Spider-Man: MJ Rescue in No Way Home Was Originally Much Better
While No Way Home sees Garfield's Spider-Man physically reach and catch MJ, offering cathartic redemption for his earlier failure, Spider-Man goes one further by putting Peter in exactly the same situation as with Gwen - depending on his webs to save the day.

lets talk: A DARK AGE
link to the first teaser
okay so i am so excited to be able to share even the smallest portion of this story with you guys! i’ve been working on the concept and plot of A Dark Age for months now, and i’m so glad to finally have enough to begin sharing it with you guys!
A Dark Age was inspired by the idea offered in No Way Home where Andrew’s!Peter discusses how after Gwen’s death he stopped “pulling his punches”. ever since watching NWH that thought stuck with me, the concept of an angry, bitter, and dark Spider-Man. i spent more time than i’d care to admit thinking about it and ultimately all of those thoughts led to the plot of A Dark Age.
There are three different aspects to the teaser; a newspaper article from The Daily Globe, a tiny portion of the opening bit of the actual story, as well as a video.
The article from the Globe not only has an actual role in the fic, but it’s also my way of introducing part of the plot and letting you all see what’s happening in the beginning of the story. there are several important details in the newspaper! and all of them are central to the plot. this is also not the only newspaper article i’ve made for this story, as the articles play a large role.
The portion of the opening was chosen for the teaser because it introduces a few central ideas to the reader. it lightly discusses the sense unrest settling over New York and gives you a sliver of insight into the readers role in all of this.
The video is something i made solely because the scene that dialogue comes from is perhaps my favorite thing i’ve ever written. it’s short and to the point, but offers you a chance to experience this new side of Peter Parker, of a darker Spider-Man. our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is gone, and in his place appears to be something slightly more sinister.
working on A Dark Age has become a huge passion of mine and i truly can’t wait to share it. even if no one ever reads it, it will still probably be one of my favorite things i’ve ever created. aside from just wanting to explore a dark!Spider-Man concept, i’ve always wanted to create something that allows me to envision what could’ve been after the events of tasm2, and A Dark Age has granted me that! this story doesn’t only follow a grief-stricken Peter Parker, but it also explores the horrors of Ravencroft, introduces characters like Mary Jane Watson (check the newspaper for a hint to her role, also consider the importance of it being the daily globe and not the bugle), while also fixing the storylines of other characters previously ignored or mistreated by the writers, such as Harry Osborn.
if you have any questions or comments then please feel free to send them in or leave them on this post or even the teaser post! overall, i’m just in love with this world i’m creating and wanted to start sharing it with you guys as i finish getting it ready to be posted!

Dude, I Love Fishing
Tumblr media
A few days off between comeback stages and your boyfriend wants to go fishing, he's pretty lucky you love him.
pair: Yunho x Reader
w/c: 1.3k
a/n: Just another fluffy Yunho one-shot, also the number of times I accidentally deleted this post while editing is embarrassing, anyways I hope you guys enjoy it!!! Any feedback is appreciated, and any interactions are welcomed and loved! Also ironically the use of a Seventeen song has no correlation with my recent dive into them. Also I definitely did not take or make any of the photos just used them for the header....that I did make....Okay enjoy!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Comeback season was rough, between recording, rehearsals, outfits and fittings, photoshoots, stage testing, and shooting music videos, promos, teasers, and doing interviews…you could say it’s a full time job. Yeah, comeback season was rough, Comeback season for Ateez? Never stops, with the boys getting bigger and better every comeback it was hard to get them to sit still for even a moment, not that they would, it’s like babysitting hyperactive 3 year olds who just got told it was nap time but they “don’t need a nap they can stay up forever.” but probably less spit and more “you’re not the boss of me.”
“Wooyoung in this moment I very much AM the boss of you.” I groaned trying to get him to stop so I could hear the directions the GPS was taking us. “Do you want to get lost?!”
“We’re in Seoul! We can’t possibly get lost!” he threw his hands up in the air.
“And you know Seoul well enough that if I turn off this GPS you can get us there On Time?” I raised my eyebrow and he looked out the window. “That’s what I thought.”
“I can-!” he started
“Wooyoung-ah, please don’t torture my poor girl, I do that enough at home.” Yunho spoke up from the middle row.
“EWWWW!” came a chorus of voices.
“Not like that!!!!” he waved his hands in front of his face.
“Even I knew that one was coming Yu.” I sighed now on the receiving end of questions of my personal life.
His torture by the way is the sweaty hugs after dance practice before he showers because he just can’t wait that long to hug me, the way he lays on top of me while watching tv or a movie and I mean FULL BODY WEIGHT almost like that scene from Disney’s Lilo and Stitch where Nani goes “Oh no gravity is increasing on me!” only he does it because it’s “much more comfortable”, the endless times he’s had me read the Spider Man comics to him because he likes the character voices I make, not to mention we’ve seen every version a few times. He’s decided to cook dinner a few times only he’s wanted to experiment and try things without a recipe, which is fine, but it’s always stuff he’s never tried making before, last time he mixed up sugar and salt….again….Yeah, I would say he puts me through a few trials at home….I wouldn’t change them, in fact I kind of miss it when he’s away on tour and I’m stuck back home.
“y/n!?” Yunho called out from the kitchen. Here comes the soup popsicles again…
“Yeah?” I sighed and put down my book.
“We should take a trip!” he announced coming into the room. “Why are you closing your eyes with your hand out?”
“Huh? Oh uh….nothing. A trip? What kind?”
“Let’s go to the lake! We can go fishing! Bring the guys along and everything!”
“Fishing? Yunho you know I don’t like fishing, it’s…hard (weird)”
“Oh come on Jagiya, pleaseeeee, it’ll be like a beach trip or something, water, swimsuits, picnic!”
I sighed. “Fine.”
It was in fact, NOT like the beach, I’m covered head to toe in waterproof clothing, the most shapeless pair of waterproof overalls or waders, wellingtons, a vest with way too mant pockets, a floppy hat, and a waterproof shirt…oh and a life vest.
“You look beautiful” he smiled, I took a photo as he put on his life vest.
“You look ridiculous.” I chuckled at his outfit, it was normal…save for the Spider-man life jacket that was too small…
~~~~
“Yunho that’s for kids…” I said as we browsed our local Department Store.
“Nuh uh!!” he shook his head and smiled. “It says 5 plus y/n! I’m plus! I’m over 5!”
“I’m starting to doubt that.” I mumbled as I put it in the cart.
“Aw no way!!! Jagiya!” he called from behind me.
I turned and nearly fell over laughing, he found a pair of wayyyy too small goggles as well, he looked like one of those watermelons with rubber bands stretched around it until they burst.
