note: hi um this is my first oneshot on tumblr i hope you like it!!
you were 14 when you first met the avengers. your family had gotten into a tragic car accident and you were the only one who made it out alive, leaving you in excessive guilt and burden; guilt because you were the only one granted a second chance at life and burden because you had to live your life, barely scraping by as you were dropped the responsibility of taking care of your sick grandmother.
at 11, where all that the kids your age had to worry about was whether their pocket money was enough to get themselves an after-school snack, you worried whether or not the money left to your name was enough to survive.
at 11, where girls worried about their changing bodies and asked their mothers about it, you had to figure it all out yourself and with the help of your trusty laptop, the only gadget you had, one that your dad had gifted to you after you had gotten 100s for all your tests at age 8. he thought you were his little prodigy and figured a laptop would treat you well. you took care of it well because while you didn't want to spend the last of your money left, —that was specifically set aside for your grandmother's hospital bills— you wanted to hold on to the laptop for as long as you could, as a reminder of your loving father, as well as the memories the item held, after you've watched movies with pretty much all of your passed family members on that laptop at different points in your life. that was why whenever the thing lagged due to how much you've been using it, you almost always figure out how to fix it until it was good as new.
at 12, while your classmates had their parents to protect them when they were out at night, you feared for your life whenever you were out past dark. which led you to learning self defence from youtube videos. you learned them pretty quickly and with your sharp-wittedness, you no longer feared to be out at night. you even had the honours of trying out your skills when some men thought they could get you just because you were smaller than them.
at 12, where kids your age were having fun, enjoying their childhood, you had no choice but to be mature and think for the good of yourself and your sick grandmother. you were forced to grow up and you were probably more mature and intelligent than the rest of your classmates combined.
and at 13, you realised that money wasn't going to grow on trees and the money you were left with wasn't going to last forever. it had to last until you were old enough to work. but with your grandmother's condition getting worse and worse, you were forced to drop out of school. you were upset because you loved it. you loved knowledge. but family came first and the only thing that your knowledge increased on was on computers.
which led to you being able to hack into tony stark's bank account at only 14. you had no other choice than to steal money and who better to steal it from than a guy whose pocket change could probably last you another five years or so? you knew who tony stark was, the whole world knows who he is. and you thought that maybe he would be too preoccupied with his alter ego saving the whole world, along with his group of earth's mightiest heroes that he wouldn't notice the tiny bit of money you'd stolen from him.
of course the billionaire had been alerted immediately by his AI when you'd accessed into his systems. "security breach?" he exclaimed, immediately dropping the tool he was tinkering his suit with in his lab.
he spent about 3 minutes, that was how long you took touring around in his systems, observing what you did in it. he watched as you did nothing about the highly confidential information he had and instead, stole....5 grand from his bank account? that was barely a scratch to his account. what was going on?
he had requested FRIDAY to track down the hacker, mainly because he was perplexed that someone had hacked into his well protected system just to steal a tiny bit of money but it seems that even FRIDAY couldn't track down where it came from.
he told the team and it was then that everyone worried how dangerous the hacker could possibly be.
"who steals just 5 grand after hacking into a billionaire's bank account?" clint frowned after tony had explained the whole situation. "i mean, if i managed to hack into your systems, i'd do way more than just steal a couple bucks."
"exactly. and who knows? they might just be waiting for the right moment to install dangerous malware into the system and until we find the culprit, they're roaming somewhere out there with all our confidential information right at the tip of their fingers. if they decide to use it against us..." tony trailed off, for once having a worried expression on his otherwise nonchalant face. he's never been this clueless about what to do with any sort of technical issues concerning the avengers or himself.
you on the other hand, after getting complacent that you weren't caught, kept doing so for the next couple months or so. you had no ill intentions, just trying to scrape by. the whole situation puzzled tony. he didn't care how much you've taken from him in total now, you were right; it was merely pocket change to him. but you were still considered a threat since you had free access to his systems and he didn't even know who you were or where you were.
that was until you made a tiny mistake, one that if tony wasn't spending every waking moment trying to track you down he wouldn't have noticed. and though it was a small mistake, it certainly was going to change how things ran from then on.
that afternoon, after having just gotten back from visiting your grandmother at the hospital, you were planning to get more money from the billionaire's bank account at the comfort of your own home. god, hospital bills were expensive. once you had had a little snack, you settled down on the couch and opened your laptop. but being the quick-witted person you were, before the screen in front of you lit up, you saw movement from behind you.
your heart raced. you could handle fighting people but those usually happened in alleys at nighttime. this was in your home, your safe place. you made sure to lock the doors and there weren't fire escapes outside your windows so how did the intruder get in?
you could tell they were trying to be inconspicuous to get to you and so you let them. you let the person think that they were going to get you without a fight but when they were right behind you, you swiftly turned your body around and jumped over the couch. the masked intruder let out a surprised yelp and the two of you fought for a bit. before you knew it, you had them pinned under you in just ten seconds.
"wha– how– what?" it sounded like a boy. you looked down at him and noticed his red and blue spandex suit. you frowned. wasn't this the friendly neighbourhood spiderman guy or something? why was a superhero breaking into your home?
he was coughing from your knee pressing down onto his chest and you lifted it slightly, enough for him to breathe but not enough to escape. he seemed grateful though because he muttered a seemingly embarrassed 'thanks'.
"get off the kid or i'll blast you off of him myself."
you look up and saw the iron man repulsor aimed right at you, and obviously iron man himself was standing right there in the middle of your small apartment. behind him stood a redhead, who you knew as the black widow, aiming a pistol at you, and a man with a shield, captain america. the spiderboy must've come in through the window and unlocked the door for them.
when you made eye contact with steve, he frowned in confusion. you looked way too young to be the culprit they had expected. he muttered a quiet 'wait, what?' before tony stark revealed himself, his iron man faceplate opening.
"um...kid? where are your parents? or guardian? we need to see them because there's been some highly illegal activity coming from this address." the man in the suit spoke. you stayed still, knee still pressing against the boy under you, frowning at the adults in the room. they noticed your apprehensiveness and slowly lowered their weapons. "we're not here to hurt you, you can release the boy now," steve told you gently.
you usually weren't one to trust easily but since these people were known superheroes, you reluctantly stood up, still anxious of the possibilities of what they could do to you. the spiderboy got up too and dusted his back, before going to stand next to steve. you were confused as to why these heroes were breaking in your home until you remembered what you had been up to for the past weeks. how could you forget when that was the only reason you were still surviving?
your eyes widened with fear when they met tony's soft ones. he looked at you with such care and worry that you were reminded of your late dad. the man in front of you wasn't the arrogant man you've watched on youtube. you felt bad for stealing from him now. you used to think that he deserved it, despite how little you took compared to how much he had. the man knelt down before you so he didn't appear so big in front of you, seeing your frightened expression. little did he know you were frightened for a totally different reason.
"anyone else living here, kid? because i tracked down this address and someone has been stealing money from me. i might need to have a little talk with them." he explained, looking around the house. you fiddled with the hem of your shirt nervously, scared of what would come once you came clean about your actions. you were scared you were going to be taken in for juvenile crime but you were also scared of the consequences of lying straight to their faces. so you took a deep breath before deciding to just tell the truth.
"t–that would be me, sir." you admitted in a small voice, avoiding eye contact with the billionaire you had been stealing from. a few shocked looks from the team and an incredulous 'what?' from tony had you biting the inside of your cheeks in fear.
"i'm truly sorry about that, sir. i..." you trailed off, debating whether or not to justify your actions because you thought that he might not even want to listen to it. "i had to pay off my grandmother's hospital bills because she is very sick. my family died a few years ago in a car crash and i was the only one who made it. i was left some money to my name but having to survive on that along with paying off nana's bills, it was bound to run out. i...i thought that since you were a billionaire, stealing a few thousands wouldn't matter to you...i'm so sorry, sir. i– i'll start working to pay you back.." you stuttered out, holding your hands together so it would minimise the shaking.
tony's mouth opened and closed, like fish out of water, not knowing what to say to you. he stood up and you were on the verge of breaking down right then and there, feeling as small as you did before he knelt before you. "p–please don't report me, sir. i– i don't know what would happen to my nana if you do.. i swear to you that i didn't mess with your other files. i only accessed the system for your bank account and that was it. i have no ill intentions, please don't report me.." you were now the one kneeling down in front of him, begging.
the team were flabbergasted at the scene unfolding before them and tony was quick to get you off your knees, which scared you even more because the death grip of his metal hands on your forearms had your mind running wild at the millions of possibilities of what he would do to you. was he going to kill you and leave you somewhere that people were never going to find your body? or was he going to dispose of you and use his power to remove you permanently from the system so no one came looking for you? he had the power to ruin your life and you feared that.
snapping you out of your mental breakdown, he spoke softly. "hey, it's okay." and that was when you realised the 'death grip' he had on your forearms had only been your paranoia getting the best of you. he was barely even touching you. your teary eyes looked up at his soft, brown ones in fear.
then he smiled at you.
"it's okay. i understand the reason why you did what you did. you're a good kid, your nana is so lucky to have you. what's your name?" he knelt down before you once again, knowing that him standing tall in his iron man suit terrified you. "y/n." you responded timidly.
"how old are you, y/n?" this time, it was steve who asked. you had forgotten that there were other people in the room, too consumed by your fear for your life a few moments ago. "i'm fourteen, mr america, sir." you whispered out, the sight of captain america in person intimidating you until you saw a kind smile on his face.
"you're pretty young to be doing what you've been doing, y/n. are you aware that you're the first person to be able to hack into my heavily protected, supposedly impenetrable network? many have tried to do so and failed, and they were really smart people too. have you been doing this for a while?" tony asked.
"um...my father gifted me this laptop when i was 8 because i did exceptionally well in school. he believed i was a child prodigy and let me have a laptop since he knew my studies wouldn't be affected by the distraction of entertainment. i used to only hack into games to cheat my way up the ranks but only recently i tried something else since i had nothing better to do and i've been out of school for a while now. i knew you were a billionaire so i tried just for the heck of it and surprised myself when i got in on the first try. and then i saw your bank account details and i really needed money so i stole some... again, i'm so sorry about that." you apologised, looking down at your feet.
he couldn't believe it. you were just messing around and you managed to get into his system? you, a mere fourteen year old who was out of school, managed to single handedly do what geniuses around the world had failed to do?
he was initially just going to have a talk with the hacker, and in case they were dangerous and had backup, he brought his own. but bringing steve, natasha and peter proved to be unnecessary when the culprit turned out to be you.
"where did you learn those moves?" natasha stepped closer towards you. you looked up at the redhead, noticing the glare she had on you when she aimed her pistols at you was replaced with curiosity.
you fiddled with the hem of your shirt even more, embarrassed to tell her that you learned to fight from a couple of youtube videos when she had gotten years of actual training. you were pathetic compared to her. "i, um, i learned them from some youtube videos."
her eyebrows raised in surprise at the revelation. you hadn't gotten professional training yet you moved like you had. peter had superhuman strength, agility and endurance yet you took him down in under ten seconds. sure it may have been a disadvantage to peter because he was caught off guard but he should've been able to take you down still.
now was tony going to let the chance of a lifetime slip by? no, of course he was immediately thinking of recruiting you. your dad had been right about you being a prodigy. you adapted to new skills quickly and you were perfect for recruitment.
"hey kid, wanna be an avenger?"
your eyes widened and your jaw dropped in shock. steve immediately turned to him, an incredulous look on his face as he glared dangerously at the billionaire. "stark, you wanna think about this for a minute?"
"thank about what, cap? you saw what she did to the spiderling. and she successfully hacked into my system on her first try and we took weeks to trace her. romanoff back me up here," he saw how impressed natasha was by you and he knew the redhead wasn't going to disagree. "stark's right, steve. she's only fourteen and she's capable of so much already. we need someone like her."
"exactly! she's only fourteen! this life is dangerous for her!" steve argued. peter then tapped his shoulder to get his attention. "hey, mr rogers, i'm a sixteen-year-old avenger and she took me down easily. not gonna lie, it hurt my pride, also my back when you flipped me over your shoulder," he turned to you but you didn't say anything because you couldn't see his facial expression. "but i think she's going to be okay, sir."
steve sighed before turning to you, the defeated expression on his face softening when you looked up at him with your doe eyes and a small smile. you didn't answer to tony just yet since it seemed that steve had a say in it as well but you were dying to say yes. not only were you not going to be reported for your crimes but to be recruited by iron man himself to be an avenger? who could say no to that? not you, at least, since you had nothing better to do with your life at the moment.
"well, what do you say, kid?"
your smile grew and you nodded happily. the team couldn't help but crack a smile at how happy you looked for the first time since they've encountered you.
"well, you should go pack your important stuff so we can go back to the tower. you're going to be moving in if you're an official member of the avengers." tony told you and you nodded, walking towards your room to start packing while the team sat on the couch to wait for you.
"wait, what's going to happen to my nana?" you turned back towards them, worry etched onto you face. "don't worry about it, kid. you can give me the details later and i'll settle it. she'll be in good hands." he assured. "okay." you mumbled in response.
you were actually going to be an avenger. "awesome.." you grinned to yourself as you packed.

Tumblr media
The disturbing rattle of the air conditioner served as white noise while you toyed with the drooping noodles swimming in the savory sauce placed before you. A few of your coworkers droned on about their plans, their kids and undeserving husbands leaving you alone in the corner of the depressing break room to think about what to expect when getting back to your cubicle. Which was a little less depressing than the powder white painted room you resided in now.
“Y/L/N, Min is asking for you.” The conversations stopped and all three of us looked up into the door frame. Jimin,Yoongi's assistant stood with his hands buried in his stiffly pressed pants pockets. “I-I’m on lunch.” You slowly went back to your lukewarm meal, taking a few noodles into your mouth. Chewing, You waited for the heavy pitter patter of his polished leather loafers to exit, but You never get what you wish for.
“Y/N, please don’t make me have to run back up there just to run back down here and tell you the same thing….c’mon.” He came closing your tupperware, sighing as you pushed it into your lunch bag, embarrassment growing on your features as he stood over you. The stare of nosey coworkers followed as you stepped out of the bland break room. The clacking of Jimin’s shoes found your nerves rather quickly, closely he walked behind you like a school principal making sure you went where instructed.
Taking you past your cubicle to leave your lunch you could almost taste the jealousy being thrown at you like missiles. Disapproving and confused whispers and glares followed you out the area. Reaching the stairs, out of sight of your colleagues you out ran Jimin, the looks, noises and scoffs getting the best of you. You practically threw yourself through yoongi's door, your heart pounding in your ears.
“Hey! hey! Bunny, got here quickly didn’t you?” He walked over locking his loyal assistant out. Falling back on the couch struggling for your breath, closing your eyes, you heard him walk around you. “I told you I’d see you after work, we’d have all night together.” Sighing, he pulls you up by your arms. With a grunt he sat down and replaced your head on his lap. “I know what you said, but did you really think I was going to wait...why should i?” Opening your eyes you met his soft gaze. “Tell me you love me.” He whispers, almost ashamed in himself. Needy, needy, needy, always needy. “This can’t be why you called me in.”
“Why should I?” You laughed, obviously he didn’t share your sense of humor as he tugged harshly on a strand of your hair. “Well if I didn’t love you I’d quit Yoongi.” Rolling over you cuddled into his soft tummy inhaling his masculin scent, this here under him locked in his dim office was your safe place. “No you wouldn’t, I pay you too much.” He murmured petting your back with his large hands. “As if!” You giggled into his tummy, pulling back to look up at your lover. His signature smile displayed on his features, moving his hands from your back he places his limber fingers at the back of your knee. Locking eyes he slid skillfully under your skirt to massage your ass over your panties. “Who were you hiding from today hm?” Groaning you rolled your eyes, you hate how he knows you so well.
“Kim?” “Mrs Kim is the least of my worries now.” You grimaced playing with his buttons. “Mm good, can't be the new girl, maybe her boyfriend?” Your eyes shot open, “boyfriend?! Who?” He planted this topic in the conversation, knowing your interest in the drama of your workplace. “Yeah, she’s running around with the coffee boy.” Laughing, he cut himself off “Jungkook.” He laughed almost uncontrollably. “That’s so cute since when?!” He hums calming down, “uh since about last month, I’ve been watching them get all close and flirty jeon puts extra cream in her coffee, she blushes blah blah. And you know Jimin is the nosiest person in the population of this place.”
You chuckled Nodding in agreeance “learned that way before you did, he was my cubicle neighbor before he was your assistant.” Sitting up you go to his drink cart to grab a bottle of water. “Yeah they’re cute as long as they stay on task, Answer the question though, who’s bothering my baby hm? I hate seeing you that way.” He comes from behind gliding his hands around your front pulling you into his embrace “you have a whole cafeteria in the next wing, I made sure they served your favorite today, and yet you chose the shitty break closet.” His rambling turns into background noise as you look through the one way window. Watching as your coworkers attended their duties, Jungkook balanced coffees in his arms with skill the new girl watched in admiration...I wonder what he’s actually here for.
Yoongi’s breath fans your neck causing you to shiver against him. “I’m sorry what’d you say?” “You’re ok.” He turns you around swiftly kissing you passionately against the glass obviously you’ve missed something. Though unseen the act feels extremely dirty. Dropping your water you cling to his shoulders, legs around his Slender waist. “You're not paying me to make out with you I hope.” He pecks your nose, gnawing his bottom lip. “Huh looks like I am.” “Ah, as tempting as that sounds Yoongs-” “don’t ever call me that.” He nips at your neck in retaliation. “I have a stack of papers on my desk that Mr Jimin has been beating me over the head about.” Groaning he loosens his grip around you. Letting you gather yourself before going to his door.
“I’ll see you tonight yeah?” Pouting,he came kissing your lips once more. “I’ll be waiting.” He opened the door and watched you strut down the stairs.
Getting back to your respectful area, you notice something was off...where’d your lunch go? You could’ve sworn you threw it on your desk. Pulling out the rolling chair to take a seat, “I’ll find it later.” You whispered to yourself, taking a seat, directly in the cold remains of your lunch. “What the fuck!” A wave of laughter was given with your ill response. Noodles dangled from your backside as you turned to look at the mess on your office chair.
“Okay! What are we a bunch of middle school virgins?” Jimin shouted, his face turning a dark shade of peach. “I’m sorry y/n.” Rolling your eyes you tried to keep back tears of utter embarrassment turning away from you colleagues. “Uhm...it’s pretty bad, do you have anything to change into?” He takes off his styled coat and hands it to you. You can’t process over the harsh giggles and whispers, “yeah like I have a closet in my car, Jimin I don’t have shit to put on!” You hiss making him pull an offended expression.
“I could give you something.” Your head snapped in the direction of the quiet new girl in the far corner. “I have a few dresses in car I-I I’m in the process of…” she scans the room unsure of her words “moving.” You offer a smile to cover how distraught you are, unable to respond correctly. “Thank you luci, we appreciate it.” Nodding she smiles softly grabbing her bag going to retrieve the clothes. “Go to the restroom, please.”
Tying the coat around your waist you rushed with your head down to the bathroom, shutting the door behind yourself roughly. Taking off the grey coat Turing to examine your soup covered ass. You brushed the cold noodles letting them splat onto the tiled floor. Pulling coat off the conjoined sinks you found the spacious stall at the end of the row, stripping off your soiled skirt. Nothing better to do, but to sit on the cold stool and wait.
The creaking door of the bathroom cut your silent thoughts short, isn’t Luci a quick one? You chuckled to yourself getting up, about to tell her of your whereabouts…“maybe if the bitch didn’t have her head so far up Min’s ass she woulda saw it coming.” The unknown voice stopped you in your tracks. Her friend snickers. “Shh she could be in here.” “As if I give a fuck, she needs to know!” Peeking through the side of the stall you could see them in the mirror touching up their makeup. “Min’s probably got his head up hers too!” The quieter of the two spoke up.
“Ha that would explain my recent hours, I heard they fuck in the office, I wonder if the sluts any good.” She cleaned the edges of her lipstick, “I’ve fucked him, I know he’s good, really into all the rough shit, he’s crazy.” She tossed her makeup into her bag fixing her hair, “why’d you guys stop?” You felt your chest ache, yoongi never told you about him and Mrs Kim, what kind of fucked story is this? “Little miss pasta booty got the job, and Joon finally proposed...guess he didn’t want me any-” “y/n are you in here?!” Luci’s softened voice searched for you.
“I’m in here.” Responding slightly above a whisper, the soft steps of her pumps were trampled by the clicking steps of the two mud slingers who quickly bursted from the restroom. “I didn’t know what you would like, I have this blue one, it’s a cute summer dress.” She hung it on the door of the stall for me to see. “Or this white one, it’s a bit tighter but I think it’ll look great on you.” Randomly choosing you stripped of your top pulling the dress over yourself. “Thanks Luci, I owe you one.” Collecting your clothes and Jimin’s coat, you left the stall. “No no, I’m sorry Kim did that to you...I should’ve stopped her.” She coyly hangs her head, “not your fault...thanks Luci.” She smiles politely, leaving me alone in the bathroom.
Eunji That jealous bitch, yoongi has much explaining to do. You smooth out your dress bracing yourself for the environment behind the door. only to be pushed back. A deep blush pink shade covering his face, yoongi brings you back in, “you can’t be in here, this is the ladies.” He scans your body before looking at the dirty laundry in your arms. “This is my building. I can be anywhere in any room I want.” Scoffing you attempt to leave, grabbing your forearm he pulls you back. “What’s going on with you I’m here to check and see if you’re alright and here you are acting like an ass y/n” his face held a concerned stare.
“Yoongi the last thing we should be doing is huddling in the bathroom, we’ve drawn enough attention to ‘us’ already.” Unable to look him in the eyes you examine his posture, he propped your chin on his pointer finger bringing your face up. “And since when did you care?” “Ever since your ex painted my ass with my lunch.” He giggled darkly, “what?” Again you attempted escape, only to be overpowered and lifted with ease. “Okay sit the fuck down.” Placing you down in the sink like a child he took your skirt looking at the back. “And this just had to be the one I bought?.” He shook his head like a disappointed father. “What are you acting so mad towards me for, who’s supposedly my ex huh?” He took the skirt under the faucet scrubbing it harshly together with soap.
Why can’t he ever just leave you alone, drawing attention to your relationship was the last thing you needed today. It’s not like nobody knew, it was hard not to. But you hated the unwanted attention the favoritism brought you. “Who lied to you?” “You did.” He stopped the water, “y/n now you know I’d never.” He folded the cleaned wet skirt along with your shirt. “Yoongi, I heard Kim Eunji talking about it. She told her little follower about it while I hid in the stall.” You answered blandly, ready to be freed from the bathroom. His face shifted shades, “what? I’ve never fucked that bitch, all she does is lie and get into shit she has no concern for.” He gripped the sink roughly.
Like a switch, when the right buttons were pushed Yoongi’s temper was quick to strike….though never thrown at you. It can have harsh outcomes and you've seen it first hand. “She runs her mouth about you too much, I’ll have to help her out.” Aggressively released the marble counter, “Yoongi w-what, calm down.” He walked to the door, unsure of what to do. Naive of his wrath you followed behind. “She wants to get fucked? I’ll give her something that’ll fuck her up, something that’ll make her piss off for good this time.”

