A/N: Now, this was supposed to be a short fic, but it got away from me. Who knows, there might be more to this story. Dorogoy means sweetheart

Y/N was a well-known spy with the nickname; deadman. They called her that because you were a dead man walking when you saw her coming after you. She is no longer a spy because she was falsely accused of a crime she did not commit. No one heard her out, so she committed to a life of being an assassin/ mercenary.

While living her new life as a mercenary, she has had a lot of run-ins with the Avengers. She is on their most-wanted list but has yet to be caught.

The men on the team hate her because she is cocky, annoying, and arrogant. The women on the team have a different viewpoint of Y/N. The women all love Y/N because she is all of their soulmates.

Y/N is a soulmate to Natasha, Wanda, Yelena, Kate, and Carol, but they do not know about each other. They know that Y/N is a lesbian but not that she is poly with people on the team. Whenever Y/N runs into her girlfriends, no matter how much the job pays or how big the mission is, she always puts her girlfriends first.

Now Y/N is in a warehouse that is in the middle of nowhere. It was an easy job for Deadman because all she had to do was blow up an abandoned warehouse and get a bank for it. There was no heavy lifting or killing; she just had to make a bomb big enough to blow up the warehouse.

Y/N just finished hooking up the bomb and is now leaving the building. While walking out, she heard a noise that got her attention. She goes and investigates the sound and sees Yelena.

“Hey, dorogoy, what are you doing here?” Yelena looks at Y/N, confused.

“You just asked me the same question, but we are here on a mission. There are captives in the basement, and we are getting them out safely.

“Deadman is here and says that we need to go now!” Yelena says. When they hear that Deadman said it, then it must be serious. They ensure they get all the captives out of the warehouse into the jet.

Now Wanda, Kate, Yelena, Natasha, and Carol are waiting outside the building for their girlfriend to come out. Then the building blows up, kicking them back a bit and landing on their butts.

They get up and look at the rubble to see if Y/N made it out. After a few minutes and no sign of her, Carol and Wanda use their powers to go in and look for Y/N.

After a bit of time, they were able to find Y/N in the rubble, but she was unconscious and badly hurt. She has cuts and bruises all over her body, and her head is bleeding. They take her into the jet and go back to the compound. The ride back was silent because everyone was worried about Y/N. They give the captives to SHELID so they can go somewhere safe.

Once that was all settled, they rushed Y/N into the med bay with Bruce and Dr. Cho.

“What happened?!” Dr. Cho says, looking at Y/N, who is batter and bruised.

“There was an explosion on the mission, and she got caught in it,” Natasha says quietly.

“You mean the warehouse that should have been empty? Why was she there, and why was there an explosion?” Bruce questions the ladies because he knows Y/N was not there for anything good.

“Well, I am pretty sure she planted the explosion, but when she saw that we were there, she warned us and tried to stop it,” Yelena defends.

“It doesn’t matter what the story is; we need to help her, Bruce,” Dr. Cho says, taking a closer look at Y/N. Bruce sighs and helps.

“We will do everything that we can,” Bruce says.

“Please, she is my soulmate,” all of the ladies say at the same time. They all look at each other like they are crazy.

“What do you mean she is your guys’ soulmate? She is mine; we felt the bond and everything,” Wanda says.

“We felt the bond, too,” Carol says, and the rest of the ladies nod in agreement.

Bruce and Dr. Cho are stunned but don’t say a word and continue to help Y/N. The ladies gave Bruce and Dr. Cho space and left the med bay. They all walk to the living room to talk about the news that they just heard.

“So, are all of you telling me that you all felt the soulmate bond with Y/N,” Natasha says, and they all nod.

“How is that possible? When I first met Y/N, she was on a mission to kill someone, and I was going to stop her. We met eyes, and I immediately knew that Y/N and I were supposed to spend the rest of our lives together. She’s like home for me,” Kate says, upset that Y/N might not be her soulmate.

“I understand that. The same thing happened to me. She takes me out on the best dates and tells me she loves me. I guess she doesn’t, though,” Carol says with her head down.

“We go on lots of dates, and she says I love you to me too,” Natasha says, defeated. At that point, all the ladies realize that Y/N has claimed she is their soulmate. Also doing the same thing with each one of them.

“Look, let’s just confront her when she wakes up so we can get to the bottom of this,” Yelena says, standing up and then going to the gym to let off some steam.