“Yu, you’re gonna hurt yourself if you get those.” I snorted…never did that in my last relationship.
~~~~~
“Well good thing I don’t have to impress anyone then hmm?” he gave me that face. “Come on I’ll catch the best fish for us to eat tonight.”
“We could’ve just gone to the store.”
“But this way it’s a date.”
“Grocery shopping is a date.”
“Okay fine you got me there.” he smiled. “But it’s nice to get some fresh air during comeback season!”
“Yu….it smells like mud…”
“Earth! I love it!” he smiled. “Come on I figure we can try the boat first.”
How did I let him talk me into this?
“Yunho?”
“Hmm?” he turned towards me.
“How much longer are we going to be out here?” I looked at him. “We’ve been out here for hours already.”
“Until you catch one too.”
“I’m fine not catching one.” I chuckled. He’s caught 5…who knew he was so good at it.
“Maybe if you don’t catch one in an hour.”
“Okay, fair enough.”
We waited…he started humming….it sounds kind of familiar.
“생각처럼 쉬운 게 없네요
매일 생각해요 난 어떻게 해야 할지
도착했다 싶을 때, 다시 시작이네요
앞이 깜깜할 때도” Yunho hummed softly.
“Whatcha singing?” I looked at him.
“Just something stuck in my head.” he smiled.
“소용돌이치는 하루 속에
사소한 행복을 나에게 줘서
비어 있는 내 두 손에
세상의 모든 미소를 쥐여줘서”
“Seventeen?” I raised an eyebrow as he got louder.
He started swaying a little.
“Yunho be careful, you’re rocking the boat.” I looked at him….it was too late.
“소용돌이치는 하루 속에
사소한 행복을 나에게 줘서
비어 있는 내 두 손에
세상의 모든 미소를 쥐여줘서
가파른 길에 숨이 찰 때도
추운 날 길 잃은 때도
따듯한 온기와 함께 손을 내밀어주는!!!” he exclaimed standing up and what do you know the boat tipped over. “YUNHO!”
I broke the surface of the water.
“You owe me a new phone.” I looked at him after we swam back to the shore with the boat.
“Gladly.” he smiled and wrapped a towel around me still humming.
“You’re lucky I love you.” I huffed.
“I’m very lucky indeed.” he kissed my cheek but grimaced at the taste left on his lips.
“Yeah let me guess I taste how the lake smells?”
“No no just a piece of algae in my mouth…”
“I don’t believe you.” I sighed and we made our way to go get cleaned up and the boathouse.
“You know what they say, shower together and save water.”
“Are you seriously horny after tipping the boat over into a fish pond…and there’s mud in my hair?”
“What can I say…the mud really adds texture.” he chuckled.
“New phone and a new boyfriend.” I nudged him.
“Awwwwww come on.”
After I took my shower…alone. We sat on the deck to eat the lunch/dinner we brought along. I didn’t catch a single fish, I got knocked out of the boat and I lost my phone….
“You didn’t catch a fish but you caught one thing?”
“....yeah?” I looked at him knowing it was going to be bad.
“This boot!” he held up the waterlogged boot I got before he knocked us over dancing.
“I totally thought you were going to say ‘My Heart’” I laughed a little.
“Nah, you caught that a long time ago.” he smiled and pushed my wet hair behind my ear.
“You’re so annoying Jeong Yunho.”
“And you are the light of my life l/n f/n……D.I.L.F” he spelled out.
I spit. “What!?”
“Dude I Love Fishing!” he smiled and looked at me.
“Yunho! That’s not what that means!!!!” I laughed and hit his arm.
As we walked back to the car Yunho held up the boot again.
“Should we-”
“No we are not keeping the boot.” I chuckled. “We can get matching phone cases this time.”
“Well I am keeping you, so I guess I win.” he smiled. “Can I pick out the phone case?”
“Fine…you win.”
I am never going fishing again.
Spider-Man: Homesickness
M | 20 Chapters | CW: Graphic Depictions of Violence | Five years after No Way Home The week that Peter finally learns to let people in again, despite kicking and screaming the whole way
READ CHAPTER 14 HERE
Teaser below the cut
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Shit,” he whispers to himself. Okay. Okay.
He kicks the half-open first aid kit under his bed and tugs on his quilt until it’s haphazardly hanging to block the view.
He hears a familiar voice, muffled and hushed through the door. “Maybe this isn’t the best-”
Ned.
“Oh shush,” another voice says. “Trust me.”
Gwen.
Fucking hell.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gwen calls through the door, “Peter, open this goddamn door. I know you’re home.” There’s a playful edge to her voice like she’s smiling.
He forcibly drops his shoulders from his ears and takes in a deep breath, holding it in his chest until it burns before releasing it. With one more passing glance around his spartan apartment, he hopes he’s not missed anything that blatantly screams ‘I’m Spider-Man!’
Wrenching the door open with more force than necessary, he says, “What do you want, Gwen?”
Before he can blink, Gwen barrels past him and into the apartment. Her arms are full of a stack of several pizza boxes that waft cheesy deliciousness into the room. “Hello to you too, asshole. Maybe think about texting me back, for once in your life.” She sets the boxes down on his kitchen counter and turns around to lean against the edge, watching him with a smile.
Left stranded by her, Ned and MJ stand awkwardly in the hallway. MJ’s arms are also laden with full bags of something, while Ned is carrying a whole TV screen and a black rolling container, not unlike a suitcase.
MJ seems to shake off the tension first, raising her gaze to meet his, steady. She ducks around Ned and through the doorframe past Peter, offering a quiet, “Hey, loser,” as she kicks off her shoes by the door. She follows after Gwen and sets her bags down on the small square of counter left, quickly pulling out drink bottles and snack bags.
Peter tips his head back and stares at the ceiling, wondering how the hell his life could get any more complicated.
Ned shuffles his feet, adjusting his grip on the TV screen. “I told you, man, they were planning something.” He gives Peter a sheepish, lopsided grin. “You can’t fight it. It’s no use.”
Peter sighs and scrubs his hand over his face. “Yeah, alright. Come in, I guess. Welcome to my… apartment.” Not home. Never home. He holds the door open wide so that Ned can pass through without bumping the screen and shuts it behind him with a shove, wincing at the scraping shriek as the door and the frame scrape against each other. The hot, humid, summer air always makes the wood swell.
Gwen is leafing through his cabinets, pulling out plates and glasses. She doesn’t bat an eye at the fact that none of them match and most of them are chipped or scratched.
