Pro Wrestling Illustrated : APRIL 1996
close-up: THE KID
Part 2
Transcript Below!!!
At 6’2” and 212 pounds, The Kid hardly looks like the typical professional wrestler … But he isn’t typical: the six year veteran is a high-flying, high-risk, aerial artist who has scored several shocking upsets simply because he’s willing to take chances … Spent most of his early years competing for Minneapolis-based Pro Wrestling America … As The Lightning Kid, he won the PWA light heavyweight title in both 1990 and 1991 … He also held the PWA tag team title (with Jerry Lynn) and the PWA TV title … Moved to texas and won the Global Wrestling Federation junior heavyweight title twice in the second half of ‘91 … Later accepted an offer to wrestle in Japan and battled such superstars as Jushin Liger, El Samurai, Ultimo Dragon, and The Great Muta … Lost most of those matches, but gained valuable experience … arrived in the WWF in April 1993 hardly made a splash … Lost his debut match to Louie Spicolli … Also lost to mid-carders such as Doink the Clown and Mr. Hughes, The Kid scored one of the biggest WWF upsets ever by pinning Razor Ramon on May 17 WWF Monday Night Raw … Kid seemed as shocked as everyone in the building … From that point on, fans called him the 1-2-3 Kid … Also pinned Terry Taylor and Ted DiBiase on several occasions … Just as impressive were two victories over former AWA World Champion Rick Martel … Jerry Lawler started poking fun at him on segments of “King’s Court” … Moved up as high as fourth in the WWF ratings in 1993 … Was pinned by Irwin R. Schyster at SummerSlam ‘93 … Lost by countout to Marty Jannetty in a thrilling match on August 31, 1993, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Kid was injured when he misfired on a daring dive and hit a steel railing. Jannetty helped him back to the dressing room … Went in a slump after suffering a series of embarrassing losses to Doink … Also lost to Bastion Booger because of interference by Johnny Polo … Polo pushed Kid off the top rope, leading to the pin … Helped protect Ramon from an attack by Schyster, Diesel, Adam Bomb, and Martel after Ramon won his first Intercontinental title, on September 17, 1993 … At the 93’ Survivor Series, he teamed with Jannetty, Ramon, and Randy Savage to defeat IRS, Diesel, Martel, and Bomb … Wrestled well, but made one mistake too many and lost a crucial RAW against Shawn Michaels … Michaels twice power-bombed Kid before Ramon came to his rescue … Won his first major title on January 10, 1994, when he and Jannetty teamed to beat The Quebecers for the WWF World tag team title; Kid pinned Jacques following a flying bodypress from the top rope … Lost the belts back to The Quebecers one week later … Kid stunned Jeff Jarrett in the quater-finals of the 1994 King of the Ring tournament, but was piledrived by “Double-J” three times afterward … There was no doubt as to whether Kid would be ready for the semifinals later that evening, but after a bried delay, he came out and lost a tough match to Owen Hart … Owen went on to win King of the Ring … Had a thrilling match with WWF World champion Bret Hart on July 1, 1994. Kid kicked out of several pin attempts, shocked Bret with a spinning savate kick, but erred by trying a dropkick from the top rope. Bret moved out of the way and Kid landed on his back. Bret won by submission to the “sharpshooter” … In a battle of aerial artists on August 15, 1994, Kid won by disqualification over Owen Hart after Jim Neidhart interfered. Owen then locked Kid in a sharpshooter” for several minutes … Teamed with Ramon, Fatu, Davey Boy Smith, and Sionne to beat Jarrett, Diesel, Neidhart, Owen Hart, and Michaels at the 94’ Survivor Series. The Kid, however, was one of the first wrestlers eliminated … Teamed with newcomer “Man O’ War” Aldo Montoya in matches against The Heavenly Bodies and others … Teamed with Bob “Spark Plugg” Holly to beat Bam Bam Bigekow and Tatanka in a tournament final for the vacant WWF World tag team title at the 95’ Royal Rumble … But glory didn’t last long. One night later in Palmetto, Florida,The Smokin’ Gunns beat The Kid and Holly for the belts …

Borderlands: Skies the Ultimate Treasure Hunter
Skies, Timothy, and Ember work out the next part of the plan and the Vault Hunters bring in a new crew member.

The Handsome Jackpot Part 4
“Moxxi, allow me to introduce Ember.”
Skies points Moxxi’s hologram towards the fiery dancer, who bows respectfully.
“A pleasure, Mad Moxxi,” she says, “you are truly a legend.”
“I know,” Moxxi replies cheekily. “So you found your dancer, Skies. What next?”
“The Vault Hunters are working on finding Ember’s ship to get her tools, which she needs to help us,” Skies explains.
“To do what, exactly?”
“Well, obviously, to uh...” She trails off as she doesn’t know the actual answer, and looks at Ember.
“To burn through the tower’s front door,” Ember replies.
“Yes, of course.”
“And how will you get past those turrets?” Moxxi asks, “I thought only Timothy could move through them.”
“True,” Timothy agrees.
“Well...we can shut them down,” Skies suggests, “we just gotta get down to the station’s core and cut off their power. Only problem, that place is ultra-high security. I remember one of my trips here, Jack had to go down there and he wouldn’t even let me go with him. And you know that’s super weird cause I followed him everywhere. He even had me stay in the bathroom with him once when he had a bad chili dog- it was not a good day.”
“Well, security is why I’m here, right?” Timothy asks.
“Yes, but the control core is even more ultra-high security than the tower,” she explains, “not only do you have the face, voice, and DNA, but you’re also gonna have to really look and act like Jack, including your clothes.”
“What’s wrong with my clothes?” he questions, motioning to his black sweatpants, patchy yellow sweatshirt, and frumpy brown jacket.
“You may have everything else of Jack’s, Timmy, but you don’t have his fashion sense.”
“Nobody has Jack’s fashion sense.”
“That’s true.”
“Why would the control core have such high security?” Moxxi muses, “wouldn’t Jack need maintenance workers to go down there?”
“He took care of all that himself, as far as I know,” Skies replies.
“But why?” she demands, “he must’ve been hiding something. Jack always had another secret and, Skies, you knew all of his secrets.”
“That’s giving me too much credit,” Skies insists, “I figured out a lot of his secrets, yes, but if Jack was hiding something here, I have no idea what it is. Like I’ve said, I’ve only been here a couple times and every time I got super hammered. It’s hard to look for secrets when you’ve got a drink in one hand and a dancer on the other, you know what I mean?”
“Ah, oui,” Ember nods sagely.
“Well, I just hope that whatever secrets are here, Pretty Boy doesn’t get his little hands on them. That will be bad for all of us,” Moxxi says and points demandingly at Skies and Timothy, making them flinch. “So make sure it doesn’t happen.” With that, her hologram disappears and Skies and Timothy sag.
“Oh, she really nails that combo of terror and turn-on, doesn’t she,” Timothy sighs.
“She sure does,” Skies agrees, “anyway, we need to figure out how to get to that core. First off, we’ll need to make you look more like Jack than ever- which means we need his outfit- which means we need a tailor.”
“I can help with that, chérie,” Ember says, “Jacques had a personal tailor in the Market District.”
“Fantastic, easy peasy,” Skies remarks.
“Not quite so easy,” she argues, “he has changed careers, you see. Now he is the mayor of Trashlantis.”
“The mayor of what now?” Timothy questions.
“Many societies started after the lock down,” Ember explains, “Trashlantis is the only remaining one that has not joined Pretty Boy or been destroyed by him.”
“Okay...Trashlantis, huh,” Skies, “alright, no problem. We’ll find this Trashlantis and convince the mayor to help us. We better wait for the Vault Hunters to get back though. I don’t think they’d be too happy with us if we went to a place called ‘Trashlantis’ without them. Speaking of, I should see how they’re doing.”
She grabs her ECHO communicator and calls the Vault Hunters. “Hey, kiddos, how’s it going?”
“I fecking hate bureaucracy,” Zane replies coldly.
“This is why I stopped being an indexing unit,” Fl4K adds, “and my insatiable thirst for murder.”
“Okay,” Skies replies and puts her ECHO away. “Sounds like things are going well. Nothing to do now but wait.”
Skies, Timothy, and Ember settle onto the couch to relax and wait for the Vault Hunters. They don’t relax for long, however, when their ECHOs suddenly chime with a message.
“It is from Pretty Boy,” Ember gasps, “he must’ve sent it to every ECHO in the casino.”
“It’s me!” Timothy exclaims.
The message indeed shows a picture of Timothy, taken from a security camera, with the caption, “WANTED ALIVE,” and a high reward.
“Five million freaking dollars...and eighty-seven cents,” Timothy groans and hangs his head. “Oh my god. Every gangster on this station is going to be hunting for me now. I was just in the crap kiddie pool, and now I’m just doing the breaststroke in the diarrhea deep end! This just...I mean, this really sucks.”
“Don’t worry, Tim Tam,” Skies says, patting his shoulder. “Pretty Boy won’t be able to lay a clammy finger on you without me chopping him into even tinier bits.”
“Oui,” Ember agrees, “and I shall burn those bits to a crisp. We are a team now, after all.”
Timothy sighs and smiles gratefully.
The three of them wait a while longer in their hideout, telling Ember about everything she’s missed on the outside and practising with their guns, when the Vault Hunters finally call Skies.
“We got Ember’s tools,” Amara says.
“Magnifique!” Ember cheers.
“We also met somebody who wants to join the crew,” Moze adds, “he’s a programmer and he says he knows stuff about the casino.”
“Eh, well, I guess we can’t turn someone away who wants to join,” Skies replies reluctantly, “and a programmer could be useful with all the Hyperion security. Alright, bring him back to the hideout and I’ll vet him personally.”
They don’t have to wait long before the Vault Hunters return, leading a man with a blond mullet wearing lots of purple clothes.
“I know you were just on me about my fashion sense, but I’m at least better than this guy, right,” Timothy quietly asks Skies.
“Marginally,” Skies replies then faces the new guy. “Alright, kid, why are you interested in helping us?”
“I’m Freddie!” he replies enthusiastically, “I wanna help the bots! Pretty Boy’s always treating ‘em so poorly and they don’t deserve that. Can I help? Come on, I can program bots! You want Freddie!”
“Freddie’s really setting off my douchebag alarm,” Skies whispers to Timothy, who nods agreeably. Then she says, “alright, Freddie. Your skills may be useful to us. You’re in.”
“Yeah! Freddie!” he cheers.
Skies suppresses the urge to rip out Freddie’s vocal chords and turns to the Vault Hunters. “Alright, now that you guys have retrieved Ember’s tools, we can move on to the next part of our plan. It looks like we’re gonna need another member to join the crew so we’ll be making a trip to Trashlantis.”
“To where now?” Moze questions.
“Sounds unhygienic,” FL4K comments.
“My kinda place,” Zane remarks.
“How do we get there?” Amara asks.
“Oh, Freddie knows how!” Freddie replies, “you can get in through the trash chute in the Market District. It opens once a day when the maintenance bots make their rounds. However, I know that the bots have already made their rounds for the day, cause I’m Freddie and Freddie knows all about the bots. So you won’t be getting in that way.”
Skies groans, pinching the bridge of her nose. “How does that help us?”
“Oh. I guess it doesn’t.”
She growls angrily and Timothy holds her shoulders. “Easy, Skies. We don’t go killing crew members just because they’re annoying.”
“We could set the trash on fire,” Ember suggests, “the maintenance bots will see the smoke and come running.”
“Oooh, you had me at trash fire,” Timothy giggles.
Skies takes a deep breath and claps her hands. “Okay. First, let’s get to the Market District. Then we’ll start a trash fire.”
“I shall join you,” Ember declares, “so that I may spark the magnificent flames!”
“You really like fire, huh,” Timothy remarks.
“Fire solves many things,” she replies.
“Agreed,” Skies adds and points to the door. “Let’s roll, crew! New guy, watch the place. Don’t let anyone in unless it’s us, got it?”
“You can count on Freddie!” Freddie exclaims.
“I sure hope so, for your sake,” Skies mutters under her breath as everyone heads out.

