Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 27 Review - The Third Test
Wow, it’s already the penultimate episode! I’m going to miss this show once it ends. I do like how after all the action-packed magic fights, this episode lays low on the action as it’s just the party and the mages taking a respite and then the mages take the third test proctored by Serie.
Tumblr media
Fern is mad once again, but this time, she’s angered over the fact that her broken staff had been treated lightly by Frieren. While it’s ideal to get a new staff, Fern is attached to the one she uses because it’s what Heiter gave to her. It’s practically what she has left of Heiter. I think it’s sweet that she always cherishes items that people she cares about give to her like the staff from Heiter, the hair clip from Frieren and the bracelet from Stark. She seems to be someone who keeps things for sentimental value. It was nice to see Fern and Stark hanging out again. Frieren means no harm as she’s just awkward. She still does take the broken staff to get it fixed at Richter’s magic shop. It’s nice to see how much Fern means to Frieren in her own Frieren way.
The third exam is just Serie passing and failing those that deserve it. She may seem like she’s being strict, but she’s not. She did mention to the other proctors that it was mainly because of Frieren that so many mages were able to pass the second portion—even those that weren’t deserving of it. It makes sense as Kanne is too weak-willed to be a first-class mage. Dunste is weak and managed to pass due to Frieren. Scharf and Ehre failed, which makes sense because they’re practically carried by Wirbel. She failed Frieren due to personal bias. Serie seems like those conservatives that do not like change while Frieren doesn’t mind change. Despite her disdain for human mages, Serie finds an interest in Fern who was able to detect the fluctuations in her mana that the other First-Class mages could not. Fern has been around Frieren for a majority of her life, so she can detect these sort of things. Also, it’s obvious that Fern will pass because what’s the point of this arc if she doesn’t pass?
In addition to Serie and Frieren being the antithesis of each other, the way they view magic differs too. Flamme and Frieren’s favorite magic was the flower field magic while Serie finds it boring. Flamme finds the flowers beautiful. Frieren likes it for the same reason, but for another one too: Himmel told her that she once showed the magic to him when he was a small boy lost in the woods and that was when he found magic to be beautiful for the first time. Since Himmel made such an impact in Frieren’s life, it makes sense that she’d love this spell too.
To be honest, I’m going to miss the small interactions from the other mages once this show ends. The way Denken treats Laufen and Richter like his granddaughter and son was way too cute. The way Kanne and Lawine have a frenemy relationship was hilarious but also sweet when the violence is toned down. Wirbel carrying around Ehre and Scharf was hilarious and cute. The unexpected tension between Ubel and Land was interesting to see. I do wonder if they’ll show up again in the future. It also makes me wonder if there will be a Season 2 for this show; I hope so!
Who else do you think will pass and become First-Class mages? What are your thoughts on this episode?

Thai BL Favorites List
Thank you @thatgirl4815 for tagging me! Sorry it took me too long. I guess I’ll be using this game to talk a bit about some of my favorite BL shows (Thai BL particularly), especially in the past 1,5 years. I might have not watched that many shows, honestly, so maybe I couldn’t really answer a question or two and obviously for the rest of the questions my answers would be very much biased and, ehm, extended (sorry in advance for being greedy, and that in no way this would be a brief list).
Favorite Thai BL: My top three (can’t choose one) are A Tale of Thousand Stars, The Eclipse, and My School President.
Favorite Pairing: Not trying to be diplomatic, but this is hard as I usually ended up loving any pairing of any media I was watching at a time. But to go with the ones that permanently own my soul (in chronological order of the said media release); PhupaTian of A Tale of Thousand Stars, KimChay of KinnPorsche, AkkAyan of The Eclipse, SoundWin of My School President, and TienLomfon of La Pluie.
Most Underrated Actor: I would go with Fluke Pusit. I really wanted to see him playing a main character (again). The Shipper was already too long ago, and I don’t think it was even classified as BL (I could be wrong about this, though).
