Hey - what about [historical figure]? How could you forget [historical figure]? This is erasure!

We didn't forget, we promise - this is the first of several installments of this project. After the absolute stress of the last Kickstarter when we had 300+ different SKUs by the end of the project, we decided to take a more focused approach to Historically Queer. We attempted to provide a good cross-section of identities, and will continue to expand in future projects. Spider has a huge folder on his computer full of planned pins and reference images.

But historically...

Yes, we know that it isn't totally proper to use today's terms to discuss people who lived a long time ago. But also, how else do we talk about our community history in a way that's understood, and celebrate our shared queerness, other than to use the words and iconography which are understandable to us now? We celebrate our shared history with the words and understandings most accessible to all of us, and we hope that by providing not just the pins but a few elementary facts about these historical figures, we'll encourage people to read more about them in their original context.

The Bond Between a Dragon

Pairing: Katie Torres x CC Walker

Content: Fluff, getting together

Summary: Katie has a crush on CC. That's when she finds a way to start a conversation...

It was science class and Katie was excited. She loves science after all, it is one of her favourite subjects. No one knew she was a science nerd, however, knowing she would be bullied for it like she was with owning rats and being able to knit. She also had another reason to be excited about science class… she managed to sit next to CC, her crush.

She had a crush on CC for years and it was still there. She knew she would crush on her for years. Speaking of the devil, CC just walked in with a pair of shorts on and her blue hoodie as well as her blue beanie. She wasn’t late as per usual, she didn’t want to mess up with her attendance. “Hey,” CC greeted Katie before she sat down.

“Hi,” Katie responded, blushing lightly. They also greeted each other in every science class. This time would be different Katie concluded though. She would speak with her more.

She admired the taller girl next to her before she saw something she could start a conversation about. “Nice tattoo,” Katie spoke. CC looked at her and then down before she saw how her shirt was riding up and her dragon tattoo was sticking out with an obvious lesbian flag on it. “Thanks,” she spoke as she knew Katie was already bisexual due to her being outed 2 years ago but she took it in stride. She, however, wasn’t out to anyone but her football team who didn’t snitch luckily. Katie nodded and smiled. “My friend helped do it,” CC added as she was looking at the smaller girl, deciding to make conversation as the teacher wasn’t in the classroom yet.

“That’s nice! I always wished I could get a tattoo but my mom would freak,” Katie admitted. “What would you want? And true. My mom freaked but she doesn’t mind anymore,” CC asked intrigued and added how her mom reacted too.

“I would get a rat tattoo I think,” Katie admitted and CC couldn’t help. “Where would you get it?” she asked, looking her up and down and bit her lip discreetly. “My forearm,” Katie spoke. CC nodded.

“If you want, I can get my friend to do it for you?” CC offered. Katie widened her eyes and nodded. “Yes please,” Katie spoke. CC nodded.

“I’ll sort that out for you. Just give me word when you want it,” CC confirmed before looking forward and friending Katie on Instagram discreetly. The teacher just entered the classroom after all. Katie meanwhile was excited that she was being followed by CC and would help her get a tattoo.

It had been 2 weeks after that talk and Katie and CC were talking more. CC walked to Katie’s house and picked her up, walking her to school every day too. Katie was falling faster for the girl day by day and her parents could tell. They honestly knew about it from the start as Katie had immediately told her parents how she thought she was bisexual and they were supportive of her. They just wished that Katie would be happy with CC. Little did she know that CC crushed on her too.

In fact, CC’s parents had been watching her for weeks too and even took note of what horror movies she was watching. “Hey. Nightmare on Elm Street 2 is heavily queer coded right?” Jess asked her when both of them were alone. CC immediately knew what her mom was getting at but tried to deflect the blame. “I don’t know what you mean,” CC spoke, trying to act casual however it didn’t come out like that. Jess heard the panic. “You do… I know you do. It’s ok if you are gay honey, I don’t mind. We love you no matter what,” Jess reassured. CC couldn’t help it but she got tears in her eyes before she hugged her mom. Jess just smiled and kissed her forehead. “Now… tell me about this girl.” CC just laughed and then talked about Katie, about how amazing she was and how she wanted to see her out of school and hang out like normal teenagers.

The next day was a Saturday so Katie wasn’t expecting someone at her house for her. That was at least until noon and there was a knock on the door. “I got it!” Katie called out before she opened the door. She was wearing a flannel with ripped jeans. There was also a shirt under the flannel with a picture of Spider-Man on it. “Hey,” CC spoke casually, wearing a pair of shorts and a football shirt.

“Hi,” Katie asked, her eyes wide. “I was wondering if you wanted to hang out. I heard you have rats,” she spoke with a grin. Katie nodded happily. “Yeah! You wanna go up to my room?” Katie asked and CC nodded, walking in and smiling as she took off her trainers before following Katie.

This led to her mom and dad seeing CC and Katie together, both smiling at each other. They were sure the feelings were requited.

This also led to the daily schedule of CC going over every Saturday playing with the rats and just talking or watching films. She even got Katie into football which she was proud of. They had a few rounds now and then and Katie was improving every time. CC was proud of her.

They were currently in the living room where CC and Katie were cuddled up together like usual, watching a kid's movie. They were watching ‘Encanto’ and Katie seemed to love the film. CC was holding her as she smiled, then instinctively kissed her forehead. Katie froze before she turned around and was bright red. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to,” CC immediately apologised.

“Do you… like me like that?” she asked, wanting an honest answer. CC meanwhile was panicking inside and was nodding.

“Yes, yes I do,” CC responded. Katie smiled before she kissed her and held her hand. “I reciprocate your feelings,” Katie said. CC grinned and smiled, before kissing her harder, soon returning to watch the film.

They had been together for 2 weeks and CC and Katie finally had matching tattoos. They were on the back, and it was a rat with a football as its head. It combined their 2 interests after all. They now had a photo and were prepared to share it online. Their backs were facing the camera, showing them and Katie and her held hands while they were kissing too. They were just thankful for the football team helping to take the photos and angle them perfectly before they hit upload on sharing the photos.

They sent a smile to each other, kissing each other again before they started to walk to classes, ignoring the whispers and murmurs.

Eddie and Steve were in the kitchen, chatting, when Robin came into the room. She was breathing heavily, and her lipstick was smeared. It was her first sort of date with Vickie. Of course, Robin had been nervous, and she enlisted Steve’s help. A little group hangout was his idea to make them both comfortable, letting Robin give him a signal to move into the kitchen whenever she wanted to be alone with Vickie. Eddie was with him as per usual. It had been the norm for them ever since Steve carried him out of the Upside Down.

"You were right about Vickie," Robin said.

"Duh, of course, I was right about Vickie. As someone who also likes both, I have a sense for these kinds of things," Steve said. "Wait. Did she kiss you, and did you just leave her in there?"

"Shit!" Robin exclaimed and ran back into the living room.

"So, you're bisexual?" Eddie asked.

"Yeah," Steve said, shrugging as he popped a chip into his mouth.

"Have you always known that you liked both?" Eddie asked.

"Pretty much. Definitely from a young age. Right around the same time, everyone discovered kissing. It didn't matter who I kissed. I liked kissing," Steve said. "And then when I was old enough to start having sex. . . Well, you get the idea."

"Uh, it wasn't until recently that I learned that that's me too," Eddie said, scratching. "Bisexual, that is."

"Oh, so, you haven't always known? I figured with the hanky that you would have known," Steve said. "I guess that makes sense, though. Of course, you wouldn't be flagging on school grounds or 24/7."

