What Makes a Family? Pt23
Beginning   Previous  Next
“What have you done to Cain?” Damian sounded ready to attack her if she gave the wrong answer, and Marinette felt her own anger rising again at the thought that her twin’s life didn’t include laughter. It only got worse when it hit her that her baby brother thought it was a cause for worry. She’d been so focused on Cass that it hadn’t really sunk in that she had other relatives. Relatives that all seemed to be extremely damaged. She felt a knot growing in her stomach and lost her appetite.
Everyone was talking. She couldn’t concentrate on it to figure out who was arguing and who was trying to calm the others down. She was far too busy trying to figure out how to reconcile the fact that both her biological siblings had been raised in literal hell while she had a near ideal childhood until Hawkmoth showed up. What made her so special? Why was the air so thin?
“It’s not your fault.” Mari opened her eyes to find Cass’ worried face only a few inches in front of her. The words were soft, and she doubted anyone else would have heard them, even if they weren’t all still bickering back and forth. She reached forward to grasp both her wrists. It was comforting to feel her twin’s steady pulse under her fingers. Especially given how erratic her own still was.
“It still hurts to know that I was safe and happy while you were basically being tortured.” Cass just offered an acknowledging hum. It was nice to not have someone telling her why what she felt was wrong or illogical for a change. It always confused her why people thought pointing out the obvious would help when feelings generally don’t have anything to do reason.
“Home?” Mari felt her grip tighten on instinct at the question. Yes, she wanted to go home and process all this without so many strangers around, but she’d be leaving Cass over her own dead body right now. “Together.” Her chest loosened and she could finally breathe properly again.
“Yes, please.” Cass stood and pulled her up as well, which finally seemed to get the attention of the others.
“Sweetheart, are you alright? You look pale.” Her Papa’s concerned voice brought all the focus back to her, and wasn’t that uncomfortable.
“I’m fine Papa, just tired. We were going to go home and rest.” There was a pause before all the boys started yelling again. Well, all except Tim, anyway. From what she could gather, they were under the impression that she was kidnapping Cass. Though she couldn’t really follow their conversation. Chloe finally let out a shrill whistle to get them to stop, and Cass let go of her to sign at them. While she didn’t have a clue what was being said, Cass looked annoyed and Chloe looked mildly impressed, so she assumed Cass was either defending her or telling them they were idiots. Probably both. Bruce seemed content to let them hash things out until Damian signed something.
“Absolutely not.” He tried to argue, still signing, but Bruce cut him off. “Cass was invited. We were not. Not to mention, neither one of your sisters requires a babysitter.” Mari had a feeling Bruce was only talking out loud to include her in the conversation. There was also a bit of a warning in his tone, but she wasn’t sure who it was directed at.
“You can all come by tomorrow to visit if you’d like. You two girls go on ahead. We’ll get the others caught up on the Hawkmoth situation.” Her Maman’s voice was a bit too cheerful and, given the way Cass was eyeing her, she caught it as well. On the plus side, it would give them a chance to talk without anyone else interfering. She could only hope that there wouldn’t be bloodshed in the meantime. Luka started to stand, but only got halfway before Kagami pulled him back down.
“We’ll come by tomorrow as well.” Kagami was staring at Luka when she spoke. It made Mari grateful that they’d been open to the idea of dating each other. She was fairly certain none of them would have been able to be in a successful relationship as a pair. They were just too similar and too different at the same time. Having three people seemed to even things out for some reason. Someone was always calm enough to be the voice of reason.
When she and Cass walked out of the room, she felt bad about leaving everyone in the charged atmosphere. Her parents’ normal hospitality had a sharp edge to it. Damian seemed to be trying to intimidate everyone in the room with his glares, while the rest of the boys didn’t seem to know what to make of everything. Chloe and Kagami were ready to go to war if it came to it, and poor Bruce was trying to hold everything together. Luka, Selina, and Alfred were the only ones who weren’t tense. At the same time, she felt herself relaxing as soon as it was just the two of them walking out of the hotel and towards the bakery.
They walked close together, too close for most people if they didn’t want to trip over each other. But neither backed off. Mari made sure their shoulders or arms were in constant contact and she could feel how much Cass appreciated it. It grounded them both, though Marinette felt certain she needed it more at the moment. The thought of Cass being out of her sight, or even being too far away to reach out and touch, was enough to start up her anxiety. Logically, she knew they didn’t need to be so close to each other, and that Cass could take care of herself. Unfortunately, there was also a voice inside her telling her it would be disastrous for them to separate. What made her even more paranoid was that she wasn’t certain if it was her insecurity or her Guardian instincts.
It was a relief when they finally stepped into the apartment. She’d shielded the entire building with protective magic that would keep them safe or at least alert them to threats so they couldn’t be ambushed. It also allowed her to figure out why she was so tense in the first place.
“Come on up to my room so I can give you Plagg’s Miraculous.” While she knew that Plagg was still with Cass, having their Miraculous offered extra levels of protection, not to mention a lot more options. It would also be another way to connect them and help settle the irrational voice in her that kept panicking about the possibility of being separated again. Maybe she should give her Kaalki too, just in case. Before she could get too deep into her worry, Cass took her hand and squeezed. That was all it took for her to relax. “Sorry.”
Cass just gave her hand another squeeze with a commiserating smile. It was both depressing and comforting to know that she wasn’t alone in her concern. Rather than dwelling on it, she pulled Cass up to her room. Her entire focus was on getting the ring from where it was hidden. Well, at least until Cass let go of her hand. She turned to find her twin smiling sadly at the pictures she had on a bulletin board. Pictures that showed her enjoying her life. The stab of guilt that came back made her nauseous. When she finally managed to take down all her protections to grab the ring, she walked over to hug the other girl from behind.
“The boys will come spy on us.” Mari let out a snort of amusement.
“They’re going to be extremely bored then. Wayzz? Trixx?” The two Kwami flew out and Cass watched them with interest. “Can we get a shield that blocks sight and sound in the room and an illusion that shows the two of us asleep?” Trixx let out a laugh before bowing.
“As you wish, Guardian.” Once of these days she was going to get Wayzz to relax. Ever since she’d become Guardian, they seemed to think the formality was required. She had no idea why. Instead of dwelling on it, she slipped Plagg’s ring on Cass’ finger. They both relaxed as soon as it was in place.
“If you want it to be something other than a ring, let me know and I’ll teach you how to change it into what you want.” Cass was just studying the Miraculous, and Plagg came out to cuddle under her chin. The longer she looked at it, the more Marinette saw it shift. Eventually, what was once a plain silver ring now seemed to have etchings all over it. What’s more, the designs seemed to shift. There were daggers and thorns replaced by ladybugs, cats, and yin-yang symbols. Then that was changed to an inscription in the Guardian language that she couldn’t get a good look at before it to shifted.
“Only you two can see the ring for what it is. Everyone else will see it how it was.” Tikki’s comment broke the trance they seemed to be under and when Mari looked over, all the Kwami were staring at them with varying levels of shock.
“Why can we see it?” All the Kwami shared looks before Wayzz answered.
“Because your souls are products of the Miraculous you wield.”
“What does that mean?” None of them seemed to want to answer and she started to get worried. “Is it dangerous?”
“No kit.” Plagg flew up so they could look at both of them. “It’s the difference between Chosen and True Chosen of the Miraculous.” When she just blinked at them in confusion, Plagg shot Tikki a glare. “You never told her?”
“It wasn’t necessary.” Plagg let out a growl before returning their attention to her and Cass.
“Chosen are people who resonate well with specific Miraculous. You are technically a Chosen for all Miraculous, but you’re the True Chosen of the Ladybug, as Cass is of the Black Cat, because your souls were brought into existence by the creation of said Miraculous.” Well, that was new. Plagg’s look turned mischievous. “So you’re basically our children.” She couldn’t help the amused huff that left her, and Cass giggled in front of her.
“Just what we need, more over protective beings to try to boss us around.” Plagg snickered.
“Maybe Tikki, but I’m sure they already have been. I’m far too lazy for that nonsense.”

How small must the world be for both Bruce and Tim to witness John and Mary Grayson's deaths
Or for 10-year-old Duke to crack the Riddler's puzzle before Batman swoops in and saves the day, long before his powers came into play
Or for Sheila Haywood to leave her son only to end up assisting his killer a decade and a half later
Not to mention the popular fanon concept of Jason knowing baby Damian in the League of Assassins
Now imagine how many other invisible strings could've tied them together
Like what if Tim and Jason went to the same school when Jason was Robin but all they shared was the occasional bump and "excuse me" in the busy halls
Or what if Babs was a tutor and helped an elementary-aged Steph finally understand her homework only for the Browns to cancel after a couple sessions because they couldn't afford it
What if the first person to buy Cass a hot meal was Kate on one of her travels
What if Alfred witnessed young Selina shoplifting groceries but chose to turn a blind eye
What if Jason lived on the same streets as the Row siblings and gave little Harper tips on how to use tools and defend her brother
What if Steph and Duke shared the same school bus, only he sat in the front while she was toward the back
What if the first person to teach Tim how to tie his shoes was Bruce at a gala because Jack and Janet were busy talking to someone important
What if Bette did a DNA test for fun and found a connection in Nanda Parbat but just assumed the results was faulty because she knew her whole family, right?
What if 8-year-old Dick, the day before his parents died, stayed at a cheap hotel near Crime Alley and found 4-year-old Jason wandering alone and said, "I'll be your big brother for tonight"
What if the universe knew they were made for each other and wouldn't rest until they realized it too

