Professional athletes travel around for away games, you know this. Wanda’s mentioned her out-of-state games before to you, subconsciously reminding you of her possible leaves in the future. It was a possibility, but when it came you felt saddened by the news, especially when this trip was longer due to press and interviews.
“Hey,” she murmurs in a hushed tone, coming behind you from where you stood at the bathroom counter, “how’re you feeling?”
“Im fine.”
She eyes you wearily, the feeling making your skin crawl, “really, Wanda. It’s whatever.”
“I didn’t mean to tell you this so late. I only just remembered when I saw the information after my coach reminded us tonight—”
“Like I said, it’s whatever. Would’ve just been nice if you told me sooner.”
“I was planning to.”
“Well turns out you didn’t if you’re only telling me this the night before,” you say, heart aching as you realize she’ll be leaving tomorrow for her week and a half trip. You felt dramatic, you know you’ll see her again, but a week and half is long enough where you’ll miss her.
It’s long enough where her bed will begin to loose its heat, her side growing cold. It’s just long enough where she’ll be too busy to call you, get wrapped up with the scheduling they had for their team. You slam the drawer shut, the sudden spike in your energy levels making Wanda jump.
“Are you angry at me?”
You mock her tone, moving around her to grab the clothes you had thrown onto the floor before your shower.
“Talk to me. Why’re you angry?”
“Oh I don’t know. Maybe because my girlfriend is leaving for a week and a half? And oh, maybe because she thinks this isn’t important to tell me, let me know before hand?”
“I didn’t know it’d affect you this much.”
Her words snap a cord in you, your mind twisting her soft tone into one that’s scoffing at you.
“Are you just this forgetful or are you just ignorant? Because this seems to happen often where you seem to forget and then trying to apologize for it—like my birthday last week.”
“Hey,” she replies, eyebrows pinching in hurt, “that’s uncalled for, I thought we moved past that.”
“I thought we did too but here you are doing it again.”
She looks at you with disbelief on her face, “okay, woah—what’s going on?“
“You, Wanda! You’re the problem! I can’t keep dealing with your selfish thinking.”
“Look—I’m sorry for not telling you about this until now, I really am, but I’m not going to deal with this. You’re being rude. Maybe it is best I leave.”
No.
“Okay fine, you were going to anyways,” you exclaim, moving past her on your way out of her room, slamming her door behind you in the middle of her retaliation of yelling, ‘fine,’ back at you.
There was a space closet just beside her room, one you peered in to see if she had any extra blankets laying around. You found two, using them to make a make-shift bed on the couch seeing as you don’t know if Wanda would want you near her right now.
It pains you every time you remember the look on her face after you called her selfish, reminded her of last week’s grievance. She didn’t deserve any of that just because you were sad she had to leave.
There was an attempt made to sleep on the couch, eyes opening and shutting too often. Your ears were focusing on the soft sounds coming from her room, hearing her walk around or close a drawer. You were being selfish and yet you directed the word at her when she was only trying to console you. She’s the last person you would ever consider to be selfish. You squeeze your eyes shut, the movement forcing a tear down your face.
If you slept out here tonight she’d be gone early tomorrow morning. She’d leave thinking you thought she was selfish, that you were still upset she had forgotten your birthday. All were lies, tumbling out of you in the heat of the moment to deal with the hurt you felt knowing she was leaving out of no where—but it only succeeding in making it worse.
You shuffle out of the makeshift bed, feet tripping on the blankets as you push yourself back towards her room. She was sitting on her bed, scrolling on her phone when you walked in. It’s like she knew, hands reaching to cup your face when you rushed over to press a feverish kiss to her lips. She sets her phone onto the desk, bringing that hand to twist you under her so she can kiss you into the mattress.
Her hands run down your sides, caressing your hips and grabbing at the skin there to pull you further down under her. Your arms lock themselves around her neck, gasping when she bites down harshly on your lower lip.
“Please,” you beg, turning your face to deepen a kiss when you notice she’s moving back to kiss you again. She nips at your neck, turning the skin there into a darker color. You tilt your head back, giving her more space to roam, to press another mark onto your skin. There’s a thigh between yours, moving your cunt along the expanse of it.
“Fuck,” she whispers, reaching to pull your clothing off after.
“Please—fuck me,” you beg again, pulling at her shirt. She’s shrugging it off, pulling it over her head to toss it beside her. Her chest presses into yours as she spreads your right leg up, opening you up for her. She’s looking into your eyes, seeking your confirmation before continuing.
She’s reaching, grabbing the harness to fasten it to her. The tip’s already at your entrance, pushing through your tight heat. Your body freezes, bottom lip dropping open as you feel every inch slide in, already beginning to move. You cry out when she thrusts back, hips moving at almost a punishing pace.
You’re pushed into the sheets, hands intertwined with hers by your head. She bites down on your shoulder, fucking into you harder after hearing you whimper. You’ve got your thighs pushed wide, welcoming her size as best as you can, but she still splits you open and it makes your eyes roll back.
“You’re infuriating,” she says, thumb brushing your previous tear stains away. You barely hear her over your incoherent mumbling, a string of pleas and whines escaping you to echo throughout her room.
“No,” you cry, reaching for her when she slides out. She’s shushing you, looking down at where you were connected to gage where to press in again. She gets distracted by the wetness coating your thighs, the dark spot forming onto her mattress from underneath where you lay. Her fingers spread your folds open, moaning as she licks through them, stopping directly onto your clit.
You’re weaving your hands into her hair, pulling her hair so tight. Your thighs shake beside her head, hips squirming as she sucks against your clit. She’s been keeping her eyes on you this whole time, angled up at you to see how beautifully you arch your back. With her tongue pressing into you and a finger circling your clit—you loose it, moaning as you come onto her tongue.
She grips your waist, flipping you so you’re breathing heavily into the mattress. The way you’re pushing your ass back into her gives her the best sight of the arousal running down your legs. You wiggle your hips, gasping when she brings her hand down to spank your ass.
“Yes!—ah, yes,” you whine, moving back to push more of her length into you. She grips your waist, hand brushing the skin to pull you until she’s bottomed out again. Her current angle is pressing right into the spot that makes you see white, makes you loose control over yourself seeing how you’ve begun to writhe from pleasure.
“Wanda-ah, uh—oh!”
You pull at her sheets, whine half muffled from how your face was being pushed into them. She squeezes your hip, “gonna miss this when I’m gone, aren’t you? Little thing can’t pleasure yourself the way I do.”
“There,” you choke on a moan, “oh!—right there!”
She knows where you’re talking about, having full knowledge and confidence about your body. Her thrusts are short, quick—pushing rapidly against that spot in ways that builds the heat between your thighs again. The second her finger is reaching over to rub at your clit you’ve let yourself go, silently screaming into the pillows.
Wanda pushes a finger past your hole even as she’s still sheathed inside, bringing it to her lips after. She hums around her fingers, eyes in a lustful gaze as she looks down at your panting body, connected to her still. She jerks her hips into yours playfully, laugh full of ego when you mewl after her ministration.
“I’m selfish? Look at you right now,” she emphasizes her words with another jerk of her hips, “came twice and you’re wanting more.”
You twist your face, ruffling the pillow to look back at her, shivering when you find her eyes. She leans over your body, arms flexing where they fall by your head. You lean back into her body, leaking all over her strap.
“I’m not stopping until you’re begging me to. Your body wont forget this all the days I’m gone,” she husks into your ear, “that sound good to you?”
You’re only able to nod, lips opening and closing with nothing but whines coming out. You’ve been reduced to nothing and she knows it.
“You always come crawling back to me.”
You want to deny it but you can’t, and she knows it, a smile coming upon her face when you nod.

“What’s this punks name again?”
The breath you let out was long and excruciating. “I am not repeating myself.”
“C’mon, y/n,” Bucky whined, knocking his head back on the couch. He watched you bustle around the kitchen from his inverted vantage point. “How the hell am I supposed to swoop in and save the day if I don’t even know the kid’s name?”
“Okay, well, first of all—” the fridge door clicked shut with a swift motion of your hips “—he’s not a ‘kid’. I’m pretty sure he’s a few months older than you.”
“Semantics.”
“And second of all,” you stressed, pointing a butter knife in his direction. “There will be no ‘swooping in’. I’m going to have a nice date and you are going to go hang out with your puck rabbits or whatever they're called. There will be no thinking about me and no swooping in my vicinity.”
Bucky rolled his eyes, kicking up from the couch and rounding the kitchen counter to pick at your sandwich. You knocked his hand away several times, but you both knew it was futile. In the months you’d been living with the hockey player—who was far too big for the small, shoebox of an apartment you leased—you’d learned that food was non-negotiable for Bucky Barnes.
There were many other things you’d learned about him as well. He sang in the shower, but only when he thought you weren’t home. He had an annoying penchant for using your $30 lotion—again, when he thought you weren’t home. And he loved to throw his massive, smelly gear just about anywhere it would land right when he got home from every practice.
He didn’t really care if you were home for that last one.
Bucky was the last person you thought you would be rooming with when you posted that ad last summer. A small, quaint room previously occupied by your now engaged (and traitorous) best friend, you assumed someone like-minded to yourself would have taken you up on your offer. The price point wasn’t egregious and the building was relatively close to campus.
But weeks ticked by, and you started getting desperate. Your landlord wasn’t a nice lady, something you were positive she took pride in, and she decided that a rent increase was the perfect way to ring in the new school year. You were on the verge of destitution, and as it so happened, the only other person as desperate as you was the starting center for your college’s hockey team.
You hardly got along. It had taken weeks for your eye to stop twitching every time he tumbled through the front door at three in the morning, and even longer for you not to feel an infuriating aggravation at his random, nighttime smoothies. You supposed he probably felt the same about your cleanliness rules and your incessant reminders about trash days. Because Bucky was in charge of bringing the trash down those long, apartment steps. Not you.
But you’d be lying if you said things hadn’t gotten easier as of late. Conversation flowed more smoothly, things that made you seethe before were only mildly annoying, and Bucky was being… considerate? You weren’t quite sure what to call the random cups of coffee he brought home on occasion. Or his sudden urge to warm up your car when he had a morning class before yours.
There was also the case of that party last weekend. A frat party with far too many drunk men and not enough common sense, you had had the urge to leave the second you got there. But Wanda had dragged you along for the sole purpose of driving her home after she got hammered, so you were essentially stuck.
It was fine at first. Hot and crowded and loud, but fine. You kept a general eye on Wanda and scrolled aimlessly on your phone in the armchair you claimed. And then it wasn’t fine, because a man twice your size was encroaching on your space and unrelenting.
“What kinda girl comes to a party and doesn’t even wanna talk to anyone?”
“You want to come up to my room and watch a movie or something?”
“Hey, I’m talking to you, bitch.”
You weren’t even aware that Bucky had been at that party. It wasn’t surprising—the line between fraternities and sports was blurred at your college—but the space he took up as he intercepted the man in front of you was.
~~
“There a problem here?” Bucky posed, crossing his arms over his chest, his presence looming above your seated position. His weight shifted to his toes.
The man didn’t miss a beat. “Yeah, you. Move.”
“Wanna fucking tell me what to do again?”
“Fuck you, man.”
A harsh shove to Bucky’s chest was all it took for a right hook to echo in the living room of the frat house. There was chaos. Grunts and screams from the drunk people surrounding the unnecessary fight created a cacophony of unpleasant sounds that seemed to get the attention of someone in charge. The man—Brian, you had now learned based on screams—was pulled back from Bucky and getting chewed out by some president or manager of something.
And Bucky was seething, chest rising and falling laboriously as he wiped at the new bruise forming on his face.
Fights were not uncommon. But this one had been about you. For you.
“Bucky?” you asked when the crowd calmed and Brian was no longer in the room.
You watched his back release its tight coil. He turned. “Are you okay?”
The words were almost lost in the noise of the crowd, but he was close enough that they created a tactile vibration across your skin. His pupils were dilated and he looked so disheveled it would have been charming if there wasn’t also a cut forming on his brow.
“Y/n.”
It took you a moment to realize that you hadn’t answered him. Your response fell out of you as if you’d been shoved. “I’m—I’m fine.”
He grunted, but it was more of a puff of air. “The fuck was that guy?”
“I don’t know,” you replied, realizing by the way you swayed that you had stood up at some point. “He just—”
“We’re going home.”
“What? I can’t, I’m here with Wanda. I’m driving her, Bucky, I can’t just leave.”
He grabbed your wrist, the grip achingly soft compared to the blows he was landing minutes before. “She left with that British guy she’s been on and off with. Asked me to tell you.”
That explained his random appearance. Your brows pinched as you took in the information, eyes cast down to the angry red marks marring Bucky’s knuckles. He’d been in fights before. So many fights. On the ice.
This was different.
“I haven’t been drinking—I can drive myself home. You don’t have to leave,” you shouted over the music now bumping in the room.
He didn’t respond, not verbally. He pulled you to his front instead, leading you through the impossible crowd until cool night air began melting into your skin. His silence was strange. Bucky’s favorite activity was talking your ear off until you told him to shut up, but right now… nothing. Even his earlier words had been clipped.
You felt responsible for easing the tension in the air as Bucky continued to guide you to your car. You hadn’t told him where you parked, but he seemed to know the exact location anyways.
“You really don’t have to leave with me,” you mumbled. “It wasn’t a big deal or anything.”
“It was a big deal.”
~~
The drive home had been silent. The walk to the door had been as well. Bucky spent a few minutes appraising you in the overhead light of the living room when you got inside, but after that there was nothing. He went to his room and you went to yours.
There was no discussion about it the morning after, either. Bucky apparently wanted to pretend nothing ever happened, so you respected that. Even now, you ignored the fading cuts on his hands as he shoveled food into his mouth.
Bucky’s next words were muffled by a mouthful of bread. “Well where’s this dude taking you at least?”
“Ice skating.”
The cough and sudden exasperation was very expected out of the man next to you, Bucky’s next words hardly containing syllables. “Huh?”
“We’re going ice skating,” you reiterated. You picked up your lunch and headed for the living room, ignoring the slightly heaviness in your chest. “It’s winter and ice skating is festive. The rink on campus has decorations.”
“Without me? Y/n, you’re gonna let some guy who probably doesn’t even know how to skate—”
“Bucky—” you attempted to interrupt.
“—drag you around the rink like a rag doll?” he continued, holding his hand up to mute your incoming speech. “I’ve asked you to come by the rink, like, a ton of times. You’ve never shown any interest.”
