I know I haven't been very active on this blog lately (work has been insane) but I stumbled upon the Broth Ask again the other day, and I decided to put together a compilation of the most bonkers anon asks I've gotten since I started this blog. Hopefully this wackiness tides you over while I'm busy, lol

There we go, another switch-up of the topics! Ahhh I do love making a mess out of this 😎🔥
DAY 29
(a long way, right? but who cares. I couldn't find any motivation to any writing for today's prompt and I had to use my classic coping mechanisms - bitterness and overall saturninity towards the world today. So, a prompt very much on point - there you go! I had fun 🔥)
Saturninity
Draco pays his dear father a visit at the Manor, but has had enough of Lucius saying things about Draco's family every time they meet. And oh well, you know how Slytherins get when it comes to their loved ones, right?
"Got anything else to say? No? Oh, that's a pity. I thought we could have ourselves a nice little conversation about how much of a disgrace I am, or what poor life choices I always make, or maybe even better - the one about how I'll finally end up sad, fat and alone in an apartment full of cats, rubbish and distasteful clothes. Huh? No? None of that?...Ah. Pity indeed. Because there's that thing ever so peculiar to me every time we talk about this. Or, to be precise, when you monologue about it to me." he paused shortly for emphasis.
"How come I am always the sorry one in your eyes, when it's you who sits there all those years, your house being your prison, and all those turning out to be rather poetic descriptions of a criminal under punishment, Father...?"
There was a dramatic halt in his speech, completed by his stilled expression as he drawled out the last word.
"Or" he resumed, his tone mellow, cheerful almost. "What is it that you hold against cats? Because from what I've gathered while living in the rotten world outside - cats are likeable. I daresay cute, even."
He munched idly on his apple for a while and suddenly snapped back to reality.
"Whatever it is you'd like to say again, dear Father - Harry is my husband, and those kids are my family in the exact same way Scorpius is. Should you come up with another bright idea of putting your two Knuts into that ever again, I strongly advise you stick it up your arse instead. Might help loosen you up."
His tone was low and something unpleasant flickered in his eyes for a while, but then he patted Lucius lightly on the shoulder and with a curt "Goodbye, Father." and a quiet snap in the air he was gone.

Hmmm how about a poly oneshot with bully Draco and Lorenzo who hates the reader for being with the golden trio and mainly potter ?? They hate how touchy and blushy harry gets around their darling and vice-versa. They hate how everyone thinks you two are together and you don't do anything to clear up the rumor. They hate how you're always in his dorm and they hate seeing your lipgloss mark left on harry. But God do they love you and can't take it anymore 🤭🤭

tws: toxic/possessive/obsessive behavior, slut shaming, implied sexual content? (question mark?)
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
“Look at stupid Potter. With his stupid scar, and his stupid friends, and his stupid Y/N.”
“His?” Enzo laughs. “Y/N is not his.”
“Not if we can help it,” Draco mumbles.
The pair watches in silence as you throw a snowball at the ginger weasel, ducking behind Harry when the bloodtraitor tries to retaliate.
Harry scooped you up in his arms, like a valiant prince coming to save the day.
They can both hear your clear laugh, even from the other side of the courtyard. It makes them both seethe with anger.
~~~
“C’monnnn,” you pleaded, tugging at Harry’s arm. “I have friends other than you. I wanna talk to Luna and Pansy and Blaise.”
Harry rolled his eyes, not putting up much of a fight as you dragged him into the Great Hall.
It was a new thing this season, to promote house unity, or whatever. The heads of houses had come up with the idea; tea, cocoa, and cookies in the Great Hall every Friday evening. Everyone welcome.
The Great Hall is dimmer than usual, not all of the floating candles lit. A few dozen student of all houses mingle and meander.
A group of kids sat on a blanket on the cool stone floor, almost as if it were a picnic.
Another group had thrown blankets and sheets over part of the ridiculously long tables, creating a blanket fort underneath.
You headed straight over to where Luna was painting Pansy’s nails. They greeted you with laughter as Luna’s unsteady hand got orange nail polish all over Pansy’s knuckle.
You gasp. “Harry! Let me paint your nails! Pleaseeee?”
He shrugged, looking over the myriad of colors laid out. He picked one up and held it out towards you.
“Snitch gold, for luck.”
You laugh, accepting the bottle and pointing for him to sit down.
“You don’t need luck, Harry. You’re you.”
Across the room, two Slytherins clocked Potter’s shy grin and bright blush.
~~~
You sat down with your friends, a wicked game of truth or dare already in full effect. As predicted, Gryffindor had won their game against Hufflepuff, resulting in a very large house party. You’d noticed a few Ravenclaws around and wondered how they got in, until you saw the Slytherins, the lions’ main suppliers of firewhiskey and good times.
“I dare you…” Ginny trailed off as she thought. A wicked grin spread across her face. “I dare you to wear that failed blue glitter lipstick that me and Cho made.”
You roll your eyes. “Oh, please. That’s easy.”
“For the whole day tomorrow.”
You raise an eyebrow. “I’m not afraid. Bring it on.”
~~~ “Draco!” Enzo hissed as he harshly elbowed his friend in the ribs.
“Ow. What?” He followed Enzo’s finger, pointing straight at the Gryffindor table. “What am I looking at?”
“Potter.”
Harry James Potter was furiously scrubbing at his skin with a napkin as you, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione were all practically howling with laughter.
Sure enough, you were true to your word, wearing that ridiculously tacky lipstick that stood out like a beacon when surrounded by all of that garish red and gold.
Harry let out a visible sigh, tossing down the napkin and sitting back in his chair, arms crossed over his chest in an obvious sulk.
Right there, smack dab in the middle of his cheek, was a perfect blue stain from a kiss.
Draco’s ears burned with rage.
“Nope. Come on, Enz. We’ve waited damn long enough.”
~~~ “It’s not coming off, guys,” Harry whined.
“Why do you think we called it failed?” Ginny laughs, the blue smudge on his cheek looking quite comical. “That’s what happened when we tried to wear it.”
You snicker. “You look good in blue, Harry,” you teased, enjoying the faint blush that settled over his cheeks.
You suddenly felt a heavy hand come down on your shoulder, tightening to the point where it was almost painful.
You whirled around, surprised to see two Slytherins you’d barely talked to.
Harry sneered at the sight of his long-time rival, Malfoy. “What do you gits want?”
They both ignored him, as if he wasn’t there at all.
“We need to talk to you,” Enzo snapped, his hand on your shoulder tightening even more as he all but dragged you out of your seat.
You stumbled after him as Draco propelled you forward with a firm hand on the small of your back.
The two boys dragged you out into the hall, away from prying eyes. Draco wasted no time before shoving you up against the wall in a secluded alcove.
“The fuck do you think you’re doing, kissing Potter?”
“W-what?” You stammered, your brain not yet having caught up with the situation.
Enzo scoffed. “Whoring yourself out to anyone who blushes at you, huh?”
“What?”
“How long have you been sleeping with him, hm? How long?”
“Wh- Harry? We’re friends!”
“Friends, huh? Friends?” Enzo scoffed.
“Yes!” You snapped. “Who d’you think you are, questioning my- mmfph!”
Draco surged forward and kissed you harshly.
~~~
Enzo Berkshire, Draco Malfoy, and Y/N L/N all stumbled into Defense Against the Dark Arts twenty minutes late, their clothes rumpled and their skin stained with blue lipstick.
Death Follows
Tumblr media
pairing(s): dark!harry potter x reader, ron x hermione
summary: harry, your best friend, has been acting odd lately, very odd, deciding on one occasion to follow him, leads to your demise.
warnings: obsession, yandere, implied murder, blood, manipulation(slightly), perverted behavior(not from Harry), possessive!harry, toxicity, etc…
reader is pretty much gender neutral since I don’t describe any feminine pronouns or masculine pronouns, or feminity.
also this au has been in my mind a little bit lately lol. obviously everyone is 18+ in this. keep that in mind. dark themes ahead.
