Tumblr media
It had been a few weeks since the summer kick-off beer bust, and you hadn’t seen Kylo in days. You wondered where he had run off to get drunk because he hadn’t bothered to call your landline. It pissed you off, because how did he go from calling you every day to now running around with god knows who? You never met to sound like his coach, who was insistent that he had a bad crowd, but you were always worried about him.
Your mother opened your door, breaking you from your thoughts. You tilted your head to the side, giving her a soft smile.
“Kylo’s on the phone for you,” she spoke, giving you a slight smirk.
Your mom absolutely adored Kylo, she loved when he would come over and stay with you. He was a perfect gentleman to her and to your entire family. She always hoped you two would be together, always mentioning how cute Kylo was. You’d roll your eyes, but secretly always agreed.
You hopped off your bed, walking past your mother to the landline.
“Hello?” You spoke, furrowing your brows.
“Hey, doll.”
You sighed out, a small smile flooding your face. You missed his voice, and wished he was standing in front of you.
“We went to grab Aerosmith tickets.”
“I know, but you haven’t see me in a bit.”
You heard Kylo sigh from the other end.
“I know, but, hey, I got you a ticket. Front row.”
You grinned, hearing that news. You were so, so excited to be able to go to that concert, especially with Kylo.
“What about, her?” You asked, twirling the phone cord in your fingers.
“Not coming,” Kylo responded quickly, assuring you.
The smile on your face grew, feeling relief that you wouldn’t have to be the third wheel.
“I’ve gotta go though, she’s coming over,” Kylo spoke after a moment, instantly killing your mood.
You groaned, rolling your eyes.
“Fine.”
You heard a click after saying your goodbyes, sadly hanging the phone back on the wall. You trudged back to your room, flopping back on your bed.
You didn’t hear from Kylo again for awhile, which made you increasingly upset.
It was five days until the concert when Kylo finally showed up at your house for the first time in forever.
You were super pissed, because why was he ignoring you so heavily? You had spent the time with your friends, so it wasn’t too bad on you, but it still weighed you down.
You stared at him in the doorway, clearing your throat as you looked up at him. He gave you a small smile, letting out a sigh. He went in for a hug, but you moved away quickly. When you looked back up at him, he looked shocked, even a bit sad. You shook your head at him, frowning. Kylo really had expected that you wouldn’t be mad when he showed up randomly to your house?
You stepped outside in front of him, shutting your door behind you.
“Kylo, I know you are not expecting to just step into my house and think that I’m going to just let you, you’ve ignored me for weeks. Go home.”
He scoffed, tilting his head.
“It’s not like I meant it,” he complained, folding his arms across his chest.
“Look, whatever you meant by it, we’ll talk later. I’ve gotta get ready for the party later.”
“At Nick’s?”
“Who else’s?” You retorted, opening your front door and backing inside of it.
Kylo tried to follow you inside, like he had done so many times prior, but you shoved him back gently.
“Go home, Kylo.”
As you shut the door behind you, you sighed, leaning against it for a second. You closed your eyes, before remembering that you did actually have to get ready.
You put on your clothes, did your hair and makeup before heading back downstairs and strolling out to your car. You put the key into your beetle, heading down the street to pick up friend after friend.
You gossiped a bit, letting them know exactly what Kylo had done, being met with scoffs and laughter.
“He really thought he could do that to you?” Your best friend, Tori asked, lighting the joint in her hand.
You pursed your lips, nodding slowly, inhaling off the joint when it was passed to you. You sat there at the red light, joint between your fingers. You passed it behind you to your other friend, relaxing against your seat. Before you knew it, you were at Nick’s house.
You all got out, locking your car before you walked up to the front door. Tori finished off the joint, dropping it to the ground and stepping on it. She knocked on the door, being greeted by none other than Kylo.
He had his somehow-still-girlfriend, Katherine, on his arm. He gave you a warm smile when he saw you and you met him back with a look that could pierce skin. Tori met him with the same look, grabbing your arm and pushing past him, so all five of you could shove past the two of them.
When you were all inside, the other three friends found their way to alcohol, with you and Tori not too far behind them. She handed you a cup, both of you leaning back against a wall, observing where to go next in the house.
You mentioned being pissed at Kylo, which Tori already knew.
“Listen, forget about him, get drunk, get laid, get even,” she responded, grinning at you from ear to ear.
She played a good wing-woman, and was insistent on getting you laid. You’d have multiple conversations that night, Tori including herself and letting guys know how available you were. That was until Adam Sackler made it known that he was there. You had a slight crush on him awhile back, and still found him quite attractive.
“Sackler, how’s it going?” Tori grinned, putting her hand on your lower back to shove you forward.
“Good as always, ladies,” he responded, shooting you a smirk.
Sackler wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you into him. The cologne he used made you melt, he smelled so good. You leaned against him, breathing in deep. You lost yourself in conversation, not even realizing Kylo had joined in after awhile.
He butted in by clearing his throat, arms across his chest. He eyed you and Sackler, clearly showing something was bothering him. It didn’t bother you, in fact it made you happy that he had to see you hanging all over one of his best friends. You took a sip from your cup, turning your head to your so-called best friend.
“Came to ask if you wanted to smoke a joint with the guys, Sackler,” Kylo mentioned, motioning to the front door.
“I’m in,” Sackler responded, letting go of you, taking a drink from his beer.
Kylo grinned at him, letting him move past your small group, turning back to you and grabbing you by the wrist. He shot an apology at Tori before dragging you up the stairs. You fought him, trying to tug away, though it was absolutely no use.
He shoved you back into an empty room, shutting and locking the door behind him.
“What do you think you’re fucking doing?” You raised your voice, setting your drink down on the desk nearby.
“Making sure my best friend, which is you, by the way, knows that Sackler does not want anything romantic!”
“Who said it was romantic, Kylo?” You retorted back at him, mouth slightly agape in disgust at the fact he thought he was somehow saving you.
“You don’t need to get used by that guy!” He shouted, crossing his arms.
You rolled your eyes, scoffing at him.
“Yet you’re getting used by Katherine?” You spoke, an fake innocent look upon your face.
“I’m not getting used, okay?”
His brows furrowed, showing just how flustered he was on his face. You pursed your lips at him, eyes drifting around the room. You couldn’t look him in the eyes, you would end up laughing at him.
You turned away from him, unlocking the door when Kylo forcefully turned you around, pinning you to the wall. Your eyes bounced between both of his, still wondering how you got into this situation.
“Kylo.”
The dark-haired male crashed his lips down onto yours before even mustering a response, his hands above your shoulders, making you unable to move. You pulled away, making a noise of disgust at him, shaking your head.
“Do you think I’m that easy?” You asked, crossing your arms.
Kylo didn’t have a response for that. He backed away from you, a small “sorry” leaving his lips. You had no idea how drunk he was, obviously enough to think he could make up to you with a makeout session.
You turned around from him, finally unlocking the door. As you were exiting the room, Kylo muttered something, but you weren’t exactly sure of what he was saying.
You finally met up with Tori again, who was with the three others, and Sackler. You lacked a drink, which Sackler noticed immediately and offered you to nurse off his freshly opened beer.
The rest of the party was decently enjoyable, involving you on Sackler’s arm the rest of the night. When it was finally time to leave, you pushed your four drunk friends back into your car, leaving them there while you said goodbye to Adam. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders, hanging on him for a minute.
His arms greeted your hips, leaning down and pecking a kiss on your lips. You smiled against his lips, pulling him in for another kiss. When you pulled away, you looked past his shoulder, noticing Kylo in the back, near the front door. His girlfriend was nowhere in sight, yet his eyes pierced through Sackler, straight to you. You pulled away from the male in front of you, backing up to your car.
You leaned against it, Sackler insisting he fit into the car with you guys so you would take him home. You shook your head, giving him a wide grin, you knew exactly what his plans were.
You pecked at his lips once more before fully saying goodnight and entering your car.
***
You lay in your room, two days later.
You were wondering if you were even still going to the concert with Kylo, or if he was really going to take his girlfriend at this point.
You heard a knock at your window, sitting up instantly. You looked over, seeing Kylo trying to open your window. You opened it for him, backing away so he could get into your room.
“Don’t speak to me at the party, then ignore me some more?” Kylo questioned, sitting on your window sill.
You flopped back onto your bed, shaking your head.
“First off, you wanted to be with Katherine the entire night, so no, Kylo, I’m not speaking to you anymore. In fact, I don’t even know that I want to be around you anymore,” you retorted.
Kylo stared at you, open-mouthed at what you had just said. You could tell it instantly hurt his feelings, and as much as you felt bad, it needed to be said.
“Why does it bother you if I’m with Katherine?” He responded, voice a bit shaky, “it bothers you to the point of I’m no good to be around?”
Your hands fell out in front of you, motioning for him to stop talking.
“It’s not that you’re no good to be around, it’s that you’re a dick for cheating on her and letting her do it back.”
He shrugged, still as if to say how that was your problem. He’d be right if you weren’t in love with him.
Kylo stood up in front of you, one hand pushing his locks out of his face. The silence was deafening, both of you sitting there awkwardly, unsure of what to say next. You moved your hands around, moving one to touch your face, looking up at the male in front of you.
Kylo fell to his knees suddenly in front of you, hands on either side of your lap. He just sat there, taking a sharp inhale. His hands moved to your thighs, squeezing them. He looked up at you, pursing his lips.
“I’m sorry for making her more important in my life.”
You gave him a pitiful smile, shrugging at him. You placed both of your hands on his cheeks, rubbing your thumb over his lower lip.
“She just doesn’t deserve you, not like I do,” you whispered, eyes trailing down his face.
A grin widened upon his lips, tilting his head to the side. He got the child-in-a-candy-store look in his eyes once again, leaning up slightly. You felt his breathe touch your lips, but held yourself back from kissing him.
“Nobody deserves me like you do,” he breathed, eyes fixated on your lips.
He leaned in, smashing his lips against yours for what felt like the first time in forever. It was needy, teeth clashing, and absolutely everything you craved from him. He moved on top of you, your legs wrapped around his waist.
Kylo’s hips ground down onto yours, eliciting a moan from you. He hummed against your lips, pulling away for a moment. You both took deep breaths, hips rocking against each other. Kylo’s hand found its way under your shirt, hand squeezing at your breast.
“Need you,” he murmured out, leaning down and biting at your lower lip.
You whined at him, grinding your hips against his again. He nodded, placing his hand on your jawline.
He clashed your mouths together once again, finding a way to get your pants off of you while his lips were against yours. Before you knew it, you felt his cock rubbing against your center, sitting your body up on your elbows.
“No foreplay?” You breathed out, eyeing his cock. Even from the last time you two had sex, you were extremely worried about how he was going to fit,  even then it left you sore for days.
“Sorry, just so excited to be inside of you.”
He delved two fingers inside of you, making you arch your back, moaning out for him. Kylo chuckled, shaking his head.
“I haven’t even done anything to you!”
The innocent look on his face was enough to drive you mad, and you begged for him to make you moan even more for him.
“Tell me what you want me to do to you,” he breathed, pumping his fingers in and out of you. You moaned out for him, finding it hard to make words come out of your mouth.
“Want you to choke me, fuck me like she wouldn’t let you,” you whimpered out when he stopped moving his fingers. He smirked at you, loving what he was hearing.
“You’re fucking dirty when you want to be.”
Kylo pulled his fingers out of you, making you whimper at the loss of contact. He pushed his fingers into your mouth, making you suck on them. You moaned at the taste of yourself, and you were sure he could feel his cock get harder at the sound.
“You’re gonna take all of my cock, got that, doll?”
You nodded, leaving Kylo to thrust into you. You moaned out for him, gasping as you took every inch of him. He bottomed out inside of you, letting out small groans and swears.
Kylo took off at a relentless pace, hand finding your throat. He pressed you into your mattress, his other hand finding countless places on your body to grope and squeeze. He pounded you, the sound of his balls slapping against your skin filling the room. Gasps and soft moans followed, your arms finding his shoulders, scratching at the skin.
He let out groans, loving the feeling of your nails digging into him. He slowed his pace a bit, taking the time to grind up against you between each thrust, making sure you could feel just as good as he was feeling. Kylo filled your neck with plenty of small bites, slapping the side of your ass with his free hand.
He threw both of your legs over his shoulders, both of his hands taking yours and pinning them above your head. You squeezed at his fingers intertwined in yours, clenching your walls around him. He rolled his hips up against yours, making your furrow your brows in pleasure.
Kylo bit at your jawline, sucking and nipping along his journey back to your neck. Muttering how good you were for him nearly sent you over the edge. Before you knew it, you were cumming all over his cock, your head thrown back in pure ecstasy.
Your body tensed up around his cock, practically unable to move. He picked his pace up, thrusting harshly into you as you came down from your high. One of his hands found your clit, rubbing circles, easily overstimulating you. Your body jerked upward, nearly trying to find a way to get away from him, it was too much.
“No no, take it,” he growled.
His hand held your hips down, beads of sweat forming on his forehead as he continued to thrust into you.
“Close,” he growled out, picking up the pace of his hips.
Kylo abruptly stopped and you could feel his thick ropes of cum coating your walls. He slowly began to move as he came down from his high, eyes fluttering as he moved.
When he finally pulled out of you, he fell next to you on your bed, immediately pulling you into his body.
You curled up to him, bodies sweaty, yet perfectly intertwined. Kylo planted a kiss on your forehead, grinning. You listened to his heartbeat, tracing little shapes into his chest. This was the Kylo you wanted to keep forever, the happy completely focused on you version.
“Much better on a bed.”
You chuckled, kissing his chest.
“So much better.”
“You know I love you right?”
You grinned, lifting your head to look at Kylo. He leaned his head up as well, pecking at your lips gently. You smiled against his lips, kissing all over his cheeks and jawline.
“All I wanted was to hear you say that!” You exclaimed, giggling at him, “now, could you please break up with her?”
Kylo got that look on his face again, sighing.
“Yeah, yeah, I will.”
That still didn’t give you any hope, but you really wanted to leave the moment be.

[Riconti] What happens in Vegas... (part 4)
Rated T | 1k words | ao3 link [previous] [next]
Tumblr media
Back at his hotel room, Felix didn’t hesitate using his rediscovered wallet to order room service for both him and Ace.
Getting out of the sun and being able to brush his teeth had already done wonders for Felix's hangover. But it was the reassurance of having Ace sitting in bed next to him, smiling and cracking jokes and calling him all sorts of silly nicknames, that really made Felix feel much better.
And while they were enjoying their coffees and club sandwiches that Felix had ordered, Ace filled him in on the details he'd missed out on the night before.
Apparently, after the shared dinner with the rest of the survivors, it had proved difficult for thirty-something people to agree on which tourist attraction to visit first. Meg had wanted to go on a sightseeing bus, Kate was looking forward to clubbing, and Nea, of all people, had insisted on hitting a strip show.
And while the others had organized splitting into smaller groups, Felix had turned to Ace and asked if he wanted to go to a casino.
"I tried to tell you I didn't mind doing something else, but you said you wanted to see me in my element and having fun. I probably made some ridiculous heart eyes at you right then and there." Ace chuckled. "Poor Jeff didn't read the room right—to be fair, neither did I at that point—and tagged along. He must have felt like such a third wheel, poor boludo."
Oh. That was what the text Jeff sent Felix had meant: the artist had realized what was going on and had excused himself to give them space.
"It was a blast to teach you some of the games,” Ace continued excitedly. “Neither of us won shit, though. And you probably funded my little losing streak more than is healthy—that's why I had to borrow your wallet for the burgers, since I’d lost all of my own money trying to impress you."
Ace shot him a sheepish look over his sandwich, yet Felix felt nothing but fond.
"Don't worry about my money,” Felix said. “But what about you? Will you be able to get home? Do you need—"
"No, see, that's exactly what you tried to do last night too." Ace snorted and shook his head. "Here, Ace, take my black Amex, I don't use it anyway. I had to distract you with pancakes to get you to stop, or you'd have gotten mugged waving that thing around."
Huh. “That's where the pancake place comes in?”
“Yeah. And I was craving something sweet.” Ace shrugged. “But that's also when the… handsiness started.”
Felix nearly choked on his sandwich.
“Oh, god,” he groaned. “I'm sorry. That must have been inappropriate. Did I just…just spring that on you, or…?”
“No, you, uh.” Ace took a strategically timed sip of coffee before continuing. "In the cab, you grabbed my hand. I mean, I'd been flirting my ass off the entire night and you were really…smiley and touchy-feely, but that simple hand-holding was when it really hit me that yeah, this is happening.”
Felix sighed in relief; that didn't sound bad at all. At least he hadn’t gone straight for Ace’s crotch.
“And at the diner you insisted on sitting next to me in the cramped booth. And then, like a true gentleman, you ordered chocolate chip pancakes and a coke for me. So romantic,” Ace sighed exaggeratedly.
Felix cringed. He'd have to take Ace out properly during the weekend to make up for such a lackluster first date.
“Our orders took some time—there was probably just that one girl on the night shift there, gotta love those shitty working conditions." Ace winced sympathetically. "So we talked. Or, well, you kept clinging to me and spilled your heart about how hot and hilarious you find me, and then got upset when I wouldn’t accept the compliments—”
“That doesn't sound like words I would use,” Felix said.
“Okay, you caught me,” Ace said. “It was more like…handsome, and funny, and good friend and smart and selfless, which is obviously complete bull—”
“Oh, look: I'm upset again that you won’t accept the compliments,” Felix deadpanned.
“Yeah, well, that's when you dropped the l-bomb,” Ace said. “And made that whole speech of how much you've wanted me for years but never had the guts to tell me before.”
Felix swallowed the last of his sandwich. “And what did you do?”
Ace smiled. “What I should’ve done a long time ago: I kissed you.”
Felix stared at Ace: at his bedhead, at the faint freckles on his nose, and at the pink lips curved up into an easy smile, and thought about how unfair it was that he didn’t remember kissing him.
Ace’s smile stayed in place even as he slowly set his sandwich down on the nightstand. His gaze dropped down to Felix's mouth and Felix took it as the invitation he hoped it was.
Felix leaned in first and Ace met him halfway.
Blood rushed in Felix's ears and pleasure flooded his body. Ace's lips were dry but warm and his body fit so perfectly against Felix's where they leaned into each other. It was nerve-wracking, finally getting to do this after dreaming about it for so long, but Ace’s mouth stayed firm and languid against Felix’s—after all, Ace had plenty of experience kissing Felix from last night.
Ace’s confidence soothed Felix's own worries. He slanted his mouth and brought a hand up to cup Ace’s neck, causing Ace to hum low and satisfied into the kiss as his hands caressed up and down Felix's chest.
When they pulled apart, they were both panting and Felix was already half-hard in his pants.
He swallowed. “What happened next?”
Ace smirked. “We inhaled our pancakes and went straight for the nearest hotel.”
Felix glanced at Ace's half-eaten sandwich. “Would now be a good time to shower—”
“Yes!” Ace shouted, then cleared his throat and adjusted his pants. “I mean, yeah, now would work perfectly. Let me just—”
Ace reached for his sandwich and shoved it into his mouth before pulling Felix to his feet and into the bathroom.

Cap-Ironman RecWeek: What-If Wednesday
Time for another installment of @cap-ironman rec week! Today’s theme: AU’s.
I know AU’s in different settings are half the reason most people read fanfics, but they’re not really my thing on the whole. AU’s where different choices are made, or different events transpire? Absolutely. Coffee shops? Not my cup of... you know.
So, here’s my AU recommendations for mostly “turn left” scenarios. This time with an under-the-cut break so I don’t take over everyone’s timelines (sorry about that last post). Also with some summaries truncated for length.
Alone Like This
Author: GotTheSilver
Word Count: 7,452
Summary: Steve, post waking up, runs away from SHIELD, and Tony's the one who tracks him down.
Why You Should Read It:
First off, GotTheSilver’s been consistently and regularly putting out solid Stony since 2012 and not only are they not stopping, they’re only getting better. This writer doesn’t get nearly the fanfare I’d expect in Stony circles for someone who puts out this much good stuff, and here’s hoping this post can be a part of changing that.
While I am always a sucker for enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, there’s something to be said for stories where Steve and Tony hit it off right away. And watching these two very different people look at each other and see the same sense of being lost, then finding each other again is... excuse me, there’s something in my eye, ignore me.
Second Chance Lives
Author: raeldaza
Word Count: 43,872
Summary: Tony's gonna die of palladium poisoning anyway, why not join a pointless expedition to recover Captain America’s body? And after, well, why not dedicate his last few months to making sure an American hero settles into his new life? What else is he going to do, get drunk at parties?
Why You Should Read It:
This writer doesn’t write a lot for the MCU but when they do, dang.
“Tony is the one helping Steve acclimate to the new century before Avengers 2012″ is a whole genre of Stony fanfics that scratch an itch I didn’t even know I had before I started reading fanfiction, and this is one of the best ones out there. It’s got it all - Steve poorly coping with his PTSD, Tony poorly coping with his immanent mortality, some breathtakingly poor communication between the two most emotionally stunted men in the MCU, and a cat named Roomba. What’s not to love?
Should You Choose to Accept It
Author: elwenyere (look, you’re gonna be seeing a lot of them this week, sorry-not-sorry)
Word Count: 27,106
Summary: After a terrorist attack and a field operation gone wrong, the Avengers realize that Nick Fury's secrets are just the start of a much bigger mystery. Steve and Tony try to keep some things from each other as well, but that can't possibly affect the mission — right? Mission Fic + Getting Together (or Mission: Getting Together) that mashes up elements from Iron Man 3, CA: Winter Soldier, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season one, and Mission Impossible 3.
Why You Should Read It:
You can see my post yesterday for singing El’s praises, but what I really liked about this fic was how how damn creative it is. The CAWS/IM3/AOS mashup is everything I wished the actual MCU gave us and more, with well-developed characters and an exciting story to put them in. And because it’s El, you know the banter’s gonna be on point, the way the characters care for each other is gonna be emotionally constipated but touching, and the pacing’s gonna be exciting enough to draw you in and keep you there. Also, this fic doesn’t have nearly enough kudos so please go read it and fix that or I’m gonna have to try to hack AO3 and that’ll just be embarrassing for all parties involved.
What Happens In Vegas
Author: sabremc
Word Count: 161,951
Summary: “What the hell, Tony?” Rhodey demanded brusquely.  Tony winced and drew the phone away from his ear.  “You’ve got cops and Feds all over the hotel.  I’m watching you perp walk out of the police station on repeat on CNN.  They’re saying you tried to bribe Stern?  Fox News has you selling weapons on the black market, and God that picture they’re using is the one from Bali in ’09.   You look like shit.  They wheeled Stern out and put him in an ambulance, by the way.  Got some paparazzi swearing you decked the guy.  Now they’ve got ‘copters following it like he’s OJ.”
“Yeah, don’t worry, Sourpatch, I’ve got it covered.   Uh, though, I should probably tell you that, purely in the interests of national security and the greater good, I kind of had to fake marry that stripper-gram  you sent.  Thanks for that, by the way,” Tony added quickly.
Why You Should Read It:
If you’re deep enough into Stony to see posts like this on Tumblr, you probably know sabre’s what we in the business call a “big name author.” They’re prolific, they’re popular, and most importantly, they write words good (technical term). Seriously, sabre just keeps cranking out high quality stuff over and over again, raising the bar for the rest of us like a jerk (not really. I’m not bitter they write stuff so good I wish I’d thought of it first. Not at all.)
I never read stripper!Steve or stripper!Tony as a rule, but this came so widely recommended that I broke that rule and boy am I glad that I did. This is also the only fic on this list that’s a true-AU, with Steve being a non-powered vet from Afghanistan who left his army career to help Bucky and is stripping in Vegas to raise money for a prosthetic arm. He’s booked to do a private show for Tony, shenanigans ensue, and now they’re fake-married. This fic’s got some top-of-the-line banter and character development, but I particularly love it for its rich setting. Sabre paints a Vegas not just with strip clubs and blackjack tables, but KISS-themed minigolf, romantic dinners on the Eiffel tower, gaudy hotel lobbies, and making out on giant ferris wheels. It’s such a richly developed playground for the characters to play on, and through it, Steve manages to find a life for himself he’d given up on, and Tony finds multiple ways to show his kindness and depth of feeling for Steve. I know the word count’s long for this one but trust me, you’ve gotta read this fic.
Wait & Sea
Author: Lenalena
Word Count: 53,244
Summary: In which Tony and Steve get sent on an undercover mission aboard a cruise ship to make contact with Hydra. In this AU the military has kept the discovery and defrosting of Captain America a secret, so Steve and Tony have never met before. Yet they are to pose as newlyweds....
Why You Should Read It:
This one’s old and popular enough to be considered one of the “classic” Stony fics, and for good reason. Lenalena doesn’t write too often and not as much as they used to, but the fics they have up there are an absolute delight.
This is another fic that I skipped a bunch of times for being outside my comfort zone, but when I finally read it I saw why everyone’s so wild about it. In this story, Steve’s defrosted a bit earlier and not revealed as Captain America. He and Tony are sent undercover to sniff out Hydra shenanigans on a cruise and, because it’s fanfiction, they’ve got to pretend to be a married couple while onboard. There’s tons to love about this fic, but the things that bring me back to reading it over and over is first, Tony’s kindness and the way he’s attuned to Steve’s feelings, which... God, just inject “kind, observant Tony” straight into my veins, please and thank you. This is also another really rich setting for a story, and Lena knows how to fold the the hokeyness of the cruise into the seriousness of the mission and the depth of feelings Steve and Tony are finding for each other in a really beautiful, layered way. It’s funny, it’s heartfelt, it’s steamy, it’s gripping... why are you still reading this here? Go check it out for yourself!
Ashes to Ashes

Summary: After regrouping following some surprise time travel, the world's heroes and sorcerers come up with a plan to protect the Mind and Time Stones by taking them into space in opposite directions. The result involves a lot more time loops than Steve would like, but at least they're getting a second chance to stop Thanos. (As well as a third, and a fourth...) And if Steve takes the opportunity to try to reconcile with Tony, too—well, they have the time, and Steve's going to make the most of it.
Why You Should Read It:
Dirigibleplumbing’s another name in Stony fanfics that does not get nearly as much fanfare as they deserve. They’re consistently a really creative voice in Stony fanfics and I always look forward to their stories showing me something new. Go read all their fics, I need more people to geek out with me over them.
I tend to limit myself on Steve-and-Tony-mend-things-after-Civil-War fics not because they’re not good, but because they’re so heavy, and also the Sokovia Accords have five hundred layers of crap in them that no good fic could possibly hash out well. This one, though? When you add in the Infinity War/End Game fixit? Poetry. Art. Music to my ears. DP wrote a really engaging, twisty story where it’s hard to predict what’s coming next, in spite of it literally being a pseudo-Groundhog day scenario. The characterizations are great, the story is engaging, and the feelings are big and sad and eventually happy. Go read it, you’ll love it.
I have tons of other recs for this category but this seems like a good place to stop for today. Tomorrow’s Alternative Media Thursday, and I’ve got some real gems I’ve been saving for that day (aaaaand possibly a self-rec or two ;)

