The M*A*S*H Time Loop
This was pretty much just a stream of consciousness writing. I haven't looked at it much since I wrote it a couple of days ago but I wanted to post it anyway.
The sitcom M*A*S*H ran from 1972 to 1983 and captured households around America. The series follows M*A*S*H (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit 4077 through the Korean War. Knowledgable readers might have noticed that the Korean War lasted 3 years from June 1950 to July 1953 while the M*A*S*H series ran for 11 years from September 1972 to February 1983. This significant timeline difference created an interesting effect on M*A*S*H that led to many fans discussing the ‘M*A*S*H time loop theory.’ As the name would imply, this fan theory posits that the events of M*A*S*H do not take place during the Korean War as we know it, but instead that the show follows the 4077th as they are stuck in an endless time loop and are unable to escape the war.
Clearly, the timeline of M*A*S*H is a bit difficult to line up with the events of the actual Korean War due to the 8-year difference. Characters such as BJ Hunnicutt and Radar O’Riley were on the sitcom for 8 years but canonically it is difficult to say if they were meant to have spent the same amount of time in Korea. While the episodes were aired weekly, it is impossible to say if most of the episodes were meant to take place a week apart. There are several episodes for which we know this is not the case, for example, the season 9 episode ‘A War for All Seasons’  begins with the 4077th ringing in the new year and follows several key events throughout 1951 and ends on New Year’s Day 1952. This seems to imply that the previous 8 seasons all take place in 1950. It could also imply that subsequent episodes all take place in 1952 or later, though many assume that some episodes show events that were not seen in ‘A War for All Seasons.’ On the opposite end of the spectrum, several episodes take place over a matter of hours. The season 8 episode ‘Life Time’ happens essentially in real time as Hawkeye has only 20 minutes to complete an arterial graft on a wounded soldier. These and other episodes make creating a sensible timeline for the M*A*S*H series an incredibly complicated process. Trapper John leaves in the first episode of season 4, does this mean that he was only in Korea for 6 months? As mentioned earlier, Radar and BJ were on M*A*S*H for the same number of years, but Radar leaves before ‘A War for All Seasons,’ does this mean that Radar was enlisted for a year or less while BJ was present for 2 years? Does it matter how long any of these characters were engaged in the Korean War? The time loop theory certainly says no.
The nature of all sitcom television lends itself very well to the concept of a time loop. The show almost always resets itself at the end of every episode and it begins the next episode in essentially the same place. The order of the episodes often doesn’t matter. Everything is always happening, nothing happens, it doesn’t matter. In M*A*S*H specifically, one of the core themes of the show is the cyclical nature of war. It intentionally pokes fun at the repetition, the monotony with lines like ‘the future’s been canceled by the war department’ and ‘Father, what do you think of purgatory so far?’ as well as with aspects such as the omnipresent PA voice. Hawkeye Pierce becomes the main focus of the show and the audience's lens in many ways and as such is one of the easiest introductions to this concept. Hawkeye complains about being stuck nearly every episode and often phrases it as though he is not just stuck as a surgeon in a war zone, but as if his whole life is stuck, as if his past and future are all contained within the war. Another character giving credence to this theory is Radar O’Riley. Radar earned his nickname due to his uncanny ability to sense incoming wounded before anyone else and to predict what his commanding officers will ask for before they open their mouths. While this is certainly a fun gag for the show, many think it shows that Radar is aware, consciously or unconsciously, of the time loop. Radar is aware of when the choppers will arrive and when Henry needs files because it has all happened before and will happen again. Many fans also point out that this could be the reason for Radar’s reaction to Henry being sent home. It is more than just realizing that he will be left in Korea while the man he has come to see as a father figure goes home to his family. On some level, Radar remembers that Henry will not make it home; he knows he can not stop it. Of course one of the biggest pieces of evidence against the idea of a time loop is the fact that it does end. Everyone goes home in the end, however, this does not entirely disprove the theory. Many pieces of media that focus on the concept of time loops end with our protagonists escaping. But they can not escape entirely. Though all of our characters leave Korea by the end of the series, those who are still alive have not left completely. They will be stuck remembering this time forever.
While the original intention of M*A*S*H certainly was not to tell a story about a group of army doctors, nurses, and enlisted men trapped in a time loop, that is in many ways the story we got. It is the best showcase of the cycle, the monotonous horror of war in modern media. The only changes come with tragedy, death, or abandonment. It is a time loop in the only ways that matter.

~*~
Boston QZ March 2024
You were one of the lucky ones.
After the initial outbreak and the chaos that followed, you were protected, ushered into a covered military caravan and housed in relative safety. You were only a resident, but your medical experience made you valuable. Most doctors had been infected in the early hours.
Most of them hadn’t run.
If you had been anyone else, you think you would have been shot. Instead, the military sent you to the quarantine zone in Boston, and you were drafted into FEDRA without ever having signed your name on the line.
Your cowardice in the face of danger was your saving grace, and you will never let yourself forget it.
You’re six years into the pandemic when you’re summoned to the colonel’s office for a special request. FEDRA wants you to travel to a sparsely populated territory outside the QZ and embed yourself there, do threat assessments, and send the intel back to your higher-ups. They frame it as an outreach program for recruitment and a means to get ahead of terrorist threats, but you understand the unspoken implications.
They want you to be a spy.
You protest, but it’s a half-hearted attempt. You know they aren’t offering you a choice.
You train for combat and survival. You learn how to shoot, how to run, how to fight, and how to hide. And then FEDRA packs you up and sends you off into the wilderness of what used to be Pennsylvania, joining a small outpost east of Pittsburgh. There are no terrorist threats to be found, only starving, freezing civilians, hordes of infected, and so much desperation.
You return, six months older and with only a few bruises, so they send you out again. And again. And again.
As it turns out, you make a good soldier. You don’t ask what FEDRA does with the information you find, and they don’t tell you.
On your fourth mission, you come back with more than bruises. The burgh of Everglade, forty miles north of a ruined Jacksonville, Florida, wasn’t as welcoming as you would have hoped. You’d been savagely beaten and sent back to Boston, less weapons and supplies, a walking warning.
Don’t fuck with us, FEDRA.
But there’s a hard seed of grit in you that felt fair was fair, that you deserved whatever punishment you got. You sutured your gashes, reset your broken nose, and took your next assignment.
~*~
By the time Joel Miller and Ellie Williams are staggering across the Jackson threshold for the second time, in the spring of 2024, you’re opening the door of your Boston QZ apartment to a man in weathered FEDRA fatigues.
“Hey,” he says, barely meeting your eyes. “Waller wants to see you.”
“When?”
“0800 hours.”
“Fine,” you say. He doesn’t respond, lingering in the doorway until you’re forced to ask, “Anything else?”
He ducks his head. “Got any plans tonight?”
“I do if you have the money.”
Unsurprisingly, FEDRA doesn’t pay well–doctor, spy, or shit-shoveler. But you’ve found other ways to get by.
The man– a boy, really , you think–reaches into his pocket and pulls out a crumpled stack of ration cards. You take your time counting them before pocketing the payment and stepping aside to let him enter.
His hands are on you before you can finish closing the door, greedy and wanting. You let him push you up against the wall, tipping your head to give him access to your neck, already tuning out his gasps and moans and clumsy thrusts.
~*~
Afterward, he’s panting on your mattress, and you’re fumbling on the nightstand for a lighter.
“You know those things’ll kill you,” he mumbles.
“Fascinating,” you respond dryly, finding the lighter and putting the cigarette to your lips. You allow yourself one long, slow inhale. You hold the smoky air in your lungs as long as you can, savoring that first and only hit, before tamping the cigarette out and rolling it up in a piece of foil for later. “You can go.”
You feel his hand slide over your ass and you flinch away, standing and gathering your clothes from the floor.
“C’mon, baby. I gave you extra.”
“Yeah, and you shorted me five last time. Go.”
He growls. “Fuckin’ bitch.”
You ignore this, slipping a clean-enough tank top over your head, pulling on your jeans, and heading for the kitchen. You’re putting a kettle of water on the hot plate when you hear the metallic snick of a blade behind you.
You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.
You tense, listening, waiting, until you feel the hint of a blade at the side of your throat.
“How about you suck me off next time and we’ll call it even,” he whispers, breath hot in your ear.
You dive to one side, wrapping the man’s arm with your own, knocking the knife away. It skitters across the floor, lost under the radiator. Your left hand grips the man’s wrist and pulls it back as you slam your right hand into his shoulder, forcing him down against the counter. You twist his arm until you imagine you can hear the tendons creaking.
The man screams in pain and surprise. “Whoa no shit I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m fucking sorry don’t–”
You slam your full body weight against him and twist his arm back and up with a sharp snap , his wrist giving under your practiced hands. Another scream, this one feral, as you release the man’s arm.
“You broke my fucking wrist you fucking cunt!”
“Fuck off or I’ll break the other one,” you pant, shoving him toward the door.
“You’ll fucking hang for this!”
“Yeah?” you spit. “You say one word and I’ll make sure your dick never touches another girl in this QZ because it’ll be sitting in a jar on my fucking desk.”
He sneers, but there’s no threat in it. He slouches backward with an angry sob, cradling his broken hand and fumbling with the door, all the while trying to keep his eyes trained on you.
You lock the door behind him and slide the deadbolt home with unnecessary force.
Fuck.
~*~
Colonel Waller doesn’t look up at you when you enter his office, his greeting just a single word.
“Wyoming.”
You frown. You’ve never been west of Ohio.
“We lost an asset in Utah. Fireflies.”
“Shit.”
“Yeah. ‘Shit’ is about the shape of it,” he sighs, finally looking up from his paperwork. “We had someone in KC but they’ve gone radio silent. We assume the worst.”
“So…I take it the target’s in Wyoming?”
He nods. “We suspect several Fireflies are holed up in a town called Jackson. It’s big,” he continues, sliding you a sheaf of folded maps across the desk. “Our scouts…haven’t made out so well.”
“How many came back?”
He looks at you blankly.
None.
“We need to know how many warm bodies, how much firepower, do they have patrols and when, are they collaborating with anyone else in the area. We need–”
“I got it,” you say, pocketing the map, an aching exhaustion deep in your gut. “When?”
“There’s a supply run headed west tomorrow. You’ll camp with them until KC, then make your way in on foot. We expect radio contact every six weeks; if we don’t hear anything by then–”
“You’ll assume I’m dead,” you finish.
He interlocks his fingers. “Any questions?”
You shake your head.
He nods and goes back to his work. “Dismissed.”

title: The Game We're Playing and You're My Target
summary: Idia has three hours to survive at a party. Easier said than done. At least he can hang out in the garden...with Azul? Yeah, Azul is there too.
ship: Idiazul
word count: 2,643

