and what to say. You didn't question what he was despite knowing that those fangs were real and how the pieces about him were coming together.
Miguel planned on being on his best behavior originally. He mentally prepared himself to be in the limelight with people flocking towards him on the pretense of business. He only wanted to speak with you originally about a casual coffee date or to ask you why you were working for a scummy boss. (So he looked into your job and company. Don't sue him) However, things were just so tempting seeing how you easily talked with him, how your dress hugged your body and color scheme lit up your eyes, how he could hear your heartbeat increase and watch the slight twitch of your neck.
He lost that battle to tempation.
So Miguel would take you away from the useless mingling and allow the two of you to indulge in one another.
You gasped as you bounced slightly on the bed and propped yourself up to watch the man. He eyed you almost drunkenly as he pulled at his tie and tossed his cufflinks to ground as if they were worthless. You moaned watching him undress himself all the way to his briefs and felt that hazy sensation when you were pulled to the edge of the bed. A leg was raised, and you bit your lip feeling that sharp grazing sweep over your skin. The skin didn't break, but the possibility excited you especially when the truth was becoming clearer. You saw how his eyes glowed in the dark, and you froze with both arousal and anxiety.
Miguel chuckled as he rubbed his face against your leg--kissing right behind your knee. "Mmm, I don't know how I want to taste you first." he muttered half to himself and you. He edged himself more feeling his teeth on you skin. He could sense your excitement. "It won't hurt, nena; I promise. Just want little bite, please." his sweet begging made you clench around nothing, and of course, he saw it. He reached up and dragged your thin underwear off you. He melted at the sight. "So eager to please me. Just want to be a good meal for a vampire like me? Yeah, I know."
You knew. He knew you did, but the confirmation did things to your body. You heaved for air, and body started to squirm for more. It did was so deliciously appealing to know that this man desired you in more ways than one. You spread your other leg quickly for him and whimpered as the air reached your core. "Please," you started off, "I want it."
Miguel chuckled as his hands ran further up than before, your dress pushing up and gathering by your waist. "You want it?" Miguel teased and mimicked you. "You want what baby? You gotta use your words pretty girl. I know you can do it."
But you weren't sure what exactly. Him to fuck you, yes, but how would it feel if he did those other unspoken things he wanted? If he did more than just bite you but truly indulged in your essence? You didn't want to decide just then; either one would be beyond satisfying for sure. You shook your heard--still squirming and panting for more. "Give me whatever." You yelped feeling a slap against your wet cunt.
"Not the right answer. Be specific, dulce." Miguel went on to slowly run his fingers up and watch the slick coat his fingers. He was starting to lose himself more. You smelled sweet and delicious. He hadn't had the temptation to eat in a long time, but after meeting you, he couldn't shake the feeling. He was fighting so hard to be calm, collected. But you were such putty in his hands. He'd give you anything you wanted too.
"I want you to eat me out, sir." you threw the words together, but they seemed to work since Miguel went straight to work--sucking on your clit. He made himself comfortable wrapping his arms around your thighs; there was no way you'd be able to escape if you really wanted to.
He was messy.
If you weren't so caught up in your own pleasure, you'd think about how he seemed to be doing this for himself. The room sounded wet. You went from gripping the sheets to his hair and thrashing up and down--trying to get even closer to that sinful tongue that moved better than you'd ever experience.
Miguel was definitely pleased with himself and your reactions. Your hands gripped his hair once his fangs ever-so gently pressed on your clit. He was drunk off your scent, your sounds, your essence. He wouldn't have minded spending his night here at all really. He's please to devour you in any shape or form.
"Fuck, I'm gonna come." you breath out.
Miguel enjoyed that confession. He didn't let up at all. He lapped his tongue up and down, sucked on your pearl, teased your entrance. Your body trembled and only babbles were coming out. You were submerged in that intense feeling; you thought nothing could top it really...
But then you felt two pricks. And soon you were drowning deeper.
Miguel drinks from your thick thighs. He couldn't help himself. Your enamored expressions from coming pushed him to have you once again--more towards his nature. You were truly filling his being now. His brain was blanking only having that warm, comforting feeling of safety in ecstasy. Your pleasure became his and vice versa. He was lost in the way you accepted him so easily; he hadn't experienced that before.
The man pulled his teeth out and lapped at the bite deliriously. He rested his head on a thigh and enjoyed watching you come down from that consuming experience.
Your lungs finally seemed like they could get enough air, and you blinked away tears--first staring at the dark ceiling then moving your head down to see those glowing red eyes stare up at you--so much reverence and care. It took you by surprise, but you could only moan. Words still failing you.
"You're so beautiful, reina." It wasn't lost to you how he licked around his pink-tinted fangs. He pushed himself up and kissed his way back up. "So delicious, you have to mine." he was nearly pleading. Another kiss on your neck then lips. His eyes were so eager yet soft. He smiled sweetly at you. "Get some rest. I'll see you in the morning."
~~~
Apparently, eights hours was enough time for your world to be turned upside down. While you dreamed of warmth and care, Miguel seemed to have been working to make life a lot easier for you. Breakfast had been ordered. Clothes delivered. And a plan to buy your company, fire your boss, and get you back into your desired profession easily formulated.
You were none the wiser as grapes were gently placed into your mouth even after you insisted that you were fine enough to feed yourself. Miguel wouldn't be having that.
The man was still gorgeous in the soft lights of the hotel room, and it was hard to maintain eye-contact after the night's...festivities. You darted your eyes again, and Miguel chuckled. You looked back. "What?"
Another smile. "Why can't you look at me? Was it too much?" he almost pouted.
You scratched your cheek and fiddled with your hair. "It was amazing...but in my defense, vampires are not common knowledge." you opened your mouth to be fed without hesitation this time.
"Well, we like to keep things that way." he paused for a moment. "And I was wondering..."
The shyness didn't seem like at him at all. You met his eyes though they seemed nervous. "What is it?"
Miguel looked back at you. "I was hoping I could take you out after all of this...maybe some dinner or something." you laughed. "What's so funny!"
You waved your hand. "Nothing. You just showered me in goodness, and you're the one that's shy about me not wanting to see you? I'd be out of my mind." you leaned over and pecked him on the lips. "Guess good deeds to pay off."
I am a sucker for a vampire!Miguel. I want all the sexy, tempting goodness. Help people folks. You never know were it'll get ya 😉

It took me over a month to get through most of this, but only twenty minutes for the last portion. Writing is weird.

“I’m home,” My call was met with silence that had me sighing slightly. It no doubt meant the ghosts were off doing something else around campus. Similarly, Grim was probably off harassing some students and offering to teach them some of his supposedly grandiose magic spells which may or may not result in excess cleaning for me tomorrow.
But there was little I could do about that, and it was good for Grim to play with the students. It gave him something to do along with some much-needed social interaction.
Even I interacted with students when I passed them in the hallway. I was pretty sure I was one of the most confusing members of the NRC staff by now. The magicless janitor, who knew a bizarre amount about overblots to the point where I sometimes called in to help with lectures.
Never a fun time.
“Welcome home,” I quite literally screamed as Silver calmly spoke from beside me, where he most definitely had not been a mere second ago.
His eyebrows rose slightly, and a flicker of something flashed across his face. Something worryingly akin to amusement as he watched me with total calm that was at odds with my startled state.
“You… Silver, don’t scare me like that!” My hands lowered from where they'd flown up towards my chest when I'd shrieked.
“Sorry,” His apology was delivered in the exact same way he said most things. Utter calm. But something about his relaxed expression and the mostly concealed smile that tugged at his lips that did not speak of apology, and I frowned slightly. Half-confused by the fact that he seemed somehow more relaxed now than he had in life.
Then he’d always seemed laidback but also incredibly focused. Like it took a great deal of effort to keep himself awake, even when he had failed the majority of the time.
Perhaps the bitterness of dying had changed that a little bit, or perhaps I was reading into his expressions a bit too much.
I stepped past him as I made my way into the lounge to sit down for a bit before starting to fix supper. I glanced over my shoulder curiously, only to find Silver following me. Our eyes met, and he looked at me expectantly, but I only shook my head in response.
In truth, I'd only looked back to make sure he really was there. It was almost impossible to tell with ghosts since they made no sound.
I always trusted Amos, Billy, and Carlyle to be somewhere around the house. But Silver was new and evidently enough not something I’d dreamed up all on my own, despite what a good job I’d done convincing myself that was the case.
“You know,” I started as I sat down on the loveseat, “I hadn’t been entirely sure I’d really seen you last night.”
Silver blinked at me in slight surprise before sitting down next to me. And it was odd. Because Amos, Billy, and Carlyle usually glided around in the air, but here was Silver just sitting next to me like he was alive and well.
Save for the fact that the cushions didn’t dip with his weight and there was no sound of his breathing.
But he wasn’t even really see-through. Instead, he looked like he was just right here next to me, alive and well.
He watched me expectantly, and I shrugged. Feeling myself relax just like I always had around him, “I kind of thought that both you and our conversation from last night had been a dream… It just seemed so odd for you to be here instead of being with Lilia, Malleus, or Sebek.”
I looked his way in time to see him nod in an understanding manner, “I did follow them around for a while, and they all seemed to be doing well. I figured it was time for me to move on, but I didn’t know where to go, so I came here.”
He looked my way once more, tilting his head slightly, “It feels right here, and the other ghosts welcomed me. I hadn’t actually expected you to notice my presence since no one else had, but you did. In fact, sometimes it felt like you were looking right at me. Waiting for me to say something to you and make myself known. So I decided to reveal myself to you last night since the others had already told you there was another ghost here anyway.”
I felt myself frown at his explanation, pondering his words until I remembered little things that had been happening around the house.
Like how I would hear something in the hallway ever so often only to turn and not see anything. Or how one of the rocking chairs would be moving on the porch without a breeze and with no one else near it. And even how whenever I had felt lonely, I would suddenly feel as if there was someone with me even though I’d never seen anyone.
I had just passed it off as nothing of great importance; weird things had always happened at Ramshackle dorm. That was why so many students behaved like it was a scary place, even though I was living in it with very few problems now that I’d finally gotten it fully repaired from the state it had been in when I first came to Twisted Wonderland.
“So how long have you been here exactly?” I watched him closely, and he did something I wasn’t sure I’d ever see him do in life. He shrugged.
“Hard to say. Time isn’t really important after you die, so you don’t pay much mind to it,” He tilted his head once more, almost like he was thinking before he looked my way again. “I was here last time Kalim came and visited, though.”
That had been several months ago… He’d certainly been here longer than I would’ve guessed, but I wasn’t actually concerned about that. I trusted Silver to respect my privacy, even in death.
“Why didn’t you go with him when he suggested you go live with him?” Silver’s question startled me, causing me to turn in slight surprise. He looked honestly curious, though, and I supposed that was fair.
I lifted one shoulder in a half-hearted shrug before I began ticking off my reasons on my fingers, “Several reasons. Jamil doesn’t need someone else to take care of, it wouldn’t feel right to just live off of Kalim’s generosity, and I have everything I need here.”
I looked out one of the large windows as I continued, still feeling Silver’s gaze on me, “Despite what everyone thinks, I’m happy here. Ramshackle dorm has become home to me, and I’m not lonely. I’ve got Grim, the rest of the staff, the ghosts…” I trailed off briefly before looking towards Silver once more and smiling, “And I guess I’ve got you now too.”
He blinked at my words before he nodded, almost as if he liked the sounds of that, “Yes, I suppose you do.”
I continued to smile at him, relieved that he hadn’t been a dream at all, even as I felt myself slipping back into the same situation I’d been in all those years ago. Slowly liking Silver a little bit too much, even though so much had changed.
And in some ways, it freaked me out. That all it took was him appearing once more, even as a ghost, for me to fall back in love with him.
Back in the past, I’d fallen for him even before the overblot, but I’d passed it off as a crush. Of course I’d liked Silver. We hadn’t gotten to interact much before everything went down with Malleus, but Silver was always nice and had looked out for me like it was the most natural thing to do.
When the overblot occurred, I’d actually gotten to truly know him, and it hadn’t solved the matter at all. In fact, it had made it worse. But again, I’d told myself  that it was just a crush and was because of the situation we were in. It was so stressful and dangerous; the fact he’d gone to such pains to protect me and make sure I was alright had just made my crush worse. That was all.
But now I didn’t have any such explanations to hide behind. And he wasn’t alive anymore, which made this even more distressing. I was in love with a ghost, and, despite what I’d told myself, I’d never gotten over Silver.
I let my hands twist together in my lap as I looked over at the young man, who was no doubt oblivious to the feelings zipping through me just as fast as the thoughts in my mind were swirling. “Yep, so I’m fine. Not lonely at all.”
He tilted his head as he gazed at me, “So I can stay here?”
I blinked at him, flabbergasted by his words, before leaning forward, my hands pressing down onto the edge of my cushion, “Of course you can! I would never kick you out!”
I didn’t bother mentioning that I hadn’t even realized that had been an option. I didn’t want to give him the wrong impression, even if that were the case.
But as I looked at him, his gaze softened ever so slightly, and that fleeting but condemningly sweet smile of his appeared on his face, “Then I will stay here, with you, until you leave Y/n.”
His voice was soft and gentle as always, and in that moment I realized that while ghostly happenings were always occurring in and around Ramshackle dorm, I may never recover from this one.

how long has it been since we got a duet cover last i remember is all i need are things i like which im realizing is like half a year ago somehow
actually the last one was pretty recent. Dokuzu, covered by Mafuyu/Ena (+ Miku) was released on March 4th. Lagtrain (Kanade/Mizuki + MEIKO) was literally only 4 days before that as well.
It gets progressively worse when you consider other units though:
L/n: Hide & Seek - Ichihona (January 9th)
WxS: Wagamama Hime - Emunene + Miku (October 25th)
VBS: Koi wa Sensou - Anhane + Miku (October 6th)
MMJ: Setsuna Trip - Minoai + Rin (May 15th)
MMJ has received fucking 7 full unit covers since Setsuna Trip. SEVEN.
Definitely has something to do with that whole thing about not prioritising duet balance and whatnot. which explains the MMJ duet drought. RIP Shizuku duets last seen January 3rd 2022. And like, I swear this was something they at least somewhat used to care about, because if you look at the number of duets released 2021+2022 and then the number of duets in 2023+2024 the difference is insane (46 vs currently 15 lol). Partially the 2021/22 number is inflated due to Niigo previously only getting duets, but jeez still. Most units have gotten like 3 duets in the last year. And it wasn't like. even before now. It took until 2022 for kanaena to get a cover and ruikasa hit their 5th and most recent cover before emunene got their third but like overall the duets vs full unit was pretty well balanced. Shaking MMJ like speak to me girls blink twice if you need help.
i didn't want to put this in the tags but here's the so far 15 duets released since 2023 began
Sore ga Anata no Shiawase to Shite mo (Kanaena + Luka)
Pheles (Anhane + Miku Meiko)
Okochama Sensou (Tsukanene + Kagamines)
Taemanaku Aiiro (Akitoya + Kaito)
Setsuna Trip (Minoai + Rin)
Summertime Record (Ichisaki + Luka)
Kokoronashi (Kanamafu + Len)
Tengaku (Ichishiho + Rin)
Koi wa Sensou (Anhane + Miku)
Sukina Koto Dake de Ii Desu (Emurui + Miku)
Wagamama Hime (Emunene + Miku)
Cute na Kanojo (Kanaena + Luka)
Hide and Seek (Ichihona + Miku)
Lagtrain (Kanamizu + Meiko)
Dokuzu (Mafuena + Miku)

More sentimental blabbering about Avenged Sevenfold, because apparently it's easier than working on my last essays, oops...
I've been waiting nearly 7 years for them to release new music, and holy fuck, I would've waited 10 years, the wait was so, absolutely worth it and proof that meaningful things as this are worth waiting for. This album struck a chord in me that I wasn't expecting and it unleashed a ton of feelings and reflections and ultimately it reminded me of how much I love this band, how much they mean to me, and how deeply I hold them in my heart. I know it feels absolutely crazy to say this about a band, but truly, their music hits a very special place in me that I can't explain.
A7X is actually the reason why I joined tumblr in the first place around 2010 (I've been here for an insane amount of time, I know) I joined because when I first listened to them and then became a fan (2008 - 2009) I didn't know ANYONE at all that liked them, and they were my LIFE, they were all I wanted to talk about. I've never cried at the death of a musician like I did with Jimmy, the drummer. So I was desperate to find community, also because I was slowly stepping into the worst time of my life (my teens) and this band was my salvation and comfort through middle school and high school. I could list all the lyrics from all the songs that have spoken to me during very specific memories, and how, through time, I keep discovering new meanings, and the songs change their significance/symbolism for me. Also, it was through A7X that I discovered Oingo Boingo, which, if you know, you know.
They're just, my comfort band, my all-time favorite band, like, if I was in a situation where I could only pick one band to listen to for the rest of my life, it would definitely be them. It's absolutely insane that they've been with me for around 15 years. Their music just hits differently, they're always experimenting and breaking out of their own mold and Synyster Gates is the best guitarist in the WORLD I fucking SWEAR, HE IS A GOD. The way they keep reinventing themselves and expanding through genres while keeping their characteristic sound is just so brilliant.
When they disappeared they had started to slip out of my radar because it had been sooooo damn long. But their timing right now couldn't be more perfect. They literally came when I needed them the most, when the year had become toughest for me and I needed something to give me hope and bring back a little spark and joy. And they absolutely have. Things aren't great in my life. I'm tired and sad all the time, constantly anxious. But this masterpiece of an album? somehow the narrative and the progression of the music echo what I've been through this year, and I swear with each album they always have something to teach me. I feel like this is an album I will forever hold close to my heart precisely because of the timing and what it means. It's hopeful and brutally honest, painful and melancholic at times, but there's this sense throughout the album about life being a neverending cycle and being brave, facing the reality of death. There's this bit in the song '(D)death' towards the end where it sounds like the soundtrack during a battle scene, or where the hero marches bravely through their death, and then 'Life is but a dream...' drips with yearning but a kind of peace and it's just such a touching track. It's a piano composition and it brings me to tears.
Idk where this rant came from, but I'm just still in awe with the album. I can't believe I get to experience it, and it IS truly an immersive experience, I've never ever heard anything like it before. Seriously, EVER. It's just magical. IT'S SUBLIME. I just feel so lucky and happy to get to listen to it and bask in it. Idk what may happen from here to October, this year I've learned that life can change in the blink of an eye. But I hope I make it, because I know that the experience of seeing them live will be amazing, and also extremely gratifying. Because the first time I saw them I didn't have a good time at all because of the people I went with, and also I've grown so much. Last (and only) time I saw them was in 2013!? it's crazy to think about 2013 me. I'm a totally different person and in certain aspects, I'm still exactly the same. I'm still the same crazy ass fangirl for this band I was back then. I just LOVE THIS ALBUM I WANNA SCREAM ABOUT IT.

Tumblr media
Loki’s been torturing you all day between the events of the day. You were one of the bridesmaids for this wedding, and he was a groomsman. It seemed only perfect that the universe would match you up with your one night stand from months ago, didn't it?
“You look gorgeous in the dress,” he’d start during the rehearsal, the two of you walking arm in arm down the aisle in the empty ballroom your friend picked as her venue with you months ago. “Can’t wait to see what it looks like on the floor of my hotel room.”
