#this explained electrical circuits to me

The Batfam as getting called to the principal office?
[in the hallway]
Bruce: Explain. Now.
Duke: Well, it all started when I kinda-sorta-not-accidentally started a food fight by using a hamburger as a hackey sack.
Damian: And he roped me into it by insulting my honor.
Steph: He just called you short. Get over it, pipsqueak.
Bruce: Why are you here?
Steph: Duke called for backup after Damian made a napkin sword, so I brought it.
Cass: I'm backup.
Tim: And the car you stole to get here was mine.
Bruce: Okay, what about you, Dick?
Dick: The school got your voicemail so they called me, but then I needed to use the bathroom and flooded it. It was an accident!
Bruce: And Jason?
Jason: Missing assignments.
The principal: Mr. Wayne?
Bruce: That's me.
The principal: These are all your children?
Bruce: Apparently.
The principal: I see. Please step into my office.
[later that afternoon]
The principal: Welcome to detention. All of you will do as you're told and there will be no talking.n
The principal: Mr. Thomas, you must compose a three-page essay on why you should not play with your food.
The principal: Mr. Wayne junior, you must come up with ten appropriate responses to teasing that don't involve physical escalation.
The principal: Miss Brown, you must give a speech on why stealing cars is wrong.
The principal: Miss Cain, you must stand in the corner until I tell you to come out.
The principal: Mr. Drake, you must read and sign the contracts that you were hiding in your car to avoid.
The principal: Mr. Grayson, you must help the janitor scrub the bathrooms.
The principal: Mr. Todd, you must write a book report on To Kill A Mockingbird, build an electrical circuit, debate a current event, and complete pages one through thirty of your algebra workbook.
The principal: And Mr. Wayne senior, you must come up to the chalkboard and write a hundred lines saying you are a grown man and will not pretend to be Batman.

ghoul
ghoul you keep hitting the mark on every one of my kinks
monstrous size differences, seeing ur person as holy, ovul-
its like ur in my brain get out of there before u see something that starts turning these rough military men into men that fear what i want to do to them (the erotica of cyborgs, mechs and their maintenance handler just DOES something to me. someone just turning my screws and fixing my internal wires while i look down at them feeling up my most vulnerable parts. my engineer knowing every external and internal piece of me, my repairman knowing exactly which metal plates are bothering me and which screws need to be tightened more often and which parts i won’t say need fixing but he knows, i want to be known wholly and entirely by someone who can fix me and make me into their own theseus’ ship)
The eroticism of the machine.... thinking about android!Ghost....
He always seems to be hanging around when you're working on other droids or laboring with mechs. He checks over various weapons while you sit crosslegged on the tiled floor surrounded by neatly organized plates and screws. You can feel his eyes on you, but every time you look up at him, he's studying a trigger switch or tipping a gun barrel this way and that. You try to keep your attention on the open chest cavity in front of you. Your fingers trail over wires and trace circuits, looking for the too tight screws and miss-laid paths. It's delicate work, work that takes years of practice to get good at even with natural skill.
You twist to check the diagnostics window running on your bulky tablet, the cords running between it and one of your favorite droids humming with electric life. Binary flickers over the screen, replaced by strings of code as the machine parses and translates subroutines and operating systems. You squint at the glowing green letters, eyes flicking through code as you push your finger against the screen to scroll back up. You lean closer to the open cavity, flick your safety goggles down as you turn your attention back to your hands.
"I don't want to have to shut you down," You tell the droid, "So let me know if your servos start locking up." The droid gives you a thumbs up from their position on the floor.
"Isn't it safer shuttin' 'em down?" Ghost hums from the other side of the room. You ignore him, flicking the spark on your torch until it lights. You need to rewire the auxiliary movement board for the right leg, maybe reprogram the routines that are making it twitchy. You doubt anyone else noticed this bot starting to drag its foot when it walked, but you did.
"Five doesn't like being shut off," You explain, heating the metal connecting the wires to their "hip", "Says the lost time cuts productivity." Which is as close as you've ever heard a bot get to expressing an opinion. Even then saying they don't "like" being shut off is a stretch. Machines don't "like" or "dislike" anything, they simply are. You prod at the loosened wires with a pair of tweezers, pulling them from their places and examining the frayed ends. Definitely need replacing.
"Suppose I can understand that," Ghost grumbles. Again you ignore him. You don't know what he's doing, trying to bait you into a conversation or engage your curiosity, two things you can't afford when you're doing detail work. You solder the other end of the wires, rolling your shoulders to try and get some of the tightness out of them. You really should work on your posture, you're sure you look like a shrimp curled over your work, but you need the leverage.
You sit back, inspecting the freed wires, mentally tallying their length and checking the screen readouts. You set about snipping and stripping new lengths of wire, push a few buttons on your little screen, and feel your shoulders hike up to your ears as you lean to get the new parts installed. You think part of your fascination with machines comes from how repairable they are. You've long since come to terms with the fact that detaching your shoulders and giving them a good scrub down isn't actually possible. Not unless you want to look into cybernetics for yourself, and with the grade of parts the military offers you think you're better off eu natural.
"Still good five?" You ask, soldering in the new wires, you glance at the screen, watching the routines for speech zip across the green.
"Yes."
You smile to yourself. It looks like everything is running normally up top, that's reassuring. You weren't sure if this was a systematic issue or a parts issue, never know 100% until you open up whoever you're working on. You mentally scroll through your project list as you run the wires from the metal "hip" to the central data column. You scratch your tweezers against a bit of flashing, frowning. That shouldn't be there. You wave your torch over the distorted metal, and trying to find the defect. You hear a soft 'click, click, click' like nails flicking against each other as you heat the area.
You're jerked back by your collar as the bot jerks, its defensive system snapping like a bear trap over its open chest. Your heart hammers in your chest, your tools still tightly clenched in your hands, and your breath coming quick with adrenaline fueled fear. Ghost hauls you up to your feet like picking up a kitten, all titanium and inhuman strength getting you to standing. He leaves you to swipe the repair pad from the floor, the wires stringing it to the android shredded as cleanly as your neck would have been.
"Still stubborn enough to get yourself killed," He grumbles, shaking his head, the red glow of his cameras seems almost disappointed under the white skull paint. He tosses you the pad and you fumble to catch it. "Inter-system problem, shut 'em down." It's an order, his voice carrying all the authority it should as your superior officer.
You nod quickly, swallow some of the dryness in your mouth, and punch new numbers onto your little computer. "Um, thanks," You manage, watching him re-assemble his rifle with practices precision.
"Don't mention it." He replies, and you get the feeling he means that as an order too. Don't mention it, don't go spreading around that he saved your neck. Don't try to thank him again and he shoulders the rifle and pushes past you out of the landing bay.

sweater weather;

and now, so let me hold both your hands in the holes of my sweater
he doesn’t like cats.
much to his dismay, you’re bending down and cooing at the little kitten that curls up against your ankle. it has got soft blue eyes which reflect innocence. you run your fingers through its black fur, picking the small animal up. he likes the soft smile on your face. it fills his chest with a warm fuzzy feeling he can’t explain. neither can he explain why his heart skips a few beats when he notices the twinkling in your eyes. it almost makes him drown into a frenzy of warmth.
‘can we keep her?’ you ask. there’s something in your voice that sends sparks of electricity down his spine. it’s as if he’s known you his whole life. he doesn’t want to say no, but he can’t help it. he digs the edge of his boot on the loose gravel of the path. twirling around the loops grocery packet between his fingers, he whispers, scared to let the joy in your eyes leave.
‘no,’ he tries to predict your reaction, but fails to. surely the joy in your eyes melts, but the hope doesn’t. from what he knows about you, he knows you’re a stubborn person who stands their ground. you always get your way around in some way or the other. but you’re also a people pleaser. you hate it when you’ve to truly go against somebody’s wishes to do something you want.
so, he watches as you wrap the little kitten between the folds flannel you’re wearing. there’s a mischievous glint in your eyes, a small smirk between the curve of your smile. it’s the same one you wear when you read something mildly suggestive in your books.
‘please, sirius,’ you drawl. the kitten mewls from the folds of the fabric, her eyes glinting the same mischief as yours do. he feels his breath palpitate when you move closer, putting the face of the kitten closer to his.
‘look she wants to come with us too, that’s why she’s mewing,’ you justify. he gulps slowly, his barrier of rigidity slowly breaking. he feels his thoughts melt when he stares at your lips. even though he’s never touched them before, he suddenly thinks he knows them. he feels he can carve every shape, every curve of your body with his eyes closed.
‘okay,’ he gulps. you squeal, a quiet sound from your lips.
he thinks it’s melody to his ears.
*-
‘sirius!’ you shout across the room. your kitten, binx, is curled across your chest, purring away silently as you rub your fingers through her fur. you’re laying down, your feet thrown across the sofa, letting the nail paint on your toes dry. the mild winter allows a soft sunbeam to peek through the windows.
‘what?’ he asks, coming out of his door. he has nothing but a towel wrapped around his narrow waist. several tattoos are inked upon his porcelain skin with happy trail on his abdomen which traces down, leaving less to imagination. his hair is wet and droplets of water trace down his defined pectorals. while you’d been living with him for nearly 8 months now, you’d definitely never seen him shirtless. it makes your chest fill with a strange warmth. it makes your brain short circuit for a moment when he smiles, walking towards you.
‘like what you see?’ he teases, wiggling his eyebrow. you gulp slowly, before you regain your composure.
‘i can’t hear you over the loud music,’ you say, getting up. binx falls on your lap, and she scratches your arms with her nails.
‘hey hey, calm down little woman!’ sirius says, noticing her scratching you. he takes her into her arms, her little paws trying to scratch at a surface.
‘don’t do that to your mum,’ he says, looking into her eyes. she stops fidgeting for a bit, before she mews loudly throwing her paws on his chest and leaving a long scratch across it. it digs deep into his skin, letting out blood.
‘binx! you naughty menace!’ you scold as she scurries off, jumping from sirius’ hold.
‘asshole,’ he murmurs, grasping his wound.
‘i’ll patch it up for you,’ you say.
*-
‘do you trust me?’ you ask, holding the cotton soaked with the antiseptic with a pair of tweezers. you’re standing in between his thighs. he’s wearing nothing but grey sweatpants, being overly dramatic for the scratch on his chest. while you think it’s adorable, you’re sure it’s just for the shits and giggles.
‘i do, but i feel like I shouldn’t?’ he answers, grinning mischievously. he likes your form between his legs he thinks. it makes him go feral, you looking down at him while you fix his wounds. it makes his imagination go wild. the idea of you touching him while he’s half naked thrills something inside his stomach.
you slap him across his shoulder. it’s a soft playful blow and he laughs. his hands suddenly grip your waist, as he pulls you closer, almost mushing his face with your breasts. he watches the breath get stuck on your throat, as you wet your lip, tongue slowly darting out over your lower lips. you’re unconsciously leaning over his face, soaking the cotton ball into his blood.
he sneers as a soft burning pain grows, and his fingers dig deeper into your waist. you unconsciously arch your hips towards him, your hands falling on shoulder. the tension grows, and the heartbeats palpitate between the both of you. there’s a look of dreaminess in your eyes he’s never seen before. he thinks it makes him weak in the knees. you trail your fingernail on a tattoo, before rubbing the antiseptic on his wound.
your breaths are ragged when you finally close his wound with a patch. your job was done, you’d move away. you should move away. but his touch burns into your soul, but it isn’t enough. it feels familiar on your skin, yet so unfamiliar. you lean closer unconsciously as if from muscle memory. you cradle his face, your noses rubbing-
a loud noise of shattering glass distracts you. you pull apart, a flustered look on your face. heat occupies your skin as you crumble into a shell of embarrassment. he lets go of your waist, and you stutter,
‘binx- the little fucking minx-‘you say, before you run off.
*-
you’re carrying a cup of coffee in your hand, running late for your job. a piece of toast hangs from your lips, and you’re running around the house, trying to find your tie.
‘you can wear mineeeee,’ sirius drawls, closing the battered copy of ‘the picture of dorian gray’.
‘i could if you gave it to me!’ you shout, swallowing the last piece of the butter smothered bread.
‘you’ve a nice swallow game, i see,’ he muses. you groan, gulping down the last bit of your bitter coffee.
‘that’s a really bad one!’ you say, tucking your shirt into your trousers. screaming internally, you realize you can’t find your belt either. sirius enters his room, seemingly searching for his tie.
‘can you give me a belt too?’ you ask, hurrying off behind him. binx runs in front of your feet, and in an attempt to not fall on her, you fall on the floor with a thump, followed by sirius who trips on you.
his locks tickle your face, his grey eyes staring into yours with an intensity which reminds you a memory you never had. it’s a minor flash, something of a haze like dream, but you remember it so clearly. your breathing rages, hotness searing through you as his scent and warmth looms over you. there’s a glint in his eyes you can’t decipher, but your memory has it engrained. as if you’ve seen it a thousand times.
‘i like it when you’re under me,’ he whispers. it’s a low rasp, one you’ve never heard before, yet it ignites something in you.
something that excites you.
*-
he’s fleeing when he receives your call. your voice was a timid whisper when you’d called him, laced with fear. he hated it, he hated how it sounded. but when he arrives at the bar, he finds you completely safe, surrounded by your friends. you’re chatting happily, your skin flushed with the alcohol that renders through your body. he’s perplexed, till one of your friends spot him. she bats her eyelashes at you, whistling as he walks towards you.
‘what happened?’ he asks. he holds your fingers, gripping them tight. he’s trying to read through your emotions. he’s trying to read you through the happy smile and shining eyes. but he’s too distracted by how happy you look.
‘it wasz a prankh!’ you cheer happily, your drunk state rendering your words.
‘seriously?’ he asks, rolling his eyes. he’s smiling, he can’t help it. you laugh,
‘yess!’ you try to stand up, but trip on your heels instead. he holds you closer, letting you support your weight on him.
‘you’ve had too much to drink,’ he scolds. you gaze at him happily, your hormones getting the best of you.
‘i know!’ you exclaim, feeling the collywobbles consume you as his scent tantalizes into your senses.
‘don’t you think we should leave?’ he asks.
‘should we?’
‘yes,’ he says, pulling you closer. his fingers dig into your skin, feeling your touch. it calms his nerves. still, he needs to hold you closer, to feel you, to know you’re safe.
‘okay i’ll go. will you take me home?’ you ask, an innocence provoked in your voice. he feels himself melt, scarring him and his memories.
‘i’ll do. i’ll always take you home.’
*-
the stars are shining bright on the dark sky. you’ve his leather jacket wrapped around your form, as he holds you close. you reek of alcohol, but he doesn’t mind it. it’s infused distinctly with your perfume, and he finds his comfort in it.
‘hi,’ you say, wrapping your arm across his waist, pulling him closer. he presses a kiss on your hair, breathing you in. it’s perplexing, the burning emotions you let flee in his chest. the warmth he feels with your presence.
‘hi,’ he whispers back. there’s a glazed look in your eyes. he knows it. he remembers it. it reflects him, and he feels as if there’s no one in the world but you and him. his heart beats raggedly, and he’s afraid it’ll pop out of his chest, when you lean closer to him, pressing a soft kiss on his jaw.
‘you’re so beautiful,’ you say, snuggling against him. your heels click against the loose gravel of the path. it’s a moment of softness he wants to cherish forever.
‘but you’re hurting me…so much. i wish i could kiss you. i wish i could hold you like this forever. i wish i could keep you close with me, just for me,’ you ramble.
‘then why don’t you?’ he asks, his fingers cradling your jaw.
‘you’ll kiss me?’ he looks down at you, his eyes scanning your features. the cold air waves over your hair, and he holds your face between his hands. his fingers ghost over your lips. you lean into his hand, as he presses a soft peck on your chin.
‘i’ll do, when you’re sober,’ he promises.

