ESCAPING INTO A SHIP

So what exactly made me latch onto the Sydcarmy ship like a leech on a water buffalo?

It was unexpected (for me)! Yes, the very first meeting between Syd and Carm did make an impact. I thought "Oooh, what's this?!" However, Carmy was/is such a mess that I quickly dismissed it. And Sydney just seemed to want his professional approval and a partner in making something great after the soul-crushing failure of Sheridan. So, the first season I personally didn't feel a mutual sexual/romantic tension, more like an automatic respect and shared goals/passions. Sydney nor Carm were obviously trying to flirt. Most slow burns on TV are 100% obvious like a Jeanine and Gregory (Abbott Elementary), Nick and Jess (New Girl), Jake and Amy (Brooklyn 99), Jim and Pam (The Office)...Until Braciole Ep. 8 that is.

S. 1 Episode 8- I won't get into everything but Carmy was desolate. Yes, he became a psycho chef and two people quit in Ep.7. However, he mourned Sydney more than Marcus. She was in his flashback/nightmare (?), then the way he told Tina that she looked like Syd (the poor pup), him texting her before opening the note from Mikey, and finally the most gorgeous locked gaze scene since Pride and Prejudice (2005). The soft lighting, the music, the colors, the mind-reading...magical. I still didn't get it initially. Silly, blind me.

Mentorship where??? Season 2 Carm and Syd's "mentorship" dynamic is pretty much over. They are true partners and spending more time together. They're dressing alike even when not in uniform, finishing each other's sentences or talking in unison. Sydney is opening up more of herself and Carm is asking to know more. They use the ASL sign for sorry with each other and no one else until ep 10. Then there's that locker scene in ep. 1 or 2, when they almost hang out just cause. However, Carmy misses the moment and there's the return of the kicked pup face. Before being on the ship I was delighted with all of their scenes and was looking forward to the food tour. They just ROCK together on screen.

Classic Love Triangle- Who's Claire? She's "Claire Bear", the prototypical "cool girl", who is willing to chase an socially awkward, wrong-number-giving man, despite being a pretty ER resident with no shortage of options. Did a CW writer get hired? Anyways, why was her presence used almost exclusively to put strain on Carmy and Sydney's relationship instead of The Bear generally? We could have had scenes with Nat, Richie, and Marcus arguing with Carmy about him being distracted due to Claire. They saved 99% of that for Sydney. They CHOSE to insert her in between or just after scenes with him and Claire. Showing Sydney's tattoos and her getting dressed with the stained chef's coat juxtaposed with them was WILD.

I LOVE that both believe their interpersonal problems are solely about The Bear/business partnership. In most "slowburns" the characters are far more conscious and actively work to keep things platonic. Jeremy might be a smidge aware that Sydney means more to him after the panic attack, but I bet he's shoved it down. All he knows afterward is that being with Claire feels wrong hence ignoring her call and recommitting to SYDNEY. He could of said "You all/This/The Bear deserve my full focus etc..." He was also nagged into greeting Claire at Friends and Family, seemed anxious when Fak brought her up right before The Table scene, and also while explaining that "she's great" to Sydney. He was at peace when focused on Sydney in the moment below.

The actors: Jeremy and Ayo's real life friendship is warms my soul and their chemistry onscreen is amazing. DON'T WASTE IT!!!

Jeremy smolders on screen. I want to see Carmy continue to stare, yearn, fall, then eventually confess and for Sydney to reciprocate his feelings. Anyhoo, does anyone else melt when Carm means business?! They do this twice in season one and it's not good for me. Whew, I need to clean my whole house or run a few miles.

Finally, there's so many other parallels between these two. They are fearful avoidants, have a missing or dead parent, jacked up stomachs, use sarcasm, but are generally very earnest, they struggle with anxiety, are compassionate, are perfectionists, peace-makers, give people multiple chances, are workaholics...so much more. A lot of that is also ME, lol.

Sydcarmy is my Roman Empire. I love them as much as you can fictional characters and they deserve the most tender, angsty, triumphant, romantic best-friends to more love story.

Yes, absolutely. As always you are so right it hurts. I love how your mind works.

And of course Cross would react like a puppy getting treats, he like physically perks up everytime it happens. It stays in his mind, he replays Nightmare's words in his head, the pats on the back feel like they stay even after (that's also cause he's so touch starved).

I imagine that scene from I believe brooklyn 99 (I only know that scene from clips btw so I'm probably gonna get things wrong) where Peralta? I think? Calls captain Holt(?) dad. And like the ppl around him react and stuff. I'll see if I can find it.

