let's say snape did ask voldemort to spare harry potter, and, by some miracle, doesn't get cursed on the spot. what then?
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches..." the hag hisses in Severus' memories, dragged to the forefront of his mind by the Dark Lord's consuming, imposing power. "Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies..."
He stumbles backward as the Dark Lord releases him, jabs a heel into the ground to force his body into stillness. The contact is good, grounding. He is here for a purpose, and he will not make a fool of himself before the Dark Lord.
"I know of the prophecy already, Severus," the Dark Lord says, patiently. Indulgently, really, and it is glorious. To be treated with this level of respect by the Dark Lord himself... Mulciber must be eating his hat, and Potter, Black and their little pets rolling in the graves that surely awaited them. "Your having delivered it to me is the reason I have deigned to offer you both my Mark and your choice of reward."
"Of course, my Lord," Severus says, "and I thank you for both."
He flexes his arm at his side, already branded by skull and snake, half scabbed-over, before bending at the waist in a deep bow.
"Rise," the Dark Lord tells him, and Severus catches the amusement in his tone. "Lucius tells me you have great potential, and I believe you will be... most useful to me."
"Thank you, my Lord," Severus says, reverently, and squashes any further daydreams of spitting on pureblood ponces and grinding headstones beneath his boots. He needs to be clear-headed for this. He hardly presumes to be indispensable, but the Dark Lord has named him useful, has promised him a reward. This opportunity, this sort of power, the sort of respect that he would be able to command as one of the Dark Lord's trusted and used... it cannot—must not—be squandered.
"Have you chosen, Severus? Money, glory? Women, perhaps... no. You look above such things, do you not?" The Dark Lord's face twisted at that, a fleeting smirk setting itself across his unsettling features. "Ah. Knowledge is what tempts you... yes. Unadulterated, uncensored knowledge. You could have the contents of the most coveted Dark Arts libraries in your hands. Power the likes of which most people could never dream of. What will you ask of me, Severus?"
His tongue itches to answer, but the Dark Lord continues.
"I do not make a habit of granting requests such as these. Your brethren who have earned the privilege have asked for banal, plebian things or they have pandered to me with silly trinkets and petty refusals. Will you follow in their footsteps? What will you ask of me, Severus?"
The Dark Lord lowers his gaze, ever-so-gentle, presses into Severus' mind once more. A smile flits across his face as he skims through each layer of thought, memory and consciousness, tugging and pulling as he chooses. He snags something, holds tight to it, and Severus is overcome by pure, blinding rage as his life, shown in flashes of humiliation, pain, anger, anger, embarrassment, injustice, so much anger, plays out before him.
"Revenge. Yes, that must be it. You want them to pay for what they've done," the Dark Lord. "That filthy Muggle father of yours, those disgusting blood traitors, yes, all of them will pay. Is that what you would ask of me, Severus?"
The Dark Lord holds his mind in a vice grip, tight, harsh, painful. Had it been a physical hold, Severus would no doubt have been nearly to his knees at this point, gasping for air, begging and prodding at his Lord's arms to allow him to go free. It is entirely within his own mind, however, and with regards to Occlumency, Severus is particularly resilient. As the Dark Lord pries and clutches, his eerie red gaze fixed on Severus' own black stare, he calls to his mouth the words he will answer with, but is silenced before he can speak them.
"No. Their blood would be wasted on you. I could make you—no. No matter," the Dark Lord says, releasing him once more with all the gentleness of a hard shove. "This, you may consider a gift. I will impart to you a secret, Severus, for you have granted me the information which makes this particular endeavour possible. I am going to Godric's Hollow tonight, and I will destroy the creature that Albus Dumbledore presumes will vanquish me."
"God—"
"Silence, Severus. This to to your benefit, you understand. The child must die, of course, but that filthy blood traitor Potter—I will kill him, and through me, you may have your revenge, and thus, you will be free to ask for what else your heart desires."
His head spins, and the Dark Lord cares not, fixing him with a burning red gaze that grows ever impatient.
"What will you ask of me, Severus?"
He can think of a million things he wants, a thousand things that would catapult him into the life he wanted, without having to claw his up from beneath everyone else's feet.
Power, for one. Respect, esteem, the Dark Lord's favour.
He could ask for any of them, he knows which of them he would choose.
The memories crowd his mind, though, unbidden, shaken free by the Dark Lord's rough handling of his innermost thoughts, his mentioning of Godric's Hollow. He doesn't even need to close his eyes to see her. Lily, laying on the grass beside him. Lily, sitting next to him in the Library, laughing over something or other as they breeze through their Potions homework. Lily, turning him away at the entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room. Lily, turning her back on him for James fucking Potter and his band of assholes.
Another thought chases them, even more unwanted and unexpected than its predecessors—Lily, body broken and cold, dead on the floor of her home between her husband and child, because of course, of course, she would throw herself between her family—James bloody Potter and his fucking spawn—and the Dark Lord himself.
He cannot ask for her life.
It would be madness. Folly. An impossible request that would follow him for the rest of his time in the Dark Lord's service. He will not squander this opportunity, he will not ruin this for himself as so many things have been ruined before, he will not lose his only chance—
The Dark Lord looks at him, and Severus anticipates the rustling, the grip of thought on his mind and quickly, quietly buries it all, as he blurts, "Lily."
Severus Snape is a fool.
The Dark Lord knows this now. He must.
"You desire... the girl?" the Dark Lord asks.
Severus must be an imbecile. A thrice-damned, hellbound, cotton-brained dunderhead.
"Very well," the Dark Lord muses. "It would be a fitting addition to your revenge. From what I have been told, she was your Mudblood first, was she not?"
Severus nods, mute.
His?
Never. Not really.
"I shall spare her life, and you will have her."
"Thank you, my Lord," Severus rasps, the words bubbling up through a dry, dusty throat, and automatically falls into a bow. He is a fool. "You are too kind."
"Kind..." the Dark Lord rolls the word around his mouth, and spits it as though it is particularly vile. "Hardly. It is only what you deserve."
"Thank you, my Lord." Severus says, and turns to leave.
"You were not dismissed, Severus," he says, and Severus turns back, immediately.
"I'm so—"
"No matter, and straighten up. Tell me, Severus. You think me kind?"
He swallows. "My lord is most generous—"
The Dark Lord stops him, regards him with what little humanity remains in his gaze. Laughs.
Severus stiffens, the hairs on the back of his neck raising at the grating sound.
"Join me. Tonight. You will further prove your usefulness, and kill James Potter yourself. I will spare your precious Mudblood her life."
His stomach rolls in protest at the thought, conflicting thoughts flying through his mind, a cacophony of "She already thinks the worst of you," playing against a backdrop of Lily Potter cradling the bodies of her dead husband and son. Guilt wells up in his throat, swimming up his oesophagus just the same as bile, and he says, "Yes, my lord. Thank you, my Lord."
Petty refusal, the Dark Lord had said, but such was never an option. Severus had sold his soul, and the devil does not bargain. In exchange for Lily Potter's life, he must kill her husband and give up any hope of ever being a good man in her eyes, and the Dark Lord knows it.
Kind, Severus had said. A foolish notion.
They enter Godric's Hollow that night with a bang. Quite literally. The Dark Lord laughs in the face of their wards, and Severus surveys them with pity, and mild disgust. Were they meant to be found? Then, the Dark Lord crows about having their Secret Keeper under his thumb, and the Potters' lack of security becomes an afterthought to betrayal and lies and a sick sense of satisfaction that the Marauders had fallen apart, after all.