You couldn’t take it anymore. You were so worried for Harry. He was your best friend and nonetheless, something obviously was going on with him.
“Y/n, calm down, Ron said.”You’ve been worried this whole week.” “Look, haven’t any of you noticed that he is well, distant? Doesn’t tell us much? You ask. “I have but, maybe he’s going through stuff and coping with the whole dark lord thing, having to defeat him is a lot, Hermione pointed out.
“True, You say.”I guess. But, I still-“ Ron groaned, you couldn’t help but form a smile as it was kind of funny.”I’ll shut up now, Ron. At least about Harry.”
“Good, Ron replied, wrapping his arms around Hermione, they had been dating for four months now. You couldn’t be more happier for them.
“Where are you going? hermione asks. “Nowhere! You lie. Hermione rolls her eyes. “He said not to talk about it anymore! You say, outsmarting Ron.’
You walk a bit louder than you should have. At Hogwarts, Quietness was rare, and noise was frequent. Also a lot of chaos.
“Where is he? You murmur, trying to find Harry. You were so in love with him you’d be willing to do anything for him.
Sure, this could be because of the amount of pressure he has to stop Voldemort. But there had to have been something else.
Harry, was a introvert indeed, but this bad and distant? That didn’t seem like himself. When you spot him, You secretly follow. Maybe this was stalking or out of pure obsession, you weren’t obsessed with him, just in love, that was all.
You only followed his footsteps as you went to see where he went. Maybe you shouldn’t have. After all, curiosity kills the cat. But this was out of concern for your best friend, who you’ve grown up with pretty much.
You were doing the right thing weren’t you? Harry suddenly turns around and you hide. You almost had been caught. Almost. You were scared of what would happen if you were caught by Harry. Especially since he was more aggressive. That wasn’t like him. This whole situation was odd itself.
You probably would find that it wasn’t as concerning as you thought it was, or completely different to the scenario in your mind. You hoped it wasn’t the scenario you pictured in your mind.
Calm down, you’re overthinking, You thought. And yet, I feel drawn to this whole thing. What’s wrong with me? Am I truly becoming obsessed?
You were more than filled with self doubt, but you prioritized helping Harry with whatever he needed. Of course, only if it was good. Not if his intentions were corrupt.
You weren’t like that at all. And when you finally stopped where Harry stopped, but hiding a bit further so he didn’t see you, you didn’t find anything interesting, much to your dismay but relief as well.
You chuckle softly, for a moment you thought he was working with Voldemort. How silly of you to think such things.
You begin walking back to your dormitory, it should’ve been a short and swift walk, if you didn’t bump into someone.
“I’m so sorry, You apologize. “Don’t be, He winks, and in a suggestive tone. Already, making you feel uncomfortable.”Where did you come from?”
“Um, I was just looking for my friend, couldn’t find him, You lied. “What a shame, The ravenclaw said. You would’ve been surprised if it had a hufflepuff.
Truthfully, Every house had bad people in it. “I better get going…. You say. “I recognize you, He says.”Y/N right? The chosen one’s friend?” He said that as if you were more than that. Which you weren’t, unfortunately.
“Yes, now can I get through? You ask, a bit more sternly and assertive. You weren’t going to get out of this mess unless you did something. And you normally didn’t like doing that. You hated confrontation.
“Oh sure thing, can I walk you to your dorm? He asks. “Sure, I guess, You say nervously. He says his name and you say yours. As awkward as it is, maybe the feeling of someone actually being into you was nice.
Though, you knew his motives were anything but nice. Still, you’d never let it take that far. “Here is my dorm, You smile.”I hope I see… you around.” “You definitely will, He winks, leaving you to your dorm.
It wasn’t a good way either. He’d probably ask you out on a date eventually. “y/n, what did you find? Hermione asks. “Not much, You say.”But, before you say I told you so, I know he is hiding something.”
She sighed.”You are too in love to think logically, Y/N.” You scoff.”I’m not in love with him! I found someone!”
“You did? Both Ron and Hermione say in unison. The common room was empty somehow, making things better.
“Mhm, that ravenclaw guy or something, said his name was Bastian or something.”
Hermione groaned.”Y/n, he’s an asshole who’s only using you for sex!” “I know, and I’m not letting him use me, U just met him, doesn’t mean anything, You defended.
“Thank god, Hermione said. “I heard he’s hot though, Ron said. “Not the point, You say. Ron laughed and so did you.
“Ron, you have something to say? You joke. Hermione looks over, smirking. Ron blushed.”I’m not gay! I love ‘Mione!”
“Cute nickname, Hermione smiled, sitting beside him. “To be fair, he didn’t come up with it first, You smiled.
You looked proud and smug, as you had come up with it in Year 1. Hermione loved it and it stuck ever since. Though, it was a nickname only her closest friends, you, Ron(her boyfriend now), and Harry.
It got darker, and by the time you were in bed, you hear noises coming from the Common Room. So, much to your curiosity, you go downstairs to the common room. Relieved, You say,”Merlin, Harry, I thought you were something else.”
“No, just me, Harry said calmly.”You thought I was Voldemort or something?” “No, you laughed.”You came in really late. Won’t you get some sleep?”
“I’m not that tired, Harry assured you.”You don’t have to worry about me, Y/N.” “I think I do, You tease.”You need someone to look after you, Harry.”
He smiles.”Always putting everyone’s needs over your own, typical of you.” “It’s kind of how you are, You say.”Selfless, caring…” He sighed, plopping himself down on the couch.
“Harry, I’m worried for you, okay? You say, sitting beside him.”What’s going on?” “It’s nothing, he says. That’s a lie, you knew.
“Harry, I know that’s a lie, You say.”And…” you stop, looking down to see blood all over his clothes. You stand up.”Harry, what did you do?”
Confused, He asked,”What do you mean?” “Did you fall or something? Hurt yourself? You’ve got blood all over, You say nervously, about to pull your wand out when Harry took action quicker.”Expelliarmus!”
He disarmed tour wand, making you taken aback. Why did he do that? You weren’t a threat by any means. Pulling out your wand he probably assumed you’d hurt him or something.
“I’m not going to hurt you, I… I’m just a bit scared, okay? I need my wand to-“
He grabs it before you do. His demeanor, you just knew changed. “I’m not giving it back until I can trust you, Harry said sternly.
“God, you sound like my father, give it back! You say, reaching out for it but not succeeding.”And what makes me untrustworthy?”
“The fact you’re questioning me, and immediately go to your wand! Harry said. “Shh! They can hear you! You say, when he grabs your wrist, making you jump.
“You really want to know? He asks, his tone angrier than you’ve ever heard from him. You nodded nervously, more so afraid. This side of him you’ve never seen before.
Pulling you closer to him, Harry whispers in your ear,”I killed that creep.” “No… You say.”He wasn’t a creep. And how did you know?”
“I knew you followed me, and I saw it, Harry added.”I’m not as stupid as you might think, y/n.” “Okay, then what were you doing? You ask.”I know you’re hiding something, Harry.”
“Feeling bold, aren’t you?”
“Maybe, You reply, your voice filled with venom and a bit more confidence as you spoke. You never felt so confident in your life. But you had to hide your fear and intimidation of Harry.
“Alright then, Harry smirked.”I didn’t exactly lie about defeating Voldemort.” “Okay… You say. “I already killed him, he continues.”Which that makes me the new Dark Lord.”
“What? You say.”Okay, Maybe your trauma made you-“ His hand was wrapped around your throat, not choking you but he could.”I’d rather you keep your mouth shut about this.”
You somehow whimper and nodded. He lets go.”Good.” “I have a feeling there was more to murdering that ravenclaw, You whisper.