Oscar v4: S a s s y
Oscar v5: nervous around the others, awkward and shy and sweet, sass directed solely towards Ozpin (and Lionheart)
Oscar v6: Afraid, identity crisis, existential crisis, trying to not be hated by everyone, sass on hold. Near end of volume - clever, brave, still awkward n sweet and scared all the time, with just a tiny bit of sass back
Oscar v7: I actually feel like part of the group now, and I've been through a lot. I think I will start being sassy again, as a treat.
Oscar v8: Yeah y’know what? I think I deserve to be a bit fucking sassy rn

I think it be cool if we see Oscar as the person we see use plant dust caz I don't think we seeing it in show
Hello anon-chan! Uhm…I’m not quite sure if there is such thing as “plant dust” in the world of Remnant?
Hold on let me take a quick look. *Looks it up* Well whaddaya know! According to RWBY Wiki, plant dust is indeed a form of dust that exists canonically in the series and it’s stated in the description that plant dust is likely used for farming purposes.
That’s interesting. The closest to thing to any earth-related dust we’ve seen in the main animated series is rock dust. Going back to your question, while I’m not sure about the possibility of Oscar utilizing dust as a weapon, I still wish to stick with the Pinehead headcanon of Oscar using earth-based magic.
Tumblr media
Similar to semblances, dust is meant to replicate the elemental effects of magic which Oscar technically possesses. If it wasn’t for the sillyfact that the showrunners wrote in that Oscar is afraid to use magic due to it allegedly accelerating the effects of his inevitable merge with Ozpin which the little prince has voiced not being emotionally ready for---if it wasn’t for that then I could’ve totally seen Oscar using earth magic; having come from a farming background in an earth-based spring kingdom and continent.
Tumblr media
That’s what I would’ve liked to see. But given how the showrunners keep limiting how much magic Oscar can actually use, I think all us Pineheads can canonically look forward to is Oscar simply beating things with the Long Memory. That’s it. That’s all he’d be able to do now as of V8!
He can’t fully use the little percentage of magic he inherited from Ozma through Ozpin because it quickens the Merge (which is just ridiculous) and he can’t use too much of the built up kinetic energy stored in the cane cause it’d blow everyone to smithereens which is also ridiculous! I mean, why even give him these abilities if you’re just going to redact them later and make Oscar not use them at all moving forward? It seems like a waste of an idea.
All that’s left now is Oscar’s so-called semblance; to which…they BETTER NOT take that back too.
I just…as a proud squiggly Pinehead, I find it sooo increasingly frustrating how the showrunners keep nerfing Oscar at every stage in the most ridiculous ways. Let Oscar be great and powerful, dagnabbit! I’m not just saying that because he’s my favourite, I’m saying it because technically Oscar is supposed to be powerful!
Tumblr media
Him being powerful makes more sense than other certain characters in the show being powerful (*coughsWeisscoughs*).
Not only does he draw inspiration from Princess Ozma---the most powerful magic user in all of Oz in the Wizard of Oz series. But in the context of RWBY, Oscar is the current reincarnation of one of the last wizards in Remnant. The only person who has ever defeated Salem and would’ve ended her reign eons ago if the dynamic dumbasses that are the Gods of Remnant did not curse Salem with immortality and then left her wicked witch ass with that immortality for poor Ozma to clean up without a bloody clue how to revoke it.
Oscar doesn’t have to be brokenly overpoweredbut for Pete’s sake, at least allow him to be strong enough so we can finally move past seeing him just beat shit with a wind-up bulb on a stick! No shade at the Long Memory because I actually think it’s a cool weapon given its history and meaning. It’s just that it’s annoying knowing that Oscar can probably do A LOT more given his abilities yet the writers won’t let him…because PLOT!
If Oscar can’t use magic because of PLOT, then I like concept of him experimenting with the practice of using dust in combat as an alternative to magic.
That could be nice and it could be fitting to see him do this in Vacuo since I think, historically, Vacuo is supposed to have a great dust supply hence why the SDC wanted to capitalize on that in the past. It’s also a good way to see Oscar befriend Whitley since, technically, as of V8, isn’t Whitley Schnee officially the new CEO of the SDC?
Tumblr media
He was Jacques’ heir to the company after all replacing Weiss from V4. And given that Jacques is now deceased…that would make Whitley next in line as head of the SDC and overseer of all its dust mining operations and resources across Remnant. Basically what I’m trying to say is that I can easily see Whitley becoming a dust supplier to the huntsmen and huntresses currently stationed in Vacuo; inclusive of Oscar, Nora, Ren and Emerald.
I just like the idea of Whitley using his resources with the SDC to further assist the hero team which is inclusive of dust. And since V8 highlighted Whitley being the one who cooked up the schematics that the team needed for the creation of the channels they used to migrate everyone from Atlas to Vacuo, this also highlights a technical talent in Whitley that I’d like to see continued for V9.
Maybe even have Whitley partner with Pietro Polendina (believing that him and Maria are still alive since they were only awkwardly written out of the story for V8) to create some new dust-based weapons and tools for our heroes to use. That’s something that could be done too.
I just want to see Oscar have the big-brain epiphany that since he can’t use magic, his next best bet is to use an alternative method---upgrading and refashioning the design of the Long Memory to now use dust with Whitley’s assistance.
The last time we saw the Long Memory’s design change was with Henkle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I think it would be fitting if the cane changed again with Oscar.
Perhaps... even use it as a way to symbolize Oscar finally accepting the Merge but still choose to do it his way by making it his own---leaving a part of himself etched into the new look of the weapon as his way of saying, even if he disappears, he was still willing to bank on a part of him living on in the new person he becomes---small yet extraordinary. Just like Oscar is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now that could be a really, really cool idea if done in the canon and as I mentioned before, it could simultaneously be a good way to have Oscar and Whitley bond since there are still fans, like myself, who would like to see these young boys become friends.
But that’s just me spouting ideas on that as usual. Rant aside, I hope I actually answered your question anon-chan.

"Always expecting betrayal... But never from you"
The general who became a father to his soldier (spoilers for rwby v8 ch13)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personal impressions:
I was so mad last week, thinking IW would have been defeated already/too soon but they tricked us. And I'm so glad it's a Winter vs. Ironwood fight. And the emotions.... I can't.
He was her father figure and I'm sure it was viewed like that from both sides. We were clearly shown what IW would do if anyone was in his way. Even when she disobeyed he didn't shoot her. He trusted her until the last moment.... We saw him get mad, break down and hopeless. But never cry. It's not just any soldier he's fighting. He's fighting his right hand. Winter Schnee, someone who was like a daughter to him.
But let's get to their actual relationship.
An essay on Winter in RWBY is planned btw.
Winter seems to have the highest rank in the military next to Ironwood, which is impressive for her age and shows her determination but also how IW believes in her
In V4 Jacques claimed that IW "stole his daughter" and IW hinted at that they often had this conversation
In V7 Jacques asked IW if Winter knew that Weiss returned to Atlas
From the point of V2 and V3 it seems that Winter still had contact to Jacques but not as much anymore in V7, something happened and I think because of the dust embargo IW and Jacques had their confrontation and Winter obviously chose IW's side and detached from her father completely
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(It was always hinted (and I think even stated in the remnant guide book) that Winter protected her siblings and had to take the most abuse. And you can clearly see that by her type of fight or flight trauma and how she's literally supposed to represent the ice queen with her hidden emotions and stuff
Tumblr media
You see her in that state of shock, fear, panic, trauma etc. when she realizes that she failed Ironwood. He was proud of her for catching Yang, Ren and Jaune and put his hand on her since they would be useful. Harriet then told him and I think this represents how someone like IW would be able to hurt her that much emotionally since he is in the position of an authority and a father figure to her)
Also he was ready to shoot his people at any time like the council man or Marrow but he didn't shoot her and allowed her to stay by her side
That and how she defends IW most of the time show how she trusts her judgment, IW trusts her judgement as well as seen in V4 when he told Jacques that Winter told him that there was a threat in Mistral
In World of Remnant we see IW walking past soldiers and Winter standing out. It was about the technical grooming of atlas students to join the military but you can tell from what we know of Ironwood, that he has a good heart (eruption fang made a vid on that recently)
When Winter told Weiss that "the general would have a place for you" She said it with such happiness, atlas and the military was winter's new home and IW gave her the chance to repurpose her life
She even defended IW in front of Jacques, her biological father and she takes great personal offense when his judgement is mistreated. Even when Weiss talked about trust Winter said that he would never hide anything from her
The offer with the Winter Maiden... You could say that he did this to control her and I'd accept your opinion... But there's one thing that makes me think that he still obviously also cared for her. Over the years he knew how much the military meant to her. She even told Penny that her life doesnt matter and only her job does. It means everything to her and like Winter said herself, she saw the Maiden powers as a privilege and it makes me feel like Ironwood saw them as something that would make her unique and give her once again a purpose that is unique to her and not just her being one of many soldiers
Tumblr media
He even apologized, knowing it wouldn't be easy for her (since he expected Winter and not Ozcar) and when he had his talk with RWBY he called Winter her/Weiss' sister instead of just her name and idk but that just made this even more special
In Volume 8 it is once again shown how Winter is basically the one who also trusted Ironwood until the end. And in ch 12 she didnt judge him... She expressed her worries for his behavior. She couldn't believe the man who made her feel like she was everything would ever become so cruel
Tumblr media
They way their worry for each other looks so similar
And while I know that they have a theme for the Atlas military , I think it's obvious how Winter looked even more like IW in all her outfits compared to the rest of the military
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many people think Ironwood is dumb for over trusting Winter but I think it shows his flaw as a general. He let's his emotions get in the way since he cares about her and continues to trust her even though she disobeyed orders
His last words were "As my last order: step aside", he could've just shot her again as she layed defenseless on the ground but he didn't
Remember how in the first episode he said "Thank you Winter, I don't know what I would do without you"
Tumblr media
Right before, she said that she'll be fine without him asking anything. It sounds a little more personal in my opinion. Why would you tell your boss that you'll be fine without him asking about your status? the conversation was literally about Qrow and Robyn before but he looked worried and wanted the room for themselves and she immediately said that.
Some people also talk about how they emphasized with Ironwood in volume 7 since wasn't shown to have family or a partner yet would do anything for Atlas. But again, he did care about Winter a lot and wanted her to be save.
Something I also noticed when writing this is that in volume 3 Ironwood called her Schnee yet in V7 he calls the Ace Ops and her via first name basis. Clover said that he trusts Ironwood with this life and I think that's how Winter and the Ace ops felt about him, the person who gave them hope. Especially Winter.
And now we're here. Seeing the man cry a tear. We know now, if Winter wins, she has to kill him. Imprisoning him wasn't enough. And I think that will be her final moment of her being a "Ice Queen", when she has to kill him, she will probably turn to her emotional side and grieve.
As mentioned, the military, her position, her rank and Ironwood meant everything to her. She talked so enthusiastically when she had her conversation with Weiss about moving in together without their father and how IW has a place for her younger sister. And now along with Ironwood, both are in a situation they never thought they'd be in.
That was it from me. In short form , I just wanted to share some ideas and things I've noticed about their relationship and dynamic. None of this is meant as a romantic way and you can of course disagree but please stay respectful. Thank you and we'll see each other next chapter<3
P. S. Winter please don't die