Tumblr media
Parties are a total war zone. All the extroverts are running around, greeting each other, and participating in mindless mingling. For an introvert, it means avoiding as many people as possible. After you give your forced introduction it's time to make a getaway. There's no time to hang around out in the open and wait for those normies to pounce on a poor soul.
Thankfully, all Idia needs to do is survive for three hours. The counter started the minute he stepped foot onto these overly fancy grounds and he made sure that the second his time was up, he'd disappear. It's not like anyone would miss him anyway. That excuse is easy to use to try and slip away earlier, but he can't after making a promise to Ortho.
"Just for a few hours? Please, Idia?"
When Ortho gave him those pleading eyes, he couldn't say no. And boy does he regret it.
On the bright side, he knows the venue inside and out. When prepping for the big night, Idia made sure to know all the secret getaways, the hidden hallways, the backdoors, any where to get out of the bigger and more populated areas for the night. And that helped with his first hour.
Idia only promised to be at the party, not to socialize.
The voices of people he could care less about were all drowned out by the music blaring through the speakers. Even while out in the gardens, Idia could hear the annoyingly modern music. As much as it wasn't to his tastes, it did provide as nice background noise. Wandering through the garden, he found a nice spot to relax. A secluded area that he doubts anyone would venture out to. It might not be as ideal as finding an empty bedroom to hide in, but it was better than nothing.
As Idia takes a seat on the white marble, golden eyes glance over to the main building. He huffs.
"I don't need to be with those normies," he mutters. "It's not like they need me to be there anyway. My tablet would have just been fine and I could have remained as some mystery character. The top-tier characters get all the attention anyway."
It's easy to imagine Vil stealing the show. An SSR character like him is in his natural habitat in a place like this. Plus he has the beauty to flaunt while being on stage for a crowd. Honestly, the school should have only sent him instead of all the housewardens. But, whatever.
A hand plays with his blue flames. His hair had been put up to look...decent instead of its usual mess. It's fine, he doesn't mind it, but he hated the looks he got on the way here. With his other hand, he whips out his phone. His gaze automatically goes to the time. An hour and a half left. That gives him time to grind before a game resets for the day.
"Agh, I should have just let this run on a script at home..." He murmurs. "Could have gotten some more EXP."
Idia sighs as he finishes the usual tasks. He could do more but it's monotonous and repetitive if he isn't doing something else. And the only other thing option is going back inside while letting this run. Yeah, no. Not doing that. It doesn't help that it barely ate a few minutes off the clock.
"My, my, I should have known I'd find you out here."
"Eep!"
Idia is quick to jump to his feet. Hands gripping his phone for dear life as he steps away from the source of the new voice.
"Azul?" He relaxes once their eyes meet. "I didn't know you could jump-scare someone. What are you doing out here?"
"Enjoying the scenery." Idia scoffs. "What? Don't believe me?" Azul says with an obviously feigned sad expression. "Even I have to escape from the scene every now and then."
"You? Make an escape? The only reason you'd get away is if you were losing at your own game."
"You wound me, to think I'd ever let that happen."
Idia hates that he has to agree with him on that. Azul knows people, knows what they want, and knows how to get what he wants from them. As far as he's aware, Azul has never failed in making a deal. His completionist stats were always 100%.
"There's a first for everything..." Idia mumbles as he returns to his seat. Not even this interaction took up a few minutes. When had time ever been this slow? Not even his MMO updates were this painstakingly long.
Idia doesn't think to give Azul any more attention, not until he hears the other's footsteps. Heels click against the tiles leading toward him. He sighs and looks up.
"Your brother would be disappointed seeing you out here."
"Erk!" Idia winces. That was a critical hit! "Y-Yeah..." He gulps. "W-What are you going to do? Tattle on me like some middle schooler?"
"I'm not that petty. Of course, I'd only resort to it if necessary."
Idia frowns, not liking the sound of that.
"How about this? Offer me your time out here and I'll remain silent about your failure to your brother's expectations."
"I think even he has low expectations for me..." Idia says. He knows otherwise. Ortho would be cheering him on every step of the way. But being in there? With so many people? No no no no. He needed to take baby steps first. Get comfortable at housewarden meetings, maybe go to a school event without needing to run off. Being thrown into a party was just like sending a level 1 newbie into the final boss's lair. "Do what you want."
"I'll take that as a yes."
With that, Azul takes a seat beside Idia. He sits close enough that their legs nearly touch, leaving only a small space between them. Neither seems to mind, both are comfortable with each other to be this close. Idia fiddles with his phone, trying to be preoccupied with something to make the time tick by faster. If only downloading a new game wouldn't take so long then he could at least have something to do. He's close to resorting to doing a ten-pull on his previous game out of pure boredom. He doesn't even like the current character's banner, but he wants something to do.
"If you're that bored, you know we could always do something while we're out here."
Idia hates how Azul picks up on his habits. Perhaps he'd been too obvious by swiping back and forth on his phone, or he just knows how he is. How long have they known each other? And how long have they been hanging out outside of class and club activities? It's hard to say.
"Like what? Touch grass?"
"While I think that is something you should do," Azul pauses as he gets to his feet. "Perhaps a walk would be better? That wouldn't hurt."
Idia is about to decline but sighs. He feels like he's lost this game before he's even started it. No excuse could get him out of it. So, he silently puts his phone away and stands.
He lets Azul lead the way. Idia keeps his head down, hands in his pockets. Despite the formal attitude needed for a party like this, he doesn't feel as tense as he should. If he were inside, alone, and surrounded by too many normies, he'd be having a heart attack. But out here? Being with Azul and the comfort of the cool air, and silent winds. It's comforting. He's not alone as he would like, but he feels at ease with Azul.
They pass by a small pond, one decorated with intricate statues. It reminds Idia of a game, a save point area specifically. The music was really pleasant, a gentle piano tune drifting through the air. It brought a sense of comfort after a long and hard fight. He remembers searching for the song immediately and putting it in a playlist for a later day.
"You're smiling," Azul points out.
"Eh? N-No I'm not!" Idia is quick to cover his mouth with his hand and turn away from him. Azul chuckles.
In an attempt to gain some distance between him while getting rid of his little embarrassment, he makes one mistake. A misstep. He hadn't calculated the difference in height between the pond's outer marble layer and the grass, thus leading to his ultimate downfall. He feels his body begin to fall, gravity pulling him down to meet his demise. If this is how he's supposed to go out, then it's a pretty lame way to go. A tragic and uncool death by falling into a shallow pool of water and hitting his head while all dressed up.
Didn't this happen in a game once? Would Azul be suspected of murder? Why couldn't he have just stayed home tonight? Is Vil singing that one song he did at the SDC right now? Why does he know that song? Were Azul's eyes always so pretty?
Whoever said your life flashes before your eyes before you die is a liar because his mind is running a mile a minute about everything else. Then again, he isn't dying. Or falling.
Something, or rather, someone, had stopped his ungraceful death. A hand grips his with all its might and then yanks him forward. It's so sudden that his mind goes blank. Especially as his body collides with Azul's.
"Idia," Azul breathes. His pretty ocean-like eyes were on him. "You should be more careful where you step."
Idia gulps, unable to speak. His heart racing from his (not) near-death experience and being so, so close to Azul. Their bodies are still pressing against each other, their noses only inches apart, hands still clinging to each other.
What kind of flag did he just raise? More importantly, how did he end up in a route like this?!
"Are you okay?" Azul asks, tone softer than earlier, gaze too.
"Y-Yeah!" Idia squeaks out, finally finding his voice. His hair flicks wildly, flashing pink at the tips. He unintentionally squeezes Azul's hand for support. He tries to find his footing now that he's processing everything and finds Azul's other hand placed carefully against his back, keeping him in place.
"Trying to escape me now?" Azul hums with a teasing look. That soft and trustworthy look is gone. Maybe he was imagining things- did Azul really look concerned about him earlier? "After I just saved your life too?"
"Th-That's the worst outcome. If anything, I just ruin my outfit and have to leave earlier than I'm supposed to."
"Oh? Perhaps I should allow you to test your fate then." To tease him, Azul tips Idia back. His hold is firm, but Idia can't tell if he's being serious or not. In a panic, Idia lets go of his hand and wraps his arms around Azul, clinging onto him for dear life. Even if he would like to go home early, it wasn't worth looking like a wet mess in front of Azul.
"D-Don't!" He yelps. Idia glances back to the water to make sure their distance remains the same. When he's certain that Azul isn't going to throw him back, he lets out a sigh. And then it hits him.
Idia is practically embracing Azul. While his arms remain around the other boy, he pulls back enough to catch Azul with pink cheeks.
"You're so bold, Idia," he says. He's trying to sound confident, but his tone lacks the same finesse it usually carries.
"I-It's not like..." Idia bites down on his lip. Azul's grip has loosened and he can escape from him if he wishes. But he doesn't.
"I don't mind this," Azul breathes.
"Huh."
"This. Being here with you." Azul mumbles and boldly press forward, destroying the little space between them. "Perhaps you enjoy it too? That's why you don't mind me out here. Or being in my arms."
Idia fumbles for an excuse. His mind tries to think of something, but this sudden event is leaving him with nothing to work with. There was no filled heart gauges in his vision or options that clearly led him down this route. But now he's here. And instead of being the protagonist, he feels like he's the capture target. Literally.
All he knows is their lips are about to meet. He can feel Azul's breath against his skin. Smell that sweet lavender that has a hint of the ocean he comes from. At this close, he can really see how his eyes sparkle like the waves of the ocean, the moonlight making them shimmer at just the right angle.
"I-If this continues...I-I'm going to ruin this night for you," Idia mumbles just before their lips can meet. His hands grip tightly onto Azul, fingers digging so deep into his blazer that it might just rip. Azul's hesitation upon hearing him speak is enough to let Idia turn his head to the side. Pink flames end up grazing his lips instead. "Y-You don't want that."
Azul huffs and pouts. He's upset by the sound of it. What did he do to upset him?!
"And what do you know about what I want, hm?" Azul raises a hand to grip Idia's chin, making the other boy face him. Tears prick at the edges of those beautiful golden eyes. As embarrassed as he may be, those tears don't help his situation, if anything it's a pathetic sight that Azul loves dearly.
He grins, proud, and then presses his lips against his cheek.
"The only thing you can ruin is the win streak I have against you," Azul whispers into his ear. He feels the other shudder and clings onto him with a little whimper.
"Azul..." Idia feels weak in his hold. Hot, bothered. His body might just overheat at this rate. It makes him feel like he should do something, reciprocate, at the very least. But no matter how many times he clicks on the action icon, his body doesn't move.
And then his phone explodes with an obnoxiously loud song.
With some amazing force, Idia manages to free himself from Azul. His time here was up and he didn't need to be in this final boss round any longer. Idia doesn't even mumble an apology as he makes his escape. All he wants to do is get out of here and set his thoughts straight.
Azul sighs and puts a hand on his head, rubbing it. He knew 'conquering' Idia, as he would have put it, wouldn't be easy. But tonight was a perfect chance to try. He even factored in a time limit, which is why he excused himself fairly early from the party. The only thing he didn't factor in was Idia having an alarm for his departure.
It's even worse that he can still hear the tune. He wishes that he could silence it forever, and ban that single song from all of Octavinelle while he's at it.
A light on the ground catches his attention. The source of the music comes from it as well. Azul bends down to pick up Idia's phone. With a press of a button, the garden falls silent. As he sees his own reflection against the phone's screen, he chuckles.
"There's a tale just like this, isn't there? A princess running away from a prince yet leaving behind something important." Azul hums as he pockets the phone. He's certain that Idia will figure out it's missing sooner or later and this is a piece of technology that he needs. Azul knows Idia. He knows the other will try to hide from him, but with this little bargaining chip, perhaps they'll run into each other sooner rather than later.

Now I'm curious, what are some of your headcanons for the Underfell bros? I've definitely had my own fun coming up with headcanons for them and it certainly went in more of a wholesome/silly route that it's basically a separate AU at this point, but hey it's fun!
I have two underfell variants (mostly 2 anyhow), but i'll go over the nicer one jsjs.
So, the underground is not the nicest place but it's not a war zone. But resources and space are getting a bit... rough. Contrary to classic ut, Asgore is partly hated here, which seems like a random fact but it's, uh, kind of important!
There are two sides basically, monsters who are wiling to wait for the last soul to fall, and monsters who believe there are no souls and if they are they want Asgore to absorb it and get enough souls to free them all.
Undyne is less passionate about things and more done with everything tbh, she's having second thoughts about her stance on the guard, she still does her job to the best of her capacity with all the rebels running around, and trying to manage resources (somehow that ended up being her job too, she hates it). Friends with Papyrus, they are almost always working, but sometimes they call each other to rant.
Papyrus is has the role of lieutenant, which is kind of a meaningless title since he just do whatever Undyne needs. He manages sentry reports and informs the captain of the happenings in Snowdin. Everyone in Snowdin is pretty meh about him, but no one really sees him as part of the guard really.
Always busy going around patrolling, errands or paperwork, doesn't really have much time for hobbies or... sleeping jsjs. Still very much a people pleaser, surprisingly quiet and very professional... Outside of his house, that is. There are rumors that he has high LOVE, but no one dares check him to confirm it. Is it true? Well, how would I know that? ;)
Sans does a ton of odd jobs for Snowdin and beyond. Not a sentry, but has a stand of sandwiches and bones (mostly for the dogs). Because Papyrus is always bored he's the one who cooks and does laundry... But he's definitely not picking up the vacuum anytime soon.
As everyone owns him random favors, no one messes with him. Friendly, but doesn't trust anyone... He does like talking to Toriel every once in a while. Always stressed, but tries not to show it, gets sick very easily because of it tho. Loves his brother to pieces, but he's not as open about it as classic Sans. Cuts Papyrus apply slices jsjs (I had to).
Flowey is still best friends with Papyrus, they hang out in the early hours to spar. Flowey is less violent because of how the underground is, he's more tired than bored really, currently trying to survive without resetting to see if he eventually wilts or falls down, whatever happens first. May or may not be leading a rebel group for fun ;)