Favorite Character: Another hard question *cry in my watched list*. Ok, I definitely can’t come up with only one, so here’s the array of characters that’s so dear to me for different reasons; Tian (A Tale of Thousand Stars), Akk Pipitphattana (The Eclipse), Akk Itsara (Enchante), Tinn (My School President), and Saengtien (La Pluie).
Favorite Side Character: Also, can’t have only one; Longtae (A Tale of Thousand Stars), Wasuwat (The Eclipse), Tiwson (My School President), and Arm (KinnPorsche).
Favorite Scene in a BL: Let these pictures speak for themselves. Basically almost all AkkAyan and SoundWin scenes live in my head rent free and all are my favorite. Yes, I'm very biased, I know. *cry* These are just a few on top of my list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honorable mentions: PhupaTian and TienLomfon scenes under the stars (unfortunately I don't have any gifs for these, just a still set post for each).
Favorite Line in a BL: For me, nothing can top that “I love you. And I want you to love yourself too.” from Aye to Akk.
Tumblr media
Most Anticipated BL (& why): As much as I wanted to answer with Only Friends, I found myself leaning more and more towards Dangerous Romance and Last Twilight instead. I guess my main reason would be the casts (please I need more JimmySea and also Perth and Chimon). And personally, I think I deal emotionally better watching media with single pair centered story than one with multiple/ensemble pairs.
Healthiest Relationship in a BL: At this point, it’s Tinn and Gun in My School President. If we’re talking solely about the green flags, there might be many others beside these two. But when it comes to the relationship, I don’t remember watching any other more impressive than them.
Most Toxic Relationship in a BL: I can’t really come up with something for this one. When it comes to toxic relationship, I usually avoided watching anything with known one in it at all or I ended up watching them in fast-forward/skipping mode so I don't think it's my place to label them as toxic as I might lose some context on the way.
Guilty Pleasure Series: Currently I don’t have any, I guess. But it used to be TharnType (I resonated a lot with Type and his anger issue) and/or Together with Me (I just can’t say no to MaxTul in any kind of media, I think).
I’m back to my ‘too shy to tag’ mode again. So, if anyone seeing this and would like to participate (this is fun!), please consider yourself tagged 🤍
Ps: adding an extra of my favorite scene.

Harlem. Season 2. 2.9 to 2.24. Just like Season 1 I binged this. I waited for a few episodes to air before I started. That way I could get through them quick. I really loved this season. I loved it a lot and I'm glad I binged it because had I watched it week by week I would have felt the pace and found it slow, due to Quinn's lack of story pass her breakup. They kind of stayed on that for a few episodes before getting to her mental health issues and I would have really felt that dragging.
I love everything about this show and I wish it was longer or came on more often. The first season I saw in December 2021 and Amazon released the full season at once, I believe, and it was short. This season seemed even shorter. Just like the first season, Angie is still my favorite but Quinn is making her way up to be my #1 too. I loved hearing her accent more in this season. I love all of the Caribbean elements. I just love all the FUCKING VIBES HERE!
Score: 4/5
**(bottom two photos are from season 1)

Some tips to help you improve your writing style:
1. Read widely: Reading a variety of genres and authors exposes you to different writing styles and helps you develop a broader vocabulary and an understanding of various sentence structures. For example, if you want to improve your descriptive writing, read books by authors known for their vivid imagery like J.R.R. Tolkien or Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
2. Write regularly: Like any skill, writing improves with practice. Set aside dedicated time for writing, whether it's a journal entry, a short story, or an essay. Consistency is key. By writing regularly, you'll become more comfortable expressing your ideas and develop your unique voice.
3. Be mindful of your audience: Tailor your writing style to suit your target audience. Consider their level of familiarity with the subject matter, their interests, and their expectations. For instance, if you're writing a scientific paper for experts in the field, use technical language and provide in-depth analysis. On the other hand, if you're writing a blog post for a general audience, use accessible language and relatable examples.
4. Use active voice and strong verbs: Active voice makes your writing more direct and engaging. It emphasizes the subject performing the action rather than the action itself. For example, instead of saying "The ball was thrown by John," use "John threw the ball." Strong verbs also add clarity and power to your writing. Compare "He walked slowly" with "He sauntered" or "He ambled."
