I am so glad that the first short we get is about Millie, and her sister Sal, especially since she will be getting more character development in next episodes.

Really smart move, considering she was lacking any solo character development and was seen just as the perfect wife who has it all figured out. The fact that she lost contact with her family and left her sister to deal with everything is such a relatable problem. As the family members grow older they leave and it isn't just hard on the parents, but even more so on the siblings who always had eachother.

Is it possible for Danny to have a female clone as a male?

Short answer: Kinda. There are multiple options.

I'm not an expert by no means, but I'll try to simplify cloning for you. Also, reproductive cloning of humans is more of theoretical field than anything.

Let's start of with this: Dani probably isn't exactly a clone. A cloned embryo is essentially an identical twin of the original organism. She isn't that, because she isn't the same sex. Even if clones are genetically identical with one another, they will not be identical in physical or behavioral characteristics, because DNA is not the only determinant of these characteristics. That's why she is shorter, not as thin, behaves differently etc. Dani was made by reproductive cloning - the process of cloning an entire organism.

So, how to make Dani out of Danny?

To create a female clone from a man you could take his cells and turn off the Androgen receptor genes. The person will develop as female with XY chromosomes and will have Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. This method creates genotypically male individual but phenotypically female, making them intersex. This would make a clone, but it wouldn't be "genetically" female.

Deleting the Y chromosome. This will create a female child with Turner's Syndrome. Most of the effects of which can be countered with hormone supplements at appropriate development stages.

Duplicate the male X chromosome - turning an XY into an XX. Though the resulting individual wouldn't be a perfect clone because the proportions of source DNA wouldn't be right, all the source material would come from the original male.

Bring in donor chromosomes from an unrelated female. All other genes will be identical to the "parent's" genome, and by controlling which X is active (only single X is active in a female). The 'clone' wouldn't be as identical as the other methods.

So yeah, either Danny is trans or Dani is intersex :D

Hazbin Hotel redesign ideas p. 2

I am a bit of fashion, especially men's, history nerd, and I'm also a bit of radio nerd, so here I go, biblically accurate Alastor.

ALASTOR:

Alastor was a radio host (a radio star?) who lived and died in Louisiana. He was shot during a hunting accident, in the head, somewhere in the 1933, during radio's golden era. He cares greatly about his image and always smiles to show no weaknesses. He hates modern technology and doesn't allow his face to be captured by video recording or non black and white camera. His is mixed-race Creole.

Nothing about Alastor design make sense and it pisses me off. Not only it doesn't fit the time, it also doesn't fit his character! Besides, he is too red. He disappears into the background, especially walls of the Hotel.

Alastor cares about his image greatly, yet his clothes are torn. He is supposed to be like Hannibal, yet he looks like an edgelord wannabe. It's awful. I learned nothing about him from his design, other than "he's and old-time radio deer guy", and that's really bad.

Fashion in 30s was inspired by Hollywood, and sport and movies celebrities.

Back and white fashion in this period wasn't that different, at least for men, as long as you weren't poor, but here are some photos of specifically black fashion in 30s. In general I recommend that website if you want to look more into the fashion of this period.

His hair is completely wrong. And it's also really ugly lol. For richer black men a shiny straightening hairstyle was the go to since 1920s. One such style was "the conk" where one would chemically straighten their hair. It left hair shiny, but the process was painful and expensive. It literally could burn your scalp.

Another popular style was the brush wave. It's creating narrow waves rolling on top of head with the sides cut short and smooth. This hairstyle is still present to this day, but nowadays it's done on the whole head.

Other than that, men just wore their hair naturally, but short.

There is no focus on trousers or vest in Alastor's outfit. (Which is wild considering zipper fly was introduced in the early 30s, but was got popular by the mid ’30s). This was time of experimenting a bit with vests. If you wanted to look fancy and/or formal, you would wear a vest. Pants were wide legged, had a high waist and a single pressed line down the center of the leg. Some trouser waistbands were unique in the 1930s, for example a Hollywood waistband trouser. It had an extra wide band with a double row of buttons. They fit very high, overlapping the ribs. they often had netal ring tabs on the sides to tighten the pant to the correct fit without the need for belts or suspenders.

Also, monocle? Really? …Really? Here you go, read this if you're curious. Lots of pictures of glasses included. Glasses stayed essentially the same in 30s as they were in 20s. They were "round with a center bridge in the early years and an upper bridge in the later years. Frames could be tortoiseshell, black plastic, or thin metal." 

Moving on from fashion, because I could never shut up, microphones!

The most probabale one that everyone who is redesigning Al is drawing is a good old classic Carbon mic. It looks like a ring with a metal star and the microphone inside. It can be hand held or a staff.

