i. Intro…

The Italian language is one of the more phonetic languages, meaning each letter (or combination of letters) only make one specific sound each.

You must also pronounce every sound possible in a word with the exception of the letter H, which is silent. For example, in the word video, you would pronounce it vee-day-oh. Even in longer words such as cinquantasette which would be pronounced Cheen-quahnta-sehteh

Of course, as mentioned with the letter H, there are some exceptions to this. For example, with the combinations of letters.

ii. The alphabet + the sound each letter makes

— the Italian alphabet is missing a few of the English alphabet letters. Namely J, K, W, X, and Y.

A - Ah

B - English B

C - English letter K

D - English D

E - eh/ay

F - English F

G - English hard G (like the word green)

H - silent

I - ee

L - English L

M - English M

N - English N

O - oh

P - English P

Q - English Q

R - rolled R

S - almost always S, almost never sounds Z

T - English T

U - OO

V - English V

Z - English Z

iii. Combinations of letters + the sounds they make

— Just like in English, Italian has some combinations of letters that change the sounds of the letters themselves. Some are harder to pronounce for foreigners.

Ci/Ce - when C is followed by an I or an E, the C sound then becomes the English CH sound. The exception to this is if there is an H between the two letters (Chi/Che). The C sound then stays the same as normal.

Gi/Ge - when G is followed by an I or an E, the hard G sound then becomes the English J sound. The exception to this is if there is an H between the two letters (Ghi/Ghe). The G sound then stays the same as normal.

Gli - the best way I can think to describe this is how the LL is pronounced in the English word million. Almost like a rounded L sound. This sound is especially hard for foreigners.

Gn - like the N in the word onion.

— some examples with these would be Cinque (five), Giorno (day), Luglio (July), Bagno (bathroom)

In the resources masterpost you can find some links for this. In the "various internet Italian links" section, there are a few free online resources with - books/pdfs (the links on the 4th line. Some of these are also audiobooks and some have both ITA-ENG -bilingual- text: you can also find famous children's fairytales like Cinderella in Italian, eg.. Not sure if I mentioned there in some list but I suggest to check the website "liberliber.it" as well, js); - a bunch of Rodari's poems for kids ("Ferragosto" and the others on the same line. I translated some of these, if you need a translation also for others just let me know); - a couple of links more about children's pdfs (most famous children's stories again)/nursery rhymes (links on next line) - children's songs + Rai for kids (in the listening/watching subsection) - many news, magazines links

I'm sorry I'm not copying everything here but I prefer to leave just suggestions/indications: you can also check the other links I put there as maybe there's more for you (and I don't remember). If some links don't work it could be that too much time has passed (sorry I haven't cheked them in a while), or something has changed: you can ask me ofc.

Also, one famous physical comic for children is Topolino (and the similar weekly comics like Zio Paperone -you can find them in the website). It's not even just for kids tbh as also adults enjoy it, but it's generally easy... sometimes it may hide references to our culture/situation, but ofc you can ask if you need. There are other comics but maybe they're a little too complex to understand if you're a beginner, so I will suggest them later on if you want.

italian words / slang feel like yall should know

Tocca -> pronounced as (toh-kka), slang, literally means “touch (it)” , used as a way to say “must do it”

ex.

A: dobbiamo uscire uno di ‘sti giorni

(we must hang out one of these days)

B: tocca

gls / gia lo sai -> this one’s a bit harder, gls is the slang in text, its pronounced as “gee-ah l-oh s-ah-ee” but look it up cus idk how to explain jt🤧 , it literally means “you already know” and it’s also what it means, but more as slang so for example

A: hai preso i bocaditos alle macchinette?

(Did u buy the bocaditos at the vending machines?)

B: gia lo sai

B buys a LOT of bocaditos. A knows that. Rethorical question.👍

Pefforza (per forza/pfz) -> okay so this is kinda both a meme and something people have always said. It’s pronounced as “p-eh-ff-oh-r-z-ah” , or in a more traditional way, “p-eh-r f-oh-r-z-ah” , and literally translated it means “for strong” but it’s basically for real (fr = pf). The meaning is pretty much like “tocca”. The meme part…look up Dario Moccia Peffozza👍 also, it can be used in three ways.

ex. 1

A: chiede anche i verbi per forza

(she’ll ask for the verbs too for sure)

ex. 2

A: dobbiamo fare i compiti

(We must do our homework)

B: per forza?