5. Vary sentence structure: Experiment with different sentence lengths and structures to maintain reader interest. A mix of short, medium, and long sentences can create rhythm and flow. For example, a series of short, punchy sentences can build tension or convey urgency, while longer sentences can provide detailed explanations or set a contemplative tone.
6. Use precise and vivid language: Choose words that convey your meaning precisely and evoke vivid imagery. Instead of saying "The flower looked pretty," you could say "The delicate blossom bloomed in vibrant shades of crimson and gold." Specific and descriptive language brings your writing to life and engages the reader's senses.
7. Edit and revise: Good writing often requires multiple rounds of editing. After you finish a draft, take the time to review and revise your work. Look for clarity, coherence, and grammar errors. Consider whether each sentence contributes to the overall message and whether the organization of your ideas flows logically. Don't be afraid to make significant changes if they improve your writing.
8. Seek feedback: Share your work with trusted friends, colleagues, or writing groups. Constructive feedback can help you identify blind spots and areas for improvement. Consider their suggestions while maintaining your unique voice and style.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 21 Review - Clash Between Geriatrics
What’s a better way to end the first part of the exam than with an epic magic showdown between two geriatrics? Unfortunately for Denken, the geriatric woman much older than him defeats him. He did put up a good fight, though. And speaking of old people, we also get an introduction to Serie, Flamme’s elf master, meaning she’s an elf much smarter and much older than Frieren. This should be interesting.
Tumblr media
The battle between Frieren and Denken was great. It shows off how strong these two are as mages, but even if Denken has been around for a long time, Frieren has been around longer. Despite that, these two may have been fighting as enemies, but it looks more like a rivalry as both are mages who enjoy the fun of searching and discovering magic rather than having it handed to them. Because Frieren and Fern’s spells are a bit basic, it’s finally nice to see a mage with some fancy spells. The way Denken used that fire magic was gorgeously animated. His sparkly light spell was great too. Despite that, Frieren shows why she’s stronger; in fact, that old trinket she carries around is proof that she is the last Great Mage. Yep, she’s basically Saitama in this universe. I also like the scene where Frieren breaks the barrier to give Kanne the advantage against Richter. I do like that she’s watching over her teammates like they’re her granddaughters and that she wanted to give Serie a big middle finger after she had recalled her encounter with her. The way it was animated was great.
The battle with Kanne and Lawine against Richter was also quite nice. It’s like watching an Earthbender against two water benders but one only uses ice while the other is lacking natural water and is just defending. Though, I do wonder why Kanne couldn’t just use her sweat. I do like that despite having the advantage, Richter’s main flaw was that he was looking down on his opponents. They were kids, so he was holding back in a way? Once Frieren broke the barrier, Kanne used a powerful water spell and destroyed Richter; no deaths here, by the way. Also, I’m sorry to all the Avatar: The Last Airbender fans because you guys do not deserve to have the magnificent show get butchered by Netflix.
Now that I’m done talking about the battles, I want to talk about two major characters. The first I’ll be talking about is Serie. She’s an elf who was Flamme’s master. Because of her long live, she has accumulated and learned practically every spell in existence. So, she can give spells to mages too. She’s like a mother computer of spells in a way. From her screen time here, she’s easily the opposite of Frieren in every aspect; she’s like an antithesis of her of sorts. Serie has stayed in one place, gathered knowledge and doesn’t seem to care about people outside of mages. Frieren was once like that, but meeting Himmel, Heiter and Eisen changed all that. Realizing how much of an impact Himmel had left on her, she seeks to collect magic but also make connections with people. That’s how she managed to be where she is now because of her desire to connect. Other than that, not much else is known about Serie. Her voice is very deep. She’s voiced by Mariya Ise, who you might know to be the voice of Killua from Hunter x Hunter and Ray from The Promised Neverland. Ise is excellent with voicing boys and girls; she has distinct voices she use for the characters she plays. The voice that she uses for Serie is normally the one she uses when voicing boys, but Serie is a girl. I was surprised to see her use her young boy voice for this character. I like it though. It gives the impression that she’s the opposite of Frieren who has a soft voice.