Hours later, Bruce and Dr. Cho find all the ladies and tell them that Y/N is okay and now resting in the med bay. They all go together to see Y/N wake up.

They enter the room where Y/N is staying and crowd around her bed. At first, Y/N was asleep and slowly woke up to all of her soul mates at her bedside.

“Yee! You all are here,” Y/N looks around the room and sees that they all look mad, “I am sensing that you guys are mad,” Y/N says, sitting up in the bed.

“You have some explaining to do,” Wanda says calmly, trying her best not to raise her voice.

“Okay, what do I have to explain?” Y/N says, oblivious to the situation right in front of her.

“How come you have five soulmates? You know that is impossible to have right; you can only have one soulmate,” Kate says.

“Also, how can you make us all feel the soulmate bond!? Are you a mutant, and this is your power?! To mess with all of our feelings!” Yelena says, raising her voice, but Natasha calms her down by rubbing her back. Y/N looks around at all of them.

“What do you mean? You all are my soulmates. I can’t fake a soulmate bond; that will be impossible to do, and you all know that” Y/N sighs, “let me come clean. You are all my soulmates, and I love you all very much. I just have five soulmates. I thought I would only have one when I was younger, but all that changed when I met Nat for the first time” Y/N looks at Natasha and smiles. “Then I met Wanda for the first time, and it was the same magic all over again as I did with Nat” Y/N takes Wanda’s hand and kisses her knuckles because she knows that Wanda like it when she does that.

If and when Wanda takes you back to Earth the Avengers know and they do intercept. They're going to check on the both of you but make no mistake, they are not going to help you escape. Wanda is one thing and if it was just her they would maybe think about it, but Hela changes everything. Their combined force would defeat her, definitely, but the devastation is not worth it. They will aid them without getting too involved.

At first it's basically a love triangle but at a certain point it becomes a full throuple. No one could have predicted it unless they were legit psychic because in the beginning they were a hairline from killing each other all the time. Now that they're not competing anymore you and everyone else are a million times safer. You're not safe but safer.

Strangely enough, Wanda is not considered a concubine. She's a diplomat of Midgard. Not a single person falls for the title though. She acts like a tourist. No one says anything about it. The concubines will sometimes convince Wanda to let them tag along, not only to have fun but to gain her or Hela's favor. On that same coin, some of the concubine take the chance to give you a break, say it's the equivalent of a 'girls night'.

As far as any kind of punishment, you will not be punished if you want to live. Hela is very cool with offing people as we've established. If you do get 'punished' the ensuing war between these impossible women is kind of your fault. And honestly, you know better.

Say bye to privacy, personal space, and the possibility of having a job. You will be pampered, loved, and served, as long as you submit to being loved. Who needs freedom anyways?

Got prompted by @pinkkop but also partially this might end up as the controversial Thai BL post because the range of characters I'd defend with the passion is very wide for me:D

8 BL BOYS I WILL THROW HANDS FOR

Uea (Bed Friend)

This show isn't jokingly called 'A Tale of 1000 Traumas' for no reason, I mean – there is only so much one young adult can go through, and Uea has been through... well, almost everything. Tagging hurt/comfort fics on AO3 will result into red triggers all around. What fascinates me in this character is his resilience, too. He managed to go through everything with the sheer will power and knowing his own worth, what he deserves and what he does not. I am so glad the show made an active choice to send him to therapy and give him a considerate and loving boyfriend! He really needs both.

Sky (Love in the Air)

Again, no surprise that everyone would want to protect Sky. The acting was also chef's kiss in this show, I know I shouldn't be but I absolutely enjoyed seeing Sky getting triggered and sent to the red-lit room in his mind because this was pure cinematography, but irl I would just hug Sky with consent and never let him go. And kick Gun until he never rises up again too. I think Rain should've been given full freedom to avenge for his best friend. But this is also why I'm writing all these skyrain fics – because they are safe space for each other and I want to keep seeing it.

Rain (Love in the Air)

Ehem, like I said– the show has not declared it loudly but he's one of the most ADHD characters in Thai BLs if I ever saw one. He does not deserve to be mocked for his struggles and airheadness. I wish we saw more of him playing into his strengths beside taming a dom, instead of being infantilized by the show sometimes. Don't ask me to dive into full analysis though, I only could watch the PayuRain half of the show once so I'm going off vibes I remember, but I absolutely adore Rain and love reading fics that focus on his ADHD headcanon and how others understand and help him. And also those platonic BDSM tendencies he has with his best friend Sky.

