Fight, flight, freeze, fawn
When someone has adrenaline, they react with one pf the following four responses. If you want to write realistic characters, consider which they would do and then include it in your writing, even if it's very minor, it makes a big difference.
Fight; In an attempt to overcome the complication, the person fights back. Whether this is physical, emotional or spoken, the aim is to best the problem and be on top.
Flight; In an attempt to overcome the complication, the person flees. This can be physical (running from a predator) or mental (stop thinking about the problem). This reaction aims to put distance between the person and the problem.
Freeze; In an attempt to overcome the complication, the person stops their previous action. This can be physical, to avoid being seen or mental, like their thoughts or words stop. The freeze reaction aims to conceal themselves from the complication.
Fawn; In an attempt to overcome the complication, the person attempts to appease. The fawn reaction aims to avoid conflict, physically (talking to complication) or mentally (passing things off)
Keep in mind; sometimes their reactions aren't successful.
Thanks for reading, have a good day!

i dont think people realize how painful it is to constantly live in survival mode. like fight/flight/freeze/etc. is reserved for when you're close to fucking dying. people weren't made to live entire lives in that state. can you imagine the damage that does?

In Dreams
As a kid and young adult I sometimes had terrible nightmares (I know everybody does, but I have to start this story somehow.) They were given a bit of extra spice by the fact that I had in reality been very unsafe at home at times, and nearly killed (by accident, but still) more than once.
My husband and I married when I was 26 and he was 29. I found having another person in bed with me was a great help to sleeping and reduced my trouble with Olde Anxieties quite a bit. Still, occasionally, nightmares.
Then one night I had a really spectacular one that involved my husband. In the nightmare we were in a hospital room and he was in the bed. Quite ill and not able to get up or move. My dream self knew that there were Monster Coming to get us, but I could not get his hospital bed to roll nor get him out of it to run away. So after a small eternity of dithering and ineffectively trying to figure out a way to escape, the monsters showed up at the room. There were two of them, vaguely human-shaped and threatening. At which point my dream self pulled a Bowie knife and ganked both of them.
That simplified things.
I remember waking up from that and being absolutely overwhelmed. It was THAT easy? Don't run from monsters, stab them? From that point forward, I have been pretty much free of nightmares. I guess my brain was finally ready to fight instead of fleeing. Shortly thereafter I started taking my brain AND my body to martial arts classes. I THRIVED on studying karate; adored it. Brains, though. Can't live with them, can't live without them.

The other snake instinctively turned to follow the movement, which is why instinct is not always the keynote to survival, because Magrat clubbed it on the back of the head. With the wand.
It sagged, losing shape as it fell.
The trouble with witches is that they'll never run away from things they really hate.
And the trouble with small furry animals in a corner is that, just occasionally, one of them's a mongoose.
Terry Pratchett, Witches Abroad *
*for the anon who asked me to hunt down this singular reference to a mongoose in one of the Witch books. Turns out it was from Witches Abroad, and it's a good teaching moment about the danger of assumptions.

Sherlock fandom.
Damaged goods
“Your anger and loyalty will catch up with you one day, and it’ll be your downfall,” John’s father told him when he came home bruised and injured after another fight protecting his sister.
“I don’t care,” John answered through gritted teeth while he cleaned himself up as best he could.
His father’s words hurt just as much as setting his dislocated shoulder, but John knew he would do it all again if need be.
***
“Brother mine, why won’t you tell me who did this to you?” Mycroft asked Sherlock, concern seeping out of his voice.
“I’m not a snitch, Mycroft,” a thirteen-year-old Sherlock spat.
Blood from his split lip created an interesting pattern on his white t-shirt, his left eye was swollen, and the trousers were ripped at the knees where more blood was visible.
***
Through the years both men considered themselves damaged goods, but when there was justice is to be served, they fought. Fleeing was never an option.
Those two men met by chance according to John, but Sherlock always stated that the universe is rarely so lazy.
Whatever it was and however it came to be, they were a matched set. When they were together, they felt whole, their flaws were but trifles.
John’s father never witnessed his son’s loyalty being valued beyond measure, saving a man’s life just hours after he made his acquaintance.
Sherlock’s brother, however witnessed it all in amazement but also with a considerable amount of apprehension. But, as the years passed, despite his aversion to being wrong, he admitted, at least to himself, that he had miscalculated when it came to John Watson.
“He keeps me right, Mycroft,” Sherlock told him when Mycroft had expressed his disquiet.
And for once, Mycroft was glad that he had trusted Sherlock’s instincts.
