Prince :3

(erm…no name yet 👍), 1st member of MISTY KNIGHT WONDER

An ex-ice skater who has found refuge in the art that is music. There isn’t a day that passes where Prince tries to forget the mistakes of the past. Word got around to them about another individual who wishes to imagine a future. Tracking them down to the school's music room, Prince decided to take a shot in the dark and ask the rather pretty individual to form a duo with them, promising something new for the two of them. And Prince never goes back on a promise.

As mentioned before, Prince wants to be able to imagine a future. They want to see past tomorrow, not just to spend life thinking about their past. They have a terrible habit of dwelling on the past, sometimes spending hours at a time thinking about what they could’ve done differently, what they could’ve done better. Because they could’ve, they should’ve…they just wish they were giving one more chance at redemption. Their personal favorite memory to think back on when these thoughts occur (not actually their favorite…they hate it a lot wwww) is when they landed wrong on their ankle during the semi-finals of a fairly prestigious ice-skating tournament. (but that’s like…another post for me to ramble about so i won't go too much into it rn). Simply put, this is what they think about most often when the nights are just a bit too quiet for their comfort.

Prince isn’t too complex. Anyone can understand their personality on a surface level. They’re fairly energetic yet reckless. A bit headstrong and stubborn at times, and sometimes struggles seeing other people's point of view. The way they think is the way they think, and it can be a challenge to get through that. They hate having to admit they’re wrong because of this. They might need an outsider in whatever situation to help them see why the other person may be upset and get them to apologize, but they are always sincere when they do apologize.

Prince being so set in their way of thinking has caused a string of strained relationships from their time being an ice-skater. If others were to bring up said people who may hold a grudge to them, they’d probs say something like “erm…whoops.” /j But on a serious note, Prince gives up hope waaay too easily if a problem arises in a friendship. After a while, Prince recognizes that they were in the wrong for whatever happened between the two and sort of…moves on. There is no reconciliation, no closure. Prince is more than happy to go their separate ways. If the other person wants to rebuild that friendship, well, that ship sailed. Prince moved on, why can't they?

Erm…Prince is silly i promise :3 Prince is fairly wealthy! (the story of wealth is…another ramble…im sorry wwww) They enjoy buying things for their friends + lover….especially their lover Knight…omg…Prince is so truly madly deeply in love with Knight (one direction reference im sorry). Should Knight so much at glance at something while the two are shopping, Prince’ll buy it in a heartbeat!

Uhm…im not good at this IM SORRY…my boyfriends oc post is much better and much cooler than this and actually makes sense…i’ll repost (reblog?) his oc, Knight, after i post this

Lolo and Nik Golden Skate interview pt 2:

Q: compared to the Olympic season when you scrapped the FD, was it more comforting to have the same underpinning for the entire (2022-23) season [bc they kept the same program]?

N: it's like when you have pieces of clothing that you bought but you don't wear because you realize they're not super comfortable [that first FD from the Beijing season] could have been a masterpiece at a different time or a different approach, but for whatever reason they couldn't give it what it needed to be received well -- whether it was the mental space they were in- it's really stressful to change programs mid-season, to feel they couldn't make it the way they wanted. so last season, having belief in the programs that they're good content and good programs made it less stressful. in general, any programs that the skaters believe in will be good, so "it's really about us as performers, we really have to believe in what we do"

Q: you earned personal best scores at 4CC and Worlds - were those goals of yours, do you crunch numbers-

L: i personally don't crunch numbers. we sometimes have lessons with Patrice where he loves to bring numbers in. He (Nik)'s a big numbers guy. when they talk together, i just let them talk, i get lost into numbers, i get too in my head, and i need to get and stay in my body. i need to trust-- if i do what i need to do, i'll get the points i want. and it is very simple. we still discuss about it - you're going to lose 5 points if you do this, you're going to lose 5 points if you do that, you're going to gain 5 points if this-- we know it -- ice dance, it's the details...

N: the conversation to me is interesting. i have the same kind of brain for points that Patrice has, so maybe when i'm coaching i'll engage in those conversations. but when i'm skating, you're right, i'm not out there calculating anything. but if you're a team getting mostly +3's and you're against a team that's getting half +4's, you're 6 points behind. total. which is huge. that's the difference between 4th and 1st place almost. in one program. so. there are some things that you cannot do if you want a +4 or +5. it's written in the rules, capped at a +3 - so those things [emphatically] you have to pay attention to - at the beginning of the season, but it's 2nd nature [by the time you're] working towards Worlds and you know stuff is working, you've got the scores, then it's like she said, you have to go out, you have to perform, you're not thinking about it, you know inside your body that when you do it the way you want to do it, you're going to get the scores that you want to get

Q: so avoid tripping on your skirt

Lolo and Nik laugh: exactly!

