。・゚゚・ Socstudies: Sociology 103 ・゚゚・。
Tumblr media
.⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。
Due to unexpected demand, I'm picking this series back up! Today's post is: Why study sociology?
.⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。
。・゚゚・Why choose any subject?・゚゚・。
I think first of all it's important to think about why you would choose to study any subject, as prioritising your criteria can be really helpful. Here are some examples, but you will likely have your own too:
it leads to a high paying job
it's interesting / you enjoy or will enjoy studying it
you have to study it to get the job you want (high paying or not)
you have the pre-requisites (unfortunately sometimes this will rule out a subject)
Now that you've ranked these let's walk through them.
1x Luke's coffee cup earnt for making it this far!
。・゚゚・Can sociology lead to a high paying job?・゚゚・。
It depends! Sorry! Sociology is quite broad which means it can be applied to other fields that aren't directly sociological. For example, having a good knowledge of people and how they interact can be helpful in jobs such as a consultant or PR manager, but you don't need a sociology degree to do these.
1x Luke's coffee cup earnt for making it this far!
。・゚゚・Will you enjoy studying sociology?・゚゚・。
Of course as a second year sociology student I'll say yes but this is up to you! Our classes cover literally anything (one of my highest grading essays talked about kpop and stan culture) so you can really tailor your classes and assignments to what interests you, since absolutely anything involving people can be related to sociology. This means that class discussions get really interesting since people bring all sorts of examples and case studies to the table. An added bonus: if you're shy or not a lover of group discussions, you'll definitely have something to say in sociology since you're a part of what is being studied - you can just relate your own experiences or observations to the class material! You're like a walking textbook!
1x Luke's coffee cup earnt for making it this far!
。・゚゚・Do any jobs require sociology?・゚゚・。
The most obvious one is a sociologist but other jobs list sociology as part of potential entry requirements, such as social worker or teacher. To be honest, a lot of jobs just require you to have a degree (other than lawyers, doctors etc, but you can always to conversion courses or postgrad to do that, and having a sociological background will help with that!). It's all about transferrable skills. As you're studying such a wide scope of things, you will likely discover a certain area that you're super interested in (such as me with criminology and internet culture).
1x Luke's coffee cup earnt for making it this far!
。・゚゚・Are there any other reasons to study sociology?・゚゚・。
Most people probably say this about their subject, but I do genuinely think it should be a requirement to take at least a few sociology classes. There's been so many times when people have said something that they would have a completely different view of if they had studied sociology; it completely changed my whole perspective of things.

.⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。
Review Questions!
1x Luke's coffee cup earnt for each correct answer! (and half a cup for attempting!)
What jobs could sociology potentially lead to? (Doesn't have to be from this list - could do your own research!)
What topics would you like to explore from a sociological perspective? (No right answer... unless you're lying....)
What are four possible reasons to keep in mind while choosing a subject?
.⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。⋆。˚☽˚。⋆..⋆。⋆☂˚。
Thank you for taking part! Exchange your cups here, view the previous lesson here, and view the syllabus here!

Artists creating specifically to sell and trading off (some of) their own style to do it, activists begging for attention and shares and media coverage because they aren't being paid enough attention, UNWRA desperate for donations, the percentage of people who don't mask in 2024 compared to deaths and disabilities, ppl who need to be convinced to vote with principles that save lives and that genocide is unacceptable, how a living wage or UBI is believed to be "unrealistic" despite the trillions in shareholder investment accounts.
....I'm starting to think Mainstream People™ fucking suck, ngl. In fact, dare I say that Mainstream People are the biggest obstacle to progress now.
Malcolm X said it was the white liberal as did a lot of other revolutionaries and thinkers.
I, however, think anyone who can hold their own comfort over someone else's suffering is the problem.
Why are the rest of us constantly begging and shouting and changing ourselves and our bodies in an effort to make them care about us? To make them see us? To give us rights? To bless us with the support needed to make a living?
Same shit, different generations. And idk about y'all, but I would love to be the last generations who ever had to hate themselves to survive.

kavetham different meeting au where theres a sort of fair for people who want to study in the akademiya to get to know each darshan, yknow those college fairs? where they talk to you about universities and courses? like that. and the kshahrewar and the haravatat booths are next to each other and kaveh and alhaitham are responsible for them and despite having just met they bicker with each other all. day. every future akademiya student that passes through one of their booths might as well have passed through both because they will not stop arguing about which darshan is better and which one the people talking to them should go to. its a very amusing experience to all involved except for kaveh and alhaitham themselves. and anyways. nuisances to lovers