Mystery March 15: Family
Halfway there W00T
Also this is a continuation of my MSA Holiday Spirits Gift for @worldbeyondtheworld
Arthur jumped at the sudden ring of the phone. He sent it a suspicious look. It was almost midnight, who would be calling? It was too late for even a spam call.
Tentatively,, he answered it. "Hello?"
"Arthur?" A familiar voice asked. It was that friend of Vivi's cousin. Velma or something. "What are you doing up?"
"Why did you call if you thought I wouldn't be up?" Arthur countered.
"I thought Lewis would be up, since he doesn't need to sleep. It doesn't matter though. How fast can you, or at least Vivi, get to Moonscar Island?"
Arthur shifted and grabbed a pencil and paper while he used his shoulder to hold the phone to his ear. "Depends. Where is it?"
"A bayou in Louisiana, near New Orleans." Arthur looked unimpressed.
"You do realize we're in Texas, right? And Lewis is the only one who can fast travel via medium."
"I know, but we're seriously out of our depth here. We were told it was a ghost, we were ready for ghosts. We were not ready for centuries old Voodoo cat people who sustain their immortality by draining the life from their victims, and the zombiefied remains of the previous victims."
Arthur fumbled and almost dropped the phone. "Are you safe now? Is anyone missing?" He stood up and started running towards the bedroom Lewis and Vivi were sleeping in.
"We're all together and all fine, I think. Shaggy and Scooby got slightly life drained, but he seems to be fine now. The cat creatures are dead, but Fred-"
Arthur cursed, Vivi would NOT take it well if her cousin was hurt. "Okay Velma, I just need you to keep it together a little while longer-''
~
"What the Hell?" Detective Bo Neville cried as a giant fox with a young woman and young man riding on it appeared with a fiery skull ghost by its side.
"I thought you were in Texas?" Daphne asked, getting up.
"Magic cheating." Arthur answered. "It's expensive, and I don't mean monetarily. But yeah, this seemed worth it."
"What going on with Fred?" Vivi jumped off Mystery and ran over to the group, only to have her own question answered the moment she saw him. "Okay, I see the problem." she said, extremely relieved.
"As I believe Vivi can handle this, the rest of us should make sure there were no unexpected surprises where the rituals took place. Could you guide us to the site? And not you two,” he nodded at Shaggy and Scooby. “Until you've had a thorough examination, I want you to rest." Mystery asked.
Shell-shocked, Detective Neville led them away.
"So," Vivi said, sitting on the ground, "Tell me what happened?"
~
They were trapped. Unable to move, despite nothing physically restraining them. The wax dolls did their work. As Lena said, they'd have lots of practice.
"Are we supposed to feel sorry for you?" Daphne snapped after they told their tale. "What the pirates did to you was horrible, and I can understand wanting revenge on them. But then you became worse than the pirates, not only killing innocent people and taking their possessions, but trapping their souls too!"
Lena hissed and slammed Daphne against the wall. Fred struggled against his invisible bonds when suddenly he felt a shift.
He was no longer tied in a cave, but on the ground in a gently snowing forest. He got up, no longer restrained, and saw someone sitting on a rock. Vivi? No, that wasn't who this was. "Mushi-obaasan?" he asked.
"Hello again Fred." Her voice wasn't what he was expecting, so different than Vivi's. "Can we talk for a bit?"
"But my friends-" Fred looked around, trying to find a way back to them.
"Time passes differently here. Don't worry, not matter how long we talk, no time will pass for them. Tell me, what did Vivi tell me of the clan your family married into?"
"Vivi said the Yukino Clan were protectors. That they protected people from evil." Fred recalled. "And that you were known for your swordsmanship and winter powers."
"Not bad, but perhaps overly simplified." Mushi smiled. "The worlds of man and magic tend to cross. Sometimes it's peaceful, and other times not. And not always were the yōkai - the magical ones - the aggressors. I and my clan acted as protectors. We protected human from yōkai and yōkai from humans. Though the gift of ice was originally a part of our bloodline, it faded through the generations. Now it only occurs when I deem one worthy. But as the two worlds separated, the need for the Yukino clan to answer the call to its traditional role comes rarely."
"Kinda wish we had someone like that with us now," Fred admitted.
"Funny, you should mention that." Mushi laughed. "Fred, you're family by marriage, and by the love of the family. But would you like to formally join the Yukino clan - ?"
"But I don't know anything about yōkai, except a bit about ghosts. Or how to fight." And he was probably about to die, but Lewis showed that didn't necessarily lower one's combat potential.
"But even not knowing how, would you? For those that need help?" She reached her hand out.
~
Fred's eyes suddenly lost focus as Lena attacked Daphne. Then his arm slowly rose, unaffected by the wax's spell.
"No! How is he doing that?" Simone grabbed his arm and tried to shove it back down. Then his hand suddenly clasped shut and Simone screamed as her claws became frozen in ice.
Fred's eyes sharpened as awareness returned to him. He was back in the cave, but didn't feel restrained by the doll anymore. He stood and could feel the ice thrumming inside him, begging to be let out. He held on to it, though. He was still too close to Daphne and Velma to risk it being let loose. The frost climbed along his arms and fists, but didn't bother him.
He aimed a sloppy punch at Lena, which grazed her shoulder, leaving shards of ice in its wake.
"What are you?" Lena hissed.
"A Yukino." Fred said with a grin. He pushed the ice out from his hands along the floor, freezing Lena and Simone’s feet to the floor. Once sure they couldn't move, he pulled the hair and cloth out of the dolls of Daphne, Velma, and Bo.
"Grandma Mushi?" Daphne asked lightly.
"Grandma Mushi'' Fred confirmed, before Shaggy and Scooby's screams rent through the cave.
They all ran towards the sound, but Fred pulled ahead. He got to the mouth of the cave and felt his heart stop as he saw Shaggy and Scooby in Jacques’ claws. His vision narrowed until he only saw his friends, their bodies shriveling like the zombies that had been chasing them.
The Ice surged through him and he made a jump he certainly wouldn’t have been capable of before. He grabbed Jacques’ head in both his hands and shoved all the ice he could.
The giant cat monster fell over and his frozen head smashed to pieces on the stone floor.
“Like, Ice timing, Fred,” Shaggy said weakly, even as he began to return to normal. “I was beginning to feel like a raisin.”
“Are you guys okay?” Fred asked, trying his best to ignore the very dead body he had just killed.
“Retting rere,” Scooby answered.
“Boys!” Daphne ran forwards and flung her arms around them. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“You okay Fred?” Velma asked, glancing between the frost falling from his fingertips and Jacques’ corpse.
“I have no idea,” Fred answered honestly.
As he said this the zombie surged in. Shaggy and Scooby shrieked and Fred took a defensive posture. But he didn’t feel the same pressure and urgency from the ice he had before.
And the zombies seemed content to ignore them, save for one confederate soldier that helped Shaggy up and another who patted Scooby’s head as they passed.
“Like, what was up with that?” Shaggy asked in wonder.
“The zombies aren’t the bad guys.” Velma explained. “They were the victims, those Simone, Lena, and Jacques killed over the centuries.”
“Zoinks,” Shaggy said, more quietly than usual.
“What do we do now?” Daphne asked quietly.
“I think we don’t do anything.” Fred answered. “I think this is the zombies finding peace.”
As if in response twin screams came from the chamber and Jacques body slowly dissolved into aether. The zombies still lingering in the passage collapsed, their spirits joining a parade of souls floating upward.
The soldier who helped Shaggy up stopped to salute them “Thank you kindly,” he said, before floating upwards.
“What just happened?” Bo asked.
“A lot.” Daphne said simply, and Fred leaned against the cave wall to catch his breath.
The wall froze.
“You have no idea how to turn the ice off, do you?” Velma observed.
The floor under his feet froze.
Velma sighed. “Let’s call your cousin.”
~
“And that’s it.” Fred finished from the center of the ring of ice that surrounded him.
“I’m so glad you’re safe,” Vivi hugged him, being unaffected by the cold he was projecting. “Now the first thing-” She was cut off by a sudden explosion as violet-tinged fire poured out of the mouth of the nearby cave. “Sounds like the boys are almost done. Now the first thing we need to do is get you a weapon.”
“I think I am a weapon.” Fred waved his icy hand back and forth.
“And that’s your problem.” Vivi explained, “Mushi had her sword and I had my bat. We channeled the ice through them and that made it easier. Putting down or sheathing a weapon is a great way to mentally end a dangerous situation. But you used your hands, and you can’t really put those down. And the fact that you’re still in enemy territory and very freaked out isn’t helping. As far as the ice is concerned, you’re still in battle.”
“But the cat monsters are gone-”
“Oh you have a lot to learn.” Vivi bemoaned. “They’re gone. This is still enemy territory. And this place is steeped in two hundred years of sacrificial magic. That doesn’t vanish in an instant. The boys are making sure no one can access it easily, but it’s going to be a long while before Moonscar Island isn’t steeped in the kind of power the Yukino clan is dedicated to stopping.”
“Evil Cat God Altar is toast,” Arthur announced cheerfully, Detective Neville behind him with a hundred yard stare. “Lewis is checking to see if anything else in the house needs a good cleansing fire and Mystery is negotiating non-hostilities with the cats.”
“The cats?”
“Yeah, turns out they’ve absorbed enough of the magic those three were using to not be normal cats anymore. The general argument Mystery is using is their colony attacked yours first and you retaliated. And that there will be no further retaliation if they don’t start anything.” Arthur explained.
“Can we go now?” Detective Neville asked in a small voice.
“Lewis can melt anything Fred accidentally freezes, so we should be good as soon as he gets back.”
“I’m going to be stuck in Texas again, aren’t I?” Fred asked dryly.
“Yup, you need training. Combat and study.” Vivi said cheerfully. She helped him up and gave him a bone-crushing hug. “And this may be weird to say, since we’re cousins, but welcome to the family, Fred.”