“Shut up,” you’d hiss back, discreetly nudging his ribs before you parted to your respective sides of the platform you were to be standing on.
There were other comments you really ignored, trying to get this wedding done and over with so you can go home to your cat and recharge your social battery. But during the actual ceremony, it seemed to get worse.
“What if I were to bend you over one of these tables,” he muses once you’re alone at your assigned tables at the reception. “Reckon they’d be mad?”
“Probably,” you reply, crossing a leg over the other under the skirt of your dress as you sip at your vodka soda. “With how my luck has been running, the table would break though.”
“Mm,” Loki hums.
It’s silent between you two for a moment, before he speaks again.
“You know, we could just...leave.”
You turn to look at Loki, in shock and kind of confused as to why he would even offer such a thing. “The reception hasn’t really started yet. She would kill me—”
“Who said we wouldn’t come back? I haven’t told you my plans for the garden.”
Tilting your head, you adjust your sitting position, raising a neatly sculpted brow that has somehow maintained its shape.
“The garden?”
“Yes.” Loki’s smiling evilly now. “The garden. You would leave here first, and I would follow before dragging you to this one little bench that’s secluded but not too far from here—”
“How long have you been thinking about this? Christ,” you huff dramatically, taking a gulp of your drink once more. “You’ve planned too much of this.”
Loki gives you a pointed look, clearing his throat.
“Anyway. Find the bench and have you lay back so I can fuck you until you’re begging to be dripping with my cum for the rest of this shit show. What do you think?”
You blink slowly at him, trying to really process what he’s saying here to you. To be honest, you’re all for it. It sounds like a whole treat you’ll love to experience. And to be fair, he did show you a great time during your night together months ago.
Finally, you take a deep breath and place your glass down. Loki’s face is looking more hopeful than anything, and you try to keep your excitement down as you come to terms with your choice.
“Alright.”

idk if you still do au ideas but what if delores was a real person in the apocalypse? how it woul dbe done i have no idea but i love all your aus and thought it would be cool
okay okay I don't tend to go for real!Dolores aus admittedly because I find her much more compelling as what she is: a reflection of five himself and a symptom of his crushing loneliness
but i started thinking about it and you know what?? i think five deserves a little socialization, as a treat
so say like, 0.5% of the population is resistant to abilities. Allison would really struggle to rumor them, Five wouldn't be able to jump with them, and, most importantly, whatever the fuck Vanya's ability does has like, reduced damage or something
and the og apocalypse isn't the moon apocalypse, so let's say that it was pure waves of Vanya's powers that fucked over the earth
so 0.5% of the population survives the apocalypse. though, let's be honestly, the real number is a lot smaller than that. People who might have survived Vanya's initial power wave (miraculously) did not survive buildings crushing them or survive the car/plane/bus/train/other transportation crashes or survive being left alone when they are too young to reliably look after themselves, or the variety of other problems that come with 99.5% of the population dying at once
So, Five arrives in the apocalypse and is met with ruin and fire and a whole lot of dead people. He finds his siblings, but it doesn't matter. They're dead. He doesn't even recognize them at first, these strange grown-ups who he identifies not by their faces but by the umbrellas on their wrists that match his own
As he realizes the full impact of his situation, he hears a voice that says, very succinctly, "holy shit!"
It's a girl a few years older than Five himself, maybe 15 or 16, and she is very excited to see another survivor.
And here's where I u-turn this au around bc i'm not all that interested in real!Dolores, but I would be down to talk about Five meeting survivors in the apocalypse, because if Dolores is real I don't buy no one else survived.
So Dolores shows up and see a Literal Child crying over the corpses of his family and assumes that Five is a fellow survivor, and she immediately grabs him up. Five is incoherent with grief at this point anyway, so he doesn't even protest when she basically hauls him away from the bodies. She's babbling at him, but he doesn't really hear anything she's saying
And then she takes him to her dad
(Why not, let's have the 1% potentially be a heritable thing)
and her dad, let's call him just some dad name. like Rick. it has been a fucking WEEK for him, okay. he had his daughter with him, his ex-wife is on the other coast for her work, and by some miracle he survived the apocalypse and so did his child, and he's been wracking his brains trying to figure out what the fuck to do next
and then his daughter shows up with a traumatized thirteen-year-old in tow
now rick is a good dude. he's a dad. they get out of five that his name is five ("what the fuck" dolores mouths to him over five's shoulder and rick can't help but agree) and the bodies he found were his siblings ("Dad and Ben and Vanya weren't there though," this child cries desperately and rick feels his own heart clench in response, "They might still be alive!")
"We can look for them." Rick assures his new adopted child, because he is an adult in a fresh apocalypse and this kid has presumably lost everything he's ever known (more than rick even knows at the time)
and they do. They each get wagons and they go out and find supplies and look for other survivors. Five is... surprisingly helpful and also surprisingly docile as he is able to rely on Someone Else to give orders while he attempts to (dissociate) process what the fuck has happened
and here's the thing: Five prides himself on being independent, sort of. He's independent for a child soldier, but he's used to taking orders from a male authority figure and Rick happens to be just that
The first time that Five does something dangerous and Rick yells is a revelation
(Rick isn't sure if he hopes that Five's dad is alive or not, because if they find that man alive then Rick might just kill the jackass himself. Also like, Five is bizarrely knowledgeable out survival skills, like way too knowledgeable about it, which is helpful for them but also very concerning)
they find a newspaper and Five finds the article that mentions his father's recent death ("Huh. Heart attack." Five says, and there is no emotion in his voice)
(Years later, years later, Five and Rick talk. "I don't think I wanted to find him, either." Five admits, softly because Dolores is asleep, "I think I was more scared of finding him alive than I was of finding his body. He would've been so mad at me, I think.")
this newspaper is how Rick and Dolores find out about Five being Number Five, Umbrella Academy Missing Person
"Dude, what the fuck." Dolores says, wide eyes, "You're like, thirty?"
"I'm thirteen." Five says, and then checks the date on the newspaper again, "Also I think I would technically be 29 if I lived through all of it, 'cause it's April and my birthday is in October."
"You... time travelled?" Rick asks, which is honestly the more relevant question, "Can you go back?"
And Five just,,, crumples on himself. Because he tried, he tried really hard. It didn't work. "I'm gonna figure it out. I'm gonna go back, I'm going to save them."
That, Rick thinks, is a lot of weight to put on one person's shoulders, but especially the shoulders of a child.
"Alright." Rick says, because what else can he say after finding out his new child has superpowers and is from like, 2004? "What do you need?"
("Oh my god I have so many memes to teach you." Dolores says later, reverently. Five blinks in confusion and Rick mentally prepares himself for the recitation of so many vines)
And it's easier, somehow. Five sometimes feels like it's a betrayal, but he settles into apocalypse life with an ease that surprises him.
He lets Rick fuss over him and help tie his scarf securely around his head every morning before he sets off on supply runs with Dolores. And they're kids! Five has never had a friend before, and Dolores is funny and smart and she's struggling just as much as he is.
"I don't know if my mom's alive." She says to him, in solidarity when he checks the face of every corpse to see if they're Vanya.
Five is practical in the way only a child soldier can be. He's economical with the room in their wagons, carefully examining what might and what might not be useful.
Dolores, on the other hand, constantly takes up space with what Five sees as useless shit.
"Excuse you," Dolores says, shoving a game of monopoly, the entire discworld series, and a pack of glitter gel pens into her wagon, "These are absolutely vital apocalypse supplies."
She challenges him, plays with him in a way no one ever has. "I bet you I can find more batteries today than you can," She grins at him, "Winner gets to pick dinner first?"
"You're on." Five says, directly before Dolores pulls two packs of 24 AA batteries from behind her back, like a cheat.
Dolores makes him take a ten minute break when they find a playground that has been mostly not-destroyed. They rummage around kids backpacks and mother's handbags for some good loot, too numb to corpses to even be bothered all that badly about the corpses they belong to.
"I'm getting on the swings." Dolores says when Five starts making noises about moving on, "I haven't been on a swingset in ages."
"What's the point?" Five grumps.
"Don't be sour because you can't swing as high as I can!" Dolores laughs, getting higher and higher as the swings creak ominously.
Five grumpily gets into the other swing and grudgingly kicks himself back and forth until Dolores takes pity on him and teaches him how to properly move his legs and body to get higher and higher.
Dolores jumps from the swing seat and lands with a flourish and smile. Five jumps out of his seat and then jumps, warping right in front of Dolores and making her yell and hit at him in outrage. Five smiles the widest he has all week.
This is how Five grows up in the apocalypse, with Dolores teasing him into taking breaks and leaning over his shoulder to look at his math and scandalizing him by stating that she'd only just started on matrices in her own high school math class.
Every night they huddle around Rick while he picks up whatever book Dolores picked out that day because it is a travesty that Five has never read hunger games or whatever, and then they read together because it would be a genuine blood bath if they all took turns. The first time Five accidentally mentioned a spoiler and Dolores genuinely considered murder was the birthday of this tradition
Some days the air is too smoky or there are dust storms or it's just plain too dangerous to go out, and they all stay in. Dolores regales Five with stories about public school, and Five tells them about his siblings.
Then they all cry
"I shouldn't be crying." Five sobs.
"Shut the fuck up," Dolores sobs back, "You literally watched me lose my shit over remembering my shitty eighth grade dance and listened to me sob-sing toxic for like four hours."
"In fairness I also wished you would shut up then."
"Let me hug you or I will start singing songs that I only remember the chorus for again you absolute fucker."
"I could always sing some -"
"No, Rick/Dad."
And Five grows up. Rick shows him how to shave very carefully in front of cracked mirrors. Dolores teases him every time his voice cracks. Rick tells Five in no uncertain terms that he loves and cares for him, and that Reginald was a little bitch. There are a lot of heartfelt conversations around that, honestly. Rick telling Five that he and the siblings deserved better, that they were children and deserved to have a childhood.
And that he has faith in Five. Rick and Dolores both do, they bring him back paper and pens and pencils and chalk and anything Five can use to write equations. They poke around any libraries for books on theoretical mathematics and quantum physics. Rick and Dolores go out scouting for food while Five stays home and can work longer.
They also make him take breaks, make sure that he's looking after himself.
They're a little better off than OG!Five when it comes to food, because some animals survive. Enough that Rick figures out how to hunt. Five is the first one to each bugs, and even though Dolores makes faces they all start eating bugs as well.
"Pretty sure there's loads of cultures that eat bugs." Rick says grudgingly, wondering if he should try stirfry the cockroaches and if that would improve the taste. "There's even, uh, cricket flour or whatever, right?"
"Plus you eat like, five spiders a year when you're asleep." Dolores says cheerfully, just to watch her dad's face scrunch up in displeasure.
"That doesn't sound true, but I don't know enough about spiders to dispute it." Five mutters, and Dolores gives him such a proud look that it makes him roll his eyes.
They're in their thirties when Rick dies. He's out foraging and hunting, and the rubble he's standing on gives way and he ends up with a gash in his leg. He manages to stop the bleeding, but the world is filthy and they don't have any antibiotics.
He gets an infection.
"It's okay." He tells both of his kids, "It's okay. I'm just so glad that you guys have each other, y'hear? I'm so glad."
"It's not okay." Five says, voice thick and choked, "It's not."
"Yeah, well, you're going to figure out how to go back, right? Go back in time and save everyone. Then I'll have never died, right?" Rick smiles, "And even if you don't, I'll be waiting for you on the other side and we'll see each other again anyway."
"I'm going to fix it."
"I know. I have faith in you, Five." Ricks says honestly, and that's more than Reginald ever said.
They sit quietly together while Dolores is out scavenging. They've been taking turns sitting with Rick.
"I won't remember you, in the past, will I?" Rick says rhetorically, but Five answers anyway.
"I don't think so."
Rick hums, "Well, doesn't matter. If you need help in the past, you come to me, y'hear?"
"You won't remember me."
"Doesn't matter. You come find me, and you tell me your crazy story until I believe you, and then I'll help you." Rick says firmly, "You're family. You're my son. Timelines? Don't matter. If you need help, with anything, even if it's just with - with filling out a bowling team or something -"
"I have never been bowling in my life and you know it." Five interrupts, but it makes him laugh just a little bit which was clearly Rick's intention.
"Well who knows what you'll get up to in the past! You'll be able to go bowling, you know. Get to wear those uncomfortable shoes. Hey, you go far enough back maybe you can go to Dolores's tenth birthday party and put me out of my misery."
"Was she bad at bowling?"
"Oh, she was wiping the floor with me. No contest."
"Honestly, that sounds absolutely accurate."
"Shut up, bowling just wasn't my sport. Regardless, the point was that I'm giving you a free pass to come and get me. Because I know you, I know how you think." Rick brings up his hand to tap his finger against Five's forehead, "You get it into your head that you need to go it alone, take it all on your shoulders. I'm telling you that if you do that I'll somehow manifest my memories and come smack you over the head for being stupid, you hear?"
"I'm not dragging you into anything." Five says firmly, "I'll have my siblings."
"Who were also children." Rick points out. "And dragging? Dragging is such a strong word for a volunteer."
"A volunteer who won't remember volunteering." Five shoots back.
Rick just shrugs, and then winces when the movement jolts his bad leg. "Five, I'm going to be honest with you here. And sappy. Can you handle a bit of sappiness for a minute?"
"No."
"Well too bad. Can't leave a dying man, you'd feel too bad. So you're stuck with me. But you listen good, okay? Because you aren't dragging me into anything. Whatever life you have, I want to have a part of that. Because you're my son. Wherever you are, whatever you do, I want to help because you're family. What you'd be doing by leaving me out of it is depriving me of someone I love, depriving me of knowing one of the best kids I've ever known."
"Shut up." Five says, choked.
"Nope, it's sappy time." Rick states, "Maybe asking you to come find me is selfish, but I don't care. No matter what version of me exists, I want to be in your life."
"My life is a walking joke, why would you want any part of that?"
"It has been my privilege to watch you grow up. To help you. To be here for you. Of course I'd want to be there to watch you grow up the rest of the way."
"But -"
"Shut up, just let me tell you that I am so proud of you. You never give up, and your heart is so big. You love so much and so loudly, and it's been the highest honor of my life to be included in your family."
Five pauses for a moment to collect himself before simply saying - "You're the best dad I've ever had."
Rick snorts, "Considering my competition, I'd sure hope so. That bar was so low old Reggie was practically limbo dancing with the devil. Now get over here and give an old man a hug."
They don't bury Rick, when he dies. They don't have time and the ground is too hard and they don't have the heart to move him. Instead the pack everything up and seal him in the shelter they'd lived in.
Dolores pulls out a bottle of ancient nail polish and painstakingly writes Rick's name on the wall with his birth year and an approximate current year. They aren't 100% sure though, since time blends together out in the apocalypse, but it's something.
They continue by themselves. They get older.
Dolores jokingly calls him her husband because the way his face scrunches up makes her cackle. They see other people very occasionally, usually passing through. Usually groups. Dolores and Five get to flex their hosting skills, though more than one group declines their cockroach stirfry.
("It's a family recipe." Five says with amusement in his eyes that usually manages to drown out old grief.)
"Jeeze, that kid couldn't have been older'n twenty-three." Dolores complains, "Makes me feels positively ancient."
"They wouldn't have known any world 'cept for the apocalypse." Five muses, pouring some boiled water into wine glasses because they might be living in the apocalypse but they can be fancy.
"Do you ever think about that?" Dolores asks, turning to him with no judgement, just curiosity. "When you go back, you'll be like, erasing them from existence."
Five shrugs, "Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe this place will just split off into an alternate timeline."
"Maybe none of this is real." Dolores says, amusement coloring her voice. "Maybe you aren't talking to a real person at all. Maybe this is just a symbol of your insanity and cracked mind."
"Dolores, I literally have a scar where you stabbed me. Did I somehow manage to stab myself in the back?"
"Scraped you, I scraped you. By accident."
"So you maintain." Five says haughtily, swirling his water in his wine glass like a pretentious prick.
"I could totally be fake. You don't know my life."
"I know way too much about you, Dolores. Like, way way too much." Five scoffs, because Dolores and him have literally no secrets from one another at this point. Five even knows the truth behind what happened at Janet Scranton's thirteenth birthday party. Like, he said, way too much.
"Maybe you made it up. Maybe that's why you know so much."
"Dolores, I'm going to be honest with you right now." Five presses the tips of his fingers to his chin, "If you were a figment of my imagination, you would be so much better at math."
"Hey!" Dolores squawks indignantly, "I didn't even get to finish high school you pretentious prick!"
"Neither did I!"
"You didn't even go to high school, you brat."
"I'm fifty-two I think I've outgrown 'brat.'"
"Tell that to your attitude." Dolores says haughtily, "You're still younger than me."
"Won't be when I go back in time." Five says cheerfully, completely ignoring Dolores's venomous look.
"That's cheating."
"Sucks to suck." Five says loftily, taking another sip of his water.
Sometimes they talk about The Plan, with capital letters. What Five is going to do when he goes back in time, depending on when he pops out. Is he going to adopt his siblings? What about Reginald?
"You don't think I could kill Reginald?" Five says, holding a hand to his chest in mock offense.
"I think you should let me do it. I'll even give you control of tonight's music if you do."
"What are you doing to do? Bite his ankles? What if you're like, seven or something?"
"All the better to get away with it since I'll be too young to convict or whatever."
"Pretty sure that's not how the law works."
"How would you know? Just for that I'm playing Istanbul on repeat again."
"I don't know why you think that's a threat. That song slaps."
It takes a few more years before Five is close enough that the Commission comes to interfere. Because that's what I think happened - Five was getting too close and they stepped in because they might as well distract the man as much as they can with missions, right?
So the Handler shows up. And she offers Five a job, telling him that they have the ability to travel through time. And Five - hesitates.
"Give me some time?" Five asks, and the Handler graciously gives him 24 hours.
And he and Dolores talk it over, because now that his goal is more in sight than it has ever been and Five is scared.
"What are you waiting for? You have the chance to see your siblings again." Dolores says patiently.
"Yeah," Five says, and what he doesn't say is clear. But I won't see you.
"Five." Dolores says, and she cradles his face between her palms like he is something precious, "I have had so much time with you already. More than I would have ever. We have been so lucky, to have this time. How can I demand more than what we have already been given?"
"When have you ever not demanded the world, Dolores?" Five asks, his own hand coming up to cover Dolores's own.
"We've had decades together, Five. We're getting old. I was always going to lose you, one way or another. Nothing lasts forever."
"I don't want to lose you."
"I know. But if I had to choose a way, if I could decide where our story ends, this would be it. Letting you go, because this way you get to live. You get to see your family again. You get to save the world. I could ask for nothing more than for you to get your happy ending."
Five removes Dolores's hand from his cheek so that he can cradle it between them, "I'm happy here with you. I've never been happier. Isn't that silly? That I was happier in the apocalypse?"
"I bet killing Reggie would make you happy." Dolores laughs rustily.
"One day you're going to see the mysterious disappearance of a famous billionaire in the paper and feel a twinge of satisfaction and now have a clue why." Five laughs as well, shaking his head.
Dolores pats Five's hands, "Five, look at me. We've had our time. And you're going to give me even more of it. More time with my father. More time with my mother. I'll never know it, but you'll have saved me."
"What if this is - what if this is an alternate reality? What if I leave you here alone?"