Tumblr media
The next character and the last major thing I want to talk about for the review is Denken. He’s surprisingly an intriguing character. I never knew someone could write this guy so cleverly. Props to the authors. At first, he may seem like the typical old guy, but he shows off rationality, wisdom and logic in his scenes. I like him a lot now that he had a lot of screen time in this episode. He knows when to back down, but he knows when to charge in. I like how he grabbed Richter with his legs to save him from being washed away by Kanne’s magic. My favorite scene with him was when he decided to throw hands against a team that had a Stille but lost a teammate. He had run out of mana due to his fight with Frieren, but that didn’t mean he lacked options. I never expected the old man of all people to settle things with an old-fashioned beat down; he won too given that his team passed!
Tumblr media
There’s also a scene with Stark at the very end where he’s sort of enjoying the days without Fern and Frieren, but he also kind of misses them. Stark feels like a husband who’s wife and mother-in-law went on a business trip, so he has to fend for himself for a few days. Maybe I just see it like that because I ship Fern and Stark together.
Now that the first day of the exam ended, what will the second day be about? I’m a bit excited as the next round, no one is teamed up anymore. They’re all on their own. Maybe we can see Lawine and Kanne fight? Frieren and Fern fight? If anything, I’d like to see a rematch between Wirbel and Ubel with them going all out now. What do you want to see in the next round?

My Drama Universe 2022 Wrap-up
For someone who’s been fussy about being in a drama-slump this year (well, k-drama slump to be exact), this wrap-up list sure proved otherwise. Not as extensive as what others might have, perhaps, but these are what showed up to me this year that I willingly embraced consumed. Mostly BLs and Thai’s series, not all that I picked were airing this year, some aired year(s) back. Even for the ones airing this year, not all I watched live. So, it will probably cloud my perception of the show, somehow. However, I’m a firm believer of that not every show is for everyone (or, in this case, me), and that sometimes I had better experience of consuming certain shows when I watched it later after its airing period in my own pace.
A bit of story nobody asked. I’ve been watching Asian tv series / movies since the mid-end 90s. Started with mostly J-drama(s) and very occasionally C/Tw-drama(s), and then followed by an intense past decade of mostly K-drama(s). It was only at the beginning of this year that I’ve been exposed to Th-drama(s) and BLs (or QLs in general) and that was partly due to some major changes I had this year (moving back home to a time zone 12-hours ahead after 4-5 years being away in a foreign land + the series of reverse culture shock). Diving into these media has somehow given me a new kind of comfort I didn’t know I needed at the time. A comfort I know I will still be seeking for the next years to come. And since I’ve made this Tumblr page as my safe zone, why not include a yearly recaps/wrap-up list for my own documentation, also as an index to refer to if later I decide to make some Best-of-2022 kind of posts.
Anyway, I don’t do quantified rating here, I’m just giving some little hearts or highly subjective brief commentary shouts, if any. But if anyone would like to talk or share some thoughts about some of these shows with me, feel free to drop by the comment or my dm or ask box :)
Oh, and when I said little hearts, I mean these:
🤍 (white) - the show owns my soul, period.
🖤 (black) - it’s my top-something-kind-of shows.
❤️ (red) - loved any aspect of the show: the stories / the tropes / the character(s) / pair(s) / the music / the aesthetics.
Ok, now, the list(s) will go under the cut. A little notes: I didn't separate them based on the genre (QL/non-QL) or the regions for my own convenience.
First, here’s the list of the shows I watched and finished this year, supposedly in a chronological order I picked them (but maybe some were off the timeline -- I didn’t really track them real time, unfortunately):
F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers (Thailand 2021-2022) -- I watched almost all adaptation of Hana Yori Dango, and I must say, the Thai version was better written in most parts. Also, Kavin-Kaning was cute here, almost a match to the Korean’s counterpart: So YiJeong - Chu GaEul <3
🤍 Kieta Hatsukoi (Japan 2021) -- my first love, ever, in BL. I adore this show so so much!