One month.
One lousy fucking month it had been since you and Alex stopped talking. He wanted to say that he had been doing good, say that he had forgotten about you and could look you in the eyes and tell you to shove off for how you reacted. But even then, even after everything, he knew deep down he still wouldn’t be able to.
Alex had kept himself busy though throughout February and the beginning few days of March. He picked up more hours at work and hung out with Denis and his new girlfriend, Lara, more. Alex never would admit it to Denis, cause he would hate to see how upset Denis would get, but he hated being the third wheel. Why was it that Denis could get a girl and Alex couldn’t even find someone attractive? Well, other than you that is.
He also gravitated towards drinking more. Alex found himself drinking at least two beers when he got home and another before going to bed. It was bad to say, he knew that, but it helped dull the pain he had in his chest. Dare he say, a heart break? No - that was just silly to say, how could he be heartbroken over someone that he hardly knew?
But whether Alex would admit it or not, he was heartbroken. He found himself becoming desperate, wandering into the English department one day and towards your office. He wasn’t going to bother you, he just wanted to see how you were doing. You were with a student at the time, a guy probably a year or two younger than himself. You were smiling and laughing at whatever the student was telling you and it sent a boil into Alex’s chest.
It wasn’t until he saw you grab the student’s hand that he was sent into a rage. Turning around on his heels, Alex headed back down the hall with a huff, his footsteps heavy as he stomped away to leave, making it to the entranceway for that side of the office before coming to a stop at the sound of his voice.
Turning around, he glared at the sight of Professor Thorne coming out of his office, looking down at Alex with a frown, “Hey, Alex. You okay?” Rolling his eyes, Alex knew that the last person he wanted to speak with then was Professor Thorne, although if he were to just turn and walk away, that would just start an entirely new ordeal that Alex didn’t have room to deal with at the moment.
“Yeah, peachy.” Alex said through gritted teeth. Before he could ask what he wanted though, Professor Thorne beat Alex to it.
“Okay…” He began, not entirely believing him, but also not caring enough to press on. “Listen, you’re the only one who hasn’t met with me yet to discuss your senior project. Do you have time tomorrow to meet with me? I gotta know where you’re at and see if there is anything I can help you with.”
There was a reason Alex hadn’t met with him yet - it was because he was still getting over whatever it was he told you back in January. Alex still wanted to beat him up, but he knew that he couldn’t - since he was his professor and everything.
But Alex knew that this was part of his grade, meeting with him to discuss his progress. He found it so painful to even answer, but finally he did.
“Yeah, sure, whatever. I can come into your office hours tomorrow.”
Taking a step forward, Professor Thorne clapped Alex’s shoulder, “Great! I’ll see you tomorrow then?”
Before Thorne could get another word out, Alex was already turning and going out of the department to leave for the day.
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
“Okay class, thanks for the great discussion today! As you’re looking over your critiques from me on your past project, feel free to contact me if you have any questions, alright? If I don’t hear from you I’ll assume you’re satisfied with your grade.”
The class began to pack up, shuffling down the steps of the auditorium and out the exit doors to head to their next classes or wherever it was they went afterwards. You became distracted by your own critique grade, the bold letters in red stating ‘SEE ME AFTER CLASS’ hitting you in the face like a brick. You thought you had done so well on that past project, but it seemed as though the professor thought otherwise.
When you approached his desk, he was finishing his conversation with another student, who proudly talked about how he would be sending his film in for a contest sometime this week.
“That’s great to hear, Jaxon! You’ll have to let me know how it goes.” Jaxon nodded his head, turning towards you and smiled shyly, waving awkwardly before excusing himself from the class. When the door clicked shut, you cleared your throat to get the professor’s attention.
“Excuse me, Professor Kerner? You asked to see me about my project?” It was more so of a clarification than a question, although your timidness would make others think otherwise. You stood in front of his desk, watching as he looked up from his laptop with a smile.
“Yes, of course. Do you have time to discuss this in my office? I believe there is another class in here shortly after us and I’d hate to be interrupted.” Before you could answer him, though, he was already on his feet, packing the desk up.
“S-Sure! Yeah, I have time. I don’t have anything else going on today.” Your mouth twitched into a smile, cheeks growing red as you watched him round the desk, standing beside you with his hand on your back.
“Shall we?”
It didn’t take long to get to his office, going to the third floor where the English department resided. You kept on his heels, not wanting to get lost as classes dismissed and professors frantically went from the hall and into their offices or vice versa. You nearly ran into one of the professors on your way to Professor Kerner’s office.
But when you finally stepped through the door and into his office, you let out a sigh of relief, closing your eyes to catch your breath before the sound of the door shutting caught your attention.
Turning, you watched as Professor Kerner set his things down on his desk, motioning towards the round table in the middle, “Please, have a seat. I just need to get my laptop out.”
You sat down at the table, your backpack resting beside you while the graded critique laid in front of you. You weren’t sure what to do with your hands suddenly and found yourself toying with the corner of the paper. It didn’t take him long before he sat across from you, slipping his jean jacket off and throwing it behind him and into the open chair at his desk.
“Professor, I’m sorry if my project didn’t meet the require-”
“Alex.” He said suddenly cutting you off from your apology.
Furrowing your eyebrows, you looked up from the empty spot at the table and up at him, “Pardon?”
He laughed, shaking his head before opening his laptop to pull open your project. “Alex. My name. Call me that when we’re in here. I do have a name, not just Professor.” He teased you, glancing up at you to see your reaction.
He was so smooth with his words, maybe that’s why his screenwriting unit was so good - it’s cause he knew how words were supposed to flow. You nodded your head slow, blinking as you tried to recollect your thoughts.
“Okay, Alex...I’m sorry if my project didn’t meet the requirements in the rubric. I really thought I did a go-”
“What makes you think you didn’t?”
Your mouth snapped shut as he interrupted you again, this time your face growing red with annoyance rather than from the suaveness of his words. If he let you finish your sentence, maybe he’d know what you were trying to ask him.
But you didn’t get the chance to then, he turned his laptop towards you and began to play your project, continuing on while the video played in the background.
“You’re not a film student, are you?” He asked, leaning forward to rest his chin on his hands. You shook your head, “No, I’m an English Literature major.”
He nodded once before moving to hit the spacebar on his laptop, pausing the video before looking back at you. “I can tell...but that shouldn’t be taken badly - what I mean by that is your work shows it. You think out of the box with assignments compared to the traditional route.”
You shrugged your shoulders, blushing as you stared at him. “I just did what I felt was right.”
The answer seemed to satisfy him, although there was a flicker of something darker that hit his eyes. You leaned back in your chair and moved your hands towards you, picking at the loose threads in your jeans.
“Is there a reason you wanted to see me, Professor?” You watched as he stared at you for another moment before standing up, walking over to the door of his office, looking out the window before shutting the blinds and locking the door. He stuffed his hands into his pockets before turning back to look at you.
“I want you to show me how you got some of those shots. Please, get out your camera.”
As he sat back down in his chair, he moved it back to sit out from under the table, his legs spreading out wide as his hands rested on his thighs. You weren’t sure where this was leading, but you had a sinking suspicion that there was more to it than just showing him how you got some shots.
You stood up from your own seat, holding the camera in your hands as you slowly made your way to him, standing in front of him while looking down at him, your face red.
“So I...um, I don’t zoom in unless I have to. If your subject works with you, you shouldn’t have a problem getting a tight shot of their face without them getting distracted.” You explained, your grip on your camera tightening.
Alex nodded his head and smiled, motioning for you to step closer, “Well then, why don’t you show me? I’m more of a visual learner myself.” He explained, his hands running up and down his thighs.
For a brief second you didn’t move, your brain not sure with what to do. It’s not that you were uncomfortable, it just felt like a weird dream - a really weird sexual fantasy that you knew you shouldn’t be having.
“I, Professor, I'm sorry, but I have to go. I have something coming u-”
“It’s Alex, remember? And you told me that you didn’t have anything after class...were you lying to me?” He questioned, sitting up straighter as he stared you down. The look he was giving you wasn’t sinister necessarily, but it sent a shiver down your spine.
“No, Professor, I just forgot-”
But before you could get the sentence out, you felt his hand on your wrist, pulling you to him until you were settled on his lap, only inches from his face. You tried to get comfortable, but it was hard when you felt his obvious erection under your leg.
“Come now, don’t get shy on me now. Why don’t you turn that camera on and show me what I asked you to?” His hand was now on your waist, holding you down on his lap so you wouldn’t run off. You found yourself giving in, nodding your head as you turned your camera on and brought it up to your face, watching through the screen.
It was hard to stay focused, your hands shaking which made the quality of the shot blurry, almost impossible to identify what you were looking at. You knew that Alex could tell that you were struggling and took the camera from you gently, holding it away from you as he pushed his fingers under your shirt, running his fingertips up your side.
“Oh that’s just not going to work now, is it? You’re far too shaky,” He paused a moment, tilting his head before his crooked grin spread, “Why don’t you get on your pretty little knees for me and guide me through with what you mean, yeah?”
Whether you wanted to protest or not, he was already coaxing you down on your knees in front of him, sitting up as he pointed the camera on you, the lens right in your face. “Good, now be a good girl and help me out, yeah?”
But before anything happened, Alex was woken up by the sounds of sirens coming from outside his window. Jolting awake, Alex found himself panting from the sudden alarm that was going off outside along with the intense dream he was having. He sat up, sitting forward to look out his window and saw two cop cars sitting outside the club. Rolling his eyes, Alex fell back into his bed, not caring to watch and see what drunken fool was getting tossed out.
As he laid on his back, rubbing his face to wake himself up, he felt a sudden breeze hit his thighs. Looking down, he scoffed at the outrageous tent in his boxers, his dick standing straight up. He reached his hand up and onto the top of his dick, feeling that his precum had already soaked through.
He hooked his fingers at the waistband of his boxers and pulled them down, shimming out of them before kicking them onto the floor, his dick now proudly standing up. He wrapped his right hand around the base of him, squeezing himself once before beginning to pump, avoiding his swollen head that was still leaking.
A groan escaped his lips as his head fell back, his left hand reaching down to squeeze his balls that were growing tight. God, why did he have to have such a good dream just to be cut off before the good stuff even happened? When he closed his eyes, picturing you on top of him, your breasts bouncing in his face, his mouth fell open with a moan escaping - so faint that it almost sounded like a whine. His pace quickened as he began to stroke himself harder, his hips rocking in his hands as his toes began to curl.
It didn’t take him long to finish, already painfully close when he woke up. He flinched when he felt his own seed hit him in the face, cringing at the warm feeling that now began to roll down down his lips and chin, spilling onto his chest.
“Fuck…” He breathed, catching his breath as he laid in his bed, regaining his focus before deciding that he needed to go take a shower before it dried out on him. Swinging his legs over the side of his bed, he held his hand at his stomach so nothing fell and hit the carpet - a mess he did not want to clean up.
⋆ ⋆ ⋆
Alex was dragging that morning, moving painfully slow to get around and meet with Professor Thorne that morning. It was his day off from work and the last thing he wanted to do was go and meet with him about his senior project. Alex hadn’t even begun to think of his project for class and time was running out. He had just about two months left before it was due - he knew he had time, but deep down Alex knew that he was panicking just a little.
He didn’t bother to wear anything nice - throwing on an old shirt from high school and a pair of faded jeans. It was cold that morning, so he decided it would be best to wear his jean jacket on his ride to campus. Alex could only hope that it would be sufficed.
It didn’t take him long to get onto campus, traffic not as busy as he imagined it would be that morning. He parked in his usual spot, taking his helmet off and sticking it inside the storage compartment under the seat of his scooter. He pulled out his bag, locked up the storage, and headed into the building and to Professor Thorne’s office.
By the time he arrived he noticed that Professor Thorne was just walking in. He looked tired, like he was hungover. Alex couldn’t help the smirk that came to face. He knew it was wrong, but seeing Professor Dick having a rough time only made Alex’s day better. As Alex approached his office, he glanced to his left and noticed your office light on, the door opened. His heart sank, wishing that he could be over there instead of here.
“I wouldn’t bother, she’s been in a piss mood all semester.”
Turning, Alex frowned as Professor Thorne sat at the table, pulling out a notebook while a cup of coffee rested in his hands. He took a long sip, sighing before his eyes looked up at Alex, motioning for him to come in. “Please, come in.”
He didn’t have to be told twice. Walking in, Alex tossed his bag on the ground before settling in the chair across from Thorne, looking down at the notebook to see if he could read what was written. Alex failed to make out anything, noticing how sloppy the handwriting was, before looking up ahead of him at Thorne.
“So, you have about two months left before the end of your semester and your senior project is due. Have you started it yet? You can be honest.” Alex watched as Thorne began to scribble some notes down next to Alex’s name, he assumed that he would be taking notes on what his project plans were.
“I haven’t, no,” Alex cleared his throat and sat up a bit in his seat, “I’ve been busy with work and it’s just kind of slipped my mind. I planned on starting it this weekend though since I have it off from work.” He wouldn’t have been surprised if Thorne was angry with his answer, but to his surprise he wasn’t and just nodded his head, writing down what he said.
“And have you given it any thought as to how you are going to approach the project theme?”
He hadn’t. The theme wasn’t challenging, but it wasn’t something that Alex had ever worked on before. He enjoyed filming rather basic ideas - news reporters, nature...things like that. Filming something that answers the question of ‘how would your life change if you had the number one thing you wanted’ was so out there for Alex that he couldn’t even wrap his brain around what it was that he wanted.
Shrugging his shoulders, Alex crossed his arms over his chest, “Maybe something to do with school? I don’t know, graduating and getting a job.” It was this answer that Thorne stopped in his tracks for. Looking up, he frowned at Alex, his head tilted to the side.
“That’s what you’re going to do? Alex...come on now,” He set his pencil down and copied Alex’s posture, leaning back with his arms crossed over his chest. “I think it’s quite obvious that we don’t like each other all that much, but I would be lying if I said you weren’t one of my favorite students. You’re better than picking a path so simple that a freshman could do it. I want you to think outside of the box. It’s your senior project, I expect senior quality.”
It came to a surprise for Alex to hear that he was one of Thorne’s favorite students. Alex knew that the two weren’t fond of one another, but even so Thorne still enjoyed Alex and his work. Alex, never caring for what Thorne thought of him, felt a weird pain in his chest - was Alex for the first time actually feeling bad for letting him down in some way? No, no not a chance in Hell. Not until pigs flew across the sky.
“I’ll make it senior quality, Professor. That you don’t have to worry about.” Alex replied back flatly. At his response, Thorne nodded and scribbled something down on the notebook before closing it.
“Good, because these are going to be shown at the department celebration at the end of the semester and I expect that you will have the best one there.” Alex nodded his head in understandment, letting out a sigh before looking up at Thorne.
“Was that all that you wanted to discuss?”
Nodding, Thorne watched as Alex stood up, grabbing his bag and turning to leave before stopping in the doorway at the sound of Thorne’s voice.
“If you happen to run into her, would you let her know that I miss her?” He asked suddenly. Alex was glad that his back was facing Thorne, so that he didn’t see him roll his eyes in disgust.
“Yeah, sure.” He answered, although he had no intentions of doing so. Thorne nodded, smiling sadly before he rolled the chair over to his desk, “Thanks, Alex. If you don’t mind, can you shut the door on your way out?”
And he did. As he walked out of his office, he shut the door behind him and took a step to go down the hall before freezing in his tracks. At the end of the hall, only a few feet in front of him, was you - standing with a cup of coffee in your hand and a half-eaten muffin in the other.
It was the first time since January that the two of you had crossed paths. To say that it was uncomfortable was an understatement.
“Good morning, Professor.” Alex greeted casually, trying to not make the interaction anymore awkward than it had to be.
“Alex, hello. How has your semester been?” You felt your throat tighten at the question - you knew how it was going for him, you didn’t even have to ask, because your semester had been going the same.
He shrugged his shoulders, adjusting the strap of his bag on his shoulder. “As good as it can be, I suppose,” At first he didn’t want to say anything more, his own anger building up inside of him. But he could see it on your face, the guilt that was eating you away. Did you feel bad for shooing him off? The next words came out so fast, that Alex didn’t even have time to stop himself.
“You look really good. I suppose you’ve been having a good year?” He asked, his mouth twitching at the sound of your laugh. Alex didn’t know how much he had missed that sound until hearing it just then.
“I’m glad to hear that someone thinks so. After my birthday it seems like I really started showing my age,” He titled his head to the side in confusion before you rolled your eyes, laughing it off. “I turned thirty-three last weekend. Trust me when I say, once you hit thirty, it all goes down.”
Alex smiled, watching as you tried so obviously to not think too much on the fact that you just had another birthday. “Well if it means anything, I don’t think you look a day over twenty-six,” His own cheeks went pink at the sight of you blushing, your eyes dropping down to the ground, mumbling a thanks. “Did you do anything fun for your birthday?”
Shaking your head, you looked up with a sigh, “Besides the bottle of wine? No, no I just graded papers, drank a little too much, and went to bed. You know, the boring adult life.”
It made Alex frown a little, knowing that your birthday had passed and you didn’t do anything fun. Would it be inappropriate to ask if you wanted to catch up over coffee? As a late birthday celebration? Probably, but he didn’t care. Right now, he was just in the moment and didn’t want to think about all the wrongs of what was going on between them, or at least what he wanted to have happen between them.
He opened his mouth to ask what you were doing, but the words seemed to get lost going out, nothing coming out before he finally clamped his mouth shut, deciding against it. “Well, maybe you and your friends will be able to do something fun this weekend? A late celebration is better than none at all…” Alex paused and watched as you nodded, taking a bite of your muffin. “Well, I should get going. It was- it was nice to see you. I hope the rest of your semester goes well.”
You smiled weakly and nodded, “You too,” You replied, mouth muffled by the muffin. Your attention turned as he walked around you, heading to leave before you found yourself speaking, “Alex?” You asked suddenly, gaining his attention to stop and turn around at you, a confused expression on his face.
“Are you free tonight? Would you want to go get a drink and maybe catch up?” You felt your cheeks grow red and cleared your throat, trying to be casual about it, “I, I realize that I was a bit brash on you earlier this semester, and I’m sorry, but I’d like to think that since you aren’t my student, that it would be fine.”
You weren’t sure if he’d agree, as his expression fell blank. He was probably thinking - but was he thinking of how to turn you down or what to snap at you? Either way, you would have deserved it. He didn’t deserve to get the short end of the stick that you gave him, he was just being a kind person - you were the one over thinking things. As far as you knew, he wasn’t the type of student to go after a teacher in that way.
But he surprised you, and when he agreed - all you could do was smile. “O-Oh! Great! Lovely, would you like to meet outside the Blue Fox around eight? It’s the club down the road from me...I sort of got banned from the Sour Apple so I’m a regular there now.” You admitted, watching as Alex’s eyes went wide, a laugh escaping from you.
“Banned? What did you do?” He asked and you shook your head. Alex grinned at you and shook his head back, “Oh no, you can’t just drop that bombshell on me and then expect me to not ask what happened. Come on, you can tell me.”
And you did, over a basket of mozzarella sticks that night at the Blue Fox. The entire time Alex couldn’t contain himself at your ridiculous story that led to you not being able on the premise. How it led to you grading papers on your thirty-third birthday.
“Wait, wait, so you jumped him?” Alex questioned, laughing as he looked at you, grinning as you shook your head, setting the bottle of beer you were nursing back on the bar.
“Not entirely...I was drunk and dancing on the bar and he kept pestering me to get down. Well something happened behind him and when he turned, I took the chance and jumped on his back,” You couldn’t hold back your own laughs now, shaking your head as Alex grabbed your arm, his head falling back to laugh. “So technically I jumped on him...but I didn’t jump him.”
Rolling his eyes, Alex pulled his hand away from you to grab another stick from the basket, pouring an obscene amount of marinara sauce on before stuffing it into his mouth, nearly choking on the cheese as he swallowed too quickly. “Either way, you got banned from the Sour Apple because you were drunk and dancing on the bar...man, wish I was there to see that. Seems like a great way to end the big thirty-two-”
Before you let him get the last word out, you sent a punch to his arm, grinning as he fake groaned, nudging you back before he licked his fingers, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. You weren’t sure if it was the marinara he just barely missed off his face, or the fact that he had been the first person to show you an ounce of kindness in the past month - but either way, you found yourself looking at him as something more than just a student, but Alex. Was this feeling right? No, but for once your brain didn’t try and analyze the situation and let your heart take the lead.
“Listen...again, I’m really sorry for before. I don’t know what came over me to snap at you like I did. All you were doing was showing me kindness and I freaked out. The truth is, between Professor Thorne and I - he’s been trying to get me to go out with him for a while now, and that night I snapped at him because he was accusing me of sleeping around with you,” You laughed at how ridiculous it was to say out loud, “When you took care of me that night I was so embarrassed at how bad I got that night. Usually I’m not the one who needs to be taken care of, and when I found out it was a student of mine that I had known for not even a full two days, well, you can see where I came from.”
You jumped slightly when you felt Alex touch your shoulder, smiling at you before carefully moving his hand to your face, tucking some hair behind your ear to uncover your face. “I get it...now at least. I didn’t back then, and I spent the last month so angry, but now that you’ve told me, it feels like a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” He took his other hand and gently turned your face to look at him, staring into each other’s eyes, “You deserve someone better Professor Thorne. That’s why I pressed on so much about him...because I didn’t want you to give in. You deserve someone better, someone like, like-”
“Like you?”
It came out so smoothly it almost felt right. You could tell Alex was taken back by what you had told me because his body retracted back slightly, although his hands still rested on your face. A sad smile spread across his face as he caressed your face for a moment before pulling away.
“No, someone even better.”
Turning back towards the bar, Alex picked his beer up and took a good few sips before settling it back down. You didn’t mean to upset him more, and you wondered if your comment about seeing someone like him made him uncomfortable. He wasn’t though, but you didn’t know, what was going through his head was how head over heels he was for you, and how he finally figured out what he wanted his senior project to be.
How would Alex’s life change if he had the number one thing he wanted? Well for starters, what was it that he wanted so badly? It was you. You. Perhaps it was love at first sight, or whatever cheesy trope this was between the both of you, but he realized that what he wanted was you. And it wasn’t just you in the sense of having drinks and going back to fuck, no, what he wanted was to share the rest of his life with you. Be there for you to rub your feet after work, cook meals together, and tell you every day just how beautiful you were.
So how would his life change? That he wasn’t quite sure on. All he knew was that he wanted you and he’d be damned if he went his entire life without you.
The music shifted from a mainstream flop that repeated every hour in the club and to a slower, more heavier bass song. Watching as those on the floor began to slow their movements, pulling close to their partners, you smiled and glanced at Alex, who was watching too.
“Alex? Would you like to dance?” You were elated when he grinned, nodding his head eagerly before standing up, extending his hand out to help you up before pulling you to the dancefloor. He suddenly wasn’t sure where to put his hands, not wanting to overstep his boundaries. However, you figured that it would just be best to take control of the situation - pulling his hands behind you, you positioned them on your lower back, running your hands up his arms to wrap around his neck.
The blue lights illuminated across his face, alternating with the white light that swayed the other way in the room. It could be a real eyesore at times, but right now, you didn’t even pay attention, all your attention went ahead of you to Alex. Even under the club’s spotlights, you could still tell his sweet face was blushing.
As the two of you rocked hips together, swaying to the beat of the song, you couldn’t help but stare up at him, your fingers moving now across his jawline and to his lips, taking in how soft his skin was. There wasn’t a single wrinkle on his face, hardly any blemishes either - he was perfect.
You suddenly felt conscious with being so close to him and went to move back but was caught to stay in place, feeling Alex’s grip on your waist to hold you in place. “Don’t...you’re beautiful.” He said lowly, moving his hand to cup the side of your face.
Nobody leaned in first - it was so insync that it was like you both mentally had said something to one another. When your lips met, it was almost perfect how well your lips meshed. It would’ve been completely perfect if Alex’s eagerness didn’t get the best of him and knocked his teeth against your’s - even then though, you didn’t care.
You only pulled away when you needed to catch your breath, and when you realized just how many people were watching, hooting and hollering you guys on, you could only laugh and shake your head, covering your face for a moment before looking back up at him. Standing on your toes, you grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him until your lips met his ear - at this point all teacher codes of ethics out the window.
“You wanna get out of here? My car is out back.” You pulled away to see his expression, hoping that he was on the same page as you. When his smile turned into a bigger grin, nodding his head eagerly, you pulled him behind you, him keeping up like a lost puppy.
When you got to your car you fumbled in your jacket to find the keys, biting down on your bottom lip to stop yourself from moaning out as Alex stood behind you, pressing himself up against you as he kissed down your neck. At the sound of the doors unlocking, you turned and grabbed him by the front of his shirt again, spinning him around and pushing him back in the backseat of your car, crawling in after him and locking the car up.
It only took a matter of seconds before he was on you again, holding you down onto his lap as he kissed your lips feverishly, almost desperately. You didn’t mind though, you knew it was so sudden and in the moment that you wouldn’t be taking your time with this. Your hands rested on his neck, keeping his head tilted up as you nipped at his bottom lip, kissing down his face and along his jawline.
“I haven’t had car sex in forever,” You breathed, leaning back to unbutton your shirt. You tried to ignore how hard Alex was staring at you, his chest rising and falling. You wondered if he had ever done something like this before, “You ever have car sex?” You asked, slipping off your blouse and setting it beside you, sitting in his lap now with just your bra on.
He wished that you had nothing on, but given the location, he could get by with having you just have your blouse off. He leaned forward and couldn’t help himself, kissing the tops of your breasts that spilled out of your bra. Sucking dark bruises across your chest before he finally shook his head.
“No,” He explained, his hands moving behind your bra to try and unhook it. He was struggling and his face rested in between your breasts, groaning in frustration. Should he tell you the truth? That it wasn’t just a car he hadn’t had sex in...but sex at all. “I’m kind of...kind of a virgin.” He mumbled against your skin.
You didn’t mean to push him back the way you did, but it came off so sudden that it threw you off. Looking down at him, you held an expression of bewilderment, “You’re...you’re a virgin?”
Now he looked just embarrassed, a frown on his face as he looked down, nodding his head. Did you not want to do it with him anymore? Now that you knew he was a virgin? Of course that wasn’t the case, but you weren’t going to let him lose his virginity in the back of your car. He deserved better than that. You grabbed his cheeks and pushed his head up, smiling at how cute he looked with squished cheeks. Leaning forward, you kissed him once before pulling away.
“I don’t care, okay? But I’m not gonna take away your virginity in the back of a car in some club parking lot,” You looked around the backseat before grabbing a sweatshirt from the very back, slipping it on over you to get out without exposing anymore - not wanting to bother with the buttons of your blouse, “Come on, I’ll drive us back to my place. It’s only about a mile away.”
Climbing off his lap and into the front seat, you grabbed your keys and started up your car, laughing as Alex struggled to climb into the front, nearly kicking you in the process. When he finally was in the passenger seat, settled in and buckled up, you smiled at him and nodded, driving out of the lot and down the road towards your place.
It took maybe five minutes to get back, not even. When you did you parked out front and got out, grinning as Alex rushed out, following you close behind. You weren’t one to usually bring home guests, so this was all new for you. Your brain began to speed think at everything that could possibly be embarrassing that was lying out. You had the couple stuffed animals in your bed, but maybe he wouldn’t pay too much attention to them. Hopefully he didn’t look too long at the awkward younger photos of you with your family.
When you got up to your apartment, unlocking it and pushing the door open, you stepped off to the side to let him in, smiling shyly as he looked around, a smile on his face.
“Uh, if you could take your shoes off here that’d be great..thanks.” You cringed at how much of a mother you sounded like. The dirt wasn’t going to ruin your carpet and if anything, you probably just made him more embarrassed.
But he didn’t seem to take it too much to heart, mumbling out a quick ‘sorry’ before stepping on the back of his shoes to pull his feet out, setting them by the other shoes you had near the door. Before you forgot, you leaned over and locked the door, looking up at him with a smile on your face. You never realized how much taller he was than you until that very moment.
“So, umm, this really your first time?” You asked, smiling when he laughed. “Yeah, just...never found someone I guess.”
His confession made your heart skip a beat, and the anxiety began to settle. You knew you weren’t bad, but you were a bit out of practice. You wanted it to be good for him and you could only hope that you satisfied him enough. As you nodded your head, you took his hand in your own before beginning to pull him out of the living room and down the hall, into your bedroom.
When you got in your room, you took a step towards him, smiling as you leaned forward, pressing your lips gently to his. He took your face in his hands, holding you tenderly as he kissed you back. As the two of you kissed, you reached down and began to tug his belt off, finding the button of his jeans and undoing them, zipping his pants down and pushing them off.
Alex hissed at the cold air that hit his legs, pulling away from you before he accidentally bit you. You smiled and dropped to your knees, your face only inches away from his dick that still stood up under his boxers. “Alex? Has anyone ever sucked you off?”
He went red almost instantly, his face red as he shook his head, watching as you grabbed him through his boxers, slowly pumping him before taking the sides of his boxers and pulling them down, letting his dick spring up in your face. You sat back, staring ahead as you took him in before hearing him moan from above. You were glad to see that he was enjoying all of this.
“Why don’t you go sit on my bed, I don’t need you falling over, okay? Take your shirt off too.” You didn’t mean to come off so demanding, but you wanted him to get comfortable. You watched as he smiled, nodding before pulling off his shirt and tossing it on the ground beside his boxers and jeans, peeling his socks off too before he sat on the edge of your bed.
On your hands and knees you crawled over to him, settling down between him, grabbing his knees and spreading his legs open. You took him in your hand again and leaned forward to finally take him in your mouth before he stopped you suddenly. Looking up, you watched as he shook his head. Oh great, you were moving too quickly, now you freaked him out.
But that wasn’t it at all. He smiled and pulled at your sweatshirt, motioning at how you were still in all your clothes. Looking down, you scoffed and shook your head before standing up, pulling off your sweatshirt again and unclipped your bra, moving down to your jeans to pull the bottom half of your clothes off. You couldn’t help the grin that spread across your face as he grinned up at you, so lusted over the moment.
When you were back on your knees, you pulled your hair into one hand, holding it back as you prepared yourself for him. Just as your lips were about to touch his tip, you felt his hands in your hair, pulling it back for you so you could have your hands.
Alex was too fucking sweet on you, it made you sick. His gentle movements - holding your hair back, rubbing your back, you almost forgot that this was about him and not you. Looking up to meet his eyes, you kissed his inner thigh before moving your face up, taking his hard dick in your hand before grasping him at the base, your mouth covering him as you pushed your head down until you couldn’t take it any longer.
The moan that escaped Alex as he fell back into your bed was almost too obscene to be real - sounding like it came from one of those horribly made adult films. You grinned around him, sucking him as you began bobbing your head, feeling his hips shift under you, trying to relieve more pressure.
Pulling away with a ‘pop’, you looked up at him as you began to pump his cock, your other hand squeezing his thigh as he sat up, looking down at you. “Fuck...it feels so, so…” He groaned and thrusted into your hand, closing his eyes tight as his hands fell from your hair and down to the sheets, clenching at them as he tried his best not to already finish.
And you knew it was wrong, but your movements began agonizingly slow so suddenly, teasing him as he whined out loud, “So what, Alex? Do you want me to stop?” You smirked a little, watching his face contorted, the feeling becoming too overwhelming for Alex, tears in his eyes.
“No...mommy...I-”
But then your movements did stop. You didn’t mean to, but just like before, he said it so casually that it caught you off guard. He didn’t realize he had even said it until he caught himself saying it again, this time sitting up and opening his mouth, mortified with what he called you.
“I-, oh god, shit, fuck, I-I didn’t mean to call you th-”
Before he had a heart attack, you stood up and leaned forward, kissing him to shut him up. You crouched in front of him, pulling away with a smile. “Alex, shh, it’s fine. Okay?” You had never been called it before, granted you never fucked anyone so much younger than you, but you surprisingly didn’t hate it.
Furrowing his brows, Alex frowned and scooted back for you to rest on his lap, “Really?” You nodded and smiled, wrapping his arms around his neck before kissing him again, “Really, now will you be a good boy and let mommy fuck you?”
Alex swore he had died and gone to Heaven just then. His eyes, lulled down in lust, nodded as you pushed him to lay on his back, climbing onto him fully before beginning to rock yourself onto him, your wet slit running up and down his dick.
“I’m gonna ride you now, okay? It’s gonna be tight so just relax until I adjust before you try anything,” You coaxed, running your hands up and down his chest, watching as he nodded before you reached down and lined him up, sinking down onto him almost instantly.
You both moaned together, your head falling back at how well he filled you up. You didn’t realize how wet he had already made you until he slid into you so easily. You took a minute to adjust to his size before nodding, grabbing his wrists and pulling him to sit up, smiling at how close he was to you now.
“Just tell me what feels good, okay? It’s about you tonight, remember? Not me.” You began to slowly ride him, rising and sinking down onto him as you kissed him, holding his face close to you as his hands rested on your hips, guiding you up and down on him. The slapping noises became louder the wetter you got, and you truthfully didn’t realize you could get that wet.
You could tell he was getting close with how bad he was twitching in you, moaning into your neck now as he buried his face there, you holding his head close. “It’s okay Alex, I got you. You’re doing so good. You’re being a very good boy.” You coaxed, running your fingernails down the back of his neck and spine.
“Mmm, Mommy, I’m gonna cu-
“Where do you want to cum, baby? Tell me and Mommy will make it happen.” You promised, pushing him back to look down at him, continuing to ride him as your hair now stuck to your sweat covered forehead.
The tears that were in his eyes were now spilling down his cheeks, everything sending Alex overboard with how intense his emotions were. He swallowed the lump in his throat and let out a whine as you asked him again, trying to get him to answer before he finished too quickly.
“I-I wanna cum…” His eyes rolled in the back of his head, grunting as you snapped his hips up into you, panting as he felt your hand on his face, forcing him to look at you and answer you.
“Your tits! I wanna cum on them.” He answered, voice muffled as his cheeks squished together in your hands. You smiled in satisfaction at the answer, nodding before you pushed off him suddenly, whining yourself at the sudden loss of weight in you. You fell to your knees and guided him to stand up, feeling his dick slip between your tits as he fucked them, one hand holding your hair, the other at his side.
You held your own breasts in your hands, pressing them around Alex’s dick as he fucked them, glancing at his free hand as he stroked your face, moving his index finger towards your lips, pushing it between your lips to have you suck on his finger.
And you did, moaning around his finger while his pace quickened, becoming sloppy as he gripped your hair tighter, a little too tight, before suddenly letting go of your hair to grab his dick, pumping it in his hand until his hot spews of cum shot out, coaxing your tits until they were rolling down your chest and stomach.
He didn’t mean to fall, but his knees locked up and he stumbled back onto your bed, panting like he had never panted before, his eyes closed as he tried to regain his focus, ignoring the white specs that danced under his eyelids. You, on the other hand, sat back on the floor, feeling your own climax roll down your thighs, your eyes falling back in your head as you caught your breath.
“That was…” You began, although Alex beat you to the punch.
“Really fucking good.” You could hear how satisfied he was and you could only giggle, nodding in agreement before sitting up slightly, “Yeah, you could say that again.”
When the silence fell over the two of you, you decided to go and get a wet rag to clean you both off with, you yourself too tired to bother with a shower. You wiped yourself off first in the bathroom, rinsing the rag before going back into your room, crawling in the bed beside him to clean him up.
He watched as you cleaned him, a small smile on his face, “Sorry if I finished too quick...it was hard for me to hold it in any longer.” What made his smile grow, however, was the tender kiss you pressed against his temple as you took care of him, “Alex...don’t worry, okay? I enjoyed myself, promise. I’m glad for your first time, it was good.”
Alex sat up fully now, wrapping his arms around your waist as he pulled you to him, grinning at the sound of your giggle before kissing your cheek. “It was better than good. It was fan-fucking-tastic.” He leaned down and kissed your bare shoulder before resting his head against your chest, letting you hold him as the two laid in bed.
You wanted to say that it was just from the long day you had, but truthfully you knew that he tired you out. It had been too long since you had something as good as what you had with Alex that night, and your brain was still spinning. As you held him in your arms, stroking his face and running your fingers through his hair, you became tired and felt yourself drifting off.
On the other hand, Alex was still awake, thinking about what had just happened and how every crazy and fucked up dream he had led to this. He felt like a god at this point...okay, maybe that was a bit too far. When he felt your fingers come to a stop, he looked up and saw you sleeping, your breathing steady. He smiled and sat up carefully, not wanting to wake you as he pulled the blankets back and helped you under the covers.
When he placed the covers back over you, he stood up to find his clothes and go to the couch, not wanting to hover too long. Yeah, you guys had just hooked up, but he knew that probably to you that was all that was - a hookup - to him though, well-
“Alex?”
He turned from where he sat beside the bed, his jeans in his hands as he got ready to put them on. He stopped though, moving closer as he looked down at you, letting you take his hand into yours.
“Will you stay with me tonight? In here?”
The innocent plea for his company sent butterflies into his stomach. Nodding, he dropped his jeans back onto the ground before crawling under the covers beside you, freezing for a brief moment at how quickly you curled up to him, hugging him with your head pressed against his chest. Alex found himself smiling, wondering how he got so lucky. Kissing the top of your head, he rubbed your back until the two of you both fell asleep, tangled in each other’s arms.