"Then you'll be saving a 15-year-old girl from the same fate as me. Because as much as I love you, as much as I have loved this time we have had together, this is still an apocalypse. This should never have happened, and if you have a chance to go back and prevent it, then I want you to take that chance with both hands."
"Even if it means leaving you alone?"
Dolores smiles at him, "I'm not going to be alone. Far too many creepy crawlies in the apocalypse for that."
"Shut up, I'm being serious."
"Hmm." Dolores hums consideringly, "Maybe I'll head North, to that new settlement that last group said they'd heard word of. Sure they'd find some use for an old woman who's survived this long in the wilderness."
"You can have my half of the record collection." Five says, pulling her against him into a hug that she easily returns.
"As if I wouldn't have stolen them as soon as you left." She scoffs, but it's a little wet, and Five pretends his own eyes aren't leaking tears.
When The Handler comes back, Dolores gives him another hug. She also slips something into his pocket - some photos. They'd taken it a year into the apocalypse, when Dolores had found an ancient looking polaroid camera and towed it home despite Five's protests about practicality. The photos are worn and faded at the edges, but the smiles on Five's little apocalypse family's faces are undeniable.
"You'll have to see if they magically fade when you change the timeline." Dolores whispers to him with a grin, "Like in the movies."
"Okay." Five whispers back.
"You have the list of movies to watch, right?" Dolores says. Five rolls his eyes and nods because he wrote the list last night into his Vanya-book while Dolores hovered over his shoulder and critiqued his handwriting.
"And you promise to try a proper non-expired twinkie at some point?"
"That I do not promise. I think even looking at one would make me lose my lunch. I have twinkie-trauma."
"Shut up and get going." Dolores says, because the Handler is starting to tap her foot impatiently.
And off Five goes to become an assassin. Though - he's much more gentle this time. He's careful, he doesn't kill children and he usually takes jobs that don't require killing at all. He distracts and manipulates events as much as he can without killing.
He's actually much more well socialized, thanks to Rick and Dolores. Less feral child and more determined man on a mission.
Which is why he's so frustrated when he finally, finally manages to get the equations to work and falls through and falls - directly back into his stupid thirteen-year-old body.
"Shit." Five says, loudly, and revels in the surprised look on his siblings faces.
He strides into the kitchen, and they all follow him like ducklings. They look exactly the way they did when they died.
"Wow this is actually way harder than I thought it would be." Five muses, looking at their dead faces. But as Dolores would say, life is hard but you have to keep on trucking sometimes. "Whatever, what's the date?"
"Five, where have you been?" Diego demands, looking irritated. It makes Five snort in amusement.
"The future. The past. If you want like, an exact list of dates you'll have to hold your horses. I spent like, two weeks in Peru once. No souvenirs though, unfortunately."
They look taken aback, like they didn't expect Five to have quite this much sass. Oops. That is definitely Dolores's influence. Or maybe he was always a little asshole. In fairness, what teenagers aren't tiny assholes? He has an excuse.
"What the fuck does that mean?" Diego's eyebrows are furrowed in anger. It kind of takes Five aback for a second, because he remembers a Diego who stutters when he argued.
"When did you learn the fuck-word?" Five asks, raising an eyebrow before her can help it, "Grace ought to wash your mouth out with soap."
Diego immediately goes red, "Shut up!"
"Wow you're so easy to rile up. Aren't you like, twenty-something? Actually, I could figure out for myself how old you are if you gave me the date."
"I'm twenty-nine." Diego growls, like that was the point.
"Haunting!" Five says cheerfully, because that means there is way less time than he would like, narrowing his time down to a six month window.
It's extremely funny how his cheer makes all of them make faces.
It's Klaus who leans forward, "Why do you need to know?"
Klaus's face is open and curious and - (looks exactly like he did when Five found him all those years ago) - and Five can't help but answer him. "The world end on April 1st, 2019. No it isn't an April Fools joke, yes I have heard that joke like a million different times. I just want to know how close I landed so I can, you know, start working on how to fix that."
"Woah woah woah, roll it back." Allison says, holding a hand up, "What?"
"The apocalypse occurs on April 1st, 2019." Five says, slowly. "I have traveled from afar to prevent this from happening, because like, everyone dies."
"Everyone?" Vanya says weakly from the side.
She's clearly expecting to be ignored, so Five turns his head to address her directly by wiggling his hand back and forth a little. "Sort of. Like, not too many people survive at all. A handful of the human population, you know."
"But you survived?" Diego recovers admirably, if bitingly.
"Well, no." Five says rolling his eyes, "Wouldn't you just know it, Klaus here has managed to figure out a new ability!"
Everyone turns to look at Klaus, who immediately holds up his hands like he's being arrested or something, "I did not!"
"Wonderful! Now that we've established that I'm alive -"
"Why should we trust a word you say?" Luther says for the first time, looking pensive.
Five blinks, genuinely taken aback. "Because... I'm your brother? Because I can clearly and obviously time travel? Like, yeah, it would have been more convenient if I'd arrived in like, my old-body for proof-purposes, but like. I mean. Thirteen is still a pretty convincing age to be to prove time travel considering if I hadn't, I would be like, almost thirty."
"Roll it back again." Allison says firmly, "What do you mean by 'old body'?"
"Great question!" Five says pointing at Allison and smiling. Everyone looks at him weird again, and Five takes a moment to wonder if they've ever experienced positive reinforcement. Knowing Reginald, probably not. "Wait! Is Reggie alive? Wait, no, answer that in a second. Uh. When I time traveled I fucked up my body I guess, I was like, old. White hair and wrinkles-type old from spending decades in the apocalypse. But I fucked up the calculations and got booted back to my thirteen-year-old body, I guess. How, I have no idea."
"What?" Vanya says, still equally weakly.
"You have no idea how fucked up time travel is." Five whispers conspiratorially to Vanya, loud enough for the whole table to hear, "There are so many ways to die. Or permanently tear a hold in space time. But like, with life as we know if ending soon-ish, I figured I couldn't possibly fuck it up worse than it already was, y'know? Speaking of, anyone have the date again?"
"Wait, what was that about dad?" Luther asks, very focused.
"Oh, you still call him dad? Big oof." Five says automatically, because apparently his verbal filter is shot to hell after living with Dolores. It does make Klaus bark out a too-loud laugh.
"What does that mean?" Luther asks aggressively.
"It means Reginald sucks and doesn't deserve the title of 'dad,' what did you think I meant?" Five asks, and now both Diego and Vanya and both cracking smiles, though Vanya is covering hers with a hand.
"Have some respect for the dead." Luther growls, standing up and looking very large and threatening.
Five sways back, craning his head up, "Woah there big buy, sit down before I injure my poor growing spine looking up at you. Jeeze, did Reggie force feed you steroids or something? I wouldn't put it past him but like, I just want to know he at least went over the side effects of the drug with you. Also like, thanks for narrowing it down. Also terrifying! Seriously though, exact date please because if I have less than 24 hours I am going to break down crying and that is a threat."
"I love this Five." Klaus says reverently.
"March 21st." Vanya offers, finally.
"Wow! Terrifying!" Five says, clapping his hands together, "Hate that. Ten days, huh? Well, who wants to get on board the save-the-world express?"
Klaus immediately flings his hand in the air, Five points at his brother appreciatively. "Yes, excellent! I'll take the volunteer in the lovely skirt as my first team member. Any other volunteers?"
"Danke!" Klaus simpers, grinning widely like this is the vest entertainment he's had in weeks.
"I'm not just going to stand here and listen to you badmouth dad and boss us around." Luther slams his hands on the table.
"Well not with that attitude." Five snarks.
Diego raises his hand, "I would like to join team fuck dad as well."
"We can certainly debate team names later." Five says, nodding wisely as Luther gives some sort of scandalized gasp.
"Honestly, I just want to see where this is going." Klaus confesses.
Five shrugs, because he doesn't really care about the reason. "Don't you want to prove me wrong them? Prove what a well-adjusted young man Reginald Hargreeves raised?"
"Shut up." Luther grinds out, looking a moment away from throwing a punch.
"If this is all true, I have to get home." Allison cuts in, looking concerned, "I have - I have a daughter."
"I mean, if you want to give Claire a world to live in then I'd stick around, but that's just me." Five shrugs.
"You know her name?" Allison asks, obviously taken aback.
Five is almost offended, "Uh, yeah. I have her photo as well. Y'all get on like, a bizarre number of gossip magazine covers did you know that?"
Allison manages to outdo herself in terms of being taken aback once more.
There's a beat of silence, and then Five turns, "Vanya? You in?"
"Me?" Vanya blinks, looking shocked. "What can I do?"
"Yeah, what can she do?" Diego asks, crossing his arms and suddenly looking grumpy.
It baffles Five, who scrunches his nose, "Uh, like, a lot? I assume? I mean. I'm going to be honest here, just looking at y'all right now is a lot. In more ways than one! Hashtag trauma and all that, but like, name a single one of you that wouldn't be the most obvious person in the room as soon as you walked into it. Except Vanya, who somehow manages to look like a well adjusted adult, by some miracle."
"Did you just verbally say the word hashtag?" Allison asks, looking so deeply confused.
"More concerned about the trauma he tacked onto there, but y'know, to each their own." Klaus immediately cuts in.
"You think I'm well-adjusted?" Vanya asks, looking oddly touched.
"I would like to direct your attention to Diego's leather pants-scowl combo and Luther's general aura of daddy-issues." Five says pointedly, "I can practically smell the tragic comic book backstory in this room. If I'd jumped back a decade earlier this would have been Batman's wet dream of orphan selection."
"Alright! Game plan!" Five says, waving Diego's knife in his hand.
Diego's hands immediately go to his weird harness looking thing, "Hey!"
"Give me just one moment to get the tracker out." Five rolls his eyes, "Then I'll give it back, I promise. Also if someone could ask Grace for like, some antibiotics that would be good."
"What?" Allison asks, directly before Five stabs himself and there is suddenly panic at the table.
"Relax!" Five says, allowing Diego to remove the knife from his hands. He doesn't need it anyway and his hand immediately drops down to root in the wound.
"Five what the fuck!" Diego yells, but Five just pulls up bloody fingers and waves the tracker into Diego's stupefied face.
"What the fuck is that, Five?" Allison demands, looking very shaken.
"I literally just said it was a tracker." Five points out, "Now, I think our first team activity should be voting on whether we destroy it or take it out to bumfuck nowhere and ditch it to confuse the Commission."
"What the fuck is the Commission?" Diego barks.
"Man. Maybe I should just hit up Rick." Five muses, "This is going to take so much explaining."
"Who is Rick."
"So much explaining."

nobody knows about this.
nobody knows about his offhand banter and longing gazes. if you and kei go back exactly five months from today, you’d be asking him a question about the research assignment as you were about to leave the library and he surprisingly follows his answer up with “i’m going home too. come with?”
nobody knows him on facetime, staying late until his eyes can barely open after a blink. you’re used to his texts, somehow so much funnier and warmer than everyone seems to know him. and maybe one day he’d kissed you; on the right temple, as you fell asleep on your bed; on the back of your shoulder, when he did it subconsciously during a movie. and maybe you kissed him too; a short peck on the lips when he went home through your front door; another on his calloused and bandaged hands after a block had left it bruised.
nobody knows that now, you’re straddling the boy you’ve known for a while as you suck his tongue until he gets breathless. his hands roam up and down your body, finding themselves under your shirt and holding onto the bare skin of your waist like he can never let go. when he tugs on the hem of your shirt, bunching it up your torso, you let him take it off, the moment away from his lips making you realise his lips are swollen and his glasses have been thrown somewhere on your bed. you freeze for a bit when he spends a little too long staring at your body, and you freeze even more when you realise you’re not wearing the bra you would’ve liked for this occasion, but you’re cut off when he starts nipping on your neck, leaving open-mouthed kisses as he mumbles, “you don’t have to suck in your stomach.”
you relax a little, small whimpers coming out of your mouth as he continues to work on your neck, the little shocks of pleasure filling your senses as hands on bare skin start to feel more familiar than foreign. you could get used to this.
“wait, don’t leave any, uh, marks or hickeys or whatever,” you breathe, “people might see.”
he hums, and yet his grip on you tightens as you think he’s coming back to your lips, but he doesn’t. he just stops there, face inches away as his lips barely ghost yours. he purses his lips for a second, like he’s thinking of something to say, but the microwave makes its strange appearance when it beeps loud enough to make you jump a little in his lap. he still holds you close.
so, so close. and nobody else knows.
“i’ll get the popcorn.” right, because tonight you had planned to watch a movie with him. like the usual - talk, cuddle, whatever.
come to think of it, your relationship with kei sounds weird; feelings so well understood without ever being spoken. you liked it at first, when he told you he liked you on a saturday morning, your reciprocated feelings tasting of warm rice and milky eggs and an unspoken convention that this stayed between you two and you two only. but as the days passed, and the thrill of a secret relationship wore off, you’ve started to wonder how it would feel like to be able to show people that, yes, tsukishima kei is your boyfriend, and yes, you like him very much.
when you take your shirt, he says, “wear my hoodie. it’s cold.”
you grin when you hear that, opting to simply wear his hoodie without a shirt underneath. it’s the same black hoodie he wears literally all the time and probably doesn’t wash regularly (which is gross) but if there’s one thing you learned about these feelings is that you couldn’t care less.
when you pick up the popcorn, kei only lays against the headboard of your bed, feeling slightly empty at the words he’d heard from you. serves him right, he thinks as he picks his glasses back up; this relationship, or whatever it is, isn’t something both of you wanted everyone to know. he’d get sick of all the attention, and there was probably no need for the two of you to share everything. it’s high school anyways, who knows how long it’s going to last.
yet, when you come back into his room, lips soft and hair tousled, holding a bowl of fragrant popcorn, kei finds himself letting go of those thoughts.
you take a seat on the floor against your bed frame, already having set up the laptop in the middle of the floor. you motion to the boy on the bed to come down, and he brings your entire duvet with him.
as he settles next to you, your shoulder touching his upper arm, you set the popcorn in the space where your knee meets his thigh, over the blanket. the movie you two had decided on earlier tonight starts playing, and you feel your head slide into the crook of kei’s neck, like it always does.
the night starts off slow; just the two of you making remarks at the movie, laughing at plot holes and cliches. then, by halfway, the bowl of popcorn is empty; as the protagonist kisses their love interest, you feel a flush up your cheeks; and as the movie ends, kei’s arm is around your waist, pulling you into his side. it’s a pretty shitty movie.
“well, that was a shitty movie.”
“agreed,” you grunt as you stand up to place the bowl of popcorn on your desk, to be taken out at a later time. you fold your laptop onto your desk as well, and kei gets the cue to sprawl your duvet back onto your bed. it’s only nine pm. you climb back in your bed, motioning for him to come with you, too.
slowly, his tall figure holds yours in an embrace filled with something you could only identify as care and affection. and here, especially with his glasses off, sight blurry and only really being able to see you in full focus, it makes you grin at how strikingly different he can be in your room and at school. not that you had ever seen him at school very often, as most of your relationship was crafted of video calls and secret little dates in the night.
you wonder if he’ll grow out of this.
“oh my god, something kind of funny happened today after the english exam,” you chuckle, your head resting comfortably on kei’s chest. he lets out a questioning hum.
“the girls in my class thought i was seeing osawa,” you stifle a laugh, “at me they were like, you’re definitely dating a guy from the basketball club.”
“wait, how’d they know you were dating someone?”
“word got out. they asked for details, and i told them he was in a sports club.”
“they didn’t think about the volleyball club?”
you shake your head, “they did, but they literally went - ‘we know it can’t be kageyama or tsukishima, so, yamaguchi?’” kei snickers at those words, remembering that even the boys in the volleyball club don’t know about you.
“i love how they just glossed over the chances of you with either me or kageyama,” kei tsks, “and who’s osawa?”
you roll your eyes, hearing his voice tinted with a bit of jealousy when he hears other people think you’d go better with this random guy at school. “he’s a guy i partnered up with for biology. why?”
“nothing. just good to know.”
“alright, whatever.” you flip over, your chin now pressing on the backs of your hands on his chest. your grin is wide.
“your hoodie smells like sweat,” kei says, trying to divert the topic away from your eventual accusations of jealousy.
“it’s your hoodie, asshole!” you jokingly exclaim, and he pulls the hood up to your head. you look cute, he thinks, even with his over-worn hoodie and messy hair. it’s in moments like these, when the both of you let go of the fronts you put up at school, and just live like nobody else exists. of course, it will all be over in a few hours, but that’s not to say he doesn’t secretly text you under the desk during class or that you don’t have the liberty of an extra pack of chips in your locker from the early mornings kei has practice.
“okay, but, hoodie aside, you could’ve just said i was your boyfriend.”
you like the sound of it; something so distant yet so close. so you make him repeat it again, “wait, what did you say?”
kei exhales through his mouth, “you could’ve just said i was your boyfriend.”
“would you like a boyfriend badge with that?” you tease.
“shut up. at least it sounds better than you and osawa,” he mumbles, sitting up, leaning on his arms. “not that anyone would ever know about us.”
your arms wrap around your boyfriend’s neck. his eyes stare straight into yours, and though he still feels uneasy at first, he likes the feeling of you so near him, so warm and fluttery in his stomach. it makes you hope, at least, in the way he’s looking at you, that he might want to show you off more than he lets on.
“you know, kei, it wouldn’t hurt for some people to know about us,” you mutter, almost a whisper, and he catches your words perfectly.
“but i hate how everyone shits on couples all the time.”
“no, you just shit on couples all the time.”
he sighs defeatedly, “okay, but everyone’s just gonna be annoying when they know. like they’re shoving their noses into our business.”
“yeah, but-”
“on top of that, my mom would constantly nag me about the details of our relationship. i don’t need everyone knowing so much about us.”
you fall silent, running out of things to say. admittedly, the way he’s so quick to shut down all your reasons is getting to you.
“see? there’s no point in other people knowing.” kei’s hands run under your hoodie to caress your bare skin. he likes the way you shiver slightly from the sudden coolness of his fingers, but it does give you an idea.
“i’ll let you leave marks under my school blouse.”
“as hot as that is, no.”
you groan, slouching against his larger frame. you shift your weight onto him, making him fall back on the bed, and you settle with lying beside him. kei, like the reluctant cuddle bug you’ve found him out to be, immediately wraps an arm around your torso, like every second spent at your house that doesn’t involve his limbs intertwined with yours is a second wasted.
you exhale through your mouth, “kei, i just wanted to be proud.”
his grip tightens.
“like, we don’t have to tell everyone what happens between us every single day, but, god damn, i don’t want to keep sneaking you in like this, or having to send you off at like, four in the morning so nobody knows you were here.”
“do you care more about what other people think than how i feel?” now you’re letting it out. you realise you’re frustrated - so fucking frustrated - that you barely even get to see him every week because of school and clubs, and that you don’t even get to save his contact on your phone under his own name in fear that people might find out. all because nobody knows.