Ned immediately makes his way over to the far side of the room next to Peter’s threadbare, polyester couch from the 1980s. He found it on the curb last year and only brought it up here once he realized that it would be great for blocking out the chill that leaks through the window during the winter.
Peter leans his back against his door, unsure of his place amongst the chaos. “Okay, I’m going to try this again. How the hell do you know where I live? And why are you here?”
“We’re here to hang out, obviously,” Gwen replies, still focused on rifling through his cabinetry.
“Right.”
She closes one of the cabinet doors a little too firmly and runs a hand through her hair with mild frustration. “From what I’ve heard, you had a rough morning,” she says pointedly, catching his gaze and holding it. “And while Harry and MJ are busy at The Tower, helping good ol’ Norman recover from that disaster of a press conference, I thought we could bring the party to you here, instead.”
He winces, clearing his throat in an effort to hide it. “Yeah, I, uh- I saw something about that.”
“Yep,” she replies, popping the ‘p.’ “But they can handle themselves, today. I thought it would be good to give you some company. And maybe some fun. Hence…” She waves her hand vaguely in Ned’s direction.
“Don’t take all the credit,” MJ cuts in. She pours a glass of something sweet, bubbling, and smelling of citrus.
“I’m not,” Gwen protests. “I’m just explaining why the ambush.”
Peter says, “So you admit it’s an ambush. Cause I gotta say I’m feeling a little on the back foot, right now.”
“After all the ups and downs this week, Gwen wanted to do something to surprise you. She said that you need to learn to relax and take a step back from work,” MJ says. She gives Gwen a look like there’s more to the story, but Gwen purposefully avoids eye contact. “So Ned brought everything he would need to set up his TV and Switch here since we weren’t sure what you might already have.”
“I hope you like Mario Kart,” Ned calls over his shoulder as he continues to set everything up.
Sacred New Beginnings (MJ/Gwen)
Summary: MJ has a bunch of hang-ups she initially isn’t aware of. Gwen falls in love with a girl she meets in class on a Thursday morning in September.
Set almost a year after Spider-Man: No Way Home. MJ is a freshman at MIT, where she meets a version of Gwen Stacy. Canon-compliant all the way up to the end of NWH and the scene at the café when Peter chooses not to reintroduce himself to MJ.
Rating: M
Length: 12k (5 chapters + an epilogue)
Key tags: romance, fluff, hurt/comfort, memory loss trauma, memory recovery, Spider-Gwen, Peter Parker cameo
It comes with a playlist! (Actually, it technically comes with two!)
Find it on ao3.
---
Notes: In August 2022, I found myself the tiniest fandom niche and made myself at home (made myself a home) for over a year.
This story was inspired by three things: 1) The question of what the consequences of memory magic messing with your brain would be (If MJ remembers Peter, how would that go?), 2) MJ's tearful face at the end of NWH (and my brain going, she deserves to be happy and safe!), and 3) my reaction* to the scene in the Across the Spider-Verse teaser when Gwen asks, "Wanna get out of here?" before she drops out of the window.
(*That girl isn't straight!)
This isn't a No Way Home/Spider-Verse crossover, though.
So I just finished Loki, and I think I know where the MCU is going. This is going to sound like a wild conspiracy theory, but if it happens, Avengers 5 and 6 will make Endgame look tiny in comparison.
Spoilers ahead for any and all Kang related developments, as well as some Spider-Man stuff.
The groundwork so far:
Loki season one ended with the reveal of He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror who stopped all the other Kang variants from existing by erasing the multiverse. He did this to prevent a war between the Kang variants that would cause all universes to explode or something. Ominous and spooky!
He dies and the multiverse happens, meaning the Kang war is going to happen, and it's going to happen soon.
Then Spider-Man no way home happened and Spidey and Dr Strange messed around in the multiverse. We'll come back to this.
Now I thought the show What If? was supposed to offer a teaser for the Kang War.
Tumblr media
For those of you who skipped it, What If? takes us on a trip through the multiverse, showing us new takes on beloved characters. These included Peggy Carter but as a super soldier, Dr Strange but as an eldritch horror, and Thor but as a frat bro.
I figured the Kang War would follow our typical MCU cast that we all know and love and then these guys swoop in and help stop the bad guys in a big climactic moment, like the "on your left" in Endgame. I don't think that's the case anymore. And it's all thanks to one small line of dialogue at the very end of Loki season 2.
At the very end of Loki season 2, the TVA is restructured to be on the lookout for variants of Kang. One of the workers said a variant was sighted near the 616 branch. That is the single line that made everything click.
For those unaware (like I was when I first heard the line, I did a bit of research before writing all this out!), the MCU used to be branch 199999 of the multiverse, but has recently been renamed to branch 616. 616 is also the branch of the main comic universe, which essentially separates the two multiverses indefinitely. But that is actually a genius move, one that lets the films build their own multiverse without needing to worry about prior lore from the comics. And What If? is only a small sampling of what that multiverse has to offer.
Tumblr media
No Way Home! I told you we'd come back to it. This one film has been the biggest project to flesh out the MCU multiverse. We all thought it was fan service, but we couldn't see the big picture yet.
The climax of the film involves the Spider-Man from Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films and the Spider-Man from the Amazing Spider-Man films coming into the MCU 616 universe to help MCU Spidey fight his villains. This explicitly connects these three franchises into the same multiverse! But it doesn't stop there! The end credits scene (as well as Morbius' end credits scene) connected it to Sony's Venom-verse! That's four franchises that the Kang War can pull from, but it's going to be even bigger!!
Tumblr media
There's one small throwaway line in Across the Spider-Verse that connects the Spider-Verse films to the MCU. Miguel O'Hara complains about the various things going wrong across the Spider-Verse, including "Dr Strange and that nerdy kid from Earth 199999". Earth 199999 is the old name for the MCU. Miguel is upset over the events of No Way Home.
Tumblr media
We could see some (or all) of these Spideys could show up in the Kang War. Tell me that wouldn't be way cooler than anything Endgame did!
I don't think it will stop there either! I remember one project really stood out to me when they were announcing their phase five and six plans for the MCU.
Tumblr media
The first X-Men project in the MCU, and it's a continuation of a thirty year old cartoon. Plus, they greenlit it for a second season before the first was even released. X-Men are the fourth best selling single issue comic series of all time (behind Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman), making them a huge IP. Making their first project in the MCU something as niche as this feels like a slight misstep. Unless, this project is aiming to tie the original cartoon into the multiverse, letting these versions of the X-Men fight in the Kang War. I guess we'll find out when the show debuts in a few months.
There's also one more thing that they could possibly tie in, that I don't think they will.
Tumblr media
I don't think they'll actually do it, but it would be really really funny if they did.