You rolled your eyes and shot him a cross look as he picked your feet up from where they rested on the couch and dropped them into his lap. He went on with his rant for a little while longer, knocking his head back against cushions and accusing you of being a bad roommate. You had a few rebuttals of your own, but there was a reason you had never accompanied him to the rink.
A good reason.
You didn’t date athletes.
It was true that simply going to visit Bucky at a practice, or letting him be the one to drag you around the ice like a rag doll, wouldn’t mean you were in a relationship by any means. But it would be an extra step. And if you were being honest with yourself, it would only take a few of those extra steps for the irritation you felt towards Bucky to melt into something else.
And you didn’t date athletes.
You did not.
You didn’t have the time, nor the patience, to put up with the cheating, the anger issues, or the crazy schedules. And there wasn’t a single athlete you’d met at your sport-centered university that was willing to compromise on any of those subjects. Especially the cheating. You’d learned that the hard way after dating a lacrosse player for approximately one month before receiving the dreaded DM from a girl you had never met.
The man hadn’t even given you the courtesy of pretending he didn’t know what she was talking about. He just admitted to his wrong-doing and shrugged. Shrugged.
So athletes were not exactly in your good graces when it came to dating.
“Are you even listening to me?” Bucky cut through your thoughts, patting your shin in impatience.
You blinked and reoriented yourself, focusing on the hairs that fanned across Bucky’s face. “Of course I am,” you lied. “But my answer is still the same. I’m going on my date and you are not going on my date.”
He groaned, apparently giving up as he cradled your legs closer to him to lean over and grab the remote from the coffee table. He flipped the channel to ESPN—typical—and you ate your sandwich, silently cursing him. He had a TV in his room.
“When is it?” he suddenly asked, breaking the silence that had knitted itself into a comfortable blanket over the room.
“Tonight,” you answered plainly.
The arms atop your legs tensed.
~~
The dichotomy of the man sitting beside you was impressive. On one hand, he was so full of himself that he had missed almost all of your conversation starters due to being so transfixed by his reflection in the rink’s glass. He had yet to ask you a single question about yourself and had insisted that the four other girls skating tonight were in love with him.
On the other hand, he was, quite possibly, the most uninteresting person you had ever met. You were usually very quick to laugh, but every word out of his mouth was almost painful. He wouldn’t stop talking about his ex-girlfriend, gave you one word answers about anything other than baseball, and was honestly really terribly at ice skating. You were no pro either, but you found yourself on your back every time he tried holding your hand.
The tumble five minutes ago had you seeking out the penalty box on the side of the rink. You needed a break, you had told him, hoping he would continue on making a fool of himself and give you a moment alone. But he followed you instead, and was now sitting beside you, talking about baseball.
You supposed that was better than making you fall while talking about baseball.
“I bet we could do that,” he remarked, pointing out onto the ice and catching your attention. A couple who clearly had more experience than you was twirling each other around. “We definitely could. I pick up good speed.” You cringed. “I really don’t think we should try, Sean. My tailbone is already pretty bruised.”
“Oh, c’mon! I won’t try the throwing part, just the twisty stuff.”
“We are literally on rental skates. You will kill me,” you deadpanned. You were tired at this point and seriously questioning why you thought ice skating was a good first date idea.
Well, there actually was an answer for that. But you were not going to think about the hockey player that popped into your head when Sean asked you on a date in the dining hall last week.
Definitely not.
“I’m not going to let my date think I’m boring,” Sean groaned, yanking you up from your seat.
You gave a few tugs and words of resistance but they were ultimately useless. You figured it would be just as useless to tell the guy you already thought he was boring. He probably wouldn’t even hear you.
On unsteady skates, Sean guided you to a mostly cleared corner of the rink and gripped your forearms. He squinted as he surveyed the area, the corner of his mouth turning up in a way that made your stomach roll. This entire date had been a bad idea.
“Maybe we should just watch them do it,” you tried, words wavering.
“No!” he grinned. “No, we got this. It’s gonna look so cool.”
And then you were spinning. You’d never been spun against your will before, but it sucked. Your skates kept getting stuck in the divots in the ice and the grip on your forearms was close to bruising. You were starting to get dizzy and Sean showed no signs of caring. God, he really was dragging you around the rink like a rag doll. Bucky was going to get a kick out of this.
“Okay, ready?” Sean called, an unwarranted jubilation in his tone.
“What?” you yelled.
He didn’t answer you. Instead, he let go, and you went flying in another direction without a clear path. It only lasted a moment, but the sound of your head smacking onto the ice signified the end of that movement. You landed on your arm next, and then your back. Again.
This time felt different though. Your head was spinning and there were muted pinpricks trailing up to your wrist. The ache there was dulled compared to the biting iciness in your back, but as soon as you tried leaning on it to get up, it became sharp.
“Oh shit!” came Sean’s laughter-filled gasp. “My bad. I really didn’t mean to let go.”
You blinked a few times to clear the blurriness from your vision but it proved unhelpful. “I think… I think my arm’s broken.”
“Wait, seriously?” he asked, wobbling down to a seat beside you.
“Yeah, it’s—”
“Everything okay over here?” a voice interrupted. You tried blinking again to take in the man that towered over the two of you, but the lights overhead washed him out.
You recognized him…maybe? You felt like you were going to throw up.
Sean answered for you. “Yeah, man, we’re fine. She just fell.”
“Y/n, are you okay?” the man asked, ignoring your date completely.
“Do I know you?” you slurred.
You thought you heard a curse. “What made you think throwing her around was a good idea?”
“Dude, it wasn’t even that fast. Or my fault. She just couldn’t keep her feet under her.”
“Well, dude, maybe you should go home.”
Sean scoffed. “Right, and who’s going to take this one home?”
Your head was starting to hurt with all of the back and forth. The man that just joined, the taller one, kneeled down beside you. His blonde hair cast a harsh glare that had you squinting again.
“You want me to call Bucky?” he asked.
Bucky? How would he know Bucky? Blonde hair began morphing into a man in your memory, and you reached for the material of his shirt, looping it between your fingers.
“Steve Rogers?” you mumbled.
The man, now identified as Steve, sighed. “I’m calling him. Go home, Sean. Her roommate is coming to get her.”
There was more discussion, something about Steve having the authority to kick him out and Sean not understanding what all of the fuss was about. Steve warned him about something and Sean scoffed as if the situation was beneath him. And then he left.
Steve was then in your line of sight again, brows pinched together and a bright orange vest covering his shoulders. His hands hovered in front of you as if you’d break if he touched you and you almost found it funny. Steve was a huge guy with a lot of authority on Bucky’s team, but right now he looked like a scared animal.
“Why are you dressed like a construction worker?” you asked.
A small smile graced his face. “I’m working at the rink today. Everyone on the team has to take shifts during the holidays.”
“Hmm,” you hummed. “I think my arm is broken.”
“I know. I’m pretty sure you have a concussion too. Let’s get you off the ice, yeah?”
You tried to nod, but that hurt too much so you let Steve assist you in shakily standing up. He guided you to the seats by the rental skate counter with a soft but sure hand on your back, asking some guy named Antonio for an ice pack. Everything around you felt like a fever dream.
Gentle touches rolled the sleeve of your sweater back to reveal a swollen wrist that Steve immediately covered with an ice pack.
He cursed again. “Well he’s gonna be pissed.”
“Who?” Your head swayed with the question.
Steve looked up to meet your gaze, lips parting to answer, when he was replaced by a different face. Your brain was having trouble keeping up with everything, obviously, because Bucky was in front of you now. He was kneeling between your legs with his hands on your face and you had no idea where Steve went.
“What the fuck?” you blurted out.
“Hey, y/n.” Bucky spoke your name low and soothing, his fingers moving to your eyes where he pried them open one at a time and looked for something you couldn’t see. His next words were directed over his shoulder. “Maybe a concussion. Tell me what happened again?”
“Sean Marcus was being an ass. Flung her all over the place,” Steve replied.
“Why are you here?” you interjected, trying to focus on one thing at a time. “I told you not to come on my date.”
Bucky moved his assessment to your arm next, shifting the ice pack. “Never really agreed to those terms.”
He turned back to Steve after that, having another discussion that you barely understood. Bucky absentmindedly fiddled with the material of your jeans as he spoke, and you put all of your energy into not face planting on the ground. This past week had truly been a series of terrible events with terrible men.
After some amount of time elapsed, you were walking to the parking lot with a jacket thrown over your shoulders and Bucky continuously jutting a hand out each time you took a step. He was very well versed in concussions, apparently.
“Okay, in you go, killer,” Bucky prompted, opening the passenger door.
You eyed the front seat, scrunching your face up. “My arm hurts.”
The man in front of you seemed to soften, his shoulders dropping on a long exhale. “I know, sweetheart. But we gotta go to the hospital to fix that. I’ll make sure it doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“I should just call Wanda. Or Nat. You don’t have to be the one to take me.”
“I can take you just fine.”
“Why do you want to you? Aren’t you busy?”
Another long sigh, this one accompanied by hands on your shoulders, fingers at the base of your neck. “Get in the car.”
His eyes were boring into yours, searching for something, or maybe already finding it there. You still had your arm cradled to your chest and you titled your head to the side as you observed him. There was something else to his gaze that you couldn’t quite describe. It reminded you of his expression after he came home from a rough game. Angry. Discontent.
“You’re being weird,” you commented, breaking the silence you had created.
“You broke your arm and smacked your head on the ice,” he simply replied, as if the statement was an explanation.
“Yeah, but—”
“And then that douchebag did nothing about it,” Bucky interrupted. “So please, y/n, get in the car so I can help you before I find him and kick his ass. Because you know I’m not above fighting people.”
You blinked, and then slid into the front seat.
The drive was quiet. You’d never been in Bucky’s car before, but the spinning in your head didn’t give you much space to inspect it too closely. You caught hockey gear in the back, a keycard to the rink dangling off the rearview mirror, and a small collection of hair ties in one of the cupholders. One caught your attention.
“Hey, this one’s mine.” You picked up the purple band and rolled it between your fingers. “Thief.”
Bucky snatched it back. “Mine now.”
He made a sharp turn that had you sucking air between your teeth and repositioning your arm. Bucky sent you a quick, achingly apologetic look.
“Sorry, almost there.” A long beat of silence and then a mumbled, “I should keep your hair tie. You won’t be able to do your hair alone with a broken arm anyway.”
~~
Your wrist was fractured, not broken. You also only had a minor concussion. This was all great news to you, especially since they told you after administering a hefty amount pain reliever. To Bucky, this was apparently terrible, life-altering news.
After practically body slamming into the front door of your apartment, he chucked his wallet and keys down on the kitchen counter and began grumbling to himself as he opened and closed kitchen cabinets. You watched from a distance, half amused, half concerned for the rusting hinges. He finally found what he was looking for—a cup—and continued to mutter to himself as he filled it with gatorade.
“Are you… okay?” you asked tentatively.
Bucky ripped the freezer open and manhandled three to four ice cubes. “I’m fine. You are not.”
“I’m okay now,” you assured. Bucky stalked over to you anyways, pressing the sports drink into your hand that was not wrapped in a cast.
You looked down at the glass and sent him a baffled look. He nodded at it and raised his brows, a silent demand for you to drink.
“Okay. And why do I need to drink gatorade?” Your words were slow.
“You were just on the ice and haven’t had any water for at least three hours.”
“Bucky,” you began. “I was ice skating recreationally for about thirty minutes. I don’t need to replenish my electrolytes.”
“Will you just… will you just drink the damn drink?” he groaned, gesturing to it with a firm hand. “Jesus, I can’t take care of you when you go and get yourself hurt by idiots. So just let me do what I know I can do, alright?”
“You don’t have to take care of me.” You were beginning to raise your voice, matching some of the frustration in the room.
Bucky threw his hands in the air, tugging at his roots on the way down. He moved further into the kitchen and leaned against the counter with stiff, rod-like arms propping him up. And then he sighed, long and profound as if this was the hardest conversation he’d had all year. His head hung heavy between stiff shoulders and you felt the environment shift.
You almost wanted to intervene on his thoughts again, to make some comment about the dishes in the dishwasher or pretend you were going to go take a nap. But he had something to say, something you needed to hear, and so you stayed. You blinked and clenched your fist in the uncomfortable silence, but you stayed.
“Y/n, I want to take care of you,” Bucky breathed out, words still directed toward the floor, almost too low to make out. “I’ve been tryna get you to see that for weeks now, but you’ve either got no clue or you want absolutely nothing to do with me.”
You stopped blinking, stopped fidgeting, stopped breathing altogether. You watched as Bucky drummed his fingers against the counter and still refused to look up. You swallowed hard because you weren’t clueless, but also because you wanted everything to do with Bucky Barnes.
And nothing at the same time.
“Bucky…” you began, with a tone of surprise you weren’t sure was believable.
“Don’t do it yet,” he stopped you. “Don’t…don’t tell me no yet. I’m still pissed as hell that you got hurt and you shouldn’t be alone with a concussion. I don’t need you avoiding me when you can’t even drive a car.”
“You’re being presumptuous.”
He snapped his head up, his eyes rushing back and forth between your own. The drumming on the counter ceased, instead replaced by balled up fists turning white under days old cuts and fading bruises. He didn’t say anything. You searched the empty air for a reply.
“I wouldn’t avoid you. I don’t know if I could avoid you—not anymore. You’re sort of a big part of my life now.” A good start, you thought. Not a real answer, but not a rejection.
Bucky bit the inside of his cheek and eyed the drink still perspiring in your hand. You set it down at his observance, moving closer to his slumped posture in the kitchen.
But Bucky stood up straight at your movement, becoming guarded, stiff. “I shouldn’t have said anything. Bad timing, just forget it. You should try and get some sleep.”
“I don’t want to forget it,” you softly spoke, shaking your head.
He clenched his jaw. “And I don’t want to hear that you don’t feel the same way about me that I feel about you. Not right now. I feel like I’m going insane, watching you go out on dates and having my best friend tell me that my girl—that’s not really my girl—is all banged up on the ice because of some asshole.”
You opened your mouth to speak, but Bucky kept going, now pacing in the kitchen. “I mean, y/n, you’re my everyday. I wake up and you’re making coffee. You text me in class to ask what I need at the grocery store and then I call you after practice to make sure you got back to the apartment. I think about you so god damn much and I can’t believe there was a time in my life that I didn’t get to end my day in a home that has you. And you’re just my roommate. You want nothing to do with athletes, I get it—” he added, catching your eye in the middle of his rant, “—but, shit, I haven’t even looked at another girl since… well it doesn’t even matter.”