“no, i care about-”
“i want to hold your hand in public, kei. is that too much to ask?”
you take a deep breath, sitting up against the headboard, “my friends think i bail on them all the time. i want to tell them it’s because i’m going to see my boyfriend instead of some lame excuse, kei. and i want to cheer you on at the spring high nationals in january, because you talk to me about volleyball so much and i want to see my boyfriend do what he’s been working so hard for.”
there’s a hanging silence in the air, coupled with the whirring of your heater. you can’t make eye contact with him - what if he gets mad? your fingers fiddle with the string of his hoodie, knotting it and untying the knot. and it’s only then that he sees you, gaze unsure and lips pursed, that he knows what to do.
it’s not so bad, kei thinks. he wouldn’t have to save your number under a name that’s not exactly yours, and he wouldn’t have to always rush to leave because he has “something coming up”. he can walk you to class in the mornings when you arrive after his morning practices, and it’s like he can imagine the way he’ll hold your hand and make sure everyone knows you’re with him. his train of thought might have gone a bit too far, but he can’t deny the thought of wanting to show you off as his. hell, he’s had a crush on you since your second year (though he’ll never tell you or anyone), and now that he’s got the girl, he might as well be proud of it, too.
so he comes up and kisses you. chastely. “okay.”
you give him a flick to his shoulder, earning an ‘ow’ from him. “that’s it? okay?”
“you said i could leave marks as long as it’s gonna be covered by your blouse, right?”
another finger flick, to his forehead this time, “you asshole.” but you smile. you know him.
when you pull his lips to yours, this time, he makes sure to keep you busy with his hands around your body and your hands in his hair, shirts and hoodies being pulled up to eventually be taken off. suddenly, he stops, and it’s only then that you hear something that you’ve only barely heard once before, on a warm saturday morning when it was summer, months away from today’s october.
“i really, really like you, y/n. and i’m not afraid of that.”
as he cradles you in his touch, kisses trailing down your jaw and beginning at your collarbone, you make sure to ask if he’s okay with reusing the same uniform he wore today for tomorrow. his answer slips out easily; yes.
Tumblr media
“is it always this cold in the mornings when you practice?” you tighten the scarf around your neck, shoving your hands into your coat. kei hums in response as you two near the gym.
“to be fair, you could’ve worn tights. doesn’t help when you’re basically half naked in the winter.”
“wearing a skirt does not mean i’m half-naked, kei.” you scoff, but you do take a mental note to start dressing warmer for the coming seasons.
“i’m just saying, the wind can just go up your skirt-”
his sentence is cut short when a louder, higher-pitched voice runs through.
“woah! tsukishima’s with a girl?” you recognise it as one of the kids in class 3-2, hinata shoyo. his orange hair isn’t exactly easy to miss. behind him is the boy you recognise as kageyama tobio, remembering the way kei would sometimes slip in a snarky mention of his name on the nights he’d call you from his training camp in tokyo. you introduce yourself to the two boys.
“why is that such a surprise to you?” kei points out sharply. a number of second and first years pass by the three of you, and they exchange casual good mornings.
“i think i’ve seen you around. are you friends with kana-san?” hinata names one of the girls in your class, and you nod, telling him you’re pretty close to her.
"are you going to be watching us practice?” hinata asks, and as you look frantically between kei and hinata, you tell him, “yeah, is that okay for you guys?” kageyama and hinata nod.
you don’t miss it when kei takes your hand and intertwines your fingers with his. it makes you feel a little warmer in chilly weather. it makes you smile.
“go ask team captain over there,” kei shrugs, cocking his head at yamaguchi, who currently has a content smile on his face.
“so this is your girlfriend!”
you immediately snap your head at kei, as if silently telling him no fair, how come yamaguchi knew all along?! kei shrugs, “he saw me going to your locker one day.”
you roll your eyes before introducing yourself the same way you did to hinata and kageyama, and you hear kageyama huff out, “she looks too nice for you.”
kei scoffs, “well, that’s rich coming from you. maybe you’re forgetting how-”
“alright, tsukki, let’s just go up to the clubroom first.” yamaguchi thankfully cuts in, letting hinata and kageyama go to the gym first.
“oh, y/n-san, you can go to the gym first, too, since we’re going to be changing in the clubroom. we don’t want you to wait outside, after all.” yamaguchi adds, and as you let go of kei’s hand with a reassuring smile, hinata takes it upon himself to make even more conversation with you on the way to the gym. you find his and kageyama’s company entertaining.
“if he’s you’re boyfriend, does he, like, insult you all the time?” kageyama blurts out, his words making you break into smiles.
you giggle, swatting your hands, saying no, no. it makes you realise how different he really is when he isn’t with you.
your hand wanders to the uniform bow around your collar, and you play with the ends of it, the area of your body reminding you of the hickeys you saw littered around your chest and collarbone this morning. when you told kei about it, he only shrugged with the most smug face you’ve ever seen. thank god for collared uniforms.
“so, y/n-san, how’s tsukishima as a boyfriend?” hinata chimes in.
you catch your lip in between your teeth, sucking in a soft inhale. you wonder if you could tell them that he’s the guy that buys you your favourite snacks on the way back from volleyball practice, or that he puts all your favourite songs into his daily playlist so that he can sing along with you when he comes over. still, even after the news about your relationship, you think there’s no harm in keeping some things private. so you exhale.
“he’s an asshole,” you laugh, gleeful, “such an asshole.”

My hot roommate Zach is the perfect man. I think I won the cosmic lottery when we got paired freshman year. “Roommates for life!” he shouted, as he wrapped a tone arm around me in a side-hug. I chuckled, of course. Who knew the cutest guy in our dorm was such a dork. I remember that moment vividly, committed every last detail to memory. In what he likely only barely remembers, I recall to the last detail. I play it back often -even moreso, nowadays: The crisp autumn breeze. The filtered sunlight through amber trees, bathing us both in golden afternoon. The warmth of his touch, and the unintended taunt from his arm pulling me towards him and his jacket ever so slightly wrapping over my back. The slight, dense smell of coffee wafting from him and his minty breath cutting through. Thats how I remember him. Warm. Sincere. Safe. Zach would probably say that was the moment we became best friends. I, on the other-hand, would say that was the exact moment when I fell for him.
We did everything together from then on: Ate together, joined the same clubs, signed up to the same classes- that first year we were inseparable. Best friends to a tee. I’m not even sure what he saw in me- the guy was a hell of a lot more sociable than I was. He could literally find anyone else on campus, yet I had the privilege of being his roommate and friend. I commit that wonderful first year to my life. It is my happiest year to date. I commit that version of Zach to myself as well.
Tumblr media
Trouble started early in our second year. He spent all summer back home, hanging out with his high school friends and his brothers. When we finally met back in our new room, he seemed distant. Still, I made the effort, getting closer and closer to him every day. He’d been sending signals too, I think. A stray touch, just a half second too long. A lingering stare in my direction. A gentle smile when I ask him a bout his day. I had to know for myself with certainty.
So, one terrifying October night, I asked him straight up.The fucker laughed. Cruel, hideous, insensitive laughter. I’d never felt more alone in my life than when he laughed at my confession. That broke something in me. I quickly ran to my bed, crying myself to sleep. Without skipping a beat, Zach left the room to grab a bite to eat, seemingly unchanged by my outright confession. I had never been so humiliated in my life, yet only he would ever know. Still I felt him hold that over me in the weeks to follow like a dark cloud. Of course he’d still offer hangouts. He’d ask for help with some dumb assignment or try to get me to open up by faking some issues about himself. He was mocking me. I felt his sneer, ever-present from behind. Thats when I began researching alternative methods to exact what I needed from him.
Why a private university had a book like this is beyond me. It was a spellbook. A dangerous one, at that. All manner of incantation and processes regarding the human soul. I poured myself the next few weeks on its pages religiously. Translation is a massive pain in the ass but it gets done.
“Love cannot be created by spell,” it stated. Leave it to a fucking book to let me down too. I wiped away stray tears until I caught sight of the last batch of spells. I sighed at its contents. Fine. I couldn’t make him love me through magic, but I could have him the next best way. His body. The final section of this book of spells is, of course, the curses and enchantments required to possess another being.
———
The preparations have been made. It’s another late, awkward night in our room, where he just passes by, gives me a nod and a grimace and then heads to bed. This night would be different. I chant the words. The price is steep. Half of my body’s lifespan for the ability to take someone over in their sleep. That’s the one I settled on. Of course, there were more permanent spells outlined, but this seemed to be a happy medium.
Tumblr media
The magic is dark in nature, and I feel the cloud over me deepen. I feel myself detach. It’s weightless, but grounded. Makes sense, given the purpose of this spell. I watch my target and lick my astral lips. There he was, happily dreaming without a care in the world. I study every curve, like sculpture. He is muscled, but tone. Zach likes to sleep with his shirt off, so I get to see what powerful chest up close. I watch as powerful lungs, drawn in air before gently dispersing it. Perfection. I watch that beautiful face lie still in a satisfied smile. Angelic. This body is power, incarnate. My power, soon.
I follow closes until I am but inches from his face. I stir around him, slightly. I want him to know it’s me. Bleary eyes open and he gives a weak smile when he sees me. “Dude-” the smile quickly fades to shock. “Wait what the fuck...” in sinful glee I push into my man. He involuntarily absorbs my particles, my spirit. He tries to push me away, to get me off him. Hands are useless to stop me. I phase through them with no resistance. His breath quickens as he begins to panic. This only further brings me into him, as he is forced to breath in the only air around him-me.
Then, he starts choking, trying to force the parts of me in him out. I am unfazed. Instead, in I keep filling into him until all of me is inside. This is the way we were meant to be. He pulses and convulses and chokes while I align myself into him. I revel in Zach. In being Zach. Despite all the shit he pulled this year, he still is perfection. My perfection, now.
I command his lips mine. “Invoke me. Become me. Manipulate this body. Explore us. Stay, in me. I want you here, forever.” They’re not words he usually uses. I rile in a frenzy when these phrases leave his lips at my behest. When his voice becomes my own and I make us moan. When his body complies with my every whim. When Zach’s flesh is mine. It is euphoric. Orgasmic even. I intend to follow through, to reward it. To pleasure it. God it feels good being in him. Being him. He may not love me, but love me he will, even if indirectly. Every waking moment I spend inside this man will be a moment of him loving himself, loving me. Now, And then I feel it. I clutch my head in pain. Zach.

Veins strain in his forehead as he puts every last effort to exorcise me out. Resistance almighty in this body. In tears I feel myself stripped from momentary heaven. He chokes as a dense fog that is me escapes his mouth. He is successful.
When I am kicked out of his body abruptly, I flare in anger. How could he do this? How could he? I look back at my slumbering form. No matter. My resolve is steel. Somehow, somewhere deep inside me, I knew somewhere it had to come to this. I chant the final curse mentioned in the spellbook. The price is the steepest of them all.
I watch as my physical form dissipates. I writhe as I am renewed with newfound energy. Potency. Virility. I’ve put in everything. Everything I ever was into becoming him. Zach would be mine, no matter what.
Before he can readjust, before he can even think about what had just occurred, I flood back inside my man. Inside my body. My one true body, now, given what I had to sacrifice. I make him smile while he takes me in. Smile in preparation of a new, permanent driver. I thrust my astral form inside its new home. It’s warm. Roomy. muscular. We make this body grin, shout, cry, writhing all the way in its sheets in our battle for control. I’m not even sure he knows what he’s doing when he fights me- but he always was a natural in everything he picked up. I feel our shared muscle contract and relax as it is forced to accept its two masters- soon to be one. Soon to be me. Zach’s soul was strong but no one was a match for the full force of an entire human body-turned-spirit. I feel his soul start to lose footing. Jackpot. Immediately fill take its place. My place.
Tumblr media
I was far deeper in Zach now than I was before. His essence struggles, trying to escape me but I keep us steady, hold us tight. Our minds begin to connect this time around and we sync. The book said this was a necessary step. I blink away our tears into a satisfied smile. Our face is flush from the fight, flush from my greatest victory. “You’re mine forever,” I think to myself, My words. The verbalization of my invasive thoughts in his head- they’re spoken in his tongue. In his jock-like inflection. I even now think in his voice. Of course, it’s relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. Yet it is undeniable proof. The finality of it all. Proof that my body no longer existed in this world. Proof that for me, forever, Zach would be my default. Just one last step to it all. One last push- I’ve already given this much, there was no going back. I would displace Zach as the true owner of this body. It’s as the final line in the book states: “Encapsulate their soul, devour it, digest it, make it yours. Then, true control at long last.”
Tumblr media
Tears stream down our shared cheeks as we both realize the true gravity, the true consequences of my actions. We are synced now, but I haven’t yet completed the process. So, our emotions are a mix. So, it’s bittersweet. He’s mine. We’re one. I’m finally with Zach in a way most intimate. Despite it all, he isn’t fighting back. Why?
I rage inside him, wanting him to be mad, wanting him to hate me, to give me justification my ultimate transgression. He offers none. Instead, I am hit with borrowed clarity. More of his memory floods into me and I begin to cry.
I watch my every worst moment through his lens, relive the demons of my past and yet, from his perspective they never looked quite as dark or traumatic as I had made them out to be. Even my confession itself, my initial catalyst, had merely been a blip in Zach’s mind. If anything, he had been more concerned that his own nervous laughing was the cause of my spiraling. I quickly realize how much wasted time I spent, building up Zach into this god in my head. My god. In the end, he was human after all.
I feel Zach pull instances of himself from my memories in turn. It turns out he had many, many insecurities as well. Many moments where he needed validation or support. Many moments, even in recent memory, where I had never picked up on on his fear and self doubt. An offhand comment here. Some self-deprecation there. Of course, stupid me always there to respond by telling him to quit joking around. I felt the months of torment he felt in my coldness after my confession. He wasn’t making fun of me or being an ass, he wasn’t even patronizing (well, he wasn‘t trying to at least)- he thought he was losing a friend. The guy was just a bit oblivious. God I was so dumb. Of course, he blames himself for my eventual actions. Poor guy. Zach didn’t deserve any of this- he never did. “Thank you” he cries in new clarity.
In mental tears I begin to undo my connection to him. It’s not something he had the capacity to do himself- I made that a reality when I used my physical form as tribute. I know the price which must be paid, for my greatest sin, born from misunderstanding. There wouldn’t be much left for me- the price for the spell was my physical body after all. It didn’t matter. I made that choice for myself when I recited the spell. But Zach... he had no choice at all. He still had a chance at a life. A life well-lived with knowledge and confidence gained from my memory. It was the least I could give him.
I begin to drift away as I balance the cosmic scales. I detach the last of myself from Zach, ready to give him back his body, ready to return him to his life. It’s merely a reverse of the process from before, yet it all feels lighter somehow. I take it as a sign of karmic justice. Of course, I am scared. Who knows what awaits me? Maybe I can find another body to inhabit. Maybe one in a coma. Maybe i’ll be reincarnated. Maybe nothing. Maybe I’ll just vanish on the spot...
Zach doesn’t give me the chance to find out. I feel his astral hand holding on to mine. His face is sympathetic. Kind. Warm. Like it used to be. Like it always was. His body leans up to pull me into a warm embrace. I start crying in spirit. “You, you don’t have to do this-”
“I know” he says. He pulls me tighter. “Roommates for life, remember?” Now he’s crying. “There’s no way to go back- we both know that, but you still got a life to live-we both do.” He smiles as he guides me to himself. I reattach to him. We weave our souls as one. “C’mon man, I told you I grew up sharing a room.” I am a complete mess of emotions at this point. Unworthiness, Love, Relief. I feel his mess too. Neither of us knew where to go from here, but we both knew we’d face it together.
Tumblr media
The experience was sobering, to say the least. We cried together that night. We cried at newfound realization. We cried at irreversibility of what I had done. Hell, we even cried at the extra rent that had to now be paid. I had no way of undoing what I did, and Zach wouldn’t let me go. In the end, we decide to just give it a go, a resolve to live as one person. “Zach 2.0,” as he jokingly put it. Dork.
———
“A happy accident,” is what Zach called the events of that night. He always was the optimist. Although, these days, I’m a bit of an optimist now too. I am Zach now too, after all. All things considered, we’ve done quite well together. Zach 2.0 was everything. We were smart, intuitive, confident, compassionate. We’ve made this body the healthiest it’s ever been. Hell, together we even graduated with honors, something neither of us could ever hope to do alone. Both our parents were real proud of that one- he told mine at my funeral that we had been together and we’ve been in close contact ever since. By no means were we the perfect man though. There was no perfect man. We’ve had our share of fights, struggles, times where one of us would take full control of this body we share, shut the other out.
Once in a blue moon, we both dream of what our lives could have ended up as, had I not done what I did or had he let me disappear that night. In retrospect, I really do think my life had a lot of things going for it. Hindsight is always 20/20, as he likes to say. I saw many an opening, so many areas for improvement that my younger self was blinded by in lust and perceived betrayal. There was so much life I could have lived, had I just not opened that stupid book. I don’t dwell on it too much though. We’re both quite happy sharing this body. I’m living in one body with my crush, whats not to like?
Tumblr media
The first few months were quite jarring. Our friends and family would see us happy and outgoing at one moment and then flip to quiet and reserved on a flip of the switch. Gratefully, they been patient with us, assuming it was the byproduct of a grieving boyfriend. The more years I grow with him, the more alike we have become. Sharing one body and living one life tends to do that. I’ve probably rubbed off on him a little too. He’s just a bit more analytical now, a bit more perceptive, and I’ve learned to let loose every once in a while. Altogether, we make a great team. We’ve even managed a slew of relationships along the way. Hell, he’s even gone out with some guys-no doubt a byproduct of my soul being a part of him. Of course, in the ultimate cruel twist of fate, they never last- he tells me “none ever match me”. Well of course they can’t. I’ve lived every moment with him, felt his every thought, lifted him when he was up, consoled him when he was down. Ironically, in a roundabout way, the spell did end up causing love, causing for him to fall for me- at the cost of us never being able to be a couple in the physical sense. Guess you really can’t have it all.
In the few years we spent together my love for him has only deepened. I know he feels the same way. We are one person, after all. All things considered, it’s not a bad setup. If love on the physical plane happens, it happens, and if it doesn’t- then we still always have each other. Regardless, I’m sure we’ll find someone out there for the both of us, someday-there’s that optimism again. Of course, we don’t pine for it. Our main focus has always been each other. Growing together. We’ve got a whole life yet to live. And he’ll have me with him every step of the way. And we can’t wait to face it all, together.

-End-
Eh, it’s a bit underdeveloped but I’m not a novelist and I didn’t want to spread this out over parts. Going for something a little different with number 14- hope y’all like it!

PAIRING: schoolnurse! lee taeyong x topstudent! reader
GENRE: fluff, humor, small angst, rivals-to-kinda-lovers!, high school au
WC: 3.9k
NOTES: mentions of injury (concussions um) slight cursing, violence, kinda bullying?
SUMMARY: being one of the top students of your school, you should’ve known getting hit in the head four times would eventually lead to a visit to the school nurse. and maybe you also should’ve known the very nurse was somehow the one person you hated?
ღ
The first time you got hit was an accident. Scratch that- technically all four times you got knocked in the head were an accident, and you were honestly getting worried about the amount of brain cells you were losing.
You will admit that the very first was your fault. You weren’t paying attention in gym, and the volleyball smacks you (rightfully so) in the side of the head. You’re pretty sure you just sadly crumble to the ground in surprise. Well, and a teensy amount of pain.
Who are you kidding- a lot of pain.
A clamor of voices follow, most of them ‘are you okays?’ and ‘shoot, my bad”. Luckily, you’re able to get out mostly unscathed, and the whole thing becomes a faint memory buried in your brain somewhere.