Q: did the skirt haunt you?

N: it haunted her, it didn't haunt me, because i knew it was never going to happen again

L: didn't haunt me, i would say no. was i angry about the fact that it happened in the moment, yes

Q: did you figure out a different way?

L: we figured out a way to bring it forward in the wind

N: it's an extra layer of complexity

L: it brought an extra layer of complexity to the program, but it brought so much more to the program to have a skirt like that, that it was worth taking the risk. good thing it happened at Nationals, so we worked on it with Marie so that it was good for the next competitions

N: we had people saying costume malfunctions aren't worth it, but i was completely thinking different about it. we're wearing costumes that should complement the program or do something *for* it. i knew we had to do it because - in france all these girls were running up to her and saying omg i've never seen someone who can skate like that with a skirt, it's like a 3rd person you're dancing with and you're using it - when you do a program like that, you need to do it- there's no cutting 12 inches off the skirt- that's the skirt you need for that program and it worked perfectly. are we ever going to have a skirt like that again? i don't think so

#this is so good #her saying so clearly i need to be in my body not my head #and him talking about GOEs in the +3's vs 4's and 5s #very few teams in the world are at this level that they're realistically aiming for +4 +5 #and i love that they're willing to talk about it #minutes 5-12

anon, youre the lol thank you sm for asking bc i spent forever thinking about it and now this is my little rant about them, plz say if you want more

they meet when some of the msby jackals rent out a gym space during the off season and it’s in the same sports complex as a rink. they’re a big crowd so they think it’s a minor level hockey team but are pleasantly surprised when they find out it’s a figure skating competition. it’s kinda like a love at fist sight think: omi just thinks it’s so graceful what she does yk like he sees how hard it is and is just entranced by how effortless she makes it look. he stays around after, complimenting her program and of course congratulating her on winning. she thinks it’s cute how shy he is and obviously how handsome he is so she gives him her phone number. their first date is at a café, followed by a day skating where omi is wobbling around on his skates, grumbling about how he thinks he’s gonna fall. when they become bf/gf they keep it private, especially because omi knows how certain people on the team would tease him. they move in together after about six months i want to say and they both have pretty busy schedules with their practices and what not yet the find a lot of chances to spend together. via going on runs together, working out, showering, always making time for a meal together and of course trying to align their rest days. omi tries to teacher vball but it’s not a match and she makes up a little dry land routine for them which includes big lifts and stuff. they have fun cuz they’re kinda ying and yang energy; a big scary wing striker and a smaller, gracious figure skater (what they have in common is being such dedicated, fierce athletes). she always watches his games even if it’s through a screen and whenever she has competitions he watches and makes sure to always give her flowers after. i think they’re relationship becomes public because of atsumu… omi leaves his water bottle or coat or something at the gym after going home early and atsumu volunteers to bring it to him. when he gets there he’s surprised to see someone other than his teammate answer the door, thinking sakusa gave him a fake address or something. she’s wearing a face mask and cute donut patterned pajamas along with an msby practice t-shirt, which is pretty suspicious to him. he looses his mind when sakusa— a sorta stubborn, blunt, seemingly cold hearted man— comes to the door wearing patching pj pants, a face mask and a bring pink fluffy headband to hold his curls back. meaning, the secrets out of the bag and it’s not like they care that much, it gives them the perfect chance to start posting each other, especially since omi was selected for the olympic team. theyre always so supportive of each other positing each other all over social media and they’re instantly loved and labeled a power couple… okay that’s enough for now omg if you read all that ily

OMG ITS BEEN SO LONG!!! not my best but im glad im getting back into it! see y’all soon 😎

“You’ve really never been to New York?” Amelia asked Kai as the pair walked out of JFK.

“Never. As I’ve told you, I’m married to that lab.”Smirking, as they lingered behind Amelia. They were slightly overwhelmed by the amount of people surrounding them, this was something out of their ordinary, but with Amelia there it was worth it.

“Well we came at the best time, Christmas in New York is amazing.”

“You know we have actual work we need to do.” Kai reminded as they settled down into the taxi.

“I know, but as much as I love brains, Christmas in New York is something I believe needs to be experienced by everyone. Even if that means we spend a little time away from brains.” Amelia smiled, allowing her dimple to appear, making Kai’s heart race. With anyone else they would’ve been irritated to be taken away from the lab, but something was different. They almost wanted to blow off the lab to do all the magical Christmas in New York things.

“Okay, but when Hamilton gets pissed at us it’s on you.”

“Deal.” Amelia held her hand out to shake on it, but ended up interlocked their hands together. Making Kai roll their eyes at the cheesiness of the situation, but secretly loving it.

