You Don't Need an Agent! Publishers That Accept Unsolicited Submissions
I see a few people sayin that you definitely need an agent to get published traditionally. Guess what? That's not remotely true. While an agent can be a very useful tool in finding and negotiating with publishers, going without is not as large of a hurdle as people might make it out to be!
Below is a list of some of the traditional publishers that offer reading periods for agent-less manuscripts. There might be more! Try looking for yourself - I promise it's not that scary!
Albert Whitman & Company: for picture books, middle-grade, and young adult fiction
Hydra (Part of Random House): for mainly LitRPG
Kensington Publishing: for a range of fiction and nonfiction
NCM Publishing: for all genres of fiction (YA included) and nonfiction
Pants of Fire Press: for middle-grade, YA, and adult fiction
Tin House Books: very limited submission period, but a good avenue for fiction, literary fiction, and poetry written by underrepresented communities
Quirk Fiction: offers odd-genre rep for represented and unagented authors. Unsolicited submissions inbox is closed at the moment but this is the page that'll update when it's open, and they produced some pretty big books so I'd keep an eye on this
Persea Books: for lit fiction, creative nonfiction, YA novels, and books focusing on contemporary issues
Baen: considered one of the best known publishers of sci-fi and fantasy. They don't need a history of publication.
Chicago Review Press: only accepting nonfiction at the moment, but maybe someone here writes nonfiction
Acre: for poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Special interest in underrepresented authors. Submission period just passed but for next year!
Coffeehouse Press: for lit fiction, nonfiction, poetry and translation. Reading period closed at time of posting, but keep an eye out
Ig: for queries on literary fiction and political/cultural nonfiction
Schaffner Press: for lit fiction, historical/crime fiction, or short fiction collections (cool)
Feminist Press: for international lit, hybrid memoirs, sci-fi and fantasy fiction especially from BIPOC, queer and trans voices
Evernight Publishing: for erotica. Royalties seem good and their response time is solid
Felony & Mayhem: for literary mystery fiction. Not currently looking for new work, but check back later
This is all what I could find in an hour. And it's not even everything, because I sifted out the expired links, the repeat genres (there are a lot of options for YA and children's authors), and I didn't even include a majority of smaller indie pubs where you can really do that weird shit.
A lot of them want you to query, but that's easy stuff once you figure it out. Lots of guides, and some even say how they want you to do it for them.
Not submitting to a Big 5 Trad Pub House does not make you any less of a writer. If you choose to work with any publishing house it can take a fair bit of weight off your shoulders in terms of design and distribution. You don't have to do it - I'm not - but if that's the way you want to go it's very, very, very possible.
Have a weirder manuscript that you don't think fits? Here's a list of 50 Indie Publishers looking for more experimental works to showcase and sell!
If Random House won't take your work - guess what? Maybe you're too cool for Random House.

I just saw someone on tumblr ranting about Writing In First Person as though it were a cardinal crime against literature.
They spoke of it as though it were an art form recently invented by YA authors, who spoke exclusively through Mary Sues, without any sort of interest in mimicking Real Literature.
To those people who disparage the first person, and who may think, in addition, that long sentences with commas are a crime, I submit the following excerpt:
From “The Sun Also Rises”, by Ernest Hemingway
Tumblr media
I myself have not read much Hemingway, because I focused on European Literature in college, and can’t actually remember ever reading any of his stuff in school. I’ve lately been in the mood, however, to dig into modern English literature, and imagine my surprise when I found this. A first person story. Written in a combination of short dialogue bursts and longer description.
Anyway — I figured I’d share that little bit of insight, in case there’s anyone else out there who didn’t know, like me. ;)

Rest in peace Brian Jacques... This is the master storyteller who made my childhood more magical and adventurous with his Redwall book series. The characters were great role models in many ways and his tales worked in many important moral messages about friendship, selflessness, and standing up to injustice. He’s still a considerable influence on my creative writing to this day.

I lived through the trend of YA authors killing off their main female character in the last book. Nothing can hurt me anymore.

I finally got to hold an early copy of my book!
I set out to get published as a teen. It only took me nearly twenty years and six books before I got a book deal. It wasn't easy. I got many rejections.
But my journey humbled me and made me a better writer. It made me so hungry for it that it was all I could think about.
I told myself I would get published even if it took my whole life to accomplish it.

