ttrpgs with in-depth magic systems?

THEME: In-Depth Magic Systems

You'll find a number of trad games here because that's what pops into my head when someone talks about in-depth magic.

Mage: The Ascension and Mage: The Awakening, by Onyx Path Publishing.

The Council of Nine Mystic Traditions, a loose coalition of nine organizations of differing philosophies and magical practices, stand for personal freedom -- sometimes regardless of cost -- and responsibility. In opposition is the shadowy Technocratic Union, a seemingly monolithic conspiracy which seeks to protect humanity from the unseen dangers of the universe at large, typically through ignorance and control. Other factions, the Nephandi and the Marauders, who personify the depths humanity can sink to and the abdication of responsibility, also have their part to play in the struggle as each side strives to win over and guide -- or rule -- the unknowing masses of the world. (Mage: the Ascension)

You are a mage, one of the Wise. You see, know, and explore what others can’t imagine, from the depths of the human soul to the hidden corners of reality. Armed with your spells, driven by an addiction to Mysteries, you delve into the secrets of the world. Knowledge has a price, and the dangers are many. (Mage: The Awakening)

Mage: The Ascension was originally published by White Wolf in 1993, and Mage: The Awakening was released in 2005 as part of the company’s attempt to “update” their settings to a newer rule-set. The fans wouldn’t have that, however, so now both versions of Mage can be found on places such as DriveThruRpg.

The lore for both of these games has overlap, but they are distinctly different. In Mage: The Ascension, there is more conflict between mages, especially in regards to technology vs mysticism. In Mage: The Awakening, mages have a more common culture even if their magical practices differ. What both of these systems offer is a complex system of magic, rife with politics (as is traditional for any World of Darkness game) and a long storied history that the mages of today cannot extricate themselves from. If you love reading about lore, factions, and secret societies, these might games worth getting into.

Ars Magica, by Atlas Games.

Ars Magica is the award-winning roleplaying game by Jonathan Tweet and Mark Rein•Hagen about wizards and their allies in Mythic Europe. This flexible, deeply built world can support games that are historically accurate or fantasy-based, epic or small scale, political or personal.

Players work together to tell the story of their covenant — all of the magi, their companions, and grogs. This history can span decades. It might be heroic, tragic, or both in turn. The covenant could influence the entirety of Mythic Europe or the fates of a small corner of the world.

Spells will be cast. Duels won and lost. Houses may rise and fall. But magic is forever.

Ars Magica has been around for a long time, the first version of the game going back to 1987. It uses d10s and stat bonuses, but the magic system in particularly is known to be a major focus of the game. Spells are rituals and must be learned, and if used too quickly, can cause fatigue. The system details a number of rules for creating magical items, studying magical books, creating new spells, binding familiars, etc. If you are interested in a medieval magic setting and decades of lore, this might be your game.

MEGALOS, by matura (@matty-from-megalos).

MEGALOS is a game for telling stories about adventures in the clouds, fighting evil empires, and dueling ancient gods. The Worlds of MEGALOS are vast and old, each a cosmic emanation connected to one another by the Wellspring- the source of all aether in the cosmos. Make your own World of MEGALOS or play in one of the standard ones, from the Oradam Rift to Pallid Telkane to Zone Gachette. Soar through the air in an airship, dogfight imperials, and wield aetheric magicks as a punk-rock witch.

This tabletop game is inspired by things like classic JRPGs, electronica music, and medieval alchemy. MEGALOS is the first of the creator's games to use the SLIPSTREAM game engine, which uses pools of d20s as the core of its task resolution mechanic.

As a science-fantasy setting, MEGALOS roots its magic in Aether crystals, a naturally occurring concentration of energy. This means that magic is explainable and quantifiable - meaning that you can create a lot of interesting magical technology in this game. Your characters abilities are split up over traits, skills and cutscene approaches for a mix of stat-driven and narrative play (although combat rules feature heavily in this book). There’s also character Classes and Callings, which distinguish you from other characters, and also grant you access to specific Powers and Talents. To me, this looks like each character’s approach to magic will be dependant on the categories they choose at character creation, and magic generally seems to be a common method of combat.

The full rulebook is $25, but if you want to take a look at just the plaintext rules, you can download them for free! If you’re interested in expanding the game, there’s also a Webs and Wires Supplement that includes extra options for magitek gear, new callings and classes, and expanded rules! If you like a combination of modular characters and narratively interesting choices, you might want to check this game out.

Lex Arcana, by Archeron Games.

In Lex Arcana, you are a Custos (warden) of the Cohors Auxiliaria Arcana, sent by the Emperor to the four corners of the world to further the study of arcane lore, investigate forbidden cults, and face the thread posed by dangerous supernatural creatures.

The Emperor needs you! 

Join the Cohors Auxiliaria Arcana, enter the world of Lex Arcana and dive into the mysteries and dangers of ancient Rome. You and the other Custodes will travel to the four corners of the land, investigate terrifying threats, recover lost relics, unearth forgotten secrets and fight legendary supernatural creatures.

Bundle of Holding describes this game as Cthulhu Invictus meets The X-Files: it’s a game in which Rome never fell and the supernatural and arcane is a constant mystery that must be unravelled. Your characters are paragons of combat and magic, and have been recruited for the Auxiliary Cohort of Secrets, tasked with unveiling supernatural threats and stopping them. Spells in this game are called Indigitamenta, or Incantations, and represent calling onto Roman Deities for aid. Rolling in this game can use any dice - and in fact, they players can choose whether they roll a dice pool or a larger dice - 3d4, 2d6, or 1d12 for example, if your stats total 12.

I think this is a really interesting set of mechanics, and I expect the lore of drawing upon divine power to fuel your spells to be equally fun to play with. Bundle of Holding has a bundle on for this game until June 26 that’s a really great deal - you should check it out!

So, occasionally I do adventure out of my comfort zone and read something other than Harry and Draco falling in love for the 1246th time in a row. This month I've been enjoying some magnificent entries in HP rare pair fair (@hprarepairfest) - all the love for this fest. Also I've been exploring some jegulus which I'm absolutely obsessed, at least in theory. In reality I don't think I'm honestly strong enough for the marauders era at all, that shit fucking hurts and I salute all those who go through it day to day. You're amazing.