Until you get hit a second time. This couldn’t be a coincidence, right? It happened in the gym, again. Except you were fully paying attention. This time you were just being dumb.
You think since you were one of the top students in the school, you wouldn’t be dumb enough to stand right underneath a basketball hoop. Sadly, you were.
Someone had gotten the ball stuck between the hoop and the board (that one annoying spot), leading to several people attempting to hit the ball out. And you standing underneath the hoop, obtaining and giving other people’s balls back to them and also attempting to get that one stupid basketball unstuck.
Frowning, you look straight up at the hoop. “Doyoung, a little more to the left-“ And then you saw it (and maybe also heard a watch out!). The unmistakable shape of an orange circle. A firm, striped one that was definitely getting closer and closer to your face.
You only get the chance to open your mouth before it thuds off your forehead -you’re pretty sure you hear a firm thunk!- and it bounces off into the distance.
There’s about two seconds of silence before you groan in pain, clutching your head and hearing the oofs and questions. You insist you’re fine, still.(really, though?)
It wasn’t serious enough to get a trip to the nurse, just a sad time-out on the benches.
This time had to be the last. I mean, at least it wasn’t a ball...
But was a metal locker door any better?
It occurred a couple weeks after the last ....incident. Yuta follows you out of the classroom, walking over to where his locker was.
As he puts his books in, you lean back on the lockers next to his, huffing in annoyance. “-I mean, why does he even care about bonus points? It was just two more, anyways!”
Yuta looks at you, unamused. “Why do you even care about him caring?”
“I don’t! It’s just annoying! He’s annoying!” You turn to face him, side now pressing against the locker. And just as you’re about to continue, you hear an angry groan and a locker springing open from behind.
You never hated top lockers more than at that moment.
The door flies open, effectively pounding the back of your head. The impact somehow hard enough to leave the locker door shaking.
The rattling metal echoes through the hall as you grab your head in distraught. Yuta watches you with a shocked expression, and you whip around to see who the culprit was.
You wouldn’t say you were angry, just..... irked.
And behold, an extremely apologetic looking Jungwoo. He explained, “I was just super frustrated and took it out on my locker. I swear I didn’t see you right there!!”
You blamed getting the second-highest test grade in the class on him. At that point, it really seemed like getting hit in the head was affecting you and your perfect grades. But you still refused to go to the nurse, why?  I mean, you could still function properly, so there was no need... right?
If the locker door wasn’t bad enough, the last straw that caused the whole mess was by an elbow. Specifically Johnny’s elbow, you later found out.
He was holding something in his hands, elbows pointing out, you weren’t sure what it was exactly. How funny it was that you forgot how tall Johnny really is. So as you snuck up behind him, he quickly turns his upper body around.
Which meant his sharp elbow came in contact with your head.
It wasn’t even that hard but apparently hard enough to cause you to blackout. (And perhaps the three previous times didn’t quite help either. )
When you finally come about, you see a crowd hovered over you, concerned and some panicking. And that’s how you figured you probably passed out in the middle of the gym.
No lie, you felt horrible. Like someone who just woke up from a hangover. Apparently, you were only out for a couple of seconds, but people still assisted you up, insisting you needed help.
So why were you still surprised to find out you couldn’t name the months of the year in order?
“Y/n-no, October comes after September.”
Huffing, you allow Johnny to drag you to the nurse's office. “Whatever, what does this have to do with concussions, again??”
“You’re literally one of the top two students in the school, and you can’t name the months of the year in order? Spells it right out for me.”
As he opens the door, you both clumsily shuffle in, looking for the nurse.
...ha. That’s funny. Nudging Johnny, you whisper not so loudly. “I know I may have a concussion, but does the nurse kinda look like freakin’ taeyong or- ?”
You feel two pairs of eyes on you. Johnny ignores you, setting you down in a chair. “Hey, Taeyong. Got someone special for you.”
You shoot him an incredulous look. “Lee Taeyong? The school nurse? Pffft. Like he could ever take care of others.”
A voice cuts in. “Johnny, why did you bring them here?” You turn and immediately squint. Is that really him?
It’s like he reads your mind, stating, “Yes, it’s me y/n. Not sure why you’re here, but it explains all your issues I guess.”
Slowly raising a finger to point at him, you narrow your eyes. “I have no issues, thank you very much.”
Standing up, you’re about to walk out when you stumble, and Taeyong catches you.
His sharp eyes glare down at you, causing you to scrunch your face up in disgust. “Let go of me.”
Taeyong rolls his eyes, not so softly placing you onto the chair. “Thanks, Johnny, I’ll take it from here.”
Before he leaves, you plead at him with wide eyes, ones screaming don’t leave me here with this ******.
He grins and leaves anyway, and so you’re forced to be stuck alone in a room with taeyong.
Lee Taeyong, one of the top students of the school and apparently the school nurse too? Was he even qualified??? The top student next to you, that is. It was always the two of you competing. To be number one. Always comparing grades and test scores.
It was strange, at first. When you met him, you actually liked him. I mean, with his good looks and seeming perfect personality and all. Then people started to notice you and your high grades, comparing it with his.
You didn’t really care about it, but apparently, Taeyong did. That started the bickers, then the arguments and resentment.
And it led to what you two were now. Rivals competing for the top spot.
“-I’m guessing you hit your head??”
You blink. “Eh?”
“Huh, is it that bad?” he mutters. “Does your head hurt?”
You shrug. “Well, Johnny said I probably have a concussion but I feel okay?” What a lie.
“Well then why are you here?” he deadpans.
You roll your eyes. “Can you just like, do your job and not talk back for once? Just make sure I’m okay or whatever..”
He sighs, moving to stand in front of you. You furrow your eyebrows. “What are you doing?” Taeyong doesn’t say anything, instead suddenly grabbing your face with his hands. His hands were surprisingly warm, touch soft.
Panicking, you attempt to remove his hands, but his glare forces you to freeze. “Stop moving.”
Then he pulls out a black object.  Oh, it’s a.... flashlight? “Don’t look straight into it,” he says quietly.
The bright light blinds you at first, but after adjusting, your eyes focus on the only thing in your field of vision.  Him.
And for some reason, you take to chance to just... look at taeyong. His eyes are a deep, warm brown, focused on your face and much different from the usual dirty looks he would send your way.
Of course, he was extremely handsome, but you would never say or admit that. You felt.... warm, the way his face was so close to yours-closer than it had ever been. there were no insults, just you and him.
The light abruptly turns off with a click. And for some reason, you don’t move. Taeyong doesn’t either. His eyes make contact with yours. It was weird how the first thought that came into your head was that his eyes were really pretty. Too pretty.
He blinks. “I think you should be okay, just get some rest for the next couple of days or whatever. Don’t strain yourself too much. And no gym for the rest of the week either.”
You slowly nod, making your way out of technically his office. After getting a considerable distance away, you take a moment to just think. It was different. He was different. Different from the usual snarky remarks and gloating. Nurse Taeyong, you almost laugh.
Immediately straightening up, you squeeze your eyes shut.
Tch. What were you thinking? You still couldn’t believe taeyong was the actual school nurse. Seriously, an annoying student like him? The school couldn’t even get a real one? And not to mention his fangirls. They probably came to visit him every day, taking over the whole place.
You felt jealous. The fact that he took care of students every day and still was able to maintain his amazing grades. But even worse, you also felt admiration. Or at least you thought so, a tiny feeling blooming in your stomach.
The topic of him comes up again one day at lunch. You were sitting at lunch with Ten and Yuta when the thought pops into your head.
“Hey, did you guys know that taeyong was the school nurse?”
They both nod. You scoff. “Am I the only one who didn’t know?” Ten shoots you a look. “Maybe if you weren’t too busy flirting with him you would know.”
“I do not! He’s the one who likes to constantly compare our grades, and I just can’t let him win.” Yuta joins in. “Seriously y/n, you talk about him a lot. No matter if you say you hate him, it’s like you two are obsessed with each other.”
Shaking your head, you say, “No... I won’t ever like lee taeyong.” You miss the look Yuta and Ten share.
You got detention. With said person. Maybe it was your fault. Or maybe it was his.
I mean, if you were called up to solve a problem and he kept making dumb remarks while you were writing, was it that unreasonable of you to call him a very school inappropriate name?
He sighs next to you, and you glare at him. “Sigh one more time and the files aren’t the only things that are getting shredded.” He scoffs. “What can you even do? You can’t even solve a simple calculus problem.”
A wave of something intense, you can’t tell what it is, flows through you, and you angrily grab his collar, face inches from yours.
You’re not sure what it was, maybe hormones, who knows?, that caused you to simply say, “Well, I can do this,” and smash your lips onto his.
He’s shocked at first, frozen, but surprisingly melts into it.
And just as he brings you closer, you break the kiss. You stare at each other for a couple of seconds before you abruptly turn and walk out, leaving him to do the rest of the work.
The next day, week, he actually doesn’t bring it up. The kiss, or you leaving him behind. You’re not even sure why you did it.
But things definitely changed. The looks he would send you and the comments. You wouldn’t say they got worse, actually the opposite. His comments were less harsh-just as frequent- but there was something else, hidden deeper, whenever you would meet his eyes.
You might’ve jammed your finger on a basketball. But you didn’t want to admit it(more like you were too lazy to do anything about it). Or maybe you were just too stubborn and didn’t want to go to the nurse. But it constantly bothered you throughout the whole day, so you went anyway. For some reason, you were nervous, thinking you were gonna have to face taeyong again.
As quiet as possible, you twist the door open, creeping inside. Surprisingly, it’s empty. Frowning, you look around. There’s no one here?
You think you feel disappointed? but you laugh, instead just brushing it off. Muttering, you turn around to leave when you notice Taeyong. Standing in the doorway, looking confusedly at you. “Why are you here again?”
Awkwardly coughing, you mumble, “I jammed my finger or something, I don’t know... C-Can you check it?”
He sighs, gently taking your hand and leading you over to the bench. You watch as he examines it, making a small noise of pain when he touches it. He looks up, “what did you do?”
You glance away sheepishly, “...basketball??” “Well, you probably sprained it. I’ll tape it. Does it hurt?” Slowly, you nod.
As he deftly wraps your finger, you stare at him. His eyes, nose, lips. And after he looks up, an irritating knowing expression on his face, he still holds onto your hand. “Miss smarty pants finally stopped talking, huh?”
You blink. “-what? Uh,, I’m going... Thanks, I guess,” you barely finish your sentence. Slipping your hand away from his grip, he watches as you quickly whisk out from the office.
It wasn’t even a week later. Your next visit. Except girls were visiting him- you could tell they obviously didn’t have a reason for going. That was a lie, their reason was him. Trying to flirt their way in, you thought with a tsk! Their heads turn to look at you, taeyong included.
You could easily tell the look on his face- annoyed,  exasperated but still trying to hide it. You suddenly felt bad for him- it was probably tiring to have girls all over you all the time. Clearing your throat, you send a fake smile to them.
“Are you guys finished?” They share a look before brushing past you.
You hear a cough, turning towards the sound. Taeyong stands up from the desk, muttering thanks. You almost forgot why you were here.
Plopping into one of the chairs, you stare up at the ceiling. “I’m missing something.” You can sense his confusion even when you’re not looking. “What?”
Your head lolls toward him. “Here,” you casually point to your head. “I can’t focus in class today.”
He frowns. “So what do you want me to do about it?” Humming, you reply, “Nothing. You’re not leaving for class now, right?”
“No, why?” You sigh. “Let me just stay here. You don’t have to do anything, just don’t make me go back to class.”
“Y/n. What’s going on? You’re missing your lesson, and I know you would never miss a chance to study more than me.”
After a pause, you look at him. “Let’s not talk for like five minutes, alright?” He abruptly stands up, walking over to you, legs dangling off the sides of the chair.
Taking your face in his palms, he examines you. “What’s wrong? Did you eat something bad? How much sleep did you get last night?”
Blushing, you slap his hands away. “Nothing’s wrong !! Can’t I just be here if I want?”
Taeyong squints. “Four hours?” Rolling your eyes, you get up to leave, but his hand catches your uninjured one. “Stay.” You huff, about to snatch your hand away, but his grip tightens. “I want you to.”
Normally, taeyong wouldn’t allow anyone to just hang out in the office, but for some reason, he just blurted that out.
Your eyes widen, stopping your struggle.  “w-why are you suddenly saying that?” He mutters you can barely understand. “It gets lonely in here..”
You try to fight the smile growing onto your face. He was a lot cuter when he was shy like this.
“ I lied. The real reason I came was for you to take this tape off my finger. I didn’t know how long I was supposed to keep it on, and then I kinda forgot about it.” Letting the grin breakthrough on your face, you continue. “But I didn’t know I would be getting more.”
You notice his flushed face and red ears. But what you don’t notice are the girls watching through the window.
Cue the jealous confrontation. Frankly, you kinda forgot about the whole ordeal- exams were coming up, and just because Taeyong helped you didn’t mean you were gonna let him win.
Page 534. That’s the page you were on before rudely being interrupted by a bunch of lowerclassmen. It’s confusing at first, but you stupidly agree to follow them outside to an empty hallway. There were still some lingering effects of that concussion, huh.,,,
You couldn’t tell earlier, but now facing them, their faces seemed annoyed? Angry?
“Are you dating Taeyong?” you’re guessing the leader of the ‘gang’ demands. You squint in confusion. “What?-no! Why are you asking?”
The girl scoffs. “Then why are you always flirting with him?” She moves closer, to the point where her face is right in front of yours, causing you to raise an eyebrow. “Just know, he’ll never date someone like you alright? So back off.”
You laugh, eyes glittering in amusement, but the tone in your voice says otherwise. “Who says I have to listen to you? Even if I was flirting with him- which is none of your business- I can do whatever I want.”
There’s a lot of emotions swirling inside you. Shock, irritation, anger. For someone like taeyong, his fangirls were a lot different.
“If you’re going to waste my time, I’m leaving.”
You feel as if someone lit a match within you, but you turn to leave before it gets out of control.
A hand grabs yours. Hard. Before spinning you around until you feel it. A hard slap leaving tingles on your cheek. And then, of course, a harsh tug on your hair, pulling you closer to that wretched face.
You can’t even think, process anything- it was too shocking. “This is a warning. Stay away from Lee Taeyong. Or next time it’ll be worse.” That’s all it takes for you to move once more.
You slap her wrist away from your hair, emotions boiling. You enjoy the split second where her face shows fear, but it quickly changes back. She raises her arm again, and you do the same. No way in hell are you letting her touch you again.
It almost feels like slow motion, both of your arms hovered in the air until a voice cuts through.
“Y/n?”
And then everyone freezes. You recognize his voice immediately. Taeyong’s standing at the end of the hallway, eyes wide and body tense.
Hilarious how fast the whole group changes. Two-faced little- “Taeyong!!! We-we were just trying to get to class, and all of a sudden they- they attacked us! Please-!”
Scoffing, you’re about to just walk away, but Taeyong rushes to you. “Are you alright? Did you get hurt?” His eyes search your whole body, panicked.
Maybe your cheek was stinging pretty bad, but it was nothing compared to the raw satisfaction from those looks on the girls' faces. You don’t even spare a glance back as Taeyong drags you to the nurse's office.
He sits you down in a chair, wasting no time in grabbing medicine. No words are exchanged.
“Where did they hit you?” You couldn’t form the words to question how he knew. Swallowing, your hand raises to your cheek.
You can’t tell if you hate or love the way he looks at you -concerned, tenderly.
Even the way he speaks so softly. “It’s bruised...” Taeyong takes a glob of some white cream, making you wince when he makes contact with your cheek. His whisper of an apology tickles your face.
It’s silent as he tends to you. The only thing you can hear is your thudding heartbeat.
“I-is there more? Did they hit you anywhere else?” “No... thank you though.” As he cleans up, you really don’t have anything to say.
“Will you at least tell me why they did that? You wouldn’t provoke anyone, I know.” You bite the inside of your cheek, debating.
He sits in front of you, pleading. “Please?” You’re bewildered as to why he wants to know so bad, but you answer anyway, speaking quietly. “Your fan club-whatever, fangirls. They were jealous of me, apparently. It was stupid of me to follow them, and it was stupid of me to cause a scene.”
He takes your hand, and you’re surprised at the anger on his face. “No. It wasn’t. They were out of control. It’s my fault since you said they were my-uh fans... I just didn’t know they would do such a thing. Seriously, I’ll tell them to stop completely.”
“It’s fine,” you sigh, just wanting to go home and sleep. Taeyong’s grip on your hand tightens.
“It’s not fine!” He objects, voice getting louder.
You’re startled at his outburst. “Why do you care?”
“Will you stop getting hurt??”
You frown. “That’s not what I asked. Why are you getting so angry?” You realize how close your faces have gotten, and he must’ve too, considering the sudden red cheeks. A lightbulb goes off in your head.
Moving in more to bring your face even closer to his, you examine his reaction. Watching as his eyebrows raise before swiftly moving backward.
A mischievous grin finds its way onto your face. You pretend to tap your chin before asking, eyes glinting, “so? why do you care so much?”
Taeyong huffs, fiddling with the hem of his shirt. “It’s just cause I won’t have anyone to compete with anymore if you’re always hurt. Don’t get any ideas... and stop coming to the nurse’s office!! Just go out with me outside of school,” he grumbles. "-and where no one can hurt you," he adds.
You pout, “I like visiting you.” Both of you falling back into a comfortable silence as you nod decisively. “Alright, since it’s nurse’s orders. But.....”
He glances at you, waiting for you to continue.
Your face turns serious, and so does his. Facing him, you hold your pinky out in front of you, staring him in the eye. “Promise me.”
“Promise you what?”
“That you’ll take care of me. Whenever I’m hurt.”
And you enjoy the moment when his pinky comes up and wraps around yours.
A/N: I wrote these situations as a joke, but If you ever get hit in the head and it seems ‘more than harmless’ , please get it checked out ! (I would know from experience ...!)

Part Two
My other writing can be found here
While your costume had seemed like a great idea two days ago you now thought differently.
Technically it was a great costume, but only because you hadn’t exactly planned on needing to step out of the club to make an angry phone call. Alas here you were, legs shaking and teeth clattering because of your stupidly short dress, this situation the last nail in the coffin that would finally pronounce your disaster with Colin dead for good. You weren’t sad about it in the least, only cold. If only you’d thought of grabbing your jacket on your way outside this wouldn’t be as bad, it was the end of October and you were in New York after all, but you’d been so angry to see his caller ID on your screen that you’d stormed out without thinking, which you now deeply regretted.
Stepping back inside was like heaven and running into a wall at the same time, if said wall was made out of hot air and the smell of sweat, hairspray and alcohol. You really shouldn’t be happy about stuffy air, but at least you weren’t shivering anymore so you were going to mark it down as a success in your books. Since the restrooms were close to your right you made a quick detour, checking if everything was still where it was supposed to be.
At least your boobs hadn’t fallen out yet and you dismissed the judgy stares in the restroom as you readjusted your cleavage and reapplied your bold red lipstick. Normally you’d stare as well, not judging but usually intrigued by women who portrayed such confidence but tonight you were one of these women and you wouldn’t let anyone else ruin it. You’d earned a good night out after finally escaping Colin’s manipulative fuckboy ways and telling him to get lost for good.