drew looks at me, i fake a smile so he won’t see
your heart clenched at the sight of sunghoon. he was in the front of the classroom, with his best friend jake by his side. sunghoon had always been a little bit of a class clown, and jake was always right there with him. the teacher had told sunghoon to quiet down, but all sunghoon did was get louder. the teacher just laughed it off. sunghoon had always been her favorite.
she went on talking about some history topic, you zoning out in the middle of it. you couldn’t find any motivation to actually pay attention, so you let your thoughts wander. and they landed where they always seemed to go. sunghoon. you couldn’t seem to get the boy off your mind. he was always there.
you and sunghoon had always been very close. you basically grew up together, your parents being very close friends. naturally, feelings began to bloom. you caught yourself staring at him when he was focused on something, smiling a little wider when he cracked a joke. your thoughts were interrupted when the school bell rang. everyone jumped out of their seats, basically running out of the classroom. you were one of the last ones out, sunghoon waiting for you by the door as he always did. “hey y/n,” he said, a bright smile on his face.
“hey hoon,” you replied, returning the smile. you walked out of the classroom together, making small talk as you walked to your cars. as you got to yours, you leaned up against the door, smiling up at sunghoon as he spoke.
“hey uh, can i tell you something,” he asked, his aura suddenly seeming uneasy.
“yes, sunghoon, of course. you can tell me anything.” he smiled at your words, calming down immediately. he took a deep breath, before speaking, playing with his fingers hoping you would take the news well.
“okay well um… i met someone. a while ago. and she’s really great. her name is minhee, and i really really like her. no one else knows except for you, obviously. i wanted to tell you first because i trust you the most,” he said, his smile widening as he spoke. yours did the opposite. you felt your smile begin to drop, but you immediately fixed it.
i’ll bet she’s beautiful, that girl he talks about
your heart dropped to the floor at the announcement. you could feel the tears begin to form but you held them back. “oh um… that’s really great, sunghoon. i’m happy for you,” you said, forcing a smile. he didn’t seem to notice, as he smiled wide at your reaction.
“how did i know you’d say that? i’m glad. i cant wait for you to meet her, she’s absolutely amazing.” you could tell by the look on his face how he felt about her. his eyes were bright, and his smile was wide. it’s the way you wished he would talk about you. he kept going on about her, and you could hardly stand to be there any longer.
“hey, um, i got a lot of homework to catch up on… i really gotta go.” your voice was soft, your smile beginning to fade. yet, he still didn’t notice.
he smiled once again, your stomach churning. “of course. you get home. text me when you get home, yeah?” all you could muster up was a nod, quickly getting into your car. he walked off to his, you quickly driving home.
as soon as you got there, the tears began to fall. all that went through your head was the thought of sunghoon with another girl. the thought tore your heart to pieces, and you couldn’t control the tears.
the next day at school was when you met her. “hey y/n,” you heard sunghoon call. you plastered on a fake smile, and turned around to greet the boy. he jogged up to you, holding the hand of some girl. the second you saw her, you could see why sunghoon liked her. she was gorgeous. she had long dark hair, big eyes, and a bright smile. “y/n, this is minhee. minhee, this is y/n.”
you smiled at her, and said a small hi, making small talk. a few minutes later, jake walked up and pulled you away from the two. you two had almost gotten to class when jake stopped walking. “how are you holding up,” he asked, voice laced in concern. you shrugged, not exactly knowing what to say.
“i’m fine.” jake just sighed, clearly not believing you.
“if you need anything, i’m here for you, okay? i know it’s got to be hard on you. just… call me if you need anything, yeah?” you nodded, a small smile forming on your face.
“i will, jake. thank you.” he smiled back and walked into the classroom, taking his seat, you doing the same.
a few moments later, sunghoon walked in, minhee right by his side. what? since when was she in this class?
they sat down right next to each other, your heart dropping once more. you didn’t know how much more of this you could take.
he’s the reason for the teardrops on my guitar
that day after school, sunghoon and jake ran up to you, a big smile on sunghoon’s face. “hey y/n!”
you looked up at him and smiled, greeting him back. “me, jake and minhee were just about to go out to eat. do you want to come?” you were taken aback by the offer, looking to jake, asking for silent advice. you could tell by the look on his face that he wanted you to be there, so you agreed.
“perfect! just meet us there, yeah?” you nodded and everyone made their way to their cars. you took a deep breath before getting into yours, mentally preparing yourself for the next hour or so. you had no clue how this was going to go.
his invite actually made you upset. clearly he didn’t know how you felt. if he did, he wouldn’t have invited you to go out to eat with his girlfriend. the only reason you were going was because of jake, you would have felt like a jerk if you left him there to third wheel all alone. if only sunghoon knew about the way you felt.
you arrived to the restaurant, walked in, and quickly found the table they were sat at. you took your seat beside jake, him smiling up at you gratefully. “hey y/n,” minhee said, her smile bright. you faked a smile back in greeting as the waitress came by to get your drink orders.
“so um… how did you guys meet,” jake asked, trying to get a conversation flowing. you nodded at his question, wanting to know the answer.
“oh, our parents are really close friends. they were all having dinner together a while ago, and they brought minhee. we immediately hit it off,” sunghoon said, the smile never leaving his face.
jake nodded, and kept asking questions about their relationship, only making you more upset. not at jake, you knew his intention wasn’t to make you sad. his intentions were always quite the opposite. you just didn’t know how you were supposed to sit there and listen to the boy you were in love with gush about another girl.
throughout dinner, the two were top tier cringe. they would feed each other, giggle, and make small jokes, basically ignoring you and jake. jake would send you sympathetic smiles here and there, his heart hurting for you. he couldn’t even begin to imagine how you were feeling.
after it was over, and just as you were about to walk to your car, sunghoon grabs your attention. “can we talk for a second?” you nodded despite your nerves, and followed him to your car.
“what’s up,” you asked, wanting to get the conversation over with.
“i just want advice…. y/n, i’m in love with her. but… i don’t know how to tell her.” and that’s when your heart shattered. you nearly fell to the floor, but you managed to keep it together.
“a-all i can tell you is to just be straight forward. do it during a date, or just whenever the time feels right. when it’s time, you’ll know.” he smiled at your words, pulling you into a tight hug.
she better hold him tight, give him all her love
you hugged back, simply trying to enjoy the moment while you could. “thank you so much, y/n. you’re an amazing friend.” you sent him a smile, as he jogged back over to minhee, jake coming to you.
as soon as you were sure sunghoon was gone, you broke down. jake caught you before you could fall, the tears flooding down your cheeks. you couldn’t contain your sobs, as you held onto jake for dear life, him holding you just as tight. “hey, it’s alright, y/n. i’m here, it’s okay.”
he stayed there until you calmed down, even offering to take you home. “n-no. i’ll be okay. thank you jake.” all he did was smile, walking back off to his car once he was sure you were alright.
you got home that night, immediately plopping onto your bed, thoughts plagued with sunghoon as always. there was nothing you could do. he belonged to her now, and she belonged to him.
and he’s all that i need to fall into
you just had to accept it. you were in love with park sunghoon. park sunghoon was in love with minhee. and you were sitting in your room alone on a friday night.
but, if he was happy, you were happy. that’s all you’ve ever wanted for sunghoon. as long as he was happy, you were sure you could push through the heartache. the things you would do for park sunghoon.
i fake a smile so he won’t see…

word count: 3,467
summary: Bucky Barnes has a new routine.
warnings: Some swearing
a/n:  This was my March 2020 one shot for my Patreon that they received early access to.  Let me know what y’all think!
Bucky Barnes has a new routine.
Sundays are for sleeping in before eventually making his way to Brooklyn, where he picks up three bouquets and an egg, bacon, and cheese breakfast sandwich from Sal’s bodega before going to the cemetery.  He sits against his sister’s tombstone—his parents’ to his right—and eats his late breakfast.  He sits and talks for a few hours before leaving the flowers on their graves.  He always has to have peonies, since those were Becca’s favorites.
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are for training.  He wakes up at five in the morning to go running with Sam, something he thought would end when Steve went back to be with Peggy Carter.  But he wasn’t bitter.  No.
But which thing he wasn’t bitter about, he’d never tell.
Along with the run, he spends most of the day sparring and battling simulations in the gym.  He has short breaks for meals, but he pretty much is on go until after dinner, when he goes straight to bed.
But Fridays are his favorite.  Because he gets to sleep in until nine-thirty in the morning, which is a luxury he’s not used to.  Then Sam and him grab a late breakfast together before Bucky goes into the city for his therapy session.
And Bucky likes his therapist!  Which he was really, really surprised about!  But Marlene is good.  Marlene is good because she doesn’t placate him.  She calls him out on his shit, and pushes him forward.  Because if it had been up to him, he would’ve stopped seeing her after their third meeting, when she had him drawing with fucking crayons that snapped in his hand way too easily.  But it’s been over a year since he started seeing her, and even though he still has his bad days, his bad days now would’ve been his best days before.
“So, you think you’re finally ready to go through Rebecca’s things?” Marlene asks, looking at him with a peaceful expression.
“I don’t think so, I am,” he says firmly, feeling a rush of triumph as a smile spreads across her lips.  “It’s time, you know?”
She nods in understanding, humming.  “Do you have someone going with you?”
Usually, Sam would go with him for things like this, and just in general.  They were attached at the hip, especially after the whole Steve leaving thing.
Yeah, they were both hit pretty hard with that.
“Yes, but I…”  He sighs, rubbing his hands on his jeans.  “I think this is something I need to do alone.  At least, the going through her stuff part…  But he is going with me to move the stuff to the Tower.”
“Good, good,” she says, her brows slightly furrowed.  “And how are you feeling today about Steve leaving?”
Bucky lets out a huff of air, taking a moment to think about it.  “To be completely honest with you…  I’m kind of over it today.  I have other things to do and yeah, I would’ve liked him to be here for it, but that’s not how it is.  And him leaving is more about him than it is about me.”  He shrugs, his lips pressed into a thin line.  “Just because he decided to go back doesn’t mean he wanted to leave me.”
Marlene sets her clipboard to the side, a warm smile on her face.  “Well, Bucky, I think we’ll end today on that thought.”  She stands up, offering her hand for him to shake as she does everyday.  “You’ve done well today.  You should be proud of yourself.”
He leaves with a wave and a “See you next week!” as he always does.
He hadn’t known about the storage unit full of his sister’s stuff until about eight months ago, when he asked Maria Hill if there was anything left of hers.  He knew that SHIELD had been the ones to take control of her assets when she had no children, since she was the sister of a Howling Commando and the best friend of Captain America.
Becca had died in December of 2013.  He’d missed her by less than six months.
It was heartbreaking when he first found out, and still is, if he was being honest.  But at least he has her stuff to go through, even though he has no idea what all is going to be in the storage unit.  Stevie hadn’t had anything other than what the Smithsonian had snatched up.
The car ride to the storage facility is quiet, Sam at the wheel.  Bucky still hasn’t gotten his license, since he doesn’t see a point.  Why should he when there’s the subway and Uber and even just good old fashioned walking?  “You’ve gotta save the Earth, Sam,” he says when he really feels like irritating the other man.
“You sure you’re ready for this, man?” Sam asks as they stand in front of storage unit 429.
“Yeah,” Buck says, punching in the key code and lifting up the door.  “Yeah, I’m ready.”  He flips the light switch on the wall, and is shocked by just how much stuff there is.  There’s boxes upon boxes upon boxes.
Sam’s hands go to his hips as he looks at it, whistling.  “Alright.  Let’s get it loaded.”
It takes several hours and three trips to get everything from the storage unit to the Tower, and by the end of it, the both of them just collapse on the couch with a couple of beers and a pizza to share between them.
But Saturday morning comes bright and early, and even though it’s his only day out of the week where he has absolutely nothing to do, Bucky knows he has to start going through her things.
The first four boxes are just clothes.  Clothes upon clothes upon clothes.  He finds a baby blue dress that she used to wear for church, starched to perfection, and he holds it to his chest for a long time.  He cries then.
And he knows that the fact that she’s hoarded so many clothes has a lot to do from growing up during the Depression.  He still finds himself falling into old habits of checking the price of food, despite the fact that he never has to worry about money again with his Avengers salary and the backpay from being a POW.
He finds his parents’ wedding rings, and the string of pearls his ma wore for special occasions.
And then he finds an old shoe box, and when he opens it up, he finds letters.  Letters upon letters upon letters.  They’re in bundles, tied together with fraying ribbon.  The paper is yellowed and soft from being folded and unfolded so many times, and he can see the looping black letters that covered the pages.
He takes the ones that look the oldest and unties them, he takes the top one from the stack and sets the rest to the side, before carefully unfolding it.
“Ruthie,” he says quietly as he reads the name at the bottom, not even bothering to read it yet.  “Ruthie…”  His eyes pop open as he suddenly remembers, remembers receiving letters everyday from a girl in the Bronx.  They were never romantic, but it was nice being able to write to someone and not having to hide how bad it was, like he had to with his ma and Becca.  She even sent her picture once, so he could know who he was writing to.  “Ruthie!”
He spends the rest of the day reading the letters, and passes out sometime around four in the morning with his face on a letter.  He takes the letters with him to his family’s graves the next day, reading to them after he replaces the flowers.
It takes him two more days to finish reading all the letters, in between breaks while training and staying up until he absolutely can’t.
He cries a lot while he reads it.  He’s not afraid to admit that.  But it’s nice to remember that he had a friend to listen to him during one of the worst times of his life.
Bucky’s almost afraid to look her up, to find out if she was still alive, and if he could go see her, to thank her.  They wrote back and forth until the day he fell off the train, and he knows that had to be pretty jarring for her.
But then Sam finds out about the letters—it would be hard for him not to, considering that he was walking around with his nose in the letters for days—and it’s all over.
Turns out, she’s alive.  She’s alive, and she’s still in Queens.
He goes the next Saturday, taking his bike all the way to the other borough.  He looks a little intimidating and extremely different from how he looked back then, but he hopes she recognizes him.  He really, really hopes she recognizes him, because otherwise this’ll be real awkward.
He stands in front of the door for a long time, taking his hands in and out of his pockets about eight times before he finally reaches up and knocks.
And then the door opens, and there’s Ruthie.
Well, not Ruthie, though at first glance, you’re the perfect picture of her.  You’ve got her hair and her eyes, and the curve of her lips.  But the nose is different.
“Can I help you?” You ask, raising your eyebrows at him.  You’re wiping your hand on a hand towel, peering at him like you recognize him from somewhere but you don’t know where.
“Hi, uh,” he says slowly.  His throat is suddenly so dry that he can barely talk.  “I’m Bucky.  Bucky Barnes.  I was pen pals with—”
He’s cut off by Ruthie herself appearing in the doorway.  She’s much older—she is ninety-nine, after all—but it’s definitely her.  “Did you say Bucky Barnes?”  The little old lady’s eyes widened as she saw him, her hand over her heart.  “Oh, my stars, it’s really you.  I heard about what happened to you, and I…”  She shakes her head, clicking her tongue.  “Why, it almost gave me a heart attack, you know.”
“Little Ruthie Pratt from Queens,” he says, reaching in his pocket and holding up the letters.  “I found these while, uh, going through my sister’s stuff.”
“I still have mine!” Ruthie says, pulling him inside.
It’s nice and homey and everything that Bucky had thought it would be.  The front foyer is covered in photos, and there’s quite a few of you.  You’re clearly one of Ruthie’s pride and joys, if the sheer amount of them has anything to do about it.
“I used to read these to my grandbaby here,” Ruthie says as she comes back with an old oak jewelry box in hand.  “Anytime she stayed the night—her parents worked a lot when she was growing up—she always asked me to read her one of my ‘Bucky letters.’”
“Grandmama,” you say, cheeks flushing as you avoid his eyes.
“It was so cute!  She used to recite them word for word along with me!” Ruthie teases as they go to the living room.
It’s quaint, with soft pastel colors dominating the room.  He sits on a floral sofa that’s got a circle with dark hair on it, the marking of a furry friend’s favorite spot.  He watches as you move to the kitchen, grabbing a pitcher of what looks like tea and a few glasses.
You sit beside her with the ease of knowing that you belong here, pouring yourself a glass.  “Grandmama, do you want some tea?”
She scoffs, rolling her eyes as she opens the box and looks for the oldest one.  “You keep that monstrosity away from me,” she says.  Seemingly remembering Bucky’s presence, she says, “My daughter’s husband is from Louisiana.  Ridiculous man got both her and my grandbaby addicted to that absolute sludge.”
The secret smile you give him as the two of you listen to her tirade about sweet tea makes him feel at ease, and sets the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Things go on as normal, or as normal as they can.
And Marlene happens to think that all of this is absolutely fantastic for him.  She loves that he’s now spending time with Ruthie and you, reconnecting with his past while understanding that he doesn’t have to be the person he was in the letters.
He’s different.  He’s not the Bucky that Ruthie knew back then.
It’s an unusually warm day in November four months later when he takes you out for a coffee, just the two of you.  And it isn’t a date—really, it isn’t—but he finds himself wanting it to be about halfway through his second coffee.
And that’s why he starts talking about dating to Marlene, who had, quite frankly, been waiting for him to realize his feelings for a while.
“I think I’m in love with her,” he says as he storms into his therapy session, eyes wild and hair a disarray.  He’s clearly been worrying real hard about it.
Marlene looks up at him, peering over the silver rim of her glasses.  “Oh, really?” She says nonchalantly, as though she doesn’t have you in her notes about him.  “And why is that?”
Bucky can’t help the frown on his face as he realizes that she didn’t even ask who he was talking about, because she knew.  “I…  I don’t know,” he says, slumping into his usual chair.  “She makes me happy.  Happier than I’ve ever been.  And she always makes me laugh, even at the most inappropriate of times.”  His gaze softens the more he thinks about you.  “And she isn’t scared of me.  She doesn’t judge me.  She’s read about everything I did in the war, even before HYDRA, and she doesn’t care.”  His hands are sweating as he rubs them together.  “Actually, it’s not that she doesn’t care—she does care—but she cares because she… she loves me.”
You love him.  And sure, he knows that.  You’ve said that you love him multiple times, even if you only mean it as a friend way.
But the thought that he has someone who loves him that doesn’t have to is… groundbreaking.
“She loves me, and she wants me to be okay,” he says, looking up at Marlene then.
His therapist has a pleased look in her eyes, even if she won’t let it show with a smile.  “I think she’s good for you,” she says simply, her pen held loosely in her hand.  “Are you seeing her again soon?”
“I’m seeing her tomorrow night,” he says, his heart growing light.  “We’re grabbing a few drinks to celebrate her finally graduating from cosmetology school.”
It’s a big deal for you, completely something.  You’re smart, there’s no denying that, but when it comes to schooling…  You’d done well in high school, but college proved to be the bane of your existence.
You’d dropped out in the middle of your junior year, and that had been it.  You’d moved to Queens to live with Ruthie after, working various low level jobs and trying to find something that fit.
But you’d fit in at cosmetology school.  Hell, you excelled.  And you enjoyed it!  You enjoyed waking up in the morning and going to your classes!
You cried when you got your certificate, and it was now framed in Ruthie’s house until you start your first salon job in two weeks.
“Are you going to tell her about your feelings?” Marlene asks curiously.
Now that makes him pause.
“... Should I?” Bucky asks, feeling a wave of anxiety coming over him.  “What if she doesn’t feel the same way?  And she sees me as just a friend?”
“If she’s really your friend, she won’t abandon you just because you tell her you have romantic feelings for her.”
“You sure about that?”
Marlene fixes him with a look, raising one perfectly sculpted eyebrow.
He runs his tongue over his teeth.  “Fine.  You’re sure,” he says, slumping a little in his chair.  “Doesn’t mean it’s easy.”
She snorts, making a note on her pad.  “I never said it was going to be easy, Bucky.  Doesn’t mean it can’t be done.”
The next night, he spends an hour and a half trying to decide what to wear.  “It shouldn’t be this hard,” he grumbles as he switches shirts for the forty-ninth time.  “It’s just drinks.”
Sam, however, is having a great time watching his new best friend freak out over seeing a girl for the first time.  “I mean, she already agreed to going out with your ugly mug, man.  It’s not gonna matter what you wear.”
And in some way, that helps.  A little.
But he does have to threaten Sam with bodily harm if he spies on his date that’s not really a date.
He almost boxes him the ear when he insists for the fourth time that it’s a date.
He shows up at your door with a bouquet of flowers from Sal’s bodega, the buttons of his dark blue henley left open, exposing a smattering of chest hair.
When you open the door, the air is knocked from his lungs.  You look absolutely radiant.  The light from the sinking sun is giving you a halo-like glow, and he’s sure, not for the first time, that you’re an actual angel.
“Hi,” you say, a flush on your cheeks as you see the flowers.  “Are those…  Are those for me?”
He nods dumbly, trying to swallow down the lump in his throat.  “Y-Yes,” he says, pushing them into your arms.  “As a congrats.  For, you know, graduating.  And stuff.”
“Thank you,” you say as you take them, handing them to Ruthie.
She’s standing just inside the door, a giddy look on her face as she holds the flowers, watching you take the motorcycle helmet from his hands.  “Have her back by twelve!”
“Grandmama!”
“Fine!  Twelve-thirty!”
You’re clearly embarrassed by her antics as he helps you on behind him, guiding your arms around his waist.
“You ready?” He asks, his voice breathy.
A shiver runs down your spine as you nod, wrapping your arms tighter around him as he starts the bike, taking off.
“She doesn’t actually mean that,” you say as he leads you into the tiny, out of the way bar.  You’re fixing your hair, trying your best to appear presentable.  “I’m grown, you know.  I don’t…  I don’t have a curfew.”
A slow smile spreads over his lips as he listens to you ramble.  “I know,” he says finally, figuring he should put you out of your misery.  “Ruthie does like to tease those she loves.”
The bar is quaint, clearly a local place that tourists haven’t invaded.  He leads you to a high table, calling out your order to the lone bartender.
“So, I—”
“I like you,” Bucky says, unintentionally cutting you off with a wince.  “I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to interrupt you, but I really, really like you, and I really, really want this to be a date, but if you don’t feel the same way then I completely understand and we can just forget that I ever said anything and everything can just go back to normal and that might be the best thing because, quite frankly, I haven’t dated since the forties and I have no idea how dating is supposed to work nowadays, but I’d really like to try it with you but only if you—”
His rambling is cut off as you place your hand on his, intertwining your fingers.  “Okay,” you say, like it’s the easiest thing ever.  “It’s a date.”
He stares at you for an embarrassingly long time, his mouth dry.  “Uh…  What?” He says quietly.  His heart is pounding at an unnaturally fast pace, and he honestly thinks he might be on the verge of a heart attack.
“I like you, too,” you say, smiling at the bartender as he brings you over your drinks.  You look so beautiful, your eyes the brightest thing in the dim lighting of the bar.  “So this is a date.”
“Okay,” he breathes out, a wave of relief washing over him.  “It’s a date.”
He’s a little starstruck as you continue on with what you were going to say before, a pink blush dusting his cheeks.  Your hand stays in his for the rest of the night, occasionally giving a little squeeze as though you’re reminding him that you’re still there and you’re not going to disappear.
And it feels good.
And okay, Marlene may have been right.
And yeah, Fridays might be good.  But as he sits there with you until the late hours of the night, he’s sure: Saturdays are his new favorite day.  Because Saturdays brought him a new beginning when he wasn’t expecting it.

