Baldroy

bard tries his best to help you reconnect with your culture and heritage — namely through food and language — but he’s far from perfect and his pronunciation might just make you wince at first (he’s trying, really, he’s just also really not good with accents)

do not let this man hear about dishes like loco moco or kālua pig because he will try and recreate it for you and it will go horribly wrong — please, please, if you must, ask sebastian to oversee everything because otherwise you will be eating some charcoal (made with a lot of love and good intentions, but still definitely charcoal)

he calls you ‘ipa’ a lot, alongside his usual rotation of pet names like ‘babe’ and ‘hun’, and his pronunciation gets better and better over time — and if you comment on that improvement then he’ll get the cutest smile on his face and mention that he has ‘the best teacher’ (between you and the books he’s been studying, of course)

he practises a lot independently in the hopes of being able to impress you and your family in the future (a habit ingrained in him from his upbringing — the need to gain approval from the relatives of whoever you’re dating before marriage), but let it be known that he is struggling his way through the syntax and grammar as best he can — but of course he’ll end up coming to you for guidance when he’s truly stuck or realises that perhaps that’s not how he should be pronouncing that word (sometimes it just feels wrong, even to a new learner)

he has punched someone out cold for being cruel to you for your heritage before and he will do it again if the need arises — he has a temper and he can use it to his advantage (sometimes, anyway)

(our!) Ciel Phantomhive

he’s highly empathetic to you feeling out of place in your culture does whatever he can to help mitigate that uncomfortable feeling for you — usually by having sebastian do something or another

he uses a great deal of his sparse free time to learn the specific dialect your family uses, either from you or alongside you depending on how much you can recall, and whilst his pronunciation is imperfect the effort is definitely there (and you’ll often find him practising his annunciation and sentence structure in the late evenings between working through the startling pile of paperwork on his desk)

more hawaiian dishes and desserts are incorporated into the manor’s menu — thanks to sebastian — based on ciel’s research and your own memories of food you grew up with (his personal favourites are lomi salmon and malasada)

if you ever wanted to wear something closer in design or pattern to what you wore back home, then he’d happily commission you some garments from nina — granted they’d probably not be perfect replications of what you grew up with, but he’d make sure that they were as close as they could reasonably be

he’s not afraid to leverage his reputation, connections, and staff in order to protect you and threaten anyone who tries to make you uncomfortable or discriminate against you due to your heritage (his peers, usually) or, conversely, your disconnect from it (other members of your community back home)

Finny

finny finds everything about your heritage and culture to be so very interesting — whether that’s the food, the celebrations, the language, the clothing, or just the island that your family hails from itself (he did grow up in a lab after all, so an environment like that is one that he’d jump at the chance to go and visit)

he’s shockingly quick at picking up the spoken side of your dialect just from hearing you speak it, but reading and writing is a very different story — but he’s so very eager to learn and he wants to be able to help you reconnect with that side of your family in his own way (trying his best to start and maintain conversations in hawaiian throughout the day with you, occasionally pausing mid word to shake his head and correct his pronunciation slightly and asking you if that was right — grinning so broadly it reaches his eyes every time you let him know that he did good)

loves all of the food you grew up eating and will happily devour it and ask for a second helping — his personal favourites are the sweeter things like haupia and kūlolo but he also enjoys the more substantial/proper foods and will just eat whatever you put in front of him

doesn’t quite understand the concept of being ‘haole’ but gets deeply upset by the way you’re treated by some of the people on your island because you happened to travel a lot growing up, which in turn makes him more protective over you and clingy (likewise he gets very emotional and affectionate after someone mistreats you back in old blighty because of your heritage, apologising for how you’re being treated and angry that people could ever be so mean to someone he loves so much)

if he had the opportunity to go visit hawaii with you then this man would be in heaven, exploring the terrain and learning about all the new native plant life (even trying new fruits like lychee, papaya and pineapples, which are far too expensive for him to even consider looking at back home) — you will definitely struggle to get him indoors during your visit and he might just sleep outdoors if you let him

Mey Rin

mey rin can definitely relate to feeling disconnected from her heritage given that her parents passed away when she was young and her only exposure to anything from her home country was the gang that treated her terribly — so the journey to reconnect with your roots would be something she’d happily support you in

she’d join you in relearning the hawaiian language whilst she learns mandarin (well beyond the cusses and insults and derogatory terms that were tossed around in the gang) — exchanging terms of endearment like ‘ipo’ and ‘xīn gān’ as you each become more familiar with your own languages and each other’s

she’s happy to try any of the foods you grew up with (especially anything involving meat), but she’s not exactly the best cook and far too clumsy to be trusted in the kitchen, so you’ll have to take on most of the actual cooking — she’s happy to help fetch ingredients, though (and she’s yet to drop anything… key word being ‘yet’ but it’s a big achievement for her)

if you ever manage to scrape enough time off to go back to your home island then poor mey will be fretting and practising her hawaiian near religiously for weeks leading up to the visit (even practising to herself when she’s working) — she wants to leave a good impression on your family, after all, and is really anxious about getting their approval

she’s not afraid to stand up for you with brits or other hawaiians who try and look down on you because of your heritage and your relationship with it — she knows what ‘haole’ means and she does not like hearing you get insulted (and, as many people could tell you, she can be very intimidating when she wants to be)