So with your chin up and your shoulders straight you stepped out of the restroom, determined to find your group of friends again so you could get drunk and finally have a good time. It took a bit longer than you’d like to admit, your heels only barely giving your tiny frame a height advantage but then you finally spotted the fluffy halo of your best friend. After making sure that it was really her – there were enough angels in this room to make any priest happy after all – you quickly made your way over to her.
Or at least you tried.
You’d only gotten a few steps in when your heel got caught in the costume of a guy dressed up as mummy – which really only consisted of his regular clothes and what you estimated to be about three rolls of toilet paper – and you stumbled. You could already see yourself in the emergency room of the closest hospital with a broken nose from crashing to the ground, blood running down your face and staining your already red dress. Perhaps you could play it off as a part of your costume but it’d still hurt and your night would definitely be over.
But none of that happened because you were saved by a very handsome Superman. He’d stood with his back to you, you’d definitely spotted his broad shoulders underneath the stretched blue fabric earlier, but he’d turned in your direction right before gravity had decided to take its toll on you. Apparently his costume was justified though, because he caught you with cat-like reflexes, wrapping his hands around your arms and pulling you back towards an upright position before anything damaging could happen.
He was a lot taller than you so the first thing you really noticed of him was his throat and perhaps you really should’ve dressed up as a vampire because you noticed that he had a very sexy throat, if that was even a thing. Your weird thoughts were interrupted by him chuckling though and your gaze quickly snapped up to meet his and you really weren’t sure if you should congratulate or scold yourself for how you’d managed to end up in his arms.
The handsome stranger was wearing glasses in true Clark Kent fashion and his hair was better than any DC artist could have dreamed of, perfectly tousled in the way that showed that he liked to run his hands through it and you’d be lying if you said that you weren’t tempted to do the same. In the dim lighting of the club you couldn’t make out the color of his eyes behind his glasses but they could honestly be yellow and he’d still be hot as fuck.
Sometime during your almost-fall your hands had ended up on his chest and you really should be embarrassed about the fact that you were practically feeling him up but somehow you couldn’t find yourself to care enough to let go. You relaxed your hands from the tight grasp they had on his shirt and instead carefully splayed them out on his chest as if you were going to push yourself off of him but not really doing so. With how you were pressed against him you could feel the heat radiating through his shirt and how firm his body was, his muscular built more and more evident with every passing second. His hands had started to wander as well, moving up from the side of your arms towards the top of your shoulders, the size of them burning itself into your mind as you just stared at each other.
If one were to ask you what day it was right this moment, you honestly wouldn’t be able to answer them despite everyone in this club dressed in Halloween costumes. Mozart himself could have returned from the dead to perform “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” with a string quartett in the middle of this dancefloor and you probably wouldn’t have noticed right now, too caught up in the eyes of this handsome stranger.
When he reached up with one of his hands to adjust the little devil’s horns on top of your head you blinked in surprise, finally snapping out of your daze.
“Oh my God I’m so sorry, I totally didn’t mean to crash into you but my heel got caught and-“, you began to ramble, your sense of common decency finally kicking in but he only laughed and since neither of you had taken a step backwards yet you could feel it rumbling through his chest.
“Don’t worry about it, I don’t mind having beautiful girls quite literally falling for me”, he joked and if he were any other guy you probably would’ve scoffed at his choice of words but somehow the boyish charm worked well for him and you found yourself grinning as you came up with a response.
“Mmm let’s hope this isn’t a normal occurrence for you because I’m not a fan of getting caught in traffic.” You finally found the strength to take a, very reluctant, step back, untangling yourself from his grasp and dropping your hands but still smiling up at him. He definitely had the potential to be your catch for the night. You could really use the distraction after all.
Your blissful thoughts were interrupted by someone tugging at your arm though, a look over your shoulder revealing a pouting angel dressed in white and with a bouncing halo. It seemed like Emily had found you instead after you’d gotten distracted by your hero.
“There you are! I’ve been looking all over the place for you”, she whined and you could tell by her slurred words that she’d gotten quite the head start while you were outside on your phone as she was well on her way to get plastered. Otherwise she never would’ve interrupted a conversation with a hot guy either, it was an unspoken wingwoman rule after all.
“Come on, Dana just brought a new round of shots and you need to catch up!” And with that she tightened her grip on your wrist and pulled you away. You barely managed to tell the handsome stranger to come find you later before he disappeared between the writhing bodies and was out of your sight.
Way too many shots later you found yourself on the dance floor, intoxicated and having a great time.
Your thoughts hadn’t wandered to Superman in quite a while, too consumed by alcohol and the thumping beat of the music, until you spotted him leaning against the banister of the top floor, drink in one hand and definitely watching you. Again, this would be creepy if he were anyone else but in this case it only made you appreciate the current sensual song even more, your eyes never leaving his as you moved your body to the beat. You were planning on going home with him later either way, you could tease him a little more before then, show him what he could have if he played his cards right.
He was still watching you a couple of songs later when your throat had gotten dry and your heels were starting to grow uncomfortable. In need of a break you pointed towards the bar, hoping that he’d understand and when he nodded you smiled brightly, excusing yourself from your group of friends so you could grab some water. You were done drinking for tonight, much more exciting things laying ahead of you and you wanted to be sober for them.
Water was apparently a welcome change from the regular orders the bartenders got because you were served immediately, a cool bottle set in front of you seconds later. You checked over your shoulder before taking a sip, spotting your Superman as he made his way towards you with a smile, one you returned before turning back around to climb on the stool that had just freed up so you could give your feet a well-deserved break.
When you felt a tap on your shoulder you fully expected it to be the hot guy, your most dazzling smile instantly on your lips as you turned around but it quickly fell off your face as you realized who it really was.
When you were younger you’d often imagined yourself in this moment, thought of what you’d say when you’d finally see him again after all this time apart. A small part of you had pined after him for years and fantasies of how your eyes would meet from across the room and how everything else would stop mattering had filled your daydreams once upon a time. But as you looked at him now there were no butterflies, no fireworks and you could still hear some remix of “Monster Mash” blaring over the speakers, the world was definitely still turning.
Perhaps you’d built up what had been between the two of you in your mind in the years of his absence, put him on a pedestal – he deserved to be one though because through everything he had been nothing short of a great guy – but as you looked at him you realized that all that was in the past. There was just a warm afterglow of what once was. As you looked at him now, there was absolutely no doubt that you didn’t love Anthony Beauvillier anymore.
“I wasn’t sure if it was really you, but wow Y/N you look great”, his familiar voice met your ears and it took you a second to realize that he’d slipped into French, the way the two of you had done countless times as teenagers.
You probably resembled a fish with the way you were opening and closing your mouth without saying anything but you couldn’t help yourself. Seeing Tito in this club had hit you like a fright train and you hadn’t expected it at all, which only made it worse.
Almost 20 Million people lived in New York State and over 8.3 Million in New York City alone. Brooklyn housed well over 500.000 people as well and yet you still managed to run into your ex in this club, despite the both of you growing up in Québec. If you were any good at math you would calculate the probability of this happening but you’d always sucked at it and it really wouldn’t help your situation either. You reminded yourself that you both worked here now but that was absolutely beside the point.
Before you managed to embarrass yourself even further you shook your head to clear your thoughts, smiling at the guy who had once held your heart before making the break into the NHL. He was dressed as a boy scout, with medals pinned to his shirt, the scarf thingy and everything and the costume was so incredibly him that you immediately felt catapulted back into your teenage years. It was easy to fall back into your old routine then.
“Oh yeah, do you think your Mom would still speak so highly of me if she saw me dressed as a slutty devil?”, you joked and he threw his head back in laughter, taking you even more by surprise when he threw his arms around you in a hug. It was a bit awkward with you sitting on the bar stool and all and it made you realize that he himself didn’t even feel the same anymore, his career of being a professional athlete shaping his body into a much more bulkier version of the one you were used to.
As you looked over his shoulder you caught the gaze of your Superman and your thoughts immediately returned to him. What must he be thinking of you hugging another stranger at the bar after telling him to come see you? The confusion was evident of his face, a crease between his eyebrows giving his thoughts away and you noticed how he scrunched up his nose in a very cute way so you immediately pulled back from Tito, reaching up to adjust your horns as a disguise for your sudden movement.
“So, did you finally manage to make your dreams of living and working in New York City come true?”, he asked as he took a step closer to let someone else pass by and you nodded, amazed that he still remembered after all these years. He really was one of the good guys.
“Yep, I finally made it, although it’s not as glamorous as I thought it would be. But maybe that’s only us working class people, I’m sure it’s a lot different in your line of work.” Thankfully he picked up on your teasing and wasn’t insulted, only laughing even more as he finally had the space to move next to you so he could look at the crowd as well.
“Speaking of work..”, he trailed off as he switched back to English and to your utter disbelief he waved your Superman over. Superman was reluctant to move at first, that much you could tell by looking at him, and since you watched him extra closely you were probably the only one to catch him flinching a little as Tito threw his arm around his shoulders but his confused expression was obvious as he looked between the two of you.
“Y/N, this is my teammate and best friend Mat, I’m sure you’ve heard of him. Mat, this is my ex Y/N. You’ve also heard of her.”
Of course you’d heard of Mathew Barzal, last year’s Calder winner and rising star among the NHL’s elite players but it seemed like you were a victim of the Clark Kent Effect because you hadn’t recognized him at all with the glasses on.
Now your Superman had a name but the only thing you could focus on were the words “best friend”. No matter how hot Mat was and how much you’d wanted him before, very much imagining him helping you out of your tight dress, you couldn’t do that to Tito.
Mat seemed to come to the same realization as you because he plastered what could only be described as a business smile on his face, extending his hand for you to shake. You took it, relishing in the way his warm palm felt against yours and allowing yourself to enjoy his touch one last time before letting go and smiling at him with sad eyes as you introduced yourself.
Tito stayed to order a drink, pulling Mat and you into a conversation and therefore preventing your escape and while that was already bad enough in itself, he unknowingly took your breath away when he asked Mat:
“Hey, did you ever find that hot klutz you told me about? The one that fell into your arms earlier?”
Tito had his back towards the both of you so he didn’t see the way Mat looked down at you with sad eyes as well before pulling himself together and responding:
“Yeah, but turns out she’s not available after all.”
The rest of the night passed in a blur, you’d returned to alcohol after saying goodbye to Tito and Mat and promising Tito to stay in touch, so you barely remembered climbing into an uber hours later and only really came to your senses when you chugged a water bottle in your kitchen.
“Wait, weren’t you planning on going home with that hot Superman you mentioned earlier? What happened to him?”, Emily asked from her spot on the couch, her usual spot after a night out since your apartment was closer.
“I guess he left”, you answered, not really willing to go into any details right now.
“Aw, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, me too.”
And wasn’t that the truth.

♪ The Last Day of Summer With You
Hoshi/Kwon Soonyoung : Dancing in the "Rain"
Tumblr media
You and Soonyoung looked at each other, holding two different plants while squatting close to the ground.
It was a way for you two to comfort and encourage each other to continue pulling out dandelion and white clover weeds from your blossoming garden.
As if by the count of three, you and Soonyoung began pulling the plants. The squat was making your legs burn and you continued your attempt at plucking the stubborn dandelion; eventually causing you to fall backward flatly, your bum hitting the grassy floor of your backyard. Laying in your gloved hands were ripped leaves, yellow dandelion flowers, and stems with no roots attached.
Contradicting your failure, you heard a squeal of success from Soonyoung. He had been quiet throughout the entire weeding hour, only talking small bits and complaining. Soonyoung held up the roots of the dandelion while screeching in happiness.
You turned to see him laying down on the grass with the dandelions clutched in his hand, his arm that held the dandelions was raised high, like he was showing the unsupportive sky and burning weather of his achievements.
“God, I thought I would never get one of those mean things out of the ground... I always thought they looked a bit cute but sheesh!!!” Soonyoung shouted, finally letting his hands fall onto the cool green grass. “When can we stop this torturous weeding? I mean, it's the last day of summer, can't we spend today doing something fun, unlike weeding??”
Soonyoung sat up and began to sulk while placing the weeds he yanked into a plastic bag. His legs were spread out in front of him and his fluffy, disheveled hair reminded you of a hamster.
“I want to do something else too,” You replied. “But I'm afraid that when your mother comes to visit next week, the garden would look too unnatural.”
Soonyoung was panting as he crawled over to you, who was still sitting flatly on your bum.
“Aren't you hot?” Soonyoung asked, barely able to open his eyes because of the blinding sunlight. On this awfully hot final day of summer, Soonyoung just wanted to jump inside a pool.
You nodded in response to his question, staring absentmindedly at the dandelions you pulled. “Of course I am hot, the weather is like a lava pit.”
Soonyoung nodded in agreement. “Then why did you have to pick this special day out of all days to pick weeds??”
You turned to him and felt like you wanted to cry, not literally, of course, you were just feeling whiny, so, you threw your head against Soonyoung's shoulder.
“I just wish that rain will fall today...” You mumbled to yourself, loud enough for your boyfriend to overhear the small comment.
You jolted up and stood, placing your hands on your hips. You adjusted your hat and looked down at your boyfriend, who was staring up at you curiously.
“I'll go inside and get some water...” You said, determined for nothing.
You didn't want to pick weeds but the look of the overgrowing dandelions was constantly bugging you like a leech telling you to get rid of it. So, on this blazing ending day of summer, you decided that you couldn't take the messy lawn any longer.
After grabbing two cups of cold water, the moment you stepped outside, you were surprised to see Soonyoung waiting for you. You handed him the cold mug without a word but he didn't drink any, only set it down on the backyard stairs, and took your hand.
“I have something to show you.”
“All of a sudden??” You asked, placing down the cup, swallowing the last of the freezing water as he took you away.
Soonyoung smiled innocently. “I know you'll like it.”
You had no idea what your boyfriend was planning. He took you through the back door of the garage before pressing the front garage door to open. There were creaks and grinding noises as the garage door opened, leading to the driveway.
Then, you began to catch the sound of what seemed like falling rain. You turned around to try and look at the backyard but saw not even a trace of water.
“Look in front,” Soonyoung said while laughing, shyly covering his smile.
“What is this...?” You asked, amazed.
When the door fully opened, you were finally able to see it. The hose had been dragged from the backyard all the way here and you didn't know how, but your boyfriend managed to loop it on something on top of the garage door.
You subconsciously took steps forward, toward the “rain” that you had wished for earlier. Your heart was pounding as you stuck your hand out from under the shelter. Soonyoung did the same while gazing at you with a shy and pure grin.
“Do you like it? You said you wanted it to rain, right?” Soonyoung asked, drawing his hand back under the garage, hiding both of his hands behind his back. He leaned out forward a little bit to see your bright eyes as you looked at what he created for you.
You turned to him and with twinkling eyes, a gleaming, lovable, and dreamy smile, you squeaked, “I absolutely LOVE IT, SOONYOUNG!!!”
You wanted to hug him but instead, you took his hand and dragged him under the falling water drops that came from the hose. Soonyoung had probably chosen “shower” mode. The water coming from the hose was gentle and the drops were large; it felt like a shower, thus its name.
The refreshing feeling of washing away all the hotness was relaxing. You felt amazing under the rain that Soonyoung set up. You felt touched that he heard your soft mumble and then proceeded to give you exactly what you wanted. He deserved the world indeed.
Before you both knew it, you two were jumping around the driveway like little kids, getting soaked in water, splashing the driveway with your feet. You both didn't care whether or not it was dirty water; you both were having fun, smiling brightly, hand in hand, jumping around, have the best time of your lives under the “rain”, and defeating the summer heat.
The sun was shining down, the rays were still bright, illuminating each raindrop, and casting your shadows on the driveway.
You stopped after running short of breath from jumping and playing around so much. Soonyoung's wet hair made him look arousing and made your heartbeat pound faster Your eyesight was slightly blurred because of the continuous falling shower; every time you blinked, water would drop down from your eyelashes.
You called out to your boyfriend to ask if he was feeling refreshed yet but he couldn't hear you. He was in his own world, jumping like a little kid. The sight of him like this made you feel nothing but beatific. Staring at Soonyoung, you felt like he was an angel that descended from the heavens.
“Soonyoung!” You called out again, this time he turned around, his hair dripping wet drops as he turned around to face you.
“Huh?” He asked, still smiling like a child. He looked like he was extremely happy and genuinely having fun.
You didn't even say anything when he replied. You were caught up in his dreamy smile and eyes, along with his pulpous cheeks that you just wanted to squish together.
“Isn't this fun?” Soonyoung asked, leaning in a bit closer to your face.
You looked up at him and continued to grin happily. You went in closer too, thinking he was leaning in for a kiss, but Soonyoung only bumped his head against yours. With your foreheads against each other, he took one of your wet hands into his, tossing his other hand around your waist. Your empty hand instinctively went onto his shoulder.
After realizing what he was trying to do, you giggled softly. He was grinning.
“One, two, three, four, five,” Soonyoung counted as your steps followed each other rhythmically, turning into a graceful ballroom dance under the hose that was spraying a shower of water. “Six, seven, eight, and one, two, three...”
You twirled around, your spin causing water droplets to fly from your hair. Soonyoung watched as you elegantly spun, finding the soaked you utterly gorgeous. Your drenched hair and clothes somehow made you even more charming than you already were.
Snapping him out of his short daze, You asked as you twirled back into the arms of your dear lover, your back against his chest, “Aren't we wasting water? What about the water bills?”
Soonyoung chuckled attractively, his head leaning toward your neck as both of his hands fell onto your hips.
You flipped around to face him, your arms now wrapped around his shoulders. You tilted your head, waiting for his reply.
The corner of Soonyoung's lips lifted into a gentle smirk, as he replied with a somewhat seductive whisper, your foreheads kissing again.
“I won't be surprised if it amounts to over 1,000.”

A little birthday ramble for my favourite jean man~
It’s my favourite characters birthday??? Woah! That means I gotta try and actually make something-
So here, have this rather rushed birthday edgejeanist ramble for my favourite lanky jeanist because I love them too much.
Tagging: @chaotic-trash-can @kouricaesar @kiriderp @theshisthings @chiggersmcnuggies :)
TW: none! It’s fluff!
*buzz*
Tsunagu blinked slowly, his eyes adjusting to the morning light as he woke up to see two silver eyes staring straight back at him.
*buzz buzz*
“Good morning~” A familiar voice cooed.
Startled by the sudden greeting, the blond man grumbled and opened his eyes to see Shinya facing him, head perched in his hands as he smiled at his sleepy husband.
*buzz*
“Hm.....good morning....” Tsunagu mumbled, stretching his arms out and plopping them back down over the duvet.
*buzz*
“What....uhhh.....buzzing...huh?”
The silver haired man chuckled slightly at the other man’s confused expression. “Messages, love. It’s 7am. A rather special day, too, might I add~”
A rather special day?
What?
Was he missing something?
Tsunagu now felt even more confused than before as he laid there trying to piece things together.
“Wha-” he started, before being interrupted by Shinya letting out a loud laugh and pulling him into a big hug. “-hmmph?”
“Hahah! Ahhh, you are so stupid in the mornings, I love you so much hahaha~” The smaller man snickered as he buried his face into the crook of his husbands neck.
The still-very-confused giraffe blinked. “Did- did you just call me stupid?!”
“Heheh...”
“Oi!” Tsunagu pouted, blushing slightly at the sound of Shinya’s adorable laughter. “Don’t make fun of me......I’m really confused, I don’t know what’s happening, and I’m worried now that I’m missing something very important-”
Shinya simply chuckled and rolled his eyes in response to Tsunagu’s weary mumbles.
