i don’t know where these headcannons were headed so i just wrote what came to mind with a vague common outline; zhongli’s not here because idk what to write for him

disclaimer: the only sport i’ve ever played is badminton, i don’t understand football, how to swim, and i finished reading the haikyuu manga ☺️ 

Childe

Even if he hadn’t been swimming since childhood, Childe would have joined the team and made it to varsity being a natural at sports. After all, he did secure his spot for all freestyle races and became an important addition to the team medley all in his freshman year. Though, now his current concerns are about how he looks while swimming, like his strokes are all beautiful in a technical stance but does he look fine? You roll your eyes when he brings it up but he knows you look at him and only him during the races.

Has a large fanbase with people who have no clue as to how swimming works but were intrigued by how good they heard he was and how talkative he is with everyone. Friendly, cocky, and talented. What a skill set. He does have a fairly competitive attitude during matches and gets very fired up during games, and also hates losing with a passion. A team player is not what one would describe him as but he doesn’t discourage his teammates at all, in fact, he hypes them up a little too much to the point where they’re embarrassed when they hear his cheers from the team section behind them. It’s okay, they appreciate his enthusiasm.

He likes it when you watch him practice because it allows him to work better for his and you sake, he wants to impress you after all despite you already being way impressed. His body is like a streamline and he moves effortlessly through the water as if there was no friction there to slow him down. When he gets out of the water he shakes his head to dry off his hair a little bit before side eyeing you with a smirk. Humor him and wink back.

For his final competition he’s swimming an individual medley, having honed his skills for the other strokes to be as good as his freestyle and this’ll get him to this point. The other opponents are definitely no one to laugh at as they are top swimmers for their schools as well, but as mentioned, he’s competitive. And that nature drives his motivation very, very well. He’s positioned on the podium before the start of it and before the final adjustments to his goggles and cap, he’s looking into the crowd for where you are. Definitely points at you before smiling and getting ready again. The people follow his finger and it all lands on you but you’re just glaring at him because of the unneeded attention. But it’s fine because if ever he has nerves, you’re his reset. 

The race is intense and Childe is neck to neck with the swimmer in lane one and he was surpassed for a few moments during the breaststroke. Motivation and pressure really do feed his skill because he practically shone during the freestyle. You’re in the stands on your feet along with the crowd and once his hand touches the wall everyone cheers. He immediately gets his head out of the water, taking off his cap and goggles, and yells in victory after looking at his time.

As he celebrates in the water, you’re giddy for him and bouncing on your feet while cheering his name. Somehow his ears manage to separate out your voice and he looks up towards your usual seat. He smiles brightly before pointing at you once more. 

“I did it, baby!”

Diluc

Star quarterback and heartthrob of Teyvat High, grabbing the attention of all in the hallways especially after a big win. Diluc is their most valuable player and present in every single game. But he isn’t boisterous and his personality doesn’t seem very fitting to lead the team to their usual victories, but somehow he does it. They like how he’s not too stubborn about plays though when he decides to go off of the playbook, the whole team is concerned but they trust his instincts. He’s cool and quiet during classes and authoritative and stern on the field. Quite a contrast but a welcome one. 

His fanclub is usually sitting on the bleachers cheering for him and only him (much to the chagrin of his teammates and himself). They bring more posters with his name on it even though there is already plenty of cheering for him. He doesn’t care about them, however, he only cares if you’re there in the stands as well. he never outright asks you to watch him games knowing that you may have school work to finish or if football really isn’t you thing, but he secretly hopes that you manage to make it (you always do).

During the game you’re sitting there holding your breath every time he has the ball: both from the fact that he could get tackled at any moment and at the way he looks. His hands are gripping tight to the football and you notice the veins in his arms (your eyesight is great for this and for the fact that you tend to sit towards the front of the bleachers).

Touchdowns are his thing and they happen quite frequently. He never goes down that easily and from his build you would think that one guy his size could take him. Nope. Well, you’ve seen him train one handed with a large weight (substitute the claymore) while simultaneously keeping a conversation with you (and he never seems to be out of breath even after multiple rounds). Even in this game it takes a couple of guys to pull him to the ground and after they do, he gets up as if there wasn’t just an over 200 pound weight on him.

After a successful game and after greeting the opposing team again, he makes his way to the bleachers while taking off his helmet. He’s ignoring everyone and that might be rude though he could care less. He’s kind of sweaty but he looks really nice with his hair down after being in the bun for the whole game. His eyes scan the crowd and while others are congratulating until they land on you, looking around wearing his letterman jacket.

There’s no hesitation in going your way and you aren’t surprised when he wraps his arms around you but you are when he lifts you in the air by the waist, not caring about the others that can see you. You hug him back and feel him sigh against you, exhausted from the game but happy that you were there to support him. If you cheer loudly he’ll definitely be able to pinpoint your voice in the crowd. Though right now he’s close to you and he leans your head down to whisper into your ear.

“How was I?”

Kaeya

His words aren’t just for sweetalking his way out of trouble, no no, they’re also used to the Teyvat soccer team’s advantage for their games. Think of it as a bonus on top of his skillful qualities that make him a regular on the team. Sometimes he skips practices or shows up late and despite being reprimanded and threatened to be taken out of a game, he’s still going strong on that roster. 