“I don’t know why people like this, it’s so cold.” Kai complained as they trudged beside

Amelia.

“You literally live in Minnesota.”

“It’s different. The people here are rude, it’s adding to the cold ambiance.”

“Come on just survive until we get to the cafe.”

“Why can’t we just take a taxi?”

“It’s not the same!” Amelia exclaimed, faking a hurt expression.

“Alright but if I get hypothermia it’s on you.”

“Well maybe if you stopped your complaining you’d realize we’re here.” Kai stopped walking, rolled their eyes,and looked at the building before opening the door for Amelia.

“You find a seat and I’ll go get us some coffee.” Kai nodded in agreement and found a half booth, and found themselves looking out the window at the ice skaters. As a kid they played a lot of hockey, and found themself actually wanting to skate with Amelia. Something that threw them for a curve, romance and the things couples did wasn’t something they ever thought about. But now with Amelia, they found themselves wanting to do it all, and pretend they were in a Hallmark Christmas special.

“Cheesecake?” Kai asked as Amelia came back to the table. “I thought we were getting coffee to warm up.”

“We can, but you need to try this. It’s the best cheesecake you’ll ever have in your entire life.”

“My entire life?” Kai asked as they picked up the form they were handed.

“Your entire life.” Amelia nodded, encouraging them to try it.

“Mkay it not terrible.” Kai admitted.

“Oh shut up, you know it’s the best.”

“Alright it’s definitely up there.” Kai smiled before taking another bite. “Do you think we can do that?” They pointed out the window to the ice skaters.

“Really? You want to do ice skating?”

“Yeah why not, I’m not great but if you’re there to help me I’ll be fine.” Kai internally laughed, knowing they’d probably out skate Amelia.

“I don’t know how much he’ll I’ll be.” Amelia beamed. “The last time I went ice skating I sprained my ankle, so if that happens you’ll be stuck with that mess.”

“How’d you sprain it the last time?”

“I took Meredith’s kids, and her youngest fell and the oldest almost ran over her fingers. So I maneuvered myself to prevent that, no fingers were cut but I couldn’t walk for a week.”

“That god complex isn’t just in the OR huh?” Kai joked.

“Hey! That wasn’t a god complex move that was me preventing my niece from having no fingers.”

“I was just messing with you.” Kai smiled, relaxing a bit. They loved when Amelia got flustered.

“All right, I’ll try to help you skate, but I’m not great myself.”

Amelia admired as Kai maneuvered a syringe into an artificial brain. No matter what lab they were in, Kai always beamed this was their happy place. Amelia had pretty much only dated surgeons or other people in medicine, but no one had ever matched her passion for it as Kai did.

“Are you gonna keep staring at me or actually help?” Kai playfully asked, as the extracted the needle.

“Why don’t we go ice skating now?” Amelia suggested.

“You are always itching to be in the lab, why are you so desperate to get out.”

“Because it’s Christmas time and we’re in New York freaking city, the place where Christmas was intended to be.”

“It’s cute seeing you like this you know. But seriously after ice skating we’ve got to actually get a substantial amount of work done.”

“I hate you.” Amelia glared as she gripped onto the side of the wall, as she watched them twirl around. “How do you know how to skate so well?”

“15 years of hockey.”

“You are the worst!” Amelia exclaimed as she pushed herself off the wall, Kai then catching her and helping her maneuver over the ice.

“My dad said that when I first started skating at 4 I was already crossing while skating.”

“Oh shut up!”

“I thought you were gonna be the one helping me.” Kai joked, a comfortable silence enveloping them as Kai support Amelia as the pair skated.

“How many times have you even skated.” Kai asked breaking the silence.

“Tons of times, I grew up around here.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, it was always a tradition to go skating. That’s the only reason I do it, my brother loved traditions. They were real important to him, I like to keep him alive that way.”

“Oh wow I’m so sorry I didn’t realize he had passed.”

“You just keep winning points with me.” Amelia smirked in a morbid way, she loved not just being stuck as Derek’s little sister.

“I know we’re not sharing a milkshake in a sterile lab.”

“This isn’t sterile.” Amelia snorted.

“We’ll it’s not a place intended for milkshakes. And this is not the season intended for milkshakes.”

“You know you try to have this Debby Downer façade but I see right through it. You love all this.”

“You know I do. This is the first Christmas season in a loooong time I haven’t been in a lab, and though I love my work, it’s good to spend the season differently.”

“Thanks for letting me subject you to it.” Amelia smiled swaying side to side in the rolling chair. “You know if you dint have any plans my sisters and I usually host this big Christmas dinner if you want to come, I know it’s kinda out of your way from Minnesota to Seattle but it’s available if you want to.”

“I’d love too.” Kai answered, quicker than they normally would have.