“Yes, dear~”
Yawning loudly, Tsunagu slowly sat up and started to gather his thoughts. Did he have work today? Or was it his day off? He wasn’t sure. But he could definitely tell he was missing something.
“Love?”
“Hm?” Shinya hummed inquisitively as he also propped himself up, hooking his arms around Tsunagu’s waist and resting his head on the other man’s shoulder.
“What....what day is it?”
Shinya smiled and let out a small sigh.
“Tuesday!” He exclaimed brightly, his eyes sparkling mischievously as he toyed with his partner’s confused morning brain.
“Ah.....wait, no, I mean the date. ‘Cause it might- oh come on, Shinya, stop-” Tsunagu huffed, realising the smaller man’s intentions to mess with him even more than he already was. That little sneaky ninja....
Shinya simply chuckled at the taller man’s response and slid off the side of the bed, making his way to go and get ready for the day. “Heh...it’s the 5th of October....ring any bells?”
The 5th of October????
The 5th of October........
“Ah!” Tsunagu jumped up, accidentally startling the other man with his sudden enthusiasm. “It’s my sister’s birthday!!!”
Wow.
Shinya stood there for a moment before bursting into laughter, though trying very hard to stifle it. ‘Oh my god he’s a fucking idiot-’
Tsunagu blinked. “W-why are you laughing?”
The silver haired man shook his head and tried to keep a straight face, thinking incredibly hard about his response before simply settling with a small, “it took ya long enough!”, before turning to head out of the bedroom.
“I’m phoning Ai, gonna pester her until she answers me- wait, where are you going?” Tsunagu questioned, rapidly unlocking his phone and dialling his sister’s number while managing to completely ignore the various messages and notifications that he had received.
“Ahh, it’s getting kinda late, I need to go and wake Izumi up for school, I have work, and I’m pretty sure you have a morning patrol, do you not?” Shinya scratched the back of his neck as he made his way out the door. “Make sure ehe- ahEm- make sure to tell her happy birthday for me!”
“Ah....yeah you have a point....okay then.”
Tsunagu looked down at the phone, making sure it was ringing, and waited for it to be answered.
*click*
“Hello?”
“Hey, dumbass, happy birthday!! Hope you have a great day, love you lots!” Tsunagu sang down the phone, showing no hesitation to greeting his beloved sibling.
“Thanks, you lanky shit, happy birthday to you too! Sending love from all of us, have a great day yourself!” Ai chirped in reply. “Don’t get lost on patrol this time either, stupid, last time we waited for hours at mom’s for you to finally show up.”
Tsunagu blinked. What was that? “Happy birthday to me too?”
“Huh?”
That’s when he finally fully woke up and actually realised what a literal dumbass he was being. A massive idiot. No wonder why Shinya was acting so smug and snickering to himself earlier.
“Oh my fucking god-” Tsunagu covered his face with his hands as he wallowed in his own embarrassment. “Ai, I’m a fucking idiot, it’s my birthday isn’t it?”
The line went silent for about ten seconds before the woman on the other side erupted into fits of laughter.
“OH MY GOD!!! HAHAHA THAT IS FANTASTIC-”
“Ai...”
“AHAHA TSU FORGOT- AHAHAhA-”
“Ai, stop, it’s my birthday-”
“OUR birthday! You somehow remembered that it was mine and forgot that it was yours as well- we’re TWINS Tsunagu, we have had the same birthday for over 37 years!! Hahaha~”
“Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever....” the blond man sheepishly muttered as he continued to hide his face in shame. This was going to be a long day...
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
After what seemed like a while of embarrassment and one-sided laughter, Tsunagu ended up hanging up and threw his phone to the side, huffing as he tried to shake off how embarrassed he felt.
He sat thinking about the day ahead of him for a little while before noticing some hushed whispers and muffled laughter coming from behind the door.
Smiling to himself slightly at how adorable his husband and daughter were, he rolled his eyes, laughing as he opened the door to reveal two sneaky silver haired troublemakers staring up at him with big mischievous eyes.
“Gotcha~” Tsunagu sang, reaching down to tickle Izumi under the chin playfully.
“Wahhhh!! He caught us!!!” The small child exclaimed, giggling as she jumped into her fathers arms. “Happy Birthday, dad!!”
“Oh, why thank you, sunshine!” The blond man happily responded, twirling his daughter around as he exchanged a soft gaze with his partner, who was now leaning against the door frame with a cup of warm tea.
“So you finally remembered? Got that old brain woken up finally~~” Shinya teased, a sly grin spread across his face.
Tsunagu chuckled. “Hey now, you’re only a few years younger than me y’know! And I’m only a year older than I was yesterday, leave me be!”
“Ahh, sorry sorry~”
“You better be. You weren’t any help this morning when I was oh so lost and confused! Laughing at me, unbelievable!”
“Papa said you were very silly and forgot your birthday!” Izumi chimed in, sticking her tongue out at her taller dad as he ruffled her hair.
“Did he now?” Tsunagu raised an eyebrow as he looked back up at Shinya.
“Noooo......” the sly ninja pouted, winking at their daughter in a very over exaggerated manner.
“I see.....”
Sharing plenty of mischievous joy, the three of them laughed and headed downstairs to get ready for the day.
Watching as their child whizzed around gathering all of her school items, the two parents stood silently together, smiling at Izumi’s enthusiasm as she twirled around.
Shinya wrapped his arm around Tsunagu and looked up at the taller figure gently as he felt the other return the same action, smiling as he felt his face heat up, ever so slightly, and familiarly.
“Happy birthday, hon.” The smaller figure said as he leant into his husband’s warm embrace. “Love you.”
Tsunagu sighed happily in response, feeling his heart flutter slightly as he looked down at his small husband, before leaning down and pecking Shinya’s forehead and smiling as he rested his head gently on top of his. “Thank you, dear.”
“Love you too.”

A Game of Chess
MASTERLIST
This was an anon request to write a fic that involved Spencer’s childhood friend Ethan that appeared in season 2′s episode Jones. To the anon who requested this, I’m so sorry it took so long to write, but I seemed to have trouble getting this fic perfect. But finally, I tweaked it and molded it into a story I’m proud of and really like how it turned out. Shoutout to the wonderful @multifandommandy for helping me with the inspiration for the unsub in this fic. With her suggestion of using the real Axeman of New Orleans from the 1900′s, the unsub in this fic was born. I hope you guys enjoy this fic. Enjoy some sassy, jealous Spencer. Happy reading!

New Orleans.
Home of jazz, amazing food and beautiful sights.
Unfortunately, it was also the home of a current and active serial killer.
You and the rest of the Behavioral Analysis team had been called in for a serial killer running rampant in New Orleans, which meant that left little time to actually enjoy the sights.
“Remind me before we leave to take you to this jazz club I think you’d like,” your friend and coworker, Spencer nudged you with a smile.
“If we have a moment to breathe,” you groaned, taking a peek at the murder board that had already been set up by the local detectives.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make time for my favorite agent.”
He gave you a slight smile and a sly wink as he headed in the opposite direction of you to get started on some geographical profiles.
You felt a flush creep up from your neck all the way to your cheeks. It was no lie that you fancied the intelligent Dr. Reid and some days, you thought he actually reciprocated your feelings.
It felt like the two of you had been circling one another constantly for months, either pretending the feelings didn’t exist or shamelessly flirting with one another. At this point, you weren’t sure anything would ever happen between you two.
That still didn’t stop how flustered he could make you. Such as how he had just done.
It was something special to have his undivided attention. That was a recurring thing for you though. You always seemed to receive a more special kind of attention from him than the rest of your friends—aka the rest of the BAU team.
You were heading towards the table in front of the murder board to set down your things when JJ quite literally appeared out of nowhere by your side.
“Don’t think I didn’t notice that wink,” she smirked knowingly, settling down in a seat at the head of the table.
“Don’t start,” you retorted, cutting your eyes towards her in a warning glance.
“I’m just saying,” she smirked, opening the file and flipping through it before she spoke her next words.
“It’s just a matter of time before the other shoe drops.”
Whatever that meant.
You hooligans think you can catch me, but you can’t. You won’t. I’m much more cunning than you think.
You’ve found victims one, two and three. What about four, five and six? Seven? Maybe they exist, maybe they will exist soon. That’s for me to know and you to find out. If I wanted to, I could slay thousands of your best citizens, for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death.
“Well, that’s not chilling at all,” you muttered.
A letter had been sent to the NOLA police department, apparently from the killer himself. He was taunting them and your team, that much you knew.
“Definitely a narcissist,” Rossi said, relaying your thoughts, “He thinks he’s untouchable.”
“Not to mention he actually took a line from the infamous Axeman of New Orleans case,” Spencer pointed out.
Everyone blinked at him, clueless.
“The Axeman was a serial killer from May 1918 to October 1919 here in New Orleans. He was never caught, but he typically murdered couples with an axe; axes that belonged to the victims. It’s similar to our current unsub although he’s killing women with an axe. That’s actually kind of similar to the Axeman because he did actually slay a few single victims, some being female and-”
Spencer paused, noticing the entire team staring at him, once again.
“I’m rambling, aren’t I?”
“Just a bit,” you nodded, holding back a grin.
Once the boy got started on something, it was hard to get him to stop. Or not talk 100 mph.
“Is this guy a genius or something? I didn’t even know about that serial killer,” the local detective, named Valadez, whispered to you as Spencer started back up and more to the point.
“You get used to it, trust me,” you grinned.
“The Axeman actually sent a few letters of his own,” Spencer said, looking at the copy of the letter, examining it, “He quite literally copied one sentence word for word.”
“Which one would that be?” Tara asked.
“I could slay a thousand of your best citizens, for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death,” Spencer read.
“That’s the copied line?” Emily asked.
“Yeah,” Spencer answered distractedly, still studying the writing, “From the Axeman’s letter on March 13th, 1919.”
“So is this just a copycat?” Matt asked.
“I don’t think so,” Spencer answered, “Although the similarities shouldn’t be ignored. He kills women with axes and then sends a letter that has a line that’s verbatim for what the Axeman said.”
“So maybe he’s getting his inspiration from this Axeman guy?” JJ questioned.
“It’s possible,” Spencer nodded.
Spencer was totally in the zone, looking at the writing, tongue poked out of the side of his mouth.
“At most, he has an ego that needs to be stroked,” you said, “There will definitely be more victims.”
“Victim three, Raquel Clayton was discovered outside a jazz club,” Detective Valadez said, studying the murder board.
Spencer’s head jerked up.
“Did you say jazz club?”
“Yeah, does that mean something to you?” Luke asked, curious.
“The Axeman also mentioned in said letter he would spare anyone that was listening to jazz music on a specific night. That night the entire town had dance halls filled with people listening to jazz music. Either his motive is somehow related to this or this guy is just fascinated by the Axeman case. What jazz club was it?”
You were glancing over the detective’s shoulder, reading the file. The name struck you as one you’d just heard earlier in the day. With a smirk, you looked at Spencer.
“Up for a trip to your favorite jazz club?”
“It doesn’t surprise me that I managed to actually bring you here, but under the fact of work circumstances,” Spencer grumbled.
“Hey, we’re here aren’t we? We can enjoy a little music while we ask around and see if anyone has seen anything.”
The club was darkly lit, but was filled with soothing sounds of jazz music. You could see why Spencer liked it here.
“The music is pretty.”
“It is, isn’t it?” he agreed.
You stood for a few moments more taking in the pleasant sights and sounds around you before sighing.
“Guess we better get to work, huh?”
Spencer nodded.
“You start with the bartender and workers around there, I’ll start at the back. I’ll meet up with you later,” Spencer said.
You nodded and headed off to start your first rounds of questioning.
-
An hour later you met a disheartened Spencer. He’d had no more luck than you had. No one had seen anyone suspicious, no one had seen anything, there wasn’t even the first hint of who a suspect was.
This guy seemed to be as invisible as the real Axeman.
“Maybe Jazz was just a coincidence?” Spencer asked.
“You know as well as I do, that there’s no such thing as coincidences in our line of work,” you commented.
He was about to say something when a voice interrupted him.
“Reid, is that you?!”
You and Spencer turned to see a tall man, roughly the same age as Spencer with dark hair and dark eyes. His long beard would’ve been unruly on anyone else, but on this man it seemed to fit him perfectly.
“Ethan?” Spencer’s face lit up, as he hugged the guy.
“It’s been quite a long time since I’ve seen you. What’s it been? 13 years?”
“About,” Spencer nodded, “I didn’t know you were still here in New Orleans.”
“I just got back after some traveling. You can take the boy out of New Orleans but you can’t take New Orleans out of the boy.”
You watched the exchange back and forth, smiling politely.
“Are you gonna introduce me, Spencer?” you asked.
“Well, does Reid here have a girlfriend? Cause if so, he sure does have mighty fine taste,” the man said.
“No, he’s not my boyfriend,” you chuckled, “I’m his partner.”
You held out your hand.
“Supervisory Special Agent Y/N Y/L/N. But you can just call me Y/N.”
He smiled, shaking your hand.
“Reid, you didn’t tell me the FBI had such beautiful girls like Y/N here. If I’d known that, I wouldn’t have dropped out of the FBI so long ago.”
You smiled bashfully as you dropped your hand from his.
“Y/N this is an old friend from Las Vegas, Ethan. We grew up together.”
With a sidelong glance at Spencer you could see him jaw clenching and unclenching. Something he did when he was annoyed. That intrigued you. What was annoying him?
“So you were in the FBI?” you asked, curious.
“Nah. After the first day of training, I dropped out. Left it to this guy here,” Ethan nodded to Spencer, “I knew Reid would be the better agent anyway.”
“What made you drop out?”
You winced, realizing your tactlessness.
“Sorry if that was too personal of a question,” you apologized.
“No need to apologize,” he held his hands up, “With a pretty agent like you, I’d spill all my secrets.”
A slight blush grazed your cheeks and you smiled brightly up at him. It was nice to hear such compliments. It was something you weren’t used to.
“I figured out I wasn’t up for being in the FBI. Much more of a musician, I guess you’d say.”
“Oh, you play?”
“Sax, piano, a little guitar.”
“Impressive,” you grinned.
“So, Reid. You doing better now? No more addiction?”
“Addiction?”
You furrowed your brows, looking at Spencer quizzically.
“It’s nothing,” Spencer mumbled.
“Last time I saw him he was pretty messed up,” Ethan said, demonstrating a shaking hand, “What was it you were on again?”
“Dilaudid,” Spencer answered, lips pressed in a thin line.
“What?”
You had joined the team only eight years ago, in your early twenties, just shy of Spencer’s thirtieth birthday. He’d already been with the BAU for eight years himself by that time. There were a lot of things you didn’t know about his past and apparently, this was one of them.
“Y/N is a newer member to the team,” Spencer said, suddenly seeming more relaxed, “She only joined a couple of years ago.”
“How long has it been since you’ve been in the BAU again man?” Ethan asked, taking a sip of his drink.
“Fifteen years.”
“Damn. That’s impressive. I could never. Guess that’s why I ended up here,” he motioned with his glass, indicating this certain jazz club.
Spencer’s phone rang, but he ignored it.
“Speaking of,” Ethan turned to you, “How would you like to hear some great music sometime? I could get you front row seats. Maybe even play a request or two just for you.”
He winked at you, increasing your flush. It’d been a long while since you’d had a guy hit on you, hence your constant flushing. You were flattered and you were seriously thinking about taking up his offer.
Spencer’s cell started in again. Once again, it went ignored.
“If I get a chance, I’d love to come hear you play.”
He was about to say something when the cell rang again. For a second you actually thought it was Spencer’s phone again, until you felt the vibration against your thigh from your own phone.
“One second, excuse me,” you apologized, taking your phone out of your pocket.
You had a missed call, followed by a new text.
New body found. Meet us at crime scene ASAP.
It was from Emily.
“I’m awfully sorry to break up this reunion, boys,” you said, “But we gotta go. The job calls.”
“No problem. See you around dude,” Ethan said, patting Spencer on the back.
“Anytime you want to take up my offer, just drop by. I’ll hook you up.”
This was said to you.
He raised his tumbler in your direction with a flirty grin as he backed away.
When you turned to follow Spencer out, you realized he’d already left.
You and Spencer arrived at the crime scene ten minutes later.
“What took you guys so long?” Emily asked.
“Sorry, my phone was off and Y/L/N didn’t tell me you needed us.”
You shot Spencer a look.
What the hell was he talking about? You certainly had. Especially after he’d ignored his own ringing phone twice.
“It’s fine, you’re here now,” Emily said.
“Another body was dumped. Female, approximately 25-30, seems to be wounded from an ax,” Detective Valadez said.
“Man, he really did a number on this poor woman,” you mumbled, shaking your head, “She must’ve really pissed him off.”
The victim was so wounded and bloodied, it was difficult to identify much else about her.
“I know what that’s like,” Spencer mumbled.
You glanced at him again, your questioning glance being plainly ignored.
What was up with him?
“Split up. Witnesses said they had just seen her get off of the bus down the street. We need to know how she ended up here,” Emily said, “Y/N, Spence. I want you to start at the bus stop and see if you can retrace her steps.”
So that’s how you and Spencer ended up at the bus stop, him mumbling to himself and you exasperated at his silent treatment.
“How are we going to figure anything out when you won’t even talk to me?”
He continued to ignore you, walking up and down the sidewalk, thinking.
“If you’re mad can you just please tell me why?”
“I don’t know. You might be too busy flirting with some passerby,” he grumbled.
You were even more confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Back to ignoring you again.
“I think we’ve figured out about as much as we can from here, let’s go,” Spencer said, taking off.
He left you behind feeling even more confused than to begin with.
The only bright spot of the next few days was that there was a break in the case.
Thanks to Spencer’s excellent geographical profiling skills, he’d managed to narrow down the unsub’s hunting ground.
The icing on the cake?
In the dead middle of his hunting ground was a jazz club. The same jazz club you’d been to with Spencer the day before, the one where Ethan frequently played at.
Two more victims had been murdered, something that made your heart twist painfully in your chest. You’d been too late to help them, but now, you could get justice for the poor women who had met their untimely end.
To attempt to catch him, the team came up with the idea of sending an undercover in and staking out the place in an attempt to lure him out.
You were going to be the one that would be sent in. In fact, you yourself volunteered to. You wanted to arrest this guy and throw him in handcuffs. It’s what the bastard deserved after his heinous crimes.
Even though Spencer had hardly talked to you for the last few days, he still flat out refused. He kept trying to talk you out of it and convince Emily to send someone else in. But you’d already made up your mind.
“You’re not going in there, Y/N,” he protested.
“Yes. I am.”
Your voice had a steely edge. He wasn’t going to change your mind.
“Do you know how dangerous it is?!” he’d thrown back at you.
“Gee, no. I never thought about it,” your sarcastic tone was harsher than you intended, but it felt good.
If he was going to be mad at you for whatever reason, then so be it. But you had every right to be just as angry at him for giving you the cold shoulder.
“This is serious, Y/N.”
“You know what, Spencer? You have some nerve acting like you care about me all of a sudden. You have no right to order me around like you’re my father. Especially since you’ve been passive aggressive with me all damn week.”
With that, the plan was set.
And you went in.