Can you IMAGINE Cross calling Nm dad??? On accident ?? He'd be so fucking embarrassed, cause he's supposed to be so closed off and serious, he's supposed to be a royal guard, and Nightmare's his boss. He must feel like he's letting himself go, like he's loosing control.

Maybe that funny accident actually turns into angst, where Cross starts to avoid Nm, to try and distance himself, to not get too comfortable or indulge in that stuff, also partly because of he doesn't feel like he deserves it.

Nightmare might take Cross pulling away as him not liking the extra affection, so he stops for Cross' sake. Cross takes that as Nightmare being upset/disappointed in him.

Either it ends in miscommunication with Cross feeling like he deserves it anyway, or it ends with Cross having to explain how he feels and express his needs, which is a mortifying ordeal to him, to ask for what he wants.

5. Do you respond to comments?

I do try and answer everyone, even if I just say thanks. I will delete really rude comments, which have fortunately been rare.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I wrote "Because I could not stop for Death" for Mercy Street and killed basically every character at least once, making remaining characters miserable. Except for the last chapter, where I killed the guy we all loathed.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

This is tough because I mostly write happy endings. I think "But let thy silk twist down" counts as one, because Jed Foster is convinced that Mary is dying or has rejected him and then she surprises him by showing up and locking them into the sitting room. And in GLOW, "everything could yield him pleasure" allows Sam and Ruth to get back together over Christmas.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not very often. It's mostly been in big fandoms (Reylo, Shadow and Bone, I'm looking at you) but it hasn't been a big issue on AO3 or Tumblr. And I'm comfortable deleting and blocking.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, when I feel it's called for. I write grown-up sex scenes, so there are no wacky positions (unless someone talks about how they're going to throw out their back) and sometimes a breastfeeding mother's milk lets down or a woman struggles to have an orgasm. It's pretty vanilla though and all cishet. In the cock v. dick debate, I lean cock. I don't use other euphemisms for male genitals unless someone is quoting a poem. (I'm not sure that has happened but it totally could with me.)

No one in any of my sex scenes has had any bodyscaping and a not insignificant number of times, someone has left their socks on.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

OMG, YES. I love a crossover. Probably my Mercy Street/Sesame Street crossover has to be up there for zaniness. I did put Shadow and Bone characters in AOGG Prince Edward Island and I have also crossed over All Creatures Great and Small vets (James and Tristan) into the Grishaverse.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I'm aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I've been asked for permission but I don't think I gave it.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes. During the pandemic, there was the Mercy Street Murder Hotel round robin with @tortoisesshells @fericita-s @broadwaybaggins @sagiow @mercurygray and also the Cruise Ship with @sagiow and @fericita-s.

(Pro tip: it's easier if you agree on your murderer BEFORE you start writing but it was fun writing clues that were 50/50 going to be red herrings.)

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Given the number of fics I've written for them, I have to say Mary Phinney/Jed Foster but it really could be smart-woman-who-is-underestimated/quippy-guy-who-gets-he's-smart-but-not-as-smart-as-she-is-and-that's-the-turn-on

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

This may make people sad, but I have a hard time seeing my way clear to an ending on "what is it to be a thin crescent moon" largely because I'd have to do some more plotting to get where I'd want to go. It's never say never but the truth is, I originally intended to stop when they got to the Little Palace, so everything after that was basically improv.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I'm pretty good at capturing a character's voice and I've often been told my work is poetic, which I appreciate, as I am a poet.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Long-form plotting. I love to read it, but I get tired trying to create it and often resort to lily-padding (my own term for jumping from scene to scene.) I overuse the word just. I don't play chess well but I cannot resist writing about gambits.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I try to keep it minimal, since I'm only fluent in English.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Mercy Street.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

What is this, Sophie's Freaking Choice? I really like my GLOW zombie road-trip story "Music shall untune the sky" because I gave them a good ride and there was so much angst! "Hope is the thing with feathers" is a fic I wrote for myself, when I was despairing about Real Life and US politics and human rights, where I let Christopher Foyle offer the comfort I desperately wished for.

Okay, so I dedicated my first smut in English to Chaggie:

Charlie Morningstar, the Princess of Hell, is very much a pillow princess. Luckily, Vaggie loves being her service top. However, what happens if Charlie decides to shift their dynamic in bed and tie her tough-looking girlfriend up for her own good?

As the title and summary above suggests, this fanfic is about Charlie help Vaggie relearn the way of trust through bondage. Yes, they have kinky s3x in this, but they also talk about the problem of seeming imbalances in their relationship (in bed and beyond). I believe that they are both switches actually, and I want Charlie to validate Vaggie as an equal partner.