The Dark Lord gestures, and even through the smoke, Severus' aim is impeccable. His wand arm raises, and hatred is on his tongue, propelled by years of humiliation and pain, the memories of hanging pantsless above the Black Lake and watching Lily Evans on James Potter's arm, and then, dragging up truly Unforgivable magic behind them. He's already mouthing the Avada behind his mask when the green light floods the room and the Dark Lord finishes Severus' sentence for him.
James Potter's body drops to the ground and as Severus sees the Dark Lord standing triumphant, wand held high, he knows that Potter was never his to kill. The Dark Lord gave, and the Dark Lord took away. Generosity? A pathetic trait to attribute to him.
"Stand aside, girl," he rasps, and Severus' neck jerks. Lily stands between them and the crib, tears already welling in her eyes as she looks frantically between them and James fucking Potter.
The vision plays behind his eyes again, Lily, sobbing, crying, bereft.
Her husband has died and she will not stand aside. Severus knows it. If it will save her son's life, she will sacrifice herself over and over again.
"Stand aside," the Dark Lord commands, again, and he raises his wand to kill her, if not to toss her aside and Severus, because he is a fucking fool, who cannot stand to watch the girl who was once his best friend die, interrupts.
"The child, my Lord," he rasps, and hopes in his heart that if he does not succeed in convincing his master that they are both deserving of life, she will take the brat and run.
"It must die!" the Dark Lord screams, and Lily does not run, she scrambles to the crib, clutches the child to her breast.
"It has power—" he tries, but the Dark Lord will not be reasoned with.
"To vanquish me! It is—" the Dark Lord hisses, wand raised.
"A weapon!" Severus cries, and damns the boy as he has damned himself. "To use against Dumbledore, if he has power to vanquish you, he can be used against—"
"Dumbledore."
It is this that gets through to him, but he does not lower his wand. He flicks it, deliberately, as harshly as he does anything and the child comes speeding into his arms, wailing ever louder. Lily dashes after him, but a deliberate swish of the Dark Lord's wand sends her careening into Severus instead.
He looks into the brat's face, and Severus' breath catches in his throat as twin emerald gazes announce their upset.
Lily's is trained on him as she struggles in his grip, and he needs her to stop, stop fighting, stop kicking, stop making herself a fucking target, so he says, quickly, quietly, harshly, "He'll kill you both if you don't stop."
The baby stares defiantly at the Dark Lord, wailing and screaming as much as he dares. He lowers his wand. Lily stops struggling.
"Yes. You... you can be used. Dumbledore believes that you will be my downfall... but not if you are raised under my hand."
He laughs again, and the sound nearly sets Lily to fighting afresh. Severus clutches her tighter, and the Dark Lord turns to look at him again. "Come."

Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo [Chapter 3]
Tumblr media
*pic credits to respective artist*
His arms touching his torn body softly as that loathsome familiar soothing cadence of his smooth baritone filled the water-logged bathroom like a ballad of the angels.
“Draco..please…”
He remembered ignoring the surprising hint of pain in his otherwise stoic words, a crack in that infernal glacial mask.
“Don’t touch me.”
He remembers the throat clogging fear, his wand clasped in a death grip which was quaking like a dry leaf caught in a thunderstorm that fateful day. Those twinkling cerulean eyes boring into his soul like a knife plunged in butter.
“Draco.. please let me help you.”
“No! You don’t understand. I have to do this. I have to kill you. Or else, he will kill me.”
“No.”
That voice coming like the toll of a Church bell. The man in black appearing like a phantom behind him, his solid presence blanketing him in his protective magic like it always had.
With all of the tattered courage left in him, Draconis Lucius Malfoy had resisted the urge to throw himself in the man’s arms just like he always had since the past sixteen years.
The headmaster’s haunting plea and the man’s emotionless reply had had him waking up screaming for several following nights.
“Severus please…”
“Avada Kedavra.”

Queen of Quiet Nothing by ThetaWolfe
female harry potter , game of thrones cross over , 4th year GOF
While in the arena with the dragon, there's an attack by the death eaters and Harry and Snape get sent with a portkey along with a bunch of dragon eggs. But things go wrong and they end up in an icy wasteland and Snape isn't quite right.
I am absolutely obsessed with this story. It is so well written and had me sobbing at one particular chapter. The plot and character development is amazing. The majority of this story focuses on survival and the two of them learning to get along. I don't think there's an official ship. But if you love fics that feel like a novel and you don't mind gore and survival situations then you need to experience this. You don't need to love Game of Thrones to love this.

Always rooting for the Anti-Hero  ~ Happy Birthday, Professor Snape
~
A new phoenix-themed robe design for AU postwar/headmaster Snape. After the snake theme, the phoenix theme is my favorite one to include into any robes I draw for him. I think it’s kinda fitting, like one big „f*** you“ directed at the ones who made his life miserable, including the late Dumbledore;
„See this? You were the one with the pet-phoenix, but I’m the one who survived your bullshit-schemes, got your job, my freedom, and the trust and gratitude of the boy you deceived and raised to die.“
Ah yes. The power of fanfiction.
Fun fact: The robe is inspired by a dress Taylor Swift wore for the Reputation stadium tour.
AND I FINALLY DREW HIM WITH DA BLACK NAILPOLISH.

what would tom riddle's patronus?
Okay, it took me some time to answer this ask since I needed to spend some time thinking. I didn't really have an answer in mind until your question. It's just something I apparently never thought about. So I was interested in finding the most canon-adjacent answer I can for if Tom Riddle/Voldemort could cast a patronus, what would it be.
So, my approach to finding the right animal was based on a few factors, the first of which:
How exactly is the form your Patronus takes determined?
Because we don't actually get a straight answer in the books. We know Patroni can change with a person, but we don't exactly get an answer on what their form represents and why some couples have matching Patroni.
Basically, I don't know what you expected, Anon, but what you're getting is some rambling about the magical theory behind the Patronus charm followed by why that means Tom gets a certain animal over another.
So, let's start with the basics, the incantation:
"Expecto Patronum"
This is in Latin and literally translates to: "I await/expect a defender"
And Remus Lupin explains what the Patronus charm is as:
“Well, when it works correctly, it conjures up a Patronus,” said Lupin, “which is a kind of anti-dementor — a guardian that acts as a shield between you and the dementor.” ... “The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon — hope, happiness, the desire to survive — but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can’t hurt it. But I must warn you, Harry, that the charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it.”
(POA, page 237)
We also know the patronus is cast by thinking of a happy memory — well, not really. The memory isn't really important; the emotion is. The memory is to help you have the right happy feelings that can fuel a Patronus. "You got to mean it" just like with an unforgivable.
So, what does it tell us about the Patronus:
We have a defender made out of happiness, literally.
This already sounds like something Tom Riddle would struggle with. I don't really see canon Tom Riddle/Voldemort being capable of producing one, but let's assume he can in some hypothetical AU. Let's take a look at a few patroni to see how their form is chosen and why.
Obviously, we have Harry's (and James') stag. A stag symbolizes many things in different cultures, but deer (both Stags and Does, like Lily and Snape) in general symbolize:
The cycle of life and death
Agility and grace
Bravery
Nobility
All this fits the Potters quite well. The nobility and bravery of Gryffindor and the cycle between life and death. Stags actually represent regeneration, as in a return from death, which fits with the Potters' connection to the Paverells and death perfectly.
Stags also symbolize authority, strength, leadership, and fatherhood, while does symbolize femininity, grace, intuition, and devotion. All in all, both animals fit James and Lily well. And while the stag does fit Harry (to a degree), I don't think his Patronus represents him.
