Exploring the isles: The three kingdoms of the isles
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While in the isles series we visit a number of places across the isles, it is rarely explained in depth the three main kingdoms that form the isles: Metaloc, the lotus forest, and the aerlands.
Tumblr media
The Aerlands
Pronounced Ay-er-lands, the aerlands is the first kingdom we visit in the isles series, taking up the western third of the isles. Notable locations include Coral Cove, the village of Murder, and Selenia valley.
While The Aerlands is the largest kingdom of the isles, it has the least power with no specific capital. The Aerlands is known to be a kingdom of tradesmen; Fishers, Miners, Farmers etc. Because of this the architecture in the Aerlands is relatively simple but study, adopting architecture not dissimilar to medieval Britain.
Tumblr media
Metaloc
Metaloc is the next kingdom we see in the series, home to locations such as the Disappearing Islands, Draig caves, and the capital which happens to also be called Metaloc.
This kingdom has possibly the highest political influence in the isles with a royal family that is said to be placed there by the god roments himself. Metaloc's capital is known to be an intellectual powerhouse, home to a prestigious guild of inventors and various academic institutions.
Compared to the rest of the isles, Metaloc has more of a steampunk influence, known for towering buildings made from stone with copper and glass being other frequently used building materials.
Tumblr media
Lotus forest
The lotus forest stands out from the other two kingdoms in the isles as not only does it have a unique terrain, value system, and royal family, but time is also known to pass differently in the lotus forest, passing about seven times faster than the rest of the isles. Proportionately, the fae and elves that call the forest home have also got an extended lifespan.
The lotus forest is known to be the kingdom with the highest concentration of magical abilities with there rarely being a resident that does not posses some kind of supernatural ability. It is also unique in the fact that they have had the same queen for the entire kingdoms existence, who herself is a demigod and the daughter of the goddess Nadia.
Since the lotus forest is, well, a forest, all of the architecture is built into the abnormally large oaktrees that make up the forest, with highly detailed carvings to represent the buildings purpose.

“Come one, come all, and try your hand at the YA quote quiz of the decade. It is time for you to ask yourself: How many of these YA book opening lines can you identify? A good opening line gets a reader to sit down and pay attention. An excellent opening line hooks you and reels you into shore. With books, first impressions can be everything. The book cover, paratextual material, and opening lines are just a few important first impressions books use to sell their stories. This quiz tests the mettle of your favorite YA books by seeing what opening lines you can still remember.“

"cursed bunny 🐰" inspired by a story in Bora Chung's book of the same title
°°°
I don't think I'll be able to look at bunnies the same way: the "Cursed Bunny" story will forever haunt me.
°
~ excerpt from the "Cursed Bunny" story
°
Grandfather used to say, “When we make our cursed fetishes, it’s important that they’re pretty.”
°
And the lamp, shaped like a bunny rabbit sitting beneath a tree, is truly pretty. The tree part looks a bit fake, but the bunny was clearly made with love and care. The tips of the bunny's ears and tail are black, as are its eyes and the body a snowy white...
°
Every object has a story. This object is no exception...
~
One of the best collection of short stories I've read. First time reading a collection of scary stories (not your typical horror stories 😉) and it didn't disappoint. The stories are all very unique and haunting that it'll probably stay in my memory for a long time. They're not easily forgettable and interchangeable. So so good, I know the stories well enough yet they're still worth a reread 😌.

Writing Tips - What Kind Of Writer Are You?
Not all writing tips work for everyone, you need to learn to give things a try and accept when they aren’t helpful. Ask yourself these questions to see what writing practices might work best for you - and be sure to experiment if you want a better understanding!
1. Does your word count motivate or discourage you?
If seeing your word count motivates you, stick it everywhere! I like to constantly check word counters, add up my chapter word counts, section word counts and total word count, calculate what my word count will be by the time I’m done with my current writing session, etc
But if the word count is intimidating and discouraging to you, like it is to many people, measure your productivity by time spent on your project rather than the word count; dedicate a certain amount of time to the project every day/week/whatever works for you, try writing sprint videos on YouTube, anything that doesn’t mention your word count. It can always be edited later on
2. How much/often can you write before it’s a chore?
It’s well-known that the vast majority of people can’t consistently keep up with NaNoWriMo’s 1667 words per day practice, so how far can you push the metrics before it gets overwhelming? I personally find that writing daily isn’t something I can do without it feeling like I’m forcing myself to do a task rather than engaging in a fun project, but I can commit easy enough to meeting a weekly goal. At the moment I’m on 1000 words per week, but you can also change how many words are needed, you just need to be able to consistently meet said goal without feeling overwhelmed by it, even if it feels too small
3. Where do you fall on the plotter scale?
A true pantser has no plan for their story and goes in head-first with a confidence I envy - a good amount of writers aren’t that. Chances are you’re a plotter of some variety, but how much so? It’s always worth testing the waters with how much or how little you can work with as a set plan. Personally, I like to plot five chapters in advance and then write them before plotting the next five - it gives me the freedom to see where my writing deviates from my anticipated plan and adapt it from there, which has been critical to many big changes in the story