Some trigger warnings other than the consensual kinks: I headcanon that Vaggie suffered from bullying in the angelic army and has mental health issues stemmed from her past traumatic events. There is a graphic scene portraying the physical attack and non-consensual restraints that she endured during an incident in the exorcist days, and another scene of her mental breakdown after the hotel opening.

Now ik you've seen the PL ending where So Mi get's sent to the moon but im unsure if you've also seen the other route u can take in the dlc so just a warning this MAY potentially be spoilers for when you side with Reed:

The little picture taped to the corner of So Mi's computer is actually a picture of her and her mom (or at least 99% sure its her mom) from before she ever got 'recruited' by the NUS, put into polaroid form courtesy of this awesome little mod right here! It's actually one of a few photos you can see on the wall of her apartment during some flashback scenes in the "Somewhat Damaged" mission. Had the thought that she could've possibly kept a few photos from back then as mementos after she was whisked away from her home in Brooklyn

As for any Devan backstory, whether solely abt them or them and another character, I unfortunately don't have any sorta condensed post focused around that :')

It's still something that i'm figuring out myself but im starting to get a better idea abt it all! Maybe someday soon i'll write up something for it, but for now any and all background on Devan you can potentially find will be in the "oc: Devan" tag! I've kinda been using those 'tag the oc' posts as a way of sharing little nuggets abt Devan for the time being :) so certainly look forward to more of those

7. How do you choose which POV to write from?

I'm going to forecast a bit of the future here, because my longfic is written from a close third person POV. But I think the most important thing to me is the goal of the scene. For instance, if there is a council meeting in which multiple POV characters are present, I'd decide like this: If I need the reader to understand the in-depth politics of a situation, I'd give the POV to an experienced ruler. But if I need to hide something from the reader (with some foreshadowing of future issues), I might give the perspective to someone who is less politically savvy.

13. what’s a common writing tip that you almost always follow?

Write what you want to read, at least for longfics. For one-shots, I can manage writing something that I wouldn't personally read, but for longfics (at least the current one), the thing that is currently helping me maintain my interest is that "I want to read this when it's done" feeling.

25. What fic do you wish you got more of a response on?

Honestly, I feel like I've been extremely fortunate on fic response. I really thought that maybe one or two people would be interested in my longfic, so I'm very pleased with everyone's kind comments. I think the closest I get to wanting more response is on certain chapters. But then, there will always be chapters that are harder to comment on then others, so I try not to sweat it.

34. Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

Hopefully, still writing? But I have a habit of hobby-cycling as a person with ADHD, so even if it's just one year of my life, I'm trying to soak it in and enjoy it now.

42. What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?

A chapter of Brittle Stars by fullofleaves (@hellofeanor ) and yes! It's been fascinating to explore Adar's backstory from someone else's headcanons. It's quite a bit different from mine (not that anyone but me would know since my Adar Will Not Talk about it), but that's the wonderful thing about fandom. Also, this fic gave me Pengolodh as a blorbo and now I'm basically that Brooklyn 99 gif about him:

57. Do you prefer editing as you write, or waiting until it’s finished? 

I edit as I write. ADHD brain does not like moving past something until it's polished. Sometimes, I can get away with a [transition here] during a writing sprint, but otherwise, you bet I'm sitting there searching for the perfect simile for that ancient look on Adar's face. Unfortunately, this results in many scenes that are "mostly polished" that don't get included in the final fic. There's about 80k words in the writing graveyard of this fic.

The office and Brooklyn 99 similarities

Both the office and b99 are one of the best sitcoms made in american history , with a pack of great comic timing, perfectly written jokes and incredible direction. I appreciate them both very well and intend no hate for anyone whatsoever . After watching both of them I felt some similarities between both these shows , which could be due to the michael schur connection.

Both the shows follow a basic heartfelt comic approach sitcoms, with a cute couple , the sarcastic main character, weirdo side characters, and obsessive yes man / best friend with a spectrum of weirdness, and ofc the COLD OPENS, here are some more specific similarities:

1. As I mentioned, the characters charles boyle (b99) and dwight schrute (the office) are both

- obsessed yes man of the main character (jake and michael resp)

- very particular and loyal towards family name ancestry and the weird traditions that follow

- wear neutral colours half sleeved shirts

- very hardworking

2. Kevin from office and Scully ( or hitchcock) from b99 can eat anything in this whole damn world , dumb and occasionally very smart

3. Gina and Stanley are both in the job only for the money and hate being a part of it

the office s7e6 costume contest , everybody tried to get Stanley's attention

b99 s2e22 the chopper , everybody tries to get Gina's attention

Gina also has the mean girl , Hollywood queen tone just like kelly

4. s2e3 b99 : Jimmy jab games

s2e3 the office : office olympics

I mean..