So, without futher ado, my november non-drarry favorites:

Apple Tree and Juniper by @trueliarose 💫 Harry/Charlie, 17,732 words

Charlie Weasley: dragon tamer, single, attractive and the man Harry had had a crush on for years - what will happen when said man has to take some time off at work and decides to occupy himself by helping out with Harry's business?

Now, the thing about me is that I'm the biggest simp for Charlie Weasley. He makes me absolutely feral. The whole idea of getting it on with your best friends brother is like fucking ecstasy to me, and this might or might not stem from personal experiences. Out of all the Weasley siblings Charlie with Harry is just 🤌🤌 Now this fic had it all. A little angst, lots of fluff, Harry being all crafty crafty, TENSION and PINING, amazing magical woodworking lore (??? idk but i love it).. and the best part is that I noticed the author started a series with this fic being the opening act - I've never in my life hit that subscribe button as fast as I did with this one. God is good.

Choices by @sophsicle 💫 Regulus/James, 624,178 words

People make mistakes, but they also make choices. It’s important to James, that difference. He does his best not to confuse the two.

This is an honourable mention on this list since I read this already in October. But listen, I'm fucking traumatized by this fic. This was my first jegulus, my first marauders I've ever finished, and my 13th goddamn reason. And I can't even blame anybody other than myself, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into. I binge-read this in a day and a half and in retrospect I should've taken it a little more easy. But what can I say, I'm an all or nothing kinda girl. Chapter 53 hits different at 4am, just saying. The writing was hauntingly beautiful and I still think daily about some quotes and scenes from this fic. This fic is a journey and I'm glad I took it.

Light Bringer by meanwhiletimely 💫 Albus/Gellert, 10,678 words

Gellert doesn't simply shine—Gellert blazes, casting all around him into shadow with sheer dazzling force of being. When he turns that beatific gaze on you, your whole body comes alive for him: heat flaring up from within, blood in your veins turned to light.

This story is EVERYTHING. I was holding by breath while reading this. Beautiful. I love grindeldore (even though my resentment of Albus is as deep as the Mariana Trench), and this has to be one of the most beautiful fics I've ever read. This was written in second person POV which made the fic even more intense. Like I felt every word in my soul. Lots of love.

Mystic Lake of Memory by @sliebman10 💫 Harry/George, 5,055 words

As George's thirtieth birthday approaches, Harry convinces him to go on holiday to Loch Ness, where he and Fred had originally planned to spend their birthday in search of the sea monster.

Fred and George remain as an open wound for me still after all these years. This fic was sweet and melancholic at the same time, I absolutely loved how their relationship had grown and this fic was pretty as a picture. Absolute joy.

Sleeping With Ghosts by @ghaniblue 💫 Regulus/Harry/Draco, 27,902 words

Harry wakes in an unfamiliar bed to Regulus pointing a wand at his head, and then Draco moves into his house. Harry just wants the world to fuck off; being able to sleep through the night would be appreciated, too. This is the story of one very tired saviour of the wizarding world, a resurrected corpse and a mean little ferret living in Grimmauld Place together, drinking too much tea, talking less than is warranted, and falling in love.

I'm a slut for triads. Even more of a slut if two thirds of the triad is drarry. This fic was everything. It was so witty and funny and I was seriously laughing out loud reading this. I need this relationship tag to BLOW THE FUCK UP in 2024. I loved the build up and the ending was perfect. I really enjoyed Regulus' characterization and I think this fic really hits the spot with how I imagine him being. The interaction between the three of them was amazing.

Sweet Boy by @maraudersaffair 💫 Harry/Narcissa, 6,261 words

Harry agrees to date Narcissa to help her improve the reputation of her family. The intensity of their sexual chemistry takes them both by surprise, and it turns out there is nothing fake about their arrangement.

After reading this I decided that being a MILF is a state of mind and that being said I am one now. Do I have any kids? No. Will I have any kids? God knows. This fic was delicious in all the ways and more and I love Narcissa. So much.

Two of the Easiest Words in Gaelic by sky_watcher_rose 💫 Druella/Minerva, 27,902 words

Minerva will be the first to admit that Druella Rosier was the love of her life. But it’s been twenty years since they last saw each other, and she’s done her best to move on. When Druella unexpectedly arrives at a parents’ evening - the first she’s attended in the four years that Minerva has been teaching her children - both of them have to face up to certain feelings that never went away.

I usually shy away from muggle au's, but this was magical nevertheless. It was the first fic with this pairing I've ever read (and yes I have to admit I had to google who Druella was). The Scottish winter vibes were immaculate. I absolutely adore the "one that got away" kinda vibe in this one. There was this one quote from Minerva which was something like "I'm Scottish, nothing depresses me except bad whiskey" and I felt that in my core. Feel u sis, even though I'm not a Scot.

Unguarded-series by birdsofshore 💫 Draco/Albus Severus, 5 works, 38,834 words in total

Dilf-Draco is all I need in my life. So fucking hot.

I hope that after Fall of X is over and we get into the Rise of the Powers of X era, we get a new Destiny map, like the one we got in Immortal X-Men #3. Watching how many of the possible futures Irene mapped play out or get ticked off as no longer being possibilities was a fun element and I really hope we get something like it moving forward. Especially since Irene said all the previous futures she foresaw vanished the moment the Moira Engine was destroyed, and its a whole new ballgame now.

Except, also, its not.

Because her visions of the future were always a completely different thing from the futures that ALREADY happened, thanks to Moira's past lives. The futures we saw through Irene's eyes, like the Empire of the Red Diamond in Sins of Sinister, or the Expanse.....those are null and void now, with the last viable one left from her original map being A New Krakoa.

But while most people concluded that Rise of X was going to follow Fall of X, the specific callbacks to House of X and Powers of X are key. This era is technically called Fall of the House of X, and the next one is Rise of the Powers of X.....meaning that the futures MOIRA already saw are going to become more relevant. House of X was always more focused on the present day, and mutantkind facing their Earth-based enemies like Orchis. Powers of X still always showed a united mutantkind....but those issues were focused on the future, longterm threats facing mutants. Specifically, the Phalanx and the Dominions.

And especially with Mother Righteous seeming close to attaining Dominion status with what she's doing in Immortal X-Men, and Sins of Sinister Year 1000 confirming that at least one of the four Sinisters does attain Dominion status and Mother Righteous being the most likely contender (the writers all like her too much for it to be anyone else. Nobody cares about Orbis Stellaris, and only Duggan gives a shit about Dr. Stasis)...