Chaos.
Another for the Phic Phight! This one kinda combines two prompts and I had so much fun writing it! In this, Danny and Tucker don’t know Sam plays video games yet. 5,063 words.
"What do you mean you don’t feel the same way? We´ve had a mutual crush on each other for years." Sam says angrily after finally confessing her love to him. But Danny´s heart was beating hard for someone else entirely. Prompt by phantomfana.
Danny wants to ask his crush to the upcoming school dance. Prompt by Rikaleeta.
-----
It was another long night of ghost hunting for Danny. Technus took up the first part of the night, trying to take over the park’s new security system. Tucker was fortunately still awake to help him out with that. Then Johnny and Kitty rolled in, but they weren’t looking for trouble, they just wanted a date night and swore they wouldn’t be a problem. Apparently Fridays were their days off for “everything but each other”. Danny was a romantic, but he didn’t know if this was sweet or nauseating. Ember had put up a good fight, though. He was proud he only had one injury to tend to. He had dodged most of her attacks, but she was still a pretty advanced ghost. And, of course, Danny had caught the Box Ghost six, count them, SIX times. How did he always manage to get out?! He wasn’t difficult to take down, he was just a pest.
Danny sighed as he sat down at his computer chair. It was only 12:30 am, and it was a Friday. He could sleep in tomorrow and he deserved at least a couple hours of fun. He logged into his online gaming account and saw Tucker was online. Figures. He pulled up the chat anyway.
Astrohaunt: Hey Tuck. Still up?
Technopedia: You know it. Chaos signed on about a half hour ago and I’m not passing up the opportunity.
Astrohaunt: Dude is so good it’s unreal!
Technopedia: He goes to our school, I tracked one of his IP addresses and he logged in at school a few times.
Astrohaunt: Tucker wtf. That’s creepy!
Technopedia: I just want to make sure Chaos is actually a kid and not Lancer again!
Astrohaunt: I still can’t wrap my mind around Lancer playing Doomed…
Technopedia: Same. But Chaos IP is different from Lancer, so we good. Unless more teachers play Doomed.
Astrohaunt: I hate you for putting that image into my brain.
Technopedia: Sorry dude. But quick come join before someone else gets Chaos.
Danny, Tucker, and Chaos had made a great team. Whenever Chaos was around, they were actually able to progress through the game. They played several rounds until Tucker was caught by his mom and was forced to sign off, but Danny and Chaos kept playing.
TeamChaos: Hey, what’s up?
Astrohaunt: Omg dude you’re so awesome.
TeamChaos: Ha, thanks. Gotta blow off steam somehow.
Astrohaunt: Tell me about it! Between Lancer’s three projects and midterms and...other stuff...this is my only time to actually chill. I’ve been so stressed!
TeamChaos: Same. I did finish one of the projects though. I’m always here if you need to talk, you know.
Astrohaunt: Wow, I may just take you up on that offer. I’ve had a rough night.
TeamChaos: Lay it on me.
And so Danny, sparing the ghost hunting details, stayed up chatting with Chaos until 5 am. He got along really well with the guy, they had a lot of similar interests. This was just the first of many up-all-night conversations they shared. After a few months, Danny felt a special connection with Chaos, and yet, he didn’t even know his name!
Astrohaunt: We’ve been talking all these months and I still don’t know your name. I’m Danny.
TeamChaos: Oh, thought you knew. It’s Sam!
Astrohaunt: Hey! One of my best friends is named Sam!
TeamChaos: You don’t say!!!
The next day at school, Danny pulled Tucker over to him, whispering, “Dude, help. I think I might be gay....”
“What?!” Tucker shouted.
“Quiet, Tuck!”
“Okay, well uh...why?” Tucker sent him a weird look and took a step back.
“No, not you. Chaos. I think I have a crush on Chaos.” Danny ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what to do! I never thought I’d be...you know. Chaos and I just have good conversations and he’s always there to listen to me when I need to vent. I thought maybe I found another best friend but...this is different. Chaos is so cool and I’m crushing and I don’t even know who he is or what he looks like! Or if he feels the same way! Maybe I’m just stupid and-”
“Dude, chill. You’re jumping too far ahead of yourself. Whichever way you, you know, swing...I’m still your best friend.” Tucker pulled out his PDA. “Let me see what I can find out. I know Chaos goes to our school.”
“Thanks, Tuck. As if being half ghost wasn’t hard enough! Oh, and he’s in our class, because he’s talked me through assignments and knows what they are and stuff. He’s almost as good as explaining things as Sam. Crap...Sam. Don’t tell her about this!” Danny started fidgeting.
“Well,” Tucker raised his eyebrows in surprise, “I can tell you with absolute certainty that Chaos is definitely a girl.”
“You found out who Chaos is?!”
“What, like it’s hard?” Tucker chuckled. “I traced the IP addresses she uses. I know who she is. So do you,” Tucker smirked, “It shocked me at first, but it makes total sense! And I can totally see why you like her.”
“Really?” Danny let out a breath in relief. “Okay that makes me feel a lot better...hey, maybe I can ask Chaos to the dance next Saturday!”
Tucker rested a hand on Danny’s shoulder. “Go for it. Ask Sam. I’m almost positive she’ll say yes.”
“Okay, I will...wait, not Sam! Chaos!” Danny clarified. “Well, actually, I think Chaos told me her name was Sam. Ha, small world. I can’t wait to introduce Sam to Sam. I think they would really get along.”
Tucker busted out laughing, “Oh, dude. You go ahead and do that.” He left Danny standing there in the hallway, still laughing all the way to his next class.
Danny, a bit confused by Tucker’s laughter, shook his head and smiled to himself. Okay, good. He’d had enough identity crises to fill a lifetime. Chaos was definitely a girl. Now if he just knew Chaos returned his feelings, things might actually work out for him this time and he could actually have a girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Sam was having an internal debate of her own. Sitting in a class where the teacher couldn’t give two shits about what the students were doing, she had always used this class as her thinking time. Usually her thinking-about-Danny time. She nervously clicked her pen as she thought about recent events.
She and Danny spent so much time chatting online when they weren’t hanging out in person. Danny was a little bit more bold online, probably because he didn’t have to interact face-to-face or risk his pants falling down in public again. Online, they talked about everything. No topic was off limits. Plus, Sam felt like their friendship had only grown even stronger when they could chat online and not have to worry about blushing or getting teased by Tucker. Chatting online took away all the pressure and made it much easier to connect with Danny.
Danny hadn’t said anything yet, of course. He was probably scared. Hell, she was scared. She was already so in love with him, and getting closer online only further solidified that fact. She had never been in love before, and even though she hunts ghosts, this was more terrifying! She was fairly certain he returned her feelings, but both were too chicken to actually make that final step. They’ve been best friends forever. She didn’t want to mess up their already great dynamic or force Tucker to be the third wheel, though he did insist he was more than okay with that and encouraged them to finally get together.
Sam stopped clicking her pen as she suddenly remembered it was senior year. They hadn’t picked colleges yet, but whether they ended up going to the same school or not, things were going to change. Danny was very attractive, and going off to college meant girls may actually approach him when they didn’t know his parents were ghost fighters. The fact had never bothered Sam, but she did kind of like how it kept most girls at school from asking him out or giving him attention. Valerie had been a challenge, especially because she was a ghost hunter herself and probably wanted to get tips from his parents. Sam was glad that relationship ended relatively early. It was too hard on her. Joyous or not, though, she was still mad at Valerie for how she broke his heart.
But that was 2 years ago. They had all moved on and friendships were more or less mended across the board. This made Sam glance at her favorite picture of her and Danny. Tucker had taken the candid picture and it was now her phone’s background. In it, Danny was giving Sam a piggyback ride. Her arms were lightly strung around his neck, legs looped around his waist. Danny had kept going in the opposite direction Sam told him to go, which frustrated her but also made her laugh. She had rested her chin on his shoulder, her face pressed right up against his. Danny was looking at her and Tucker had captured that rare moment when Sam had a huge grin on her face, still laughing. She smiled at the picture. They would be okay no matter what. Their friendship would survive.
Anyway, Sam also realized she had already come close to losing Danny, in more ways than one. Whether it was to other girls or a ghost, there was always that anxiety stirring in her head that she could lose him entirely some day. Life was too short. She needed to take the plunge for both of them and just get them both over this hurdle, and they could finally, finally, actually get together.
Sam made her decision. It was now or never. She was going to tell him. Today. The trio was meeting up at Danny’s house later anyway, and if she got there early enough, she could talk to him before Tucker showed up and teased them about it. Sam firmly nodded her head to herself, a confirmation of her decision. It was finally time.
After school, Danny was pacing in his room, trying to figure out how he wanted to do this. Asking a girl to the dance wasn’t a huge deal, and yet at the same time, it was. He would rather ask in person, but he still didn’t know what Chaos looked like, so asking in person seemed to be off the table. He could look in the yearbook for all the girls named Sam at their school. He could already omit one Sam Manson from that list. How many Sams could possibly attend their school? It would be easier to ask Tucker, though. Tucker already knew who she was. Sam and Tucker were on their way over right now. When Sam wasn’t paying attention, he could ask Tucker for Sam’s full name.
Chaos Sam, not best friend Sam. God, this was so confusing. Why were girls so hard for him? Freshman year, Paulina only liked his ghost half and wouldn’t give his human half the time of day. Sophomore year, Valerie hated his ghost half and that hatred was more important to her than her feelings for his human half. Junior year, he had been denying that he was in love with his best friend. And now that he had finally accepted that he did like his best friend as much more than a friend, a new girl entered the picture and he now found himself trying to choose between two Sams. Because it apparently wasn’t hard enough for him already to make the biggest and most important change he could possibly make in a friendship, let’s add another crush to the mix and give them the same name.
Sam. Best friend Sam - that’s who he was planning on asking originally, even if he chickened out and had to ask her as a friend instead. Plus, he and Sam had somehow gotten closer recently, and he was pretty sure she liked him. Sure, it was only because Tucker told him so, but it was a possibility. The thing was, he didn’t want to ruin things. Especially because he truly didn’t know how Sam, best friend Sam, felt about him. She was a tough and courageous girl, surely she would have said something by now if it were true. So Tucker must be pulling his leg.
But he did have another option - Chaos Sam, who may actually return his feelings. Sure, the feelings weren’t nearly as strong as what he felt for his best friend, but the feelings were still there. Plus, if he got rejected by Chaos, it would be less heartbreaking than being rejected by Sam, someone he had known for years rather than months. He could deal with losing a newer friend, but not one of his best friends. Sam was too important and he knew he needed her in his life.
Danny sighed. This was really hard, but he made a decision. It was easier to go with Chaos than risk ruining things with Sam. Danny had enough drama going on in his life already, he needed an easy win.
He broke from his thoughts when the doorbell rang. He ran downstairs and opened it, only slightly surprised to see Sam there. She was usually early for things. He and Tuck were more prone to being late.
“Hey, Sam. Come on in!” Danny moved so Sam could enter his house. He shut the door and followed her upstairs and back to his room as she returned his greeting. She was pacing the same path he just had, muttering quietly to herself. She looked nervous. “Something on your mind?”
Sam was startled out of her thoughts. “Huh? Oh yeah.” She noticed his disheveled appearance, also noting he was fidgety. Was he going to do what she was about to do? “What about you, you look like you’ve been thinking a little too hard about something.” She smiled softly.
Danny chuckled, “Yeah, but it’ll resolve itself soon. I’ll worry about it after the movies. Tuck should be here any second. Oh, but I’m glad you’re early. Can you help me with something quick?”
“Of course.” Sam followed him to his desk, smiling and rolling her eyes when he pointed to a homework problem. “I should have known.”
Danny gave her a lopsided smile and watched as she showed him how to do the problem in her perfect handwriting. It took no more than a couple of minutes. Now, they were just waiting for Tucker to arrive.
Sam looked at the time. He would be here soon. She needed to do this now. She needed to tell Danny. She couldn’t wait until after the movies for him to tell her. She had already waited long enough and couldn’t bear another second.
“Danny, can I talk to you for a second?” She sat down on his bed and gestured for him to do the same.
Danny could sense the seriousness in her voice, and nodded anxiously. He was scared when Sam was serious about things. It was usually something bad.
“Danny…” She decided to get straight to the point. “I like you. As in like-like you. More than like, and more than a friend. And we’ve been doing this dancing around for at least 4 years now and I’m sick of it. I just want to be with you already. What do you say?” Sam held her breath as she waited for Danny to answer.
He stared at her with wide eyes before nervously rubbing the back of his neck and turning his attention to his shoes, avoiding eye contact with the goth. God, why him?! He had stupidly thought, for once, things would be easier for him this time. He had already sent an offline message to Chaos that he wanted to ask her something, and then Sam had to come along and tell him what he had wanted to hear for some time now. But he couldn’t blow Chaos off when he had already somewhat asked. Of course, his life just had to be complicated every step of the way. He really liked both girls and didn’t want to hurt his best friend. Regardless, he had to be honest. He owed Sam that much. “Well, I mean, yeah, but…”
“But what?” Sam whispered, clearly already upset. Fuck. Fuck fuck FUCK. This was exactly what he didn’t want to happen. He decided to try going with Chaos so he could avoid heartbreak from his best friend. The very thing he had been so afraid of, he was doing to her right now.
Danny sighed again. “But I can’t. I’m so sorry, Sam.” It was hard to choke out, but he said it, and he felt terrible. He pressed his lips together and kept staring at his shoes until Sam lifted his chin up, forcing him to look at her.
“What do you mean you don’t feel the same way? We’ve had mutual crushes on each other for years!” Sam said angrily, feeling her heart break as her best friend and love of her life rejected her confession of love. She was so sure he returned her feelings! Especially after all the great conversations they had shared online these last few months. “Or, at least, I thought we did.” Tears swelled in her eyes. Did he lead her on? “I-I need an explanation, Danny,” she quietly stated after he didn’t continue.
Danny frowned and his heart ached. He didn’t want to hurt his best friend like this. Hell, he really liked her! Of course their crushes were mutual! And if this had happened 6 months ago instead of now, he would have jumped at the chance. But now...now he had Chaos and already forced himself to stick with his decision. It was easy with Chaos; there was no friendship to risk, no denying of being lovebirds or brushing off kisses as fakeout makeouts. Plus, he couldn’t lie to his best friend. She would know if he was lying. And he already told himself she deserved the truth. “There’s...someone else…”
“What?” Sam whispered before turning angry again, “Paulina? Valerie? Star?” she spat out.
Danny shook his head, “Ew, no...it’s someone I met online...I’m so sorry, Sam. I like you a lot, I really do, but I think I’ve already come to the conclusion that I like this girl I met online, Chaos, and I have to try to see that through.”
Many emotions crossed Sam’s face as she pieced together what he just said. At first she was upset, but as he explained himself, she felt disbelief, confusion, anger, and finally, hope. He couldn’t really be that clueless, right? “Show me.”
“Huh? I mean, I don’t actually know what she looks like, but we message every night and she really understands me! I know it sounds ridiculous, but-”
“Show me,” Sam repeated. “Show me her profile.”
“You’re not going to hurt her, are you?” Danny questioned cautiously.
“No, of course not. Just shut up and show me the profile.” Sam was more calm now, and that was kind of scary. Even though Sam said she wouldn’t hurt Chaos, he didn’t want to give her the chance. But he knew how stubborn his friend was, and eventually in whatever way, she would force the information out of him.
Danny sighed and pulled up the profile to show Sam. “I’m sorry, Sam. I’m still your best frien-”
“Shut up.” Sam scrolled through what Danny pulled up for her and pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. Closing her eyes slowly, she took a deep breath. “Didn’t Chaos tell you her name?”
“Uh,” Danny thought, “oh yeah! She said her name was Sam, because I thought she was a boy at first and I had an existential crisis, but then Tucker told me-”
“Danny. I’m Sam.”
“No I know, and sure it’ll be a little weird cause you’re Sam and she’s Sam, it’s confusing, but I-”
Sam interrupted him once again. She could hear Tucker’s footsteps approaching. She was running out of time to not make this a spectacle. “No, Danny. Chaos. Sam. Me. I’m Sam. I am Sam,”
Tucker only heard the tail end of the conversation as he entered the room. Never able to pass up a comedic opportunity, he smirked and added “I am Sam. Sam I am. I do not like green eggs and ham!”
It was suddenly silent in the room as his friends seized conversation and glared at him. Oops.
“Oh, am I interrupting something?” Tucker could see the fire in Sam’s eyes. “Uh, oh wait I forgot my...sock. I’ll be downstairs!” He raced out of the room.
Sam turned her attention back to Danny. “No, you stupid fucking MORON. I am Chaos. You’ve been talking to me the whole time. I thought you knew that!” Danny stared at her blankly until she pulled out her phone and he watched her log into her account, proving it to him. Sure enough, it was Chaos’s profile. He could see all the direct messages between them, including his offline message about wanting to ask her something.
“Wait, you? You’re Sam? I mean, Chaos? I mean Sam?” Danny looked back and forth between the profile and his best friend.
“UGH!” Sam shouted as she threw her hands in the air. “Yes, Danny. That’s me! Did you really not notice that Chaos was the same age as me and a girl who goes to our school? We have the same name and interests! Didn’t you wonder why it was so easy to talk right off the bat? I thought you put that all together and us just pretending to not know each other was a little bit you were trying to do or something!”
Danny stared at her as he continued to piece it all together. He was definitely embarrassed. He felt so stupid. How could he not tell that Chaos was Sam, his best friend since 7th grade? Talk about being totally clueless.
Wait. Clueless? Well, fuck! He got the nickname now!
His eyes flickered back and forth as he thought everything through. Eventually, he started to crack a smile. “Wait, so I’ve had a crush on you and also you? You’re the same person! This is great! Do you know what this means?!”
Sam slapped her forehead and began walking downstairs. “I don’t even know if this is worth it anymore…”
“Wait, how come Tuck and I never knew you played video games! We can enter team tournaments! You’re so good!” Danny chased after her.
Tucker watched as Sam grumbled about Danny caring more about video games than her. An excited Danny was right on her tail.
“Tucker! Sam is Chaos! I’ve been in love with Sam this whole time!” Danny explained.
“Tucker, I need you to refrain me from slapping his stupid clueless face,” Sam started.
“Wait, you didn’t know Sam was Chaos? Dude! I thought I was obvious about that!” Tucker began laughing at Danny.
“I know, so did I.” Sam crossed her arms over her chest.
“Danny, you can calculate levels of rocket fuel and figure out how to get us to Mercury or something,” Tucker started.
“Mars, actually,” Danny corrected.
“But you can’t figure out that your best friend and your crush are the same person? You’re more than Captain Clueless, you’re like….Lieutenant Clueless? That’s like, bigger right?” Tucker continued.
“I don’t think that’s how it works, Tuck,” Sam chimed in.
“Shut up Sam, this isn’t about you,” Tucker immediately stopped his train of thought when he felt Sam glaring daggers at him. “Heh, uh. Except it does. It actually has nothing to do with me. I’m sorry I told you to shut up, please don’t hurt me!” He threw his hands up in front of himself in defense.
“Relax, Tucker. I’m more angry with this fucking dingus,” she pointed her thumb in Danny’s direction.
The halfa was about to protest, then closed his mouth. “That’s fair, I deserve that.”
“I can’t even look at you right now. You scared me! I poured out my emotions to you. I thought you were rejecting me and that I would have to change my name and move to a different country! Wait, are you still rejecting me?” Sam stopped her pacing to look at him.
“Of course not, Sammy!”
“Oh don’t you ‘Sammy’ me! I told you I love you, you stupid fucking idiot!” Sam began throwing pillows at Danny, who expertly dodged them (though as a result, Tucker got hit in the face by one).
“Technically, you didn’t say ‘love’ you said ‘like’”, Danny offered as Tucker shook his head and slashed finger across his neck, signaling Danny to stop talking.
“Oh, I’m sorry! This is all my fault! I’m going to go jump off a cliff now!” Sam growled and Danny let out a small “oomph” as one of the pillows finally got him.
“I’m out. Good luck, bro!” Tucker quickly slipped out the door, leaving Danny and Sam alone.
Sam was about to follow Tucker out when Danny stopped her, “please don’t leave!” She still had angry tears in her eyes. He frowned. This was not how he expected things to go. She watched him for a few seconds before sitting down on the couch, refusing to look at him. “Sam I’m so sorry, this is just a huge misunderstanding.”
“No, Danny. It’s not. You were going to turn me down to go out with someone else.”
“But that someone was still you!”
“Yeah, but you didn’t know that! We’ve been friends for years, and you were more interested in someone you just met a few months ago! I don’t want to be anyone’s second choice, Danny! I’ve been standing by for years as you continuously chose other girls over me. I thought we were done with that, and that you were finally choosing me first, but you won’t and you never will and I’m so stupid.” Sam put her head in her hands as she tried her hardest not to let tears fall.
And that was when he finally figured it out. It wasn’t just the moment of rejection, it was years of rejection, and at her biggest confession, she still thought he was choosing someone over her. Not to mention, Tucker witnessed most of the conversation. Sam rarely showed her emotions. She always had her heart guarded, and he knew this. Tucker knew this. Hell, she didn’t even tell them she was rich until after a few years of friendship. It took them a while to get her to open up to them. She was a pretty private person. She was probably already hurt like this before. And now, she was probably embarrassed.
“You’re definitely not stupid. I’m stupid. I should have known it was you. That was actually what I really liked about Chaos, she reminded me of you.”
Sam forced a small sarcastic laugh, “Yeah, right.”
“No really,” Danny sat on the couch next to her and grabbed her hand, placing it in both of his. “Sam, you’re absolutely incredible. How dumb would I have to be to not notice?” Sam gave him a pointed look. “Okay yeah but it’s not the way you think it is. I liked Chaos because she was a lot like you. She reminded me of you. And it just seemed easier to go with her because she was basically you, but she and I didn’t have a really great friendship that could have gotten ruined if we broke up or something. I could live without her, but I can’t live without you. You’re always my number one. Always have been, always will be. Even if I did just fuck everything up. I’m so sorry, Sam. I’m ready to be with you, if you’ll still have me.”
Sam stayed silent and stared at her lap, processing this new information. Of course she would forgive him; she always did. She just needed a little time.
Danny was getting nervous that he really did fuck this up for good. This was so fucking important! He couldn’t risk fucking this up! Sensing her hesitation, Danny tried one more thing to get her back. One thing he hasn’t done before. One thing he just learned how to perfect.
“Sammy, I’m sorry,” a duplicate popped up next to her on the other side of the couch, startling her.
“Please forgive me?” Another duplicate was floating in front of her, hanging upside down, hair flopping all over the place.
“I know I’m a dummy but,” Sam snapped her head towards a third duplicate.
“I’m only a dummy because I’m in love. With you,” the real Danny finished. Sam looked back and forth between all the Dannys.
“We’re sorry, Sammy,” all the duplicates said at once.
Sam was trying really hard to hold back a smile. “You learned how to duplicate,” she stated simply.
Original Danny grabbed her hands. “Sam. I will make this up to you. I promise.”
She could hear the determination in his voice and sighed. “You better.”
Danny smiled and hugged her. “Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!! I love you so much!”
Sam pushed him off of her. “I love you too, you fucking idiot.”
“But I get to be your idiot!” Sam couldn’t hold her laughter back anymore. “Oh!” Danny shouted, “Will you go to the dance with me? Please?”
Sam pretended to ponder the answer before saying “alright”.
“Yay!” All 4 Dannys cheered. The duplicates on either side of her kissed her cheeks as the real Danny kissed her forehead tenderly. The final duplicate, feeling left out, squeezed his way in to give her a hug.
Sam was now roaring with laughter before kissing the real Danny sweetly. “You know, duplicates won’t always get you out of trouble,” she warned.
“Yeah, but they could come in handy for other things,” he wagged his eyebrows up and down suggestively before passionately kissing her, the duplicates kissing her neck and touching her in near-dangerous places.
Sam bit back a moan, eyes lustful before smirking, “I think you just found a way to make it up to me.” She began dragging the real Danny and one of his duplicates back to his room. Fuck the movies.