But, if you wanna draw something different!

Other than Carbon mic there is also a Ribbon microphone (first row) and Moving Coil mic (second row). Unfortunately, they killed Alastor in the best part of the radio golden age, so the mics are still a bit ugly, not gonna lie.

How would I design him:

First things firsts, either he is mixed or he is white, because right now it just feels like a cheep excuse to have an "evil voodoo" character without getting too much backlash. Let's be honest, nobody thought he was a POC and that white face doesn't help. Again, just like I mentioned with Vel, when you're drawing a character with human like skin tone you have to be careful and think how it ties to their race.

Second - fashion. His outfit and hairstyle is a disaster. He has always tried to 'dress to impress', so obviously I would give him well maintained clothing and that 'high quality', formal style. I would give him the dark brown Hollywood trouser with buttons and dark crimson shirt, like dried blood almost. Under a coat or jacket he would have a brow vest, both the same colour as the pants. Highlights would be golden and green or purple. I for one would love to see him start out with a jacket/coat which he stops wearing inside the hotel after he bonds with the people inside it more, but he would still wear it outside and in the finale would put it on again, after his breakdown in the tower. This would show he began to trust the hotel residents a bit before he 'realises his mistake' after the battle. I would give him short haircut, because not even white people wore hair like that. (What in the Karen-core is it supposed to be?). Say goodbye to that monocle. Why is it even there there? Because he is old-timely? What is he, a children's cartoon villain? His design doesn't need more soulless clutter. Give me something that tells me about him as a character. I've seen people give him old radio as teeth or chest and I love it! When it's not too detailed, it's a great idea to make Alastor less like a living human but also less of… just a deer. He just looks like a deer demon. I would keep his shoes, hands and antlers, and give him ears that would fit the hairstyle I would go with.

[Edit: I forgot to mention, I would give him a time accurate hat or a free wavy lock of hair to cover the mark on his forehead where he was shot]

Thirdly, the microphone! My love. I remember the microphone used to be able to talk, but now it doesn't, unless I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure. Now it's just a weird look staff microphone with an eye and that's about it. But imagine something like a moving coil with the metal sign on top of it were the letters on it change. It could be a way it's communicating, in a simple way. This was it could still have a unique shape. That would have been fun to see. I can certainly imagine it being something of an 'unfiltered voice' of Alastor, where it would change it's writing into "Shut up", "Die" or something like that and he would hit it in a reprimanding way to reverse it to "Smile!". I'm just saying, that's a cool idea.

Well, this took forever to make, I actually forgot about this, so it just sat in my drafts. Anyway, if you want to see brilliant use of costumes and detailed, accurate depiction of fashion (especially black and queer) through history in New Orleans I recommend "Interview With The Vampire" (2022). It's also a great show.

Paper-Man was an enemy of Wonder Woman. His real name is Horace Throstle.

He was a meek and clumsy janitor at a chemical company, for which he was bullied by his coworkers. The visiting Diana Prince was the only one who was nice to him. Before she had even left the factory, he accidentally fell into a vat of chemicals. He became paper thin, and still bullied, escaped.

He decided to turn to crime to get Diana gifts, but Diana would not accept a stolen gifts, which angered him. In the end, while escaping in a shape of a kite, he accidentally landed in the newspaper company and was cut up by the printing press. 

He's a silly little dude with pretty tragic backstory. I love him.

…He is a bit of a creep tho, isn't he? He became obsessed with Diana because she was nice to him and had problem with her rejection 😐

Oh, no, TikTok's algorithm isn't almost design to be creepy misinformating thing, it is designed to be like that.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute did the first academic investigation into censorship on TikTok and found it uses its algorithm to suppress certain content. The study found that videos with hashtags about the mass detention of Uyghurs, Hong Kong protests, LGBTQI and anti-Russian government where being suppressed.

TikTok also had to apologised for suppressing posts with the hashtags "Black Lives Matter" and "George Floyd". What did they blame? A glitch.

BTW up to 1.4m children under 13 use app. That means a lot of children who are easily tricked.

TikTok mostly rely on how long you watch a video, even down to milliseconds of rewatching. Then it adds your typical stuff: what you watch, share, like, comment and follow, but also your username.

Once TikTok knows what you're interested in, it is very hard to break that cycle. And if that content was conspiracy theories or extreme fitness influencers or radical political critics or sad, depressing videos? Well, it's not TikTok problem.

There was a backlash about this when people noticed depressed teenager would literally get even self harm videos and people with eating disorders would get content encouraging the disorder within matters of few minutes. After it, the videos are now filtered a bit better, but TikTok is still designed to keep you in a closed circle of the same content, so this still happens, just less extreme.