I think Harry's patronus is a stag because James' patronus was a stag. Harry was actually convinced his father cast the Patronus when he first saw it in POA. And it makes sense.
I don't remember where I saw this theory, but it essentially was that your patrons would represent a person or an idea that you feel will defend you. It's why certain couples have matching Patroni, why a Patronus can change when you or your feelings about people change.
And Harry, when he casts his Patronus, the idea of his father who he never knew but would have protected him is the idea represented in Harry's Patronus. It's a stag like James' not because Harry and James are so similar (they have very different personalities actually) but because Harry's Patronus is James. It's a stag because James was a stag, and Harry is calling the concept of his father to defend him.
Following this logic, Lily's Patronus is a doe, because she is the doe. Lily's defender is herself. Courageous, noble, graceful and devoted. Lily's devotion to her son is what literally sets the series into motion. The reason she and James match is that they always have. He was always represented by the stag and she was always represented by the doe. Their Patroni aren't matching because of their relationship with each other, but because they are so compatible their Patroni matched from the get-go.
Snape's Patronus is a doe because of Lily. Lily is represented by the doe. As she was Snape's first friend and defender, whenever he calls for a protector, it's Lily.
Let's look at a few other Patroni, like Hermione's otter:
Playfulness
Joy
Family and close-knit friendships
Loyalty
All of this doesn't really sound like Hermione. Ron's Jack Russell Terrier on the other hand:
Loyalty
Courage
Playfulness
Cleverness
Protectiveness
Tanasity
Does sound very in line with who Ron is.
But then who does Hermione's otter represent? Well, an otter is from the weasel family and the list of characteristics looks closer to Ron's list of traits than Hermione's. I think Hermione's otter represents Ron who did step in to defend her since the troll incident in their first year multiple times.
So, where does that leave Tom Riddle?
Well, we established the Patronus becomes your defender, and in Tom's case, it'll be himself. Tom is distrustful and sees himself as more capable than anyone else. Not to mention he never had a real connection or person in his life he could call upon to defend him. So, whatever animal his Patronus is would represent himself as his own defender.
So, which animal represents Tom best?
The first animal I thought of, is of course: the serpent. Snakes are heavily associated with Tom (for obvious reasons) and is an animal we know he has a soft spot for. When looking at what snakes represent, you can see why he is associated with them:
Deceit
Transformation
Power
Regeneration and rebirth (shedding their skin)
Healing (Cadcadeus)
For the most part, the list seems to fit him well. Specifically their association with rebirth and the cycle of life and death by shedding their skin. Deceit and power are also right up Tom's alley. And even transformation considering he rewrote his entire identity to become Voldemort.
But, just "snake" wasn't good enough for me, I wanted to know which kind. And as I wanted his Patronus to be as rare as Harry's stag, I went to the list of official Pottermore possible Patroni to find a snake that is as hard to get in the test as the stag while not being magical.
(Magical Patroni are incredibly rare and to have yourself represented by a magical creature in your Patronus you need to be incredibly unique or incredibly full of yourself. At least, that's how I see it)
And low and behold, there was one on the aforementioned list:
The King Cobra
So I looked up if this snake has any interesting additional unique symbolism that would fit Tom. And, well, there was:
Authority and Leadership
Aggression and Fearlessness
Destruction and Creation
Intelligence and Cunning
Which all in all sounds fitting for Tom Riddle.
I also continued reading and apparently, snakes are associated with lightning by some Native American tribes. And when I saw that I was sold on the idea. Considering how the killing curse is represented by lightning (Harry's scar and the lightning-struck tower being the name of the chapter Dumbledore dies in). It feels appropriate with Tom's connection with snakes.
The King Cobra is actually not really a Cobra and is considered a unique breed of snake, which Tom would approve of. It's also the longest venomous snake and its venom can result in a rapid fatality, as soon as 30 minutes following a bite. It's also a cannibal snake that eats other snakes, including its own kind.
Overall it just fits perfectly, both in traits, symbolism, and how rare and dangerous it is. So, for your question, I think Tom Riddle's Patronus, if he could cast one, would be a King Cobra.

Note
Thank you so much for your recs—they are fantastic! I wondered if you had any for Draco and Harry becoming friends at (and eventual lovers) at Hogwarts (doesn’t have to start with 1st year, but can!). Thank you!!
Hi there! Happy you’re enjoying the recs 😊 I got a couple recs, the majority is 8th year since I don’t really read canon rewrite AUs. I hope you enjoy these!
Thermodynamic Equilibrium by DorthyAnn (T, 5k)
Harry's far too hot. Draco's always cold. And somehow against all odds, together they create a perfect equilibrium.
Good Company by Greenflares (T, 8k)
With Hermione and Ron always together, Harry's return to Hogwarts to complete his education isn't exactly fun. Somehow, it's his unlikely friendship with Malfoy that keeps him sane.
Stand Back: I'm About to Perform Archaeology by Blowfish_Diaries (E, 10k)
A new Muggle Studies professor takes the Eighth Year students to work on an archaeological excavation. In which Draco is lazy, Harry is sweaty, Hermione is drunk, and Ron turns red.
Nice Things by aideomai (M, 22k)
The first thing that happened was Theodore Nott came back from France.
Makes Me Stronger by Lomonaaeren (E, 29k)
Rita Skeeter’s Harry James Potter: An Unnatural History is a best-seller, mostly due to the fact that Skeeter’s collaborated with a photographer who’s infused the pictures in the book with Harry’s actual memories. As Harry struggles to survive the storm consuming his eighth year at Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy becomes an unexpected ally.
On Our Way by evils (E, 30k)
Draco is trying to spend the summer keeping his head down, but a repair project and a certain snowy owl have other plans for him.
Eager for the Sky by @oknowkiss (E, 35k)
It was announced, just as the Triwizard Tournament had been, at the start of term feast. A year-long, international Quidditch varsity match — the inaugural Wizarding Academy Cup. In which Harry is Hogwarts' star Seeker, Draco is on the bench, and they both have a thing or two to learn about playing for the same team.
Like Lightning at Your Fingertips by potterwatch (T, 43k)
The problem with living with another insomniac is, eventually, they find out you’re one, too. When Harry and Draco return for their eighth year, they think they’ll see very little of each other. Then McGonagall assigns them to room together. And the castle starts breaking. And there’s that thing with Potter’s magic.
The July Tree by @oknowkiss (E, 51k)
Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail… nor well-meaning friends, nor questionable communication skills, nor seven years of hating each other’s guts can keep Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from falling in love.
The Promise of Summer by Omi_Ohmy (M, 67k)
How was Harry supposed to know that coming back for eighth year would be so confusing? Everything is the same, and yet not the same. And nowhere is this more obvious than with Draco Malfoy. Harry finds himself once more watching and following Malfoy, trying to work him out. When they are drawn together to heal the castle, Harry doesn’t just find Malfoy - he also finds himself.
Azoth by @lol-zeitgeistic (E, 88k)
Now that Harry is back at Hogwarts with Hermione for eighth year, he realises that something’s missing from his life, and it either has to do with Ron, his boggart, Snape, or Malfoy. Furthermore, what, exactly, does it mean when one’s life is defined by the desire to simultaneously impress and annoy a portrait? Harry has no idea; he’s too busy trying not to be in love with Malfoy to care.
Helix by Saras_Girl (E, 93k)
Seven months after the end of the war, Harry is feeling lost. Fortunately, he is about to be offered an unexpected and sparkling chance to find himself again.