(Also Insomniac's Spider-Man games complicate this whole thing a lot, but I've already wrote way too much so I'll cover that in a future post if this one does well)
I Think I Need a Sunrise, I'm Tired of the Sunset
Teaser: Out there, leaking through those gaps in the curtain, is the sun, the world, the life I thought I might never get to see. A life I’m only just lucky enough to be facing now. I want to be thrilled, I want to feel safe, I want to be grateful. One thought, however, beats me black and blue from the inside.
Bree
When Spider—no, her name is Colette, what a beautiful name—disappears, I leave Jamie to talk with Allan, who is skittish now about a million different things. About making the musket wound worse; about the constables coming after him, too; about the fact that he inadvertently joined a gang in his act of betrayal against Bulwell, Hatchett, Michaelson, and the rest; and probably about more stealthy intruders sneaking in through his window to threaten him with a knife.
I suppose I can’t blame him.
Silently, I leave them to argue about whether Jamie should take whatever tincture Allan gave him earlier, something to dull his senses and ease his pain. Jamie is staunchly trying to refuse it, insisting he doesn’t want to be unconscious or out of it when he and Will are reunited. So far, he is winning that dispute, but Allan seems confident he will prevail in the end—once Jamie actually tries to move and fully understands what it feels like to pull on the musket wound. I hope Allan does get his way, because every time I look at Jamie, I cringe, remembering what I said and wondering why I decided to say it, and every time he looks at me, I can’t imagine his thoughts are very charitable.
Trying to forget for a just a few moments how exhausted—and embarrassed—I am, I curl up by the front window, relishing the sliver of light that peeks through Allan’s drawn curtains. The rain, it seems, has stopped now, and some tenacious streak of sunlight has managed to break through the earlier clouds. The gentle light is comforting, but not enough to calm me. To caln the frantic fluttering of my heart and the churning of my stomach and the boiling in my chest at the thought of what comes next.
Reunited. Altogether. Off to Colette’s family home, to the others, to Will.
The curtains are old, tattered at the bottom and moth-eaten throughout. The longer I sit there, trying to even my breath, I find more ragged holes letting in the fading light. I count them—One. Two. Three. On and on.
Out there, leaking through those gaps in the curtain, is the sun, the world, the life I thought I might never get to see. A life I’m only just lucky enough to be facing now. I want to be thrilled, I want to feel safe, I want to be grateful. One thought, however, beats me black and blue from the inside.
I don’t belong here.
It’s true, isn’t it? When Jamie, Colette, Geoff, and I were united with the common goal of getting Will out of prison, our alliance made perfect sense. Their family was torn apart, and I was able—I wanted—to help in reuniting them.
Now, in a few short hours—if that—their family will be stitched back together; perhaps the threads are a little frayed, perhaps some repairing needs to be done, but they’ll be whole again.
They don’t need me anymore, and more than that, why would they want me? I am the one who just tried to pick a fight with a wounded man, hours after he almost died, over something that didn’t even have to do with me. I am the one who brought Hatchett right to that cabin in the woods and nearly ruined things for everyone. I am the one who gave Hatchett the bit of information he needed to see through Will’s lies.
Jamie needed me to get Will, then Will needed me to get Jamie, and now Colette will bring them together, and perhaps it’s best for everyone that my presence is no longer needed at all.
Of course, I heard what she said—that Allan and I should both go as well. Never mind that it was an afterthought, something blurted out after she barely even looked at me. It’s more than that. Something about the very idea threatens to splinter me into pieces.
Throwing myself upon the mercy of these strangers—the thought makes my skin crawl. For so long I just had myself; I didn’t need to rely on the charity of others. If I go with Colette, though, I will owe her for her kindness, when I’ve only just repaid Will and Jamie for saving me. I’m not sure I want another debt hanging over my head.
It’s mostly that single prickling thought, though: there’s no real reason for me to stay. Whether I’m here or not, their lives will heal. Go back to the way they were before Will was caught. For them, each new day will dawn kinder and gentler and happier than the one before, until the darkness of our time in prison is nothing more than a tragic memory.
To know that I was only ever a side character in the story of these brothers, to accept that Baden Hatchett’s words are once again true—You aren’t important to them, either—threatens to leave a hole in my heart.
Not long after my father died, a few days at most, when he was cold and buried and finally, finally, out of my life, a man named Baden returned to keep his word—a promise that had been made long ago, when things were different. When my family still had money. When I was still a respectable girl. He looked at me with distaste, but at the time, at least, he was willing to hold himself to the agreement he’d made.
“We’ll wed next week,” he said. “You will come with me.”
Next week? I had just escaped from under Father’s thumb; now here was Baden Hatchett, ready to crush me beneath his.
“I’d rather wait,” I said. “It’s too fast. Too early. I…”
He scoffed. “That isn’t for you to decide.”
“What do you mean, it’s not for me to decide? How—”
Even now, I can still hear some of what he said in answer. How dare you argue with me? Don’t you know your place? You think you have any say in this? You know I’m doing you a favour, right? You understand that? You’re the one who needs me. I don’t need you.
Only once did he touch me after my father’s death—just a hand wrapped around my arm as he ordered me out of the shabby apartment where Father had died and into his home. That grip, the first shackle he ever locked me into—it was a message, a reminder that I was his and would remain so until I was dead. Later, upon my skin, I found bruises in the shape of fingerprints, purple and throbbing.
It was nothing less than hatred that fuelled every step that night when I crept from the house, never to return. I slid along the floor in stocking feet, terrified of every floorboard and how it creaked, the bolt and how it scraped, my breath and how it gasped loud enough to fill the air, my heart and how it pounded in my chest, threatening to shake his home to rubble.
Perhaps it was luck, perhaps fate, perhaps a goddamn miracle. He heard nothing. He slept through my escape, and I made it outside. It was out of spite as much as precaution that I left the front door wide open, an invitation for moths and spiders and rats, for some other unfortunate creature to invade his house and take my place as some spineless, obedient thing that he could squash beneath his boot.
Today, however…
It isn’t hate, I think, that fuels this escape. In fact, it is perhaps something quite the opposite.
James Wardrew falls asleep while he waits, senses dulled and pain softened in the wake of the doctor’s victory, and Allan Armstrong Dale busies himself with choosing which possessions he wishes to bring into his new life as an outlaw—as he now wryly calls himself. While they are both distracted, I pinch a pen and some paper from Allan’s desk. He’s got an odd assortment of things strewn across its disorderly surface: coins and sheets of music and buttons and other bits, too, that might be of some value, at least. Surely things he will not miss.