“The fact is, you’re mine, and I just made sure he knew, Harry said possessively. This side of him scared you.
“What are you going to do as the Dark Lord?”
“Destroy those who wronged me and the people I love, obviously.”
Introduction to my Hogwarts Dr Self!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey guys, it's c! in this post i'll be introducing you to myself in my hogwarts dr :) i feel it will give you guys a more in depth of my hogwarts dr. to put it out there to not confuse anyone, i have not yet shifted to this dr. i merely want to share about it so that when i do shift, you guys have some backstory <3
Tumblr media
my time ratio is 1 hr = 1 week. i'll be shifting to 4th year- a little before 4th year technically. my first day will be the day of the quidditch world cup which is also the day of my birthday! i'll wake up on an early morning at my house by my s/o (i scripted in my irl boyfriend!!). i made my bf a potter meaning he'd be harry's older brother (also because when he wears glasses i and other people say he looks like harry potter).
ps: i am shifting for the plot but i've changed it a little bit and have included myself in the story instead of fully making myself the main character. meaning i don't want to take harry's place but always somehow be connected to the things that happen.
Tumblr media
introduction + backstory
name: c(real name) authorne-lestrange hogwarts house: hufflepuff year: 4th blood status: pureblood patronus: a dragon wand type: 13 in. Ebony wood intertwined with silver, glistening unicorn hair
backstory: so in my dr, i am the daughter of leta lestrange. due to the lestrange reputation, she wants me to go by the last name authorne which was supposedly my father's name who has passed long before i was born. also so that it would make it hard for voldemort and the other death eaters to find me, due to my mother making an unbreakable vow that she and i would be by voldemorts side when the time was right. trying to imply that it's the destiny for all lestrange to serve voldemort. leta has constantly thought of any and all loop holes out of the vow. she doesn't want that life for me and so she got dumbledore to take me in at hogwarts thinking i'll be safer there.
disclaimer: i understand that the timeline between fantastic beasts and when harry exists is like a 70 year long stretch but i'm shifting to a reality to where she is alive to be my mum.
Tumblr media
my house
located: cambridge, england exact address: unknown
here are some pics of the house! go to my pinterest board to see more details or rooms of the house to get a better look. of course, the middle photo is my bedroom where i'll be first waking up in my dr! i'm really excited to wake up there and take a look around. i'm also excited to be here on break or holidays!
you may have some questions on why the address is unknown. i scripted it to be like that because i felt that's something leta would do to keep me safe. also adding to the fact, i scripted she placed a protective barrier around the whole property that leads anyone who's looking in from the outside to hear nothing and see nothing but a thick forest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my pets
their names are soren and sage! soren is my male barn owl and sage is my female cat. i'm allergic in my cr so i scripted that out so i can experience having a cat lol. i just had an idea that maybe i should script that sage fly's around on sorens back?? imagine how cute that would be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
my dorm at hogwarts
so i scripted that i have a personal dorm there at hogwarts and honestly, i'm kinda in love with the room and bathroom <3 as you guys can see here, i have a pics of my dorm! the first image, that door is the entrance into my room and then the second door in my third image is the door to my bathroom. for the last image, i added one pic of how my bathroom looks like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think that's pretty much it! i'm so excited to shift to my hogwarts desired reality and finally experience life as a wizard. i'm working on my shifting routine as of right now to help me get in the mood and get ready to shift! get ready for shifting storytimes <3 as always, Happy Shifting!
draco malfoy who did not become prince of slytherin on his first day at hogwarts, because that role was already taken.
percy weasley is the last person any outside would expect to run their house. a blood traitor with old robes and no money, no status. but a boy with ambitions and cunning to rival even his elders, one who understands the plight of those expected to be in slytherin and especially those expected to be the opposite.
when draco arrives, percy is a prefect. he wears the same robes his older brothers have, as his parents do not waste their money on their family's biggest disappointment, but he sends letters with an owl named hermes that was gifted to him by the siblings who still believe he's worth it. percy sits beside a boy named marcus flint, and both of them smile and shake the hand of every new first year. their dormmates, two boys named adrian pucey and theodore nott, do the same from across the table.
when draco comes back from christmas break shaking, when he flinches at every raised voice, percy wraps an arm around him and tells his newest snake the same thing marcus told him when he was a first year: "you got the best house."
slytherins are not friends with ravenclaws or hufflepuffs, and they certainly aren't buddying up with gryffindors. their own headmaster does everything in his power to discredit them.
"dumbledore may be brave," percy says, "but we're smarter. here in slytherin, we're a family." here, he doesn't say, we're stronger. he doesn't say it, but it's heavily implied.
severus snape is draco's godfather, percy's favorite teacher, and when a gryffindor girl named hermione accuses him of cursing harry potter, percy does everything he can to prove them wrong.
during draco's second year, muggleborns are being petrified, and draco's father is up to something. he spends his evenings in the dungeons, sobbing into his godfather's cloak, wishing he had the power to make this all better. the morning after harry potter saves ginny weasley, percy's younger sister, from the chamber of secrets, percy sits beside draco and tells him, "don't fret over things being out of your control. knowledge is power, draco. use it."
draco is fourteen when percy leaves, fourteen the first time he comes to hogwarts and the only flashes of red hair are seated at the gryffindor table. fourteen when he becomes slytherin's prince, the head of the family, the one who takes younger students under his wing. he isn't a prefect, not yet, but he is a leader.
knowledge is power, percy told him. draco uses it.
having thoughts about marlene mckinnon for way too many words
In honour of breaking up the fanon characterisation of Marlene a little, here’s every bit of information I could find about Marlene from canon, and variants of Marlene that aren't a Marauders' year Gryffindor that I think could be really fun to write! As a fandom we all seem to stick to the same few traits for the characters like Marlene, to the point where it almost creates a kind of ‘canon’ which kind of defeats the creative freedom which makes writing in the Marauders era so interesting.
And please note that this is not a criticism of fanon at all, headcanon what you want to headcanon, there are so many talented writers and artists who do amazing Marlene work within her fanon characterisation as a Gryffindor classmate in the Marauders’ year. I just had a lot of thoughts.
So anyway, here’s the three quotes we have that mention her:
“No one lived after he decided ter kill ‘em, no one except you, an’ he killed some o’ the best witches an’ wizards of the age - the McKinnons, the Bones, the Prewetts - an’ you was only a baby, an’ you lived,” - Hagrid, The Philosopher's Stone
“That’s Marlene McKinnon, she was killed two weeks after this was taken, they got her whole family,” - Moody, Order of the Phoenix
“Wormy was here last weekend, I thought he seemed down, but that was probably the news about the McKinnons; I cried all evening when I heard,” - Lily, The Deathly Hallows
Let’s get into it. Alright, so to get an indication of what Hagrid means when he’s talking about “the best witches an’ wizards of the age,” we can look at the Bones and the Prewetts.
“That’s Edgar Bones… brother of Amelia Bones, they got him and his family, too, he was a great wizard” from Order of the Phoenix. Apparently, his mother and father were also murdered by Voldemort (fandom wiki). It’s unclear whether “great” refers to magical skill or strength of character; however, we know Amelia Bones, his sister, was a fair and principled woman, so it probably includes elements of both.
“Gideon Prewett, it took five Death Eaters to kill him and his brother Fabian, they fought like heroes.” Combining this with the Hagrid quote, we can gather that the “best witches an’ wizards” likely refers to prodigal magical skill, as well as strength of character - generally acting like a hero.
So from these quotes, we can gather that Marlene was either a great witch herself, or at the very least, most of her family was skilled at magic, and that they all had great strength of character. By strength of character, I guess, from looking at the type of people the Prewetts and the Bones were, I mean that she valued stuff like justice, compassion and courage, and also, to put it simply, had a backbone and could stand up for what she believed in.