Changing Tides by carpemermaid (E, 109k)
Draco has spent half of his life spouting the things his father has taught him without much thought about how he feels about what he says. When he unexpectedly comes face to face with the Dark Lord, he grapples with the harsh realities of the world and struggles with his changing views on life.
Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop (E, 114k)
Unnerved by the attention he’s attracting from everyone – the Slytherins are the least of it, to be fair – and struggling with a raft of changes to Hogwarts itself, Harry wishes he could be happy that one constant remains: Draco Malfoy really fucking hates him.
Twist of Fate by Oakstone730 (T, 300k)
Draco asks Harry to help him beat the Imperius curse during 4th year. The lessons turn into more than either expected. A story of redemption and forgiveness.

If Severus had been a girl, her story would have been mostly the same as canon, except that the Marauders maybe wouldn't have been so harsh with their bullying because "she wasn't a threat to James' crush on Lily" and "she's just a girl, girls are fragile". However, she would have still been in love with her and James knew that, so he still despised her, thinking she was holding Lily back from him.
Now unto my personal headcanons (because they fit and they make me happy):
- Fem! Severus wouldn't have shared a room with Mulciber and Avery, so she would have befriended her female roommates instead. I believe the fanaticism for the Death Eaters cult was more prominent in boys than girls, because society expected them to stay at home and raise more purebloods than participate in battles. However, she would've still hung out with them because they shared the same interest for Dark Arts.
-Her roommates would be Dorcas Meadow, Pandora Rosier (Evan Rosier's cousin) and Theresa Flint (the last one is an oc of mine)
- She would be a tomboy for the first few years, having her hair cut short and wear the male uniform instead of the female one. Partly because she's used to wearing boy clothes and partly to avoid embarrassing pranks from the Marauders. Due to this, she's often mistaken for a boy and fits in better with her male classmates.
- She knows wizards are more respected that witches, so she strives to imitate a masculine appearance to earn that (at first). It's not a case of "I'm not like other girls". She wants to survive.
- She's been infatuated with Lily since they met, but this crush wears off as Snape sees Lily's selfishness and hypocrisy. By the time their friendship is over, Snape is already disillusioned with her but still tries to hold into their old bond out of emotional attachment rather than love.
- She faced her own prejudice and hardships in Slytherin for being a poor half-blood, with a disgraced pureblood mother. She only earned her place when she showed off her talent and bested a few of her housemates. Basically, she had to win fights, physical and magical, against her own housemates until they deemed she deserved to be in Slytherin.
-In canon, Lucius took Snape under his wing and treated him like a brother in Hogwarts. In this, it's Narcissa who sees the potential in Snape and practically adopts her, and Lucius follows her example. Thanks to the older girl, Snape experiences nice clothes and good school tools for the first time. Narcissa is quite her sugar mommyl, but Snape is also her pet project.
- She's a bit of "one of the boys", although they're not really friends until fourth year. The boys were Mulciber, Avery, Wilkes and Rosier. They accepted her because they didn't really consider her a girl and they begrudgingly respected her skills. It was a mutual understanding that they used each other for their own benefits, Snape helping them with her intellect and spells while they helped her into getting assimilated with the other Slytherins. As they grew and got to know Snape beyond her blood status, they became protective of her and started to cherish her truly as a friend (althought Rosier took it to another level)
-Which brings us to my next headcanon. In my au, Rosier and Snape had a nice connection on first year when they sat together during History of Magic. He's one of the few that was welcoming of Snape since the start and always treated her like an equal. She's very fond of him because of it, and they grow to be very close friends.
-Regulus still looked up to her when they were students. He didn't trust her at first, because of her blood status and all, but seeing she had Narcissa's favour, he decided to look past it. And after witnessing her talent, he decided he wanted to learn more about her, so he began to follow her around to know her better. Snape was annoyed initially, but she eventually appreciated his company.
-She showed some genuine kindness to Barty Crouch Jr on his first year at Hogwarts, and the boy latched unto her like an eager puppy since then. That's how he befriended Regulus, with both of them following her around so often.
-They were both her little brothers, her precious babies, who couldn't do nothing wrong even if they tried. She was patient and permissive with them in a way she definitely wasn't with her other friends.
-She's the brain of the group, so she's usually saving their asses from the consequences of their actions (Mulciber, Avery and Wilkers) and helping them with their schemes (Dorcas, Rosier and Narcissa).
-In her desire to remain in Lily's life and have the girl's love, Snape repressed herself and kept her Slytherin friends at arms' length, which caused many arguments. When she and Lily had that fallout, Snape fully embraced her identity and, in return, her housemates embraced her too, as if they had been waiting for her.
-She was a natural Occlumens, unconsciously developing her ability while she learnt to mask her feelings and thoughts, product of the abuse and harassment she went throught.
-Her boggart used to be her father, Tobias Snape, but after "the prank", it became a werewolf instead.
-After what happened in the Shrieking Sack, she inmersed herself in researchs about lycanthropy and possible cures in order to forget her fear.
-When she experimented with potions, she tried them first on small animals, mostly rats and birds. Then bigger animals, like owls and cats. And lately, in the final phase of testing, she tried them on herself. Only her friends knew about this practise, since Snape made them promise to not tell a soul, since she didn't trust the Hogwarts staff to be understanding about it.
-When something goes wrong on the final test, she heals in the privacy of her bed while her friends take care of her, lying to the teachers that she's sick. They dread this practise of hers, since they can't stand seeing her in pain, but also had mad respect for her because of it.
-She was a control freak, obsessively cleaning and arranging her stuff with systems only she understands. She always knew when someone touched her things, just by seeing them moved the slighest bit to the different position she left them. Her housemates knew better than disrupt her order.
-Her talent with potions surpassed even Slughorn himself, but he preferred to praise Lily because her looks and attitude fit more in his club. He came to regret that decision years later, but Snape knows how to keep grudges.
-She considered Mulciber, Avery, Dorcas, Pandora, Rosier, Regulus and Barty her closest friends within Slytherin. The rest were just acquaintances. She was also close to Aurora Sinistra, from Ravenclaw, and Charity Burbage, from Hufflepuff.
-She and Charity danced around the lines separating friendship from romance for a while, but Snape wasn't ready for that step and Charity moved on. They remained good friends.
-She was a raging bisexual, because obviously.
-She didn't support the Death Eaters' beliefs, but she really looked up to the figure of Lord Voldemort. A poor half-blood like her, who paved his way to the top of the hierarchy with his charms, wit and power, making all the pureblood families submit to him. He was everything she aspired to be, everything she wanted to have. However, she soon realized her vision didn't exactly match reality...
And that's all. I have more but I wrote too much already. I'm on a hyperfixation, so I'll definitely write more about her in the future.
Feel free to tell me your own ideas or headcanons. I'll love to discuss them.
Tagging @love-the-purple-cat because she's also a fem! Snape stan. She has an amazing au, so go and check her!

What if that night in Godric's hollow Lily chose to let Voldemort kill Harry and stepped aside when Voldemort asked her to?
Self-preservation kicked in! No one knows how they will react facing death. She should not be blamed for protecting herself.
Would she be honest and tell people what really happened or make up some believable story? What would happen to her after that night? Does she leave England? How would the Order/Sirius/Dumbledore react to the events? Would Severus go after Lily and tell her he is her hero? Would this be a better AU for Lily and the wizard world?
Woof.
Well.
It's not good.
Would She Be Honest and Tell People What Happened?
We don't really know much about Lily's character is the thing. I make a lot of things up for my own benefit, but that's my taking and running with the very little we see in canon.