That to me suggests that after Fall of X we're FINALLY gonna have a breather from Orchis and the constant focus on human bigotry and the new Krakoa will (along with a newly united Arakko, their new direction reaffirmed after Lodus Logos and Storm's faction wins the Genesis War) shift as they turn their focus towards more cosmic storylines. And part of why I think Mother Righteous is the one who'll win Dominion-hood is because the Phalanx are already out there as a Dominion-tier threat and they've put too much work into building up the mystical side of the X-books to pump the brakes there now....so mutantkind will be facing the threat of a mystical Dominion via Mother Righteous, and the cosmic Dominion threat of the Phalanx.

And this was the original Destiny map, and we saw where the bottom branch of it led, all the way to The Expanse, which is what resulted in this future:

The Legion XII branch was a non-starter (my hunch is its what would have happened if Legion took Mother Righteous' deal back in Legion of X #2, but the second he turned her down and she offered the Spirit of Variance to Sean instead, that timeline got snipped).

The Reign of Apocalypse likely got snipped via Apocalypse's own choices to shift his priorities down the road that's led to him changing his name and approach to Revelation now.

Cassandra Supernova was likely a timeline teasing the plotline Orlando was setting up in Marauders, for Nova to escape from Threshold and plot her revenge through the ages...

Nimrod Extinction Event, and how often it recurred as a possibility, is self-explanatory, and so is Krakoan Dissolution. And the Spark Inquisition is IMO where things might have led if they hadn't detected Onslaught's influence and he'd gotten his hooks into the Altar and corrupted what they were building there.

And of course, all of those possibilities were snipped for good the second Judgment Day happened, and committed the timeline to only following one of the branches that branched off AFTER that point....

With the second Nimrod Extinction Event likely being if Orchis succeeds here and now, The Broken Sword being what might have happened if they hadn't figured out Brand was a traitor and her influence over SWORD had been left unchecked (with the Brand-as-a-traitor discovery notably only happening AFTER Judgment Day).

And of course Sins of Sinister is the branching event that led directly into The Empire of the Red Diamond and from there, the Storm System, with both those branches being snipped off the second Moira broke the Moira Engine in the future and Mother Righteous' spell broke it in the present. And we don't have any info yet on what the new future looks like, because we haven't seen Destiny map out its possibilities yet.

But all of that leaves us with the one remaining possible timeline branch, given that we know thanks to well, genre basics, that mutantkind are not going to be wiped out in Fall of X and the second Nimrod Extinction Event is not the outcome here.....leaving....A New Krakoa as the last of Destiny's mapped outcomes. With Fall of the House of X leaving Moira and Xavier out of prominence and favor, and the whole Quiet Council having resigned as of the Hellfire Gala, post FoX, Krakoans are likely going to elect an entire new Council, this time chosen by the people rather than handpicked by the three Founders.....

And then it'll be a brand new ballgame with no futures we've seen so much as a hint of yet, because as of the end of Fall of X, its a completely blank slate.

Despite ALL the foreknowledge, prophecies, time-travelers and precogs in play this era....

Sinister with his Moira Engine (gone)...

Moira with her past lives (the knowledge in them rendered null and void by the simple basic fact that Moira only betrayed mutantkind because her past lives had her convinced that mutantkind ALWAYS loses and Omega Sentinel, who came back from the future of Moira's current life, Life X, only did so because in HER past, mutantkind WON)....

Destiny with her map (followed to completion)...

Etc, etc....

All of that advance intel has all been used up as of now or altered past the point of usefulness. Same being true of all the future knowledge of everyone who was worried about Orchis winning and wiping out mutantkind here, if in fact mutantkind does not end up wiped out, which we know they won't....which means Kid Cable's concerns, etc, are no longer viable.

Tabula Rasa time.

Except for one last time-traveler. The only one left who might have future knowledge that's still relevant, because her future is the only one that still has a possibility of coming true....

Omega Sentinel.

With a possible map of what's to come, in...Rise of the Powers of X.

Because, after all, her future....is the one where mutants win.

Badlands Howl (Complete)

On a gray Halloween day, Sansa travels alone across South Dakota and finds herself inexplicably drawn to the Badlands for what was supposed to be a brief stop. A park ranger tells her a tale befitting All Hallows’ Eve about the Badlands rider—a restless spirit who haunts the land astride his black horse, his face half-burned from hellfire and his unearthly howl famed for the misfortune it brings.

Despite the frightening tale, Sansa finds herself enchanted and, amongst the Badlands’s haunting austerity and bewitching wonder, she encounters the Badlands rider and far more than she ever could have bargained for.

Spooky, sexy, sad, sweet, and spiritual. 

Ride (Complete)

Sansa and Sandor each have their reason for buying a one-way ticket out of town. As an early autumn storm brews, they find themselves alone together on an abandoned train platform with more in common than one might think.

But there's something strange about the train that rolls into the station and their journey comes with a dire warning--if they get on the train, they won't be getting off, at least not in this life. Then again, sometimes you have to get on to get off...

Midnight (Complete)

Into every generation a slayer is born, a chosen one.

That’s what the legend said. Sansa had heard it all before. What did the legend say about watchers then? Not much because it didn’t have to be spoken. Everyone just knew.

A slayer should never get involved with her watcher and certainly never fall for him.

No one asks to be chosen. No one seeks it out.

Home from war, Sandor Clegane wants nothing to do with the horrors he faced, least of all the black-eyed monsters that nearly took his life. He calls them demons. Others call them vampires. It doesn’t matter because he’s haunted by dreams he just can’t shake. In them, a red-haired girl fights the fiends alone.

Now letters are showing up at his door from a mysterious entity called the Watchers Council. They have a message for him—he has a calling and so does the girl in his dreams. Neither knows it, but they’ll soon find out…

Spellbound (Ongoing)

Brooklyn born and bred, NYPD homicide detective Sandor Clegane often joked that the only way he’d ever leave New York was in a body bag. His chief calls his bluff and details Sandor to some no-name town in Vermont. They need his no-bullshit approach to detective work. The real reason? He’s burnt-out, jaded, and surly.