I don’t think this necessarily makes her a Gryffindor, although it does make it more likely. The Bones family was known to be affiliated with Hufflepuff (Susan Bones), and people of every house can exhibit these traits. Although still very much possible, I find Slytherin to be the most unlikely house for her, as Hagrid does tend to harbour certain biases towards Slytherins (i.e. he tells Harry that there wasn’t a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn’t in Slytherin) so would be less likely to describe a Slytherin-affiliated family in such a positive manner. However, realistically, all four houses are open options for Marlene.
Now, onto her relationship with Lily Evans. Lily does not refer to her by name, only as part of a collective “the McKinnons,” implying that to the extent Lily knew Marlene, she was also associated with more than one member of the McKinnon family. Her death is also mentioned in a throwaway sort of line, as an explanation of Peter’s sadness, meaning she had to be somewhat close to Peter for it to be reasonable that he’s at least as sad as Lily about her death. This also reads like it’s the first time Lily has discussed her death with Sirius, and it’s been about a week. This, to me, seems to indicate a relationship that isn’t necessarily very close, more like coworkers than anything - if they were closer, I think we could expect more of a specific comment about Marlene rather than a generalised one about her family. As this letter is addressed to Sirius, it’s also likely that Sirius wasn’t particularly close with Marlene either, as Lily offers no attempt to comfort him about her death, which occurred sometime close to “last weekend.” Given Lily is often shown as quite a caring character, if either Lily or Sirius were extremely close to her, I think you’d expect more from Lily. However, Lily still does “[cry] all evening” when she hears, so it isn’t completely detached news of something happening to a stranger. Casual friends or acquaintances, maybe, but probably not a deep friendship.
We’re looking at a relationship close enough to warrant an initial shock reaction from Lily, but not close enough to warrant continual intense grief for more than a week, with a connection that was to the whole McKinnon family, not simply Marlene. In my personal view, while being Gryffindor classmates fits this model (allows Lily, Peter and Sirius to all be familiar with her, and could have a similar level of detachment as Harry has from Dean or Seamus), I’d think sharing a dormitory for seven years and also fighting in a war together would form a deeper connection between Marlene and Lily (think of Harry’s connection with Neville by the end of Deathly Hallows), or at least warrant a mention of Marlene in particular rather than “the McKinnons” in her letter.
Moody also doesn’t point out additional members of the McKinnon family in the photo, implying that they were absent when the photograph was taken or were not members of the Order. I think it likely that more McKinnons than Marlene were in the Order, as this would allow Lily, Sirius and Peter to be connected to the family. There are three scenarios: the McKinnons are in the Order photograph and are simply not mentioned by Moody, the McKinnons are in the Order but not the photograph, and the McKinnons are not in the Order. In the first scenario, Marlene is singled out as the most significant member of the McKinnons, as she is the only one named and the others are referred to as “her family” - she could be more involved in the Order than the others, or she acts as some kind of leading figure for the household, or she was simply better known to Moody than the others. In the second scenario, she is mentioned as the only one present, while the others are absent - they could be in hiding, although Lily and James were in hiding and were still present for the photograph, or are on some kind of Order activity (like Lupin, who is also not mentioned as being in this photograph). In the third scenario, Marlene is the only Order member in her family. The way Moody describes her death as “got her whole family” also suggests an element of being caught, as if the whole family was wanted to some extent by the Death Eaters. Hagrid also says that Voldemort had “decided ter kill ‘em,” further implying that the whole family were targets, not just collateral damage from targeting Marlene. For these reasons, I find it more likely that she is not the only member of the Order in her family.
Lily, James, Sirius and Peter are seated in the same row of the photograph - from this, we can gather that there likely wasn’t arranged seating and people sat with those they were friendly with. Marlene is standing nearby to Dedalus Diggle, Frank and Alice Longbottom and Moody, implying these were the Order members she was closest to, not the Marauders. For this reason, I think it’s reasonable to interpret Marlene as older than she often is portrayed. Frank and Alice’s ages are unknown, but they are well-accomplished Aurors, repeatedly stated throughout the series to be an extremely challenging career with training for at least three years after graduation to even enter the position, although they are not too old to have Neville (the average age of first-time mothers in 1981 was about 25, but given that Alice was a well-established Auror by the time Neville was born, she was probably a bit older), likely placing them somewhere in the mid twenties to thirties range. Dedalus Diggle could be any age, but he is quite an eccentric and cheerful character, wearing a purple top hat, known for enthusiastic displays like summoning shooting stars in Kent upon Voldemort’s downfall, bowing to Harry in a shop, and attempting to be friendly to Vernon Dursley (a monumental task). Her association with Dedalus Diggle implies she isn’t bothered by this kind of behaviour - or maybe she is, and she’s unfortunately stuck standing near him. Moody is described as having grey hair, and just generally comes across as an older man (grizzled appearance, gruff, battle-hardened cynic). Given Moody is also nearby, Marlene is now associated with at least three Aurors, so she could reasonably be interpreted as an Auror, or Auror-in-training.
So, in conclusion:
Marlene is a member of the Order, likely at least a few years older than Lily and James. Her family members, whether that be her children or parents or siblings, are also in the order, and she is probably fairly close with them, given they were all murdered together. The McKinnons are highly skilled wizards and have strength of character, standing up for their beliefs, to the extent that they become a specific target for Death Eaters. Her closest associates in the Order are probably the Longbottoms and Dedalus Diggle, as well as Mad-Eye Moody.
Marlene Variants!!
I think being described as one of the best of the age, not her age, but the age, might imply that she was either a younger member of a well-known magical family like the Potters (James Potter’s parents), or was an older, well-accomplished witch in her own right.
Marlene, part of a large family affiliated with the Order, who knew Sirius, Lily and Peter through having been the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor one year. We know that, in Harry’s time, Dumbledore asked at least two former Order members to teach DADA in a six year time span (Moody and Lupin, from Harry’s first to sixth year), so it isn’t unlikely that Order members could be asked to fill in the role for a year. Professor McKinnon, who puts her students through almost military paces, but who sits on her desk while teaching, who knows which students are friends, who arranges her seating plans accordingly to make sure everyone has someone they can ask for help nearby. Marlene, who teaches the first years how to duel and goes tramping through the forbidden forest searching for Hinkypunks and takes her third years to the lake with Gillyweed to hunt for Grindylows, because doing is the best way to learn.
Marlene McKinnon and Dedalus Diggle as friends; whether Marlene is similar to him in being enthusiastic and just generally kind of extra, or whether she’s a kind of down to earth character foil for him, just… I think those two would be very interesting to see interacting. Marlene and Dedalus as old schoolmates, who love magic for the wild and the untameable, who charm rain into shooting stars and charm autumn leaves to fly in dizzying dances.
Marlene as an Auror. Marlene as Moody’s colleague, as around his age, as Frank and Alice’s colleague. Marlene who can hold her own against any given Death Eater, even when caught by surprise. Marlene, who can cast spells so powerful they make the floor crack under her feet and sear the walls with energy. Marlene McKinnon, who makes Death Eaters flee when she appears in the doorway, who can never be ambushed and can never be beaten, who decimates the ranks of every opposing force. Marlene, who isn’t afraid to kill where Moody spares, who can snap from kind to deadly in an instant.
Marlene who is delighted when Alice tells her she’s having a baby, who comes around for lunch on Saturdays, who helps design the wards, and patches loopholes in the magic until it's impenetrable, and who makes Neville a quilt that is never finished. Marlene, who would have been an incredible aunt figure to Neville Longbottom.
Marlene as an Auror in training, with parents who are already Aurors, potentially siblings too. Marlene who goofs around with Moody, who Tonks reminds him of years later, Marlene who dies despite her training. Maybe Evan Rosier is the one who kills her; maybe Moody remembers this when Rosier refuses to come quietly; maybe Marlene McKinnon is half the reason Rosier ends up dead that day.