My cruel, wicked imagination whispers things to ink onto the page. I should free these sentiments today, it murmurs, so I can live my life without the stinging regret of things unsaid. If I immortalize my thoughts on this page, if I say what’s in my heart, Will Wardrew might look back at them and remember me without disgust or hurt or betrayal. At the very least, maybe he will remember me with a sense of peace.
Maybe he will remember me as I will remember him.
It whispers to me that I should tell him he was the only thing that made my prison cell bearable. Tell him, it murmurs, how you fear Hatchett will never give up. Tell him that you don’t want another constable to lay hands on him ever again.
Tell him, it hisses. That I don’t want him to have to look at my face and remember every moment of suffering he went through with me. Because of me.
That I wish him health and happiness.
Tell him how you get a peculiar feeling at the thought of never seeing him again. Tell him that it makes leaving so much harder. Tell him that strange feeling is why you must leave. Tell him this is for the best.
In the end, I write very little.
In the end, it is mostly an empty page.
Goodbye, I think, but I cannot say the word out loud. Jamie still sleeps. Allan is fussing with his medicines. Will…
Will, I can only hope, is all right.
Goodbye, and thank you, and I’m sorry.
The wind is bitter when I slip out the door. I will have to find a few more clothes from somewhere if I am to survive the cold. No matter. I’ve done this before. I can do it again.
Into the wintry dusk. Into streets full of constables, of strangers who would turn me in, perhaps go running straight to Hatchett if they knew. Into a new life, a new town, a new name. Into a second chance.
I’m on my own, but that is nothing to fear. It means that this life—this new life—is mine. And mine alone.
TAoST: Chapter Four—Would Things Be Easier If There Was a Right Way (Teaser)
Series Masterlist | Main Masterlist
The day of the premiere used to be hectic, but you liked to think that you had it down pretty perfectly. Up by nine, coffee and breakfast, nail appointment at ten, home by noon, shower, hair at two, makeup at three, dress at four-thirty, pictures at five-thirty, and out the door and on the carpet by six-thirty. It seemed like the a lot but you loved it. You looked sitting in the chair or standing in the middle of the room while everyone worked around you. There was some strange peace to it.
“Good morning,” Tom smiled as you walked into the ensuite bathroom where he was shaving, “sleep good?”
You rubbed your eyes. “O kicks in her sleep.”
“Yeah, that’s why I suggested she sleep with you instead of me.” Tom laughed.
“You’re evil for that.”
You, Emily, and O were in one room, while Tom and Harry were in another. Both of the rooms were connected by a door, and with Harry taking a shower, Tom meandered over into your bathroom.
“Where’s Em?”
“She went out to get you a coffee and something to eat.”
“Avocado toast and an over easy egg?”
“That’s the order I gave her.”
You let out a content sigh. “You’re the best,” you smiled, leaning your head against Tom’s shoulder.
“Why don’t you cancel your nail appointment and go back to bed?” Tom suggested, wiping his face of with a towel and pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“I can’t,” you shook your head, “it’s part of the process.”
You envied Tom a little bit for how easy his process was. He just had to get his hair tussled a bit, get maybe a pump or two of foundation and concealer, get his suit on, and bam; he was red carpet ready.
“At least find maybe an hour to squeeze in a nap,” Tom said.
“I’ll do my best,” you nodded, pressing a kiss to his lips.
Tom wrapped his arms around your waist, holding you close as he deepened the kiss. He lifted you onto the marble counter before cupping your jaw with his hand. “You’re so beautiful,” he sighed in between kisses.
You giggled. “You’re not so bad yourself.” Tom kissed down your neck, tucking his hands under your sleep shirt to cup your breasts. “Tom,” you hummed, wrapping your legs around his hips.
“Yeah, baby?”
“Fuck, I—”
“(Y/N)!” O called from the other side of the door, “I have to go potty!”
You pulled away from Tom and hopped off the counter, opening the door for the little girl. She waddled in and immediately rushed to the toilet.
“No, Tom!” She squealed.
“Sorry, sorry,” Tom chuckled, “I’m leaving.”
You covered his eyes and walked him out the room. “Don’t worry, O, he didn’t see anything.” Octavia nodded and kicked her feet happily.
as someone who loves the sam raimi spider-man movies... i honestly DON'T want a spider-man 4.
so many spider-man fans wholeheartedly believe they're going to get a fourth raimi film, or TASM 3. to be fair, i'm not against andrew's spidey coming back. his films had a lot of potential (and the first one is great!), and he's a great peter parker imo.
but even then, i'm just... why? why can't ppl move on? the fun about spider-man is that it has so many different adaptations and different spider-people - especially miles who's finally getting the spotlight on the big screen. as much as i like tobey and andrew, i'm sick of ppl demanding their return. AGAIN. they got no way home and they still aren't satisfied with it.
and although i will always hate nwh, i also have the impression that tobey's and andrew's roles were more of a homage to the old days, so they came back one last time to help tom. i mean, i think the concept on paper is cool, too bad it pushes tom aside. still, it's been so many years, why does everyone insist tobey and/or andrew are the "only true spider-men"? there's not a PERFECT spider-man. they're all unique in their own ways. if you personally resonate with tobey and/or andrew, that's cool. but you have to respect that things change and spider-man is a hero that means different things to many ppl. that's what spider-verse explores.
when i was a kid, i did want spider-man 4 to happen. i get why some ppl don't want their childhood hero to be played by someone else. i remember being disappointed when TASM was first announced. but i think spider-man homecoming helped me accept other versions, ones that are fresh and more relatable to younger audiences. and spider-verse then opened my mind. i didn't even know miles before i saw the teaser. i was so excited! and i was not disappointed.
i mean, i think spider-verse is universally beloved in the spidey fandom, but mcu peter still gets the short end of the stick, which sucks. i'm so tired of ppl pitting the live action spideys against each other, especially to shit on mcu peter. it just feels too mean-spirited to me and it frustrates me that ppl have an unhealthy attachment to the older films.
besides, with all the bad reboots we've been getting, do you REALLY want them to ruin your childhood films? i think it's best to just let them go. or just watch the movies when you miss them.