Exploring the isles: The pantheon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is established early on in the isles series that there is a pantheon of nine gods that reside over the isles. Today on exploring the isles we will be deep diving into said gods, what they represent, and where in the isles they are worshipped, and their demigod children.
Tumblr media
The first: Alera, the celestial goddess
Alera is known to be the first of the gods, and the goddess of the sun, moon, stars and seers. In the words of the prologue of chronicles of the isles 'she was the creator of the sun, moon, stars and anything that their light touched. She had the ability to give mortals the gift of sight, true sight of the future and into the minds of the people.'
Alera is most notably worshipped in Selenia valley, which is also home to her demi-god daughter, Evangelie the daughter of the moon. Who was known as a member of the guild of the divine.
Tumblr media
Mother of the Isles: Nadia, goddess of life
Nadia is one of Alera's divine children, known to have created all life on the isles that Alera created, in the words of chronicles 'Nadia was the mother of all; she filled the world with life and even gave some whom she deemed worthy the gift of giving life, creating what we know today to be dead risers'
Nadia is worshipped all over the isles but most particularly in the lotus forest, reigned over her daughter, Katerina the pure, another member of the divine guild.
Tumblr media
Father of the sea: Xymor god of the oceans
The prologue of chronicles of the isles states 'Xymor brought the seas, and Nadia gave her brother life in the seas in thanks for the water that keeps her creations alive.' However in the isles Xymor is seen as equally important as Nadia because the isles would not be isles without the oceans.
Xymor is worshipped mostly by pirates and in some parts of the aerlands, but most particularly in the lost city of pyrelia. However unlike other members of the pantheon, Xymor's demigod child, Lucinda the scholar, was not born in the isles.
Tumblr media
Twin gods: Tiras and Kyara
While Tiras and Kyara are twin gods, they could not be more opposite, representing love and war respectively. Kyara is worshipped by both people across the isles as well as pirates as she also presides over the tides and strategy.
Tiras' child is Aleksander the goldenhearted, yet not much is known about him, with his cousin Damien the protector being reveared across the isles and seen as a saint.
Tumblr media
Selianna, goddess of magic and justice
Selianna is both the most respected and the most feared god aside from Paylos. Being the goddess of magic, justice and witches she is the most worshipped.
While she only had one daughter in the traditional sense, Veronica the sorceress, Selianna has also been known to bestow magic upon any child before they are born, having children in a non traditional sense that make up the coven of selianna.
Tumblr media
Hillaya, goddess fire and fury
Not much is known about the goddess Hillaya other than the fact that she is the goddess of fire, dragons and bravery. However there is evidence that she may have been known as another name in the past.
Her legend lived on through her son, Xandar the fury, although not much is known about him either.
Tumblr media
Roments, god of power and creator of kings
Roments is known to be one of the divine sons of Zymor, it is the belief in the isles that anyone in power such as a queen or a captain of a ship is in that position under the will of Roments.
Roments actually has two possible demigod children, either Gene the Valiant or Belladonna the wise. It is unknown which of the two is the actual prodigal child.
Tumblr media
Paylos: the cursed god
There is not one person in the isles who does not know of Paylos, the cursed god known to only destroy in the wake of his family's creations.
Paylos has no demigod children, the only creation he has known for is the creatures known as shadowlings, of which the origins are unknown.

“Falling in love with a vampire, werewolf, witch, or other paranormal creature is a time-honored tradition of paranormal romance. What if you fell in love with an urban legend? Would you cower in fear, or would you get even closer? If you are in the latter group, this is the quiz for you.
The literary tradition of falling for an otherworldly person is everywhere. The animal bride and groom tradition shows a longstanding pattern of mystical or magical creatures who end up with human partners. Animal shifter romances are also entrenched in the western literary canon with poems like Marie De France’s Yonec (where a lady falls for a Hawk-Knight) and Bisclavret (where a lady falls out of love when she realizes her Knight husband is a werewolf and the king takes him on as his werewolf-Knight). Something is incredibly appealing about an otherworldly person who chooses to trust you with their secret, power, or secret powers. I, for one, cannot see it stopping any time soon. If it does, I will have to read the backlist of my favorite sub-genre as I patiently wait for paranormal romance to become popular again.
I’ve selected a mix of backlist and frontlist paranormal romance books that cover a range of love interests from vampires, to werewolves, to witches and so much more. I am a fan of all of the paranormal romance books that are getting published once more. All I have to say is, bring it on. The paranormal romance novel you should read next awaits after a short quiz that targets your preferred vibe.“