“Sounds like a plan.” Amelia smiled trying to conceal her blush.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Kai echoed.

Who's my favorite character to write? OMG this is a hard one!

But I think I have to say Anna. She's actually so much more complex than she seems and she's so passionate. And she's also not perfect, and I think characters with flaws feel more real. I also get so much range out of her! She's always different but still Anna at her core. Like in Sophisticated Grace she's this badass, clumsy chick with an explosive temper who's fiercely loyal and never gives up on to the people she loves; in Seeing is Believing, Hearing is Deceiving she's a 27 year daddy's girl who's born in the wrong century and a hopeless romantic waiting for "the one"; and in Uncertain Uncertainties she's an immature yet extremely intelligent philosophy major with such high self-esteem that the possibility of someone not liking her is unfathomable, yet somehow she can't see what's right under her nose.

Kristoff is an almost close, but not quite, second. I've written him as a jaded yet lonely man who wants nothing from life but to have a family to care for and love (ok, this one's as close to perfect as they come, but I'm ok with it!) in Love, Essentially; a 42 year old rock star with all the maturity of a 22 year old prankster trying to escape his past by doing absolutely about it in Sophisticated Grace (Usually in fanfic he's brooding, serious, prepared for things to go wrong, but I love seeing a goofy Kristoff like in OFA and Frozen Fever!); and a dedicated gymnast intent on a lonely life because love and friendship would get in the way of accomplishing his goals (Atohallan Olympics series).

Other characters I've written once or twice that bear honorable mentions are Ryder (a lovesick and rebellious skater who escapes an emotionally abusive home to be free yet homeless in the Atohallan Olympics series); Gale (a mysterious romance author/book store owner in Always); goat!Sven (a mischievous matchmaker with a penchant for apples in Iduna's Apple); and Ariel (a proudly promiscuous bombshell with daddy issues, legs up to here, and a shoplifting problem who meets her best friend in juvie in Separation Anxiety and a curious, creative, and romantic preteen who wishes she was a mermaid in Love, Essentially).

Sk8 Character Thoughts

Yeah, so y’all have to deal with me venting my latest obsession, lol. Sorry to everyone who followed me for other stuff, I will get back to it eventually. ^^;

I was gonna write out individual walls of text for everyone to be fair, but I decided that’s too much work and I’d go crazy before I finished (plus I’m feeling guilty for neglecting my fanfiction writing), so I’m just gonna bullet point some of the random things I think about various skaters (opinions and theories).

The order is the approximate order of which I like characters, though it’s not a strict ranking. I like most of the characters in the show to some extent.

Adam (Shindo Ainosuke)

I’ve already said a lot about him, you can check it out here and here. I’ll probably end up saying more about him before the show ends, too. xD

Yes, he is an absolutely awful person, but that’s what makes him amazing.

I will say that he needs a better costume designer. He looks like a clown. It looks like something that he designed when he was, like, five years old.

The mask is great though. <3

Cherry Blossom (Sakurayashiki Kaoru)

I love the super analytical types, but I also feel like Carla is a crutch for him. He’s a great skater, but if he didn’t have Carla, I don’t think he’d be able to compete at the level of the other top skaters. But all the more props to him for finding a way that he could compete at that level.

He totally had a thing for Adam before. But I think that even then, Adam was too fucked up to be able to have a romantic relationship, so nothing came of it. Because if Adam did actually learn what real love was like rather than confusing abuse for love, I don’t think he would have turned out the way he did.

It’s pretty clear that until he gets smacked by Adam, he’s still looking up to Adam and clinging to what they had before. And it bleeds into his non-skating life as well: when he did his calligraphy demonstration, I think that he hoped Adam would see it, which was why he picked that specific phrase and explained it--to let Adam know that it wasn’t too late to make amends (not that Adam would have given a fuck even if he did see it).

I love his character design as a teen, and I’m sad that he’s become more respectable-looking (though still hot af) as an adult. I’m a sucker for guys with long hair in anime/manga.

He is absolutely a weeb. He’s made an AI assistant who he calls Carla, which creeps out Joe (in a cute, lovable way, not in an Adam way), and he incorporates her into almost all aspects of his life. Like, he just happens to have an AI-augmented wheelchair handy, why?

He also dresses up like a ninja when he’s skating, goes around in a kimono in his daily life, etc. etc. Okay, maybe the kimono can be excused since he’s a calligrapher (though I’m pretty sure that’s not the norm regardless, except for maybe if the artist is at some sort of exhibition?), but people’s costumes seem to show off who they really are beneath the mask they put on for society. So Cherry secretly wants to be a ninja. xD

I’m not on any specific ship, but if I had to pick one to board, it would be Matchablossom.