pjo x batkids
DICK & JAY
neither of them know they’re demigods, dick thought john grayson was his bio dad and jason thought catherine was his bio mom.
hermes met dick’s mom while she was traveling with the circus. he stayed with marie for about two years after dick was born (taking care of him while she performed) before leaving. a few years later she met john grayson and fell in love. she would often read dick greek myths but never told him about his parentage.
after dick’s parents die in gotham, he (10) is sent to juvie and then an orphanage, which he runs away from.
he survives on the streets for a few months by busking (performing tricks for money) and living in abandoned buildings that no one else can reach. he then meets 8 year old jason todd who is living with catherine and willis todd. they bond pretty much immediately and dick visits him every day. they do cons and steal tires together, plus dick is an expert pickpocket. he is there for jason when catherine and then willis die, and they live in willis’ shitty apartment together.
about a year later they are found by a satyr who explains that they are demigods and that there’s a summer camp for kids like them. they are VERY distrustful at first because that sounds crazy but also it’s a satyr so maybe they’re not lying. eventually they decide they might as well go, gotham is a shithole anyway.
they get to CHB without incident bc neither of them really attract monsters and the Gotham Stench hides their scents anyway. they are the first of the batkids to arrive at camp.
dick (11) is claimed by hermes about three weeks after arriving. him and jason (9) live at camp year-round. when he’s 16 dick becomes head counselor of hermes cabin.
JASON
son of athena. father unknown. was left on the streets and found by catherine todd, who convinced willis to take him in. he was living with them when he met dick. they immediately bonded and after jason is orphaned they live together, until a year later when a satyr finds them.
he’s not claimed for a while after arriving, but doesn’t really mind bc it means he gets to stay with dick. eventually claimed years later but still eats lunch with the hermes cabin cuz dick is his family.
CASS
hades/bruce meets lady shiva and falls in love with her deadliness. they have a child together but he has to abandon her bc the ‘no more kids’ pact the big 3 have.
sandra wu-san meets david cain while pregnant and tasks him with training her daughter. he agrees and lady shiva leaves soon after giving birth. cain does not know she’s a demigod. he trains her to be the perfect weapon and hades/bruce can do nothing about it without alerting his brothers to her existence.
her powers manifest after the first time she kills someone (at 8), and she runs away. she travels across the world for years until a satyr finds her and brings her to CHB. she (10) is claimed soon after, and enjoys living alone in the hades cabin. chiron and babs teach her how to read and speak, even tho she’s learned a bit over the years. she arrives a year after dick (12) & jason (10)
TIM
athena met jack and janet drake at one of their archeological digs, and admired their intellect. she gave them tim as a gift. jack and janet spent the first few years of his life at home with him, until they decided he was old enough to join them on their travels. he was an incredibly smart child and was very self-sufficient, so it didn’t cause them any trouble. he didn’t go to school, but had a tutor that accompanied them on their trips.
when he is 10 his parents die in a plane crash that he survives. after their funeral, he ditches NYC (where they were buried) and athena sends an owl to guide him to camp. he arrives at CHB about a year after cass (11) and 2 years after dick (13) & jason (11). he is jay’s favorite bio sibling.
STEPH
daughter of hermes. raised by crystal brown in gotham until a satyr finds her (11) and brings her to camp. frequently exchanges letters with her mom. arrives a year after tim (11), two years after cass (12), and three years after dick (14) and jason (12)
claimed few months after arriving at camp. she is dick’s favorite bio sibling
DUKE
son of apollo. one of the rare apollo children that can control light. raised by his mom in newark until they were attacked by a monster and his mom was injured.
he left in order to keep her safe, and went to CHB (which apollo had told her about, and she told duke about). he keeps in contact with her through letters and iris messages. he is claimed about a month after arriving at camp. he (11) arrives two years after steph (13), three years after tim (13), four years after cass (14) and five years after dick (16) and jason (14)
DAMIAN
similar to lady shiva, bruce/hades is captivated by talia’s deadliness. they have a child together, which she tries to hide from ra’s, but he soon finds out and learns he is a demigod. to him, this makes him even more fit to ascend the demon throne (the LoA is a cult, and the lazarus pit is magic).
damian is trained to defeat monsters and humans alike, and is gifted a stygian iron sword for his fifth birthday. bruce/hades had told talia about CHB, and she is finally able to send damian there when he is 10.
he arrives three years after duke (14), five years after steph (16), six years after tim (16), seven years after cass (17), and eight years after dick (19) and jason (17)
BABS
has been at CHB since she was 13, the same year dick & jason arrived. she is the new oracle of delphi. basically rachel elizabeth dare. is 21 when damian arrives. was paralyzed at 16 when she tried to interfere with a prophecy, and has been in a wheelchair since
HELENA
daughter of ares, became a Hunter of Artemis at 16 (the year duke arrived at CHB)