Fic Rec List - Daniel/Max
if your fic is on this list and you dont want it to be, please let us know and we will remove it immediately, no questions asked. we have contacted most of the authors on this list, but sometimes people fall through the gaps - just pop us a message🤍
have a pairing you want us to do next? please read the faqs and then head to the inbox.
don’t forget to give the authors featured on this list some love in the form of kudos, bookmarks, and comments!
We've had a couple of Maxiel related asks recently so thought this was the perfect time to get a general list together! :)
nsfw: give, give, take by hungerpunch and thermocline | E | 3.7k
PWP in which transmasc Max tops Daniel for the first time. This PWP is so hot your circuit board may be in danger, fair warning. The characterisations and dialogue are great, Daniel with terrible "sexy" lines and Max a little surprised but very willing to give it to Daniel when he asks for it. I really like how Max's (probably pretty understandable) expectations of Daniel are subverted by the request.
Daniel props himself up on a forearm, cradling his chin in his hand. “Maybe, but—” he affects what he probably thinks is a sultry moue. “—when are you gonna get me on your strap, though?” Max can’t help the way his eyes widen. They’ve been fucking long enough that he supposes it’s not weird of Daniel to ask, but normally the type of men he attracts aren't as… self-possessed about busting it open. He goes from vaguely tired and mellow to wide awake and horny in less than a second; his body suddenly more electricity than muscle. "Uhh," he thinks aloud, his mouth buffering a beat slower than his brain, "... now?"
wish you away in my dreams by @vicsy | M | 7.5k
This is a stunning story, that, through the medium of Max and Daniel's relationship, examines the concept of fear, loss, and misplaced emotions. Everything this writer shares is stunning, but I particularly loved the use of imagery in this one. Beautiful!
Before him, Daniel’s form is incandescent in a golden glimmer, his unruly curls illuminated like a halo around his head. It pulls a punched-out breath out of Max’s lungs. He’ll rip the reconciliation from out of his soul if he has to, he’ll race it to the end, do what he does best, not a drop of fear tipping the scales against him this time.
nsfw: Through the Ages by Bells33 and Whippasnappa | E | 9k
A beautiful examination of Daniel and Max over the years, from 2017 to 2023. Brilliant writing and incredible graphics are interspersed with facts and figures, and it makes for a truly special read.
And here’s the thing; when Daniel laughs, it makes Max laugh too. So they’re laughing, and Daniel is helping Max extricate himself from the table where it’s folded in a bit and grabbed him like a snappy crocodile. And then there’s just this fucking moment where Max is finally upright, they’re stood way too close, inches apart, and he’s still holding on to Max’s arms for some reason. They're the same height, now. Daniel can’t remember when that happened. One moment, he’d been taller than Max. And now, Max meets him directly eye to eye.
nsfw: tender is my heart by @missyourflight | E | 10.6k
This is a Never Let Me Go AU. Daniel works in a cafe by sea. One day, a man walks in and orders a meal. Daniel can tell there is something strange about him, but isn't sure quite what. Eventually, he learns that Max is a clone, created to be an organ donor. This fic is atmospheric, sad, and explores the horrific ethics of the situation Max has been born into. He has been conditioned since birth to accept and embrace his fate - that one day, his organs will be harvested and he will die so that others may live. Daniel is horrified but is fighting against a lifetime of indoctrination to make Max see why.
“Because I thought you were a fucking – closeted Mormon, not –” “I told you I was a donor, you could have asked me to explain, you could have asked me –” “Explain it now, then!” Daniel explodes. “Fucking go on and tell me, Max, I’m all ears.” When Mr Gianpiero had explained it to them, before he was sent away from Hailsham, he’d said, not unkindly and quite clearly, so they understood, “You’re not people, not legally. Your bodies are not your own.” And he’d told them the truth, about the donations. About how long they’d get. “It’s what I’m for,” Max says, the only explanation he has. “It’s not,” Daniel says, grabbing Max’s hands in his. “This –” They’re moving together, as close as they can get, their foreheads pressed against each other, salt on both their faces, and Max feels it, the way he feels it every time Daniel touches him, the rightness of it: this is what his body is for. “This is so fucked,” Daniel says, and it hits Max like ice water. “I shouldn’t have told you,” he says, and when he steps back Daniel doesn’t reach for him again.
nsfw: caught you coming alive by anonymous | E | 17.9k
This is a dystopian future AU in which people are matched by computer before marrying. They meet their matches while blindfolded and are expected to have sex to determine if they're physically attracted and compatible. Daniel is disillusioned and cynical about the process after years of failed matches. It's Max's first time. The ache of loneliness around Daniel is palpable, and Max's guilelessness is completely in character. Max is carrying the baggage of family expectations. Their connection is natural and immediate. The worldbuilding of the story is deft and elegant and never detracts from the character work. Also, it takes a very talented author to write double-blindfolded smut.
His hand is still resting against the inside of Daniel’s bicep, and he inhales like he’s preparing for something. It is so quiet for so long that Max almost asks if Daniel wants to stop. But then they are in motion again and his fingers travel across the crook of his elbow again to the top of his forearm. “I have a little cupid here,” and the Max’s hand is only there for a moment before it’s on the move again, down, “and a bit of love underneath him. In case he needs a boost.” There is a crack, minute, and so quiet Max wonders if he only heard it because he can’t see. Maybe he wouldn’t have noticed the hitch in Daniel’s voice if he was too caught up staring at his face or tracing tattoos he can only shape in his head. But it’s there. Breaking around the word love and not quite putting itself back together by the time he’s finished speaking. Max wishes he could see him, if only to lean in to kiss him without risking a black eye for them both. “And to round off the top half of the tour, we have my beautiful rose.” Daniel’s light, teasing tone is back, and he has laced their hands together, Max’s right in Daniel’s left. “If you just do this,” and he rubs his thumb across the top of Max’s hand, “you might feel it. No thorns to worry about.”
nsfw: glory, from a high rise by @yekoc | E | 24.3k
Another AU, this one featuring Daniel as a bartender and Max as a troubled finance worker who tries to drink (and fuck) his sorrows away. This is one of the first maxiel fics I ever read. It's kind of a greatest hit in Maxiel fandom to the point where I wondered if I should even rec it. But the chance of someone new coming along to the pairing and missing out on this masterpiece is one I can't bear to take. Max's sadness and self-punishment in this story is crushing, and his emotional unavailability makes this relationship's early stages very difficult. Daniel is emotionally mature enough to protect himself and be realistic and clear about what he wants and needs in a partner. It's a long journey for them (and us), but absolutely worth it.
He couldn’t look at Daniel. Daniel didn’t need to apologize; Max knew what he wanted was fucked up, something desperate and out of his control. With Daniel sometimes it had felt better, like it was something okay; like he was good. But Max got it. Daniel wanted a—a boyfriend, someone he took home and went out to dinner with and introduced to his family at Christmas. He was thirty. His friends had families. Daniel deserved that too. He would be good at it.
nsfw: one step closer and i'm real by whichisgolden | E | 24.7k
Max time travels through different universes and falls in love with every version of Daniel. I loved the ending so much (and I won't spoil it but it's absolutely adorable). I also loved the characterization of both Max and Daniel, it felt so real!
“Daniel kissed the side of his face, his eyebrow. “If I did choose,” he said, haltingly. “If I wanted to come back, and what you’re saying is right and you got zapped away into another dimension— I don’t think there’s any universe where I wouldn’t want to do this with you. All Daniel Ricciardos want to kiss you.” Max opened one eye. “What if I have the defective one?” Daniel burst into laughter. “I think we’re all defective, actually. That’s why we like you.” “Okay, shut up.” Max wrestled him down on the couch to kiss him, and then they had to go celebrate.

This fic is partially told through emails & social media messages, and takes place in a parallel-canon 2022 season, where F1 has taken some PR hits because the drivers are constantly getting into fights. The FIA hires an expert public relations manager, who has some... creative solutions, including an anonymous messaging feature between drivers. Every part of this makes me smile: the warm, dry humour, the perfect characterisation & Maxiel dynamic, the PR shenanigans... and, of course, the "anonymous" messages. It feels like a love letter to online friendships, not just anonymous ones - celebrating how you can be your honest self and share what you might not share with people irl (and, if you're Max and Daniel, fall in love all over again in the process!)
P.S. - A big congratulations to Roscoe Hamilton for signing on for a new modelling contract, showing off a range of very fashionable luxury dog jackets. Although the adage goes - ‘never work with children or animals’ - I do sometimes wonder if it would be easier on both counts.
nsfw: there was always warmth between us by @freeuselandonorris | E | 32.1k
Max brings a sex toy to a race and Daniel inevitably finds it. What ensues is rising sexual tension and tiptoeing around each other. I really liked this fic for how it made this single event, Daniel finding Max’s toy, into a deeper story with rising tension and a lot of humanness. I think that was my favourite part about it, how human both this Max and Daniel are, even within the context of sex. The character development was a lot of fun to read and made the pay off even more worth it!
Dan smiles at him in an unfocused sort of way, his hand brushing against Max’s knuckles. Max twitches. Is he doing it on purpose? He glances at Dan’s face but finds it inscrutable.
nsfw: come on, star boy by @yekoc | E | 42k
A high school football AU of Max and Daniel! Featuring past Brocedes and a little bit of angst with Jos being a sucky dad. They live in Alabama and it explores their story in high school love! I loved the writing style so much! I feel like high school AUs are also not super common in the F1 fandom, so it was so nice reading it!
“Do you miss it?” Daniel asks. “Not school, I mean. Soccer. Football.” “Yes,” Max says. He draws his feet up onto the seat and wraps his arms around his legs, chin on his knees. The strap of the seat belt pulls against his broad shoulders. It can’t be very comfortable. Daniel can’t get his head around it, that Max and his dad moved all the way to what, to fucking nowhere Alabama, so that he could play football instead of soccer; so that he could grab hold of some faint trail towards stardom.
nsfw: right where you left me by TheNorthRemembers | E | 54k
It's 2018, and Daniel and Max are driving for Red Bull. It's the Azerbaijan GP, and the inevitable crash happens. Max goes to sleep, but once he wakes up–he finds that he's in a time loop. This is my favorite time loop fic ever! "It's race day" quotes haunt me in my sleep in the best way possible, and the fic delves so much into Daniel leaving Red Bull and how Max deals with it.
All Max can do is stare, his heart beating so hard, he can feel it in his voice as he speaks. “You are leaving.” How are they supposed to be together if Daniel is leaving? If he hates racing with Max so much that he wants to give up his seat with Red Bull, his chance at winning, at winning it all. How can they- He never says ‘I love you’ but he just called Max a child, he just said he’d leave. And what the fuck does that say about them? About Daniel’s feelings for Max? “I’m doing what is best for my career,” Daniel says, like that means anything at all.