Sebastian Michaelis

sebastian is the type of partner who would go above and beyond to help you reconnect (or keep connected) with your heritage even though you’re stationed an ocean away in england

he makes sure the kitchens are stocked with the ingredients necessary to not only feed the master and his guests, but to keep the taste of home close — even memorising the steps to making the perfect lau lau, poi, or haupia (amongst many other dishes) for whenever you’re feeling homesick

being a demon he also has an excellent capacity to acquire languages and dialects without having to do the same amount of active learning that humans do, meaning that he’s more than happy and able to sit and talk with you in your native language (standard or in regional dialects like the niihau dialect) or help you relearn if if it’s something you lost or never quite picked up for one reason or another

it’s not like he randomly incorporates phrases or words from hawaiian into his daily life or work, as he has no reason to, but when the two of you are talking it’s easy for him to slip into it as a more intimate and private thing for the two of you

he makes a point to help you visit your home island and family whenever possible, even at times twisting the young master’s arm to do so — ensuring that you’re able to make any celebrations, festivals, parties, or holidays that you might have otherwise missed (whether it’s a more personal gathering like a luau, or something more communal like the merrie monarch festival)

as one could expect of him, sebastian is incredibly protective over you and intolerant of any attempt to judge or discriminate against you from either side of the debate (brits for being too non-white and your community for being ‘too haole’) and will make his disapproval known in the most aggressively polite way possible (unless he can get away with actively threatening them without repercussions for you or the young master, at which point he might just outright attack the offending party)

Snake

snake is mostly a very quiet and introverted person but that doesn’t mean he’s unsupportive of you and your want to reconnect with your heritage — in fact he offers all of the support he can (using his wages to buy books, food and materials in the same styles that you grew up with just to make things a bit easier)

he knows what it’s like to feel like you don’t quite fit in anywhere and he has extremely little patience for anyone who treats you poorly for your heritage or upbringing — using his snakes and appearance to his advantage in order to intimidate anyone who even tries (he doesn’t speak enough hawaiian to know what ‘haole’ means but based on your reaction he knows it isn’t good and he doesn’t like you being called it as a result)

he’s a big fan of a lot of hawaiian dishes and will easily clean the plate whenever something is made — but his personal favourites are ahi poke and lū’au, both of which he can happily have several servings of

he’d struggle a bit with connecting with your community if you ever managed to bring him back to your island for a visit — but that’s mostly because of his natural introversion and he’s otherwise fine with following you around, helping you prepare food, celebrating holidays with you, and so on

Could you please write a fic with reader being trained by the phantomhive staff in self defense / defending the manor in general? Either all together or a mini story for mey rin, bard, Tanaka, Sebastian? I figured Finny would be more like your personal cheerleader?? Because he can’t exactly teach anyone to have super strength, ya feel? Please and thank you!!

I LOVE THEM ALL, YOUR HONOR

“There we are, that’s it! … Lord, (Name), y’ need t’ tighten up y’r aim a bit, y’ do. That was a bit sloppy.”

You offer a little wince as you turn back to MEY RIN, wondering exactly what she expects of you. This is your first time shooting a gun, after all! “S… sorry, ma’am. I’m trying.”

She nods understandingly. “No, no, I know y’ are. Y’ coulda done a lot worse, all things considered.”

Within only a few seconds, she’s swiftly at your back. Arms around you, she snaps your hands and gun into a slightly different position. She’s been doing this for so long, it must be almost like breathing to her, mustn’t it? You have to wonder how she’s not incredibly frustrated with a newcomer’s abilities.

“C’mere. Let’s see… good. Alright, gimme one more shot an’ we’ll take a li’l breather, alright? Don’t want y’ gettin’ all shaky or nothin’.” She gestures toward the target with her head, then moves to let go so you can shoot on your own. “Pretend that target’s an enemy. Someone what came along t’ do us all harm an’ threaten the master. Y’ don’t ask questions, y’ protect the manor. Shoot ‘em.”

That’s intimidating, but not inaccurate. You don’t want your new life to slip away; you straighten up, take aim, and pull the trigger.