MDC Commissions: The Ghost King
(A series of one shots where Marinette has some extremely unusual clients. What could possible go wrong? ao3)
When Marinette moved to Gotham after retiring as Ladybug, she had expected craziness and chaos. And living with her biological father and his family, had made her believe that she had seen everything. For example, when she sat down to breakfast that morning she had been fully prepared to see Damian and Jason engaged in a rubber band war over the head of a slumped Tim, who couldn't decide if he was awake or asleep. She didn't flinch to see Dick balancing six trays of breakfast food, while Alfred followed him with barely concealed panic. She didn't even raise an eyebrow when Bruce came in with bag under his eyes, and switched Tim's coffee with his own empty mug. Barbara rolling in arguing about the probability of aliens owning all of the bowling alleys with Duke was a completely casual conversation. And Steph filming everything while she cackled was just the cherry on top.
She sat down next to Cass (the only other kid who was quiet), as Dick precariously started setting down the trays, and Bruce called for his other two sons to sit down. They were getting a little violent, and he wasn't having much luck. It was only once the last tray was on the table, that everyone finally settled down to eat, but Marinette had a feeling that it was only a matter of time before Jason and Damian decided to start chucking food at each other. At which point, Dick would yell "Food Fight" and they'd all be required by sibling law to join in. However, Marinette was not prepared for what happened literally two seconds after everyone was seated.
Alfred had just set down the coffee pot, causing Tim to jerk awake, when a bright flash of light in the middle of the table had everyone leaping into a fighting stance. They stood silent as they watched the glowing ball of light drift lazily around the table and settle in front of her. She squinted as it flashed blindingly before dropping something on her plate with an audible "Thunk." Marinette blinked the stars out of her eyes and stared down at a thick, glowing green scroll. It was very official looking with a glowing green wax seal and a golden center.
Marinette stared at it in wonder, and took a long sip of her coffee. It was far to early for this.
"Uh Mari," Dick was the first to speak as they all stared at the scroll. "What's that?"
She looked up at him blank faced, "It's a scroll Dick."
"I know that but---" Dick scoffed but Steph interrupted him with an eager,
"What's it say?"
"I wouldn't open it Mars," Duke said hesitantly, "That green light around it is...well it's some powerful other worldly shit, I'll say that much."
"Hmm," Marinette hummed.
"Still," Barbara said, "We can't ignore it. What if it's Guardian business?"
"Has the Order ever contacted you this way before?" Bruce asked eyeing the thing like it was a bomb full of joker gass.
"Nope," Marinette said still not moving.
"We should destroy it," Damian said simply reaching for the sword he had stashed under the table.
"Bad idea," Cass said softly, "Important."
"But it could be a trap," Tim said lifting his mug and staring in confusion when he found it empty. "I can run some tests on it maybe."
"I'm with Demon," Jason said gruffly, "That thing is giving me the heebie jeebies."
"Did you just say heebie jeebies?" Stephanie said in confusion.
"Whatever it is I don't think you should touch it Mari," Bruce said.
"Seriously Jay?" Steph said, "Heebie Jeebies?"
"I agree with father," Damian said tensely, "This thing reeks of magic. Perhaps we should call a magic user."
"I can call Zatanna," Dick offered.
"Heebie jeebies?"
"Let it go Steph, this is serious!"
 "But...heebie jeebies?"
The dinning room descended into utter chaos literally not even five minutes into their meal. Marinette sighed and took another sip of her coffee as her family yelled around her. She had been up all night helping Barbara with Oracle stuff and finishing up some designs for her company. And listening to her siblings fight over how to deal with ominous glowing scrolls that appeared during their breakfast was not how she wanted to start the morning. She opened her purse and Tikki flew out to look at the scroll, as Jason knocked over his chair about to launch at Steph. Tikki nodded as Dick moved to stop Jason from attacking Steph. This time Cass had taken over recording the insanity.
Everyone froze as Marinette picked up the scroll. But nothing happened. She didn't suddenly combust or summon hellfire upon them all, so she took that as a good sign and broke the seal. Immediately, her entire family began to panic and some even lunged to snatch the scroll away from her. Marinette leaped back keeping the scroll as far away from them as she could. She sent them a confused, disapproving look as if to say, "Back off it's my magic scroll get your own!" But she read the words out loud just the same.
"To the right honorable, MDC, from the court of his Majesty the Ruler of the Infinite Realms, The Ghost King, Guardian of the Eternal Souls, Protector of the Living World, The Sleepless One, The Halfa, Keeper of the Abyss, etc. Greetings.
His majesty humbly requests your services in the designing of his coronation attire for his ascension to the throne of the Deathless King. Should you accept this most honorable, and glorious commission, simply preform the included spell before the end of five days. Preferably between 4 and 5 o'clock central. Money is no object unless you wish some other form of Eternal payment. In which case, terms will have to be agreed upon in person. You will also be invited, along with a guest of your choosing, to witness this most monumental event within the Infinite Realms.
Kindest Regards,
The King's Advisor, Physician, and Head Scientist, and Leader of the Far Frozen
Frostbite. "
Marinette looked up at her family who were staring at her in awe. None of them quiet new how to take this, so for a moment there was complete silence. In her head Marinette began counting down, "Three...two...one." And the entire dinning room erupted into chaos. Marinette just sighed as she returned her attention to the commission. "What even is my life?" she muttered.
Marinette summoned the Ghost King in the private studio at her fashion house. She reserved this studio for her VIP commissions like Jagged, Clara, Diana, and her family. At that moment it was just her, Jason, and the kwamis, which was already causing chaos as half of the little gods flew around in an attempt to help without actually helping. Jason was making no attempt to corral them like he had promised to do, and instead decided to just stand and scowl as Marinette prepared the summoning circle exactly as it was depicted on the scroll. Marinette had just wanted it to be her and the kwamis, but her family all resolutely refused. Apparently, summoning an unknown, mythical, entity of unquestionable power by herself was not something they were comfortable with. So they compromised and decided that Jason was best suited to over see the meeting. After all, one of the titles was "the Ghost King" and Jason was a zombie...technically.
Still Marinette wasn't sure how well he would do in a fight. If it came to that, then the kwamis would be her best shot at protecting them. She wasn't sure how Jason's guns would do against something called, "The Keeper of the Abyss." Still she was glad he was here, in a way. "Alright!" she said standing, "It's ready!"
"Hmph," Jason grunted, "I don't like this, Pixie."
"Oh come on," Marinette said with a smile as she tried to hide her own terror, "Don't tell me you're not a little bit curious."
Jason shook his head and muttered something about not wanting to die again, which Marinette elected to ignore. Instead she began the chant and called upon the Ghost King, the Ruler of the Infinite Realms, The Bringer of the Frost, Guardian of the Eternal Souls, Protector of the Living World, The Sleepless One, The Halfa, Keeper of the Abyss, etc. " Man this guy has a lot of titles," she thought. The runes began to glow as the light began to melt upward into a swirling portal of ink and stars. The edges of the portal were wrapped in a shifting green cloud that reminded Marinette of the Lazarus Pit. "That's...probably...not a good sign," she thought but it was too late. Because a white hand emerged from the blackness and Marinette felt the magic in the room surge with the sudden pressure of power. She gasped, and her breath came our in a cloud as the hand was followed by a foot. The kwami gathered around her ready to fight, and Jason's hand flew to his gun. They all held their breath as the Ruler of the Infinite Realms emerged, in all of his power and glory.
"All I'm saying, Jazz, is that I don't see the point! I mean it's not like I'm going to be dressing like this while I'm king!" A teenage boy cried as he stepped casually from the portal.
"It's not about you, Danny!" said the tall, red haired woman who followed him into the studio, "It's about your subjects. They need to see that you're taking this seriously, so they know to take you seriously. By presenting yourself as a king before them, they will be more likely to trust you as their king."
"She's right Danny," said a goth goth girl, "You're entering the world of high ghostly society. In those circles image is everything whether your alive or dead. Ha, you're gonna love it!"
The boy, Danny, groaned into his hands, and then turned to face Marinette and Jason who were staring in quiet shock and confusion. "Hi!" He said stepping forward holding out his hand to shake, "I'm Danny Phantom, future King of the Infinite Realms, nice to meet ya!"
Marinette blue screened for a moment as she took in her client. This...was not what she was expecting. She had been fully prepared to meet some sort of strange eldritch animal/human/void type hybrid. Instead she got a teenage, human boy who couldn't have been older than 16. The only thing unusual about was his snow white hair, and glowing green eyes. She could work with this. So, Marinette smiled and shook his hand, "Marinette Dupain-Cheng-Wayne, MDC, the pleasure is all mine. And this is my brother, Jason Todd, he's going to be assisting us today!"
Danny looked over at Jason and gaped, "Dude!" he exclaimed, "You core is messed up! What happened to you?!"
"Danny!" the red head, Jazz exclaimed, "Be nice! I'm sorry," she said addressing Jason, "My brother might be one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse, but he's still a teenager and often forgets his manners. I'm Jazz by the way!" She held out her hand, and Jason numbly shook it as his eyes expressed that he was still trying to mentally process what was happening.
"And I'm Sam," the goth girl said stepping forward as the portal closed behind her, "I'm a big fan of your work, Miss. MDC. Your eco friendly punk spring collection was truly inspired!"
"Thank you," Marinette said with a smile, "And I see you're wearing some of it! I have to say, the way you've dressed up the vest is amazing, I never would have thought to match it with that color skirt!"
Sam blushed as she straighten the faux dark green leather vest. Jason then took the opportunity to speak up saying, "I hate to interrupt but...what's the story here?"
"Oh," Danny said as they all moved toward the couches that surrounded the circular stage, where the finished products would be touched up and fitted. "Well you see our parents," he gestured between himself and his sister, "are scientists who for some reason decided to study ghosts."
"We thought they were crazy!" Jazz exclaimed with a desperate laugh.
"They are crazy," Sam said, "Just turns our they were also right."
"They built a portal to what they called the Ghost Zone," Danny explained, "It's kind of like the afterlife in between afterlives. A realm between realms...sort of...it's complicated. And that's not really the point, the point is, they thought it didn't work. Until, Sam, Tucker and I were goofing off in the lab and there was an...'accident.'"
"And you died?!" Marinette asked in concerned.
"Yes, no, sorta kinda," Danny said casually, "I half died. I'm half dead. I'm half ghost."
"The technical term is Halfa," Jazz explained.
"Danny is alive," Sam said, "But at the same time, he's dead."
"Schrodinger's kid," Jason muttered, and Danny beamed.
"Yeah, you see! This guy gets it!" He exclaimed. "So anyway, now that the portal was open someone had to make sure that the ghosts didn't overwhelm the land of the living, and vise versa. And since I am both living and dead, I was the only one who could do it."
Marinette twisted one of her earrings with a glance at Tikki, who was shuffling the other kwamis out of sight since there was clearly no danger, "I get that."
She and Danny exchanged an understanding look, before he continued, "Yeah, well, one of those ghosts turned out to be the actual Ghost King who had gone all tyrant, and tried to disrupt the balance between life and death thus destroying both realms. I might have beaten him in single combat thus accidently becoming the next Ghost King."
"How do you accidently become the Ghost King?" Jason said incredulously.
"By beating the former monarch in single combat, I thought we just established that?" Danny said.
"Any way," Jazz said purposefully, "Danny was still in high school at the time, so he couldn't exactly claim the throne. And besides there was a lot about inter-death politics that he had to learn. So we had to hold off on the coronation until he was ready."
"And now here you are!" Marinette said brightly.
"Here we are!" Danny said in return. "Got to say though, randomly becoming the guardian of one of the cornerstones of all existence before all before my 18th birthday, not how I expected my life to turn out. But like you said 'here we are!'"
Marinette glanced at the kwami again and said softly, "Yeah, I get that to."
Danny cocked his head at her, as his glowing green eyes met her piercing blue one. He nodded and said, "Alright then, let's get started shall we. I'm trusting you, Blue eyes!"
Jason scowled at the nickname, but Marinette chuckled and retrieved her tape measure, but stopped as she took in his outfit. It looked like a black and white, rubber hazmat suit that was custom made to fit him. It wasn't the worst thing she had ever seen, and the flaming D, she guessed was a nice touch, but it the girls were right. It didn't scream "King of the Infinite Realms." But it raised a pressing question for her.
"So how do your clothes work?"
"Uh...well...let's see," Danny said as he looked down at his outfit. "Well I suppose I should explain how ghosts work. You see all of this," he gestured to his face and limbs with exaggerated motions, "Is basically all ectoplasm, energy, and magic shaped by the self image of my psyche. So I can shift it to change based on my self image, and that includes my clothes, if I focus. The thing holding it all together is my core." He tapped is chest where his heart should have been. "Basically it's like a...vessel? Yeah, a vessel for my psyche, or spirit, or soul, whatever word you want to use."
"So do you want me to just draw you an outfit, and then you can shift your clothes into that. It might be easier."
"Nuh-uh," Sam said, "That wont work. He can shapeshift, but it's not his specialty. He always shifts back within thirty minutes or sometimes less."
Jazz nodded, "The best thing would be to make him an outfit for his human form, and then he can shift to match that. We can even infuse the fabrics with some of his ectoplasm, so it will be easier for his psyche to recognize it as a part of him."
Marinette froze at the phrasing, and suddenly why Danny was so hesitant to change his ghostly look. His clothes were a part of his self image. This was how his spirit perceived his existence. Marinette began studying hit clothes a lot more closely. Any thing she did could alter his self image for all of eternity, if she wasn't careful. Marinette took a deep breath. This was probably going to end up being the most important piece of her career. "Ok," she said allowing her voice to communicate to Danny just how serious she was taking this commission. "I think I understand. In that case, I'm going to need measurements of both your human form, and your ghost form. If there are any discrepancies, I'm going to need to know now."
Danny smiled softly at her. "Ok." And there was no more arguing or complaining, as he stood patiently while she took his measurements, first in his ghost form, and then in his human form. Jason was writing down the numbers diligently. Almost too diligently, but Marinette understood his silence when he said,
"So this core thing...you said I had one but there was something wrong with it."
"Hmm," Danny said, "Oh yeah. Did you die and get resurrected or something?" Jason nodded silently, completely engrossed in the notepad. "Well, whoever did it did an awful job!"
"Danny!" Jazz exclaimed.
"What? It's true!"
"But that's not how you say it. I am so sorry Jason, my brother can be a little insensitive."
"No it's ok," Jason said, "I'd rather have it blunt and honest, than sugar coated. So what's wrong with me?"
"Nothing's wrong with you per se," Danny mused after a moment of studying Jason. "So obviously you died. And the circumstances were just right so that instead of going to one of the 'afterlives' you went to the space between, the Infinite Realms. Which is probably why you don't remember what happened in between your two lives. Am I right?"
"You'd know better than me," Jason laughed dryly. 'Like you said I don't remember."
"Probably for the best. But anyway," Danny continued, "When you were resurrected, it was done very badly, because you're core is warped. Don't worry it's still intact, so your spirit's safe. But the warped core combined with the corrupted ectoplasm running through your veins! Yeesh! Frankly I'm surprised you're not frothing at the mouth, homicidal maniac right now. Cause that amount of contamination is not good for you mental stability."
The siblings froze and exchanged desperate, almost hopeful looks. "The pit madness," Marinette whispered.
"I get...angry sometimes," Jason explained. "I see green, and then red, and then I...I hurt people."
The girls looked at him with pity, but Danny just nodded with understanding. "Makes sense," was all he said, but Marinette could instantly see the relief of those words wash over Jason's whole being. She knew how much he fought, how much he struggled with his sanity. They tried to help, but pit madness wasn't like normal mental illnesses. It was steeped in ancient magic and the forces of nature them selves. In the end the only advice any of the could logistically give Jason was to fight it. Therapy could give him tools, but when push came to shove none of them understood what it was like.
And to have someone, anyone, say that it made sense. That his reactions to the corruption inside him were not strange, abnormal or grotesque. To have his actions fit inside the bounds of an expected response, a symptom of something that could be categorized...Marinette could not imagine the relief Jason must have been feeling. But it whatever his emotions were they all seemed to be summed up in his next chocked out words, “Is…is there a cure.”
“Yeah, of course there is!” Danny said with his cheerful casualness, that broke all of Jason’s carefully crafted walls. “I can schedule an appointment for you with Frostbite. He’s done some incredible research into the development of Ghost cores. Once, he filters that ectoplasm in your blood stream, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get your core back to it’s proper shape. You’ll have to spend a few days in the Ghost Zone, a week at most. But then your core will start filtering and shaping the ectoplasm on it’s own…think of it as a liver transplant, but with magic and shit.”
“Wow,” Jason breathed. “I…uh…ha…I.t…thank you!”
Danny smiled, “Eh, what are kings for. I mean you are technically one of my subjects.”
“I’m sorry,” Jason said still smiling.
Danny grinned. “When you die, again, you’ll go to the Ghost Zone. My zone. You’re stuck with me buddy!”
Jason threw back his head with a clear bright laugh that was all too rare in Marinette’s opinion. And hearing it now as it rang with hope and joy, only made Marinette’s smile brighter and fuller. They continued to talk about what it would take to get Jason to the Ghost Zone for his “core transplant” as Danny was now calling it. And Marinette was slowly getting a clearer picture of what she was going to make for the young king.
When she finished her measurements and pulled out her note book to start some rough sketches, she turned back to Danny and said, “Ok so we can talk about what you don’t want once I have some ideas mapped out. But first I want to know if there is anything that you do want. A favorite color, a piece of jewelry, a type of belt, anything like that?”
“Your symbol,” Sam said immediately. “You need to have your symbol.”
“I think you should keep your usual color scheme,” Jazz said calmly, “It’s like your signature.”
“Danny?” Marinette asked pointedly.
He thought for a moment and the grinned saying, “Can I get a cape?”
The girls rolled their eyes, and Jason put his head in his hand. But Marinette just beamed and said, “I’ll see what I can do.”