Just Let Go
Rating: T (Ichigo has a potty mouth... again)
A few weeks ago @creativepromptsforwriting posted a weekend game and I got prompt #401: "Just let go." "You know I can't."
Anyway, this happened. Minimally polished and not connected to anything else I've written.
His suit collar itched fiercely and beside him Inoue beamed as Ichigo took pictures using the girl’s new camera. A murmur arose from the back of the room; the bride and her brother had arrived. Ichigo swallowed heavily as the guests around him stood and turned to watch the bride walk down the aisle. This was really happening.
Rukia was getting married.
To Renji.
Today. Right now.
It took only a moment for her to come into his view, and an ice-cold bolt shot down his spine. She was wrapped in white silk, tiny in the heavy layers, and the veil over her head obscured her face. All Ichigo could see was that day on the bridge, when she’d been helpless in white cotton and a red collar.
Inoue hissed at him cheerfully to take pictures, but Byakuya caught Ichigo’s eye. The older man looked at him before his glance slid down to Rukia.
He knew what Byakuya was asking him to do.
Ichigo shoved the camera into Inoue’s hands.
“Just let go!” They were different words but the same sentiment, each time she asked him not to follow her, not to rescue her, not to worry about her. Each time she asked him to let her sacrifice herself for him, for his friends, for Soul Society.
For the world.
“You know I can’t,” Ichigo growled low in her ear. His arm tightened around her shoulders, the other beneath her knees, pressing the side of her body against his broad chest. He sprinted through the dangai as though the Kushanada of Hell were after them.
After all, he’d basically kidnapped her. And on her wedding day, no less.
The strawberry flower-embroidered veil fluttered behind them, and when the benighted thing got caught in the walls of the dangai Ichigo spared half a second to tear it from Rukia’s head, leaving it to be absorbed into the dark walls surrounding them. Damned thing, he thought as he put on more speed. He’d pricked his fingers sewing flowers into the veil, flowers that bore his name.
“But Renji…”
“Will forgive us both eventually.” Ichigo tried to sound more confident about that than he felt, but then – Renji hadn’t looked thrilled about the wedding either.
The larger of his two blades banged against his back as he ran. Sode no Shirayuki slapped against his thigh; in the chaos of tearing off that ill-fitting polyester suit in favor of his shihakusho and stealing Rukia from Byakuya’s side he thought maybe Kiyone had shoved it in his obi.
Not that he knew why the blonde had it.
“Nii-sama…” Rukia yelped as Ichigo sped up again.
“Would have stopped me if he’d wanted to,” he bit out. Though they’d been first enemies and then uneasy allies, Ichigo had learned to read Byakuya’s expressions since that first fight when he’d stabbed Ichigo and called him slow.
Stop this, Byakuya had been saying with that look. Stop my sister from making this mistake.
“But he planned the whole wedding!” Rukia protested, and smacked him in the chest, trying to get him to let go.
Ichigo only squeezed tighter. “Stop that, we’re in the fucking dangai,” he growled. There was a light ahead of them, but he could hear the cleaner behind them, could practically feel it breathing down their necks.
Zangetsu cackled in his head. Bankai, the zanpakutō said, and Ichigo took a breath. He hadn’t tried to use his bankai since defeating Yhwach – and what a shitshow that had been. But his zanpakutō usually knew better than he did, about these things.
“Bankai! Tensa Zangetsu!” he roared, and instead of the heavy white bands and red scaled pauldron, instead of the heavy, black fabric that had weighed him down three years ago, Ichigo wore the sleek, open coat of an earlier transformation, the one that – thank kami – made him fast. He roared, putting on a last burst of speed and reaching the light at the end of the long tunnel.
They burst into the nighttime sky of Karakura, no one there to break their fall. Ichigo landed hard, falling to one knee with Rukia still clutched close in his arms. Zangetsu’s blade and Sode no Shirayuki’s sheath scraped against the pavement.
“You idiot!” she cried, but when Ichigo met her eyes he saw relief in them. “I told you—”
“And I told you, all your opinions are rejected,” Ichigo growled down at her. “I’m not letting you sacrifice yourself, not ever again.” She was so light in his arms, even with the heavy, white silk wrapped around her body; Ichigo was sure she hadn’t been eating enough.
Yuzu’ll fix it, he thought. She’d take one look at Rukia and make the older woman’s favorite dishes every night for a month.
She looked away from him. “It was for the best. And he’s been in love with me for almost fifty years,” Rukia mumbled into the cool night air. A car, headlights on high beam, drove past them without noticing either of the shinigami.
“Do you love him?” Ichigo asked quietly. If she did, if she really did…
“…No. I tried to,” she whispered. “No.”
“Hn.” He started walking, feet finding the path to Urahara’s shop unerringly. She needed a gigai, and the ex-captain would probably be expecting them soon. The man always did know too much.
“And when Soul Society comes after us?” Rukia demanded as Ichigo let her geta-clad feet touch the pavement just outside the shop. Ichigo had been right – even though it was the middle of the night, a light still shone from the open doors in welcome. He straightened up and she followed, taking in the black markings – like bindings – that once more wrapped around his wrists and streaked over the backs of his hands. He wondered what it meant that Zangetsu had changed yet again. But the zanpakutō was silent.
“Tch. I’ll beat all their asses,” Ichigo said easily. “But I don’t think they will, since they’re not here already. Byakuya wants you to be happy.”
“And you think you know what would make me happy?” Rukia demanded.
Ichigo’s expression softened, and he brushed fingers feather-light over her cheek. “Don’t I?” he asked gently.
“Ah, Kurosaki-san, Kuchiki-san,” Urahara’s voice reached them from his place in the doorway. His good eye raked over Rukia. “I have a gigai and some more comfortable clothes ready for you, Kuchiki-san.”
“How does he always know?” Rukia grumbled, but she allowed Ichigo to escort her into the bright light of the shop. “I won’t thank you for this,” she whispered. But her hand slipped into his.
“Yeah, yeah.” Ichigo's hand squeezed hers, and the door slid shut behind them.

When you step out into the rain, you feel a bit sad, shutting the door behind you. Smiling to yourself, you sigh, trying to find Taehyung through the tinted windows, your hand lingering on the door.
You don’t want to leave, you want to hold onto him for a bit longer. Somehow, you know that if you say goodbye now, things will stay the same, you will stay the same.
Broken as you've always been.
He’s lost behind the dark, and you have to let go, turning away.
You can’t rely on him. You can’t let your burdens rest on his shoulders, you have to figure out how to solve them on your own. Nevertheless, the temptation is there. To lose yourself in the fantasy of bliss and happiness dancing in the rain.
What happens when you finally let go?
You don’t want to find out.
Inwardly, you try to swallow the lump in your throat as you leave him behind, holding tightly to the bittersweet memories he has given you.
Smiling softly to yourself, you lift your satchel to cover your head, shielding you from the rain like a little umbrella, only a few feet away from the apartment complex door. Glancing to your left, you receive a pang of nostalgia as you recognize the small bench where you waited for Jaejin before.
Was it only yesterday that you came to Korea?
You find it so hard to believe that in a mere span of 24 or so hours, so much has already happened and yet you're here.
The same as before.
You scoff a bit to yourself, finding how pathetic that is. You know you have to change, that you have to fix yourself, and find it sad that you can't seem to do it alone. The only moments where you start to feel okay are moments like today, where others can distract you and give you their strength.
Is that all you're capable of being?
A parasite that leeches off of other's happiness?
You are weak, aren’t you?
Turning away, you start to resume your trek to the safety of your apartment, your new home but pause at the sound of someone shouting behind you.
"Wait!"
It's a familiar voice, and frantic. Curious, and a bit worried, you turn around, trying to find the source of the sound. It takes you a moment to peer through the rain, but soon you can see a figure stepping out of a sleek black car that is parked on the curb.
The same car that dropped you off just moments ago.
Why hasn't he left yet?
Furrowing your brow with confusion, you step forward, but then you see him.
As the figure turns towards you, even from this distance, you’re still able to recognize his face. Why wouldn’t you, when you have been looking at it, memorizing it, adoring it throughout the 5 years you have known him? His eyes glint as they meet yours across the way and he calls out your name once more, leaving you frozen, speechless.
“Wait for me!”
Kim Taehyung, little do you know, I have been waiting for you all my life.
He starts running towards you. Through the rain, splashing through puddles, getting drenched all over again. Not even bothering to pull up his hood as he runs to reach you, his eyes never leave your gaze, braving the monster that is the storm.
You shake your head almost in disbelief as he comes to a stop before you, drenched from head to toe. He’s dripping almost as much as the clouds around you, his hair now plastered to his face. The rain has turned it from its normal dark brown shade to a deep pitch black. His clothes stick tightly to his body from the rain, all efforts to dry off in the car now futile. He shivers a bit from the cold, his teeth slightly chattering as he stands before you, those eyes boring into yours.
He must be so uncomfortable, so cold, and yet…
His eyes can’t stop shining.
You look up at him, half stunned.
“Thank goodness you heard me. I thought I would have to chase you inside.” He says, chuckling to himself. Stunned, you are frozen, your eyes wide and searching his. He notices the strange expression and tilts his head, confused.
“What is it?” he asks, but you don’t answer. He looks left and right as though he weren't the cause of your stare before bending forward and whispering…
“Do I have something on my face?”
At his question, you can’t help but chuckle.
“Yes.” You nod, lowering your satchel to rest by your hip once more and reaching around his neck, pulling the now soaked and heavy fabric of hood up to cover his head. “You have quite a few things on your face.”
Before pulling away, you can't help but absentmindedly brush a bit of his hair out of his face, your hand resting on his cold but soft cheek. He doesn’t complain, just stares at you with wide expectant eyes. His hands itch to raise and keep your comforting hand there on his cheek, but he’s too late as you slowly pull away, meeting those dark mysterious eyes.
“What were you doing?” You ask, raising a hand to shield your eyes to see him better and he stands straight, clearing his throat.
“I never got your name.” He says quite plainly, shocking you a bit.
“You came out here...for my name?” you ask, quite incredulously. “I’m sorry I--”
You’re cut off, by the hand that he holds out to you, a smirk playing on his lips.
“I’m Kim Taehyung, what’s your name?” Taking his hand after a moment, you shake it.
“My name is Lin Yen, it’s nice to meet you.” You reply and he smiles broadly, his eyes seeming to shine with a million stars.
"Was that all?” You ask him, having to raise your voice over the growing torrent of rain.
“Hardly.” He murmurs under his breath, so soft that you can't hear him. Squinting your eyes at him, you push your hair away from your face, the wind playing with it violently.
“What did you say?” You call out to him, wincing as another howl of wind shrieks in your ear. He doesn’t respond, just turns to you and holds out his hand. You give him an incredulous look, thinking he wants another handshake, but he smiles, shaking his head slightly.
“Give me your phone.” he requests, and you sigh in exasperation.
“Tae, we're in the middle of a storm, I don't--”
“I don’t care.” He says, cutting you off and you regard him in silence. “Besides, you're short enough that I could be your umbrella. So you don’t have to be so worried about the rain.” You raise your eyebrow at his statement, a bit offended. He notices your expression, but at the sight of it, his smile only grows wider, mischief playing in his eyes.
“You did not just call me short.” You warn him, crossing your arms across your chest as you wait for his response. He rolls his eyes, shrugging a bit before stepping forward, so close that he’s hovering over you.
“Just stating the facts, sweetheart,” Taehyung replies, raising his brow as though asking for a challenge. You narrow your eyes at him, pursing your lips a bit before he smirks and speaks once more. “You’re like a little fairy, and I’m your protective tree.”
He chuckles, sliding his forefinger under your chin before you pull away with a scoff. Just because some people have the biological genes that make them as tall as the freaking sky…
Tired of his incessant teasing, you raise your hand, take his nose within your fingers, and twist it lightly in retaliation, as though you were stealing it from him. He blinks, a bit surprised as you pull away smirking. Holding your thumb between your fore and middle finger, you wave your hand in front of his face, brandishing it as though it were your prize before turning on your heel and walking away.
“Come on, Mr. Tree.” You call over your shoulder and after a moment, he follows you. When you reach the small overhang above the entrance to your apartment complex, you stop and turn around to him, no longer bare to the storm. Giving him a triumphant smile, you turn to your satchel, slightly humming to yourself. “Looks like you don’t have to be an umbrella anymore.”
“Your loss, for your information I am an excellent tree.” He scoffs, rolling his eyes before resting his hands behind his neck and peeking into your apartment complex. The doors are glass, so it's not hard to see through and as you glance up from your tiny task, you smile at how cute and innocent his expression seems. When your hands finally close around your phone, you let out a small gasp of excitement, startling him. He jumps, his hands falling and resting on his chest as though to try and calm his pounding heart. Pulling it out of your satchel, you try your hardest not to burst out into laughter at the sight of his surprised expression.
“You okay there, Mr. Leafalot?” You ask and he scoffs, a bit annoyed, his soft lips pursing into a small pout.
“For one thing, I have no idea what that means.” You bite back on your laugh, snorting a bit as you raise your hand to hide your ever-growing smile.
“For another, I am perfectly fine, thank you.” Scoffing, he rubs the back of his neck glancing away from you for a moment.
“Honestly, I don't need a clumsy Tinker Bell telling me to be careful.” You roll your eyes, deciding to ignore the slight taunt he just directed your way.
“Whatever, Peter Pan.” You shoot back, earning a slightly surprised look from him. He opens his mouth to reply but you cut him off, holding your phone out to him. He looks at it, then back at you, a question waiting in his eyes. After a moment, you grow tired of waiting and sigh, lagging your arm a bit. “Didn’t you ask to see my phone?”
His eyes light with realization and he nods as though he has forgotten why he was there. He takes the phone from you, your fingers brushing against his before you draw away. As he glances at your home screen, he smirks.
“So...am I your bias?”
You glance up at him, a bit confused by his question, but then you realize.
He has your phone.
The same phone that has him...
On your home screen.
As your wallpaper.
Inwardly, you curse, trying to ignore the blush rising in your cheeks, and lunge forward, trying to take it back. He laughs, dodging and holding your phone out of your reach.
“What's wrong, Tinker?” he antagonizes, grinning like an idiot as he blocks you with his arm.
Curse your tiny arms.
“Taehyung!” you whine, the embarrassment clean on your face. He just laughs, his fingers playing on your screen doing God knows what as he holds you back. You droop on his arm, pouting as he shows no signs of pulling away, nor giving the phone back.
“What did you even need it for?” you complain, slipping off of his arms and crossing your arms once more. Having finished, he turns back to you, smirking. You tilt your head a bit confused as he hands you your phone. Cautiously, you take it, wondering what he’s done.
“See for yourself.” He instructs.
As soon as you see it, your eyes widen.
He opened your contacts and entered one, the new contact set up and filling your screen. On it, he entered a phone number and titled the contact as Your TaeTae with a purple heart next to it. You breathe out a stunned scoff, before looking up to see him smiling at you. A soft, but innocent smile, which shows his hope and unanswered questions. You smile back, touched at his gesture, and still caught in slight disbelief.
“Is this real?” you ask and he nods. Still unsure, you chuckle a bit shakily turning back to the phone. “I mean, this isn’t your manager's phone number or something…?”
He rolls his eyes before stepping forward and taking your hand into his own, gently cutting you off. You meet his gaze with wide eyes and he holds it with his deep ones before turning back to your phone. You still have your hand around it, the same hand which he holds in his own, a gentle touch that never ceases to fill you with warmth.
You watch as he saves the contact to your phone. Held in beautiful silence, the two of you watch as it registers. Once it's saved, he presses the call button and puts it on speaker just as it starts dialing. It holds out three long beeps before a muffled sound can be heard.
A ringtone echoing from Taehyung's back pocket.
You watch in silence as he pulls it out, holding it next to your phone, an unknown caller ID flashing on his screen. The two of you watch as your soft beeping and his ringtone mix together in a strange symphony. That is, until Tae pulls away, answering the call and holding his phone to his ear. It takes you a moment, but as he softly nudges you, you raise yours to your ear, murmuring a soft response.
“Hello?” He smirks at your faint whisper before replying.
“Hello, is this Tinker Bell?” He asks in the same soft, quiet voice, subtly mocking you. But you catch it, and narrow your eyes at him, playfully smacking him in the arm. He winces, pouting, but you don’t buy it and ignore him.
“It is she, is this Peter Pan?” He wrinkles his nose at the nickname, and you scoff, looking away.
Like Tinker Bell is any better?
“No.” He answers, dropping the mocking voice, his deep silky one returning. At the sound of it, you look up, wondering why he turned so serious all of a sudden. He meets you with those large dark hooded eyes, looking at you with an unreadable expression.
“This is Kim Taehyung.” He takes a step forward, so close you can feel the heat radiating off of him, his smell wafting over you once more.
“This is real.”
You look into his eyes, take in his face, the serene look he holds and everything seems to fade away. There’s only you and him, the rain far away, your troubles falling behind you. There’s only one thing that matters.
After a moment, he slowly smiles, ruffling your hair softly. You flinch, raising your hands to protect your head just as he pulls away.
“I’ll see you later, Tinker Bell.” Stepping back, he raises his hand, waving goodbye before turning on his heel and running off into the rain.
You smile, a bit stunned as you watch him until he rounds the corner around the car and opens the door, looking up at you one last time. You smile, and dramatically wave goodbye to him. He laughs, you can hear it, though it may be faint, as he waves back.
Then he’s gone.
The door closes and you watch the car as it drives away. You stare after it long after it's gone and though you're still smiling, it's almost as though you're returned to your dark and empty self.
As though when he left, he took all the light with him.
Sighing, you shake yourself off.
Now is not the time to lose yourself.
So what if the dream has gone?
You promised yourself you would be strong. You promised yourself not to fall.
So you won’t.
Before you turn away, you look down at your phone, which is still open to Taehyung's contact. You smile at the sight of it, a small sign that what just happened was real, and not a dream. Smiling to yourself, you tap on the empty profile and replace it with the same picture you have on your home screen. Smiling like an idiot, you save the contact changes and are about to turn to the door before you see it.
The option to send him a message.
Licking your lips, you raise your hand to your bottom lip, absentmindedly playing with it as you contemplate whether or not you should do it. After a moment, you press the option and watch in anticipation as it brings you to the empty chat page, waiting for you to type. Biting your bottom lip, your fingers fly across the screen. Sweet and simple, you smile once it's finished, adding a purple heart at the end before pressing SEND. The transaction done, you press your home screen button before turning it to sleep, pocketing the phone safely in your satchel once more.
Taking one last look at the rain, where your dream faded away not a moment ago, you sigh with content before turning on your heel and pushing open the door to enter the apartment complex.
And somewhere amongst that onslaught of endless rain, Taehyung, driving down the slick streets of Seoul, receives your message. He opens it, finding it to belong to an unknown number. But when he reads it, he knows it's you.
Goodbye, Peter Pan
After all, who else would call him that?
Smiling, he sends back a purple heart before pocketing his phone and driving farther and farther away.
And yet…
It’s almost as though he never left.

Chapter 9
Tumblr media
"And how am I supposed to learn to control them if they forbid me to do anything?" Lily asks from the back seat.
“We’ll talk to your father. Depending on what happens, we’ll send them the necessary equipment,” informs Fury.
"Depending on what happens?"
"Legal aspects.”
"As which?"
"Lily, one problem at a time," Nat interrupts.
“Fine. Where are we going?"
"Do you want a donut?"
"Sure!"
The van pulls up outside the Randy’s Donuts store, Fury comes out. They both look at him from inside the car. Tony’s sitting on the huge donut.
"Why did we come for him?” She grits her teeth, remembering the annoyance towards her father.
"You two should talk," Nat says.
"I don’t want to.”
"If you want us to help you, that is the condition.”
Lily turns away from the window and folds her arms looking at the redhead.
"You didn't say anything about conditions.”
"Now there are.”
"It's not fair,” She sighs and then looks at Nat's outfit. "Why do you wear that? Is it your super spy uniform?"
"Something like that. You like it?"
“You look weird, but I like it. Do you have weapons or explosives?"
“Perhaps."
The agent receives an order from her intercom. She responds and returns to the girl.
"Come on, I'll buy you a donut."
They both get out of the truck and enter the premises. Nat asks Lily a chocolate donut and walks to the chairs where Tony and Fury are, while the girl takes the donut from her and sits in an armchair away from them, with her back to them.
"Huh!" Tony says when he sees Natasha in a new outfit "You're... fired.”
"That's not up to you,” answers the redhead sitting down.
"Tony, I want you to meet Agent Romanoff,” adds Fury.
“Hi."
"I'm a S.H.I.E.L.D. shadow. Once we knew you were ill or out of control, I was tasted to you by Director Fury. Besides taking care of your daughter in risky situations,” She tilts her head towards Lily.
Tony frowns and looks away to meet the little girl, eating a donut while she swings her legs. He goes back to the redhead.
"I suggest you apologize,” answers Tony.
"You've been very busy," continues Fury. “You made your girl your CEO, you’re giving away your stuff, you neglect your daughter without taking into account the high priority over her powers, you let your friend fly way with your suit. Now, if I did’nt know better—”
Tony rolls his eyes. Again, someone else scolding him for whatever stupid thing he does. Although he now knows that he did screw up, he doesn't want to hear it again. He has enough with his own mind.
"You don't know better. I didn’t give it to him. He took it."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, He took it?" asks Fury. “You’re Iron Man and he just took it? The Little brother walked in there, kicked your ass and took your suit?" He says. “Is that possible?"
“Well, according to Mr. Stark’s database security guidelines, there are redundancies to prevent unauthorized usage,” answers Nat.
Tony snorts.
"What do you want from me?"
“What do we want from you? Uh-uh,” Fury says as Natasha gets up. “What do you want from me? You have become a problem, a problem I have to deal with. Contrary to your belief, you are not the center of my universe,” He scolds him.
In that, Natasha injects something into Tony making him scream. The conversation is overheard by Lily, but only when he complains does she turn around.
"Oh, god, are you gonna steal my kidney and sell it?" Tony asks.
Natasha moves Tony's head and Fury sees the lines on Stark's neck slowly disappear.
Fury explains what the substance they just injected does to him.
“Give me a couple of boxes of that. I'll see right as rain."
"It's not a cure, it just abates the symptoms,” Nat explains.
"You need to get back to work, Stark," Fury says and Tony sighs. "And by Stark, I mean both," He points back.
Lily realizes that he sees her and turns away.
"I don't think she wants to work as a team now."
“She has her reasons. You are a terrible companion.”
***
They all return home to Malibu. Tony and Nick sit on the terrace, now destroyed. They both talk about the reactor, the technology that Howard Stark couldn't finish, and about Vanko father and son.
Fury takes it upon himself to explain everything to Tony, while Lily returns from her room after making sure that no one had destroyed her. Nat had told him what happened with Rhodes and Tony.
The little girl walks to sit on the stairs that lead to the terrace, listening to the adults.
“You told me I hadn't tried everything. What do you mean I haven’t tried everything? What haven’t I tried?" Tony points out.
"He said that you were the only person with the means and knowledge to finish what he started.”
"He said that?"
“Are you that guy? Hmm? Are you? ‘Cause if you are, then you can solve the riddle of your heart. Or maybe, I should be discussing this with your daughter."
Tony winces and shakes his head. Lily frowns.
"I don't know where you get your information, but he wasn't my biggest fan," says Tony.
"I'm not either," adds Lily, resting her chin on her arm. Tony glances at her.
"What do you remember about your dad?"
This catches the girl's attention.
“He was cold, he was calculating. He never told me he loved me. He never even told me he liked me, so it’s a Little tough for me to digest then you’re telling me he said the whole future was riding on me an’s passing it down. I don't get that."
Hearing that, Lily feels a little sorry for Tony. Only a little. She imagines how  could be her grandfather when Tony was her age.
"You're talking about a guy whose happiest day was when he shipped me off to boarding School.”
"That’s not true.”
"Well, then, clearly you knew my dad better than I did.”
“As a matter of fact, I did. You can believe and think many things about him, but knowing all that, do you really want Lily to think the same about you?" says Fury and then finishes his drink. More agents appear to drop off several suitcases. "Well then, what else will I know about one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
"What?"
All three get up. Lily walks over to see the suitcase.
"What’s this?" Tony asks pointing at her.
"You got this, right?" asks Fury.
"Got what? I don’t even know what I’m supposed to get,” answers Tony nervously.
“Natasha will remain a floater at Stark with her cover of her intact. And you remember Agent Coulson, right?"
“Yeah."
They both greet each other.
"Oh, and Tony,” says Fury before leaving. "After you fix this whole mess, we should talk about Lily's new training, she needs it more than you do. And remember, I got my eye on you.”
The latter makes Lily laugh.
Natasha and Coulson explain to Tony what to do and what not to do, while Lily walks over to the suitcase.
Property of H.Stark
"Okay, time to work, Kid," says Tony.
“No," Lily walks away. "We've been together for several hours and you haven't even apologized, and now you're just hoping that I'll help you?"
Tony raises an eyebrow, shifting uncomfortably.
“Basically."
Lily looks at him in disbelief.
"I don't want to, I won't help you,” She says and then returns to her room.
***
The truth is that Lily does want to help him, but she knows he doesn't deserve it. Moreover, she cannot be alone in her room doing nothing. She wants to know what’s in that suitcase, but she doesn't want Tony to find out about her.
An idea crosses her mind. She may not be the stealthiest, but she is the only thing she has. She goes into the living room of her destroyed house and presses the hidden button on the emergency elevator that goes alone to the workshop. She enters it and after a few seconds arrives at the workshop.
All the lights are off and Tony is sitting in an armchair facing a projection. Lily sneaks up behind the old project.
They both watch the old Howard Stark tapes, rehearsing the presentation of what is now Stark Expo. The man has several mistakes with words, but something else calls him the attention to the girl. Just as a little boy comes out the other side of the desk where Howard presents a model. The boy takes one of the pieces and Howard notices.
“Tony, what are you doing back there? What is that? Put that back!” He scolds him.
Lily leans in to get a better look at the boy version of her father. Now she can see the resemblance between Howard and Tony when scolding their children, but is also fun to watch.
Several takes with more errors follow.
“So, from all of us at Stark Industries, I’d like to personally show you my ass,” says Howard. Lily can't help but laugh at his words, giving away her presence. Although Tony had listened to her since she arrived.
"I know you're in there, kid. You're too curious to miss this,” She comes out of her hiding place, crawling on the ground until she reaches the other side of the projector.
"I'm still mad.”
Tony sighs.
"I know,” He leans in the chair and sets aside a notebook.
“Tony," says Howard causing both of them to return to the screen. “You’re too young to understand this right now, so I thought I would put this film for you. I built this for you. And Someday you'll realize that it represents a whole lot more than just people’s inventions. It represents my life’s work. This is the key to the future,” He shows the model and the reactor. “I'm limited by the technology of my time, but one day you'll figure this out. And when you do, you will change the world. What is and always will be my greatest creation… is you,” The tape ends.
"Do you think Grandpa Howard would love me?" Lily asks when the lights come on.
Tony laughs when he hears ‘Grandpa Howard’, he’s sure he wouldn’t like to be called that.
"I don’t know. Maybe he would love you more than me,” He looks at Lily.
"I am more adorable than you.”
Tony nods, unable to fight back. He sighs. He thinks about the words of his father and wonders why he was never like this with him when they were together. Why does he have to find out about this from a tape or from other people? Then he thinks of his own daughter and Fury's words come back to him.
Tony doesn't want Lily to grow up thinking that he was worse than Howard, he knows what he did.
"I'm sorry I yelled at you that day," He begins.
"And?" She says crossing her arms.
"And sorry for what you had to witness at the party.”
"And?"
Tony purses his lips.
“I'm sorry I failed you. I shouldn't have left you alone, or yell at you, or lie to you.”
"Nat told me that your chest was killing you,” He nods. "Didn't it occur to you to ask for help?"
“It is somewhat complicated. When you say that you are dying, everyone panics.”
"But then they help you.”
 "I guess so.”
Lily feels a lump in her throat. Just remembering that, she again feels afraid of losing her father without even knowing something about what was really going on.
"I don't like that you hide things from me or lie to me," she says with a broken voice.
“Sorry."
"No, you must promise that you won’t do it again,” she interrupts him.
Tony watches Lily's determination.
"I promise.”
“Mr. Fury said we are a team. You must do your part,” she says as she gets up.
"Mr. Fury?"
"Dad!"
"Okay, okay, I got it!” He argues. In that he remembers an unfinished business. Tony stayed for a moment in the destroyed mansion and as he passed through the kitchen he saw a burned box on the sides.
He walks over to his desk with Lily following him. He removes the remains from the box and carefully takes the gift from him.
"It's a good try…”
"But you didn't even open it," she complains.
"I'm sorry, but you were missing some details.”
Lily rolls her eyes.
"I put it together by watching a video, it's not as if you had explained each part to me.”
“That can change. Do you remember the rules we agreed upon the first time you were in the workshop?" She nods. “Forget the question limit. From now on, you must ask.”
Lily can't help but smile.
“Agree."
"So, are we good now?"
"Yup, but if you do something wrong, I'll tell Mr. Fury to scold you again."
"He didn't scold me," He complains.
"Whatever you say. Now what shall we do?"
Tony sighs and then winces.
“I must go to Pepper, stay here and cover me with the secret agents. I will not be late.”
"Good luck.”
***
After a few hours, Tony returns with the demo that his father had shown on the tapes. He arms it on various tables.
“Cool," says Lily approaching.
Tony orders Jarvis to scan every detail so he can manipulate it, he takes the hologram and moves it away from the table.
“Open your eyes wide, Kid. The answer to our problems is here,” says Tony giving her a bench and he sits on another. They both look at the model.
"What do we have to look for?"
"A new element.”
“Easy," she says sarcastically.
"My father put it here, we just have to move some things,” He brings the projection towards the center, a sphere.
"He must have something at the core," Tony whispers.
Lily sees what is around.
"What if…?”
"What?"
"What if we put everything together?"
Tony frowns, but an idea crosses his mind.
Little by little, Tony is gathering the important aspects towards the center of the Expo and in each step, he’s explaining Lily. In the end he manages to find a new element, the possible solution to the problem of intoxication.
"Dead for almost twenty years, and still taking me to school,” He says watching his creation. "Nice work, Kid.”
She smiles.
"How will you make it work?" She asks.
"Unfortunately, it’s impossible to synthesize," reports Jarvis.
Tony gets up from his chair.
“Get ready for a major remodel, fellas! We're back in hardware mode. C’mon, kid.”
Between Lily and Tony - mostly Tony - they break down some walls, open the floor and use any energy source in the mansion to connect it to the workshop part. They both open some boxes that S.H.I.E.L.D left them and use every material they have on hand.
"Hold the lamp," Tony tells her.
"It's what I'm doing,” Lily claims while she also tries to see what Tony is doing.
"More to the right.”
"What does that do?"
“Gives more energy. Bring the lamp closer…”
In the meantime, neither of them notices that Phil walks into the shop.
"I heard you broke the perimeter,” says the agent.
"Whoops" says Lily.
"Uh, yeah. That was, like, three years ago. Where have you been?" Tony answers.
"I was doing some stuff.”
"Yeah, well, us too, and it worked.”
Coulson checks the boxes. He pulls out some kind of unfinished shield.
"What’s that?" asks Lily.
“It’s exactly what we need to make this work. Lily, take it,” She obeys. "Lift the coil,” He says to Coulson and between them they lift it up a bit. Enough for Lily to put it under. Tony sets the leveler. “Perfectly level. I'm busy what do you want?"
Coulson warns him that he must go on another mission and says goodbye.
"Glad to see you are a part of it, Lily.”
"It was not easy,” she answers making him laugh.
The hours pass and they both go back to work. In the end, Tony gives Lily some special glasses and explains what they will do.
The energy is concentrated in the device.
"Initializing prismatic accelerator," reports Jarvis. Suddenly a fine laser is projected and reflected off a material.
"Get behind me,” Tony orders him.
Stark operates the machine with the laser, but not before cutting part of the wall where he directs it.
"Oh oh.”
“Oops!"
With difficulty, the laser reaches the small inverted triangle that Tony prepared so that the power would be trapped there. After a few minutes, they turn off the machine. Tony approaches and with tweezers takes the triangle and puts it in the reactor. The item’s accepted.
"We did it?" Lily asks.
“We did it."
She sighs in relief, right now she feels the exhaustion. She walks over to the couch and sits on it.
"Wake me up when we're in trouble," she warns him.
"Why would we be in trouble?"
"Rhodey says we have that talent.”
"Makes sense.”
In that a beep is heard.
"Incoming call and with a blocked number, sir,” warns Jarvis.
“My phone privilege is reinstated. Lovely. Kid, we have the phone back!"
“Great," she answers from the couch.
"Coulson. How’s the land of enchantment?"
"Hey. Tony. How you doing?” The voice is unknown to Lily so she settles in the chair and leans out. "I doubled cycle."
"You what?"
“You told me double cycle’s more power. Good advice.”
"You sound pretty sprightly for a dead guy.”
"What?" whispers Lily. She gets up and walks over to Tony. He makes a sign so that she doesn't make noise.
"You too,” answers the man.
Tony removes his microphone from the call.
"Trace him,” he orders Jarvis.
“Now, the true history of Stark name will be written. Your secrets will be revealed at any moment."
"What is he talking about, dad?"
Tony ignores her and keeps checking the call.
“What your father did to my family over forty years, I will do to you in forty minutes and I will make sure your offspring disappear. I hope you're ready,” He says, and then hangs up.
Tony sees Justin Hammer's announcement at Stark Expo on another screen, and based on the coordinates of the call, Vanko may have something planned for the event. He gets up and takes the new reactor.
"Dad?"
Stark replaces the reactor in his chest, after coughing a bit, the man feels the difference.
"Time to go,” He says walking towards his armor.
"Hey! No. You promised—”
"I have to go, Lily."
“But, you must tell me what happens. You promised not to lie to me,” She gets in her way. He sighs.
"Vanko, the man who tried to kill me in Monaco, wants to do something at the Expo and I have to stop him.”
“What does he plan to do?"
"I'm not sure. You must stay here. I'll talk to Fury about sending agents here. Turn on the TV, I'm sure they'll put it on,” He continues on his way.
“Dad," He turns again. "Be careful, please.”
Tony smiles and nods.
"Stay in the workshop in case I need your help.”
"You got it.”