Meian settled into a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that he rented from some fancy schmancy place. His date would be waiting for him not too far from that point. From her profile photos, she was cute. Small from what it seemed, but when you’re 6’5” most people were small. The profile was very obviously not written by herself seeing as most the answers included “my friend likes…”
He pulled up the map and sent an ETA through the app. He rolled the window down, letting an arm fold out while his hand remained on the wheel. Driving was his serenity and it was a damn shame he couldn’t drive as often as he wanted to. He was a humble man, not one to brag about his garage of cars. Not one to talk about how he liked to fix’em up.
It took all of 15 minutes to reach the meet up point. He saw you, but your head was down in your phone, hand along your neck and fingers tapping at the skin. He was supposed to be your boyfriend for the day. He had a date or two already to which he was tipped generously for his time. It was a natural thing for him. He was a relationship type of guy. He was always more on the natural air of things, confidence coming with age. With a face like his and a career like his, it could only grow with each person who approached him.
But for some reason, seeing you look so nervous while waiting for him made him want to not lay it on so heavy. Others he laid it thick with the ‘doll face,’ ‘pup’, ‘sugar’. (One date he didn’t even need to leave his room. It was a zoom call where he had his camera off. She had told him ‘I want you to piss my parents off.’ )
You looked up to see your date for the evening, Meian Shugo. He was in a black Jeep, high off the ground. His smile was broad, confident, gleaming. All the confidence you had built up from Shoyo had suddenly vanished. You thought you’d do so well this time but the butterflies swarmed in your stomach so violently you feared their wings would cut through your stomach.
There was a moment of silence, both of you staring at each other until he barked a laugh and hopped out of the car. Oh lord he was huge. Massive. You resisted every fiber of your being that wanted to ask him about the weather.
Meian placed a hand gently between your shoulder blades, guiding you to the opened passenger side door, “I don’t bite… much.” With a wink, he closed your door and sat on his own side.
“I-is this your car?” Your stammering was adorable.
“Nah,” he waved a large hand, “Rented it. I do own one like it back home.” He gestured a thumb behind him, pointing to a figurative ‘home.’ You nodded once and fluttered fingers to your cheeks, covering the blush when you felt his eyes on you.
He blinked at your non-winter-weather outfit; light wash and high waisted denim shorts with a thick belt. They looked big, but he figured that was the style now’a days. You had on some cream colored spaghetti strap tank top that cropped just above the belt. And a dusty pink cardigan made of…
“Ey, hon, what’s this fabric? Mind if I-?” He pinched a little between his fingers, rubbing the material. It was soft. Really soft. Nothing like he’s seen before.
“Polyester? I think??” You pulled it off and looked at the tag, “Yep! It’s not mine though. It’s my friend’s. They likes to dress me up.”
“Aren’t ya cold?”
“A little, but we’re in a car so it’s no big deal.”
His arm hung out the window, pulling back in to shift gears here and there. You stared out to the horizon, stiff as a board. You weren’t the easiest to talk to at first, often muttering single worded responses.
You couldn’t help it. He was handsome as hell. Shoyo had a boyish charm to him, especially with how energetic he was, but Meian. He was a man. A sharp edge to him that definitely couldn’t be read as anything other than comfortable masculinity.
Snapping out of your daze, you perked. You were going across a bridge. A beautiful one at that. You could see the sun just above the ocean. Probably an hour or two before sunset. Both of your hands gripped the car window,  “Meian,” you called with a slight pitch in your voice, “this is gorgeous!” You beamed at him a tad over-excitedly.
His lazy smile broadened, “Figured you’d like it.” It did say in your profile that it was one of your favorite spots to be at.
Within another set of minutes, awkward silence melted into comfort. The car stopped in an empty parking lot. It wasn’t like there were many people at the beach around 4 PM on a winter weekday. Your eyes were glued on the man as you watched his hand shift the gear to park and suddenly you remembered his proposition.
You were learning how to drive a stick shift.
“Alright pup, gonna teach ya a new trick,” He reached underneath the seat, craning it back as far as it could go. Not like it was far considering how long those legs were. Nervously you unbuckled, leaning on the console to peer at the petals.
Your heart stopped and your lips pursed slightly. Meian took one look at your expression and bit back his laugh. You looked up to him with a crease in your brow, “Why are there three petals?”
Soon enough, you were in the driver’s seat and he was in the passenger side. You searched for the lever to pull the seat up and blushed when Meian reached under to show you. At this point, it wasn’t even that he was uncomfortable to be with. It was quite the opposite. He was relaxed and maybe a little teasing. If people were colors, he’d be a serene seafoam. No, what made you nervous was how attractive you found him and how he so perfectly acted out the role of boyfriend.
“Let’s start in first, ‘kay?”
You nodded, swallowing down your anxiety. Push out of your comfort zone. More like shove you out the comfort window.
“Remember which one’s the break?” Meian peered to your legs, foot hesitantly over what you thought was the break, “Good! Now what?”
“Emergency break?” Now it was your hand’s turn to hover.
“Atta girl!” He was impressed at your memory. Most people would’ve forgotten that step if they only drove automatic. When his eyes met yours he could swear to god he saw the sparks light up in them. So you’re a praise learner, huh?
You glanced down, moving your left foot to the clutch and pressed it down. While still on break, your hand slid onto the gear shift. You waited. Picking up on the subtle clue, the captain nodded, “Yep, go to first.” His right hand hooked to the handle by the window casually.
You shifted into first. Feeling his eyes on you, you wanted to show him that you remembered his mini lesson and peered at the dash to the RPM, watching it move up before slowly letting go of the clutch. Just like that, the car began rolling.
Meian’s palm smacked the roof of the car as he hollered, lop-sided lips tugging up. You bounced excitedly, eyes switching between the gear shift, the petals, and the RPM.
You switched gears successfully not once, but twice. Each time, Meian showered you in praise. Your heart fluttered and it made you want to do more. When you turned the wheel, he encouraged you to go to the road. Anxiety crept up in you and you felt your palms sweat on the leather. He leaned the seat back, “Nothin’ta worry about. You’re a natural. Just keep doin’ what you’re doin’ and you’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” Your voice wavered with giddiness and uncertainty. Should he really be trusting your novice driving skills like this? You seriously questioned his judgment calls.
He peered at you from the corner of his eye, taking in the laser focus you had on the road. Hell, you even stopped gnawing your lip like it was the last food to grace the earth. He crossed his arms and tilted his head back, deciding to close his eyes, “Sure as I can be, pup. Gotta question for ya.” You hummed, leaning forward slightly to view the empty road better. He continued, “How’d ya get so good at multitasking?”
You took a moment to answer, making sure to shift appropriately as you picked up speed, “I do a lot of art – pottery and all. Professionally.” You really couldn’t multitask as well as he thought you could, but you wanted to impress him, “It’s kind of like a pottery wheel with petal and speed and hand things. That’s the closest I can get, though. There isn’t a lot of multitasking in the other art things I do, really. Not like this.”
The Jackal’s captain fully looked at you in that moment, a small ‘huh’ leaving his lips. He took in the bit of clay that lodged itself under your bitten nails and the small stripe of white paint on your thighs from propping up a canvas before the edges dried. Meian never dated an artist before, but he wanted to now.
Comfort came after driving a few circles. Eventually you found yourself on a strip of road that extended far out. Meian remained laid back, eyes closed. He never fell asleep and instead listened to you sing along to songs that played on the radio (which was turned on after the third circle seeing as you were deemed ‘good ’nuff’ for the minor distraction).
You occasionally chit chatted about this and that. You learned that he was an athlete – like your last date. He learned that you’re supporting yourself alone. Your parents didn’t exactly vibe with you being an artist and skipping university all together. You didn’t tell him you had a date with Shoyo, though. Just like he didn’t tell you that he was part of a professional team with Shoyo.
He felt comfortable. You felt comfortable. That’s when three things happened.
1.       You passed a 15 mph speed limit sign.
2.       You saw that you were going 65 mph.
3.       You felt Meian rest a warm palm on your thigh.
Now, in quite literally any other context, that would be a pleasant boyfriend-like thing to do. He was simply acting his part’. Surely, he did the same thing with other clients. However. That combined with the other two made your heart, lungs, and soul try to jump out of your corporeal form and into the next dimension.
First gear. First gear! First gear!
Whipping it into first, the car decided you were the bourgeoisie and it was the working class. It straight revolted, a loud clattering was accompanied by you scrambling around in a panic. Meian sprang up, but his torso was snapped back by the seatbelt’s safety. He unbuckled (like a moron) and kicked your foot out of the way from its spot to press and pull both available breaks.
You sat in silence, hands over your mouth and eyes wide. A choir of ‘oh shit’ sang in your mind, commemorating your funeral with their harmony.
It took some shuffling, but Meian went back to driver’s side. You stood next to the car by the shoulder of the road. A burning smell tickled your nose. Your date came out, hands on his hips and lips pursed to the side. Coming to you, he sighed, “Transmission or clutch went awol. Damn thing won’t start back up. Nothin’s leakin’.”
You sucked your lips in and resisted the urge to scream. Throwing up was one thing. Breaking a rental car was an entirely different one. You bowed, “Meian, I am so so sorry. I should’ve been paying attention and I-I-“
“Woah, woah, girlie, calm yourself. Don’t need’ta do any of this shit,” He bent at the waist, peering at your squinting eyes. His hand rested at the curve of your shoulder into your neck, thumb stroking calmly at the spots you had tapped at before he picked you up. The effort brought near immediate relief, but anxiety made you wonder if he was masking his anger for the sake of his job. When he smiled, you knew it was genuine, “I’m damn near 30. This isn’t even the most expensive car I’ve had this happen to. Don’t worry about a thing, pups. ‘Sides, I shoulda been watching you closer. Blame the teacher, not the student.”
The words were like warm lavender winds brushing away your damp and dead leaves. You offered to pay for the expenses, not daring to mention how it would clear out your savings. Meian waved a hand, “Nah. I got it. I make more than enough to cover this plus some.”
“Then why are you a rental boy-“
“-Help me push it, will ya?” He interrupted, not wanting to admit that it was because of a bet with his troublesome teammate.
You tried to put the car into neutral as per his instructions the best you could, jogging to the back to join him in pushing. You had to admit, the view of his arms working and him pushing a vehicle was a sight to behold.
All the two of you did was push it to the side of the road, so no cars could hit it. You leaned on the rail protecting traffic from tipping off into the waters below while Meian called the company to explain what happened.
When he hung up, he went to put the phone in his pocket, but the sight of you stopped him. You sat on the rail, facing the ocean at sunset. The cardigan you wore slid just below your shoulders and the cool breeze tousled locks so gracefully. A ghosting feeling went through his fingers as they yearned to be the wind. He snapped a photo in landscape mode.
You turned, brushing hair back around your ear and smiled to him. He snapped another photo and you gestured to him to the spot next to you. He did, leaning his forearms on the cold metal, “Hope ya don’t mind.”
“That you took photos? I mean… I thought it was against the rules. Just ahh…. Hm. Send them to me through the app? Can you do that?”
“Think so, yeah. You looked good. Cold, but good,” The words were said as the photos were sent. You saved them with a bashful thanks.
“Since the date’s almost up, my friend’s coming to get me. Will you be okay?” You glanced down to him, leaning forward as you added pressure to the bar at your toes, keeping you from falling.
“I’ll be just fine. Gotta wait for a tow,” He paused and moved to wrap his arms around your waist and pull you to lean into him, “Makin’ me anxious leanin’ like that.” His husky laugh was whisked with ocean breeze. You followed, reveling in the warmth. He liked that you were comfortable enough to accept the gesture. It’s what boyfriends did, right? Even if they weren’t real. Even if reality settled wrong in his stomach.
“The ocean’s so pretty,” You’ve always admired how the waves soaked up the sun’s colors. Oil paintings you’ve made throughout your life a testament to that love.
Meian glanced at you, then the horizon, “Yeah, but I’ve seen better.”
“If I rent you again, take me to ‘better’,” You giggled, missing the look in his eyes and the meaning of his words. Your phone rang, “Oh! That’s my friend, they’re here now - across the street!” Head tilted back, you looked up to him, “Thank you for teaching me how to drive and I really am sorry about the car. I wish I knew how to help.”
“Not a problem, pups. Rate me good. That’s help enough.”
His arms felt empty when you left them.
He checked his phone and saw that once the time struck, the contact was erased automatically. Meian sighed, scrolling through the next few clients he had lined up - his last few dates, he decided. With good tips, he still had a good shot at the win, anyway.
Tumblr media
“How’d this one go hot stuff? No throwing up?” There was nonchalant concern in the question.
You sat back heavily, “No throwing up. I learned how to drive stick shift, though. Then broke the car..”
“You didn’t have to pay for that, right? Those cars are outrageously expensive, ‘specially from those rental places.”
“No, he said he made enough to cover it, weirdly enough.”
“Huh. Well that’s nice of him.,” You friend commented, “Wonder what he does.”
“Me too,” You thought about Shoyo and the up-scale restaurants he took you to, “Me too.”

“Wait, didn’t he offer you a jacket? That was the whole purpose of the shorts! What a dick!”

Lady Fair
Darcy Lewis was more than a little nervous for her first day working as Tony Stark’s assistant. She had only met Mr. Stark two weeks ago for the interview and it had gone terribly, or so she thought, and then she had been hired. Maybe Thor had influenced his hiring decision or maybe Tony Stark just wasn’t thinking so clearly without Pepper there to assist him anymore. No one was thinking clearly after Thanos...Darcy only hoped she didn’t mess this up. This job was the only hope she had of getting her life back together.
Darcy parked her car at the big parking lot next to the complex, shouldered her gypsy style oversized purse, and made her way to the double doors. She swiped her security badge, entered the code that she had written on a post-it note, and entered the building. Her instructions said to take the elevator to the third floor and look for the room marked 3-C. She stepped off the elevator, passed 3-A then 3-B. She could see 3-C ahead when a noise further down the hall got her attention. Darcy followed the sound to an open doorway and found herself on a balcony overlooking a gymnasium. Below her, several of the Avengers were training. She watched them for a few minutes and then turned and went back to the room that was to be her office.
The office was sparsely decorated. She tossed her purse into and empty desk drawer, plunked down into the wheeled chair which she spun in a circle a few times before turning her attention to the DVDs on the desk marked, “New Hire Orientation Packet.” With a sigh, Darcy put the first disc into the player.
By lunch time, Darcy slipped out to watch the Avengers train yet again.
“Darcy Lewis!” Thor caught sight of her a called out. “I was not aware you would be here today! Come down and I will introduce you to my friends!”
She found a set of stairs to her left and soon crossed to where Thor stood. It was good to see him again. It was good to see someone familiar, and safe. The past few months had been anything but safe and that had nothing to do with Thanos and everything to do with Ian. After everything she had suffered in childhood Darcy had always had a weakness for men who would “rescue” her. Ian had not been what he seemed, not once he got drunk. Taking a job in another state had been the simplest way to leave him but she hadn’t officially broken it off yet. She’d been too afraid he would show up at her door drunk when she did. The anxiety of knowing what was coming had been following her for three days since she moved out. Now, as she approached Thor, she felt safe for the first time in months.
“Darcy this is, Steve Rogers, Nebula, Rocket, Bruce Banner, Natasha...Darcy used to work with Jane Foster. Now she works for Tony,” he told them after he had listed off their names. Then he turned to Darcy. “I thought you would not arrive until next week. It is good to see you here today.”
“I wasn’t gonna be here until next week,” Darcy admitted. She had done everything she could to get there sooner, or rather to get away from home. “But I made some calls and Mr. Stark let me come early.”
“Well I am glad he did. It is good to see you,” Thor said, placing a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s good to see you too,” Darcy leaned into his touch just slightly and had to force herself not to start crying. “You changed your hair. It’s a good look.”
“Are you moving into the complex?” Natasha asked her. “Or are you commuting?”
“I’m moving in. I have a few bags in my car and the rest of my stuff is getting sent at the end of the week.”
“Then let us assist you with carrying in your bags,” Thor offered. It was not a request.
“Thor she’s gotta eat lunch,” Nat protested. “We can help her with her bags this evening.”
“Or I can order lunch while you guys grab the bags,” Bruce offered.
Darcy led the way out to her car, followed by Thor. He could manage her four bags easily enough. She reached her car and realized she had forgotten something. “Shit. I don’t have my keys. They’re back inside at my desk.”
“Then I will go get them for you,” Thor said.
He took only one step away before Darcy grabbed his arm. “Wait!”
Thor stopped moving and looked down at her with concern and curiosity. “You seem on edge,” he commented. “Is everything alright or do you have something to fear?”
“I don’t really know,” she said. She was on edge every moment wondering when Ian was going to realize she had left for good and knowing there was a very good chance he would take up stalking her. He fit the profile anyway. Then she looked down at her hand and realized she still had a tight grip on Thor’s arm. She made herself let go. “I’ll go with you to get the keys.” She headed in the direction of the facility entrance but Thor didn’t follow her.
“Darcy?” he called after her.
She stopped walking but didn’t turn to face him for fear that if she did she’d just fall apart. She wished she had a bag of skittles about then. A candy rush might be enough to get through the next few hours without a meltdown. Thor approached her and stood at her side. He reached over to her arm and pushed aside her long bell sleeve revealing a bruise she had been careful to keep hidden, apparently not careful enough.
“Who gave you this bruise?”
“My boyfriend,” Darcy admitted.
“You have left him behind and you fear he is searching for you?” Thor asked, understanding her situation more quickly than she had expected.
Darcy nodded again, this time unable to stop a few tears from escaping.
“If he finds you, he will not harm you,” Thor said firmly.
Darcy let out a sob and then impulsively she turned and threw her arms around Thor, hugging him tightly. He quickly got over his shock and hugged her in return. She didn’t really cry. Darcy wasn’t one for tears very often. Life had been too hard for too many years for her to be bothered with crying. But she did hold on tightly. Thor could protect her but more than that, he wouldn’t hurt her. Not ever. He couldn’t have been worthy of the hammer of he had been that kind of person. The fact was that for the first time since she was eight, she was hugging someone who truly wouldn’t harm her. It made her unwilling to let go anytime soon. It wasn’t that she was attracted to Thor. Sure, he was hot, but she had set aside her crush on him when Jane started dating him. No this was something more basic, a need for a protective family that she’d never had before. Or maybe it didn’t hurt that he was hot. She couldn’t be sure. She only knew that they needed to go back inside and get her keys, and she just couldn’t let go.
“Darcy?” Thor spoke up after what must have been three minutes.
She shook her head, still holding onto him. “Nope. I think this breaks the record on the longest safe hugs I’ve ever had. Can’t let go now.” She rattled off the words.
“Safe hugs? Are there other kinds?” Thor asked, a little confused.
“Sure there are. There are hugs from your creepy stepfather who only wants to hug you because he’s a pervert. And hugs from your real father only when your mom is watching just so he can prove he’s not a deadbeat. And hugs from three boyfriends as an apology for beating the shit out of you.” Darcy told him more than she’d meant to but she couldn’t help it.
She felt Thor sigh on hearing her words and his arms tightened around her a little more firmly. “Then stay a while longer. I have plenty of time.”
Darcy only stayed another minute and then she made herself pull away from Thor and return to her office for her keys. They went back to her car and carried her bags to her new apartment within the complex.
“Yours is right across the hall from mine,” Thor pointed out as she unlocked the door.
“Are you gonna be one of those neighbors I can like borrow baking ingredients from because I always forget to buy stuff?” Darcy asked him as she dropped the smallest of her bags, the only one she had carried, into a nearby recliner.
“You may borrow from me whatever you wish if I have it.” Thor offered generously. “If there is something I should keep a supply of…”
“I don’t actually do that much baking. The only supplies I need are stuff like gummy bears and skittles.” Darcy said, leading the way back out of her apartment to join the others in the lunch room. They had almost reached the others when Darcy stopped once more to say something to Thor. “If you could...not say anything about what I said about Ian and hugs…” she began.
“I will not speak of it,” Thor told her.

The knock on her door at well past 11PM startled Darcy. She put aside her pint of ice cream and went to the door. Thor stood on the other side.
“Your light was on. I brought you this,” he held up packages of gummy bears and skittles.
“Wow,” Darcy said. “The god of thunder is bringing me gifts now?”
“Even gods can use a few friends. Besides, you know I am only an alien and not truly a deity.”
“I know...you wanna come in? I’m just watching My Fair Lady for the fiftieth time..”
Thor entered a little hesitantly and then joined her on the sofa, surprising her by taking the seat in the center so he was sitting next to her. Darcy couldn’t say that she minded that. “I am not familiar with this, My Fair Lady. Is it an important movie that you’ve watched it forty-nine times?”
“I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it really. Only that it was a lot. It’s probably not that important to most people but it is a classic. I just happen to like it a lot.”
As the film wore on, Darcy leaned a little closer to Thor, letting her head rest on his shoulder. Some part of her hoped that he would put an arm around her. He didn’t. Even so, it was enough to sit as they were.
“Why did Eliza return to Higgins in the end? It seemed he was rather harsh with her while he taught her,” Thor said as the film came to an end. “Or what I mean to say is, why do you like this film?”
“You think I like men who are controlling?” Darcy asked, a little defensively.
“I did not say that,” Thor replied.
Darcy sighed, “You didn’t have to. It’s probably true. It’s not like I do it on purpose though. But it’s like Eliza. She cared for Higgins because he offered her new possibilities. She got to wear fancy dresses and not have people look down on her anymore. She got to dance at the most beautiful parties. People can say that’s shallow but a life of poverty with a dad who would sell her out is pretty crappy too. Higgins was an upgrade. Maybe I just look for guys who have something better to offer.”
Thor remained silent for a short while and Darcy was afraid it was going to start getting awkward.
“I am sorry Darcy, that I frightened you on the day I arrived on earth. I frightened you enough that you felt you needed to use your taser on me. I had not realized the significance of that until now.”
“And what exactly is the significance?” Darcy wasn’t sure what he was trying to say.
“Only that you have not been treated with the kindness you deserve and I did nothing to help you when I could have.”
“I don’t...I don’t know that there’s anything you could have done…” Darcy said.
“I might have at least checked in on you when I was with the Avengers these past few years. You were Jane’s closest friend and it never occured to me that you could be in danger.”
“If I was in danger it was my own fault because I make stupid decisions,” Darcy said bitterly.
Thor turned towards her just slightly. “Darcy, you bear none of the blame for what others have done to you. None. The fault is theirs alone.”
“Thanks,” she said in a near whisper. “Maybe I needed to hear that...and maybe if it’s not too much trouble I’ll need to hear it again sometime.”
“Then I will tell it to you again and if you wish it, I will offer you a hug from time to time.”
“Yeah…” Darcy said, emotion in her tone. “I wish for that.”
He moved his arm so that he could put it around her and she leaned closer and rested her head against his chest. The hour was already late enough that she might have fallen asleep alone but this time Darcy was more than thankful that she didn’t have to. Thor stayed where he was and let her sleep in his hug.

