This is the cut content contest!
My turn!
So I love playing video games. But I also find the unused stuff fascinating. I love learning about how the game was developed, how it could have ended up. I don't think there is a single video game in existance that doesn't have something that was scrapped or changed during developement. So this is a poll for that stuff!
Feel free to submit multiple things, even multiple things from the same game.
allowed stuff:
models and sprites
sounds and music
entire maps
characters and enemies
objects and items
dialog
unused animations for existing characters
HUD elements
a few lines of code (as long as you can tell me what they do or would’ve done)
debug and test stuff
stuff that remains in the game’s files but goes unused
weird stuff left out of bounds
stuff that can be seen in trailers or gameplay demos but was removed
concept art
anything that was scrapped during development
not allowed stuff:
Things from movies, comics, etc. This is a video game only bracket.
W. D. Gaster and everything related to him. He is the in-universe representation of cut content, and this poll’s mascot, but does not count.
Easter eggs. If your thing was purposely put there for people to find, even if it can’t be found through normal gameplay, it's an easter egg and does not count.
Scripulous Fingore. They are fan-made, not actual cut content, so they can't be included. :(
automatically included:
Elh - Luigi’s Mansion
Tramplin’ Stu - Super Mario Sunshine
those cats - Korean version of Super Paper Mario
dragonhead flower - Super Mario Galaxy
^^^ I will be pitting those guys against each other so they don't take something else out early.
Submit here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfx3nPqO3cuV56XFD6QvTqOHhO-3jAXaoZzJDkSIX-Caunlgg/viewform
gosh i hope this works, this is the first time ive made a google form

Before the next round of Polls gets started in the Fictional Cat Showdown @best-fictional-cat , some Juan the Small Magical Latino Cat Propaganda.
Tumblr media
1. He’s Small
2. He’s Magical
3. He’s Latino
While personally I think that should be enough, he’s going against a cat from Welcome to Nightvale, and I know that fandom shows up so…
Tumblr media
Juan is a wizard in training who specializes in potions. In Monster Camp, this is used to shake up the game each round because he’s also the camp bartender. His potions can do everything from hide your stats so you’re going in blind, change the music and art style, and unlock strange and unique plotlines.
Tumblr media
While he isn’t given a character sprite in the original Monster Prom, he can often be found at outdoor parties. He’ll challenge how fun you are, convince a crowd that your moves will be the next big dance craze, and you’ll reminisce about all the wacky hijinks you got up to in middle school.
Tumblr media
Please… give him this… He’s so cute and he has to have 3 adjectives and his species in his title because there’s so many other Juan’s in his school. Let him know he is special and just another Juan.
UPDATE: Here’s the link to the poll.
UPDATE 2: Well, we put up a good fight. Juan the small magical Latino cat is the best cat in our hearts 💜

Intro/pinned post
Hello, everyone. Sarah here. This is a blog nominally for writing, but realistically for shitposting with smatterings of fandom.
Sarah - she/her - 30 - Scotland
Tumblr media
Likes:
Fantasy, and within that, romance, slice-of-life and adventure. My WIPs range from sword-and-sorcery to magical realism and gothic horror. Somehow all of these WIPs include friends-to-lovers. Weird.
Historical fiction. I'm a consumer of period drama, a researcher of historical costuming, and European history is one of my special interests.
Queer stories and characters, especially the kind I would have liked to have seen growing up <3
Critical Role, as well as an ever-shifting collection of fandoms, arranged like a detailed hierarchy of plushies in a pre-teen's bedroom. I'm sarahlizzie on AO3.
Mature content, some of which I post on my blog. If you're a minor, please consider your follow carefully.
Tag games/ask games! Or just infodump about your WIPs and OCs in my asks! I love you!
My WIPs:
The Adventures of Sitora Lux - This is an expanded and editorialized retelling of a former D&D character who I felt like didn't get a fair enough shout in the game. Sitora is a big lesbian Paladin-to-be who is still figuring stuff out as she attends an academy for training up future peacekeepers of the realm. A high fantasy coming-of-age/romance with some mystery and drama thrown in, spread over 5 books. Currently editing book 1, currently writing book 2. Have a character intro for Sitora! feat: lovely art from @rosieartsie.
I also use the tag 'Sitoraverse' for posting about the expanded world of Mithlonde
Tumblr media
Grey-Sky Lark - my distraction project. Based on the mind-worm of 'Hebridean Vampire', I started writing a deeply introspective, totally first-person series of vignettes/short stories about my (unnamed) vampire protagonist as fate takes him on the winds and currents of history and the North Atlantic. The story starts in 9th century Faroe Islands as they are being colonized by the Norse and goes through to modern day. At the moment I'm working on the late-Victorian/Edwardian section where he is tasked with tracking down another vampire.
Tumblr media
Chrissie's of London - a psychedelic, high-drama adventure set in a magical version of 1920s London, starring a gregarious and irresponsible hotel owner, Silas Chrissie [character intro], his long-suffering accountant, Loretta Cramps [character intro], and his old friend, a French, shape-shifting felon called Jacques [character intro]. It's gay too because that's my brand, and it has portals to another world, monsters coming out of said portals, hotel rooftop fights, all that fun stuff. It's giving some Neil Gaiman, some Rivers of London, some Stranger Things.
Tumblr media
Brazen Sparrow - an age-of-sail romance, featuring a sapphic navy captain/pirate enemies-to-lovers storyline. Expect maps for this one!
Til Death Do Us Part - my NaNoWriMo 2023 project. A whodunnit set in 1937 featuring the groom being killed at his wedding.
Dawn Meeting - the first in a series of interactive stories over at tell-me-a-poll-story, my second blog.
If any of these sound good to you, sign up for my taglist!

hey guess what
i, hayden of tumblr dot com, have decided to make a third bracket blog for funnies
we're pitting songs by british alt-rock/indie/whatever you want to call them band bastille against each other! how fun!
now it's your job to submit some songs to put in there! they have a fairly large discography, so that's why i'm not putting all of them on there haha that's too much work
some rules:
normal poll rules??? no spamming etc
to give you an idea, what i'd like is original songs or covers/remixes that bastille have done of other artists. any remixes of their songs by other people aren't allowed. (for example, the greek tragedy bastille remix is allowed, but the pompeii audien remix is not)
however, covers they've done of their own songs (eg. the bunker sessions/one eye'd jacks sessions) are fine
other people's heartache is allowed also! from any part from 1-4 (bear in mind i haven't been able to listen to 1 or 2 yet)
also!!! collaborations are great! go ahead!
speaking of pompeii, pompeii and happier are blacklisted until further notice because i know they're going to sweep
submissions are here and probably open until may 1st :)
inspo: @blue-character-brawl @obscure-song-tournament @album-cover-battle @divorced-tournament @fictional-train-fight @themecompetition and @fictional-dan-showdown!