Harry Hook x Sparrow!Reader - oneshot - WICKED
These are very similar requests so im just smashing them together!
random-thoughts-and-spoken-words
Hi! I love all of your stories, they’re so well written and amazing! So, I have a request. Could you do a short little thing about the reader being in the end of the first movie, but she chooses to be evil, and goes back to the Isle for Harry, who’s really happy she’s back. Then could you end it with a week passed and Ben sends men to ask Harry and the reader back over? You could add Gil and Uma to that list too. If you can’t do it, that’s fine. Love all of your works!!
@random-thoughts-003
could you the reader choosing evil at end of first movie, for Harry and because she truly evil. she goes back, rejoins old gang, Uma’s crew. creates chaos more than before, kidnaps Ben. When core four try to say she’s good, she purposely almost kills one of them. in third movie, she doesn’t make it past the barrier and has to wait for Harry and Gil. when they come back, prepared to live out their days, they find Reader somehow got even the worst villains to give up their territory and let the crew steal their things. the sea three get to the ship, the crew was 100% better fighters. when the barrier is taken down, Harry tries to convince reader to come, but she says she’s waiting for someone. Thinking she’s cheating on him, he stays there to see who she is meeting. Turns out it’s her father Jack Sparrow and they plan to make the Isle into the modern Tortuga. Harry walks over and Reader introduces him to her father as boyfriend. later on, when he confesses he thought she was cheating, could you end it with her “Oh Harry, I may be evil in my soul, but I’d never go so low as that.” (They started dating at the beginning of second movie.)
Tumblr media
How dare they, they would just…UP AND ABANDON THE REST OF THE ISLE?! Rotten to the core my ass.
You snarled, turning away, pausing as a hand fell on your shoulder. “(y/n) is good too! You have no ide- AH!” your arm flourished out, a gleaming switch-blade in your hand, slicing at Mals arm.
“get away from me you traitor” you growled, glaring down at the purple-haired fae, who started up at you in shock, holding her sliced arm close to her chest.
“wha-wh-(y/n)?” Evie stuttered, grasping Mals shoulder and pulling her back “what's gotten into-“
You snarled, turning and walking out of the cathedral. Ben and Evie raced after you, calling your name “(y/n)! wait!” Ben yelled, you huffed spinning around and crossing your arms.
“what do you need princey?” you drawled “I have an isle to get back to” Ben tilted his head in confusion, bless his soul, good intentions, but poorly executed.
“why? Why would you want to go back to the isle” he asked, genuinely curious, evie was frowning, looking concerned.
“I left assuming my friends would join me after everything, but since that didn’t happen, im going back, im not abandoning them.”
You spun on your heel, stomping off and making your way to the limos, snatching a bridge remote, you paused, groaning and walking to the dorms, for once happy that you had a room all to yourself, grabbing all your gear and stuffing it in a bag.
You snatched your compass and hat, fixing the tricorn on your head and hefting your bag over your shoulder, heading back to the limos.
You unlocked one and tossed your bag in the back, ripping off the flags and the hood ornament, pocketing it and making your way to the driver's seat.
“(y/n)!” you paused, looking back, pup, the shorter boy trotting after you, dude running after him.
You sighed, leaning back on the car “what do you want pup” you muttered, a sneer on your lip.
He stopped a few feet in front of you, slightly out of breath “you don’t know how to drive, ill take you” you stopped, staring wide-eyed at him.
“Carlos the fuck” you muttered, “you’re coming back with me?”
“no” he shook his head “no im dropping you off, I understand why you want to go back, but if you go alone someone could get that remote and leave the isle, we both know there are some people who deserve to be on the isle.”
You slowly nodded, you might be evil, but you weren’t heartless, and beasty boy had been trying to right the wrongs of his father.
You sighed, walking around to the passenger side and opening the door, plopping down and nodding to Carlos “well, im not waiting all day!”
He beamed, sliding into the driver's seat dude hopping in after him and climbing into the back, head peeking through the sliding window door.
You slid down into your seat, watching as Auradon passed by in a blur, turning into the ocean as a golden bridge built below you.
=
You gave a salute to Carlos as he nodded back at you, turning the limo around and driving back off the isle. you breathed in, looking to your right, the large metal tube leading to the docks letting the smell of the ocean into the old garage.
“home sweet home” you muttered, squaring your shoulders and walking through the tube.
You smirked as you saw the common folk walking around, some fishing some simply just sitting in the cloud glazed sun.
“(y/n)” a thick boyish accent came from your left, you spun, a smile breaking through your lips as you spotted the boy you had missed so much.
His ocean blue eyes were glazed with surprise, the line of fish he was holding dropping to the deck, his mouth gaping open.
“yer- yer back! I thou-Oof!” he wheezed, tumbling back when you charged at him and rammed into his torso, wrapping your arms around him and holding on tightly.
He caught himself on a barrel, chuckling as he hooked his hook on his pants belt loop, wrapping his arms around you and nuzzling your neck. “I've missed yeh lassie” he muttered, hand reaching up to cup the back of your head “when did yeh get back?”
“About five minutes ago”  you mumbled, leaning heavily into him, pouting as he tugged your shirt to pull you off of him.
“well, glad ta have yeh back lassie” he patted your cheek, spotting your bag behind you. He picked ti up and slugged it over his shoulder, giving you his arm and leading you to the chip shop.
“LOOK WHOS BACK!” he hollered, the patrons looking up with glares, looking back down quickly as they spotted you.
“(y/n)!” the crew yelled, uma coming out from the kitchen and smirking.
“there you are, I knew you wouldn’t leave us behind!” you grinned, breaking away from Harry and leaping towards Uma and colliding into her.
“I would never” you chuckled, rubbing your cheek into her head “im not like the traitors” you pulled away, tensing as you prepared to be tackled by the crew.
Which you were.
The rest of the day was spent taunting the tv which showed the after party of the coronation. And a rowdy party for your return.
=
You hummed as you walked the allys of the isle, harry next to you, arm around your shoulder. Ben stepped out from the ally, blinking surprised as he locked eyes with you.
“(y/n- AH!” Ben let out a yelp as Gonzo and Bonny jumped at him, gagging him and tying his wrists together.
“let's go beasty boy!” bonny cackled, her and gonzo dragging him away, you hummed, patting Harry's back as he swaggered forward to taunt the traitors.
You leaned on the wall next to you, flipping out your switchblade to pick your nails.
A few moments later harry reemerged, once more wrapping his arm around your shoulders and leading you back to the ship, talking about how pups' hair was weird and Jay had lost his touch.
=
Hours later, you stood next to uma, eyes scanning Mal, Evie, Carlos, Jay, and Lonnie. Carlos held the wand, handing it to mal as harry brought ben forward.
“hol’ up!” uma called, mal pausing in handing the wand to uma, and harry stopping ben in his tracks. “too easy, we wanna see it work!”
Mal swallowed harshly, eyes flashing about “you always were quite the drama queen” mal sneered, looking behind her at dude.
Uma nodded, rolling her eyes, “oh and nothing too big or ben is fish bait!”
Mals' eyes flashed with worry, she turned, waving the wand about “although it may seem absurd, turn your bark into a word!” nothing, dude just blinked at her.
Uma turned to you, rolling her eyes. Mal let out a nervous laugh, growling at dude through her teeth “talk dog!”
“Does this vest make me look fat?” you blinked….alrighty then, dude could talk. So the wand was real…hopefully.
“give me the wand!” uma yelled, reaching for it, mal stepping back and pointing to ben.
“give me Ben!” she yelled back, you huffed, waving Harry forward. He pushed ben to his knees, sword ready to swing.
As uma took the wand, you watched as mal hurried to rush ben and the others out….and jay guarding a barrel of swords.
…it was a trick.
You snarled, watching as nothing harped as Uma cast the spell. “NO!” she screamed, snapping the fake wand on her knee “YOU DO NOT GET TO WIN EVERYTIME!” she turned to the crew.
“GET ‘EM!” in the corner of your eye you spotted Carlos whip out a slingshot, shooting gloves filled with a colored substance.
As the hit, they exploded into smoke. you stumbled back into harry who tucked you into his side and covered you with his jacket. You growled, unsheathing your sword and bolting forward, slicing at mal, who hardly had time to doge.
You nicked her neck, she stared at you in shock, yelping as you spun around and sliced at her legs, she jumped back, Ben grabbing her arm and running towards the tunnel that leads to the old garage.
“(y/n) please, we know you're better than this come back to aura-AH!” you leaped forward growling as you thrust your sword at his chest, ben falling back in fright.
“don’t you dare try, im bad to the soul, and I ain't comin’ back” you blocked a swing from Lonnie, the black-haired girl swallowing in fright as she locked eyes with you.
You huffed, pushing her back and kicking her stomach, dodging a stab from Carlos.
“ ‘Scuse me pup” you smirked, disarming him and gripping his wrist and flipping him around and slamming him to the ground.
--small time skip--
You screamed, throwing your sword to the ground, watching as Mal walked away. “UGG! OUT OF MY WAY!” Uma pushed past you and Harry, ducking into a shortcut to the garage.
You seethed, walking back to the ship, slamming open the door to yours and Harry's room, screaming as you slammed your fist into the hanging withered punching bag.
“lass, please calm-love” Harry walked in after you, watching as you tore up your fist punching the cracking old leather on the bag.
“AHHHHH” you let out a harsh scream “IT'S NOT FAIR!” you collapsed to the floor, Harry dropping with you and cradling you in his arms.
“Hey, hey” he cooed “it’s okay love, uma will find a way, well get off this hell rock” you sniffed, letting Harry's thumb brush away your tears.
“I know, we will” you muttered, cuddling into his chest. Harry picked you up, laying you on your bed. He shucked his shoes off and plopped next to you, tugging you into his chest.
“take a nap love, yeh need to have a rest” you hiccuped, burrowing into his chest and closing your eyes, slipping into a fitful nap.
=
You sighed, watching as Harry and Gil jumped through the barrier, smiling softly as Harry turned back and mouthed ‘ill be back for you’
You nodded, twisting around on your heel.
You had some jobs to do while they were gone.
=
Harry sighed, watching Auradon disappear from the limo window. At least he would be going back to (y/n). as he stepped out of the limo, Uma, and Gil following him, he noticed something odd.
The isle seemed…cleaner? Uma stepped next to him, spinning around in a small circle.
“what the fuck happened?” she muttered, a confused look on her face. “its…. I don’t know how to describe it?”
“ ello cap’n” harry grinned spinning around, bolting towards you as his eyes locked onto you.
“(y/n)!” he laughed, throwing his arms around you and picking you up, your legs wrapped around his waist. “gods I missed yeh”
“you were only gone for two days” you chuckled, running your hand through his hair, the other resting on his neck “but I missed you too”
Harry set you down on your feet, uma crashing into you “miss ya girl” you laughed, patting her back “missed ya to captain”
You broke away from her, leading them back to the ship. The three looked around, the usual big villans hulking around were yet to be seen. “look whos back!” a thick Scottish accent came from behind, an arm wrapping around Harry's shoulders, tugging him into their side and rubbing their knuckles into his head.
“how yeh doing lil’ bro? enjoying the life of a hero?” harry groaned, ducking under Harriet's arm.
“shut up Hettie” he muttered, pushing her away “where is everyone, not two days ago Frollo was screaming his ‘ead off just right there”
Harriet smirked “yer little girlfriend took over the isle, even scar and eq bowed under her heel” uma, harry, and Gil blinked in shock, looking to (y/n) who just shrugged and continued to walk to the ship.
Umas jaw dropped as they arrived, the crew was sparing together, and….they were a lot better than the last time she saw them.
Gonzo side flipped, avoiding bonny downswing, spotting uma as he twisted around to block a stab from Desiree.
“CAPTAIN!” he yelled, the crew yelled out with him, dropping their swords bolting down the gangplank and eagerly greeting uma.
“you’re back!”
“We missed you!”
“yer mas food is so shitty without ya!”
“cap'n! I dyed my hair, ya see!!!”
“I got a tattoo!!”
“I pierced my tongue!”
Uma rushed to rub her face, tears burning at her eyes, and here she though her crew dropped her as soon as she failed at cotillion.
You grinned, gesturing for gil to lift uma on his shoulders, as he did so uma let out a yelp a tear slipping down her cheek.
“whats her name!?” you called out, the crew sounding her name with resonance.
“UMA!”
“now lets party!” gil beamed, parading around the ship with uma on his shoulders, the crew rushing to grab the treasured rum and candy.
=
“lass come one, what are yeh waitin fer” Harry held out his hand, one foot crossing the barrier to Auradon.
“someone” you muttered, looking towards the ocean, but to harry, you were looking back towards the isle.
‘is….is she cheating on me?’ his heart hurt, after a year and a half of dating, you were just going to betray him like that.
Was it because he helped save Auradon??
“well,” he muttered “im waitin’ with yeh” you gave a shallow nod, not really listening.
An hour later, long after the freed vks and some villains had crossed the bridge. A certain ship appeared in the distance. You stood from your spot on the stairs, harry standing with you a heavy from on his face.
As the ship docked against the isle, harry felt confused….the person you were waiting for wasn’t even on the isle?
“DAD!” hol up wha-….HOLY FUCK JACK SPARROW?!”
“darling!” the now old pirate opened his arms, jack the monkey(who hadn’t aged in the years he had joined your father after Barbosa died) screeching in excitement, bouncing on jacks shoulder.
“oof” jack laughed as you collided with his chest, wrapping you in a tight hug.
“lass?” you turned a bright smile on your face, holding out your hand.
“harry! This is my dad, dad meet my boyfriend, Harry hook!” jack gestured for Harry to come close, holding out his own hand.
Harry grasped Jack's hand, gasping as he pulled him in for a hug.
“Good ta meet you lad, thank you for making my (y/n) happy all these years”
“so” Harry pulled back, looking from you to jack “why are yeh here”
“we’re turning this place into the new Tortuga!” you grinned, spinning around, arms wide open “pirate and sailor paradise!”
Harry laughed, “sounds awesome lass…oh was that why yeh took control of the isle?” you nodded.
“yep, couldn’t have Jafar or something try to take over”
Harry sighed, rubbing the back of his neck, “look lass, I need ta apologize fer somethin’” you tilted your head, raising your brow.
“for wha’?”
“I though ye were cheatin’ on me…when yeh said ye were waiting fer someone” you laughed, stepping close to Harry and hugging him.
“aw hookie, I may be evil, but I would never go as low as that~”
Harry snorted “I know, im sorry”
Jack smiled, looking around at the isle.
“master gibbs! I think its time to start fixin up this dump”
“aye captain!”
---the end---
I got this request back in January!! At least the longer more detailed one, forgot when I got the short one, but since they are VERY similar, I just mushed them together, thanks for reading and waiting!

Hey Omni! I suffer from bipolar disorder so I am wondering if you can do Owen having a manic episode.
Hi friend! I want to preface this like I do whenever I write about mental illness, or another area where I have no personal experience
I have only done the minimal amount of research to write this, and I apologize if the characterization seems off or is wrong. Please let me know if I have gotten something wrong and I will fix it
~~~
When Letty opened the door to one of Owen's many hideouts, she wasn't surprised by the sight that met her. Over the year she had worked with Owen, she had seen him in this state several times
He was standing in the middle of a controlled mess of information
All around him were chalkboards and whiteboards filled with notes, papers, and blueprints. In front of him was a table that had all sorts of bits and ends scattered on it
Owen himself was jumping from one thing to the other, constantly muttering under his breath. His frantic words were covered up by the radio playing in the background
Not bothering to quiet her footsteps, Letty walked towards him. Peering closely, she could see the dark circles bright as day under his too bright eyes
He didn't seem to notice her as he jumped back towards another whiteboard
"If I could just hire one more person, then this would be perfect. I need another man here, ready to jump with the goods when we grab them. When he jumps, we'll have an escape car at the bottom and we'll head back to here- Wait! Which car? It'll need to be nondescript but fast enough if we do get caught. Who do I know that could get me one on short notice? Tanaka? Is he available? But he just had a kid a few months back. Was it a boy or girl?"
Letty shook her head
She knew exactly how this would go
Owen would get caught up in a plan and wouldn't sleep more than an hour until he completed it. But then it was complete, he would always insist that he had enough energy to pull off the heist right there and then
But Letty knew he couldn't. Not when something even remotely shiny could distract him. He might talk a big game and insist on doing reckless things. Even going as far as doing stupid and dangerous things, but Letty knew nothing good would come of it
After repeating this several times, she knew how to deal with Owen. Or at least knew how to help him calm down enough
"Owen!"
It took several calls of his name, but finally, his head snapped up and he stared at her wide eyed
"Let?"
It almost broke her heart to see him almost shaking with pent up energy
"Good, you're here. You can help me plan." He said rapidly. "The national art museum is going to be showing off the world's largest diamond and were going to steal it. First we need to-"
"Why?"
Owen blinked at her owlishly
"Why what?"
"Why are we stealing it?"
Owen squinted at her
"We can't sell it, Oh. And you can't walk around wearing it either. So, why are we stealing it?"
"Because we can?" He said hesitantly
Letty sent him a flat look, but his eyes darted away from her and glanced back over his notes. She could tell she was losing his attention and fast
"Owen! Unless you're getting your mom an early birthday present, drop it."
"Late birthday present." He mumbled
"What?"
"It would be a late birthday present. Her birthday is in June."
"No, it's not."
"Yes, it is."
"Oh." Letty snapped. "Your mom's birthday is in December."
Owen lifted his head and stared at her
"Guess I forgot." He shrugged. "Deck is the one to remember those things."
Letty had never met Deckard, Owen's older brother, but she pitied him greatly
"When was the last time you ate?"
"Don't know."
"Owen. Think back and tell me."
"Thirty, no, thirty three hours ago."
"Owen!" She shouted, making him jump
"What?!" He glared at her
"How many times have I told you not to starve yourself!"
"I'm not! I just wasn't hungry."
"You're always hungry, Oh." Letty shook her head. "What do you want to eat?"
Owen turned towards her fully and had a thoughtful look
"Pizza? No, maybe sushi or something more Chinese. What about Mediterranean? You always love the shawarma at our favorite place."
Letty smirked slightly. At least his mind was off diamond heists
"Order whatever you want and have it delivered to my place. We'll eat there."
Owen nodded unconsciously, walking around the table and towards her. He was still mumbling under his breath about what he wanted to eat
Letty grabbed Owen's hand and led him outside towards her car. Shoving him inside, she sighed
She just knew there was going to be ten different take out deliveries waiting for then when they got back
~~~
I hope you enjoyed friend!