I don't think I can actually contain my excitement for the new Mutant Mayhem movie!!! What are you most looking forward to/anticipating and hoping for?
anon i’m right there with you pal, hahah.
more under the cut cos i went a little insane lol
and oh boy SO much. it’s funny because i am a no trailer kind of person. i don’t mind teasers but on a general note i tend to avoid trailers only because most of the time they’re very spoilery. but i broke my own rule mostly because i have no impulse control and was very very happy when it decided to not show me the entire plot of the movie in 2 minutes or less.
i really REALLY love that it’s not a krang/shredder movie. don’t get me wrong: love those guys, i think they’re great “main” villains but it gets a little tiresome of seeing them on the big screen most of the time.
it feels really reminiscent of spider man homecoming in the sense that, we didn’t need the entire movie to spell out peter’s origins. we already KNOW he’s been bitten by a spider, we already KNOW about ben and about responsibility and blah blah blah. and having homecoming be a little ways into his new life, having him takedown smaller, street level villains felt super refreshing and so much more down to earth and so much more like spider man, and that’s the feeling i get with this new tmnt movie.
we don’t need them going to space taking down aliens or making mortal enemies right away, we need them saving shitty parts of the city from purple dragons, making home for all the stray mutants. if feels so much more.. homely? in a way? it feels grounded and im really happy to finally see that in a tmnt movie.
(we can save shredder or krang for a sequel lol)
I LOVE that it doesn’t seem to be focused on just one of the brothers. unfortunately over time tmnt seems to boil itself down to “this is the plot and then we have leo/raph conflict, then we have the peak, and then leo/raph conflict resolves and they finally work as a team and save the world”
and again, i do enjoy some brotherly angst from time to time but it really gets tiresome after a while, especially when you’re watching donnie and mikey get shafted into essentially background support cast lol.
brothers fight and argue and i don’t doubt that we’ll see that in the movie, maybe driving somewhat of a wedge between them before their big moment but as long as it isn’t the resounding conflict of the movie i’ll be happy. i want name calling and hair pulling but don’t make the entire movie just leo vs raph match. they’re each others best friends at the end of the day.
i’m hoping for a little more of mikey and donnie. again like i said in my last point, they’re always pretty under-utilised. mikey always falls into the comic relief cycle and donnie is just. there until someone needs him to pick a lock or defuse a bomb lol. notice in the trailer when mikey asked what they would do if they weren’t monsters (coming back to that in a moment) we never actually hear what it is mike and don want. whether it was just for the gag of donnie’s sarcastic response to leo’s answer or whether it was intentional, i have full faith in seth rogan ever since he put out the characters sheets about mikey wanting to be taken more seriously AND the fact that it was mikey looking longingly out of the sewer towards the city. he might make me cry in this movie. he might make me cry.
i want to be HURT. yes mikey is my very first blorbo so naturally i treat him like a personal punching bag. mike sees himself as a monster, no doubt the others do too, but throughout the lifespan of the tmnt franchise, mikey’s always the one that wants to be part of the “normal” world, making human friends, wanting to be accepted. yeah we got that in bayverse 2 but if we get a repeat of the scene where the police officers that were surrounding them with guns calls them monsters to their faces and mikey starts tearing up… i might not make it. look for me on the isle floor underneath the fold up cinema seats cos i’ll be there, weeping like a damn baby. i want this movie to be fun and im okay with it if it isn’t more angst heavy but the tmnt fandom are pretty used to the pain by now, it’s almost expected lmao.
things im hoping for: a casey hint. hand on heart i don’t think he’ll be here for this movie, and unless he’s referred to at the end then im hoping we get a Easter egg at least, a la yoshi at the end of the super mario bros movie. show me a hockey mask and i will go bananas.
woody dirkins. i will honestly do so many unlawful things for a woody cameo AT LEAST. woody is one of my favourite side characters…. i want Woody. i might protest this who is with me.
no multiverse shit. i don’t mind tongue in cheek references, i think that’s cute and it’s fine and hey. if we get a 2003 reference or joke i might just combust because it’ll be nice if SOMEBODY in the Nick studios remembered those guys. but i’m so happy with this being a standalone movie. no crossovers no sky splitting open no big blue beam going to destroy the city. i want this bubble of a world to exist on its own, mostly because the multiverse trope is everywhere at the moment, so it would just be really cool not to have it again lol
OH. ideas for a sequel despite not even having seen the first one ???? here is one:
the rat king. again, we don’t have to go full main mega villain yet but 2012 rat king was UNREAL and genuinely one of my favourite villains of all time. it wouldn’t have to be beat for beat the same as that particular episode but i quite enjoy it when they give Splinter stuff to do.
overall i think i’m gonna be pleased with this movie. i genuinely am not fussed about many things, if it’s gots the turtles, i’m gonna be happy, trust me.
i’m also looking forward to the soundtrack. we’ve only had one song so far but i just know it’s gonna be very fun, 90s hip hop, my kinda thing.
a lot of love seems to have been poured into this project and it doesn’t feel like a cash grab or toy selling front in any shape or form. the tmnt fandom has pretty much been bobbing about in waves of content for years, some good some bad, some left in the mud. we haven’t gotten a real movie since 2016, back when i was in college making essays on the franchise itself, and now here we are seven years later and i’m just as hyped as i knew i would have been if I’d known this movie was coming out back then.
i cant wait for this movie, to feel it’s love through the screen from the writers and the cast, and it’s just so exciting. be prepared because as soon as my little mushroom brain goes and watches that movie, i’m making it my entire personality for perhaps forever. i won’t even be sorry lol
thanks for the ask anon, sorry it got a little rambly there — have a good day :)
WISH Worrying
Tumblr media
I'm seeing some folks wondering where the "marketing" is for WISH, the new Walt Disney Animation Studios film...
A movie that opens Thanksgiving week, quite a few months out from now...
I predict the trailer for this picture, a Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn-directed animated film that celebrates Disney's 100th anniversary, will debut in June. If we're lucky, we hear a little something during Disney's presentation at CinemaCon tomorrow.
Anyways, June... But that's so late, you may say?
Let's go back to 2010... TANGLED.
The teaser for that movie debuted in mid-June of 2010, in time for the release of Pixar's hotly-anticipated TOY STORY 3. Then it got a proper trailer in the early autumn. TANGLED opened pretty well and had excellent legs, and was quite popular at the worldwide box office. Hey, $590m+ is nothing to scoff at!
The same strategy was applied to 2012's WRECK-IT RALPH. That movie made over $470m worldwide.
2013. Did it again. With FROZEN... Do I even need to say more?
They also did the same for BIG HERO 6 in 2014, and MOANA in 2016.
They made an exception for both RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET and FROZEN II, though. Both November releases in their respective years, the teasers for those popped up around February.
Then WDAS circled back to that strategy for ENCANTO. They probably would've done it for RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, if it had remained a Thanksgiving 2020 release as originally planned. Before COVID-19 and other complications with Disney's schedule resulted in it being pushed back to March of 2021. STRANGE WORLD did the same thing, first look in June, movie released in November.
Difference is... TANGLED, WRECK-IT RALPH, FROZEN, BIG HERO 6, and MOANA, by various metrics, performed well at the box office.