RWBY Volume 8 Chapter 8 Recap
“Dark” ------------
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the Atlas prison, Qrow, along with Robyn, Watts and Jacques were hearing the noises of the war outside between the Atlas and the Grimm, but Qrow noticed that there was something headed towards them and suddenly, the wall blew up in front of them causing the roof above them to start collapsing, and all that was seen outside of the giant hole through the wall was a raven cawing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, back at the Schnee Manor, Klein was treating Nora, as she was slowly regaining consciousness, then Ruby, Weiss and Whitley carry Penny into the room, laying her down on the smaller bed by Nora, Ruby asks Klein if he can help her, Klein says that even what they have told them, he hardly knows what Penny is, but her basic anatomy is similar enough to stitch up her wound.
Tumblr media
The power in the manor shut down due to the bombings outside, May calls Ruby on speaking, wanting to know if their okay, Ruby tells her that the bombing cause half of Atlas’ power to go out, but their okay.
Tumblr media
May apologized for not staying with them as she flies her airship, saying that time is running out for the people of Mantle in the carter. Ruby apologizes back and tells May that when they know what’s wrong with Penny, they’ll do something to help them. May then tells her before she signs off to not beat herself up, saying at that point, she doesn’t know how much is left to be done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby says, with tears in her eye that it’s all too much, The Grimm, The Carter, Nora and Penny, she wanted to know how they could fix all of it, Klein then says they can’t worry about fixing everything and try and focus on fixing things one step at a time, he then says that he can work faster to fix one problem if the power was turned back on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willow Scnhee then arrives at the door, saying that they have a generator near the edge of the estate, also saying that she’s above drinking in the dark, then greeting Klein in whom she hasn’t seen in a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weiss brings up that Schnee Dust Company executives have their own exhilarate power supplies in case of city wide blackout, saying that it’s extremely unfair, but it may be so bad to have company perks. Whitley then says that the SDC just doesn’t have perks, but the whole company. Whitley goes on to say that if the people of Mantle need a way out, they could use the rows of cargo ships sitting in the hangars because of the embargo, Weiss then says that there are also drones there similar to the ones at Snowshoe Shipping, Whitley says that he can order as much as they need to pilot the ships down to the crater and get people to safety while the Grimm are occupied with General Ironwood’s forces, all he needs to do is to access Jacques’ computer.
Tumblr media
Ruby and Blake head to the generator to turn it on, while it’s processing, Blake tells Ruby that this will work, Ruby replies by saying that nothing else has. Blake then tells Ruby....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I know you don’t always know what to do, but that’s never stopped you from doing something. I was like that as a girl, but time and...a lot of other things took their toll on me and then I wasn’t sure if that girl could actually survive in the world...until I met you. It was a little strange at first cause you were younger, but I’ve always looked up to you, Ruby, and I still do.” - Blake Belladonna
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby, with tears in her eyes, thanks Blake for those kind words as the generator’s process was now completed and the power was back on in the Schnee Manor, but as soon as they did, Blake’s expression turned to shocked as she saw The Hound in the window right behind Ruby.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hound busted through the window, which caused a big noise that was heard inside the manor, causing Willow to reach for her wine bottle shaken. Weiss then contacts Ruby and Blake to know what’s going on, Blake just said that it was a Grimm attack, but they were to occupied with it to say anything else, Weiss then leaves the room to let Whitley carry out the rest of the plan on the computer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby asked what kind of Grimm is The Hound, but Blake said it was just a Grimm, unaware that it was sentient, telling her to focus on her Silver Eyed Attack while she holds it off, however, it didn’t last long as the Hound made quick work of Blake, it then said “Get The Girl” as it charged and took down Ruby, depleting her aura and holding onto her, The Hound then spread out its wings and was about to fly away with Ruby, but then, Blake used her weapon to wrap around the legs over the Hound, holding it in place, Weiss arrives on the scene, then she warns Klein about the Grimm and tells him to keep everyone together and call if there is trouble.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside the manor, Willow dropped her wine bottle and glass, Klein asks her to calm herself, but Willow says she can’t and runs out of the room, but then suddenly,  Penny woke up with glowing red eyes, but as a completely different person, hacked by Watts, Klein tries to treat Penny when he turned around to see her up, but Penny didn’t respond as she pushes him away, but trying to fight to it, Penny activates her maiden powers to try and fight the control off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weiss tries to summon a giant ice Grimm to fight off the Hound, but suddenly, the underground Grimm appeared distracting Blake and Weiss, The Hound broke free from Blake’s weapon and then saw the green light emanating from the manor, Ruby warns Weiss and Blake that the Hound is after Penny, the Hound drops Ruby to the ground, knocking her out for a while, Weiss then goes to help Klein and the others while Blake tries to help Ruby, but then out of nowhere a centipede like Grimm comes from underground, confronting Blake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back in the manor, Klein tries to Penny to calm down saying that she is okay, but Penny then says that she doesn’t want to help Salem, just then, a now conscious Nora grabs Penny’s hand and tells her that no one will make her do anything that she doesn’t want to do, Penny, still fighting the control says that their is a part of her that is making her do so.
“It’s just a part of you...don’t forget about the rest...” - Nora Valkyrie.
Hearing this, Penny stops her maiden power, holding onto Nora’s hand. Weiss then calls back Klein to let her know she’s on her way to help, Klein asks her to hurry, saying that Willow and Whitley have yet to return.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willow ran into her room in a panic, she was about reach for her wine bottle, but she decided not to, just then, the Hound busted through the front entrance window, sniffing out Penny, who’s green blood was stained on the floor of the entrance, Weiss entered the manor to search for the Hound, then Willow contacted Weiss shouting “Above you!” and then the Hound came down and struck Weiss to a piano, Weiss was ready to fight it, but the Hound sniffed out something and crawled onto the walls to the hallway, searching.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willow tells Weiss that she can see the Hound crawl to the hallway near Winter’s old room, then asking if Weiss can kill it, Weiss asks Willow what it’s doing, Willow says that she doesn’t know and asks what it’s doing here, Weiss then says it doesn’t matter and tells her to keep an eye out on it so she can track it down. Willow agrees and keeps a look out, but where the Hound was heading towards next, shocked her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willow tries to warn Whitley who was finishing the shipment, but Whitley ignored it and said she was the last thing he needed, just then, the Hound came in the room slowly where Whitley was in, surprised by this, he hid as quick as he could behind the desk, the Hound was sniffing around the room when the computer sounded a notification about the credentials being verified, the Hound was moving closer and closer to the desk, saying “I Know You’re Here...”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suddenly, a summoned Ice boar Grimm charges and holds down the Hound, Willow arrived and shouted at Whitley to run, which he did, before confirming the orders to the crater. Willow and Whitley ran as fast they could away from the Hound, and before it could get them, Weiss summons an ice wall to defend her mother and brother from The Hound. “I didn’t forget you...” - Weiss Schnee
But the Hound was breaking through the ice wall, Weiss tells Willow and Whitley to run while she fends it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While fighting this acid spewing Grimm, Blake then pleads with Ruby to get back up and that she needs her. Blake uses fire and ice clones to try and counter its attacks, but this Grimm was too formidable as it was about to finish her off, but then suddenly, Ruby awakens and finishes off the Grimm, then smiles at Blake, saying that she heard Blake calling her for help, as she helps her up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Penny then lets out a scream, trying so hard to fight off Watts’ control, but it was too late, Penny succumbed to it and walks out of the room to the entrance area, Whitley asks what she was doing, Penny then said that she was going to the vault and was going to self-terminate, then suddenly, the Hound attacked Penny, but she held him off, then suddenly, the Hound grows another arm on its back, holding on Penny’s head and slamming her down three times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hound held Penny hostage, and then Ruby with a serious tone said that was enough, then she used her Silver Eyes to blast the Hound through the window of the entrance way, letting go of Penny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then, in a shocking turn of event, as the Hound was getting right back up to its feet, it was living person who was the Hound all along, as he was slowly regenerating he kept saying “Take The Girl!”, but as he was slowly headed towards Ruby’s team, Willow and Whitley pushed down the knight statue to take down The Hound, destroying it. Ruby fell to her knees after what she just saw, Weiss asked what it was and all Ruby could as she sees the Hound turn dust... “....That was....a person....” - Ruby Rose
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back at the prison, Cinder Fall removes the debris from Watts’ body and says to him that this is the first time I’d be happy to see him again as she helps him up to his feet. Watts tries to ask what she was doing there, but Cinder covers his mouth and says that it’s her turn to ask for something, as she carries Watts in fireman’s carry position. The Atlas security arrive to stop Cinder from helping Watts escape, but Cinder used her flame semblance to fly above them, dodge the rocket launcher and fly away to the Whale back to Salem.
----------- The secret of The Hound has been revealed to be a faunus! That means Salem has the power to turn humans and faunus into Grimm Hounds. Is there any hope to turn them back to normal? If not, what will Ruby’s decision be? What of Penny? Will she be able to break free from Watts’ hacking control before she leads herself to destruction? So many questions have yet to be answers and will be found out on the final chapters of RWBY Volume 8.

Okay, so I’ve talked before about the many problems I have with James Ironwood’s semblance ‘Mettle’ here, but I wanted to make a post about what changes I personally would make to James’s semblance and how I would put it into practice in the show.
This is pro James Ironwood content. Ironwood haters, don’t @ me, don’t interact.
1. Change the phraseology and the way the semblance is presented. I would present it as a literal form of mind control, where his semblance makes him do whatever it takes to accomplish a set goal. Phrasing it as increasing his stubbornness and focus to the point where other things fall by the wayside makes it seem like his semblance just makes character traits much stronger, villainizes those traits, and is insensitive to people that hyper-fixate and can’t help that. Phrasing his semblance instead as centered around making him do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal, even if that changes who he is, is better in my opinion.
2. Change his semblance from passive to active This is good for a couple of reasons. People can’t control their passive semblances, which A. leaves James looking almost completely sympathetic (since, you know, he can’t fully control his actions) and it also leaves the casual viewer wondering what’s James and what’s his semblance. Did he bring his ships to Vale of his own volition or was it his semblance? Did he close the borders to Atlas himself or is it his semblance? Did he shoot Oscar himself, or was it his semblance? Etc. Etc. Making his semblance something that he himself chooses to use despite recognizing that it’s dangerous both gives James some level of culpability and it makes it much clearer to the audience what’s James’ personality and what is done under the influence of his semblance. I would make it so that James can turn on his semblance, but rarely ever does, because when he turns it on, he can’t make himself turn it off, and he can’t control himself or his responses in that state. I would make it so the only ways for James’s semblance to turn off again is if his goal is completed, his aura breaks, or he dies.
3. Make his semblance use clear through visual cues Honestly, this one isn’t as needed as the other two, but it just makes it much easier to understand and A. gives the audience another way to be clued in to when James is or isn’t under the affects of his semblance, and B. gives the characters a way to be clued in to when James is or isn’t under the affects of his semblance. In the first Avengers, when someone got possessed, their eyes would turn black and then turn a certain color of blue. A similar thing could happen with James, his eyes lightening, even if it was really subtle.
Tumblr media
Also a change in body language would make for a subtle, but nice shift. James tends to put his arms behind his back, he tends to look people in the eye when he’s talking to them, he sighs, he acts tired out, he acts a little awkward, he gives little physical signs of affection like a shoulder to the hand, or a hug, or smiling softly. Having him do none of these things - keeping his arms at his sides, not looking at people when he talks to them or they talk to him, acting perfectly alert, not ever showing his more affectionate, warm, or awkward sides - all would make it clear that there’s something off. James isn’t acting like himself.  To be totally fair to the show, there’s for sure some of that ‘James isn’t acting like himself’ stuff in the show, buuuut to be totally honest about the show, it’s clear we’re meant to see James as just an evil villain and his semblance isn’t even mentioned in the show, so... Yeah.
So in my ideal version, James’s semblance is an active semblance he can’t turn off, that forces him to accomplish a set goal no matter what and will even change his morality and base personality in order to achieve it, and it has visual cues like a change in body language and eye color shifting. Another thing to note is that James’s semblance is a secret, even to many of his confidants. The people that James has told about his semblance are Qrow and Ozpin.
Now to apply it to the show.
Adding an extra scene into the early episodes of V7.
Qrow enters James’s office and the two start talking about James’ plans. Qrow notes that it all still seems like ‘a bit much’ and James dismisses this concern, talking about how drastic times call for drastic measures, and they have to do whatever they can to stop Salem. Qrow has a moment’s pause and a guilty look (since he’s keeping the secret of Salem being immortal,) but then narrows his eyes and asks James “Is that you or your semblance talking?” James sighs, he says “You know I don’t use my semblance.” Qrow looks unconvinced, and James turns to face him a little more fully. They lock eyes and Qrow seems satisfied, nodding a little and turning away again. James asks Qrow to trust him, and Qrow agrees, with the qualification that James has to let him - and the others - help him instead of taking it all on himself, which James also agrees to, if not a little reluctantly.
Later in the episode ‘Gravity’ when Ironwood makes the choice to leave Mantle, he does so clearly under his own power. As Team RWBY start opposing him and after realizing they’ve gone behind his back, we see James hesitate. He takes a deep breath with his back to the girls and the Ace Ops and then triggers his semblance, his aura lighting up for a minor moment and his eyes shifting color to a lighter blue. The Ace Ops and Team RWBY all have a split second moment of confusion - seeing his aura flash - but then James turns and that’s when he declares he’s going to enact martial law. The scene continues on as is, with Ruby contacting the others and the Ace Ops going to arrest Team RWBY, etc.
Meanwhile, Qrow, Robyn, and Clover are all left confused and uncertain, and then receive the order for everyone’s arrest, including Qrow. Cue more confusion, and Qrow says there must be some sort of mistake. Robyn starts up the fight, Clover and Qrow try to de-escalate things, and in this version of things, Qrow doesn’t really join in the fight (Oh, I should note, I’m also erasing the Oz-punch in this version because I can do whatever I want.) When the plane goes down, he’s still trying to defend and make sense of things, but Tyrian’s coming on strong, taking advantage of Clover trying to make sure Qrow can’t get away - since he literally doesn’t know that Qrow isn’t a criminal - and Qrow being unwilling to fight Clover, and Tyrian kills Clover himself. Qrow’s distraught and affected, but doesn’t blame James, and Tyrian gets away.
He and Robyn are both arrested, and meanwhile, James and Oscar’s confrontation happens, and right before Ironwood shoots him, Oscar realizes that his eyes are different, but is then shot. In season eight and in jail with Robyn, Jacques, and Watts, we see Qrow frustrated and upset as the three argue back and forth, and all three of them are blaming Ironwood, when Qrow gets up and again starts trying to say there’s been some kind of mistake. Robyn says he’s putting too much faith in Atlas’s higher ups, and Qrow says that she just doesn’t know James like he does - which is true. When the guards come to take Watts away, Qrow says “That isn’t like him,” And Robyn rolls her eyes, but we see Qrow’s eyes widen in realization and he tells Robyn that James must’ve triggered his semblance.
Meanwhile, Oz (now back and getting the lowdown on everything from Oscar) speculates on whether or not James’s semblance is affecting his choices, but the both of them agree that they’re not 100% sure if they can give James the benefit of that doubt after Lionheart and everyone else that’s ever betrayed Oz (Note this also leaves a place where at least Oscar can say he’s sorry for how the Jinn/backstory thing went down.) Oscar doesn’t ask how James’s semblance works and Oz only really mentions that it alters his behavior. Oscar doesn’t tell the others Oz is back and Oscar doesn’t mention the semblance to the others, since neither of them are sure if it’s really at play.
Next time we see them, Robyn is pressing Qrow for details on James’s semblance and he tells her what it does and how it works. Robyn isn’t sure, but Qrow insists. He does wonder why James even turned it on and takes a moment to be angry that he did when he knows how dangerous it is - and maybe makes some comment about ‘if I could keep mine off, I’d never use it.’ Robyn hesitates, and then says “Well, I trust you, Qrow. If you say it’s his semblance, and that’s what’s really putting Mantle at risk... Then how do we stop it?” The two start making a plan to break out of the jail to get to Ironwood so they can help him.
Meanwhile, everything with Ironwood keeps escalating, the Ace Ops are still following his orders, they try to arrest Penny, delivering the bomb to the whale, find Team JRY, Winter makes her compromise, Cinder breaks in to free Watts, yada yada. When the Ace Ops bring the bomb back to Ironwood and it’s revealed Qrow and Robyn have escaped, James starts talking about how he should’ve used Qrow to get to Penny, could’ve used Penny’s friends against her, and then decides to drop the bomb on Mantle. And Winter clearly figures out something is wrong and starts getting suspicious and freaked. She tries to talk him out of it and tells him “this isn’t you, why are you doing this?” but James will barely look at her and keeps insisting, and finally she ‘agrees,’ but clearly seems perturbed and very unhappy with it.
Meanwhile, seeing the bomb threat puts Oz over the edge of thinking this is James affected by his semblance. Both he and Oscar still aren’t totally sure, but bring it up to Ruby and the others, and there’s a moment of “What the heck, another secret” before Oscar defends Oz “We didn’t know for sure, there was so much going on, I’m the one who didn’t think to mention it, it wasn’t our secret to tell,” and Jaune or something quickly says they don’t have time to argue anyway, and everyone moves on. No one is sure that it’s just James’s semblance, but Ruby declares that they have to try and break his aura and trust that there’s a fix - keeping the themes consistent, what with Emerald easily accepted right there. However, there’s still Salem reforming and the virus infecting Penny to think of, so they start making their whole plan as it is in the real show.
When Winter helps Marrow escape, she tells him that there’s something very wrong with James (even noticing about his eyes,) and he - like Robyn - thinks she’s just putting too much faith in him, and Winter sadly says that maybe he’s right, but that she just would never have believed he’d do something like that, insisting that his other choices made sense, that every war takes sacrifice, but this was just too far, cruel, evil, even. Marrow gets more serious and agrees.  Qrow and Robyn, having escaped, start realizing everything that’s happening, they start to become even more frantic to find James and break his aura, which kicks into overdrive when they hear the message saying they only have an hour to go before James drops a bomb on Mantle. Qrow says “James is never going to forgive himself if that happens,” and Robyn declares “I’ll never forgive him if that happens.” Qrow gets angry and Robyn gets angry in response, reminding Qrow - and the audience - that James is the one who chose to turn his semblance on.
When the two run into Winter and Marrow, Winter starts telling them that James is planning to bomb Mantle, and Qrow gives her a quick low-down of James’s semblance. Winter then gets a quick “I knew it,” moment. Winter convinces Qrow she’ll break James’s aura or die trying and for him and Robyn to focus on getting the other Ace Ops out of commission since James will let her get close enough to land a strong enough hit. Qrow is really reluctant to leave it in her hands, but she assures him “I’m not going to let the General destroy himself,” and Qrow - despite his clear early problems with Winter, says “I know you won’t.” The fight goes down pretty much the same, with the kids still all going hard and Winter getting in the final hit that puts James out of commission. Nora, Jaune, and Oscar are all like “Did that do it, is he back to how he should be?” And Winter says she’ll bring him to a medical room. Nora and Jaune exchange an unsure look, Nora ventures “Just a medical room?” And Winter sighs, looks a little unsure herself, but then nods. Ozpin then speaks up, saying “She’s right. I... I trust him. I have to trust him.” Jaune, Nora, and Ren then agree, nodding, and then things start continuing like normal, only Winter is keeping Ironwood in a medical room instead of a jail cell.
When James wakes back up, he’s himself again. He has to deal with the fact that because of his choice to turn his semblance on, he almost caused destruction and death to innocent people at his own hand and when there was absolutely no real reason to. He has to grapple with the hurt he caused as well as knowing he literally had no control and couldn’t even feel horror or guilt over what he was doing in the moment. He could go on to Vacuo, but he knows the general population of Atlas and Mantle won’t just accept that it was his semblance at work. He’s going to be hated, maybe even arrested as a villain, his position and his ability to lead that he’s strived for in an effort to help whoever he can is gone, many of the people who were his allies will never look at him the same way again, he hurt Penny so much, and he can’t just get rid of that because he never meant to and hadn’t been able to control it - and it was still because he made the choice to turn on his semblance in the first place. But. No, in this version, he doesn’t die, and Qrow would talk to him and connect with him again somewhere down the line, and when James started berating himself, Qrow would softly and sympathetically say
“You idiot. I know you didn’t do this.”
This is by no means perfect. This is by no means without flaw. And I know my Ironqrow shipping impacted it, but you know what? I don’t care. I wrote this for me. This is the headcanoned version that’s going to live in my head rent free, canon or otherwise.