Y/N was woken up the following morning by Max. Her head was throbbing even more than the previous day as she sat up on the sofa she had been sleeping on. To make matters worse her arm was aching and her throat felt so tight she wasn’t sure if she’d be able to speak.
“Here, you should take these.” Max said holding out a pack of painkillers and a glass of water.
“Thanks.” Y/N’s voice sounded rough and she struggled to swallow the painkillers. She got to her feet, grabbed her bag off the floor and ruffled El’s hair before passing into the bathroom.
A quick look in the mirror told her she looked as bad as she felt, if not worse. Her cast was covered in dust, making the blue bandage look more grey; the bruise on her head had darkened overnight and the mark on her neck had turned from red to purple. The mark Billy’s hand had left. She pushed that thought away as soon as it appeared. It wasn’t Billy. She bit her lip to hold back the tears that threatened to fall as she reached into her bag. Luckily, she’d stopped off at her house and Max’s on the way to Mike’s the night before to get her, El and Max some spare clothes and toiletries. She changed and freshened up before walking back into the main room.
“What do we do now?” Max asked.
“We need to find Hopper.” Y/N sat on the sofa arm as the kids all looked at her. “But I couldn’t find him anywhere the other day when I was looking.”
“I can find him.” El spoke up
Everyone exchanged a glance before they all nodded. It was easier to get everything set up in Mike’s basement than it had been in the swimming bath changing rooms. The TV was easily turned to static and Mike already had a bandana. When everything was set in place, they all sat around the coffee table and let El do her thing.
After a few minutes, El broke the silence. “I found him.”
“Where is he?” Max asked as blood started running from El’s nose.
“Woods.”
“Woods?” Lucas echoed.
“He’s with… Will’s mom.”
“My-my mom?” The confusion very evident on Will’s face.
“What are they doing?” Y/N asked, wondering if this was why she hadn’t been able to find anyone when she was looking.
“Ill-annoy, they’re going to ill-annoy.” El sounded out.
A sudden knock on the door made them all jump. “Mike! Breakfast!”
“Not now mom!” Mike screamed back before turning back to El. “Illinois? Illinois, like the state? The state of Illinois?”
“Il-ill-annoy.” El shrugged.
“Awesome.” Y/N muttered as she laid back on the sofa and slung her good arm over her eyes. This week just kept getting better and better.
Max took El into the bathroom to clean up the blood from her nose as Mike got up and started pacing.  “Something’s not right. I can’t get Hopper off my back all summer and now, all of a sudden, he’s hiking with Will’s mom to Illinois? And Dustin’s MIA too? I mean this can’t be a coincidence.”
“What does it matter?” Lucas interrupted. “Bottom line is, they’re not here. It’s up to us.”
Mike shot him a glare. “Up to us to do what exactly?”
“Find Billy and stop him.” Lucas glanced at Y/N as she sat up and ran her good hand over her face.
“Okay, yeah, that’s a really nice sentiment, but even if El could find him again, and that’s a pretty big if, then what?” Mike looked from Lucas to Y/N.
“We find a way to save him, like we did for Will.” Y/N said, shooting Will a glance. He’d been very quiet throughout all of this.
“Yeah, we burn the shit out of him and make sure he doesn’t escape this time.” Lucas said grabbing the box of cocoa puffs off the table and taking a couple.
“Okay, then what?” Mike challenged.
“Then we win.” Lucas stated.
“No, see, that’s the problem. We don’t. We don’t win.” Mike was getting more agitated. “We got the mind flayer out of Will before and he just came right back. We don’t just have to stop Billy; we have to stop the mind flayer.”
“How in the hell do we do that?” Lucas asked.
“I don’t know.” Mike sighed.
Will spoke up for the first time. “Maybe El does.”
The three boys all got up and looked at the bathroom door.
“What are they still doing in there?” Mike huffed.
“I don’t know, girls just like hanging out in bathrooms.” Lucas said through a mouthful of cocoa puffs.
“Why?” Mike asked.
“Because they don’t want you to over hear them.” Y/N told them as she grabbed a handful of cocoa puffs from Lucas.
“They’re conspiring against me.” Mike said with complete seriousness.
Y/N snorted and Will turned to Mike in disbelief. “That’s what you’re concerned about right now?”
“It’s not my main concern. It’s just a sub concern.” Mike defended himself.
“I thought it was already over.” Will shot back.
“It’s not over okay, we’re just taking a break.” Mike didn’t sound convinced.
“She said she dumped your ass. That doesn’t sound like a break.” Will whisper-screamed.
Y/N snorted again. “Sounds like it’s over.”
“Yeah! Listen to Y/N!” Max’s voice came through the door. “You guys do realise we can still hear everything you’re saying right?”
Max and El started laughing and Y/N had to join in.
“Conspiring.” Mike whispered to the boys. “I told you they’re conspiring.”
Someone loudly knocked on the door.
“Not now mom!” Mike screamed.
“Mike, open the door!” Nancy shouted back.
Mike ran up the stairs and flung the door open to reveal Nancy and Jonathan. They moved past him and descended the stairs as Mike shut and locked the door again.
Y/N got straight to her feet and threw her arms around them both. They both took one look at the state of her and quickly returned the gesture. They pulled back with a shocked look.
“What happened to you?” Nancy said, her eyes going wide as they bounced from her cast to her head to her throat.
“I was in a car accident caused by the mind flayer and now Billy’s possessed and then he tried to kill us because we locked him in a sauna and now we don’t know where he is and Hopper and Joyce are apparently walking to Illinois and I can’t find Steve anywhere.” Y/N knew she was rambling but she it was just the relief of finally seeing them both. “Where the hell have you both been? I’ve been looking for you for two days.”
Nancy and Jonathan just looked at her with wide eyes before looking to the five kids behind them.
“We’ve seen it too.” Nancy said before she launched into a full explanation about rats eating fertiliser and an old woman doing the same and being taken to hospital. “It was the same thing, the exact same thing that happened to Will last year. And look at this, look at the body temperature.” Nancy handed Y/N a medical sheet.
“Did you steal this?” Y/N asked as she took a look at the scarily low numbers on the sheet before handing it to the kids.
“He likes it cold.” Will said.
“Okay,” Mike started. “so, this crazy old woman who was eating fertiliser,”
“Mrs Driscoll.” Nancy interjected.
“Right, yeah, Mrs Driscoll, what time was this attack?”
“Last night.”
“Right, but what time last night?”
“Around 9.”
“You waited all night to call?” Jonathan suddenly butted in.
“I-I was waiting for the doctors to run some tests.” Nancy said. Y/N glanced between the pair, it looked like Mike and El weren’t the only ones having relationship issues.
“You weren’t there?” Will sounded personally offended.
Jonathan threw his hands up in surrender. “Well, I’m here now, aren’t I?”
“Hallelujah.” Nancy rolled her eyes.
Everyone else shared an awkward glance as Lucas muttered a soft “oooh”.
“Um, so, wha-what time was your… sauna test?” Nancy said ignoring the awkwardness and getting back to the real issue.
“Around 9.” The five kids and Y/N said at the same time.
“Well that proves it. That proves my theory.” Nancy seemed pleased with herself.
“She’s flayed, just like Billy.” Mike said.
“Flayed?” Jonathan raised an eyebrow.
“The mind flayer, he flays people. Takes over their mind. Once they do that, they basically become him.” Mike explained.
“If there are two flayed-” Lucas started.
“We have to assume there are more.” Will finished.
“The other people on the road.” Y/N suddenly realised.
Everyone turned to look at her as Nancy spoke up. “What?”
“After we crashed, Billy started yelling at something in the middle of the road, but there was nothing there. So, I walked up to him and as I got close, he said ‘to build what’. I took his hand to try and get him back in the car and we weren’t alone anymore.”
“What do you mean?” Jonathan asked.
“Everything flickered and got dark and there was another Billy standing across from us with all these people behind him.”
“Okay, but I still don’t get it.” Nancy said.
“The other Billy answered Billy’s question. He said ‘what you see’. He wants to build an army of flayed for something.” As Y/N finished the room got very quiet.
“Heather.” El broke the silence, her eyes going wide. “Billy was doing something to her. She was scared. She was screaming. Bad screams.”
“What’s a good scream?” Lucas seemed genuinely curious.
“Max said-”
“Doesn’t matter.” Max quickly interjected with an embarrassed look to Y/N. Who just looked as puzzled as Lucas.
“I’m sorry, I’m lost, who is Heather?” Nancy asked.
“Heather Holloway.” Y/N answered. “She works with Billy at the pool.”
Nancy and Jonathan’s eyes got wide as they spoke together. “Tom.”

It’s a Gift
Summary:  Cas and Dean have become very close. Dean develops a crush and is afraid to say anything. He continues to fall harder as the days go on. As the Valentine's Day party approaches, Dean wonders if he'll share the secret he's been harboring.
Ships: Dean/Cas, Crobby
Word Count:  3,552
TW: Mentions of violence and Homophobia, Swearing
Notes:  This is a work from an abandoned Valentine's Day group writing project. I decided to post it still because I worked hard on it and I wanted the original intended recipient to get their fic as planned. I want to thank Luc for allowing me to reach out to them and @kermit-drinking-tea-dot-jpg for betaing this fic.
Link to read on AO3
The smell of greasy tater tots and dry nuggets wafted through the cafeteria as I walked in and took my seat at the table. The rest of the team sat down as well.
"Does anyone have a date for Valentine's party tomorrow?" Garth asked.
"I'm sure Sam will be my date," Gabe smirked. The guy was kinda obsessed with my brother.
Garth rolled his eyes and continued to take a bite of his chicken patty. I turned the page of my notebook, trying to decode my notes from last week.
"Shit," I mumbled under my breath.
"What?" Gabe asked with a mouth full of french fries.
"I can't read my notes, and the test is next period," I said in frustration. I had scrawled them down distractedly during the class.
"Would you like to borrow mine?" Cas asked.
Of course, I would like to borrow Cas's notes. He was a great student, always crazy organized.
Cas slid a spiral-bound notebook with perfect notes written in blue gel pen. The lettering looked like a font. I could never be like this. I could never sit still for that long. Oh, to be like Cas; Quarterback, Captain of the Football team, debate mentor, NHS, he really had it all. I was just a linebacker struggling to remember physics. God, Dad, is gonna kill me.
"Thanks, man," There was relief in my voice. Maybe I'd pass. A.P. Physics is not the move when you're a dumbass.
Cas smiled and picked up his book, On the Road. I've never seen him eat during school. He's always reading, helping us with homework, or keeping Gabe and Garth out of trouble.
The bell rang, so I handed Cas his notebook back. He winked, and I felt my heart pound. I'm sure he was just saying ‘you're welcome’.
* * *
Mr. Crowley handed out the test, and I inhaled deeply. I can't do this. I can't do this.
Cas looked toward me and mouthed, "Are you ok?"
I shook my head. The little shit winked again and raised his hand.
"Mr. Crowley, I think Dean is going to be ill," Cas fibbed, "I should take him to the nurse just to be sure."
"We wouldn't want that. Take him to the nurse," Mr. Crowley gave him the ok.
Cas and I walked out of the classroom and into the hallway. Cas gestured to me to follow him. He led me into an empty classroom and shut the door.
He set his notebook and pencil down on a desk and bluntly said, "Sit."
I did as I was told. I watched him write a kinematic equation on a fresh sheet.
"What do you know?" Cas asked.
"Nothing."
"I don't believe that."
"I'm a dumbass," I shrugged.
He tilted his head, and I noticed a change in his eyes.
"You don't believe you deserved to be helped," He stated and quickly changed the subject in an attempt to take what he said back. "Let's start easy."
I leaned my head over to see the problem he wrote. A hair fell on my face, and Cas pushed it away. I jumped. Cas jumped as well, startled by my reaction. His disposition changed.
"I'm sorry, I…" His voice trailed off.
"It's fine, Cas." I made an attempt to reassure him.
We moved along with the problem like it never happened. But it did happen. I would feel the touch on my forehead the rest of the day. The way his hand felt, soft and warm against my rough skin.
We must have done at least 20 problems until I finally felt comfortable doing it independently. The bell rang, and I thanked Cas. He really didn't need to do that. I wasn't shocked that he did though, he always tried to help the guys somehow. The dude's a friggin angel.
* * *
I was distracted all of the football practice.  I was preoccupied thinking about Cas.
"Winchester, get your head in the game!" Coach Bobby yelled out.
I had known Bobby my whole life. He'd been more like a dad than my own blood. He was always there when Dad was deployed, on a hunting trip, or just drunk, unable to take care of Sam and me. Dad was never the most stable person.
I nodded to Bobby and tried to focus. I'd been meaning to talk to the school counselor about getting me to see a therapist or something to get diagnosed. Bobby and I suspected I had ADHD but we wouldn't know for sure. Unfortunately, I knew that Dad didn't believe in therapy. And anyway, the doctor can't fix it if I'm distracted by Cas. God, the dude can move. His passes are perfect, he makes almost every goal, and his touchdowns are so impressive. God, I sound like I have a crush.
Practice finished, and we all headed to the locker room. Bobby gave a speech.
"We've got an away game tomorrow, folks. I expect the best behavior from you all, or you will not go to the sports Valentine's Day party. I mean it." Bobby continued, "I know that this year has been hard with the Superbowl being delayed due to extenuating circumstances, but I still need you idjits to be good."
"Yes, coach," We deadpanned in unison like cult members. We started exiting the locker room.
"Dean, I would like you to stay," Coach said sternly.
Oh shit.
Bobby led me to his office and motioned for me to sit in a chair.
"What's up with you, son?" Bobby questioned, "You've got that look, is it a girl? You're not back with Jo, are you? Lisa? Or is it a guy or an enby? You know that I don't care…"
"No, it's no one," I'm such a liar. I've had a crush on Cas since he moved here in fourth grade, and Bobby can see right through my bullshit.
"Bull," Bobby raised his eyebrows.
I shrugged. I couldn't even imagine what dad would say. Actually, I could. It would be to get out of his house and never come back.
"So that's it, you just wanted to be nosey? Besides, it's no one, and dad would never let me." I sighed.
"Don't worry about your old man. I'd take care of it. Mr. King and I always have a place for you and Sam anyway." Bobby was dating Mr. Crowley, no one but Sam and I knew.
I thanked him and left to go pick up Sam from the middle school. Boy, he had grown up so fast. I remembered when he was born. And when mom died.
* * *
I pulled up at the school, music blaring. Sam rushed to my car and opened the door.
"Can you drive me to Jess's house?" Sam asked.
"No, tonight's family dinner night." Dad's A.A. sponsor told him that it was a good idea to start trying to be more of a part of our lives. That started with dinner, I guess.
* * *
Dinner with Dad was painful. Sam and Dad bickered back and forth about every single little thing. Sam wanted to go to college, Dad wanted him to keep up with the family business, then Sam said that hunting and the military don't count as a legacy. I hate it here.
"Sam, give it a rest." I dropped my fork into Cambell's chicken noodle with stars.
"You're not siding with him, are you?" Sam's face was defensive.
"I'm the adult here." Dad slurred.
"A half of one at best," I muttered under my breath.
"What was that, boy?" Dad's face had that look I didn't like.
"Nothing, sir," I was trying not to get killed.
Creak. Dad slid his chair back and walked over to me. As he hovered over my head, my heart dropped to my stomach. He held his hand out and swung.
I could feel the tingling on my face as he said, "Say something else, and it's gonna be somewhere else."
Sam got up from the table and ran to his room. I hated when Sam saw this. I knew it would hurt him more, but I still spoke anyway. It's hard. I knew Dad loved us. He just didn't know how to express it.
I walked away from the table as Dad drank more beer.
"Sam, you know that…" I couldn't think of an excuse, so I said, "Open the door, please."
Sam opened the door. His eyes were red, stress hives had formed on his arm. I wanted to hold him and tell him I would get us out here. I tried to protect him. I wanted him to always be safe. I just wish he knew Dad before Mom died.
"Why?" Sam asked, "Why do you just sit there and take it."
So he won't come after you, I wanted to say. Instead, I just shrugged as he closed the door in frustration.
* * *
I woke up early to go on a run to clear my head. As I ran, I saw a familiar face. It was Cas, walking a fluffy golden retriever. There was a redheaded girl next to him. I didn't know her, but she was pretty. I stopped jogging and stared for a moment.
"Hey!" I waved.
"Oh hey, Dean!" Cas's face brightened. He turned to the girl, "Anna, this is Dean Winchester."
Anna threw up a hand shyly. I smiled in response.
"Catch you later, I guess," I said as I walked away.
It was nice to see Cas, and he looked happy to see me. His sister was nice as well. I thought of the interaction as I strolled to the abandoned house on the end of the street. Sam always asked why I liked that place so much, but I don't know why. I just like creepy things. The house feels almost supernatural.
* * *
"Hey!" Someone hit me in the back. Jo.
"Hay is for horses," Jo grinned. "Got a date for the party?"
I shook my head. I was planning on asking Lisa but Jo was a fun party person. This could pose an issue, but I decided to ignore it.
"Well, you do now, silly goose," Jo said snarkily.
I always took Jo to parties. She was indeed the life of them. We'd go, she'd flirt, I'd scope out the crowd, we'd both be disappointed, then drunkenly make out in the Impala. Maybe grab a milkshake. It was tradition, but I had never taken Lisa before. Jo and I were more like flirty friends; I really had something with Lisa.
"Same as always?" I asked.
"Yup, come get me at five, and I'll bring the refreshments." She was referring to the whiskey she would steal from her mom's bar.
Jo walked away, and I turned to see Lisa standing at her locker. She was grabbing a math textbook and a copy of Gatsby.
"Hey Lis," I started.
"What do you want, Dean," She seemed annoyed.
"Are you ok?"
"I thought you've been ignoring me," Her voice had little emotion.
"I'm sorry, I just didn't realize how distant I was," Now was not the best time. I decided to say nothing about the party.
"Also, I'm not going to the party. My mom is making me watch my sister." Lisa was disappointed.
"Aw man," Score. This would work out.
We departed from the hallway, and I went to class.
* * *
School could not end fast enough. I couldn't wait for the game.
"Winchester, come see me," Mr. Crowley ordered me to his desk.
I hesitantly got up. He seemed pleased. I could not think of what this could possibly be about.
"Dean, your make-up test is perfect," His voice was enthusiastic. "I'm very proud."
Wow. I could not believe this. I thought for sure that I had flunked. As I breezed by, Cas gave me a thumbs up. I would have to thank him later.
* * *
The rest of the day flew by like cake.
The team gathered in the locker room before entering the busses. Coach Bobby gave us one last speech.
"Alright, boys, remember what I said yesterday. Be polite and respectful but kick butt," The team cheered as soon as he said it.
We filled into the bus like sardines. This would be unpleasant on the ride home. I made sure I sat next to Cas to talk about science.
"Hey man, thank you so much," I patted his shoulder.
"Of course," He didn't even look up from his book.
"What's it about" I pointed to On the Road.
"Oh, it's not your kind of book. You wouldn't like it," Cas muttered assertively.
"I'm sure I would"
"When I finish, I'll let you borrow it," Cas clearly was uncomfortable.
"Ok," I decided not to press.
We sat in awkward silence. It was painful. I tried not to stare while he read his book, but he's all I wanted to pay attention to. I noticed the way his eyes glowed, the way his lip curled when he read something funny, the way he brushed his fringe away from his face.
"Dean...Dean...Dean," I finally noticed that Cas was talking to me.
"Huh?" Shit.
"You're staring,"
"You're a pretty picture," I tried to laugh it off, and I guess it worked because he smiled.
He titled his head in surprise at the comment, but he didn't say anything about it, just turned to his book again. I stared more this time, making it very obvious. He looked up again and grinned. This time, I scooted closer. Now, we were only inches apart. Without looking up, he put his head on my shoulder and continued reading. His hair was soft against my cheek. His arm fit perfectly next to mine. I felt so warm and fuzzy. I never had this feeling before.
* * *
"Hut, hut, 67," Bobby was yelling out commands, "Let's go, boys!"
The bright lights lit up the dark field. It was the fourth quarter, and things were looking good. Tried to keep my head in the game as I made a pass to Cas. Cas fumbled the ball, and another player tackled him.
"What are you doing, Novak?" Bobby yelled. Fumbles were out of character for Cas.
I noticed that the opponent was on top of Cas. This was more malicious than just a tackle.
"Hey!" Gabe tried to break them up but got lost in the mix.
Finally, a ref noticed and threw up a flag, "Fifteen-yard penalty!"
Cas stumbled up, his lip was bleeding, and a bruise formed around his eye. We cleared the field to regroup. Cas would most-likely be evaluated, and that player, Azazel, would be suspended. Bobby took Cas to the medical station and, after, walked to the refs and the other coach. You could see them conversing. Bobby's face was solemn.
"So, after talking to the other coach and the refs, we've decided to end this game. The behavior was unacceptable, and we want to prevent any other incidents from happening." Bob said, disappointingly.
"Ugh, I want to kill this kid!" Gabe yelled. His face was red hot.
"Exactly," Cas spoke up from the bench. No one even noticed that he walked over. "This is what we want to prevent."
Gabe crossed his arms. He's quite the drama queen.
Bobby told us to gather our stuff and meet him outside to get on the bus. Most of the team was able to grab their belongings quickly. I was about to leave the locker room when I heard someone grunt. They sounded frustrated.
"Dean! Are you still in here?" Cas called out.
"Um...yeah? Why?"
Cas walked out from behind a row of lockers, shirtless. I tried to contain myself, but the sweat against his skin, the ruffled wet hair, the smile, he looked hot. I must say.
He looked defeated, "I can't find my bag."
I nodded, and Cas continued, "Can you tell Coach Singer that I'll be late? I need to find my bag."
I ran to Bobby, "Cas can't find his bag. I'm gonna stay and help him. I'll call for you to pick me up later."
"Sounds good, kiddo," Bobby gave me two thumbs up.
I ran back to Cas just to find him with his head between his knees on a bench. I didn't know what to do, so I just placed my hand on his back and left it there.
The room smelled of old sweat and mud. The smell was so overwhelming, I don't know how I didn't notice it earlier. There are lots of things I haven't seen, I start to think about what I've actually paid attention to.
"Cas?" I question. "Are you ok?"
He shook his head. He didn't even move from his position, so I got up to look around. The lockers didn't have locks, so I opened all of them. Nothing. I checked under benches, in stalls; I even looked by the toilets.
"Man, I can't find it," I sighed.
Seconds after I said those words, the lights went out, and I heard the twist of a key.
"Damnit!" I'd never heard Cas curse before, "What are we gonna do?"
"Cas, I don't know," I said as I tried to think.
I opened my phone to see that it was dead. I couldn't use the flashlight, and if Cas didn't have his bag, he didn't have his phone with him. Thankfully, I had a charger in my pocket, but it would take at least an hour for my Motorola to charge. Damn, that phone takes forever.
"We're gonna miss the party, and it's all my fault," Cas started sobbing.
"No, don't cry," I don't do well with tears. I sat back down on the bench.
"Dean…" Cas scooted away from me.
"What?" I moved closer so I could hear him through the sobs.
Cas turned and kissed me. His soft lips against mine felt like heaven on a platter. He ran his hands through my hair as he swung his legs over onto my lap. I lay down on my back as he leaned into me. I began kissing back but still letting him lead. This is what I wanted. I've been yearning for this. He moves from my lips to my neck, and I run my hands across his muscles.
"Dean?"
"Cas?"
"God, I love it when you say my name," He says as he undresses me faster.
* * *
After we finish, I check my phone to see if it is charged. The time says 7:15. It's only been an hour since the game ended, so we're not too late.
"So what do we do now?" Cas was lying on the bench, looking at the ceiling.
"Call Bobby to pick us up, I guess?" I ran out of solutions, "I think someone stole it."
"You're probably right, but how do we get out of here?" Cas questioned.
I did not think about that. We were in a locked locker room after school hours with no way of getting out or seeing.
It took me a moment, but I came up with a solution. There's a window high up in the back, so I slid another bench towards it so I could reach it. I flicked the lock on the window, and it budged. It was a small window, but I could climb up and slide my torso through without issue.
"Cas!" I yelled as I slid downwards out of the window, back into the locker room.
"What?"
"I found a solution."
* * *
Bobby arrived quickly to pick up a poor freezing shirtless Cas and me.
"No bag?" Bobby questioned.
We shrugged and told him we couldn't find it. Bobby said that we were never playing this school again. Cas and I were content with that. I looked over to Cas and smiled. He smiled back and giggled. I held out my hand, and he took it. I felt the warm sensation through my body again as he touched me.
"What's up with you guys?" Bobby asked.
"Nothing," I smiled but quickly pulled my hand away from Cas. I wasn't ready to tell Bobby yet.
* * *
We arrived at Valentine's party, and Jo was the first to greet me.
"Did you forget about me?" Jo wrinkled her nose in annoyance.
"Sorry, I was looking for Cas's bag." I'm not lying.
"Well, I found another date." Jo turned to a girl, Lisa.
"Hey Dean," Lisa waved and pointed to a redhead, "Meet Charlie!"
"Hi! I'm Jo's girlfriend!" Charlie stuck out her hand enthusiastically.
I laughed—what a wild night. I strolled over to the drink table and grabbed some punch. Cas found me through the crowd. He was shy now.
"Dean? Are we going to talk about this?" Cas insisted.
"Sure."
"I like you."
"I get that." I wondered what the problem was.
"And?" Cas seemed unsure.
I moved closer to Cas and hugged him.
Cas told me that Gabe had grabbed his bag from the locker room because he knew that Cas was hurt. Gabe was goofy but kind at heart. Cas was thankful that he did, and no one stole it.
That reminded me that I had something to give Cas. I opened my bag and handed Cas a mixtape with some Zeppelin favorites.
"Dean, I can't take this," Cas was in awe.
"It's a gift; you keep those." I smiled and took his hand to dance.