“Tell me,” you whispered. There were a million other things you could’ve said, a million explanations that would have made sense. But the two soft words stopped Bucky from tracking holes in the ground. They shoved him from his shallow breaths and made him look at you.
And, god, did he look at you. You must have been worse for wear. A hospital visit mixed with one too many tumbles onto solid ice probably had your hair in disarray and your face pressed with exhaustion, but his gaze was revering. Candy-coated red with soft blues melting below brows that fluxed with the movement of his lips; Bucky was beautiful, and he was looking at you as if you matched.
His tone confirmed as much, light and saccharin as he said, “That dumb movie a few weeks ago, the one about the superheroes. Your friends wouldn’t watch it with you so you made me. You were so excited even though it was awful and you were out like a light within the first hour. You rolled over onto me and I wasn’t gonna wake you up so I sorta just held you.”
He paused, trailing his eyes up to the light fixtures. “At the risk of sounding pathetic, it felt like I had you, you know? Like we were going through all our usual motions, but after I annoyed the hell out of you and you told me off, you were mine. I can’t… I can’t really picture that with another girl.”
There were very few times you had considered yourself speechless. But with Bucky Barnes standing in front of you, red-faced and vulnerable and still wearing the stupid hospital nametag they made him put on in the waiting room, you had no words. There was none of the arrogance you usually associated with him, no short-temper or pestering taunts. It was just Bucky, and he was pouring his heart onto the kitchen floor. For you.
“You get why you can’t tell me no just yet?” he asked, trying to get something out of you. Anything. “You can break my heart, but let me just make sure you’re okay first. And I can’t beat the shit out of Sean if we aren’t on speaking terms.”
The laugh that left you was one of disbelief, but the breathiness and accompanying tears fit the heaviness of the room. Your glossy eyes met Bucky’s and something flashed on his face, but it was soon out of your line of sight because you were kissing him. You were kissing him hard and your bodies were too close for the cast between you but it didn’t matter.
He didn’t respond at first, hand hovering at your back. But then he did and the cold linoleum of the kitchen floor was gone from your bare feet. He sat you on the counter, so gently, as if you were glass, and you let your hand brush against the cracks and divots of your home. The one that Bucky came back to every night to see you.
The one that had housed so many nights of confusion and longing and denial.
The one that had Bucky kissing the life out of you on the kitchen counter.
He pulled away first, forehead pressed to yours. “Didn’t think I’d ever get to do that.”
“You can do it again.”
“Oh, I will, baby.”
Laughter met in the air between you—sweet, short, intertwined. There was so much you wanted to tell him, so many instances like the one he shared before where you were left questioning boundaries and feelings and lines. But, you figured, there would be so many opportunities to tell him. So much time together.
“I texted Wanda that night,” you shared, interrupting the kisses he was pressing to your cheek. “After I woke up and you had taken me back to my room.”
He smiled against your skin. “What’d you say?”
“I told her I was an idiot—that I was falling for the enemy.”
Bucky ran a soft hand along the back of your head, a smirk lighting up his face. He was slotted between your legs and kept his other hand firmly pressed onto the kitchen counter, caging you in, making sure your arm didn’t hit the cabinets.
“And is that true?”
“I don’t know,” you hummed, connecting your foreheads once again, wanting to stay impossibly close. “Try to cure my broken bone with gatorade again and we’ll see.”

Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I can’t do this,” You groaned looking down at the few sketches you’ve managed to produce since you refused to step foot back into the hockey arena again. You could feel the pit you were falling into already growing, and it was all because of a certain fluffy haired, sea-blue eyed hockey player.
“You can do this and you will do this darling,” Loki drawled out as he spoke with a hint of annoyance. He was laying down with his leg dangled off the side of the fountain in the student commons, an open area full of windows and natural light. His other leg was propped up and bent at the knee which you were using as a back rest. You side eyed him begrudgingly.
“This is awful,” you leaned your head back against his knee.
“Well don’t look now, but awful just entered the commons,” you followed Loki’s gaze and noticed Barnes and a couple of the other players entering the area. A couple girls were making their way over to them as they placed their bags down and sat at a bar table. Barnes' eyes swept the commons and caught your gaze, he stopped and squinted and you looked down instantly.
He nudged Wilson with his elbow, who made an annoyed noise, “what Bucky?” Bucky tipped his chin in your direction, Wilson’s eyes followed and he stared for a couple seconds. “Wait, is that the girl from the rink?” Bucky nodded, thinking the same thing. He couldn’t get your eyes out of his head, they were so expressive from the few glimpses he had of them. “She’s hanging out with Odinson’s brother,” the younger Odinson was usually present at the parties his brother threw but rarely participated in anything. Usually hiding away in a corner or in his room reading.
“I think so,” Bucky stood and threw his bag over his shoulder.
“Where are you going?” Wilson hissed.
“To say hello,” Bucky gave him his dazzling smile.
Loki noticed Barnes coming toward you two before you did, your head was down as you focused on the drawing you were working on, “trouble is heading our direction,” Loki said lowly, you looked up without lifting your head and saw Barnes striding in your direction. You swallowed thickly and kept your head down, he might just be walking in this direction for another reason. He couldn’t pick you out in a crowd, impossible, he only saw you twice.
“Excuse me,” your dreams were dashed as you saw the toes of his shoes and his frame created a shadow over your sketchbook. “I couldn’t help but notice you were at the rink a week ago,” he said, “and I know every pretty girl that hangs out there, can’t say I know you,” he said with an air of arrogance. You scoffed at him, side eyeing Loki who had his book covering his mouth, but you could feel the slight tremble from his contained amusement.
“I think you’re mistaken,” you said in a hushed tone.
“I don’t think so, you have the same hair and,” his hand snatched the sketch book from you. “Sketch book,” you jumped startled at the sudden invasion of privacy.
“Hey give that back,” you snapped harshly. Reaching to take the book back, he kept it from your reach easily. You stood now and pushed his outstretched hand out of the way to grab the book from his other hand. Your chest pressed up against his as you reached desperately for the sketchbook. “I said give it back.”
“Ah baby, don’t be like that,” your nose scrunched up and you narrowed your eyes at him, he had a playful expression on his face and his eyes were gleaming with mischief as he gazed down at you.
“I’m not your baby,” you said sternly. “And give me my sketchbook back please, now.” You seethed. His eyes flicked to you for a moment before flicking to the open drawing.
“You know that certainly looks like me, I know I have admirers. But no one has ever drawn me,” he mused as he continued to keep the book from your grasp. You looked at Loki who was already sitting up and standing.
“Give it back to her Barnes,” Loki's tone was tense, and stern. “She asked you nicely.”
Barnes' eyes snapped from the book to Loki in an instant and he turned to fully face Loki. They stood at the same height, but Barnes was stockier. “What are you gonna do about it Odinson,” Barnes taunted.
“Don’t be a child. You wouldn’t want to cause a scene,” Loki said in a tone with underlying intent. “You don’t need the coach to hear about another incident,” Loki said knowingly. You watched the tense exchange between the two men with wide eyes, the tension palpable. A few more tense seconds and Barnes relented, lifting his hands up in mock surrender.
“Whatever prick,” Barnes spat at Loki. “You ever want to have some real fun, you know where to find me sugar” he winked  and handed the sketch book to Loki and looked at you once more, his eyes roving over your body. Your eyes widened at his choice of words, taken slightly back by how hostile he became when Loki intervened.
Loki handed you back your sketchbook before putting a hand on your back and leading you the opposite direction of Barnes, you looked over your shoulder quickly before picking up the pace to match Loki.
Once sufficiently far away from the commons you stopped and looked up at Loki.
“What was that?” You asked. You know Loki knew Bucky, hell you’d seen him at Thor’s parties before. Usually you would be in Loki's room with him when you attended them, disliking them as much as he did.
“Barnes being Barnes,” Loki said with a slightly annoyed tone. “He’s got a rap sheet. One more complaint or misbehavior and he’s benched for the rest of the season,” Loki stated. “That doesn’t look great for an NHL prospect.” You nodded as you listened to him speak.
“Thank you,” you said softly as you hugged your sketch pad to your chest.
“It’s no problem darling,” he said back sweetly. “Now, you need to get back to the rink and get your project together.” You huffed and groaned.
“You had to ruin it,” you whined and threw your head back. “I’ll go with Nat to the next practice,” you relented and stared up at Loki.
Loki smiled and patted the top of your head “perfect darling.” You glared at him for a moment before shaking your head.
Tumblr media
~The next day~
You sighed as Nat dragged you to the rink, making sure you had the appropriate clothing on this time so you couldn’t duck out randomly.
“This is the worst,” you groaned as you sunk into the hard plastic seats and covered your face with your hands.
“Stop whining, it’s fine,” Nat sat next to you and smiled at Clint who skated up to the glass. He waved at her and you before skating backwards, showing off. Nat was like a giggly school girl as she watched him. You rolled your eyes and smirked at her.
You propped your sketch pad on the arm of the seat and hunched over to draw. Your eyes trained on the skates as the players drifted by. The movement of the blades over the ice was incredible. You had stayed up and researched how the skating part actually worked, “Nat? Did you know the reason they glide like that?” You said absently as you focused on the sketch you're doing. She hummed in acknowledgment, “the blade of skate melts a very thin layer of the surface ice and they glide on the water from the melt,” you muttered.
“Interesting, no I didn’t,” Nat said back as she watched her man snipe a puck into the net. You were watching as well, sketching the stick as he flicked it effortlessly and the puck soaring through the air. Silence fell over you two once again as you focused on the paper before you.
That silence was quickly ruined by someone slamming into the boards in front of you and you yelped in surprise. You squinted at the body in front of you and then glared at him. Barnes. He was saying something but you couldn’t quite hear him, pointing to your ear and then shrugging to indicate you couldn’t hear him. He made some obscene gestures before skating away. You rolled your eyes and went back to drawing once again.
Then someone else banged on the glass making it shake. You looked up and glared, but this time it wasn’t Barnes, his teammate, “Wilson,” Nat said as you stared at him.
Wilson was pointing toward the center of the rink where Barnes was skating effortlessly, moving beautifully on the ice. He moved the puck back and forth quickly causing the defenceman to stumble and he scored on the net. He lifted his hand up in the air and spun on one foot. He pointed his gloved hands at you, you rolled your eyes in response.
As much as you hated to admit it, Barnes' movement was too captivating to not want to draw. “He might be a prick, but damn he can skate,” Nat voiced your thoughts.
“He’s handsome too,” you regretted the words the second they spilled out. Nat turned her head and raised her brow at you, a sly smile on her lips. “No, I don’t mean I think he’s handsome. He’s just you know, got that natural handsomeness to him,” you stammered. “Oh god, I’m making it worse,” you buried your face in your hands. Nat laughed a deep bellied laugh while patting your shoulder.
“No, you’re right. He’s handsome. And he knows it. That makes it worse,” Nat said, her tone a little sour. You nodded in agreement, he then flew past you two, you both rolled your eyes.
Practice ended and you followed Nat to the wait for Clint. She asked you to join them for pizza after practice. Standing in a hallway that leads to the locker room you were showing her what you drew that night.
“Ah, my number one admirer,” his voice rang out, you wanted the floor to swallow you whole. “Did you get my good side,” he asked. You rolled your eyes at him for what felt like the millionth time tonight.
“You only have good sides,” a whiny voice said and you cringed. Nat mirroring your expression but being much more subtle you’re sure.
“Hey babe,” Clint said as he wrapped his arm around Nat and kissed her temple. “Barnes,” he tipped his head toward his teammate.
“Barton,” Barnes said back, “you gonna introduce me to your friend?”
“Uh, she’s Nat's friend,” Clint said.
You shook your head and dismissed Clint with a smile.
“My name is…”
“I like Bunny,” Barnes cut you off suddenly. “I don’t do names for pretty ladies,” he stated. The girl hanging off his arm made a disgruntled noise and looked taken back by his open flirtation while she was right there. You felt a little bad for her.
“Nuh uh, I’m not one of those puck bunnies,” your eyes flicked to the girl hanging off his arm apologetically.
“Never said you were Sketch,” you scrunch your nose at the nickname.
“Original,” you sassed.
“I’ll figure one out,” he affirmed, you crossed your arms over your chest and shook your head.
“God you’re insufferable,” you muttered, glowering at him.
Tumblr media
“Is he always like that?” You asked as you sat down across from Nat and Clint in the booth at the pizza place. It was a local spot, well loved by the students that populated the town.
“Barnes?” Clint as he took a bite of his pizza, you nodded.
“Yeah, he’s all talk. He’s practically harmless,” you raised an eyebrow at Clint. “Off the ice, he’s hell on it.” You nodded. “So what’s the project you’re working on?” He asked.
“Movement, human movement. My art prof has a vendetta against me so I’m trying to go outside the box. Pietro offered to let me do the project on him at the track. But Prof. Grace would just say I made the safe choice,” I groaned. “And football season is over so I couldn’t do it on Thor.” Clint was familiar with Peitro and Wanda since they hung around Nat, same as Thor since the sports teams tended to run in the same circles outside games.
“Right, your roommates,” he nodded. You lived with Wanda and Pietro since the start of university, being you were good friends with them. You had met Nat your first year and subsequently met Clint when they started dated that same year. “You’re friends with Thor's brother aren’t you?” You nodded and smiled.
“Yeah, best friends since middle school,” you nodded. “So by extension I’ve known Thor and Hela since then as well,” you added afterwards.
“Why did you pick hockey?” You shrugged.
“Nat suggested I come and watch a practice. You guys move so fluidly on the ice it was easy to draw,” you answered simply, eating another piece of pizza. “And frustratingly Barnes is incredibly talented and moves beautifully, I might have to ask him if I can make him my focus,” you groaned and rubbed your temples. “But he’s insufferable.”
Clint let out a loud laugh at that and nodded, “he can be. He’s honestly not that bad once you can get past the jock personality.” You rolled your eyes.
“That’s like saying cocaine isn’t bad once you get past the cocaine,” you laughed. “I’m pretty sure the jock personality is just him.”
“Eh, he’s cocky, but he’s earned it. He’s pretty damn good,” Clint said.
The rest of the evening passed quickly as conversation drifted from the brunette that had been clouding your thoughts.
“Thanks for the lift,” you waved as Clint and Nat drove away. You quickly climbed the steps to your flat and entered.
“Wanda, Pietro?” You called as you dropped your keys in the bowl at the entrance.
“Living room princessa,” Pietro called sweetly.
“What’s you guys watching?” You asked as you walked into the living, stripping your jacket off.
“Silent hill,” Wanda answered.
“The one with Kit Harington?” She nodded, you smiled and joined them on the couch.