Years later into the future most of the batkids are old some have families now through adoption or biological means, well almost all of the batkids are old the youngest Timothy drake-Wayne is still 17 and had to watch as his younger siblings grow older then him
Dick has Mari she’s in her early teens he also adopts Olivia Desmond who is around 10 or so
Cass and steph end up dating and steph asks for partial custody of her daughter when she is older which she gained
Jason helps take care of lain
And Damian has his army of pets
Tim ends up stuck as the person who watches kids (and Pets) which works for now but will get a little confusing when his nieces and nephews end up older then him
That's a really funny concept (especially cause it makes fun if DC for keeping Tim as 17 for so long). I also like how you made Tim forever be without his own family unit (no kids, significant other, or pets of his own).
It's also really angsty! How long will Tim be 17 for? Does he know why he's still a kid? He's also right on the brink of "adulthood," and that's gotta be really annoying for him.
Do the Bats let him drink if he wants to? Does he know when he was born (or how old he is supposed to be)? I love the hc that YJ got into some stuff they weren't supposed to, and Tim got cursed to be 17 forever (maybe the others got cursed, too).
Does staying 17 also come with an immortality deal, or is it just anti-aging?
The 17 year old forever thing can also tie into the Tim is fae AU/hc.
Tim and his perpetual 17 year old status is a fun setting to play around with (angst, crack, confusion, etc).

Part 4 of timinette siblings with Kon and Bart coming over and bonding?
Maybe they were on an off-world mission of something and they video-called him
A second Anonymous person asked: If you make a part 4 (you do not have to) for the sibling Tim and Marinette, I think its time we see some protective big brother Tim moments don't you think? Stepping in when he spots a guy crowding his sister to suing Lila and Alya when he discovers the bullying, and the blog. Helping Mama Sabine bring evidence to the school board over the mistreatment of Mari, maybe his reaction to hearing Damien calling Mari a 'harlot' or 'tramp' (Tim totally goes to Luka for 'how to be best big bro' advice)
So I’ve decided to put them together. Enjoy!
Siblings Don’t Stand Back and Watch, They Always Get Involved
First <> Previous
Tim absolutely ADORED his sister.  She had done so much for him and he could never thank her and her their parents enough.  Tim had gone from hating who he was and feeling like a tool to be used and tossed away to knowing that he was loved and needed not for his intellect and what he could give, he was needed because he existed and they enjoyed spending time with him.  They were all so supportive of him and his choices, and he almost cried when they said it was okay if he didn’t want to talk some days and just silently stayed with him. No interrogation, no forceful tactics, not even a hint of manipulation, they just loved and cared for him.
He had explained all of this to Cass during a lunch they had together while Marinette was at school.  She had smiled brightly at him and said,
“Happy for you Little Brother.  They good for you.”
Her tone was gentle and he could hear and feel the joy and love that she felt for him.  Once he was finished retelling everything that had happened since they had seen each other in person he asked her about her time in Hong Kong and about all of the different things she had done and learned there.  He loved the way her eyes lit up as she signed out all of her experiences.  The way she moved her hands with such excitement and the swiftness showed just how much she loved the new city she called home.
After they finished their lunch Cass asked if they could surprise Marinette at school.  Now that Tim thought about it, he’s never actually been to Marinette’s school before, and it had been months.  He quickly nodded and they headed to Collège Françoise Dupont to surprise their little sister at her school.  Once they got close enough to the school they could hear a loud commotion which worried Tim.
“Look at Maritrash!”
“Where are your bodyguards now, huh?”
“Not so invincible now, are you?”
“I can’t believe she would do that to Lila!”
“What happened to the sweet girl we once knew?”
Tim and Cass made eye contact for a moment before both rushed through the crowd and through the school in search of the small bluenette.  He had heard things here and there about how cruel some of the people here could be, heard about the girl that could twist anything, but it seems that it was extremely downplayed if this was what was happening during their lunch hour.
They shoved their way toward the center of the gathered mass of students to see Marinette in the center, food completely covering her, and every time she took a step toward the crowd in hopes of an opening to escape, she was pushed back and something else was thrown at her.  And near the center watching what was going on with a face full of sorrow, but eyes full of gleeful malice and Tim snapped.
“Marinette!”
He yelled while rushing towards her which caused her gaze to snap towards him.  He quickly pulled her to his chest which caused her to start shaking, her breath spiking slightly, his shirt becoming damp.  He needed to get them out of Paris and quickly before Hawkmoth got the opportunity to use her rightful emotions against her.
“Cass, I need you to call Kon.”
He yelled over the cacophony of people yelling and shouting profanities toward him.  He couldn’t focus on that right now though, he had to stay vigilant and protect his sister.  She was priority number one at the moment.  He wondered where the others were, but then recalled that Chloe, Adrien, and Kagami were on a business meeting with their parents out of the country.  It didn’t help that Kagami and Luka were out in different schools, but that didn’t explain where Juleka was, and he couldn’t find her in the crowd at all.  He could feel things begin to hit him, but that didn’t matter because they weren’t hitting Mari.
Bang
The entirety of the school froze and turned toward where the noise had come from.  Teachers began to pile out of the room with looks of fury and outrage even before they noticed the crowd of students, but once they did their looks made even Tim shiver in fear.
“So you think it’s funny to trap the entire faculty in the boardroom just so you could cause havoc?  Well you’ve all got another thing coming to you.”
The girl with sinister tear filled eyes spoke, clinging to another student.
“M-Marinette did it!  We tried to get her to-to stop, bu-”
“I’ve heard enough from you Rossi!  After a similar stunt was pulled we were able to get the camera footage sent directly to our phones, we know exactly what happened, and so will your parents.”
At that the girl paled, and Tim felt a vindictive satisfaction.  There was a small yank on his sleeve and he looked to the side to see Cass pulling him towards the doors.  Kon must have arrived.
“Hey, I have a few friends that want to meet you.  Follow me.”
He whispered softly into her ear.  She nodded wordlessly and let herself be pulled along as they traveled past all of the students who were still being yelled at by the teachers and staff.  Once they made it to the stairs Kon ran up to them and looked all three of them over, slightly panicked.
“What happened Tim?”
“Can you take us to the tower?  We need to get out of here quickly.”
Tim urgently replied.
“Lila might become Akumatized.”
Marinette murmured against his chest.  Tim ran his fingers through her hair and whispered,
“It’ll be you if we don’t leave now.”
Tim gently pushed her towards Kon and looked him directly in the eye,
“This is Marinette, take her first and make sure she’s safe.”
Kon nodded and waited till Marinette came towards him before he picked her up and left.  Tim slowly clenched his fists and took in long slow breaths before relaxing them again.  He needed to be level headed right now, he needed to tell their parents about what happened.  Sabine had told him all about how she, Tom, and many other parents protested against the school to the school board and how, because of that, the school had gotten new administration and a stricter zero-tolerance policy.  They needed to know about this.
Cass placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, grounding him, keeping him present.  He carefully placed his hand atop hers, taking one last calming breath before giving her a small nod.
“I need to go tell Tom and Sabine about what’s happening.”
Cass gave a serious nod and once Tim released her hand they made the quick walk to the bakery.
To say Sabine was upset would be the understatement of the century, she was enraged.
“I knew it!  I knew that it wouldn’t be enough.  We are either transferring to homeschool or to a new school completely.  Kagami said that the school she attends gives out scholarships, I just know Marientte would be able to get one with her designs.  She is never going back to that Hell Hole ever again!”
Sabine yelled as she paced anxiously around the apartment flat.  She made a quick turn and looked Tim directly in the eyes, her face softening as she did so when Tim flinched back.
“Sorry dear.  Thank you for saving Marinette.  Please make sure that she’ll be okay for us.”
Tim nodded.
“Of course.  You’ve all helped me so much, and I’d do anything for her.”
Sabine pulled him into a tight hug that he quickly returned.
“I’m so proud of you Tim.  You truly are one of the greatest souls to be on this Earth.”
Tim could feel his eyes water, but he quickly pushed them back feeling Cass’s gaze on the two of them.  He could feel the soft smile she was sending the both of them.  Sabine pulled away a few moments later only to leave a gentle kiss to his temple.
“Tell Marinette that she can stay with your friends as long as she would like.  It will take some time for me to complete the transfer process, but it will happen.”
Tim nodded, his eyes showing a determined fierceness.
“Of course.”
Tim felt his phone buzz.  Kon was back.
“Be safe.  I love you Tim, and please tell Marinette that I love her too.”
Tim nodded shyly, still unused to the open shows of affection.
“I will.”
A pause.
“I love you too.”
It wasn’t the first time he had told them that, but the words still felt foreign on his tongue.  Sabine softened a little more, placing one last kiss on his temple before she stood up and left.  And with that, Cass and Tim left the small apartment to meet Kon who was waiting for them right outside.
“How is she?”
Tim immediately asked.  Kon stared at Tim in shock, his heartbeat was through the roof.
“She was very distraught, but Cassie is taking care of her right now.”
Tim let out a sigh of relief.
“That’s good, Cassie should be able to help her.  Alright, I need you to take us.”
Kon raised a brow, he had so many questions, but from the panicked look on his friend’s (practically brother’s) face, he knew that he wasn’t going to get them until this was resolved.  He bent down slightly, letting Tim climb onto his back before he scooped Cass up and they flew to Titans Tower.
________
Marinette paced around the room like a caged animal.  There was so much that could go wrong, and she was stuck here unable to do anything.  Cassie and Bart watched her with concerned eyes.  Kon had only given them the briefest rundown of everything, saying that this was “a friend of Tim” and that he had asked for him to bring her here.
“She doesn't seem very crash.”
Bart stage whispered as he snacked on a bag of potato chips.  Cassie rolled her eyes at her friend,
“No, she doesn’t.”
Marinette wasn’t paying attention to their words though, she wasn’t even aware that they were talking.  All she could do was listen to the thoughts in her mind telling her that something bad would happen and it would be all her fault.  That because she was gone she would not be able to help or save her people if there was an attack which would make her the worst and most useless hero in the world!  Then she would lose her Miraculous, Chat would demand that she pass on the guardianship because of how irresponsible she was, Tim would abandon her when he realized how useless of a sister she was and-
Warm arms wrapped around her causing her racing mind to pause.
“I need you to breathe Mars, I know you’re scared, but everything is going to be okay.”
Marinette sucked in a deep breath, she wasn’t even aware of how shallow they had been, but now that she thought about it she had been seeing small black dots in the corner of her vision.
“That’s it, you’re doing so good now.  I’d never leave you Marinette, you and the others, you’re the last bit of family I have left.  Even if you weren't, you're still my sister, and that means everything to me.”
Tears welled up in her eyes, but she needed to fight them back, she couldn’t have strong emotions, those emotions would attract,
“It’s okay to cry now.  You’re not in Paris, if you need to cry I’m right here.”
She heard a door slide closed behind her, they were moving.  When had they even started moving?  Her body was gently moved down and she could feel herself sitting on her brother’s lap, her head resting against his chest letting her hear the steady beating of his heart.
Thump thump,
Thump thump,
Thump thump.
It was a steady rhythm, soothing in more ways than one.  Gentle fingers brushed through her hair and the dam broke as tears fell down her cheeks and sobs wracked her body.  It wasn’t fair.  She had done everything right, she was kind, patient, tried her best not to cause a scene, she forgave others, she helped them even when they didn’t like her, she had done everything right!  So why did they all hate her then?  What had she done, what was so bad about her, what did she do to make others hate her so much?!
“You didn’t do anything.  It’s all on them, you are so good Marinette, far too good.  They don’t deserve you, I don’t deserve you.  But we’re going to get through this, we’re going to do it together.  I’m not going to leave you to suffer on your own, I’ll stand by you, I’ll be your shoulder as long as you need me.”
Marinette clutched onto her brother, letting her hands fist around shirt.  Marinette didn’t know how long they were there, how long she spent ruining his shirt with her tears and snot, it could have been a few hours, minutes, even a day.  Despite that fact, Tim never once left her, always either rubbing her back, running fingers through her hair, humming, whispering comforting words, and just being the comforting presence that she needed.  It made her heart warm and helped to silence the sobs and slow the tears.  Tim loved her, he was here for.  She had Adrien, Chloe, Kagami, Luka, and her parents too.  She wasn’t alone.  Marinette slowly lifted her gaze to stare at her brother where he gave her the softest most loving smile she’d ever seen on him.
“You feelinging any better?”
He asked.  Marinette nodded, wiping the tears away with the back of her hand.  Tim leaned backwards and grabbed a box of tissues from some corner of the room they were in.
“Thank you.”
She whispered hoarsely, using the tissues to wipe her eyes and a few more to wipe her nose.  Now that she was thinking a little clearer she began to look around the room.  A mess would be an understatement, but a pigsty would be an overstatement as well.  She could tell it was a form of organized chaos, papers scattered across the floor, boards covering each of the walls with red strings wrapped around them, pens were scattered everywhere on the desk as well as stacks of manila folders filled to bursting with different papers, and when she looked up there was another board up there, this one was empty though, which was strange.  It kind of looked like her room, except it was mostly paper rather than bolts and scraps of fabric.
“Is this your room?”
She asked, sniffling slightly.  Tim blushed a little in embarrassment as he too looked around his room.
“Yea.  It probably looked a lot worse before.  I have no doubt that one of them was nice enough to clear out all of the trash and coffee mugs.  I’ll be doing the dishes for a month.”
He replied, grumbling the last sentence.  Marinette let out a small hum, leaning into the warmth that was her brother.  So who are your friends?  Tim smiled at that before he let out a long sigh.
“The one that took us here was Kon, he’s the one that we saved from that lab I told you about.  The blonde is Cassandra Sandsmark , though we call her Cassie.  She’s an Amazionian fighter, Wonder Woman’s sidekick, I think you too would get along really well.  Probably too well.”
He mumbled.  Clearing his throat he continued,
“The last one, the one who’s going to absolutely talk your ear off, is Bart.  He’s a speedster from an apocalyptic future that is living here.  So if he says something you don’t know or understand, there’s a high chance we don’t know either.”
Marinette giggled at that, causing time to smile as well.
“Your-er, Mom,”
She snickered again causing him to roll his eyes.
“Mom told me to let you know that she is going to try to transfer you to Kagami’s school.  She’s probably already called her by now to ask her about scholarships and admissions.  I’ll help of course, you deserve the best.”
Marinette sniffled again at that.  She would be leaving her old school then.  It wasn’t technically a bad thing, but it was still a foreign concept in her mind.  That she would be able to leave and escape the cruelty there.  She still had two years of school left and she had a feeling that they would be well spent at Kagami’s school, even if she did have to wear a uniform.  She had once asked Tim why he wasn’t in school, she had learned that he had actually skipped three grades and instead of graduating, like he should have, got an online GED.  He said that it didn’t matter to him since he “was running Bruce’s company before he even graduated”.  Sabine and Marinette had not been thrilled to hear that.
“Can I meet your friends?”
Tim smiled at that, he knew she was just trying to change the subject but he would let it go.  She deserved a break anyways.
“Yea, I can also get you some water since they’ll probably be in or near the kitchen anyways.”
With that marinette slowly stood up, Tim followed after her though he stretched his legs first before he opened his door and began his tour of his home-away-from-home.
__________
Tim watched from the sidelines with a smile as he watched his friends/family talk with Marinette.  He had no doubt that they would all get along, but it was still a relief and a weight off his shoulders to truly see it happening.  He watched Kon whisper something in her ear, Marinette glanced at him for a second and Tim felt nervous.  The next thing he knew Marinette burst out laughing and Tim was blushing despite the fact that he had no idea what was said.  He glanced over at Kon to see if he could get a hint of whatever story he was telling but only got a sly smirk and sideways glances from a chuckling Cassie.  He didn’t know if he wanted to know what story they told her.  They had so many stories, most of which he didn’t even remember due to his sleep deprived state that it was frankly concerning.  For him at least, they seem to enjoy holding these stories over his head whenever they need something.
Slowly, Tim approached the group, his family, and hesitantly asked,
“What exactly did I miss?”
Kon shook his head and placed a finger to his lips, smug smirk still firmly in place.  Marinette’s eyes glittered with mirth as she followed suit and shook her head.
“Sorry Tim-Tam, can’t say.”
“And why not?”
He asked, crossing his arms and lifting a brow to look at all of his team members.  Bart zipped right next to him, causing a small breeze in the room before rushing out,
“It’s a secret story.  Maybe one day you’ll be able to find a way to unlock it in one of your side quests.”
Cassie snickered as Tim pouted.  He honestly hadn’t played one of his open world adventure games in a while.  He mostly played any version of UMS with Marinette and her their family. Tim sighed, dropping his hands to his side casually enough as Bart placed an arm around his shoulders.  He could tell that there was some sort of trap here, they were holding out on something but he couldn’t tell what yet.  The kitchen was clean (that was a first); Kon, Cass, and Cassie were all gathered near Mari; and there was nothing that could be considered suspicious on the counters.  There was just a bag of flour, one on his side of the counter and one in hers.
…….
Oh no.  Tim could tell that Marinette knew that he figured out what she planned to do.  So with almost inhuman speed she lord the bag and threw a handful of it at Tim.  He quickly closed his eyes as the dusted wheat hit him square in the face.  Quickly reaching for his own bag he began to throw flour at her, only missing and hitting Cassie instead.  The fight went on for a while, everyone getting involved until they were all white as ghosts.  Marinette and everyone else was laughing, he knew that this was her idea. Probably revenge for the last time he initiated this same kind of fight.  It was worth it though.  She was happy, she wasn’t worried about a thing, and hopefully she can accept his friends.  Let them be a part of their small found family.  Tim never liked standing on the sidelines before.  But just watching her, seeing her happy like this even if it wasn’t fully him that made her smile like that.  Maybe he could make an exception for his dislike, but only if he could see her like this more often.