ENCANTO dealt with the Delta and - later - Omicron variants of COVID-19, while families - tight on money - saved their dollars for something like SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME or even something like GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. ENCANTO hit its stride after it came to Disney+, after making a so-so $96m at the domestic box office and little more than $200m worldwide (not great against a $120m+ budget).
STRANGE WORLD altogether failed, right out of the gate and couldn't really leg it up. Went quickly to Disney+ within weeks of release. Far past the Omicron variant and with many families back in the theaters, as evidenced by how amazingly MINIONS Deux did and how PUSS IN BOOTS Dos *really* legged it up, what happened with STRANGE WORLD?
People often say "it had no marketing!"
But it did... Two trailers, quite a few ads, TV spots, some merch, the usual. The problem was, none of that stuff got audiences interested in seeing it. Thus it opened badly, and audiences didn't like it much either, hence the poor CinemaScore grade and subsequently bad legs. (It had to be the homophobia, because the movie - while rushed in my opinion - is really no different from most other animated movies out there. It's not like it was some weirdo niche esoteric movie that was audience-unfriendly. Plus, for whatever reason, most sci-fi animation like this has a hard time connecting.)
WISH looks to be what the public usually associates with a Disney animated feature: A princess, cute animals, songs, apparently a traditional villain who is evil and scary, magical stuff all around. It's about where wishing stars come from, for chrissakes. Apparently it's going to be loaded to the brim with Easter eggs and references to classic Disney animated movies, too. I don't know, I hear conflicting reports from within the trenches on this one. Disney's positioning it as some major origin story for several of the iconic Disney animated movies (when the "wishing star" only really appeared in PINOCCHIO and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG some 69 years apart from another, and I guess you could count 'Faith is a Bluebird' from THE RESCUERS), but other things tell me that this is not at all the case, and that it's just going to have some fun stuff for us nerds to keep our eyes peeled for.
Anyways, WISH seems like an easy-enough sell. That Disney can easily marathon run from June to November, like they did with TANGLED and FROZEN and MOANA and such.
The real hurdle is always the challenge of... Making audiences like what they see. That's actually easier said than done, and if I have to pull that William Goldman quote out again, I shall!
Whatever was in those trailers for STRANGE WORLD just didn't do it. And with families and audiences choosier than ever before, given how goddamn expensive movie trips are, and other stuff vying for their attention... WISH's teaser, trailer, TV spots, et al. will have to work hard to get their eyeballs. Getting the marketing started earlier doesn't mean anything. If it did, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG would've been a bona fide blockbuster and there'd be at least one sequel to it and several new hand-drawn Disney animated movies. The teaser for that movie debuted in summer 2008, about a year and a half before its December 2009 release... But the movie opened with a meager $24m, and had to rely on strong word-of-mouth to eke it past $100m domestically... With AVATAR and the ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS sequel playing next door, no less.
Again, if WISH "looks good" to audiences, then it'll open fine and leg itself up over the holidays quite nicely. I can see it opening with at least $40m over the 3-day, should audiences not determine that all their hard-earned money goes to something like THE MARVELS, or WONKA, or that HUNGER GAMES prequel, or TROLLS BAND TOGETHER even.
We gotta see how Pixar's ELEMENTAL, their first full-blown theatrical release original movie since COCO... Yes, COCO, way back in 2017... ONWARD doesn't count, it literally opened the week before everything shut down. It only lasted two weeks in theaters, and then went straight to On Demand and Disney+ right after. We gotta see how ELEMENTAL does, first. That's the one to look out for.
Disney arguably baked a lot of folks' brains, sort of training them to say "I'll just wait till it comes to Disney+." I think we're even starting to see that with the once-foolproof Marvel movies, too. Again, trips to the theaters - especially for a family - are expensive, and it's a gamble each time our. Your experience could totally suck, and it might not even be worth the hassle. But ooooh, in a few months, there it is! In our living room, on our pretty high quality HDTV! $100+ saved!
It's gotta have a real hook now, a real "you gotta see this in a THEATER" hook. Like TOP GUN: MAVERICK had last year, like AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER had. I hear-tell that returning CEO Bob Iger is trying to restore that to Disney after the previous CEO's aggressive pivot to streaming. I don't doubt that WISH is a priority now, given that WDAS movies used to make bank before COVID-19. Sometimes more so than even the Marvel and Star Wars movies. Ditto the Pixar films. COCO was Pixar's last original box office biggie, and that made over $810m worldwide. A couple of their latest sequels, like INCREDIBLES 2 and TOY STORY 4, easily crossed the big billion worldwide. WDAS' last original blockbuster was MOANA, which made over $680m, while sequel FROZEN II is the second highest-grossing animated movie for the time being.
So, it would be silly of the rearranged structure of Disney's entertainment division to disregard ELEMENTAL (which is screening at Cannes, that's a *big* deal!) and WISH. They both look very "just as you like 'em" kinda movies, in that ELEMENTAL is yet another exercise in the "what if [insert x thing here] was a big city/factory/world with feelings?" template that is often associated with Pixar, and in that WISH is all the stuff general audiences tend to associate with Disney Animation. Maybe not the most exciting things to some of us, but if they have win back paying moviegoers with these old chestnuts, so be it.
Anyways, I hope both do very, very well. If ELEMENTAL does pretty good, we might have an idea of what kind of numbers Disney-released animated movies are capable of scoring in a post-Disney+, post-outbreak world.
Pretense Chapter 2 Teaser - Full Chapter coming 06/02
Chapter summary: Chasing Spider-Man is anything but easy
Peter nods and he holds the sheepish smile. “Internship.”
It’s a bold faced lie. While Peter still hates lying, after all of these years of lying to pretty everyone, he’s gotten quite good at it. And while he doesn’t really want to lie to you, he doesn’t have any other reason for him to out a coffee shop this late when he classes in the morning. Internship is a lot better than vigilante.
There’s a soft laugh you both share and a warmth spreads throughout Peter’s chest. “Can...I sit?” Peter asks, gesturing to the open chair in front of you.
“Sure,” You close your laptop and move a few things out of the way.
You always liked this coffee shop. It’s far enough away from your home that no one really comes to bug you but it’s a well-lit and high trafficked area so you’re not too uneasy about being here late at night. Plus, Harry’s within walking distance so you always have him you can go to. This place also actually has pretty good coffee, not something tastes overly processed like Starbucks or bottom tier coffee like McDonalds but coffee that actually tastes good.
“What’s your internship?” You ask as Peter takes a seat. “I...I just mean if it keeps you up at a coffee shop at eleven at night, it must be tasking.” You ramble, not wanting to intrude on Peter’s business if he doesn’t want to share his work.