i’ve got the touch placebo
elu au / 5.2k words
“You don’t remember a lot of things.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Lucas’ voice cracks slightly when he asks, those oceans looking like high tide. Eliott’s heart drops to his stomach at the question. Does he tell him, or does he keep that kiss locked away as the secret they didn’t know they were keeping?
or: Lucas kissed Eliott after a few too many one night; three times Eliott almost brings it up, and the one time he does.
:readmore:
It all started by accident, really. Eliott falling for Lucas, that is. He’s always had a little crush on his best friend, but one night changed everything.
It all started when Lucas kissed him. But, you see, that’s the problem - that was months ago. Lucas kissed him, and absolutely nothing was different between them. Eliott doesn’t know if Lucas just regrets it and pretends it didn’t happen, or if he’s waiting for Eliott to bring it up, or worse: he doesn’t remember.
Sure, Lucas may have had a few too many that night, but was it really enough to make him forget? Enough to have absolutely no memory of something that completely turned Eliott’s world upside down?
If a drunken kiss was all it really was, Eliott doesn’t know what to do. But if it was more, he wouldn’t know the first thing either.
Sometimes Eliott thinks he’s got enough love for the both of them, and perhaps that is enough. Or at least he’s trying to convince himself that it is.
*
Eliott is perched on the edge of Emma’s balcony where he slipped out of the party going on inside, opting for some fresh air and a smoke. The gang and the girls are celebrating the end of terminale and Eliott comes to join the fun even though he has another uni exam before he’s finally free. It’s a warm summer night and a slight breeze offers some relief from the muggy air and crowded apartment. The moon keeps him company until he’s joined by another warm body in search of his.
Lucas nearly trips over the lip of the balcony door and giggles at his own misstep. Eliott tries his best not to laugh, but a small chuckle escapes, earning him a retort from the other boy.
“Hey! Are you laughing at me?” Lucas asks after he tips back the rest of the bottle of vodka he’s holding, his voice higher than normal and cracking towards the end. It’s way too endearing for Eliott that he smiles around the rolled paper between his lips.
He doesn’t respond, and next thing he knows, Lucas lunges forward and snatches the joint right out of his hand in retaliation. Eliott looks at him in disbelief and Lucas has a devilish grin on his face, again way too endearing to be taken seriously.
Lucas tilts his chin and chest out with pride and brings the joint to his lips. He takes a long hit, breathing in deep and feeling the strength of the weed. He coughs and hands the joint back to its owner as he recovers.
“That is good shit, fuck,” Lucas adds when he regains his breath. “And expensive, I bet.”
Eliott does one of his signature shrugs. “I know a guy” is all he says to that.
Lucas scoffs at his smug reply and comes to join him on the edge of the balcony. He sits on the ledge with his back against the wall and hugs his legs close to his chest. Eliott’s heart skips a beat at how small he looks.
Lucas unwraps his arms and reaches one out to Eliott, a gap between his first and second fingers in a silent plea for the joint again. Eliott obliges and transfers it to him, hands touching for a fleeting moment - the weed is nothing in comparison to the high he gets from moments like this.
There’s a wrinkle in Lucas’ brow when he notices something. The joint in his hand points to Eliott’s, specifically a faint smudge of black on his right hand.
“Otteli strikes again?” Lucas is amused at himself and Eliott tries not to indulge him. “I’m best friends with a famous urbex artist, I might have to use that as a pick up line someday.”
The words cut deep coming from him. Sometimes Eliott forgets about his enormous crush on his best friend because everything is so easy with them, but other times - like this - it’s hard to forget. Eliott hides behind the smoke, hoping his face doesn’t give him away.
“I‘m not sure how effective that will be, but...” he raises his hands in acquiescence.
“Of course it will work!” Lucas’ voice is wet and nasaly and still fucking adorable. “I mean, you’re basically the French Banksy.”
“I wish,” Eliott laughs. “They’re rich and not just tagging places with their spirit animal.” He picks at his cuticles and stares at the remnants of spray paint on his skin, suddenly insecure and words sounding more bitter than he planned.
Something changes on Lucas’ face. “Your tag is fucking cool!” His face goes back to before, features softened by the weed and alcohol aglow in the city lights and embers of the joint.
Eliott’s heart keeps skipping a beat at every compliment, but especially at the adorable declaration of the love of his silly signature raccoon tag.
“And need I remind you that you’re rich? I mean,” Lucas pinches the joint between his thumb and forefinger, raising it to prove his point.
Lucas hops down from the ledge and stumbles a bit; he finds the vodka bottle again and frowns when he realizes he already emptied it.
“I may need to marry rich, what with the way my bac went, to be honest.” Lucas is walking across the balcony, bringing the heel of one shoe in front of the toes of the other, wobbling with each step.
He looks extremely focused even though his movements are lazy and slow. And suddenly he gasps as a lightbulb goes off in his head, face lighting up -  both Lucas and Eliott’s. “I know! I’ll just marry you if it doesn’t work out. There, problem solved.”
And no amount of warning could prepare Eliott for a sentence like that coming out of Lucas’ mouth. This time his heart drops straight down to the street two stories below.
Lucas nearly faceplants when he steps on his own shoelace, but Eliott slides off the ledge in time to catch him before he falls. They lock eyes for what feels like the first and only time ever; Lucas’ intense, big, blue doe eyes meeting his and quite literally steal his breath away.
Lucas retreats from their embrace for another hit, the joint burning shorter and shorter.
Eliott sputters, trying to think of a way to change the subject before he melts into a puddle. “We won’t be getting married if you keep smoking all of my weed,” he tries as a comeback.
Lucas looks up at him like a deer in headlights or a kid caught with a hand in the cookie jar. He looks down at the joint that has about one hit left in it, then that devilish look grows on his face once again.
Eliott swears that time stops just for them as he watches every move Lucas makes like it’s at half speed. The joint is closed between Lucas’ bitten lips, and suddenly Eliott feels the smoke in his lungs when the other boy leans forward and presses their lips together.
It’s so sudden and unexpected that it makes Eliott’s mouth open wider in a gasp, and Lucas takes it as an invitation to test the waters. He slips a tongue into Eliott’s open mouth, and Eliott thinks he is in both heaven and hell.
Eliott instinctively reciprocates the kiss until he gets a grip and tastes the alcohol on Lucas’ tongue, reminding him of the fact that Lucas is not sober enough to warrant this. He pulls back, cheeks flushed, but Lucas looks unaffected - like nothing earth-shattering just happened.
Eliott’s phone rings in his pocket; turns out Idriss left his keys at the apartment and needs Eliott to let him in.
Lucas notices the interruption and, with a gravelly voice, says, “Sorry about the weed,” before stepping inside, tripping on the threshold again.
Eliott stares at the moon high in the sky who was witness to his entire world being flipped upside down. He takes a deep breath and walks down the stairs to retrieve his heart from the ground.
1.
Eliott is sitting on the dock of the lake with his feet dipping into the crystal blue water below, weight held up by his arms outstretched behind him. The remaining droplets on his tanning skin quickly evaporate into the warm summer air, leaving a cool sensation in their wake.
There’s some shouting and splashing from the far side of the lake where Basile, Arthur, and Yann are jumping off the neighbor’s dock and trampoline. Eliott had his fun with them earlier and went for a cooldown on his own while he watched the guys perform backflip after backflip.
The usual suspects have all traveled to Arthur’s beach house to kick off the gang’s last summer before they go separate ways for university. The girls are here too; they went inside to fix dinner for everyone while the boys spent the sun’s dying hours out on the water.
Lucas is swimming his way back over to Arthur’s dock and Eliott sits up in anticipation of his return.
It’s been a total of 72 hours since the night of the party. The night that the love of Eliott’s life and best friend of over 10 years had kissed him. Not so accidentally, but also not quite on purpose.
He hadn’t even had a full conversation with Lucas since that night - the day after the other boy had the world’s worst hangover, the next Eliott was taking his last final exam of the semester, and then they were at the lake. Lucas had fallen asleep against the window for most of the car ride and every other waking moment was full of Basile’s ill-timed jokes and Emma’s ramblings over her recent Tinder dates.
In other words, there was no appropriate time or place to bring up the situation. No opportunity to ask, hey, remember when you kissed me haha? And Eliott didn’t want to say it like that, so nonchalant and in sing-song with a poke to the ribs. Because it meant something to him, more than he ever thought a drunken kiss could, and because it would kill him to make Lucas think that it meant anything less.
It’s like that night Lucas gave him this enormous heavy feeling but in a physical form - held it in his hands and said here, hold this and left, but not without Eliott’s heart. And Eliott was left holding on to it, this thing he couldn’t quite find the word or feeling for, and a hole where his heart should be. And it’s softened now, melted, turned to liquid and still losing shape. And with every glance and hidden smile more and more slips from his hands.
Eliott is violently brought back to his senses when everything in his vision is darkened by the shadow of Lucas climbing up the ladder of the dock and blocking the setting sun. Eliott’s eyes involuntarily rake down the boy before him, all sun-soaked skin and water dripping from every pore. He catches himself after a second too long, obvious even under the sunglasses he has on. He tilts his head back up to Lucas standing at the edge of the dock - taller than him for once - and the sight makes Eliott’s insides shift.
Eliott’s eyes adjust to the lack of direct sunlight, squinting up at him. He watches as Lucas brings both of his hands through his wet locks, putting his skin on display as the water that Eliott swam in returns to the air, reflecting what’s left of the day’s rays as they go. Eliott feels a shiver run down his spine - be it at the sight in front of him or the now dry surface of his own skin.
“You coming?”
Before he realizes, there’s a hand being offered to him. Eliott’s brain is a few steps behind and he takes the hand when it catches up. Lucas pulls him up and he’s back to being the taller one, although he still feels at Lucas’ mercy.
Lucas leads the way back to the house, leaving wet footprints on the dock and concrete of the patio. Eliott follows and uses the prints as relief from the scorching surface. Lucas grabs the towel hanging on the patio chair, rubs it into his wet hair, then lets the damp material hang around his neck.
And there it is, finally: a moment where he could bring it up. A chance to give back the heavy, shifting feeling he’s been holding since. Ask him if he remembers, if he meant it, if he regrets it. The shapeless thing he carries starts to move again, starts to form into something akin to the shape he was given. He can give it back.
Eliott stands there looking at Lucas, eyes flicking down to the lips he can’t stop thinking about on his own. They’re red and chapped now, a product of sun and salt. He holds in a breath and forces his eyes up to Lucas’, which are darting around the patio looking for something.
The moment is there and then it’s gone - and the thing starts to slip yet again, just as the water had off of Lucas’ back.
“Hey, did you bring any chapstick, by chance?” Lucas asks when he can’t find what he’s looking for.
That’s another thing that happens sometimes: Eliott thinks about something and the next minute Lucas brings it up, or vise versa. Like noticing his chapped lips conjured Lucas to search for relief.
“Uh, yeah.” Eliott walks over to the bedroom he and Lucas and Arthur share through the back door and returns with it.
He hands it over to Lucas; the gesture feels strangely intimate given the context of Eliott’s feelings toward him, the context that their lips have touched now. It feels coded with something more than a favor for a friend, and hurts more than it should.
“Thanks,” Lucas says before removing the cap and pushing the balm onto the split skin.
Eliott can imagine the minty balm stinging the cracks in the other boy’s lips and swears he can feel the same tingly sensation on his own, even without having used it all day.
It’s entirely innocent, but it gets Eliott’s heartbeat to quicken at the thought of using the chapstick after him. It doesn’t have to mean anything - Lucas borrowing his chapstick - but it does. It’s as if the tube of balm is a placebo for the real thing - having his lips pressed to Lucas’ again - but still just as effective.
And technically another moment presents itself: the topic of lips, specifically both of theirs, sharing something like the lip balm.
Think, Eliott, think. He could casually comment on the party, ask how bad the hangover was, anything to get the ball rolling. But the second Lucas returns his gaze and places the tube in his hands again, all rational thought leaves his mind at once.
The silence is starting to grow uncomfortable until Lucas breaks it.
“How was your exam, by the way?” He shoves some hair behind his ear and rubs his lips together to spread the product.
“Uh, it was fine,” Eliott answers, watching the movement. Something blooms in his chest at Lucas asking about it, the genuine curiosity present on his golden face.
Say something, anything about the party.
He gets an idea.
“You know—” He stops when Lucas puts the towel back on the chair to dry. The remaining sunlight hits just right, the balm on his lips shiny and intoxicating. Eliott swallows and starts again. “You know, if college doesn’t work out I could always marr—”
“Lucas, there you are!” Arthur shouts as the trio come walking through the patio to get inside.
The look on the younger boy’s face turns bright at the sight of his friends, high points of his cheeks dusted pink with sun and stars sprinkled on his nose in the form of freckles. Yann shoves his shoulder and the skin turns white before returning to the pinkish tan. The skin is soon covered in cotton when Lucas shrugs his shirt on.
Lucas bites the corner of his bottom lip and gives Eliott a glance over his shoulder when he follows the guys inside - a glance that could be saying something, but Eliott’s not sure what.
Eliott makes his way to the kitchen and pours some drinks and thanks the girls for preparing the meal. Everyone sits around the counter and some at the table nearby; Lucas takes the seat across from him.
There’s chatter between the girls and the gang that Eliott feels slightly disconnected from, but he focuses on filling his empty stomach with food.
“Eli, what were you going to say, outside?” Lucas inquires, not in a whisper but not loud enough to draw attention towards them.
And there’s another moment, right there for the taking. Lucas literally asks about it - possibly without even intending to.
Lucas looks at him while taking another bite then puts his fork down to take his napkin and wipe the pasta sauce - and chapstick - off his mouth.
Eliott’s chest feels tight again, the heavy feeling still there but no longer physically. No way he can hold it and give it back now. The moment is gone like the sun for the day, only leaving what it has touched behind.
The placebo burns a hole in the pocket of his boardshorts. “It was nothing.”
2.
Eliott hates drinking. He’s not a fan of the taste of beer, wine is okay only if it’s expensive, and liquor is gross unless mixed with so much sugar that makes the hangover even worse than straight alcohol.
He finds himself in a gay bar with Lucas celebrating Mika’s half-birthday because Mika decided that ‘6 months is too long’ to celebrate.
It has now been two months since the kiss and neither of them have said a word about it. The unnamed thing Lucas dropped into his hands has vanished, no way of returning it to its owner. Every day is harder to pretend and even harder to speak up.
The birthday boy is already on his way to being wasted living it up on the dance floor and Eliott sits next to Lucas at the bar. Lucas is on his second beer and Eliott has a melting vodka tonic in front of him. The DJ takes a short break and the music changes to quieter radio jams through the house speakers instead of the mixing table.
“So?” Lucas asks behind his beer bottle, tilting his chin in the direction of a handsome guy across the bar. “Aren’t you gonna go over there and talk to him?”
Eliott looks at the sweaty glass on the countertop and quickly glances over to the him Lucas refers. He picks up the glass and raises it in the guy’s direction as a thank you and sips the thin black straw. It’s strong but watery and makes his lips pucker.
“Isn’t he the one who’s supposed to make the move?” Eliott answers Lucas’ question with one of his own and flags the bartender for water instead.
Lucas points to the drink. “Well, technically, he already did.” Eliott huffs.
The music picks up again as the DJ puts on another mix, volume even louder than before, or perhaps it’s just loud in comparison to the radio.
Eliott raises his voice and leans into Lucas’ ear. “What if I’m not interested?”
When he pulls back, they share a look similar to the one at Arthur’s lakehouse with the same indescribable meaning. There’s also something different this time in the way Lucas intentionally keeps his gaze.
It’s dark on this side of the club but when the flashing lights hit the side of Lucas’ face he notices the contrast of his crystal eyes and his blown pupils. Eliott thinks if he stares any longer he’ll drown in their oceans.
To stay afloat, Eliott turns back toward the mirrored wall behind the bar and grabs his water to sip. The second the liquid touches his tongue he realizes it’s not the water he reached for, but the vodka soda. He winces in reaction and shoves the glass toward the lip of the counter out of his reach.
He can feel Lucas’ eyes on him and then in the direction of the sender of the drink. Eliott gathers the courage to look again, but he shouldn’t have - the determined scowl of his brow hurts more than the back of his throat when he puts together what Lucas plans to do.
Lucas reaches for the drink at the edge of the bar and brings it to his lips, tongue darting out to catch the thin black straw he closes his lips around, downing as much of the concoction as he can stomach.
Still looking at the guy across the bar, Lucas says, “Then I’ll tell him you say thanks for the drink.”
Eliott’s soul is soaked when he sees the blue of Lucas' glance as he makes his way over to the other end of the bar.
Over the next two hours Eliott nurses his glass of water from his seat and tortures himself by watching Lucas dance dangerously close to the stranger that hit on him with a new drink in hand.
Eliott directs his attention to the glass Lucas emptied when it gets too much to bear. The black straw sits in the glass of ice staring him down and he gets a new urge to drink the remnants of alcohol from it. Perhaps it’s a new prescription of placebo that would work better than the drink itself.
Eliott steps out for a cigarette later, in need of the fresh air more than the smoke in his lungs, but it gives him something to do instead of sulking in a room of dancing strangers.
Lucas comes to find him minutes after, no handsome stranger on his arm.
“Okay. My head hurts so bad I can’t stay a second longer,” he says instead of a greeting, words slurred and movements wobbly.
“Where’s Mika?” Eliott asks, helping him stand up straighter.
Lucas giggles. “He went home with a guy like two hours ago.”
“Oh,” he hadn’t even noticed. “What about the guy and the drink?” Eliott clenches his jaw and looks around expecting him to show up.
Lucas giggles again, and the sound makes Eliott’s heart flutter - it flutters then stops at what he says next.
“Don’t worry, Demaury, no one is coming between our eventual marriage.”
Eliott trips on a bump in the sidewalk and Lucas falls into his side.
And just like that, he’s back at the lake again – the sting of a moment there and gone – and he’s sinking deeper and deeper.
3.
Everything seems to happen by accident ever since the night on the balcony.
Eliott hadn’t even planned on going back to Lucas’ flat, but after the party was shut down prematurely, Lucas asked if he wanted to come inside for another beer. And it’s not like Eliott had the heart to say no. He definitely didn’t plan to stay this late, but he also doesn’t want to leave.
“I thought you said you were going to lay off the weed now that you’re ‘taking your studies seriously.’” Eliott grins as he watches Lucas light the joint hanging from his lips.
“I don’t remember saying that,” says Lucas, leaning his head back on the couch and releasing smoke from his lips.
His pursed lips carve out the hollows of his cheekbones and plants a rather dirty image in Eliott’s mind. The movement also makes his hair bounce a little; it’s messy and fluffy from when he shrugged his hoodie off when they came inside. Eliott has to busy his hands with the frayed edge of his jeans so as to not reach out and touch.
Eliott pivots from his stare and instead laughs at Lucas’ nonchalance and the irony that he said that while high.
Lucas’ eyes stay closed for a moment before slowly blinking them back open. His long lashes fan over his cheeks like that of a renaissance painting as he’s bathed in a muted golden light from the kitchen. The eyes underneath them look tired, probably due to the lack of sleep that comes with the first year of university Eliott knows too well. The oceans of blue aren’t any less breathtaking, though; Eliott has to look away before he drowns in them once again.
Eliott takes a sip from the plastic cup he filled with water once it was empty of beer. He feels his heart shift and twists in his chest like it does when he looks at Lucas too long, performing a somersault when he feels the ghost of those lips on his.
Eliott’s words just slip out, his mumbling echoes in the plastic pressed to his lips. “Yeah, you don’t remember a lot of things.”
It’s almost quiet enough that he could have gotten away with it, but not quite. He can tell he’s been caught by the furrow of Lucas’ brow and the confused tilt of his head - which is way more endearing than it should be.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Lucas’ voice cracks slightly when he asks, those oceans looking like high tide. Eliott’s heart drops to his stomach at the question. Does he tell him, or does he keep that kiss locked away as the secret they didn’t know they were keeping?
Lucas slowly wets his lips and worries one between his teeth in anticipation. It’s like a knife to Eliott’s gut, piercing through his heart where it rests there.
Eliott scrambles for an answer, panicking and lacking the courage to tell the truth. “I mean maybe this is all going to your head.” He makes a vague gesture to the smoke wafting the air between them. Not like he meant anything else.
Lucas takes a page out of his book and gives him a one-shouldered shrug before sitting up and putting out the joint in the ashtray on the coffee table. He takes a moment like he’s trying to decide his next move, then gets up and runs a hand through his hair. God, that hair.
He goes to the kitchen and cleans up, leaving Eliott to sit in the awkward space he left. Eliott takes his phone out of his pocket and checks his notifications, noticing it’s already almost 4am. As in, no buses back to his place at this hour.
“Maybe you’re right. I’m super tired so,” Lucas turns his body in the direction of his bedroom indicating he’s going to turn in.
“Yeah, um,” is all Eliott can find in response, shifting on the couch to settle into a position for sleep.
“Come on, Eliott, I’m not letting you sleep on the couch.”
“No, it’s fine—”
“You’re literally too tall and don’t even fit on that couch. Come on,” Lucas insists, cracking a smile.
And what is he supposed to do, deny him?
So they fall asleep in Lucas’ bed — without bringing up the kiss. Eliott doesn’t know how much longer he can breathe under the pressure.
+1
Eliott startles awake with Lucas too close for comfort; they’re facing each other in the middle of the bed even though there’s plenty of room on either side.
Lucas is wearing an expression he’s never seen before, although he never seems to be able to read him these days. Eliott wants to ask about it, but gets lost in those eyes again, looking tired but somehow refreshed like he’s been awake for a while.
And Lucas does that thing again, bringing up what he’s thinking without fail.
“We’re okay, right?” Lucas asks softly, like the words burn on his tongue as he says them.
Eliott studies his face again, an openness to it that wasn’t there before – like he wants to talk about it seriously this time, no more dancing around.
“Yeah, of course,” he takes a breath and lowers his tone, matching the sincerity of Lucas’, “Why wouldn’t we be?”
Lucas twists his mouth and answers, “I just, I feel like things have been weird between us since Mika’s half-birthday. Is there— did I do something?”
And do something he did - he brought up their wedding talk on the way home and basically confirmed he remembers that night at Emma’s, and maybe the kiss. But Eliott can’t find it in him to ask, but can’t stand not asking any longer.
Lucas looks expectant now, an adorable wrinkle forms on his forehead and those eyes are crystal clear. If it’s his eyes that pull him in, it’s his lips that pull him under.
Eliott removes his hand from under his pillow and slowly raises it near Lucas’ face resting in front of him. Eliott’s gaze is drawn to those lips again, the ones he can’t ever seem to stop thinking about in the phantom touch from months ago. Lucas’ tongue peeks out to wet them followed by teeth trapping one, which makes Eliott sink further.
His hand tenderly brushes Lucas’ rosy cheek and thumb rests near the corner of his mouth, the touch causing Lucas’ breath to hitch and release the pillowy flesh from his teeth.
Eliott quickly looks up at Lucas again, only to find the other boy’s eyes trained on Eliott’s lips now. It’s enough confirmation Eliott needs to do what he’s been wanting to since the day at the lake. And he doesn’t want to swim around it anymore, it’s finally time to reveal the truth.
He delicately strokes his thumb over Lucas’ red bitten bottom lip. “You really don’t remember?”
He doesn’t think he’s ever seen Lucas speechless before, at least not like this. Perhaps absentmindedly Eliott strokes his lips again, and it’s the closest thing to a kiss he’s had since the one on the balcony. It’s too much and not enough, and also the closest placebo to the real thing.
Eliott suddenly gets nervous that Lucas has no idea what he’s talking about, and that the breath caught in the other boy’s throat is not a sign of remembrance but of surprise to the incredibly intimate touch without the context of that night.
He hopes he hasn’t misread Lucas’ mind, for that would be the first time they’ve been on different wavelengths in years. Sure this whole fiasco was push and pull of avoiding the truth, but there was always some unspoken understanding present even so. Eliott feels he’s in too deep and Lucas is just floating, too much darkness and pressure between them.
Eliott retracts his hand like he’s caught flame, silently begging for forgiveness as he meets Lucas’ eyes again.
And this time it’s Eliott who can’t breathe. Lucas inches even closer, eyes flicking back down to Eliott’s lips once more. He whispers hotly in the limited space between their lips. “Make me remember.”
After days and weeks and months of waiting, dying, drowning, Eliott gets his fix as Lucas presses his sinful lips in a kiss – a completely and intentionally purposeful kiss. A kiss that pulls Eliott up so quickly he gets the bends, muscles and bones aching from the speed of his ascent, head and heart feeling lighter than ever.
“Lucas—” Eliott sighs, everything this means dawning on him.
“I know. Me too,” Lucas interrupts before locking Eliott’s lips again.
They indulge in the taste of each other with nothing to hold them down, eager and wanting like all kisses should be. He’ll never have to refill the script for placebo ever again, too busy getting high on the real thing.