We really don't know how she'd react.
The way I characterize her? Feeling guilty over her husband's death (who died for her and Harry) and the fact that she survived her son (who she perhaps could have protected) she'll confess to what happened. She wants people to blame and hate her so she can punish herself for this.
And judge and punish her they do as this is something the Order and the greater public just can't understand. I'm sure rumors of how and why Lily was spared also fly and soon Lily goes from the truth of simply stepping aside (and being spared because of Snape) to having slept with Voldemort to save her life to being his spy the entire time.
What Would Happen to Her After that Night?
The gossip against her is massive and I imagine the Order never quite trusts her again. They may not kick her out, though I'm sure some (certainly Sirius who is mad with grief over James's death) vote for it. Lily may leave of her own free will out of guilt and so as not to give the Order a black eye.
The Prophet may or may not run smear campaigns against her both to distract from the realities of the Ministry not managing anything against You-Know-Who and because this is such a shocking awful story.
Lily becomes persona non grata but is presumably left alone by the Death Eaters as Voldemort chose to spare her life and the order has been passed down through the ranks (and as Voldemort is alive he keeps Bella and the Lestranges and Barty in check in a way he didn't at this point in canon).
Lily lives a miserable life in which her husband and son are both dead, she's of no help to the cause, and she's trying to get on with it.
How Would the Order/Sirius/Dumbledore React?
See above but I imagine ostracization.
Sirius would never forgive Lily for James having died and Lily just selfishly allowing Harry to be killed. I imagine he'd blame her in his mind and believe that she had betrayed James personally by doing this. Not to mention what kind of a person/Gryffindor steps aside to let her baby be murdered?
The Order at large would likely have mixed opinions but the Weasleys for example would vocally condemn Lily and despise her for this.
Dumbledore would, I imagine, think much lesser of Lily and start saying things he says about Merope about how Lily just didn't love her son enough/wasn't a very strong woman. He wouldn't condemn her quite as much as Sirius or Molly but there'd be an undertone of "this happened because you are weak".
Would Severus Go After Lily and Tell Her He's Her Hero?
Severus is home free, you bet your ass he does.
Lily's probably out of the Order, James Potter his greatest enemy is dead, Sirius is out of the picture because of James's death, even the hellspawn Harry Potter is dead and out of the way.
They can now go back to exactly what they were and the Dark Lord did hold to his promise after all (and oh dear god Severus betrayed him behind his back, hope he doesn't find out about this).
I imagine Severus would try to reconnect and either:
lie about being a Death Eater entirely (probably won't work)
say he's realized the error of his ways, admit to giving the information to Dumbledore to save Lily's life, but he can't leave the Death Eaters because of the mark/he'll certainly be killed
Probably he goes with option 2 as he can't exactly pretend he never held his views or wasn't a Death Eater at all and he firmly believes that he took this huge risk, saved her life, and he's completely redeemed now.
Would This Be a Better AU for the Wizarding World and Lily?
Well.
Lily's son and husband died horribly, she's haunted by survivor's guilt forever, all her friends hate her and she's completely isolated, Snape is back on her doorstep believing she should be grateful to him for his actions and he deserves instant forgiveness, and the Dark Lord is still alive and well, has the future minister's son in his pocket, has infiltrated the government completely, and can take over any time he pleases with one out of two prophecy children dead (and Neville... probably doesn't last long after this).
So.
No.
It's better for 0 people.
It's actually much worse for everyone except Tom.
Tom is enjoying not being a wraith in Quirrel's head, thank you very much.

AO3 is down, I have a lot of Tomarry & Harrymort EPUBs, here they are. Most of them you'll have to download.
Banish Me to the Garden of Eden
Harry Potter had expected the green of the killing curse, not the red of a stunning spell. He couldn't have guessed that Voldemort would discover the truth first, and chose to trap his wayward horcrux. And in his new cage there is a very simple rule: behave and be rewarded, act out and be punished. He had been asked to die, never told to live.
In Due Thyme epub
Harry Potter has never decorated for the holidays before. Why has he started now? Better yet, why does Voldemort care—and why can't he stop? Their marriage of half a decade has worked flawlessly on the simple principle of, out of sight, out of mind. Neither of them are here by choice, after all, and the manor is large enough for them to avoid each other for months at a time without any trouble. It's safer that way for all involved. Voldemort had assumed they had an understanding on the matter.
But now, his halls are clogged with garlands and lights and Harry has wrought a subtle magic that keeps tugging on the Dark Lord's mind, pulling his attention away from more important matters—like paperwork and the running of a country without the assistance of competent minions. Celebrating the holidays is a waste of time anyway.
Now, if only Voldemort could convince the strange, uncertain yearning in his heart of the same thing.
Coriander
Five times Voldemort saves Harry from being love-potioned (or lust-bombed), intentionally or not - and one time he doesn't have to.
Entwined & Enraptured
Voldemort has won. Hogwarts and England are his, but satisfaction is fleeting when Harry Potter, who vanished during the battle, begins to appear in his dreams, fighting for survival in a frigid wasteland. As Voldemort grows close to Harry, murderous intent gives way to lustful desire and when he succeeds in bringing Harry back from the Drift, their lives are irrevocably changed forever.
Primeval EPUB
A vicious snarl thundered in the air, one that made the hairs in Harry’s arms stand on end, and then— Screams. Harry thought he knew terror, had known it from the moment he’d faced off Voldemort in his first year at Hogwarts. Now he knew better. Something wrenched in his stomach, petrified and noxious at the same time he saw Voldemort move and turn. Voldemort was— Harry gagged. AKA Voldemort's ritual goes horrifically wrong.
hostage EPUB
Love at First Sight EPUB
Voldemort rises from the cauldron with two dicks and some extra powers. Harry's mesmerized.
Murmuration (EPUB)
Exhausted and anemic from Umbridge's Blood Quill, Harry decides to relieve stress by writing Voldemort a parody of a letter, intimating that Harry wouldn't mind if Voldemort murdered Umbridge (not that he'd ever send it, of course). In a series of events culminating in Voldemort receiving that letter, Harry discovers what it means to request the aid of a possessive Dark Lord.
Kisses Cursed EPUB
Fairytale AU. Loosely inspired by Beauty and the Beast. Some said he was once a man, cursed, and some that he sold his soul to demons and became one in turn. Others said that such evil as he could never have been human. That he was instead a nightmare, left lingering upon the earth a very long time ago. Harry just knew it wasn't safe to walk near the Riddle House after dark.
another day to find you
When Lord Voldemort last closed his eyes, his greatest enemy had bested him and he had felt the final vestiges of his ruptured soul sinking into his greatest fear. He opened his eyes again only to be met with a reality far too inconceivable to be true: Harry Potter cooking his breakfast in an apron.
splits your skin from end to end, down the center of the earth
Snape has just killed Dumbledore before Harry’s eyes, and he will not rest until he makes the man pay. But Snape isn’t the only Death Eater wanting to gain favor with the Dark Lord. No, there are ambitions far worse than even Snape’s, Harry learns. Ambitions that deliver him directly into Voldemort’s hands.
“I was so very nearly tricked, you see, but Lord Voldemort is not so easily fooled. No, I shall not kill you Harry, not yet. I think I should like to keep you instead.”
Freefall
A voice whispers to Harry in the still of the night, when he is on the verge of sleep and at his most vulnerable. A retelling of Deathly Hallows. Rated M for Harry/Voldemort slash.