"What the hell is flagging?" Eddie asked.

"I'll tell you when you're older," Steve grinned, and Eddie shoved him. "So, can I ask. . .what made you realize that you also liked guys?"

Eddie groaned and rubbed his face with his hands, scratching furiously in his hair.

"Ugh, it was actually you, man. You on that boat at Lover's Lake, whipping that sweater off like it was no big deal and then throwing it at me. It threw me off. I needed a damn cigarette," Eddie said as he hid his face.

Steve pulled one of his hands from his face, clasping it tightly in his own. He grabbed Eddie's chin and turned his face towards him.

"Thank you for telling me. It must have sucked. Learning about the Upside Down, being wanted for murder, and on top of that having a sexuality crisis," Steve said.

"It wasn't so bad," Eddie said softly.

Steve's hand was still on his face, but he was cupping his cheek now, rubbing his thumb across Eddie's cheekbone. Eddie sighed, leaning into his touch.

"Eddie, can I kiss you?" Steve asked.

"Y-yeah."

Steve leaned in and kissed him. It was soft and gentle, also a little bit wet. They sighed against each other's lips. It was a bit overwhelming for Eddie but in a good way. He could feel the tears prickling at his eyes. Steve broke the kiss.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Steve asked.

"It's nothing. I just can't believe that you like me," Eddie said.

Steve pressed a hard kiss to his cheek.

"Of course, I like you," Steve said.

Eddie sighed and hugged him tightly, burrowing his face into Steve’s neck.

"I like you too, Steve," Eddie said.

"Yes, my plan worked!" Robin exclaimed.

Steve and Eddie broke apart, giving her looks of disbelief. She was standing in the doorway, holding Vickie's hand.

"You planned on being a useless, clueless lesbian?" Steve asked.

"Okay, rude! Yes, I did. I got you guys to double date with me and Vickie so that way you two can finally admit your feelings for one another!" Robin exclaimed.

"You didn't plan shit, Buckley," Eddie said.

"Steve, who are you going to believe? Me or your boyfriend?" Robin asked.

"Yeah, I'm not choosing either one of you. Vickie, how are you? We've never hung out. Do you want to go into the living room and talk shit about our new partners?" Steve asked, and Vickie giggled.

How do you think the queer batkids would come out to Bruce and the other kids/siblings?

Thank you so much for the question. It has had me laughing for a couple of hours just because I'm picturing it. It is chaotic, to say the least. However let me break it down by each individual.

First off, I don't believe it would ever be an issue telling their siblings. I fully believe the bat siblings are ride or die. Even the ones that have tried to kill each other. So I think that telling their siblings would be very casual. I feel like the big person to tell would be Alfred and Bruce. Bruce, more so than Alfred. With that said, the kids!

Dick: I like starting with Dick. He is the oldest, and I think that's always a good place to start. Now, I fully believe he would have no reason to come out. Not to be stereotypical, but we've all seen The Discowling. No straight man would ever wear something so fabulous. Therefore, I feel like Dick would get a lot of blasé responses. There would be a lot of "yes and"" and "I already knew that." Which I think is hilarious because I feel like he would pout. However, thankfully, that would kind of set the tone for everyone else.

Cass: Cass is the favorite daughter, so I don't think there would ever be an issue with her coming out to Bruce. If she even so much felt like she couldn't, Bruce would just destroy himself. He would be so upset that he did something that cause his daughter not to trust him. On the off chance that didn't happen, she would just come out by bringing home a girlfriend. What are they going to do? They can't fight her.

Jason: Jason wouldn't. Let me explain as an adult, Jason Todd doesn't see the need to bend to anyone. This includes a matter of his relationships. I love Jason and his siblings, but if one of them said I have a problem with you being queer he would probably just call them stupid and walk away. I don't think they ever would have a problem with it, though. So if anyone did find out, it certainly wouldn't be through Jason. Also, I feel like Jason would consider it a fun surprise to pay back Bruce. He would tell Alfred, though, because Alfred is his favorite.

Tim: I fully want to believe that Tim would either do the least or the most. Like he would either tell somebody just randomly out of the blue. It would sound more like he was asking them to go to the store, then he was telling them that he was bi. On the other end, I could see him rigging up the bat computer to display the bisexual flag and just waiting for someone to find it. It would also have his initials right in the center.

Steph: Since she's technically not Bruce's kid, she would see no reason to come out to him. Therefore, I think she would only come out when Cass brought her home as a girlfriend. Bruce would probably ask her why she didn't tell him. To what she would respond, "You're not my real dad."

Damian: I don't think Damian would to most of his siblings. He would tell Dick but it would be in a very formal way. I can just picture him sitting Grayson down and presenting a PowerPoint to explain how he is not straight. As for Bruce, he would probably just drop the news when he couldn't be around to attend a gala because he had a date. I fully believe it would also be very matter of fact. Probably something like "Father, I apologize. I cannot attend the gala for I have previous arrangements with *insert male person here*" Bruce would reply, saying he was happy that Damian felt comfortable enough to tell him. To which Damian would find confusing because how is he going on a date, brave?

Duke: I don't believe that Duke is actually queer. I firmly believe he is on the category of straight person who's on thin ice of the group. However if he was clear and he had to come out I feel like he would overthink it. Like he would want to invite the person he was with to dinner and make it a big spectacle. He would probably stand up against Bruce and tell him that he doesn't care what Bruce thinks and that he is *insert sexuality here*. To which Bruce would reply by thanking him and asking him if he would like a dinner roll.

I kind of wanted to include Harper and Cullen. However, I don't think that either of them would be a surprise. We know Cullen is already LGBT in the comics. So it wouldn't be too big of a deal if Harper was as well. They would probably be the ones that everyone either already knew or guessed. Also, Barbara isn't someone who needs to come out. People come out to her instead. If she did choose to date a woman, no one would say anything because she has all their dirt.

Edit: I found out that Harper is canonly bisexual. So I stand by what I said it would not be a big deal. She's also strikes me as one of those ones who wouldn't feel the need to tell anybody. Her brother wouldn't care, and I doubt anyone else who cares about her would care that she was bi either.

Someone also added the tags that Duke would be kind of that person who's just like go to the flow with his sexuality. Someone who likes who he likes and doesn't fret about the label. I am 100% on board with that.

His only struggle would be introducing the person he likes to his family because they're insane.

Hob got really into the queer liberation movement and has gone on to be the resident bisexual professor that all the students know is a safe person to go to and helps out with the LGBT clubs on campus.

He gets really excited to share this with Dream, who is a little confused about why it's so important (having missed much of the fight) but immediately takes interest because omg Hob is into more than ladies??

Hob hosts the club at the New Inn and Dream shows up and all the students just Know by the way those two look at each other and spend the night trying to get them to admit it to each other.

Look. LOOK. I'M. I'm very NORMAL ABOUT THIS. Did you know the bi flag was unveiled in December 5th of 1988? Did you know HOB DIDN'T MEET DREAM IN JULY 7TH OF 1989 ANYWAY HAVE A FIC

Dream doesn't get it at first. He never really did get it, but only attributed it to the need humanity had for labels, for packing things into boxes and saying this goes here and that goes there. Sometimes, it led to this goes to heaven and you go to hell. It seemed to be a very common one, too. He was beyond that; his name said it all, Dream was endless. Not he nor she, not man nor creature, he was all there was to be and the nothingness beyond it. Gender and sexuality need not apply.