I changed colleges to study visual arts. dropped sociology after five years and being close to graduating, and yes it's as painful and humiliating as it sounds. but at this point if it swims like a duck (an artist) and quacks like a duck (an artist) the only thing left to do is to surrender to obvious destiny

How I’m Planning on Working Through Executive Dysfunction for College
(As a sociology major)
Videos. TV. Movies. Applying learned concepts to film & pop culture. Watching shows, documentaries, & videos that depict history, social concepts & theories.
Social media. Creating content & gaining a following to (hopefully) motivate myself into studying more in order to produce more content for others [the idea that I’m not studying for myself, rather I’m studying for other people, helps me]. Doom scrolling while also applying social & other learned concepts to the content I see. Following sociologists & related content on social media to learn while I doom scroll. After all, I’m a SOCI(al)ology major.
Not pushing it. I will not sit & hyperfixate for hours on end to the point I have no mental energy to accomplish any other task that day.
Studying where I want to study. Outside? Kitchen? Bed? Couch? In the car? Park? It doesn’t matter. Be where you want to be. Studying is studying no matter where it’s happening.
Designated days & hours for nothingness. Designating one or two days a week, and a few hours a day as “wide open space & time” to do anything at all, even if it’s doom scrolling. No studying or school work allowed during these times.
Podcasts & educational background noise. Even if you’re tuning it out, important points might still stick out & be remembered.
Caffeine. Caffeine. Caffeine.
Taking meds regularly 🙃
Making a habit out of getting dressed after waking up. Then you feel like there’s something important to be done. Don’t stay in pajamas all day. Even if it’s just wearing shoes.
Don’t force yourself to be physically uncomfortable. For chronic pain, if where you’re sitting is becoming uncomfortable, move somewhere more comfortable. Forcing myself to continue to be uncomfortable because it’s “where I’m supposed to study” only pushes me into an executive dysfunction & shame spiral. If that’s the same for anyone else reading this, don’t force yourself to be uncomfortable. Sit somewhere else. Lay down & listen to educational content instead if you need to.
Go. Outside. In. The. Morning. SEE that the sun is out & it’s day time. FEEL the sun in the morning for 5 minutes. Acknowledge that half the world is awake right now. Feel the busyness & activity in the air.
DO NOT SET EXPECTATIONS FOR YOURSELF. Set LOOSE guidelines. Do not set a time or page limit for yourself. Study until the playlist is over. Read until your food is done cooking. Listen to a podcast sometime before 1pm. Set guidelines like this. Do not organize your day by actual time & time limits. (got this idea from a post titled something about “you can’t time the boiling point of water”)
Motivational music & speeches. Forcing yourself to open & play the playlist will be the hardest part. Once it’s open, it’s all up from there.
A reason to study. What motivates you to do this? Why are you doing it? Who for? Out of spite? Carry that. To fix the world? Carry that. Expose failed structures? Carry it. For money? CARRY. IT. Make a vision board for your “why” & set it as your phone Lock Screen.
That’s all I got for now. If anyones reading this, keep in mind, I haven’t tried these yet so idk if they will work & I know they won’t work for everyone. This is just my plan on how I hope to overcome my executive dysfunction to study successfully.