“How was practice?” Wanda asked softly.
“It was good, I’m going to ask Barnes if I make him the focus. And I think a bullet in the thigh would be easier to deal with than him,” you sighed leaning your head back against the couch. “I was considering asking Loki to come with me when I asked him. But I don’t think that’s a good idea anymore,” you muttered.
“Why's that?” Pietro asked.
“They seem to have some kinda beef,” you shrugged. “He wouldn’t get into it,” you said. “Bucky’s a player, Loki isn’t a fan of that. And he’s been around him at parties. He’s apparently one incident away from being benched for the season.” Pietro seemed to nod knowingly.
“I’m not surprised, he’s a bit hot headed. Gotten into a few fights with people. Usually with good intentions though. Seen him knock a dude out flat on his ass for trying to drug a girl at a party. He also tends to back-talk instructors,” Pietro said. “He doesn’t seem like a bad dude. A little cocky and a bit of a flirt. Seems harmless enough.” You nodded at Pietro’s explanation and watched the rest of the movie with them in silence.
You texted Loki to ask why he didn’t like Bucky. Curiosity getting the better of you. His answer came back in a couple short paragraphs.
He seems like trouble.
Like he can’t be stable for one week.
He looks down on the arts pretty openly as well. Well at least English.
And he was rude to Helena as well a couple times.
You nodded as you read the series of texts. Loki was pretty traditional and he was never a fan of bouncing from one girl to another. Bucky was very open about doing that.
He also gets pretty obnoxious at parties.
He’s had a few scandals as well. Skipping out on one girl to be with another. Bit of a womanizer.
Why?
You quickly typed back you were curious because he was mostly likely going to be the focus for your project.
I figured he would. Guys a prick but he’s good at what he does.
Everyone said that. From what you’ve seen he was pretty good at hockey, not that you could judge that very well. But there was more to life than a sport. You typed a quick thanks back and wished Loki a goodnight.
Wanda and Pietro both went to bed and you stayed curled up on the couch. You decided to do some research yourself. Typing Bucky’s name into the search engine, his stats came up, and few hockey related awards he’s won. Some articles about how good of a prospect he was. His draft position whatever that meant. Him and Steve were drafted together from what you could tell.
Then you saw a Reddit thread from your school's Reddit talking about him, the fights he’s been in, his lack of care for academics and some people fighting about him being their boyfriend and how he was a cheating piece of shit. He apparently got into an altercation with someone on the Polo team and he and the captain of your school's rival hockey team got into a pretty bad fight after a game last year.
Your eyes widened as you read about the fight Pietro mentioned, he was lucky the guy's family didn’t press charges from how badly Bucky beat him. Part of you knew that behavior wasn’t acceptable, but a smaller needy part of you found it insanely hot how far he went to protect the girl the dude tried to drug. You shook your head and closed the search and went to bed. You would ask him tomorrow after practice, which Nat was dragging you too again.

part one
*****
Your mind raced with thoughts as you made your way back to your friends, hoping they wouldn’t notice the change in your mood.
“What happened? What did you say?” Wanda asked excitedly.
“Did you shove him?” Natasha leaned in with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
You opened your mouth to tell them that you couldn’t find Bucky, but the tears that started to form in your eyes spoke before you could.
“Oh, honey,” Wanda turned her body to face you, both girls grabbing onto your hands. “Is this a bathroom situation?”
You started to nod, but quickly shook your head. “No, we can’t leave. You wanted to watch Pietro’s game.”
“I can watch my dumb brother play dumb hockey any other day,” Wanda offered you a cheerful smile, holding her hand out.
“It’s Best Friend Bathroom Break!” Natasha tried to brighten the mood as they led you to the bathroom, earning a small chuckle out of you.
“Wow, wonderful alliteration, Shakespeare.” You wiped away tears.
In the bathroom, surrounded by the dull hum of hand dryers and the flushing of toilets, your friends formed a protective circle around you.
Natasha leaned against the sink, crossing her arms. “Alright, spill. What did that idiot do?”
You took a deep breath, recounting the scene with Bucky, the random girl, and his hurtful words. Wanda’s face shifted from concern to an expression of fiery determination, and Natasha’s eyes blazed with anger.
“That dickhead!” Natasha pounded on the sink, earning a couple glances. “Men are just unbelievable. He doesn’t deserve you.”
“He’s clearly still upset about what happened earlier,” Wanda drew soothing patterns on your skin, her voice much quieter than Natasha’s was. “He’s acting like this because he’s hurt, and he’s confused about his feelings. So he’s resorting to his popular hot boy facade. I’m not making any excuses for him, but I want you to understand that he didn’t mean anything he said. Don’t take his words to heart.”
You nodded, appreciating Wanda’s insight. It was a bittersweet realization that perhaps Bucky’s actions were fueled by his own inner turmoil . You chuckled weakly. “Best Friend Bathroom Break is turning into a therapy session.”
“Damn right,” Natasha flipped her hair dramatically. “Now, are we gonna let that asshat ruin your night?”
Wanda nudged you with a comforting smile. “Let’s turn this night around. We’re going to get back out there, enjoy the game, and have a blast at the party afterwards. Screw Bucky and his drama.”
🎕
You gripped Natasha’s arm, hoping she remembered the promise she made in the car to not lose you. As expected, Wanda was long gone, probably giggling somewhere with her British boyfriend, Vision, so you held onto Natasha like a vice.
You had already made accidental eye-contact with Bucky multiple times during the short time you had been here, and you absolutely refused to have Bucky see you alone, confirming his words that you were indeed a loner, so you hung onto your friend like a lifeline.
Natasha, being ever perceptive, flashed you a comforting grin and led you to a group of people standing together. You recognized some of them: Maria, Maria’s girlfriend, Carol Danvers from your humanities class, Jane Foster from writing, and Darcy Lewis from political science.
The group greeted you and Natasha excitedly, and Maria pulled you in for a tight hug. “Sorry I left you with Bucky for so long. My business went a bit into overtime.” She winked at her girlfriend, who pushed Maria with a giggle.
You pretended to throw up all over Maria’s jacket, and Darcy snorted. “Me too, girl. I’ve been stuck watching them grab each others’ asses for the past twenty minutes.”
“You’re just jealous you don’t have anyone to grab your ass.” Maria stuck her tongue out at Darcy.
“Quiet, peasant. I don’t allow anyone’s crusty hands anywhere near my scrumptious butt. It’s VIP only.” Darcy crossed her arms over her chest with a playful shove.
“Hey, I’m gonna go find a bathroom, I’ll be right back.” Natasha leaned into your ear.
“Yeah, sure. Want me to come?”
“Nah, it’s okay. I might ‘accidentally’ bump into Steve Rogers on my way there.” She winked at you and you poked annoyingly at her stomach.
“Ooo, someone’s got a cru-ush,” You sang teasingly, but were quickly shut up by a swift kick to the calf.
“Don’t get too lost!” Natasha called over her shoulder as she cat-walked away.
“I could say the same to you!” You called back. As you turned back around to join your friends in their conversation, you noticed Peter Quill in the corner of your eye, waving at you excitedly.
You waved back, a smile tugging at your lips at his childish expressions. You weren’t sure if you had any romantic feelings for him, but he sure would be a fun friend to have.
He beckoned for you to come to him, pointing at Scott and making a face, like I can’t stand this guy, come help me!
You laughed silently as Scott swatted at Peter’s hand, accompanied by a string of passionate-looking words. “I’ll be right back, I’m gonna go talk to someone real quick.”
“Don’t wander off too far!” Maria warned with a smirk. “Natasha would probably kill me if I lost her best friend.”
“I think I’ll be able to walk across the room just fine, Maria,” You said as you made your way over to Peter and Scott. As you dodged drunk college students and handsy couples, you accidentally bumped into a hard wall of muscle.
You turned around slowly, praying it wasn’t Bucky. It wasn’t. It was Brock Rumlow, who was looking you up and down in a way that made your skin crawl.
Bumping into Bucky would’ve been better.
The very first time you attended a hockey game with Wanda, she was quick to point out Brock on the ice and tell you to stay the hell away from him. Sure, she pointed out Bucky too, but that was just because he was a player. But according to her and Pietro, Brock was just flat out a creep.
“Sorry,” You apologized quickly, turning around in hopes of speed-walking away.
Long fingers grabbed your wrist harshly, forcing you back around. Oh, fuck me.
“Hold on,” Brock smirked evilly, which for some odd reason reminded you of a Disney villain. “I don’t recognize you.”
“Um, okay?” You half expected him to pull out an evil villain scroll to add your name to his hit list.
“You look so stiff, no wonder you’re running into everyone.” He looked you up and down once again, clearly judging the jeans and sweater you had on.
Before you could defend yourself and point out the fact that he was actually the first person you ran into today, he continued talking.
“No drink in your hand, wearing that, running into everyone,” Brock nudged you roughly. “I can tell this is your first party.”
You gave up on correcting him, knowing he would keep yapping. “Don’t worry baby, I’ll take you under my wing. Wanna try some of this?” He sloshed the drink around in his cup, throwing an arm around your shoulder.
“No, thanks. I don’t really drink.” You shrugged his arm off, taking a step back. You were honestly surprised he actually gave you the chance to speak.
“You don’t drink? And you’re at a college party?” He stepped closer. His breath smelled like stale beer. “Bullshit.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t either,” You shrugged. “Save your kidneys early on.” You shocked yourself with your calm demeanor, especially since your mind was racing and praying that Natasha would randomly show up and tackle this weirdo from behind. Or at least sic her hunky blond crush onto him.
He narrowed his eyes, and you felt a shiver run down your spine as Brock’s predatory gaze intensified. It was evident he wasn’t used to someone rejecting his advances, and the dangerous glint in his eyes sent warning signals through your body.
“Kidneys are overrated anyways,” he replied with a sinister chuckle, his attempt at humor sending a chill through the air. He leaned in closer, close enough for you to cringe at the feel of his beer and Dorito breath on your skin.
The dimly lit room provided little comfort as you gravely realized that absolutely no one was watching. No one cared. Panic surged through you. Despite the people bustling around you, jostling and bumping into you, no one paid any attention.
“C’mon, take a sip.” He raised the cup, his arm snaking around your waist to hold you still.
You writhed around, but his death grip had you firmly planted in place. “Don’t touch me!”
“Stop being lame,” Brock raised the cup to your lips. “Just a sip.”
Your breath caught in your throat and your body went numb.
Just as he started to tilt the cup, you managed to knock it out of his hand with your thrashing. The drink spilled all over his shirt, and his grip on you loosened in surprise. Seizing the opportunity, you quickly pushed yourself away from him. As he reached out to grab you again, you shocked yourself by sending a well-aimed elbow jab straight to his neck.
As he doubled over and held his neck, you kicked him in the balls, earning a painful groan out of him. Yet, the victory was short-lived. As you turned around to get the hell out of there, he stomped down on your foot, and you winced in pain.
He managed to grab your wrist once again, his eyes fiery with rage. “You bitch,” he snarled angrily, spit flying from his mouth.
He tugged at your arm violently, leading you behind him with a bruising grip. You tried to plant your feet firmly in the ground to stop, and he suddenly turned around, leaning dangerously close to your face.
“Stop fighting, sweetheart,” he sneered, grabbing your waist. “The less of a fight you put up now and the easier you make it for me, the nicer I’ll be to you upstairs in bed.”
You slapped him across the face with your free hand. “You’re disgusting.”
He winded his arm back with anger, but suddenly, there was a blur of motion. You were forcefully ripped out of Brock’s clutches, and a large frame was standing between you two, gripping Brock’s collar with white knuckles.
Bucky.
“The hell you think you’re doing, Rumlow?” The rage in his voice was enough to send a shiver through your body. Bucky’s words echoed through the room, and everyone looked over.
Great. Now they wanna look?
Brock smirked, looking weirdly amused despite being stared down by a fuming Bucky Barnes in front of a crowd of people. The atmosphere crackled with tension, a palpable sense of anticipation settling over the room. The music seemed to fade into the background, leaving only the low hum of conversations and gasps.
“I was just having a little fun with the new girl,” Brock replied, his tone insolent. “Sorry man, didn’t realize she was your whore.”
Faster than you could blink, Bucky delivered a swift, bone-rattling punch to Brock’s jaw that sent him stumbling backwards. The room erupted in gasps, cheers, and ‘Do it again, bro!’s as the blow connected with a merciless crack.
Bucky advanced, and you managed to catch a glimpse of his face, seeing a side you’ve never seen of him before.
His face was red with fury, his jaw was clenched with anger, and dangerous emotions danced across his face. The icy blue storm in his eyes brewed violently.
Your body was frozen in place as you watched Bucky throw punches repeatedly onto Brock, who was now on the floor. Bucky climbed on top of him, his giant shoulders covering Brock’s battered up face from your view.
In the corner of your eye, you caught sight of Steve Rogers pushing through the crowd, towering over everyone, authority radiating off of him as people cleared his path. He seemed to be the only one brave enough to get in the way of Bucky’s wrath, reaching down to pull his best friend off of a writhing Rumlow.
Wanda and Natasha suddenly appeared on either side of you and each grabbed a hand, tugging you out of your daze.
“Come on honey, let’s go home,” Wanda said gently as the two girls led you to the front door, away from the fight.
“But Bucky-”
“He’ll be okay, just let him cool off,” Natasha reassured you.
You turned your head, catching a glimpse of Bucky thrashing mindlessly in Steve’s steady arms, a string of curses leaving his mouth that would make his mother smack him upside the head. He suddenly caught your gaze on him and he stopped flailing, his expression softening immediately with concern and care.
“Bucky,” you whispered quietly, knowing he wouldn’t have heard you, and you almost swore he whispered your name back.
Before you could succumb to your desire to run up to Bucky and smack him, tell him to stop looking at you like that, throw yourself into his embrace, and kiss him (yes, all in that order), Natasha’s comforting hand on the small of your back brought you back to reality as she led you out the door.
🎕
You glanced at the clock, your foot tapping and hands fidgeting.
4:27. Bucky should be here for his appointment in 3 minutes, assuming he was on time (which he usually wasn’t). You hoped his doctor had suddenly surprised him with a ‘Congrats! You don’t need physical therapy anymore!’ sometime earlier this week.
“Mr. Barnes will be here soon,” Dr. Framer said as he walked past you. “Could you go to the storage room and get some of the thicker resistance bands for his exercises while I finish up with Mrs. Davis?”
Thanks for crushing my hopes, Doc.
You obeyed the doctor, heading to the dimly lit storage closet and making a beeline for the resistance bands on the top shelf, but not before kicking a door stopper into the way so you wouldn’t get locked in.