There’s my brainrot analysis! This turned out a bit longer than I intended it to be. Feel free to use any of this in anything you make (maybe I’ll cough up some art eventually… tag me if you do, I’d love to see). And a friendly reminder that if you do headcanon Marlene differently, in the end, it’s all for fun, and you’re free to view her any way you’d like. And who knows, maybe I’ll get around to doing this for the other characters one day.
"Obey me!" characters and their Hogwarts House - Part 1 of 3
(Contains: Lucifer, Mammon, Leviathan and Satan)
Tumblr media
As you may know, the thing with the selection of your house goes beyond your personality: they look for your core values. That's the whole reason why Hermione was a Gryffindor even as she is a nerd, and the reason Harry could be a Slytherin. So that was also my process for choosing each of their houses:
Tumblr media
Yeah, hot take: Lucifer is a Hufflepuff.
Tumblr media
LUCIFER - HUFFLEPUFF
Ok, hear me out before screaming about him being Slytherin!
The core values of Hufflepuff are: Loyalty, patience, hard work, and fair play.
The only thing that is above his pride (as a demon, because that's his sin and he was shaped after it), is his loyalty to his family. He said so after falling and giving his loyalty to Diavolo: anything for his family, even if that breaks him in the process.
He also praises MC when they work hard and he is a workaholic. Another thing that can break his walls of pride is his loyalty to Diavolo and MC... because those things mean more to him than his own sin.
He is incredibly tolerant and has great patience with his brothers, MC, Diavolo, and Barbatos. He also tries to play fair (although his fairness is more into the eye-for-an-eye).
He can also be incredibly dependent on his brothers, even if he tries hard to be independent. He just can't see a life without them (to the point that when they are looking for Thirteen it's implied that he was tempted hearing MC and his brothers' voice. He is the only one, along Mammon, that is tempted with MC).
Is also pretty clear he is not driven by ambition or seek of power. If he tries to be flawless and be powerful is because he thinks it is the best way to protect his brothers, not for his own desire. In fact, it's quite clear in some chapters that he does get tired of that facade. So yeah, he can't be Slytherin at the core.
Tumblr media
MAMMON - GRYFFINDOR
The core values of Gryffindor are: Bravery, helping others, and chivalry.
Mammon gives everything he has to help others, even if it's not his family or friends: a child with the witches, a puppy he found, MC when they were new in the Devildom, and he is the whole reason why his brothers and himself are the seven lords of the Devildom. He was even tempted by the grim reapers' house by hearing MC's voice and go with them.
Even if he has wishes, he can be really unselfish and put his wishes under the ones of others. Buy MC things even if he wanted to buy something for himself? Yup, he does that a lot.
He also is very brave, he was the one who stood up against Lucifer, Diavolo, and even God (he was the second hand of Lucifer for a reason). He is so brave that he can watch horror movies even if he becomes a baby and he wishes to fight his inner fears for the sake of others.
Tumblr media
LEVIATHAN - HUFFLEPUFF
The core values of Hufflepuff are: Loyalty, patience, hard work, and fair play.
Levithan has as the top priority the concept of friendship and the loyalty towards it.
Even if he doesn't have a lot of "I care for them" in his list, when you are in it, it's hard to be out of it.
He also accepts challenges if he feels like it would be a fair one and he actually accepted the end of that test with MC in the first season. That was what it was, even if he didn't like it.
He puts a lot of effort into his cosplays and games and he is really grateful when someone tries hard for him, too.
Tumblr media
SATAN - RAVENCLAW
The core values of Ravenclaw are: Intelligence, creativity, knowledge, planning ahead, and wit.
Satan is all about looking for knowledge (because he is traumatized lmao). He has books and spells for almost everything and he actually seeks who he is beyond his sin and the wrath of Lucifer.
He thinks the best way to resolve any conflict is to think of ways to prevent them and if they are happening, look for solutions on knowledge.
He also loves to play with ideas and schemes, even if he ends up not doing them.
He seems to really look down on people who aren't interested in learning and growing. He thinks of Lucifer as stubborn and way too must-do-it-in-this-way and that makes him angry, but he can give him his respects when Lucifer does something clever. He respects his brothers when they are creative or witty, and that's one of the reasons why he liked Belphie from the very beginning.
HP fic rec list: underrated gems of 2022
AO3 collection here. mostly ultra rare pairs, gen fic, character studies, and G/T rated fic. all are short <10k-ish reads (plenty of <1k ficlets) - do give them a read if any look interesting!
transports of delight by @swoontodeath (1.7k, G). The Knight Bus meets the Catbus. Sometimes destiny looks a lot like driving in the same direction.
pairing: Knight Bus (Harry Potter)/Catbus (My Neighbor Totoro). come for the crack ship, stay for the autistic stan shunpike. i’m a sucker for outsider POV and this is why — such great opportunity for some unique characterization, which this author took full advantage of here!
-#-
Life of Pye by @houseofhebrideanblacks (9k, E). Augustus Pye sees patients at St. Mungo's.
SUCH a creative unique fic - love it when authors take their deep IRL expertise and weave it into the canon HP verse. as the author put it, for anyone curious about what a nonmagical doctor sounds like writing about what they imagine magical medicine is like, day in and day out.
“It’s Puddlemere versus the Cannons tonight. The cup final.” Pye stopped mid-stride and mid-thought, shoulders seeming to weep under the weight of realisation. “Oh no,” he almost whispered. “Oh yes,” Marge glowered, “and you’re alone tonight, Rupert is off sick.” “Good heavens,” Pye whimpered, his coffee seeming to shrink in his hand, both in potency and relevance. In the waiting room behind him, three blokes hurricaned in chanting “CANNONS, CANNONS, CANNONS,” their unconscious friend slumped and dragged between them. “You know how it is, Pye,” Marge turned and shuffled back to validate the young witch’s national insurance card. Speaking over her shoulder, she finished, “never a dull moment at Mungo’s.”
-#-
Strangers In A Strange Land by @sleepstxtic (7.5k words, T). Helga, Salazar, and Godric dock in a strange land looking for the elusive fourth member of their team.
helga/rowena, founders friendship with POC Rowena Ravenclaw and Viking Helga Hufflepuff. CANON NODS and POC REP and FEMSLASH and a wonderful fascinating setting — ticks every single one of my AU boxes. another incredibly inventive and criminally underrated story.
-#-
A Different Truth by @paulamcg (2.8k, G). A week before Halloween 1993, when a colleague appreciates his company, Cuthbert may feel alive, even though he's dead and it's Saturday.
ok this is the last time i will say criminally underrated. canon-compliant POA first person cuthbert binns & remus lupin. this could’ve been slash and i would’ve been sold on it. i love their friendship, bonding over literature (of course) and a walk in the woods (so unexpected, but works so well.)
-#-
Meagre Pieces by @vdoshu (1k words, T). The Muggle-born Registration Commission is announced, and Andromeda feels sick.
The fact that the first Muggle-born Minister for Magic was a great victory for equality . . . one which was never again repeated.
@thistlecatfics’s trans teddy tonks x andromeda is taking over the world and i’m here for it. the political commentary in this. doshu you absolute wizard — you’ve got such range and you nail it every. single. time.
-#-
O let the world come at you, love (currently anonymous) (5k, T). Twelve-year-old Harry tries to figure out his parents' polyamorous relationship with Peter Pettigrew.
the first fic for the peter/lily/james tag on AO3, gifted to me for this year’s rare pairs exchange, and it’s all the wholesome fluff i i could’ve wanted from this ship and more!!! so much poly rep!! background wolfstar+tonks (ish), dorlene+implied others, and just the perfect epilogue 🥰
"Does it bother you that your parents are with Pete?" Sirius asked. "No! I know they're polymers."