- Will be petty if told what to do by someone he dislikes, more than happy to do everything wrong
- Loved to mess with Undyne before she befriended Papyrus, but as time went along he didn't do it to out of actually trying to provoke her. Nowadays it's out of affection
- Loves to go to the bar to amuse everyone there, as he is rather popular Underground
- Does not blame Frisk for all that happened in the timelines, because he senses the presence of something else lingering
- Doesn't remember everything from the timelines but rather vague memories, sensations, and sometimes gets confused what's happening as a result
- Tends to zone out a lot, sometimes as if he's unsure of where he is
- The most chill in nature, it's actually near impossible to piss him off about things
- Does pranks to those he likes, it's a form of flattery and also in an attempt to make them laugh
- Finds really stupid shit funny, even if it's just a goose walking around with a silly hat
- Raised Cyperus when Gaster fell, it's why he is so supportive of him and is more than willing to do anything to make him happy
- Enjoys being in Waterfall the most, as it's a reclusive location that allows him to self reflect and get some "peace of mind" with the ambiance of the water
- He feels proud when Toriel pun battles with him, since he never had anyone Underground do it the same way she does. He was actually the one to push her to make new puns
- His dynamic with Flowey is an odd one. He doesn't know that he's Asriel, and he doesn't interact with him. He knows that he was the cause of resets, however, before Frisk fell. He knows that his faint memories of all that happened before Frisk weren't fake, but they're so tangled together that he doesn't know how to feel. He wasn't quite there for it the same way some others were, since at the time he just thought it was his imagination. Afterwards, like possibly above surface if Flowey remained the same- he wouldn't resent him. Flowey wouldn't share who he really is but the two have some tension. Sans just makes things harder for Flowey, but doesn't outright antagonize at him with malicious intent. He can sometimes get along with him, and finds him to rather be a bit of an annoying little shit. He doesn't hate him though, as he is reflective of why he did it and he gets the idea that Flowey isn't ACTUALLY evil. He is only slightly off put that he can't read him, however, since he's soulless. He gets the off put feeling though that Flowey is childish to the point that it's...almost?? Amusing??? He reminds him of a child who needs time to adapt to new things, someone who can be patient with him. It's just kinda complicated
- Can fall asleep anywhere, and I mean anywhere. He has fallen asleep in fridges, on ledges, upside down while hanging from a fan,,,,
- A proud Dunkle for Frisk, not quite a Dad but not an Uncle either
- Won't put in effort unless he wants to, which is rarely. In fact, he only starts to put in effort when on the Surface, but it's a rare occassion
- Has some of the sickest burns because he doesn't mind about hurting someone's feelings when he dislikes them. He also gets creative, so it's not just half attempts to insult someone
- Has many jobs above the surfsce. Works at the counter, sells food inside food trucks, and even is a school janitor
- Drives a tricycle around, if he's not in someone else's car he's willing to pedal all the way across a town or city if need be
- Plays trombone, not only is it a fun pun but defying logic since he's a skeleton is some of that chaotic energy he wants in life
- Protective of his brother but not to the point he thinks his brother is incapable. He raised him, taught him things, and he's proud of him. He is protective when he wants his brother to be safe, but he's not going to threaten you. He's actually pretty sincere about it once he sits you down. When it came to Undyne, he teased her somewhat and kinda pushed her limits because he knew how badly his brother wanted to be in the Royal Guard. The two eventually talked though and he worked on his communication skills when on the surface
- Made Cyperus his royal guard costume for a Halloween Party, he is happy to see his brother wear it around while Underground
- Bonds with Alphys over memes, anime, and other "weeb" activities. Both feel that "I wanna die" energy that goes well with "LMAO look at this meme" so the two can get along. He sees that she has a lot of anxiety too, and so when he visits her he tries to reassure her and distract her in ways no one else can
- He and Napstablook have bonded over laying on the ground feeling like trash together many times, he's also supportive of his music and will listen to it without getting spooked. They aren't close, but they can be considered friends
- He was actually suspicious of what Alphys was doing and actually discovered the Amalgamates before Frisk. He confronted her about it and it was the only thing he's ever been serious about, since he finds it cruel that family is separated from it. It also opened his eyes to a fear of Determination in general, which is why he's the most weary of Frisk other than the fact that they can reset. He never snitched on her, but he always would talk to her about it when it was mentioned
- Learned sign language before Frisk, as Gaster also used it when no one understood Wingdings
- Can't flirt for shit. When he's actually attracted to someone, he starts stuttering and kinda tripping over himself and fumbling. He'll sometimes run away if he messes up out of embarrassment, but it's endearing.
- Owns too many combs, in which he'll offer them if people do or do not need it
- Only does the zaza rarely, and if he's with company
- Doesn't smoke, but he'll pick one up if he's stressed enough, which is rarely
- Always napping with annoying dog when he actively decides to nap, and only then does annoying dog appear
- He embraces his laziness the most out of all the Sanses, it's a pleasure to have it
- He loves to make people uncomfortable, especially when he's bored and he wants to make weird small talk with someone to provoke a reaction
- He is a meme box, he knows all of them and makes references constantly
- When he found out that ketchup chips were a thing he found ways to enjoy his beloved outside of the condiment
- He loves french fries and hamburgers a lot, but only hamburgers from Grillby because only he can make them the way Vanilla loves them
- Only sells hotdogs or other foods that his brother makes
- Grillby and him go way back and he somehow is one of few to understand him
- A heavy sleeper, when he's passed it's like trying to wake up a corpse because even if you shake him around he will not stir
- Has reading glasses he rarely wears despite Cyperus telling him to wear them, he doesn't like remembering when he was a royal scientist
- Enjoys cooking from almost anyone, compliments them every time even if others think it's god awful
- Likes photography, hell pose if he's serious and loves photo bombing others
- Enjoys walks through the forests, it reminds him of Snowdin when he's on the surface
- Emotionally closed off despite being emotionally supportive of others, he had to when Underground because they would just forget anyways
- Video games that he plays are things such as Pokemon, Animal Crossing, or sandbox style games like Minecraft because it has minimal violence and it's more relaxing
- He dislikes formal wear, no reactions to his puns, opening up, lies, being useless, washing his jacket, and others being close minded
- The king of socks, he owns.... so many.
- Doesn't identify as asexual, but has little to no interest in sexual intimacy
- Takes all ketchup packets from restaurants and convenience stores when it's free. No one knew that he did this though until he saw a photo of him hung up saying he was banned at a restaurant because of it. Broke his soul
Closing Notes:
I have so much fun with these and I'd love to hear what other headcanons you guys have! I wanted to combine his canon character and kinda mix it in with my head canons or some that I found and loved overtime. I will later go into detail about things such as his love language and all that once I'm done really going through characters! I hope you enjoyed reading, you must've at least a little to eat this far
Thank you 🫡