Betrayal Chapter 20 - Epilogue
Written by: JuliaFC
Beta: @itsagrestebug and MyImaginationFlows
Summary: The story comes to an end. Thank you for reading! (810 words)
Disclaimer: This story is based on characters and situations created and owned by (c) Thomas Astruc, TS1 Bouygues, Disney Channel, Zagtoon, Toei Animation. No money is being made and no copyright or trademark infringement is intended.
Written for the "Snippet July" challenge of the Miraculous Fanworks Discord server @miraculousfanworks AND for LadyNoir July @ladynoirjuly Day 31 — Forevermore/pound it. Let me know what you think!
oOoOoOoOoOo
"Pound it!" called the superheroes as they all moved to bump their fists together.
Ladybug looked at her team. "Thank you so much everyone for your contribution. We wouldn't have succeeded without the intervention of each and every one of you!"
"I haven't helped much," said Thueban Jameel with a little sigh and a pout.
"You're joking right?" asked Ladybug. "If it weren't for you, Volpina would have succeeded in stealing Su-Han's staff. I owe you the safety of my identity, of my family and of all my friends."
Thueban Jameel blushed at the praise. "Thank you, Ladybug. But I couldn't help when my bro was sucked into the vacuum!"
Ladybug put a hand on his shoulder. "You did your best. Pigella and I arrived and attacked the akuma immediately after Chat Noir was sucked in, so it's understandable that you waited to see what would happen. It was actually a very good move. As the Snake, you need to force yourself to take a backseat. And even more so as the Peacock holder."
"Thank you, Ladybug," said Thueban Jameel, lowering his gaze.
As all temporary holders returned their Miraculous to Ladybug after detransforming, Chat Noir watched Pegabug bring Rose back to the Liberty and then come back to the alley they were hiding in to detransform. When Su-Han, Alya, Nino and Adrien met again the bluebell gaze of Marinette, the girl had the Miraculous of the Peacock and of the Turtle in her hand.
"Alya Césaire," she said, looking at her friend with a decisive frown, "this is the Miraculous of the Peacock. It provides the power of bringing emotions to life." She put the brooch in Alya's palm and smiled. "I'm giving it to you permanently; you will use it for the greater good and, one day, return it to me."
Alya gave her a grateful look. "Thank you, Marinette. I'm honoured to don such a prestigious and powerful Miraculous." She pinned the brooch to her white t-shirt, making sure that it would be hidden from the view by her orange shirt. Duusu appeared in a twirl of light.
"Hello, Mlle. Alya, it's a great pleasure to see you again!" said the indigo kwami, circling Alya excitedly and making her giggle.
"Okay, okay little fella. Jump in my pochette—" she opened her small orange side bag, signalling to Duusu to hide inside. "—We'll have a chat later and you'll tell me what you like."
Then, Marinette turned to Nino. "Nino Lahiffe," she said, handing the green bracelet to him, "this is the Miraculous of the Turtle. I'm asking you to become Carapace full time."
Nino's eyes lit up and his smile could have rivalled Adrien's in brightness. "Thank you, Ladybug. It's my honour to accept!" He fist-bumped with the turtle kwami who had appeared in a buzz of light. "And it's nice to have you permanently, little dude. We'll have fun together!"
"You're breaking about a dozen rules, Marinette," came Su-Han's voice from their right. Marinette frowned when she darted her gaze to the older guardian, but her frown disappeared when she noticed the smile on his face. "But I trust you," said the man. "You made unconventional choices in the past, and you've never failed to amaze me."
"Thank you, Master Su-Han."
Time passed, slowly but surely. Lila had left the Collège in a very suspicious haste, which confirmed to Marinette and the team of her involvement with the new Papillon.
Triggered by Ladybug and Chat Noir's suspicions, the Police started an investigation to discover what happened to her, but the cunning fox was too clever and was able to cover her traces very effectively. The only one who really paid the price of Lila's machinations was Jacques Vouche, who ended up being arrested for forging a fake contract between his diner boat company and Prince Ali. He claimed the involvement of Lila Rossi in it, but unfortunately, he was never able to prove it and Lila got away scot free.
As expected, Ladybug's and Chat Noir's testimony cleared Nathalie of all charges; the older woman took on the duty of looking after Adrien as his Legal Guardian, assisted by Gérard 'the Gorilla', until the boy turned 18.
Marinette and the team proceeded on their bumpy road towards adulthood, between akuma attacks getting more vicious and manipulating by the day, and new challenges in life and at school. But with the guidance and the mentorship of Su-Han, Marinette matured into a confident Guardian and a powerful leader.
She didn't know what the future would entail to her, or when and if they would manage to defeat the new Papillon. One thing she knew for sure though: Ladybug and Chat Noir would always be there to protect the citizens of Paris. Whatever the challenge, they would face it together, or die in the attempt.
Together, until the end of time.

CAST
Note that I have changed the ages.
- Chase Brody - 16 A pretty happy guy. Very much lonely at home, but he's very quickly become attached to his new friends. Misses his brother Angus a lot, and is struggling with the Robbie realisation, as well as reconciling things he thought he'd imagined with the truth. Is called "Cheese Hat" sometimes. A big fan of surfing, he desperately wants to learn how to skateboard.
- Henrik Von Schneeplestien - 15 (turns 16 in a few days) The son of two german doctors who has spent a lot of time at boarding school and camps. He takes pride in his knowledge of things, and likes helping out. Can come off as arrogant and rude.
- Marvin McLoughlin - 16 Pretty chill guy with a love of sweaters, cats, and card tricks. He suffers from a lot of anxiety, and uses music to deal with it. He's attempting to be the backbone of the group, and only just failing. Childhood friends with Anti, and an absolute mamma's boy.
- Antontio Septi - 15 Marvin's childhood best friend, who happens to coincidentally be his only friend. He has suffered from the voices plaguing the lake since childhood, which have made him far more quick to anger than anyone else he knows. Trying his best. Goes by Anti.
- Johnnie Jackson - 15 Very sporty, with a strong need to do what's right, Jackie is a trans guy who is very much closeted about this fact. He tries his absolute best to save anyone he thinks is upset or in need of a friend, but is passionate and quick to anger which makes him both fast friends and fierce rivals with Anti. An avid parkour enjoyer.
-Jameson Jackson - 17 Jackie's older brother. He's something of a popular kid as things go at his school, great at both drama and drumming despite having never uttered a word. He's usually calm under pressure, but gets sick of people pushing him aside due to his lack of speaking during discussions, and is trying to work on being 'heard' in other ways.
-Jack - 30 A camp councillor who is surprisingly well informed about the goings on, despite his best efforts not to be. Anti gets a strange feeling about working with him.
-Keiran Finch - 22 Keiran isn't a nice person, per se, but he is absolutely doing his best. As a camp councillor who was a camper himself during the last incident, he was friends with the previous green cabin and became a recluse after Robbie's death. He's certainly looking out for the kids, but his end goal isn't known.
-Thomas - 23 Thomas works as a councillor too. He isn't in the know at all, but has been involved with more than his fair share of the drama due to following Keiran around. He seems to be close to him.
Phillip - 29 Phillip was also a councillor when the last incident occurred, but seems more concerned with keeping everyone out of trouble than seeking it out. He is trans, and helps Jackie out occasionally.
Robbie Necas (deceased) Robbie was a good friend of Angus, who drowned in an accident three years ago at the lake. His ghost is still around, fighting back against the dark dream and the king collector. He seems to be able to cleanse them of the infection, but can be limited by the king collector.
Angus Brody - 22 Angus lost his best friend and all semblance of normality at camp three years ago. After dropping out of all his plans, he has finally travelled to Perth to pursue a zoology degree, but has been dragged back into the situation through letters.
King Collector (???) The king collector, otherwise known as the warehouse entity or bitchboyspookyman is the inhabiter of the dark dream. It seems to hold power over the lake and surrounding forest, and wants something out of a few of the campers. It is a fan of chess metaphors. Jay Alblue - 23 Jay was a friend of Angus, Keiran, and Robbie at camp. After the events of everything which happened, he seemed to recover and move on with his life, but at the beginning of summer he returned, seemingly to kidnap Marvin on the King Collector's behalf. OTHER Emile - Henrik's uncle Jacques - Henrik's cousin, friends with Angus Cordelia - Marvin's mum Ella - A camp councillor
And.. the wisps! (You) Certain characters will remember you specifically, others will just be confused, but you're part of the story too. (in case you're interested in the revival, previous active participants! @hollenka99 @immabethehero @snow-lavender @taikeero-lecoredier )