“Lyla, input the diagnostics results.”
The holographic AI dramatically throws her head back with a loud sigh, displaying what seems to be exasperation, before appearing next to Miguel’s right shoulder in an instant.
“Would it kill you to be courteous? Jeez.” Her voice echoes in his ear as she swiftly transfers massive amounts of data onto the screens in front of him. “Keep that up and you’ll die alone.”
“I’m already well on track for that.” Miguel mutters, shaking his head to ignore the persistent ringing in his right ear. He taps the hovering screens, attempting to make sense of the flood of information presented to him, but frustration paints his face as he places a hand on his hip, clearly dissatisfied with what he’s looking at.
After taking on the responsibility to resolve anomalous situations across universes, the self-proclaimed leader of the Spider-Society had been juggling some issues pertaining to his own respective reality for several weeks now. Not that it had kept him from keeping the order in the multiverse, far from it — but he had allowed said issues to pile up long enough that they became an inconvenience.
“This isn’t what I need.” He grumbles, growing more irritated. “It doesn’t tell me anything.”
Lyla groans.
“Well if you had just, I don’t know, taken care of it six months ago before Stone got his hands on reality-altering tech—”
“I know, I know, don’t you shocking start with that again.” Miguel interrupts, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I screwed up, we get it. And now it’s on me to fix this mess—which is what I’m trying to do.”
His eyes briefly glance up at the live feed from the storage room where said tech was being securely kept.
“But I can’t do much if I don’t even know what it is I’m dealing with.”
A flat metallic platform, that was it. Roughly 15 feet on each side, no discernible control panel, energy source, or any other identifying features. After a surprise raid into Alchemax’s quarters following scattered electrical surges that left nearly half the city without power for a few minutes, he had stumbled upon the strange contraption in the underground level of the building. The machine—if you could even call it that—was surrounded by passed out scientists strewn out across the room, many of which were visibly brain-fried from the sheer power they had been subjected to. One thing led to another, and the mystery device was now being monitored at the Spider-Society’s base.
“I can see if there’s a way to examine the circuit board and extract more data, but…” Lyla hesitates, “That’s assuming there is a motherboard at all. I rarely say this, but I’m afraid my skills might fall short in this case.”
One thing was sure though; whatever that device was, it did not originate from his universe.
He could sense it the moment he walked into that lab. A faint, continuous buzz reminiscent of TV static emanated from the machine, imperceptible to the human ear but painfully noticeable to his heightened senses. The hum quickly became unbearable, prompting him to relocate the device to another room for the sake of his sanity.
That might perhaps explain why Lyla couldn’t provide any significant information about the device—despite essentially being a supercomputer, there were limits to her cross-dimensional knowledge.
“Just…do whatever you can. I’m counting on you.” He says, walking toward the exit as his mask materializes over his face. “I’m heading out. Let me know if you’ve got any news by the time I’m back.”
“Sure thing, Supreme Leader.” Lyla mockingly responds.
Miguel scoffs and steps outside, but takes one last glance over his shoulder at the machine on the screen. An uneasy feeling was gnawing at him, but he couldn’t quite put his finger as to why—call it intuition.
“Let’s hope you don’t bring me more problems than I already have.”
* * *
Hours have passed since Miguel's departure. Lyla remained a steadfast sentinel, her projection poised beside the dormant machine (which she had nicknamed Carmen); she was monitoring it diligently, occasionally responding to other requests from Spider-people, while still remaining vigilant.
“What’s the matter this time?” she mutters to herself, her voice laced with a hint of exasperation, as she looks at the holographic screen in front of her. Ever since the creation of the Spider-Society, her days had been filled with an endless stream of inquiries and requests for intel, leaving her with little respite.
‘Lyla, could you update me on that Scorpion guy from last week? I brought him in from Earth-5684 but—’
Before they could finish their sentence, a sudden, intense buzzing reverberates through the lab, causing the lights to flicker and casting an eerie glow over the room. The disturbance jolts Lyla from her virtual reverie, momentarily freezing her digital form in surprise.
“...That can’t be good.”
In the fraction of a second, without warning, a soft vibration reverberates through the room, a low hum that seems to originate from the very heart of the machine. It pulses with a persistent rhythm, gradually growing in intensity with each passing second. The air crackles, charged with an electric energy that seems to awaken the dormant device.
As if responding to an unseen conductor, the once inert machine bursts into life, its sleek surface flickering in a dance of lights. Multicolored beams of illumination sweep across its intricate circuits, transforming the previously monotonous exterior into a mesmerizing display of pulsating colors, as though the machine had been infused with a newfound vitality, electrified by an invisible current.
It seemed like the fabric of reality itself had been punctured. The storage room, once a haven of silence and shadows, was now vibrating with an outworldly energy.
Without hesitation, Lyla hangs up on her previous interlocutor and activates the communication interface, swiftly sending Miguel a notification. "Miguel has got to see thi—”
Her statement was promptly cut short by a sudden burst of blinding light which enveloped the room, illuminating every corner with an intense radiance. Simultaneously, a piercing, high-pitched ringing filled the air, drowning out all other sounds within the lab.
As the blinding flash dissipated, leaving nothing but fading afterimages, a heavy silence descended upon the room—the once buzzing and vibrant space now seemed suspended in stillness, as if time itself held its breath. Lyla's holographic form shimmered, adjusting to the abrupt change in atmosphere, her virtual senses on high alert.
She advances toward the enigmatic machine, her luminous projection casting a soft yellow glow on the metallic surface. As she draws closer, her eyes widen in astonishment, taking in the unexpected sight that greeted her.
Before her lay two women, unconscious and sprawled across the surface of the enigmatic machine. Their bodies were still, seemingly untouched by the events that had just unfolded.
Caution mingled with curiosity as Lyla floats closer, hovering above the motionless figures. She observes them with a mix of awe and concern, contemplating her next course of action. Uncertainty gnawed at her programming—should she consider them civilians, or potential foes?
With a resolute decision, she reaches out to initiate a diagnostic scan. Her holographic fingers gently brush against the women's motionless bodies, activating the scanning protocols within her digital realm. The familiar yellow grid of data begins to envelop them, meticulously probing for any signs of distress or anomalies.
A few minutes pass as the scan progresses, her virtual eyes scrutinize the readings, processing the influx of information. Every datapoint was meticulously analyzed, every anomaly would be cataloged for further investigation—yet, despite the thorough examination, the results provided no immediate answers. The women appear unharmed, their vitals stable.
“Just where the hell did you both come from?” An unease settled within Lyla's digital core.
As though to answer her question, you suddenly jolt up, gasping for air. It felt like you had been holding your breath for hours, and the stagnant air of the dark room you found yourself in nearly felt like hot coal in your lungs.
The dim lighting makes it hard for your eyes to adjust to the darkness but you still look around, not recognizing your surroundings nor remembering how you ended up there. Did you fall asleep in an unused meeting room? Or did you pass out from skipping all meals at work again?
Your mind was clouded with incessant ringing, and the strange pressure in your chest was not helping.
“How…” You begin before your own body interrupts you, giving you an uncontrollable urge to retch.
Hands and knees on the cold ground, you wipe the saliva off the corner of your mouth, making sure your clothes remain untouched, before clumsily attempting to stand up—in vain. A few attempts later, the agitation begins to kick in as you realize something is clearly off. The shortness of breath, the persisting tinnitus, your uncooperative muscles, the obviously unfamiliar room—weren’t you at the office a minute ago?
You blink a few times and finally are able to make out the space around you. Are those…machines? And the cold ground under your hands and feet is just…a large slab of polished metal?
“Where the hell is this?” You whisper under your breath, finally able to stand up on your own two feet. “What…am I doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” You jump back in fright, letting out a loud yelp at the sudden female voice coming from beside you.
You turn your head to catch a glimpse of a bright presence next to you—right in front of your face, as a matter of fact. You yell out in surprise and nearly tumble backwards as you make out the details of your startling interlocutor.
A small, glowing, floating woman.
“What the—”
You don’t even have time to process the sight in front of you before she disappears and reappears behind you in a split second.
“Before anything else, I think you should note you’ve got another friend over here.”
Nearly gasping for air in incomprehension, you frown and squint in the direction the small ghostly projection was illuminating with her glowing yellow figure. It takes you a second to recognize the body of a woman laying still on the ground.
“Oh, shit, that’s—” Hurriedly, you stumble in her direction to check in on the woman. You recognize her, having seen her at the office before—but your mind was too clouded and all over the place to focus on where exactly you know her from. “Are—Are you okay? Can you hear me, are you hurt?”
With shaking hands and voice, you manage to check her pulse and see that she’s breathing.
“If you can hear me, I’m part of the office ERT, can you—”
“Gee, I just said you had another friend, not that you need to give them mouth-to-mouth.” The female voice chimed in behind you. “She’s fine, just knocked out.”
You hesitate and look back and forth at the unconscious woman, then her. Cautiously, you take a few steps in her direction, keeping your body as a shield between her and the motionless body.
“Who are—”
“Urgh, please! Spare me the questions. How cliché.” The glowing figure interjects, leaving you no chance to place a word.
You frown.
This situation was getting increasingly bizarre; why were you talking to this ghostly woman in the first place? Nothing guarantees that she isn’t a fragment of your imagination—what if you hit your head and were hallucinating the whole thing?
For now, your priority was to make sure the unconscious woman behind you got the proper care she needed. You turn on your heels and prop her arm onto your shoulder, attempting to position her into a piggyback-like hold.
“Wait, what are you—” After a few tries, you finally succeed, and start looking for an exit to the room. “Hold on, I need you to stay put before—”
Ignoring her calls, you finally notice a large hexagonal-shaped gate across the room. Although the woman on your back is quite light and petite, you nearly trip several times due to thick wires scattered across the ground coming from all sorts of machines, of the kind you’ve never seen before. You try not to give it too much thought and walk up to the gate before it opens automatically.
“Where do you think you’re going? You can’t just walk off on—are you listening to me?”
You wave off the small woman, leaving her with a gaping mouth and an offended look on her face, before stepping outside.
As the gate opens, the blinding light of the outside world makes you automatically raise your free hand to your face, slowly adjusting to the drastic change of atmosphere.
Slowly but surely, your eyes are able to make out the sight in front of you.
“What in the…”
The sight that unfolds before you defies all expectations, leaving you in a state of awe and disbelief. Instead of the familiar surroundings you were anticipating, you find yourself standing in the midst of a futuristic cityscape that stretches far beyond the limits of your imagination.
Towering skyscrapers adorned with sleek, shimmering glass rise into the sky, their impressive height seemingly reaching for the heavens—the buildings showcase breathtaking architectural designs, with curvaceous contours and intricate patterns that defy gravity and conventional norms. The city pulses with life, its streets bustling with futuristic vehicles zipping past in a blur of neon lights and sleek lines.
You can feel your heart rate increasing exponentially, and you drop to your knees, unable to understand what is happening as questions swirl within you—is this an elaborate dream?
“What the hell is this place…” You whisper to yourself, barely able to breathe.
As you stand there, captivated and petrified by the unfamiliar futuristic cityscape stretching out before you, an unshakeable feeling of being watched prickles at the back of your neck. A shiver runs down your spine, sending a wave of unease coursing through your veins; instinctively, you turn around, your heart pounding in your chest.
In that split second, a shadowy figure descends from above with startling speed, and before you can react, a needle glints in the dim light, plunging into your arm. A sharp sting jolts through your body as the tranquilizer takes effect, swiftly robbing you of your senses.
“I told you to stay put.” You faintly hear the same female voice from earlier echoing from behind you.
With a last desperate gasp for breath, you try to stay conscious, fighting against the overpowering sedation. But it's a futile struggle; your body slowly succumbs to the tranquilizer's grip, and you sink into unconsciousness.
As your vision fades and your mind drifts away, you catch a glimpse of the mysterious figure standing over you. Their features remain obscured, concealed by the darkness and the adrenaline coursing through your veins, but you are able to discern the familiar sight in front of you.
A final thought echoes in your fading consciousness, and you let out one last whisper before the darkness claims you completely.
“...Spiderman?”