i just got into the show and came across a few of your posts (sorry that this is long). i'm surprised no one talked about this more but home part 1 and 2 made little sense for why the malto kids went to philly. robbie wanting to bring them to the place he grew up in made no sense when the terrans are suppose to be in hiding.
that and i thought he was over the whole "i wanna go back to our actual home" stuff back in part 1 of this season? me and my friends thought with hashtag being linked to the internet she was going to find evidence of bumblebee being in philly or something like that.
then there's the fact that they just decide to wander about without some kind of disguise. i mean i really thought nightshade was going to pull out some devices to give them human forms. they did work with tarantulas on his device to be human so i was expecting some pay off there.
but then the humans. THE HUMANS. why are they so chill with these terrans being there??? they should be freaking out and be scared of them! none of the terrans are wearing autobot symbols so these humans don't know that they're safe to be around!
the discrimination thing been talked about a bit (should be more agreeing with you guys honestly) but really...it should be in reverse. humans have been discriminated in transformers for so long that it's crazy that the one time we get a show tackling it...and it's favoring the aliens??? the same alien species that came up with 13 different ways (actually 14 but we won't count "terran" since its already used) and 11 of them are insults!
it boggles my mind how disconnected the episodes feel! like the things the characters go through don't get mention in some way (parasites in the bear episode...shockwave's lab...) like a semi-reset is happening. still going to watch part 3 with my friends when it comes though. the show's a blast despite some of the problems it has.
Hello! I'm sorry that I'm not responding so quickly (oh, these time zones). In fact, somewhere there was an opinion that the second part of the first season is a little more chaotic than the first. And, to be honest, it feels that way. This is the effect of a sitcom, when the consequences in one episode are reset in the next.
It cannot be said that this did not happen in the first part of the season. For example, the episode "Friends and Family", where they found a cave with water that Terrans feed on, and no one mentions it anymore. "Traditions" — Arachnamechs attack, where Alex identified the technology of his former colleague. No attention. "Decoy" — remind me, what is the whole mission of Ravage? But with all this, the ratio of other plots and these forgotten storylines was such that they were not in the main focus of the stories and there were few of them.
In the second season, there were noticeably more such lines.
"Hashtag: Oops" — okay, we'll forget that the GHOST had a massive Decepticon escape with possible victims thanks to Hashtag.
"Missed Connection" — that is, caring parents did not ask themselves how and at the expense of what resources Nightshade does all these things and builds a bunker? And no one in the family either? And where did this knowledge come from in principle? Well, okay.
"Bear Necessities" — apparently the ecology on Earth is so bad that everything that happened does not surprise anyone. Although you can't say that from the narrative. "Warzone" - that is, no one wants to ask Megatron why he hid the location of Shockwave for so many years?
"Home, Part 1-2" — where to start… And, that is, we will literally forget the previous episode, where we were told that the Decepticons wanted to take over the Earth, mentioned human losses in the war and showed photos of the destruction, and then we will wonder why humans don't particularly like being next to huge war machines? I understand everything, but the parents of the Malto family are a historian and a soldier. Again, in these series, a good opportunity was missed to show the victims, for example, the parents of a friend of Robby. I have already said about the stupidity of underground fighting.
By the way, a great reminder that Terrans, in fact, should be hiding! Thanks for the tip on this plot hole! Everyone somehow forgot that the GHOST is not a small local organization, and since the children could have time to go to the city overnight, survive all this and return, then what prevents the GHOST from patrolling these territories too? Well, witnesses, maybe cameras… Moreover, the GHOST can roughly know what Twitch and Thrash, which were already on the base, look like.
It would be a very good option that they really decided to take such a risk for the sake of Bumblebee, whom they began to consider a member of the family, but did not even mention anymore after he was forced to hide again. Which is very strange for an animated series with the main theme of family and a character who literally adores Bumblebee.
There is a feeling that the authors are trying to cram everything in at once, and either do not have time to think through these storylines and twists (and why then shove them into the plot?), or do not know how and cannot do it all.
There is an option that they tried to show as many "exciting" things as possible in order to get permission and budget for the next seasons. It can also be.
Personally, I don't think the cartoon is bad, although it may seem from my posts that I hate the series. This is not true, but the second part and especially the finale have cooled my ardor for this series very much, and I expect new episodes with caution. Mainly because of the rhetoric of "humans are real monsters" and protecting the Decepticons against the background of humanity's lack of the right to be justly angry at those who brought the war. But this is interspersed a little with the personal area, so this is probably an irrelevant remark for many.
I had a hope that this series would not repeat the path of many media on transformers in relation to humans where they are useless or evil, but it is unlikely that something will change. Good human characters are only those who, no matter what, treat transformers well, and if not, then they are caricatured evil. Very sorry. Although the Malto family as characters are worked out pretty well, and this is a big step for the media on transformers. I just want some event to change their unconditionally positive attitude towards cybertronians (not Terrans).
I hope you enjoy the new episodes when they come out, I will also hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Could you write a scene with a usually stoic, medic whumpee guiding a younger caretaker, who is not used to seeing the medic whumpee in pain/vulnerable, through resetting the medic whumpee's dislocated shoulder? And the medic whumpee either passes out from pain during the reset or just generally screams, terrifying medic whumpee
Okay first off, THANK YOU! My first request, forever special in my heart.
Sorry it took a couple days, I had work and some other things to attend to outside of the ‘blr, so thank you for your patience! I hope it’s worth the wait :)
"Man, you gotta drop his ass! You can't keep letting that hipster-mustache, asshat, joke-of-a-boyfriend break your heart, Whumpee!"
"I know, I know..." Whumpee admitted, bending down to to grab another crate to carry to the medic facility on base. There had to be at least a hundred, fifty pound crates laying in the desert sun waiting to be inventoried, but for some god-forsaken reason, the Commanding Officer only assigned Whumpee and Ricky to the task. Probably payback for the uh... misconduct... they got into last week. But hey, what the hell were they supposed to do? They couldn't just pass up an opportunity to get under the CO's skin.
Whumpee grunted, heaving the next crate up to his hip. "Hey what about your girl, Ricky? What was her name again? Kath.. No. Kelly! Oh that's fuckin right, Kelly!"
"Bro, we talked about this. She's in Europe finding herself or some shit." Ricky huffed.
"Yeah, finding herself a dick with an accent." Whumpee teased, playfully smacking Ricky on the shoulder with his free hand as they made their way back to the med building.
Ricky had been in-country for so long the soles of his combat boots were damn near worn through. There was no way his girl was still with him. Whumpee had served his time in this hellhole a close second to Ricky, and the two were just about the best medics in Afghanistan, second only to the CO. Although most would argue that the commanding officer didn’t have nearly the balls on him as Ricky or Whumpee - those two were batshit.
Whumpee pressed his back into the clinic door, pushing it open. He grinned and nodded to the receptionist, leading Ricky towards the back of the clinic. It was a ghost town with the rest of the crew off training. The smell of alcohol and saline filled Whumpee’s nose, sterile and yet so familiar. This was his wheelhouse. He know this place inside and out.
“Ya know, Kelly was a damn bombshell.” Whumpee mused.
“Man, shut the hell up, she’s still my girl. And at least she didn’t cheat on me in my own house.” Ricky dug an elbow into Whumpee’s side, smirking.
Whumpee rolled his eyes and lazily stacked his millionth crate in the supply room.
“Hey, how long do you thing the crew’s gonna be out?” Whumpee asked, changing the subject from the sore spot that was his boyfriend back in the states.
“Long enough to get a good long break from your sorry a-“
One minute the clinic was empty and quiet, and the next, dust and glass were flying through the windows, ushered by a rush of hot air and a head-splitting boom.
Whumpee heard a ringing in his ears as his eyelids fluttered open, squinting painfully at the light streaming in from the hole blasted into the roof of the clinic. The entire west side of the building was collapsed, sending a cloud of dust and debris showering the rest of the building left standing. He saw someone outside the building sprinting towards the scene looking equally concerned and terrified.
“Hey! Hey! Does anyone need help?! Call Out!” The stranger hollered, nearing the blast zone.
Whumpee finally got his bearings and groaned as he lifted his head off the floor, rolling onto his side. As soon as the weight shifted onto his shoulder his vision went white, pain exploding from his arm, shooting like hot lighting down his arm and deep into his chest.
“FAaaa-!” Whumpee screamed, he felt as though his right arm had been torn from his body by a branding iron. Tears welled in the corners of his eyes, and he rolled onto his back, pressing the back of his head into the tile. He heaved, trying to control his breath, but the pain choked his lungs.
“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. Are you okay? Please, oh my god, please be okay.” The stranger had found their way to Whumpee, and was kneeling over their writhing body, hands trembling, with not the slightest clue what to do next.
Whumpee stifled another yell of pain, and asked through gritted teeth, “Wh-, Who the fuck... are you?” He panted through his words, shooting a glare at the squeamish child hovering above him, a kid without the slightest clue of combat medicine.
“Uhm...” the kid muttered, still out of his element in the chaos, “M-my name is Caretaker... I just got here two days ago and I haven’t ever done anything like this before and really I hadn’t even been assigned a bu-“
“Kid.” Whumpee cut off, “Put your panties together. This is War. You’re gonna see some shit, now pull yourself together.” The pain in his shoulder was beginning to ease, so long as he didn’t move an inch. He knew it was dislocated, possibly also torn, and definitely had involvement in the surrounding muscles, but he needed it reset if he was going to find Ricky in the rubble.
Caretaker nodded and took a deep breath, “ok ok ok, sorry.” Another deep breath.
“Okay. Good. Now, I need you to reduce my shoulder.” Whumpee explained, staring Caretaker in the eyes to see if he would even have the nerve to try.
“No. No way. I’ve never done that before, what if I hurt you?”
“Kid, you can’t make this worse. This is as bad as it’s gonna get without getting blown off. Are you gonna accidentally blow my arm off?”
Caretaker shook his head, eyes wide.
“Good. Now, I’m gonna tell you what to do.”
Caretaker steeled himself.
“Okay, I need you to help me sit up, and please, for the love of God, don’t touch the shoulder.” Whumpee pleaded, watching Caretaker nod once again in response, and he wrapped their arms around his torso, helping Whumpee gently into a sitting position. The pain of moving was once again disorienting, but Whumpee swallowed down the nausea, breathing heavily through his nose. He braced himself for the next step.
“Perfect. Great job. Now, you see my shoulder, how it doesn’t look quite right?”
“Yeah, I see it.”
“I need you to pop that protruding bit back into the socket. It’s gonna suck for me, but you have to shove it hard.”
Caretaker cut his eyes to meet Whumpee’s, as if to ask, “are you sure?”
“Ok, place that hand...” Whumpee pointed with his good hand, “...here up near my neck, and grab firmly around the deltoi- my upper arm, with your other hand.” Whumpee grunted at the weight of caretakers hands now encompassing his bad arm. “Now-“ he groaned, “hold me still and shove that son-of-a-bitch back in.”
Whumpee panted, waiting. “Now!”
Whumpee’s pupils went to pinpoints as the white hot pain returned, threatening total darkness. Electricity tingled in his fingertips as he screamed.
“Oh god! OHMYGOD! Did I kill you? Oh please be okay! Please be okay!”
Whumpee’s chest shuttered with his heaving breaths as he clung to consciousness, blackness crept into the edges of his vision. “I’m okay.” He breathed, “I’m okay, you did it.”

You know if you've read about what happens in the Adventure Time series finale, especially regarding Ice King, how would it effect your Ice Queen Marcy AU? Would Marcy have eventually managed to become human again without dying of age automatically? Would Anne and Sasha be the same age as Marcy physically by the same she became normal (meaning age difference wouldn't be a problem for shipping)?
I think I know the broad strokes? Some god being descends to end the plot. Resets the crown and frees Simon from its influence?
I definitely would have Marcy free by the end of the AU, but I think they would use some other wish macguffin. Probably Prismo to free her.
So in an earlier ask I established Marcy went full witch queen around age 20. I'm gonna stick to that cause I think the Marceline aspect of this Arc is one of my favorites
As for shipping, you know I started typing this picturing Sashannarcy... but honestly I think the only real options for me would be for this to be either a au where the trio are platonic or for this to be a Sashanne AU. As to why lets look at our options
Unattuning from the crown reverts Marcy to her physical and mental state when she attuned to the crown(13/13). Here the story would last around 1 year Bad This effectively removes Marcy's relationship with Marceline and would feel unsatisfactory. I love baseline Marcy for her potential but I don't want to effectively erase her arc just so shipping can happen.
Unattuning from the crown reverts Marcy to her physical state of when she attuned, but mental state of when she lost her mind. Again Story would last around 1 year (13/20). Bad This is where you get to that weird Marco Diaz territory of having an adult in a childs body. Always weird. Always bad
Unattuning from the Crown reverts Marcy to her Physical and mental state of when she lost her mind (20/20). I think this is the best and most interesting option. But for shipping Marcy with the girls, the story would need a timeline of like 5 or 6 years to get them all within the age ballpark of each other. Difficult Writing that much material without egregious timeskips would be a herculean task. Finn Adventure Time went from age 12-17 in 10 god damn seasons. I think this option would absolutely kill the pacing of the AU. Plus like all three of them would be massively different people by the end of it with wildly different lived experiences. Marcy spent her teenage years basically raising a child and savaging ruins in the wake of armageddon. Anne and Sasha spent their teenage years basically growing up as the kind of adventurers Marcy fantasized about. Like stay friends, care about each other? Absolutely. Dating though? I think it would feel forced.
Ultimately I think the timeline I imagine this story happening on would be like 2-3 years tops. Putting a Anne and Sash at 15-16 and absolutely in the weird zone for them all to be dating.
I think their relationship just has to change.
Honestly I think the most interesting option would be to leverage several of those times when Ice King manages to break free from the crown to establish a new dynamic. I think there would be an episode like that when Anne and Sash are still 13, and something just clicks in Marcy's head as she reckons with the fact that "Holy shit, they are about as old as Marceline was when I went under." and that just flips a switch and she can't see them as potential partners ever again.
I think we end up with this fascinating dynamic. I think Anne and Sasha bond in their quest to save Marcy and that does turn romantic. Do to aforementioned switchflip, Marcy is just genuinely happy for them. and spends a lot of her time split between exploring Ooo, visiting the girls, and visiting Marceline. I don't have anyone in mind to ship with her atm since most named characters are under 18 from what I can tell?
Anyways, those are my thoughts. Obviously you could tweak various parts of the AU to make it not weird for Marcy to date the girls, but for my take? I don't think it works