i apparently enjoy putting down my thoughts on the off chance someone will read it and enjoy it so here’s rwby rewatch vol 3. i’m ready to be sad!!

- BROODY MAN
- hiiiii gavin
- so much mid battle banter. in the middle of a big important fight they just have to make jokes and argue. i love teenagers
- SILENCE YOU BOOB
- awww winter you’re a disaster and you’re horribly emotionally repressed because of your bitch ass dad but jesus christ you care about your little sister and you wanna know she’s doing okay and i’m emotional about it
- PENNYYYYY my love just keep being you
- jeez i forgot how early on ironwood was talking his shit about being “someone who will act”, the “only person” who will do what needs to be done, as if his course of action is what needs to be done
- every single person who underestimates emerald and mercury gets so fucked up. like so many people look at these youngerish teenagers with some funny one liners and banter and go “oh they seem capable and they’re confident and funny so i like em but i can take em” and then absolutely get the shit kicked out of them. and i think that’s why they’ve been so successful, cause nobody takes them seriously enough to consider them a threat.
- see this is why i love rwby. coco just turned her handbag into a gatling gun and cut down a field of grass with it
- god the way they hint at emerald’s semblance before fully showing what it is. *chef’s kiss*
- winter marry me
- we love an uncle who absolutely destroys his nieces at video games
- “they do and they’re called silver!” ruby i love you
- top heavy. heheh
- this dude’s weapon is a trumpet!! she’s got glowing nunchucks!! i love this show!!
- this battle music is AMAZING what the FUCK they’re fighting to JAZZ
- cinder if you keep having vague ominous dialogue people are gonna get the wrong idea
- oh yeah great idea asking a child to take on immense power which sends her into a stressed out panicky spiral and alienates her from the people she finally feels legitimately connected to and for once didn’t feel alienated from
- oh fuck. oh fuck the finals. oh god. oh no.
- she’s so happy. she’s so ready to have a good fight. i’m gonna cry
- FUCK
- and with one moment, the entire show flipped on its head
- god when i watched that the first time i fuckin freaked. i was not prepared man. i was warned. but i was not prepared for this much of a fucking tone change man. that quickly. like tone changes (in my experience) normally happen gradually, but this one happened in, what? 30 seconds?
- fuck
- god this is so bad
- and it GETS WORSE i can’t do this
- love that we can see yang’s distraught eyebrows through her bangs
- after this episode was the first time my friend asked me “how we doing buddy?” and i’ve only wanted to kill her more since then
- oh god emerald’s backstory. this poor child. she was so alone and cinder was there and said i can give you a place i can give you a purpose i can give you security and emerald latched on so hard.
- hiiiii laura bailey i wish you had more than a lil baby line and some sounds of effort
- god that little anklet
- god what a fuckin backstory episode man. backstory? evil plan explanation? idk but it was good
- great parent move. telling your kid you’ll only save them once.
- jaune you sweet good boy. what a good boy. i love him
- god this poor child. she doesn’t deserve this. FUCK i’m so sad. is that the last conversation they have?
- oooooh shit this song is so good. what the fuck i have chills it’s so fitting
- god everyone else is so happy and excited and then there’s ruby who is one of the very few people who knows how bad a fight between penny and pyrrha could be and pyrrha who’s got to decide if she wants someone else’s aura smushed with hers, which could turn her into a different person. FUCK
- peeeennyyyyy “salutations!! it’s an honor to meet you!” it huuuurts
- it makes me so sad but damn was this a good diabolical plan
- god im so sad. penny is so good. and pyrrha’s fuckin eyes. and ruby just collapsing. jesus christ. it’s all fuckin falling apart
- oh fuck here we go. those klaxons are so terrifying
- it makes me so happy that torchwick gets rescued and then like maybe a couple episodes later just gets swallowed
- the fuckin adam fight is coming up too. jesus. really piling on here
- RUBY IS USING ONE OF PENNY’S SWORDS IM GONNA CRYYY
- and she doesn’t even hesitate to save pyrrha
- the one and only time (to my memory) that ironwood is gentle is when he says no one would blame the students if they left. that might be the last time he actually remembers that they’re all teenagers and feels sympathy for these children with all this pressure on them
- oh yeah the big boy
- the first time i watched this i was LOSING MY MIND this whole time. like yang attacked mercury and from then on man. just freaking out.
- eurgh grimm juice
- c’mon blake you got this. i mean. technically you don’t. the fight goes poorly. but you fuckin try and you’re so brave about it and i love youuu
- shut the FUCK up adam you GROOMED her you ASSHOLE
- aahhhh i love velvet!!! her semblance and her whole fighting style is so goddamn cool and has such interesting implications for using weapons and powers of people who are dead
- OH SHIT SHE DOES SUMMON HERE DOESNT SHE. partly but still
- get fucked, torchwick. GET FUCKED. get fuckin chomped
- a backhanded slap feels so much more violent than any fighting with weapons
- uh oh evil katniss
- god. the fucking blood splatter turning the whole shot red. just their silhouettes. the slow motion. the arm slowly separating.
- my friend was also a big fan of “how we feeling?”
- bad. the answer is bad you fuckin sadist
- oz is… a lot of things, and one of them is a goddamn good fighter
- oh god oh noooo she’s gonna kiss & yeet AWWWW FUCK this is heartbreaking
- pyrrha i love you
- if i don’t look it’s not real
- oh pyrrha my love
- awww hey tai. what a good dad. love tai
- i’m so sad. everyone’s so sad. and then salem just has to do an ominous lil monologue where she lays out her whole plan to divide them and makes a fuckin semblance pun. she’s such a good villain
- jacque you stiff bitch
- they’re all fuckin scattered and depressed
- love team rnjr tho
- there she is. god what an ending

So, if RWBYJNRQMO weren't in Atlas in vol. 7 little would change. The Ace Ops do the mines. Penny fights grimm in Mantle. Penny and Winter talk. Tyrion kills people. Jacques invites Ironwood to dinner. Robyn still gets invited. The heat gets turned off. Clover goes to fight Tyrian. Penny gets the Maiden powers. RWBYJNR don't move some people to the crater...Amity might be the only change. Why does the camera follow these kids again? They violated Oz in vol. 6 and launched Amity in 8. That's it.
Yeah, I’m trying to think through all the actions we can reliably trace in Volume 7/8 and:
Salem wouldn’t have the Relic right now. The group brought it to Atlas and then didn’t put it in the vault, despite knowing (unlike Ironwood) that it still had a question left. Salem is surprised when Cinder shows up with it (it wasn’t her target right now) so no group, no question for her.
Clover would likely still be alive. No group, no arrest warrant to derail taking Tyrian back to Atlas. Arguably they may have failed to capture him without Qrow’s assistance, but Ironwood just as likely would have sent a third person in his stead.
Ironwood likely never would have teamed up with Robyn without Yang and Blake cluing her in, but does that matter when Robyn is against him again just a few hours later?
The Ace Ops never would have been knocked out when they had better things to do during a war than be unconscious.
I can see others making an argument that Penny wouldn’t have taken the Maiden powers without Ruby’s support/friendship/etc., but I think that’s based more in headcanoning and what we want the relationship to be, not what we actually see on screen. Ruby spoke to Penny once in the truck and fist-bumped her at the party. As you say, Winter has more of an impact on Penny’s development post-resurrection.
Ironwood and the rest of Remnant wouldn’t know about Salem’s immortality. That’s easily the biggest change, but... is that a bad thing? I still don’t believe that all of Remnant should have this information  — realistically thousands are dead now due to grimm attacks  — but Ironwood is a different case entirely. Beyond just being a crucial fighter in this war, he was working under the assumption that he could level an army at Salem and win. So Ruby warning him about her immortality saved countless lives, right? Well... no. Not since she stopped all those people from leaving, insisting they fight the immortal witch anyway. Ruby counteracted her own influence by forcing them to stay, so even if Ironwood had attacked rather than running, working under the inaccurate belief that he could beat Salem, the kingdom would still be in the same boat.
To my mind, outside of generically beneficial actions —  like doing regular huntsman work across those few weeks, being extra hands to protect people from grimm, etc. —  the group has achieved nothing in Atlas and arguably made things that much worse. They didn’t keep the Relic safe. Didn’t stop Tyrian from attacking the party guests/framing Penny. They had no strong emotional influence on the cast (outside of the negative). Their knowledge of Salem didn’t change the outcome of her attack (like Ruby encouraging Ironwood to leave due to immortality). They likewise haven’t used their Relic knowledge to say, “Hey, piling everyone beneath the city currently held up via the thing Salem wants is a very bad idea...” They haven’t reconciled with Ozpin and used his knowledge to their advantage. Ruby hasn’t practiced or attempted to use her silver eyes. They’re going after Oscar, but Oscar was only kidnapped because they wanted to carry the Relic around in the first place. Oscar is, admittedly, helping to turn Salem’s henchmen against her, but c’mon, that’s both ridiculous when it comes to a character like Hazel and, at the end of the day, pretty useless given Salem’s power. Hazel goes OOC to turn against her and Emerald finally leaves? Big deal. Salem has grimm soup currently creating countless monsters. Hazel gets the Relic back somehow? Again, it never would have been in Salem’s hands if the group had just put it in the vault/not come to Atlas in the first place. Right now they’re just working to fix the damage that’s already been done.
What has the group accomplished since they got to Atlas? Only telling the world about Salem and, as said, I’m not convinced that’s a good thing. Everything else has actively hurt their allies, or is a reaction to someone else’s ideas/resources/power (like using Ironwood’s plan and tower, or Whitley and Klein doing the most for Nora and Penny). The group isn’t active and when they are they make the worst possible decisions: let’s lie to Ironwood, let’s randomly trust Robyn, let’s stop Atlas from leaving, etc. Which could be an awesome thing to explore when your heroes are a bunch of inexperienced teenagers fighting a thousand year war! But that would require calling them out on how badly they’ve done and then, crucially, changing their behavior. Too bad Ren’s points have been forgotten for another “You only lost to Team RWBY because you’re not Friends ™” speech :/