In March 2020, TikTok policy documents were leaked showing moderators were instructed to suppress posts by creators considered "ugly, poor, or disabled" described as "chubby or obese" with "ugly facial looks like too many wrinkles or facial deformities and other disabilities". "If the character's appearance or the shooting environment is not good, the video will be much less attractive to be recommended to new users,".

TikTok responded at the time saying most of those guidelines were no longer in use.

That being said, black, trans and disabled creators say that they noticeable get less pushed by algorithm, but most notably their videos get banned, taken down, and deleted for no reason.

So yeah, TikTok sucks. Don't beat yourself up if your not doing good on TikTok, it's just an asshole of a platform.

I was talking to my sister the other day about a Polish queer movie called "Hiacynt" (Hyacinth) which is called "Operation Hyacinth" in most non-Slavic countries, since their citizens are less likely to understand that's what the title is referring to.

When I showed my sister the trailer she went:

Her: Oh, so it's a gay movie?

Me: Yes. Why did you think it was called Hyacinth?

Her: What?

Me: You know, like the operation Hyacinth. That time the government created the "pink files" on gay men and transgender people to blackmail them and isolate from society. That literally happened only 34 years ago and the files exist to this day in police's archives.

And she just didn't know about this… because it never effected her… because straight people just don't bother with learning queer history.

Me: *watching "Barbie"*

Me: WoW, I feel like it completely missed the point and doesn't really understand matriarchy and feminism. Besides, the movie itself as a story wasn't that great, not bad, but still. Not to mention that Mattel is very hypocritical and has always tried to avoid being label as feministic. On top of that, the "CGI is bad, we are doing this the old way" marking makes make my blood boil ("CGI" has existed for a long time, even before the effects were computer generated, if you think it's a new thing to paint most of the scenery or add a crowd than you know nothing about cinema), especially when you notice the deleted blue screens in BTS videos.

Some random women on the internet: I related to the X character, this move was so meaningful to me, it opened up the room for an important conversation in my home and in society.

Me: You know what? I'm glad you enjoyed it and felt seen thanks to it. Who am I to rain on your parade?

Stolas' Lament VS Just Look My Way

I wasn't really a fan of this song when I first heard the beginning, so I only watched both the original and the official version now, and, oh boy, do I have some thoughts.

The song was first released as a fan single by PARANOiD DJ. Two years later (2023) an officia music video was released, on Vivzie's account, with an updated instrumental and lyrics.

I've highlighted the differentces in lyrics. On left is the original version on right is the official.

This song is actually really great when it comes to it's meaning and development of Stolas. But, OMG, what is with those changes???

The official version just makes Stolas into a selfish asshole! While also try to make him look better at the same time. In both versions he is lamenting the fact that Blitzø doesn't care about him, for some reason Blitz doesn't want to say he doesn't accept that Stolas actually loves him despite their status and agreement. The difference is that in the OG version Stolas actually reflects on what he'd done and how he hurt others. He knows it's his fault, but he doesn't knows how to fix it. It's not about him being sad because he is hurt, like in the official ver, but because he hurt and destroyed everything and everyone around him. In the changed version he makes everything about him.

The change that convinced me to make this post is change of "What's left for me in this broken house, If I cannot have you?" to "What's left for me and my broken heart, If I cannot have you?". I'm sorry, but this is one of those moments that make me go "Ah yes, fandom knows the characters better than the author". It's completely downplays just how much this relationship means to Stolas. I've seen a lot of criticism saying how the agreement between Blitzø and Stolas didn't really posed any threat to Stolas, because of how privileged he is, and I'm sorry, but that's such bullshit. Stolas risk everything for this relationship, despite that he gets the worst part of the stick. And he did loose it all, if Blitzø leaves him, it was all for nothing. He is a royalty! You have to be incredibly naive to think he can just do anything he wants and pay no consequences. Stolas is a tragic character of his own demise. He brought his own downfall on himself. Him choosing to cheat with Blitzø was bound to destroy his marriage, his status, his relationship with his daughter and interfere with his duty.

It just really shows where the show is heading with Stolas. Instead of actually make him a redeemable, tragic character by making him relatable in his struggles to escape his inescapable duty and, well, not being allowed to be a person (remember, he wasn't even allowed to not only show, but also feel strong emotions, even as a child on his birthday), they make him tragic, because "poor owl boy didn't get what he wants and is heartbroken :("

(If you see this as overreaction to a simple change to song's lyrics, that's because I'm not mad about this song in particular, but how the characters turned to more shallow versions of themselves in this show.)