Character reference: Clockwork
Tumblr media
Art by @ectoplasmicsoda !!!
-Okay I need to start off by thanking Soda profusely for this bc I literally handed them the most basic inspo. sheet and they took it and ran with it in a direction I didn't expect and it looks FUCKING AMAZING??? Like BRO. All the little details and embellishments you added just really pull the design together and I'm in awe bud, ILY SM <3.
-ANYWAY, let's get to it!
-I feel like the fact that Clockwork can fight with a scythe is something we forget about and the more I was thinking about it the more I was like..."but what if...grim reaper?"
-So along with being the Spirit of Time, that's also what he is. The Grim reaper.
-I really like the idea of Clockwork and The Observants having a sort of dual nature, so while they both watch over And protect their respective dimensions, the Ghost Zone for the Observants, and the human realm for Clockwork, they also have the ability to destroy aspects of them. It's a give and take.
-At first I wanted to make parts of him actually be just exposed bones but then I thought about it and was like...mmmm nah tattoos are cooler.
-The Tattoos cover all of his body, not just what you can see rn.
-Does he have legs or a ghost tail? Probably depends on the day honestly but nobody knows regardless! Bitch just glides everywhere like a fuckin' Roomba or some shit.
-He/They <3
-When he laughs it sounds like ticking and if you somehow manage to startle him his clock chimes super loud
-Does not like to deal with people. Or ghosts. Has his lair anchored at the bottom of The Depths of the Ghost Zone exactly for that reason
-Got his scar from Pariah Dark in the process of overthrowing him
-Him and the Matron/Observants are core bonded but their relationship has really deteriorated over the last few centuries, especially after Pariah was sealed away and it's honestly...just really not great. They still love each other, it's just far too similar to the way a moth loves a bug zapper, now.
-It's not exactly one sided either, they're horribly codependent and equally destructive towards the other, bc they're both control freaks with vastly different ideas about how things should be managed.
-His relationship with the rest of the ancients (Nocturne, Vortex, Undergrowth, Pandora) is marginally better, he's well aware of his short comings, but he did do his best to parent them and they recognize that, at least. His relationship with them is strained after Pariah, (he was a tyrant, but he was still family) but still, it's nowhere near as bad as it is with the Observants.
Ghostly Abilities / Skill set.
-Standard ghost powers: Flight, Invisibility, Intangibility, Ecto-Blasts.
-Spectral body manipulation: Limited to shifting lower half from legs to ghost tail.
-Chronokinesis: The ability to manipulate the flow of time. Clockwork can make any given point in time pause, speed up, repeat or move in reverse. These effects can be applied to all of time and space or a localized area. He is also able to reset the time line a points where branches are formed.
-Total Omniscience: Clockwork knows, and has known since his Creation, everything that ever was, is, will be, or could be.
-Time Travel: Can travel to any point in time as a silent observer. While he himself can not be heard or seen due to his being Chronolocked, this same rules doesn't always apply to others. Anyone he sends who still exists within the current timeline can interact with others when time traveling, (as well as with clockwork himself, though it would seem as though they were taking to thin air) but not without the threat of creating a paradox. Furthermore, those he sends anywhere need to be wearing one of his time medallions or they'd immediately be sent back to their designated time period.
-Attempting to become visible/tangible when time traveling, without first freezing time, results in some funky ass time warping....refer to this ficlet.
-Summoning: Clockwork can pull anyone or anything from any point in time to his present.
-Teleportation: Can teleport to anywhere withing the Ghost Zone, or the Human realm in the present moment.
-Portal manipulation: When teleporting or time traveling Clockwork employs the use of portals.the portals first manifest as a giant clock hand, opening fully as it completes it's rotation. He can also create portals between the human realm and The Ghost Zone.
-Immortality: Does not age. (In the traditional sense, anyway.)
-Age Shifting: Clockwork alter his appearance to be either older or younger.
-Supernatural Strength
-Telekenesis
-Scythe weilding: Extremely profeciant at frighting with a scythe.
-Horology: Many of the Clocks around his lair are hand made. While he considers it no more than a hobby, Clockwork is a very skilled clock maker.
Weaknesses:
-Prone to periods of Disassociation: The whole total Omniscience thing, also known as seeing every-fucking-thing-ever, all at once, can really fuck with your perception of things. Clockwork is generally okay, but in times of high stress things can get mixed up for him and his mind gets sorta stuck in the wrong time period entirely. He also looses control of his age shifting, flipping through his different forms rapidly in quick succession. It's not pleasant to watch or for him to experience, and he often needs help being re-grounded to the present. Clockwork is not easily shaken however, so these episodes are thankfully not a common occurrence.
-Core destruction: Clockwork's core resides behind the clockface within his chest. Where his core destroyed, he would destabilize, same as any other ghost. His glass panel and clock are thankfully far more durable than they appear.
-Chronolock: Clockwork himself exists outside of time, thus his own powers have no effect upon himself. He cannot use any form Chronokinesis on his own person, or view the entirety of his own possible future. Any Individuals that exist outside of the current timeline are also Chronolocked, and exist within a blind spot that renders him unable to see their futures either. (For example, Dan.)
Loss of/destruction of staff/scythe: Clockwork uses the stop watch on his staff to better direct his Chronokinesis. While he can use this power without his staff, it is far more difficult for him to keep things under control without having the staff to channel it through.
Time medallions: Clockwork's Chronokinesis won't work on individuals wearing one, as they allow the wearer to temporarily exist outside of time, making them Chronolocked.
Blood blossoms, Ghost Nip and Fermented Ectoplasm: Blood blossoms will give him a severe migraine. Ghost Nip and Fermented Ectoplasm, (more commonly known as Boo-ze,) just don't sit well with him. Mind altering substances often make him go into that previously mentioned disassociative state, so he simply refrains from imbibing on account of being basically guaranteed to have a bad trip.

on ‘villainy’ and varian’s and cassandra’s moral codes
for all that varian’s and cassandra’s villain arcs get compared to death they’re really more different than they are similar, and i think one of the more interesting distinctions is the characters’ moral perspectives on their own actions--namely that varian recognizes his own choices as villainous and consciously self-identifies as a ‘bad guy’ and cassandra not only…doesn’t do that but appears legitimately taken aback when varian says she’s ‘become the villain.’ from this we can infer that varian is transgressing his own personal sense of right and wrong while cassandra isn’t.
and… well with varian i think it’s pretty straightforward: he’s a kid who desperately wants to make the world a better place and make his father proud, but his impulsivity and recklessness and general disregard for lab safety foil his plans and get him into trouble. then one of his accidents puts his dad into what is essentially a magical coma and varian becomes singularly focused on reviving him--and, when he realizes that the king is more invested in covering up the problem than fixing it and his only hope lies with a zealously guarded relic belonging to the kingdom, he decides that the only way to achieve this goal is to start breaking the rules.
so he asks rapunzel--his friend who promised to help him--to retrieve some information the king is trying to steal from him, and then persuades her to help him access the sundrop vault; then when she balks at stealing it he makes it clear that he no longer trusts her and escapes with the flower. at this point he’s in the morally dubious zone; being strategic about what he tells rapunzel to make sure she helps him, spiking cookies with truth serum to sow chaos and get information he needs, and doing things that are crimes on paper but also largely victimless. i think these were things varian could probably rationalize as okay--not exactly good, but no one got hurt and he got what he needed.
except the flower’s magic is gone. he drugged the palace, manipulated rapunzel and broke her trust in him, and committed treason all for something useless because the actual magic of the sundrop is in rapunzel herself. now he’s in trouble, because he needs rapunzel’s help but his desperate measures guaranteed she won’t be willing to help him again. and this is when varian realizes that his only options are 1. give up on saving his dad and turn himself in and hope rapunzel takes pity on him, or 2. accept that no one is going to help him now and do whatever it takes to free quirin himself.
so--mutating ruddiger, attacking the city, kidnapping arianna and threatening her with encasement in amber, building an automaton army to defend him while he works--these are all things that varian feels are wrong, but chooses to do anyway because he doesn’t trust that anyone else will even try to save his father. despite his anger and his rationalizations, at the end of the day varian sees himself as doing bad things for good reasons. (“Believe me, I know/I’ve sunk pretty low” & “I’m the bad guy, that’s fine”)
and when his reasons fall through--when he fails to free his dad--he falls quickly into guilt and despair over having hurt people for nothing. he stews for a year in how unforgivable and ashamed he feels, and even when he teams up with the separatists, he’s doing it in, basically, pursuit of a reset button: he wants to take back what he did. and when rapunzel shows him that he can be forgiven, he can have a second chance, he does have people who are willing to help him and trust him again, he drops the memory-wiping idea and his alliance with the separatists without a second thought--because what rapunzel actually does is give him a way to pursue his goals without sacrificing his conscience, which is what he really needed the whole time.
now, cassandra, on the other hand…
cass is an interesting character in this regard because, while she does want to be a hero, she’s not at all altruistic. she’s consumed by her lack of autonomy and she craves not only control over her own life but also respect from the people around her--her desire to be a hero is very self-interested, at its core. and moreover she has a somewhat fatalistic view of the world wherein some people (not her) matter and some… just don’t.
moreover cassandra, despite her ambitions of becoming a guard, doesn’t so much as blink at eugene’s or the pub thugs’ criminal pasts--she is suspicious of lance at first, but on the grounds that he’s an unrepentant thief who showed up out of the blue under suspicious circumstances to ‘reconnect’ with his old partner in crime; eugene is also distrustful of lance, for the exact same reasons--and of course she doesn’t think twice about breaking the law herself. literally one of the very first things we see cassandra do is commit treason to make her friend happy. cass doesn’t care about the law, and she only wants to be a guard because she associates getting the job with having her dad’s approval and it’s also her ticket out of lifelong servitude.
on the other hand, cass does seem have a strong sense of right and wrong where people she cares about are concerned. she is constantly putting the desires and well-being of her friends ahead of not just her ambitions (e.g. in beginnings for rapunzel, or great expotations for varian) but also her own safety (e.g. risking her livelihood and home to sneak rapunzel out for the night in bea, or setting aside her misgivings about the sketchy bird people in freebird).
which is all to say--cass isn’t exactly amoral but the moral framework through which she sees the world is… more complicated than varian’s. she doesn’t seem particularly motivated to help strangers but she’ll move mountains to help people she cares about; she doesn’t care much about rules or laws except insofar as she doesn’t want to get caught breaking them, and she has this hierarchical mindset that some people matter--meaning, they get to make decisions for themselves and have people care about what they need and want--and some don’t, and that she herself is stuck in the latter category despite her best efforts to climb out of it.
which brings us to the subject of the moonstone, and cassandra’s villain arc, and why cass, unlike varian, doesn’t consider herself a bad person.
i think what it comes down to most is this: taking the moonstone is an act of defiance against not only rapunzel but also fate itself. waiting in the wings sets up cassandra’s resigned acceptance of this hierarchical order and her own cosmic insignificance, and then in crossing the line she REJECTS that same order. she’s raging against rapunzel but also against the cultural and legal and destined systems that put rapunzel on top and forced cass into subservience. she is very literally fighting for her freedom against the universe itself.
and when cass was not an altruistic or heavily morally motivated or even particularly law-abiding person before, and when her conscience has always been predominantly oriented around taking care of her friends first and herself second, and when the thing that drove her to this breaking point was her friends spitting that back in her face… well.
it’s easy to say “cass literally tried to murder rapunzel a bunch of times, how can she possibly believe she’s the good guy?”--but rapunzel maimed cass, blamed her for it, and consistently prioritized her destiny over cassandra’s wellbeing; and rapunzel represents the cosmic order that cass is fighting to liberate herself from. and while i know that the -popular- take on be very afraid is “cass is terrified of hurting rapunzel,” i submit it’s actually “cass is terrified of having to fight rapunzel, because she still believes that fate is literally tilted in rapunzel’s favor and she can’t win a direct fight with rapunzel.” that’s why she’s so scared; that’s why rapunzel seemingly deleting the red rocks hardens her resolve; that’s why she marches into corona with maximum drama and bluster and builds a fortress and tries so hard to mess with rapunzel’s head before the battle begins. she’s trying to even the odds. and that’s why, when rapunzel stomps her into the curb, cassandra’s immediate response is “i need an army.”
cassandra isn’t scared for rapunzel. she is scared OF rapunzel.
we do also see cass trying not to harm people she considers to be innocent bystanders; she uses the truth serum on varian bc she needs the incantation, but afterwards she doesn’t even bother to restrain him until after he starts pestering her, she says flat out that she doesn’t want him to get hurt when she fights rapunzel; similarly she is willing to hurt calliope to force rapunzel to comply, but--despite her deep personal dislike of calliope--uses a minimum amount of force and again verbally expresses that she doesn’t particularly want to hurt her, that it’s a means to an end and nothing more. attacking rapunzel? that’s fine, rapunzel is her enemy. attacking eugene? of course, he’s rapunzel’s closest ally. mind controlling the brotherhood? that kills two birds with one stone--eliminating powerful enemies with a vested interest in taking the moonstone away from her and turning them into allies who can level the playing field between her and rapunzel. and when she does finally snap and raze corona to the ground? the people of corona attacked her first. i think cass ABSOLUTELY sees herself as fighting a purely defensive war against people who have or will hurt her.
and this is, of course, ultimately why varian failed to get through to her during ‘nothing left to lose’--he appealed to her sense of morality and her sense of morality shrugged.
as for the thing that snaps her out of it? the moment that forces her to question whether she’s really as right as she thinks she is? it’s learning who her new friend really is. it’s the shock of finding out that she’s been allied with, confiding in, taking advice from a legendary villain, from a monster she likely grew up hearing stories about. cass takes it as a given that zhan tiri is evil--and if she’s friends with zhan tiri, what does that make her? and even then, cass is resistant to the idea that she might be a villain--“No, no, I’m nothing like you. Just because I’m pursuing my destiny doesn’t make me a bad person!”--which is, ultimately, very telling of her whole mindset. she’s not a bad guy, she’s fighting for her freedom. she’s not a bad guy, she’s protecting herself against people who want to exploit her. she’s not a bad guy, she’s just putting herself first for once.
and OAH generally, i’d argue, is not actually about cassandra trying to reconcile with rapunzel or redeem herself or be a better person, it’s… literally cass trying frantically to prove she’s NOT the bad guy. it’s “oh yeah? you think i’m a bad person? well could a bad guy do THIS? *lies and impersonates a former coworker and gets up on a stage to justify her own actions in front of a crowd*” it’s “a bad guy wouldn’t apologize, rapunzel never apologized for anything, and to prove i’m a better person I’M going to apologize! see? SEE!?”--and then everyone in corona attacks her and she goes “FINE, i’m the bad guy, fuck you all” and wrecks the place.
only then--only in plus est en vous--does cassandra get into a mindset similar to varian’s, of “i am the bad guy but if i can pull this off it will be worth it.” she’s not sorry. she still sees rapunzel as an enemy trying to get her under control again, and the only thing that’s really changed is cassandra acknowledging that she has in fact done bad things too.
and… i would argue that by the end of plus est cassandra… feels some guilt but isn’t sorry. “i’ve failed” and “i’ve done terrible things” and “i tried to prove i was more than everyone thought but they were right”--her anguish is not like varian’s anguish in RR, where he was consumed with despair because no one could possibly forgive him for the things he did. cassandra is upset because she did awful things and failed and she perceives that failure as proof of her own worthlessness. she’s right back to feeling how she felt in waiting in the wings but with a hefty new helping of self-disgust and shame for having been stupid enough to believe she could change anything for herself.
she’s not sorry. she’s not pleading for forgiveness. she just wants rapunzel to give up and leave her alone--& then, after rapunzel convinces her that she’s wrong, and she does have worth as a person, and she does have a destiny of her own, cass does what’s necessary to clean up the crisis she created and then… just bounces. she gets the freedom she wanted and leaves without a backward glance.
(which. good for her.)
tl;dr: varian’s villain arc explores his moral scruples and what it takes for him to be willing to ignore them, whereas cassandra’s villain arc explores her incendiary reaction to a lifetime of injustices; she isn’t amoral but her sense of right and wrong is, unlike varian’s, very contextual and personal. varian is a pragmatic idealist who wants to be lawful good but is capable of setting his own morals aside in pursuit of a goal he considers to be important enough, and cassandra is one radicalizing incident away from realizing that her grievances are not a unique personal failing but a systemic problem and then leading a class uprising.

