Mahmal - The curtain of the Holy Ka'ba Series : Egypt & Islam The Mahmal is best known for containing the Kiswa, the fabric covering of the Kaaba, Islam's holliest shrine, woven in Egypt from the 13th century untill 1962, and replaced annually! Traditionally this was taken along with the camel caravan on Hajj on the way to Mecca. When it cross the desert, there was this amazing bright red silk object just acting as a beacon for all the pilgrims following behind.