[11/?]
original prompt | complete masterlist
It has backfired on her.
Now her siblings are competing to earn her favor, plaguing her with their own vigilante alter egos.
"Look what I've got, Mari!" Dick calls out, bringing a dusty box to the couch.
She tilts her head as she looks up from her sketchbook.
"I found some Nightwing merch you might like." Dick preens. "You know, just in case you change your mind about your favorite vigilante."
She raises an eyebrow and looks into the box. Tumblers, caps, ballers, shirts, pins, stickers, keychains, bracelets. All in the theme of Nightwing. She refrains from asking why he has merchandise of himself.
Marinette gives a strained smile. "I understand that you're a fan and all, but I really don't get the appeal."
He makes a face. "You can take at least one."
She sighs and goes through the pile before digging out a Nightwing hoodie that looks comfy.
---
She thinks Jason won't care too much about being hailed the favorite but she's proven absolutely wrong. During one chat with him, he manages to slip it in the conversation.
"And then I told her that my sister makes better slippers!" Jason grins.
"You didn't!" She laughs.
"Speaking of that shop, apparently Red Hood fought off some thugs for the old lady." Jason takes a swig of his drink. "And he even threatened them not to go back!"
"Thats . . . that's cool."
"Right? He looks big and scary but he has a heart inside."
"Oh?"
"Yeah, and he helps out a lot of street kids too." He hastily adds: "I just heard about it."
---
Tim's approach is more passive-aggressive.
One morning when Marinette slips into the kitchen to make her coffee, she sees a rubber duck wedged between the coffee press and the cream. And it's not just a rubber duck. It's a rubber duck dressed as Red Robin.
The ducks follow her everywhere.
She catches one near her sewing machine, one pinned near a window where she usually works, another next to her baking supplies, inside her shoe, on her laptop. She only collects the ducks and makes them line up in her room.
But that's not all.
Themed advertisements begin to pop up whenever she uses her phone or laptop. The Red Robin symbol flickers every now and then at the corner of her screen.
Marinette frowns upon seeing another duck inside her purse. Damn your psychological harassment.
---
Damian is the most annoying one.
He springs out of nowhere and pops out a surprise attack whenever she's doing something. If Marinette's playing UMS Online, he'll stand in front of her screen and say, "Robin uses an awesome katana."
To which she replies, "Go away! I'm losing!"
He'll sit beside her during meals and state in a casual tone: "He has the best fighting skills out of all the others."
And she'll glower. "Not in front of my croissants, Damian."
He'll also accidentally 'run into' her whenever she's outside the manor. "It has come to my attention that he wants to cease being too much of an edgelord."
She'll walk past him. "Good thing to know."
What's worse is that Damian seems set on maintaining his 'favorite' status and is actively trying to sabotage the others' attempts.
When Marinette decides to slip on the Nightwing hoodie, she finds a Robin sticker stapled on top of the Nightwing logo.
Whenever Jason comes over and talks to her, Damian interrupts and the boys get into an argument.
Even the ducks aren't safe. Marinette sees a few re-dressed in a Robin getup.
Finally, after getting fed up with their stupid antics, she decides to end the war once and for all.
---
Bonus
Marinette taps her stylus on her tablet. The crossword puzzle sits unfinished on the screen.
She squints. "Seven letter word for best vigilante in Gotham?"
Stephanie raises her hand. "SPOILER!"
Duke perks up. "THE SIGNAL!"
"Duke, that's nine letters."
"Oh."
Marinette looks back at the description list. "Oops, it's actually six letters. My bad."
Cass smiles. "Orphan."

