4 Reasons Why Disability Pride Month Should be in March
(And 3 Reasons Why Disability Pride Month Should Stay in July)
(with links)
Reasons for March:
The First: March 1 is the International Disability Day of Mourning (Website: Content warning for lists murder victims and information about their cases). This day is for commemorating and mourning Disabled people who've died at the hands of their family members and caregivers because of their disability.
(This, BTW, is why the main field of the Disability Pride Flag is Black)
The Second: March 12 is the anniversary of the mass protest led by ADAPT (website), which included "The Capital Crawl" (YouTube short; proper closed captions, eye contact), which finally spurred the Senate to pass the American With Disabilities Act, after it had been stalled and delayed for years.
The Third: March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day (Website) recognized by the U.N. -- for what that's worth -- since 2012.
The Fourth: Having our own Pride Month immediately before Autism $peaks's month-long propaganda campaign might just take some wind out of their sails (or should that be "money out of their sales"?).
Reasons for July:
The First: July 26, 1990 is the day when George H. W. Bush actually signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law (Transcript of his remarks to the gathered audience at that ceremony). And it's important to remind people that the law actually exists.
The Second: Overall, there is a deep and strong current of ableism/disablism that runs through heteronormativity, such that any sexual/romantic, or queerplatonic, relationship between an abled person and disabled person is treated as "kinky," regardless of the sexual and romantic orientations of the people involved. So there's potential for a natural alliance between the Disability and Queer Communities, and it makes sense that our pride months are side by side. According to this 2019 PDF infographic from the Movement Advancement Project, 40% of trans adults, 40% of bisexual men, 36% of lesbians, and 36% of bisexual women report having a disability, compared to 27% of the "general population" having a disability. And those of us in the broad overlap of that Venn Diagram deserve two whole months of celebration.
The Third: It's already established as Disability Pride Month, and moving it now might result in loss of whatever recognition it's garnered so far.

1-7-23//shoutout to zebra for making a mildliner named "mild lavender" and having it be dark blue. it is not even a little bit purple. also why is the green one also blue. zebra why are you naming your mildliner colours like this. anyway june is over! i tried to draw a rainbow butterfly but one wing ended up bigger than the other and there is of course the issue of the incredibly blue-toned cold colours. i was born in june 19 years ago. i was sick on my birthday because i accidentally took too much antidepressant but i took two whole naps on my birthday so it was one of the better birthdays in the past few years

In my timezone it’s still June so, one last time, for the time being, happy queer pride month everybody! The month may end, but the pride doesn’t.
And also, July is disability pride month! So I can keep saying happy pride month! I’m not disabled, at least I don’t think I am, but I’m more than happy to root for you if you are! Happy disability pride month then! Cheerio fella’s!

My gender hoard has shrunken massively, I've gone from I don't know how many labels to 5. And I'm very happy about that as it means that I know my identity better and can better pin-point it. Now my gender labels are: Elsegender, Maverique, Endity, Chaosgender and Genderfluid

Summary: Beau of the Fifth Column talks about a meme going around Conservative™ Twitter and Facebook that "the Gays" get a special month, but military vets don't.
He points out the truth that they actually do, and it's May. He suggests that if you have a family member who says this to you, tell them about May (And when it is still May, to wish them a happy Military Appreciation Month), ask them where they heard that Vets don't get a month, and why they should trust anyone who lies to them while using military veterans as a political prop.

we need to make peace with the fact that "i am a girl and retroactively i always was even when i didn't personally think so" and "i am a girl but i used to be a boy" are both equally valid ways to be transfem and both are punk af bc they equally reject societal norms of what a person's gender experience should be
