Dialectics of Liberation: Gentleness and Resistance for Endurance
Summary: In this post, I make my case for gentleness to exist alongside resistance. I provide dialectics that give us room to embody both of these qualities. At the end, I have compiled a dozen sets of links for us to take action — I invite you to choose one. Personal Foundations in Traditional Chinese Medicine: My Lineage, Interest, and Experience
Hello readers! It's been so, so long since I've made another piece public, and there's a lot of ground to cover. I've been exploring and loving the practices and philosophy of TCM, I've written about it in the newest post!
Image by: Luna Hu Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM or 中医) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems, which focuses on treating and preventing disease by restoring the balance of qi in the bodymind. My TCM Lineage Chinese Medicine was taught through the generations (家传) on both sides of my family. However, my great-great-grandparents’ generation did not continue passing along the tradition,…

Blueprint for Allyship: Health Update and How You Can Help (pw)ME
Hoping, praying, expecting, wishing, manifesting, longing for folks to pay attention to this post and read to the very end! Help! This is a call to action and a cry for solidarity. ME advocates cannot sustainably do this alone, so here’s a blueprint for allyship. See my previous posts if you think ME is “me” capitalized and I’m just screaming for attention. To be transparent, I have not always been a Covid safety advocate. I didn't arrive at this point effortlessly or without making mistakes. But it's never too late. Humans are not static beings. Every breath is a new beginning. Although I never completely ditched the mask, there have been instances where I caved to pressure and social norms. • A multi-day conference where we masked, but still had meals together. • Going to cohort mates' houses but not discussing testing or masking beforehand. • Business school orientation where I was the only one masking, but still needed a lunch break and didn't want to sit alone. • Family members or roommates dining out, so I figured if they were exposed, I would be too. In 2020, I sank into the teachings of disability justice. I truly believed we should let the experiences of those who are most marginalized inform community care. Honestly, my actions felt hypocritical, and I couldn't take the cognitive dissonance. Silence began to feel like a moral injury, especially since I have the privilege of being a student at the "top" school of public health. This solidified when I got the sickest I ever had with ME/CFS, and learned about the #MillionsMissing movement consisting of people who had a post-viral illness like mine. While mostly bedbound for a month with limbs of lead, I knew that if I could regain enough energy, I wanted to... (1) prevent others from experiencing this and joining the #MillionsMore pipeline via Covid, (2) intervene in ME's long, ongoing history of medical harm, neglect, and gaslighting, (3) participate in community with other disabled and chronically ill people. This is why I continue to do what I do: social media advocacy, Long Covid research, mutual aid (@CovidSafeCampus), and abolitionist peer support (@Hold.Coalition). To those who have been harmed by my not wearing a mask because of my complicity in an ableist society, I sincerely apologize and do not demand forgiveness. To those who have stopped wearing a mask, it is not too late to start. Your life and the lives of your community are worthy of protection. « 2022 roundup! » We’re somewhere between the Gregorian New Year and the Lunar New Year right now. My zodiac year didn’t disappoint me — there were disappointments and challenges, yes — but I got the confidence and the answers I needed. Here are some previews, the full post is in my Linktree (link in bio or https://linktr.ee/sunrequiem) and the URL is on the last slide. I value my life deeply, and I value witnessing one another in this online community, especially when so much is inaccessible and dangerous out there. Wow, I’ve connected with so many cool folks this year: mental health/ED clinicians, artists, writers, trans and disabled advocates and educators, somatic practitioners, abolitionists, people with lived experience, fellow public health students and professionals … shout out to you all. Seriously. My growth is our growth. A Crip timeline (especially when I was sick with C0vid) means I might start a piece on Gregorian NYE, finish it on the 2nd, publish on the 6th, and publicize on the 8th. Despite using Canva for years, I’m still experimenting with what format to use for my feed posts! Thank you everyone who checked in on me and sent memes. Image descriptions will be in comments. 2022: Years that Answer
Have a [insert what you need] new year, everyone! I wrote a little reflection piece on some of my takeaways from 2022.
Content Note: At the beginning of the Gregorian year, people in our generation tend to show off the highlight reels of their achievements and social lives. For those of us who have largely spent the last three years in isolation, this can be especially challenging to witness. We are simultaneously experiencing a mass disabling event and the cultural amnesia of its beginning. In this piece, I will…