She could hear her heart pounding. A loud bum bum bum resounding through her body. The ache in her legs matched its rhythm, screaming Slow down! Stop!
But she couldn’t.
They were coming. She might not have been able to see them or hear them. But they were near.
Keep going. Keep going, she chanted to herself, hoping boosting herself up would help her run faster.
As long as she ran, they couldn’t catch her. That was their sick, twisted game.
Run as fast as you can. And don’t stop. We’ll  be  right behind you.
Her and her team had taken off running–two of whom had looked for an escape. They had stopped.  She could still hear their screams inside her head next to the pounding of her heart.  She would cry for them later.
Right now, she just needs to keep running. Until they decided she could stop. Or until one of the remaining team members had found a way out of this dark place.
Keep going. Keep going.
Tumblr media
“Good Afternoon!” A high pitched voice squeaked near Afternoon’s ear.
“That fucking joke is dead,” she mumbled into her arm before sitting up and wiping the yuck away from her lips.
When her vision cleared, she found her bunkmate Aliah sitting on her nightstand. Aliah’s hazel eyes were trained onto Afternoon’s and twinkled with laughter. Her goddess braids that Afternoon thought were way too long to fight were spread around her thighs. The lamp and book Afternoon kept there had been moved to make way for her big ass.
Only Aliah was allowed to move Afternoon’s stuff and live. Then again, Aliah wasn’t scared of her roommate. She’d come back to life just to fuck with more of her things.  Besides Afternoon messed with her stuff too.
“It’s still fun to say though.”
I cannot wait to snatch this girl’s weave out her head.
“Girl, would you leave me alone? I’m trying to take a small nap before I whoop everybody’s ass. Especially yours.”
“You won’t be able to whoop this ass. Trust.”
Afternoon rolled her eyes before grabbing a pillow and swinging it at Aliah’s head. The cotton filled pillow did not nothing but make Aliah laugh as she smacked it away.
“Anyway, get up. Chief wants us in the training room for a debrief before we spar.”
“A debrief? The hell? For what? I’m not going on another mission. We just got back!”
“I know, Afternoon. But-”
“But nothing! Chief doesn’t have a right to send us back out there! Our team hasn’t recovered yet,” she began pacing the floor, hands stretching towards her to pull at her hair. “Hell, ‘recovered’ isn’t even the right word.  We’re just not ready for another mission.”
Aliah frowned, knowing Afternoon was right.  But it didn’t matter. If Chief wanted them to go into another mission, then into another mission they would go. Afternoon knew this.
Afternoon cursed under her breath and walked over to her closet to fish out her training clothes: a leather jumpsuit with a velcro strip across the back to stick a weapon there. Leather boots and gloves completed the look. The Facility wanted them to all look like knock-off versions of Black Widow.
The jumpsuit was tight but was easy to maneuver around it. A toolbelt sat at her waist and had an assortment of knicknacks nestled into the various pockets.  Rope, thinwire, pliers, you name it, it was there.
Once it was snug against her body, she nodded towards Aliah, who  struggled to put the suit on. The Facility hadn’t thought about the persons who may have voluptuous bodies when they recruited them. So Aliah, Afternoon, and a few others were always stuck jumping into their suits instead of sliding into them.
“You ready, girly?” Aliah asked.
“I should be asking you that,” Afternoon mocked her.. “That ass is getting bigger. You had to leap into that suit.”
“Shut up!”
Afternoon giggled as she pressed the button to open the door into the hallway. The tinted blue lamps lit the corridor. The smell of freshly baked bread drafted towards her and made her stomach grumble. The kitchen was only a floor down, and when the air shifted, they could always get a wift of what was being made for dinner.
“You shouldn’t have skipped breakfast and lunch trying to get some sleep,” Aliah admonished her, making a ticking sound.
“Can’t change my actions from earlier, so I’ll have to deal with it,” she said, shrugging.
This was  Afternoon’s pet peeve for herself. If she dwelled on the past too long, wondering where she went wrong, she might never focus on the present or the future. Her solution was to make a better choice when presented with one.
Missing breakfast and lunch for some extra sleep was a choice she decided to take on her own.  And honestly, it was worth it. She felt more revitalized than she had in days.
The doors of their floormates opened, showcasing other recruits for the Facility. The Facility had six floors in all in this building. But the Facility was housed in an old university . There were eight of them in all on this floor. Two to a room, but they were a team. Afternoon was the leader, and the rest of her team was made up of Aliah, as her second in command, Holly, Aria, Marigold,  Taylor, Lilith, Jack
The ways teams worked in the Facility was unusual for other districts. They were divided into three smaller groups that had specialized duties.
Afternoon, Aliah, and Jack made up the Action members.  Their group was essentially in charge of kicking ass first and asking questions later. They were given private lessons on the best way to disarm someone with a .47 pistol in the worst way possible. They were also taught how to use that same .47. They were taught how to protect their other team members and make extremely hard decisions if necessary.
Holly and Aria  made up the Computer Whizzes. Their group created any technology they may need on their missions like comm units and stun guns. They were in control of hacking into databases or security systems so the Covert team could get in and out.
The Covert team was made up of Marigold, Taylor, and Lilith.  If a party needed to be crashed, these three were the ones to do it. In style, no less. Dresses were Marigold and Lilith’s favorite item in their closet, since they shared a room, and Taylor was their chaperone, when they decided they didn’t want to complain about having to conform to rich society’s ideals.
Marigold and Lilith’s door was the only one that didn’t open. The two girls didn’t come out of their room and chastise Afternoon about the crust that was around her eyes. They didn’t get on Aliah’s last nerve about why she didn’t use white eyeliner to make her eyes less surprised.
They didn’t come out of their rooms with their jumpsuits half-way open to show off their impressive cleavage.
No. And it was all Afternoon could do to stop her mind from hearing their screams and the sounds of feet running.
And the laughter.
Tumblr media
Chief was a woman, who had no name other than Chief. That was what she had told them when they were first recruited. She was broad shouldered with a broad face. She was probably one of the most beautiful women in the days before the government decided to take over completely. Now she was a hardened soul of what used to be someone who partied all night long.
Blonde hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail and sea blue eyes with dark circles underneath stared at the six of the members.