Like My Very Own Blood
Minister Riddle won his election in part because he took the extremely charitable path of adopting a war orphan—Harry Potter, the child of a historically Light family—and raising the boy as his own. It was an investment worth making… or it had been, until his quiet, clever son grew into a brilliant, scheming Omega determined to seduce his adoptive father by any means necessary.
Or: Harry out-Slytherins the ultimate Slytherin, and Tom’s absentee parenting comes back to bite him on the ass.
(Or make him bite Harry on the ass. Or. Whatever. It’s all very bad-wrong and you should probably avoid this story unless you are morally bankrupt. Like me.)
Two Words In Green Ink (last 2 chaps ie Godric's Hollow are missing)
Eleven year old Harry didn't know how he knew--he didn't even know what it was he knew--but as he stood in Olivander's shop with Hagrid, he vowed that he would never tell a soul about the two words written on his wrist. Avada Kedavra. --- a story of souls told in three parts.
Mine
After the incident at the Department of Mysteries, Lord Voldemort discovers what Harry Potter is. He reaches out to his human horcrux through dreams, and the course of the Second Wizarding War is forever altered.
A dark fairy tale.
Harry Potter and the Seven Soup Bowls
Harry stumbles upon a house that belongs to a man named Voldemort. Inside the house he finds soup. And a bed. And maybe true love.
There’s A Potter On Me
Potter is attached to Voldemort in the most literal sense and the brat won't let go. Voldemort is... very confused. (Okay, maybe more homicidal than confused but that only lasts the first few hours.)
Monster Fucker
During their nightly gossiping session, Ginny poses a question about how snake-like Voldemort might be. They fantasize a bit, then go to bed and assume that that was it.
A week later and Harry just has to know.
With Every Guitar String Scar On My Hand
Severus rose and looked at him in anticipation and the Dark Lord's eyes remained fixed on him, "My Omega-"
Sorry, what? What? Severus just hallucinated. My Omega?
"-he hasn't presented yet but he went into a drop and from what I am inferring he was under a lot of undue stress," The Dark Lord informed him in detail, "I will let the healers take you to him but I must warn you until he breathes so do you and your godson, the minute anything happens to him I promise that I will kill you both."
Severus noticed how stiff Lucius became at the man's words. He then quickly made his way into the room to see Cissa and every other healer in the Dark Lord's service present, crowding around the bed. As he moved in the direction of the bed, the healers moved away and Severus felt the air leave his lungs. Fuck. Harry Potter was the Dark Lord's Omega. The realisation hit him like a truck and the need to apparate away from this grew stronger.
Or Harry disappears. Severus is summoned, threatened and horrified in that order. Narcissa is holding her sanity by a thread. Tom is smitten.
Nightshade
In his mind, in his heart, in his soul — Harry.
Female Harry Potter
Precious Horcrux - of course I have it, that is my dream fic, of course I downloaded it, and I managed to get full 10 chap pdf in between AO3 crashing, and then sent a full pdf to @youknowmevj
"Precious Horcrux..."
The two possessive, cloying words, hissed low, made Harrie feel nauseous.
"I'm not going to kill you. I'm going to keep you."
Let me know if you can't open a link of the epub/pdf bcs I had to unrestrict manually each one so I might have missed some. Happy reading! 🫡❤️

Hazbin Hotel Hogwarts!AU
Tags: Hazbin hotel, Harry potter, The marauders, possible angst, Human AU maybe?? TW opinions. Not proof read.
(may contain unpopular ships)
CONTAINS SPOILERS
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
AN: The marauders and Hazbin Hotel are two of my biggest hyper fixations rn. Writing this really knocked me out of my writers block.
feel free to debate about it!
Reminder: I sorted the characters based on the values of each house (it is completely okay to disagree!)
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Hogwarts House Values
Gryffindor - Courage, Daring, Nerve, Chivalry.
Hufflepuff - Hardwork, Patience, Loyalty, Honesty.
Ravenclaw - Intelligence, knowledge, wit, observation.
Slytherin - Ambition, Cunning, Cleverness, Resourceful.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Hotel inhabitants:
Charlie
Slytherin
Reasoning: Charlie has proven time and time again throughout the series that she is ambitious when achieving her goals. She is always resourceful especially when figuring out how to help others (EX: recruiting the cannibals from cannibal town).
Sixth year. (17)
Has been dating Vaggie since Second year.
Constantly lending out her notes and homework for those who need it.
Everyone in Hogwarts knows her by name because of how well respected and adored she is.
Consistently defends the younger years (first and second years) from the older students.
Attends every single one of vaggie’s Quidditch games.
Vaggie
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: Vaggie is viciously loyal to her girlfriend (Charlie) and always puts her needs in front of her own. Vaggie is also Hardworking when trying aiding Charlie in her crusade.
Sixth Year (16)
Has been dating Charlie since Second year.
Never seen without Charlie.
Has a rough history with Lute, especially because of Second year.
Quidditch Beater
Hufflepuff Quidditch captain.
Alastor
Professor (Previously Slytherin)
Reasoning: I struggled to place alastor between Ravenclaw and Slytherin. However i leaned more towards Slytherin as he is cunning and resourceful enough to manipulate the main cast into making deals with him.
He gives Professor snape vibes idc.
Loves to learn the student gossip so he can later tell Professor Rosie.
Definitely Teaches Defense aginst the Dark Arts
A complete potions master, knows almost every single potion by memory.
Teaches the male students how to be true gentlemen.
Angel dust
Slytherin
Reasoning: Resourceful. He survived Valentino. come on.
Fifth year. (16)
Never seen anywhere without husk.
In this AU him and valentino are Ex’s.
Best friends with Cherri Bomb. He tries to keep a respectful reputation to get her out of trouble when he can.
Has started to Crush on Husk but after what happened with valentino he needs to learn to trust agian.
Husk
Ravenclaw
Reasoning: Has incredible observation skills. He also knows when to keep his mouth shut.
Fifth Year. (16)
After Angel told him about Val he never left Angels side.
Enjoys Cherri but can sometimes find her annoying
Would die to protect Nifty.
Sir Pentious
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: Loyalty. He literally died for the main cast.
Sixth Year (17)
Has a huge crush on cherri bomb but is convinced she doesn’t think he exists.
Enjoys talking to Vox about muggle technology.
Constantly experimenting with magic.
He views Nifty as a younger sister. However he knows damn well Nifty can handle herself.
Nifty
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: Hard worker at the hotel, she keeps on top of making everything clean. She’s also exceptionally patient.
Third year (14)
Complete clean freak. especially within the Hufflepuff dorms.
Constantly getting caught sneaking around after hours.
Chaser (yes. it is terrifying.)
Lucifer
Headmaster (Previously Gryffindor)
Reasoning: He fought for change in heaven, even after falling he showed bravery when taking on his position as the king of hell.
Honestly just wants what’s best for his students.
Constantly talking through problems with his students to aid in anywhere he can.
Close with Rosie so he can get all the gossip.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Hell inhabitants
Vox
Ravenclaw
Reasoning: It’s vox.
Sixth year (17)
Vox has a fascination with muggle technology.
Alastor used to be his favourite teacher now he’s constantly skipping or ignoring his lessons.
Dating Valentino but is constantly worried Valentino is still in love with Angel.
Finds Angel annoying and whiny.
Valentino
Slytherin
Reasoning: Cunning, Ambitious. This man knows how to get what he wants.
Sixth year (17)
Dating Vox, However he’s only doing it to get back at Angel.
Huge ego.
Excels in potions class (love potions duh.)
Velvet
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: Loyal to Vox and Valentino. She’s hardworking on project she’s passionate about.