Kawi (Be My Favorite)

For this guy, I would not fight the show or narration because they treated both characters and viewers with care, gentleness, wise teaching and love (Max is a harsh brat but that's his personality). I would actually fight the fandom: from people who hate-watched this show and refused to acknowledge it was amazingly done further than 'i might've liked it but ew screw this actor and novel the show was inspired by amiright don't judge me for liking it jk lol' to some individuals who missed the beautifully developed and portrayed close bond (aspec on at that, I'll stay firm) that spread across >10 years and different timelines and reduced Kawi to immature whiny weirdo who's scared to fuck Pisaeng ten times a day instead of one, idk. This show is a gem with many life-lessons and Kawi has one of the strongest and fascinating character development in Thai BLs that I've seen. Hands are being thrown.

Boston (Only Friends)

The creators of the show said the series didn't have any intentional message, but considering how many long discussions and poured out frustrations we had with some people, Only Friends definitely did Boston wrong. So what if he's a proud slut, should the show punish him for it while praising 'righteous' characters high on their horses? I don't think so. My guy was constantly filmed illegally and threatened by his hookups and friends, he's very hesitant about falling in love but he tried his best with clearly spoken offers, poly views and limits. I also see Boston kinda neurodivergent and/or demiromantic based on many lines he said about himself and his own view of people and relationships in the series. Nick might not be fully compatible with him, and I would throw hands for both of them, but if those two would communicate better, there would be no need for the OOC "twist" at the end. Their story could be beautiful, sad and realistic, instead Boston being kicked down in the street dirt by everyone after opening up about his heart and fears made me angry.

Akk (The Eclipse)

These descriptions just keep getting longer and longer? Oops... I don't think I need to explain the desire to protect Akk – this guy has not stopped crying since a mischievous and passionate newbie managed to break through his 100m thick wall of composure, pokerface and sheer will to survive. And also through all the manipulation Akk faced from the people he looked up to. Akk and everything that he went through managed to rip my heart out, and I'm not kidding. If you're repressed, oppressed and/or struggling with money, desire to make your parents proud and can't help but feel 'disapproved' feelings for someone – meet Akk, he's very relatable. I'd protect him and you too.

Thua (The Eclipse)

*clears throat* I did say this post would get controversial. I can and I will consider 90% of the people who hate Thua as lacking media literacy :D But without getting into useless fandom discussions, Thua is a poor teenager that needs love and support to be able to find himself and his own voice. He's stressed out by a harsh step-father, constantly facing homophobia and mocking in school, has suicidal intentions and the only good friend who opposed homophobic students and teachers, who showed him safe space and helped reach out to his mother, encouraged him to speak out loudly... went behind everyone's back, started dating the main "bully" of the school who threatened every queer for months and decided to support him while silencing students' and Thua's voices. At least that's what Thua experienced from his POV. Would you throw hands? Thua did, and while I may not agree with how he handled the situation, I can't hate him. He finally stood up for himself and his own, tried to change the system, and I'd fight Suppalo school for him too.

Black (Not Me)

There's someone who doesn't need my protection at all! A second before turning into bloody merciless activist-fighter who doesn't shy away from murdering capitalists and cops, I would still want Black not to think he's better off alone. While antagonistic sexually-tense exchange of comas with his ex-best friend can count as one of the most delicious type of romance that happened in subtext not text, he still deserved to seek solace in his ex-girlfriend and (ex? they were so close, why Gram does not care about him at all when he returns? we'll never know) other activist friend's company. Also, fighting with his life to change something in how the country works and hearing 'nah, your twin is better, he knows how to fight with social media so we achieved more with him than with you' from his mentor and Black deciding that he should again ditch everyone he cares about...noo:( I need spin-off about him where he gets everything he really deserves.

Y/n walked through the portrait with a sigh, she just wanted to go to relax with her boyfriends.

She walked up the stairs and opened the door to see all three of her boyfriends fucking a Ravenclaw, all four looked up at the girl and stood up quickly. She turned around and quickly walked out of the room with tears in her eyes.

"Y/n! Y/n Wait!" Remus yelled before he grabbed onto her arm making her turn around and face the three.

"Don't you dare say it was a mistake or a swear to god I will punch you in the face." Y/n said with tears streaming down her face.

"Why are you crying you whore." Sirius said making Remus and James look at him with wide eyes.