It isn’t long before you move on, with the next person giving you a lesson being BARD.

It seems his preferred method of dealing with intruders is also a gun, just like Mey Rin, although he shows very clearly that he also has a fondness for… well… explosives. He also tells you point-blank that he tends to use guns at closer range than Mey Rin does.

Which you’d lean toward, you don’t even know. All you know is that the recoil from shooting a close-up target is painful. This isn’t something you’d want to do unless your life literally did depend on it.

That said, the explosives aren’t much better. Bard’s gotten very good at controlling the resulting fires, so having you light and throw one toward a target isn’t a problem. The biggest problem is that your hands shake on the matches, leading you to nearly burn yourself.

“That’s alright,” he sighs as he throws water over the last of the embers. “You did jus’ fine, alright? You’re a better shot than you are usin’ fire. So we’ll jus’ make sure you always have a gun nearby.”

“I’m sorry…” You cradle your almost-burnt hand to your chest. “I… suppose it could be worse, right?”

He nods. “That’s right. You’re doin’ fine. C’mon, go take five minutes in the garden with Finny an’ you’ll come back with fresh eyes.”

Off you pop, then.

When you go in the garden to find FINNY and relax for a few minutes, he looks all too happy to see you. It’s as if he was expecting that you’d need a break by this point.

You plop down next to him beneath the tree he’s sitting under, and almost immediately he hands you a freshly picked apple right from one of the branches. He gives you a smile, but doesn’t say anything right away.

The two of you have a snack in silence, then he finally speaks up. “Gets a little intense, don’t it? You don’t gotta worry, though ― from what I seen, you’re doin’ great.”

“Thanks, Finny…” Your shoulders droop a little and you let out a breath. “I just wish it wasn’t so much work. I wish I was just strong, like you, so I wouldn’t have to learn all this.”

He shrugs. “You don’t wanna be strong like me. You’re perfect on your own. It’d be different work, learnin’ how t’ control it, anyway.”

After a moment, he grins at you. “After the break, though, I could show you how t’ distract an intruder. I mean, just ‘cause I don’t use a weapon don’t mean I ain’t got nothin’ t’ teach you!”

… As soon as you finish your apple, you decide to take him up on that.

Because Finny doesn’t want to take up too much of your time, he keeps his lesson short, and shuffles you off to SEBASTIAN shortly afterwards.

The butler is undoubtedly even more intimidating than Mey Rin was when she was teaching you. There isn’t a thing on this estate that escapes Sebastian’s notice unless Ciel specifically orders him to turn a blind eye to something.

That would be worrying enough. He clearly expects you to sharpen your perception the way that he does. He leads you on a veritable tour of the entire estate, attempting (and quite often succeeding) to catch you off guard with attacks that a real enemy would try to use.

If nothing else, like the rest of the staff, Sebastian does take care not to actually hurt you. Well… he bruises your ego a little bit.

“You must keep your eyes a bit more open,” he says, clicking his tongue once you just narrowly avoid falling into the last trap he’s set for you. “If I had been a genuine intruder who got in quietly, you may have fallen to me.”

Still, his face softens when that damned observation of his catches how exhausted you are. It’s obvious he knows how hard you’ve been working. “You have one more day of training ahead of you. For now, what you’ve done will suffice. Go relax, and early to bed with you, because you can be certain you’ll be early to rise tomorrow.”

With one last bow, you trudge down the hallway toward the stairs, intending to head up to the room Ciel has assigned to you near the rest of the servants’.

Before you can get that far, TANAKA stops you. Without so much as word (but with his usual easygoing smile), he ushers you toward the kitchen. You’re bone tired by now, so you follow without any comment.

Once there, he takes a cup from one of the counters and presses it gently into your hands. “Here we are. Something to end your day on a good note ― give you a little soothing after all the effort you’ve been putting in.”

It’s warm against your fingers, the temperature on its own already seeping into all your aches. “O-oh… thank you, Tanaka. I appreciate it… you didn’t have to.”

“No, but you’ll find that the Phantomhive household is rather all about doing things we don’t have to,” he chuckles. “Take the tea up to your room. I’ll be along toward the end of the night to collect it so you don’t need to worry.”

Before you leave, however, he presses something else into your hand: a small blade, concealed within the design of an intricate skeleton key and designed to be flicked open quickly. “And take this, as well. Just in case you happen not to have a gun in reach should something happen. We’re all very proud of you, (Name).”

You give him a brief hug before pocketing the knife and heading up toward your room.

As you open the door to slip inside, the very last thing Ciel said to you echoes in your mind.

You are a Phantomhive servant now, (Name). Never forget that.

They might never know much "fun" again... unless they survive to the end of the series.