His chief said the change of pace would do him good, but forgot to mention this sleepy town has a strange vibe. It also has Sansa Stark—hometown sweetheart and psychic who owns the metaphysical shop. Sandor doesn’t believe in that shit. What he does believe in—she has legs for days and an ass to match.

#unhallowedarts The Tale Of Lohengrin, Wagner and the Golden Age of Illustration

“Aye , quick it is with the seeds of

It was a knight in shining armour all right, albeit not white-steeded but pulled up the river Scheldt by a white swan, to save Elsa, ubiquitous damsel in distress, from dark Count Telramund’s cabal to usurp the Duchy of Brabant. In trial by combat, goes without saying, as it was the custom back in the days of King Henry the Fowler, which were at the turn of the 10th century when the place was part of the East-Frankish kingdom of Austrasia. Or so Richard Wagner would have it in his usually somewhat giddy take on Medieval epics and historical events. The valiant’s name, however, was Lohengrin, the one from Lothringen, Lorraine, obfuscating the man’s true origins: Lohengrin hailed from the grail castle Monsalvat, Wagner’s scene for “Parsifal” thirty years after “Lohengrin” premiered in Weimar in 1850.

Lohengrin’s mystical provenance is one of the arch-Romantic opera’s central motifs and, of course, the Germans have a word for it, “Frageverbot”, the forbidden question after the man’s origins, checking at least two of the “tall, dark, stranger” three boxes. Lohengrin is a luminous figure, but a rather sad one and the story ends in tears when the hero sails, swan-propelled, into the sunset after his work is done. Bitter, but Wagner and the zeitgeist wouldn’t have it any other way.

The tale of Lohengrin itself hails back to the High Middle Ages, honourably mentioned by Wolfram von Eschenbach in the early 13th century as Garin le Loherain in the minnesinger's “Parsifal”, gets two own contemporary verse epics and several variants of the swan knight theme over the next centuries until Wagner collected them all and crammed the rich material into his three hour opera, along with heroics from antiquity, elements that were perceived as Germanic paganism in the rather clouded view of the 19th century on Iron Age customs and beliefs and politics of Wagner’s own day when the Germans fought for their national unity. Along with romanticised Christian mysticism. Lohengrin is a grail knight, after all. And they do get properly married, Elsa and Lohengrin, to the sounds of “Here Comes the Bride”, no less, faithfully guided, “Treulich geführt” in Wagner’s original German from the opera’s libretto, a tune heard at the fabled joyous event across the globe ever since a Prussian royal wedding in 1858.

Wirkmächtig, efficacious, and if only for said tune, even if the topic borrowed from the old tale of Zeus and Semele, the metaphysic being hiding its true identity because the partner-to-be, as the saying goes, “can’t handle the truth” should raise every imaginable red flag, Romantic mystery or not. Even if Lohengrin reveals his true identity in the end, before his picturesque exeunt when the king calls to arms to make war against the pagan marauding Hungarians down South.

On that note, it is not without irony that Willy Pogany, born in 1882 in the back-then Austro-Hungarian city of Szeged, illustrated the tale of Wagner’s “Lohengrin” for Rolleston’s retelling with rich imagery that equals that of the better known Arthur Rackham’s of the “Ring” trilogy published around the same time. Pogany’s “Lohengrin” hit the booksellers’ shelves in 1911, along with “Parsifal” and “Tannhäuser”, when precious “gift books”, illuminated by the luminaries of the Golden Age of Illustration, were still all the rage as Christmas presents in a time when “education” was a hallmark of what passed as “better classes” back in the day.

Pogany, pronounced PO-gahn, immigrated to the US before the Great War turned the world upside down in Europe, after getting properly married in London, revealing his true identity from the very beginning, goes without saying. He continued to illustrate mainly children’s books and stuck to his Art Nouveau-influenced style that sometimes reminds of Edmund Dulac, albeit with stronger lines and expressions than the Anglo-French better-known master would come up with in his dreamy takes on often the same themes as Pogany took on.

“Think they’ll remember us when we’re gone?”

There’s a voice to your side, one sound reminding you that you’re not alone in this world. It’s hard to believe otherwise, the night is so dark that you can scarcely see your own hand in front of your face, but the voice is a strong enough anchor to drag you out of even the deepest of seas. There are few people who have such a powerful hold on you, but then again, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that Sirius Black is one of them.

He’s grinning at you now, you can see him cloaked in the few beams of moonlight daring to stray across your path at such an hour. Perhaps the crescent of white up ahead of you is ashamed of all the trouble you’d cause if she dared give you even a little more light, but just like you, she’s still unable to leave Sirius alone. Even in the dark, all finds him somehow, even the most reluctant of moonbeams.

That’s how it is to be around Sirius Black, after all, like being dragged into a whirlpool labeled with his name in messy scrawl. You don’t remember if you’d originally set out to be Sirius’ friend when you first arrived at Hogwarts, but staying away from him is a losing game, it always has been.

There is nobody at your school that could possibly leave Sirius be, nobody that matters. Even if they try to fight it, they’ll still end up around him, perhaps as an enemy or just a jealous watcher. Sirius is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, nor will you ever see again. Some part of you wonders how you’ll survive once you graduate, if leaving him behind will kill you once and for all. You’re almost certain that it will, which is why nights like tonight matter so much.

After all, graduation looms just around the corner, scarcely a few months away. It should scare you, you think, that after all these years kept safely in school you’ll have to brave the wild world outside the castle gates. In part, it does, but it also just seems like yet another game to play. That’s how this whole scene works, after all, it’s a damned game. That’s what Sirius taught you, but you taught him how to win.

Looking back on it, you’d certainly say that you’ve won. There’s hardly a person around here that doesn’t know your name, whether that’s for academic exploits or friendly hijinks. You’ve been a Marauder since the second you heard the title, and you can’t imagine a life without it, or without Sirius.

You can comfortably say that the Marauders would stay at their full power even if it was just you and Sirius fucking up the school by yourselves. In fact, you might even be worse than you are now. When you’re with Sirius, the brakes are nowhere in sight. The two of you go and go until the whole world lights up with flames, and even then, you just delight in the bright lights until your senses burn away.