Fifth year (16)
Views Vox and valentino as her older brothers.
Vox and Valentino adopted her into their friendship during her first year.
Used to be incredibly close with Angel dust, they would both bitch and gossip. It hurt her a lot when Val and Angel broke up.
Envy’s the friendship between Cherri and Angel.
is actually friends with vaggie.
Carmilla
Professor (Previously Ravenclaw)
Reasoning: In the series she runs her own weapons company. i think that is self explanatory.
The youngest of all the other professors.
Teaches N.E.W.T and O.W.L preparation.
Deeply cares for all her students like a mother however she would never admit it.
Could never have children of her own so she turned to teaching.
Has a soft spot for velvet (i’m a firm believer that velvet is her daughter in the actual series)
Cherri
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: She is insanely loyal to Angel. She’s also always brutally honest with anyone and everyone.
Fifth year (16)
Best friends with Angel, consequently she became really close with husk as well.
Constantly pulling pranks.
Really wants Sir Pentious Help with her pranks but thinks he dislikes her.
Paints her nails in class.
Always gets detention from Zestial. She hates him.
Zestial
Professor (Previously Slytherin)
Reasoning: Zestial was hard to place between Ravenclaw and slytherin but in the few scenes we’ve seen with him i think he embodies cleverness and ambition. (he must be good if Alastor respects him)
Teaches English language (i do NOT care he convinced Lucifer that these young witches and wizards needed a basic education)
Strict yet somehow is one of the favourite teachers (just below rosie)
Incredibly skilled wizard yet the students have never seen him use his wand.
Rosie
Professor (Previously Ravenclaw)
Reasoning: Rosie has proved throughout the series that she is intelligent and has a keen sense of observation. i felt like Ravenclaw really fit her.
Matchmakes students constantly. every seating plan is meticulously arranged.
Will listen to any students problems and aid in the best way she can.
Teaches Herbology and the study of mythical creatures.
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Heaven Inhabitants
Adam
Gryffindor
Reasoning: His ego is way too big to be placed in any other house. (also he ‘sticks it to the man’)
Views Emily as a younger sister.
Best friends with Lute.
Will always defend Lutes actions no matter how drastic.
Gryffindor Quidditch Captain.
Lute
Slytherin
Reasoning: I struggled between Slytherin and Hufflepuff for Lute because of her loyalty. However i feel slytherin fits her perfectly. she’s ambitious, clever and resourceful.
Best friends with Adam.
Used to be best friends with Vaggie up until second year, now she hates her.
Quidditch Beater
Sera
Ravenclaw
Reasoning: Does this one need explaining??
Seventh Year (18)
Top of her classes.
Has a promising career within the future of the ministry.
Sera is very protective of Emily and does not approve of her friendship with Vaggie and Charlie.
Prefect.
Mature for her age, she grew up raising Emily.
Emily
Hufflepuff
Reasoning: Emily is patient and hardworking. She’s especially loyal with her friends and to sera.
In this AU i imagine Emily as a younger sister to Sera.
Emily is only in Second year and is already held to an incredibly high standard because of her sister.
Social butterfly, everyone knows her because of her sister.
Close friends with Charlie and Vaggie, However she also hangs out with lute a lot.
Views Adam as an older brother.
Childish, immature for her age. she didn’t have to grow up.

Mirror of Erised AU
What if the Mirror of Erised didn’t arrive at Hogwarts in Harry’s first year? What if it arrived during Harry’s fourth year?
Warnings: unedited
Word count: 2.5k
Tumblr media
Cedric Diggory was the first person to come across the mirror after its subtle arrival to the castle in the middle of the night. He was on his rounds. Ever the dutiful prefect, he opened every door, moving around his wand with the tip alight, casting strange shadows everywhere he went.
When he reached the mirror’s room, he glanced around it, confused that there was a whole room dedicated to a mirror alone when the closet next door had been overflowing. It must’ve been a very important artifact.
But then why hadn’t the professors told the prefects of its presence?
Curious, he stepped up to the mirror, reading the words engraved on the top. Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi.
“Odd,” he said aloud, his eyes falling to his reflection.
His appearance looked the same as it had in every other mirror. Nothing was out of the ordinary, nothing at–
Wait.
The reflection shifted. At one moment, it’d shown the school robes he was wearing, the next, it depicted him in dress robes.
And coming up behind him in a lovely, white dress was Cho Chang.
His reflection turned to grin at her, and her answering smile looked just as it did in real life. She placed her hand on his shoulder, and it looked so realistic that Cedric was surprised when he didn’t feel the weight of her hand there.
Then he noticed the ring.
“Oh,” he breathed. He stepped back from the mirror, and the image disappeared. “What in Merlin’s name?”
He looked back at the inscription, deciding that he already knew what it meant. This must’ve been a mirror that showed the future. Stepping forward again, he gazed at Cho Chang’s ring and dress, losing his breath a little at the dazzling smile on her face.
Cedric stood there longer than he should’ve, but he allowed himself just an extra minute before backing away and leaving. He closed the door softly behind him, leaving the mirror behind. He didn’t need it anymore.
The image was gently impressed upon his mind like a kiss.
During the rest of his rounds, a blissful smile was never far from his face, even when he had to track down a fourth-year who’d somehow gotten out of their dormitory.
For if that was Cedric’s future, what a beautiful life he would lead.
-
The door to the nearly empty room opened, and Professor Severus Snape slipped inside. The headmaster had asked him to check on the mirror during his night on duty, to be sure that it’d survived transport.
From the doorway, he could tell that the mirror was intact, so his job was done. He could turn right around and report that all was well. In fact, Dumbledore would be expecting him soon.
Instead of leaving, he closed the door, edging closer.
He knew what—or more accurately, who—would be lingering in the reflection, so his motivation was hardly curiosity. His hands trembled at the idea of seeing her, but he knew he couldn’t resist. He finally stopped in front of the mirror, gazing at the reflection, willing it to change.
And when the red-haired woman stepped out of the background, his heart leapt high and then shattered on the ground with the sheer power her face held over him.
“Lily,” he breathed, his hand lifting of its own accord, reaching out for her. But his fingers didn’t meet with the soft skin of her face; they met with the cold surface of the enchanted reflection.
Lily’s mouth started moving, and Snape wished more than anything that he could hear her words, to hear her voice again after fourteen years. Alas, all he could do was gaze at her, and the brilliant joy living in her expression as she smiled at him made his fists curl up.
It was torture; having her in front of him like nothing ever happened, and yet knowing what had happened. Almost as torturous as having to daily see the corruption of Lily’s beautiful green eyes corrupted by James Potter’s features in their dastardly son.
But this reflection was all Lily, and it was perfection.
He knew he needed to wrench himself away.
He knew that this wasn’t real.
He knew this mirror had driven people mad.
But he couldn’t move, frozen by the sight of his heart’s greatest desire.
So there he remained, until the early rays of the sun started to poke over the mountains outside the window, and when he tore himself away, it was only after he promised the reflection he would come back.
-
Harry Potter slid into the room, looking for a place to hide away from the crowds of people sporting “Potter Stinks” badges, hoping for just one moment of reprieve from everyone’s opinions and expectations. He closed the door and slumped against it, puffing out his mouth with his exhale.
This blasted tournament was more trouble than it was worth. He couldn’t even make it to the Great Hall for breakfast without being confronted with it all.
He dropped his bag, running a hand over his face.
Ron still wasn’t speaking to him, and Hermione split her time with the two of them, trying to nudge them closer to reconciliation. She was wasting her time. Ron wanted nothing to do with him.