Still, it meant so much to Hob, that he'd have dreams about it. Nightmares too, for nights on end, and even if Dream begged Hob to allow him to take them away, Hob always declined, always braved through them. "If you take them, I'll forget how much it all means. I'll forget why I'm still fighting."

They sat at the New Inn one afternoon, while Hob graded papers and Dream had a cup of chamomile tea, but his eyes couldn't help but focus on a shiny pin on Hob's jumper shaped like a flag, the shades of pink, purple and blue a spot of proud colour in Hob's otherwise earthy colour palette.

"It's the bisexual pride flag."

"Hm?" Dream's eyes dart up to meet Hob's, tilting his head slightly. He wasn't sure if he should feel bad for being caught, because he wasn't sure what he was looking at in the first place.

"The pin. I wear it for my students, but also for myself. The kids feel safer I guess, knowing they have at least one of their own in the faculty. Can't say it doesn't make me feel good too."

Hob has a particular tone to his voice that makes Dream's heart sing in tune to its melody. It's a fuller sense of self, maybe more than Dream ever had in regards to his own identity. "...one of their own?"

"Oh, I– Sorry, those are pretty recent." Hob straightened himself up (ha) on the chair, his lecturing posture taking over. Dream liked when he did that. He liked to hear Hob speak of things he had deep knowledge of and passion for. "This one was created in 1988 by a queer activist called Michael Page. Had the pleasure of being there when it was first unveiled, but clearly it took a long time until I was able to wear something like this out in public and not be decked by some bloody homophobe."

It was starting to sink in.

"...I'm afraid I was not present for these developments." Dream saw the look on Hob's face, like he was ready to apologise. He raised a had to stop him, waving his concern away. "As far as I can remember, queer was not a form of self identification, but only a way to shun out those outside the established norm."

"Ah, yes. We reclaimed it, though. Or are reclaiming it. The 80s were crazy. All of them were, for me." Hob smiled at Dream, at their shared secret and at their years of now reestablished friendship.

"I think you're lonely."

Could it have been....? Could he have meant...?

"What does it mean for you, then?" Dream asks in a way he hopes sounds inconspicuous, pointing at the pin. He was hesitant to ask, afraid to be getting it all wrong.

"For me? It means I love whoever I love. Man, woman, either or neither."

The pride coming from Hob's words filled Dream with hope, something he had not felt in a long, long time. The look in his face then shifted onto something else, something he didn't quite understand. "...what about you? That is, if you're okay with talking about that. I don't want to overstep. Last thing I want is for you to walk out–"

"I won't, Hob." Dream knew Hob had reason for feeling that way. "I don't believe the terminology you have could define my experience. I have laid with mortals and gods alike, and have wore many faces and names. It is beyond human comprehension."

Hob seems takes a moment to think about what he'd just heard. Dream feels like he might have thrown too much at his human friend. "...I think I get it. But, and tell me to bugger off I'm wrong, do you prefer to be a particular way? To be with a particular sort of being?"

Dream. Didn't have an answer.

He never thought of what he preferred. He'd never felt in need of any sort of outside validation, but. That was a lie. He needed it. He just never cared to look for it.

Hob's smile was what broke him out of the spell of his own self doubt. "It's okay if you don't have an answer, you know. It takes people a loooong time to get it, it took me nearly 600 years, you know? Ah! You know what? I've got an idea–" He reached inside his brown messenger bag, pulling out a colourful piece of paper, handing it over to Dream. A pamphlet for a meeting. "We're having a meeting for the uni's LGBT clubs here at the Inn. I want this to be a safe space for the kids, and to get them to connect with other folks in the community, share their experiences. It's tomorrow, and I'd love it if you could make it. I'm sure they would too."

Dream took the pamphlet in hands, looking at the bright colours and bold fonts, taking in every bit of information Hob was giving him and trying to fill in the gaps of the questions he wouldn't dare ask. After a moment, he looked up at Hob, allowing himself a small smile. "I shall be in attendance, then."

honestly I'm fine with bi lucifer or token straight lucifer both work for me but I was speaking in terms of canon sexualities in my post (because if it wasn't just canon there would probably be more bisexuals LMAO. and rosie would be with alastor in the aroace section)

Warnings: homophobic and transphobic parents

Okay, hear me out. I drew my flags okay?

I couldn't buy lgbt+ flags because my parents are homophobic and transphobic (i still live with them) so i decided to draw my flags. And i put them in my closet. Yes, inside my closet! Look at this:

(this isn't the best try and the colours aren't the best either but that's all i had for now)

And my mother opened my closet because... I don't even know why! And she saw the flags. (I told her that the first and the third flag are both bisexual flags because I don't want more drama in my life, neither i want to give more explanations. Sadly, i couldn't lie about the trans flag because she already knows how it looks). And after she saw the flags she was like:

"Take them off of the closet because i don't want anyone to see them!"

What a stupid way of saying "I don't want to see them" 🙄

Like, who's gonna open my damn closet except me?? (And you for some reason).

And then she said: "Your teacher might see them!"

I didn't make this post just to share this specific event and just to calm down my nerves. It's not about the flags in my closet. It's much more than that.

Since i came out to my parents, everyday something is happening that just makes me angry or sad again. The day goes perfectly fine until "my mum opens my closet out of nowhere" and here we go again. More drama, more anxiety, more anger and more tears. Can't we have some peace?! It's not like I'm bothering you or something! So why do you always bring this up and bother me? Can't we let some days pass without trouble? Do we always have to say the same things over and over again? Do we always have to fight?

I mean, be patient! It's one fucking year! I'll have my own house the next year so just be patient until then! That's what i also do. I'm patient.

I'm in a state where I can't do anything about transitioning. I can't even buy a hoodie from the male section because they say "that's the male section, you are a girl" and stuff like that, even if it's just a single colour hoodie! (Let's be honest, the only difference is the sizes. Single colour simple-classic hoodies are always the same).

I don't say my opinion about transsexuality or bisexuality (or about anything LGBT+ related) because i already know their reaction. I don't express my thoughts or opinions, I don't ask my questions and i don't discuss my troubles. Although i want to do it!

I'm patient... But they aren't.

And i know it might be hard for them, i understand that. I'm willing to give them time to think about it and to search and to learn and to understand me better and to have as many calm discussions as they want. The problem is that they are wasting this time. They do none of those things. They just complain. Can't they just be patient for another year? It's not much if you think about it.

Anyway, if i say everything that I want to say now about me and my parents and my experience, this post is never going to end.

So let's get in the important part:

I wish you all good luck with the "come out to parents" thing. I wish you to have lots of patience (you might need it). I wish you to be happy and healthy, always. Be strong. And... Yeah... It might go well but if it doesn't just remember that you are not alone. Be positive and know that better things are about to come in the future... So... Enough discourse, I wanna post about headcanons

The Vees are a polycule to me, but in a way that I can't even explain without an entire slowburn fanfic (stay tuned. I'm a slow writer). But I will try.

Velvette:

I do adhere to the lesbian Velvette headcanon. She's dating Vox and still occasionally joins Valentino for a threesome with him. When she first joined the Vees, Velvette used to identify as bisexual (and still loves the bi flag colors the most) and all three of them used to date, before Velvette realized that she's a lesbian.

She and Vox are still dating, and they have an open relationship.

Vox:

Vox's response to Velvette coming out was, "So you're breaking up with Val?" Yes, his pronouns are he/him. No, he's not a man. He'd long shed the fleshy confines of humanity and gender along with it.