Chief was standing behind her desk, arms crossed her torso.  She said nothing for a few minutes, letting her eyes linger on each of Afternoon’s team members. When her eyes landed on Afternoon, the air in the room shifted and Afternoon shivered with the amount of contempt that she was facing.
“Team Ace, please be seated. Except you Afternoon,” Chief commanded.  “You keep standing.”
As much as Afternoon wanted to throttle Chief, she obeyed and nodded towards the rest of her team. Chief may have authority over them, but the loyalty between Team Ace was through and through.
They all sat in one of the plastic chairs surrounding the Chief’s desk, while Afternoon assumed the “parade rest” stance at Aliah’s side.
“You may all be wondering why I asked you to come here. I know all of you have just come back from a very important mission,” the Chief’s eyes began to harden. “But it’s because of that mission that you’re going on this next one.” She looked directly at Afternoon as she said her next part. “Your incompetence to make good choices resulted in unfortunate casualties-”
“Marigold and Lilith aren’t dead, Chief,” Aliah interrupted.
Chief cut her eyes at Aliah’s interruption and Afternoon was afraid that the commander would slap her second-in-charge.
“They may as well be. We all know where they went!”
Her yelling made everyone wince. They did know where the two girls were. Afternoon had planned to believe that the girls were just using their resources and blending in order to escape. But the chief was right. The place they had been taken too was worse than hell itself.
“And it is your fucking fault, you stupid bitch!” Chief pointed a shaking finger at Afternoon. She was crying, those sea-blues becoming moist and red.
Jack and Taylor leapt up to keep their commander away from their leader.  None of them had seen their commander blame anyone for a mission gone wrong.  It was always the team’s fault–not a single individual. That member may beat themselves up on their own time, but the team took the brunt of it.
It’s why Aliah, Holly, and Aria stood in front of their leader ready to swing on Chief if needed.
“Marigold and Lilith made decisions that Afternoon could not change. She told us to run and that was what we all did. They decided to-” Aria began before the chief cried out:
“You think my daughters are idiots?”
Silence fell through the room as the commander’s words processed.
Jack goofily whispered loudly, “They look nothing like you.”
If Taylor hadn’t been holding Chief’s arms, Jack would have gotten knocked out.
“They look like me before the War. And their dad. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I placed that with you Afternoon. And that was a mistake.”
“Nothing about this was my mistake,” Afternoon defended herself. She wasn’t about to let Chief’s accusatory words mix with her guilt and leave her a hollow shell of misery. “Like Aria was saying, I told everyone to run. Hell, they told us to run. You saw our body cameras. Marigold and Lilith stopped and tried to find an escape. And unfortunately, they caught up to the girls.” Afternoon grimaced as she vividly remembered the screaming of the girls as they were dragged away.
Chief laughed maniacally.  “You say it’s not your fault, and yet it is!” She jerked Taylor across the table and punched Jack in the stomach, sending him to the floor holding on his stomach.
Holly screamed as Aria and Aliah raced over to check on their teammates.
“Chief, this is misconduct! Stop this now!”
“Shut up!”
Aria and Aliah had managed to help Taylor and Jack up and to a seat. The anger printed on their faces was enough to fuel Afternoon’s own rage. Not only was Chief out of her mind, but she had insulted Afternoon.
This wasn’t how a debriefing was supposed to go at all. They were supposed to receive files that were filled with notes and information pertaining to the mission. Instead, they were getting an emotional fit from their own commander.
Afternoon tried to use her calmest voice, but the underlying layer of frustration couldn’t be missed.
“My team and I will be taking our leave now. We have been insulted and abused,” she nodded towards Jack and Taylor. “We will be requesting a new commander-”
“You aren’t leaving until I say you do! Sit down!”
They refused until their legs unwillingly sped towards a seat and their asses were plopped into it.
Aliah hissed, “You’re not supposed to do that to us! What is wrong with you?” Chief said nothing but stomped over to her file cabinet and pulled out a single manila folder. She threw it at Afternoon’s head, which shouldn’t have been possible.
She picked it up and found that it was stapled together. Convenient.
“What’s this, you crazy-”
“Read it.”  The commander sat down at her desk and watched as Afternoon opened the folder.
She figured she may as well obey until the sextet could leave and report her for misconduct. Her respect for the woman had dwindled, but there was a nagging voice in the back of her mind that knew Chief was right. It was her fault.
Didn’t mean she wanted to hear it.
The tension rose in the small room as Afternoon read the contents. Each page made Afternoon’s heart beat faster.
They weren’t. They couldn’t.
She gripped the papers, crumpling them.
“We refuse this.”
“You can’t,” the commander plainly said.
“We can. We have a right to unless you’ve decided to go beyond the Facility’s rules and regulations. You’ve already broken several of them anyway.”
Chief smiled as nicely as a lion trapping its prey would.  She pushed back her chair and circled it to where Afternoon sat. She grabbed what she could of Afternoon’s leather armor and pulled her in.
Aria, Holly, and Aliah sat still but Afternoon knew that if they could, they’d be on top of the insane commander.
“Listen closely. You got my daughters taken-”
“How many times-”
Her cheek stung from the slap the commander landed on her. “I said listen closely!”
What is wrong with this woman?
“You got my daughters taken because of your choices! Now your choices will matter the most to you! I went through hell and back to get this approved by the Facility.”
“So you’re going to send me on a suicide mission?”
The team glanced at one another–the same question written on their faces.
“Afternoon, this mission is yours and yours only. I just wanted your team in here so they can witness it.”
“We’ve witnessed how deranged you are,” Aliah spat at her.
Chief wiped her cheek, never letting her eyes leave Afternoon’s, whose own eyes were wide and afraid.
The assignment was dangerous and absolutely crazy. Chief may as well have been express-shipping Afternoon to her own coffin. Her mission was to find Marigold and Lilith by going to the very place they were being kept as prisoners.
Disturbia.
The very name made Afternoon shake in her boots. Memories of the place flooded through her head. Vivid and terrifying memories that she had hoped would never resurface.
“So let’s begin with your first choice of many,  Afternoon. Do you accept this mission?”
“You aren’t really giving her much of a choice, commander!” Holly yelled.
Chief ignored her, the sea blue eyes unwavering from Afternoon’s.
“Afternoon, make your choice.”
HERE IS THE POLL

@manic-pixie-dick-girl replied to your post “How would you prefer I refer to the mechs as well...”:
Thinking on this a bit more. I think there's something sort of... Alienating, maybe... About reading numerals in fiction. It feels a bit artificial to me. Not sure if that's an everyone thing or a me thing. But that may very well be the vibe you want given that it's a hybrid human-machine consciousness you're talking about! In which case I'd use the full model + number.