Analysis of Ween’s ‘Ocean Man’
Ocean Man is a song that Ween has described as something that formed together like magic falling into place. But like all magic, there are hidden mechanisms behind it that necessitate going being the scientific method. For a long time, this song has remained pleasurable but incomprehensible, yet I plan to decode it. The first life of “Ocean man, take me by the hand, lead me to the land that you understand”, while also being a reference to Echoes by Pink Floyd, is also an invitation to be taken to a world of wonder and whimsy. The world being referred to is what I call the ‘village under the sea.’ It was a term coined by Jacques Cousteau to describe his endeavors to build underwater habitats for humanity to experimentally live in, but it also applies as a general ontology of the ocean in respect to humanity’s place as a lifeform on Earth. It asks of us to view the sea in the ways that Indigenous Polynesians have, in that there is no separation of place by terrain: The sea is just as much habitable land as any continent or island.
In asking us to understand the land, we’re also being asked to understand the sea for ultimately there is no difference between land and sea other than that which comes from trying to objectify the oceans. “The voyage to the corner of the globe is a real trip” is contradictory because there are no corners to the ocean: It’s an entity with no boundaries except constructed ones. The trip you’ll go on is one that’ll take you into a worldview where you’ll be able to understand that you cannot objectify something as mighty and powerful as the ocean. Given the psychedelic context of this album, you will indeed ‘trip.’
“The crust of a tan man imbibed by the sand, soaking up the first of the land.” This is an indirect description of humanity, especially a man in the Western world in 1997. The human is imbibed by the sand, meaning the hot, dry sand is absorbing him, leading to him having crusty skin like someone who has tanned for too long. He’s soaking up the thirst of the land because man has become so familiarized with the essentialism of dry land that he forgets that life has managed to live successfully outside of it. It all reverts back to the desire to deconstruct these destructive Western terrain classifications that stopped us from appreciating the impossibly complex ecological harmony of the life that exists just below the surface of the ocean. The surface of the ocean has historically acted, to Westerners, as just inhospitable land that needed to be crossed. Cousteau radically challenged this view by using popular science as a medium to explore and document the ancient world that was right beneath us, introducing the technology of scuba to better aid the cause of inciting civilian interest in the oceans and thus a sentimental value to their preservation beyond the unforeseen economic ones.
“Can you see through the wonder of amazement at the overman?” This references the concept by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche of the Übermensch originally described in Thus Spoke Zarathustra, which simply defined is a man who rises above the dogmatic moralism of conventional Christianity to create his own values that, out of resistance, refuses to impose it upon others. In the context of this song, it can have two meanings: One, the ‘ocean man’ as a figure is fascinated by seeing this external overman figure and is being questioned as to whether not he can overcome their own illusionment for what they really are, positioning the ‘ocean man’ as a symbol of native marine life and the overman as the Western man who has historically not cared for or acknowledged them. The transcendence of Christian morality could, in this case, be an acceptance of a worldview that objectifies the ocean and marginalizes ocean life and leads to the indirect destruction of Cousteau’s ‘village under the sea.’
Two, the ‘ocean man’ is also the overman, and that seeing through the wonder of amazement is recognizing that, as a human being, the ocean man sees the overman as a picture of what he can become if he sheds his Western ontology of the ocean and embraces it as a sacred element to his existence. Literally, this is transcending centuries of what Christian moralism has made of the oceans as mere barriers in the path of evangelization: To become the overman, the ocean man must embrace a journey to transcend this dogmatism and find a new morality constructed on his terms and his relationship with the ocean.
“The crust is elusive when it casts forth to the childlike man.” We’ve established before that the crust refers to the residue of life adjusting to living entirely on land, and it becoming elusive means it's hard to find. Reference to the ‘childlike man’ could be referring to a man who has shed these imposed ideas of how they should interact with the world, and thus become once again like a child with unbridled curiosity and earnestness about the world. The child doesn’t objectify the sea and obtains an ontology akin to Indigenous Polynesians, albeit in a much more microcosmic environment.
The childlike man is equivalent to a Western scientist, like Cousteau, who takes up a sudden and profound interest in the ocean and specifically the village that lies at the bottom of it. The crust is no longer there because the childlike man isn’t limiting his idea of home to just dry land, thereby minimizing the crust. It’s not a stretch to believe that, in some way, the character of SpongeBob functions as a cultural icon functions in this way: He’s extremely curious and earnest about the world in a way that differentiated him from most protagonists of ‘90s cartoons loaded with postmodern cynicism. SpongeBob is also the highly relatable protagonist in which we’re exposed to the world of Bikini Bottom, another representation of the village under the sea.
“The sequence of a life form braised in the sand, soaking up the thirst of the land” Braising is a method of cooking which involves lightly frying something and then slowly stewing it in a closed container. The light frying is the intermediate period of moving away from that Western, landlocked crust and preparing to enter into the village under the sea. While the slow stewing is, like a sponge, absorbing the ecological order of everything around you. The goal of this is to reorganize your idea of ecosophy (philosophy of ecological order) away from what Western ways of life have traditionally concerned themselves with.
The thirst of the land you’re soaking up takes on a double meaning here, in that you’re now soaking up the subconscious desire man has to understand the world it has moved away from. It desires to understand the ocean as a simultaneously new and old frontier: One more mysterious than even our own star systems. The thirst of the land is now being quenched by the childlike man who sheds the crust of Western natural ontologies and pursues intimacy with that it has evolved out of so many eons ago.
The last part of the song I want to touch on is every verse beginning with directly addressing this figure known as the ‘ocean man.’ I’ve heard some analyses before say that he’s a mythological hydrophile who symbolizes liberty at sea away from the laws and restrictions imposed upon land, but I think it's more specific than that. The 'ocean man' just refers to anyone who teaches you to rethink the oceans, whether that be Ween with the entire album, Jacques Cousteau and his series of pop science documentaries, or Stephen Hillenburg and his titanic cartoon series. All of these make the effort to try and change how Western society has historically thought of the ocean through some form of inquiry
In Ween’s case, I think it was some psychic force that influenced them on that night in Jersey Shore to write an album that pushed culture not only sonically but also subliminally like in the ways I’ve expressed in this analysis. All of it was made to make you understand that there's a village under the sea as much as there are villages above the land, and it’s ironic how recognizing this is considered ‘alien’ when this worldview is far more ancient than what we’re used to.
With this understanding, it makes a lot of sense why this song was chosen to be the ending of the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, as the show was a culmination of influences that stretched from Cousteau to Ween on Hillenburg’s life. And what does SpongeBob attempt to do at the end of the day but teach us to become overmen to the ontologies imposed upon us? To children, SpongeBob is a character who first fills his heart with love and then tries to be himself as a departure from media that previously told children to be themselves blindly. What if your self is corrupted? What if it’s crusted from being so used to something as great and magnificent as the ocean being objectified and desanctified? When you take the ocean man’s hand (Stephen Hillenburg’s), you become SpongeBob, and your heart fills with a familiar sense of earnestness that he felt when he studied marine biology.

The Wielder of the Staff
Penny isn’t going to retrieve the staff from the Winter Maiden’s Vault. She’s going to open it, either this volume or next, that much is for certain - you can’t build up to a grand finale for RWBY without all four relics ending up in play. But it won’t be Penny walking out of that vault with a relic.
One of the key themes we’ve covered, in Penny’s character as well as in the Atlas arc more broadly, is about free will and choice - who you serve, why you serve, and what you do to serve. And ultimately, though Penny undoubtedly feels a debt and a responsibility to protect Mantle and Remnant more broadly - she never wanted this. She took on the mantle of Winter Maiden not because she was groomed to, like Winter, or because she wanted it, like Cinder - she took it because she had to.
We see her struggling to come to terms with the burden she’s placed on herself because of her selflessness in the first two chapters of Volume 8, but we don’t just see that. We see Penny’s central character flaw coming to a head - that even now, her destiny is being written not by her, but by the actions of General Ironwood.
(Hm. Two characters both starting with a P that ended up in contestation for Maiden powers, with a character arc of Destiny. That bodes well.)
Crucially, Penny is going to, over the course of this volume and the next, finally have a chance to carve out her own destiny - her ideals, her wishes, and most importantly, her limits. The points at which she learns it’s okay to say no to taking on more responsibility than you can handle.
And, as a result, she’s going to say no to taking the Staff of Creation out of the Vault.
But we know the staff will come into play, so who’s going to take it?
I don’t know whether it’s too early in the story (and brothers, we’re 8 years in at this point) to say with any certainty whether who initially claims the relic will be ultimately relevant to the finale and whatever happens to the four relics, but it’s certainly clear from the Volume 5 finale that there’s a significant portion of symbolism allotted to it - even if just to mark the emergence of a relic as an important moment with no further connotation.
Tumblr media
When Yang emerges with the Lamp from the Vault, she is raised up above the others - figuratively as well as literally. The first wielder of the Lamp since the Great War, held up by Jinn herself.
Remember Blake’s little speech to Sun earlier in Volume 5:
“I remember getting to know Ruby and thinking, this girl is the embodiment of purity. After a while, I saw Weiss was defiance. And Yang was Strength.”
Yang claimed the relic not because she was the only one there, but because she was Strength. She had what Raven lacked, and Blake’s speech came full circle. Yang is elevated onto the central platform, in a way that only three others even experience - Raven, as the Spring Maiden, Leo, as Haven’s Headmaster, and Oscar (for fairly obvious reasons).
Tumblr media
Now, you may wonder where I’m going with this. Salem has the Lamp; the Vault isn’t open. Even if Penny refuses to take it, what’s that got to do with what’s going on right now?
Well, the person who claimed the Relic of Knowledge? She’s on the ground. She’s separate from the events in Atlas, and she’s not going anywhere near the Staff. The symbolism in the intro couldn’t be more apparent:
Tumblr media
Everyone else, on the other hand?
Tumblr media
I already ruled Penny out, but everyone else here could be in contention to wield the Staff. Although, personally, I’m going to narrow it down to two:
Nora
Tumblr media
A lot of people thought Nora was getting flags as a potential maiden last volume, from her resemblance to Fria to her possible Mantle origins to her vocal disagreement with Ironwood. It, obviously, didn’t pan out that way. But there’s still a couple things in her favour for her claiming the Staff of Creation:
“Always hoping that a lightning bolt is gonna save you from this gravity”
That’s the line from the V7 intro that perked a lot of people’s ears, and I still think it applies, possibly even more so. More than anyone, Nora represents lightning. Her main literary allusion is Thor, the Norse God of Thunder. Her semblance is powered by electricity, and her weapon generates it. In the history of Robyn calling highly amusing and accurate nicknames for our cast, Lightning Bolt could easily apply to Nora.
Gravity obviously applies to the weight of the severe situation our heroes find themselves in, but that’s not just all. It also, obviously, applies to the huge flags we’re getting that Atlas could plummet to the ground, destroying both it and Mantle and handing Salem a huge victory in her quest to ruin humanity.
That’s not guaranteed yet. If we expect volume 8 to go the way of volume 3, where there is a significant defeat for our heroes, that doesn’t automatically equal a complete and arbitrary annihilation. After all, Salem could crash Monstra into Atlas and achieve pretty much the same goal. The key thing that came out of volume 3 was that Beacon was destroyed - but not unreclaimable. There were slivers of hope, and the smaller soul remained.
And that’s where Nora could come in. She’s been a stalwart protector of the people, especially Mantle, and if she were wielding the relic, she’d definitely not want to doom them by using it - and, equally, not doom them by losing the relic. Nora was there when Neo took the lamp - she’s going to know that the same thing could happen, and so, she will save us from gravity - by using the staff to lower Atlas safely to the ground before taking it out of the vault.
Weiss
“After a while, I saw Weiss was defiance.”
This feeds more specifically into the possible theory that each relic will be claimed by a member of team RWBY. While Yang has maiden flags from Raven’s possible death, after Penny gaining the Winter powers and Ruby mastering her silver eyes, the RWBY maiden ending looks unlikely. But anyone can claim a relic.
Weiss has matured a great deal throughout the storyline of RWBY, but the ultimate character motivation for her has stayed consistent: she wants to reclaim her family’s legacy and restore it to one comparable to her grandfather’s, in opposition to the mismanagement of her parents. She is defiant towards them, to her brother and sister, towards Ruby, towards the general trend of history, and towards General Ironwood.
Tumblr media
“NONE of this matters right now!”
Tumblr media
”Not friends. Family.”
So why Weiss, and not Nora?
Well, going back to the theory with the relics being claimed each by one of the members of Team RWBY, Salem is their end villain:
Tumblr media
It’s team RWBY who are together confronting Salem in Ironwood’s office, and it’s team RWBY who’ll be stood together confronting her at the very end of all this. To do that, you need the relics.
To be sure, Nora is a member of the main cast - she’ll have an end villain to face off against, just like the rest of our protagonists - but even though it seems Tyrian is shaping up to be Qrow’s, Salem is very clearly not Nora’s. Arguably, we saw in Volume 5 that Nora is the only person capable of going toe-to-toe with Hazel:
Tumblr media
“I don’t need him to hurt. I just need him to GO DOWN.”
Nora makes sense as Hazel’s eventual final foe - his origin story is being driven to work for Salem by his grief and possessiveness over his sister, who died as a huntress-in-training. Nora lost her teammate - a huntress-in-training - precisely because of Salem. We know she’s an orphan, and homeless - she likely has lost a great deal of people to the grimm. Morally, she’s the polar opposite to Hazel - someone whose hardship and grief made her a protector of the people, rather than someone on a doomed quest for vengeance for someone who would never have wanted it.
So if we rule out Nora for that sake, why Weiss, and not Ruby or Blake? Well, for one, Weiss has far more personal investment in Atlas as a whole.
Tumblr media
“This is my home. And I’m not giving it up without a fight.”
For Weiss’ own character arc to complete as we eventually move towards a resolution and a departure from Atlas, her family needs to survive. Jacques is fairly irrelevant, and his death would matter least - but Willow, Winter and Whitley need to survive, and the Schnee family needs to begin healing. That doesn’t square itself with Atlas falling to the ground and millions dying. But it could square itself with Atlas being lowered enough to survive without the Staff, and Salem still making off with it in order to attack Vacuo.
Weiss’ semblance also thematically fits with the relic of Creation - she has a mastery of dust, and her glyphs are used to create a range of different things. Her arc points now towards creating something new - a new future for her family, for the SDC, and for Atlas. It would make sense.
For their own relics, Ruby and Blake make more sense being involved with Vale and Vacuo. While Blake is from Menagerie, not Vacuo, the Sword of Destruction would resonate well with her character arc. It’s a symbol of how she, and the faunus, have grown - the power to destroy, but rather than used angrily and blindly like Adam would, used carefully, with great thought. As well as this, the symbolism of the sword - taking up arms and fighting, rather than running away.
And Ruby is just obviously choice. She’s the central character of the Vale arc, one of her most defining traits is determination - the choice to never give up and keep moving forward, that we’ve heard referenced more than once post-Vol 3. But, if you’re wanting a bit more in the way of arguable evidence - who’s younger than the rest of their team of four, is pure of heart, makes choices that fundamentally determine everyone’s paths, and ends up with a crown?
Tumblr media
So that’s where I’m staking my claim. Yang, the Strong, giver of Knowledge. Weiss, the Defiant, guardian of Creation. Ruby, the Pure, defender of Choice. Blake, the ???, arbiter of Destruction.
The only thing we’re missing is what embodiment Blake actually is.