❤️ 2gether + Still 2gether (Thailand 2020) -- not gonna lie, these ones gave me comfort in an unexplainable way.
❤️ TharnType (Thailand 2019) + TharnType 2: 7 Years of Love (Thailand 2020) -- you can say anything about this show or everything about it, but to me, this gave me my #1 comfort character: Type Thiwat Phawattakun, and it hasn’t changed.
Together with Me (Thailand 2017) + Together with Me: The Next Chapter (Thailand 2018) -- the friendship in this show was one of my favorites. Also, this show introduced me to my ultimate favorite BL casting pair: MaxTul. But my most favorite part? Their hometown by the river in the Amphawa district.
My Husband in Law (Thailand 2020) -- what to say more: a drama, that I enjoyed but will not revisit.
❤️ Bad Buddy (Thailand 2021-2022) -- the 5th episode’s rooftop kiss arc my beloved, and need to say no more, a comfort show until today.
Cupid's Last Wish (Thailand 2022) -- my introduction to EarthMix; in a way I was glad I watched this first instead of ATOTS.
❤️ Star and Sky: Star in My Mind (Thailand 2022) -- another comfort show, my adorable Khabkluen & Daonuea; can’t wait to see them again in Our Skyy 2!
🖤 KinnPorsche (Thailand 2022) -- the show that ignites something in me which I cannot label. KimChay will forever hold a chokehold on me. A show that, in one way or another, I might never have a proper closure with. That said, the chaotic that is their casts ensemble had a very special place in my heart.
🤍 Manner of Death (Thailand 2020) -- my forever #1 (not so) BL! TanBunn remains one of my top BL couples.
🖤 HIStory3: Trapped (Taiwan 2019) -- Meng Shao Fei is everything I need in a lead character, and I need him to be with Tang Yi. Also, this show has one of the most adorable second couple.
❤️ To My Star (South Korea 2021) -- this show is strangely beautiful to me. Kang Seo Joon and Han Ji Woo were those unlikely pair that I need to see being together.
Semantic Error (South Korea 2022) -- a beauty that is not for me specifically, but I enjoyed watching the growth of relationship between Chu Sang Woo and Jang Jae Young.
❤️ A Tale of Thousand Stars (Thailand 2021) -- I LOVE everything about this heartwarming show with my whole heart. Tian is another comfort character to me. And the village kids! I just can’t stress enough how I really appreciate and love it that the show made the kids part of every step on Tian’s emotional growth all throughout. The slow burn romance, though, tested my patience to the peak, but in the end, it was all worth it. My very brief halfway thought here and final thought here. Can’t wait to see Moonlight Chicken for more of EarthMix.
🖤 Not Me (Thailand 2021-2022) -- I don’t think any words would suffice to express my thoughts about this show, so I’ll just settle with: it’s fucking brilliant, enough said.
❤️ Old Fashion Cupcake (Japan 2022) -- this show very much feels like a hug and comforting in way that especially when you’re at the age range of TogawaNozue you will understand. The conversation and gradual growth of emotional intimacy between them was something I could relate and reflect to.
Tonhon Chonlatee (Thailand 2020-2021) -- I’m a big fan of mutual pining, but not so a big fan of last minutes reveal. That said, this was a show with another favorite friendship squad.
Blacklist (Thailand 2019) -- watched this during my The Eclipse era mainly because of First and Khaotung were in it. I liked the overall story and the theme it brought up, but more especially I loved the cast ensemble and their chemistry with one another.
🖤 55:15 Never Too Late (Thailand 2021-2022) -- this was my first time watching a Thai series with a kind of slice-of-life genre, and I love it, such a realistically beautiful takeaway about youth and regret. Another lovely casts ensemble with my favorite performances of Khaotung and View.
❤️ Vice Versa (Thailand 2022) -- an absolute beauty nobody could convince me otherwise! The aesthetics (and clearly the budget) of both audio and visual were on a whole different level. I adore JimmySea’s chemistry (and so I will definitely tune in for Last Twilight). The only thing I missed was Talay’s job as a colorist. Would’ve loved to see it more incorporated during his time in the parallel universe.