"What Would They Think"

Finny x Reader

Genre: fluff, little angst 🥰

(Sorry if my grammar's not the best😅)

Not only were you a maid of the Phantomhive manor, but you were also Sebastian's younger sister. He had taken care of you when your parents souls were devoured by demons and both of you were turned into demons.

Ciel had made a contract with both you and Sebastian, so you two wouldn't be separated.

As your brother served Ciel, you spent your days cleaning rooms, making beds, and helping the other servants various tasks, which included tending to the garden with the cute blonde named Finny.

You were older than Finny by two years and while you both were very fond of each other, the age gap somehow made you feel uneasy.

When he confessed his love for you, you were hesitant at first.

"What's wrong y/n?", he asked when you didn't respond.

You hesitated. You loved him, but you weren't sure if it was right.

A look of regret came over his face, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pushed you." He said sadly as he began to walk away.

"Finny wait," you pleaded.

He slowly looked back at you, a small glimpse of hope in his eyes.

You walked up to him and stared into his turquoise eyes.

You wanted him and you knew he felt the same, but you were afraid of what people might think.

You placed your hands on his face, stroking it lovingly.

"Finny, I....I love you. I really do, but I...", you hesitated.

"What is it?" he asked waiting patiently.

"I-I'm two years older than you. People may find it odd; they'll think I'm some desperate, perverted girl. What if young master finds out, he may forbid it, a-and what if-" you were cut off by a pair of soft lips on yours. You felt strong arms wrap around your waist, gently pulling you closer. Your lips moved in sync with each other in passion, and yet innocence.

You both pulled away after what seemed like forever. Finny rested his head against yours, while staring into your e/c eyes.

"I don't care what people think and I don't care if you're older than me. You're the most amazing person I've ever met. You care for me. You didn't think of me as a freak with monstrous strength. You saw me as a human being, and that's what made me fall in love with you from the start." Finny pressed a loving kiss against your forehead.

"I just want to give us a chance, if you'll let me?" he asked, his voice filled with hope.

You didn't even have to respond.

You wrapped your arms around his neck, placing a gentle peck on his lips, you smiled.

"I'll take that as a yes," he said with a smile plastered on his face.

You giggled in response as he engulfed you in a hug.

Not canon compliant, there’s Hannah comfort moments, and he bonds with the Phantomhive household! Plus he and Ciel aren’t set up to be rivals because Sebastian is acting more like he does in the manga and isn’t lying to Ciel.

There’s no actual romance, I just put the Cielois and Alolizzie tags cause he kinda flirts with them both 🤷🏻 just a good ol healing fic. Enjoy!

"why are you so hot?"

"oh god baby, stop—"

"no literally," your boyfriend murmured as he grasped your hands in his, pulling you closer to him while he looked at you with concern lidded eyes and placed his hands on your forehead, his eyes widening.

"you have a fever, sweetheart," he said, pulling you closer and into a hug while his hands slightly grasped your jaw, squishing your cheeks as he angled your face towards him, his brows scrunched up as his hairs were swept by the winds of the park.

a pink hue dusted your cheek because of the close proximity as you sneezed.

a mistake.

your boyfriend's eyes widened as he pulled you towards him and dragged you to your shared apartment.

"lay down." he ordered as he pushed you on the bed, rushing around to get your medicine and warm water, and running here and there to make you soup.

you didn't miss the concern in his eyes as you smiled at him warmly, "thankyou love."

his eyes trailed over your figure as he sulked, "I really wanted to take you out on a date."

"but I'm here..."

"what?"

you extended your hands as if you were wanting a hug, a small smile on your face as you asked, "will you cuddle with me?"

you swore you had never seen such a big smile on his face as he pounced on you, pulling you closer to him as he kissed your hair.

"wouldn't you fall sick too?"

"I don't care," he spoke out, his voice muffled as he rested his head on your shoulder.

hoo okay I can already tell this is gonna be long but manga thoughts!! i only read up to roughly 150 I think (Also hi hi I’m off anon! anxiety has been overcome >D<)

quick lil context of me even getting into this also! so my roomie and I have a tradition of watching really bad animes during finals weeks and this time my rookie suggested we watched black butler 2 (still so funny it’s just 2 not season two not book of ___ no. just two. Peak comedy) first half of that was laughably bad and then like ep 7 onward it was frustratingly good. Some bizarre pacing some bizzare writing choices but I liked it overall. anyways over winter break out of nowhere I got manga spoilers on my tiktok for Agni’s death and. It emotionally devastated me bc I loved him sm bc of the like one ep in 2 where he appeared. i told my roomie that and we decided to like actually watch the good parts of the anime so I could get a taste of the actual plot (and eventually we watched s1 lmao)

