'grief & joy'

i had to create some piece for my school's magazine, based on the theme of 'lost in translation'.

the concept for the above duo is the how so many words cannot accurately describe the depth of particular native terminology unless you know the language so intimately. the meaning gets lost in translation from language to language.

similarly, facial expressions can have innumerable meanings behind them. each wrinkle, each muscle, every twitch transforms the emotion and intention behind the expression.

the drawings are made entirely of words from various languages and scripts, all leaning towards the overarching emotion of 'grief and 'joy' respectively. i've listed them below the drawings, but see how many you can spot and recognize! :))

using older women as reference models was for the textural variety of the skin, as well as for emphasis on how age and experience substantiates those feelings brought out on the face.