🤍 The Eclipse (Thailand 2022) -- this show owns my soul. AkkAyan is my everything. I lose my mind here but would love to experience the getting lost for any one more time. As imperfect as it was, this will always be that special show for me.
Big Dragon (Thailand 2022) -- a dynamic that’s not for me but I stayed until the end with no complaints regardless. If anything, the color-coded lighting and sets of this show were actually something I believe to mean something more.
Love in the Air (Thailand 2022) -- not gonna lie, I’m here mostly for the depiction of the architectural students’ life (which brought some nostalgia in me) instead of the romances; dropped a bit during the few last episodes of PayuRain and picked it up again once PrapaiSky started. I love Sky and he must be protected at all costs, yet I found Prapai to be that exact figure Sky needed. I was aware of the talks within the fandom about this one, and I stayed with my take.
❤️ Enchanté (Thailand 2022) -- this one comes as the nicest surprise for me this year. It might not have the best twist of the story of all time, but I did enjoy every turn and the eventual reveal. As a diehard fans of friend-to-lover trope, I had an instant massive crush on Akk Itsara (as well as a silent and slowly whinny ‘why why whhhyy’ toward Theo) only the heaven understands. The music elevates every emotion I felt. The aesthetics were specifically made for me. My highly subjective full thoughts here.
Fish Upon the Sky (Thailand 2021) -- my introduction to PondPhuwin, and what a chemistry! This show prepared me mentally for the rollercoaster of pinched heart that is Never Let Me Go.
Choco Milk Shake (South Korea 2022) -- adorable! A cuteness that’s not really for me, but cute, nonetheless.
And then, this list is for the shows that I’m still watching or still ongoing, and most likely will finish:
The Warp Effect (Thailand 2022-2023) -- a chaos I’m looking for ever since Love Shuffle.
Never Let Me Go (Thailand 2022-2023) -- a new (hard) obsession detected. (a reminder that I need to make a specific tag for this as I did My School President)
My School President (Thailand 2022-2023) -- they’re cute, so cute, the cutest thing I’ve ever watched! I love these babies so so much!!! And the thematic music? My everything! -- I scream a lot about them here.
Between Us (Thailand 2022-2023) -- so far, I’m loving all the relationships in this show, but most especially the friendship trio Team, Pharm, Manow - they’re everything I wanted to see in a squad!
Remember Me (Thailand 2022-2023) -- I got a mixed feeling about this one, but Champ’s storyline hits too close to home it hurts as much.
Gaus Electronics (South Korea 2022) -- hilarious! I adore the consistency of thematic advert on each episode.
The Shipper (Thailand 2020) -- with this one, I am now convinced there are no roles that First and Ohm could not tackle.
And here, for the ones I’ve started (mostly 1-2 or some more episodes in) but as of now the mood just never right enough to continue. Most likely will still be on my list next year, so I am temporarily reserved my commentaries.
3 Will Be Free (Thailand 2019)
10 Years Ticket (Thailand 2022-2023)
609 Bedtime Story (Thailand 2022-2023)
Cruel City (South Korea 2013)
Dark Blue Kiss (Thailand 2019)
Extraordinary Attorney Woo (South Korea 2022)
First Love: Hatsukoi (Japan 2022)
Ghost Doctor (South Korea 2022)
Grid (South Korea 2022)
I Told Sunset About You (Thailand 2020)
Love Between Fairy and Devil (China 2022)
My Liberation Notes (South Korea 2022)
Taxi Driver (South Korea 2021)
The King's Affection (South Korea 2021)
Triage (Thailand 2022)
Lastly, the ones that I dropped (but who knows I’m gonna pick it up again later):
Cutie Pie (2022) - dropped at later episodes.
LITA (2022) - dropped PayuRain’s part at around episode 4 or 5; picked up again when PrapaiSky’s part started.
So, that’s it, that’s my wrap-up. I hope 2023 treats us better and allows us many many more good shows to devour!
