For @starkerhowlter and many thanks to @the-mad-starker for being an amazing beta.
It had been a shitty day, if Peter were being honest. His chem lab partner had failed to do their portion of the lab, and the professor didn’t particularly care about Peter’s plight. His grade didn’t hinge on it but it wasn’t fair to lose 5% of his grade just because his partner was a trust fund baby who couldn’t care less about college. And sure, Tony paid for everything so Peter wasn’t in danger of losing his funding if he didn’t get an A in the class, but it was a pride thing. Peter worked hard and his grades reflected it. He loved to make Tony and May proud, loved to feel like he would one day be able to match Tony’s brains and achievements and be more than just a boy toy to his peers.
“Welcome back, Mrs. Boss,” Friday said as Peter entered the private elevator.
“Is he ever going to let me change that back?” Peter groaned. “It was a joke. I said it one time to Pepper.”
“Sorry, Mrs. Boss, but Boss’s orders,” Friday replied teasingly. Peter started to reply when Friday flickered the lights and Peter felt the elevator shift directions.
“Friday?” Peter asked, senses going to full alert.
“Boss just began experiencing a panic attack. I am redirecting you to the lab,” Friday said. Peter frowned but nodded.
“Thank you, Friday. Get me to him asap.”
Since they’d started dating Peter’s sophomore year of college, they’d both handled their fair share of panic attacks. It had been embarrassing at first but then they’d both realized they just wanted to help, to make it better. After that, they worked to put together systems and protocols for each other until it became old hat.
Peter grabbed blankets from his station as he headed for where Dum-E sat beeping forlornly.
“It’s ok, bud, we’ll take care of him,” Peter promised. It may have been routine to an extent, but it still made Peter’s chest ache when he saw his fiance on the floor, panic on his face, his breathing coming in sharp gasps. “Hey Tones. Can you breathe with me?”
Peter drew exaggerated breaths, pulling Tony’s hand onto his chest so he could feel Peter’s heart beat and the rise and fall of his chest.
“I’m here, Tony,” Peter said. “I’m here. Everything is ok. Everyone is fine. Just breathe with me.”
Peter continued speaking soothingly while breathing deeply, and slowly, Tony matched his breathing to Peter’s.
“Hey, there you are,” Peter said softly. “Want to talk about it?”
“Just triggered a memory,” Tony said softly. Peter nodded and grabbed a blanket.
“Floor or couch?”
“Here.”
Peter grabbed a few more blankets and the soft floor chair he had found with Tony in mind. Without a word, he set the chair down and gently lifted Tony onto it, then tucked him in with the blankets. Dum-E brought a few water bottles over, and Peter sat with his back pressed against Tony’s side as they waited out the jitters.
At first, Peter tried to do homework, but he was still frustrated from the lab, so he switched to his phone instead. That worked for all of three minutes before his hands were itching for something to do.
Luckily, all it took was a quickly typed message to Friday, and Dum-E brought him a lego kit that Tony kept down here for when Peter just needed to zone out.
It was a small kit but that was ok. Peter had other kits if he finished this one before Tony was ready to move again. The click of pieces was soothing, and Peter felt his muscles slowly relaxing as he got further and further into it. Before he knew it, the model was done and Peter looked up to see Dum-E with another one.
“Thanks, buddy,” Peter said. This one was bigger, so Peter started by sorting pieces before getting started. He was barely two pages into the instruction when Tony surprised him and started grabbing pieces. The older man didn’t say anything so Peter just shrugged and kept working, only to frown when he couldn’t find a piece he needed a few steps later.
“It’s the ten year anniversary apparently,” Tony said out of nowhere. “Of the Battle for New York. They ran a special on the news. Showed the old footage of the fight, and ah- my impromptu trip to space.”
“That must have been hard to watch,” Peter said softly, intentionally staying focused on his build. Tony always found it easier to talk when he wasn’t put on the spot.
“You’d think after ten years I’d be over it,” Tony said, and Peter could hear the bitterness in Tony’s voice. “Instead, all it took was 30 seconds of shaky camera work to make it feel like I was trapped again.”
“It’s been nearly 7 years since the Vulture, and I still have nightmares about being crushed,” Peter admitted. “Not as often, and it’s been a lot better since I’ve had you to wake up with, but they’re still there.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Tony asked softly.
“Everyone else runs into stuff like that and just seems to keep going,” Peter said with a shrug. “I figured since no one ever talked about it that it was either just me or they handled it and it eventually went away so there wasn’t a point in mentioning it.”
“But you know I still struggle,” Tony pointed out.
“Yeah, but like, you worry about the next attack and keeping everyone safe,” Peter replied. “Things that are still active threats. You never talk about the old stuff. About Afghanistan or New York, or Ultron.”
“Even now, they’re hard to talk about,” Tony admitted, and Peter shot him a gentle smile.
“That’s ok. You don’t have to talk about things if you’re not ready,” Peter said, parroting back what Tony always told him. “Though it normally makes it easier to manage. At least, that’s what I’ve been told.”
“Ok, smartass, no using my words against me,” Tony grumbled but Peter could see his lips twitching as the older man fought to hide his smile.
“Hey, you’re like the smartest guy I know,” Peter said, his smile even bigger. “Who else’s words am I supposed to use?”
“Your own are just fine,” Tony said, giving Peter a pointed look.
“I’ll consider it,” Peter retorted. Silence fell between them again but it was much more comfortable, and they both continued clicking legos together.
“Tony, have you seen this 4 by 1 by 1?” Peter asked, pointing to the book.
Tony just shrugged, and Peter looked more closely at what Tony was doing. For the first time, Peter realized whatever Tony was building looked nothing like the picture on the kit.
“Tony, what are you making?” Peter asked, confused.
“Just wait, nearly done,” Tony said, completely focused. Peter did, watching silently as Tony kept grabbing pieces, and even stole a few from Peter’s pile. When the older man was done, Peter still wasn’t sure what he was looking at.
“Tony?”
“What, can't recognize a web shooter configuration just because it’s made of legos?”
Peter examined the legos more closely and realized Tony was right. It was like the inside of part of his web shooter.
“How? Why? Tony?” Peter questioned, fighting laughter. “What am I supposed to do with this?”
“Put it on display with your other ones of course,” the man said confidently. “It’s a one of a kind Tony Stark special after all. Now, how about you tell me what’s got my little spider worked up.”
“Let’s move to the couch first,” Peter said with a sigh. “I want proper cuddles.”
“Of course, babe,” Tony said with a gentle smile. Peter helped Tony up and they dragged their blankets to the couch.
It took a bit of work to get everyone arranged comfortably, but soon, Peter had his head on Tony’s shoulder, curled up along the length of his body.
“So what happened, Tesoro?” Tony asked.
“My lab partner didn’t complete their portion of the lab so we failed it,” Peter said, struggling to keep his voice even. “It’s only 5% of our grade but the professor won’t even let me redo it for partial credit.”
“I’m sorry, Tesoro,” Tony said, placing kisses on Peter’s head. “Seems like a bad day for everyone, huh?”
“Yeah. We’ll be ok though,” Peter said with a shaky smile.
“Of course we will,” Tony said confidently. “We have each other after all.”
Later, after Tony’s hands had stopped shaking and Peter didn’t feel like crying, they had Friday order pizza and put a movie on. And when Tony wasn’t looking, Peter grabbed the lego web shooter and pocketed it to put with his collection. After it, it was a Tony Stark special, and Peter always took care of those.