Can we please have a spinoff that’s just about Adam, Cherry, and Joe when they’re teenagers?

Snow (Hasegawa Langa)

Frankly, Langa’s only up this high because I love his dynamic/rivalry with Adam. If Adam didn’t exist, he’d be below Joe, maybe below Tadashi.

Not that I don’t like Langa, but he’s just an oblivious skating nerd. He’s skilled and passionate, but I don’t really feel that he really stands out as a standalone character. He’s more of a foil for other characters (mostly Adam and Reki).

I guess what stands out the most to me is his ability to improvise when he’s falling behind, since his skill level is understandably lower than most of the other people he skates against. Like finding alternative pathways to the finish line versus Shadow and Miya, or using Joe’s strength to propel him forward. Or just, like, flying off the edge of a cliff to take a shortcut. That too. xD

His snow motif is pretty cool. (No pun intended.)

And I won’t deny that he’s cute. He’s actually the reason I started watching, because I saw some fanart of him and got curious. Came for the Langa, stayed for the Adam. <3

I feel bad for him for having a jealous jerk as basically his only friend though.

Joe (Nanjo Kojiro)

He’s such a teddy bear. <3

Joe’s the heart to Cherry’s brain, and I adore the way they balance each other out. I love Vitriolic Best Buds.

What surprised me, though, is that Joe seems to have a better understanding of Adam’s current character than Cherry does, since Cherry is so precise and analytical. Though the flashback clarified that some since it’s pretty obvious that Cherry is/was biased where Adam is concerned. Sure, Joe was also friends with Adam back then, but it seems that Cherry was the one most star-struck by Adam.

But Joe obviously knows and accepts that Adam’s changed, unlike Cherry, though he probably doesn’t know the reason why. He seemed to be expecting something to happen during the race, so it didn’t surprise him when it did, though he was sad/disappointed by it. It seemed like he was concerned and wanted to warn Cherry before his race (which is super cute), and when everyone else was flinching from seeing the assault on Cherry, Joe didn’t look away. I don’t think he knew exactly what Adam was going to do (I don’t think anyone did, lol), but he knew Adam was going to do something.

I don’t think he was serious when he said the reason Adam is avoiding their beefs is because he’s afraid he’ll lose, though. Yeah, he wants to race Adam, and he wants to win, but I think he’s more grounded when it comes to Adam, so he probably knows that Adam would beat him if it came down to it. Whereas Cherry legitimately thought he could win if Adam held back.

Also, his skateboard wheels are ridiculous. How do they even work?

Snake (Kikuchi Tadashi)

He got an ask post, yay, so not going to rehash it here.

I really hope that Adam realizes at some point that Tadashi is the only person who really knows and understands him, and comes to appreciate everything that Tadashi’s done for him.

Miya (Chinen Miya)

Such a brat, omg.

I get that he’s a kid, and kids are brats, and so it’s a fairly realistic depiction. I just hate kids. >.>

Pretty much the only time I’ll really like a child character is when they’re precocious as fuck and not child-like at all, which I get defeats the purpose, but that’s me.

Brattiness aside, he is skilled and appreciates Reki standing up to Adam on his behalf, so much so that he’s willing to spend his time training a “slime” just so Reki doesn’t get completely crushed by Adam. And he’s also willing to work with Langa to teach him the most difficult trick in skating (the Caspar Slide) for the same reason.

Ultimately, he’s a good kid, but he’s had some bad experiences that make it harder for him to trust people since he’s afraid they’ll leave him. He’s still willing to try, though, if people will give him a chance.

Also, the one ep when they go on vacation and Miya pretends Joe is his daddy (and Cherry is his mommy, rofl--hi Matchablossom!) to drive away the women Joe’s hitting on... hilarious.

Kyan Reki

An even bigger brat.

Again, yeah, he’s a teenager and teens are “just like that,” but I hate those kinds of characters.

Just because his friend is a skating genius, he gets all pissy and stops being friends with him? Showing up to cheer Langa on and then completely running away doesn’t redeem him in my eyes. I get that he’s disappointed that he’s not capable of skating at the level of the top skaters and frustrated that Langa surpassed him so easily, but that’s no excuse to take it out on Langa (or anyone else).

And everyone complains about Adam being possessive, but they just gloss over the fact that Reki repeatedly tries to force Langa to promise to not skate against Adam, even roping in their manager, when he knows that Langa likes accepting challenges and has fun doing them. He just wants to keep Langa to himself, and he’s jealous as fuck that Langa is obsessed with skating against Adam.

Langa even explicitly tells him that he’s not racing Adam just because he’s upset about what Adam did to Reki, but because he wants to do it. Which is the exact same fucking reason Reki gives for not listening to Joe and Miya, and Langa supports his decision then. Why can’t Reki do the same?