So this gave me a lot to think about - or maybe its just the fever making me think very slowly -.-'
Like cause yeah we are dealing with machine-human hybrids here, but in an, IMO unconventional way based heavily off having to read "the cyborg manifesto" and watch "all watched over by machines of loving grace".
All the mechs in Tungsten Rose have AIs built into them, but they're not BT7274 or Cortana, they're like... cmd+space on a mac. They can't talk, they're not actually conscious, but they're able to take cognitive load off the pilot e.g. by switching command protocol for their drones based off circumstances, or fixing a typo they keep making while texting.
The human-machine hybrid I'm thinking off, is more along the lines of like, someone driving their car, or controlling a character in a video game. Like when you're turning left in a car, you think "i'm going to turn left", not "i'm going to turn my car to the left".
I loathe the term "realism" in regards to scifi/fantasy, but that is sorta what I'm going for here. The pilot's perception isn't elevated by plugging their brain into a super computer, its elevated by the fact that they're constantly getting readouts for 17 billion different sensors.
Humans are notoriously bad at telling distances by eye, so one of the more subtle ways I try to show this effect is by the fact that when inside their mechs, pilots always know how far away something is: because they have laser range finders, and its not any more of a conscious act for them to use it, than it is for me to mount up after combat in wow.
All that to say, a big theme in Tungsten Rose is: if you spend enough time preparing for war, you'll eventually start one. And the knights are very much the embodiment of this concept.
Mar and Kista have both been piloting mechs since they were 4 years old. They have undergone rigorous training and a lot of highly invasive surgery, because they grew up being told that one day the fascists will return and try to destroy their home and culture.
And because of this. Because they spent so much of their lives interacting with the world through the filter of a warmachine, and because they can't touch their own face without feeling subdermal armor, everything becomes an act of war.
They aren't able to take a step back, and realize they're essentially dragging the world into a war over who gets to take the pretty girl to the ball. It becomes filtered through the war machine. "It's not about my emotions, I'm protecting the princess, I'm protecting my people, I'm fighting against evil."
All this is to say, i kinda like just using numbers now, even though thats by far the least popular in the poll, specifically because it's so dehumanizing.

issue #427
This is a formal essay about jason todd as a character written for the mgi civil war event :)
(cw: a little gory?? its dc and specifically jason soo.. be careful)
Jason Todd is a fictional character set in the universe of DC Comics. He is one of the iterations of Robin and a crime boss of Gotham. Considered an anti-hero, Jason is known for taking matters into his own hands. His attitude and confirmed kill count of 83 make him fairly popular within today’s DC fandom and crossovers.
To understand Jason, you have to know his past. Jason is widely considered one of the most traumatized and mistreated characters of DC by most of the fanbase. Jason’s first appearance in the Batman comics is when he is caught by Batman while attempting to steal the tires from the Batmobile in order to pawn them for money, something he had done to several other cars before. However, the Dark Knight catches him and decides to take him to his “good friend” Bruce Wayne who adopts the boy, after learning how his parents were dead. Comics are notorious for not keeping up with continuity, leaving some debate for how old he is when he is taken in, but he is most likely somewhere around 12 years old. Before meeting Jason, Batman (Bruce Wayne) had another sidekick, Dick Grayson, the original Robin. He was an acrobat that Bruce took in after he witnessed the murder of Dick’s parents at the circus (Dick also witnessed this) and decided to prevent him from heading down the same path that Bruce had walked many years before. Around the time that Bruce meets Jason, Dick is fighting with Bruce, leading to him moving out and taking a new mantle, Nightwing, in the city Bludhaven.
In early Batman comics, Bruce is seen being unnecessarily cruel to Dick, going as far to be physically abusive towards the boy. When Jason moves in, he does not receive the same parenting from Bruce, leading to a lot of animosity between the wouldbe brothers. That leaves Jason in a new environment with no allies and nothing but his street training. He is sent to Gotham Academy, a private school filled with the children of the wealthy and upper class population of Gotham. Most of the city heard of the ward from Crime Alley that was adopted by Bruce Wayne, leading to a lot of bullying for the boy. Jason goes on to take the mantle of Robin and becomes the second sidekick to Batman.
The relationship between Bruce and Jason is complicated. Jason is the first son Bruce adopted and was the only one he adopted for a while. Throughout multiple comics and continuities, something happening to Jason, in which he dies, hates Bruce, or gets hurt, is Bruce’s greatest fear. Bruce has done things for Jason that he never did for the rest of his children, one being that he ignored the bat signal because getting Jason back after he was taken from him by the court was more important. Another time, he missed a patrol to spend time with Jason because he was sick. Bruce used to carry a photo of Jason around in his Batman utility belt. Jason’s most precious memory was of the skipped patrol when he was sick and they watched a movie together, though he did give it up during a mission with the Outlaws, a team of morally gray heroes. The two truly care about each other, but after his death, there is a lot of animosity. Both have admitted to pulling punches and throwing fights in an effort not to hurt the other.
DC Comics wanted to do something different with the newest boy wonder, leading them to allow fans to choose the fate of one Jason Todd. They asked the fans to vote whether the boy lived or died. At the end of Batman #427, Jason was left to die in a building. The inside back cover of the issue listed two 1–900 numbers that readers could call to vote for the character's death or survival. Within the 36-hour period allotted for voting, the poll received 10,614 votes. The end results were very close, with a difference of 72 votes, 5,343 votes for him to die to the 5,271 for him to live. The next issue, Batman #428, was published featuring the death of the second Robin. Later on, one writer said it was possible that hundreds of votes in the "Jason Dies" line came from a single person, leading to the realization that they could not use such a poll to quantify a character’s popularity. Among the community, there are rumors that a single person programmed their phone to repeatedly dial the line for Jason’s death over the course of eight hours.
The actual circumstances around his death are even more brutal. Jason Todd was born to Willis Todd and Dr. Sheila Haywood, although Sheila relinquished custody when Willis married Catherine Todd. Catherine was a drug addict and died from an overdose, and Willis, who had once worked for Two-Face, was sent to jail and eventually murdered by the criminal. Jason was not aware that Catherine was not his birth mother and, when he finds out, decides to find her, leading him to Ethiopia. Unbeknownst to him, the Joker, a main rival of Batman, had discovered the identity of Robin, and also found his birth mother, convincing her to work with him. The Joker goes on to viciously beat the fifteen year old Jason with a crowbar and leave him to die in a building rigged with explosives. Joker actually held Jason for a few days, beating him and torturing him mentally by telling him that Batman was not coming for him. Batman does arrive, but only in time to see the building explode. He does retrieve Jason’s body and his end is viewed as the biggest failure, by Bruce himself. Alfred, Bruce’s butler and father figure, says himself that he believes that Jason’s death hurt him more than his own parents’ because he had the ability to stop it. Jason’s last words and thoughts were of Bruce, a thank you and an apology. This isn’t even where Jason’s story ends.