-#-
Nirmal by @crazybutgood (2.8k, G).
postwar cho/padma. i ADORE this fic. there are literally LINKS to all the places and foods and songs mentioned, it’s an ENTIRE immersive multimedia experience in 3k words - a beautiful and horrendously underappreciated fic, imo.
hawa paani ka badlaav hona chahiye—A change in atmosphere is often needed to improve one's health or state of mind. Literally, a change in the winds, and the water. Parvati quoted that saying to us one evening last month, suggesting that it would be good for Cho and me. My parents knew that I had been with Cho for just over a year then, and welcomed her to stay with us after the Battle … Cho actually looked interested at the idea and suggested our home countries for a month each. And so, we’re currently visiting Mumbai first, staying in a Muggle area at my Muggle maushi’s place, in July—during the monsoon season.
-#-
a heart the size of jupiter (a smile like the sun) by gghostish (300 words, G, no archive warnings).
linny, epileptic luna lovegood. such a lovely achy hurty little thing ❤️
-#-
métamorphoses by @venom0usbarbie (5k, M). The blood curse took her grandmother. And now, she has to pay the piper if she doesn't want it to take her too.
astoria greengrass-centric, astoria & hermione (gen/possible pre-relationship). this fic wow. where do i begin!! the descriptive writing. the angsty family feels. the way barbie writes the blurring of thoughts and feelings and emotions into physical sensations is harrowingly good. check out everything else by her if you liked this, her style is inimitable.
-#-
wood-rush and wildflowers by @nanneramma (500 words, G). Lily has a secret, and it's time to tell Petunia.
wonderful little canon compliant alternate character POV vignette, gorgeous writing. also reccing this horrorific pansy/tom (ad te omnis caro veniet, 1.3k, M), this gorgeously sad canon-compliant alice & neville (gaps, 300, G), and every single one of nan’s summer femslash double drabbles!
-#-
covered in your ivy by @girl-with-goats (1.5k, M).
smutty BDSM remus/lily with planty metaphors that just work so well for this pairing!
-#-
I Always Underestimate You by @patriceavril (10k, M).
sirius & lily friendship! multi-era, canon compliant, sirius/mary and jily. i love the way patrice characterizes this friendship -- it’s not always easy, and that’s why it feels so earned!
-#-
Madam Smith by @lumosatnight (200 words, G). HOKEY/WINKY! SO charming and sweet and lovely and fluffy.
A Bleak Midwinter by @bluesundaycake (500, T). A Fenrir Greyback character study. feel sorry for baby fenrir thank you bye <3
Harry Potter and the Philosophy of Nice and Good
This thought wouldn’t leave me alone so please join me on this journey as I examine the themes of Nice and Good in relation to Snape and Hagrid. I’ll be looking at the text in Philosopher’s Stone specifically but this is not unique to book 1.
TL;DR Hagrid is Nice but not Good, Snape is Good but not Nice
We can all agree that Hagrid is Nice; he is kind, generous, and caring to a fault. In his very first scene, he asks to be allowed to wish Harry goodbye, kisses him on the head, and promptly bursts into tears at the fact that the Potters are dead and Harry is left orphaned. He is a man full of love and affection who never forgot the little boy he had to leave behind, to the point that on their second meeting, on Harry’s birthday, he even brings the boy a cake to celebrate. He’s clearly happy to see Harry again and excited to be the one to properly bring him into the magical world.
From this meeting on, Hagrid represents a major source of kindness to Harry; he defends him from his uncle, introduces him to magic, and happily answers his many questions. He’s also responsible for two of Harry’s most treasured gifts: Hedwig and the photo album of his parents.
Throughout book 1 and the series as a whole, he makes it a point to invite Harry and his friends over for tea, regularly looking in on him and checking on his well being. It’s easy to see that Hagrid could be seen as a sort of father-figure or older brother-figure to Harry who is starved for this sort of positive attention.
However, while his actions show that Hagrid is Nice, he is not in fact Good.
When Harry meets Hagrid properly for the first time, it is because the half-giant has just forcibly broken into the shack that Harry and the Dursleys are currently staying at.
At midnight.
While everyone else was asleep.
He then proceeds to politely invite himself in as though this is normal, makes himself at home, insults his “hosts” and asserts his right to be there despite being demanded to leave because a “ruddy muggle” like Vernon can’t tell him what to do. He uses both his force and his magic to terrify and cow the Dursleys into letting him do as he pleases and, on top of that, hexes Dudley. This leaves him with a permanent pig’s tail which ends up needing to be surgically removed because the magic never fades, even over a month later. Hagrid even admits that he had been trying to turn the boy into a full pig, not just give him the tail, implying that if his magic had succeeded, Dudley could have been stuck in pig form for the rest of his life unless someone had reversed the magic.
And what did 11 year old Dudley do to deserve this terrifying attack from a 63 year old man?
Nothing.
As far as Hagrid’s temper is concerned, Dudley’s disfigurement is the punishment Vernon deserves for insulting Albus Dumbledore. While much of Hagrid’s anger towards the elder Dursleys is certainly justified, it doesn’t change the fact that he attacked a child for something his father did. And despite all this, Hagrid is framed as a hero in this scene; he is the one to bring truth and magic to Harry’s life, he is the one to defend the sacrifice of his parents, he is the one to rescue Harry from his life of abuse.
Until he sends him right back.
Bear with me.
After this assault on their son, the Dursleys flee to the safety of the other room while Harry and Hagrid go to sleep. In the morning, Hagrid does not bother asking for permission and effectively kidnaps Harry as they take the only boat on the island to get to shore, leaving the Dursleys stranded. He brings Harry to Diagon Alley to collect his money and school supplies then almost immediately abandons his responsibility to supervise the boy’s shopping trip because he needs a stiff drink after his roller-coaster ride of a Gringotts trip.
On their reunion, Hagrid goes on to disparage half of the school, calling Hufflepuff “a lot o’ duffers” and claiming that “there’s not a single witch or wizard who went bad who wasn’t in Slytherin”. This is the first Harry has heard of the house system and already he is being fed bias and prejudice that Hufflepuffs are losers and Slytherins are evil. And not by just anyone, no, but by an employee of the school, an act that seems highly unprofessional.
He then proceeds to buy Harry a pet, his beloved Hedwig, without his guardians’ permission. This is a problem because, as previously stated, Hagrid will soon be sending Harry back to his “loving” relatives who likely only accept having a raptor in their house out of fear of further retribution. Hell, they likely only accept having Harry back in their house out of fear of further retribution. It’s honestly a miracle that the fear held long enough for him to be left alone the rest of the summer. Of course, Hagrid doesn’t bother bringing the boy all the way home, he simply leaves him on a train that is heading in the right direction and then disappears. Harry has just turned 11 and is definitely not old enough to be left unaccompanied in this way when it is certain he has never made a trip like this alone before. And all this is assuming that Hagrid had any way of knowing that the Dursleys would even make it home before Harry’s arrival, especially since Hagrid was the one to leave them stranded on that island. Luckily, Hagrid’s many attacks on the Dursleys doesn't lead to them resentfully taking their anger out on Harry and the boy manages to survive the summer.
While at school, Hagrid manages to go most of the year without causing any noticeable harm (other than openly insulting one of his coworkers in front of students) until one day he finds himself in possession of a dragon egg. An undoubtedly black market dragon egg at that, given that owning a dragon is highly illegal. But Hagrid does not care for the laws of the land because he has always wanted a dragon of his own and the looming threat of legal consequence is no match for his enthusiasm. Neither is the fact that his hut is too small to support a dragon longer than a few weeks and also made of wood. Nor the imminent danger a baby dragon poses to his safety and that of the rest of the school should the little dragon manage to get loose and wreak havoc, since it quickly becomes clear that Hagrid is not equipped to raise a baby dragon, though he tries to deny it to the very end.