“Oh...uh, yeah.” Peter stutters, he hasn’t gotten this far in the lie in a few years. Does he still say Tony Stark? It’s really has been brought up in ages, if that’s the excuse he should still use when people ask questions. But the longer Peter’s taking to figure this out, the more you’re just staring at him, waiting for a response and now he just feels dumb. Maybe he could just pretend he didn’t hear you. No, that would not work, he already started to answer. Okay, now he has to say something. Anything. Anything at all.
“UM,” Peter shakes his head while your brows knit together. “Tony Stark.” He blurts it out finally and he’s swearing it should not have been that difficult. He really could have just said Stark Industries. Why must he name drop and sound like a total nerd? It takes everything in Peter not to facepalm right there until he hears voice turn high-pitched.
“Really?” Your eyes widen as you lean forward. “Wait. So you know….like, Iron Man?”
Someone you just met, knows Iron Man? That has got to be the wildest thing you’ve heard and there are millions of thoughts racing through your mind like F1 drivers. If he knows Iron Man, maybe he knows Hawkeye? How cool would that be? THE Hawkeye? Clint Barton? But if he knows Iron Man, maybe he knows Spider-Man? Maybe you can get lucky and Peter will hate Spider-Man and can help you unmask him. Okay, now you’re getting a bit ahead of yourself and that’s kind of a shitty thought anyway. So, you stick with Hawkeye.
Peter nods. “Yeah.” He’s voice is a bit flat but holds the smallest touch of questioning.
“So...do you know the other Avengers?” You ask with so much excitement it brings a genuine smile to Peter’s face. Your leg bounces beneath you as a smile splits your face. “I mean, do you know Hawkeye? Clint Barton?” Your eyes hold so much hope and Peter would normally just...lie and say no. If it were anyone else but you have much hope, he can’t just crush you.
“Well, uh,” Peter shrugs and he tries to find words between stutters but you don’t seem to mind. “I, uh, I mean...I...yeah, I’ve...met him. A few times.” Peter swallows thickly, taking another drink of his coffee.
“That’s so cool!” You nearly squeal. “Is he cool? What’s he like? I mean, if you can tell me….or if you want to. It’s okay if you don’t want to. I’m sure you get asked all the time about the Avengers so maybe you don’t want to talk about it which is totally fine. This is fine. It’s okay, never mind. I’m rambling. I’m sorry.” You immediately become taken over with embarrassment.
Everyone loves the other Avengers and you get it. They are cool and everything, Thor is a God for crying out loud. That’s pretty awesome but...they’re not Clint to you. Someone he seems pretty ordinary, mostly, and is the best archer to exist. And he’s deaf. And he saved your life once. Clint’s always the biggest hero to you, not Iron Man or Captain America or Spider-Man.
“Sorry, uh, it’s just...ya know? He’s cool.” You make a very weak gesture towards your right ear where a hearing aid sits.
Peter remembers the first time he met Tony, the Stark Expo. Well, he didn’t really meet Tony but Tony saved him and told him “nice work, kid” so, it kind of counts. He was little then but he remembers never shutting up about it. May has a video of Peter relaying the whole story to Ben and how his face lit up the entire time. That’s what you look like. Same excitement and you haven’t even met Clint. It’s just talking about him.
“Yeah, yeah, no I get it.” Peter says in a rush. “He’s really cool.” Peter beams. “He drinks a lot of coffee though and he adopted a one-eyed dog. His name is Lucky.” There’s a chuckle that escapes his lips and you’re completely captivated, hanging out to every word like a tightrope.
“Mood.” You state, laughing softly and taking a sip of your own coffee. “That’s so cool he adopted a dog. Bet that dog has the best life.”
“Yeah, he does.” Peter lets out a chuckle and he figures this could be a good way to get out that conversation before he starts saying too much and it becomes suspicious. “So, uh, what’s your internship?” Peter asks.
“I intern at the Daily Bulge under J. Jonah Jameson.” You say softly. “Definitely nothing like yours.” You let out a quiet laugh.
Peter’s heart drops with the name of both the newspaper and the reporter. JJ has been out to unmask Spider-Man for over three years now. He’s always publishing stories about how Spider-Man is what’s wrong with New York. He’s a vigilante who does more harm than good. The takedown of bad guys and villains should be done by those equipped, like US forces and police, not some scrawny kid in a blue and red spandex suit. But, Peter, in this coffee shop with you, is Peter Parker. He’s not Spider-Man here, so he doesn’t say a word about it.
“What’s it like? I mean,” Peter starts. “What do you do? D-do you enjoy it?”
A sad smile comes over your face. “I mean, yeah, I-I guess?” Your words come out as a question while your whole demeanor switches like a light. “Usually, he’s a good reporter. I have a lot to learn from him and he has connections, ya know? But,” You chew on your bottom lip. “Sometimes, it kind of sucks and he’s a bit...” You pause, not really wanting to speak ill of your boss but you feel there’s a sense of confidence between you and Peter in this coffee shop. “Vengeful? Spiteful? Kind of insane?”
“Why, uh, why do you say that?” Peter asks and he feels bad. No one should feel like their work or internship sucks or that their boss is any of the things you just listed. It should be something someone enjoys, especially with most internships not even being paid internships. If you’re going to do something for free, you might as well enjoy it.
“I’m always running around everywhere, day and night. I never get enough sleep because of it. I fell behind in a few classes when I started interning and I have never fallen behind before. I lost most of my friends because I’m at his beck and call, ya know, people kind of get tired of you always bailing on them last minute.” You say quietly, looking down to your half-empty coffee cup.
But, Peter understands. Always running around night and day, losing sleep, falling behind, losing friends. He’s lucky that he still has Ned and MJ but he did lose them before and he’s lost a handful of others because he can’t always commit to show up. That said, there have definitely been times where he’s seen both Ned and MJ disappointed because he can’t make a birthday event or a movie night. It’s not exactly easy sometimes but he has extenuating circumstances, like the greater good, that’s what he tells himself. So, what’s JJ got you doing that’s making you lose friends and sleep?
“I-if you don’t wanna talk about it...it’s okay...but what’s he always have you doing?” Peter asks, his hands wrapped loosely around his to-go cup.
You sigh and take a small sip of your coffee. “I have to follow Spider-Man around, try and catch him unmasking himself or doing something incriminating to make New York hate him.” A tinge of guilt cascades over you with your words, you’ve never really said that out loud before and it goes against everything you believe in.
Peter’s eyes widen and his jaw falls open a little. One thought comes to his mind is big, red, flashing letters like an exit sign: Well, shit.