my friend harriet hasn't been on tumblr in months but I sent them like a dozen goncharov posts and an hour or so later she sent me back like 1.6k words of plot outlining. so for your reading pleasure:
characters:
goncharov (lo straniero / the stranger); mob family boss (40s)
katya; goncharov’s wife
andrey
sofia marelli ("cousin" of andrey)
ice pick joe marelli (sofia's husband)
mario ambrosini (goncharov's right hand man)
goncharov: has been mob boss for a while now, family business has flourished under him but he is alone. he is the stranger because he estranges everyone else, he is closed off and intimidating. he cant trust anyone and lives in constant wariness that he will be betrayed. he wants to retire and finally settle down and be happy with his wife katya and finally have a family (but he has an unrealistic idea of happy since he is so mal-adjusted). goncharov puts on a mask of indifference to hide that he feels too much. he was always the stranger because he could not connect with anyone out of fear of betrayal. when he does finally trust, he is betrayed.
mario: is fiercely loyal to the Family and thus goncharov, respects his boss and wants the best for the mob. he comes from a loyal line of lieutenants or whatever, and it is hinted that he would be unable to betray goncharov for perhaps some deeper reason. he does not want goncharov to retire due to his success as boss, and he is suspicious of andrey
katya and goncharov: met fairly young, whirlwind romance/passion, set up by families to marry. they could have had a love but since their marriage was forced, katya became resentful and goncharov distant, and her resentment only grew with goncharov's distance.
they are seen as a celebrity high-society power couple and katya is described as the only one who knows "the stranger" but at home, they never speak. he goes to his office and she drinks in the sitting room and watches television.
katya: goncharov places his concept of idealized marriage and domesticity upon her but does not Know her at all. she doesn't do any housework or cooking. she is in charge of throwing lots of functions, soirees, parties as they are a socialite couple. katya may have once held affection for goncharov and still somewhat wishes for what could have been, but she does not love him/hates him, and wants to be free of goncharov. also, unlike goncharov, she does not want children, though it never was an issue since he was never attentive. katya is not directly involved with Business, but is acutely aware of all the going ons. she is great at and willing to use her charisma and "womanness" to get her way
sofia and ice pick joe: joe was once a fairly reputable member of the mob, but his drinking and gambling developed into a problem and he made many mistakes. he was demoted, and is a bad husband. sofia is seen as a harlot and also has a bad reputation. she hates her husband and wants him dead, which is why she becomes involved with andrey and katya (though she seems to have a strong bond with katya - both have bad husbands). sofia is a bit unhinged and desperate. not much pride left.
andrey: "cousin" of sofia, up and coming member of mob who seemed to pop up out of nowhere (maybe moved to italy from the states?). he comes off as charismatic, handsome, smart/shrewd, and slightly goofy (seems not completely perfect), and he is slightly younger than goncharov.
goncharov eventually sees in andrey a confidant and a better version of himself that he lost. however, opposite of goncharov, andrey may come off as expressive but he struggles with not feeling much attachment to anything. andrey is shown through the movie to not get his hands dirty, coming off as weak and not suited for the gritty parts of the job. perhaps he also comes off as a germophobe, always wearing gloves and washing his hands, and not liking to shake hands or touch people. he also seems to hate blood. his aversion starts off as seeming to be evidence of andrey's "weakness," and goodness, and a reason why he is not meant for this business/is better than goncharov. overtime, it starts to seem pathological and sinister, and a representation of andrey's need for control and clinical nature. we eventually find out he does not shy away from violence and is ruthless, but does not like to be directly involved. he makes an exception for goncharov
plot:
-katya's father dies, which makes goncharov acutely aware of his own mortality and also has him reevaluate his marriage (since her dad was one of the arrangers). goncharov decides he wishes to quit and finally settle down, and mario is not supportive, and wishes that goncharov fix the recent problems. (B plot problem is that there have been disruptions in business and talk of an inside job, which has goncharov even more paranoid)
- katya throws a dinner party, and invites sofia and andrey. goncharov is aware of sofia, and she introduces andrey as her cousin. katya talks up andrey as a new talent, and encourages goncharov to take him on for a personal job. goncharov is reluctant, as he trusts no one, but katya uses her knowledge of goncharov's desires to quit and to better their relationship to suggest that he reconsider. it is also implied that since andrey is new to the business, he could not be the traitor.
- sofia and katya are shown to be in cahoots and quite close. they plan to frame ice pick joe as the traitor so that goncharov will have him removed. katya will suggest that andrey be delegated to take care of the problem.
- mario does not trust andrey, sofia, or even katya (though he respects katya). he persistently tries to persuade goncharov that andrey is bad news and that goncharov needs to set down a heavy hand and take control of business like he used to. goncharov disregards him and listens to katya, having andrey direct men to dispose of ice pick joe.
- andrey continues to gain the trust of goncharov, goncharov makes more attempts to be better with katya, who seems to be receptive. Business seems to be doing better now that ice pick joe is gone. things seems to be going well for goncharov, who thinks he could seriously drop out of the business, have a family, and finally trust again. he even muses giving the business to andrey (which mario rails against). by this point, andrey just seems like he is a pawn in katya and sofia's scheme, and we think that he really does care about goncharov.
- mario is suspicious about ice pick joe and andrey anh starts investigating. He finds out sofia's role and confronts her at her home and is gonna report to goncharov. sofia murders him (bludgeoning and stab with heel?). she calls katya while freaking out, katya tries calming her down. there is a knock on the door and they think they have been caught, and its andrey at the door (which the viewer knows, and thinks that its over for the girls; katya seems defiant and stands protectively in front of sofia). they open the door and andrey is completely unbothered, just ticked by the blood/mess, and its revealed that he is part of their schemes. he gives orders to get the plan back on track.
- mario is missing and rumored to have been a traitor, business seems to be falling apart again, and katya is acting hot and cold after things seemed to be improving. goncharov is at his lowest thus far, as everything seems to be out of control and no one can be trusted. he begins to fall apart (mirror scene- cant recognize himself, overwhelmed with emotion), and goncharov only retains trust for andrey, and andrey starts taking over some duties with goncharov wigging out
- need some sort of catalyst for last part; something that leads to goncharov trying to work again and sofia being caught
- bridge scene: katya races after goncharov after sofia is caught (and killed?), and gives her betrayal. she had been put together and seemed in control the whole movie, even when sofia broke down during the mario murder, but is now disheveled and crying. goncharov is dumbstruck and says that he wanted to have a life with her, and she calls him an idiot and says that was never possible, he ruined her life. she did not love him and maybe once upon a time she could have, but that ship has long since set sail. they could never have a loving husband and wife relationship partly due to the meshing of The Job/crime bosses and their home life. it could never be real when balancing between the two roles. she tries to shoot him but misses, and collapses. goncharov tells her that he never wants to see her again or else, and leaves.
- last scene: goncharov is in his office at night, alone except for andrey. the scene is intimate, and goncharov is sat his desk completely defeated, head down. andrey is there comforting and saying what happened with katya and sofia and mario. he is the only one that goncharov has now, and he serves them both brandy. something (unsure what, some slip up) tips Goncharov off (maybe to do with andrey's aversion to blood/mess, idk), and goncharov realizes that andrey was also in on it. andrey admits that he grew to be fond of goncharov against his own expectations, which was unexpected, but that this is all business. he takes off his gloves at some point, and it looks like he is cradling/caressing goncharov's head/hair, but you zoom out and he has a gun to goncharov. he shoots him. end.