That’s why the two of you are here now, after all, having snuck out of your dorms without even having to alert the other that the rendezvous would happen. You know Sirius like the back of your hand, and all it took was one look out your window at such a wonderful night to know instinctively that he would be out. You met him descending the staircase at the exact same time as you. His face had lit up in a moon-bright grin, and all thoughts of possible punishment for being out of bed after curfew had fled, if they’d ever been there at all.

It’ll drag you down eventually, you think, the rest of the world’s rules. You’ve been playing the game as you pleased for far too long, Sirius always by your side. He is a dizzying rush, your favorite boy, but all the best things come to an end eventually.

Sirius can feel it too, that’s why he’s asking you such a question. You turn over to look at him, and notice a furrow in his brow for the first time in quite a while. Usually, whenever he’s with you, Sirius can’t spare a second for his troubles. It seems as if tonight is the exception.

“Of course they’ll remember us, Sirius, we’ve made it quite hard to do anything else. If worst comes to worst, they’ll still see the cracks in the third floor tower and wonder who could have done such a thing, even without names to go with it.”

Sirius chuckles on instinct, remembering that day from long ago. The goal has always been to have pranks that aren’t quite so destructive, but that one had been an exception. No one had been hurt, but the third floor tower now looks like a grandmother with far too many wrinkles.

His face settles eventually, though, and you realize that he’s being honest. “It matters though, doesn’t it, to have our legacies stick around? I can’t imagine that we’ve spent all these years here just to disappear into history without a second thought.”

The two of you have been lying on the roof for quite some time, having snuck out of your dorms together. Sirius sits up now, dark hair settling back around his jawline. The moonlight doesn’t stick to him quite as well, but the shadows stay.

You sigh contemplatively and sit up as well. “It’s hard to judge that sort of thing. We’ll tell the stories if we have to, won’t we? Besides, Sirius, you’re not exactly the kind of person that people forget.”

It’s a little more true than you’d meant to say at such a late hour, but even in the dark Sirius still looks at you as if you’re all he’s ever needed, and it’s hard to keep your tone light in the face of such admiration. He seems pleased by it, anyway, if that’s any indication that you’re not messing up.

He cocks his head to the side, and you swear you can see his usual confidence collecting around him once more, covering up the seams and gaps that he’s always so careful to hide.

“What’s that mean, Y/N? You think I’m famous?” He asks.

You laugh, and Sirius lets his eyes flicker shut to best hear the sound ring around him. “Oh, that was never a question. I just mean that you’re good at all of this, you know. You’ve got your part and you play it. I don’t know how you manage to stay so delighted with life every day. ‘Course, I know you’re faking it half the time, but no one else does. How do you do it?”

Sirius climbs carefully over to you until you’re side by side again. The tower roof is cold this time of night, the lack of moonlight drenching you in chill, and you can’t help but lean closer to him for any kind of heat. Sirius notices, he always seems to pick up on your every movement. He takes the school robe off of his back without a second thought, draping it between the two of you.

His eyes still remain on you, and up close you’re able to see how quiet his entire face seems. It’s a treat to witness Sirius like this, when he’s not playacting as a constant entertainer. There is another boy deep within the facade, the kind of soul who’s sharper than a blade but never cuts you, who would spend the rest of his days with his friends if he wasn’t so worried that they’d tire of him. Appearance are everything to Sirius, he learned that from a young age, but all that’s taught you is how valuable it is to see him with all walls down.

“You,” he says simply, and you frown, confused.

“What do you mean?” You ask.

Sirius almost smiles, the corners of his lips fighting the urge to tug themselves up. “The reason I’m able to stay so vivacious all the time, it’s you. You make me feel alive, sweetheart. I thought that was obvious.”

You’re grateful for the dark, as it will hopefully cover up the heat currently rushing to your cheeks. The problem with forever being Sirius Black’s partner in crime is that it makes it awfully hard to stay impartial to his charms, especially when he does things like insist on trying out all of his pickup lines on you. You’ve been loving him for quite some time, even in the midst of exams and stress and pranks, but you’ve never dreamed that he could feel the same way.

After all, how could he? Half of Sirius’ allure is that he seems to be made of pure glass, all dazzling edges with absolutely nothing behind it. There’s a reason he was able to introduce you to the game of life, after all, he’s been playing it since the day he was born. Sirius has always been a contestant, the perfect actor. He is a perfect storm sweeping your sunny skies into ruin, but it’s always been a hair too perfect.

You’ve constantly been doubting yourself, reading too much into every line and hoping against hope that the smiles he shoots your way are anything other than practice. With each day’s heartbreak, however, you’ve learned to keep your skin thick. That means you’re afraid to take his words at face value, so you continue the act a little longer, just as you always do.

“I make you feel alive? That’s a dashing compliment, Sirius, but I’m looking for actual answers. Caffeine keeps James alive, for example, and sneaking out after hours works for me. What’s your secret?” You keep your tone neutral, allowing not a shred of hope be seen. It wouldn’t work for Sirius’ grand play, would it?

This rooftop must be messing with his head just as much as yours, though. When it’s the two of you, you’re never sure if he’s being real or just continuing the stage a little longer, but you swear that Sirius’ gaze is more true than you’ve ever seen.

“I’m being honest, Y/N.” Sirius rakes a hand through his hair, dislodging the raven strands yet again. His eyes are just as dark, but tonight they keep enough of the moonlight tucked away inside that you can see everything he’s begging you to understand.

You shiver slightly, and he pulls you closer to him. “Alright, then. I make you feel alive. Is it just my wonderful sense of humor? My incorrigible charm?”

Sirius grins in spite of himself. “I’d go for the fact that you’re the only one who really matters to me. No one else looks at the darkest night of the year and immediately thinks of me, you know. Not even James knows half as many of my habits as you.”

You can’t help feeling like you’ve passed some sort of test, or been able to achieve yet another rank in Sirius’ grand game. “You’re easy enough to know, Sirius. When you’re not doing your best to hide yourself away, that is.”

Arrested by some sort of impulse, Sirius stands, tugging you up with him. The wind has whipped against his cheeks, you notice, leaving them tinged with pink. Your fingers twitch at your sides, wanting nothing more than to brush your knuckles against his face and find out for certain whether it’s just as warm as yours seems to be.

His grin is just as electric as always. “See, that’s what I’m talking about. No one looks as hard as you do. No one ever has.”

