That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.

Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."

The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.

And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?

This was my favorite picture by far from Komuricon. When I saw Captain America marching down the stairs while boldly holding his pride flag as it billowed from the force of his conviction, I had no choice but to make a mad dash from across the room to ask him if I could take his picture. It was such a powerful image for me. While we were enjoying the Con, the US Senate was working on taking the first step towards providing staturory protections for gay marriage. What better symbol of that moment than this Captain America?

However, after the events of this weekend, this image inspires me even more now. Where I felt triumph, I now feel heartbreak. While I am at a loss for words in this tragedy, I find myself returning to this image for comfort. (I recently reedited this image. I had originally muted the colors to reflect how I was feeling about the recent Colorado Springs shooting. However, I now realize I need to have a bit of hope to hold on to, so I returned the image to how it first impacted me.)

I am so grateful that this Captain America was willing to work with me in recreating his original walk down the stairs. I appreciate his patience and willingness to get the shot despite a multitude of distractions.

I guess, another thing I really like and don't really see much of is how the Avengers are perceived by the public/their relationship with the media🤔

Take the Welcome Back, Cap exhibition at the Smithsonian. Loved the idea, but it raises so many questions, I can't help but wish there was more. Was he ever consulted, did he say something at the inauguration? How did he feel about it?

Also, if he agreed to film those silly videos for high school kids, I feel like doing a big serious interview wouldn't be so far off the realm of possibility.

(That, and I just like to imagine Steve giving his first interview to Colbert and then Stephen boasting about it every time Steve is mentioned in the news. It probably even becomes a bit where he just ends up sighing )

And then what about the fall of Shield, Steve disappearing after the Accords!! We never see it, but I wonder how Steve becoming a fugitive would influence Cap's public opinion.

God imagine all the slander. Rhodey rolling his eyes at the TV, Vision not understanding why they're telling such obvious lies. Tony just leaving the room.

I like to think that the public opinion wouldn't turn on Steve so easily, but who knows.

TK’s departure was a solemn affair.

Gwyneth was waiting for him at the train station, packed lunch in hand; she’d kissed her son’s cheek and pressed the paper bag into his hands, fussing over his folded shirt collar and the strands of hair that kept escaping his infantry cap.

Carlos stood a few feet away, hesitating, wanting to move closer but unsure if he should do so. It was so much easier when they were sitting on that roof, when want and desire and whispered vows came as easily as breathing. But here, on the ground, surrounded by the bustle of a train station, with TK’s mother patting his cheek and packing and repacking his bag, that rooftop felt as distant as a dream.

But then TK was standing in front of him, a small, sad smile ticking at the corners of his lips. Carlos didn’t need any urging to fold himself into TK’s embrace, and it was the hardest thing he’d ever done to not bury his face into TK’s shoulder and breathe in every part of him.

“I’ll write,” he murmured into TK’s shoulder, and tried to ignore the way TK’s breath hitched around him. Almost like he was holding in a sob.

TK pulled back, sooner than Carlos wanted, but they had already been hugging for too long and Carlos could feel the suspicious gazes of passerby as they finally pulled apart. TK’s jaw worked, like he was trying to find the words, but after a moment he just clapped a hand onto Carlos’ shoulder and tried to smile.

“I’ll be back before you know it,” he said, but the cheer in his voice was strained.

“I’ll write,” Carlos said again, or thought he did. The blood was rushing in his ears, so loudly he couldn’t hear his own voice.

TK’s hand was lingering on Carlos’ shoulder, the tips of his fingers brushing against the nape of his neck, feather-light like a breath of air.

Then the train whistle was blowing, shrill and piercing, and Gwyneth was calling for TK to hurry before he missed his train, and TK was gone, jogging to the train and clambering aboard seconds before it began to pull away from the station.

Carlos wasn’t sure if TK could even see him in the mix of people seeing their soldiers off. But he waved until the train disappeared around the bend anyway.