so yeah that bit didn’t impact me as much when I actually read it but 😭 Agni I miss you dearly you’re like one of the only people I’d trust to hold my drink in this series I KNOW you would take care of it and not spill anything. Also, I read the entire (post campania) manga while procrastinating studying for my organic chemistry exam bc chemistry is a pain in the ass and I didn’t want to look at it

right um. Other arcs. so the school arc has some BIZARRE pacing- (and i never got used to the just casually dropping the F word even if it was used iba like historical context) I was half skimming some of the pages bc I thought it was gonna be basically a fluff filler arc so that end caught me off guard- deffo enjoyed the soma content though! i sure hope he stays happy and nothing awful happens to make him stop smiling! hahah fuck.

Emerald witch arc is kinda funny to me. like yeah, okay queen of England, send this 13 (14?? I forgor) year old child to a different country to deal with werewolves. this isn’t even ur country girly what. Wolf and miss sullivan (can’t spell her first name) r fun characters I like their addition a lot. Could’ve done without the uh. weird scenes with sullivan but. whatever. (The scenes with finny taking care of ciel also were so sweet Omg I will cry- finny is probably one of my top 5 charas I love himmmmm he scares me tho )

that being said I fuckcking RECOGNIZED that shit was chemicals as soon as I saw that circle thing oh my FuckKING GOD. I literally put down my phone and stopped reading for a good while. I’m reading this manga to procrastinate my ochem I did not need it to insert itself like that >:’(((( it was good though I liked the arc a a lot (my roommate fucking burst out laughing when she saw me being angy and asked why.)

Sascha and Walmart will (sorry sir you are just not memorable) were cute! Hope we get more content of them in the future, or just more reaper lore. Please. I’m going insane all I want is lore (Also my roomie had already told me abt the reaper backstory so that didn’t rlly surprise me). Will and grell showing up for like one chapter was funny as hell, you know will was pissed bc that whole convo could’ve totally been an email or a pigeon or whatever. i missed them though so im not complaining

Idk what to call the next arc. the return of the school guys was… funny ig?? i have to be honest I kinda disconnect whenever they appear I just don’t really care for them 😭 the whole band group off was so funny though and the tonal whiplash was something I was NOT prepared for. It wasn’t as jarring as the paving of the school arc but like hWUH THATS A LOT OF PLOT AND BIG REVEALS HAPPENING REALLY FAST NOW-

love othello though. I’m a forensics chemistry major and I love the forensics part of it significantly more than chemistry so seeing a funny guy doing that is so very !!! ya :D also love the dynamic with Grelle. they’re both trans and besties you can’t change my mind- ALSO OTHELLO JUST . THROWING HIS SCYTGE AND THEN BIDING BEHIND GRELLE. agni is the most loving and attentive partner that you could possibly hope for — someone who loves you wholly and unconditionally, who supports you in everything you wish to pursue, who is consistently mindful of your boundaries and wishes, who is proud to be with you and who never fails to step up when you’re unwell or upset

when it comes to pet names his favourites for you are ‘mera pyaar’, ‘jaanu’ and ‘my dear’ — he mostly defaults to his native language when he’s complimenting you or referring to you in an affectionate manner, but he has picked up a few english terms of endearment that he’s grown quite fond of using with you

whenever you’re injured or unwell (be that due to physical sickness, mental illness, or a chronic flare up) he will tend to your every need (even more so than usual): managing and tracking all of your symptoms, fluffing your pillows, fetching new blankets, helping manage your temperature, massaging away any aches or pains, making sure you take any medication exactly when you need to, helping you get enough rest, making you your favourite foods, making sure you stay hydrated, helping you keep clean, etc, etc.

he makes it known that he thinks you’re extremely attractive to him and isn’t shy about complimenting you — be that on a new hairdo, your outfit, or just your general appearance — and he’s always extremely earnest and genuine in what he says (yes he might be a bit over the top in how he says it but he wholeheartedly believes what he’s saying and will insist upon it — even if you don’t believe him when he says that you’re incredibly ‘beautiful’/‘handsome’/‘attractive’ depending on what sorts of descriptors you prefer)

his main love language is acts of service and he loves being able to take care of his loved ones (you and soma, mainly) — he learns the recipes for all of your favourite meals, remembers everything you mention liking so that he can get you the best gifts for your birthdays/holidays, tends to you when you’re unwell or in poor spirits, etc.