The Dragon Egg (Part 1)
This is my (sort of late) entry for the @secrettunnelatla event.
Summary:  Azula’s metal music career put in jeopardy when a careless afterparty leaves her unexpectedly pregnant with Chan’s baby. Meanwhile, Zuko struggles to overcome his addiction as he works to get his own band off the ground.
Content Warnings: Language, Teen Pregnancy, Drug Abuse, Alcohol Abuse, Suicidal Thoughts, and Child Abuse.
It smells heavily of leather, disinfectant, and hand soap. Azula supposes that, that is a good thing. She tries not to twitch too much, but the discomfort is rather intense. More than intense, really. It is a mild, yet white hot pain. She tries to ignore the buzz of the needle and its attempts to remind her of its bite.
“First time?” Seicho asks.
Azula nods.
“You’re telling me that you can get a pair of snake bites, a brow piercing, and stretch your earlobes, but this is too much?”
Azula resists another flinch. “Piercings are quicker. The needle goes in…” she winces, “and then it comes out and it’s over.”
Seicho withdraws the tattoo gun for a shrug, “there’s no art to piercings.”
“Tell that to Mai.”
“She’s your bandmate, right?”
Azula shakes her head. “My brother’s girlfriend. She’s in his band.”
“Aren’t you?”
“I have my own band. We have a better sound and better lyrics.” She grips the edge edge of her chair. This time speaking ill of Zuko’s band isn’t a distraction enough. She isn’t sure why this is so hard for her. Chan and Ruon had gotten their ink without a hitch, and Ruon is a crybaby on a good day.
“Do you need a break?” The artist asks, withdrawing her tattoo gun. The hideous red, plastic cup that she wears as a necklace charm, bobs with the motion. Azula grits her teeth and shakes her head. If Ruon could get it done in one go then she can manage as well. By the end of it she will have a blue and gold scaled dragon curling around her arm and outlined with blue flame and lightning. And if she can manage it, twin dragonflies will shimmer on both of her shoulder blades.
The buzzing resumes and the pricking returns. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt so much as it does sting. And sometimes the stinging subsides for something more like a painful pressure. “Try to relax, it hurts more if you’re tense.” Seicho says.
“This isn’t exactly relaxing.” Azula frowns. The woman has finally finished the outline of the dragon. “And this chair isn’t comfortable either.” She may as well add that she is thirsty and hungry for good measure.
Seicho laughs, “I’ve had criers and fainters and a few boasting badasses, but I’ve never had a complainer.”
Azula frowns.
“If you want you can move to the bed.” She gestures to what looks like a dentist’s chair. “It has more padding and it’ll give your back a rest.”
“Alright.” While she is up she steals a drink from her water bottle. She tries to make herself as comfortable as possible on the bed. She hears the buzz of another tattoo gun on the other side of the parlor before Seicho’s comes to join it. Azula braces herself for more stinging.
“So what kind of music do you play?”
“Disco pop.” She answers flatly. Sehicho has to draw back and wait for her laughter to pass. “We play metalcore. But Chan and Ruon want to experiment with…” it takes all of her soul not to shudder, “surfer rock.” Granted she can respect it as a genre, it isn’t terrible and it would suit the two of them well. But she can’t see herself providing vocals for surf rock and she doesn’t quite fit the aesthetic. At least she has Zirin to back her up on that, and so the band is perfectly divided like that.
“That could be interesting.” Seicho comments.
“Does anything about me indicate that surf rock is a good fit for my talents?”
.oOo.
Seicho looks her client up and down. Azula is an attractive girl, that’s for sure, it is more than a pleasure sitting in her chair--the girl has a reputation for being very particular and picky.
She  studies her for a moment longer; small and slender  with the slightest muscle definition. Her eyes glitter with thick black eyeliner, shot with a line of neon blue. It’s elegantly dramatic against a soft helping of black eyeshadow. Her piercings glint silver in the light when she turns to watch Seicho work. She notices a septum ring as well. Her hair is styled with a neat undercut, someone has artfully worked fiery patterns into the shaved part.
“That’s fair.” Seicho comments at last. She isn’t sure that she should make any other comments on the girl’s appearance, lest she makes a blabbering fool of herself. She supposes that she has a weak spot for piercings and sideshaves. “I don’t think that I caught your band’s name.”
“Blue Talon.” She gestures to the outline of her dragon. She had specifically instructed Seicho to put emphasis on it’s inky talon.
“I’ll have to listen to some of your music.”
Azula nods. “Give yourself a taste of culture.”
She fixes her gaze on the screen of her phone. Seicho catches the name ‘Chan’ at the top of the screen and the words, ‘still up for tonight?’ Seicho brings  her focus back to the tattoo and resumes her work.
It is an underappreciated art, she thinks. A misunderstood one. She doesn’t think that people understand just how brave one needs to be to decorate a person’s body.  Doesn’t think that they see the value in what she does.
Her art has a weight to it, one that her canvases will carry with them forever. Her art comes with a story and her parchment is flesh. Some tales are as simple as a reminder of one impulse decision (perhaps good, perhaps bad) at the end of a wild night, the story of reckless youth and a fun time. While other stories are so deeply personal that even she doesn’t know the meaning behind the picture she has brought to life on the flesh.
The elegance of dragging needles over skin in careful curves and sturdy lines is an art in itself. It takes a steady and loving hand to guide the needle in exactly the right ways. Calligraphy is renowned and loved, it is classy. Seicho doesn’t think that her job is much different than than.
They say that it is a rough and reckless job. They can’t seem to grasp what tedious work it is. The special sort of carefulness that goes into laying ink onto skin. She supposes that they have taken and ran with stories of shady, cheap shops with unsterilized needles and infected basement tattoos done by best friends.
She draws back for a moment to dab some excess ink from Azula’s skin.  “How are you feeling?” She checks in. Her client gives her a simple thumbs up. With it, Seicho continues. The tattoo begins to come to life now, with an enticing shade of deep blue. She takes care to keep it from marring the golden outline of the scales.
As she carefully fills the scales with blue, she finds herself pondering how lovely it would be to have her artwork on the art of someone who has made it big. She hopes that Blue Talon will go far.
Occupied by her phone, Azula seems to be content for the time being. It would seem that the girl isn’t particularly interested in anymore conversation and she doesn’t try to force her into one. They don’t speak again until the final dragonfly has been inked on to the girl’s shoulder. Seicho flicks the tattoo gun off and sets it aside. “I can take a few pictures of the dragonflies for you so you can see them.”
Azula nods, paying only half attention as she inspects the dragon that now curls around her bicep. “It’s good work.” She says at last.
“Thank you.” Seicho smiles. She holds up her phone and the girl glances over it. “Hey!” She shouts as she snatches the phone from her hand. She watches Azula pull up her contacts list and add herself to it.
“We will be in touch.” She presses the phone back into Seicho’s palm.
She never would have thought that it would be so easy to get a rockstar’s phone number. Albeit, this particular rockstar seems to lack either impulse control or social graces. She is inclined to go with the latter.
“Feel free to give me a call if you think that the ink might be infected. Just follow the instructions,” she gestures to the aftercare package, “and that shouldn’t be an issue.”
“Don’t wait by the phone.” Azula inspects her nails. “I have impeccable hygiene.”
Seicho damn near laughs. She has only exchanged a few words with the girl and she has already left quite an impression. Aesthetic aside and phone incident, she is strangely well-mannered, prim and proper. She isn’t exactly the sort Seicho is used to having in her chair.
She gives  her hair a flick, revealing a golden ring bearing the Kasai family emblem. Were it not for that, Seicho would have never guessed that she was the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai. Thee Fire Lord Ozai, vocalist and guitarist of Fire’s Reign.
She doesn’t get the chance to request an autograph or a chance to meet her idol. She hears the shop bell rattle as the rock legend’s daughter shuts the door behind her and makes her way back to her car.
Seicho hopes that her hard work will serve the girl well.

"Vicky hurry up, We gonna be late!" you yelled at victoria from the living room steading in front of the door.
"Heffa im comin, Dont rush beauty!" victoria yelled back. You and her were heading out to go to Dave & Busters with your other bestfriend Tanaka and Nishonoya, then his other friends, that your also friends with which is, Kenma, and your little Red headed baby Hinata. You were glad Tanaka invited you, you needed to get your mind off of Kuroo. And Dave & busters was the perfect place for you to do so.
" Gurl please, you know you cant fix ugly" you snickered and laughed a little at your own joke.
"Whatever Y/N you just jealous. Anyway.. how I look" she said turning around slowly and posed when she was done.
" its cute girl, you look drop dead gorgeous" you said hyping her up a little.
Tumblr media
"Aww thank you, you look good too, as always Hun" she said smiling showing her pearly white teeth which enhanced her beautiful dark skin. complimenting you about you about your outfit.
Tumblr media
" I try, i try...." you said smiling.
"Aight now lets go...we finna be late waiting all day on you" victoria said while walking out the door giggling to herself.
"Now you know it was you taking all day" you said hurrying to close the door and ran after her laughing , she saw you and she just started running too.
"Lets see who can make it to the car first" you say while jogging slightly acting goofy like kids, then into a sprint after you saw victoria ran ahead of you.
///(timeskip)
You and Victoria pulled up to Dave & Busters with the music blasting loud in your car, yall were playing "Bestfriend" by saweetie screaming your lungs out. You pull up into a parking space, turned off the car, got out and made your way into the building whilst victoria was right beside you.
You opened the door, payed to get in, and walked toward the arcade area trying to find your friends.
"Yo Y/N over here" you turned around and saw Tanaka and Nishonoya with big smiles on theirs faces waving you over at the dining area. You smiled and waved back, grabbed victoria by the arm so she can follow you.
" Hey You guys" you and victoria said in sinc while sliding into the booth with hinata and nishonoya and victoria slid in on the other side with kenma and Tanaka.
"Hey! Y/N hey Vicky! glad you guys could make it" Hinata said smiling big with his eyes half way closed.
" yea! me too" Nishonoya said excitedly. kenma glanced up from his nintendo swtich and shyly waved at you and you waved back at him.
" AIght now that were all here, whats the plan" victoria spoke up, excited about playing the games. They usually meet up once a month to go to Dave & busters, to have their competition of which group can win the most tickects and whichever group does win, gets 1,000 dollars per person. The price changes every month.
" Okay so, its basically the same but this time we have 1,000$" Tanaka said eagerly.
"Oh and just in case you guys forgot the rules im gonna to tell you again" hinata said grinning.Everyone nodded their head showing that their listening.
"Okay...
number 1: if one group has more tickets than the other then that group automatically wins the money
number 2:NO CHEATING, such as stealing lost cards on the floor or even asking people for it... none of that
Number 3: You have 1hr to finnish not even a minute after or you will be disqualified
Number 4: Have FUN, Let the games begin''
he yelled excitedly jumping slightly in the booth.
"Aight im on Y/N's team" Victoria said
"Yea i am too"
kenma said lowly but audible enough for people to hear. this was your go to team because yall one 2 times in a row already. You liked Kenma because he was good at playing video games and if you didnt understand how to play a certain game he will show you how without making it hard to understand.
"aight cool, So im with Nisho and hinata" Tanaka said looking over at his group. everyone slid out the booth, hinata got out last and stood in front of your group, puffing up his chest trying to stand tall saying
" YOU guys wont win this one, ill make sure of it, ive been practicing" He said with determination in his eyes.
"Hhehe...Whatever you shorty" victoria said laughing looking over at you hitting your arm gently. while wipping a fake tear from under her eye.
You looked at her and started laughing too. Then once you guys were done doing all that laughing, your team and Tanaka's team began playing all the games.
///
" Kenma...i couldve sworn i thought you was about to break down just because you lost "1" game"
you say laughing a little.
" Yea me too, that look on his face killed me, it was too funny"
victoria said laughing too with a tear in her eye.
" i was shocked thats all, ive never lost a game
before"
he said quietly grinning a little. Its been 1hr and you met Tanaka's group back at the dinning area, To see who had got the most tickets.Earlier Before yall had met up you went to the ticket counter where you slide your card and it tells you how many tickets who had.
Y/N: 500
Kenma: 845
Victoria: 650
So all together you all had 1,995 tickets. You walked to tanaka and you told him how much you all had.
He smiled grimacingly '' Well, Well, Y/N i guess you finally....lost, it was just by one ticket too" your heart dropped, yours eyes widen. You looked over at kenma and it looked like he had a stroke, Victoria was cursing underneath her breathe. Tanaka, Nisho, and Hinata were all jumping up and down happy that they finally took the trio down.
" Yesss i told you Y/N we would win" Hinata shouted
"haha...in your faces" Nisho and Tanaka said together doing a goofy pose, where Tanaka he holding Nisho in the air.
Tumblr media
You were disappointed but at the same time you couldnt help but laugh at them you loved your friends so much they were so fun to be around.
"Congrats you guys" you said in sweet voice, while walking up to them with your hand out to shake each of theirs. Until you got to Hinata holding on to his hand and lightly squeezing it, leaning your head down to his ear whispering intimidating him
"But ill tell you this....Next time we WONT lose...okay!" you said the last part in high pitched voice smiling, while leaning away from him and walking back to your group.
After the competition you guys talked and ate some food, and by this time it was getting late,So you and victoria said your goodbyes to the boys and walked out of the building into the car and drove home.