You eyed the brown box on the top shelf, knowing there was no way in hell you were going to reach that. You looked around for help, but the dusty gray stepping stool that had a permanent home in the corner of the closet was nowhere to be found.
Screw it, you thought as you jumped for it, getting close every time but not quite being able to reach it. You hoped no one walked past the storage closet and saw you jumping up and down like a wasted rabbit, but of course, the universe was always against you.
“Need help?”
You spun around to see Bucky Barnes standing in the doorway, looking annoyingly amused. Your eyes immediately flickered down to his bruised up knuckles, and he seemed to notice, hastily shoving them into his pockets.
“I’m fine, thanks.”
Bucky, however, didn’t seem to mind your reply, strolling up to where you were standing and casually picking up the box off the shelf, placing it in your arms with a grin.
“Show off,” you grumbled.
The door suddenly shut with a loud slam, and you looked at Bucky in horror.
“Did you move the door stopper?”
“What door stopper?”
You groaned, dropping the box to bury your face in your hands. “Wonderful.”
“Calm down, Drama Queen. My phone’s right he-” Bucky patted his pockets, looking at you sheepishly. “I think I forgot it.”
“And mine’s in my bag,” you groaned.
“It’s fine, let’s just bang on the door. We’re right next to the waiting room anyways. The front desk lady will hear us.”
“Shannon never wears her hearing aids unless someone’s in the waiting room,” You shook your head. “She says everything sounds too annoying.”
“Fuck, no one’s in the waiting room, I just walked past.”
“And Dr. Framer’s finishing up with another patient right now,” you sighed, leaning against the shelf and sliding down onto the floor.
Bucky sat down on the floor next to you, and you pretended to ignore the slight flutter in your heart from the close proximity. Awkward tension filled the room as you both obviously were thinking about the same thing. You had so many things to say, to ask, to express, but nothing came out.
“Who the hell designed this stupid thing?” Bucky gestured towards the door.
“Probably someone with the same IQ level as you.” You caught the slight smile on Bucky’s face as you two fell back into the familiar comfort of arguing, ignoring the questions that were bound to be asked.
“Yeah sure, let’s see who’s still laughing once I break down this door with my athletic prowess and save the day.”
“How about we dial down on the heroic acts, superman.” You immediately regretted the words once they left your mouth. Bucky seemed to catch on to your unintentional reference to his fight with Rumlow. Tension filled the air once again, and you wanted to kick yourself.
“We, uh, should probably talk about that-” Bucky nervously rubbed his neck.
“I heard you and that girl talking after I left concessions,” you blurted out, unable to stop the word vomit.
Bucky grimaced, and you watched his eyes fill with guilt. “Yeah, I knew that would come back to bite me.”
“Care to explain, Barnes?” You looked over at him. “I honestly thought we were kind of getting along, but then you randomly got all pressed when Peter and Scott came in, and then you called me a nerd with no friends.”
Bucky shifted uncomfortably, the regret clear on his face. “Look, when that Quill guy came along and started flirting with you, I got . . . jealous.”
“Jealous?” Your eyebrows shot up. “Why? We aren’t even, uh, a thing.”
“I don’t know. I’ve never been good with this stuff.” He ran a hand through his hair, looking down. “Seeing you with someone else just got under my skin, I guess. I saw you smiling at him and laughing at his jokes, and it got me all messed up. I wanted you to look at me the way you were looking at him.”
“Oh.” You were quiet for a bit. “What about with that girl?”
Bucky winced. “I was . . . saving face, I guess? I didn’t want to admit to myself that I was bothered by the Quill thing, so I pretended like I didn’t care.” He took a deep breath, turning to look you in the eye. Sunlight streaming from the small window in the corner danced on Bucky’s face with elegance, showing you something you’ve never seen on his face before.
Vulnerability.
“After I saw you and Quill, I guess I was just really upset, insecure, and confused about my own feelings for you, so I basically ran to someone else. And the first person I saw happened to be Dot. I just needed to feel wanted, you know? Like a sense of validation.”
You nodded slowly. “Look, Bucky, I get it. Emotions can be messy, and we don’t always make the best decision when we’re upset. But honesty goes a long way. You should've told me instead of running away. I had no idea what was going on inside your head.”
“I know.” Bucky looked ashamed as he fiddled with his fingers, his eyes trained down.
“But I’m really glad that you’re telling me this now.” You took his hand gently, an unfamiliar feeling rushing over you. It was the feeling of being able to do everything without fear when Bucky was by your side. His warm hand in yours was comforting, a connection that reassured you in ways words couldn’t express.
He scooted closer with a warm smile as you two settled into a comfortable silence, the low hum of the air conditioning being the only noise in the background.
“Look, Steve sat me down this weekend and knocked some sense into me. Then he called me Ma, and she knocked some sense into me too. I’ve been an idiot, but I’m working on it, for what it’s worth.”
Your eyes met his, and a small smile tugged at the corners of your lips. “Well it’s a good thing Steve has some sense to spare. I appreciate the effort, Bucky.”
“Yeah, he’s got plenty to go around,” he chuckled, his thumb rubbing gently across the back of your hand. “I want you to know that I really care about you. I want to make things right.”
As a smile spread across your face, he continued. “I don’t want you to think that I take you for granted. You mean a lot to me, and I want to be better. For you.”
You squeezed his hand gently. “You mean a lot to me, too, Bucky. More than I ever realized.”
“I thought you hated me,” Bucky teased with a smirk.
“I thought so too.” You sighed dramatically. “I guess I’ll have to get rid of my ‘How to Handle Bucky Barnes: The Irritating Assshat’ survival handbook now.”
“Impressive. Does it come with a ‘How to Handle my Irritating Crush on Bucky’ chapter?”
“That’s a work in progress.” You smirked. “Didn’t exactly expect to find myself having a heart-to-heart with you in a dusty closet.”
“Life’s full of surprises,” he remarked, a deep warmth in his eyes.
“And you, James Buchanan Barnes, are the most unexpected one,” you admitted, your tone softening.
“You stalker,” he gasped accusingly. “Digging through patient files to find my full name?”
“Oh biscuits,” you rolled your eyes. “Looks like you caught me.”
“If you wanted me that bad, you could’ve just asked, Doc.”
“I’ll be sure to add that lovely advice to the handbook. How does this sound: ‘Hey Bucky, I’ve secretly been harboring feelings for you. Wanna go make out in the storage closet?’ .”
“I’m pretty sure I would’ve appreciated the honesty,” he laughed.
“You’re impossible.”
“You love it.”
“Debatable.”
“I think you meant to say dateable.”
“You're pushing your luck, Barnes.” You nudged him playfully.
“Admit it. I’m growing on you.”
“Like a stubborn weed.”
“A weed you secretly enjoy having around.”
You feigned annoyance, but the giddy feelings in your chest told a different story. “Don’t get too comfortable, Barnes. You’ve still got a long way to win me over completely.”
“Challenge accepted.” He leaned his back against the shelf with a content sigh, smiling with closed eyes. After a moment of silence, Bucky scooted even closer, pressing his warm body against yours.
He grinned bashfully. “You’ve probably figured this out by now, but I really like you, Doc. Like I really really like you. Talking to you just feels so natural, you know? I feel . . . fuck I’m trash with words.” Bucky took a deep breath. “I feel at home. With you.”
Your heart skipped a beat. “You feel at home when I’m being mean to you?”
Bucky chuckled, the sound echoing in the cramped space. “It’s like . . . I don’t know, you challenge me. Keep me on my toes. But it’s not just that. It’s the way you are, the way you see things. I feel like I can be myself around you, no pretenses. Plus, I know you’ll call out all my bullshit. Like my mom and Steve.”
“That’s a tough crowd to be compared to,” you teased, feeling a pleasant warmth in your chest.
Bucky nodded. “Yeah, but you belong up there with them.”
You smiled, resting your head on Bucky’s shoulder. “I like you too, Barnes. Even though you annoy the crap out of me.”
Bucky laughed heartily. “Scout’s honor. You look so cute when you’re annoyed.” He gently raised your chin with his hands, dipping his head down to look you in the eyes. “All that fuckboy bullshit? I’m tired of it, baby. I only want you.”
“Are you sure you wanna be stuck with the bland vanilla, Barnes? Too late, no take backs.” You teased him playfully, ignoring the rapid beating of your heart.
“You’re more than just bland vanilla,” Bucky frowned, thinking. “You’re . . . spicy pistachio.”
You snorted at Bucky’s unexpected description. “Spicy pistachio? Is that your attempt at a compliment?”
He grinned, his eyes lighting up. “Absolutely. It means you’re a rare and exciting flavor, something I didn’t know I needed until I tried.”
“Well I’m glad you’re such a fan of spicy pistachio, Barnes.”
“The biggest fan.” He looked at you with such gentle care, you thought you would melt under his gaze.
You shoved his shoulder roughly, averting yourself from his deep stare.
“What was that for?” He feigned a wince, just to give you some satisfaction.
“On behalf of Nat.” You just had to make sure you got the shove out of the way before your brain completely surrendered to his sweet talk.
He just smiled knowingly.
You couldn't help but glance down at his roughed-up knuckles, and guilt flooded through you. Bucky noticed, lifting your chin up once again with his gentle touch. The reassurance in his eyes said it all: Don't worry about it, baby.
“I never said thank you for what you did at the party last week.”
“You don’t have to thank me,” he said as he leaned in closer. “Just doing my job.”
“Your job?” You raised your eyebrows. “And what job might that be?”
Bucky’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “Guardian of the spicy pistachio, of course.”
You laughed, your cheeks suddenly heating up when you realized how close Bucky’s face was to yours. He came in closer, if that was even possible, his eyes gazing into yours with deep admiration.
“You’re so annoying.”
“Only I can get you so riled up,” Bucky smirked. “It’s truly a gift.”
“Yeah,” your voice got quiet. You forgot the snarky reply you were about to retort back with. “Only you.”
His eyes flickered down to your lips.
“The spiked fruit punch at your party sucked,” you added as your brain malfunctioned. “It made Wanda sick.”
Bucky leaned closer. “Noted. I’ll let Thor know.”
“You should really consider investing in some Febreze. The whole place smelled like sweat.”
“Noted. I’ll tell Steve.” He leaned in a bit more, his lips almost brushing against yours.
Amidst the closeness, you couldn’t help but let out more observations as your mind raced. “Also, your playlist needs a serious upgrade. I think I heard ‘Eye of the Tiger’ at least three times.”
Bucky brought his hands up to rest on your cheeks, leaning in even closer. “Noted. I’ll tell Sam.”
“Just kiss me already.”
“Noted, baby.” Bucky finally closed the gap between you with a smile as your lips met in a sweet, long-awaited kiss. His soft lips moved gently and his thumbs caressed your cheeks lovingly.
The world outside the closet seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of you in a moment suspended in time, finally acknowledging the feelings that had been swirling beneath the surface.
As the kiss deepened, you pulled away slightly, a playful glint in your eyes.
“You know, I think this is the most action this storage closet has seen in years. We should charge rent.”
Bucky chuckled against your lips, “In that case, we should give it a good show. You know, make the experience worth its money.”
Bucky pulled you into another kiss, his laughter merging into the warmth of the moment.
The door suddenly opened, light entering the dark closet as you and Bucky pulled apart frantically, scrambling for excuses. Dr. Framer was standing in the doorway with multiple emotions changing on his face. First surprise, then confusion, then a knowing smile directed at Bucky.
“You know, I could always tell you had a crush on her.”

Avengers ranking for who would be worst to best at ice hockey?
the scream i scremt upon seeing this....nonathy.... stop calling me out like this (no actually continue i love this sm. my hockey brain is so happy w this question). HERE is the answer
worst to best:
logan: it's not that he's too short, its that he's too short and he keeps getting suspended for dodory (he doesn't care enough)
wanda: winger, 4th line (not very good). it's not that she's bad, but she doesn't live and breathe the sport and she has no skill at defensive plays. her style is chaotic and her sauce (passes) are so sweet tho.
jessica (drew): a finesse winger. she's okay at stick handling but the physicality of fighting along the boards etc. doesn't come natural to her. gets into fights for chirping
peter: whiz kid, #1 draft pick narrative, probably sustains a heavy injury in his first season up that doesn't get proper care and he's traumatized by the experience. he's good at hockey, but i don't know that hockey is good for him.
tony: a goalie with a damn good eye and impeccable reflexes, but has some health complications and has to enter into employee assistance program a couple of times. has probably scored on the other team on a night when his team lost.
jan: winger who is wicked fast but gets in her own head a bit too much. excellent at gloving it down in the air and bad at cherry picking in the blue - gets called for goalie interference a decent amount.
sam: center/winger. he's versatile and damned fast, has a big stride skate and uses a whippy stick but he has a tendency to shoot high and he's not great on the PK. a balance to steve.
clint. a winger who can hit top shelf from the blue line. really good actually. great at zone entries, terrible at puckdrops. not so great at defense or skating backwards.gets annoyed when people don't remember he's deaf and ask why he didn't hear the whistle.
steve: a d-man with a wicked slapshot. stupid good and scores far too much for a d-man but says it like it's no big deal and won't let anyone compliment him instead of the team. has trouble on the powerplay and gets flack for not being more of an enforcer on ice.
luke: started as a forward, becomes a d-man. a playmaker w a very aware playing style. super rigid stick (haha) and really good at forcing turnovers. gets frustrated by varying interpretations and applications of league rules and doesn't let it go w the refs; a good leader but sometimes gets drawn into fights at key moments.
carol: center. fantastic player, never quits, shoot out ace, rink rat, spends too much time thinking about the flex of her stick and her wrist shots. she likes defense and is seeing a sports therapist to work on her on ice and off ice balance. she says she's the best because she wants it the most.
cheers if you read this whole thing. a cookie for you, if you want anyone else, just ask, more than happy to elaborate, etc. 😘

series m.list ✩ ══╡˚2.3k words˚╞══ ✩ wanda m.list
Practice has been going well, better even. There’s been an increase in number since people started to find out that wanda has experience on the ice as a player on a professional team. The stands have become packed, families and friends taking up every corner, a completely contrast from before. You remember the days when you first came with your nephew, sitting and having a seven feet distance from another person. Tyler’s since graduated from wanda’s class, now attending another with a different coach.
It was a sad day for him, hugging your girlfriend tight and exclaiming how he wishes to have her as a coach for every class. She had laughed, resting a hand on his back and reassured him that she’ll attend his other classes. She even went as far as to mention private classes, saying they can spend time together on the ice. A smile had come upon your face as you watched the two interact, thankful your nephew is able to have such a wonderful relation with his coach, your girlfriend.