and if you start to take care of him as well, even if he’s a bit reluctant at first, he’d absolutely melt and get extremely emotional as he’s looked after (especially if you’re very physically affectionate as well)

he prefers to keep pda to a socially acceptable level, and minimal if he’s working since he has to focus on taking care of soma, but he’s always happy to peck you on the temple, the top of the head or across your fingertips if he has a moment

he’s an early riser and if you’re the sort who prefers to wake up a bit after sunrise then he’ll gently kiss your forehead and tuck you back in bed — eventually returning with a cup of your preferred morning beverage and a very cheerful, of quiet, ‘good morning’

when you cuddle he prefers to take on a role that allows him to hold you and keep you close — whether that’s big spoon or him just laying on his back with you curled up against his side/on his chest — because he likes feeling as if he’s protecting you

if you want to learn from him (be that cooking, his native language, or another skill of his) then he’s happy to teach you — agni has the patience of a saint and will offer encouragement, praise and feedback throughout (giving you the space to learn and to grow without judgement whilst also keeping you on the right track)

sometimes he’ll zone out and just stare at you with this really soft lovey-dovey expression on his face when he’s meant to be working and several people have picked up on it — with some lovingly teasing him for it (ciel, soma, sebastian, and bard) and others finding it adorable (mey rin, finny, and lizzy)

agni doesn’t have a jealous bone in his body and trusts you completely, letting you handle any interactions you’re in and only ever stepping in himself if you look uncomfortable, the other party appears to be threatening you, or if you ask him to lend you a hand — and if it comes down to it he’s going to protect you as best he can because that is his duty as your partner (as he’s sure you’d do the same in return)

When SNAKE scurries away from you with little provocation, you don’t really think much of it.

After all, the poor man is still adjusting to life here in the manor. (Similarly to you. If you’re remembering correctly, he arrived just a few weeks before you did.) Not only that, he seems quite skittish in general, so it’s no big surprise that he’s shying away from social interaction. As welcoming as you try to be, there’s only so far that can go toward someone who’s naturally anxious.

However, when FINNY makes an excuse as to why he can’t spare a moment to chat today, you find it odd. After all, that man is as sunshine as they come! He always has a minute to talk to you, to make jokes, maybe even give you a little hug. He’s never beat feet from you no matter how busy things are.

And SEBASTIAN and BARD have been acting strangely too, seemingly in tandem; Bard all but shoos you away from the kitchen, telling you Sebastian will bring you something to eat and a glass of water. Certainly, you can understand that Bard says he’s trying to concentrate on a complicated dish and so can’t have anyone else in the kitchen… it’s just odd that he’s suddenly so focused.

Sebastian is a strange case. He’s not one who engages in too much idle chitchat, so you can believe that he doesn’t want you distracting Bard. Still, something about it strikes you as very strange.

Then there’s MEY RIN, who nearly falls down a flight of stairs in an attempt to run off in the opposite direction when she sees you coming. Even when you try to hurry over to make sure she’s alright, she yells that she’s fine and she needs you to go remake the master’s bed because she mussed it up.

Honestly, your young master might be the worst. CIEL is a bit cold to most people, but today it’s as if he barely has a word for you. He keeps giving you short, clipped orders, without so much as glancing at you.

You like to think of yourself as a resilient person. Today, though… it feels almost as if the entire household wants nothing to do with you. That stings, especially today.

You’re sitting on Ciel’s bed which you’ve just remade, intending to smooth the bedclothes out one last time once you stand up. You can’t help wondering if you’ve done something wrong, or if perhaps your presence simply isn’t a good fit for this household after all. It’s unfortunate, really ― you thought you were getting on so well with everyone.

Maybe not. They’ve all made up some reason to not be around you today, and not one of them has remembered…

Before you know what’s happening, Finny is in the room, so fast it’s as if he were a bullet shot from a gun. “(Name)! (Name)! Come with me, hurry! We need you!”

“Wha ― Finny!!” He’s so terribly strong, all you can really do is let him pull you down the hall. “What’s going on?!”

By the time he stops to answer, the two of you are at the top of the stairs. He takes your hands, gently, and looks in your eyes rather earnestly. “I hope you can forgive us all, but I think we’re about to make up for how confused we’ve made you today!”

You shake your head. “What on Earth do you mean, Finny?”

“Close your eyes and I’ll lead you downstairs! C’mon!”

The only option you have is to do as he says, right? Your curiosity won’t let you just turn around or go down yourself. So you close your eyes, letting him lead you down.

Even after the two of you get down the stairs, he keeps walking you. “Can I open my eyes now, dear?”

“Almost! I’ll tell you when.” A few more steps, and… “Alright, alright! Open them!”

You oblige as he lets go of your hand. What you see when you open your eyes is… the whole rest of the staff gathered in the parlor, along with your master. There are a few decorations strewn about, and a painstakingly detailed two-tier cake sitting on the table.