------------
The next morning, you wake up feeling horrible, in more ways than one.
You open your eyes and promptly squeeze them shut again.
“Ugh,” you groan. Why is it so bright in here?
There’s a dull throbbing inside your skull and your entire body aches. If you didn’t know any better, you’d guess you were coming down with an illness. However, you know this is purely self-inflicted; which means you don’t deserve to feel as sorry for yourself as you do, or at all in fact.
You peel your eyes open again, squinting against the light, and make a clumsy attempt at sitting up in the bed.
“Mornin’ Sleeping Beauty,” Heather says cheerily from beside you. You flinch at the sound, too loud for you having only just woken up. “How you feeling?”
You bring a hand up to massage your temple.
“Like death.” The words scratch against the inside of your throat.
Heather chuckles from beside you on the bed. The mattress trembles slightly beneath her.
“Look like it too,” She says jokingly. She’s lying on her stomach on top of the covers, flipping through a magazine, still wearing her pyjamas.
You see that someone, probably Heather, has placed a glass of water on the bedside table next to you and you reach for it, suddenly aware of how dry the inside of your mouth is. You take a few grateful gulps then place it back down, feeling slightly nauseous.
You move the covers off you and notice that you’re wearing your pyjamas. You don’t remember putting them on last night; in fact, everything after the party is a bit of a blur.
“How did we get home?” you ask Heather, unsettled by the blank space in your memory.
“Steve drove us. When he came to find me, you passed out on a bench; that’s probably why you don’t remember. He carried you in too.” She laughs at the memory of it, but you feel the shame starting to creep in.
“I’m so sorry I pulled you away from the party early,” you say. “And I’m sorry I got so drunk.”
“Don’t be,” she smiles and shrugs, “It’s fine, we’ve all done it before.”
You’re happy Heather’s not mad at you, but you still feel bad. And it wasn’t just her night you cut short either; you should thank Steve at school on Monday for helping you.
Heather scoots slightly closer to you on the bed.
“And I’m sorry that I left you,” she says.
“Heather, don’t be silly. Even if you had been with me, it probably would have still ended the same way.”
She gives you another small smile then looks down at the magazine. She closes it, smoothing the cover of it out with her hand. You can tell she’s thinking about something.
“Steve said you were upset about Billy?” she asks, glancing up at you.
Ah yes, now that part you do remember.
You sigh.
“Yeah, I think I fucked up,” you say, scrubbing your hand down your face.
“You wanna talk about it?”
“Not really,” you say, but you continue anyway. “Turns out Billy is the new captain of the boys’ basketball team.”
“Oh,” she breathes.
“Yeah, exactly. I found out and sorta flipped out about it. It was baaad.” You want to bury yourself back under the covers at the memory of it, but you just about manage to refrain.
“What did you say to him?”
“I can’t remember exactly,” you say, rubbing at your temples again to try and ease the throbbing. “I just remember shouting at him and then storming off.” You groan, recalling his face as he’d asked you where you were going. “I mean, sure, I’m still annoyed about him stealing my gym time, but if I’d just taken a second to think about it, instead of biting his head off…” you sigh in frustration at yourself. “There’s no way he’s ever gonna agree to let me have my days back now.”
She considers your words silently for a moment.
“Well, maybe it wasn’t that bad. I’m sure he’ll forgive you.”
You look at her skeptically.
“He clearly likes you,” she continues. “Enough to kiss you, anyway.”
I suppose she has a point. But wait-
“How do you know about that?” you ask, eyeing her suspiciously.
“I just assumed,” she says, smirking.  “And also, you have a hickey on your neck.” She points to it.
“What?!”
You leap off the bed and check yourself in her mirror, moving the collar of your pyjama top out of the way to better see the red mark on your neck, not yet a bruise, from where Billy had been kissing you last night.
Oh fuck. I can’t let my mum see this!!
You turn to look at her in distress.
“Heather!” you scold as she laughs at you from the bed.
“Oh calm down, it’ll cover up easy enough,” she says, shuffling to the end of the mattress and sitting cross-legged. “So, was it good?” She asks you eagerly.
“Was what good?”
“The kiss, stupid.”
You stare at her in disbelief for a moment. That’s what she’s choosing to focus on?
“Yeah, it was great,” you say dismissively, sitting down on the end of the bed next to her, “but that doesn’t really matter, does it, because he probably thinks I’m a psycho after the way I acted.” You groan and flump down onto the mattress so that you’re lying on your back.
Heather gives an exasperated sigh from beside your legs and you sit up halfway to look at her, propped up on your elbows.
“So then apologise,” she says, as if it’s the obvious solution. Like it’s that easy.
You scoff a laugh.
“Oh yeah,” you say skeptically.
“Look, just say you were really drunk. That’s the great thing about parties; if you do something stupid, you can just blame it on the alcohol.”
You frown at her words. Your head hurts and all you want to do is lay here for the rest of your life, hiding from the world.
“Can’t I just avoid him forever?” you say pathetically. You flop down onto your back again and groan, turning your face into the covers.
She laughs at you.
“Not if you want this whole thing with basketball practice sorted you can’t.” Ugh. Why does she always have to be right?!
“Trust me, I really don’t think this is as big a deal as you’re making it out to be,” she says, amusement in her voice. “It’s like I said, he obviously likes you; you can totally use that to your advantage.”
You uncover your face and peek at her.
“And you never know, if it goes well, you might even get another kiss!” she says excitedly, jostling you on the mattress. You smile into the covers, trying to hide your face from her.
You’re not so sure about that; but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t like the idea of kissing Billy again. You bite your lip, thinking about the kiss you had shared last night.
“Ok, fine!” you say finally, glaring at her playfully as you sit up. “I’ll go talk to him tomorrow. Now fix my neck!” you gesture at Billy’s mark on your skin and Heather grabs her makeup bag off the dresser, still laughing at you. At least one of us is enjoying this situation!
----------------
Realising that there’s still a good chance that Billy will try to book out the gym for your slot on Tuesday, you make the effort to arrive at school slightly earlier than usual on Monday morning.
You do still plan to find him and apologise for your behaviour on Saturday, but you also want to try and avoid any more tension with your own team, and beating him to the booking schedule would definitely help with that.
Your chances are looking pretty good too; as you pull into the parking lot there’s a good selection of available parking spaces and, much to your delight, the car that had taken to blocking your spot last week, is nowhere to be seen.
It even feels like it might be warmer today; the sun shining down on you as you back into your space. And (dare you say it?) it feels like this might be a sign from the Universe that things could be looking up this week.
When you enter the office you find Amber sitting at her desk as per usual, filing her pristine nails and chanking on gum. Her eyeshadow is bright pink today.
She glances up at you as you enter.
“Hi Amber,” you begin.
She sighs heavily.
“I’ll spare you the breath,” she says, in her familiar nasally voice. “You’re already too late.”
You freeze, mid-step, in the doorway.
“Oh for fuck’s sake, really?” you say in disbelief.
“Will you keep your voice down?” she hisses at you. “The Principal is in a meeting.” She points with her nail file at the dark brown door that leads off from the main office area, with a small golden plaque that reads ‘Principal Davies.’
She sighs again. Puts her nail file down on the desk. She’s reaching for the booking schedule, but you don’t need to look at it to know whose initials will be on it.
You walk forward and take it from her anyway.
B.H glares up at you from the paper in neat cursive and your stomach sinks.
How is it that someone who barely even shows up to lessons has managed to beat you to booking out the gym three times in a row?!
You consider arguing your case, but you know it’ll do no good. Amber may be bad at her job, but she’s a stickler for the rules. Or maybe it’s just that she likes telling people ‘no.’ Yeah, that sounds more likely. Either way, it’s a fight you know you won’t win.
You hand the clipboard back to Amber and leave the office, defeated; all hopes of this day being a good one, well and truly dashed.
What am I gonna do now?
You already know the answer. You need Billy to switch days with you, or at the very least agree to stop stealing your days. Which means you need to find him and apologise before lunch break; there’s no way you can face your team in the cafeteria without this being sorted. Your stomach knots up at the very thought.
You head for your locker like always but as you’re early, Nancy won’t be there yet. You could really use her advice right now about how to approach things with the team. She has always been much better at the politics of it all than you.
You hear quiet muttering and look up to see a guy and a girl standing at the left hand side of the corridor, talking amongst themselves as they get their books from their lockers. You notice that they keep glancing at you as you pass. You continue on your way, but as you turn the corner you peer over your shoulder and see that they’re still looking at you. The boy says something and the girl nods and laughs. Don’t be paranoid, you tell yourself. They could be talking about anything.
When you get to your locker however, a girl who’s in the same Math class as you and Heather watches you from the end of the hall. You shoot her a friendly smile as you open up your locker but she just frowns at you and looks away. That’s strange.
Maybe you have something on your face? Or maybe people are just shocked to see you at school early for once. Or maybe news of your drunken antics on Saturday has already spread throughout the school. Knowing your luck at the moment, it’s probably the latter.
You adjust the neck of your jumper, pulling it higher just in case, making sure the mark on your neck is covered.
As you turn back to grab your books from your locker, you spot Nancy and Steve heading up the corridor towards you.
Nancy is slightly ahead, walking quickly, with her head down and Steve is hurrying along behind her, trying to keep pace. He says something to her but she doesn’t acknowledge him. You guess they might be having an argument.
When they reach you, you say hi but neither of them returns it. Nancy goes straight to her locker, with only a brief glance to you. Wow, he must have really pissed her off.
Steve leans against the front of the locker on the other side of Nancy’s and briefly meets your eyes, giving you a very quick, very strained smile. He runs his hand through the front of his hair, and from the way it doesn’t flop back into its regular shape like it usually would, you guess that he’s been running his hand through it a lot this morning.
You really want to get straight into telling Nancy all about Billy being the new captain and how he’s booked out the gym again, but something’s telling you this might not be the best time. If they have indeed just had an argument it isn’t really fair of you to lay this on her as well. You should wait until later.
You clear your throat a little awkwardly.
“I owe you a ‘thank you’ for Saturday,” you say to Steve over Nancy’s head. He glances at you with slightly startled, hazel eyes.
You feel Nancy watching the pair of you, unsmiling.
“He was great, Nance,” you tell her, trying to make Steve look good so that maybe she will be slightly less mad with him. “Made sure I got home safe.”
Nancy continues to look unimpressed.
“That’s ok, Y/N, you don’t need to thank me,” Steve says quickly, then glances nervously at Nancy.
“Well, I at least owe you an apology then,” you huff a laugh and then add, to Nancy, who’s staring at you with one eyebrow partially raised, “I was wasted.” You give a nervous bubble of laughter.
“Yeah, Steve already told me all about it.” There’s an edge of resentment to her tone.
You feel like you should probably leave and let them continue their argument in peace. You’re about to make your excuses when you think of something.
“Hey, did either of you guys happen to see Billy when you were outside?”
You’re expecting some sort of cutting comment from at least one of them about Billy but, surprisingly, it doesn’t come. Nancy goes back to grabbing her books out of her locker.
“I don’t think so,” Steve shrugs, “I doubt he’s even here yet.”
“Oh,” is all you say, although you know he is here already, because he booked out the gym before you.
Nancy shuts her locker forcefully and with a certain finality.
“Right, well. I’ll, uh, see you at lunch Nance,” you say to her.
“Yeah.” She gathers her belongings and starts heading off towards her first lesson.
“Bye,” Steve says to you, looking slightly harassed, then rushes to catch up with Nancy again.
You watch them go, hoping whatever they were arguing about wasn’t anything too serious. They’ll probably be all loved up again by lunch time.
You stand next to your locker for a little while longer, trying to think of where the best place to start looking for Billy is. There’s not long left until first period is due to start. You figure he’s probably smoking.
You go outside, despite Steve saying he hadn’t seen him out there, and head over to the bike shed. You check the space behind it, where you met him last week.
No luck; it’s empty.
You head back up to the school just as the bell sounds and you hurry to your lesson.
------
In between each period, you go back outside and check behind the bike shed. Apart from just aimlessly walking around the corridors hoping to bump into him, it’s the only place you can think to look. After your third time of checking the little alleyway, it’s looking less and less likely that you’ll find him before you have to face your team. It’s time for a contingency plan, you think. You can’t turn up unprepared, or Ashley will chew you up and spit you out.
So during fourth period, you find yourself barely paying any attention to what’s going on, choosing to spend your time jotting down the points that you want to make to your team and a rough plan of action.
When lunch time rolls around, you still haven’t found Billy and you’re officially out of time.
You visit the bathroom on your way to the cafeteria and take a moment to stare at your reflection in the mirror above the sinks, giving yourself a pep-talk.
“Come on, Y/N, you got this,” you tell yourself. Just hold it together, your team needs you.
You sigh. You remember a time when being captain was straight forward.
You bet your sister never had to deal with any of this shit when she was captain. But even if she did, she’d know exactly how to handle it. You meet your eyes in the mirror. Push the thought down.
You huff a breath, deciding to stop procrastinating and just get this over with.
When you enter the cafeteria, you do a quick sweep of the room with your eyes, hoping Billy will be here. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of him, but you spot Carol sitting at a table near the door, talking with a small group of her friends. Maybe she’ll know where Billy is? It may be too late to fix things before you have to face your team, but if you knew where he was going to be later, you could still get this sorted today at least.
You go over to her.
“What, do I look like his keeper to you?” She sneers unpleasantly at you when you ask her. Takes a long slurp through her straw.
“Carol, look, I really need to talk to him,” you try to reason with her.
She scoffs.
“Oh yeah, I bet you do.” Her tone is mean, judging. A couple of her friends laugh. You assume that’s a dig at you for kissing Billy at the party on Saturday.
She’s probably just jealous because she’s stuck with Tommy, you tell yourself.
Before you can press her any further, she’s standing up and walking away from you, with a roll of her eyes. Her cronies follow her. One of them, a girl with ginger hair and a turned up nose, coughs exaggeratedly as she walks past you. You’re pretty sure you hear her utter the word ‘slut’ in between coughs and the others dissolve into laughter as they leave the cafeteria.
You scoff disbelievingly at their behaviour, but you refuse to let it bother you. You only kissed him. If they think that makes you a slut then they’re just prudes. Pretty sure most of them have done a whole lot worse anyway.
You’re distracted by Ashley, who’s standing up at your team’s table. Here we go.
As you head over to them, she stops talking and sits down.
You take a seat opposite Nancy. She looks up at you but doesn’t smile, just casts her eyes back down at her lunch, on the table in front of her. She must still be upset. You make a mental note to check if she’s ok when you’re alone.
You take out the notepad you’d written in earlier, turning to the page with your scribbled notes on. You don’t even bother taking out your lunch; you don’t think you can stomach eating anything until this is over with.
You glance up the table to check everyone’s here, to see Ashley eyeing you expectantly.
You take a preparatory breath.
“Ok, so guys, I’m just gonna get straight to it,” they all turn their attention to you. “We lost our gym slot for tomorrow to the boys again.”
Ashley barely reacts. If anything, her face grows slightly smugger, almost as if she had predicted this. Everyone else, on the other hand, had obviously thought this whole fiasco had already been dealt with. Or, that’s what you assume from their various reactions.
Molly pauses, her sandwich still held halfway to her mouth, and gapes at you.
“What?” She lowers her food. “Are you serious?”
Nancy is peering at you, a deep furrow in her brow. Her expression is hard to read. You’re not sure if she’s annoyed at you, like everyone else, or worried for you.
Rebecca and Jenny, your substitutes, are having a full blown rant at the other end of the table.
You can do this. Just follow your notes.
You glance down at your notebook and remind yourself of your plan of action.
“I know. I’m sorry, but as it’s first come, first serve, there isn’t much I can do about it. So, if we look at our op-”
“Wait, so you’re telling us that, after this happened last week, you didn’t think it was a good idea to get here earlier to try and beat him?” It’s Ashley who’s interrupted you.
Of course she can’t just make this easy for you.
You don’t even want to justify her comment with a response, but everyone at the table is looking to you for some sort of explanation.
“I tried,” you begin, “but he got here-” This time it’s Margo who cuts in.
“Wait a minute, I thought you said you were going to speak to their captain last week?”
“I did, or at least I attempted to, but I couldn’t find him,” you say.
“But weren’t you with him on Saturday?” Rebecca asks. She and Jenny share a look and the latter suppresses a laugh by turning her face into her shoulder, hiding behind a curtain of curly hair. Great, looks like the whole school knows…
You don’t even try to mask your frustrated sigh.
“Yes, but I didn’t know Billy was their captain at that point,” you say tersely, subconsciously adjusting the neck of your jumper.
You don’t even have to ask to guess how they knew that you were with Billy at the party on Saturday. Carol. She’s such a little…
Ashley scoffs a laugh.
“How did you not know?” she asks, sounding more than a little amused. Oh, I bet she’s just loving this.
“Can we please just get back on topic?” Nancy snaps, speaking for the first time since you’d sat down at the table.
Everyone looks at her in surprise; Margo even leans slightly away from her, as if she’s worried she’ll bite.
You could kiss Nancy right now. Thank you, you tell her with your eyes. She looks back down at her lunch again.
You clear your throat.
“Yes, as I was saying, our options are this: I can keep trying to book out the gym for our regular days, however as that is proving difficult, I suggest we try for another day as well. And as the boys are practicing on our days at the moment, we can assume that Wednesdays and Fridays will now be free.” You pause, giving everyone a chance to soak up the information.
“Well, Friday is when I look after my sister,” Margo says, popping a carrot stick into her mouth with a loud crunch.
That sparks a barrage of reasons why people ‘can’t do Fridays.’ You had expected that though.
“Then that leaves us with Wednesdays,” you say. “I appreciate it may be too short notice for some, but I think if most of us can make it, we should aim for Wednesday this week, plus one of our regular days; let’s say tomorrow. That way I can talk to Billy before practice to try and get this sorted sooner.” You look around the table and don’t see anyone objecting. Finally, now we’re getting somewhere.
“Right, so raise your hand if you can make Wednesday this week,” you say, raising your own. Most people do, with the exception of Jenny, but you’re not too fussed about missing one person; plus she’s a substitute so it should be fine. Ashley hesitates, glancing around at the rest of her teammates before reluctantly raising her own arm. She rolls her eyes for good measure as she does it, just to show you she isn’t happy.
“Ok, great,” you say. Everyone puts their hands down. You glance at your notes again, “I’ll try for Wednesday then; but, to be clear,” you look back up at your team, “we will just have to resign ourselves to training outside tomorrow. And possibly for the foreseeable future if Billy decides to make things difficult for us.”
Molly groans loudly in response.
“I know,” you say to her. “That is the worst case scenario; but at least the weather is starting to get warmer. Soon, it won’t be as unbearable anymore.”
“Yeah, but that’s just part of the problem,” Ashley pipes up. “How are we supposed to practice effectively, long term, without any basketball hoops?” she folds her arms over her chest, waiting for your answer. Jessica copies her, nodding. The whole team seems to be watching for your rebuttal.
“That’s a very good point, Ashley,” you say, begrudgingly. “I would suggest that as a team, we all try to come up with some solutions, just in case we do find ourselves having to train outside again in the future. But let’s just see how things go with Billy tomorrow; I’ll talk to him before practice, then we’ll take it from there. It might be that he just lets us have Tuesdays and Thursdays, you never know,” you say, shrugging. I really hope it’s that easy, you add to yourself.
Everyone, with the exception of Ashley, seems to be appeased by this solution and conversation eventually turns away from basketball, much to your relief.
Nancy stands, having finished her lunch, and gathers up her rubbish. You also stand, grabbing your notebook and say a hasty goodbye to your team; taking this as your chance to check if she’s ok.
She doesn’t wait for you, heading straight for the doors of the cafeteria. You hurry after her.
“Nance!” you shout when you make it into the corridor.
She slows her pace so you can catch up. She spares you a small glance as you reach her but doesn’t say anything.
“Thanks for helping me out back there,” you say, walking beside her now. You offer her a smile but she’s looking straight ahead of her, so she doesn’t see it.
“I know it’s not an ideal situation for us all to be in, but I appreciate the support,” you add.
She still doesn’t look at you.
You’re trying not to take her frosty demeanor towards you personally, because you figure it’s still to do with her argument with Steve from this morning.
“Hey, are you ok?” you ask her.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she says, curtly. Then she gives her head a small shake, as if she realises she’s being short with you and finally glances at you, her expression softening slightly. “Sorry, I’m ok. Thanks for asking.” She offers you a small smile then drops it quickly, looking ahead again.
You’re not sure whether to ask her about her argument with Steve or not. You figure if she wants you to know about it, she’ll tell you herself; so you decide against bringing it up.
You change the subject.
“Did you know Billy was the captain of the boys’ team?”
“No,” she says, then pauses for a second, “Actually, I think Steve did mention something about it, yeah.” She glances at you, an apology in her eyes.
How is it that everyone knew but no one thought to tell me?!
The bell rings to signal the end of lunch.
As students start filling the hall, Nancy turns to you.
“I better get to Biology. See you later,” she says, before heading in the direction of her classroom. You watch her go then make your way to your own lesson.
----------------
The next morning, you find yourself standing in the office, staring down at the booking sheet again, not quite believing your luck. So he’s taking all the days now?!
“He came in this morning and booked this?” you ask Amber.
She looks up from her magazine.
“Well, duh,” she says, looking at you like you’re stupid. “How else would his name be on there?”
You look down at the neat, curly letters in front of you, a deep crease in your brow.
“But I’m even earlier than yesterday,” you say. It’s not necessarily aimed at Amber. “I don’t get it.” You look up at her, putting the booking schedule back down on the desk.
“How long ago was he in here?” you ask her.
She pauses her reading again with a sigh. Looks at you over the top of her glasses in exasperation.
“What?”
“Billy. Did I literally just miss him? What time was it when he came in?”
She blinks at you.
“I don’t know,” she says, huffs like you’re asking too much of her. “Not long ago,” she shrugs.
“And you’re sure it’s definitely the same guy booking it as last week?”
She rolls her eyes at you.
“Er, yeah,” she says curtly. You realise it’s an odd question, but there’s just something that doesn’t quite feel right. You can’t put your finger on it though.
“Tanned, blonde mullet,” you check.
“Ridiculously good-looking; yeah, it’s the same guy alright,” she says. Shoots you a look as if to say ‘will that be all?’ She picks her magazine up again, makes a point of holding it in front of her to show she’s no longer paying attention to you.
Welp, that’s as much as I’m getting out of her. You glance back down at the booking schedule on her desk, frowning at his initials, then huff a sigh and leave.
You decide to try your luck at finding Billy again. He can’t be far. If he booked it not that long ago then maybe he’s still hanging around somewhere?
You doubt he’d be the sort to get to class early, seeing as he barely even shows up at all. I could check the library, I suppose.
You quickly check outside first, including behind the bike shed, but to no avail; then you do a sweep of the corridors and, finally, the library. The bell rings.
Nowhere. How is he nowhere?!
Frustrated, you make your way to class.
------
After school, you’re pacing back and forth in front of the large trophy cabinet just outside the doors to the gym. You’d kept an eye out all day for Billy, but hadn’t seen him. He didn’t show up for Chem 3rd period either. If you didn’t already know that he’d been in school to book the gym out in the morning, you would have guessed he wasn’t even in school at all.
But you knew he’d be here now, in the gym. He can’t avoid you any longer; not that you think that’s what he’s doing. But… maybe he is?
You’re wearing your basketball gear, which consists of your school sports hoodie and gym shorts, with a scarf carefully wrapped around your neck to hide the hickey. Luckily with the weather being so cold outside, no one on your team questioned why you were wearing it to practice.
You’d instructed the other girls to start warming up on the forecourt before making your way here. However, now you’re about to see him for the first time since the party, you’re not quite sure you’re ready for it.
Your bottom lip throbs a little from where you’ve been worrying it between your teeth all the way here.
You can hear the sound of sneakers squeaking against the polished floor of the gym on the other side of the door.
Just apologise for Saturday, you tell yourself. You were in the wrong, you know that. Billy’s cool, he’ll probably be fine about it.
You take a deep breath and push open the double doors.
Billy is in the middle of the court, practicing one on one with one of his teammates as the others stretch and jog laps at the edge of the room.
He’s shirtless; curls grazing his naked shoulders as he confidently blocks the other guy’s attempts to get past him with the ball.
Your eyes linger on him as you hover by the door, waiting for the right moment to catch his eye. You don’t want to interrupt him.
A few of the other team members have paused in their stretches and are watching you from across the gym. Tommy spots you and shouts to Billy to get his attention.
“Hey, Hargove.” Tommy points to you and Billy looks up at him, then over at you.
His jaw clenches when he sees you and your stomach drops slightly. Yep, he’s pissed at me.
Ok, that’s fine, you think, trying to calm your nerves. You knew he probably would be. No need to stress, you take a deep breath, just stick to the plan.
You wave him over.
He looks away and, for a second, you think he might be choosing to ignore you. Then he charges at the other boy, ramming him with his shoulder and knocking him to the ground. He easily gains possession of the ball and dribbles it over to the basket, laughing cockily. He passes it under his own leg and dunks it with minimal effort. As he looks over at you again, his eyes flash, the same way they had at the party when he’d seen you talking to Steve. He goes over to where the other guy is on the floor.
“You were moving your feet,” Billy says, pulling him up, “Next time, plant them.”
He slowly looks you over as he approaches, taking in your gym shorts and bare legs. Notices the scarf around your neck. Then he meets your eyes with a steely gaze.
“Come to see how the game is meant to be played?” He asks when he reaches you, earning a few snickers from his team mates, all of whom have abandoned their warm up to watch.
You blink a couple of times, caught off guard by his standoffish tone and his clearly sexist comment, which you choose to ignore.
“I er, actually wanted to talk to you about Saturday,” you say, trying to keep your voice down so the rest of the team can’t eavesdrop. “Could we maybe talk in the hall?” you ask, gesturing over your shoulder at the door.
He tells the others to keep warming up, without a word to you, and leads the way out of the gym. You hear Tommy’s voice call out after you, but you don’t hear his words, muffled by the door closing. It’s probably something obnoxious though, and no doubt a comment about you and kissing. Whatever it is, the other guys find it amusing. Their laughter reaches you in the corridor.
Billy turns to face you, licking his bottom lip. Your eyes go to it, just as they had on Saturday in Tammy’s garden. Suddenly you’re thinking about what had followed that; his mouth on yours, his hands on your body.
You fight to compose yourself, to get your mind back on the matter at hand. You clear your throat. This would be so much easier if he had more clothes on.
“So,” you start, nervously fidgeting with your hands, trying not to look at his bare chest. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry for how I acted at the party. I was pretty drunk and I-” He cuts you off.
“Which part are you apologising for?” he asks you, licks his lips again.
You blanch at the question, thrown off. Before you can ask him what he means, he clarifies for you.
“Flipping out for no reason and leaving me standing there like a jackass or for kissing me and then going home with Pretty Boy?” His voice is irritated.
“What?” you ask, dumbfounded. You expected him to be annoyed at you for shouting at him but… Pretty Boy? Is he talking about Steve?
He scoffs a laugh, running his tongue along his top row of teeth.
“Carol said she saw you leave the party with Harrington.”
Oh, for fuck’s sake.
“Yeah,” you say quickly, trying to explain yourself, “But it wasn’t like that. I was wasted, he was just making sure I got home safe.”
It suddenly makes sense why everyone has been acting so weird around you since Monday. So Carol has been spreading rumours; only, it’s worse than you had thought.
The whole school must think I slept with Steve! Oh, that’s just great. And after your little ‘display’ with Billy in the garden, why wouldn’t they believe it? Kissing someone you barely know...
You think about how Nancy had given you the cold shoulder yesterday. Oh no, poor Nancy... You’d assumed she’d been upset with Steve and was just projecting, but she must have been upset with both of you.
You can’t believe how ridiculous this whole situation is.
“Sure,” Billy says disbelievingly.
It irritates you that he would think that little of you.
Even if something had happened with Steve- which it hadn’t and obviously never would- it’s not like it’s even his business.
Why does he even care? Jesus, a guy kisses you once and thinks he owns you. And it’s not like he can talk, anyway; according to both Nancy and Steve, Billy’s got a reputation of his own to worry about.
You have to remind yourself that there was another reason you came here to talk to him. You need him to forgive you, so keep it civil.
“Well, either way, I’m sorry.” You manage to keep your tone remorseful.
He stares at you for a long moment, arms folded over his chest and chin jutting out defiantly as he considers your words.
“Ok,” is all he says, shrugging once. He starts to walk away from you, back towards the doors of the gym.
“Wait, Billy,” you say, moving quickly to follow him.
“Please can you stop booking out the gym on my days?” Your tone borders on pleading.
He turns back to you, cocking his head to one side in mock confusion. Squints at you.
“I’m sorry, your days?”
“Yeah, Tuesdays and Thursdays,” you clarify for him, even though he knows full well what you meant. “I agreed it with Matt. My team gets those days; you get Wednesdays and Fridays.”
He licks his lips and leans in towards you.
“Well, Matt’s not the captain anymore; I am.” He’s watching your face closely as he speaks. You notice his eyes flick to your lips before they move back up to meet your gaze. “So that no longer stands.”
You exhale slowly, letting go of the breath you had been holding. This conversation is not going the way I planned, at all.
“Surely we can come to some sort of arrangement?”
He takes another half step closer so that his face is only a few inches from yours. You try not to breathe him in.
“I would love to make an ‘arrangement’ with you,” he says suggestively; his tone makes you think he might not just be talking about basketball practice, “but I’m not really in the mood.” He backs away from you slightly.
This must be his way of punishing me for Saturday. I can’t believe he’s being so petty!
He goes to walk away from you again.
“Billy, please.” You go to reach out and touch his arm but think better of it, dropping your hand back to your side. You hate grovelling to him, but you’re running out of options. “My team can’t practice on the forecourt for the rest of the season; there aren’t even any hoops out there! If you really have to practise on Tuesday and Thursdays can’t we work it out so that we each get one day in the gym and one day on the forecourt? Or you could let me have Wednesdays instead?” You’re desperately listing off your remaining options, just praying he’ll agree to one of them. “Please, I need something to work with here!” He smiles at you but it’s not friendly.
“Sorry Princess,” he puts emphasis on the new nickname, and you feel your face screw up in disgust of it, “your team might need the practice more than us, but as the only ones with any real chance of making it to the finals, we should get priority,” he says smugly.
How dare he?! We are every bit as good as them!
That’s it, to Hell with being civil!
“Well, you can’t stop me if I book the gym out before you,” you say petulantly, seething at his comment. He thinks he’s won, but he hasn’t. I’ll show him! I’ll just have to get here for as soon as the office opens. There’s no way he’d get here that early.
“Yeah, good luck with that,” he scoffs.
“Oh, it’s on, Hargrove. It is on.”
You start stomping away up the corridor but he calls after you.
“Hey, Y/N,” he says. You whip back around, scowling. “Nice scarf.”
His eyes meet yours and instantly you understand. He knows that underneath the patterned piece of material around your neck, is the mark that he left on you.
He laughs at your stunned expression, like a smug asshole, then heads back into the gym, leaving you standing there in the corridor, totally lost for words.

"Nervous?"
That all-too-familiar British accent made you look away from the car window, eyes landing on a handsome man who was sitting right beside you. A worried smile was etched on his lips as he tilted his head to the side, hand resting on your bare leg in a comforting manner, the car ride quiet aside from the soft music that the radio was playing and the soft mumbles of the other people accompanying you.
You couldn't stop yourself from admiring him as he was all groomed up, wearing a classic black suit that fitted is body perfectly, a white dress shirt paired with a bow tie, radiating that James Bond feel with his hair gelled back to give him that clean and sleek look.
You gave him a small nod. "A little bit. Thank you so much for coming with me Tom." You flashed him a grateful smile, placing your hand on top of his as you gave it a soft squeeze.
"Hey, of course, it's your first VMA's, I wouldn't miss it for the world. And I know how much you hate red carpets but still, you join me when I ask you to walk with me. The least I can do is return the favor."
You know that there was something more between you two other than being just casual friends, even Tom does too as he's already confessed to you how he really feels, but none of you has bother to do something about it yet, being that you've just broken up with your boyfriend not too long ago.
_______
You're still figuring yourself out and Tom being the kindest, most understand and sweetest person that he is, he respected that and has done nothing but be there when you needed him most.
"Have I already told you how gorgeous you look?" The young man grinned, eyes admiring you in a way that made your stomach do a flip.
"Yes, now quit ogling, your making me melt." You joked with a roll of your eyes, feigning a slight hint of annoyance in your voice that only made him chuckle. Tom was about to says something but didn't get a chance to respond as the car came to a halt, a crowded red carpet in full view once the both of you took a glance at the tinted window.
Tom interlaced his fingers with yours, giving it a comforting squeeze before his free hand took hold of the door handle. "Ready?"
You took one deep breath as you gave him the go signal, the door sliding open seconds later as he slowly stepped out of the car.
Tom helped you out like the gentleman that he is, your grip on his hand tightening as the flashing lights invaded your eyes in a matter of minutes, your name being screamed by dozens of photographers as they try to get a hold of your attention.
You wore your best smile as you threaded down the carpet, following the usherette assigned to guide the two of you and then stopping to pose as how these things always go.
Tom lets go of your hand to wrap an arm around your waist, your eyes meeting his as he gave it a reassuring squeeze to let you know that he's got you. The amount of time the two of you had walked the red carpet this past few months made him understand why you don't liked carpet. You do get a bit flustered with this much attention, like your being held under a magnifying glass and that one wrong move could be seen even if it's miniscule.
You mirrored his smile as your turned around to fully face him, hand coming up to fix his bow tie as both of his took home on your hips.
"Why did you wear a bow tie? You know very well that you can't keep this straight not matter how hard you try." You teased, hand sliding down his chest once the tie was straight enough for your liking.
The flashing lights and the screaming were never ending but you've learned to tune it out for the amount of times you've done this already. Tom chuckled as he guided you further down the carpet again, stopping to take another pose before he spoke.
"I mean you do like it more when I wear this than a regular tie. You think I look ravishing, you just hate to admit it." Tom retorted with a smirk. You rolled your eyes at that. "Oh please, don't be so full of yourself Holland."
It was going great so far, all laughs and smiles between you and Tom but of course, that only lasted for a moment as you heard the paparazzi scream the names of the people you weren't exactly keen to see.
What a way of the universe to joke that they had to arrive just after you did. You were praying, begging that you could at least walk the carpet without seeing that specific familiar face, but we don't always get what we want in this world do we.
Tom felt you tense up a little bit his head turning to see what was wrong, but when he finally heard who has just arrived, he was quick to switch from playful to overprotective mode, his grip on your waist tightening as he pulled you closer to his side.
"You alright?" Tom leaned closer to whisper in your ear. You nodded with a hum, your faces just an inch away as he pulled back, the concern on his features only lasting a split second as it was quick to change, his smile now wide and bright as he looked at you adoringly.
"He's watching." He spoke between his grin once he took in your confused expression and you were impressed at how fast he can change his mood all of the sudden, but then again, he is an amazing actor after all.
You flashed him a thankful smile, glad that he understood why you're suddenly uncomfortable without having to explain it. So grateful that he was here just as how he's been from the beginning.
With a deep intake of breath, you willed yourself to ignore them, to not even have a peek as you focused on the tasked at hand, focusing more at the gentleman beside you.
Just grin and bear it Y/N, carpet is almost done.
Shawn however, was having a really hard time ignoring you.
Though he was walking with someone else, he can't stop himself from stealing quick glances in your direction whenever he can, making sure that he was doing it as discreetly as he could. The internet would go crazy if he gets caught longingly looking at someone who they only knew was his friend. You never did go public, you didn't get the chance to as everything when south in a blink of an eye. But seeing you right now in the flesh after many months, Shawn feels like his heart was about to jump out of his chest.
He was in awe to say the least.
You wore a fitted sheer dress covered in silver stones and glitters, the garment hugging your body in the right spots giving you a beautiful figure that was making Shawn's head spin. More so with that plunging neckline that showed just enough for it look classy, along with a low back that made the dress look even sexier. As if that wasn't enough, the dress had a slit that showed off those legs in the most elegant way possible.
Your hair was up in a messy bun with a simple yet glamorous makeup, and that beautiful smile of yours that he'd always fall for. Shawn was at a loss for words at how breathtaking you look, you always do that to him no matter the occasion, and you never fail to do so, even to this day.
But his daydreaming was cut short when he finally noticed that you weren't alone too, a certain pang in his chest when you seem to look so happy in the arms of another.
The break up was entirely his fault.
He made a choice thinking that it was for the best, but now he was starting to think otherwise and he was slowly and painfully swallowing the consequences thus far.
Shawn got pulled straight out of his thoughts once your eyes met his the moment you looked over your shoulder. He blinked a couple of time to check if he wasn't hallucinating, seeing a bright smile painted on your lips as you gave him a curt nod, no ill-will written on your face before you broke his gaze, turning to face the person who stood too close by your side for Shawn's liking.
The way his arm was laced on your waist was not sitting well with Shawn at all, especially when this Tom guy was looking at you in a way that he used to. But what truly hurts was that familiar look of adoration on your beautiful face, the one you always gave Shawn whenever you're proud of him. That certain look that was used to be for him and him only, keyword: used to.
This made him think that maybe he was too late, and that you've finally moved on. That he's truly lost you fully this time.
He shook his head with a clear of his throat, standing straighter as he shoved all his thoughts in the back of his head, wrapping his arm around the girl beside him as he smiled at the cameras.
This was going to be a long night.
***
It was commercial break and you were thankful, your bladder just couldn't seem to hold it for much longer. You turned to Tom, nudging his arm as he was busy talking with someone's brother that you didn't quite catch the name of.
"I'm just gonna go the bathroom real quick." You whispered once his attention was on you, slowly getting out of your seat only for Tom to do the same. "I can take you–"
"No silly, it's fine. I'll be back as fast as I can I promise." You giggled, gently pushing him back down as you waved at the person he was taking to.
"Okay then, be careful you clumsy woman." Tom gave you a playful wink with a soft chuckle, you shaking your head in response, mumbling a soft 'shut up' before you walking off.
You reached an empty hallway that one of the staff members pointed you towards, the door of the bathroom coming to view moments later but that's when you heard rushed footsteps behind you, your mind immediately thinking that it was Tom following you as he was the only one who knows where you've gone.
"I thought I told you I can handle myself and pee alone Tom?" You giggled, turning around only to stop dead in your tracks as you were met by a familiar man, too familiar for your taste, one that sported those unruly curls on top of his head.
"Shawn." You breathed out, face contorted in sheer surprise as you were not expecting him at all.
"Y/N, hey." He flashed you a shy smile, both hands in his pockets as he slowly walked closer to you, stopping himself once you took a step back, sadness flashing across his features and you tried your hardest not to scoff out loud.
"What are you doing here?" You asked skeptically, crossing your arms over your chest, but not in an intimidating way, no, it was more as a defensive stance, shielding yourself in a sense.
The break up wasn't a mutual decision, nor did it end on a good note. It was painful, very painful.
It left you in such a dark place and you worked so hard to get yourself out of there. You've made your progress but you aren't exactly fully out yet, you are still in the process of healing as wounds are still a bit fresh, and there is no way in hell you're letting him pull you right back in.
"Just wanted to see you... I miss you."
You shut your eyes tight with a sigh as you shook your head at him. "Don't. Just don't."
Shawn didn't seem to get the hint as he only took a few more steps closer to you, lips parted slightly as he took you in completely. "You look so beautiful." He gushed, fingers absentmindedly pushing a strand of hair behind your ear once he was in close proximity, so close that you just had to look up at him.
You stood there frozen in your spot, heart beating rapidly against your chest as you found yourself stuck under his gaze. Those familiar brown eyes will always have a hold against you, especially when he's looking at you so yearningly, a certain glow crossing his features as is if he was too glad to be close to you again.
The more you stared into his eyes, the more you felt your walls slowly slip, so you pulled your head away from his grasp, clearing your throat as you took two steps back, a deep frown quick to appear on Shawn's lips but you paid it no mind.
"I'm sorry but I need to go." You hastily walked pass him but being the stubborn boy that he is, he took hold of your arm to pull you right back.
"No, wait." Shawn spun you around to face him again, both hands now gripping your elbows to keep you in place, his grasp firm but not too much for it to hurt. His action only made your annoyance grow, a slight anger now slowly boiling to the surface as you gave him a pointed look. "Let go of me Shawn."
The slight waver in your voice made Shawn drop his hands, the frown on his face never leaving as his brain slowly processed how you actually didn't want him near at all. It hurts to say the least but Shawn can't blame you.
He can only imagine what you've been true. The pain he's caused seemingly unforgivable that he, himself would want nothing to do with him either.
"Can you at least give us the chance to talk?" Shawn sounded so desperate but he didn't care. He was holding onto his last beacon of hope, that maybe deep inside, you still have feelings for him, that you still love him just as how he still loves you.
You let out an exasperated sigh. "There's nothing left to talk about Shawn. We broke up months ago. We are done. I've been moving on and you have no right to try and pull me back in now when I've been doing so much better than when you left me. And just to clarify, you have a girlfriend."
Shawn ran a frustrated hand through his curls. "Please honey, I've been regretting things a lot and I can't apologize enough for what I've done. I was stupid and I've been wanting to kick my ass every single day from the moment I hurt you. And seeing you today with Tom, how you look so happy with him, it fucking hurts so bad. I miss you so much, I want you back angel, I need you back Y/N."
A sarcastic laugh left your mouth before you could even stop it, eyes rolling as you shook your head at him in pure disbelief. "Wow. You're being unfair Shawn. Now that I'm happy and have been better, you suddenly want me back? When you see me with someone else you suddenly miss me? You had months to reach out to me Shawn. Fucking months, but not once did you ever think about calling me. I'm not going to be some girl who you only show interest to when it benefits you."
Shawn shook his head, bottom lip trembling as he took your hand in his, and you let him but never did you show him that it affected you in any way. "No that's not the reason. I still love you Y/N, I really do. Please just give me another chance."
You sighed, gaze softening as you watch him slowly break in front of you, but you weren't giving in, you've grown stronger since that day and you've learned to stand your ground, to do what's best yourself. "You've been living your best life during those months, touring the world, frolicking the streets while I was suffering in the pain that you've caused. I don't want to go through it again because it fucking hurts Shawn. It was a hard battle but I've overcome it. Maybe not fully yet but I am getting there, and I'm not letting you jeopardize that. You were a beautiful mistake, but I can't anymore. I'm done. Now will you please, let me go."
"No, angel please just–"
"Y/N! Is everything alright?" A huge relief washed over your body as that familiar voice bounced off the cream colored walls. Shawn's whole body going rigid as he closed his eyes, jaw clenching at the interruption.
"I'm sorry Shawn, but I think it's best that we keep our distance. You need to sort yourself out as do I." You whispered, slowly pulling your hands out of his grip and making your way towards Tom.
"Hey Tom, you know Shawn and yeah, everything's fine." The curly boy turned at his name, a tight lip smile on his face as he gave you both a curt nod.
"Hey man, nice to finally meet you." Tom moved forward as he reached a hand out, a friendly smile on his lips but you didn't miss his tight grip once Shawn took it, the tension between the two rising as Tom shook Shawn's hand hard and firm.
You saw Shawn's jaw visible clench as he slowly nodded his head, standing tall and strong with his nostrils slightly the flaring once Tom lets go of his hand. "Likewise. Big fan of the films."
You couldn't stop yourself from rolling your eyes as Shawn's voice got deeper than normal, the stare between the two looking like some high school confrontation.
Tom only chuckled with a nod. "Thanks mate. Appreciate it." He didn't wait for Shawn to respond as he turned his attention to you, hand wrapping around your waist in a sweet yet protective manner. "Tricia's been looking for you. It's almost your turn to perform love."
You flashed him a bright smile, a silent communication happening between you two and Shawn felt his heart sink to his stomach, eyes falling to the floor as he couldn't bear to watch you two any longer.
"Let's get going then. I still need to change. I'll see you around Shawn." You gave him one last smile before turning your back on him, walking down the hall to where you came from, wondering what both of your futures hold.
Shawn only watched as you disappeared out of sight, heart breaking into pieces as he slowly felt his knees give out, a tear slipping out of his eyes at that the thought that he's pushed you away, so far and into the arms of someone else.
He really has lost you for good this time, another consequence of his mistake that he has no choice but to endure and face.