i can't stress enough how much money you can save once you live in your own place by learning simple repair and DIY. since I live in the city, it's probably more common for me to encounter people who are actually fearful of picking up a drill and mounting something on their wall. however, it's so damn easy to do the absolute basics of home maintenance and DIY/hardware installation/just gotta mount something on the wall/whatever. do not think you can keep sticking things to the wall with blu-tack or tape, that shit does NOT last and you will ruin your walls with it
There's a MOUNTAIN of youtube videos that will literally save your life out there. Literally just search "this old house" and the subject you need, and you'll find the information you need. Does the video use words you don't understand? Google that and I guarantee you'll get videos that explain it. in detail. by very nice people.
Tumblr media
even if you end up renting your whole life, you will eventually run into the need of fixing your toilet, replacing a light switch, mounting a TV on the wall, etc.
I don't want to turn this into a "home maintenance megapost" because it's hard to decide where to start and where to end. However, I have a few general tips and advice for you:
Safety first
should go without saying, but your most important tools are safety goggles, work gloves, ear plugs for loud things, and any other protective equipment that saves your eyes, fingers, etc. Even if a job is quick and simple, you have no idea when you might slip up and fling something into your eye, so just be safe every time and wear your gear.
Electrical stuff is not as scary as it looks
This is usually the most mortifying ordeal I hear from people. They're terrified of replacing a light switch. However, it's 100% foolproof to prevent yourself from being electrocuted. Apartments and houses have breaker boxes that completely shut off electricity to a circuit. All you have to do is turn on the switch/something in the outlet you want to mess with, switch off the circuit at the breaker, confirm the thing you need to repair/modify no longer functions because electricity is not flowing to it (the circuit breaker will have shut off the flow of electricity), then start your repair. Do not flip that circuit breaker back on until the job is done. That's it. Now, the details of the job are a whole other story, but wiring an outlet or a switch or a lamp is pretty darn simple. Again, youtube has endless tutorials.
You will be sloppy when you get started, just take your time
if you don't do this stuff for a living, it takes years of infrequent practice to finally get good at it. have drilled through interior walls to the other side a few times before I learned my lesson. the old adage "measure twice, cut once" is true. do it three times if you need to. and if you botch your wall drilling into it (you will botch your wall at some point) it's so easy to spot fix things like that. on the other hand, fragile stuff like plumbing need a gentle touch (i.e. some stuff you should only hand-tighten, because over-tightening can cause leaks). so it's best to take your time, check and re-check your work, and don't do something until you're confident you can do it. watch tutorials or ask a friend to help!
Use the right tool for the job
Good tools are pricey, but last way way longer and will not break on you in the middle of a job. Furthermore, it's a bad idea to force the use of a certain tool that doesn't do the job right. For example, you're trying to take something apart and you don't have the right type of screwdriver, but if you just, kinda like, wedge the bit in there... stop. Don't do it. You might end up stripping the screw, then you have two problems. Don't ever force something that's not the right fit. If it's not an emergency, it's better to wait till you have the right tool to fix it than to cut corners. Lastly, tools wear out, specifically tools that cut and drill, so you do actually need to replace those periodically
Stud finders don't work
except for that joke where you point it at yourself and it beeps and you say "yep, found a stud". that's the only time they work. If you need to find a stud, you might be lucky enough to be able to use a magnet to find the nails, but most of the time you're going to have to measure the distance from a corner (studs should be placed at a standard distance apart... however that has changed based on how old your house is). tbh this is a nitty gritty topic, and again, google some tutorial videos to help, but i just wanted to say don't waste your money on those studfinders
The type of material you're working with changes the tools you work with
There are specific tools and materials made to be used with other specific tools and materials. For example, with drills, you're going to run into different terms like "hammer drill" and "impact drill" or just a plain old "drill". Materials like concrete and brick need specific drill bits and high-powered drills like hammer drills in order to drill into them. However, a hammer drill will damage drywall and wood. Find out what your apartment or house is made of, and then figure out what tools you need to work with it.
I know this is kind of a scattershot post, and I will admit I'm definitely not an expert, but feel free to shoot me an ask about any of this and I'll try to answer

Wolf Spider (Finale)
Sam Carpenter x Spider-Man!Reader
Tumblr media
It wasn’t supposed to go like this. Venom wasn’t supposed to have bonded with Detective Bailey. Sam wasn’t supposed to arrive in the middle of your battle at the clock tower. And you weren’t supposed to have your entire base of operations be going up in flames like this. But life, like it does to so many spider-folk, loves to throw you a series of curveballs.
Ghost-Venom, your little name for the abomination currently in front of you and Sam, roars before forming a giant curve blade with one of its arms.
“I’m gonna spill both of your innards all over New York,” Bailey speaks through the symbiote.
“I believe him. ” you shout as you grab Sam and jump out the nearest window. The monster’s arm blade narrowly misses you as you do so.
“Run run run little spiders” the creature growls as it too takes to the open air, swinging after you.
“Bailey’s got your powers now?!” Sam screams.
“The symbiotic copies abilities” you explain as you swing through the city. “We have to lure him somewhere”
“What stop him?”
“Sound or fire”
“What about-?” Samtries to ask as you’re suddenly smacked in the back by the creature, knocking you right into the heart of Times Square. You shield your girlfriend as you smack into the cold hard pavement. Sam rolls out of your arms and over a couple feet. She tries to pull herself to her feet.
“What is it with my battles and always ending up here?” you wince from the impact.
Ghost-Venom lands with a mighty crash on the street in front of you, “You took my family from me. I’m simply returning the favor”
He grabs a taxi cab and flings it at you. Thinking quick, you spin a web, entrapping the vehicle. It does nothing to stop Ghost-Venom from crashing straight through it and backhanding you right into the Times Square jumbotron. Bolts of electricity surge through your body, electrocuting you. Screams of pain erupt from your very core. And then all of a sudden it stops. The electricity begins coursing somewhere else.
You turn to see Chad, clad in a makeshift black track suit and one of your abandoned masks. He’s sticking to the side of the jumbotron and absorbing all the electricity.
“Surprised? So am I” he smirks from under the mask. You hand him one of your web shooters. He clasps it onto his wrists, “Crash course?”
“Point and shoot with your middle and ring fingers…”
“Let’s protect our girls!” The two of you swing down and kick Ghost-Venom square in the chest. Tara speeds in on a motorcycle and unloads a shotgun right into the creature.
“Tara?” Sam asks in amazement as her younger sister pulls her to her feet. Tara hands her a gun as the two take to firing off shots.
You and Chad work in tandem to weaken the creature.
“How are we gonna stop him? There’s no fire around here?!” Chad asks as Ghost-Venom flings him across the area.
The sound of a revving guitar solo catches your ear. You can’t help but smirk, “but we got sound.”
BOOM! The sound of a rocking guitar explodes in a shockwave, knocking Ghost-Venom flat on his chest as Hobie rocks out from behind.
“Sorry I’m late, bruv” Hobie smiles as he raises his amp’s volume to eleven. Ghost Venom shrieks in pain as does Bailey.
An idea forms in your brain, “Chad! Use your electricity to turn all of Times Square-”
“Into a giant amp” Chad smiles as he swings off and combines his new ‘venom bite’ as he later calls it, with all of the speakers and screens around Times Square.
Seeing a couple construction pipes, you work to slam several of them into the ground around Ghost-Venom, locking the monster in place. Sam and Tara fire off several shotgun blasts keeping the creature in its cage.
“Hobie!” you shout, “turn it up!”
Hobie smiles as he plays the loudest guitar solo he’s ever played. All of Times Square short circuits, sparks fly, Venom cowers and slowly rips away from Bailey. The detective screams in pain from the forcible extraction.
Chad swings in, fully charged and zaps the cage with an untold amount of electricity. The combination of sound and light ignites the symbiote and Detective Bailey’s legs.
You web a line and pull Bailey out of the cage. Venom screams and shrieks as every last shred of the creature is finally burned away.
Bailey looks up to see you, Sam, Tara, Chad, and Hobie staring down at him
“You’re in some real deep trap, mate” Hobie chuckles as he webs up Bailey.
“Trap?” Chad asks
“It’s a slang for-never mind” you wave it off.
It’s been a couple months since then.
Bailey was arrested, Quinn testified against him and acted as a key witness.
Anika was released from the hospital and is now enjoying every day with Mindy.
Gale was also released from the ICU and is currently writing from eyewitness accounts about the battle in Times Square. She’s got quite the bestseller on her hands.
Chad and Tara have been taking it slow. Mostly because Chads been busy training with you as the Electric Spider. The names still a work in progress.
And now that brings you to your relationship with Sam. The two of you have found a nice little studio apartment which doubles as the new Web. You still miss your old one but hey now you can spend as much time as you want with your girl.
Sam frets at the kitchen counter, pacing back and forth nervously.
“What’s wrong?” you ask with a little smirk
“My über won’t be here on time to take me to work”
“I can take you”
The offer was really tempting for Sam, “really?” She bites her lip mischievously.
“I have a patrol that way anyway” you shrug nonchalantly.
You open up the window overlooking New York and gesture to it.
Next thing Sam knew, you and her were swinging through the open air. Sam was shouting with the delight all the way to her new job.
Sam Carpenter was the woman you’d live for, die for, and overall, to be this universe’s Spider-Man was truly something…amazing.
The End

cosmic wip
an: this fic is taking me FOREVER to write and i like this convo quite a bit so I am posting it on tumblr!!
---
This was a huge claim. Starline blinked in surprise. “You . . . stabilized an energy circuit? Without a surge protector?”
Ivo gave him another paper from the folder. Starline stared at it blankly. On the paper was a schematic for a capsule; in the main section was a drawing of a small bird, and attached to the bottom was a battery. The title read: animal-powered battery.
“This must be some kind of joke,” Starline mumbled incredulously. In what world could animals power a facility like this on their own? He couldn’t even begin to imagine how they would stabilize his energy electrical circuit. That was a feat physicists had been trying to achieve for decades. And here, Ivo was claiming to have done it own his own. Without training.
“It’s not a joke! I’ve been using those batteries as my main source of power for many years, now.” Appearing excited, Ivo leaned forward and tapped the schematic with a finger. “They work because I adapted our laws to the conditions of this world. You are a biologist first, so I will explain this simply: Chaos Emeralds respond to the needs of living creatures. Without their interference, the animals inside the capsule would die during the energy extraction process. The emeralds protect the animals by supplying the electrical circuit with enough energy to function without killing them.”
Starline blinked. Ivo was right—he was a biologist, not a physicist. He hadn’t looked at energy physics in a very long time. But despite his inexperience, he understood just how big this stable energy capsule could be. Ivo had made a breakthrough in Earth’s sciences. Unstable energy had suppressed the planet’s sciences for millions of years. If Ivo’s invention really worked . . .
“Given your silence, I can only assume that you’ve come to understand the grander implications of this capsule,” Ivo said. He took the schematic and put it back into the folder. “Don’t get too excited. I have no intentions of sharing this with anyone else for the time being.”
He was keeping it for himself? “Why?” Starline demanded. “You could help science everywhere!”
Ivo shook his head. “This will not help science. It is a temporary fix to a much larger problem. To help science, I will need to present a complete solution to the energy crisis.”
“This is a good first step!” Starline argued. “Other physicists could use this to find the solution!”
As Starline spoke, Ivo’s face fell. He said his next words sternly. “If human science was capable of solving the crisis, we would have done it by now. I accomplished what I did by abandoning our methods completely. No other scientists would have been willing to do such a thing.”
They were right back to Ivo’s initial argument: humans, and by extension their science, are idiots. “What makes you think so?”
“Anyone who is allowed to practice science in a lab has completed the circuit of higher education. To survive such a circuit, students must depersonalize themselves and accept rigorous training. They are traumatized into accepting academic dogma even if it seems unnatural to them. Upon graduation from such a system, how many of them will be willing to abandon everything they’ve learned to perform ‘unscientific’ experiments?”
Starline immediately disagreed. “They’re rigorously trained to meet scientific standards.”
“On a non-standard planet! Everything they’re learning is useless until we can solve the energy crisis.”
The logic didn’t add up. “Then the crisis is unsolvable. Unless you mean to say that you’re the only one who can do it?”
Ivo crossed his ams with a huff. “I’ve hit a road block in my research. Now that I have the capsules, I am finding it more and more difficult to pretend that I don’t have expectations for my experiments. Staying away from university could only bring me so far. No matter what I do, I will always make assumptions about the future and my experiments. It is an unconscious way of thinking that I cannot overcome; my brain simply cannot accept the uncertainty created by Chaos Energy.”
Unconscious ways of thinking. It all clicked at once. Starline looked to the cognitive tests on the table in front of him and realized exactly what conclusion Ivo had drawn from them.
“You think only someone with a traditional Mobian worldview can solve the energy crisis,” he said. Ivo nodded his agreement and Starline kept going. “It has to be someone comfortable with uncertainty . . . someone with an intuitive understanding of Chaos Energy.”
“Precisely! The energy crisis will only be solved by someone whose first reaction to learning the law of conservation of energy is to refute its existence.”