Since then you’ve been attending his classes with Wanda. You can’t help yourself, curling a hand through her arm to hold her close. You complain that it’s the cold, but you both know it’s a shit excuse. Regardless, she’s never going to turn you down, if anything she’s pulling you tighter and pressing a kiss to your head.
“He’s improved a lot. Lately he’s been practicing outside his house with some friends on the street.”
“That’s probably the only reason why he’s able to skate in a straight row now. Do you think he’ll continue to play?”
“I think so. It’s all he talks about, but of course we can’t say definitive terms. He could fall out of love with it in a year and choose like baseball.”
“If he were to choose another sport it’d be football, not baseball. His favorite part of hockey is running into others, he forgets there’s an actual game going on.”
You stifle a laugh, “he’s trying.”
He proved Wanda’s words to be correct because the next second he’s slamming into one of the team members, pummeling the two into the wall. The coach had come to talk to you after, seeking you where you stood by the concession stand. You had a hand on Wanda’s arm, informing her of where you’ll be.
You were paying for the snack, thanking the person behind the counter. He had stood behind you just out of your line of sight, so just enough that you ran into him when turning around. His shirt smelled of sweat and his cologne, a lot of his cologne, so much so it overwhelmed you.
“Hey, you’re tyler’s mom, right?”
“No, just his aunt.”
“My bad. Sorry that was terribly rude of me, I was going to say you look good for your age.”
“Thank you, that’s very kind.”
“Of course,” he flashes a smile, leaning onto one of the tables beside him, “I’ve notice how often you come, it’s great that you’re supporting him like this. Most kid’s don’t have such a supportive aunt.”
“I try. My brother and his wife are busy, so I take over. He’s means well but he’s still a young teen.”
“Yes. He’s nothing new. A lot of teens enjoy the physical aspect to the game, it’s normal for them to be competitive even with each other.”
A few minutes have gone by, enough time for concern to begin swirling through Wanda’s mind. She’s relieved to see you’ve not gone missing and that you’re all in one piece, standing only a few feet from her.
“That’s my coach,” Tyler starts, seeing how Wanda’s attention was directed at the tow of you.
“I know,” she deadpans, turning her attention back on your nephew, “finish untying your shoes.”
“I know,” he mimics, tone lowering to frustrate her further.
You’re walking back over with a grin plastered on your face. Tyler’s already grabbing at the drink you got, pulling it from your hands to open it already.
“Just talked with your new coach, Tyler. It seems you have a track record with finding amazing coaches.”
Already Wanda didn’t like him. She kept quiet about her disdain, knowing how important it was to you that Tyler doesn’t come to contact with a terrible one as you had.
It grew difficult. Each practice he always seemed to find you, drawing out a long conversation with you. Usually it’s fine, as a coach herself she understands the important of keeping up with the families, but this was excessive. The constant parade of compliments directed at you were unnecessary. He wouldn’t really care to talk to Tyler, and as far as she knew, Wanda didn’t exist around him. He’s either dumb, or he’s choosing to be ignorant towards the intimacy between you two.
What brought her to the edge was when he began to touch you, a hand on your shoulder or the back of your waist. It was in moments where it could’ve been excused; done to either move you out of the way or make sure you don’t trip.
You were sweet, engaging in a conversation he had started yet again down at the end of the bleachers. Wanda had her attention set on Tyler skating around before practice, eyes flickering to where the two of you stood every minute.
“I have a conference this weekend and we’re allowed to bring a plus one. Would you be interested in joining me?”
“Oh. I already have someone that I’m going with. So I won’t be going with you, but I will see you there.”
He looks disappointed, eyes shooting to meet Wanda’s, “I’ll see you there then.”
Wanda doesn’t like that man.
You walk up the stairs all sweet-like, sitting beside her and placing a kiss to her cheek, “when’s that coach award event again?”
“Saturday, 7PM.”
You hum, leaning your head on her shoulder, “you better win an award.”
“If not, I have you.”
An elbow shoves into her side, “you’re such a sap.”
“No, I just love you,” she murmurs, pressing her lips against yours, feeling like she’s won when she catches the coach looking. She had hoped the soft public display of affection would be enough of a sign to back off, but it wasn’t.
The weekend came soon enough. Wanda standing by the door with her keys in hand as she waits for you to join her.
“Beautiful,” she says when you step down, opening the door for you.
“I hope you win one award, that would be amazing.”
“It would look great for my public imagine,”she laughs at the look you give her, “you know I don’t care about that, love.”She gives your thigh a squeeze before backing the car out of her apartment complex.
She should’ve known he’d be stuck to you most of the night. Wanda tries to engage in the conversation, but he tunes her out, keeping his attention on you. Ever so sweet you try to include her, smiling back at her but this time it’s not enough to quell how she’s feeling.
“Hey Micheal, can you go grab her another drink?”
“Wanda, I can’t—“
She shuts you up by pinching at your waist, cutting your sentence off. He looks mildly annoyed, “sure.”Once he’s turned around, she’s guiding you out of the room.
“Wanda there’s only like sixteen minutes until the ceremony—“ your mouth goes numb when you realize where she’s walking you towards. There’s a closet at the end of the hall, tiny and small as its only purpose is to hold supplies for the janitors. Tonight it will be used for another matter.
“That’s enough time,” she says lowly, shutting the door behind her, enclosing the two of you in darkness.
She’s lifting you with her hands under your thighs, dropping you down onto the extra school desk stored away in the room. Her body’s leans into you, hands on either side of your body as she kisses you passionately. They turn messy, trailing from the corner of your lips to end up on the bottom side of your neck. You gasp when she bites down, a hand reaching to push at her chest.
“Wan—wait.”
She doesn’t listen, too focused on making your neck show an array of purple marks. You whine, squirming in her hold as she leaves one after the other, stopping only on areas that you’re sensitive to. She’s severely quiet, attentive to every heavy breath and sound coming from you. You’re weak, arms wrapped around her neck, head pressed into the wall behind you. You’ve completely given up control, neck tilted back to give her more room.
“Oh—” you shiver when she moves towards the spot behind your neck. Your reaction gave her another reason to press her lips against it, nipping at the skin there.
Her ministrations leave you wet, your hips grind down onto the desk below you to try to seek relief. Wanda coos, cold fingers sliding under your dress, finding the wetness between your thighs. You cry out when she thrusts two in, pushing through your tight walls. It’s intoxicating, the wet sounds filling the room, turning you on even more.
“Ah! Wands—you—“
She’s shushing you, lips on yours to keep you quiet. Her fingers are splitting you open, angling perfectly towards the spot that makes your back arch. Her thumb catches onto your clit with each thrust, brushing perfectly to make you see white. You weave your fingers into her hair, moaning into her mouth when she bites at your bottom lip.
You’ve completely forgotten about the event, and most importantly, Michael. You’re clenching onto her finger, arousal covering her hand and dripping onto the wood below you. You choke on a moan when she’s guiding you to lift your left foot onto the desk, the position spreading you open to allow her fingers to push deeper. The bottom of your dress slips up, clothing pooling around your waist. You feel your orgasm build, a series of whimpers spilling from you.
“Fucking say my name when you come,” she demands, holding back moan when she hears your strangled whine after she brought her hand down onto your thigh. The way your cunt squeezes around her fingers then makes her weak.
“Like that?”
She’s cocky, hand coming down harder on that same spot.
“ah! wands please—“
Your body jerks after her fifth slap, mouth dropping open in a silent scream. She nuzzles against your head resting on her shoulder. You relaxed into her hole, breathing heavily as you come down from your high.
It was fine until wanda carried you into the bathrooms to clean off and you caught a glimpse of yourself in the mirror, easily spotting the splotches painting your neck.
You leaned over the sink to get a better view, eyes snapping between the marks; the one by your ear, another under the strap of your dress, one more at the base of your neck. You weren’t aware of the severity of her actions in the moment, your mind was too busy trying to deal with the fuzziness spreading throughout your body.
“Was that okay,” she asks from where she stands by the entrance.
“Very,” you mumble, looking back to her with a smile.
“Hey, I want to apologize. I knew something was wrong,” you say, grabbing a paper towel from the machine, “he was a jerk to you. Like just earlier he wasn’t letting you get a word in, but I really just thought he was being nice at first.”
“You’re fine, love.”
You wet the towel, rubbing warm water over the cloth to get it wet, “you say that but I still feel bad.”
She crosses the room to grab at your wrist after seeing what you were doing, “why’re you trying to rub the marks off?”
“Because?”
She raises an eyebrow, “because? What?”
“This is your event, I don’t want you to loose your job over me.”
“I won’t,” she tosses the towel away, “I knew what I was doing when I gave you those.”
“But the staff—“
“There’s enough of them screwing around.”
“Oh.”
She huffs, hooking a finger under the hem of your dress, drawing it up your thigh until the red, swollen marks on your thighs from where she was aiming her hand earlier begin to show. You hate how affected you get by the sight of them, thighs squeezing together.
You were only meant to be gone for ten minutes. That was the original goal, but she began to fold with how you were looking at her. Your eyes were dark, locking onto hers from within the mirror. She had you pinned to the counter in seconds, forcing you to watch how easily you melt under her touch.
Footsteps echoed throughout the hallway, getting closer to where the two of you stood. You had begun to push back, mumbles on how she needs to stop so they don’t get caught, but it’s like she knew. You caught on later, realizing it was Micheal by the sound of his voice calling out to you.
“Wanda, he—“
She’s slapping a hand over your mouth, pulling you back against her chest. You look over your shoulder, finding Micheal freeze after entering into the room. Wanda had you in a position only he could dream of. He was like a fish out of water, mouth opening and closing as he processed what he was looking at. The marks on your body, eyes glossy and faraway even as you look in his direction. The muscles in Wanda’s arm flex as she presses her hand tighter against your mouth. You’re absolutely dripping, excitement pooling from the behavior this man was bringing out of her.
“I was worried… but I see you’re.. okay.”
“I see you’ve met my girlfriend, Micheal?”

“Where are we staying?” I asked, crossing my legs on the couch and flipping through the channels before switching to Netflix.
Siobhan settled next to me with a bowl of popcorn.  She popped a few kernels in her mouth with a shrug. I took a handful of popcorn and glanced at my phone. Where are Wanda and Natasha? They should be here. I set my phone down and ate the popcorn.  “Figured we drive up Thursday,  spend Friday at the lake, and head to the lodge.” I nodded, and my phone buzzed at my side. I swiped at the screen and checked the message, seeing a text from Natasha: Running late, picked up sodas, candy, and a few rentals. I smiled and clicked my screen off.
“Nat and Wanda are on their way,” I mumbled with a mouthful of popcorn.
“Why are you and Steve the way you two are?” Siobhan asked, making me cringe.  I shrugged. He had no reason to dislike me, and we were no kids anymore; I understood if I were still that little girl who followed them everywhere. But I wasn't. He was always so rude when everyone else received some niceness.  Bucky did what he could to keep things friendly, but every time he was around, it always ended up with Steve running his mouth and picking on me.
“I honestly don't know,” I muttered. “He's just always kinda hated me.” I wasn't entirely wrong. He always saw me as the annoying little sister of his best friend—one who followed them everywhere. But I also helped them sneak out and go to bonfires and parties in high school.
“What are you guys doing?” Bucky’s voice echoed behind the couch, and I felt the back sink down as he leaned on it.  He ruffled my hair, and I swatted his hand away. He laughed and swung his body over the side, practically landing on my lap. I shoved him off with a playful look,
“Get off me, you freak!” he put his hand on his chest in a universal sign of hurt, and I rolled my eyes. “You're fine; aren't you supposed to be the serious one?”  he shrugged and shoved his hand into the popcorn bowl, making Siobhan yelp. He grabbed a large handful, shoveling it in his mouth, half spilling it onto the floor and couch. I groaned, and he looked down.
“I'll clean it later.” Although that's not what it sounded like with his mouth full. A knock on the door sounded a few moments later, and I called out.
“Come in!” Wanda and Natasha came in arms full of grocery bags and DVDs. And trailing behind them was Steve. My face heated up with shame, and I quickly flitted my eyes away, attempting not to meet his gaze or capture his attention. I stood up and started the fort, something we always did on movie nights. They all piled in the living room, and Bucky and Nat moved to the armchair, Natasha on his lap. Steve leaned against the fireplace, an incredulous look on his face. “….What the fuck are you doing?” I raised my brows, not responding to his harsh tone. What does it look like? It was pretty obvious what I was doing—a large pillow fort.
“I’m building a pillow fort,” I stated, draping the blankets over the top. He observed my work, and Bucky watched with an amused grin. I ignored him and set up the pillows and everything else, making it big enough for everyone.
“Isn’t that a little childish?” he questioned with a furrowed brow.
“C’mon, Steve, don't be a grump.” Wanda said, “Didn’t you guys do this in your childhood and teenage years for movie nights.”
“Does that mean you don’t want to join me?” I asked, not letting him answer. There were several beats of awkward silence, and I turned my gaze to him. He stared, jaw set, and everyone just watched our staring match. I knew he would join, and he always loved movie nights when we were kids; he just never wanted to admit to it.
“…..Move over.” Soon, everyone was piled under the fort with their snacks and drinks. The sun was finally fully down while High School Musical played on the TV.
Steve
There was a painful closeness, too close for comfort. She was almost in my lap with everyone in this stupid fort because everyone didn't know personal space. I let out a quivering breath, taking a bite of Natasha's brownie. I scooted out of my spot. Bucky looked away from the TV in my direction. He frowned softly, and a confused look was etched onto his features. “Hey man, you okay?” Buck whispered in my direction. I nodded, moving into the kitchen, beelining to the sink to splash water on my face. I hopped up on the counter, dangling my legs. I sat there silently for a while, just hearing the quiet voices from the TV spilling into the kitchen. I got down and went to the fridge, grabbing a beer. I pop the bottle open, taking a swig.
“You comin’ back?'' a faint voice reverberated in the silent room, and I set the beer on the counter. Sage ‘sunshine’ Barnes stood a little away with a confused gaze.
“Yeah, I just wanted a beer.”
Sage
“You're gonna miss the best part,” Siobhan complained as I stood up. I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
“We've seen all three multiple times since we were kids.. I’ll be back,” I made my way into the kitchen; Steve was sitting on my counter, sipping a beer. “You comin’ back?'' my faint voice reverberated in the silent room. My confused gaze was on him.  He set the beer down, the glass making a soft ‘clink,’ and turned toward me.