HOW TO DISAPPEAR (2) :
A FAIRYTALE THE KIDS WILL LOVE
THERE are no stops from oklahoma to arizona, save for the occasional snack and bathroom breaks.
you managed to nap for the greater part of the sixteen hour trip, but two-bit’s eyelids start to sag at about 11:30 at night, leaving the task of convincing a determined, cranky keith mathews to turn in for the night, to you.
“two, there’s a motel up ahead— just pull over.”
“that’s...not a motel. the sign says ‘OTEL.’” keith mathews is damn near falling asleep.
“keith, i’ll be damned if i die in a stolen corvair in the middle of who-fucking-knows, arizona. pull.over.”
he turns sharply into the dark parking lot outside of the one story complex, lit only by a single flickering lamppost and the dying red glow of the sign.
you’re out of the car barely before its stopped moving, and you look back at two bit, still unmoving, expectantly.
two bit turns to you, his gaze slowly sobering and alert.
“well, here we are. ready to dig into our savings so you can die at a glorified haunted, cockroach-infested sex rendezvous? you’re right, it suits you better.”
you roll your eyes as he slowly steps out of the car, locking the door as he does. you can only think that if somebody did try to steal two-bit’s beat up junker, they probably needed it more.
the motel lobby smells of cigarettes and fry grease the moment two-bit opens the door. dust lies caked over the top of a barely-standing small wooden bookcase, and the room is truly topped off by the stain variety on couch.
all is quickly explained at the sight of the concierge. He’s an older man, the white hair on his head quickly vacating, and he looks like he could be in his mid-fifties if life as a skeevy motel attendant hadn’t aged him so much. he might be 5’8 and intimidating if his back wasn't so crooked and his shoulders not hung so loose.
two-bit remains unfazed as he approaches the counter, and you follow close behind.
“a room please,” he asks.
the man remains aloof as he licks the pad of his index finger to flip the page of an old magazine.
“double or single beds?”
you’re almost flattered that he didn’t automatically assume you were an escort, or here to fuck two-bit mathews. you chime in anyway.
“two singles.”
he sighs, still not making eye contact. “damn shame, i’ve only got doubles.”
he looks up for the first time, eyes shifting between the two of you.
“unless you’d like to bunk with some other folks,” he flashes his teeth in what looks to be a half-smile. “I know a couple tenants who wouldn’t mind…guests.” he wheezes when he laughs.
keith shoots you a side glance before doubling down.
“a double’s fine.”
the man turns his focus back onto the magazine, but still reaches a limp arm under his desk to grab a key.
“do make sure to pay tomorrow morning. i’m a greasy hick with a gun, and prison sounds like a nice vacation from the place i’ve got,” his smile is half threatening as he wheezes.
you both turn towards the door, gripping the handle when he speaks again.
“and young man,” he swallows hard, serious this time. “clean up after yourself….maid only comes once a week.”
it’s two-bit’s turn to roll his eyes as he holds the door for you, sharing in your disgusted look as you leave the lobby behind.
“you know what, two? i liked him.”
he chuckles half heartedly.
“you would, it’s that same taste in men that got your mixed up with dallas tucker winston.”
the thought of teasing dallas makes you smile and you nudge keith’s shoulder.
“you shouldn’t be speaking ill of the dead.”
you know it’s a mistake as soon as you say it, and two-bit stops in his tracks, turning to you.
“he’s not dead. we’re gonna’ fucking find him, alright?”
he keeps on walking, frustrated, but his words pin you to the ground.
“keith, wait—,” you call out to him, and he turns toward you from a few feet away.
you glance at the motel two blocks down the road.
“you want to get a drink?”
he breathes deeply, burying his face in his hands. “we’ve got a long day tomorrow, we shouldn’t.”
you put on your best “kicked puppy, pity-me” expression, which most greasy girls never did, and most greasy guys never fell for, but it always worked on two-bit, when it came to you.
he bridges the gap between you two, caving.
“just one.”
———————
your vision is hazy, speech-slurred, as you and two mumble incoherently on the walk toward your shared room. his arm is fixed around your shoulders as you help keep his balance, the only thing stopping him from plunging to the asphalt.
the door is unlocked, and neither of you is sober enough to assess the dangerous implications of that fact. instead you only lock the door behind you and crash onto the double bed you’d booked, which had caused an uproar at the front desk earlier, but was now starting to look very promising.
you feel a heavy weight on your chest, but still manage to worm onto your side to look at two-bit.
even with his eyelids heavy and hair tousled from a late night of drinking, he wasn’t hard to look at by any means. he was at least six feet tall, his shoulders broad and sturdy. for most greasy girls you knew, he was a total catch.
but looking at him now, your head foggy and dream-like, you notice the way his features move softly with each of his expressions, not quite as angular as dallas’s were. are. the conflict between the two tenses is almost enough to make your eyes mist over.
when your vision refocuses, you notice he’s staring back at you, too. he’s your best friend. you begin to wonder what would happen if—
you come together slowly, his hand moving to cup your face, warm and supportive. his lips are on yours and the kiss is chaste and innocent. much different from what you’d prefer, perhaps in a different situation, with someone else.
you both stare at each other quizzically for a moment once you’ve released each other.
“no,” he says after a few seconds, shaking his head and turning back to face the ceiling.
“agreed.” you shift to sit cross-legged on the bed. “i think you need more practice.”
he looks up at you, nose scrunched in mock offense.
“i’ve had plenty of practice.”
“you kissed me, hotshot.” your eyes narrow as you stifle a laugh. “i don’t think we should sleep in the same bed, frankly.”
“agreed,” he retorts, and with a single pulse of strength, shoves you off the bed and onto the carpet. you land with a thump. “i think you should take the floor.”
“did you just knock a lady on her ass, keith mathews?”
his laugh is quiet and child-like as he apologetically moves over to make space for you on the mattress. “fine. but no funny business, got it?”
you just roll your eyes and crawl under the covers beside him, finally flicking off the lamp’s assaulting yellow light.
“you’re all of i’ve got,” he says after a pause, cutting through the silence.
‘i love you’ goes unsaid, but echoes throughout the room regardless.
———————
all sleep is uneasy when you’re dating a dead boy.
you pull the sheets off your body and swing your legs off of the bed, not too worried about waking two-bit. he was a deep sleeper.
you grab a lighter from two’s jean pocket, and take a few smokes from the pack lying on the vanity.
there are no signs of life in the motel parking lot in front of your room, save for the occasional wind chill.
your mind is never yours at four in the morning.
it always belongs to them.
when you close your eyes, leaning against the concrete wall, you can almost see johnny cade. you remember the way he smiled, his jacket loose on his shoulders, purple-black bruises on the high points of his cheeks.
sometimes you still found yourself looking over your shoulder, a habit from when you had to check to make sure johnny was still there, behind you.
the next gust of wind reminds you of dallas.
you feel the ghost of his long, pale fingers tracing the length of your spine, drumming on your shoulders when you’d lie on his chest, tugging at your hair.
you only open your eyes when the cigarette burns out, and it’s dim light is replaced by the burning gaze of two very familiar eyes, from the alley across the street.
ashing your cigarette on the wall, you turn back toward the room, your fingers only grazing the handle when a hand flies over your mouth, stifling the instinctual scream.
in the window, a harrowing reflection.
a pale-faced girl and her dead ex boyfriend.

Chloe’s Last Straw
Synopsis:
Chloe is guilty of many things in her life. But not this. Never this. So when her mother says something unforgivable to a person she'd usually consider an enemy, it's up to her to put things right. Grab your popcorn folks, and get ready for a roasting. Written for Blackout Tuesday.
..............................
Caline Bustier sighed in exasperation, wondering how her once promising career as an educator had stuck her with this… the most ill-disciplined, out-of-control bunch of students she’d ever had to guide since her formative years as a kindergarten coordinator.
But even those young rapscallions had some level of respect for their elders, whereas the current batch of alleged ‘maturer’ teens…
They couldn’t even raise their heads for role-call in the morning.
“Max! Stop playing with that flying toy this second ! Mylene, Ivan… you can kiss each other during recess! Return to your desks now ! Nathanael! Put down those pencils and listen to me! Lila, I know you said you suffer from ADHD, but until I see a doctor’s note, I expect you to respond immediately when I call your name! Honestly, it’s like trying to herd cats! And where on Earth are…”
“I’m here! I’m here!!” As if in answer to her request, Adrien Agreste bustled in just then, out-of-breath and apparently with a ready-made excuse to explain his absence. “Dawn fashion shoot… then piano recital… early morning practice… stop me falling behind. A-Apologies Miss Bustier… you know how it is with my father…”
“Hmm, yes… I’m afraid I do .” The frowning teacher gave an understanding nod, for Gabriel Agreste’s huge expectations for his son often led to constant late arrivals for his son. “I would say ‘try not to let it happen again’, but something tells me it’s out of my hands. Oh well, at least you haven’t missed any actual lesson time this week. Go and sit down, please. Now I wonder where…”
“ Argh ! S-Sorry Miss! Mom got sick… and usually she handles the morning deliveries… so I had to take a quick detour on my way here… and…” bang
At least, that’s the sound effect there would’ve been, if a stumbling Marinette Dupain-Cheng hadn’t been caught by Adrien on her inevitable descent to the floor. Right place, right time.
Still didn’t stop her blushing like a stoplight though.
“A-Adrien!! Gulp. H-Hi. ” The blunette gave a passable impression of a fish out of water.
“Hey there! F-Funny the places we run into each other, isn’t it?” Adrien seemed equally struck for what he wanted to say.
“ Ahem !” That was the sound of an impatient teacher, who obviously had no romance in her soul and was eager to restart the headcount. “If you two are quite finished with your impromptu act, you can save it for the talent show next month. Take your respective seats so we can get on. Wait…”
Glancing at Adrien And Marinette’s chairs had revealed something unprecedented in the recent history of this hallowed halls of education. In fact, so unbelievable was it, Miss Bustier had to rub her eyes twice just to make sure what she saw wasn’t just another product of her espresso-infused imagination.
For it would appear as though young Agreste and Dupain-Cheng, by some measure the most tardy pupils Caline Bustier had ever known, were not among the last ones to arrive that incredible day.
No, that dubious honor belonged to none other than the students the aforementioned pair shared a desk with, namely Nino Lahiffe and Alya Cesaire.
W-What the… the panicking teacher’s look of astonishment was completely forgivable, as both Marinette and Adrien made good their escape. I’ve never known anything like this to happen before. It’s most unlike them. I just hope they’re okay. Maybe, if they’re not here soon, I should ask the headmaster if…
Miss Bustier’s short soliloquy was interrupted by an unpleasant shrieking noise as a familiar pair strode in. The high-pitched noise made the hairs on her neck stand on end and shattered the formerly serene atmosphere of the classroom once and for all.
“ Dahling . You know I wouldn’t go back to New York without saying goodbye to my precious Coraline, don’t you sweetheart? I might be away for quite a while this time, even past Christmas, but you understand, right? If I’m not there to personally introduce my new range of spangly negligees to the world at Fashion Week, my competitors might steal my thunder! I might even be bumped off the front page of Vogue! And you remember what I’ve told you every day, since the blessed occasion you were born, whenever that was…”
“Yes, mother. ‘If you’re not somebody, then you’re nobody.’ I get it. But do you ‘get’: my name isn’t ‘Coraline’, it’s Chloe . Coraline is that so-called kids movie we saw years ago, the one that was so scary I nearly wet… you know what, n-never mind.”
The loud screech of Audrey Bourgeois’s voice was almost enough to give poor Miss Bustier a migraine, as if the prospect of trying to teach her disruptive daughter good manners wasn’t difficult enough. Why did this have to be the one day I forgot to bring my aspirin to class with me? Tell me, what did I do to deserve this? Did I walk under a ladder yesterday? Did I crack a mirror, or step on a gypsy’s foot by mistake? Please, if I am cursed for whatever reason, let me know how I can fix it. For the love of…
“Mrs Bourgeois! What an unple… u-unexpected pleasure!” The rapidly unraveling teacher put on her fakest, friendliest face to welcome the surprise guest. “How are you? When was the last time we met? I seem to recall it was at the salon…”
“What was that? Who is this strange person heckling me, dear?” Audrey pulled down her shades to stare closer, as Chloe whispered in her mom’s ear. “Oh yes, your public school educator. Still with the red hair I see, ugh . Yes, I remember… I told her to dye her roots blonde like me if she wanted a better job than the impossible task of instructing these degenerates. Because as we all know: ‘blondes have more fun’. Isn’t that right, Chlorine?”
Whether Chloe was still sore from Audrey getting her name wrong twice now, or just plain embarrassed by her female parent’s condescending behavior, who knows. She didn’t repeat her mother’s mantra again like last time though, and instead stood there nervously with her hands in her chino pockets, portraying quite an un-Chloe lack of confidence.
“Well anyway, if you simply must know Miss… Bustier, was it?” An uninterested Audrey inquired, proving the rumor true that her daughter’s name was the only one she regularly forgot. “I was just seeing my precious off, before catching the afternoon plane to uptown New York. It’s just wonderful there in the summer, with all the glitterati in attendance for the various functions. You really must try it, darling… oh sorry I forgot: on your meager salary, it might prove to be an impossible dream. Still, we can’t all be as ridiculously wealthy as me and my husband, can we?”
“Y-Yes, I suppose so.” Miss Bustier desperately kept her sentences as short as possible. She didn’t want the dreadful woman to stay there a second longer than absolutely necessary. “W-Well, I don’t want to keep you, if you have things you need to…”
“So, these are the local children you go to school with, dear?” Deciding she was tired with Miss Bustier’s ‘rambling’, a bored Audrey fixed a critical eye over the classroom. “Well, I must say, I’ve seen far better. A poor crop if ever there was one… why your father refused to let you be privately educated is beyond me. I suspect it’s because he wants to boost his election prospects by letting you ‘mingle with the common folk’, but is it really worth it? I hate to think the effect such distasteful surroundings must be having on your delicate young mind.”
Outraged gasps erupted from all around the room, and if Chloe could’ve jumped into a fifty-foot hole never to emerge, she likely would’ve done so with relish. Alas, this was not an option, and so once more the twitching girl was forced to deal with the consequences of her mother’s shameless arrogance and total lack of volume control.
But just as even the usually docile Miss Bustier was about to say something stronger to defend her visibly irritated students, the last two attendees emerged through the door, puffing and panting as they arrived at long last. Also noticeably, covered in what can only be described as black oil stains.
First up was Nino Lahiffe, who paused slightly to catch his breath and adjust his cap. Then came his girlfriend Alya Cesaire just behind, who despite being pretty exhausted herself, began to speak “N-Nino’s dad gave us a lift, but the car broke down. We had to help him fix it…”
Suddenly Audrey Bourgeois, obviously on a roll, glanced behind her with a pronounced sneer. Upon seeing the pair in question, her expression of disapproval grew even more pronounced…
And what she said next was truly shocking. Except, maybe not her.
“Who might these ‘people’ be, then? While I think it’s laudable you’ll let just about anyone into these types of schools Bustier, I hope you realize some individuals can’t be taught. Just look at those hopeless youths, for example. Obviously from a rough neighborhood, probably down to one parent each, deprived of everything to judge by their filthy clothing, and they can’t even be in class on time. Probably wasting their lives on the street listening to ‘wrap’ music, or whatever it’s called. As if this sort even need an education, in their future careers as minimum wage cleaners or drug-dealers. Really dear, you’d be better off kicking them out and investing in school uniforms instead…”
“ That’s enough !!”
Stunned faces all around. Jaws dropping to the floor. A few people on the verge of fainting, at the identity of the person who uttered those two screamed words.
It wasn’t Miss Bustier, who was prepared to declare her response by more physical means (a hard fist to the face of an unrepentant bigoted snob, if you must know).
Not Alya, who looked just about ready to burst into tears, being held by her apoplectic boyfriend  in his arms (otherwise, he might’ve formed an unstoppable tag-team with his teacher to kick some serious a**).
The surprise shouter was none other than Chloe Bourgeois, who having finally been pushed to her absolute limit at her mother’s complete lack of respect for anyone besides her own reflection, had finally snapped.
And boy, was it something to behold.
“Mom, as I’m sure anyone who isn’t you would agree, I’ve put up with a lot over the years. The insults. The dirty looks. Long absences. Always getting my name wrong. Never telling me you love me. Raising me to think ‘sacking’ anyone who disagrees with you is permissible behavior. I can tolerate all this and more, but there is one thing where I must draw the line. You want to know what that is?”
“ Must we get into this now, dear? You know I like first pick of the best VIP seats…” There Mrs Bourgeois went again, thinking this was just another conversation where she could brush off her daughter’s genuine concerns.
Well, in this case, she was about to get ‘schooled’ (pun not intended).
“Well, I’m going to tell you anyway. It’s racism Mom, plain and simple, and I won’t stand for it! Whatever problems I might’ve had with Alya and Nino in the past, and believe me there’s been plenty, I’ve never treated them differently due to the color of their skin! How shallow can you get?! And coming from me, this is the biggest of big deals!”
It was as if someone had lit a fuse underneath Audrey’s designer shoes, as the formerly unflappable woman suddenly recoiled in shock. “W-What… well I never ! How could you say such terrible things to me, Chlorophyll? Why, if you weren’t my own flesh and blood, I’d sue you on the spot! I’ll have you know, some of my best workers are blac…”
“Yeah, ‘workers’. You just made my point for me. That’s all they are to you, aren’t they? I’ve seen the way you treat them differently to even our other staff, calling them ‘tanned’ and ‘colored’ right to their faces. They don’t say anything because they don’t want to lose their jobs, and shamefully neither do I because frankly, you scare me sometimes. Well, that ends this second . The instant you behave that way again, I’ll be on you like a ton of bricks. Also, do you wanna know something else?”
“H-Huh?” Audrey’s demeanor had abruptly switched from coolness personified to utter confusion. Being called out so blatantly in front of a bunch of ‘underprivileged ragamuffins’ by her petulant child was not on the itinerary today.
“I’ll spoil it for you again. Father hates your attitude even more than I do! Whenever you finish treating the staff like the dirt under your feet, he goes to each one in turn to apologize personally. As well as give them a few extra euros that month, as if that’ll make up for the abuse they have to suffer. But look who I’m talking to! The woman who thinks Chinese and Japanese people are practically the same! And people wonder where I got such a stupid idea from…”
‘I-I…” For the first time in her life, Mrs Bourgeois was completely lost for words. All she could do was stare dumbly and numbly at her irrepressible daughter, as the young girl finished her extended lecture with a flourish.
“Finally, I suppose I should let you know about the head cook at our hotel. You know, the one who you think makes the best meals around for Daddy and his clients at short notice? Or when you have to entertain people, and she puts on a spread that’ll put any other caterer in the city to shame? That’s Mrs Cesaire, the mother of Alya over there. How do you think she’s going to feel, when she hears you racially insulted her daughter so terribly in front of her entire class? I don’t know, but if I were you I’d check my food for signs of saliva for a while. Also, put your lawyers on stand-by, because I think it may be heading for court. And if you want to know who’s side I’ll be on, here’s a clue…”
At this juncture, Chloe put her mouth to her now trembling mother’s ear to whisper sharply:
“...It won’t be yours!”
That was all it took for Mrs Audrey Bourgeois to collapse on the floor, in such a comatose state that not even the strongest smelling salts around could revive her in the foreseeable future.
...Not that anyone really wanted to do that, of course. Even the school nurse balked at helping someone who’d been so vile to the innocent students there. So, in an unconscious heap on the floor she stayed.
In the end, she missed her flight and the free expensive champagne on offer. Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.
As for Chloe, having said her piece and blithely sauntered over to her seat next to Sabrina afterwards, she was most surprised by the deafening cheer that subsequently erupted, as well as the much better treatment she got for an entire week afterwards by everyone present (even from Marinette).
As unusual as her newfound popularity was though…
She could quite easily get used to it.
If only she could master this whole ‘being nice’ thing.
..............................
AUTHOR’S NOTE: Remember everyone, having White Privilege isn’t just about paying lip service to the concerns of minorities and posting black squares and hashtags one Tuesday to show you care…
It’s about using your advantageous platform all year round to speak up to defend those in need, whoever they are. After all. if activism was just listening to others whilst doing precisely nothing to change the world outside the confines of social media, how are we gonna change the world?
Food for thought. Hope you enjoyed the story, which (I hope) got the point across well enough. Whatever you think, let me know… and thanks for reading! :)
