Gertrude Ederle, first woman to swim the Channel, 1926, (1935).
Gertrude Caroline Ederle (1905-2003) was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and world record-holder in five events. On August 6, 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Among other nicknames, the press sometimes called her "Queen of the Waves".
"To me, the sea is like a person, like a child that I've known a long time. It sounds crazy, I know, but when I swim in the sea I talk to it. I never feel alone when I'm out there." - Gertrude Ederle

This is how I lived back then– through books. I locked myself into their stories, dreamt of their characters at night, pretended to be them. They were my armour against the hard edges of reality.

Il lui fallait maintenant s'enfoncer dans la mer chaude, se perdre pour se retrouver, nager dans la lune et la tiédeur pour que se taise ce qui en lui restait du passé et que naisse le chant profond de son bonheur.

Countdown to Agatha: Day 753
Agatha: “I’m not going in the water, I can’t swim!”
Y/N: “What do you mean? You’re several centuries old, and you never learned how to swim?”
Agatha: “When people in the 17th century were able to swim, guilt on crimes of witchcraft usually followed!”
Wanda: “…but you actually are a witch”
Agatha: “That’s beside the point! I was trying to avoid being hung or burned!”