“Yeah, I just wanted a beer,” he muttered boredly. He raised his eyebrows when I shifted my weight. He jumped down with a thud, drinking the last of the beer. “I don't need you hovering, Sunshine,” He said the nickname like he always did, bored and apathetic.
“I wasn’t—” he walked up, backing me against the wall. He was so close I could smell the beer on his breath mixing with his cologne.
My blue eyes went wide at the proximity.
“You're hovering. It's annoying. I'm twenty-six, and I wanted a beer. You don’t have to babysit me.”
I swallowed, crossing my arms. “I was just going to say it's your turn to pick a movie. Hence why I asked if you were comin’ back.”  He backed away, a scowl etching on his face.
My phone buzzed, and a text came across my screen. One that sent a chill down my spine:  hm, I wonder if he was thinking about you the other day. I know I have.
My hands shook, and Steve looked at me with a quirked brow.  His jaw ticked, and his eyes flicked to my phone. “What’s got you wigged?” My hand shook as I handed him my phone, and he kissed his teeth, pulled out his phone, and texted, “Sam will handle it.”
My skin was itching. My throat felt tight as I rolled on my side, colliding with something soft. Alpine. My eyes shot wide open, and panic set in. I looked around the fort and saw Wanda and Steve. Siobhan had moved to the armchair, and Bucky and Natasha were nowhere in the living room. I sat up the best I could and started to shake Wanda so she would wake up. She rubbed her eyes, and they widened at seeing Alpine.
“Get my Epi!” I gasped. She nodded, quickly climbing out of the fort. She sprinted into the kitchen, where I kept my spare. The commotion from her opening and slamming the drawers jolted Steve awake. He stopped the minute he saw my state. Wanda rushed back in, got the pen set, and jammed it into the upper part of my thigh. She turned to Steve and spoke in a panicked tone.
“We have to get her to the ER. The ambulance won’t get here fast enough.” Without a second thought, he picked me up in his arms and headed to the front door, leaving Wanda to wake Siobhan. We all squeezed into Steve’s truck, my head in Wanda's lap in the back seat.
I woke not much later (at least not that long) to the beeping of a heart monitor and muffled screaming, and I noticed a weight on the bed. Siobhan was resting her head on the bed at my feet. And Wanda was in the chair.
“She could have died, Buck; what if we hadn’t been down there!” A voice boomed, making me cringe. “What part about that doesn’t make sense! You were careless, and she barely got Wanda to get her Epi!”
“He’s been fuming since Bucky arrived with Natasha,”  Wanda said, making me jump.
“If she were in her room and you were too occupied, she wouldn’t have been able to call for help!”
A few seconds later, the door opened, revealing a teary-eyed Bucky. It made me frown, and he came and crouched next to my bed, opposite where Siobhan was. “I am so so sorry.” There was a knock on the open door, and I saw Steve standing there, jaw set, eyes angrily boring into Bucky’s back.
“The nurses said that you can go home after some fluids.” I nodded and played with the hospital's blanket. Siobhan stirred, sitting up and stretching her arms. She really could sleep through almost anything. “And you must stay cat-free while your brother cleans your house.”
His eyes did not leave Buck’s back, and Bucky nodded. “He's right.”
“Kinda always hated you, huh?”  Siobhan teased as we stepped into her parents' house. I side-eyed her. “Nobody else would have done that. They would have waited until the ambulance.”
“Bucky would have.” I shrugged. I unlaced my Converse with a sigh, placing them next to her shoes. She scoffed, hung up her coat, and picked up my bag. It wasn’t entirely wrong. He would have. I forgot I set the bag down.
“He doesn’t count, and he's your brother.” I rolled my eyes as we walked into her kitchen. “You thirsty?” I shrugged, and she pulled two water bottles from the fridge and handed me one. I broke the seal and put it to my lips, not realizing how thirsty I truly was.  I screwed the cap back on.  She rummaged through the fridge again and pulled out a plate filled with red bean mooncakes. “Moon cakes?” I nodded, and she set them on the counter, grabbing two plates. She found two medium-sized plates and plated three on each of them. We made our way upstairs to her room and sat on her bed. I broke one in half, taking a bite.
“I still can’t believe Bucky left his door open.”
“Yeah, he’s usually more careful.”
“He was just more focused on getting his dick wet.”
I practically gagged on the mooncake with a grimace. “Okay, not the image I wanted.” She shrugged, moving on to her second one. I shivered and shook my head, picking up the other half.
“What? It's true,”
“I'm aware,” I said with my mouth full. “It’s just not an image I wanted, and Ama would be pissed,” I swallowed the bite. “I mean, we aren't practicing Jews or anything. We don't even keep kosher. At least, Buck and I don't. I don't even remember if it's frowned upon. But our mom is against premarital stuff.” She nodded, and it suddenly hit her: we didn’t have our waters.
“I'll be back.”
She came back and shut the door five minutes later. Crossing her legs as she sat on her bed with me.  I took it and took a sip after I unscrewed the cap. She chewed her lip, and I eyed her. “Is there something you want to ask?” I asked, wiping my mouth after I swallowed.
“Are we just gonna ignore that you have a crush or something on Steve?”
I gave a wry laugh and shook my head.
“I'm serious, Sage.” She shrugged. “You are dealing with some serious feelings.” I rested my hands on my neck after running my hands through it.  I didn’t have feelings. I was just running things he said. Things he saw. There were feelings, just not feelings.
“There are no feelings, just embarrassment and odd, unusual comments.” I groaned. It made her raise both brows. Yeah, that was the reaction I was expecting.
“Mhm.”
She hesitated, and her brows knitted together. “....Like what…?” So I told her…everything. The lingering looks at me in the kitchen, the suggestive comments. Everything that has happened in the past few weeks.  She stayed silent, but her molten amber eyes widened. I guess she was trying to digest everything I told her. “He really said, Do I turn you on sunshine?”
I nodded.
“Oh…no.”
“Too late for an oh no. If it gets back to Buck, Steve is dead.”
“I cleaned everything,” Bucky said when I entered the house. “And don't be mad.”
I regarded him carefully. “What did you do?”
“Not me, not this time, but Mom and Dad called; they found out.” My face paled—the worst possible outcome.
“No, no, no!” I shouted, panic rising in my voice. “They don’t know we're not kosher or that Wanda moved out—the one friend I lived with who is also Jewish. Or that you play hockey. God Bucky! They are gonna murder us!” he put his hands on my shoulders and looked me in the eyes.
“Sage, calm down!" I stared at him, and my jaw set. I'm pretty sure you could see steam come out of my ears at him, telling me to calm down.
“No, I will not calm down!”
“They aren't coming to Washington.” I kissed my teeth and bent down, grabbing a spare shoe. I smacked him on the arm, making his eyes widen in surprise. “Ow!”
“Are you done hitting me now?”
“Don't do that to me!” I yelled while smacking him a few more times. “You scared me!” I dropped the shoe and stomped into the living room. He followed me, and I fell back onto my couch. He sat on the armchair and leaned forward onto his knees.
“Are you done now?”
I nodded.
“I didn’t mean to leave the door to my bedroom open,” He admitted. “I just got caught up with Natasha, and everyone was asleep; I didn't think she would come downstairs.”
“Where will she be while we’re at Siobhan’s lake house and lodge? Is she staying with someone?”
He nodded. “Yelena, Nat’s younger sister.” I nodded and sat up. “And I'll move in with Steve or Nat when we’re back from the vacation if you call it that.”
I smirked and shook my head.
“You don’t have to go to the lake house or the lodge, you know.” I shrugged. He leaned back and began typing on his phone, “Don’t you have to meet with Steve, Nat, and what’s her face?”
He laughed and licked his lip, “You mean Yelena?” I nodded, tucking my hair behind my ear. He shook his head and raised a brow.
“Is Steve dating Yelena?” I asked, “She doesn’t seem interested.” He chuckled, standing up. He shrugged and tied his hair up, and I grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around myself.
“You would be correct. She is asexual,” He said with a hair tie between his teeth. “She’s not interested in any of the idiots I hang out with, not even Sam.”
I rolled my eyes.  “Sam is the smartest of you three.” He put his boots on and laced them tightly. He glared playfully and chuckled dryly. I shrugged. He shook his head, a few strands of hair falling from his bun and into his face.
“Haha, very funny.”
“Why are you asking if Steve's dating?”
I shrugged. “He just seems, I dunno, bored. I dunno, if that's the right word.”
Steve
“So you picked her up and took her to the hospital yourself?” Asked Sam as we sat at a table. I nodded. “Sage? Bionic staring machine’s little sister that you always complain about?”
“Yeah, thanks for that,” Bucky said sharply. I shrugged with a short chuckle, grabbing my whiskey.  I took a sip, the alcohol smooth with a slight burn on my throat.  “It's not like you haven't known her since she was five.”
I snapped my fingers, pointing at him. “That’s exactly why I find her annoying.”
“She hasn’t done anything,” he pointed out. “You rarely see or talk to her.”
Oh, she’s done plenty.
She's undoubtedly not five anymore, thinking boys have cooties, and I'm not six, thinking girls have cooties.
“Earth to Steve.” Yelena's voice echoed, hand waving in front of my face.  I glared, “Damn, you’re touchy.”
“Nah, he's always that way.”  Sam laughed while sipping his drink. “Same as Buckaroo, bored pissy face, except Buck has always adored his sister.”
“Used to call him Ucky.”
“Just don’t touch her; we're golden, Buddy,” Bucky muttered quietly.
Okay, can we stop talking about her, for Christ's sake? I stared down at my glass, swirling the amber liquid left.  She isn’t here, and there’s no point in bringing her up. I set the glass down, downing the last bit before standing up.  “Be back,” I grumbled. “And like I would.”  After closing the door, I walked to the bathroom and the sink.  After turning on the sink, I splashed water on my face, which was the first thing I did. I rubbed my neck and gripped the counter.
She's his sister, his sister!  Why is this happening to me?
I rejoined the group, arguing about something incoherent until I sat down. I could finally understand. They were discussing the trip in a few days. And they had ordered some appetizers: Boneless wings, waffle fries, and buffalo chicken sliders. It was a lot. We dug into the food enthusiastically, barely taking the time to savor the flavors. Soon enough, we had polished off the entire platter and were looking around for more.
“It's just what I was told! Natasha and I are in a room, and Wanda and Siobhan and uh, Steve and my sister,” Bucky exclaimed with a mouthful of food. “Unless I heard wrong.”
“Oh, you definitely heard wrong,” I said. “I am not rooming with your sister.”
“But why isn’t Sam going?” Yelena asked with furrowed brows behind her glass, meeting her lips.
“Work, and I don't ski,” Sam said, working on his second whiskey.
I chuckled. “Yeah, only hockey.” We all burst into laughter, and Sam glared.
“C’mon, let's get inside.” I groaned, hauling Bucky into Sage’s house with Sam. He weighed a ton. He mumbled incoherently as we set him on the couch; he flopped face-first into the cushions, and I flipped him onto his side. Sam sighed, rubbing his face with his hand.
“I’ll get him some water, aspirin, and a trash can..” I nodded and slid onto the floor next to his head. Sam brought the trash can to me and a water bottle with the aspirin, and I set them on the coffee table. “Try not to wake up, mini Barnes.”
“Too late.” A groggy voice grumbled from the stairs. I groaned inwardly. Sage rounded the stairs and glared at us, pissed off that she had been woken up. Her hair was tied into a bun, and she wore a torn, beat-up Hex Girls raglan t-shirt and shorts.  “Why is my brother passed out on my couch?” I looked up, ran my hand through my hair, and leaned back.
“Well, he nearly drank the entire bar.” Sam chuckled. “Your brother is a lightweight.” She rolled her eyes at him and sat on the floor cross-legged near his feet when she reached us. Her head rested on the cushion by his foot, eyes fluttering shut.
“Why did you have to bring him here? Scared the shit out of me. I thought Sebastian had gotten in.” She mumbled sleepily with a hit of irritation.
My head fell, and I yawned.  “He can't get to you. Sam made sure.” She stood up and rubbed her eyes. Walking away, she waved us off and mumbled something like, " Don't let him puke everywhere, " and she disappeared upstairs.
“You pictured  her naked when she came down the stairs.” Sam laughed as Bucky snored next to my head. I threw a pillow at Sam's form in the dark as he sat in Sage’s odd chaise chair from a thrift store. It was a velvet finish and, ironically, a sage green. It hit him with a soft thud, and he groaned. “I was kidding.”

Catch up here: Chapter 1 Chapter 2 ❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“You think I can just say fuck it and drop out?” The words tumbled out of your mouth quickly as you walked with Nat toward the arena. Practice was in the afternoon today because there was a game tonight. According to Nat our rival team would be here later to do some warm up before the game tonight.
“Seriously?” She raised a manicured brow at you.
“Maybe Pietro was right. I should be a drama major,” you whispered, mostly to yourself. You knew you were being over dramatic about the ordeal, but Barnes was an egotistical jerk and he was going to make this project hell. Was that a pessimistic take on it? Maybe. Were you wrong? Probably not.
You pulled your school hoodie tighter, winter's grasp was holding on tight this year. The wind nipped at your nose and cheeks as you both made your way into the arena. Once inside the main doors heat blasted at you, you rubbed your arms with your hands and looked at Nat who was doing the same.
“You are dramatic. But it’s gonna be fine,” her confidence almost made you believe her. Originally you were just going to wait and ask him outside the arena, in hopes maybe his cocky, surefire attitude would be on the back burner. But Nat said practice was amping up now as the season drew closer to playoffs and the team would be traveling a lot more. Nat led us to our seats next to the bench, another woman was sitting there already.
“Peggy!” Nat said cheerfully, as she sat down next to her.
“Natasha!” she said cheerfully back. “Who’s this?” She smiled at you. You waved and introduced yourself.
“Oh you’re the one doing the art project? Steve mentioned it,” she asked.
You nodded, “news travels fast?” you laugh a little weirded out how she already knew.
“Hockey players gossip worse than fishermen wives in the locker room...”
“And out of it,” Nat added with a laugh, Peggy chuckled as well.
“And Barnes can’t shut up about the fact you drew him,” Peggy said with an eyeroll. Right, you thought. Peggy probably spent a decent time around him, since Steve and him were best friends, from your understanding it was rare to see one without the other.
“I’m not surprised,” you chuckled, looking down at your sketchpad. The night before you stayed up and watched videos of Barnes’ best plays and a couple of his interviews. There were some very detailed pictures of his face there. You quickly turned to a black page so Nat wouldn’t see it and poke fun. When you found a muse, it was hard for you to focus on anything but it. You could feel the hole you were digging getting bigger and bigger.