"What she's fucking three boys I bet that she's fucking everyone in gryffindo-" a slap rang through the air, Y/n had slapped Sirius right across the face.

"Well you three aren't any better." she said before she stomped away.

I was in the kitchen at the Avengers Tower making a pizza with Natasha, "The way you started beating the shit out of John Walker was hilarious." Natasha said while moving the pizza dough around.

"What? He said Bucky was a murderes monster." I said as I moved the pizza dough around on the pizza I was making.

We had to make like six different pizzas because of how many people lived at the tower, "Mrs. Barnes there is a woman named Minerva McGanagall here for you Ma'am." Friday said and I gasped.

"Who's she." Nat asked, "An old friend, I'll be back." I said before I rubbed my hands against the apron that I was wearing and then took it off.

I walked out of the kitchen and Bucky walked out the elevator, "Doll, where are going so quickly?" Bucky asked as he walked over and kissed my cheek.

"An old friend is here. I’ll be back I promise." I said before I kissed him and then walked to the elevator.

I got down to the first floor and saw Minnie standing in front of me, she gasped.

I stepped out the elevator, "Minnie." I said before I hugged her, "Oh honey, you've grown up so much Y/n." she said as she held my face in her hands.

"You're a hero, I'm so proud of you Y/n." She said. We both started talking and then I figured out why she was here.

"Minnie I don't know if I should go." I said and she sighed, "Y/n, you can bring a plus one." I smiled and she caught on, "Do you have someone special?" she asked with a light smile on her face.

"Yes. 4 years ago I got married, I'm now Y/n Barnes." I said with a proud smile, "Bring him. Because I would like to meet him and also I want you to bring him because James, Remus, and Sirius will be there and I want you to show them that you're happy." she said and I laughed.

I and Bucky walked into Hogwarts, "Wow you went to school here." he asked as both of us walked thought the halls, I looked at the doors that went into classrooms.

"Oh wow." I said with a smile as I looked around, "Y/n!" I heard a voice I hadn't heard in a while, I quickly turned around, "Lily!" I yelled as I ran over and hugged her.

I looked over and saw Serverus standing there with a light smile "Hi Serverus." I said and he actually hugged me, "It's good to see you Y/n." he said and I smiled.

"Oh Lily this is my husband Bucky." I said with a smile as I grabbed his arm lightly, Lily smiled brightly, "Hi I'm Lily." she said as she shook her hand.

"It's a pleasure to met you." he said and Lily's eyes went wide and pulled me close, "You did goooood." she said.

She started walking away while waving, "It was good to see her again." I said and Bucky nodded, "I'm glad you get to see your friends again Doll." I led Bucky into the Great Hall.

"Oh wow. I still can't believe you went to school here." Bucky said with wide eyes and I laughed, "I'm going to get you some punch." Bucky said before he bent down and kissed me, "I love you." I said and Bucky smiled, "I love you too."

I looked around and sighed, "Y/n?" I heard an all to familiar voice and quickly turned around and saw Remus, James, and Sirius.

"Guys." I said with a smile, I forgave them 7 years ago when I got together with Bucky, I gave all three of them a hug, "It's great to see you guys." I said with a smile.

Sirius' eyes racked over my body and I shifted uncomfortable.

I grabbed mine and Y/n's drinks before I walked over to where I left her and saw three man staring at her like she was a snack, I placed our drinks down and walked over the a cold glare on my face.

No one looks at my girl like that. I placed my arm around her waist and glared at the three.

Y/n looked up at me with a smile, "Guys this is my husband Bucky." Y/n said with a beautiful smile on her face.

'Bucky please go over to the side, Tony made us wear coms, so you can hear everything please let me deal with them' Y/n's voice rang through my head, 'Damn you beautiful mind reader' I thought and she smiled.

"I'll be back Doll." I said agreeing to argument.

"I'll be back Doll." Bucky said agreeing to my argument, "I love you." I said before I lent up and kissed him before he walked away.

"You're married?" Remus asked and I nodded, "How long?" James asked, and I smile lightly remembering my wedding day.

"Four years." I said and Sirius scoffed, "You married a guy named 'Bucky' really?" Sirius asked and I nodded "That's his real name?" James asked and I shook my head.

"It's his nickname, his full name is James Buchanan Barnes." I said with a smile, "His name is my name." James said and I shook my head.