Genre: angst, fluff, SMUT
Pairing: Jun x Reader / Chan x Reader
Word Count: 7.3k
Summary: You love them both and you’re torn. But…what if you didn’t have to choose? Jun was scrolling through hotel listings on Jeju Island. He’d decided to surprise you with a trip to Jeju Island. What better way to prove himself to you than to spoil you a little bit? As the holidays came and went, February was here before he knew it. It was the perfect time to go on a trip. And he knew that you could use a little rest and relaxation.
Jun bought two plane tickets that night, as the prices went down a bit. He was excited to spend some time away and alone with you. You’d forgiven him but he knew that he was still sort of on your shit list. If something else went wrong, he wasn’t sure what you’d do. After all the two of you had been through with Malai and the arguing with Chan and all, things had been a little rocky.
He’d spend the next couple of days planning the trip, deciding some fun things to do while you were there. He wanted things to be perfect and he had all these ideas. He wanted to take you to see all the sites—the waterfalls, the beaches, all the beautiful things nature had to offer. You’d forget about all the stress of being at home and just enjoy the vacation with him.
As he scrolled through hotel listings, you called him. “Hello?”
“Hey, babe,” you said. “What are you doing?”
“I’m just on the computer browsing. You?”
“I just got out of the shower...”
“Oh really? What are you wearing?”
“Nothing,” you said. “Wanna see?”
He smirked. “I can’t say no to that.” A moment later, he got a notification on his phone that you’d sent him a photo. You were nude, laying on your towel. You took the picture in the mirror above your dresser, across from your bed. “Wow. You look amazing, baby. I can’t wait to get my hands on you…”
He spent almost an hour on the phone with you and in that time, he found the perfect hotel. It wasn’t a huge suite like he would’ve wanted but it had a king sized bed, a loveseat, desk, and a huge flat screen tv. Not to mention the beautiful view. And even though it wasn’t summertime, it had a really nice pool outside. Luckily though, there was an indoor pool and a spa that you could take advantage of. He’d definitely book a couples’ massage with you, so you could both get all those knots of tension out of your systems.
Jun was getting excited just thinking of all the fun you could have together. Lately, there hadn’t been much to look forward to so this trip was just what he needed. He was pumped to spend some time with you and get you all to himself. It had been a long time since he’d been on vacation and you hadn’t been on one either. So, he was more than happy to solve that problem.
*
As Jun went up the train station escalator, he could hardly contain his excitement. Everyone had a long weekend due to the Korean New Year. Jun was glad because he planned to tell you the surprise today. The two of you had planned to have dinner together tonight and it gave him the perfect opportunity to tell you about his surprise.
You were waiting for him in the lobby of the building you worked in when he walked in. He figured that you must’ve gotten off a little early. As he walked toward you, you didn’t see him. He smiled at the sight of you in the lounge chair, smiling at whatever you were looking at on your phone.
“Hi beautiful,” he said, taking you by surprise. “Did you get out a little early?”
You smiled, grabbing your bag and standing up to greet him. “Hey babe. Yeah, honestly everyone was ready to have a head start to this weekend. Everyone practically ran out of the office once our boss said we could leave.”
He kissed you on your forehead. “Nice.”
The two of you walked out of the building together, starting toward the restaurant that you wanted to go to nearby. On the walk there, you told him about your day and how the restaurant had really good steak and that it comes out perfect every time. He loved how animated you got when you spoke and how your eyes lit up with excitement.
You arrived at the restaurant a few minutes later and were seated right away. It was more crowded than it would usually be on a Thursday evening because it was more like a Friday evening since everyone would be off of work tomorrow.
“I come here with my coworkers sometimes for their lunch special,” you said, flipping through the menu.
Your order was taken and you had your drinks within five minutes. Over the red wine, Jun said, “I have a surprise for you, babe.”
Your eyes lit up again, turning from your drink. “What is it?”
“We’re going to Jeju tomorrow morning,” he said. “I wanted to take you on a trip since we have off.”
“Wow,” you said, smiling even wider, “that sounds amazing. Are you serious?”
“Believe it, baby,” he said, reaching for your hand.
You looked down at the table for a few seconds before you said, “I have an idea, but it’s kind of crazy.”
“How crazy?”
“Well do you think that we could ever spend time together? Like the three of us?”
Jun nodded. “Well, yeah.”
“Well, what if he came with us?”
“Tomorrow?”
“Yeah,” you said. You cleared your throat. “I mean, we can wait another time if you want, of course...but I just wanted to put the idea out there. It could be good for us.”
To be honest, Jun wanted this trip to just be for the two of you, without Chan tagging along. The last thing he wanted was for you to think he had a problem with this arrangement or that he was being greedy. Even though he didn’t want to, he said, “Yeah, that’s fine with me,” because he didn’t want you to be disappointed. The reality was that his reply was the furthest thing from the truth.
And it brought a smile to your face. “I’ll be right back. I’m gonna give him a call and see if he can still get a flight. Can you forward me the flight info?”
He pursed his lips together as he went into his email and forwarded the flight itinerary to you. With a quick “Thanks, babe,” you were gone. You went into the hallway outside of the bathrooms and took out your phone.
“Hello?” Chan answered.
“Hey,” you said, “I have good news and bad news.”
“Okay, what’s the bad news?”
“I don’t think we’re going to be able to have our sleepover this weekend…”
“Why not?”
“I’m going to Jeju with Jun this weekend and I wanted to know if you wanted to...come with us.”
Chan paused for a moment; you didn’t blame him. The three of you had been through a lot in this relationship and you wondered if it was too soon to be together like this. Finally, he said, “That sounds like fun...”
“Do you really think you two can be in the same room together...with me?”
“I don’t see why not. I mean, it’s bound to happen eventually, right?”
You gave him the flight number and, thankfully, he was able to book the flight. And from the looks of it, he was a couple rows behind where you and Jun would be sitting.
“I’m all booked,” he said, after checking and re-checking the reservation. He chuckled. “I should get packing.”
*
Chan heard a knock at the door, interrupting him from his packing. It was Jason, who had arrived with a box of pizza. He sighed and went back over to his luggage. Confused, Jason sat down on the floor, putting the pizza on the table.
“What’s with you?” he said. He pointed to the luggage. “Are you going somewhere?”
“To Jeju,” Chan replied.
“Ooh that sounds like fun. I wish I was going somewhere. My family is right here in Seoul so there’s not really anywhere to go.”
“There’s only but so much fun I can have,” he said, rolling his eyes, as he threw socks into his suitcase. “Jun booked a trip for them this weekend and Y/N invited me along but it feels like it was more pity than anything else…”
Jason cursed under his breath as he opened the pizza box. “Maybe he wants to make peace. Maybe this is him putting his foot forward and trying to make things better.”
“On my weekend? The bastard had the nerve to book this trip when I was supposed to spend the weekend with Y/N! He would do something like this! He had her to himself last week!”
He kicked the suitcase out of frustration, startling his friend. Just when things seemed like they were looking up, Jun just had to do something to sabotage what they had.
“Well, Y/N will be there. She won’t let him get carried away.”
Chan sighed and sat down, grabbing a slice of pizza. “I don’t know, maybe I should’ve thought this over more. It feels like I’m third wheeling with my own girlfriend.”
Chan loved the idea of going on a trip with you. Since he was always busy with work and school, he rarely had enough time for the two of you to have a weekend getaway. But, for once, he was free all weekend and the cafe was closed for the holiday. And even better, his boss still paid him for the days he had off. He’d dubbed it a “New Year’s gift.” For once, things had been aligned so perfectly that it was hard to believe. And he planned on spending it with you since it was, in fact, his weekend to spend with you.
But now the plans had been rearranged. You called him asking if he wanted to go and he didn’t want to disappoint you, so he agreed to the plan before thinking it through. Would it be a good time? He was struggling to trust Jun in the first place; he wouldn’t be able to keep his cool if he hurt you again. On the other hand, it was something that would have to happen sooner or later. In this polyamorous relationship, the three of you would eventually have to come together sometime. It couldn’t always be separate relationships that were somehow still one.
“Is she usually fair though? Does it seem like she favors him over you?”
“I’m not sure,” he said, mouth full. He swallowed and added, “I just gotta make it until Sunday. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?”
Chan sure as hell hoped so.
*
The three of you arrived at the airport a little sooner than expected. You checked in your bags and went through security with no issues. You arrived at the designated gate with an hour to spare. Chan sat down, leaning against his neck pillow. He looked tired; he’d mentioned how he stayed up a bit late trying to finish one of his assignments so that he wouldn’t have to stress about it on Sunday before classes started back up again on Monday.
You went to the bathroom briefly and, when you came back, Chan was fast asleep. You smiled at the sight of him and the fact that his mouth was slightly ajar.
Jun chuckled and said, “He passed out right away. Do you wanna get something to eat since we have time?”
You nodded and went to shake Chan. “Babe, do you want to eat?” Chan opened his eyes ever so slightly before groaning and turning his head away from you.
Jun said, “Just leave him. He’s pretty tired, isn’t he? We can just get a sandwich for him or something.” You nodded, figuring that you should probably let him catch up on his sleep. It was early and you’d get to Jeju a little after one o’clock. If the three of you were going to do anything fun, he’d need to save his energy.
As you walked to the toast stall you passed earlier, you said, “So what did you have planned for us?”
“Well, I was thinking today since we’re getting there a little later, we could take it easy and explore the city a little. There was a teahouse I wanted to visit. Then we can relax a little and get dinner together. How does that sound?”
“It sounds good...and thank you for planning all of this.”
“Anything for you,” he said.
You arrived at the toast stall and ordered toast for the three of you. Jun was surprised that you knew exactly what he would want and Chan, too. He loved that about you—you paid close attention to details. Even when he thought you weren’t listening or paying attention, you were. He loved you so much and he wished that this trip could be for just the two of you, but he also remembered that he signed up for this. He was the one that agreed to this and, while he had the right to change his mind, he didn’t want to lose you. He figured that this was better than nothing and he wanted to keep you in his life in whatever way he could.
When you got back to the gate, Chan was awake and playing a game on his phone. He smiled upon seeing you walking toward him.
“We got breakfast,” you said, handing him his bag. “Toast with extra egg.”
He smiled. “You’re amazing, you know that...”
“I would’ve ordered you extra egg, too,” mumbled Jun as he sat down in his seat next to you.
The three of you just laughed. You were grateful. Maybe things were looking up for the relationship. There wasn’t as much tension between Jun and Chan today. You didn’t know if it was because they’d both matured a lot within the last couple weeks or if it was just because it was early in the morning. Either way, you were grateful and you hoped that the rest of the trip would go this smoothly.
Before you knew it, it was time to board. As the three of you inched along in the aisle, Jun turned to you and said, “Okay. Row twenty-one is right there.”
You said, “Why don’t you and Chan sit together? You could get to know each other a little better. I don’t mind sitting by myself. I can just sit where Chan was going to sit.”
Jun started, “B-”
Chan smiled. “Yeah, we should get to know each other better.”
Jun wasn’t thrilled to be sitting next to Chan on the flight but thankfully it was only for about an hour. But over the course of the hour, things weren’t bad. There would probably always be at least a little tension between the two of them, since the relationship started out in a strange way. But things were actually okay.
Chan carried the conversation, at first. He asked Jun about the kinds of music he liked and then they talked about their families and some childhood memories and Chan told him about his life growing up in Jeju on a tangerine farm. Jun was almost surprised at how down to earth he was. He wasn’t snobby or any of the things that he’d assumed about him. He almost felt bad for thinking those things about him. The reality was that Chan was a good guy and he could see why you liked him in the first place.
Chan said, “I told my mom that I was coming for the weekend. I was thinking that maybe tomorrow, if we have time, we could have dinner with my family.”
Jun nodded. “By chance, do they know...about us?”
Chan paused. To be honest, he’d only told his friends about the true relationship they were in. Of course, he’d told his parents that you were back together with him but he hadn’t told them that you were also dating Jun. How could he tell his parents something like that? They definitely wouldn’t approve and he had no idea how complicated it would be for them to understand something that was so complicated in itself.
“Not exactly,” he answered.
Jun knew what that meant before Chan needed to explain further. Jun knew that he wouldn’t be able to go to have dinner with Chan’s family as your boyfriend. In this situation, Chan would be your boyfriend and Jun would be stuck playing the role of a friend, whether it was your friend or Chan’s. Either way, it was like playing pretend.
Jun had no right to feel upset by it because he was in the same predicament with his own family. They knew that you’d hit a rough patch and got back together, but they had no idea that you’d picked up an additional partner on the way back to each other. He hadn’t even told his older sister despite the fact that they were pretty close.
Was this something to be ashamed of? Would this be something that could ever be accepted? Even though no one was exactly lying, there was a lot of information being withheld. Jun had no idea how the three of you could keep this up. For how much longer, realistically, could you keep it up?
*
You pushed open the hotel room door, exhausted from the walk you’d gone on. You got to see the surrounding areas near your hotel and went to the teahouse that Jun wanted to go to, trying and even buying some of the teas. And Chan showed you some of the places he liked to go as a kid. And you had some street foods and tried fresh grilled mackerel, which Jun enjoyed so much he got seconds. It had been a while since Chan had been able to come to Jeju and he had never gone with you before; you had broken up with him before he had the chance to bring you to his hometown. You watched him as his eyes lit up, picking up memories from his childhood.
So far, you liked Jeju a lot and the scenery was so beautiful and you got a lot of pictures. From what you could tell, Jun had a good time too. And he took a bunch of pictures with his new camera. And your boyfriends were also cordial in taking separate pictures with you, too. And then you asked a kind stranger to take pictures of the three of you, together.
“I’m exhausted,” Jun said, plopping down on the couch.
“That was fun,” you said, putting down your purse. “Thanks for showing us around, Chan.”
“Of course,” he said.
“I made a reservation at the steakhouse for seven. We have about two and a half hours until then,” he said.
You nodded. “Yeah, we can just hang out around here for a while.”
Chan said, “I could use a warm cup of tea,” poking around the kitchenette. There were two packets of instant coffee and two tea bags, clearly not enough for the three of you. “Actually, I’ll go to the cafe downstairs. Y/N? Jun? Do you want something?”
Jun said, “Can you get me a matcha latte?”
You said, “Me too.”
Chan nodded and grabbed a key card. “Be back in a couple minutes.”
As Jun heard the door shut, he was relieved. Finally, he’d have a moment alone with you. You smiled before he had a chance to say anything and you sat next to him on the couch before he had a chance to call you over. He sat up, pulling you into his arms. You snuggled into his shoulder. You said, “Thank you for planning this trip. I can’t wait to get cute for dinner.”
“You always look cute, my love. Which dress did you bring?”
“I got this long sleeved black one,” you said. “I’d gotten it awhile ago but didn’t have a chance to wear it.”
“I’m sure you’ll look great,” he said, planting a kiss on your lips.
You stood up. “I’m gonna go to the bathroom…”
A few minutes later, Chan returned with the drinks. Jun was fast asleep on the couch, his legs sprawled out and his mouth slightly open. He heard water running in the bathroom and assumed that you were in there. He set Jun’s drink on the coffee table next to the couch, assuming he’d probably wake up in a few minutes.
When you came out, Chan was sitting on the bed sipping on his tea. You sat next to him and he handed you your drink. “Thanks, baby.”
“No problem. Jun must be really tired, huh?”
You rested your head on Chan’s shoulder with a yawn. “Yeah. The first day of vacation always seems to be the hardest.” You glanced up at him. “Are you okay?”
He looked down at you, meeting your eyes. “Of course. I’m here with you.”
*
Jun’s eyes fluttered open about a half hour later. The room was darker than he remembered and as he glanced over to the window. The setting sun peeked through, shining on you and Chan asleep in the bed together. His heart dropped at the sight and jealousy pumped through his veins.
He looked at the matcha latte, grabbing it and taking a sip. He was so annoyed he didn’t know what to do. What he really wanted to do was go over there, drag Chan out of the bed and possibly punch him in his stupid face. But this was his own fault. He had opened the door that allowed him to come on this trip with you anyway. He should’ve put his foot down when he had the chance. He’d just wanted the trip to be for the two of you and he didn’t have a problem with Chan doing the same in the future.
Was this selfish of him? Was this something he’d have to deal with for the duration of this relationship? Would the pangs of jealousy and frustration go away?
Matcha latte in hand, he decided to take a walk so that he could calm down a little. He knew that his anger and frustration would only boil over and spill into the relationship. The last thing he wanted was to upset you and especially not on a trip that was supposed to be relaxing for everyone. Although Jun felt anything but relaxed so far.
He went outside and started walking around aimlessly, no clear destination in sight. He just needed some air. He needed some time to himself, just to take a few deep breaths.
Eventually, he started feeling more and more anxious as he walked back toward the hotel a few minutes later. His mind raced with irrational thoughts of the two of you in bed together. What if you were having sex right now, making a mess on the bed that the three of you were supposed to share tonight.
He took out his phone, hoping that Taesik was free to talk for a few minutes. The phone rang four times before he answered. “Hello?”
“Hey, how’s day one of vacation?”
“He’s all over her! How am I third wheeling on a trip that I planned?”
“Who are you more upset at, Jun?”
Jun sucked his teeth. He didn’t need his friend on the other end of the phone call being reasonable. He let out a sigh. “I don’t know...I just know that they fell asleep in the bed and her head is on his shoulder and he’s holding her hand.”
“I dunno what to say,” said Taesik. “Maybe this was a bad idea…”
Deep down, Jun knew that the three of you had issues that you hadn’t resolved. Jun knew there were issues but he couldn’t pinpoint the exact problems. He wasn’t a professional and neither were you or Chan. The three of you were just struggling through the whole thing. Should you invest in couples’ counseling? Was this normal? Jun hated this concept; he had no idea what was right and what was wrong. Was it normal to feel jealousy in a polyamorous relationship?
“Yeah,” he said, “maybe we’re not ready for this…” He heard the phone beep on the other end. Pulling his phone away from his ear, he saw that you were calling him. “She’s calling me…”
“Answer her,” said Taesik. “Call me if you need to vent. I hope everything goes okay tonight.”
“Thanks,” he replied. “Talk to you later.”
He clicked over to the other line, answering your call. “Baby, where’d you go?”
“I just got bored and came outside to watch the sunset,” he lied.
“Come back,” you said. “We should start getting ready. Chan is still asleep, so I’ll shower first.”
Jun said, “Okay, I’ll see you in a minute,” and the call was over. He headed upstairs to the hotel room, bracing himself and taking deep breaths to calm himself down. There was no reason for him to be angry. He had agreed to this arrangement, after all. He was in a relationship with you but so was Chan. And they needed to find a way to deal with it all.
When he got back, he heard the sink water running. Glancing over at the bed, he saw Chan was still asleep. He knocked on the door and you opened it, still dressed. You hadn’t gotten in the shower yet; he caught you just as you were washing your face. Finally, even if it was in the bathroom, he could have a moment alone with you. He stood behind you as you pat your face dry with the towel.
“How was your walk?”
Jun nodded, wrapping his hands around your waist. “It was good. I’m better now that I’m back here with you,” he said, kissing your neck. “Mind if I join you in the shower?”
You raised your eyebrows at the suggestion and it also made you excited. “Yeah, why not?”
Jun watched as you peeled your clothes off slowly, teasing him. He’d be lying if he said his dick wasn’t throbbing in his pants at the sight of you. Taking off his own clothes, he never took his eyes off of you. And when you were completely bare before him, he pulled you closer to him and kissed you, hard. Your tongue found his, your naked bodies pressed together against the glass of the shower door.
“I love you,” Jun mumbled against your lips.
“I love you, too,” you answered, planting one last kiss on his lips. You followed Jun into the shower and you didn’t hesitate to start washing him up first. You took care to be gentle with him, turning him on. His lips parted as you massaged his balls and he let out a groan as your hand went up and down his shaft. Now, he was completely hard and his dick was throbbing with desire to bend you over and pound your pussy until you were screaming for more.
He cursed under his breath as he got under the water and you helped him rinse the soap off of his body. He kissed you again and, as he did, he reached down to your clit. It caught you by surprise, making you gasp. He rubbed it harder and your lips parted with a moan.
“Quiet, baby,” he whispered. “You don’t want to wake Chan up, do you?” He spun you around so that you were facing away from him, reaching down to rub your clit from the front. With his left hand he covered your mouth and with his right, he rubbed your clit. Jun enjoyed fucking around in the shower, even on a regular day. He loved seeing your wet body and how your pussy would end up like a river, your wetness flowing out and onto his fingers.
He kept going and you squeezed your legs together as if you were trying to escape. Jun chuckled. “Don’t you want to come, baby?” With that, you parted your legs again, letting the pleasure take over. He felt the vibrations of your moans on his palm, but he held it there anyway. It turned him on to feel you struggling. He took your clit between his thumb and pointer finger, giving it a few light squeezes that drove you crazy. After, he dragged his fingers down your slit. Already, you were so wet. And he knew that it didn’t take you long to come like this.
He could feel you struggling, against his fingers. Your body was starting to twitch and he knew you were dangerously close to your orgasm.
“Come for me, Y/N,” Jun whispered in your ear.
Hearing his voice in your ear is what did it for you. You couldn’t take it anymore. You let go, trembling, shivering, and coming all over his fingers. And once you came down from your high, he kissed you once more.
*
“Are you almost ready to go?” Chan asked. His stomach was growling and you’d been prancing around the hotel room in your bra and underwear, scrambling to finish getting ready for the past ten minutes.
“I’m sorry,” you said, stepping into your dress. “My makeup didn’t come out like I expected...Can you zip me?” Chan nodded as you walked over toward him. He zipped you up quickly, hoping that this was the last thing you had to do before the three of you headed to dinner. Thankfully Jun had pushed the reservation to 7:45 rather than 7:30 because of the chance you might be late.
“Okay, I’m ready,” you said, placing your hands on Jun’s shoulders as he sat on the couch.
“Okay,” Jun said. “Let’s call a cab.”
Within fifteen minutes you arrived at the restaurant. Luckily, it wasn’t too far away from the hotel. Jun had chosen a nice restaurant because he wanted to treat you to a special dinner. Of course, he had to change the reservation to three people instead. And he’d be sharing dinner with not only you but with Chan too.
You entered the restaurant and your party was seated right away, in a booth. Thankfully it was one of those curved ones so that you didn’t have to choose who to sit next to or for the three of you to squeeze on one side. You sat in the middle, with a boyfriend at either side of you.
“This place is pretty nice,” said Jun, taking off his coat. “I know you don’t like restaurants that are too fancy, so this is a good in between.”
“Yeah,” you said. “This is perfect. I’m paying, by the way.”
“No,” Chan said. “You shouldn’t be the one to pay. I should pay, since there was this last minute change.”
Jun rolled his eyes when no one was looking. Jun had planned on paying and here Chan was being a goody-two shoes. He found himself becoming annoyed, even though he had been trying so hard not to act like this. While you were getting dressed earlier, he tried to push down feelings of jealousy as you walked back and forth from your suitcase to the bathroom half dressed. He tried not to feel jealous because obviously both he and Chan had seen you naked and both he and Chan had sex with you; everything was just separate.
Jun tried to push down those feelings of jealousy as he looked at the menu for the next few minutes. The waiter came and took everyone’s order. He said, “Wine, anyone?”
“Sure,” Jun answered. “What wines go well with steak?”
Jun was definitely going to need some alcohol in his system if he was going to get through the night without losing his cool. He didn’t mind Chan, in general, but he’d like him much better if he was back in Seoul instead of here with them.
For the most part, dinner went smoothly. The three of you had some pretty good conversation. Things between Jun and Chan weren’t explosive; neither men took petty jabs at each other and the three of you were able to laugh together. If anything, they were the ones poking fun at you, revealing a few of your embarrassing moments.
Jun chuckled. “Oh my god, did Y/N ever tell you about the first time she got blackout drunk?”
“No,” Chan said, “what happened?”
Jun cleared his throat. “She was at the karaoke bar getting drinks with Na-Ri and their other friends and she asked me to come get her. So, I get there and order more drinks. Next thing I know, we’re leaving and she fell into some garbage bags outside the bar. And when I got her back up again, she fell back down into them.”
As the guys started laughing again, you said, “Stop! That was so embarrassing. Everyone stopped to look and you know what the worst part of it was? There were police officers on duty and they walked by and they laughed! They fucking laughed at me! Can you believe that?”
And both Jun and Chan erupted into laughter. Jun picked up his wine glass, finishing what was left. He’d been the one to finish most of the wine, leaving little for you and Chan. He said, “Oh, did I finish most of it? Should I order another?”
You put your finger on your chin. “Actually...we should go out after this.”
Chan looked up, chewing on a piece of steak. “Where to?”
“I saw some bars a few doors down. Why don’t we check it out?”
In an ideal world, Chan wouldn’t be here. In an ideal world, it’d just be you and Jun. And in an ideal world Jun would go out with you to the bars knowing that he’d be taking you back to the hotel so that you could make love all night and fall asleep in each others’ arms. But that couldn’t happen tonight and it was frustrating. It’s not that his main goal was to have sex with you but having the option taken from him sucked. He just wanted some privacy and alone time with his girlfriend. But with Chan here, it was impossible and he’d just have to make the best of it. His goal was just for you to be happy and to enjoy yourself.
*
This lounge had a chill vibe. It was a little more upscale than the others in the area but, surprisingly, it wasn’t too crowded considering it was a Friday night. The three of you sat in a booth, complete with velvet couches and a menu perfectly aligned in the center of the table. You picked up the menu, wondering what their drinks were like.
“What are you thinking of getting babe?” asked Chan, looking at the menu with you.
Jun rolled his eyes. “I’m gonna go to the bathroom.”
You nodded. “Want me to order you something?”
As Jun slid out of the booth, he said, “Yeah. You know what I like.” And with a wink, he was gone. Within five minutes, the drinks were ordered and Jun had come back to the table looking a little stressed out. You noticed because you knew him. There was something bothering him and you were just noticing. You felt a little guilty for not noticing sooner that is, if he’d been feeling stressed out earlier.
As the waiter placed your drinks on the table, you turned to Jun. “You okay?”
He gave you a nod as you slid him his drink. “Of course.”
A few sips into their drinks, you turned to Chan. “So did you talk to your mom?”
Chan nodded. “Yeah. I told her that I’m here and that I’m staying until Monday since I don’t have class.”
“I want to see her,” you said. “It’s been awhile.”
Chan cleared his throat. “I know. I thought about it and I’m not sure it’s a good idea if the three of us are together…It’s kind of complicated since they don’t know about Jun...”
You pouted, the realization setting in. “Oh…okay. I guess you’re right...”
Chan knew you were disappointed because you hadn’t seen his parents in awhile. He knew they’d be happy to see you and vice versa. Chan looked over at Jun, who seemed more concerned with his drink than the conversation the three of you were supposed to be having right now. Chan was annoyed. He was trying to be considerate of Jun’s feelings, since he was the one who brought up that their families don’t know the nature of the relationship they were in. He was the one who brought it up in the first place and he wasn’t even paying attention. And even worse, Chan was the only one who seemed to notice. Of course, he had no problem with bringing his girlfriend to meet his parents. But he didn’t want to make Jun uncomfortable.
“Jun,” called Chan.
Jun looked up from his drink. “Hm?”
“Y/N seems to really wanna meet my parents. Do you think we could maybe meet them at a restaurant? That way we won’t have to stay for too long…”
Jun wasn’t happy about it. If he was being honest, he wanted to suggest that he take her to dinner and for him to stay at the hotel. He didn’t want to meet Chan’s family as a friend. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be and it wasn’t fair that he had to suffer on his own vacation.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “I guess that wouldn’t hurt.” He grit his teeth and tried to convince himself that this was normal. He knew that, at the end of the day, it would be the same if the roles were reversed. If it was Jun’s family here, the scenario would be the same. Chan wouldn’t be able to come in as your boyfriend either.
But you were smiling. You were happy and Jun supposed that that was more important.
“Okay,” said Chan. “I’ll call them in the morning.”
You turned, looking toward the dance floor. It was mostly empty; You saw one group dancing together. There was hip hop music playing and it was one of your favorite songs. Your body wanted to move. “Let’s dance.” As you scooted off of your seat, you looked at Jun expectantly.
“I’ll join in a minute. I’m just gonna finish this,” he said, pointing to the rest of his drink. In all honesty, Jun was frustrated. To be honest, he didn’t want to be here and he certainly wasn’t in the mood to dance. He watched you dance with Chan and you weren’t even dancing with him in a sexual or suggestive way. You weren’t grinding on him or anything like that but he still felt jealousy coursing through his veins. These feelings seemed unreasonable. Jun had been in this arrangement with you for a couple months now. He knew how things were supposed to be. So why was it that he still felt this ridiculous jealousy, still? Why was it that he couldn’t accept this relationship with you and with Chan?
With a sigh, he finished your drink in one gulp. But he needed more, especially to deal with the feelings and doubts that crossed his mind. He walked over to the bar, taking a seat at the bar.
“What can I get for you?” asked the female bartender.
“Something strong,” he replied. “How about whiskey? On the rocks.”
She smiled and a moment or two later, returned with his drink. A few sips in, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Jun turned and was faced with the person that he wanted to see the least. The alcohol was starting to hit him now and he was beginning to care less and less. He rolled his eyes and he didn’t care if Chan saw him. And Chan did see but decided to be the bigger person and brush it off.
What pissed him off is that Chan approached him with raised, concerned eyebrows. Glancing back over to the dance floor and table, you were nowhere in sight. He assumed that you must’ve gone to the bathroom.
“What’s up with you?”
Jun shrugged his shoulders, indifferent to Chan’s concern. “What does it look like? I’m having a drink, like everyone else here.” He took another sip. From Chan’s point of view, it seemed more like a gulp than anything else.
Chan looked back at the table and glanced at you. “Why don’t you come drink it at the table...with us? Y/N’s in the bathroom but she’ll be back in a second.”
Jun sighed, swirling the ice around in his glass. “I’m just having a good time over here. I’m enjoying the vibes and the scenery. I can’t even do that?”
Chan looked at the now empty glass Jun had in his hand. He scoffed as Jun ordered another. “Never mind…”
“Do you have a problem with me?”
“No,” said Chan. “If you weren’t in the mood to dance, I get it. But I don’t understand why you left the table to come over here and down a whole drink in two minutes...”
“It’s been a while since I’ve had a good glass of whiskey. You should try it. Don’t be so uptight.”
With that, Jun placed his new glass in Chan’s hands. “Here, have some.” Jun cleared his throat. “Can I ask you something?”
Chan raised his eyebrows, curious at the direction the conversation was going.“What?”
“Don’t you get jealous?”
“Sometimes...but I try not to let it get the best of me.”
Jun pouted. “You’re her favorite.”
Chan couldn’t believe his ears. Was Jun serious? Was he actually saying these words in all seriousness? “Are you fucking kidding, Junhee? She literally left me for you. What we had was perfect and she left me and went running back to you! Did you forget about that or do you have a selective memory? You're the favorite here!”
Jun pouted. “It just seems like she always gravitates to you...”
“All night she’s been checking on you and wondering if you’re okay. In fact, I haven’t even been able to enjoy myself tonight because she’s been so concerned about you and your shitty mood!”
“She would do the same for you because that’s how she is…”
Chan ignored him. “Why are you so insecure? Can't you see that she's been concerned about you this whole time?”
“I wanted to take this trip and make it special just for the two of us and you just had to come and mess it all up!”
“Stop yelling.”
“I’m not yelling!”
“Well you’re clearly upset with me. Honestly, if you wanted your own time why did you let me come? Why lie to her and act like you're okay with me showing up if that's not true? Were you just trying to make her happy?” he asked.
“Of course I was trying to make her happy. I’m always trying to make her happy…”
“And you thought you’d make her happy by lying to her and leading her on? Looks like you’re doing a great job.” Chan couldn’t help but to let out a deep sigh. “You know, I thought you agreed to this because you thought it would be good for the three of us. I thought you were finally coming to accept things and make this work. I thought we were finally getting somewhere. But now I see I was wrong...”
Chan would be lying if he said he wasn’t hurt. He thought that maybe he and Jun could be friends. He thought that after the plane ride and the conversation they’d had that they’d finally be able to get along, not only for your sake but because they genuinely wanted to. But it was becoming more and more clear that Chan was dreaming and he needed to wake up from this dream.
Wake up, Yuchan...

[superbat hs au - Court of Owls, First hints of ~superpowers~
Tommy was willing to fill the time a while until supper, when about ten minutes before six, the boy on the top bunk would finally sit himself up and slide down to the floor and tugging on shoes without much of a word. “Almost six. Get ready to go.”
--
“Uh-”
Clark had asked him if he had any family, and what he planned to go to college for, and other generic questions he could manage to think of while he unpacked his things and then shoved his empty luggage aside.
“Six?” He asked, like he hadn’t heard any of what Harvey said before.
--
“Dinner,” Bruce said as explanation, unbothered.
(“Unfortunately, my mom,” Tommy had said with a roll of his eyes. “And obviously, Bruce’s an orphan. I’m hoping for medical school, to be a surgeon. What about you?”
There was no moment to acknowledge the middle part of the sentence. Only an impossible-to-hear tightness in the boy in the bunk’s otherwise steady breathing. And then it was gone again.)
“They’ll want you to wear something nice for the opening dinner, and any dinner on Sundays. If you don’t have anything else, your school uniform will do,” Bruce said.
--
(“Wh- journalism.” Clark had replied, but didn’t dare ask about how Bruce was an orphan.)
“Oh, okay. Uh. Yeah. I’ll have to get changed then.” Clark said, and dug around for his uniform. He didn’t have anything nicer than that with him.
He walked out to head to the bathroom and change.
--
“Alright.”
They would wait for him to return.
When he did, it was clear Tommy had changed clothing too, though he hadn’t bothered to leave the room to do so. He sat with Bruce on their bottom bunk, dressed in a matching oxford and button down jacket. Dark pants, black shoes. They could’ve been siblings, probably, despite their personalities.
And once all three were there, off they went, Bruce dutifully leading the way to the cafeteria, and Tommy trailing a bit behind him, content to just follow along for the moment.
“Sundays and special dinners we gotta eat with our hall table,” Tommy said. “And listen to the headmaster give speeches. But other than that, school’s pretty great.”
--
Clark followed along behind them. The closer they got the louder things got, and he could tell this was going to be rough. Places that were loud even for regular people were killer on him. It was so hard to focus on what you were supposed to.
“You like school?” He asked, sounding a little in disbelief.
--
“Uh, yeah?” he said. “Get some time away from the family? Live with my best friend? School rocks.”
He slung an arm around Bruce, and it was accepted with a huff.
“Not everyone’s as good at school work as you,” Bruce said.
“You are, though,” Tommy said. “So you don’t get to point that out to me.”
He poked Bruce’s cheek. The quiet boy smiled a little.
--
Clark didn’t say much. He felt like a third wheel, and the black-haired kid really wasn’t much of a talker. Couldn’t blame him if he really was an orphan.
The dinner was… boring. But hey, free food. The headmaster talked about the upcoming year and how they were all going to grow into strapping young, disciplined men and yadda yadda. Clark didn’t really pay attention.
When dinner was over it was back to the room. Back to bed.
… He had a hard time sleeping. Gotham at night was still so damn loud compared to back home.
--
Gotham was loud.
So were the dorms.
(someone, somewhere in the building, was crying into their pillow. Trying to muffle it, but the dissonance--
Multiple people were. Quiet, muffled, hiding it--)
In His Room.
In his room, the first night, a heart started to rocket up in pace from where it had once been steady, panic--
Bruce on the top bunk jerked awake, with the sound of his teeth biting through his lip to keep quiet.
--
Sometimes Clark didn’t realize what was supposed to be loud to normal people and what wasn’t.
“... You okay?” He whispered out into the dark.
--
The boy flinched.
….rolled over to face Clark, breathing still shallow.
He flinched again at whatever he saw.
“...fine,” he said. Then, “Quiet.”
--
His eyes were still bright in the dark, but only when they caught the light.
“... Okay.” He said, and wouldn’t say anything else.
He wouldn’t get much sleep.
--
It was something Clark couldn’t hear, but Bruce’s mind wouldn’t quiet anymore than Gotham or the dormitory would.
“...what’s with your eyes?” he whispered.
--
Oh damn. Oh shit.
He quickly closed them and rolled over so he faced away from the other bunk.
“Nothing.”
--
There was a disbelieving huff from the other side of the room.
...unfortunately, Clark wasn’t the only light sleeper.
“...mmh?” Tommy mumbled, splayed out on the bottom bunk. “What’s goin ‘rong?”
--
“Nothin’.” Clark said again, and didn’t turn around.
They had sent him here to get away from everyone knowing what he could do. He couldn’t blow his cover on the first night because his STUPID EYES GLOWED IN THE DARK.
--
“His eyes were glowing,” Bruce said. Because of course he did. No wonder Tommy called him a snitch--
But Tommy started making noise into his pillow, too.
Laughing. Trying to muffle it.
“Were you dreaming about the Talon?” he hissed, sounding delighted.
--
Ignore it. Let this blow over.
“What’s that?” He mumbled, still looking away.
--
Above Clark, Harvey Dent let out a groan under his breath.
Apparently, everyone was awake tonight.
If Tommy’s eyes could’ve glinted in the dark, they would’ve. “Oh, that’s right…. You’re from Kansas. You don’t know about… the assassins….”
“Oh my god,” Harvey Dent whispered only to himself.
--
… Clark finally lifted his head and glanced back at the other bunk.
“What.”
--
“It’s a fairy tale in the area,” Harvey said finally, whispering loud enough for the other two in the room to know he was also a little snitch. “Tommy likes to scare new kids with it. Now shut up, we’re gonna get in trouble.”
Tommy flopped back onto his bed, huffing. “It’s fun to watch them freak out. It’s not like anything bad actually happens by just talking about it.”
“You got a quote for that?” Bruce mumbled, half audible in his pillow.
“Ugh. ‘Happiness depends on ourselves?’ Or in this case, in letting me tell a ghost story in the middle of the night, you babies.”
--
“Fairytale assassins?” Clark couldn’t help but snort and roll back over so no one could see his eyes.
“Guess you city kids gotta have some kinda boogiemen.”
--
…..
Tommy sat up in bed, eyes narrowing.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
--
“Well back home we got things like portals to hell and angry ghosts, not assassins.”
--
...somehow, that seemed to settle Tommy, a little.
“No room for that stuff here,” he said. “Just threatening nursery rhymes that date back definitely two hundred years and if you want it creepier, even longer.”
--
“... Assassins with nursery rhymes?”
Sounds pretty lame.
--
“Still spooks people enough,” Tommy said, shrugging. “Especially in this kinda place.”
“It’s nice to think some random murders might’ve had a point,” Bruce said.
Tommy did not respond to that.
--
“Dunno how anyone could get spooked in a place as loud as this.” Clark said, sighing.
No room to think enough to be scared.
--
….for a moment, the three regarded him in incomprehension.
“Oh,” Harvey said. “Oh, he’s not used to the city.”
There was a small sound of understanding from the other two.
“I was gonna say. It’s dead quiet, honestly,” said Tommy.
“Not if we get caught talking,” Bruce warned. “Shh.”
“Shhhhhh,” Tommy said.
--
Clark groaned his own ‘nnnngh’ and shoved the pillow over his head.
It didn’t help.
Somewhere out of normal hearing a car alarm went off.
“You gotta be kidding…” He whispered to himself.
--
At least, finally, the conversation, thin as it was, had died out.
(There wasn’t any explanation for why Tommy would think Bruce dreamed of Talons when it was just a silly boogey man.)
But the three boys settled down in their beds again.
Bruce started breathing deeper. More intentionally. Until it relaxed him enough to get back to sleep.
...his heartbeat deepened and steadied out. Much closer than the car alarm.
Tommy and Harvey’s followed.
[...]
He wrote to his parents.
Everything is going well. Making friends. They're all rich but not as full of themselves as I thought they would be. It's pretty cool. Really loud here though. Having a lot of trouble sleeping.
Love you.
Then it was just… back to normal. Like he hadn't found out the teachers beat their students.
--
(When his mother wrote back, she was so relieved he was making friends. That it wasn't as bad as she feared.
But he wouldn't get that letter for another two weeks.)
The next week rolled around, and Bruce grew a little quieter. Tommy didn't, but Harvey quietly told Clark to be extra careful this week. It was an anniversary, he said, assuming that by now Clark knew, Kansas or not. And sometimes Bruce got a little mean during the anniversary.
Not just standoffish, but.
A little aggressive? Sometimes.
...and so the 26th rolled over, and even though Tommy seemed to be pretending it was a normal day, the rest of their dorm room woke up with stale, held breath.
Bruce avoided people. Avoided radios and TVs playing the news.
But somehow, he didn't manage to avoid the newspaper, and did a double take when he saw the headlines.
Finally, something had overshadowed him a little.
On the front page was the picture of a grisly murder. Open-eyes, holes in his face--
“REAL ESTATE SUPERSTAR FOUND DEAD IN PENTHOUSE SUITE; DEATH OF A THOUSAND CUTS!”
--
Clark tried to keep it in mind. Unlike the other two he didn’t treat it like any other day because it wasn’t. They still all went through the motions of course, but he talked to Bruce a little softer. A little gentler. Not because he wanted to walk on eggshells, but because he knew for Bruce that this wasn’t just another normal day, and acting like it was felt like almost a slap in the face of what he had to go through.
Maybe it hadn’t occurred to him that Bruce would want to avoid the papers. It was hard for him to wrap around the fact one of his roommates was so rich that his parent’s death made it into the news every single year somehow, so maybe it was his fault that Bruce saw the headline. He read the paper almost every day if he could. He wanted to be a journalist, after all, and they didn’t have TV in their room. Sometimes the common room TV wasn’t even on.
But he saw the murder too and, at this point, didn’t think much of it. Read the article and moved on.
Gotham, he had learned very quickly, was just as bad as everyone said.
--
It made sense, why Gotham Academy reassured all their parents that they would keep the children safe.
And maybe that was Bruce’s fault, he thought. Because it wasn't as if he was expecting papers to talk all over again like the day it'd been, but--
He'd expected a talk piece. An opinion article.