Supergirl 6x07 Fear Knot
For the longest time, the award for the most self sabotaging show went to the X-Files. Refuse to act on stellar chemisty? Make the characters fit the plot? Hide the main plot and then disregard it? Give no time to the trauma characters endure? Make everything about a white guy that really should stay dead? It's all here. The showrunners may try and make the actresses look bad by praising scenes in upcoming episodes only to cut them out, but the blame lies firmly in the drifting filler decisions of whoever thought this was okay to write and film, not just this episode but the whole of 6A. Where's the consistency, the emotional through line, the plot that's about Kara? Where's the excitement, the emotional payoff for six years of build up... to what?
The plus points of this episode are David Harewood's third time directing, where atmospheric and off kilter framing portray the sense of the Phantom Zone. Another plus point is everyone's stellar acting with whatever material they are given. They have the range but it's seldom stretched by the script (take the grass, anyone?). Dansen rocked this episode, though I am concerned that it's only been a week in show time that Alex asked Kelly to move in with her, as we've had three days waiting for Nia and Brainy to come back from 2009 Midvale.
That's about it for the good points. The episode resetting itself every few minutes felt like a microcosm of the show, and as such there's no emotional consistency for me to follow. All these fear scenarios happened in isolation, and it's unlikely the characters will ever talk to the other characters about what scared them the most. Lena and Nia had the most consistent fear. Nia fears her slow interpretation of dreams will get Brainy killed. Lena is still dealing with family baggage of survivor's guilt with her mother drowning. This was previously only known by a volunteer for a science project that promptly died (season 4), but it adds to the audience's feelings that Lena would rather drown by being dropped into a reservoir than harm children (season 3), and the self torture of Titanic being her favourite film.
The men were unaffected by the fear, for the sexism. J'onn saves the ship. Brainy has a new analogy of compartmentalised feelings, replacing little boxes with balloons waiting to pop. It does make sense as he temprarily made himself forget Kara's identity when interrogated by the truth seeker. Personally I would have thought J'onn's biggest fear would be abandoning his found family, the way he escaped White Martian occupation. I would have thought Brainy's biggest fear is turning into his ancestors and bottling planets. But hey, we're only going to torture women. Kelly shows the greatest emotional strength, recognising it's a dream thanks to her mental health specialist training and picking up a 'guardian' shield to protect the women she loves. It's a pity Alex won't know about the depths Kelly loves her. Lena is the second most adept at overcoming fear, by showing her kelpie folklore nightmare compassion. Nia doesn't recognise all of the dream as such, and it's just her and Brainy in the end. Alex is so far gone that she self-sacrifices to save those she loves, so her biggest fear is being a compromising element to the superfriends, specifically being unable to save Kara and protect Kelly.
The episode is a similar set up to the 100th, where we have four scenarios with high emotions ultimately for naught, as in the final moments Kara does something unrelated to what the audience has seen for 40 minutes. If the 100th was a treat about the world being fundamentally altered depending on how Supercorp get on, being sabotaged by Kara given an emotionally damaged woman an ultimatum of "forgive me for treating you badly or I'll leave you to your family abusers". This episode was an exploration of the supporting ladies having none of their deepest fears involve Kara, because she's not shown, not even in GCI watery outline. This is in contrast to the previous episodes where people have gone to emotional extremes to get Kara back from the Phantom Zone, with Brainy breaking down and comfort eating, to Nia getting despondent about her dream interpretation, to Lena ready to sacrifice the world to repopulating phantoms to get Kara back, to Alex and J'onn having to rely on their military training to keep it together. Six episodes of build up, to have four 10 minute segments unrelated to Kara, with the exception of J'onn and Alex arguing about who is her touchstone early on.
Yet, even this is disregarded as Zor-El becomes her hope speech. The guy has barely had screen time, and previously his stone function was being a dead weight I couldn't wait for Kara to cast off. This guy made the Medusa virus, was married to someone who sent innocent people to an indefinite torture, only thought of saving his hometown rather than challenge bureaucracy to stop environmental degredation, thought his daughter would be fine as a teenage parent on an alien planet. He gets a longer hug than any reunion with the superfriends, and it's only Alex that gets a half second hug that was apparently cut and originally included J'onn. The reason given was the sense of urgency of the Phantom Zone island being ripped apart by the anchor, but I remember Mon-El having a prolonged goodbye scene when he should have died from coughing lead. Given any opportunity, the show will make things about men, especially white men. The trailer to tide us through the hiatus was framed around Zor-El acclimatising to Earth, with a blurry background prescense of William Dey, the show killer. It's season 2 all over again, the comedic relief eroding Kara's progress. He should be sent to Argo immediately, so the show can be about Kara, and unpacking her trauma.
There's been filming spotted this week of Katie McGrath with Staz Nair. She's holding a battered book that an audience looking for consistency has dubbed the folklore book Lena's mother read to her as a pre-four year old. Worst case scenrario, William's presence with Lena may be them romantically dating, as it's not the first time Lena's had Kara's romantic cast offs.
Want a Supercorp parallel? While Kara's been in the Phantom Zone (around the Nyxly hijinx) she's told us her biggest fear is people she loves dying because of her. Lena and the audience actually see all of the superfriends die. Want another parallel? Both Kara and Lena are saved by their parents. Another? Nia's supersuit was made by her romantic partner Brainy, and Lena makes Kara's suped up suits. Nia and Lena really big on bonding over their dead mothers and how lucky they are to have their found family, for the audience at least as I think it falls into the individual dreams. Indirectly, Kara's called Lena family as that's what she says upon seeing the sun bomb and Lena created it.
The show is really not being subtle about sci-fi and fantasy references this season, with Harry Potter and Alien nods abound. It's like they decided they wouldn't follow through on anything they created regarding Kara and women, and hoped we'd appreciate being reminded that other shows do far better.
Apparently Kara really doesn't have to worry about leaving Earth unprotected as M'Gann is doing it by herself. And if J'onn was immune to the Phantom Zone, then he could have gone on his own without subjecting everyone else to their isolated fears.
Kinda concerned that the canon romances got killed in the fear dreams - both Brainy and Alex get blown out an airlock while their queer partner watches helplessly. Glad M'Gann wasn't here for that.
I want to know what it's like to live next to the Tower. Do you think they take bets as to what's happening next? People fly out of it, spaceships pull up to the balcony, and now the whole top section flies off and disappears into a dimensional portal. Said portal is opened by Lena as a sign of trust to use the projector. This bonding by Lena with the superfriends is appreciated. Though the DEO blew up so I don't know how she got the plans or equipment for the sun grenades (season 2) to make the sun bomb. Everyone's got magic money stashes, and Nia's had a three day absence from CatCo without reprimand.
Gonna be a long wait until August.