Your breath catches in your throat. He’s trying to tell you something, you’re certain of it. It’s just that Sirius is how he has always been, never one to commit fully to a sentiment unless he’s certain that it will land just as he wishes it. That’s why he’s dragged you up here, isn’t it? So the two of you could be alone just before graduation and he could see if his hopes were just as real as yours.

“Your question earlier. You don’t care about the rest of the world, do you?” You breathe.

Sirius nods. Another successful turn, although the end of the game is getting closer, you can sense it. At any moment, he’ll play his ace. “Only you, love. Only you.”

You reach out and take his hand. It fits within yours perfectly, as if it were made only for you to hold it. After all these years, it feels like a conclusion written ages ago, the end to both of your stories, the one you’ve been waiting on for all eternity.

“It’s the same way for me, you know,” you manage, “I won’t ever forget you, Sirius Black. Just don’t give me a reason I could. Don’t you dare leave me lonely after we leave this school for good.”

Sirius’ eyes sparkle with hope. “Only if you’ll let me. They warned me about this, you know. I wasn’t supposed to tell you how I felt until after we graduated. No one dared mess up the Marauders, even with something as crushing as the fact that I loved you.”

You laugh at last, feeling your heart skip several beats. There’s the confession, there’s the twist you’ve been promised for so long. “The friend group will be fine, Sirius. I’m not letting anything come between the two of us.”

Sirius smiles too, although judging by the assuredness in which he swoops forward and presses a kiss to your forehead, he’s been wanting to do a lot more for a lot longer.

“We have all the time in the world, don’t we? Even after we leave.” He says.

You lean into him, then turn your head slightly so you can look out at the hills and dales of the landscape unrolling before you. The first strands of dawn are beginning to thread through the sky, weaving a new picture of bright colors and best promises. 

“That we do. We still have just enough time here for something special, though. So what do you say, Sirius? Shall we rock their worlds one last time?”

Sirius considers the sprawling grounds of the school beneath your feet, then twirls you lazily with your connected hands before kissing you once more. “I believe we shall. One more run, my love, and then we have the rest of time.”

Standing so close to Sirius with the weight of all your confessions keeping you warm, you don’t feel the chill of the night anymore, nor the ever pressing darkness. For once, you’re calm. The future has nothing to do but welcome you in. You can’t wait to see what happens now that you know that Sirius will stay by your side.

set  in  the  stranger  things  universe,  compliant  with  the  main  verse,  in  the  fact  that  the  addamses  move  towns  and  they  end  up  in  hawkins.

wednesday  remains  the  same,  she  still  has  her  psychic  abilities  although  they  don't  come  up  as  often.  instead,  she  does  dabble  in  magic,  particularly  black  magic.  she's  an  outcast  but  above  all,  she's  looking  for  trouble  just  as  trouble  is  looking  for  her.

this  being  said,  expect  wednesday  to  drag  your  muse  in  a  ton  of  shit.  whether  they  end  up  in  the  hawkins  laboratory  and  get  caught  or  they  end  up  in  jail.  the  addamses  will  bail  them  out,  no  worries.

HARRY  POTTER

set  in  the  harry  potter  universe,  both  marauders  era  and  the  golden  trio  era.  using  the  time  travel  device  she  can  travel  in  the  past  or  future  to  interact  with  muses  from  any  specific  era,  but  she  will  come  from  either  the  marauders  era  or  the  golden  trio  era.

wednesday's  a  halfblood  –  her  father's  a  muggle  and  her  mother's  a  brilliant  witch.  the  sorting  hat  puts  her  in  slytherin  because  of  her  pride,  self-respect,  resourcefulness  and  determination.  there  wasn't  a  single  doubt  as  the  hat  was  placed  on  her  head  in  her  first  year.

wednesday  isn't  a  villain  and  she  will  fight  only  for  what  she  wants  to.  meaning  she  wouldn't  participate  in  any  war  whatsoever  unless  someone  was  unjustifiably  harmed.  that  being  said,  she  would  kill  and  protect  anyone  she  deems  either  amoral  or,  on  the  contrary,  moral.

FANTASY

set  in  an  unnamed  fantasy  land,  does  apply  to  most  if  not  all  fantasy  multiverses  (game  of  thrones,  the  witcher,  elden  ring  etc.)  and  dungeons  and  dragons  storylines.  wednesday  is  by  default  30+  and  her  storyline  will  be  connected  with  the  other  muses  (@/prettybrawler's  caedmon  ;  @/kinghaargrove's  william  ;  @/eddie's  edward  ;  @/wheelrisms's  annette  ;  @/bbysttr's  stephan)

wednesday  has  inherited  visions  from  her  mother  and  she  is  an  oracle.  however,  she  is  possessed  by  an  unknown  spirit,  possibly  a  demon  (we  will  never  know…  or  do  we?),  so  expect  the  demon  to  slip  by  every  now  and  then.

the  spirit  is  a  trickster  and  will  try  to  mess  with  both  wednesday  and  your  muse.  this  is  supposed  to  make  the  interactions  interesting,  not  knowing  what  to  expect  next.  for  context,  think  of  this  spirit  as  the  symbiote  venom,  only  that  it's  less  funny  and  can  only  use  wednesday's  body  as  a  vessel.

THE  VAMPIRE  DIARIES

set  in  the  vampire  diaries  universe,  including  the  sequels  the  originals  and  legacies,  wednesday  is  born  and  raised  in  mystic  falls.  the  addamses  settled  in  around  the  same  time  mystic  falls  was  founded  (1800's).

the  addamses  are  considered  wizards  and  witches,  although  the  truth  is,  they  are  just  different.  meanwhile  it  is  interesting  to  delve  into  the  magical  potential  everyone  has  with  the  help  of  a  grimoire,  they  do  not  have  any  special  abilities.

wednesday  is,  therefore,  human.  she  does  like  to  mess  up  with  others  and  pretend  she'd  curse  people,  but  she  doesn't.  unless  someone  turns  her  into  a  vampire  /  werewolf  /  hybrid,  she's  a  mere,  sad  little  mortal.  she  does  know  how  to  fight,  but  she  doesn't  stand  a  chance  against,  let's  be  real,  99.9%  of  mystic  fall's  population  (meaning  only  matt  donovan  lmao)