RWBY Volume 8 Chapter 2 Recap
“Refuge” ----------
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the Atlas prison, Qrow, who looks at the bloody talisman of Clover, listens to Robyn Hill says to Jacques Schnee that this is all his fault, saying all she wanted was to bring Atlas together, to give them a chance at a better life, but he stood in way of that. Jacques replied by saying that he was a victim, he admits to being tricked and used, also going on to say that although his hands are figuratively not clean, at least he is no murderer, referring to Qrow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robyn tells Jacques that Qrow didn’t kill anyone, and she wasn’t going to be lectured, calling Jacques “a snake with a mustache” who helped Arthur Watts tear Mantle apart. Watts, who was laying down on his prison seat, says that they are all stuck together now, Jacques replies by saying that he knows the right people and knows that his son Whitley Schnee, is calling them as he speaks, but before he could say another word, Robyn punches the hard light cell by Jacques, yelling at him to shut up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just then, three Atlas guards arrive to Watts’ cell, when they got, Watts asked if they realized they caught me, and one of the guards hits him with the back of their gun, knocking out and taking him away. Robyn says that she hates not being able to do anything, Qrow then says that they can do something, by killing the man that brought them their, that being Ironwood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of Ironwood, he was on the news, the Atlas reporter says that the people of Mantle are scared and perplexed by the sudden withdraw of military personal, especially with a massive Grimm horde outside the kingdom, saying that it feels like the end of days, just then, Joanna walked by and took the microphone from the reporter, and looks at the camera, saying to everyone in Mantle that Ironwood has abandon all of them, but the Happy Huntresses have not, telling them to gather as much food and supplies they need to stay warm and head for the Mantle crater, saying that with the Grimm making their way into the city, they can hold the line if they all come together, if not, then they will all just be targets for the Grimm outside the kingdom. “It’s time to show your teeth, Mantle” - Joanna Greenleaf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Team Yang made it to Pietro’s pharmacy, and when they opened the door for their new equipment, it made Yang have a big smile on her face saying that Ruby’s team is really missing out. Afterwards, Yang and Oscar were riding on a hover bike, in which she did a flip loop trick with him holding onto her, but tasting a bit of her hair in the process, all while Jaune and Ren were riding on their own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Team Yang tries to evacuate a part of Mantle, suddenly, screams from citizens are heard as they run away from two Grimm, Jaune then activates and throws a device that holds up a hard light shield, blocking the Grimms path and giving Ren the chance to strike them down. “Way better than a hover bike” - Jaune Arc
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oscar asks Yang if the Grimm have already pushed that far into the city, she says that she thinks those two were just from the other night, she then asks Ren if Jaune uses his Aura Amplification on him, could he mask everyone’s emotions there, Ren says that it’s worth a shot, but a long trip through Mantle. Jaune approved of the plan, saying that it will be a Grimm free journey all the way to the carter, however, one lady asked Yang if they really need to sack up with those “animals in the slums” and that she would feel more safer up in Atlas, Yang says that she is sure that the lady would be, but “the people up top” decided that her along with the people of Mantle, aren’t worth the trouble, saying that the Faunus on the other hand and willing to help any way they can, regardless if some people deserve it or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the now masked emotion people of Mantle, along with Team Yang while Ren and Jaune were controlling it, the lady from before kept complaining softly, Oscar says to himself, or rather to Ozpin, that it shouldn’t be this difficult to cooperate, Ozpin replies by saying that it’s something that he is really concerned about, Oscar didn’t want to hear this voice at the moment, Ozpin goes on to say that Oscar, along with everyone else has every right to be upset with him and that he apologizes for leaving, Oscar says that he wasn’t upset that Ozpin left, he was upset that he came back, going on to say he started to feel like himself, not who he was before, but who he is now, and that felt like he was apart of the team, Ozpin says that he understands, even though it didn’t feel like he was with him, he was never truly gone, and that Oscar is gaining control of his remaining magic, recollecting his lost held memories, meaning their souls are still on the path to becoming one soul, Oscar then says that he doesn’t want that, and Ozpin replies by saying neither does he. Ren’s semblance started to fade, Jaune asked if he was okay, Ren says that it’s just a lot to focus on, Jaune tried to cheer him up, but Ren says that he doesn’t need a pep talk from him, just focus. Ozpin then says that they need to find a way to work together, not just him and Oscar, but all of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, May Marigold helped Ruby’s Team get into the shipping area, Nora thanked May for coming with them, May says “don’t mention it”, saying that once Robyn knew about Amity Tower, she wouldn’t shut up about it and she would want them all to get it up and running and get the world talking again, also saying that Fiona Thyme is helping Team Yang in her stead, which left Nora feeling a bit uneasy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weiss explains that Snowshoe Shipping is a Schnee Dust Company subsidiary, where the drones there report to the company itself and not Ironwood, the pneumatic tubes help dust crates to go straight to Atlas, and all the team has to do is find the one to the military, Blake jokingly asked Weiss if there was any building in Atlas that Weiss’ family doesn’t own, Weiss says that that isn’t relevant at the moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby went to check on Penny afterwards, Penny tells Ruby that she doesn’t like when friends fight, but when Ruby thought she meant with Yang and the others, she meant Winter and Ironwood, she says that they were their friends, but then the Ace Ops attacked them. When Penny mentioned what Ironwood said about people dying because her, Ruby immediately said that it was a lie, that he was just trying to hurt her, Penny says that she was the protector of Mantle, but she is more than that now, and she wishes she wasn’t. Ruby holds Penny’s hands and says that Penny is still Penny, and by becoming the Winter Maiden, she did protect Mantle, Penny smiled and thanked her as the two f them hugged.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nora wonders how the tube system works, Weiss demonstrated how simple it would if someone to lay back on the tube, which she did, but before she could even say anything else, Nora pressed a blue button that sucked Weiss through the tube to Atlas.
Tumblr media
Nora wanted to try it out herself from the looks of it.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, while evacuating, Fiona contacts others in Mantle to help out in anyway in each sector, noticing that Fiona is tired, Joanna says, while putting fire dust crystals in a furnace, that Robyn would be proud of Fiona for her hard work, Fiona feels like Joanna should do the work after “flexing” on the news earlier, Joanna laughs and says that she was just trying to get the word out, and that it looks like its working.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Team Yang arrived with the other citizens of Mantle, Fiona said it was great that they cleared Sector 7 so quickly, she said honestly that she didn’t think they would make it without their teammates, which made Team Yang feel uneasy and causing Ren to walk off, Yang says that they’re doing just fine, Oscar asks where are all the people going, Fiona says that her, along with the rest of the Happy Huntress are working to get them into house or shelters, also using old mine shafts which a large portion of community is trying to make a living condition. Joanna says that looting the SDC refineries is their best source of the dust, the fortunate part is no one is getting arrest during all of this and it was an uneasy feeling knowing all the Grimm were out there circling, wondering what they are waiting for. The old man from before, who was Fiona’s uncle, tells Fiona that there was another fight breaking out between the citizens, which Joanna volunteered to break up, Fiona then gets a notification from Crimson, another member of the Happy Huntresses, saying that him and his group have spotted Grimm in the East, in which Team Yang would volunteer to take care of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterwards, Yang was luring a flying Grimm to her, attacking it while riding the hover bike, while Oscar and Ren were on the other side of the block, waiting for the signal, when Yang and Ren rode where the bridge was, the flying Grimm swooped down from under the bridge, trying to attack them, but before he could, Oscar threw a dust bomb under the flying Grimm, causing it to hit up under the bridge, giving Jaune the chance to deliver a final strike, finishing it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yang informs Fiona that they’ve taken care of the Grimm of the East, but Fiona says that there are Grimm now in the West, and that the huntsmen could use assistance, Yang says that they’ll take care of it, Oscar says that it’s the negativity in the atmosphere, Salem’s forces may not be moving, but that’s enough to attract straggling Grimm, Ren tiredly says that they’re not finished as they all see three Grimm headed for them, but before they could even fight, they all stopped and ran the other way, Team Yang wondered why they would do that, and that they’ve never see Grimm act like that before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then suddenly, out of nowhere, the Grimm that Salem sent swooped down and attacked Oscar off the hover bike, Oscar kicked it trying to break free from its grasp, but it was useless as this Grimm was too powerful, attacking Oscar, depleting his aura, this was no ordinary Grimm, Yang, Jaune and Ren tried to rescue Oscar, but the Grimm used him as a shield giving it the chance to counter their attacks, Jaune says that Grimm aren’t that smart, Ren then ordered The Grimm to give Oscar back, but the Grimm.....
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Grimm said no.... The team was shocked to hear a Grimm speak, then it started to transform, sprouting wings, grabbing Oscar by its jaws and flying away to Salem, Yang, Jaune and Ren rush to the hover bikes to rescue him, Fiona asks what was going on with the West sector, Yang said to Fiona that it was an emergency, when Fiona asked Yang what kind of emergency is it, Yang just said that she wouldn’t believe her if she told her as they chase down this new abnormal Grimm. -------- What is the new abnormal Grimm? Or rather, who is this new abnormal Grimm?