Yes, he’s traumatized because his friend who introduced him to skating was seriously injured and had to quit skating, and he got hurt skating against Adam, but just like for Adam: YOUR TRAUMA/BACKSTORY DOES NOT JUSTIFY YOUR BEHAVIOR.

Plus, the whole “we’ll never disappear from your sight” that he told Miya? Psych!

Like, seriously. He knows the kid has abandonment issues because people leave him because he’s too good at what he does, and then he just goes ahead and poofs, putting both Miya and Langa through the same exact fucking thing.

Though I’m sure that the power of friendship will give him a miraculous recovery and he’ll build a new board for Langa so Langa can beat Adam before Adam gets hauled off to jail. It’ll probably be a cheesy make-up where Langa says something about how he can only use Reki’s boards, so it’s like they’re skating together when he races or whatever.

I do respect his ability to observe other skaters and make boards that are perfectly suited to them, though. And he knows that he’d be good in that support role. But he wants to be the hero, so he’s suffering from eighth grader syndrome and lashing out because reality doesn’t conform to his wishes.

Shadow (Higa Hiromi)

Just fucking die already, ‘kay?

I don’t even know what to say. He’s all caught up in his “antihero” complex or whatever (I don’t even remember if that’s the right term, and I don’t give a fuck), and he’s got a nasty personality. Like burning Reki’s board or threatening to have a guy tattoo “Dumpster Slut” above his girlfriend’s name.

You really expect me to believe that he’d treat his manager respectfully if they started dating when he does something like that? His polite florist persona is such a sham.

And he’s a shit skater. How the hell is he in the top 8? If they can throw in a random guy we’ve never seen before (Harry), then they could have just as well put in some other trash mob instead of Shadow, who only didn’t get knocked out in the quarterfinal round because he was racing a nobody.

Imo, all of his “cute” little tricks like throwing fireworks at his opponent or shining a laser into their eyes is worse than what Adam does. Once he does that, he relinquishes all control over the situation, so anything could happen, such as his opponent crashing into a wall or falling off a cliff, which could result in serious injuries or even death. On the other hand, Adam always remains in control when he’s trying to throw off his opponent by forcing them to dance with him and freaking them the fuck out by pushing their limits. Even when he’s holding Reki’s head about an inch above the ground, he won’t let Reki brain himself on a rock or something. And even when he smacks Cherry with his skateboard, his attack leaves Cherry conscious and so lightly injured (relative to what could have been) that he doesn’t even need to stay in the hospital. (I don’t think he actually needs a wheelchair, other than probably being a bit woozy from a concussion, maybe. And maybe not even that if Joe isn’t concerned enough to wake him up/keep him from being unconscious.) Yeah, Adam fucks with his opponents, but if they can get over it, they can get back on a board. There’s a good chance that won’t happen if they get in an accident caused by Shadow, other than for anime logic.

“What about Adam’s Love Hugs??” What about them? Yes, he’s not holding on to his opponents to control their falls, but the point of it is to make them flinch and fall backwards, against the line of motion. That naturally will decrease the severity of their physical injuries, unlike when Reki and Harry fall off the course at full speed versus Shadow.

The only reason he doesn’t have a higher body count than Adam (or even a literal body count) is plot convenience, since he’s not the villain.