Yesterday, I learned my "online presence" is preventing certain conservative librarians from carrying my books on their shelves.
Because of course it is ...
In any case IF YOU LIKE YA AND OUTSPOKEN AUTHORS WHO BELIEVE IN HUMAN RIGHTS, come say hi? I write YA Fantasy books about maps and pirates and the magic in the wind ...

|- story of the stars -|
an extended epilogue to an upcoming novel…
⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚🐇˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚🔮˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆ ⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚🐍˚୨୧⋆。˚ ⋆
There was nothing that could be done. It seemed utterly impossible for the squabble in the sky to ever come to a finish.
For decades, the Sun and the Moon bickered over who held the higher power and authority within their shared galaxy. Their powers seemed far too different to work together in peace and unity. The two grew angrier with one another each passing day, as the battle for the spotlight continued. Eventually, their feuds led to our world’s ruin.
Allowing their responsibilities to slip away from them in hatred and clouded judgement, the universe crumbled in fire and destruction, leaving the Sun and Moon with nothing left except themselves. In sad desperation, the Sun and the Moon turned to the Stars for help. The Stars remained compassionate and agreed to create a new enchanted world for them to care for, on one condition: They must agree to set aside their differences and arrogance in order to work together in harmony.
Promptly learning from their foolish mistakes, the Moon and the Sun agreed to treat each other with kindness. The Stars then combined their powers with the Sun and the Moon to birth a new enchanted universe of divine and diverse magic. Under the protection of the Sun, Moon and Stars, the enchanted world became a loving home to all humans, beasts and mutants alike. Though of course, where life lives, destruction hides.
When traveling this vast universe, you will discover it to be a home to four different breeds of people: Sorcerers, Fire Breathers, Pixies, and Vampires. As a gift from the Stars, every creature born within the magical world is born with a supernatural ability. Despite your origin or family, you are gifted your powers arbitrarily. You will find yourself curious as to what powers these mythical individuals hold, but allow me to give you a closer look at their different varieties.
Much like you and me, Sorcerers possess natural human features and fierce mentality. They are never afraid to push their magical limits with charms and potions and needless to say, never to be poorly agitated on a bad day. On my journey, I made a dear friend out of a kind Sorcerer by the name of Tobias Varon. His supernatural ability allowed him to create force fields to provide both him and I protection from harm. Even though I always saw Tobias to be a strong warrior, I often found myself taking time out of my day to aid his hands whenever he held his wondrous shields for too long.
Though Fire Breathers will look much like your average human being, a closer look will quickly show you that they are actually Chimera mutants. (note: for those of you who are new to our enchanted land, Chimeras are animal-human hybrids. Though don’t be fooled… Many Fire Breathers are still quite animalistic.) Living up to their name, these hybrid humans have the ability to breath fire, much like the various dragons that also live freely within this universe. After my encounter with Tobias, I later met Frida Lepus, a young Fire Breather girl who’s beautifully mutated with a white rabbit. Atop her white hair sprouted two fluffy bunny ears that would twitch every time she became too nervous. While spending time with Frida, I made a great discovery about Fire Breathers: their favorite snack is live snails.
With congested forests and boundless oceans, it’s quite easy to get lost within this mythical world. Though I can assure you, you will never feel more at home than in the presence of a Pixie. The colorful fairies possess beautiful wings, not only giving them the ability to fly, but also the ability to heal themselves and others. After finding myself in a tussle with an unfriendly Fire Breather, I met a stranger within a willow tree far larger than the average. This new pixie by the name of Jasper Gastrell, offered me his healing magic when he found my arm covered in fresh burns. Softly placing his warm hand upon my stinging wound, a soft glow emitted from his fingers while his large fairy wings gleamed with a gentle sparkle. I couldn’t contain my smile when I found my arm painless and without a scratch, except for a tiny, pink heart newly tattooed onto my bicep.
Similar to our friends, the Fire Breathers, Vampires seem like normal Sorcerers to the naked eye. Though with a closer look, their sharp eyes and teeth make them quite distinguishable. Now there’s no need to fear; as long as you remember the rule of keeping dead mice or snakes on you when wandering these enchanted forests, Vampires will almost always restrain from draining you of your blood. (That is unless you meet a particularly starved one on a bad day. Then small creatures simply won’t satisfy their hunger. In that case, hone in closely to your fight or flight response.) My first encounter with a vampire was when I had stumbled upon them feasting on a baby pegasus. I would normally be terrorized by the sight, but I quickly had to remind myself that it could have very well been me in place of the young pony. Once her piercingly purple eyes met mine, I hastily apologized for interrupting. The Vampire, Octavia Doyle, simply flashed me a bloody smile and offered me a piece of her meal. Pretty soon, I found out that pegasus feathers are actually sweeter than I had imagined.

As you continue your mystical journey throughout this little world of ours, I advise you to keep your eyes open and your mind sharp. For not everything you will find is actually as it seems…