Six months after his death (due to some weird dimension shenanigans involving Superboy) Jason awakes in his coffin, with no memories, and begins screaming for Bruce. He eventually digs himself out with his bare hands, and then collapses outside of the cemetery due to the injuries he received before his death not being healed. For a year, he is in a coma, and wakes with amnesia. He is recognized by a random criminal, who informs Talia Al-Ghul, a previous fling of Bruce Wayne’s, who takes him to the Lazarus Pit, which heals his injuries and returns his memories, while also fracturing his mind and leaving him with Pit Madness. After learning that Bruce allowed the Joker to go free after killing him, Jason decides to avenge himself and begins training with the All-Caste. The group does train him, but they do not support his plan for revenge so he returns to the League of Assassins, before deciding they are boring him, so he heads back to Gotham. Jason makes his return by hijacking a shipment of kryptonium from Black Mask, announcing himself as Red Hood, an old moniker of the Joker’s.
Jason discovers that there is a new Robin, Timothy Drake, and, through Pit Madness and grief, decides to kill him. Jason doesn’t just meet him in the streets. Jason makes a Robin costume, breaks into Titans Tower, and goes berserk on Tim, while venting to him about his feelings. He tells Tim how he resents that he had parents, he tells him how he’s supposed to be the replacement, he’s supposed to be the better Robin, yet Jason is beating him. He knocks Tim out and punches him again after he is on the ground, writing ‘Jason Todd was Here,’ on the walls in what appears to be Tim’s own blood. Jason obviously has a lot of motives in this action, but one is his disdain towards Bruce allowing another child to become Robin. Red Hood goes on to oppose the Bat family and become a crime boss, notorious for not putting up with any misbehavior towards children.
This, and plenty of more complex story lines that would take an eternity to go through, not counting other continuities (like the one where the Joker literally causes Catherine to overdose and sends Willis to jail, just on the off chance Jason could become Robin so Joker could kill him to hurt Batman) are what makes Jason a complex character. He has the means and motives to become one of the worst villains Batman has ever faced, and yet he decides to clean up Gotham, his way. Jason Todd came back from the dead to find that not only had his adoptive father not avenged his death, but he had also given another child the same role that had gotten him killed. Jason holds a lot of resentment towards the entire Batfamily, though for different reasons.
Jason has a very strong sense of justice that is tainted by both his time on the streets and his own death. He thinks that the only way for victims to really get justice is for him to step in. As a street kid, Jason witnessed firsthand how corrupt the police of Gotham City really were, leaving him to have no faith in any portion of the justice system, but at least he still had Batman. His mentor and adoptive father was out on the town, making things right. Yet, when it mattered the most to Jason, Bruce did not avenge him. At one point, Jason is put into Arkham Asylum, believing him to be insane, but the asylum realizes that Jason is, technically, fine, just deciding to clean up the streets in his own way, so they send him to a prison, from which he escapes. To put the cherry on the sundae, after Tim is captured and believed to be killed, Dick Grayson, as Nightwing, goes after Joker, beating him to death. Not only does Bruce try to stop him, he brings the Joker back to life. Jason has every right to want the clown dead, and yet Bruce keeps foiling his plans, despite the pain Joker has caused, not just to him and Jason, but also other members of the Batfamily. Commissioner Gordon’s own daughter, Babs, is paralyzed due to a gunshot wound from the Joker.
After his death, Jason assumes that the reason Bruce got a new Robin and never killed the Joker is that he didn’t love him, while Bruce tells Clayface that Jason knew exactly how much he loved him. The two are really just traumatized and emotionally constipated. In every Batman continuity, Bruce loses Jason because it has become such an important part of the character. Annie is an orphan, Joker is insane, Bruce loses his son. A single person, should rumors be believed, has deeply affected a character so much that every version of that character goes through the same thing, or it just isn’t the same.
Jason Todd is a unique character in many ways, from his death to his life afterwards, the character has made a mark in comics. The complexity of Jason adds to appeal for many newer readers as he is not a perfect hero as some, such as Superman, can seem. He is hurt, he is traumatized, and he is healing, making many young people relate to him more than his siblings. Jason Todd is an outstanding character who has an iconic story both on and off the page.

On Itachi, his fandom, and moral standpoints
Once again I come back with a meta, unsurprisingly, of Naruto’s manga and, more specifically, about a character in particular, Uchiha Itachi, his fandom and what it entails and represents. My decision to make him the primary focus of this meta is just to bring light (open the door for more in depth debates) of a deeper, much more complicated problem that Itachi represents, but undoubtedly surpasses him and the Naruto manga as a whole.
Be warned, my take on Itachi’s fandom does not contemplate those fans who merely enjoy him but do not negate important parts of his character, if that’s your particular case, then be assured that I did not have you in my mind when writing this. This is about, let’s say, the hardcore fandom he possesses, that justifies (and to some extent, celebrates) his implications in the UCM and blindfold loyalty to Konoha and its system.
How can I even begin to introduce Itachi’s character? What he was supposed to be and what he surprisingly became? How to start to explain his fenomenon? Itachi was not supposed to be good, from his introduction he was a manipulative, dark character that tortured physically and mentally Sasuke and was a threat to Naruto’s (the protagonist) life. At no point during the first part of the manga were we able to see glimpses of a “good” Itachi that the narrative later on tried to establish, and yet, there were three (conected) factors of imperative importance to understand the raise of his character from the first part of the manga to the other.
The first one was, let’s call it, his intrinsecal persona's appeal (and everything it encompases).
Itachi’s not the first cryptic male character that gets favored by a large part of the fandom for that mere trait (look at any shönen or show and see how many characters whose sole trait is to be mysterious becomes the fandom’s favorite), added to the fact that he’s powerful enough to subdue men who’s status of geniuses are often highlighted in the manga (Orochimaru and Kakashi), and his... physical charm, you have a powerful combo to make readers incline more and more on his favor. Itachi had sparked their interest.
There are boxes to fill to attract the public interest to a character, and Itachi filled in all of them.