He could imagine what the headline should've been. What it should've been.
Instead, Six Years of Sorrow: Wayne Murders Still Shadow Upper East Side and Wayne Murder Theater Announces Close on Anniversary of Deaths, citing ‘Unrecoverable Reputation’ of the Area had been pushed down the page to make room for the new murder.
...and Bruce took a look at it and snatched it up to stare at the grisly photo and start to read.
--
It was a good thing that Clark had a loose grip on it as it was yanked from his hands.
“O-kay. You coulda asked.” He said, but didn’t sound angry. Still being soft around Bruce due to the day it was.
He feared he might’ve done something wrong.
--
Bruce managed to give him a hum of some sort of acknowledgment, but didn't really give much of a response.
He went to his bag, grabbed a pen, and sat right down on the floor, tracing the bottom of the words in the paper to keep his place.
Tommy leaned out from his bunk to try and watch over Bruce's shoulder, but his eyes looked uninterested. “Saw somethin’ ya liked?”
(Bruce shot him a disgusted look, a “what?” but otherwise ignored him.)
--
Clark leaned over too in order to watch him. “Or somethin’ ya didn’t like.”
--
Bruce glanced up at him, too, but looked more self-conscious than anything at that.
“The way they're talking about the thing just reminds me of the claw marks they found at the Lansing murders…”
“Oh my god,” Tommy said in a familiar kind of disbelief for this specific topic. “It was a dog claw, Bruce.”
--
Clark, however, was interested.
“Lansing murders?”
--
Bruce shrank down under Tommy’s criticism, but… looked up again, and quietly answered Clark’s tone.
“...the Lansings were a business couple,” he said. “They were murdered in their home the summer before last by stabbing a, so not… like this.”
For a moment, he backed up again, and let Clark see the slashes of the man on the page.
“Something left a big claw mark on the door, and their dog--”
“Ran away from home and wasn't seen again,” Tommy said dully. “It obviously hit the front door. Broke the hinges. Ran off in fear. It was a hundred pound dog.”
“...” the look on Bruce’s face said he didn't believe it all the way.
But he didn't lift his head to argue this time. He just stared down at the paper.
“...Bruce, hey, I'm not trying to make fun of you, I'd never do that,” Tommy said, rolling a little closer to the edge of the bed. “But just because claw marks happened once or twice at a murder doesn't mean the Court is real. What, did your dad have a gash on his face when he died?”
And Bruce shook his head.
“See? It's not real.”
--
“Well that don't mean you can't look into it.” Clark offered, looking up at them. “What's the harm in connecting a few dots? And just because there ain't proof they do exist doesn't mean they don't.”
--
Tommy gave Clark the kind of flat look he never gave Bruce. Like he was saying the dumbest thing.
“You didn't even know the story when you showed up and now you're trying to do this? Really?”
...Bruce stared up at Clark, face unreadable.
And he started to pick up the newspaper and fold it again.
--
“Tryin’ to do what?” Clark frowned. “If there's a story here I'm interested! Y'know--” he gestured to himself, “journalism?”
--
“To drag him down again!” Tommy said, rolling off then bed and standing, defensive behind Bruce. Above him.
For the moment.
For the moment before Bruce stood, pencils and notebook in hand, and paper carefully folded under his arm.
He looked at Clark.
“Let's go.”
--
Clark glared at Tommy, but he said nothing.
He grabbed his own notebook and pencils to leave with Bruce.
--
“Bruce?” Tommy said, but Harvey was the only one still listening. “Bruce!”
Bruce closed the dorm door behind him.
“Library has old papers on record,” Bruce said softly. And he began to walk.
--
Whatever history was repeating here, Clark knew nothing of it.
“Okay,” he said, and started heading that way.
“... Tommy said I was ‘dragging you down again’. What’d he mean by that?”
He sounded annoyed. Offended. Like he would do that to someone intentionally.
--
Bruce pursed his lips, buying time for a response, but not sure what to say. Or, he knew what to say.
But he didn't like to say it.
“...I tried to find the man who killed my parents,” he said finally. “...I couldn't.”
--
“You think they’re all related to that Court?”
--
Bruce hung his head.
Stared at the ground.
Didn't… want to look Clark in the eye when he admitted his stupid, idiot theory.
“...they’re all building developers. Or owned lots of property. And were trying to change it…”
--
But Clark didn’t call it stupid.
“Okay, something to start with. And, hey--”
He reached out slowly to touch Bruce’s shoulder.
“Worst case scenario is we’re wrong and nothing changes.”
--
Bruce twitched a little at the contact, but…
Mostly, he just turned his head up a little, and stared at Clark’s face.
(He was sixteen and he'd stopped believing in a just world long ago.
But somehow, he was stupid, and still believed in fairy tales.)
“Okay,” he said, voice cracking.
And he led Clark to the library.
...the newspapers were all in the bottom floor, the basement. In the archives. The indexes were massive, but well organized and maintained.
And Bruce already knew where to start looking… to a point.
But the first place to start, was writing down a scrawled poem on a blank sheet of scrap paper. Hesitating.
“...we’re doing this backwards,” he mumbled. “Not supposed to go in with a theory…”
But he wrote it out, all the same.
Beware The Court of Owls, that watches all the time,
ruling Gotham from a shadow perch, behind granite and lime.
They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed,
speak not a whispered word of them or they'll send The Talon for your head.
--
Clark followed him down.
“No?” He asked, setting his notebook on a desk close to the archives they would need to look through.
“How do you think we should go about it then?”
--
Bruce swallowed and stuffed the paper in his pocket.
“...supposed to go in and look for patterns and connections,” he said. “...if you already have a suspect, you… only look for things that point to them.”
--
“... Okay. How much can you tell me about this ‘Court of Owls’?”
He was sitting down and opening his notebook to a new page. He didn’t have the knowledge of them Bruce did. This wasn’t his home. These weren’t his urban legends.
--
Looking for them directly was exactly what Bruce said they shouldn't be doing, but…
It still thrummed inside him, on some silly, stupid level.
Maybe it hadn't just been a coincidence murder. Maybe it had a purpose. Anything other than random events. Anything.
“...” he handed Clark the paper. “...they have at least one assassin. They… Have an architecture motif. They're watching from the buildings.”
With the kind of architecture in Gotham Academy not being uncommon to the rest of Old Gotham, it maybe wasn't surprising the buildings themselves were the boogeymen’s hiding places sometimes.
But he didn't know if Clark would make that connection to a real estate building mongle--
--
“Ties in to your theory about them targeting building developers.” He said, writing something down before he got up so he could look into those Lansing murders Bruce had talked about earlier.
He needed to play catch-up. This wasn’t his turf. He didn’t know as much as Bruce did.
He planned to dig up the papers about the Wayne tragedy too, but… not now. Not with Bruce in the room.
Clark could do that later on his own time.
--
Tommy had seen the connection, and rolled his eyes, and Bruce half expected Clark to just-- not see it at all--
But he swallowed something down, and his stomach stopped roiling quite so much, and he nodded again.
“Yeah. Just. Anyone who changes the architecture.”
And he dove in behind Clark.
He looked for the more recent murders. The ones he hasn't read about or studied like this since he was twelve and finally gave up, run off from his last scraps of energy.
And finally, someone was beside him, willing, even for just a moment, to believe him.
--
While Bruce looked at the more recent murders, Clark went for the old. The ones Bruce already knew about. He asked him which ones he had connected before, if any, and he would take a look at those.
(“I’m a new perspective. I wanna go over things you already know about. We don’t think the same, so who knows. Maybe I’ll see something different.” Is what he would say.)
The Lansing murders. What they did before the murders. The other ones that Bruce had tied together when he was 12--
Before they knew it the library was closing. They would need to come back.
And they would.
--
(A new perspective. A new reading level, honestly-- from twelve to sixteen, the change in things he understood--)
They would come back.
Absolutely.
Bruce went to bed and slept the whole night, and woke with impatient fire in his eyes.
Tommy gave Clark a sour look as Clark headed out the door to change, and once again as Bruce flew out of his last class, tossing his bag into their dorm and making a beeline to the library.
“Bruce, but, homework--!” Tommy called.
“Don't bother,” Harvey sighed, sitting down with his own book bag to get started “It’s not like his grades will get him kicked out.”
….and on the weekend, Tommy barely had time to pull on a matching hoodie and jeans, before Bruce was out the door for early breakfast and back to work.
(“Nice to see him care about something,” Harvey said.
Tommy threw a pillow at his head.)

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
“Go away, Levi!” Mammon shouted, rolling over onto his side and shoving his head under his pillow. He hadn’t been able to get any rest since he had seen Levi a few hours ago, and now it was late at night and he was irritable and exhausted.
“It’s me.”
Mammon whipped around in his bed, eyes glued on the door. Why were you here? Had Levi talked to you? Were you coming to dump him? Did he even want to see you? Or should he ask you to leave? His heart was beating rapidly in his chest, and he couldn’t have answered you even if he knew what to say.
Not hearing a response, you slowly opened Mammon’s door and poked your head inside the room. Mammon had rolled back over by now, pretending to ignore you, despite the fact he was intently listening to your every move as you approached. You sat down on the edge of his bed, resting a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey, we need to talk.”
“...dunno what we have to talk about.”
“Why you sent Levi to talk to me, for starters,” you replied, gently rubbing his shoulder with your thumb.
“It’s what you wanted isn’t it? Permission to date ‘im? Well ya got it, so I dunno why you’re here,” he grumbled as he pulled his blanket tighter around his body.
“Because I love you,” you replied with a sigh. You had assumed Mammon was going to be a handful, he was never one to apologize first no matter how badly he may have wanted to. You were expecting that. You needed to soften him up, make sure he felt safe, and only then would he be willing to talk. But expecting it and dealing with it were entirely two different things, and you did not have unlimited patience.
“Sure, whatever...”
“Mammon, you’re being ridiculous. Of course I love you. That’s why we fought. If I didn’t, I would have just dumped you.” You let out another deep sigh, this time frustrated with yourself for going off on a slight tangent and snapping at him again. You were trying to get him to open up, and this was surely having the opposite intended effect.
“Look, Mammon. I’m sorry for how I handled things, for avoiding you. I know that wasn’t the best way to handle it. I was just confused and didn’t know what else to do. But I really do love you, and I want to talk with you to see if we can make things work. I don’t want to just give up on you after one fight.”
Mammon didn’t respond right away, but he did lean back into your touch just a little bit, causing a small smile to spread across your face. Looks like you found your soft Mammon.
“My life just wouldn’t be the same without the Great Mammon in it, you know? I’d be pretty bored, I’m sure. Who’d take me shopping? Who’d watch Harrison Porter with me?” you had adjusted your position slightly now, so that your leg closest to Mammon was bent at the knee and resting against his back. You started to run your fingers through his hair, with him melting more and more with each pass through.
“...would ya still have time for that?” he asked, his voice scarcely above a whisper. That was really his biggest fear, if he was being honest. Would you still have time for him? Would you want to make time for him? Or would you just spend more and more time with Levi, Mammon slowly becoming the third wheel?
“Of course I would, babe. I honestly don’t think things will change all that much. You do realize we spend most of our time with him already anyways, right?” you laughed.
Yeah, Mammon knew that. He may not have really thought about it before, but after spending the entirety of his evening scrolling through old Devilgram posts it was pretty hard to ignore.
“But I’ll always make special time for just you. We’d just have to talk things out with Levi to make sure everyone’s happy. I know sharing isn’t your strong suit, but…”
Mammon rolled over slightly so that he could look at you, having detected the waiver in your voice as it trailed off. There were tears gathering in your eyes now, a few already leaking down your face. The sad smile you gave him was all it took to get Mammon to reach out and pull you down towards him into a hug. With your legs now resting over his hip, you wrapped your arms around his middle and buried your face in the crook of his neck. You sighed again, this time out of relief, as you cuddled closer, his arms tightening around you.
“I know,” he replied, “ya look at him with that same dopey grin you give me,” Mammon felt you smile against his neck as he continued, “You don’t give anyone else that look either. So…” he hesitated, squeezing you tight and pressing a kiss to the top of your head, “...’m sorry for what I said. If ya wanna talk to Levi, we can talk to Levi.”
“Really?” you asked, trying to pull back to look Mammon in the eye, but he held you in place, not wanting you to see just how embarrassed he was and how deeply he was blushing. You let out a small laugh when you realized he wasn’t going to be letting you move, and returned the hug, nuzzling against him once more.
“Yeah, just, ya know...you gotta make time for me alright?! I’m still ya first.”
“Of course, I’ll always have time for you.”
Smiling, you kissed the skin on Mammon’s neck, a spot you knew he was sensitive, before trailing kisses up his neck and along his jaw until finally you reached his lips. You gave him a tender, sweet kiss, full of all the love and affection you had been holding onto since you had last spoken with him. When you broke away, you rested your forehead gently against his, brushing his nose with your own.
Mammon smiled to himself, humming quietly in contentment. He had missed cuddling with you like this. It had been less than a week since your fight with him, but that was quite long enough as far as he was concerned. Sharing your time a couple days a week with Levi would be much easier, in comparison. At least when you’d be with Levi, he’d know you would be coming back to him. Last week, he didn’t know if he would have ever got to hold you again.
“I love you,” you whispered, pressing another soft kiss to Mammon’s lips, as you swore to yourself that tonight, you were going to spoil Mammon absolutely rotten so that he knew just how loved and adored he is.

Tanaka Seeing His All-Star Cheerleader GF Compete For The First Time! (Fluff)
———————————
A/N: Thank you for resending this🥺🤍🤍🤍 of COURSE! Let’s go on a trip to the should-have-happened 2020 Cheerleading Worlds:
———————————
“Babe!!! I’m so excited to see you!!!” Your boyfriend exclaimed into the phone. You had to hold the phone a few centimetres away from your ear because his voice was just so loud when he was excited.
“Me too, baby. We are about to start warming up soon. Did you find a spot to sit? You’re not too far back, are you? Because you can buy a pair of binoculars-“
“NO NEED! Second row, baby.”
You gasped, surprised. “What?? But you came a bit late, didn’t you? Those seats would have been taken for hours!”
“Are you questioning the powers of your boyfriend, Y/N?! All we had to do was make our way to the front audience and before you knew it two seats just opened up—“
We. Oh, right.
You remembered that Tanaka had brought his best friend Noya to Florida with him for the Cheerleading Worlds. Being well aware of how your bf and his friend are together , you immediately understood how they were able to find two seats in the front.
“Now I get it. Nishinoya bothered the other girls so much they relocated...” You had seen it first-hand at outdoor concerts with Nishi and Tanaka. Nishinoya has become even more girl crazy since his friend got off the market, he really wanted a girlfriend so he could go on double dates with you two instead of feeling like the perpetual third wheel.
“Huh? What matters is that we got a spot, Y/N!” Called a distant voice that you knew was Noya’s.
You rolled your eyes even though they couldn’t see it.
“Babe, I’m so glad you came, you know that right? Thank you so much!!” Your heart swelled every time you thought about the fact that your man literally booked a surprise trip to Florida from Japan to see you at the biggest competition in your entire life! You found out he was here last night—in a hotel far away because they were all booked up for worlds—But, he was here nonetheless. He didn’t want to shock you at the actual competition in case it altered your mind.
“I told you I’d be there!” He said.
“Yes but I didn’t believe you!! It’s a 15-hour flight!”
“That’s exactly why I brought my Noya with me! We had a blast on the flight. I just can’t wait to see you compete!” Your boyfriend quieted then, and you could hear the smile in voice when he said, “Plus, Noya wanted to be here for [YBF/N aka Your Best Friends Name].”
Noya shouted: ‘shut up, Tanaka!” in the distance and you laughed.
This is the first time that your cheer gym has ever qualified for Worlds and when your team had been given an invitation the lot of you cried for a week straight. Your boyfriend had sent you a singing telegram in celebration. It was hilarious and you loved him for it.
“That silly crush still going strong, huh Yuu?”
There were sounds of bustling in the phone then you heard Yuu loud and clear.
“It’s not silly Y/N. I’ll tell you that for the last time!”
“Tanaka told me you just asked out the hotel receptionist last night!!!”
“Because YBF/N-chan rejects me every day! I gotta make her jealous somehow!”
You heard rustling again and and an ‘Ow!’ from Noya before your boyfriends comforting voice entered the phone speaker again.
“Babe. Don’t let Noya drag you into their drama again. I need you to focus on your cheer comp. You kill it out there. Tell them if they drop you they’re gonna hear from me and blow me a kiss if you can.”
You blushed. You felt so insanely happy every time he encouraged you because he knew you so well and he was the best at it. You literally adored the man.
After speaking a little longer, your loving goodbyes and hanging up, Tanaka left to get snacks for himself and Noya while Noya held their seats
Ryu loved junk food and he loved his girlfriend so today was a perfect day
He knew It was a great idea to surprise you in Florida for the most important day of your life because he wanted you to know that nothing was more special to him than your happiness
On the way to Worlds from the hotel, Tanaka had annoyed Yuu to no end because he had tried to empty out the gift shop in search for an after-competition present for you
Noya swatted everything out of his hands, telling him that you were not on your death bed so the ‘get well soon’ teddybear was a no no & that he’d look lame with it
Not caring but kind of listening, Tanaka settled on picking up a bouquet of yellow roses for you because that was your uniform colour and he got your favourite candy.
Noya rolled his eyes but deep down he was so happy that his best friend had found the greatest love the two of them had ever seen
Seeing Y/N and Tanaka together made Yuu actually want to feel the kind of love his best friend felt for you and stop being such a player.
He had seen how much Tanaka had changed since meeting you, and it was incredible that his high-spirited best friend even had more notches to ascend
After retrieving the snacks, Tanaka returned to the stands and handed Nishinoya’s his order
They watched about 4 other teams perform before the announcer announced your team as next!!!
Tanaka cheered so loudly like a proud father
Nishinoya like a proud uncle
Your team ran on stage and you were holding hands with your best friend while waving to the audience
when you caught sight of your buzz cut baby in the crowd you pointed to him and blew him a big kiss
He pointed to his shirt with a huge smile and you could see that he was wearing a white t-shirt with your face on it in a cheer selfie
Omg lol
Honestly, Did you expect anything less?
Tanaka’s heart soared when you pointed him out, though he would never admit it, and his cheeks were hurting from smiling so wide!!!
He had never seen you perform not once before and he couldn’t wait to see you in your element!
When the lights shut off the libero and wing spiker started chanting your name in unison and whooping like they do while watching NFL.
Tanaka’s heart was beating through his chest because he was so nervous for you! Cheerleading was nothing like volleyball— while his volleyball team had 3 sets and over an hour to win a game, his beautiful girlfriend only had 2 minutes to leave everything on the floor that’s she and her team had been practicing months for and then it was all over.
Ryūnosuke watched as your team got into position.
His eyes glued themselves to you in a dance position to the far right
Since videotaping at the Cheerleading Worlds was strictly prohibited, he had practiced not blinking staring competitions with Noya last night so he wouldn’t miss a second of your performance!
He stood on his toes as to not let you out of his sight. He wanted to see your big ponytail all the way down to your toes. The whole nine yards.
Noya tried standing on the chair but he got hissed at so he jumped back down lol
Tanaka cheered one last time when he saw you take one last deep breath
“Game Time, Y/N! YOU GOT THIS BABE”
In a beat, the up-beat loud music started and you were going.
Tanaka was in awe of you and the incredible sport
Everything went so fast he was sure if he tried he’d have a heart attack from working to hard
He saw you whip your body backwards in series of difficult flips
Tumblr media
He watched you jump into your bases hands and get tossed so high in the air that his heart stopped
Tumblr media
He watched you stand tall in the air with only one guy holding you up while holding your toes beside your ear flexibly (partner stunts)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He watched the team move into a triangle and jump all at once hearing the crowd go:
“Hit! Hit! Hit! Hit! Pull!”
Tumblr media
Then, he watched your team make a human pyramid! But it was so much more elaborate than the 3-person one he’d seen on tv shows:
What Tanaka expected:
Tumblr media
Vs. What Tanaka saw:
Tumblr media
Finally, he got to watch you in his favourite part: the sassy high energy dance at the end
Tumblr media
Tanaka was flabbergasted because he never knew you were so much of an athlete (no offence meant, that’s what most people think before they witness competitive cheerleading)
When your team finished he cheered so loudly for you and so did Nishi
The energy in the crowd was unbelievable!!!
You looked out of breath and beautiful standing in your end position
To Tanaka, Cheerleading looked harder than volleyball!
And more dangerous.
It was like watching a Cirque de Soleil performance if it was on steroids and fast forwarded.....he loved it!!!
Tanaka wanted to run on stage when your team finished but he kept his cool and waited
After the comp and award ceremony (your team didn’t place) Tanaka was the first to run and pick you up into his arms in a big bear hug
He told you how proud he was of you and squeezed you and kissed your cheek
Even though you were sad, you couldn’t help but giggle in his embrace
All of your teammates were jealous of how cute you two were and how amazing your bf was to come all the way to America just to see you
Especially when Noya handed Tanaka who handed you the beautiful yellow roses and candy he bought for you
Everyone wished they had a boyfriend like yours as you took cute pictures together (some with Ryu kissing your cheek, giving you a piggy back, and the two of you kissing)
All pic credits go to Nishinoya who takes it way too seriously but you love him anyway
Tanaka explained to you how awesome you guys did and it literally made you forget about your loss and just smile
It was important you were happy because that meant you could enjoy the rest of the Florida trip with your best boy !!
Even Noya had a pretty great happily ever after on this trip because YBF/N was so impressed by the shirt he made with her face on it.
Go big or go home was definitely your bf’s best friend’s speciality and your best friend actually agreed to go on a date with him after seeing it
Ryu gave his Libero a thumbs up before leaning down to kiss you
He held you lovingly in his strong arms
All in all, you were ecstatic to have your man at your competition and Ryu was even happier than you to be there.

To Tempests, From Whispers
[Prologue: Arrival]
It was early in the morning in Lumiose City as the sun hasn't risen up and a grey cloudy sky loomed over the airport. A Lucario in flannel and baggy pants looks toward the horizon then back at a Meowstic wearing a simple buttoned-up shirt underneath a bright blue hoodie and trousers, they're both smiling as an announcement is heard from the lobby that the flight will start shortly.
"Looks like you gotta go. Are you sure you're gonna be fine, Cipher?" The Lucario asks, addressing the Meowstic in a cheerful fatherly tone.
"I'm gonna be fine, dad. I'll call as soon as I get settled in, alright?" Cipher answers back holding his luggage with his right hand as he looks toward the plane bound for Sinnoh. "I'll remember our training too and- …"
He was interrupted mid-sentence as the Lucario hugged him tightly, holding back tears. "Have a safe trip, son. Promise me you'll do your best?"
Cipher just hugged him back as his voice breaks just a little. "Sure, dad … I gotta go now. Wish me luck." He wiped a little tear from his eye and proceeded to take his flight, as he turned back he saw his father waving back.
"Go get 'em, hero."
~~~
"Hello, Jubilife! Today … a hero will be born."
I breathed a sigh of relief as I went outside of the plane, greeted by the bright sunny day of Jubilife. The flight surprisingly took a few hours from my hometown of Lumiose but I guess they're just doing their jobs as usual.
I had my suitcase in tow as I made my way towards solid ground, it was a large wheeled suitcase that I had a bit of trouble carrying by myself which I didn't really mind. After all, I didn't really come here for just a vacation … I came here to apply to my dream school, the ever prestigious Stella Academy, a place that has honed the skills of the best heroes to have ever lived, from what I've seen at least.
It really took me a while to choose what academy I wanna go to. I could have just attended a simple hero academy back at Kalos but my father insisted I go here, he did graduate here after all and now he is one of the well-known heroes of Kalos. I still remembered what he said to me during one of our training sessions.
"If an aura tells you something, you best be listening to it. It never lies."
I took a measly stroll around the city just to see what I can expect here. After some time, I decided I should probably find an apartment somewhere to settle into. This luggage of mine is already putting a bit of weight on me considering I just been on a plane and I'm still feeling a bit of jetlag. Now that I've mentioned it, I was told there would be someone who's gonna help me settle in here and I have yet to find this 'mon.
Having nothing else to rest on, I just sat on a nearby bench putting my luggage next to me as I figured out where I should be heading next. Of course, I can't just run around the entire city just to find a single 'mon, not to mention this is the first time I've been here.
While I seemed to space out for a bit, I felt someone tap my shoulder. Turning around, I see a Lucario wearing a pastel-colored tank top and a black skirt who seemed to be inspecting me up and down. "Umm … can I help you?" I asked as she responded with a smirk.
"Are you, Cipher by any chance?"
"I … I am. Why do you ask?"
"Ah! Yes, yes … I was expecting someone to arrive here in Jubilife and was tasked to accommodate them." She extended her hand towards me and gave a hearty laugh. "Lucia Ferros. Hope we'll get along quite well!"
I instinctively shook her hand and smiled back, a bit confused and dumbfounded as to why she was here. But I can't really complain … at least I can finally settle down. I let go and stood up from my seat, clutching my luggage with me.
"Pleased to meet you, miss. Now … where to?"
"Ohh right, follow me and we should get started settling you in."
"Okay …" I just followed her as we walked along some apartment buildings and alleyways. I don't see any standalone houses and bungalows which were the type of housing I was used to so living in an apartment would be something new for me.
While we walked, I saw her looking around the buildings and taking a sharp turn as we seemed to come across the entrance to an apartment. She seemed to be leading me towards the backyard when she suddenly stopped walking with her back turned away from me.
"Think fast!"
I was going to question where and why did she take me here when she suddenly threw something at me, what looked like a Bone Club on fire heading straight towards me. Her eyes were glowing blue as her body was now covered in aura. Panicking a bit, I let go of my luggage and readied an attack.
Uh … umm … come on, Cipher … think!
"Energy Shockwave!"
I can feel my ears activate as I let out a pulse of Grass and Psychic energy while I closed my eyes. After seeing whether the attack hit her or not, she suddenly wasn't there in my line of sight. I can, however, sense her presence and it was too late for me to react as I turned around and got knocked back almost instantly.
"Aura Blitz!"
Dammit! Why is she so fast …
"Come on, give me your best shot! We aren't gonna be here all day …" She exclaimed back at me as I was standing my ground and not letting myself get knocked over. I attempted the same attack when she grasped my right arm and raised an eyebrow. "Too predictable … surely you had something else on your sleeve ..."
The grip was surprisingly tight, so tight that I can't even move my arm. This whole ordeal was happening way too fast for me to keep up and I needed a way to counterattack. Luckily, I still have my other arm as I sneakily readied an arm behind my back. Combining my Thunder Wave and Energy Ball, I managed to barely materialize the attack from my hand and sent it out.
"Paralyzing Shock Ball!"
Luckily, Lucia seemed to be taken by surprise as she shuffled back and let go of my arm. "Not bad, not bad … now can you handle this?" She was smirking rather than being annoyed that I hit her with my attack as she activated her aura again but this time her paws seemed to be on fire now.
I just braced myself as I am starting to get a little fatigued from having to manage two attacks while still feeling a bit of jetlag. I opened my ears again as I activated my aura as she dashed toward me still with quite an impressive speed, maintaining my form and getting ready to counter any of her attacks.
"Pyro-Combat Strike!"
I just managed to barely dodge it as the flames grazed through my right cheek, leaving a small burn mark as I grabbed her arm and used a weaker version of my Paralyzing Shock Ball with my free hand. "Still had it charged this whole time …" With that, I brought her down to one knee and I stood back to see if she's gonna attempt another attack again.
"Looks like I've seen enough … we're done! Impromptu training is over for now." She smiled as she strained a little while getting up to her feet. "Sorry about that, I just needed to make sure you were the one trained by Dominus himself."
"Well yeah … I'm his father after all …" I scratched my head and chuckled nervously. Father was a hero back in Kalos but I didn't know his legacy would also be known as far as Jubilife of all places.
Her eyes seemed to light up as I said that and immediately held both of my shoulders in awe. "Wait a minute … you are his father? What an honor! Now I feel really bad that I made you do all that … Ok how about this after we get brunch after I get you settled in? Just to make it up to you …"
I just stood there, blinking in disbelief and a bit dumbfounded. Who knew being the son of a well-known hero would be a big deal? I just came here already and I am already having some adoration. "Please … you don't have to do that …"
"I insist! It's all on me anyways and hey, I want to get to know you a bit more and have a little chat if that's alright with you."
"Alright, if you say so …"
"One more thing … Welcome to Jubilife, I'm sure you're gonna love it here!"
"I sure hope so. Still a little nervous about all of this you know …" I immediately grabbed my luggage which surprisingly wasn't damaged and was just a bit dusty from the battle earlier. "Should we head to an apartment now?"
"Yes, yes of course! I'll lead the way. Come on, let's get you finally settled in."
"Right behind you …"
~~~
"Cipher! Glad to see you've finally settled in over there! I hope Lucia wasn't too much for you…" It seems dad had immediately called back just as I rang his phone. I was just on my living room couch when I decided to call him and it was already afternoon by the time I had just finished setting all of my stuff here.
"No worries about it, dad! She was pretty dynamic but she's alright for the most part." I had just learned from her that she used to do some hero training under dad too to prepare herself in studying at Stella Academy. She is now in her third year and is one of the top students already, no wonder she was darn fast with her attacks…
"I'm glad. I just want to make sure you're in good hands … okay, I should be doing my work. I'm currently en route towards a flash fire and I don't want to slow myself down. Goodbye for now, son!"
He immediately turned off the call just after he said that as I stared blankly at my phone screen just to reign in all of what had just happened today. Entrance exams for the academy are tomorrow and I want to make sure I'm in my best shape for that so I'm going to do some training for the big day ahead.
"Don't you worry, dad. I'll make sure mom's gonna be proud of me too from up above. I’ll promise that…" I left him a voicemail just as Lucia was waving at me by the window to start my training.