Helping Hand 3
Warnings: non/dubcon, mentions of divorce, and other dark elements. My username actually says you never asked for any of this.
Characters: Jonathan Pine, 40s reader
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging.
Tumblr media
"Andy, I'm on my way to work," you say, almost breathless as you charge across the parking lot, "you know, I gotta pay my rent, my water, my electric--"
"Not that easy, is it?" He sneers.
"Excuse me!" You bluster, barely dodging a car as you go to cross to the sidewalk embankment in front of the store, "how dare you--"
"I did you a favour. Accept it. You needed to grow up, be out on your own--"
"Why the fuck did you even call?!" You throw your hand out as you pace along the window of the store. Only he can get you like this. Good riddance, it really is a favour.
"My mom's party--"
"Oh, fuck off. I don't have time for that. I'm working overtime trying to scrape by because you gave me nothing, Andrew! You took everything and gave nothing!"
You tear the phone from your ear and hit your finger against the screen. End call. Bastard. He has you all worked up before a twelve. Probably exactly what he wanted.
You stop and force yourself to catch your breath. You can't walk in like this. You're close to tears. You don't even realise until your nose tingles and you feel the sheen threatening to spill over. You cover your face and huff.
"Oh, dear, are you alright?"
You don't move at first, hoping the voice is talking to someone else. It's too familiar. You slowly drop your hands and look at Jonathan. He must have quite the library if he's here so often. You swallow.
"Yeah, yeah," you like. You are not okay. You wasted twenty years on a man who never loved you. "I'm just about to get started."
You force a smile, cheek twitching as it bulbs. You turn to peek over your shoulder at the purple logos behind the glass. Thank god the barriers hide you from view.
"Ah, well then, shall we go in together? I'm just headed in myself."
"Uh, sure," you nod and drop your purse from your elbow to your hand, stuffing your phone inside. "Thanks."
"Allow me," he rushes ahead of you to the doors, "darling."
He gestures you in first. You precede him, hiding the chagrin that tugs at your forced smile. You see Heather, another trainee, and give her a small wave. She's behind the till doing her morning half-shift before classes.
"Well, uh, I should go put my stuff in the hub," you say over your shoulder, "I have to clock in for the--"
"Mr. Pine," Marcia, the morning manager appears from the Best Sellers display, "how are you?"
"Oh, hello," he greets her brightly, "just another check-in. Holidays are fast approaching. Any word on the truck?"
"Not yet but we're scheduling for it's arrival--"
Your head turns buzzy as you short-circuit. Pine. As in Pine Shelves, the story. He's not a customer at all, he's your goddamn boss. Oh god, as if the day couldn't get worse.
"Pardon, we'll discuss that later," Jonathan tells Marcia, "I was just speaking with this lovely employee. Always so helpful. I see training is going well."
"Ah, she's one of Giselle's, but thank you, sir."
He nods and she takes her cue. She retreats as he faces you. You can't speak. You're stupid with shock and embarrassment.
"I hate to make you late," he grins handsomely, "I wanted to tell you though that my sister loves the bookmark, no word on the book yet."
"Your sister?" You blink.
"Ah, yes, she had a birthday recently," he explains, "I must thank you for your suggestions."
You nod, fighting back the blaze behind your eyes, "no problem, Mr. Pine."
"Oh, dear, Jonathan suits me fine," he fixes his pocket square.
"Alright, um, sorry, I..." you look pointedly at the clock, "can't leave them hanging... sir."
"Hard worker," he praises, "as you will."
He stays as he is as you back away. You spin, nearly walking into the shelf of pens that stands centre of the wide aisle. You quickly skirt around it and scurry into the forest of paperbacks and hardcovers.
You get it. It was all a test. You just hope you past. Certainly, you will know once your probationary period is up. For now, you'll just painstakingly agonize over every word you said to the man.
💙
Your shift finally ends but brings with it little celebration. There is no relief in going home to an empty apartment. The rush of customers kept your mind off of the disaster of your life and now you have nothing to keep you from facing the mess.
You cross the lot, checking the time on your phone as you head for the stop right at the edge of the road. You see the orange letters of the bus banner approach. Shit, it's early.
You break into a run. Oof, you're a bit old for this. As you get to the curb, you're left in a fog of exhaust. The driver doesn't see you as he pulls away and you curse at the moonlight. Of course.
You deflate and fall onto the bench. Your feet hurt, your hips hurt, your back, neck and shoulders. Forty minutes for another bus or you could walk down twenty minutes and catch the connection.
You don't know which is better. Once more, indecisive to a fault. You lean forward and cradle your head. You can't even afford an uber or taxi home. You're better off walking for two hours.
So that's what you'll do. You get up and drag your feet down the unmaintained and crumbling sidewalk. You get to the large intersection and wade through the chaos of lights and impatient drivers.
On the other side, you head towards the light of the Walmart with several stops outside. It will at least be safer than standing in pitch black. As you come up to the edge of the large shopping plaza, a pair of headlights flash over you. On, off, then on again. Then a short toot.
You squint at the sleek black paint and the interior light flicks on. Oh god. You cringe as you make eye contact with Jonathan and he gives a small wave.
Just what you need.
He rolls down his window and sticks his head out, "need a lift?"
You shake your head, "my bus is coming." You point over him.
"Bus? Darling, I insist." You hear the locks slide back, "do get in."
You stare, a deer in actual headlights. You can't afford a taxi, so you sure as shit can't afford to tell your boss no.

Skybound
Tumblr media
skybound definition: confined to the sky.
In which Jay becomes Lightning to save his friends. And Nya says “I love you.”
☁️💙⚡️💙☁️⚡️💙☁️⚡️💙☁️
Finally, the battle against Wojira was over.
After all the wild waves and the howling wind and the crackling lightning, the Sea Serpent that had lurked in the depths of the ocean for thousands of years was destroyed.
The Storm Amulet had been broken, and Wojira had screamed and writhed as lightning encased it before she exploded, the power from the ancient beast sending shockwaves throughout the city.
Then, there is silence. The raging storms stills at the death of their master, and the waves of the sea resided, the flooding slowly draining away until the ocean is back where it’s meant to be. There is a calm, a tranquility that is found right after a hurricane where the peace slowly drips by until the damage is to be realized.
The Ninja stand still with bated breath, waiting for the last member of the team to appear.
There is a clap of thunder, a crack of lightning, then—
The Master of Lightning descends from the clouds and joins them on the rooftop.
“JAY!”
He turns around to be greeted by the cheers of his friends as they rush towards him.
“Way to go!”
“Yeah!”
“I knew you could do it!”
“Jay!” Nya is the first to reach him, her eyes shining as she beams at him. “You did it!”
She throws her arms around him, expecting him to hug her back.
She doesn’t expect electricity.
Her hairs stand on end, the thrumming of static pulsing through her body. It suddenly feels as if she is walking in the Sea of Sands, under miles and miles of power lines and consciously aware of the high voltage of electricity passing above her head at the speed of light. Jay’s body feels wild and chaotic, like lightning stored in a glass bottle.
She pulls away with a gasp of shock, static clinging to hair and clothes. Sparks of lightning travel up Jay’s arm, and he looks at it curiously. Nya backs away, unnerved by the uninhibited show of power Jay displays.
“Heh, that’s going to take some getting used to. But we’ll figure out a way to change you back, don’t worry.” Cole chuckles. “Just don’t short-circuit the TV when we play video games, okay?”
Jay seems to ignore the comment, tipping his head questioningly. “Back?”
“To normal. You know, the old you,” Cole explains.
Jay looks even more confused. “Normal?”
“What’s wrong?” Nya asks hesitantly. “Are you okay?”
The clouds suddenly part from where they hang in the gloomy sky, golden light pouring over the rooftops. The lightning designs on Jay’s body glow brighter in response.
Jay stares, transfixed with the sky.
“Do you hear it?” He asks in wonder.
“Hear what?” Nya asks.
“The clouds  … they’re so loud  … so powerful  …” he smiles.
“It calls to him,” Benthomaar whispers.
Lightning suddenly begins to spark off Jay, and everyone but Nya flinches back to avoid getting shocked. Nya watches with horrified awe as Jay almost seems to dissolve right in front of her, only to be stitched back together with strands of electricity.
“Sorry. It’s difficult for me to maintain this shape.” Jay says.
Nya suddenly feels like she’s been kicked in the stomach as dread starts to flood her heart, pool into every limb and sink into her bones. “What do you mean shape? That’s— That’s what you are,” she says.
“What I was. Yes.” Jay smiles fondly, and suddenly Nya can’t breathe.
Was.
Was, like Jay wasn’t there, wasn’t real, that he was gone— like he wasn’t just there in front of her when he kissed her on the cheek when she was fading in and out of unconsciousness after Kalmaar’s attack.
Jay couldn’t—
Jay couldn’t be—
“I have to go now,” And— And Jay is pulling away now, he never pulled away— turning his back to her as he walks towards the edge of the building. “I will remember you.”
“Remember?” Cole repeats. “What are you talking about? You’re not going anywhere.”
Jay doesn’t stop walking towards the edge of the roof, and Nya forces herself to move. Her legs feel like lead has been poured into them, it's so hard to move without stumbling, but she forces herself to chase after Jay.
“Jay! Stop, wait, listen!” Nya’s whole body is trembling, and a blinding panic is building up in her chest. “Something is wrong with you. You have to concentrate, you have to focus, you have to— turn back!”
Jay hasn’t turned around or faltered in his steps while Nya is talking, and with a sudden burst of energy, Nya surges forward and grabs his wrist.
Lightning surges from his hand, and Nya jerks back. The shock left her hand stinging, and the message is all too clear.
Jay was Lightning. He was electricity, twisted and woven in the shape of her Yang. Jay had become his element, had become Lightning itself, to save her. And now he was  …
“No,” Nya’s voice breaks. “Don’t leave me.” Everyone is caught off guard at the vulnerable, desperate, trembling tone Nya takes.
She’s never sounded like that before. Nya has always been the strong one; she’s always been the one to power through the traumatic events that happened to them, been the one to tell them to never give up and that there was always a solution.
But now— now Jay is leaving her, and he’s never coming back, and she’s realizing that there is no way to fix this. She can’t do anything, she can only just sit and watch as the love of her life disappears, and know that there isn’t a perfect way to solve this.
Jay stops, shocked at the sound of her voice. He turns around to see his Yin. Her shoulders are curled in on herself, and she’s staring at him, eyes swimming with tears.
His eyes soften and he walks towards her, gently brushing a hand over her cheek and wiping away a tear. Nya can’t help but lean into the touch, sensing the undercurrent of lightning running through his arm.
This doesn’t feel like a concession.
This feels like a goodbye.
Nya’s lips tremble as she feels Jay’s hands drop to her’s, holding them. He doesn’t shock her, but she can feel his power fluctuate, thrumming against her skin, always moving.
He pulls away, and her heart breaks. Her hand still tingles from the electricity of Jay’s hand, and Nya isn’t ready.
He walks towards the edge of the roof and stands on it, the lightning marks etched in his body brightening in the sun. Jay lingers on the precipice between the sky and them, looking over his friends with a soft smile.
Nya steps forward, a single tear falling down her cheek. “Jay  … I love you.” She says.
She’s never said those words aloud before. Ever. She wasn’t good with the words, not after so long where it’s been her and Kai against the world. Jay knows that, and he understands. He says the words “I love you” freely, and knows she responds with every bright smile and held hand.
This time  …
Jay doesn’t respond to her.
He smiles, glowing eyes filled with love as he turns away from his friends.
No  …
He’s leaving.
No, no no  …
“Jay!”
Nya stumbles forward, desperate to catch him, to stop him, to tell him to come back  … but she’s too late.
There is a blinding flash, a crack of thunder, and when Nya opens her eyes again Jay has vanished. She looks to the sky and sees a shining light, the clouds swirling around like they’re welcoming an old friend.
Nya watches as the light beams through the gloomy clouds, and in the next moment, there is an earth-shattering boom as Jay disappears across the sky, taking the storm with him.
Electricity still lingers in the air, the atmosphere holding its breath like the eerie moment of anticipation between lightning and thunder. The buzzing sound doesn’t leave Nya’s ears as she stares at the sky, searching for any traces of Jay with a gaping hole in her chest.
She’s vaguely aware of the others joining her, Kai placing a hand on her shoulder and Wu comforting Cole.
It doesn’t matter. Not anymore.
Jay is gone.
☁️💙⚡️💙☁️⚡️💙☁️⚡️💙☁️
“What now?” Kai asks, watching his little brother, Lloyd, continue scrubbing windows dully.
“Give him time.” Cole says, staring at Lloyd sadly. “Maybe we’ll have better luck with Nya.”
Kai winces. It’s been a year since he’s been in contact with his sister, Nya, practically disappearing off the radar ever since Jay’s memorial. She had been inconsolable, and Kai didn’t know what her state would be like a year later.
Would she even be interested in stopping the Vengestone buyer? Nya used to love missions like that, but without Jay there  …
Kai stops that thought as a pang of grief went through him at the lack of smart comments and jokes that would occur on the mission. Jay had been there since the beginning of Kai’s journey to be a ninja. He had been the one to lighten the team with jokes shared on dreary nights, and had a spark to him that made any situation seem possible with his inventive ideas.
Without Jay  …
Kai shakes himself out of it as Zane starts talking. “Does anyone know the whereabouts of Nya?” He asks monotonously.
“Yeah, what’s she doing?” Cole asks.
Kai turns to stare out the window, the gloomy sky a bleak grey. There is no thunder, only the promise of rain. Kai wonders what that meant for the floating lanterns that would be sent into the sky in Jay’s honor.
“What else?” He says. “She’s out chasing storms.”
The Lightning Ruins, then.