The Power-Mystery-Beauty triangle is not an unknown formula (Christian Gray, Edward Cullen, to name characters from mainstream, from other manga there is Light, now surprisingly, Dabi) and in every fiction work it has appeared, it worked to lure the (female) public towards it.
But is that enough? For some, yes, for most, Itachi represents something that they desired profoundly, and that’s entirely attached to Sasuke’s character.
Even back in the first part of the manga, Sasuke’s character was received mixedly, there were people who saw his personality as too abrasive (similar to Itachi’s but because Sasuke was supposed to be with the nice guys, this aspect of him clashed rather harshly with his position on the narrative) and considered him a mere emo who believed himself to be better than Naruto and Sakura (he was, but he also acknowledged this fact, which make some readers disapprove of him even more).
Itachi challenged that “so-called” superiority, additionally downgrading and humiliating him in a way readers felt he, to some extent, deserved. The dislike of part of the fandom of Sasuke’s character found a way of purchase inside the manga. Naruto wasn’t strong enough (and eventually cared too much) to subdue Sasuke, Sakura was too in awe with him to “stand up against him”, Kakashi saw his greatness and taught him powerful jutsus while paying zero attention to his other students. Until Itachi, no other character seemed to put Sasuke “in his place”, because even the villains of each arc seemed particularly obsessed with Sasuke and Sasuke only, elevating even more his importance and status and sidelining Naruto and (of course), Sakura, who were left with mere participations in what seemed a Sasuke-focused plot. Up at this point, Sasuke was far more important than the actual protagonist of the manga but Itachi, who was actually Sasuke’s goal, who was actually the person Sasuke aspired to surpass, abused him, manipulated him and -more importantly- seemed more focused on getting Naruto -hence, retribution: the only person Sasuke seemed to care about didn’t seem care about him at all.
Itachi’s coolness, strength and mature handsomeness (that Sasuke did not present until Shippuden, but Itachi was literally introduced with), plus the dislike of Sasuke’s character and the belief that he needed to be rectified, the reason of which will be brought up next, appealed the teenage fandom in a way strong enough to catapult him inside the popularity polls just right after his presentation.
The Self-inserts inside Itachi’s fandom
As I introduced, a large part of the fandom back in the first part already, and in Shippuden particularly, had a deep dislike of Sasuke’s character and wanted him to suffer -to be beaten, to be “owned”, Itachi’s character fulfilled that wish, which takes me to the second factor.
You can’t explain this point in particular without adding the “self-insert” and “reader-insert” notions that often gets attached to Itachi (Sakura, Naruto and Hinata) fans,
“Self-insertion is a practice by authors of writing themselves into their own stories, either explicitly or in thinly-disguised form; in a fannish context this most often means fan writers writing themselves into their favorite source material so that they can interact with canon or its characters” (X)
Whilst
“Reader-Insert is a type of fanfiction, almost always written in 2nd person Point of View; the protagonist is always the reader, and is usually paired with one of the canon characters. "Reader-insert" typically has a hyphen hyphen, but is also known as Canon X Reader (sometimes CanonXReader).” (X)
In this particular case, many readers had succumbed to something slightly in between. The manga doesn’t belong to them, so the only one in position to literally self-insert is Kishimoto (canonically), so they are left with the option of attaching themselves personally to a pre-existed character with whom they feel somewhat represented. If not, then at least they attach emotionally to a character because it represents what they desire (this can be more observed in the shipping part of the fandom). Meaning, they use a canon established character that is not literally the reader, but who clearly represents them or represents what they want in their significant (romantical) other.
Sakura was the only female lead who had a crush on the cool guy, readers (particular female ones) didn’t need much to feel a connection with her (during the first part, Kishimoto didn’t even give them much to do so, but they still attached to her with the prospect of what she might become), while Naruto was the dead last, it appealed to those who also felt that they weren’t popular or were mistreated by their peers.
But what the self-inserts of Sakura or even Naruto had to do with the increasing love for Itachi?
To explain this in a way that can be understandable: Sakura fans who believed Sasuke disrespected her when not acknowledging her feelings or when downgrading her skills often turned their attention to the man of similar physique and strength to fulfill their fantasies of reciprocation -because canonically, Itachi had neither rejected, nor downgraded her character. In the same fashion, Naruto fans who believe Sasuke is egotistical by not caring for/acknowledging Naruto in the same manner he does (hence, not deserving him), tend to also indulge in the same type of behavior previously mentioned.
Later on, when the narrative introduces the idea that Itachi stands alongside Konoha (Naruto and Sakura), thus, against Sasuke (from an idealistic standpoint), this particular practice deepens, grows. They feel validated on their idea that Itachi will treat  their favorite character (them) better, while at the same time punishing Sasuke for rejecting them.
There are not many cases of Itachi self-inserts, I’m not denying their existence however because he did fulfilled a wish many readers had (against Sasuke), but Itachi’s self-insert part of the fandom seems to be more in terms of female character fans that desire their favorite kunoichi to be loved/desired/respected? by a powerful, handsome, mysterious character.
Sasuke’s importance in the narrative (and character growth)
Sasuke escaping Konoha to get to Orochimaru, train, and become strong enough to defeat Itachi and avenge his clan won’t hold up for the four hundred or so chapters Naruto Shippuden lasts. After Itachi’s defeat at his hands, Sasuke had no reason not to return to Konoha, more importantly, he had no reason to fight Naruto as it was the intention and ultimate and most important clash in the manga since the introduction of their rivalry.
Sasuke’s growth as a character (that I spoke more detailed in this post) was tied to the introduction of a deeper, more important problem: Konoha’s involvement in the UCM. It wasn’t new in Naruto to present the dichotomy and harsh truths of the shinobi system (Hyuga clan, Haku, Jinchurikis), and the intervention of Konoha’s government in the massacre of the Uchiha clan provided the narrative with a reason to have both Sasuke and Naruto fighting in different sides of the battlefield, but also presented a deeper problem: Itachi couldn’t be bad.
He couldn’t stand in the “bad” side of the field because both, that would put Naruto (the hero) in the same morally bad position, and Itachi's fandom (which was massive), was eager for redemption, they demanded it, and Naruto is not a manga that doesn’t get influenced by what its purchasers want. In consequence, they needed to justify Itachi’s actions. We can talk about how abysmally bad they did it, we can talk about how much better this problem could have been sorted out, but that is not the core of this post.