bokuto majored in nutrition.
he never planned on what he wanted to major in at college until he met hinata. he saw what happened to him at nationals and wanted to learn more about the importance of taking care of yourself (& so he could help his fellow players).
he loves reading up on what can fuel him to be stronger, to be a better athlete. he loves finding out what kinds of foods energize you because the last thing he wants to be before a game is sluggish.
there’s a lot of chemistry involved with his major so he always loves to talk kuroo about it. they have spent hours going over the different things bokuto has learned in class. bokutos favorite way to learn and get better is to teach it to others.
when he met iwa, he wanted to talk his ear off and trade the knowledge of what they’ve learned about being in the best shape. this was something he was really passionate about. and once bokuto is passionate about something, nothing is impossible for him.

One thing is that as I do more therapy and more fully accept that I went through a truly fucking traumatic childhood I only get more passionate about the idea of youth liberation. A lot of people think this is totally kooky, and I know because I have gotten into many arguments about it at this point in my life lol. But I truly think that real liberation would end like 98% of childhood abuse. Our culture of allowing parents near total control over their child's life until the day they turn 18 practically sets parents up to traumatize their children. Like if we adopted the mindset that children are primarily People who just have significantly less life experience than the average and therefore need extra help, compassion, & protection - wouldn't you think children would have a much better experience of the world? Instead of publicly regarding then as trophies, pets, nuisances, or scapegoats depending on their age and disposition. Surely you remember how that felt, being treated like an object by most adults for nearly two decades! Do you really think it was right for you to feel that way? We can end this madness. But it starts with accepting that children are a socially oppressed class.

Discovered that there is an actual name for this feeling (coined by emile durkheim) and got so excited that I decided to write a research proposal about it! The proposal is for a class but maybe I’ll actually submit it next semester??
I also sent my sister a 9 minute video rambling about it bc I experience this so often and have always wondered about it. And I’ve been trying to pin down my research interests for grad school in a few years so I may have just found a great one I can actually research!
Now I just have to decide what specific event or group of people to study. People usually focus on it in religious settings but I want to look at more mundane, everyday occurrences, like when people at a party scream-sing to mr brightside lol
Anyway if anyone has suggestions please let me know!