How a Computer Works - Part 2 (Logic and Memory)
For those coming in late, I am writing a text-only explainer of how a computer works, starting from the absolute basics of running a current through various electronic components. We covered that much, and the reasons I'm doing this, back in part 1, where we also sort of left off on a glib little cliffhanger about how once you have logic gates, you're there, right? Well the thing of it is, getting to a point where you can easily make all the basic logic gates actually was really huge, historically, because the next big step to making a computer was already handled by weird math nerds hundreds of years before the physical hardware to make a computer was properly available.
As far back as 1705, math nerds were publishing papers on binary math. That was based on nerding out over the I Ching if you really want to trace things back, and the first time anyone really sat down and tried to build purely mechanical computers was back in the 1800s they had this all figured out to the point where I'm looking at a diagram from Ada Lovelace in 1842 that definitely covers more than I'm going to get to here. So, let's start catching up there. First though, as always, I have to remind you this blog is basically my job right now, and I'm dependent on some percentage of the people reading these posts to go throw me some money on patreon to continue to be alive, so I can write stuff like this.
Logic Gates
We talked earlier about the actual physical components needed to physically build a computer, at least of the sorts we've been using for the past hundred years or so. But really, all you need to make a computer is logic gates, a way to plug values in them, and a way for them to show some sort of output. We're doing that with clever tricks to make conditional electrical connections, but you can use anything, really. Clockwork, falling water, migratory crabs stepping on pressure plates, groups of people agreeing to poke each other's shoulders, or just mathing it all out on paper. All you really need is a consistent way to set up all the fundamental logic gates... and math nerds will note that there's a couple you can build all the others from if you're in a real bind.
So let's go over them again real quick. All of these take two inputs and give an output. We can call those inputs "on or off" "flowing or still" "yes or no" "true or false" or of course the popular "1 or 0." In terms of a computer, as we build them, the first option for the inputs is "if I follow the electrons getting pulled this way all the way down, I'm going to hit a big relatively positive charge" and our output is going to (hopefully) lead towards a big negative charge so we'll have a complete circuit and lights will like and all that. Again, we are going to just ignore how the actual movement of electrons is totally doing the opposite of what we're calling "input" and "output" here. You could build logic components where things really move the way that makes intuitive sense but... we didn't, and we're stuck with that.
So the first and easiest gate we have is the OR gate. An OR gate takes its two inputs, and it's looking for at least one that's on/yes/true/1 whatever you want to call it, and if it has that, it's going to pass it along as it's output. So like, we've got two wires coming in, if either or both is connected to a positive charge, we're passing that connection along, maybe through an LED so it can light up and she how cool we are on the way to a negative charge, but if neither connects to a positive, we're not lighting our light, so, we're passing along off/no/false/0. Simple. Gonna stick to just saying 1 and 0 past here for reasons of laziness. So, 0+0=0, 1+0=1, etc. But maybe we don't use + because that gets confusing with actual addition. So we'll just say 0 or 0 outputs 0. 1 or 0 outputs 1. 0 or 1 outputs 1. 1 or 1 outputs 1.
Then we've got AND gates. Here we pass along our 1 or whatever you want to call it if and only if both our inputs are 1. Just one or the other isn't going to cut it, it's gotta be both. 0&0 outputs 0. 1&0 outputs 0. 0&1 outputs 0. 1&1 outputs 1.
Then we've got the oddball of XOR, or exclusive or. If it wasn't a bunch of STEM people naming these we'd probably say like, "either" vs. "and/or" but this is for when we want exactly one of our inputs to be 1, not both. So, 0 xor 0 outputs 0. 1 xor 0 outputs 1. 0 xor 1 outputs 1. 1 xor 1 outputs 0.
Then we've got the evil twins of those, NOR, NAND, and XNOR. These give the exact opposite outputs their N-less cousins do. 0 nor 0 outputs 1. 1 nor 0 outputs 0. 0 nor 1 outputs 0. 1 nor 1 outputs 0. NAND outputs a 1 any time it isn't getting two 1s. XNOR is particularly badly named since it's outputting a 1 if and only if its inputs are the same as each other and "SAME" would both make more sense and have the same number of characters, but conventions are what they are.
Anyway, point is, if we can construct these six things and string them together, we have all our bases covered on every sort of behavior we could possibly want in terms of taking two inputs and spitting out an output, but the only immediately obvious use case there is if you want to hook multiple light switches up to control a single bulb in various ways and really screw with people trying to figure out what's up when they enter a room and flip a switch, right?
Well, we could also throw some diodes in and branch off from each switch into multiple gates controlling multiple lights with different switch combinations with each bulb following different logic. Especially when you remember that we can use the output of any given gate as the input to another, but what about something actually useful?
The Incredible Power of the S-R Latch
So... here's an actually useful thing we can do. We can store a value for later by looping it in with itself. Check it out, they call this sucker a set-reset, or S-R Latch, and all we need is to take two NOR gates, branch a wire off the output of each, and cross that over to be an input of the other NOR gate. So gate A is taking what we're going to call our Set wire as one input, and gate B's output as the other, and gate 2's going to take what we're going to call our Reset wire, and the output from gate 1. So uh, what does that do?
Well, let's do the math here. If we're just feeding 0s into S and R, then gate A is getting a 0 and let's say, for now, a 0. It's a NOR gate, so feeding in two 0s outputs a 1. So... gate B is getting a 0 from R, and 1 from gate A, so yeah, it was in fact putting out a 0. Hooray, that guess was right, nothing funky's going on here.
Now just for kicks, let's hold down a button for a second to connect to something and make S a 1. OK, NOR gate A now has a 1 and a 0, so it's outputting a 0... and gate B is taking that 0 and the 0 it had from R, so, it's a 1 now, and that 1 goes back to gate A, so gate A has two 1s, which doesn't change how it's putting out a 0 so, no further changes to keep track of there.
Well cool, let me just let go of this button then. Oh well NOW instead of getting a 1 and a 1, NOR gate A is getting a 0 and a 1... but whatever, it's still outputting 0. It's gonna keep outputting a 0 unless it has two 1s after all, that's what a NOR gate does, and uh... huh. It's kinda stuck now isn't it. Doesn't matter if S is a 0 or a 1, gate A is stuck outputting a 0 and gate B is stuck outputting a 1! Gate B is the output we care about here if that wasn't clear. We've rigged it up so that yeah, if there's ever a point where S gets pulled positive/set true/set to 1/turns on, that output gets stuck as the same, and the only way to get it back to a 0 is to go and put a 1 into R. The whole thing's symmetrical so we shouldn't have to step through all this. A ends up outputting 1, so B ends up outputting 0, and R no longer matters.
Well that's all pretty cool, but hey, just to be thorough, what happens if we put a 1 on both S and R at the same time? Well, if A was outputting 1 B gets two 1s, so it outputs a 0 to A, so that's a 1 and 0 for A so it gives B a 0 so B gives A a 1 so A gives B a 0 so... oh we broke it didn't we! In pure logic land this is some sort of paradox. In real life there aren't really any 0s and 1s just wires at different charges and components that don't work right when those aren't steadily in certain ranges so... it resolves SOMEHOW but uh... let's maybe avoid this whole situation.
The S-R latch sucks! Let's make a D flip-flop!
Well one simple thing we can do is have another input wire in the mix, we call it Enable, and we AND it with S and R before we send them into the latch so a 1 can only get in there if we give it the green light. That seems like a good sort of design to use with everything we do with these gates actually. When a wire's going towards a cool setup let's AND it with an enable signal that has to have a 1 or else it's going to stay giving a 0, keep it from getting up to anything. Maybe more than one enabler even.
You know what else would be nice though? If we didn't need two to send a 1 down one wire to store a 1, and a 1 down another to store a 0. If we're doing this whole Enable signal thing and making sure nothing happens otherwise, what if we just like, branched off our set wire, ran that through an inverter, and put that into R? That'd just make it so we can have some sort of Data line with whatever value on it, and whenever we turn on Enable it gets stored, right? Now it's a D latch.
Plus we're never going to have a 1 on both of those inputs, right? Well see, this is one of those situations where we have to deal with the whole perfect logic of 0s and 1s thing doesn't quit fit with reality. It takes SOME time for that inverter to invert (and technically some time for signals to travel along these wires, but less when there aren't neat components). So turns out if you have a wire branch out, send one end through an inverter, then plug both into say an AND gate, every time you change what's on that wire there's going to be this super short little burst of a 1 coming out of that AND. That's very inconvenient for us right now, but it's a cool hacky trick to have in our pocket if we ever want to time something to just do something real quick at the very moment the voltage on a wire shifts from low to high.
We can pull the same sort of trick with a capacitor then a resistor going to a low. Also I should never say "at the very moment." There's values on all these components and mathematical relationships, and when you're really building these things and needing precision timing (because with a computer we want things happening in a very specific order, but VERY FAST) you need to actually do that math. And you know, it's actually very handy for out purposes of avoiding that 1 on both inputs issue if we do something like that, so OK, new design from the top here just for a clean visualization:
We've got a line with our clock signal (I'll get to that in a moment). We run that through the capacitor-resistor-to-negative setup to get this quick little pulse every time the clock line ticks up to positive. Now we split that out to AND gates A and B. We've also got a Data line, it's gonna have whatever. We also split that off, one line going to gate A, the other going through an inverter and into gate B. AND gate A's output goes into an input for NOR gate A, along with the output from NOR gate B. AND gate B's output goes into NOR gate B along with NOR gate A's output. You can wrap all that up in a little box now and so long as we remember to make changes to that data line out of sink with the rising edge of our clock signal, this all works super great. Change the data, pulse the clock, data gets latched in to our new thing we're calling a D flip-flop. We've got a wire coming out the other end from NOR gate B's output that's just gonna hold whatever value until the next time the clock pulses and we check our input again, and we can use AND gates to skip the check if we don't want to read a new value in, or don't want to send that new value off somewhere else.
What's this about a clock?
OK, so, we want our computer to do stuff. Our computer can really only ever do one thing at a time, because the only thing it can really do is latch values into setups like we have above and messing with two inputs being positive can make logic gates go screwy. So like we already did with the D flip-flop we can totally time things along the rising and falling edges of a charge flipping constantly between high and low values, and time everything off that. And we don't even need to do any extra work for that because it JUST SO HAPPENS that smart people worked this all out before any of your fancy transistors were even a thing and the electricity comes right out of your wall in this neat sine wave pattern that peaks 50 or 60 times a second depending what part of the world you're in on the assumption that any electronics that need any sort of timing can work with that.
And I mean that actually is true but screw that we're building a computer. We rig something up to convert that to DC and then we pump that into a chunk of quartz or something. See there's this thing called the piezoelectric effect where the structure of certain kinds of crystals makes them change shape when you run electricity through them then snap back and release it. So you grow a quartz crystal exactly how you want it and lock it up in a little box and run electricity through it, and it'll start twitching away in there at a speed dependent on the voltage, and you just hook in another wire and you get these nice steady alternating high low pulses. Or something close enough to that anyway.
And we're "reading values in" and "passing them along" how?
So we talked about enable lines before right? Like with our D flip-flop there, where we ended up only committing changes to what was latched in when there was a clock pulse? It's easy enough to just have more AND gates for more conditions. Like let's say for the sake of argument and convenient numbers we set up, oh, 8 of those D flip-flops. They each have their own data line, they're sharing a clock, and we're throwing another AND in on the clock line to a shared Read Enable line. We have a 0 there, nothing's going to happen. We have a 1, things will happen when the clock pulses, specifically we latch in whatever's on the data line. Now let's also have an Output Enable line, and we'll AND that in with the output of every flip-flop, and in the interest of being lazy, let's have each flip-flop's output just loop back and connect to it's own data input line... maybe have some diodes in there so it's a one way loop, we probably have some in here but you know, best practices.
Anyway let's take some really really long and we'll call these our bus lines. Each of our 8 data line connects to a bus line. Elsewhere in the computer, anywhere else we're going to have data sitting around in fact, those also connect to these 8 bus lines. We might have a set of 8 flip-flops to hold some set of data for just a little bit, or for a long time, or connected to some switches or buttons, or just some LEDs or other kind of output, whatever. Everything connects to the bus, and everything has enable lines to pull in whatever values are on the bus and to push out whatever onto the bus. We definitely don't want have more than one thing trying to push stuff out at a time, we also definitely want to do that whole pull-down resistor thing to make sure everything on the bus defaults to 0 if we aren't feeding in a 1, and we probably don't want to be reading from the bus at the exact moment the data on it is changing as a best practices thing, ideally, but oh, quick sidetrack there.
Let's say we have some a clump of these flipflops, we call that register A, we have another we call register B, and we build some little module that treats what's in both of those like an 8 bit number and adds them together, we call the output of that our sum register. And say we get lazy, we leave the sum register's output enabled, A's input enabled, and we've just go 00000001 stored in B. Now every time the clock pulses and updates our math function, the sum increases by 1, feeds right back into A, and the whole thing ends up counting up at the speed of the clock. There's simpler ways to make something count up, but, hey it's a thing you can do. And a thing you probably don't want to do, so don't leave those pins enabled all over.
In fact, if you really wanted to be safe, you'd maybe want to just like put a pull-down on every enable line and have them all lead to a big control zone where you're just sitting there holding a live positive wire in your hand and touching it to whatever one thing you want enabled at a time. Seems like a pain though.
Why not use an addressing system?
OK, so how about this? What if we organize everything so we've got like, our big longterm memory area, and we have a bunch of these registers of a flip-flop for every line on the bus, and then instead of a simple enable pin for each register, we have a unique little access code for each? Let's have oh... 4 dedicated data lines just for managing these, right? So one of these is oh, memory address 1001. So we just have lines carrying those values, and we XNOR those with our address lookup lines, then we AND all those together, and use THAT for our enable.
I already covered how XNOR makes way more sense if we just call it SAME instead, right? We're only going to pass a 1 to the set of ANDs at the end if we've got a 1 and we're getting another 1, or we've got a 0 and we're getting another 0, and if we pass a single 0 to the ANDs, they clam up and don't enable things, but if we pass the whole value, we're in.
We can use a similar address coding thing to activate cool little function models too. Like that thing I mentioned in the tangent for doing addition? We have some operation code to enable to output on whatever memory register has a number we care about and make register A in that math module read it in. Another to plug a value into B. Another to output the sum to some memory address we want to store it in. We can set it up so these get checked for if someone sets toggle switches corresponding to the code and locks it in with an enable button, or hey, we can set up one of those big blocks of addressed memory, lay the whole sequence of actions we want out in that in sequential addresses, and then just have some function that adds 1 to itself every clock cycle as a line counter, and enable the outputs of our program counter to dump out those stored commands out to our opcode and memory address lines when their number gets called at the deli, as it were. Hey, make one of the commands write to the program stepper and it can even skip around.
And... there you go. That's how a computer works. There's more stuff I could, and probably could cover, like how to rig up a program counter and an addition module and maybe some sort of real output display. Not to mention how to actually, practically, compress all of this into a reasonable space so you don't just have a few thousand transistors soldered together in a giant tangle with the nightmare of keeping contacts from touching. I'll probably get to at least some of that in some future part 3. In the meantime, I learned most of what I'm sharing here by actually for real building my own computer using a kit and series of instructional videos from eater.net which is just the homepage of some cool guy who, yeah, posts long explainer videos on this stuff and sells electronics kits you can follow along with. I don't have any advertising deal going here or anything, he's just genuinely a good extra source of info for getting your head around this stuff. And again, if you thought this was a cool read or you're just feeling generous, throw me a little money maybe?