Harry and his friends are even roped into helping with the dangerous task of assisting Hagrid raise the dragon which leads to Ron being bitten, something Hagrid does nothing to help with and instead chastises him and implies it’s his own fault he was bitten. Hagrid’s behavior towards the dragon’s actions is highly reminiscent of pet owners who refuse to take responsibility for the damages they cause because they are firm in their belief that their precious baby can do no harm. It also brings to mind the sort of exotic pet owner who will insist that their large predator is fine living in a house.
And although it is highly assumed that Malfoy is aware of the dragon and waiting for the right moment to ruin Hagrid’s life, Hagrid still refuses to come clean to any responsible adult and instead, it is up to three first-year students to fix the dangerous mistakes of their 64 year old friend. The solution they come up with is taking the dragon to the tallest tower at midnight to hand it off to some friends of Ron’s brother. This plan gets complicated due to the fact that Ron’s bite leads to him being hospitalized, which inadvertently leads to Malfoy finding out the timeline and trying to sabotage it. But these children are too worried about their 64 year old friend getting into trouble so they show up at his hut at the assigned time (the fact that in the future, Hagrid will chastise them for being out after curfew is the height of hypocrisy), collect the dragon, bring it to the highest tower just in time, and promptly forget the invisibility cloak which causes them to be discovered.
Harry and Hermione, along with Neville who was caught out trying to warn them, get detention and lose 50 points each for Gryffindor, dropping the house into last place and causing 3/4 of the school to ostracize them for “ruining their chance at having someone other than Slytherin win the cup this year”. And still, Hagrid stays silent as these children are bullied for his refusal to be responsible. When their detention comes around, Malfoy is upset and reluctant to enter the Forbidden Forest because it could be dangerous and Hagrid has the nerve to tell him he deserved it for being out of bed, the exact same thing Harry and Hermione were punished for while trying to help him. Because it’s fine for kids to be out of bed to help a grown man old enough to be their grandfather smuggle a highly illegal dragon out of a castle but it’s not okay to try and expose said illegal activity. And of course, because this is a punishment, Hagrid has no problem sending Malfoy off into the woods alone with nothing but another first year and a cowardly dog for company.
Twice.
In the same forest that students are banned from entering because it could be dangerous.
Hagrid is certainly a Nice and lovable character, but he is not actually Good.
Conversely, we can all agree that Snape is not Nice. Before we even meet him properly, Snape has the sort of reputation for being strict and unfair that could potentially be passed off as children thinking the worst of anyone who hands out punishment and expectations with a scowl on their face. He makes no attempt to soften himself for his students and his joy is most often described as being at the expense of others. Snape is clearly not a happy person and has no problems sharing this fact with anyone who comes across him. And while we never see how he interacts with his students in other classes, we know that he has no problem singling out students if he feels it is justified (or perhaps necessary).
During Harry’s first potions lesson, Snape calls attention to Harry’s celebrity status in a mocking way and then shortly after tries to put him on the spot by asking several potions questions that Harry is unable to answer. Snape relishes in his inability to answer, claiming that “fame clearly isn’t everything” and implying that Harry made no effort to read the material before attending class. Unless these quiz answers are all within the first few pages of the textbook, it is highly unfair of Snape to imply anything negative about Harry’s intelligence or diligence, especially as this is the first week of school and the first potions lesson.
His final cruelty of the scene comes when Neville and Dean’s potion explodes, causing Neville to need to go to the infirmary. Snape is quick to turn to Harry and accuse him of trying to make himself look better by letting others fail, hypocritical of course since in the future he will punish students for trying to help each other. And when Harry goes to defend himself and call Snape out on his unfair behavior, Ron immediately holds him back knowing it is futile because Snape is well known for being nasty.
We learn in the future that Snape’s animosity towards Harry largely stems from the fact that he is James Potter’s son. And while we eventually find out that much of this anger towards the elder Potter is justified, it doesn’t change the fact that he was nasty and mean to a child for something his father did.
However, while Snape’s attitude towards others shows that he is certainly not Nice, he does in fact show himself to be Good.
Despite being assumed to be the villain of book 1 for his unfair attitude, Snape is eventually discovered to be trying to save everyone throughout the year. When Quirrel runs in announcing the troll has invaded the school, Snape immediately runs to the third floor corridor, assuming the troll is a distraction to steal the precious Philosopher’s Stone. Unfortunately for Snape, he is met with Fluffy who then tries to take a bite out of his leg and leaves him injured enough to be seen limping several days later. Despite this pain, the sound of a commotion and students being in potential danger is enough motivation for Snape to run back fast enough to arrive at the girl’s loo just after McGonagall does. He even immediately stalks over to the troll to make sure the creature will not be getting up again any time soon.
This is also not the only time that Snape will find himself injured trying to protect others. During the first quidditch match, Harry finds that his broom is moving without his permission. This soon escalates to trying to buck him off entirely, a dangerous act considering how high up he is at the time. When Hermione takes the binoculars from Hagrid, she sees Snape staring directly at Harry while moving his lips and assumes he is the one responsible for the curse. She runs to the rescue by setting the bottom of his robes on fire in the hopes of breaking his concentration. Unfortunately for her, she was entirely wrong in her assumptions and instead ruined the concentration of the person who was actively trying to save Harry from the curse being inflicted on his broom. Lucky for her, she also happened to knock over Quirrel, who was the actual culprit, saving Harry from taking a spectacular dive.
Of course, his near miss at saving Harry’s life means that Snape decides to be more proactive next time, going so far as to be the referee in the next Gryffindor match. The Gryffindor team is so grateful that someone is looking out for their little first year seeker that George hits a bludger directly at Snape.
Once the match is over with Gryffindor victorious, Harry spots Snape going into the forest and, assuming he’s doing something villainous, goes to spy on him. He catches bits and pieces of a conversation with Quirrel and assumes that Snape is threatening the poor, unassuming professor into helping him get the Philosopher’s Stone. However, while it turns out that Snape was indeed trying to intimidate and threaten Quirrell, it was not for Snape’s own gain but instead to protect the Stone. A brave act, considering the presumed culprit going after the Stone is supposedly doing it on Voldemort’s orders and his interference could have hindered his safety as a spy.
Beyond all this, Snape is regularly seen patrolling the halls after dark. And while this may seem like a negative to any who thinks wandering around after dark is great fun, Snape is actually spending a lot of time running around making sure no foolhardy child is dying in an empty corridor because they refused to understand that curfew rules are imposed as a safety measure. For a man who is so clearly unhappy with the world and the people around him, he sure does spend a lot of time and effort making sure everyone is safe. So while Snape is certainly not Nice, he is definitely Good.
Harry Potter Fanfiction: All Will Be Well
Summary: Narcissa Malfoy plots in the wake of the Battle of Hogwarts. hpfanfictionprompts #2: From the perspective of one of the Malfoys, write about sitting in the Great Hall after the Final Battle. COMPLETE.
Disclaimer: Harry Potter is (c) J.K. Rowling and various publishers including, but not limited to, Bloomsbury Books, Scholastic Books and Raincoast Books in association with Warner Bros. Entertainment.
ALL WILL BE WELL
Narcissa Malfoy may have the heart of a Hufflepuff when it comes to her son, but in every other way that matters she is the consummate Slytherin – ambitious, clever, determined, and resourceful. The battle had concluded only a short while ago and her cunning mind was already running through a gamut of scenarios on how best to protect and elevate her family in the aftermath of the Dark Lord's demise. To protect and elevate them in this brave new Wizarding World where their Pure-blood ancestry was going to be of little-to-no consequence.