Vox is aspec, agender, autistic. To me. He's sex favorable of the 'I want to do it for my partner's enjoyment' flavor. Watching from cameras brings him just as much enjoyment, and he watches everything and everyone, living vicariously, a voyer through the screen. As a result of that, he's so so touched starved, but his sense of feeling is muted (the consequences of betraying flesh in favor of the machine). Soft touches to his synthetic skin don't really register, his sense of feeling restricted to mostly pressure and pain, so he's become a bit of a masochist in response because that's something physical.

Valentino:

He just likes sex. He chases pleasure in any form he can find, dopamine rushes from numerous drugs, orgasmic release, the rush of power from crushing someone underfoot. Anything and everything, he'll try it all. And none of it is really enough, so he'll never stop chasing more.

Valentino doesn't consider his relationship with Vox romantic, even if Vox totally does. They're friends, sure, business partners, absolutely, and fuckbuddies wherever Val is in the mood for it. But romance isn't Val's thing. That's hard work, and Val saves romancing for potential new hires he wants to sign a contract with. What Vox and he have is also written down on a contract, joining their businesses together too closely to be parted without blood, but it's not the same. Not to Val. So, he wouldn't call Vox his boyfriend, but he also wouldn't correct anyone who said they were. Vox is someone he can let his guard down with, one of the few people who would never want to get out of the contract their names are signed on. They work well together. That's better than any romance you can get in Hell, Val thinks.

Val and Velvette are catty besties. Pan/Lesbian solidarity and hostility all in one.

Bones, are there any Bisexual character in your AU? I myself, am a proud bisexual who NEEDS MORE BISEXUAL CHARACTERS IN MEDIA! I headcannon Bluestar as being bi and Leafpool as well! Mothwing is DEFINITELY a Lesbian!! MOTHPOOL FOREVER! HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!!!!!!!!🌈

I approach bisexuality as a default! Cats who lean towards certain genders are the exception, not the rule. I just write it being totally standard to feel attraction to whoever.

So I try to make an effort to show it in the story, by having cats visibly display it. I crave media that has bisexual people who act on that attraction as more than offhanded background lines, if that makes sense

Characters who are shown being bisexual;

Ivypool. Dates Blossomfall, has a pretty massive breakup, marries the ex-kittypet Fernsong.

Dovewing. Dates Bumblestripe, ends up with tiny wife Heartstar.

Brushblaze. Joined WindClan over how smitten he was with Onewhisker; eventually ended up with his Honor Dam Whitetail, and fathered Heathertail's half-siblings, Galerunner and Smokehaze.

Onewhisker. The iconic bisexual disaster. Of course. Brushblaze, Firestar, Smoke, Whitetail... they were all items at one point.

On that note, Firestar is aromantic but not ace.

Harestar, Breezepelt, Heathertail. They're married together.

Violetshine, Tree, Dragonfly. Also married to each other.

Leafstar. Husband Billystorm, girlfriend Echosong.

Bramblestar. Yes. The worst person you know is bi. He was in love with Stormfur during the journey and I do imagine he has at least a little bit of a thing for Spiderleg after he retires.

Squirrelflight also, though. Likewise I imagine she feels something for Daisy, but always has other things on her mind. I ideate about them ending up together in a peaceful moment after TBC and quietly being together in the latest arc

Also Nightmare Exes being contrasted with Dream Exes is VERY funny to me

Reedwhisker is still pining for Hawkfrost, but he did happily sire Duskfur's kits for her and took care of her. I think he would have been able to love her more fully if he wasn't constantly missing Hawk, he's had a lot of grief in his life.

Crowfeather made Leafpool feel loved and important for a while, and she thought he was hot, but god she regretted it after a few weeks and doesn't know what she saw in him

Bluestar had a LOT going on, but I wax poetic about her too much. She's a whole rainbow. This girl's pride flag is shrimp colors.

And this is all in addition to cats who casually talk about how attractive other cats are, how they'd consider relationships with them, but end up with one permanent romance.

So yeah there's a lot of bi cats, listing them is moot because if I don't explicitly state they heavily skew to one gender (Hollyleaf for example), I am writing them as bi-default.

Personal DnDads Pride Headcanons

some of these are simple but most are paragraphs long because of who I am as a person (incapable of saying things concisely), so they're going under a readmore. vaguely organized by age group.

one quick note: feel free to cheer on or rag on any of these that you please, variety in opinion is the spice of fandom life! everyone's headcanons are so real and valid to me, i am a strong believer in having as many contradicting fandom opinions as you want. for this list, i just went with everything that is "default" to my fan content. others' transfem sparrow is shaking hands with my gnc sparrow and yes, i'm listing that one on purpose, because if you make fun of transfem sparrow, you are getting hit by my bat. be fucking nice.

Season 1 Dads and Spouses

Carol is a lesbian. This is simply canon to me. It’s important that this is first and visible to everyone.

Bi/pan polyamorous Henry and Mercedes is also simply canon to me. Honestly that one might be fully canon based on some of the things that happen in Odyssey

Henry is unlabeled but in the sense that he calls himself ‘queer’, ‘bisexual’, ‘gay’, or ‘pansexual’, fully depending on his mood and the conversation happening

Ron is also unlabeled but in the sense that he has never thought about it in his life and isn’t intending to now

Glenn is bisexual but never talks about it unless someone else mentions it first, and he tries really really hard to never think about his gender once in his life. The queer angst I give Glenn could be a whole post of its own but just know he has issues. He does fuck men though

Darryl still isn’t really sure on his sexuality and probably never will be, but he’s actually explored it a bit, so that’s better than whatever the fuck was going on with him before the show started. Henry likes giving him subtle bear pride flag accessories because Darryl actually wears them a lot. His favorite color is brown, after all.

Jodie, Nicky, and Taylor all are bisexual with a preference for women. Sexuality isn’t genetic but it is for them specifically.

Morgan is also bisexual. Literally none of the season 1 parents are straight except maybe Samantha and even with her, my opinion fully matters on the day and how I’m feeling.

Henry and Lark have definitely had an exchange at some point where Lark asked him how it was to ‘experience twink death’, to which Henry just went ‘get back to me in a few years on that, kid.’ and Lark spent the rest of the week furiously moping because clearly, he’s a twunk, Father- (words of a man who did not take care of himself well enough from the ages of 18-25 to ever be a twunk)

This is my little shipper brain but Jodie only realized he liked men after being stuffed into the Odyssey and being around Ron 24/7 for months on end (and the demon stuff, but he didn’t know that yet for obvious reasons). In his timeline, he had a whole arc about it and now he’s persistently attracted to strange men who don’t make sense as well as women light-years out of his league. He’s still a little miffed that Henry doesn’t remember the very long conversations they had about it, but him and Nicky get to wear matching bi pride bracelets now, so he guesses it’s fine.

Kiddads and Spouses

Lark is bisexual. He has known this since kindergarten when his parents explained what the flag all over their house was and has never thought about it since.

Lark also helped Rebecca realize she was bisexual because she would ask him about it in a class they shared in high school

This is utterly unrelated to LGBT headcanons but I think Veronica and Rebecca grew up in San Dimas with the kiddads, and were friends with them in high school. It just makes sense to me

Unlabeled Terry Junior is something that can be so personal to me. In a general sense, he likes everyone romantically, and identifies enough with the asexual spectrum to wear an ace ring, but he doesn’t really see the point in putting a name on it. He’s just Terry Junior and he’s happy with that.

Him, Lark, and Nicky did have a group chat called ‘bisexuals with an agenda’ in high school though, where they would make plans for pranking or otherwise harassing their fathers during group outings. Terry loves Ron but that does not mean he is above ruining his day. It’s done with affection.