"No. He's 101 years old and you're 26 I think you took his name." I said and all of there more eyes went wide, "Wait you married the Winter Soldier?" Sirius asked and I nodded, "Well he's no long the winter soldier, he's James 'Bucky' Barnes" (and you're part of my efforts to make amends/ I'm so sorry)

Bucky walked back over and kissed my head, "Hey let's home." I said and Bucky looked down, "Are you sure Doll? You really wanted to be here." he said and I nodded, "Yeah. Let's go. I hope to see you boys again..."

Checkmate (David "Hesh" Walker x GN! Reader)

TW: Traumatized Hesh, mentions of Canon Ghosts ending. Maybe if the mood strikes I'll make this a series. It's been sitting in my drafts forever.

"I only run when being chased" he replied smoothly, giving you a boyish smirk. Face slowly falling when your expression didn't change. Remaining serious.

"Then who's chasing you?" You asked in a soft tone, watching as the gears behind his eyes started to move. Trying desperately to brush this off with humor, but realizing:

Shit, you have a point.

"Right now, you and the staring" he chuckled dryly. Eyes looking everywhere but at you. The question made him uncomfortable, nervous, vulnerable.

"You play a lot of things off as jokes. Like nothing truly bothers you -- I don't think that's true though. You don't either" you reached forward, grabbing your drink to take a sip. "It's safe here. You can open up"

"If I open up anymore, I'll break my spine" you resisted rolling your eyes at the metaphor. "I'm an open book. Ask me anything" he challenged.

"What happened on the train?" May as well aim for the throat. "Why did you decide on the checkmate plan?" You watched as he clenched his jaw momentarily. Letting a long breath out through his nose, finally looking you in the eye before he spoke. Eyes begging for understanding.

Understanding that he tried. He's trying.

"You know exactly why. Everyone knows why. It's what had to be done. Ask Merrick, he'll agree" The walls were slowly being built back up, he was closing off again.

"What would have happened if you didn't?" This session felt like a chess match. Except he was the only one playing. Planning every move 5 steps before he needed to make it, planning how to retreat, to attack, to divert attention. Right now, he was using his silence as a defense. Waiting for you to continue before confirming his next move.

"David.." You sighed, leaning forward. "This isn't an interrogation, if it was they wouldn't have sent me. Your dad, brother, friends all want you to be okay. That's why I'm here. But I need more information before I can do much".

His eyes pleaded for you to understand he was trying.

Your eyes pleading for him to see you were doing the same.

"It's selfish. If I let him go, he would've kept hunting us. If I let him go, dad would never be avenged. Rorke would have never paid for what he did if I didn't make the call!" He slammed his hands on the table between you two. Expression immediately filling with remorse.

You watched as his face became an open window for the internal debate he was waging. Trying to differentiate what was reality and what wasn't. His mind and surroundings providing different feedback.

"I made the hard call to avenge my family. I know I fucked up and I have to live with that daily. My dad's dead, my brother is gone. I have nobody left." His voice broke as he leaned back, hands shaking as he fell deeper into that rabbit hole.

"Hesh, look at me" you requested, watching as his eyes cast down toward you. Posture still leaned back into his chair. Knowing he was now looking at his friend, not the psych personnel. "You're safe here. You're safe with me".

They're not gone. You saw them yesterday. You desperately wanted to affirm; but you knew that would be overstepping boundaries. Not that accepting your friends case wasn't overstepping. Your neck was on every line, every chopping block, under more risk for scrutiny because of this. Your heart ached day after day working on this; but how do you say no when

A) Resources and personnel are limited

B) Said friends father all but begged you to take this.

"There's a side of him that seems to be reserved for when you're around. He knows you, he trusts you. I'm not sure if I'd trust anyone else with this." Elias explained, sitting across the desk from you. The clinical piece of your mind wondered how much sleep he's gotten since that day. The personal piece knowing next to none, and it's rude to ask.

"You know there's policies, rules and ethics against this." Your heart broke saying the words "I can refer you to a colleague here who'd do fantastic on the case. I'm happy to overlook from an arms length away, but I really shouldn't be the one taking on his case"

"I understand that, but please. If anyone can get him out on the other side. It's going to be you."

How do you say no to that? You've known the Walkers for majority of your adult life. You've grown close to the trio. And if nothing else, Hesh did save your ass. You owe him at least this.

"Thank you" Hesh whispered, reaching his hand out to lay it atop of yours. Holding back a soft sigh, you decided enough was enough for today.