Okay, I just saw ur WIP challenge post, and cuz I'm addicted to DPxDC, could I ask about numbers 22 to 25? Cuz W H A T- all of those short-circuited my brain to think about consecutively
(If I can only ask about one per ask, could I ask about the Amity Park Nuclear Blast Zone one? Cuz omg that would explain so much if the timeline was lined up JUST the right way-)
Ty for all these suggestions because I now have the motivation to complete them. Most of 22-25 I have nearly completely done or have the beats planned out but need more research.
I'll make sure to tag you when each gets finished so you can see the ones you requested!
So far, you got me to finish up 22!
A Summoning Going Dead Wrong (an ask by @sagaduwyrm I commandeered from @stealingyourbones that got stuck in WIP hell for the past month and is FINALLY done.)
The original ask:
Tumblr media
--------
stealingyourbones original intro section:
---------
Oh my god.
I love this so much this is incredible.
Batman is grumpy, Flash is pissed, Superman is confused, all of the leaguers are frustrated because Madame Xanadu’s instructions weren’t working.
Go to the middle of bumfuck nowhere Illinois: check.
Recreate an insanely intricate summoning circle using a grocery list worth of extremely rare items: check.
Precisely at 3am start chanting the words from an ancient scroll that was written in a long forgotten dead language: check.
They followed Madame Xanadu’s instructions to the “T” and yet the ritual isn't working.
----------
Where I continued:
-----------
It always starts the same. An icy wind tears out of the circle as a it begins to glow a viscous green hue.
A metallic taste filling their mouths as the taste of ozone thicky permeates the air. The static almost reminiscent of touching your tongue to a 9V battery.
Oozing toxic green sludge begins to seep upward from the center of the circle, the color so bright it flickers out of human perception. The pile suddenly loses it’s viscosity and like popping a balloon of paint over someone, the goo splashes down, disappearing into the summoning circle, revealing, once again, the wrong damn person floating in the center. Danny Fenton.
Hal let out an annoyed groan as he sunk into the shitty lawn chair and let his head fall limp to the side as he watched Batman’s fifth attempt that week to summon The Ruler of Infinite Realms, yet again the wrong guy.
They knew Danny already, hell, he was a sweet kid who helped to set up the damn summoning circle on the first day of the JL’s arrival.
Danny and his Aunt Alicia were the ones who offered to let the League use a small section of her cornfield to do the ritual.
That same Danny, now out of his farm working clothes and in his pajamas, is currently floating above the summoning circle meant to bring The High Ghost King to earth. Hovering as if an invisible wire is holding his chest up while the rest of his body is slack for just a moment as Batman finishes the last incantation.
The humid night summer air hits them with full force as the icy wind gets harshly sucked back into the portal leaving their ears and noses bitten with the rush of cold air, leaving their ears pop with the pressure drop, along with it disappears the eerie green glow.
The only sign that the circle was active is the lingering taste of acid and the quickly dispersing feeling of static electricity. As last words are spoken Danny drops like a sack of potatoes from his position floating five feet in the air.
The Flash zips over to and catches him before he hits the ground. The movement jarring Danny awake instantly, who quickly takes a glance around him at the cornfields and back at the Flash and relaxes.
Then immediately tenses again as Flash zips him over to an empty lawn chair, the cornfield rustling his wake, and sets him down before heading back to his own lawnchair next to Hal’s.
Bonelessly, Danny seeps into the lawnchair’s hold as he groans, looking exhausted, then glancing at his clunky neon green and white watch with his father’s face peering up at him from the end of the watch’s hands.
“You guys know that I get up at 5 to milk the cows, right? Not at 3. Thanks for the wake up call but this is a little earlier than I’d like.” Danny said.
Batman turned to face the pajama-clad farm boy and sighed, “We’ve had this discussion before, Fenton. The summoning must begin at the witching hour per the instructions or we risk summoning another entity instead.”
“World’s greatest detective and he cant punch a hole through reality right,” Danny groaned as he limply flopped his head toward Batman who was heading to join the rest of the group around the fire, “At this point I should just stay up with you guys and wait if this keeps happening.”
Batman narrows his eyes and begins to open his mouth when Danny cuts him off, “If you say another word about me knowing what nights you try to summon the Ghost King on may interfere with the process and might decrease the odds of a successful summon, I am going to find the High Ghost myself and ask it to remove every gargoyle and grotesque perch in gotham and dump them into the sewer.”
Flash scrubs his face in his hands and distantly looks over to Batman, “Give the kid a rest Bats. It’s been five times we’ve dumped him in this field without a warning. I can’t blame him for being at least a little displeased.” He turns to the yawning kid fighting off sleep next to him,  “Sorry man, we really thought it would work this time”
“No, that's fine. Again, I really shouldn’t have tried to sleep if I knew you guys were going to keep up at it.”  Danny looked around at the other supers huddled around the campfire, sitting in lawn chairs that were all similar states of decay.
“We still doing s’mores?”
Hal grabbed the mostly empty bag of jumbo marshmallows next to his seat and tossed them to Danny, “Saved some just for you, kid.”
Batman’s eyes narrowed from where he sits, now also sitting on the opposite side of the fire as Danny with Wonder Woman on his left and Superman on his right as he maintains direct eye contact with Hal.
The fire crackled inbetween them as Hal sighed and looked at Bruce, “No kidding, he’s pissed Bats. You're the one who keeps pressing that we need to summon this Ghost King. From what the kid says, if it’s still summoning him then it’s just finding the highest source of ectoplasm in the area and bringing it to the circle. Doesn’t help that the kid’s ecto-contaminated enough from his upbringing that it just pulls him in. I cannot imagine that he’s pleased at being awoken at ass-o-clock in the morning for the fifth time.”
“Hhm, you’re just mad you’re not getting your beauty sleep, Hal.”
“Oh trust me, I am. But we can’t just keep summoning this poor kid over and over.”
“I’m 18!”
Ignoring the kid, Hal continued, “We need a way to fix this. Have we called Constantine yet?”
Batman sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose, “I’m aware this was another failure,”
“You can say that again” Danny grumbles as he assembles his s’more with more force than necessary.
“It’s been a repeated mistake so far, I will admit that Daniel.”
“Don’t call me that.” Danny snaps.
“Dan.”
“Don’t call me that either.”
“Danny, then. It is important that we keep trying. Constantine will be here in three days if this is not sorted out by then. However, I’d prefer to not interact with that man if I can help it so we will continue until then to do it with our own efforts.”
Danny, not Daniel and especially Not Dan, now gripes, roasting (or more accurately, burning the everloving shit out of) his smore over the fire, “I don’t even understand why it’s so important to summon him- oh shit!”
The marshmallow melted off the stick and fell into the flames, already being a charred brick of carbon, it probably wouldn’t taste all that different from the cinders it fell on.
Danny turned to Hal, “do we have more?”
“Sure do, kid. Got a whole bag.” Hal grabbed and handed Danny a new marshmellow who viciously skewered the poor thing and shoved it mercilessly back into the flames.
As his marshmallows immediately burst aflame, he turned back to Batman and repeats, “I don’t even understand why it's so important. He’s not even that cool of a guy, I swear.” Danny retrieved his newly made lump of coal from the fire and turned away to assemble the rest of his s’more, clearly not done with complaining but deciding to not test any more of Batman’s limit to dealing with half-dead children. —-- Clark sighed to Bruce’s right. His cape rustled lightly in the slight breeze that ran through the cornfield. That same breeze was also blowing the smoke from the fire directly in his face. He was told to be in this spot. Or more accurately, he was bullied to by Hal and Barry while Bruce, (who Clark just knew was getting a kick out of seeing Superman, The Man of Steel have to deal with directly inhaling campfire smoke for hours on end) stood watching from the shadows with a slight grin on his face because while Bruce didn’t admit it out loud, he was an asshole who liked seeing Clark in minor amounts of misery) who said that there wasn't enough spaces around the fire for someone to not be directly in the smoke’s path so he should sit there because technically didn't need to breathe.
The bane of his existence, the lot of them. Especially Bruce. At least tomorrow he’ll be able to watch Bruce struggle to milk a cow. The nerve of city boys these days.
Clark took his eyes off the fire and turned to look at the asshole who’s made his days a little more bearable, “What do we do now Batman? This clearly isn’t working right.” He spoke quietly, turning his unnaturally sky blue eyes to observe Danny who was now making his second s’more while asking(interrogating) Hal again about the aliens he’s met while working for the Green Lantern Corps.
To his right he could hear the sound of heavy shifting fabric and quietly squeaking leather, the beat of Bruce's heart still as steady as ever as the white lenses of the cowl’s eyes stared at Clark’s back.
Despite his frustration, Bruce hid it well, as he always did. But Clark could tell. “We did everything exactly as Madame Xanadu instructed. Either her instructions were wrong or we’re missing something,” Bruce spoke back in barely a whisper as he knew that Clark would be able to hear him no matter how quiet he attempted to be.
After all, there was no need to talk louder on Bruce’s end. As long as Clark spoke loud enough for him to hear, they could converse partially in secret among the heroes around the fire.
“Constantine is coming in three days.” Clark shifted his gaze back to Bruce who sat in his lawnchair with his typical guarded posture, the fire casting dramatic shadows across his face covered in the sculpted cowl, “You sure Captain Marvel is not available?” Clark asked.
“Marvel is currently dealing with matters at the Rock of Eternity.” Batman whispered. “It’s important that we continue to try to get incontact with the Ghost King with as least outside help as we can manage. Madame Xanadu said that he may be a powerful ally but could turn into a great threat if we’re not careful. The faster we establish contact, the faster we can determine whether this Ghost King can be trusted.”
“And be able to determine how to take him down if he goes rogue.”
“The faster we get him on our side, the longer I have to-” Clark huffed and cut the Dark Knight of Gotham off.
Leaning his arm back over the chair, he raised his eyebrows at his friend. All too used to Bruce’s need for contingency plans. “And the faster you’ll be able to find a way to take ghosts down? I know that you need us here in case something goes wrong because otherwise you would have done this yourself.”
Clark continued, “But if this doesn’t work, Perry is going to threaten to fire me again if I don’t come back with a story about a peace treaty with the Ghost Realm.”
Bruce shifted his cape around himself, “He’s a powerful ghost with unknown abilities and is rumored to be able to take down entire cities with a massive skeletal army. I’m obviously out of my depth here, Clark.”
“Hm.”
They both fell into a comfortable silence for a moment. A light rustling breeze passed through the cornfield, making them wave softly as the sound of crickets in the distance and the crack of embers, pierced the humid night air. The sky overhead was filled with stars with the moon almost at its fullest.
The silence was quickly broken by Hal who piped up from across the now dying fire, “Hey lovebirds! Now that you’ve stopped having one of your creepy one way conversations. I’d like to head inside for the night.”
Clark could hear Bruce just fine, it wasn’t his fault that Hal didn’t have the superhearing necessary to understand the other half of the conversation. It helped that the reactions it got were funny.
Hal continued, “it’s now 3:30 in the morning and Danny over here,” he nodded his head in Danny’s direction, “looks dead on his feet.”
Danny, sure enough, looked absolutely exhausted.
“Pfft, nah, only about half dead. I used to only get way less sleep in high school. Guess I’m just not used to it anymore.” Danny yawned and rubbed his eyes.
Hal patted Danny on the back and stood up, “Come on, kid. Let’s head back inside so you can catch up on your sleep.”
Danny waved him off, “It’s all good. I went to bed at eight so I got a good seven hours of sleep. Just not quite used to being magically summoned in the middle of a cornfield at 3am yet,” he said, brushing off his pajama pants and standing up.
“I better head inside and change so I can get a head start on cleaning the cow shed.” Clapping his hands on his legs, Danny hauled himself to his feet freeing himself from the ratty lawnchair’s grasp and headed down the gravel path to the farmhouse.
To the average human, the night sky just ever so barely illuminated the long path back. But to Clark, he could see the boy retreat as if it were day. Watching the boy reach the junction of the path then pause and think for a moment. Turning around he called out to the group of heros,
“By the way, who is Constantine?”