SCREAM

set  in  the  scream  universe,  in  all  movie  settings,  the  addamses  are  your  friendly  neighbourhood  goths

one  branch  coming  from  the  main  verse,  in  which  the  addams  are  living  in  woodsboro.  keep  in  mind  that,  meanwhile  the  addamses  don't  have  any  magical  powers,  they  are…  not  innocent  by  far.  in  this  verse,  expect  to  see  the  murderous  tendencies  passing  down  from  generation  to  generation.

wednesday  is  just  like  any  other  young  adult,  only  that  she  supports  murder.  think  of  this  verse  wednesday  somewhat  as  what  morticia  could've  been  in  her  macabre  youth.  but  make  it  10x  worse  and  gore.

this  verse  will  contain  heavy  topics  such  as:  murders  mentions  and  depictions,  blood  minor  and  gore  depictions,  religious  cults  that  existed  in  real  life,  mentions  and  use  of  weapons.  this  verse  is  darker  than  the  others  and  wednesday  is  ultimately  a  villain  /  the  antagonist.

psa:  i  obviously  don't  condone  such  actions  nor  am  i  writing  this  out  of  pleasure.  i  did  however  study  deviance  and  criminality,  i  read  books  that  contain  actual  forensic  data  from  real  life  crimes  and  the  psychology  behind  a  criminal  is  something  i  would  like  to  explore  with  wednesday.  as  someone  who  wants  to  work  in  this  field  at  some  point,  i  feel  like  this  kind  of  portrayal  is  harmless  when  written  but  horrifying  to  put  into  action.  knowledge  does  not  equal  action,  so  all  actions  performed  by  wednesday  are  fictive.

DETECTIVE  AU

a  branch  from  the  main  verse,  in  which  wednesday  becomes  a  crime  detective  after  graduation.  she  doesn't  plan  on  working  for  the  state,  however  she  takes  the  matters  into  her  own  hands  and  she  has  become  a  private  investigator  focusing  on  crimes.

an  important  note  of  my  portrayal  is  that  wednesday  addams'  sole  purpose  is  to  go  against  the  system  that  has  failed  her  and  her  family;  therefore  she  detests  the  state,  the  government  and  would  rather  do  things  her  own  way.  that  was  the  whole  point  of  the  addams  family,  they  are  peculiar  and  are  treated  unfairly  by  society  –  even  if  they  mean  no  harm.

wednesday  can  get  tangled  up  in  any  kind  of  business  –  from  murders  to  theft  to  heists  to  supernatural  stuff.  she  doesn't  have  any  magical  powers  besides  her  intuition  which  was  hardly  laboured  throughout  her  life.  that  doesn't  mean  she  cannot  choose  the  wrong  thing,  she  will  make  lots  of  mistakes  and  others  will  suffer  from  it.

FEAR  STREET

set  in  the  fear  street  universe,  the  addamses  were  among  the  first  settlers  around  the  1600's.  they  were  considered  peculiar,  possible  practitioners  of  black  magic,  but  they  did  prove  to  be  helpful  in  their  community.

it's  unknown  whether  or  not  goody  addams  ever  met  solomon  goode,  however  she  did  lose  herself  in  the  magic.  this  verse  will  contain  topics  of  witchcraft  as  heard  in  the  eastern  european  rural  parts.  one  of  the  main  warnings  is  that,  when  someone  uses  magic  for  too  much,  even  if  it's  something  that  could  be  regarded  as  harmless,  it  can  taint  the  human  soul.  all  informations  about  witchcraft  in  all  my  verses,  but  particularly  this  one,  will  be  depicted  from  stories  or  experiences  i've  had  with  the  rroma  community  that  practises  magic.  i  am  aware  it  can  be  harmful  to  portray  rromani  heritage  in  this  matter,  but  where  i  come  from,  they  take  pride  in  what  they  can  do.  do  not  confuse  this  kind  of  magic  as  something  from  harry  potter,  curses  are  not  abracadabra  and  the  healing  spells  contain  religious  themes.

wednesday  and  pugsley  do  attend  the  camp  in  1976.  they  do  escape  the  gruesome  murders  not  because  they  were  lucky  enough  to  get  on  that  bus,  but  because  they  have  found  a  way  to  make  a  run  from  it  and  defy  what  their  parents  wanted.  this  is  considered  as  misfortune,  wednesday  believing  she  should've  been  there  (she  wouldn't  have  survived).

the  addamses  live  in  shadyside,  but  they  are  lucky  enough  not  to  have  inherited  money  from  their  ancestors,  unlike  the  other  shadysiders,  who  have  to  work  hard

once  again,  this  verse  is  heavily  influenced  by  societal  differences,  which  wednesday  doesn't  agree  with  one  bit.  for  the  sunnyvalers,  expect  a  very  judgemental  wednesday  in  all  interactions

UNHINGED  AU

this  is  one  true  alternative  universe,  something  i  have  thought  about  for  some  time.  in  this  verse,  wednesday  addams  has  a  different  take.  by  this  i  mean  that  she  dresses  up  normally  and  she's  a  very  bubbly  character  (how  do  you  even  write  'she  smiles'  ,  'she  laughs'  etc.???).  however  the  dark  subjects  still  apply!  wednesday  addams  may  look  like  any  other  young  woman  out  there,  but  she  does  talk  about  heavy  topics,  only  that  she  doesn't  take  them  seriously.

this  verse  is  probably  the  most  dangerous  wednesday  can  get,  after  the  scream  verse.  since  she  doesn't  acknowledge  the  severity  of  crimes,  she  doesn't  think  twice  about  doing  something  she  shouldn't.  despite  her  appearance,  she  is  chaotically  evil.

think  about  this  verse  as  barbie  goes  rogue  but  she  keeps  the  barbie  appearance.

OC Sheet: Hûra Marrow Seer

There was something about him, from the day he was born. The elders of the Dark tribe couldn’t place it, but as he clearly struggled fitting into the normal structure of the clan, it became apparent that he didn’t belong. When he flew into hysterics as the clan butcher dismembered a caragor carcass, the elders started to look for an out.

They couldn’t simply kill the pup, nor could they blatantly send him to his death. Luckily for the clan, lads from the Mystic tribe offered to buy the pup for a few cases of much needed grog. The elders agreed without a second thought; needed supplies in exchange for one less useless mouth to feed? How could they refuse?