"Anytime. If it's not asking too much, can I give you some homework? Something to occupy your mind while you're cooped up in here" you vaugley gestured to the area around you. An office within a ward. You gave a small smile when he agreed, pulling an old, blank notebook from your bag.

"They won't let you have pens or anything in your room" you cursed yourself for the oversight, making a mental note to speak with the staff later. "When you can though, write out exactly what happened? Even point form. Help give me a full understanding of what happened, why it happened" you explained, handing the book over to him.

"How'd it go?" Logan jogged up behind you in the hall later that day, hope radiating off him in waves. It crushed him when he was advised against visiting his brother, especially right now.

"Confidentiality, Lo" you teased lightly "but we have a long way to go. We all knew that" you shrugged.

Hopefully this path leads to some resolution, clarity and forgiveness.

"Is the reason I can't go visit him confidential too?" Coming from anyone else - you may have found offense in the statement. A bite of sarcasm and resentment. Not with Logan - his intentions were clear:

He just wanted his brother back.

"Until we fully figure out what's going on in his head, and how to make positive progress we can't let you guys see him. He's still adamant that you're dead." You gave the youngest Walker a sympathetic look; knowing how close the two were before all this. He nodded, as much as he hated it he also understood.

"My arm is healing pretty well. All things considering" he smiled, pushing the sling off his body to show you. "Doc said I should be able to lose this thing in the next week or so"

You fell into easy conversation with Logan, both of you pretending like your hearts weren't chipping bit by bit. Listening to him give you updates on his broken arm, the movie he convinced Keegan to watch the other night. You told him about the latest recipe you tried for supper, and what you were planning for your coworkers birthday.

Anything to avoid what you both really wanted to talk about.

Book recommendations - Morally complicated/unhinged protagonists

I usually tend to gravitate towards characters who are good. Most of my own written characters will fall firmly on the good side of an alignment chart even if they are complicated, have trauma etc. But every once in a while I do enjoy some characters who are kind of unhinged or morally complicated. Here are some of my favorites.

I'm going to start with the book I just finished reading and am currently obsessed with: Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

In this book, earth has been destroyed, and Kyr has trained all her life to avenge earth. She was raised on an isolated space station with what she believes are the last humans, taught to hate the Majoda, the aliens who destroyed earth. Kyr has never questioned anything she's taught and worked hard to be a model soldier, but then her brother is assigned to a suicide mission while Kyr herself is relegated to the Nursery to bear children.

Kyr decides to take her fate into her own hands and rescue her brother from what she believes is pointless and leaves the space station together with her brother's brilliant but kind of unhinged friend Avi and a lonely Majo captive Yiso. But when Kyr enters the wider universe she must confront that not everything she's been taught is true and that the universe is a lot more complicated than she believes.

Essentially, this is a story of someone indoctrinated by a cult slowly breaking free. Kyr starts out not very likeable. She wants nothing more than to be the perfect soldier, is mean to everyone and is pretty clueless. But slowly she learns through the book and I loved watching her journey.

My favorite in this book has to be Avi though. He's unhinged. He's a genius, way too smart for his own good. He's gay and has a very complicated relationship with Kyr's twin brother Mags. I can't say too much without spoiling the book.

Mind the content warnings for this one, and keep in mind that Kyr is heavily indoctrinated by what is pretty much a fascist cult and as such she shows some queerphobic views (such as refusing to use they/them pronouns for a genderless Majo at first), though it also seems relatively watered down compared to how bad it probably was in the cult. It's also pretty obvious to a reader that Kyr is wrong about most things at this point.

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is up next

Iron Widow is a YA sci fi with characters inspired by people from Chinese history. The main character, Zetian, is inspired by the only female emperor in Chinese history Wu Zetian.

Huaxia is under attack by hunduns, a type of mechanic aliens, and to combat them they fight in chrysalises, machines taking the shape of creatures of Chinese mythology piloted by a boy/girl pair using spirit presence. Unfortunately, the girls often die due to the mental strain.

Zetian's sister was murdered by one of the pilots outside of battle, and she enlists as a concubine pilot to kill the man responsible. She gets her wish in an unexpected way, when said pilot takes her with him to battle, she kills him through the mental link.

Labeled an Iron Widow, Zetian is paired with the most powerful male pilot, a convicted murderer who is only kept alive because of his exceptional spirit presence. But Zetian has had her taste of revenge and is not going to go down quietly.