He shook his head, the familiar swirls of helplessness and frustration weighing down his insides far heavier than all the toast he likely would’ve eaten for breakfast.
He got up to leave when he caught sight of the mirror.
However off-putting the inscription in the frame was, the mirror seemed to be a normal mirror. But this was Hogwarts. If the room’s sole purpose was to contain the mirror, this mirror was special somehow.
Curious, he walked up to it, standing directly in front of it. He’d have expected something to jump out of the mirror or for the mirror to start talking, but nothing of the sort happened.
How anticlimactic.
Then, Harry squinted before pushing up the hair that covered his forehead.
He wasn’t imagining it.
His scar was gone.
He quickly lifted his hand, his fingers traced the slightly raised skin. His reflection also lifted its hand and touched his seemingly smooth forehead. He rotated his face this way and that, trying to see if it was some sort of optical illusion. But his reflection didn’t ripple or change, it simply moved with him.
Every time Harry ever looked in a mirror throughout the course of his life, that scar always looked back at him. It was eerie to not see it now. He didn’t look quite like himself without it.
And yet…
Perhaps this was a magical mirror that didn’t show the effects of curses. Or perhaps this mirror showed how life should’ve passed, as if Voldemort had never irrevocably altered Harry’s life.
Harry’s chest started aching, and he backed away from the mirror, shaking his head.
There was no point in wishing life was different, because life was what it was.
Picking up his bag, Harry left the room without once looking back.

“Trevor?” Neville called softly, pushing the door open and stepping into the room. If he would’ve stood at his full height, Neville might’ve been almost six foot, but it wasn’t only when he was looking for his pet toad that he rounded his shoulders and hunched his neck. “Trevor?”
Neville didn’t see the mirror at first, his gaze set on the floor where a toad might hide. When his sweep of the floor didn’t reveal any brown spots, Neville realized the room was quite empty.
His curious eyes settled on the mirror, running across the grand rectangular frame. Neville didn’t harbor any fondness for mirrors as they could only ever reveal disappointment, but there was something about this one. It didn’t shine or move like some pieces of enchanted furniture tended to do at Hogwarts, and yet there was a quality of otherness that drew him closer.
Neville inched forward, catching sight of himself.
His reflection didn’t hold anything more rewarding than it normally did, and he nearly winced at his big front teeth, his floppy hair, and his middle section that only ever seemed to grow bigger.
But then, suddenly, behind him stood his parents.
Not his parents as he knew them, with wide eyes and deathly gaunt faces, but a lot more the way they appeared in the pictures his grandmother had framed all over the house. Except…they had a few more wrinkles. And his mother had grown out her hair. And his father had a beard.
“Mom?” Neville croaked. “Dad?”
For nearly a year before Neville came to Hogwarts, he refused to go with his grandmother to go see his parents in St. Mungo’s. What was the point, he nearly yelled at his grandmother, when they don’t even know us?
But when he uttered those titles, their reflections smiled with enough life glimmering in their faces that he could never remember seeing: they recognized him.
Such a desire rose up in Neville’s chest to tell them everything. He wanted to admit to his parents that he hated potions and was likely to fail. He wanted to confide in them about how no one seemed to like him at this school, not the professors, not the students, not the ghosts, and not even the portraits. He wanted to tell them he was proud of them for being Aurors and standing up to You-Know-Who.
But what came out was: “How did you guys do it?” Neville tentatively sat in front of the mirror. “How were you both so brave? I’m scared of girls, I’m scared of professors, I’m even scared of Grandmother. How will I amount to anything if I’m scared of everything?” He watched their wise faces, waiting for his parents to speak to him, aching to hear their voices.
They didn’t speak, they simply watched Neville, smiling with pride and love.
His grandmother often said she greatly missed her son and daughter-in-law. Neville wished he could say he missed them too, but how can you miss someone you’ve never known?
The sight of his healthy parents started to hurt, and Neville looked away. “I have to find Trevor,” he said to the floor, wiping at his eyes before getting to his feet. He stopped by the door, glancing over his shoulder at the mirror, but the image of his parents was gone. Even so, Neville uttered a quiet farewell and left.

Draco barged into the room, slamming the door shut. His pained gasps echoed through the room as he sank to the floor. A professor had just Transfigured him into a ferret. In front of all his peers.
His cheeks burned as the pangs of pain died down.
He could still picture the glib satisfaction on Potter’s face as Draco’d been thrown up into the air like some sort of sick entertainment. How dare he. And how dare Mad-Eye Moody. Draco’s father would be furious when he heard, and the idea of Mr. Malfoy’s rage fortified him.
Draco got to his feet, strolling over to the mirror to check his hair. He smoothed his hands over the mussed parts. The sooner he could collect himself, the sooner he could go to Professor Snape and complain about what Mad-Eye Moody had done. Then the professor would be sorry.
The mirror was so filthy, Draco had to stoop to find a good angle to check his appearance. He humphed. Of course this rundown, pathetic excuse for a castle would devote a whole room to a mirror that looked like this.
Draco was about to turn away when the spotty reflection next to him shifted.
Was that…Granger?
Draco backed away immediately, sure that the know-it-all had found some way to spy on him in his humiliation. The form he loathed disappeared as soon as he stepped away.
Odd. If she were somehow watching him through the mirror, her image shouldn’t have left just because he moved. Unless she’d noticed his attention and was now hiding.
Draco stepped forward, an insult ready in his mouth for when her reflection would return after she’d thought he left.
But the buck-teeth and bushy hair reappeared immediately as he came closer. He was about to let the insult fly when he noticed the brown eyes weren’t narrowed in derision. Instead, they were open and almost…glowing. Yes, it was Granger, and she looked…happy. Her head was turned towards his reflection, but he could still see the soft smile toying with her lips.
Draco inhaled sharply and stumbled backwards, the image once again disappearing. “Must be a Zonko’s prank mirror,” he muttered. “Cheap trick to play on someone.” He lifted his nose into the air and turned his back on the mirror.
But even as he closed the door behind him, the image followed him farther than the confines of the room.

Twin redheads bounded into the room, shutting the door as silently and swiftly as they could. “Filch won’t know what hit him!” George whispered gleefully as they listened to the grumblings of the caretaker grow softer and softer.
“Or more importantly who,” Fred reminded. “That is not a mess I want to clean up.” Both boys turned around to look at the room. “What do you suppose that is?” Fred asked, staring at the mirror. “It’s never been here before.”
“Dunno.”
They looked over at each other, smiles growing on their faces. They darted forward, planting themselves in front of the mirror, eagerly waiting for something to happen.
Nothing did.
Fred whipped out his wand. “Revelio.” The twins waited for a message to appear or a trick switch to light up. “Maybe we have to read the inscription?” Fred asked.
“Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi,” George rattled off. Still nothing happened. George stepped forward, running his fingers along the frame in the hopes that his fingers would catch on a lever or imperfection leading to a clue.
“Wait, it’s a mirror. What happens if we reverse the inscription?” Fred pointed at the message. “I show not your face but your heart’s desire.” Both twins looked in the mirror again, their eyes meeting in the reflection, waiting with bated breath for something to happen.
“It should’ve done something by now,” George whispered, as if the mirror might eavesdrop and react to his words.
“Aww, it’s just a regular mirror,” Fred said, looking severely disappointed.
“Too bad,” George answered. “Oh well, Filch’ll be gone by now.”
The twins left the room without so much as a second glance, their mind already occupied with dreams of mayhem and mischief.