My thoughts on Sparrow could be a full fanfiction but gonna try to keep it simple (retroactive edit: did not keep it simple). Sparrow is the token cishet of the kiddads, but in the queerest way possible. He’s an Oak-Garcia, of course he’s explored himself very thoroughly. At current, he identifies as gender non-confirming cis man, but he has had periods of his life where he transitioned and then detransitioned. In early high school, he identified as non-binary. From senior year up until just before Hero was born, he lived as a trans lesbian. He doesn’t see these periods as phases, just as his identity changing over time. Currently he’s perfectly happy identifying as a man, but wouldn’t be wholly shocked if he transitioned again. Calls himself “cis but gender is obviously, massively, a social construct and so it feels unfair to expect myself to fit into these boxes when identity can be so fluid and-”

Rebecca still calls him her wife, and also a granola lesbian or MILF from time to time because it makes him laugh, and while Nicky was still in his life, he would send Sparrow trans memes a lot. Sparrow also has always liked being seen as non-binary, he sees it as ‘winning at being androgynous’. Competitive to the sense of nonsensical Sparrow my beloved

Sparrow always wears women’s clothing but that’s for autistic reasons. They just fit nicer for his brain. It helps the gender(tm) thing though, he near exclusively wore hand-me-downs from Mercedes throughout all of high school

Sorry for talking so much about Sparrow. He’s my favorite character so he is the focus of many of my thoughts. Anyways

Never been a huge fan of the ‘Grant was outed by his crush in the Forgotten Realms’ headcanon, I think Grant came out about a year beforehand. Long enough where everything about it has settled but it’s still new enough that Darryl forgot for a split second and thought Grant might have a crush on Killa during the Four Knight arc. He’d known he liked boys a while before that, and also his parents kind of figured he was gay most of his life since he had 95% girl friends

Marco is pansexual! He met Grant in college because he worked the front desk of their dorm building and would always wear a bunch of pride pins

Nicky was Grant’s first good friend who was a boy, I like to think that they were childhood friends. Grant announced this to his dad at the age of 10 by going “Nick Close is transgender now, so that means you don’t have to worry about me only talking to girls because he’s a boy.” and Darryl went “…Alright?” and then googled what ‘transgender’ means

Speaking of, Nicky realized he was trans because of Mulan. Both Glenn and Jodie, in their respective timelines, googled ‘How do I know if my daughter is a lesbian’ before he came out because Nicky would rewatch the reflection song so often and also the tomboy-isms. Everyone felt very stupid for being surprised when he cut all of his hair off, cried, and asked to change his name

T4T Nicky and Cassandra is canon and they rubbed it into everyone's faces when they were together, Anthony is just afraid of the truth

Cassandra is trans het. I love trans het people more than anything and I love her so this makes sense to me.

Veronica is non-binary, in the sense of “girl but to the left”. They/she pronouns, calls themself a girlie and a mom but not a woman, dresses in a kickass pantsuit at formal events. I’m also in love with her

Season 2 Teens and Friends

Hero and Normal are both trans. When Hero came out, Sparrow sat Normal down to explain why Hero was now a sister instead of a brother and Normal responded with “Well, that’s not fair. How come Hero can be a girl but I can’t be a boy?!” and Sparrow just stared at him for a really long time before going “You can be a boy, honey.” and they went thrift shopping as a family for new clothes the next day

Normal is stealth trans, mostly because Hero is the same way and he copies her, but also because it doesn’t really occur to him that he passes. He just figures that people knows even though he is on testosterone and binds and presents masculine. It helps that his family presents pretty gender-neutral as a whole, so most people assume he had long hair as a kid because his parents are hippies. They had a son and daughter, both with long hair. They now have a daughter and a son, both with short hair. To the general populace, nothing has changed, they just misremembered which kid was older.

Taylor is a demi-boy and spends every year growing more and more feminine. Definitely calls their gender something like ‘boy with a dash of girl on the side’ with their friends. Growing out his hair was a newer thing and he regrets cutting it, even if it was a super cool sequence and he looked like an anime protagonist, because he liked how it framed his face.

Cassandra has always maintained an openness about her trans identity, so Taylor’s the same way. He’s always got the he/they pronoun pin on (I figure this is normalized by the time of season 2, but he’s just very pleased about it), he has a variety of trans and non-binary pride pins that he cycles through, and they like painting their nails because it’s an easy way for them to feel a little more feminine.

Cassandra’s living room is decorated with a massive trans pride flag and LED lights. The first time the teens walk into Taylor’s home, Scary says “it looks like a Twitch stream in here” at the same time that Normal says “it looks like my sister’s room in here” and they high-five while Taylor yells at them to be nice.

Hermie is genderfluid and uses any pronouns. This is real to me. He has my own teenage trait of gender shifting every three hours and never knowing what to do about it and he will be suffering with this until he exits puberty, at which point he gives up and just sees what gender other people choose for him.

Hermie is also pan/ace! No further thoughts here. She just is.

Erica just goes by queer because she doesn’t think the common passerby deserves to know her rich inner life and she’s right, they don’t

I tend to say a lot that all of the S2 kids are bisexual, and I represent them as such, but I truly believe that Lincoln and Normal both have no idea what’s going on with their sexualities. They say they’re bisexual for bisexual teen squad reasons but Normal is going through a constant crisis of “Am I gay or bisexual?” and Lincoln looks up the definition of aro/ace on a weekly basis. Neither of them will ever express this until Scary goes “maybe I’m not bisexual, actually.”

On that note, Scary is a lesbian but she’s not going to realize that until college. For now, she’s rocking with the bisexuality and pretends it’s not weird that her ‘crushes’ on boys feel wildly different than her crushes on girls. Yes I am projecting. This is not a secret. We project onto Scary here.

one part headcanons one part this is just how they are in my AU probably—uh... watching a parade? idk actually. i just. drew them.

because... i felt like it.... there are still missing characters because spider-man has five million supporting characters which is truly both a blessing and a curse (also like, i didn't include any foes or villains lmao but rest assured at least two of peter's rogues are queer...)

i decided this is like 2019 or something for?? no real reason other than i guess a lot of the adults finally being out or whatever... idk... that would make peter and his friends around 30-32 on average (well no felicia would be like 34) so still youngish but also definitely Adults™...

the kids are meant to be late teens early 20s but drawing that very specific age group is like, way difficult... also all the youths are short compared to peter's friend group of exclusively 5'9" to 6' people XD (well gwen and harry are shorter so i guess it's fine XD)

some of these are more firm than others. like. should randy be straight? i dunno. is aunt may straight or are all the alive parkers bisexual lmao? idk. what about literally all of the teenagers except andi? i have no clue and a lot of the stuff with them is waaaay later and I am not anywhere close to, so i just put them all in rainbows cause why not! but i do think janine is a token heterosexual in this instance lmao—see, not ALL of my AU versions of characters are queer, just most of them

obviously felicia and peter are bisexual and flash is... probably also bi? but i'm really still not sure... but she is trans :) and they're probably poly together but even after writing man-spider i'm genuinely... not actually sure if felicia is peter and flash's girlfriend or not 😂 they've got SOMETHING going on with the three of them but what it is, idk... i think peter is definitely polyamorous regardless, it's just a question of whether their relationship is or not.

supportive aunts!! i already established like 3 years ago or something in some offhand line that MJ's aunt is an Eccentric Lesbian (huh wonder where she got that from—) so i'm sticking with the lesbian spinster aunt there. I don't know about Aunt May though. I always kind of waffled there on whether she's like straight, or bi... cause I like the thought of old ladies in love. i didn't draw the babies because i ran out of steam for that but they would be... what... i think normie might actually be in like 5th grade or something at this point now that i think about it... stanley would be like... 5 though