I love how unhinged Zetian is in this book, and the author is very good at making us root for her. They could probably have Zetian blow up an orphanage and still have us cheer for her. Zetian's anger is understandable, she's a girl fed up with the patriarchy and girls dying as pilots. This book also has a poly main couple, with all three being bi and into each other.

The book is the first in a duology and book 2 will be out April 2024 (it was delayed)

The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir is already pretty well known but it fit this category well and I only started it recently

There's three books out, but book 3 only comes out in paperback this September which is why I don't have it yet (nor have I read it)

The first two books focus on Gideon and Harrow, who are both from the ninth house. Harrow is a necromancer and heir to the ninth house, whereas Gideon is a warrior who would much rather leave the ninth house altogether. But when Gideon tries to escape, again, Harrow makes her an offer, become her cavalier when she answers the summons of the emperor, who called the heirs of all nine houses and their cavaliers to become lyctors.

The first two books are already very different in tone. Gideon in book 1 is funny, the language is very modern and Gideon is often not paying attention because she's describing all the attractive female characters in full detail, but otherwise she's relatively reliable as a narrator. Then comes Harrow the Ninth, which is one of the most confusing books I have ever read. It pays off in the end, everything will make sense (mostly).

What I found very funny in book 1 was just how childish and petty Gideon and Harrow could be towards each other. They hate each other but in a very childish way. Harrow calls Gideon "Griddle". Gideon considers that Harrow would never leave her alone in their rooms on purpose because then Gideon would mess up the buttons of Harrow's clothes.

Book 2 in comparison has a much more serious tone, which much written in 2nd perspective as well as some flashbacks to previous events that do not add up to what we saw in book 1. I have yet to read book 3 but I've heard it's amazing. After Nona there will be one more book which comes out 2024.

Last up is Black Sun and Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

This book is not so much unhinged, but very morally complicated. The world is based on pre Columbian americas and it shows a complicated conflict between different cultural group through the POV's of a couple different characters. The main character Xiala is a Teek who was banished from her own home. The Teek are very recluse and not super involved with the main conflict.

She is given the task of sailing Serapio to city of Tova, where much of the conflict takes place. Serapio's mother made him to be the reincarnation of their god, the Carrion Crow, and avenge their people.

We also follow Naranpa, who is the Sun Priest in Tova but grew up in a poor section with a group of culture who were excluded from the clans that make up the city.

And then there's Okoa, the brother of the leader of the Carrion Crow clan within the city, who only wants to protect his clan but doesn't really know what is the best way to do this, meaning he often changes his mind and alliances.

The first book builds towards the Black Sun, a rare solar eclipse that will change the world.

There are currently two books out and the third and last is scheduled for 2024.

Wanda watched you with steady eyes, handing over everyone’s equipment and making sure you didn’t forget your own.

You pulled Loki by his caller and kissing his cheek for good luck, wanda felt her heart flutter, you two were cute but she wished you could kiss her like that.

"Go on I’ll catch up soon" Loki kissed your temple and sent you off with the others, he walked up to wanda who was order to stay in the tower just in case someone thinks of attacking.

"You’re too obvious you know" he said leaning forward on the counter. Wanda lowered her head shyly.

Loki tilted his head "I wouldn’t mind if you asked them out you know" Wanda’s breath hitched, lifting her head with hopeful eyes.

Wanda smiled nodding her head, her raced when she imagined you actually liking her back.

Things were getting better by the minute on that day because when you came back all tired and out of energy you met eyes with her and smirked.

Loki whispered something to you and before she knew what was happening you approached her.

"Any plans tomorrow night?" You said, a sense of confidence that was so new came with it.

"Me? Oh, no I’m completely free!"

"Great, you and me the steakhouse at 8:30pm tomorrow." You left her speechless standing there stunned, her eyes Loki’s who winked back at her.

That was going to be both your night, but the key word was, as an hour before the actual date you were dragged into a code red emergency type of threat.

What else she didn’t expect was you coming back after days of no connection with nobody but furry, covered up in bruises and cuts.

"Oh my god" she refused to leave your side until all your wounds were treated even when you assured her that you were just fine and this was normal.

"I’m sorry for our…date" you said, your voice a little rough from screaming and running out of breath on multiple occasions.

"I don’t care, I’m just glad you’re safely back to me…" you placed a hand on her cheek and leaned close, she closed the distance with her soft lips touching yourself.

Sweet and meaningful, that’s how it felt.