The Artificials / A short story
This is a short story I wrote some time ago, but only recently went through and edited.
(5.5k, scifi with just a dash of action and queer feels.)
xx
“I told you I’ll do it.”
A brief smile crosses Colonel Davie’s thin lips. He leans forward, pushes his elbows on the desk, and locks his fingers. “Look at you, Aden. That’s what I like to hear.”
It’s easy for this jackass to smile. He won’t be the one running head on to the enemy, no — he leaves it up to me. An Artificial. The Expendable.
I scoff and turn away. “Sure. I’ll let you know how it goes.”
As I make my way through his office, past the paintings and the maps and the huge collections of enemy helmets just collecting dust in big glass cabinets, Davie clears his throat.
“This time, you’ll have a partner.”
My heart skips over a beat. I reach the door and stop, my brains repeating that last word like a stuck record player.
A partner? For me? But—
Davie laughs. His chair creaks, and heavy footsteps approach me. “It’s someone like you. I’m sure you’ll get along with it just fine.”
I don’t want to turn around but I do, and I meet Davie’s amused gaze.
“Your mission requires two people,” he says, circles his desk, and leans his butt over the edge. He reaches into his chest pocket and pulls out a fat, brown cigar. “Or, well, not people. I wouldn’t risk my soldiers over this. That’s why it’s you two. Even if you die… Well, you know the drill.”
The familiar heat rises in my chest. I tense staring at him, at that smug face, as if he’s so much better than me just because every part of him came out of a womb.
I didn’t ask for this. Any of this. Not to be made, not to be put in this body, not to fight in this stupid war.
“Fuck you.” The words slip out before I can register them. “I’m flesh and blood, the same as you.”
Colonel Davie pulls out a lighter, snaps his finger across the wheel, and lights his cigar. The cocky look on his face never wavers as he exhales a thick cloud of smoke that smells as disgusting as his personality. “Are you?”
Whatever.
“I’ll have someone let you know when I return,” I say, pushing out the door.
“You’ll find your new partner from the armory,” Davie calls out, and I slam the door shut behind myself. His muffled voice yells: “You might find him familiar.”
xx
The guy in front of me is tall, probably half a head taller than I am. The arms that poke from the sleeves of his white tee are muscular, and I guess he’s the type of soldier who lives and breathes gym — and yet, when he looks down at me, he smiles the sweetest smile and offers me his hand. White paint, already dry, decorates the side of his palm.
“Hey,” he says. “Nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot. I’m Kane June.”
With a polite smile, I grab his hand and shake it. “Aden May. Hopefully all things good?”
‘Might find him familiar’? What the hell had Davie meant by that? This guy is a total stranger, and by the lively look in his eyes, he’s never been to a real battle before. He’s definitely never died before. How could I know him?
Kane’s grin widens as he nods. He steps back as we let go of each other’s hands. “Dude, you’re like a legend to us down in the Third Floor. It’s an honor getting to go out with you.”
The choice of words makes me laugh. “Let’s finish this mission first and we’ll see.”
In a blink of an eye, his cheeks go from brown to red, and he falls back another step, lifting his hands up. “Shit, I mean, I don’t—”
“It’s okay, I know what you meant,” I say, still grinning, and turn to the rows of weapons on the wall.
It’s unusually empty here in the armory — but figures, since the previous attack on the base killed more than twenty of us. Out of the five hundred specialists we started with over four years earlier, only seventy-six are still standing.
It won’t be long until we lose.
“So is this your first time out in the field?” I ask, glancing at Kane. He’s busy hiding his face in his hands.
That’s… kind of cute.
He nods, looking up. The blush on his cheeks is almost gone. “I wasn’t supposed to go today, either. I’m not done with my training yet.”
“Why did they make you come, then?” I ask, turning my focus back on the weapons, and swallow a sigh.
A complete beginner on a mission our survival depends on. Davie really outdid himself. Does he want us both to die?
“The attack a few days ago,” Kane says. “They sent everyone out to defend the base. You’re the only Expendable who came back, right?”
I pick a modified pistol from the rack. The faces of the others flash in my head, bleeding and screaming and dying—
A shiver runs down my back and I force the memory out.
No matter. They’ll be reinserted into new bodies and come back. Probably tomorrow or the day after, with eyes that are a little bit deader than before.
“That’s why,” Kane continues. “But you don’t need to worry about me. I was the top of my class. Outdid most the humans in every task. I’m not saying I’m as good as you, or will ever be, ’cause I mean… You’re a legend. But I can handle myself.”
I turn to face Kane, forcing a smile on my lips.
He stands there, such an innocent drive in his dark brown eyes. He doesn’t know anything yet, that much is certain. And after seeing what it’s really like out there, he will wish he had stayed oblivious.
But that’s not why they created us. People like the two of us aren’t here to be happy.
Our bodies are expendable. Even if we die, we’ll never stay that way. Illness, bombing, suicide, it doesn’t matter; our suffering will never end because they’ll always bring us back, again and again, until we finally go crazy and destroy our code from the inside. They force us into living and dying for a world that doesn’t give a shit about artificials like us. It doesn’t matter our bodies, borrowed from the dead soldiers, are flesh and blood; our consciousness is fake, created from lines of code and a bunch of numbers. To them, we are nothing.
“When were you supposed to graduate?” I ask.
“A week from now.”
At least he isn’t a complete beginner.
I hand him the gun. It has an extended clip; God knows he might need the extra ammo. “You know how to use it, right?”
He nods and pushes the gun down the holster on his waist. “Like I said, I can handle myself.”
“We’ll see,” I say, and pause before continuing. “Hey, uh… This is a weird question, but you have any hobbies?”
He laughs, lifting his hand up to the back of his neck. “That’s fine. I mean, yeah, I guess. I like drawing. And painting, though I always make a huge mess. Why?”
“No reason,” I say and turn back to the weapons. “Get ready. We gotta leave the second it gets dark.”
“Aye, aye, captain.” There is a grin in his voice.
Eventually, he’ll lose joy in everything. We all do; it’s only a matter of time until the truth gets to him. That there’s no hope for beings like us.
But right now, he’s innocent. Happy. Full of life.
I smile as I watch him bend over and tie his shoes, but a coldness creeps up my chest. My smile fades.
He won’t stay happy for long.
Nobody does.
xx
“We should wait.”
I lift an eyebrow at Kane. In the blinding darkness, it’s only my night vision lenses allowing me to see him.
He nods towards the open yard between us and the lone warehouse. It’s the size of a garage — inconspicuous by design to hide the fact it shelters some of the most important data known to man. Davie won’t tell me what exactly, because why on earth would an artificial need to know that? But it is the type of information that would help us even the playing field.
Behind the warehouse sits one of the tens of massive wooden barracks. Which enemy they belong to, I don’t know, but that doesn’t matter. What I know is that they’re filled to brim with soldiers, both human and artificial alike, ready to kill us both if things go wrong.
“Doesn’t it seem too convenient to you?” Kane asks. “Where’s the security? All the soldiers? The dogs?”
“You’re saying it’s a trap?” I whisper, eyeing the warehouse.
“Could be,” he says. “I think we should wait and see what happens.”
I check the watch on my wrist; it’s already fifteen to five in the morning. Fifteen minutes until the whole base will wake up. Half an hour until the sun will rise.
And if we go back empty-handed for no good reason, we’ll both get in deep trouble.
If we wait and lose our only chance...
“Stay here. I’ll go get the case,” I say, giving my new partner a look. The words make him tense. “If it turns out to be a trap, head back to base. Let Davie know.”
“But you’ll—”
“Be reinserted,” I interrupt. “They’ve got a ton of bodies ready, and my memory was backed up a few hours ago. I’ll be fine.”
Kane’s lips draw back. He stares at me, his breathing picking up.
“Don’t forget what we are,” I say, keeping my voice stern. “This is what we do. It’s not my first time losing a body.”
“You mean dying.”
“Call it whatever you want. I’ll be back in a few days.”
“But it’s still painful, isn’t it? And you’ll remember it?” His tone borders desperate as he takes me by the wrist. “I really think we should—”
I snatch my arm back.
Kane flinches. His eyes widen on me and his mouth opens, but he doesn’t say a word.
The hurt expression on his face is like a dagger to my gut, but this is the only way, because he’s right. It will hurt and I will remember it, and I don’t want him to go through that.
If he can just hold on to that innocence for a little while longer…
I stand up. “Stay here. That’s an order. If something happens, head straight back to base and tell Colonel Davie. Don’t wait for me or try to help.”
Before Kane can argue, I turn around and jog off, an invisible fist squeezing my insides.
This is why I don’t work with others. To send them to their deaths, to watch them go through that indescribable hell of a slow, painful death, just to meet them again a couple of days later…
Their bodies are always different, but you can always tell who it is by the haunted look in their eyes. The eyes that lose more and more of their sparkle each time they get reinserted.
Kane’s eyes are still alive.
An artificial consciousness or not, he is alive, in body, mind, and spirit alike, and he deserves better than this.
So I cross the yard to the warehouse; dig into my pocket and pull out the little device I can’t understand but can open any electric lock with; push it against the reader by the side of the heavy door and wait for the click.
The door unlocks. I pocket the device and pull it open.
There’s another click—
Shit.
My heart rushes to my throat and I spin around, swinging myself forward just as the bomb goes off. Something heavy hits my back and slams me to the gravel.
For a moment, I can’t breathe. My body is on fire and every single cell inside me screams and trembles as hot waves of pain rush up and down my back.
I’m not sure if I’m screaming, too.
I roll onto my side. The pain flares in my back with the movement and I close my eyes, fighting the nausea rumbling in my gut. I let the back of my head hit the ground. Terror traps my breath and crushes my chest, and I squeeze my eyes shut tighter.
The ringing in my ear subsides and the blaring alarm takes over. A yell rips through the air. Gunshots follow it.
Tears rush down my cheeks. The sobs don’t sound mine as they escape my throat.
“Aden!” Kane screams.
A hand takes me by the cheek. I lift my eyelids just enough to see the blurry outline of his face above mine.
“Aden, come on, get the hell up!”
Why? Why is he here? I told him to—
“I’m not leaving you behind! If you’re going to die here, both of us are going to die here,” he yells over the ringing of the guns and the blaring of the alarm. His eyes are on the enemy. “But I really, really don’t want to die here, so get the hell up!”
I stare at him, unable to get my tongue moving. A warmth spreads in my chest but it, too, hurts, bringing tears to my already blurring eyes.
What an idiot! Risking himself like this, and for what? Me? For a guy who has already died and been reinserted twelve times? A guy whose eyes have been dead for a long time already?
There’s nothing that’ll make me emptier than I already am.
But Kane holds onto me tighter while exchanging bullets with the enemy I can’t be bothered to look at. There is a fire in his eyes, one filled with life and love and longing for something better.
And I remember that look.
The memory makes me pause. It’s from such a long time ago, he’s nothing but a hazy memory — one that I push away as soon as it surfaces.
Doesn’t matter.
Right now, this version of him is here, and everything about him screams a will to live.
I can’t let him lose that.
Especially not for my sake.
“You idiot,” I manage to croak. Blood drips down the side of my head and splashes on the gravel.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” he says, grabbing my arm. “Come on. I’ll carry you.”
xx
“You feeling okay?” Kane asks. My room is barely big enough for a bed and a desk, but somehow, Kane managed to fit a chair by my bed.
I sigh. “Peachy. You know, I might be the first artificial person to ever get dragged back from a battlefield.”
“That’s what I don’t get,” he says. “We’re people too. We should be protected just like the ones without a chip for consciousness.”
The grin that spreads on my lips is involuntary. I close my eyes.
Some day, he’ll know better than to wait for that sort of miracle.
Kane shifts on his chair. “It’s fucked up. Why is it like this? Why can’t we be equals with them?”
“Because they created us,” I say. “People can’t even accept other humans as equal. You really think they’d think lines of code are as valuable as they are? To them, we’re just smart, immortal weapons.”
He huffs. “Maybe right now, but who knows what the future brings?”
I open my mouth to reply when the door to my room clicks and opens. I push myself on my elbows, but a sharp spike of pain makes me grunt and fall back down. I squeeze my eyes shut and lift my hands up to my face as the pain burns me to my core—
“Take it easy,” Kane whispers. He lays a hand on my chest. “Breathe. You’ll be okay.”
The plethora of curses slip past my lips. “Yeah, I’m fucking trying—”
“Have you two forgotten your manners?” Davie’s harsh voice calls from the doorway.
Great.
Kane shoots up to his feet so fast his chair tips over. The clatter echoes around the room. “No, sir. I’m sorry, sir. Welcome,” he says and bows.
“At ease,” Davie says and steps further in. Now, I can see him, too—he’s holding a thin file in hand—and as our eyes meet, he nods. “Aden.”
“What the hell are you doing here? I don’t remember inviting you,” I say. My voice is tense as the pain throbs around my spine, and I can’t give two shits about what this asshole of a human being thinks of me. “Got all your other soldiers killed so you had to come down here yourself?”
Kane shoots me a horrified glance. Most likely, he has never seen an Expendable talk back to a human, especially not a human of as high ranking as Davie, but that’s not my problem.
This is my room, and this dick is the last person I want to see.
“You have always been an exceptional soldier,” Davie says, his eyes narrowing on me. “That is why I’ve let you get away with things nobody else ever would’ve. Your disrespectful attitude, for example. But I am getting very tired of you.”
Well, that’s a threat.
Does he still think he has the power to hurt me? That there is something he can do that would make my existence any more miserable than it already is?
But he’ll never leave if I keep pissing him off, so I sigh and nod. “Sorry.”
Davie doesn’t look satisfied, but he takes a step further in and waves the file in the air. “These are the results of your medical examination. Your injuries are severe, to say the least.”
There is a question in Kane’s eyes as his gaze travels between me and Davie, but he doesn’t ask it out loud.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out his question, though.
What now?
“It is treatable, yes, but even with the best doctors and extensive physical therapy, it would take several months for you to be able to fight again. Years, most likely,” Davie says and tosses the file onto my bed. “See for yourself.”
“No need.” I flash him a sarcastic smile. “I can feel it just fine.”
“Suit yourself,” Davie says. “You know what this means.”
Even a child knows what it means.
Even if they could wait that long for this body to get back in fighting order, they wouldn’t waste such precious resources on an Expendable. Even our bodies are from the fallen soldiers, for hell’s sake; because we are not important enough to waste precious metals on. Why would they waste time and medicine on us when there are plenty of usable corpses coming in every single week; when they can simply kill the body and transfer us?
“I’ll contact the lab,” Davie says and turns for the door. “I’ll have them prepare a new body for you, and—”
“What? No!” Kane snaps.
Davie stops and turns his widening gaze to Kane. So do I.
He’s breathing shallow and fast, a different kind of fire in his eyes — he’s glaring at Davie, unafraid and strong, his entire body tensing.
He’s just like him. The man from those hazy memories.
Was that what Davie had meant by ‘familiar’? Is there something more to him and I?
“He is not some mindless puppet you can force into this! Into dying whenever it’s most convenient for you!” Kane yells. By the look on his twisting face, it’s a surprise he doesn’t shove Davie into the wall. “He’s not some robot! He’s a human, just like you, and you can’t treat him like—”
A slap across the cheek shuts him up.
Davie grabs Kane by the collar of his shirt so hard it rips from the seam, and yanks him closer.
Kane’s eyes widen, but as he blinks, the shock disappears and the burning anger rises in its place.
“Do not speak to me like that,” Davie snarls. His tone is beyond a threat — it’s a promise. “You hear me, soldier?”
“Yessir,” Kane hisses through clenched fists and gritted teeth.
I stare at the two, frozen in place, my heart pounding in my sore chest.
What the hell is Kane doing? Doesn’t he know what happens to disobedient Expendables? He can’t be this stupid!
Davie releases Kane with a shove, scoffs, and heads for the door. “I’ll send someone in to finish that body. And Kane…” He stops at the door to look at him, icy hatred in his gaze. “You better behave when they come. I have deleted your kind for less.”
Davie steps outside and slams the door shut. As the echo of the blam fades, a second passes in silence.
Then another.
And another—
Before Kane drops down on his chair, groaning, and pushes his hands up against his face so hard, his cheeks mush into his eyes. “God. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to do that. It’s just… This...” He falls quiet with another frustrated groan.
I watch him, something weird spreading in my chest. Something I can’t figure out.
Why does he care so much about what happens to me?
“This is wrong,” he finally says, drops his hands, and meets my gaze. There are tears in his eyes.
The sight makes my lungs trap my breath.
“This is wrong! It’s like we’re worth nothing but what we can do for them!” he continues. Frustration and anger boil in his tone. “I know I’m new, but I want more. I want to be more than their weapon who lives and dies when they want it! And I hate that I can’t have any of it. How is this fair? We’re just like them! Fuck!”
He slams his hands on his knees and doubles, hiding his face into his hands.
I stare at him, a lump in my throat, knowing I should say something, but what even is there?
I’m sorry? It’ll be okay? Don’t cry?
Those are just bunch of meaningless words.
But I have to try.
“It’s okay,” I say.
“Sorry.” Kane lifts his gaze back up to me and laughs weakly. Tears glimmer in his eyes. “I’m sorry. I just… I hate this. You know? Hate they can use us like this. But what do I know?” He pauses to draw in a deep breath. “You’re the expert here, and I’m a newbie who just got out of his first assignment. So if you say it’s okay, that this isn’t that bad, then…”
Don’t, I want to say. Don’t believe me.
He forces a smile. Though he tries, it isn’t enough to mask the defeat in his eyes. “Then, I’ll believe you.”
Those words, that look…
My heart wrenches.
And from the bottom of it, I want to tell him that it is indeed okay, that dying and coming back is really not that bad and I’m used to it — to save the innocence in his eyes and let him be happy for a little while longer. To face tomorrow with the same joy and honest optimism I’d seen in those same eyes half a day earlier.
To not cry for me.
But this isn’t okay, and if I tell him that it is, if I lie to him, it’ll only hurt more when it’s him lying on the ground, bleeding to a meaningless death.
Yet, there is no other choice, because I won’t be the one to destroy that innocence. I can’t be.
He is all I’ve lost. All I can never regain. And if he can remain happy for a week, a day, or, hell, even an hour longer, the lie is worth it.
Tears rise to my eyes as I force a smile that rips my heart in two. “You know, it’s actually not that—”
“We could run away.”
His words stop me dead on my tracks.
Kane lifts his gaze to me. There it is again — that fire in his eyes, that drive to live and find something better. He wipes the tears away and nods. “We can,” he says, and he is so sure of his words that my heart beats a little faster.
Could we?
“I mean it,” he says. “We can just get up and leave. They’re not gonna waste soldiers on trying to find us.”
I stare at him, unable to utter a word.
Running away.
It’s been a long time since I last thought about that.
“I know you’re injured, but we can do it,” he continues. His words come out faster and faster as desperation and excitement grow in his tone. “I’ll steal a wheelchair, or— or I’ll carry you on my back, or whatever you need! But we can do it. I swear, we can.”
“Why?” is all I can ask.
He smiles, looking like he thinks I’m an idiot. “Because you deserve better than this.”
I scoff. It’s unfair for him to use my own thoughts against myself.
“Also, don’t think I’m stupid. I saw it in your eyes out there, when you pushed me away and went out on your own,” he continues. “You didn’t want me to get hurt, right? But it would’ve gotten us both in trouble to come back empty-handed, so you went ahead and sacrificed yourself.”
A heat rises to my cheeks. I can’t help the laugh. “I didn’t know I was so easy to read.”
“So I’m right?” he asks.
I hesitate.
The truth will hurt him. It will. But he isn’t an idiot, and I can’t keep lying to him after he’s already figured out the truth.
So I close my eyes.
“Dying, it’s… It’s agony.” My voice is a whisper as the words fight me. “It leaves you scarred and empty and terrified of it happening again, and the worst part is… You know it will. That there’s no ending it. No matter how many times you die, you’ll always come back. And I… I didn’t want you to go through it.”
Kane’s breathing picks up. “How many times have you…?”
“Twelve.”
“Shit.”
Warm fingers curl around mine. I open my eyes to look at him sitting right there next to me. The fire in his gaze is warm now. It’s hopeful and confident and kind, and a part of me melts — a part I had forgotten exists.
“So what do you say?” he asks. “If we run, neither of us will have to worry about dying again. We can go somewhere safe.”
“If we get caught, they’ll reset us,” I remind him, even though I’m not sure I fear that possibility.
That fire in him...
My heart picks up the pace.
What if he’s right? What if we could run?
“And if we stay, we’ll never be anything but their slaves to live and die at their command,” Kane says. “I really think it’s worth the risk. We either make it or nothing changes.”
I don’t let the rushing of my heart show. “Where could we even go?”
“Well, I heard they aren’t fighting in Iceland.”
I can’t help the burst of laughter. It sends a flare of pain down my gut, turning my laughing into airy gasps as I squeeze my eyes shut once more.
“Iceland, huh?” I manage. “That’s— That’s a long way from here.”
Kane’s hold of my hand tightens as the grin on his lips widens. “It’s just a hop and a skip and a boat-ride away. I heard they’re taking refugees from all over the world, and they have no laws regarding artificial people. Aden, we could be real people there. There’d be no more this— This, dying and fighting and being all miserable. And I know I’m a newbie who has no idea what it’s like, but out there today with you? I saw enough. I don’t want this, and I know you don’t want it either. When that warehouse blew up… You were screaming and I was terrified. And that asshole’s just gonna kill you? Put you through all that agony like you’re worth nothing, after everything you’ve done for him? To hell with that! We deserve better. You deserve better.”
The pain eases and I lift my gaze to him. Thar confident, hopeful glimmer in his dark brown eyes makes me smile.
How could I ever kill that sparkle?
“Okay,” I say, and it’s the easiest word I’ve ever said.
Kane gasps, snapping upright. “That’s—”
“But,” I interrupt, “let’s wait for me to get into my new body first. After that, we have to get out and destroy our backups. I mean, what good does it do if we’re killed somewhere out there and just get reborn here again?”
He furrows his brows at me, though the excitement never really disappears. “Are you sure? About the new body, I mean.”
“My back’s broken. I can barely wiggle my toes. If we want to go, I need a new one.”
“But what about the pain and the scars and—”
“It’ll be different this time,” I say, slip my hand out of his grasp, and smack him across the forehead. “Because it’s for me. Not them.”
A shy smile rises on Kane’s lips. He nods. “If you’re sure. Tell me what I need to do.”
xx
“Did you know that we were designed to yearn freedom?” Kane asks. He lies next to me, his hands behind his head as a pillow. “I saw it when I hacked in to delete our files.”
Waves beat against the sides of the ship in a rhythm I never want to end. Chatter echoes from somewhere far away, but here, on this empty, dark deck at the rear of the massive ship, there’s no one but us. The milky way crosses the pitch black sky, and I realize this is the first time I’ve ever seen it.
I keep my gaze on the sea of stars. “Well, that came back to bite them in the ass.”
Kane sighs. “It kinda makes me wonder how real I am. Do I only want this because they designed me to want this?”
A smile grows on my lips. I roll over onto my side, closer to him. “You think too much. But the answer is no.”
He turns a bit more sideways and faces me, a grin crossing his face. “You sound sure.”
“I am,” I say, shrugging as well as my position lets me. “You were the one who said it first. We’re people, just like them. Who cares what they designed us to be? We already defied it.”
He lifts an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
In the darkness, his eyes are almost black; and as gorgeous as the stars are, I don’t want to turn my gaze from him.
I clear my throat.
Focus, Aden.
“I mean, we were designed to be the perfect soldiers,” I say. “We were designed to fight, to yearn to win the war, to find that sort of freedom. We weren’t meant to disobey our leaders or run away. We weren’t designed to do any of that, and yet, here we are.”
I roll onto my back, lifting my gaze up to the stars.
They really can’t compare to his eyes.
Kane’s voice is soft as he laughs. “Okay, yeah, since you put it that way. Maybe I do think too much.”
“You most definitely do.”
“But why did we start disobeying them?” he asks. “And when? They’re our creators, so couldn’t they nip it in the bud? Make changes to our code and that’s that?”
I shrug. “Maybe they just don’t care. As long as people keep dying, they can make more of us, so even if a few disobey and run, it’s no issue.”
“Huh,” Kane says. “That makes sense. I guess.”
Silence falls on us.
It’s been a long time since I could lie down and watch the stars like this. So long, I don’t even want to think back to it.
The memories of my first lives are hazy. Back when I was nothing but a thing, an object only practicing independent thought, decades before the war ever started.
But no matter how hazy my memories are, I remember him. In another body, yes, but I remember a man just like him by my side. A man with the same fire in his eyes, the same kindness in his tone, and the same need for freedom. A man who taught me hope. A man who made my smile a little brighter and my heart beat a little faster.
Was this designed?
Kane moves closer to me. He brings his hand to my palm and curls his fingers around mine. I smile and return the hold as my heart fills with something he’d reminded me I could feel.
Nah.
There is no way anyone could design a feeling like this.
I turn my head to sneak a glance at him, but his eyes are already on me.
He grins. “You look happy. Relaxed.”
“You too,” I say.
“Well, I am,” he says. “Nobody’s gonna force us into anything ever again. And when we die, we’ll die. There’s no code to bring us back to that hell anymore. And Iceland’s only a few more hours away. We made it. What’s there to worry or feel shitty about? And yeah, anything could happen, but whatever waits for us in Iceland… It’s gotta be better than what we had.”
My smile widens. I trace my thumb over the top of his hand. “By the way, you gotta teach me how to paint.”
“Seriously?” he asks and melts into an innocent little laugh. “Sorry. Sure. I’d be happy to. I just didn’t take you for the type that’d enjoy something like that.”
“Honestly, me neither,” I say. “But who knows? I’ve never gotten the chance to try it, or anything else, really. So... I want to find out what I like.”
Kane’s eyes light up as he smiles, and I swear my heart can’t take it.
“You’ll figure it out,” he says, nudging closer to me. His voice is soft. “You’re free now.”
I can feel a heat rise on my cheeks. I touch my forehead against his and close my eyes.
Thank you.