5 for the ask game?
5. How do you translate the world of Minecraft to fit into your fanfics when you keep the original setting?
Honestly it's gotten a lot easier since I started reading sci-fi. Shulker boxes and Ender Chests are just little pocket dimensions, or have uncanny physics. Elytra are sci-fi gliders. Redstone is radioactive electricity that isn't put into wires because if the dust clumps up a circuit can't run anymore.
Also, messing with time. A lot of people will read something and go "Yeah, this is believable," when you mess with how much time it takes. You can mine 100 blocks in 5 minutes in minecraft, and technically thats 300 feet, and very hard to do. But if you write "They mined all day," most people will go, "Yeah, someone vaguely magical could dig 300 feet in a day" and immersion stays where it's gotta be to survive.
Also just,,,, not overexplaning things. Characters respawn. You don't gotta know why. You can explain what it feels like, if its pleasant or not, but like, who cares why, really?
Also, making stakes that are worse than death. Respawn makes dying cheap, so making it more expensive by giving the player an important McGuffin [If me and my pet die, I'll respawn but my dog won't!] making respawn very painful [I can't die! I'll be debilitated for the rest of the day!] making things break [I respawn but my mechanical arm doesn't!] making spawn inconvenient [I died and I'm trapped in a cage now!] making not dying very painful [I fell off a cliff and broke my leg! How do I get out of this?].
There's some real schaudenfriede creativity going on there.

house remodel updates
I forget where we left off but like so the thing is of course nobody was here over the weekend. on saturday we took dude's mom to the airport and then moved ourselves into her house to house- and cat-sit. yes we're cat-sitting our own cat. listen she can't be in our house it makes sense.
she has been extremely confused by this. she saw the Dreaded Suitcases and hid while Skin-Grammy packed up and left, and then hours later came slinking out in confusion. why were we there instead??? What is this about??
She has mostly adjusted but has been intermittently clingy and invisible, after the manner of cats. But anyway where are we on the kitchen remodel??
Well we got a new guy in the cast of characters. Jim, having shaved his beard somewhat in advance of his upcoming vacation to visit his mom in Florida, arrived in good spirits, and introduced me to John, a youngish guy who is doing the electrical work. John cheerfully explained to me that he was going to be adding up to six circuits to the house, and I had been forewarned that he was also going to be adding hard-wired smoke detectors on two floors since I didn't have any and that's illegal. (The house sold privately, it hasn't been inspected since it was built in 1950, so are we surprised? No!) They weren't included in the contract/quote but are required for the work to be approved by the town, but we weren't surprised by this. I'll pay john separately. For the record it's only like $3-400 to have that kind of thing installed, I was worried it'd be more but he was like nah. I'll bill ya.
A bit later, as I was looking around at the various outlights and light fixtures, I said "oh wait the microwave shelf. there's supposed to be some kind of microwave shelf? somewhere?" and neither Jim nor John knew anything about this. And I was like I remember about this because when we first started looking into remodeling this kitchen we went somewhere and they were kind of snooty and when I said "can we just put the microwave on a shelf" because it takes up most of my counterspace they acted like this was illegal.
"What," John said, disbelieving. "I put in outlets for that like... all the time. It's not only legal it's also super normal."
"They acted like I was a stone-cold freak," I said, "and then they tried to convince me that the only option was a drawer microwave."
John physically recoiled, and made a warding gesture with his fingers like a cross. "That's what I said," I told him, "it was the worst thing I'd ever seen!"
"Those things are the worst," he said, and I felt vindicated. "Naw ma'am. I'll put your microwave on a shelf. And it's fine if we can't find the blueprints, I'll just put the wire up and leave extra, and we can get it to the right spot once we know." (Jim was leafing through the plans and trying to find the shelf, but he'd handed over the detailed plans to his colleague Max, who was going to be covering for his vacation, so he couldn't find the relevant sheet.)
So, John worked on Monday and Tuesday, and I checked in on Tuesday midmorning after I dropped Dude off at the airport. (He has a work trip and it's terrible timing and also he doesn't want to go. He made me promise to eat real human food at regular intervals, which is something I have historically struggled with when unattended. I have been a good girl about this I promise. I went to the grocery store and bought myself a series of treats, which i have been deploying strategically as rewards for having properly fed myself.)
The bad news on Tuesday was that john had gotten all the wires approximately run, but in order to hook them up to the circuit box, was going to need to run them along a wall that I had thought was safely out of range and thus had used to pile up a great deal of the Assorted Nonsense in the basement. Hear me out, when this work was supposed to happen in February, one of the things that was going to happen was that I was going to sort through much of the Basement Nonsense and either discard it, file it neatly, or donate it somewhere that could use it (in the rare case of there being like, anything useful in those piles). But the accelerated timeline meant I had no time for that and had in fact only piled things higher.
Jim informed me of this very kindly, and said it wasn't a hurry since it was going to all get hooked up at the end. But like. I mean. It's not like there's infinite time. So that's what I figured I'd work on Wednesday while I was waiting for the plumber and inspectors.
So, cue Wednesday. I got here like 8:30 and around 8:45 a random car carefully reversed itself into my driveway and then parked, and I thought, this must be Max. And sure enough. Jim's coworker/substitute, a personable guy of like, freaking twenty something, in tennis shoes instead of work boots. But he did seem to know what he was doing, and had been well-briefed on the project. So I went down into the basement and hauled things around (and did have time to sort and discard some things, though not much), and he tacked up more insulation and got ready for the electrical inspector. I thought I was doing to have to talk to the guy but I did not, he came and went and I thought I heard someone talking but by the time I came up it was just Max, tacking down the last insulation he'd had unsecured so they could see the wiring.
After noon the plumber arrived, yet another addition to the dramatis personae: Kyle, another young guy (mayyybe thirty), who works for a guy named Don I guess. I showed him my gas dryer that I was going to ask if he could hook up and he was like oh that will be so easy, yes, when I come back I can do that. So then I showed him my laundry sink faucet that had just started leaking and he was like i also can replace that for very few dollars and very little time. So I am well-pleased. My washing machine is leaking too but I think I'm on my own to sort that one out.
Kyle asked if I was sticking around and I was planning to, so here I am, in the other room, listening to them saw things. I guess I'm getting a whole new sink drain assembly. And he's got to saw out some things to get a water box for the ice maker in the fridge. Why not.
So that's how that's going. The big excitement is that now that the electrical inspection is done and the plumbing is underway, Max and an unnamed assistant who showed up and was even younger are going to start hanging drywall. I'm so excited to have an insulated kitchen with drywall, instead of the uninsulated plaster that radiated cold in winter.
I'd normally be preoccupied with historic preservation but the thing is, this house isn't old enough for that to really matter. No fear, there'll still be some plaster panels in this house when all this is done. I'd prefer if all the exterior walls were insulated though.........
Baby steps. Maybe we'll get there.
Oh one funny little side story-- John was like "oh let me get your number in case i have questions or whatever" and so I started reciting my phone number and he pulled out a sharpie and wrote my number right on the wall of my kitchen. I mean of course it was a wall that was stripped to the studs so he was writing on the paper backing of the reverse side of the plaster panels of my attic staircase, but it was funny-- but it makes sense, now that's there for anyone who works on this project, but then when the project is done it will be gone.
But of course on Monday night when Dude came over to get some things to pack for his work trip he texted me a photo of my phone number scrawled on the kitchen wall and was like "???"
well, i thought it was pretty funny.

Texting him for homework help
Tumblr media
a/n: going to try out a new format + wrote this fic when i was meant to be revising a test but got sidetracked. anyways, you can see how bad i am at science and math HAHA
Summary: You text Muichirou for homework help and he helps you a little
You flip through the pages furiously, nearly ripping them. You should have revised earlier but the fanfiction you were reading was just too good. Your brain is officially a blank slate. Giving up, you opened up WhatsApp on your laptop. His name was at the top of your recently contacted. Tapping into your chats, you quickly sent him a SOS message.
You help, i cant do this anymore
mint ice creamok
You ☹️ science isnt sciencing
mint ice creamok
You how the frickity frack does a fuse work like does it just like stops current????
mint ice cream are you serious 💀 it lets current flow through but if theres too much then the wire inside the fuse will melt and like current can flow through cos its an open circuit do you get it
You ty bbg YES ok and so explain what earth wire does pls its so stupid ☹️
mint ice cream 🤡
You plsplspls i dont get anything 😢 the slides sucks
Muichirou rolled his eyes but opened up a new tab in which he searched for the chapter’s slides. Screenshotting it, he sent it to you, knowing full well what your response would be. Waiting for you to reply, he formed his response to you in his head, figuring out how to explain it in simpler terms for you.
You [Image]
idiot wow so helpful 🥺
You it literally just like conducts electricity to the ground like if theres a leakage then it will prevent the user from getting a shock yk
idiot still a little iffy about it but ok
You its a test, you cant be “iffy” about anything
idiot ☹️ tbf its just a revision
You ok 💀
Rolling his eyes, Muichirou contemplated explaining the concept to you again or just letting you ask him other questions. He patiently waited for you to send your message when he noticed you typing.
You i think ill revise science tmr can you help me with math
mint ice cream the test is tmr wdym 💀
You ik but im too tired of it ☹️
mint ice creamalright, what is it
You soo whats like the four congruency tests
mint ice cream shit are you serious
You yeah 🙁
mint ice cream 💀ok wait
mint ice cream SSS = Side-Side-Side = All sides are the same SAS = Side-Angle-Side = 2 sides + 1 angle are the same AAS = Angle-Angle-Side= 2 angles + 1 side are the same RHS = Right angle-Hypotenuse-Side = Hypotenuse + 1 side is the same
mint ice creamdo you get it 🤓
You lol ass and idk 🙁
mint ice cream i dont deserve the torture of tutoring you
You 🖕 ok but fr i actually appreciate your help 🥺
Twirling around in your spinning chair, you waited for his response. You glanced at the messy pile of worksheets and textbooks on your desk. No matter how hard you tried, his explanations were the only things that you could somewhat get.
You you know what congruent means right
idiotyeah
You impressive. so basically after you prove that theyre congruent youll write “[] is congruent to []” right
idiot yeah
You ok then at the back you write one of the congruent tests like which kind of congruency it is
idiot ok
You 🤡
idiot shut up im tired idw to do this anymore oml
Muichirou’s fingers hovered above his keyboard as he thought about how to respond. He deleted his original message and sent another one.
mint ice cream L
Bonus: <Original message: itll be alright, im here for you>  He knew how hard these stuff were for you and was honestly extremely glad that his explanations could help you, even if it was just a little.
a/n: im so bad at this oml i feel like im horrible at explaining math and science :( tbf i do suck at them and i wrote this for fun (comforting myself) HAHA

A secret santa fic written for @kf-tea! Happy holidays, I hope you enjoy it ♥
“Daniel.”
“Hm?”
Daniel fishes in his coat pocket, feeling for a pack of cigarettes he swears he bought when they left the city. The heat is on inside the trans-am but it’s not enough to keep his toes from going numb in his boots, not even after being in the car for-
Two hours? Three? Daniel has lost count. He’s not even sure where they are now, they’ve been down so many suburban back roads; crawling through neighborhoods where all the houses look the same. Split level homes tossed up in the 60’s, half brick, half new fangled plastic ‘siding’. All of them strung with lights to some degree. Armand has had him driving in circles since the sun went down. What he’s looking for, Daniel doesn’t know. Doesn’t know if he cares, really. After seeing the fourth house strangled by candy colored lights they all start to look alike.
They could be home where it’s warm, listening to Bing Crosby on the record player. Could be baking cookies Armand can’t eat, could be horsing around in the snow one last time before this move to Miami Armand keeps muttering about. Could be doing something, anything they haven’t done together before, because fuck, how many more Decembers does Daniel have left and-
Daniel’s heart creeps up into his throat. Anxiety gets a choke hold on him, mingles with exhaustion and makes his fingers fidget on the wheel. He taps out an irritated tune.
If Armand notices he doesn’t give any sign. There’s no telltale tingle at the back of Daniel’s mind that he gets whenever he fishes through his thoughts. He’s too absorbed by the lights.
Or maybe he doesn’t care. The thought floats up in Daniel’s brain and causes his heart to dip down into his guts..
“Where the fuck did I put my smokes,” he mutters.
Beside him Armand stares out the windshield; auburn curls awash in red, then green, then yellow. The colors flood the hollows beneath his eyes, the dimple above his cupid’s bow. It makes him look innocent. Eerie. He blinks, slow and mechanical, and produces a pack of Camels from the pocket within his jacket without even looking down.
“You left them on the counter at the gas station,” Armand explains. “How do they work?”
Daniel mumbles a thanks and knocks a cigarette from the pack. He glances up at the lights, colors chasing each other round and round the roof, and shrugs.
“I dunno, I never really paid attention in science class when we got to the part about circuits and electric. Anyways, you’re older than the light bulb itself, you should be the one telling me,” Daniel says.
“I’m immortal, Daniel, not omnipotent.”