"I promise to take us out whenever I’m allowed to leave bed" you smiled at the beautiful woman, the woman that cried when she saw you and took care of you regardless of everything.

"Whatever you say agent" she laughed, her laugh was heavenly.

Errant Kingdom Sucked (Not Worth Buying) 2 out of 5 Game

Okay I need to vent about Errant Kingdom because I LOVED the game when it first came out. But with all the delays and the fact they worked on another game and practically left this and neglected it shows in the game itself. I played a Knight (Maja romance) and I am composing myself as I write this because no words can explain the abysmal disappointment I have in this game. I also have some bones to pick with When the Night Comes so I might write that out later.

So I’ll separate them into chunks:

Story: It felt rushed and at the beginning you could tell they were building it up to something but there was no payoff

The assassination attempt on the rulers of the Kingdom had no bearing later down the game. It’s as if everyone forgot that it happened in the first place.

The cult mentioned or hinted at the start. It was a red herring they failed to capitalize in their writing.

After meeting the King and Queen you’re sent off to a frozen place to play Ambassador. This makes no sense if you don’t play Ambassador and having the Knight just seem so amazing and smooth feels out of character if you don’t headcanon your character this way.

There was no build-up to the other characters accepting you. If anything the story feels as if they had no choice but to accept you into their fold. It made no sense that they would ride or die for you (much less romance you) and the ending had no build up.

There was no hints throughout the game that Erik would be crowned King. The game had to outright point that he was going to be the chosen one. Again that would have worked if there were hints or the story was being angled that way. But no, the villain straight up had to say it.

The build up of working together to even defeat the bad guy had no fucking sense. What do you mean your friends were able to convince their respective factions (assassins and fae) to help you out? What emotional attachment do I have to people I’ve never met in my route and why would they risk their necks to help me?

Speaking of villains, you have no idea why Novoth is weakened or why the King and Queen have any motivation outside of being greedy people. I know you shouldn’t justify all your villains but at least give them a little depth!

The ending was a joke, it felt like a big “Avengers! Assemble!” moment that wasn’t earned at all.

Choices

Your choices throughout the story feel like they have no bearing whatsoever. During the first version of the game there were options on peaceful choices, or more violent options. There was a system supposedly for your character but it was scrapped and now we have a visual novel and less of a choose your own story (which I would have adjusted my expectations if the game marketed itself as such)

Your choices have no bearing whatsoever. You’re given a few options to kiss the character you romance or make a few witty remarks, but over all your choice as a character just feels useless at this point. Your agency is just an illusion and all you can do is let others take the lead. You’re less of an agent of a god and more of just some shiny new toy everyone bosses around.

Romance

I can not begin to stress the utter disappoint–the pain that this game has caused me.

Starting off, as a die-hard Maja romance when the game first came out I had so much hope they’d talk about her past relationship with Erik and exploring how a relationship between you and her and have a good heart to heart talk with the polyoption and the non-polyrelationship option.

What the game does is just FUCK YOU OVER. I feel disgusted genuinely because I didn’t choose a poly option. This was a route that I was going to take with another character I was going to create but the game outright states that Erik and Maja are still together at the end of the fight and even in the epilogue cards. Why the ever absolute sweet Andraste’s tits would you give the option to romance these 2 characters and give non-poly options with both when you’re going to say fuck it and basically still make them end up together. It feels awful and it feels disgusting as a player. The game basically went and said ah yeah fuck your romance and your choice.

This doesn’t even begin to stress how the relationships in this game lost development. You can feel from the first rendition of the game that there was going to be a build up. But now it just slaps on that you guys love each other and live happily ever after! There’s no reason, there’s no bonding, just a few kisses, flirting, and boom together. No talking no discussing just yeah hahah you and me baby <3

From a strong build up with an almost nonsensical continuation of a plot, to inconsistent writing of characters, romances that basically happen all of a sudden with almost no chemistry or conversation and creating characters and moments and expecting us to have an attachment when they literally never introduced us to them:

All in all, I give this game a solid 2 out of 5. (Points for the art work and the strong introduction the game had)

It had so much potential but the devs just squandered it. No apologies can be accepted especially because you can tell they just straight up abandoned this game. I know 2 people were working on this game during a past announcement and it’s not their fault. 2 people dedicated to a big game was sorely lacking and they decided to make “Call me under” and honestly whoever thought it was a good idea to work on both games and ruin Errant Kingdom I hope your food is cold.

But yeah that’s it.

This game is not worth it.