(Must we?)

ex.3 (like tocca)

A: sta sera dobbiamo portare 20€ a testa

(tonight we need to bring 20€ each)

B: pefforza

Essì -> soo if you’re studying italian you may notice the similiarity with the pronoun “essi” which is “they” , but it has nothing to do wirh it🤧 basically it’s a mix of “eh” + “si” , so it jsut means “yeah”

ex.

A: dai ci sta*

(i mean it’s good)

B: essì

*ci sta -> this is kinda hard to explain but i’ll try…first of all it’s pronounced as “chee stah” (sounds like cheese star with a weird accent🎅🏻). Okay so the meaning is a bit harder to explain…literally it means “it fits” but it has none to do with that. It’s used as a way to say something is decent. So, not good, noot bad, it’s aight.

ex.

A: com’è il sushi là?

(How’s the sushi there?)

B: ci sta

“Ncsp” on the other hand it’s a way to say “ain’t aight”, and it’s mostly used on text.

Fiat 600 Multipla, 1995 (1956), by I.DE.A. A restomod Multiple that was presented at the “Torino Design” exhibition, the Institute chose the car as the symbol of Italian car design and an example of the incredibly efficient use of space, seating 6 people in its 3.5 metre length. The interior was updated with modern materials and technology including airbags while the exterior was painted to match the interior. The car remains on display at the Museo dell'Automobile in Turin.

Aggettivo qualificativo: where to put it in a sentence?

IMPORTANT: This is an advanced Italian grammar post. If you're a beginner please take your time to get here. Learn about all the parts of the speech and get accostumed to how Italian works (it has loads of rules and exceptions so try to focus on building easy sentences first). For now, simply add the adjective after the noun it refers to: this is generally considered a "neutral" position for adjectives (and you can use them in this position to introduce other complements and make more difficult sentences too -see below).

Italian sentences add infos "to the right": they grow with infos after the main thing is stated. They follow a [subject - verb - object - other complements] pattern. This pattern can change though, cause of stylistic choices or cause the speaker wants or needs to put the stress on specific parts of the speech (eg. "Bello, questo vestito!" instead of "Questo vestito è bello!" => these two sentences both translate as "This dress is nice!" but in the first sentence, we want to stress we find it very nice so we put "bello" first), or give them a slightly different acception.

THE AGGETTIVO QUALIFICATIVO: Generally speaking, the aggettivo qualificativo specifies a characteristic of the noun it refers to. According on the situation, this characteristic can be fundamental (Portami la cartellina blu, per favore = Bring me the blue folder, please -> I want the blue one, not the red or the yellow or any other I have) or just "a plus" (Ho una cartellina blu = I have a blue folder -> Fun fact...?). It's up to the speaker's intention.

SO, WHERE TO PUT THESE ADJECTIVES? The aggettivo qualificativo can move its position according on how objective (more fixed) or subjective (less fixed: as seen, the speaker can move it to stress infos and bring their opinion) the characteristic it expresses is. To make it a little easier though, there are a few rules for you to check:

->AFTER THE NOUN: - if the adjective specifies a particular characteristic of the noun that makes the noun different from others. eg. Ho visto il maglione nuovo di Luigi = I saw the new sweater of Luigi -> I saw the new one, not an old one. eg. Portami la cartellina blu. = Bring me the blue folder -> the blu one, not another color's one.

- if the adjective is altered (check here): eg. una casa piccolina = a small little house

- if the adjective introduces a complement: eg. una casa piena di piante = a house filled with plants

- if the adjective is a present/past participle of a verb: eg. una casa ristrutturata = a restructured house

-if the adjective originates form a noun and has a relation with the noun it comes with: eg. un biglietto aereo = a plane ticket (aereo => aeroplano = airplane)

->BEFORE THE NOUN: - if the adjective is simply describing but not comparing to others or making the noun different from similar ones (as seen for the "after"). eg. Ho visto il nuovo maglione di Luigi. => simply a Luigi's sweater that is new. I'm not considering the old ones here.

-if the adjective is intended with a figurative acception (that's why to keep it objectively neutral/literal, you need to put it after the noun). So, in general we have: 1) adjective + noun: figurative meaning of the adjective 2) noun + adjective: literal meaning of the adjective eg. una grande casa = a cool/comfortable house; una casa grande = a big house eg. una vecchia amica = an old times' friend, a friend I know since long time; un'amica vecchia = a friend old in age eg. un buon amico = a friend you can rely on; un amico buono = a good hearted friend eg. un alto magistrato = a very important magistrate/official; un magistrato alto = a magistrate/official that is tall (check here for more; reminder that there are exceptions but the figurative acception is to be considered oftentimes, unless the context tells you differently)