“Fuck,” you glared at Barnes as he slammed into the glass in front of you, startling you. He had his helmet lifted and he was giving you a bright and flirty smile. You raised an eyebrow at him and shook your head, uninterested in his antics. He slipped his helmet down and pushed back, skating backwards, he moved so fluidly, you couldn’t help but pay attention.
“Oi! Barnes. Pay attention,” someone snapped, you looked towards the voice and stared for a moment.
“Coach Fury,” Nat said to you, “the only person that can get Barnes to pay attention besides Steve,” she finished. You nodded before looking back at the players. Your eyes were drawn to a smaller player, he wore a 12 on his back, Stark. He had been in one of your business classes you took in your second semester. He was an interesting guy, cocky and arrogant, he also came from money. His father was the owner of Stark Industries. He was speeding up and down the ice with ease.
“12, he's fast,” you murmured to Nat, who nodded.
“He broke a record last year, his size makes it easier for him to zoom around,” Nat answered as she looked down at my paper, “Barnes really has your eye doesn’t he, this is like the Hela thing all over again,” she chuckled.
“Yeah,” you blushed deeply and looked back down at your paper. You really wished one of the other teammates caught your attention, if Clint did this would be much simpler. But of of course the school hot shot had to be one to catch your eye.
“Hey,” Nat lifted your chin and made you look at her. “It’s fine, muses come and go. That’s how art is,” she smiled, that was one thing you loved about Nat, she never questioned or made fun of your muses or how ridiculous an idea you had was when it came to your art. She would poke fun, and make silly jokes, but nothing harmful. Just good natured fun. Her support was unwavering and true.
Nat was a dancer, she was studying dance and dance theory. That’s how you two met, you accidently stumbled into one of the dance studios after hours instead of the art room. She was there practicing, and made small talk with you. You ended up just sitting on the dance room floor and working on your project talking with her as she practiced.
“You know what’s funny, I didn’t think about dance for this project,” you chuckled after you relaxed a little. Nat’s face broke into a wide smile.
“It would be the same as Pietro and the track team, but at least we look cute in our dance attire,” she mused lightly. You laughed loudly at her comment.
“You really hate those track uniforms,” you shook your head as you chuckled some more. Clint zipped passed a moment later and Nat‘s eye followed him like a magnet. “Goodness, you’re so in love, it’s sickening,” you mused, she pushed your shoulder playfully.
“How long have you two known one another?” Peggy asked.
“Since first semester,” you answered her with a smile.
“You guys are such good friends, I would have expected childhood bestfriends,” Peggy said, as she smiled at Steve who skated by.
“We just clicked,” you shrugged, returning to your sketchpad.
Tumblr media
Practice drew to a close a little while later and you followed behind Nat and Peggy as they made their way back toward the locker room. There were a few girls, including Pepper Potts, Starks on again/off again girlfriend. Every other week Nat would be talking about it. The girl Bucky had on his arm last time was missing from the group of girls waiting for the players to leave the locker room. First out was Clint, and he made a beeline for Nat, instantly pulling her into a hug and pressing his nose into her neck, she squealed a little as his cold nose made contact with her skin.
Peggy excused herself to go wait by the door for Steve who emerged with Barnes a moment later. She whispered something in Steve’s ear and pointed over at you with a smile. Steve nodded and waved with a small smile of his own. Barnes followed his gaze and instantly he perked up when he noticed you. He swaggered toward you, past the gaggle of girls waiting to try and get his attention, you noticed a couple of them glare in your direction. You stood with your arms crossed over your chest, sketch book tucked against your side. You looked up at him as he came up to you making a complete stop a foot in front of you. He really didn’t care about personal space, you took one step back so you didn't have to crane your neck as much to look him in the face.
“And what do I owe the pleasure today Doodle,” you cocked an eyebrow at the nickname, and squinted slightly. The nickname didn’t make you scrunch your nose or want to gag so it wasn’t the worst. You sighed heavily and danced on the balls of your feet for a moment. He just stared, watching you intently, a dumb cocky smirk plastered on his face.
“Would you let me draw you for my art project?” You asked, you wished the weight bearing down on your shoulders lifted but it didn’t. You dreaded the thought of spending more time with this menace of a man. His lip twitched further upward and showed some of his perfect white teeth.
“Ah Doodle, I thought you'd never ask,” he ruffled your hair with one of his big hands. You groaned and moved your head from him and tried to fix your hair.
“Don’t touch me, please,” you said sternly. “I just need permission to draw you and use your likeness.”
“Ah don’t be like that,” he moved forward and you stepped backwards and to the right, dodging him. He huffed in annoyance and you stared at him with your arms crossed again and slight scowl. “Will you be at the game tonight?” He asked, finally standing upright, his own arms crossed across his broad chest.
“Seats are sold out besides the reserved seats for team partners,” you stated, “so no not tonight.”
“There's always a seat reserved for my girl, you can have that one,” he stated matter of factly.
“I’m not your girl,” you said back firmly. “This whole thing is for my art project,” you moved your hand jestering to both of you, “it ends once my project is done.”
You couldn’t quite place the look on his face after you said that, but you could pick up the small look of challenge in his eyes. It seemed he was making this game, like he was contemplating how long it would be before you would cave and give him what he wanted. Another notch in his bed post. From what you could tell based on his body language alone he was not used to being rejected. Women usually flaunted over him and fell in his lap, all he had to do was choose who he wanted at that moment. Your determination to not be one of those girls was considered a challenge to him, met head on with stubborn determination to break you down and get what he wanted in the end. That made your stomach twist at the thought, he only wanted to do this to sleep with you, have some fun and then dump you off on Loki’s lap heart broken.
You shook your head, lost in your own thoughts. Barnes was still looking at you, a contemplative look on his face. He had his chin in his hand as he rubbed it, “this will be fun, see you tonight Doodle.” You glared at him as he walked away, twirling his keys around his finger.
“Jerk,” you said softly to yourself before you made your way over to Nat and Clint.
“Well that went better than I expected,” Nat said quietly as the three of you left the rink until you had to be back later.
A sleek black car was parked at the curb, you waved goodbye to Nat and Clint as you ran over to the car and slid into the passenger seat, you rolled the window down and shouted “goodbye! See you later,” Nat waved and they continued walking.
“Hey Loki!” You said cheerfully.
“Hello darling, I take it asking Barnes went well?” He asked as he put the car in drive and pulled out from the curb.
“It went alright. The cocky bastard,” you clipped your belt in place and turned your head to look at Loki fully. “He’s already flirting with me,” you shook your head in annoyance.
“At least he has good taste darling,” Loki said sweetly as we sped down the freeway into town to have an early dinner.
Tumblr media
“Have fun darling,” Loki shouted out the open window of the car as he dropped you off at the arena. You turned back and gave him an unamused smile and flipped him off.
“Yeah, fuck you,” you said with a slight laugh and turned away, waving, “love you dork,” you said over your shoulder. Nat was waiting just inside the arena for you and led you to your seats.
“So one of the perks of dating hockey players? Free seats?” You mused sitting down next to her, the arena was still pretty empty as the game didn’t start for 45 minutes.
“One of them,” she chuckled. Warm ups started and Clint stopped for a moment in front of us and lifted his helmet.
“Hey girls,” he said with a smile before darting off to warm up.
“Looks like Barnes just noticed us,” Nat said as he skated over.
“He had me clocked from the parking lot,” you grumbled. Nat laughed loudly and placed her hand on your shoulder wiping a tear from her eye.
“You’re not wrong,” she said between giggles. Barnes skated forward and came to stop sending glittering flecks of shaved ice toward the glass.
“Nat, Doodle, how's my new favourite girl?” He asked with a cocky smile. You rolled your eyes, and placed your cheek on your hand as you looked at him with a deadpan expression, Nat smirked next to you. You watched as Barnes ran his tongue over his teeth, he then winked and skated off to join warm ups.
“Do the woman he dates actually like that attitude?” You mused absently as you doodled on the open page of your sketchbook. Nat shrugged.
“Honestly, they’re probably more interested in his looks, and don’t care about anything else. That or the potential paycheck he’ll be earning if they can tie him down long enough,” She said softly. Your gut twisted uncomfortably at that, and you grimaced. Sure the guy was an arrogant prick, but he deserved better than that. Nat noticed your facial expression and nodded. “It’s not really fair, there's moments when he’s more than the arrogant show off, he’s pretty sweet. I think he’s just gotten used to hiding it; he doesn't bother being anything else.”
“Be what they expect of you and no one will question it,” you hummed. You mindless doodles turned into a simple sketch of his face. You admired the sharpness of his jaw, his mouth set in a soft line that was slightly upturned.
The game started, and you were too focused on watching Barnes skate to really watch the game. Not that you really understood the sport enough to really understand what was happening in front of you. First intermission passed and they were half through the second period when a black punk landed on your sketch pad. It startled you and your head shot up and you meant Barnes eyes. Nat was giggling next to you as you picked the offending puck up and handed it to the kid sitting behind you, who happened to be wearing a Barnes jersey. The kids day was made and Barnes’ narrowed his eyes at you. You smirked back in return and went back to drawing.
The crowd erupted in loud chants as Barnes scored with less than a second left in the third period, winning the game for your college. You watched as Barnes skated around celebrating his goal only for the captain of the other team to get up in his face. You tensed up as you watched the guy push Barnes shoulders and then grab his protective gear getting in his face.
So the rest of the team came to investigate and there was an all out brawl on the ice right in front of you. You stood up and looked down. Barnes was on top of the captain, his fist raised and he was breathing heavily.
“Bucky,” his name left your lips before you could stop it and he had to have heard you because his face tilted in your direction for a fraction of a second and the captain took that as an opportunity to flip Barnes over and bring a hard fist down on the bridge of his nose. You shrieked as blood gushed out of Barnes’ nose. Nat was standing next to you as you both watched in horror.
You turned your head and saw your college coach hopping the bench and helping refs break it up. Steve hauled the other team's captain off his best friend and shoved him into the arms of other teammates who pulled him further away. Steve helped Barnes up and took his face in his hands, Barnes just gave him a dopey smile. His gaze turned to you for a moment and he smiled a bigger smile.  You looked at him with wide eyes and your mouth agape, horrified.
The captain of the other team didn’t look like he fared much better. He was bloody and his eye was swelling shut with each passing second. Coach Fury looked pissed, and was stalking over to the other teams coach for a few words, a ref following close behind.

Bucky wrapped tape around his hockey stick carefully as his mind was racing. Championships. It was the first round today and his first game back on the ice since his injury. He was now fully healed and ready to bring his A game. He was knocked out of his thoughts when Peter spoke.
“Bucky, your girlfriend came to see you.”
A smile formed on Bucky’s face. Yeah, girlfriend. You guys had made it official a week ago and Bucky couldn’t be happier. “Send her in.”
A minute later you were walking in, and Bucky walked up to you and gave you a bone crushing hug. He loosened his grip and began to pepper kisses along your face as you giggled.
“Bucky!” You laughed. “Bucky, stop for just one second.”
He sighed and paused his kisses and thumbed the jersey you were wearing. “Sorry, doll, you just look so good wearing my jersey.”
“Well, I gotta let everyone know who’s got my heart.” You said as you looked at you softly.
“And you have mine.” He whispered before pressing a kiss to your forehead. “Now, did you need to tell me something, babydoll?”
“Just wanted to wish my handsome hockey player good luck.” You said tucking some hair behind his ear.
“I don’t need it, I got you.” He hummed before giving you a proper kiss on the lips.
“PDA BUCKY! P! D! A!” Sam said before gagging.
Bucky rolled his eyes. “You’re just jealous, Sam.”
“I should probably get to my seat.” You said as you gave Bucky one last hug.
“Alright, doll.” He said as he released you. “I’ll light the lamp for you a couple times.”
“Okay, Bucky.” You said patting his shoulder pad before calling out to the rest of the team. “Good luck, guys!”
“Thanks Y/n!” They responded in unison.
You exited the locker room and met up with Zemo before going to your seats. You had finally convinced him to go to a hockey game, which worked perfectly with your plan because Natasha was bringing Wanda and you knew Zemo had been crushing on her for a while.
“Just so you know, I take full credit for you and Barnes getting together.” Zemo said as he shivered.
           “Mmm, I don’t know…”
“You said it yourself that was jealous of me.”
“That’s what he told me, at first anyway. I still think we would have gotten together either way.” You retorted.
“Let me have this!” Zemo exclaimed before shivering again. “And why is it so cold in here?!”
You laughed. “I told you to bring a blanket.”
“This is why I don’t go to hockey games.” He mumbled before Wanda sat beside him.
“Hey Zemo.” She said with a smile.
His cheeks tinted pink slightly and he gave her a small wave. “Hi Wanda.”
You and Natasha shared a knowing look as Zemo and Wanda talked. The crowd soon started to scream, signaling that the hockey players were coming out. And once Bucky spotted you, he waved at you with a wink before starting his warmup. He was so adorable.

John Walker, one of the opposing team’s best players, went to smash Bucky against the boards, but Bucky was quick and moved out of the way just in time before passing the puck to Sam. Sam and Steve passed it back to each other a few times before Sam made the shot, lighting the lamp and causing the crowd to cheer.
Bucky was able to take the puck from Lemar Hoskins, before slapping the puck directly into the goal. The crowd went crazy and Bucky pointed his stick at you before blowing you a kiss. Your face burned and Zemo nudged you.
“I think that point was meant for you.” Zemo chuckled.
“Thanks Zemo.” You said before playfully rolling your eyes.
“A beautiful snipe by Barnes!” The announcer called. “Glad to see the Winter Soldier back on the ice!”
Bucky continued the game in an excited manner. He facewashed John Walker, assisted in quite a few plays and scored the last goal before the timer beeped. The crowd was going wild and you rushed down to go see Bucky. It was a bit difficult because his fans were very enthusiastic, but you managed to weave in-between them and get to Bucky.
“Babydoll!” He exclaimed before leaning down to kiss you. “Did you see those points I made for you?”
You laughed. “Yes, that and the whole stadium.”
He smiled and kissed you again. “Gotta let everyone know who I’m playing for. Besides, I saw Walker checking you out, I had to show him you’re mine.”
You patted his chest. “I’m pretty sure he looked at me like once for two seconds.”
He pulled you closer to him and huffed. “Yeah, well, two seconds too long.”
“What do you say we get out of here and celebrate?”
Bucky’s eyes lit up and he pressed a kiss to your forehead. “As long as I’m with you, babydoll.”