Kishimoto loved Sasuke, I have said this before, despite the fandom wishes, he stood his ground when it came to Sasuke and his revolutionary position until the very end. Maintaining that ideal as just, put Naruto (hence, Itachi) in the wrong. But because the narrative needed Naruto to be good and in the right, he ended up justifying genocide by justifying Itachi.
Consequently, and with the appeal he earned with his introduction and the Sasuke-hate (self-inserts), Itachi became a favorite character amongst favorite characters despite being a plot holes with legs. Readers eagerly consumed whatever panel proved that Itachi was not the bad guy he was previously believed to be. (proved or at least didn’t show, Itachi still commited genocide, but we don’t get to see such attrocities so its easier to forget he slaughtered innocent people, children amongst them). Readers who liked him were desperate for the narrative’s validation.
Core of the issue
Which brings me to the core of the post and in retrospection, I have already presented it: moral standpoints. This is not new, I’m not introducing any new idea, and this is hardly something that happens solely in the Naruto’s (and most specifically Itachi’s) fandom. Liking or not a character is tied to so many subjective variables that it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes a character desirable or despicable despite solid traits being commonly shared on particular troups. And yet, liking or not a character became a moral standpoint for which people judged each other on a personal level. It has happened since always, but the internet did nothing but make more accessible and public this type of clashes. Therefore, Redemption Arcs became the most precious gem inside fictional works and Naruto fell for it, and fell hard.
It’s almost mandatory to have the narrative’s validation in order to enjoy a character freely and Naruto provided it to Itachi’s fandom. His actions were justified by the manga and the most important (and beloved) characters stood by his side, even those who were victims of him forgave his actions because there was someone (with less appeal and more morally questionable actions under his belt) to blame further. Having the narrative’s moral validation is more important than actually being in the right.
Itachi was manipulated by the Will of Fire who he learned from Hiruzen who was passed to him by Tobirama who created it because he was raised during the Warring States Period, so his apprehension to the Uchiha was justified. It’s a train of justifications that ultimately holds no one responsible for the genocide of an entire clan/race which then becomes something bound to happen. So to save face, they use an escape goat: Danzo and the Curse of Hatred. They put the blame of the massacre to a single character and the actual victims because, well, they were genetically prone to disaster and killing them was the only way to ensure (temporary) peace.
Liking a character doesn’t automatically mean condoning its actions but because that subjective appeal became more and more the reflection of the reader’s ideals (for some reason I’m not here to trace), those two actions merged, which translated consequently into demanding the narrative’s validation of our tastes. There’s no denial of the pleasing sensation that comes with having the plot’s endorsement for liking a complex/morally gray or even dark character, but that approval turned to be the most important/valuable requirement, which, in turn, made readers justificate (supported by the narrative) despicable actions, such as genocide.
Let’s go back to the second bullet point, self- inserts, as to discern more in depth their reasons to look for a justification on Itachi’s character: Itachi (an Uchiha that was not affected by the Curse, as his peers were) who the narrative proclaims wanted his brother’s safety and happiness above all things, stands morally with Konoha (hence, the readers’ favorite character). Therefore, justifying his actions is justifying Sakura and Naruto’s actions against Sasuke (manipulation is alright because Itachi did it, trying to kill Sasuke because he didn’t want to bend to their will is alright because Itachi did it), it gives them reasons to believe that they are on the right side of the battlefield, it gives them moral superiority. They’re in the right, they are good people, Sasuke was too deep in his hatred to either see it or correspond their feelings and that’s why he needs to be saved, and who more appropriate to do so than the two characters that were mocked by him during the first part of the manga? Even in the end, Itachi still gives them the retribution they still feel deserve and that Sasuke -still- didn’t give.

Let’s talk about the B in LGBTQ. A recent CDC poll found that 5.5 percent of women and 2 percent of men aged 18-44 identify as bisexual, which is significantly higher than the percentage of women and men who identify as lesbian/gay (1.3 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively). Even many people who don’t identify as bi have swung both ways at least once: 17.4 percent of women and 6.3 percent of men age 18-44 surveyed have had some same-sex contact.
Yet we don’t hear all that much about bi rights. But bisexual people still face discrimination, often from unexpected sources. Here are just a few of them.
Mental Health Professionals
YouTube vlogger Connor Manning recounted an awful encounter with a therapist who told him that he isn’t really bisexual. Instead of offering him proper treatment, the therapist spent a half hour trying to convince him not to call himself bi.
About the incident, Connor says,
What if I was someone who was freshly questioning their sexuality? …For a lot of people, especially those seeking help for their mental health, these things are an issue and they’re confusing and scary. To have someone who’s supposed to be a resource I can trust, someone I can open up to, try and invalidate my identity was really deeply sad to me. I also talked to a few people about it after the fact and they told me that this is something that happens all the time, unfortunately.
Research confirms this. A 2007 study published by Columbia University Press found that more than a quarter of therapists assumed their bisexual clients needed therapy for their sexuality. About a sixth saw bisexuality as a symptom of mental illness. Seven percent of therapists in the study tried to convert their bisexual clients to heterosexuality; 4 percent tried to turn their bisexual clients gay or lesbian.
Unfortunately, the misconception that bisexuality isn’t a real, unique sexual identity is very common. It’s so common that bi rights activists have an expression for it: bi erasure. Bi erasure is pretty much what it sounds like: Insisting that bisexuality isn’t real and that bisexuals are “really” just confused straight or gay people.
Faith Cheltenham of BiNet USA says that bisexuality is often subsumed under ‘gay’, but in reality “being gay is as different from being straight as being bi is. It’s not being half straight, half gay… you’re going to have a completely different life cycle experience from your gay peers.”
A young bisexual person going through that unique life cycle might feel lonely and confused and seek a therapist for help. If that therapist just turns around and tries to suppress their sexuality, it’s devastating.
What’s especially alarming about this is the fact that bisexuals (especially bisexual women) suffer from mental health problems at a higher rate than the rest of the population. They need help more often, but they’re less likely to get it if they have to fight uphill just to have their sexuality acknowledged as real.
Immigration Officials
Since 1994, United States immigration policies have recognized persecution for LGBTQ status as grounds for asylum. However, it’s not always easy for bisexual people to gain asylum. In correspondence with Unicorn Booty, Apphia Kumar, a bi rights activist, wrote that Immigration officers aren’t properly trained to handle bisexual asylum seekers, and often don’t understand it. “They have the incorrect perception that bisexuality is a choice or can be hidden in the face of persecution or that our identities depend on the gender of our partners.”
Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit denied a bisexual Jamaican man asylum on the grounds that the man wasn’t “really” bisexual. Why not? Because he was married to a woman, even though he had dated men before and had been repeatedly assaulted for having sex with men.