Jon Renish (Foundation Technical Director @ BioWare, working on DA4) recently did a Twitch stream where he played through some DAO. Although he works on DA, this is his first time playing through DAO. He’s playing through it looking at random details from a dev perspective as he’s currently working on DA4 and therefore wants to know more about the previous games.
On the stream he mentioned some tidbits on the development of DA4. There were also some insights and anecdotes about the development of DAO and similar. It’s a 3 hour stream so I collected them here in case that’s of use to anyone (for example not everyone can watch streams which don’t have subtitles/captions). The stream is a fun/interesting watch though, so if you’re curious or able to watch I recc doing so. 😊 The rest of this post is under a cut for length.
Please note that there’s some paraphrasing on my part, this is not a transcript.  There are also some additions from another dev who featured on the stream to give some commentary. The stream also contains more snippets that at times I couldn’t make out (I tried my best!).
(There is a mention of Cullen’s VA in the text below.)
DA4
Jon said he can talk about things about DA4 that aren’t “consumer-facing”, but he can’t say anything about the game that would be consumer-facing but which isn’t already publicly available. There are several reasons for this. One, that’s not his job, there are people whose job this is and they let each other do their respective roles. Two, BW are a publicly-traded company, so if he said something that could affect that that would be insider trading. Three, they’re not done making DA4 yet, so if he said that they have added [x] to the game and people got all excited about that or pre-ordered on that basis, but [x] ended up being cut, people would be like ‘BioWare lied to us’, when it’s just that things changed during the course of development, as is often the case
He’s glad that fans are excited for the game but notes that fan expectations are always double-edged. It can be really tough as some people started ‘playing’ the game in their heads as soon as they heard of it. That’s fine, he loves that, but he hopes that peoples’ expectations don’t turn into requirements. Clearly BW have alluded to certain characters, like Solas, being in the game, but some fans say things like “If [say] Morrigan isn’t in the game, then, rahhh!” Y’know, there’s a lot of talk about how certain characters have to be in the game, and yeah.
On characters which are quantum (i.e. characters which can die or which can have similar end-states as death in previous games): their being quantum makes it really hard for the devs to work with those characters in subsequent games. The devs naturally aren’t going to put as much effort into characters which could have died previously. A character can have had an amazing appearance throughout/role in a previous game, but if there is a risk of something happening to them and of them being removed [effectively] from the plot, it just doesn’t make sense to have them as a major character in a subsequent game. If a character can, say, sacrifice themselves in some glorious ending, the devs have to make sure that if they use them again, in worldstates where the character didn’t do that, the character is kind of ‘muted’, as the devs don’t want to disrespect the players who made a different choice
A comment in chat expressed a wish for Shale in DA4. Jon’s response is that he has no idea on that front
Bugs don’t come out of crunch, they come out of development in general. Crunch does impact on the quality of a game though. In recent years BW are always really trying to reduce crunch, they’re currently working really hard to bring it down. The best way of doing that is by controlling scope. As creatives it’s tough to balance wanting to make great stuff and be industry-leading with the desire to constantly do extra passes over things they’ve created like the audio, art etc. Their biggest enemy is time, other ways of reducing crunch or time spent in general include iterating tools to make often-repeated processes as time-efficient as possible
I think the following was an observation on the industry in general as opposed to a BW-specific/-exclusive comment: he thinks that as a result of this sort of thing [working to reduce crunch], a lot of games are going to have to be smaller and a lot more focused in scope i.e. the devs will have to focus on hitting the key selling points of that particular game/series as hard as they can, and cut down on branching out sideways/wide on a bunch of random other stuff
Jon doesn’t personally engage in character creators in games, but he knows that for some players that expression is worth a lot of time and focus. BW want to be industry-leading in this kind of stuff as it’s something which is interesting/key/integral to their games
In a way BW have made their own nest of problems what with every DA game being so different to the previous one. Still, he notes that each game has a staunch fanbase that says that their particular favorite game is the best one in the series
He doesn’t want people who think that DA4 isn’t what they want to buy it and be upset - there are so many other great games out there! BW are going to make the game they’re going to make - if some people like it, that’s great, and if some people don’t, that’s cool. Sometimes waiting until reviews are out and/or really seeing beforehand if a game is something that you want [has things/features in it that you want] prior to getting it - as opposed to jumping right in or pre-ordering - is a good idea. Fans don’t always know what they want, but they do know what they like - these are 2 different things
He hopes that whatever they ship for DA4, people go “I enjoyed this experience”, and that then, if there’s additional content for it down the road, people can decide, “do I want this further content?”
On hair: BW are using the new hair technology in the latest version of the Frostbite engine, so they’ll see what they can do! This was said in response to a comment about the hair in the latest FIFA games (as EA make FIFA)
A comment in chat asked about a flying mechanic (griffons). Jon’s response is that flying is such a heavy gameplay mechanic that you can’t put it in a game without everything in the game being built about it (see Anthem)
Relating to the above comment, in DA4 mounted combat would be cool but then they’d have to make the game ‘around’ mounted combat and make the mounted combat feature meaningful
On the underwater concept art: it should not be interpreted as a promise of gameplay. BW have amazing artists who sit down for a couple weeks while they’re in early production and just draw loads and loads of all kinds of stuff. Concept art is like a moodboard or Pinterest board. Elsewhere in the stream he advised, take all the concept art together like a mosaic and ask, ‘what is the overall theme[s] here?’, and to zoom out from individual details. [This stuff echoes PW’s word on concept art]
BW don’t generally write things or the choices as bleak as the choices in DAO were anymore. This is a conscious choice on their part, they want their game to be fun [note: this was said when the side quest in Orzammar where the Warden has the option of convincing a dwarven mother to abandon her young baby to die was being played through. It seems to refer to intensively grimdark choices/beats of this kind]
I think this was more of a general comment on games: SSDs (solid state drives) mean that players will see shorter elevator rides (Mass Effect - was this a reference to the remaster?) and fewer switchback corridors (those are actually loading zones). Generally, these are going to change mechanically the time it takes to do stuff in games
The devs have lots of features on their backlog that they’d like to offer players but each will ofc involve implementation and subsequent maintenance, and each one that is chosen to add is being chosen over something else. And sometimes, it’s hard for them to tell if [x] feature or [y] feature would be better to add to the game
They’re about to work on a giant feature (a pure tooling feature, something that isn’t consumer-facing) that is probably going to take ~2 staff years of effort [I think “staff effort” includes multiple staff working concurrently, so 2 years of staff effort doesn’t = 2 years of time chronologically] to get done in the next few months. They’re investing all this effort across the people working on it because they don’t want their artists and designers etc to have to deal with the problem that it’s going to solve anymore. I’m not sure what this feature is but elsewhere in the stream they referred to tooling and automation and gave the example of, the better your tooling is, the fewer times you have to manually set the camera for a human vs elf vs dwarf position, for dynamically-generated [cinematic?] content and for the first pass to be automated (if this is the case, less time is spent/wasted on redoing it and manually touching it up) [see last bullet point in this section]
He doesn’t know how big DA4 is going to be but said “let’s ballpark and say like most games it’ll be somewhere between 70 and 100 GB”
If we kept our Wardens as the PC throughout all 3 games, at the end they would be so powerful that it’d be a bit like “Let’s just do [thing], I’ve killed gods before, whatever”. He thinks it’s good that they have fresh characters each time in DA in order to reset that power level. Some people want more Commander Shepard in the next Mass Effect and he feels like, ‘what else could you possibly want / what else could that character possibly do after 3 games?’
When asked how much freedom he/they have now to focus on next gen, he said that there’s actually almost no difference on that front. The problems never change. They now have better renderers, better ray-tracing, better graphics cards etc, but they have always made DA games for high- and low-spec PCs, so it’s actually about gameplay systems. The freedom isn’t power-based and them getting access to more cores and more RAM generally isn’t going to change how the games are played. The games still have to be made for hard drives on PC. Dev creativity matters more than power here. The challenge of building a BW game is more about/from managing loads of different plotstates, loads of different art pieces, etc
On the title situation (two): names are the last thing they worry about because names have to go through legal before being approved. Every name, including character names, has to be checked in case it’s a famous person, or associated with something bad, or offensive in a different language due to localization etc
They don’t do face scans of people with big beards
There was also a bit about changes/developments to/in the cinematic design process and associated tooling [?] but I found it too hard to follow sorry >< This bit of commentary begins at timestamp ~ 1:52:45 and continues til ~ 2:00:05 [keep listening through the bit where they pause for a cutscene]
General BW
There’s currently ~350 staff in Edmonton, ~200 in Austin and more elsewhere
He notes that DA games sell pretty well, but relative to EA games in general, they’re a drop in the bucket compared to FIFA
DAI
5% of players of DAI never created a character [Q: does this refer to people who just used the default appearances/presets with no editing, or people who only played multiplayer?]
The mounts don’t actually go faster than running, this is an illusion
I think they said it has 55,000 lines of dialogue. [I’m pretty sure I remember devs elsewhere saying it has 80,000 lines of dialogue]
One of the companions had to have their name changed during development because of legal/translation reasons. It sounds like the original name sounded too close to something offensive
DA2
Back when DA2 was internally code-named “Nug Storm”: this was at the beginning when it was pitched to the team on a set of slides. The image on the slide for that pitch had devil horns, a metal hand and no flesh, it was just made out of fire and flames
DAO
The engine DAO is made on is the third engine that they tried for it during development. [David Gaider has gone into the DAO engine stuff some on Summerfall’s series of DAO playthrough streams]
The cracks on the cracked eluvian asset are modelled after the crack on the Tardis in Doctor Who from around that time, as at the time some devs had been talking about Doctor Who a lot. A dev actually added this factoid to DAO’s entry on TV Tropes but someone else (evidently not a DA dev) came by and deleted it saying that it was too much of a stretch x)
Before the game had its name there was an HTML script that randomly generated possible titles for consideration, it adds verbs and nouns together e.g. “Grim Dark”. One of the craziest possibilities that it once generated that the devs always remember is "Bone Wind”
One of the portraits that’s used for decoration around the world in-game (it’s of a bearded human man) is actually of a specific BW staff member
He played through Stone Prisoner, where Wilhelm’s son Matthias gives exposition in the cellar. Matthias is voiced by GE and this had been pointed out to Jon earlier on. Jon: “I don’t think that character’s voice acting was super strong there”
On the in-game area towards the end of Stone Prisoner: Outdoor areas in games are large and one of the things needed for them is streaming, so different chunks can be ‘streamed in’. There’s a tower [?], and technically the top of the tower was made an outdoor level so that sky stuff could be there, though it didn’t really need to be. The person that made it an outdoor level chose the very smallest chunk size for the terrain mesh, which determines how fine of a streaming they do. So when playing, every time you moved like 4 meters, the game would stream out 50-100 chunks behind you and the same in front of you (this is the bubble around the player of what actually exists). Because it was so small, it was constantly thrashing the CPU and disc to do all the loading. The devs were like “this isn’t going to work”, but they barely had any time. The solution: they made a new level that was outdoor and copied all the sunlight and other settings, but with the largest chunk size. They copy-pasted the entire level from one to the other. The problem with that many chunks then is that there was a giant expanse of flat terrain sticking out of the middle of the tower. They didn’t know if the story was going to involve shots of the outside of the tower for this sequence or not, so they took the terrain deformation tool and bundled all the terrain vertices at the bottom of the tower in a giant clump. So to this day there’s a mess of vertices and twisted terrain at the bottom of the final level that probably no-one has ever seen [not sure though if this anecdote is in reference to a place in that DLC or somewhere elsewhere in the game?]
There were also some tidbits on Anthem, however I didn’t note them down (sorry).
If you think I misheard or misunderstood anything from this stream please let me know and I will edit/fix it. :)
(Thankyou to some of my friends who explained a tech detail from this to me.)

Can you do Shoto, Bakugou, Tokoyami, Tomura and Dabi learning their s/o was born with a heart condition but it doesn't stop them from fighting (eg. I was born with an irregular heartbeat so I'm stuck with it for life and I always have to let the doctors know say I was to need to be asleep for something a special doctor 100% has to be in the room to make sure I don't die even if the work is something small and simple)
S/O Born with a Heart Condition (BNHA Headcanons)
*GIFs not mine*
A/N: This is my first attempt at headcanons, so they might be too small or too large (or too shitty), idk (I also haven’t watched bnha long enough to meet Dabi’s character so :/). Thank you so much for the request, and I truly hope you like it! I tried to make it as accurate as possible to what I could find online, so I hope it works for you. Enjoy!

Todoroki Shouto:
If Todoroki wasn’t attached before, he sure is now.
This man doesn’t hesitate to cater to your every need, and always supports you when you want to do something out of your comfort zone.
That doesn’t mean he ever leaves your side for more than 20 minutes at a time, though.
He’s grown attached to you in a way he never thought he could, and hates to see you do something dangerous without his or a doctor’s supervision.
If you want to work out or something, he’s hesitant at first, but allows you to do so with his constant warnings not to hurt yourself and take it easy.
He’s always willing to cuddle and comfort you if your chest begins to hurt, and slowly spoons you while massaging your stomach. (His warm hand is a dream.)
You’re still growing used to having doctors watch you almost 24/7, and when you confess this to Todoroki, he hugs you tightly and whispers that he will only stay by your side when you feel up to it.
Of course you feel up to it. This man may have part-cold powers, but he’s still hot as hell.
You always feel more comfortable with him in the room, and Todoroki is always glad to be around you, taking as much comfort in your presence as you do with him.
Tumblr media
Bakugou Katsuki:
When Bakugou learned you had a heart condition, he wouldn’t let anyone near you, treating you like a glass doll. (He barely keeps it together when your doctors come around.)
Every time one of his friends would get a little too close, he would start to growl.
If someone bumped into you in the halls, you best believe he blows up on their ass, even if it’s one of his closest friends.
“WHAT WAS YOUR DUMBASS THINKING RUNNING INTO HER LIKE THAT?! I’M GONNA EXPLODE YOUR ASS INTO THE NEXT CENTURY!”
Ten more minutes pass of him screaming at that person, and at some point you have to poke him in the side to get his attention. After that, he goes Mama bear mode.
Yes, even Bakugou has that setting.
He grabs your shoulders with concern written all over his face. “What? Are you okay? Do you need a doctor or something? SOMEONE CALL THE NURS-”
You gotta smack him across the forehead just to get him to shut up. (It resets his brain a lil bit.)
Overall, even though his friends tease him about it, he’s still fiercely protective over you, and no one aside from him is allowed in your ten-foot radius personal bubble.
You hated how he treated you like a baby, always grabbing your arms to stop them before he snatched the item off the top shelf for you, or any other acts that he does for you that piss you off so much.
Like a pit bull on a leash, he barked and snapped at anyone you passed on the street as his hand gripped your own tightly.
He was your little guard dog, your furious, explosive protector, and although you often argued about how you could handle yourself, you wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tumblr media
Tokoyami Fumikage:
You already know this man perches in the corner of your room at night.
Although he trusts your doctors, he still wants to make sure you’re okay while you sleep.
There’s a desk in the corner of your room, and he just squats down on top of it like nobody’s business, keeping a watchful eye on your every move.
The first time he did it, it kinda freaked you out.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing.”
“You look like Batman-”
“Go to sleep.”
From then on, you let him just watch as you slept, used to having eyes on you as you do.
Occasionally, Dark Shadow creeps out in your dim bedroom and pets your hair gently, with constant warning from Tokoyami to be careful around you.
As your relationship grew stronger, you would find him sitting closer and closer to you every night.
(He scared the shit out of you one day when you awoke to find him crouched on your nightstand.)
Then, one night you stirred to him cuddling you in your sleep. You asked him what he was doing once again.
“I keep watch much better from this vantage point.”
You always ran a hand through his feathers while Dark Shadow’s presence slowly curled around you, and rarely found yourself falling asleep just as easy without him after a certain point.
Tokoyami watches you like a hawk, and always keeps you on your pills if you take them. He’s a dutiful boyfriend, who never hesitates in making you feel comfortable and loved, day or night.
Tumblr media
Shigaraki Tomura:
HAND MAN, HAND MAN
Let’s be honest here. We’re talking about a villain. We all know this mf kidnapped you.
He fell for you first, of course, and was initially confused by your constant doctor companions. He just didn’t like how close they got to be around you, when he had to stay so far away.
He overheard your condition, and by then he had loved you too much to let you suffer, so he snatched up a doctor to take care of you in the villain’s lair as well.
After a year of patiently waiting, he finally wore you down enough to have you love him.
By then, he didn’t even have to request you stay in his line of sight at all times. You did so willingly.
Whenever you wanted to go outside and go shopping or whatnot, he always held your hand to do so. With your doctor near of course.
He just couldn’t risk losing you, no matter how much you whined that you would be fine.
He’s just as hesitant to cuddle or touch you, but still craves hugs from time to time. Nighttime snuggles are a rare occurrence.
When they do happen, he’s a bit bitter they can’t lead on farther thanks to the unwanted audience in the room.
He definitely lays his head on your chest to listen to your heartbeat.
“Still tickin’!”
In the end, Shigaraki embraces your condition with stride, and does everything in his power to make sure you’re safe and alive.... In his home…. And in his bed ;)
Tumblr media
Dabi:
When Dabi learns you have a heart condition, he becomes ten times more alert around you.
If you stub your toe, he’s by your side in an instant, shouting about how you have to be careful.
If you bake a cake, he watches over your shoulder to make sure you don’t hurt yourself with any kitchen utensils used. You know, like a whisk.
“What if your finger gets caught and you panic and die on me?!”
Fight me on this, but blue fire boy’s attitude would flip a 180.
Out of all these guys, he’s the one who’s gonna watch over you the most, acting like a self-taught doctor.
You can’t do anything without his approval.
One time he came home to you accidentally taking a nap on the couch.
… *sigh*
Yeah. Dabi flipped his shit.
“DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE MY SIGHT EVER AGAIN YN!”
“I was just-”
“NO!”
You’re the only love in his life, and he doesn’t know what he would do if he lost you.
(Two words. Fire. Rampage.)
Just… be careful. Dabi is the last guy you want to piss off. Of course, he could never be truly mad at you, but you sure know how to push his buttons.
He, um, he typed up a list of things you could do without his supervision.
It’s two bullet points long.
1. Go to the bathroom.
2. That’s it.
Dabi can’t remember a time he was as attached to someone as he is to you, so when you throw your fits about wanting to do something on your own, he listens just about as well as a student in an online class.
“Mhm, sure.”
He just doesn’t wanna lose you, so from now on, try to stay away from doing just about anything until he’s around to witness it.