F7 and G7 for Winnie and Bela :p
C8 - Mary
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Melony's slow decent into Power Madness is my favourite thing. Get them baby you deserve it. (Cass is going to lick that blood off for her later)
Meanwhile: Eldest siblings bitch about their sisters and discuss the best method of torture for disrespectful teenagers/servants.
And finally: Sarah stole Mary's Clark Bar.

Was telling @alexmaybe the other day about my delightful realization that while Cass & Jason’s several month age gap means they can’t both be Shiva’s kid, there is enough of an age gap between Cass and Tim that they could be siblings. And that we have no idea when Willis Todd got Shiva’s contact info, so you can just daisy-chain the half-sibs of Cass & Tim sharing a bio-mom and Tim & Jason sharing a bio dad.
This resulted in us brainstorming lots of other “So-and-so’s bio parents is actually...” AU’s. Enjoy.
~
1. Shiva had a second kid after she had Cass, adopting the baby out to a “normal” family to compare how the two turn out. You know, for science. That kid is Tim. The bio dad is:
A. Willis Todd, so Tim is half-sibs to the two Bats on the most polar opposite sides of the “is killing okay” spectrum.
B. Ra’s, making Tim Talia’s half-brother and Damian’s uncle.
~
2. Dick time traveled and is the bio dad of:
A. Tim: Dick never met Janet before, why would he recognize her?
B. One of the Kents: there’s a grainy photo of Dick in Clark’s glasses, because he had them in his pocket when the time travel happened, and that photo later inspired Clark to try glasses as a disguise,
C. Talia: Ra’s is still her other bio dad, Dick had some clone machine blueprints in his pocket too, which Ra’s promptly stole along with his blood,
D. Bruce: Martha and Thomas were friends, not dating or engaged, when Martha found herself in a family way, and Thomas was game to help his friend legitimize her baby,
E. All of the above.
~
3. Ra’s is Dick’s biological father because John & Mary Grayson had a very adventurous summer. Ra’s has known the whole time, and is frankly a bit disappointed in Dick for not killing Tony Zucco (Ra’s refrained from killing the murderer of his lovers himself because sons have first dibs on vengeance).
Dick is unhappy about being related to Ra’s and Talia (and learning that both his parents had sex with Ra’s, ew ew ew), Talia isn’t too happy either, but Damian is thrilled to have a blood connection to Dick.
~
4. Talia is Dick’s biological mother via time travel. He is both her second born and eldest son.
~
5. Bruce is Tim’s biological father, also via time travel. Look, he did a routine gene test on Tim and discovered their degree of relation, but knew for a fact he had never slept with Janet Drake. Kept an eye out for time travel shenanigans, and when they struck, made sure to seek Janet out and father Tim. Tim is happy to exist but feels very weird about this.
~
6. Talia is Tim’s second mom (maybe via time travel, I’m unsure of her age). Maybe Talia is transgender, maybe she’s cis but the Lazarus Pits just do a swapsies sometimes. It happens!
~
7. Damian is Tim’s bio father via time travel. Tim gives him so much shit for trying to kill him while spouting ‘true blood son’ bullshit. Bruce bluescreens at the realization he has technically been a grandfather longer than he’s been a father.

* A small snip into the future while a go writting Jason's time with Verena. This will have spoilers for her love interest*
Tumblr media
A Mothers Return
The quiet sound of a far off water dripping off a stalagmite. The batfamily was all down in the batcave but, not for patrol or a villain out break. Verena had called early informing Bruce that his high school fling had returned from the dead. Now everyone was in the cave watching the shit storm happen, but with a turn of evens it wasn't with who they thought it would be with.
" You told the brotherhood about my plan?"
Verena looked baffled at her mother. The woman in questioned sighed while pushing her short hair back.
"They have access to things we need Verena. I made a dissison. We need them"
"They tortured me for weeks on end! How can you trust them? What is so important that you need you can't get here?"
The older woman looked at her daughter then at Bruce, who stood next to his lover Selene Kyle. The awkward feel filled the air. This caused Verena to scoff.
"You can't be serious. You are jealous of them? Ignore them! I need you to be a mom for once in your life!"
Mary glared at her daughter. Verena glared right back. Her siblings all tensed at the glare her older sister gave.
"I'm playing catch up in a race I feel like I am leagues behind Verena. I'm not just a mom!"
Mary took a step forward looking up at her daughter who stood on the steps up to the batcave. In a condescending tone, Mary spoke again.
"You are not a child"
A pain like no other rushed through Verena. As Jason and Dick moved to hurt the woman who hurt there older sister. Tim and Damian held back the older siblings while glaring at the woman. Cass and Duke flanked Verena so she had some type of backup. The sound of sand could be heard. Cass and Duke turned around to see the King of Dreams appear behind them.
"I never was. So if we are done here, there is the door Alfred can show you out. I'm busy fixing the mistake you made Mary."
Verena turned her back to her mother who looked like she was just stabbed. Alfred gently but, firmly escorted the older woman away. Verena looked up at the taller and paler man. A tear escaped past her, gently falling. Before it could meet the ground Morpheus gently grasped her face. His thumb getting rid of the tear, before they both disappeared to the Dreaming.
"I do request you never come to the manor again."
Alfred said while opening the front door for Mary. Mary scoffed while walking out.
"By order of the batman I guess."
" No by my order. You hurt my Granddaughter. While Bruce has a no killing rule, I do not follow such rule. Please keep that in mind."

So i’ve unofficially called the last 12 months/year “the year i watched supernatural” because honesty it’s just a better way to face the last 12 months. Anyway here’s my unrequested thoughts on supernatural.
It helped heal my religious trauma lol. (also spoilers)
Things i LOVED
The sibling trope/dynamic from the first couple seasons. Whenever they put cosmic importance on siblings i ate that shit up. That’s so fun.
The vessel sagas. See above but Michael possessing Dean to kill Lucifer who’s possessing Sam??? Fucking love it. That’s so great. Also trying to force (aka torture) sam to accept Lucifer? Fantastic.
The canonical answer that ‘god likes Sam and Dean so he gives them stupid hero luck”. I love that. That they didn’t get flat tires or sick or whatever while he liked them because he was watching out for their lactose intolerant asses.
The SCOOBY DOO EPISODE. ENOUGH SAID AMAZING I LOVE
The yellowed eye man plot. I know it’s like the first one but GOD i love everything about that arc. Sam’s visions?? The episode where the demon transports a bunch of them to test them?? Hell yeah
All the possessions. They were so fun.
ALL THE EXPERIMENTAL WEIRD EPISODES. Like when they’re just office coworkers?? When they go to our world? That’s so fucking fun.
That one scene when Crowley tortures that one pizza delivery angel? Fuck those are the best whumperflies in visusal format for me. Hell yeah.
Things i liked
Cass teleporting so randomly.
The idea that humans made ‘gods’ like the old gods because wanted something to worship. Nice i like that take.
“Squirrel and Moose” as nicknames.
Demon traps and the little tattoos that keep them from being possessed. Very visual symbols. Also the black eye blink. Iconic.
Bobby
The bunker (not the men of letters… just the bunker)
How they used the same motel set and just changed the wallpaper and the room divider. I missed the hotel rooms.
Garth
Sam’s health conscious streak
Nick as lucifer was so fun to watch. I was genuinely a bit sad when lucifer was possessing someone else/died.
The gate to heaven is in a children’s playground. That’s funny, it feels irreverent, love it.
Prophets. I like the prophets.
GHOSTFACERS
Don’t kill me i think i liked the last episode
Things i hated/didn’t like
The steins. Oh my god i had to stop watching. God we understand. We got it. Please don’t spell it out like that it hurt to watch
The men of letters as legacy. They should have just found the bunker and been like “this is mine now”. The men of letters as a thing? Meh okay fine.
Rowena never fully grew on me. Her accent sounded so fake the entire time i was half expecting her to drop it one day and be like “oh it was for fun”
Oz. God, just stick to the bible.
The needless double casting. Specifically chuck being god. I like chuck as a prophet, i love that they fought god, but chuck being god? Stupid. Annoying. Damaged the plot of the show. Should have just cast another dude to play god.
The parallel universes. Meh leave it
The episode in the girls highschool where they made a supernatural play. I had to skip that episode too cringy
Sam’s beard
The Campbell family was DUMB. Dumb and made no sense.
Cass in “the empty”.... Just… what. If felt rushed and wrong and maybe it didn’t even stick?? IDK just weird and bad.
The mark of cain was tiring. Okay concept but tiring and non too interesting.
Mary coming back. That was weird.
The british men of letters
Sam in old man wig
Overall more things i enjoyed than hated but that is because im a positive little son of a bitch. Anyway rating is like 8/10 if you know what you’re getting into.
Anyway time to start watching season one again.

New(ish) Comics - we’re going to start some catch up editions.
Shazam! #2: hahaha SPACE PAPERWORK. Psycho Pirate? PSYCHO PIRATE? Look it’s Mr “the only thing anyone cares about me is that I remember COIE” himself! (Does he still remember? Has any further retcon destroyed the one thing that made him interesting?)
“did you lose your temper because of Mister Mind?” Look this is a valid question. This plus the Freddy stuff is practically the same plot as the middle section of Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam! and it WAS Mister Mind that time, so…
Knight Terrors: Shazam! #2: gotta say I’m glad I gave in to this Knight Terrors as it’s mostly about Mary, and Mary is my girl ❤ She’s such a big sister and she’s out here saving her siblings. It’s! About! Family! Also contrariwise to what a lot of people have been saying about the Knight Terrors stuff, this is actually pretty solidly a sequel to Mary’s ongoing storyline for the past year or so. Given Waid’s on the writing though, I’m not shocked he’s used it to actually further plot and resolve tensions.
Spirit World #2-4: Cass!!!
Ooooh. OOOOOH. Everyone’s already commented on the portrayal of deadnaming, so I’ll just note it’s fascinating to see the discussion of identity tied up in a discussion of being dead/what you take with you/what remains behind. (Chrysanthemum portal!!)
Tumblr media
“Less fighting…more fighting” That’s my Cass!!!
I already went into exhaustive detail about my feelings over Cass’ deaths being recanonised, and gotta say I’m happy it’s happened.
I'm really liking how they're using Xanthe, Constantine and Cass's different power sets together through this.
Also the art is reliably stunning but that fox spirit... wow.