Air filtration and ventilation are incredibly effective public health safety interventions that have been underutilized during the pandemic. While masking and vaccines have been overly politicized, more people might agree that clean air benefits everyone in a similar way that clean water and sanitation practices prevent us from getting sick through other means. In this post, I will make the case for clean air, and introduce a homemade solution that can be widely implemented by lay people. (FYI: 3M scientists tested these DIY “Corsi-Rosenthal boxes” and concluded that they are effective. Figures from such tests and studies are included as a bonus in the last 3 slides.) Note: Despite their popularity during the pandemic, the box fan design concept was not invented by Corsi and Rosenthal. Woodworkers commonly used this design to filter fine wood dust in their workshops before the pandemic. Image descriptions will be provided in the comments. I’m sharing this because you have a right to know the risks you are taking through exposure, even if they’re not being communicated to you through authority figures. I haven’t been exaggerating about how *not mild* Covid is, there are so many studies like the ones mentioned here with concerning clinical implications. One of them says that immune dysfunction persists for OVER 8 months post infection. I’m not an immunologist, so I find threads like this helpful for lay understanding (some stem background helps). It’s not your fault if you were never informed, but that’s not the same thing as willful ignorance and gaslighting people who try to tell you the science because it’s not “popular opinion.” Given all the literature coming out about Covid (this thread is JUST on the immune system, it impacts literally every system), it is irresponsible to perpetuate the messaging that it is only a mild illness. We are seeing immunosuppression happening on a population level this winter, which is overwhelming healthcare systems with secondary infections, and with the end of zero covid in China, it can only get worse. The very least you can do to protect your community is wear a mask and stay home if you’re sick. When I Talk About the Pandemic, I am Ghosted
I get it. We're tired of living in pandemic mode. But this doesn't bode well for those who are high risk in our communities.
I’ve been posting about the dangers of long covid, and the fact that the pandemic continues to disable and kill thousands of people each day. People get awkward about it. They leave me on read, they stop engaging, and I feel like I am speaking to the void. I know it makes people uncomfortable, because we’re in the era of the great forgetting. We want to forget that the world ever saw covid…

At this point in my journey, I find more insights into understanding my experience through non-Western frameworks. 100+ songs to sustain a movement — a playlist for the streets

ED Care in the Streets
I've been reflecting a lot on meeting different folks at the MEDA Conference, but especially the brilliant Gloria Lucas of Nalgona Positivity Pride!
Content warnings: eating disorder, weight bias Caption: 11×17 Poster from NPP’s Etsy shop, speech bubble reads “I dream of a world free from eating disorders.” “I dream of a world free of eating disorders.“ For years, I tried to wrap my head around my personal and our collective struggles with recovery. My desk✨aesthetic✨is currently minty gum wrappers, magic putty that changes from white to magenta under UV rays, a gorgeous book that has taken me over a year to finish, and a sweet letter that I’ve been meaning to reply to, used as a bookmark (sorry @eliene_w!!!) . My process is imperfect and non-linear, but that is okay. I am living at the pace where I can heal, nourish, and grow. I will practice patience and compassion to myself today. Let us cultivate rhythms of liberation to take root in our body-minds. . Image description: a white surface with a book titled “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer, with a pink letter folded and sticking out. For those of you who have joined this past year, you may not know that this account is actually an extension of my personal blog, Sun Requiem! I’ve been keeping at it for over five years, and apparently this media roundup is my 200th post, woohoo!! I had really missed blogging, but taking a step back with so much going on, nationally and personally, has been very necessary lately. I’m excited to share this one with you, and I hope that you check it out! . Link in bio to read my thoughts on Chinese and Chinese-American representation in the media in 2021. https://wp.me/p7vxO4-2Sq works too if you’re seeing this elsewhere! . 2021 Chinese/Chinese-American Media Roundup!
Since we are at the end of the year, I wanted to put together a non-exhaustive list of media I enjoyed from this year with Chinese/Chinese-American representation. Let me know if I missed any!
I don’t know about you, but I have definitely spent more time consuming media since the world moved into a virtual and hybrid era. Screens are now the way to see the world, and for the world to see ourselves. As BLM and Stop Asian Hate movements catalyzed national conversations on race, the norm is gradually shifting to include more diversity. While I was growing up, I experienced a combination…