Even though the transaction broke the pup’s heart, his new clan welcomed him with open arms. ‘They don’t understand you like we do. You have a gift! A gift that they squandered. We’ll make something truly impressive out of you, yet.’

The pup will give his heart and soul to his new clan. Since his own blood didn’t want him, he’ll do anything to keep his new family’s eye focused squarely onto him and him alone, no matter who, or what, stands in his way.

Appearance

Long, thick and black hair (greying slightly later in life)

*the length of his hair varied throughout his life, but never shorter than his mid back for long

Wears kohl face paint

Skin is a light, almost sickly grey. Very little pigment

Eyes are clear and amber in colour, with white sclera and slit pupils

Hands and fingers are covered in scars

Claws grown long and sharpened to a curved point, then hardened with pitch resin (that stains his fingers black)

Scarred lips from constantly biting them

Born

In the caverns of Cirith Ungol

Originally in the Dark tribe, then the Mystic, then tribe-less (unofficially adopted by a Marauder)

Occupation

Osteomancer

Reads the cracks and imperfections in bones. Fire sometime included, but not often

His personal bones are from a hawk that was his first kill

Secretly likes shiny things

Has a blood brother/husband

Pathfinder 2e - Nure-Onna

The Nure-Onna is a monster in the game Nioh 2 and it looks a bit like this.

They have a rather distinctive fighting style and they're fairly difficult if you're not used to them, moving about in hard to manage ways.

So, I'm going to do a 1-20 build of a character like this in Pathfinder 2e. I've messed with this a little bit, finding out you could make this sort of character by accident. Some things I'm going to put on priority:

The paralyzing stare (actually, I can get a legitimate petrification ability)

The association with water.

The forceful attacks and focus on grappling.

I'll try to work in the thing with the darts, but not sure I'll be able to make it. I could try for the whipping hair, but I think that would requiring taking a dedication into Witch and I'd rather keep the Feats.

Reasoning: Song of the Deep gives the ability to breathe water, Water Nagaji gives a Swim Speed. Water Nagaji also gives Breath Control which seems extraneous when she can breathe water, but it's useful against gas too. I originally opted for Gorilla Stance and while it points to the raw strength of the attacks, it also limits to only the gorilla slam attacks. Also, just the name evokes what I'm thinking of.

Performance is just for fun due to a bit of art a friend of mine shared me. Not familiar with the artist, so won't place it here.

2nd Level

Class Feat: Crushing Grab

Skill Feat: Slippery Prey

So she can do damage in a grapple and also avoid being grappled.

3rd Level

Skill Increase: Athletics

General/Skill Feat: Titan Wrestler

Mystic Strikes

Incredible Movement

So she can grapple bigger things.

4th Level

Class Feat: Ki Rush

Skill Feat: Underwater Marauder

Ki Spells: Occult

For more movement options. Underwater and speed in general. Went with occult because yokai feel more like something on the darker side.

5th Level

Ancestry Feat: Serpent's Tongue

Skill Increase: Stealth

Ability Boosts: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence

New Skill Training: Diplomacy

Alertness

Expert Strikes

6th Level

Class Feat: Ki Blast

Skill Feat: Assurance: Athletics

Well, so, with Ki Blast basically lets me do the dart volley. (Though it doesn't have the paralytic aspect of the attack in the video game) Assurance Athletics to make her attempts to grapple and trip more reliable.

7th Level

General/Skill Feat: Wall Jump

Skill Increase: Athletics

Path to Perfection: Fortitude

Weapon Specialization

More proficiency with Athletics, better Fortitude saves and more movement.

8th Level

Class Feat: Dragon Stance

Skill Feat: Quick Squeeze

Ability to get through tight spaces quicker and another stance to use when I need it. Also, this will be interesting later.

9th Level

Ancestry Feat: Serpentine Swimmer

Skill Increase: Intimidation

Metal Strikes

Monk Expertise

Faster swimming and scarier.

10th Level

Class Feat: Dragon's Roar

Skill Feat: Say that Again!

Ability Boosts: Exterity, Constitution, Wisdom, Charisma

An intimidating roar appropriate to the Nure-Onna from the game, an ability to punish someone trying to scare you.

11th Level

General/Skill Feat: Battle Cry

Skill Increase: Intimidation

Path to Perfection: Reflex

Another scary scream and increased scariness.

12th Level

Class Feat: Flurry of Maneuvers

Skill Feat: Quick Climb

A quick ability to climb. Flurry of Maneuvers lets her do grapples and trips for Flurry of Blows.

13th Level

Ancestry Feat: Disruptive Stare

Skill Increase: Acrobatics

Graceful Mastery

Master Strikes

The acrobatics helps her move better and the disruptive stare lets her interfere with enemy spellcasters.

14th Level

Class Feat: Winding Flow

Skill Feat: Too Angry to Die

Too Angry to Die basically describes a lot of yokai, and Winding Flow is more movement.

15th Level

General/Skill Feat: Feather Step

Skill Increase: Athletics

Ability Boosts: Strength, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom

Path to Perfection: Will

Greater Weapon Specialization

Her Athletics is now Legendary, which means she now has a Climb speed through Quick Climb and she can step into difficult terrain.

16th Level

Class Feat: Medusa's Wrath

Skill Feat: Terrified Retreat

This completes the list of things she can do with gazes and people will flee from her as well.

17th Level

Ancestry Feat: Venom Spit

Skill Increase: Intimidation

Adamantine Strikes

Graceful Legend

And this gives us the ability to have the poison spit ability from the Nure-Onna (could have taken this a while ago, but it was low on priority). And now she's legendary in Intimidation.

18th Level

Class Feat: Diamond Fists

Skill Feat: Skeptic's Defense

Diamond Fists increases the amount of damage she can do while Skeptic's Defense can punish casters trying to scare her.

19th Level

General/Skill Feat: Scare to Death

Skill Improvement: Stealth

Perfected Form

20th Level

Class Feat: Fuse Stance: Dragon+Reflective Ripple - Nure-Onna

Skill Feat: Swift Sneak

Ability Boosts: Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma

So, this is why I wanted both Dragon and Reflective Ripple Stance, the 20th level Class Feat allows for fusing their benefits into a single form. And now she scan sneak very quickly.

I'm sure I have some inefficiencies in here since I'm new to the game, but I was building more toward flavor.