What’s more, before you’ve even processed everything, everyone chimes in borderline practiced harmony: “Happy birthday, (Name)!” (Well, with the exception of Snake adding in a quiet, “Says Webster.”)

You’re surprised you don’t fall back flat on the floor.

Is this what they were all avoiding you today for? So they could catch you off guard after pretending like none of them remembered your birthday?

Quickly, your eyes start filling with tears, and your hands fly up to cover your face. Oh, it would be so embarrassing to cry in front of Ciel and your coworkers, but… “I-I thought you’d all forgotten…”

“Of course not, my lady.” Sebastian steps forward, reaching to replace Finny’s hands with his. “Our sincerest apologies for making you think that. We had to keep you away until everything was just so.”

“We wanted you t’ ‘ave a special first birthday with us, we did!” Mey Rin pipes up, giving you a bright smile.

Bard clicks his tongue as he lights up the single candle on the cake. “Oi, sorry, it took me way too damn long with the cake, even with Mister Sebastian’s help. We didn’t mean t’ keep you waitin’ quite this long.”

You almost don’t notice Snake walking up beside you, until he gives you a pat on the shoulder. “We’re both new here… says Webster. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one struggling to adjust.”

Ciel silences everyone else by stepping forward. “(Name). I want to officially welcome you to the estate. Like it or not, you’re a Phantomhive servant now. If you don’t feel you can carry yourself with pride for any other reason, do so for that reason.” You swear you see his lips quirk up briefly, though it’s gone as soon as you notice it. “That isn’t a request; that’s an order.”

Sebastian moves his hands from yours to set his on your shoulders, gingerly guiding you forward. “Come, come. You must be looking forward to your cake. Do be sure to make a wish as you blow out the candle, won’t you?”

You look around the room before nodding. You feel so overwhelmed, you don’t even know what to say. “Th… thank you, everyone. Mister Sebastian… Bard… Mey Rin… Finny… Snake… a-and… and Lord Phantomhive. Thank you so much. I… I can’t tell you how much all of this means to me…”

Well, the best gratitude is to make sure your wish is a good one, isn’t it? You take a breath, then lean forward and blow out the candle. Knowing Bard, you’re shocked it isn’t some kind of sparkler.

There’s a scattering of applause among everyone else as you lean back, then Sebastian moves around you to start cutting the cake.

“What did you wish for? Asks Donne.” Snake tilts his head at you, briefly, before eyeing the cake with the gaze of a child in a sweets shop.

“Oh, Snake, you can’t ask her that!” Mey Rin chides. “She can’t say! If she says what it was, it won’t come true!”

“It won’t?! No, I suppose it won’t, Donne…”

Surrounded by people who truly care about you, for the first time in a long time… you feel like you belong somewhere. And you feel like even if you say something, your wish will probably come true. But you’re not taking the chance, because you’ve never wanted a wish to come true more in your life.

I wish… I get to celebrate my birthday here with my new friends next year, too. And the year after that. And every year until they tire of my company.

(Though, you get the sense they never will.)

Notes: When I saw this, I gushed! This sounds so cute and I think it’ll be so much fun to write. That, and this just gave me a new rush of happiness that I really needed right now, so thank you for that!

That said, I hope you enjoy it! I refrained from specifying the age, but I tried to make it very obvious with some comedy inclusion. I may have strayed a little, though, so I apologize.

let’s cover one thing first: he finds you absolutely adorable.

seriously.

despite being the same height as ciel, as well as maintaining a job in a similar area (you both worked under the queen), he couldn’t see you as anything other than a chihuahua walking around in a world full of english mastiffs

though, he was well aware that you were very much capable of taking care of yourself.

you work under the queen for a reason, after all.

which is also how you two met.

at first, he saw you as someone that would be filling in for someone else, possibly even taking up a role that had been presented to you by one of your parents or other family members.

but that was not the case.

your business was booming, and this is when he found out that not only were you of legal age, but very crafty as well.

(he liked to think that you preferred to feint any kind of awareness and have a vast amount of knowledge in all areas to be able to hold a candle to anyone that would try to manipulate, but that was only a theory of his.)

as much as it annoyed him from time to time, he and sebastian could tell that you would be a powerful asset, not only to them, but to the queen.

from that point forward, whenever you two would meet (which was, again, fairly often - the queen!), you two would be able to have almost the exact same thought process.

it was very evident that you knew your way around, and he admired that.

but there was also a side to you which he knew how to pick out.

taunt your height, get kicked.

treat you as an armrest, get kicked.

make sly comments about how you can’t reach something, get kicked.

or, at least, try to get kicked.