5. "That's what she said" & "Title of your sex tape"

both jim and michael are immature , take nothing seriously, have a traumatic childhood but loveable in the end

6. Both jim-pam and amy-jake's 'technically' first dates take place on roofs , with a very similar camera shot

7. s7e15 the office : everyone searches for Michael putting them in his shoes , and he is eventually found , Again , on a roof , then a kiss scene

s4e18 b99 : everyone searches for amy putting them in her shoes , and she is eventually found , Again , on a roof , then a kiss scene

8. s2e9 the office : Michael crashes Jim's party which he wasn't invited to

s2e12 b99 : Jake invites holt to a party , nobody wants him in to be

9. Whenever the boss leaves the office the secretary (pam or gina) follows him out

10. In the office jim invites everyone to his party including the tech guy who they thought to be a terrorist but michael , similarly in b99 , holt involves the random copier guy in the unique high fives to punish jake

I understand that there are common tropes used in comedy all over the world , but this is more , I was copying half of my texts and changing the character names which explain most of it, they basically used the entire theme of the office and created it into a cop drama

The only difference is , that the 99 is more of a woke show with light quirky comedy, and the office is much darker and saracastic , following the footsteps of the original uk version, but yet manages to be heartfelt, what do you think

Have you ever watched Brooklyn 99? The main couple Amy and Jake are the main couple and very much like Eddie. I was just watching the scene where Amy is trying to convince Jake they should have a baby. And it's funny because her argument is like "you know how you want to go to the water park, and I won't ever go with you, guess who will always go with you?". His eyes just lit up like Bucks do and basically.......

Now I need a damn scene of Chris being to grown up for something he used to love to do with Buck. Like, I need a lot this backhalf, but I need Eddie pouring Buck a shot patting him on the back. Just consoling him, offering to go to the museum with him and pretend to be as interested in the "Immersed Van Goh" experience. Buck is just pouting like it's "not the same Eddie!!!""

Hi Nonnie! Yes, I have watched it. :) I haven’t finished Brooklyn 99, but I watched most of the seasons. I really like the show and I laughed a lot watching it, I’m not entirely sure why I never got around to finishing it. I know I will at some point, there’s just so much stuff out there to watch / catch up on! You’re very right about Amy and Jake, of course, yet another couple that was obviously always going to happen and be endgame. They are very much like Buddie.

And awwww, that would be so cute! After all, we already know Eddie feels this trepidation about Chris growing up, and more than once when Eddie has felt something as Christopher’s dad, we canonically learned that so did Buck. Give us this plot line, 911! I know it probably won’t, since Buck is busy with the sperm donor storyline, but we can dream, right? Eddie humoring Buck to make him happy would be such prime soft husband moment. And by the end of the visit to the museum, you just know they’d end up back at Diaz home, and that Buck, with his gigantic measures, would just curl up like a little kitten into his Eddie and find comfort in just being allowed to, having no idea just what a massive case of heart eyes Eddie was suffering from at that very moment...

😅 What’s a story or scene you’ve created that you’re a smidge embarrassed exists?

Oh gosh, there are a couple of different directions I could take this one, but what comes to mind is the Amy/Rosa Brooklyn 99 fic I wrote like 7 years ago, before I had fully interrogated the insidious nature of copaganda, and B99's place in that. The fic was for a holiday gift exchange and no shade at all to the person who requested it; I have no idea what their relationship is to those concepts now. Any blame should go to me; nobody held a gun to my head and forced me to write the thing. In a vacuum, the ship stuff was cute but nothing exists in a vacuum and the police do so much damage, both systemically and personally, every single day.

⌛ How long does it take you to write a fic, or a chapter?

It really depends! If I'm cranking along and the inspiration and energy levels are doing well, I can manage about 1500 words a day. I get the impression that might be kind of slow? If a concept really gets under my skin, though, I'm capable of writing it every single day, so I can make some progress that way. I think the fastest I ever finished a fic was Mistake on the Part of Nature, which I wrote and posted unbeta'd in one afternoon. (And yes, I am well-acquainted with the irony that the fastest thing I've ever written is also my single most popular fic, lol.) The longest a story has ever taken was six years (Impatient to Be Free) but that's because I started, stopped for many years, and then picked it up again.