Omg OK so there’s yet another gay 90210 storyline that I feel compelled to offer commentary on, and this one’s perhaps the most frustrating one of all (which is saying something because none of the gay representation on this show has been what I’d call good, and in fact most of it has only served to make me hate these self-involved heteros even more).  So here we are. It’s season 9, and all the drama is extremely contrived at this point, and you can tell that the writers are basically just pulling ideas out of a hat. What if Val murdered her dad? What if Dylan came back? What if Donna had a heretofore unmentioned cousin who was a pro figure skater and also a pro schemer? It’s from this context that we get “hey, what if Steve’s mom was gay?”  Personally, I’ve always appreciated the continuity with Steve’s family life. His parents are pretty well-rounded characters with full, consistently plausible(ish) backstories, which is more than I can say for half of the regular characters on this show (*cough cough* Noah). Given that, is it random and contrived for Samantha to come out as a lesbian? Yeah, probably. I don’t think this was some grand plan that the writers had been sitting on for nine years, just waiting to reveal. But I don’t really care because it’s also true to life. A lot of people come out in middle age if not later, and this was a post-Ellen world after all. Being a gay celebrity (Steve’s mom is a sitcom star) was no longer unheard of. However, it was still considered a huge risk to come out as gay and still expect to find work (especially if your work was expected to be “family friendly”). So the conflict here is timely, and fairly realistically written. The actress who plays Samantha, Christine Belford, sells it, and there’s a nice sense of empowerment that comes through in her character, who is clearly not willing to tolerate the bullshit box that society wants to put her in. There’s the makings of a truly compelling story here. But of course that’s not what we get, because man, does Steve piss me off in these episodes, and as per fucking usual, the writers completely let him off the hook.  When Samantha first comes out to Steve, he’s shocked. Fair enough. But it’s not long before he begins to place lots of unfair judgment on his mother (despite David trying to talk him down by saying lesbians are valid because two girls making out is a turn on…thanks for that David). Eventually he goes so far as to remind the reporter from a gossip magazine who contacts Steve for comment regarding rumours of his mom’s sexuality that’s he’s adopted. Naturally, Samantha takes this as tacit admission that he’s ashamed of her, as she sees this as being Steve’s way of distancing himself from her and her sordid Lifestyle.™ Which it absolutely is. This is where we get the exchange pictured above in which Samantha justifiably questions Steve’s selfish expectations of her and he comes back with this WAY HARSH slap in the face. He immediately regrets it, but the damage is done. His true feelings are crystal clear.  And to be clear, my issue is not with Steve’s homophobic feelings. I actually think that, especially for the late 90s, Steve’s reaction isn’t that unusual (sad though that may be), and I think there’s lots to be gained from digging into the ways in which latent homophobia can manifest itself in unexpected ways, and how that can cause massive problems within otherwise close families. No, my issue with this episode is with how Steve’s homophobic feelings are resolved. The storyline culminates in Samantha getting fired from her much-hyped comeback sitcom once she’s outed. And it’s not until this happens that Steve finally starts to come around. But this is what pisses me off the most, because right up until then, Steve is only thinking of himself, and how his mother’s sexuality impacts his life. He even goes so far as to question why she adopted him in the first place, asking if it was part of her heterosexual cover up. My good God, this is some hetero nonsense that I simply CAN. NOT. Anyway, when she drops the bomb that she got fired, suddenly Steve becomes protective of her and is furious that she has to suffer such injustice. But…like…BRO. You were literally JUST treating her the same way. The whole thing reads as “you’re my mom, and I can be homophobic and treat you like a pariah, but the rest of the world? HELL NO!”  And honestly, like so many Very Special Episodes of 90210, it’s not the fact that the characters are flawed that’s the issue. The problem is that no one ever learns from their flaws or has the opportunity to grow in a realistic way. The characters are often depicted as having latent (and sometimes straight up blatant) prejudices, and that is okay, because we literally all do. But almost every time, these prejudices only function to give the main characters an opportunity to simply change their mind and get a pat on the back for doing the bare minimum. Steve’s relationship with his mother changes exclusively as a result of external factors completely outside of his control. He doesn’t have to do anything. He barely even apologizes! It totally feels like the show is condoning Steve’s earlier behaviour, which feels pretty retrograde by today’s standards, and I’m sure was not particularly progressive even by 90s standards. It pussyfoots around the complexities of the questions it raises, and to be honest, that always leaves a bit of an icky taste in my mouth, because it seems clear that the issue isn’t being raised out of interest in exploring it - it’s being raised to pose as a problem for the straight characters.  Still, I don’t want to speak for all queer audiences, but I for one am very used to accepting scraps. I mean fuck, this blog literally exists because I projected a non-existent romance between Dylan and Brandon on to the show because queer audiences are so used to having to do the work that most shows won’t in terms of creating queer characters. So to see a show like 90210 actually attempting to address queer issues on TV in the 90s (however shallow and frustrating the end result may be), is still satisfying. It was a worthwhile endeavour, and many similar shows did it well. And as much as I’m tearing into this episode, I’m still glad it exists because even though it provides no answers or legitimate commentary (90210 is weirdly centrist when it comes to political and social issues), it at least acknowledges that gay people exist, and that they can be middle-aged mothers, which is a demographic that doesn’t even get a ton of representation now, let alone in the 90s. Most coming out narratives follow teens or twentysomethings, which is fine, but coming out can happen at any age, especially in the 90s when the stigma was only just starting to lift, and many people who had been closeted for decades felt like they could finally come out. And for all my issues with the way Steve is portrayed, Samantha’s portrayal feels surprisingly tender and sympathetic. But, like so many queer characters, she ultimately shows up only to offer complications for the straight people around her before vanishing into thin air, because this was the last episode Samantha appeared in.  At least this way I can imagine her living her best gay life somewhere.

Viktor is one of those guys who can act like a Prince in public, and when he’s alone he sort of forgets himself. He talks to himself, walks around his place nude, will spend HOURS painting his nails, and plays little songs on pieces of furniture- all because he’s been alone so long. ((He still forgets himself when he and Yuuri are sharing their apartment. Yuuri falls in love with him a little more everytime he catches Viktor aggressively thumping his hands against the table to “we will rock you”

Yuuri is pretty sure he will never get tired of learning about Victor Nikiforov.

