Story time!
Several years ago the Brazilian government did an extensive study on the health of its older citizens.
My eightysomething grandma participated in the study, and when I called her to say hi she started telling me about it. Her description of things went something like this:
When they were testing for senility and cognitive ability the nurse held up a ball and asked me what shape it was. And I was like "It's a sphere." and they were like "I would have accepted 'a circle' but that works too." And I was like "But it's NOT a circle, it's a sphere. Circles are two-dimensional and this is 3D. Get it right."

CALL TO PARTICIPATION: How Much Daily Exercise Is Enough?
After a few years working at Full Sail University, sitting every day at our cubes, I think eight out of the 12 of us were suffering from some form of back strain or other related issues. I don’t know if my teaching colleagues at the public schools I taught at in California had similar problems, but then I didn’t sit next to them all day/every day for years. But something was different sitting at…

Just Having Your Cell phone Around Is Depleting Your Mind Limit
Computerized innovation is coordinated into our lives — seemingly, to say the least. On the one hand, new opportunities for our work life, relationships, health, and more are provided by our capacity to connect with others and access information at any time.

Hey you. You know you should be doing The Thing. I don't want to do The Thing, either. But we can sit down and do it for 2 minutes together. Then we can do it for 5 minutes. Then 10. And so on and so forth until it is done. I'll be coming back to reiterate this.
To whoever needs to hear it: it does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be world altering. It just needs to be done. And I'll sit with you while you do The Thing.
Now go. Stop scrolling. Go work on The Thing. I'll be back to check on you and cheer us both on.

Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

there is nothing wrong with being mediocre. there is nothing wrong with not being the best at everything you do. there is no guilt in doing the bare minimum because you have no energy to do more than that. “living your life to the fullest” can mean different things for you at different times in your life. sometimes, it is achieving your goals and fulfilling your purpose, and sometimes, it is allowing yourself to rest and just get through it.
you deserve the space to simply be. to exist, to witness, to breathe, and to find peace.