Fics in the works
 Updated 04/2023
Hey I know its been a while since I’ve properly published new fics. Honestly  keep coming up with ideas but actually finishing them is the kicker.
Ngl I honestly feel like I need some betas for the works I’ve got going on and if any of these interest you then by all means feel free to message me! And yes some of these are still Maribat
The Winner Takes The Crown (Princess)
Got into DPxDC and decided to take a crack at it. As usual this thing was supposed to be a one-shot but is 18.9k words so far and counting so three-shot is more likely.
Tags: Tim Drake & Dick Grayson, Dick Grayson & Jason Todd, Kon-El | Conner Kent & Danielle "Dani" Phantom, Danielle "Dani" Phantom/Kon-El | Conner Kent, Danny Fenton/Jason Todd
Summary: When members of the Team get sent out to scout an inconspicuous town in Indonesia with supposed hauntings and missing teens on the night of an eclipse surely nothing could go wrong, right?Meanwhile the Ghost King got tired of every old timey ghost royalty trying to get their hands on his little sister/cousin/clone and got an idea. Why not have them duke it out amongst each other for once. It'd be entertaining at the very least or a disaster waiting to happen at most--- at least that's what his newly appointed Fright Knight thought anyway
Chapters out so far: 1/3 AO3  Part 1
Who The Wayne Are You?!
Why not do a fusion of two crossover fandoms??? (Not sure if I’ll include any romantic ships)
Tags: Marinette Dupain-Cheng & Danny Fenton, Marinette Dupain-Cheng & Bruce Wayne, Danny Fenton & Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake & Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Tim Drake & Danny Fenton, Danny Fenton & Jason Todd, Marinette Dupain-Cheng & Jason Todd, Cassandra Cain & Danny Fenton, Cassandra Cain & Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Misunderstandings, Mistaken Identities
Summary: Its just her luck that on her first day in Gotham City, the literally cursed crime capital of the world that she gets kidnapped. To make matters worst her kidnappers must be blind because they think she’s Cass Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s only daughter, who doesn’t even have blue eyes! Fortunately or unfortunately she’s not the only one in this dilemma--- He was sure that the spirit of Gotham had it out for him; the moment his sister left to go on the tour to Gotham U he gets pushed into a white van (cliché much?). On the bright side it wasn’t the Guys In White, down side the idiots can’t seem to agree if he’s Tim Drake, co-CEO of Wayne Enterprises, or Jason Todd, supposedly dead son of Bruce Wayne (he’s not sure if that’s quite true). Well at least he’s got company. “Ugh just my luck that I get kidnapped literally on my first day in Gotham” “Oh samesie”

Tales of Ladyluck and Jinx: Twins Extraordinaire (Wrk ttl)
I mean c’mon the potential for bio siblings Tim and Mari is right there.
Tags: Tim Drake & Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Tim Drake & Bridgette Dupain-Cheng, Bridgette Dupain-Cheng & Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Tim Drake & Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake & Dick Grayson, Jack Drake & Tim Drake, Jack Drake & Marinette-Dupain-Cheng, Sabine Cheng/Tom Dupain, Sabine Cheng & Tim Drake, Sabine Cheng & Jack Drake, Jack Drake/Janet Drake, Bad Parents Jack/Janet Drake, Dead Janet Drake, Jack Drake Knows Tim is Robin, Does Not Approve, Surrogate Sabine, Fraternal Twins Tim and Mari, Jack Drake tries to be better, in the end, Bridgette Dupain-Cheng/ Felix Culpa, Quantic Kids
Summary: Tim Drake’s 12 year old, almost but not yet 13, life was falling apart right before his very eyes and there was nothing he could do to stop it. His mother was dead and his father was paralyzed. To make matters worse his father found out about Robin and was vehemently against it; so much so that he was sending Tim away. Turns out Janet Drake wasn’t his biological mother, his parents had used a surrogate. A woman named Sabine Cheng who lived in Paris alongside her husband and daughters. Turns out Tim was a twin; his parents only wanted the son.
As much as he wants to hate this new family he can’t help but crave the affection they provide, the warmth and comfort , that his parents never could. As much as Tim would miss being Robin he had Mari and that was enough. Who knows maybe he’d go back to the Life later on in life?

Royal Flush
(Paused)
I’ve been really loving these HBIC Marinette stories and decided to try my own out with a fun Maribat twist!
Tags: Marinette Dupain-Cheng & Chloe Bourgeois & Nathaniel Kutzberg, Damian Wayne & Jon Kent, Jessica Keynes & Aeon Hill
Summary: For this year’s French-American Friendship Day it was the American's turn to visit and what a lucky coincidence and totally not tampered with by any of the Bats that Gotham Academy was chosen with newly re-enrolled Damian Wayne and recent transfers Jonathan Kent, Jessica Keynes and Aeon Hill. Jess was excited to reunite with her fellow Guardian only... things were different with the Parisians? She couldn’t really explain it but it seemed strange that the students were adorned with symbols; Red Hearts, Yellow Diamonds, Green Clovers and Blue Spades. What did this all mean and why were those without them ostracized? Was this also why Marinette seemed to have a whole wardrobe change and was now friends with mean girl Chloe?
Well it was up to Jess and reluctantly Damian to find out what was the root of the problem alongside sunshine duo Jon and Aeon, also known as the Seasonal Court while also trying to figure out how to offer their help with the Hawkmoth situation.

Violet Gold (Working Title)
(Still working on it)
Tags: Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Luka Couffaine/Tim Drake, Adrien Agreste/Conner Kent, Juleka Couffaine/Stephanie Brown, Bart Allen/Jaime Reyes, Kagami Tsurugi & Cassie Sandsmark, Miraculous Team, Young Justice, Soulmate AU
Summary: After a heartbroken meta akuma unleashes her untapped power on all of Paris the citizens all get scatter across the world--- heroes included! While Tygress finds herself mildly concussed and not so alone in a technologically advanced cave with a shadow like girl who intimidating the ever-loving hell out of her and a beautiful amazon who looked badass and like she could kick her ass, even after her recent heartbreak with Rose she felt her heart skip a beat. That’s when she noticed the glowing red band around both their arms. It turns out her fellow heroes were teleported to the same location, each bonding with different teen heroes; Ladybug and Viperion with a red caped black haired hero she didn’t know. As they’d learn the Akuma took them to their soulmates. Journey as these teen caped and non-caped crusaders learn about their ‘soulmates’ and about themselves. All in the name of Love.
Chapter count: 7 (Chapter 1 partially complete)
War (Working Title)
(Still Working on it)
Tags: Bio dad Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne & Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Miraculous Team, Bat Boys, Bat Girls, Marinette stopped taking shit, salt fic
Summary; Not a Dupain. Not Wanted. Those two phrases echoed in Marinette’s head as she robotically made her way up the stairs after having her world turned. Marinette was not Thomas Dupain’s biological daughter, not only that but her parent’s had enough of her ‘problematic’ behavior and were sending her away to live with her actual father, a man who, after looking him up online, turned out to be billionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne of Wayne Enterprise. Now she must leave her friends behind and move in with complete strangers while juggling her Guardian duties and hero life. Well one thing was for sure; she was done being a pushover. Done being a perfect example and ready to start anew. Gone was Marinette Dupain-Cheng, here comes Marinette Wayne!
Chapter count; 1 (its gonna be a long one-shot)
C’est la vie
(Paused)
Tags; Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Dick Grayson, Dick Grayson & Wally West, Dick Grayson & Kor’iander, Dick Grayson/Kor’iander, Tim Drake & Jason Todd, Tim Drake & Conner Kent, Conner Kent/Adrien Agreste, Felix Graham de Venily & Adrien Agreste, Bart Allen & Alix Kubdel, Mal Duncan & Alix Kubdel (more to come)
Summary; (Continuation of Staying Whelmed & Erable AU) Its been two years since the cease of the Parisian heroes. Everyone still  mourns their loss but its time to move on. At least that’s what Dick keeps telling himself, he’s put off being on the team long enough and missed enough family dinners. Honestly he can’t even remember the last time he properly talked to some of his friends, the kwami doing a well enough job of keeping him from completely going off the deep end. With the help of the recently rescued princess Kor’iander of Tamarand he think he’s getting there. Tim on the other hand notices the imbalance of the world; the way certain creatures’ populations have significantly dwindled down, the way the magic users have been losing power, the increase of natural disasters and sudden reappearance of what they believed to be Trixx’s original temple... He can’t help but hope. Hope to regain his brother and fellow heroes, to bring back hope and restore the world’s balance.  After encounters with others in the community he realizes that he’s not the only one that noticed. Now all he needs to do is convince the others that he’s not in denial and isn’t embarking some fruitless endeavor. Well no one said it’d be easy to enter the In-Between

DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #7 brought in the Cass, and well I gotta be fully honest and give my thoughts on the issue.
Now to start off, the moment the preview to this issue hit. I was worrying. I felt like this was gonna be the one where Cass (and Mary) were gonna bite it. I mean Undead Gods vs. living ones? Usually doesn't go well.
I mean for Mxy and Spectre, Anti-Life Darkseid still infected one and the other killed the host. Still, the Spectre endured (and what a twist that was). But I figured someone in the Bat-Family was gonna bite it. Damian was the red flag but Cass was the second.
I'm kind of surprised really writer Tom Taylor excels at making you care and getting you on the edge of your seat. Making you 😱😱😱that a character is gonna bite it. Sometimes they do. But when they don't the payoffs are so rich.
This being a good one as all hell is breaking loose. We have two Supermen doing the best they can against these impossible odds fighting the Anti-Life army both current and newly infected. But when they have to do other things. Other characters step up.
Tumblr media
I like that Taylor specifically had the three female characters who been thru A LOT in the past series (Dinah, Mary, and Cass) are the ones to beat Anti-Life Darkseid. There's just so much reward for longtime readers.
The payoffs for Dinah getting the ring, Mary getting Cass/Shiva's training, and Cass still being so pure so she can attain the powers of Wizard Shazam's staff.  There's so much full circle here at this point.
Like that's always my takeaway from these series by Taylor: I want more.
I know he's said this is it but damn if I don't want more stories in between this and other DCeased stories.
I mean for Cass there's a story I feel just aching to be told of her losing everyone being distant with Alfred/Damian (given the years), finding out about Steph, bonding with Mary, losing Babs/Shiva, and then finding out about the cure.
Killing all those lives would tax Cass's soul. Which just adds to the pure of heart detail Taylor had. Again, it shows why Taylor just is so good at these stories. Cause you're always left craving more.
I do feel if there's a spinoff again for this "Elseworlds" or "franchise" that Cass/Mary have to be a story told. Because the two have lost so much. Yet still remain pure and themselves.
Plus I'm good with a good heartwarming Rose/Jim moment with her too. Cause I feel those two along with Mary are bonds that Cass would be friends with more. Akin to Damian/Jon/Cassie.
That's just the Cass portion. I mean I'm still hoping one day we get a conclusion to the Talia/Steph subplot. The seemingly only loose plot thread left with one issue to go.
I mean that could even be the crux of this spinoff series. Cass/Damian searching for Talia/Steph. Picking up clues while battling the Anti-Life. Making up for that lost time. Being the only two siblings left.
Again, just the story writes itself. But I digress I get it. Taylor has delivered five banger series from this line. It's just that he's so good at this again, leaving me wanting more. 😝
But yeah, I'm really curious to see how this all ends and if Cass will get a moment or something in the final issue. Will she be a final survivor or not? Not to mention how is this gonna end?
I have so many questions and the fact going in this not being as predictable again is a credit to Taylor. I haven't a clue where this is going and the fact you don't just adds to the fun in reading a story like this.
Though I digress I was so taken with the story I didn't even notice the lack of bat ears on Cass at the end. 😝 I was so focused on her smacking Darkseid around going, "YOU GO!" Along with hearing "the Touch" in my head (aka the song for when things turn for the good guys).
Tumblr media
I'll just chalk it to Darkseid blasting her bat ears off the fiend. He blew her ears off man. Her pointy bat ears off! DARKSEID IS TRULY EVIL!!!
But yeah this issue had so many payoffs. Not just the female trio, but also with Jon, Damian, and Cyborg too. All the heroes throughout this series got this payoff.
This is why I love this series. It rewards long-time readers with these moments. And again I'm really curious to see where the series goes in this finale.
Great. Now I can't help but just think about a Ghost Shiva giving Cass a thumbs up and admitting this is the song I hear anytime Cass does something awesome in this series now. 😝