He knew it back then when he was a teenager, excited to get his hands on the new magazine that featured Victor’s latest interview—and is sure of it now when he gets to wake up in the same bed, call him love and gaze lovingly at the golden ring around his finger.

Truth is: Victor Nikiforov is a fascinating man, complex and deep and Yuuri turns out to be a passionate student on all things about his Victor.

It had been a slow work in progress since the moment Victor set foot in Hasetsu, and Yuuri doubted he would ever get to learn everything about him. There was the initial shock—Victor Nikiforov? In my home?—that took some getting used to, and the amazement that followed that surprise that blurred his scientific observations in the following days (or rather, weeks). But Yuuri Katsuki is a competent researcher, avid learner, an observant person. Nothing escapes his meticulous eyes when it comes about Victor Nikiforov.

Well… some things, actually. Yuuri is but a human.

It’s easy to tell that Victor is trying his best to act at ease on those first few days, and there’s an irony in it that makes Yuuri laugh in the middle of the night when the realization hits him. Of all people, Victor Nikiforov is nervous around him, the underwhelming Yuuri Katsuki.

(But there was a reason for Victor to come all this way to coach him, right? Perhaps he shouldn’t be laughing at the man’s nervousness.)

They’re strangers, so it is only natural that they are uneasy around each other at first, right? Victor, Yuuri assumes, is oblivious to his extensive knowledge of his life, and while that should prompt Yuuri with endless conversation starters he feels… paralyzed. After all, it’s the Victor Nikiforov who is sitting across the table sticking his tongue out as he sketches the pattern of Yuuri’s short program on a sheet of paper. He wants to talk, but it is almost intimidating. And his own skittish behavior doesn’t help him so much when Victor tries, in a rather invasive way at first, to get them acquainted.

Turns out being in silence around Victor is a wonderful way of research. He learns so many things that interviews and videos leave out—like how Victor messes his hair when he is stuck on something, and how he keeps talking to himself under his breath and looks at Yuuri in legit surprise as he is not aware that he keeps talking to himself out loud.

And the more time Yuuri spends with Victor, the closer they grow, and Yuuri learns more things about him. It becomes less about trying to impress each other with who they are and more about building an earnest relationship that mutually helps them grow. The details, habits, are more intimate as Victor opens up, allowing himself to be comfortable around Yuuri and be who he really is.

It is as gratifying as it is funny. Yuuri takes guessing which music Victor’s fingers are drumming on surfaces as his new favorite hobby. He does it a lot—usually when lost in thought, sometimes humming along as if he’s trying to fill in the silence. He also has the habit of sneezing loudly and burping when he thinks he is alone—which is so very unlike the Victor he knows from the magazines, but so honest and real Yuuri finds himself falling in love for this flawed version of Victor over and over.

Things escalate to a new level once they start living together in Russia. There they finally have the whole house to themselves, where they can be comfortable around each other all day, and it provides Yuuri with so much more material for his research on Victor Nikiforov.

The contrast between Victor in public and Victor in private is stark. It is as if when they get home, Victor’s social switch is turned off and he becomes unapologetically himself.

In public, Victor is much more reserved, polite to the extreme and meticulously elegant. It is impossible to catch him off guard on the camera, and he will always be looking his damned best, both as coach and competitor. He is all smiles and pleasantries, being respectful to skaters, journalists, and fans alike.

Public Victor doesn’t pick his nose, sings off-key or plays imaginary drums while waiting for the press to ask questions.

But once they set foot back home it’s a matter of minutes until Yuuri finds him drumming his fingers on the kitchen counter as he tries to recall what he needs to cook dinner. Once they set foot back home, the song-humming starts almost immediately, and Yuuri barely notices himself humming along as they greet Makkachin, doing the backing vocals to the song they had been listening to in the car.

Yuuri barely notices picking up on Victor’s habits at all. It just kind of happens—one morning he vaguely realizes he’s not ashamed of walking nude around the house anymore, and it only hits him when Victor waggles his eyebrow at him—and Yuuri can’t help his surprise when Victor starts singing the song Yuuri had been drumming on the table as he scrolled through his Instagram feed one morning.

For a fleeting moment, Yuuri wonders when he has started picking up on Victor’s habits like that, but that question dissipates as he joins Victor in their terrible, off-key and unapologetic singing that eventually progresses into a dance-off while they get ready for practice. It doesn’t matter, for in that moment yet another fascinating fact about Victor Nikiforov is revealed to him, and his curiosity is provoked again.

Is Victor Nikiforov aware that he knows and executes pop singers’ choreographies flawlessly while dancing around the house?