Hobie is bisexual almost entirely because when I read the newspaper strip and the prowler showed up, he and Peter were giving me Flirtation Vibes so he is bi, and also punk because I enjoy the aesthetic Spider-Punk has going on, so even though that's not going to be a thing in this universe, I still like to make some little nods to it. also it just feels like a fun combo. he's a kind of alt guy, he's not very straight, he's not very normal, he's had issues in his life trying to figure out who he wants to be... it feels like it just fits well... i like it

he gets MORE punk AFTER college and shaves half his head etc. (instead of having his twist-out), which is funny to me but you know, it takes time to figure shit out sometimes... i didn't draw his girlfriend Mindy (wife? idk if/when they get married in this AU...) cause like i said, omg, so many people to draw... also idk if she's like, straight or what. probably? there's gotta be SOME straight people XD how does she feel about hobie's fro-hawk...? hmm

ah, cain and abel ben (and janine)

Ben is bisexual... like Peter. They both prefer women to some extent, but they have slightly different tastes (...well maybe not SO different) and Ben is more uh, subby? LOL—at least with Janine. Switchy. Unlike Peter, Ben has/had? a crush on Robbie LMAO but that's more of a like, mentor/mentee admiration kind of thing... not like a "i wanna make out with you" situation. Robbie is far too old for him. and also happily married.

In my notes I have that Ben was ofc also abused by Warren but a lot of his was medical and psychological (some physical as well), but... i would think there is an undercurrent of medical sexual abuse there nonetheless esp as much of this w/ warren hinges on sexual power dynamics and control, but i won't get into that here as it's partly still being developed and I don't want to get TOO heavy on this post lol

Kaine is, like I mentioned, a little complex and i'm not 100% sure about (also aracely painted his nails) I think that he's ~bi/pan in general? but maybe not? could be only into men? or not into anyone at all. but the thing about Kaine in this universe is that he's got a difficult relationship with sex and sexuality because of what he was put through by Warren, so while I don't necessarily think he's asexual I do think in this universe he's a little bit sex-averse or sex-repulsed and has a difficult time dealing with that stuff. He also just really desperately wants to be loved and he doesn't care who as long as it's someone, which is toxic in a lot of ways i think... being around Aracely would imo help him a lot in coming to terms with having like, normal, platonic, non-sexual, non-romantic, healthy (or at least healthier) interpersonal relationships, and understanding things like that... idk where he's at by 2019 though, mental health-wise... but yeah i wasn't really sure what colors or patterns to put on his clothes so i went with the dark purple and gray tones since they are the kind of common recurring colors on a lot of ace-spec flags including repulsion and related stuff.

as a sidenote as someone who has a kind of aro and ??? relationship w/ my own bisexuality etc. (idk if i consider myself ace necessarily but it's not totally irrelevant) i also don't want to like, Just Make Him Ace because trauma (but obv betty is aro at least) cause it's not that simple etc etc etc but also there absolutely are people who consider themselves asexual from trauma or for whom it's informed by trauma (though trauma would inform any aspect of interpersonal relationships, of course, and for kaine it does)... idk idk kaine is always like, much to think about for me. He's def not like... "normal" in the eyes of cishet patriarchal culturally christian society. I mean he's disabled for one thing,

ofc peter has many similar traumas esp after meeting kaine and HE'S def not asexual (though peter is also disabled)

idk idk i am always thinking about it and never quite sure. kaine has a very complex and largely negative relationship with his body.

i was also considering genetic mosaicism (46,XY/47,XXY) but i did not include any intersex colors etc. because a lot of this wasn't fully hammered out yet when i drew this. I think Kaine is probably intersex though. It's not necessarily obvious to anyone who looks at him, but it's also not something that comes as a huge surprise to him.

obvs the tiny hint of a teal ribbon is the same as for Peter, sexual assault/abuse awareness, and it's small and easily hidden. probably was given to him by someone trying to be supportive (ben and janine maybe? idk)—i mean ALL of it is from other people really. the sticker on the noise cancelling headphones? def from Aracely or someone else. his presence in the first place? dragged out of the house by a 19 year old girl. he didn't even have time to do his hair and he would rather be drinking coffee in a dark room alone :/

I decided at some point Janine is straight (but not narrow, as they say) so she gets an ally shirt lol. Like Peter and Kaine, I put her in some teal including a little ribbon bow on some satin ballet flats—obviously her history as a sexual abuse survivor etc. is very, very public in contrast to peter and kaine (and arguably ben, though i don't think he necessarily conceptualizes his abuse by warren in the same way, in part because it was very medicalized) but... it's not like she would want to draw a lot of attention to that. but i also do just like teal so i think it looks nice.

like those are just genuinely cute shoes 😂 but also it's to tie it all together.

i actually do know what's up with Andi cause she's actually supposed to first appear in 200...8? when she's like. 10. she is trans, and she is also why Flash was able to accept herself more and also why Flash transitioned. Flash wanted to be a good role model to help Andi feel good about herself and to not make her feel like there was something wrong with her, and then later re: transitioning, Flash saw how happy Andi was and wanted to also... be happy like that even though she was scared. and Andi herself really was (will be, idk i never know what tense to use for this stuff) helped a lot by Flash trying to self-improve, by having a supportive babysitter, and a dad who loves her, and so on and so forth... makes a big difference!

Andi and Flash are kind of intentional contrasts here in that, where Flash took until her late 20s to really fully be able to accept herself, Andi is the kid who goes on puberty blockers in high school and knew right away she wasn't what everyone said she was. (Flash had like, hints of that, but really didn't even realize until around ~19 years old and wasn't able to act on it for like... 9 years whereas Andi just really got motoring lol)

I wasn't sure about her at first but I was chatting with Kita and I was like, thinking about her relationships and stuff and thinking, you know, she seems kinda aro... and then i was like... So it's pride month so of course im going to write a oneshot about teen reder making everyone go to Pride with them becuase i dint nearly see enough of these on here.

summary: It's pride Month and the reader wlaks in to the teams work and demands that they all come to pride with them to celebrate.

Third person pov...

It was the first of June which meant Pride Month! Y/N had been excited about it all year, they couldn't wait to get thr team to go to a Pride Parade with them and to celebrate it all together.

Y/N themselves was Non-binary and (What Sexuality you are) and are very proud to be it, they are always seen wearing their pronouns badge and Non-binary pin.

Y/N was making their way to the FBI building, in their hands were mini pride flags and stickers for all their friends, once they got to the floor they skipped out of the elevator and into the bullpen.

The team didn't see them so they quickly began putting each team members flags into their pen pots. Bisexual, Asexual and Genderfluid for Spencer. Biromantic to Derek. Bisexual for JJ. Lesbian for Emily.

As Rossi, Hotch and Penelope all had offices Y/N lefts their flags outside the doors and knocked so they saw them, once the Teen was done they went to the round table and sat on a chair waiting for the team to notice them.

A couple minutes later all 7 members wondered into the room, smiling when they see the teen not expecting them to be there. Once everyone was sitting Y/N stood up.

"Okay guys as you know it's Pride Month, which means Virginia is having its Pride Parade and I was wondering if you'd like to go to it with me?" They ask nervously, they had never asked the team anything to do woth pride even though they had been out as Non-binary to them for years.