(yeah, your height was still an issue on that end.)

otherwise, you started to get used to this.

on days when ciel wanted to be nice and you were free of any work for a time, you two would meet at the phantomhive manor.

whether you were reading next to each other or discussing past events that either one of you asked, something would happen.

and it would more often be bardroy, mey-rin, or finny.

and here is where you and him used your height to your advantage.

from time to time, you’d help out the staff.

ciel had consistently told you that you are a guest and that you don’t have to help those “bumbling idiots”.

you didn’t listen, though.

this is where your height would be either a blessing or a curse.

if the issue had happened in a lower area, you would be quick on the uptake despite the amount of times that someone had tried to stop you.

glass broken? you’d be 100% willing to help and make sure that mey-rin didn’t injure herself while trying to pick it up.

and yes, this typically went over fairly quietly, though sebastian would never hesitate to throw something out there to annoy you.

“miss l/n, it seems as if your height may come in handy. do be careful when picking that up, thought, dear - don’t want you to get crushed, darling.”

“oh, please, sebastian darling - you may not realize or not care to realize this, but i can and will bite your ankles.”

“love, is that really necessary, though?”

“if you keep attempting to taunt me, then yes, it will be made top priority.”

(banter like this was highly encouraged by ciel, though he would never admit this).

on the other hand, though, if the incident had occurred at a taller height?

yeah, you would have to deal with short comments from him while you do things at your level.

“darling, may i ask how the weather down there is?”

“oh hush, you obnoxiously tall demon.”

“oh dear, you are just extremely short.”

(you both knew that wouldn’t happen, though - you would miss him too much, and he’d know where you went almost immediately.)

so, those were fun times.

otherwise, when given the chance to, you two would try to create things together.

rose bouquets, sweets, sometimes even a new prototype for whatever purpose.

times like this are when the jokes would either be completely quieted or completely active.

sometimes, he’d purposely put an item that you could reach easily on a normal day about three shelves higher.

it was, of course, all a ploy to get you to ask for his help with an attempted nonchalant expression, though you were extremely flustered.

other times, he’d let you rest upon his shoulders if you were too tired to try and jump to reach something - these moments also left you flustered, but you didn’t mind.

there was even the rare occasion that, when you two would sit near each other and read (or do whatever you desired), he would allow you to lay beside him.

he noticed how your short frame fit perfectly in comparison to his taller one, and he’d silently gush at the image.

(fun fact: one time, when you had tried to reach a book you had left behind when leaving the room, he had helped you out in the most cliche way possible - he stood behind you and grabbed the book for you, his hand resting on your shoulder. it was an adorable image to the both of you.)

he found these moments to be the most important between you two, the teasing romantic ones were always the ones that got him to become just as flustered as you are.

and, though kisses didn’t happen very often, they were very much sweet and slightly comedic.

since the height difference was so obvious, things went one of two ways: either one of you would adjust your height to reach the other, or you would find a way to even it out and make it romantic.

if it were to go along a more humorous route, the common things were either he would lean down, or you would jump up.

considering both of you were fairly serious, these moments were highly treasured.

sometimes, he would watch you pout and fight back the urge to laugh at the image.

these times, though, he’d fall victim to the cute and childish expression that rested upon your face, and he’d lean down just the slightest.

he’d gaze at you lovingly, and it wasn’t until you would turn to look at him that he’d say something.

“you are quite adorable, lady y/n.”

cue your blush, cue his smirking visage.

“may i kiss you, my dear?”

small silence...

“...yes, you may.”

he laughs at your attempt to fight back the rush of blood to your face as he decides to tease you.

he stopped leaning down and watched as you puffed your cheeks and sighed.

“aren’t you going to kiss me, mr. michaelis?”

“hmm...maybe i might. it would be very much appreciated if you could, possibly, meet me halfway, though, darling.”

cue another huff.

you tried to jump up at him, but you were still unable to reach his height. he met you halfway.

the other times, though - those were when things got really romantic.

these were the moments when you two would get a break from a growing crowd of people at a formal event.

these were the moments when you two would be resting in the garden under the moonlight, surrounded by flourishing roses and carnations.

these were the moments when you two would be sitting next to each other on a bench, around even height as your skirt had lifted you just the slightest.

these were the moments where things would remain quiet yet loving, and though there was still a height difference, things were on much more level ground.

kisses in this moment were also very sweet.

neither one of you had to do much to meet the other.

afterwards, the rest of the night is spent in the midst of the festivities.

so, as a whole?

short jokes, tall jokes, and a surprisingly wholesome relationship for a demon as renowned in the realm as him.

(he may also have taken a slight liking to your soul, but he was very loyal in return to ciel - cuz souls are tasty, yUM-)

Here are my rules to make things easier; when the ball is rolling I will make a master-list!