Shots Fired Pt4
Beginning   Previous
“We’re sorry.” Sabine pulled back and made him look her in the eye. “I just wanted to keep you from thinking what other people said about you was true. I didn’t realize we were taking it so far.” Adrien could only stare at her for a moment. The last thing he expected was an apology.
“It’s okay.” Her look hardened.
“No, it’s not. I’m more upset that we didn’t notice how we were affecting you than anything else. I’m too used to the way Tom and Marinette catastrophize every little thing. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to look for more subtle signs.”
“We are not that bad.” Sabine gave Mari a level look and Cass just rolled her eyes.
“Remind me, who was it that spent three weeks holed up in their room because of one bad review?” Mari sputtered out a denial, but no one there believed her. Not even Jason, if his amused look was anything to go by. Adrien vividly remembered the time Sabine was talking about. It was before they’d taken down his father, so he had no idea she was Ladybug at the time, but he’d noticed Marinette missing from class and had stopped by to check on her as Chat. That was an eye-opening visit. She’d ranted about everything to do with her designing, so he’d found out about both her business and the fact that she was the one who made his favorite scarf.
That was the beginning of their real friendship outside the mask. Knowing what she had done, and hadn’t done, just because she wanted him to be happy made him realize how much he needed that in his life. It was awkward at first, since neither of them had any idea how to go about getting closer. It also took a few months after that for him to realize that she had a crush on him. Once they addressed that and settled into their sibling bond, they were inseparable. It was another proof of how amazing she was that when he said he didn’t have romantic feelings for her that she’d backed off entirely. The one time they’d talked about it afterward, before the reveal, had made him realize that the feelings she’d had for him were surface level, and exactly the same as his feelings for Ladybug. He’d apologized profusely to her very confused partner the next time they were on patrol. It was something they still laughed about.
“Adrien, I know you’ve been hesitant, but I really think we should find you a therapist.” Sabine’s soft voice pulled him back to the present, and he shot a panicked look at Mari. She was frowning in thought, but didn’t immediately shoot down the idea, which worried him. With all the secrets they had, seeing a therapist was an accident waiting to happen. Not to mention it would be hell to find one that wasn’t immediately prejudiced against him because of his father. Well, unless they looked outside the country, or possibly even Europe.
“I’m happy with the way things are.” The looks he was getting called him a liar, but he thought it was the truth. The people that mattered were there for him and really, how much use would therapy be if he was too stressed about letting things slip for it to be effective? No, things were fine the way they were.
“We’ll table this discussion for now, but I think it’s worth talking about more.” Mari’s words got Sabine to drop the topic, but it meant that she was going to try to talk him into it later. At least he had his arguments ready. Cass and Jason seemed to be having a silent discussion with their eyes that was honestly a bit creepy. When it ended, Jason slipped a business card into his hand without Mari or Sabine noticing. He looked at it when they moved to clean up. It was just a phone number with the name Harleen Quinzel. He raised a questioning eyebrow at Jason. Once the girls were out of earshot, he spoke softly.
“She won’t judge you for who your father was, or even anything you may have done in the past. Most of us have talked to her at least informally and it helps. She’s unorthodox, but she really does care.” Adrien felt himself choke up a bit at the kindness. It had been a long time since anyone outside his adopted family or company had treated him like a person.
“I’ll think about it. Thank you.” Jason just nodded. It was nice to have someone that didn’t push. “So, how long are you going to be in Paris?” The words came out without his consent, and Adrien winced when he realized how stupid he sounded.
“Plans aren’t firm, but as long as your sister keeps freezing out Timmy and Dick, I’d say I’ll be around a while. I’m certainly not in a rush to get back to Gotham.” Adrien hoped his smile didn’t change too much, as he felt giddy at the prospect of getting to know Jason better. He was so screwed. Jason got an evil smirk on his face. “You know what would really drive them and Bruce up the wall?”
“What?” He was impressed he answered. That expression was dangerous.
“If I hung out at your place and got them zero information on you.” Adrien actually felt his brain come to a screeching halt. Both because of the thought of them hanging out alone, and the fact that he didn’t technically have a ‘place’.
“Yeah, I’m kinda staying at the company at the moment, but don’t tell Mari or Sabine, please. They’ll insist I move in here or with Mari at her apartment, but I don’t want to put them in even more danger.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, the last place I lived was set on fire and I they didn’t catch who did it, so I’d rather not risk staying somewhere without security. I also hired a private security firm to look after the Bakery and Mari’s apartment building because they aren’t taking the threat seriously. But Mari and her parents are under the impression that I rented an apartment under and assumed name to avoid issues.” Jason looked pissed. “It’s okay though. The basement used to be a staff break area, so there are actually showers and a kitchenette area. It’s more comfortable than it sounds.” The look he was getting said Jason thought he was an idiot.
“That’s not the point. The fact that you have to hide out because you’re being targeted is the problem. What are the police doing about it?” Adrien blinked at him. Did he really think the police cared about the safety of a terrorist’s son? Something of his thoughts must have shown on his face, because Jason started cursing. Some of it he didn’t understand. Must be American slang or something.
“I’ll get Babs to look into it.” Adrien raised an eyebrow at him. “She’s like family, but she’s not, and she’ll be happy to do this behind Bruce’s back if I ask her. Her dad’s a police commissioner, so she’s grown up around this stuff. She’ll know what to look for.” Adrien felt a tightness in his chest. It had been so long since someone new was actually willing to be nice to him, let alone go out of their way to help him. And, unlike his brothers, Jason didn’t seem to want to just get in Mari’s good graces, either.
“You don’t have to do that.”
“You’re right I don’t. I’m going to anyway.” Jason got out his phone and began tapping away. “In the meantime, you staying there could actually rile them up worse because I’ll be in the building they can’t get other eyes in and refuse to look for, let alone give them, anything to work with.” Adrien let out a laugh.
“You really enjoy messing with your family, don’t you?” Jason’s smile was a bit strained.
“It’s a habit more than anything at this point. But when I know they’re just being assholes for no real reason, it becomes a moral imperative. If I can still be said to have morals.” The last part was soft, and Adrien honestly wasn’t certain he meant to say it out loud. If his hearing wasn’t so advanced still, he wouldn’t have heard it, so Adrien decided to pretend he didn’t. Everyone deserved privacy.
“The vast majority of people wouldn’t think that they didn’t have a reason to have issues with me.” Granted the vast majority of people in Paris would be more than happy if he disappeared without a trace, but that was beside the point.
“I’ve never been one of the majority and they should know better than to judge someone by their blood relatives and rumors. If Demon Spawn gets a pass after actually trying to kill most of us, then everyone else should at least get the benefit of the doubt.” Adrien blinked at that, not quite sure what to make of it. Maybe whoever he was talking about had cooked something and given them all food poisoning? That would make sense. Jason scowled at his phone.
“Babs said that they didn’t even look into in properly because you own the property so no third parties were involved.”
“Oh, yeah. I had to buy a house because no one was willing to rent to me. Even then I had to do it under a shell cooperation because no one wanted to sell their property to me. I’d probably have to move out of France and legally change my name and possibly my appearance to get anything at this point.”
“What the fuck?” Jason seemed somewhere between pissed and confused.
“People really hate Gabriel, and I don’t blame them. He’s in jail and they need an outlet, so I get to be the lucky punching bag.”
“What the fuck?” Okay, now he was definitely pissed. “If it’s that bad, why don’t you leave? Change your name or do whatever you have to do?” That was a very good question. One he really didn’t have a good answer to.
“I tried giving Mari the company so I could. The employees almost revolted. They all saw exactly how my father treated me, not to mention the way he treated them. They were afraid of what would happen if someone else took over even though most of the changes I made - in house daycare, free meals, shorter workdays, the list goes on - came from Mari and her parents in the first place. And Mari flatly refused anyway. There’s too many people counting on me.” It seemed like there was always a need to stay. “I can’t just abandon them, no matter how much I wish I could. And then there’s Mari, Sabine, and Tom. I know it’s selfish, but I haven’t felt like part of a family since my Mom died and I… I just want to hold on to it for a while.”
Saying it out just made it worse. Him staying here put them all at risk, and he didn’t care enough about them to leave. No matter how he justified it by saying they knew the risks and wanted him here, he knew better. He was just as bad as Gabriel, wanting his own way and not caring who got hurt because of it. A hand on his knee broke him out of his thoughts, and he looked up to find Jason giving him a strange look.
“I get it. Everyone needs a home. Whether that’s a place, activity, or a person is different for everyone, but once you find it, it’s nearly impossible to let go without a fight. You shouldn’t beat yourself up over it. Not to mention your sister might actually kill you if you tried to leave at this point.” Adrien let out an amused huff. Jason wasn’t wrong. “If you do need an exit strategy for some reason, let me know. I’m very good at making things disappear.”
He said it with a smile and a wink, but Adrien got the feeling he was serious. He was far more touched by the offer than he should have been. But the thought of leaving everything behind and starting over was so tempting. Maybe once Mari was established in the company and the employees trusted her, he could become a silent partner and go find his own life. Someday.