Thw first perosn to speak was Penelope they squealed and stood up a giant smile on her face. She then reached out and hugged Y/N tightly. "Of course we will sweetie, won't we giys?" She says making then other all say yes and take turns hugging Y/N.

After they had finished hugging Y/N the teen began ruffling through their bag again and pulled out pin badges for everyone with their flags on. "For you guys I have mine" they say pointing to their Non-binary pin and (Y/S) badge proudly.

Once everyone had theirs, they all went back to work, the pride parade wasn't until that Saturday.

Timeskip...

It was Saturday morning and Y/N was awake and doing their make up for pride, once they were done they left their house and made their way to the middle of town where the team was waiting.

JJ had brought Henry and Will, Hotch also had Henry with him, Y/N was happy to see them all wearing something to do with their flags.

Penelope was decked out in the colours of the Pan flag and had a small demigirl flag painted on their face.

Hotch had a Bisexual flag on his face and a trans flag in his hand, he also had a Demisexual flag pinned to his tshit, Jack was holding a small pride flag in his hand a hug grin on his face.

Y/N almost cried at what Rossi was wearing, it was a tshirt that read 'Free Dad hugs' Y/N laughed when they saw 'Grand' written infront of the Dad part definitely Morgan or Emily's doing, he also had a small Biromantic flag painted on his face.

Spencer was wearing the Asexual colours, had a Bisexual flag tied to their shoulders and had the Genderfluid flag painted on his cheek, he too had a huge smile on his face.

Derek had a Biromantic flag on his cheek and was wearing the Bi colours definitely Penelopes doing.

Emily had the lesbian flag painted on her face and the Lesbian flag tied around her shoulder proudly.

JJ had a Bisexual flag painted on her face, Will was wearing a tshirt that read 'I love my Bi wife' which was cute and little Henry was holding a rainbow flag like Jack.

"You all look amazing!" Exclaimed the teen, very happy to see the team in the spirit, they really thought they wouldn't wear anything especially Hotch. "Let's go enjoy the parade!" They yelled before running into the park.

The park itself was filled with people who were there celebrating pride and wearing their flags. Rossi got so many hugs from teens who got kicked out or aren't supported by their parents which made the old man cry.

They stayed in the park until the parade was starting one it did the team all joined in and took any pictures together to remember the day they had.

By the end the kids had fallen asleep, Jack and Henry had gotten alot of stickers and were covered in them, Y/N was scrolling through their phone smiling at all the pictures and videos they took together.

Before everyone left they stood up and turned to all 7 of them. "Thank you all for doing this with me I had alot of fun" they said making the Adults smile at the teen.

"Of course Y/N, your our kid how could we not do this together" Hotch says making the teen tear up, thw teen then hugs the man tightly to hugs them back

It truly was an amazing day for everyone.

the queerness of 2012 is really weird because it straddles the line of plausible deniability so well and the fact it's so obviously edgy teenage boy coded, so when something kinda queer happens you're like "wait was that intentional or" as opposed to Rise, where the queer coding is blatant, especially with its usage of gender nonconformity and literally putting a rainbow flag into the show

so anyway here's an essay about leo's bisexuality. yes this will be covering his crush on karai in a romantic context even though everyone hates it and wants to rephrase it as gender envy, i'm sorry but someone has to do it

The first question we must ask, does Leo have some kind of indication of having attraction to more than one gender?

There was a tumblr post recounting canon tmnt facts, one of which says the art book states that Leo has a 'man crush' on Captain Ryan.

Which, I am wheezing at the idea that the thing that makes Leo imperfect is the fact he has a man crush on Captain Ryan. Nothing else, just the man crush.

I did google the definition of a man crush because even though I am clearly just so manly what the heck is that.

-an intense and typically non-sexual liking or admiration felt by one man for another. -a man who is the object of another's intense liking or admiration.

Yeah that's approximately Leo's relationship with Captain Ryan, an intense admiration for a fictional man. Obviously, having a man crush doesn't automatically mean you're attracted to men, but given Leo's general behaviors in the show, I'm more inclined to believe he does have Some Kind of attraction to men.

Karai

The thing about Leo's crush on Karai is that it was executed in a distinctly different way than any of his brothers' love affairs.

With his brothers, they're very open about the fact they're into whatever girl the narrative has assigned them. Donnie's crush has been known by everyone since episode 1 and he and Mikey are not subtle about their admiration. Raph was talking about how cool he thinks Mona is and if turtles and newts can go on dates even though she was introduced as an antagonist before becoming an ally.

Karai was also introduced as an antagonist who Leo has some kind of attraction to, but he hid it. He refused to tell his family about it, only telling April who then chastised him about it. His family only found out by accident, and even then he either didn't tell them he liked her, shrouded in excuses of "We both like the fine craftsmenship of swords" and "I can see the good in her, I can save her", or begrudginly added "I guess I sort of liked her" at the end.

This reads as a very queer narrative, closeted kids discovering themselves and only their friends know out of fear of getting rejected by their families.

And this is also why I do think Leo has an Actual Crush on Captain Ryan. Trying to explain it as having an admiration for Captain Ryan and wanting to be a hero is much the same as trying to explain why he was hanging out with Karai, wanting to help her or admire swords.

His personality as a Very Good Boy who follows the rules and cares if they accidentally hurt people exemplifies the changes he went through from Karai's influence.

(also like. if space heroes is supposed to be a parody of star trek. girl star trek is so horny. and Leo says that space heroes has a ton of fans currently, implying he's seen the fanbase, and the very strong possibility that the fanbase is mostly populated by gay fanfiction

and yknow. Leo's the embodiment of 2010's tumblr fangirl, which has a lil queer autistic in it)

Karai is very visibly a lesbian, an edgy punk butch lesbian, and she and Shinigami lowkey embody a butch femme dynamic and the fact Karai is depicted as the more formidable, domineering force with a sword and Shinigami as a bit more pathetic with a cat is reminiscent of the japanese lesbian dynamics from this post. It's all very gay.

And she's an antagonist lesbian to Leo's closeted and internalized biphobia.

She represents the desire to give up and be swallowed by selfishness, forgoing responsibility and cleanliness in favor of having fun.

Leo is resistant to giving in. His attempts to do so immediately get shut down, and he's rejected by his family, even for a moment, for wanting to go do Bad Things. He tries to fix Karai, make her good and acceptable. But he slips further, eventually falling into Karai's circle to be gay and commit crimes against the Foot Clan empire.

In this way his sexuality is explored through self expression, the moral ambiguity, and transition from an absolute rule follower caring deeply about the affects his actions has on others to burning a building full of money. It's very classic "good girl getting corrupted" story telling, but at the same time it isn't, because Leo maintains an overall good moral compass, he just grew up. Sometimes killing people is a necessity, sometimes you make mistakes, sometimes people get hurt.

Being queer stops being this huge shameful, evil thing and it starts just being part of you.

So, I for years would put the bi flag behind a character, as a headcanon or they WERE bi or because I just felt like it. I changed my icon to Van from Yellowjackets and, confident she would NOT ID as bi, it felt odd to put the flag behind her even if it was MY identity. So I put a shared one: butch.

Now, there’s lots of lesbian flags, trans inclusive or exclusive, there is the labrys, with all its complicated history and imagery. And there’s two butch flags. This one, which stresses butch lesbian:

And this one, which tends to either say butch lesbian or butch on its own:

I liked it, for its similarity to the Bear Flag, another group of shunned and complicated queer mascs.

Do I identify with the term lesbian?