Demon Brothers First Dates!
The fluff levels are reaching new heights… I might have to write some angst pretty soon to reset my palette. Get any more saccharine and I’m going to end up writing Sunday school specials... 🙄 If anyone has any darker suggestions, hit me up.
Check out the Masterlist for more!
Lucifer
Wanna bet that he’s going to shower them luxury for the evening? The Avatar of Pride doesn’t settle for anything less than utterly obliterating what his competition could offer.
Spending money like Mammon if he won the lottery. Usually he’d be less flippant about price tags, but he needs to seem like he’s on top of the world tonight. His ego’s on the line after all.
Not above asking the MC if there’s any place in the world, Devildom or human, they’d like to see and just taking them there. No objections accepted. You want go to Paris? Then we dine in Paris, get your coat.
Gifts. Gifts. Gifts gifts gifts. Nice ones. Very shiny. Big gifts make them feel special and remind them of him when they see/use them. Better get that subliminal messaging started ASAP. They are his.
Engaging dining conversation, but may bring up work/Diavolo/or the Devildom more often than not. Man just can’t stop thinking like he’s on the job sometimes...
All the brothers would kill to know what happened/what was said but he forbids them from saying anything about it. The night can stay just between them.
Mammon
It is going to go wrong. Somehow, in some way, it will blow up in his face spectacularly. But this is still Mammon we’re talking about so it’s probably going to be a fun ride regardless.
Go to the casino, lose everything, and run like hell from angry employees after causing a scene? That’s on the table. Trying to have a romantic night, getting crashed by some XYZ person who he owes money to, then going through shenanigans to try and avoid them? Equally likely. Things just not working properly to catastrophic levels? Like it’s etched into fate itself.
No matter what trouble follows this boy everywhere. You ride with him, you ought to be down for that. But if chaos is the MC’s domain or they just like to collect funny stories, it will probably be a great time! At least in hindsight, anyway.
He’s not particularly romantic, but will be generally up for doing right about anything that the MC wants to do within reason (of course, he’s a pushover too). He probably doesn’t have a plan before they go and may just wing it based on how they’re feeling and what’s available.
Considering there is no way the date will end in the same state it started, though, maybe no plan is the best plan. Just enjoy the ride.
Leviathan
Honestly lowkey thought that all those times they would play games together/watch marathons were dates so oof. Poor boy doesn’t even know how behind he is.
Once he’s aware that no, Mario Kart does not qualify as a date night, he will try to think of things that do but mostly still in or around the House.
He might suggest the kind of cheesy things he’s picked up from his mangas/dating games. He'll try them earnestly so it would still be a sweet time.
It’s going to take some insane “Love-Sex-Magic” to actually get this guy to plan a date that goes outside of his comfort zone (i.e. in the real world). He must be either head over heels or one of his brothers challenged him to pull it off. No matter what, it’s not going to be his first choice.
If he had to think of something, it would somehow be water-based because that’s the only other thing he’s going to cling to when he can’t be in his safe space.
A beach date would actually be perfect for him. He could show off his swimming skills, make a sand suclpture with them, and introduce them to Lotan! He won’t bite, er... as long as he’s around? Probably?
Satan
Want some old-fashioned romance? This is your guy. Satan sees love like it’s out of a romance novel so make of that what you will.
Ever polite and downright princely at times. You’d never know that he was the Avatar of Wrath until things just stop going to plan or some poor waiter tries to sass him...
The kind of guy to go for dates to an art gallery or an out-of-the-way coffee shop. Some place quiet where the main focus is on conversation or intellectual discussion. But, oh, he doesn’t just want to talk. He wants to learn and the subject is MC.
Won’t settle for small talk but isn’t looking for a life’s story either. He wants thoughts, opinions, and knowledge. What do they think of the Devildom? His brothers? How do things there compare to the human world? What’s it like there? Etc., etc.
If there is anything that they’re particularly skilled/knowledgeable in then he wants to know all about it. Lowkey sapiosexual vibes. Smarts are a turn on.
Would honestly be okay going to almost anywhere as long as he’s with them and can enjoy their conversation. Expect traditional romantic elements like flowers and candles, but really it’s the mind he’s after.
Asmodeus
He wants to Show. Them. Off! If they’re on a date then the world has to hear about it. He just thinks they’re that amazing!
Need help getting dressed for the occasion? He’s got them covered! He doesn’t see any issue in couples shopping, dressing, makeup… other things...
Yeah, they better keep a leash on this one or they may miss a reservation or three.
Knows all the best places in the Devildom like the back of his hand. Want to go dancing? He’s a regular at all the clubs. Want good drinks? He knows five places for that already. Great food? Babe, he’s second only to Beel in that department too!
Will spend the whole evening being very attentive and making sure they’re comfortable and having fun. The man loves seeing smiles, especially the ones he causes!
Okay. We all know where he ideally would like the date to end *cough*the bedroom*cough* but won’t pressure the matter… any more than usual. But oh would he be happy if it got there. And he’d make sure they’re happy too. 😏
Beelzebub
They’re going to eat and they’re going to eat WELL.
We’re talking a spread fit for royalty because he would totally ask Diavolo if he could borrow Barbatos for the evening. Food from the best chef in the Devildom and time alone with the MC for a night? Talk about a spot of heaven in literal Hell!
Of course, his thoughts aren’t only on his own stomach. He genuinely wants them to have a good time too.
Will probably take them to their favorite places in the Devildom or any places where they share good memories together. He wants to remind them of just how happy they make him as much as possible.
A lot of closeness the whole night: hand holding, hugs, and cuddles. It’s not for any possessive or territorial reason, he just likes having them close in that comforting sort of way.
He’s not exactly a deep conversationalist, but he’ll make up for it in actions and just the amount of heart he puts in the few things he says. Oh, he’s one of the best listeners on the planet though so the night doesn’t have to be quiet on their end.
Belphegor
You’d think he’d be too lazy to plan a date but not so. It actually takes a lot of planning to find a way to completely ditch his brothers without any of them knowing/finding out. Even Beel has to be out of the loop.
Wherever they’re going, he wants it to be just the two of them and stay that way. It’d take just one run in with Mammon or Asmo for them to gain a tag along that Just. Won’t. Leave.
Like Satan, he prefers quieter places but that’s just because he hates being in noisy environments. He’ll go for places that may not have a lot going on, but are visually quite stunning like the botanical gardens or rooftop views.
Expect a picnic, maybe a little stargazing. He probably already knows some pretty peaceful places in the Devildom that he uses just to get some space from his brothers.
If he’s going to sleep during the date, he’ll either make sure it’s okay first or it will be an honest accident. He won’t just pass out on them to be a troll for once.
Maaay try to get them to take a nap with him. Straight up sleeping might be considered an odd date activity, but really it’s an excuse to hold them as close as he wants with no interruptions. Be careful, or he might hold them there all night.

Flynn Fenton redesign
My redesign on Flynn Fenton, I’m a bit late to the party but whatever. First one has a white background, second one none and the third one is just the line are, if anyone wants to use it to try out some different color schemes or anything. I really didn’t intend for the colors here to look as washed out as they do, but I got a new laptop and they looked really vibrant on there but looking at it now on my phone they look really pale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this Flynn is the son of Maddie and Vlad from the episode Master of all time. Maddie and Vlad originally continued research in to ghosts after college, even beginning to build a ghost portal. Flynn somehow ended up falling through the portal at some point, Vlad and Maddie actually thought he had been killed (don’t know how I’ll come up with more details later) Thinking their son had been killed as a result of their research Vlad quit the research all together not even wanted to speak of ghost, while Maddie continued it in secret. While the timeline was reset to how it was originally at the end of the episode, Flynn continues to exist in the ghost zone. I headcannon the Ghost Zone as sort of an in between dimension that exist outside of those two timelines but still runs parallel to them. So it was unaffected by the timeline reset. I haven’t decided how Misery Vex fits into this yet (I am redesigning her though btw) Maybe she has been looking out for Flynn or caring for him for a bit but idk I’m still not sure. Flynn has mostly been surviving on his own, he is still mostly a regular human. I think it would be stupid that just anyone could go in the ghost zone, stay there for a while and basically end up with ghost powers. What’s the point of Danny being a half ghost then, anyone can go get ghost powers. So Flynn is probably affected by it to some degree but not enough that he has a bunch of powers or anything. I like to think he is smart like Maddie and Jazz and is able to build some ghost fighting stuff buy scavenging for parts in the ghost zone. Maybe he’s even trying to find a way back to the human world. He basically has his own little lair which is just a place he keeps all his scavenged stuff. Since humans are basically like ghosts in the ghost zone, able to pass through solid objects, he uses that to his advantage. He sneaks around places trying to stay out of site most of the time. He has become quite skilled at fighting and there are rumors of a dangerous creature in the ghost zone that you don’t want to pick a fight with, one that picks off ghosts in a fight without hardly being seen itself. (sort of like a phantom lol) He wears the skin of a creature he was attacked by but killed. I like to think the ghost zone has its own native creatures while also having the souls of humans who haven’t passed on yet. The one he wears was native to the ghost zone and basically the equivalent to an animal on earth. He wears it mostly as an intimidation tactic because a regular human in the ghost zone is an easy target.
Tumblr media
I was trying to base his hair color more on Maddie’s sister, his Aunt Alicia. He has Maddie’s eye color and face shape and Vlad’s nose. He also has a more tall and thin body type like Vlad.
Tumblr media
He was pretty young when he went through the portal but he still remembers his parents. He also doesn’t know of all the timeline shenanigans that went down and that basically his version of reality doesn’t exist anymore. (i’m honestly gonna have to go back and rewatch that episode because I don’t remember completely what happened) So to him Vlad and Maddie are still his parents and when he does “reunite” with these characters it’s gonna be kinda awkward, also would make some great drama. This would also set him up for the possibility of a more antagonistic role for a while because I think he would sort of blame Danny for his timeline not existing anymore. (even though Danny was kind of the reason it existed in the first place)
The colors for the clothes on his kid self are based on Vlad’s in this picture.