Her family was currently seated in the Great Hall of Hogwarts. The loyal Death Eaters that had been captured were in the custody of Magical Law Enforcement, which was being led by Kingsley Shacklebolt. No one had yet to approach the Malfoys with any charges, though she knew this was imminent. There would be repercussions from having aligned with the Dark Lord, even if they had rebelled in the eleventh hour.
Lucius, more bedraggled and frail than Narcissa had ever seen him, sent her an uneasy glance. She gathered he wanted to leave, but that was out of the question. Leaving and retreating were the same from her perspective, and to retreat implied defeat. In this instance, the defeated were judged guilty and en route to Azkaban. Hence, the Malfoys simply could not leave.
Narcissa took hold of Draco's hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. He did not react. Her darling son's head remained bowed as he unseeingly stared at the aged, wooden surface of the table they occupied. She was worried about him, very worried. It was as if he had completely shut down.
Her focus was reluctantly drawn to the entrance of the Great Hall. The acting Head of the MLE, Shacklebolt, and a couple of Aurors marched into the room. When they began to move in the Malfoys' direction, she deduced that their time was up. Prepared defenses were on the tip of her tongue, the most prominent being that she had saved Harry Potter's life in the Forbidden Forest; her decision to lie to the Dark Lord had been instrumental in turning the tide of battle in favor of the Order.
Narcissa tightened her hold on Draco's hand and braced herself for the upcoming confrontation.
"Auror Shacklebolt, Auror Shacklebolt," a vaguely familiar voice suddenly called. It did not take long to pinpoint the owner, as the Mud... Muggle-born, Hermione Granger, was purposefully making her way toward the group of Aurors. The exhausted and disheveled girl had an unyielding grip on the arm of the Chosen One, dragging him behind. A surly ginger-haired boy, obviously a Weasley, grudgingly trailed in their wake.
In a show of deference, Auror Shacklebolt paused in carrying out his duties and offered the young witch his undivided attention. "Yes, Miss Granger?"
Narcissa paled at the interception, certain the Muggle-born was going to demand the Malfoys immediate arrest. That she was going to impart how they had been willing spectators to her Unforgivable torture and interrogation by Bellatrix Lestrange, the Dark Lord's most cruel and vicious disciple. How they had stood by and done nothing while a degrading slur had been carved into her arm. How they should be found guilty by association.
Miss Granger instead surprised her by declaring, "The Malfoys helped us, sir. We thought you should know. Mrs. Malfoy saved Harry's life today. And, when we were caught by Snatchers back in March, Mal... Draco pretended not to recognize us so that we wouldn't be delivered to Voldemort."
Narcissa saw Lucius wince at how casually Miss Granger spoke the Dark Lord's name. And, at the mention of his own given name by the Muggle-born, Draco actually roused from his stupor and looked up at the girl. The Malfoy matriarch's eyes narrowed with contemplation.
"Tell him, Harry," Miss Granger insisted as she pulled at her friend.
"Uh, yeah," Mr. Potter awkwardly conceded. "What Hermione said..."
Mr. Weasley glowered at Narcissa and her family. He was definitely put out that the female member of their trio was petitioning the MLE on behalf of the Malfoys.
"See, Auror Shacklebolt?" Miss Granger pressed.
"That may be, Miss Granger," the dark-skinned wizard responded, "but the Malfoys still have much to answer for. And the elder Malfoy's a fugitive from justice. He escaped from Azkaban, if you recall."
"Of course, sir," Miss Granger relented. "We wanted to make sure you had all the facts though. In the end, Mrs. Malfoy and Draco did the right thing. Like the rest of us, we think they were making the best out of a really bad situation."
At the second mention of his given name by the Muggle-born, Draco's hand clenched in Narcissa's grasp. Was he upset from the liberty taken? Or was his reaction attributable to something else?
"We'll take Mr. Potter and your statements into consideration," Auror Shacklebolt pledged.
Miss Granger gave him a tired smile. "Thank you, sir."
As the three friends pivoted to walk away, Narcissa observed Mr. Weasley muttering under his breath. It was too low, too indistinct, for her to hear what was said, but not Miss Granger. Whatever had been shared was not to the girl's liking and elicited a fierce glare followed by a verbal setdown.
"Don't be a prat, Ronald! No one asked you to vouch for the Malfoys. You tagged along of your own volition. Merlin forbid anyone expect you to turn the other cheek, let bygones be bygones."
"Hermione-"
"Oh, hush," Miss Granger interrupted. "I'm not deluded, as you offensively suggested. I get that the Malfoys didn't merely help us out of the goodness of their hearts, that it was motivated by a lot of self-interest on their part. However, after the horrific day... no, year... we've all endured, I just want to believe there was a smidgen of good intention as well. Believe that people like the Malfoys... who utterly despise people like me... have the ability to change for the better, if only a bit." Her voice cracked. "Can't you let me have that?"
Mr. Weasley's shoulders sagged, sullenness dissipating in the face of Miss Granger's distress. He proceeded to tug her into a conciliatory hug. "Yeah, you can have that."
Next to Narcissa, displeasure emanated from Draco upon witnessing the contact. So, something else it was then...
Draco had never been fond of Mr. Potter or Mr. Weasley and, taking into account how incessantly he had complained about Miss Granger in the past, Narcissa had assumed she fell into the same category of disdain. A foolish assumption. Brightest witch in their year, Draco had grumbled. Prefect despite constantly breaking school rules, he had whined. Accused him of buying a spot on the Slytherin Quidditch team, he had fumed. Mocked him for being transformed into a ferret, he had cried. Attended the Yule Ball with Viktor-bloody-Krum, he had ranted. On and on it had went.
Is this why Draco had been hesitant to identify his schoolmates at Malfoy Manor? Had he developed a tendre for the Muggle-born? Had he been trying to shield her from his Aunt Bellatrix and, ultimately, the Dark Lord?
Studying Miss Granger with fresh eyes, Narcissa noted how everyone seemed to fall in line when it came to the girl. Mr. Potter. Mr. Weasley. Even Auror Shacklebolt to an extent. Mr. Potter was undeniably the hero of the story, but Miss Granger was not to be written off. She had been Undesirable No. 2, the notorious Mud-blood that went on the run with The Boy Who Lived. She had been at Mr. Potter's side every step of the way. And Narcissa strongly suspected she had been essential to his success.
Miss Granger could also be useful to the Malfoys was the startling realization. Although her blood status was distasteful, it would now be gauche to dwell on such things. Tomorrow she, in addition to Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley, would be headlining all the news outlets. She would be lauded as courageous and righteous. She would be idolized throughout the Wizarding World.
For the Malfoys to acquire Miss Granger would be quite the coup. It would demonstrate to all and sundry that they had let go of old prejudices and were embracing the future. That they had cast their Pure-blood ideology to the wayside by accepting the most famous of Muggle-borns into their fold. That she would make Draco happy was not to be overlooked either.
Narcissa frowned when Mr. Weasley brushed his lips against Miss Granger's forehead, the discord from a moment ago forgotten. Mr. Potter uncomfortably rubbed at the back of his neck, relegated to the role of third wheel. Their behavior made it apparent that Miss Granger and Mr. Weasley's relationship had evolved beyond friendship... and that would not do.
Securing Miss Granger's affection for Draco was imperative, Narcissa had decided. Mr. Weasley could be a serious hindrance in achieving this aim, thus he was an obstacle that needed to be eliminated.
Draco's scowl indicated that he was of a similar opinion regarding Miss Granger's beau.
"Calm yourself," Narcissa murmured to her son as the Aurors loomed.
Narcissa had a plan. A plan that required ambition, cleverness, determination, and resourcefulness, qualities she had in abundance. A plan that would abet in the protection and elevation her family. A plan that would prevail because failure was not an option. Miss Granger was pivotal to that plan.
The Malfoys would have Miss Granger, by any means necessary.
"All will be well."
THE END