Yes and no. I identify with it for the fact that many people have used it how I use bisexual throughout history, as for many it was more adjacent to “sapphic” or “likes women in a gay way.” There are male lesbians and bi lesbians and nb lesbians and lots of ways to be a lesbian. Some used the label AS a gender.

In many ways I identify with it, in others, the label makes me feel distant from another part of myself. My attraction to men would often be assumed absent if I used lesbian INSTEAD of bisexual, regardless of it I or others used it that way. So I hover on the cusp of the term lesbian and reach for bisexual first, sometimes only.

Now, words like dyke? I get told you cannot reclaim it if you aren’t a capital L Lesbian. But I’ve been called it. Plenty. I would attend dyke marches. The Boston Dyke March explicitly included bi dykes in their definition. Frankly, they said anyone who identifies with being a dyke is welcome to call themselves one.

So what about butch? I tell people to read it all the time but I went and copied the full opening essay of Butch Is A Noun titled “I Know What Butch Is” and will add it under the cut.

But long story (essay) short, if you identify with butchness, congrats, you’re a butch, and can use the butch flag.

I know what butch is. I know, and I’m going to tell you, so listen up and take notes. First of all, butch is a noun. And an adjective. And a verb.

Butches only ever wear jeans and boots, except if they’re wearing suits, and they keep their hair clipped down to a flattop you could putt off. Except if they have to for work. Or if they want to for sex. Or if they want to for some other reason. But otherwise it’s denim and leather and butch wax, kid, and don’t you forget it. Unless you’re vegan.

Toughness, even at the expense of gentleness, is a butch trait. Butches are outlaws. Also gentlemen. Gentlemen who open doors and pick up checks and say “after you” and hold your umbrella over you in the rain while the water drips down their sleeves. But butches not gentlemen if being a gentleman means imposing on the unsuspecting their sexist modes of acting out the cultural paradigm of the helplessness of women. Except if the unsuspecting are crying and need a handkerchief, or elderly and need a seat to sit down in, then it’s all right. Probably. But butches should never wait for a femme to tell them specifically that it is all right to behave in a gentlemanly fashion, they should just go ahead and do it because femmes like a butch with confidence, unless it turns out that she finds it offensive and feels as though you have imposed your gender fetish on her, you arrogant bastard.

And butches are monosyllabic, until you get to know them, which they will not allow but want, or will allow and want, or will allow but don’t want, or won’t allow and don’t want, so you may or may not get to know them, but you should try, or not. But butches are monosyllabic because all that talking is girl stuff, you know? Butches grunt in answer to questions; they speak sharply and emphatically. They do not share, process, or explain because these are activities that bring nothing but trouble, unless they are bringing relief to the troubled heart of a butch carrying around too much hurt or pain, though butches do not actually feel pain; they’re tough enough to either slough it off like dead skin or deal with all of that themselves. Unless someone wants for them to be emotionally available, in which case they can feel their feelings even though the presence of feelings is suspect in the first place, but they must stop immediately as soon as someone else is having a tough time so that all their resources can be directed to soothing that person.

I know what butch is. Butches are not beginner FTMs, except that sometimes they are, but it’s not a continuum except when it is. Butch is not a trans identity unless the butch in questions says it is, in which case it is, unless the tranny in question says it isn’t, in which case it’s not. There is no such thing as butch flight, no matter what the femmes or elders say, unless saying that invalidates the opinions of femmes in a sexist fashion or the opinions of elders in an ageist fashion. Or if they’re right. But they are not, because butch and transgender are the same thing with different names, except that butch is not a trans identity, unless it is; see above.

Butches are always tops. They always fuck the girls, and, for that matter, their partners are always girls; there is no such thing as a butch who is attracted to men. Well, transmen, but that’s just butch-on-butch repackaged as faggotry. But no non-trans-men. Unless the butch in question is a non-trans-man, then it’s okay. Except that non-trans-men cannot be butches, because butch is a queering of gender that assigned-male people cannot embody, unless they occasionally can, in which case they have to be gay men. Or the partners of femmes. Or not. But no one with an assigned-female body can be a butch and do it with assigned-male men. Unless they’re femmes. Or butches. I’m really putting my foot down on this one.

I know what butch is, and butches definitely, absolutely, do not get fucked, even if it feels so good to have someone slide in sweet and hard and rock them just right. They might eat pussy but they never suck cock, because licking pussy is chivalry without pants, and, of course, any butch would want to do anything to please the femme in hir life, if there is a femme. Which there has to be, in order to be a true butch, except if there does not have to be, but you cannot be a misogynist about it either, which a lack of interest in femmes and their attendant delights may be read as—if there is a lack, which there shouldn’t be. But anyway, cocksucking is about ownership and dominance, so butches must always be the ones having their cocks sucked, unless the owner of the cock being sucked by a butch is tied to something, but if a butch were tying down someone with a cock of some variety then the above rule would quite likely be violated, and I think I’ve been very clear about that, so never mind.

Butch has a lot of privilege because butches pass as men a lot, and butches also have a lot of privilege in the queer community because butch reads as queer and femme doesn’t always, and being able to pass to keep one’s self safe isn’t privilege if you’re a femme but it is if you’re a butch. Unless this is a butch who can pass as a heteronormative woman, in which case ze’s not really a butch anyway because no butch could do such a thing. Except that some of them can and also having kids really helps, even though no butch could have kids because of the rule about not getting fucked and also because that’s a femme’s job, but not everyone really understood their butchness all the way along and also sometimes there are fertility issues and also sometimes there’s not a femme so we’ll grandfather in some children but we’ll be suspicious of those butches. Unless they’re really great butch dads of whatever sex, in which case we’ll think it’s the damn cutest thing in the world and punch them on the arm, or if they’re awesome butch moms we’ll make approving comments about their ability to raise feminist men, but otherwise no children and no heteronormativity for sure, except for assigned male butches who do not exist.

Besides all of that, the butch pays. If there’s only one butch on the date. Unless the femme wants to. If there’s a femme present. If there’s a femme present, the butch pays unless hir paying would upset the femme or unless it creates class issues for the butch or patriarchy issues for the femme. Or if it’s two butches on a date, which they shouldn’t be. Or they should. In any case, they arm-wrestle for it. Except in such situations in which a public display of aggression on the part of butches, or an interaction which may be read as such, could potentially be detrimental to the community, to the mental health of those witnessing the act, to the butches themselves for feeling compelled to act out normative masculine-gendered conflict-resolution tactics, or to the glassware of the dining establishment, which so often gets broken. But otherwise, the butch always pays, and there’s just no getting around that.

I know what butch is. Butches are a brotherhood, or possibly a sisterhood, which would be a marvelous way to reclaim butch’s roots in the lesbian community except some butches were never part of the lesbian community and some were but aren’t any more, but placing masculine identities on butches is disrespectful, except when it’s desirable, but anyway, butches are a tribe, a tribe of people who have been maligned endlessly for, and in fact forged an identity in part out of, not fitting the gendered expectations of the culture in which they exist (until or unless they work to pass as men, which always or never or sometimes happens and is absolutely a great or problematic thing), so butches are very open to gendered variations in others and would never, ever try to make another butch feel like shit for having displayed a behavior which does not fit the microculture’s standard of what it means to be a butch, which is a useful or idealized or ridiculous or just plain complicated standard, so it should be adhered to, or critiqued, or aspired to, or not. Butches would also certainly never try to school younger butches in ways that are angry and dangerous because they feel like the process of toughening has disappeared from modern culture and butches need to be tough, dammit. Butches who do those sorts of things either are Real Butches or are Not Real Butches, depending who you ask.

There, that should be perfectly clear.