Claiming that someone isn’t “really” bisexual because they’re currently an opposite-sex relationship is like claiming that someone isn’t really bilingual because they only speak one language at a time. It’s a ridiculous attitude based on broken logic. But immigration officials, even well-meaning ones, reinforce this misconception. Via email, Kumar noted that immigration lawyers often don’t understand bisexuality or they don’t consider it strong enough for an asylum claim, so “to increase the chances of someone getting asylum, they advise the asylum seeker to apply as gay or lesbian. This in fact increases the trauma of invisibility and doesn’t allow us to be our true selves in the long run.”
Their Partners
Bisexual people face a higher rate of intimate partner violence than straight or gay people. According to a 2010 survey by the CDC, a staggering 61 percent of bisexual women are raped, physically abused and/or stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetimes, compared to 44 percent of lesbians and 35 percent of heterosexual women.
Bisexual men face unusually high rates of domestic violence as well: The number is 37 percent of bisexual men, compared to 26 percent of gay men and 29 percent of heterosexual men. Interestingly, the majority of this violence is coming from an opposite-sex partner. Ninety percent of bisexual women report being abused only by a male partner, and 79 percent of bisexual men report being abused by female partners.
Why is the rate so high? LGBTQ-rights activists say it comes from cultural stereotypes that paint bisexual people as immoral and undependable. Queer activist Lola Davidson writes, “A big factor of violence towards bisexuals comes from the oversexualization of bisexuality in the media and pornography. Bisexuals are often portrayed as very promiscuous and morally-ambiguous, often cheating on their partners or threatening their identity in some way.”
Stephanie Farnsworth also believes that anti-bisexual domestic violence comes from insecurity and fear of infidelity. She writes, “Checking through messages, demanding that no alone time is spent with a person of any gender and isolating one from friends suddenly becomes the norm because bisexuality is still read as wanting to have sex with anyone and everyone even though this disregards the logic that no one would ever expect a heterosexual person to fancy everyone of a different gender to them.”
We can find an example in this in the allegedly abusive relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard and the media’s trashy response to it. Gossip rags suggested that Depp’s violence stemmed from Heard’s bisexuality, that he was afraid she would cheat on him with a woman.
Sadly, when bisexuals are abused, they might not have anywhere to go for help. At a Bisexual Community Issues Roundtable at the White House, one bi survivor of intimate partner violence told a heartbreaking story about being rejected by a battered women’s shelter:
The shelter staff told me I didn’t belong there, that they only served women abused by male partners. They referred me to a new gay community anti-battering project. That group also turned me away, saying that I was bisexual, not gay, so they couldn’t help me. What I felt too angry and defeated to say back then was, “Why can’t services be designed with bisexuals in mind? If we design services sensitive to bisexuals, they end up being responsive to both heterosexual and gay people, too, don’t they?”
The Media
Unfortunately, the media does a lot to reinforce negative stereotypes about bisexuality.
On television and in film, bisexual characters are usually portrayed as schemers, manipulators, and hedonists. Depraved bisexuals are so common in fiction that they even have their own TV Tropes entry. Here are just a few well-known examples from the list of evil, unhinged, monstrous bisexual characters:
Obviously, it’s not inherently wrong to portray a bisexual character as a bad person. But it’s a problem when an overwhelming number of dramas associate bisexuality with evil.
That Depraved Bisexual trope mostly applies to male characters. Female bisexuality is often presented as a performance meant to titillate men, or a way for a woman to sow her wild oats before settling down and having a “real” relationship with a man. The Daily Beast writes:
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to unpack the appeal of this falsified narrative of bisexuality. The concept of a bisexual or lesbian woman who needs to be “saved” from her own sexuality is essentially a revamping of the classic damsel in distress narrative, with the male character’s conquering masculinity cast in the role of hero. The character of the bisexual woman offers the potential for a killer combination of girl-on-girl action paired with the possibility of heterosexual redemption.
But it’s not all bad. We’ll always have Darryl, the goofy, paté-loving boss on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Non-fiction isn’t much better than entertainment media. Bi erasure abounds here, as news publications and biographers have a hard time acknowledging that bisexuality even exists. Many real-life bisexuals, past and present, end up referred to as either straight or gay. When actress Amber Heard announced that she had a girlfriend at a GLAAD event in 2010, the press called her a lesbian.
When actress Anna Paquin discussed her marriage to actor Stephen Moyer, Larry King asked her some really clueless questions:
King: “Are you a non-practicing bisexual?”
Paquin: “Well, I am married to my husband and we are happily monogamously married.”
King: “But you were bisexual?”
Paquin: “Well, I don’t think it’s a past-tense thing.”
Larry King: “No?”
Larry King, syndicated talk show host, holds a weirdly common misconception that bisexuality means constantly having sex with men and women simultaneously.
The LGBTQ Community
The queer community treats bisexuals like a redheaded stepchild. Gays and lesbians often have the same negative attitude toward bisexuality that straight people do. A survey published in the The Journal of Bisexuality found that bisexual people receive only a little less discrimination from gays than they do from straights.
Bisexuals make up about half of the queer community and have always played a significant role in the LGBTQ rights movement, but they receive disproportionately little support in return. In Forty Years of LGBTQ Philanthropy: 1970-2010, Funders for LGBTQ Issues reports that bisexuals receive the least amount of funding out of all targeted LGBTQ sub-groups, less than 0.1 percent. Gay men received the most funding.
Tumblr media
Back in 1999, Dan Savage told gay men not to get into relationships with bisexual men. Savage has softened toward bisexuals since then and insists he’s not biphobic, but in a more recent thinkpiece, he totally dismissed the concept of biphobia and suggested that bisexuals were to blame for discrimination against them because they weren’t out enough. Savage also wrote that it is “difficult for me to accept a bisexual teenage boy’s professed sexual identity at face value.” That’s not very different from clueless straight people who think that gay teens are just going through a phase. Coming out as bi is hard enough without getting shade from the people who are supposed to be your allies.
Bi people have to fight to make their voices heard in the queer rights movement. When they express their sexuality, they are often met with hostility. Bi activist RJ Aguiar says that when he wore his #StillBisexual shirt to the 2016 LA Pride Parade, he was “met with a lot of silent, sideways looks, and even the occasional remark like, ‘What are you doing here? This isn’t for you. Go home.’ “
Telling a bisexual person that they’re not welcome at an LGBTQ Pride Event is appalling. The queer community has to do better, and stop trying to chase the B out of LGBTQ.