“Remember, Y/N,” came Emily’s voice in your invisible earpiece, “If you encounter our unsub, we have to catch him in the act. It’s very likely he will attack you and try to hurt you, you know that right?”
You trailed a finger around the lip of your tumbler, looking around the mostly empty bar before answering.
“I’m aware. I’ll be alright.”
“Okay. Just act like a normal young woman out having a night out. We know he’s picked up all his victims here.”
“Got it.”
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Agent Y/LN,” you heard.
You turned around, seeing Ethan stroll up to you, a sly grin on his face.
“Well hello there,” you grinned, leaning against the bar, “And please, call me Y/N.”
“Y/N,” he said trying out the name, “Might I say you look outstanding tonight.”
You smiled down at the deep teal ruched dress you had donned for the evening. It was a simple dress with thin spaghetti straps and a deep plunging neckline, showing off more of your breasts than you ever had at work. It fit on your body perfectly, hugging your curves and highlighting them. A pair of strappy, gold, stilettos were the only accessory you’d paired with it.
“Thank you. I’ve been anxious to hear you play.”
“Where’s Reid? Did he not come with you?” Ethan asked.
“Oh, he’s around,” you replied coyly.
Just outside, down the street sat Luke, Rossi, Emily and Spencer in an undercover van, watching the entire thing on their monitors.
The styrofoam cup in Spencer’s hand crumpled from his grip on it as he watched the scene unfold before him. Thankfully, he’d already finished his coffee earlier.
Rossi glanced at the cup then to Luke, with a raised brow.
“You okay there Reid?” Luke asked, knowingly.
“I’m fine,” he gritted out.
“Right,” Rossi drawled, clearly not convinced.
“Isn’t that your childhood friend?” Emily asked.
Yup,” Spencer said and nothing else.
“I saved you a seat at the front, just like I said I would,” Ethan said.
Spencer’s blood boiled when he saw Y/N’s hand on Ethan’s arm. She was doing that thing she did when she flirted: that cute half smile and a peek up through her lashes.
He’d seen it before many times. It was just one of the many things he’d noticed about her before.
“I’ll personally escort you.”
Ethan wrapped an arm around her waist, leading her towards the stage. They were briefly off camera for a moment and Spencer couldn’t help but feel the jealousy tugging at him. He wouldn’t even be in this position if—well it wasn’t important right now.
They appeared back on camera, near the stage. He sat her at one of the tables at the front.
“I’ll try hard not to mess up. It’s a bit nerve wracking when you have such a beautiful girl in the audience to cheer you on.”
Spencer fought the urge to roll his eyes.
Y/N actually giggled in response.
“Reid, you’re seconds away from snapping that pencil in half,” Rossi said.
He peered down, not even realizing he’d picked up a pencil to worry in his hands.
“Anything you’d like to share?” asked Rossi.
Spencer looked at the three expectant faces staring back at him and grimaced.
“Not particularly,” he grumbled.
“Reid’s just mad that his friend is making moves on his girl,” Luke stated, nonchalantly.
“She’s not my girl,” Spencer replied.
“Dude, come on. We all know that you like her and just refuse to make a move.”
Spencer glanced at Rossi and Emily who seemed in agreement to Luke’s statement. A glance at the monitors showed that nothing exciting was happening anyway, so there was no way to avoid this conversation with his teammates.
“It’s like a game of chess,” Rossi said, steepling his fingers together.
“What is?” Spencer asked.
“You and Y/N,” he replied, “But it’s like you’re both stuck in a stalemate waiting for the other to make a move.”
He had no reply to that. What was there to say? Rossi was right and it was all his own damn fault.
“Take this as a lesson, kid,” Rossi advised.
“A lesson how?”
“Let this be your motivation.”
-
Ethan had left you since he was up next.
You sat at the table, sipping on your drink when you heard an unfamiliar voice to your right.
“Looks like you’re awfully lonely tonight.”
You turned to see an average looking man dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. He seemed out of place in such a casual outfit. That didn’t qualify him as the unsub though.
“Maybe I like to be alone?”
That stopped the guy in his tracks. He quite literally backpedaled and left you alone again. You heard a muffled snort in your earpiece.
“You sure know how to tell ‘em,” Luke scoffed.
“Yeah, well, if our unsub is picking up women with lines that bad, we’re in even more trouble than we realized,” you muttered.
You knew from the profile that this unsub was full of himself and egocentric. He would have to be smooth enough to actually lure a woman back with him.
“We’ll keep watching,” Emily said.
You sat alone in peace as Ethan played. He was rather good and you had to say you were impressed.
Your drink eventually disappeared and when you caught Ethan’s eye, you held up your glass just slightly, nodding towards the bar so he knew you were getting a refill. You stood, heading towards the bar, deciding you’d just go for a simple water. You were on the job, after all.
“I’ll take a water, please,” you told the bartender.
He was young, maybe early 30’s with dark hair. He seemed put together, even for a bartender. His outfit was neat and mess free and not a hair was out of place.
“For a beauty like you, you should have a drink, it’s on the house. It’s my specialty.”
He leaned forward to you, giving you a sly wink, as he reached for a glass without even hearing your answer.
“No, that’s okay, really.”
“Oh come on. One drink won’t hurt. I make the best drinks in the city,” he said.
Something in your mind was trying to piece together, but you couldn’t get it to completely form. Shaking it off, you reluctantly relented.
“Okay, I’ll take one then.”
He mixed the drink, poured it in the glass and slid it towards you.
“Now tell me that isn’t the best drink you’ve ever had.”
You took a sip. It was too strong for your taste but you smiled anyway.
“It’s very good,” you lied.
“So, have you heard about these weird ax murders happening around here?” he questioned, wiping the bar.
“Mhm,” you hummed, “Scary stuff.”
“It’s amazing these deadbeat feds can’t seem to catch him,” he shook his head, as if it were a real tragedy.
Neurons in your mind were sparking and there was something about him that was setting you on edge.
“What did you say your name was, again?” you smiled, flirtatiously.
“I didn’t.”
His grin was icy.
Red flags were going up. If he wasn’t your unsub, then this guy surely wasn’t someone to mess with.
“Oh my bad,” you giggled, playing the part of a flirty, young woman, just there for some fun.
“Anyway, all I gotta say is, is that this guy is really proving a point.”
“How so?” you asked.
“You just gotta give the ax to some people,” he replied, slamming his palm down on the bar top, making you jump, “You know what I mean?”
You nodded, seeming interested, but goosebumps were forming on your skin. It was too much to be a coincidence that this guy wasn’t the unsub and he sure had the ego to match the profile.
“Oh excuse me,” you said, reaching for your phone in your purse, pretending like you were getting a phone call, “It’s my boss. She can’t leave me alone even on a night out.”
You smiled apologetically and put the phone to your ear.
“Hello? Yeah, just a minute, I can’t hear you.”
You covered your other ear as if you were trying to hear as you headed towards one of the side doors.
Once you were out of the building, you pulled your phone away, hitting the speed dial for Emily.
“Prentiss.”
“Emily, it’s me. Did you hear any of-”
Before you could finish your question, you felt a hand over your mouth and you were jerked backwards. You kicked and screamed in tandem as your phone hit the pavement and you were dragged back into the darkened alley.
-
“Y/N? Y/N?!” Spencer yelled, panicked eyes looking at the others.
“Everyone move. Now. We believe the suspect has a federal agent,” Emily barked into her walkie talkie.
“Cover the parameter. We have no idea which direction he could’ve taken her,” Luke added over the radio.
Spencer was out of the door before anyone could stop him.
“REID! REID!”
He heard Rossi yell out after him, but he didn’t stop running.
If that son of a bitch dared to hurt a hair on Y/N’s head, he was going to leave here tonight in a body bag instead of handcuffs.
Spencer would make damn sure he’d see to it.
Your back hit the brick wall, the nearby streetlight hitting something metal just right that it gleamed for a split second.
Your heart stopped when you saw the blade of a hatchet in the bartender’s hands.
“I knew the feds had been around here snooping for me,” he sneered.
“How?”
You tried to act cool. This was part of your job, to be in dangerous situations. But truth be told, you were terrified.
“Your little boyfriend Ethan mentioned seeing you and your partner here the other day asking around about me. Little did he know he was really doing me a favor by letting me in on that little piece of gossip.”
Ethan. He had just gotten back from a tour of the world. He was innocent in all this, yet somehow he still ended up mixed up in it.
“He’s not my boyfriend,” you scowled, wriggling against his grasp.
He held you tight with one arm across your neck and shoulders, his arm almost to the point of choking you. You had to stall, had to do something. Where was Emily and the team?
“Where were you that day anyway? I never saw you here.”
“That’s because it was my day off. Lucky break huh?” he snorted, “Besides, I was in search of victim number five.”
Lillie Newton. She was victim number five. She had a name, she wasn’t just a number.
Anger boiled within you. Pure hatred for someone as evil as this man that stood before you.
“Why? Why do it? Were you just trying to be another copycat?”
“You know, one of the things said about the Axeman of New Orleans was that his crimes were mostly ethnically motivated. He killed mainly Italian-Americans or Italian immigrants. For some reason, he must’ve hated them. I found it...inspiring. Of course, I have nothing against the Italians. Unless they’re women, that is.”
“Oh so that’s it? You hate women? Talk about typical psychopath 101,” you spat.
A sharp sting came across your cheek as he slapped you, hard. Hard enough to bring tears to your eyes.
“Listen here, bitch. I’d watch my mouth if I were you, because this baby?” he lifted up his machete for you to see, “This can do a lot of damage. I can’t wait to strike it into you and chop you up so your FBI friends won’t even be able to recognize you.”
You swallowed hard. Your brain was scrambling for a way to escape. You were just about ready to kick him in the groin when he was suddenly yanked away from you, his hard grip leaving your body.
You blinked quickly, not understanding what had just happened until you saw Spencer a few feet away, punching the guy. It wasn’t just one punch either. Two, then three came. You bounded into action then.
“Spencer! Spencer, stop!”
You tried pulling him away as the rest of your team came running into the alleyway. He managed to get one more hit in before you successfully pulled him away and Luke had pulled the unsub up, slapping cuffs on him faster than you realized he even could.
Spencer grabbed you and pulled you close, holding you tight. His head went into the crook of your neck as he clung to you, all of his apparent fear and worry being transmitted from him to you through the hug. No matter what tiff you both may have been in the middle of, he still cared about you.
“I was so scared something happened to you,” he mumbled.
He pulled back, looking over you, assessing you to see if you had any injuries.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. I promise.”
His finger brushed your cheek lightly and you winced.
“Did he hit you?!”
“Slapped me, but I’m okay. It’s just a little sore,” you told him.
“You might have a nasty bruise there in a few days.”
“Least it’s just a bruise, huh?” you smiled a tiny bit.
“Yeah.”
He was gazing directly at you as if no one else were around, as if there wasn’t a bustle of activity around you. In that moment, it was just the two of you.
“Spence.”
You both turned to see Emily, motioning for him, needing his help.
Spencer let go of your arms, stepping back a bit.
“I’ll talk to you later, okay?”
With a nod, you watched him head in Emily’s direction. It had been a long day. A long week actually. But the murderer had been caught and there would be justice for the poor families who had lost their daughters.
That wasn’t all though.
Something had seemed to shift between you and Spencer. Sort of like a chess piece in it’s hesitant movement to another square.
By the time you’d handed over the unsub to the local precinct so he could be their problem, it was well past midnight.
Everyone had been way too exhausted to even think of boarding the jet tonight, so it was mutually decided that they’d spend one more night in New Orleans and head home tomorrow. Everyone had gone their separate ways once back at the hotel.
You headed to your room, managing to score an ice pack for your sore cheek. Unfortunately, after all the excitement, there was no time to talk to Spencer and he’d left the precinct before you had anyway. You made a mental note to check in on him tomorrow and maybe even see if things were okay between you two.
You’d changed out of the dress and into more comfortable clothes—sweatpants and a t-shirt. You were sitting at the small table in your room, icing your cheek and pretty much about to fall asleep when there was a knock at your door. Sitting the ice pack down, you walked to the door, opening it. You were surprised to see Spencer standing on the other side.
Before you had the chance to say anything, he grabbed your face and kissed you.
After your brief initial shock, your lips moved with his so fluidly it seemed natural, like you did this every day.
Minutes may have passed, or it might just have been seconds as you kissed him back, your hands naturally finding a spot to rest against his chest.
You were so stunned when he pulled away, that it took a moment for you to realize he had said something.
“Huh?” you asked, still dazed.
“I asked if I could come in,” he repeated.
“Oh, yeah, of course.”
You stepped aside and let him in, closing the door behind him. Your head was still reeling from the kiss as you turned around and saw him sit down on your bed, his hands running through his hair.
“Come here,” he whispered.
You walked over to him, standing in front of where he sat.
“I’m so sorry,” he began.
Your confusion deepened. Was he sorry about the kiss? About you getting hurt? About being mad?
He said nothing else as he wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close to him and holding you tight.
“When I saw the unsub had you…” he mumbled into your neck, trailing off as his voice cracked.
You pulled out of his embrace to look at him. You now stood in between his legs, even closer than you had been before, your body mere inches from his.
“I was so afraid I might never see you again. Suddenly, me being angry at you was the least important thing in the world.”
“Why were you mad? If I did something I’m so sorry, I-”
“Shh, no,” he mumbled, his finger covering your lips gently to silence you, “It was my own fault, I’m so sorry.”
You waited silently, seeing if he was going to elaborate. His eyes closed, his expression looking pained and even a bit embarrassed.
“I was jealous.”
“Jealous?” you questioned, your brows furrowed, not understanding.
“Of Ethan flirting with you,” he sighed, “And you flirting back.”
“I,” you paused, your mind racing, not being able to piece everything together quick enough, “I was just being nice to him, then just playing the part earlier. Why would you be jealous?”
He gave a half laugh, almost a humorless one.
“Because I’m crazy about you, Y/N,” he whispered, his gaze finally meeting yours.
His hand cupped the side of your face, his other hand resting lightly on your waist. You didn’t move from his touch nor did you make a move to push his hands away.
“And seeing you with someone else made me see red. Just the thought of you being someone else’s and not mine because I’d been too scared and stubborn, locked in this chess game, if you will, with you, not making a move. I was afraid I had been too late and I was mad at myself.”
“I’m not interested in Ethan. I only have eyes for you,” your eyes slid to his lips, unable to stop yourself.
You were still thinking of the way his lips had felt against yours. The softness of them, the passion in the kiss, the way his hands had cupped your face and held on firmly like he himself was afraid the moment was just a fluke.
“It’s always been that way.”
Your voice was barely a whisper now as your eyes slid closed and your lips found his again.
This time, the kiss was more heated. Your feelings for one another had finally been laid on the table, igniting a need to act on them.
Your hand tangled in his curls as you kissed him back fervently, suddenly feeling like you couldn’t get enough of him. You had spent years not knowing what kissing him would be like and now it felt like you were simply making up for lost time.
You smiled gently against his lips when he moaned into the kiss. Apparently, he was just as eager for your touch against him, as you were for his against you.
His hands reached for the hem of your top, pulling away to pull it up and over your head. His tongue moved out and over his lips slowly, his eyes taking in your newly exposed skin. Your own hands pulled at his loosened tie, dropping it once it left his body.
Spencer’s mouth met your neck, leaving soft kisses down it as your fingers fumbled with the buttons of his shirt. The simple task seemed so much harder as you were distracted by the feel of his lips on your skin.
In one fell swoop, he’d picked you up and turned, tossing you in quite a gentle manner against the mattress of your hotel bed. His hand ran over your exposed stomach, his kisses moving lower. You chewed on your bottom lip as you watched him, unable to control the growing desire forming between your legs.
You were so caught up in the sensation, it didn’t even register what he had been doing until you felt the slight tug of your waistband being pulled downwards. His fingers gripped the material and pushed it down over your raised hips until it was completely off.
You wasted no time in ridding him of his own pants as well.
Left in only your undergarments, you and Spencer laid practically skin to skin, taking a moment just to enjoy one another. He kissed you again, his slight scruff tickling your face, while his hands roamed your body.
You, also, took your sweet time exploring the new found territory of his bare skin underneath your hands. They ran over his back, his chest, his arms, his sides before finding their way back to his face, your lips moving in a fluid dance with his own.
He reached behind you, unhooking your bra, pulling the straps down until the item had completely left your body. You were almost positive he held back a groan as he took in your naked top half.
“Fuck, you’re beautiful,” he whispered.
Your legs inadvertently clenched at his cursing. It wasn’t often he did it, but something told you that in bed it was a good possibility that he could be a completely different person.
His hands cupped each breast, his lips kissing your throat as he massaged them. His fingertips briefly moved over your peaked nipples, making you moan softly.
Spencer wasted no time though, his touch quickly retreated downwards to the only item left on your body. His fingers hooked into the waistband of your panties and pulled them off, leaving you completely exposed and turned on beneath him.
Maybe it was a mixture of how close you came to death tonight and your feelings for him, but you didn’t want this moment to end. You wanted to hang on to it forever. That’s why you took your time, hands pushing off his underwear, your eyes meeting his.
It was like he could read your thoughts. Being as close as you two had been previous to this, it wasn’t surprising, but knowing you so well in this instance was just on a whole other level of mind blowing. He nodded, wanting to enjoy this for as long as he could too.
His hand covered yours, interlocking your fingers together as he pushed into you. The new feeling of him inside you was overwhelming but really good.
Your hands stayed laced together as he kissed you and moved within you. Your body met his rhythm and soon instead of two, your bodies moved as one.
Breaking the kiss, your head fell back against the pillow as you moaned. You couldn’t wrap your mind around the fact that he felt so incredible. His teeth bared into his bottom lip as he gazed down at you, his desire written plainly on his face.
“Spencer,” you whimpered, pulling your legs up his sides, allowing him a deeper access.
His movements quickened as your pleasure heightened, fulfilling the need for more. You couldn’t help but smile, even as you moaned, at the curl that fell over his brow, moving with each thrust.
“God, Y/N,” Spencer groaned, his forehead falling against yours, eyes closing, “Fuck.”
You briefly registered the other noises in the room besides both of your moans: the bed creaking and the headboard hitting the wall.
“Spence,” you mumbled, whimpering as he hit a sensitive spot, “You're gonna wake up the entire team.”
“Let them hear,” he grunted, “Let them know who you belong to.”
“Whatever you want,” you mumbled, pulling him towards you once again.
Your fingers dug into his back as your high built deep within you. He moaned against your lips, his hands gripping your sides as you both moved frantically, desperate to reach complete ecstasy.
“Fuck, Spencer,” you moaned, your noises suddenly higher in pitch and volume, “Fuck, fuck, fuck.”
He kissed you as you came apart, the fire in your veins shooting through you as quick as lightning. Luckily, his kiss muffled most of your loud moan.
He buried his face in your neck as he soon followed, his own moans filling your ears, much to your delight.
Your fingers tangled in the back of his hair as you panted, starting to come down from the high. His body was slick against yours as he finally turned his face to yours, kissing you once again.
The cool air of the hotel room hit your sweaty skin, cooling it gently, but your insides still felt red hot, both in reaction to the sex and the fact that it was Spencer, the fact that he was as crazy about you as you were him.
The fact that both of you no longer played this complicated game you’d inadvertently been involved in for so long.
It was only after he’d stilled, his body still flush against your skin that he smiled one of his heart stopping grins, before finally speaking.
“Checkmate.”