Other than his priorities and sharp tongue, he’s that one player that keeps your attention when he’s on the field. The way he moves is quick and precise, the ball kicked between his feet safe from others that may try to take it away. But if they do try it’s a pretty grueling task. Get feinted or blocked by one of his legs and you might just fall onto the grass in a second. The smile he throws the opponents way after a stunt like that is meant to be apologizing but comes off, most times, as mocking. He doesn’t mind being underestimated, he just hopes that the opposing team doesn’t do it more than once.

You aren’t the only one to notice all of this, of course, his fans love to give him the attention he not-so-subtly asks for. When he practices they’re also there watching him and giving out compliments that boost his ego. You’re doing your best to ignore them but they have their constant shrills and cheers at full volume even if you sit as far away as possible. He does acknowledge them to thank them for their support but finds them particularly distracting. When he has a game, he kindly goes up to them and asks them to keep it down so he and the whole team can focus. All this before kissing you right in front of them, leaving you all dazed as he runs off.

He’s definitely a midfielder with his ungodly amount of stamina and quick thinking for passes on the field. He doesn’t prefer to make the shots, allowing his other teammates to shine and play as well, but he does prefer to be in control of where the ball goes; making sure everything is going to plan and just being the gear within the team that keeps them moving and together. Sometimes the opposing teams think his eyepath is a disadvantage but he’s had that for years. There isn’t more of a blindspot on his radar with or without it so when the opponent tries to steal the ball from under him, he’s pushing it slightly forward while jumping over their leg. 

This game is his last for the season and the opposing team’s full of players he’s kept his eye on for the year. His plays are easy enough to get around once you get to know how he moves so Kaeya’s got to be at his best tonight. It’s no problem with the promise of a little something if he wins the game. Ah, not if. More like, when. 

He stares them down with a smile on his face, borderline greeting for a “good game” and also a promise to take them down. And that grin doesn’t leave his face for he’s played his absolute best, receiveing and successfully keeping at the balls passed his way with a few shots past their goalie. He’s satisfied with his play and doesn’t even look winded after running across the field, especially not when they’re all on their way back to the locker rooms and he makes eye contact with you as he goes. His hair is splayed down his back and there’s a towel draped over one shoulder. And he winks.

“Wait for me, yeah?”

Kazuha

He’s the ace of Teyvat High’s volleyball team and just an all-rounder on the court, specifically known for his very high jumps into powerful spikes that leave the opposing team wondering where he gets all that air from. You would think this skill set of his comes accompanied with an enthusiastic persona and voiced out opinions, but that thought is far from who he is. The way he talks is almost poetic and you could laugh at how out of place his tone may be whenever he talks volleyball or has critics about himself or other team members. 

Sometimes his teammates would just try to get him straight to the point (by either asking bluntly what they could do better or just stare at him until he notices) before they clock out in the middle of his speech. Though his words are very useful and have helped them hone their best skills and support weak ones in a mindful way, rather than a physical way. He is also a very observant player and is able to pinpoint the weaknesses of the opposing teams with just a few rotations in the first set. Others ask how he does it and all he says is “I can sense the air around them.” They assume he means their “vibe”

He has a decent amount of fans that he honestly never knew he had. He thinks that they fond out about him when he jumped over the school fence when he was almost late to class and came to know that he was on the volleyball team. He did surprise many people, the team and coaches included, as to how high he could jump. It’s like he stays in the air for longer than he should, as if gravity was nonexistent. He doesn’t even need a run up to gain momentum for his spikes. 

Speaking of, you’re viewing such a match now. Their long-time rivals are definitely not going down without a fight and you’re clutching your friend’s sleeve as you both look at the court for your respective partners. You find Kazuha stretching near the bench while speaking with the coach, his face in your direction but you didn’t want to bother him by waving (if he could see you from there). After a few moments the conversation finishes and his gaze turns upward, coincidentally landing on you. He smiles softly and lifts his hand to kiss his knuckle, you doing the same by pressing your lips to your own. You then notice that his hands are taped and that the right hand is more wrapped than the left. It might just be from all his practicing.

He shines as he usually does and never fails to impress the newcomers in the crowd with his jumping. He’s constantly receiving the last hit from the setter and spiking with a purpose. He isn’t a spiker going for full power, instead opting for tricky shots and deep angles (power being a slight afterthought). With support from Xiao on the court and the rest of the team for the set-up, he dishes out point after point. Underestimating his strength and dexterity is a huge mistake, and the same goes for his serves. They like to swerve, it’s a nasty thing, and when the opponent thinks it’s coming to them it turns at the last minute and hits another.  

They are now at set point and your gaze is fixed on him as the last point rides on his serve. He’s looking straight ahead and breathes deeply. His serving ritual happens: his right hand on the top of the ball as he lightly blows air on top of it. He waits for a few moments with his eyes closed. The ball is tossed up with ease and he jumps to it, the sound echoing off of his hand and off of the floor when everyone sees that he’s made a service ace. There is a moment of silence before the cheering from Teyvat’s side fills the gym with you and your friend joining in. Kazuha lets out a sigh and releases the tension he’s had for the entire game, something so relaxing after the tense past hour. He wastes no time after the final greetings to hit the locker room and change to run over to your waiting spot. You jump when his arms come around your waist as he buries his head in your shoulder, the exhaustion finally catching up with him.

“We won, my maple leaf.”

Xiao

The Guardian (Yaksha) of the Teyvat volleyball team prefers to be called by his name rather than rumored titles. But as a matter of fact, his own teammates started that trend and his actions on court simply reinforced it. His defensive skills are one of the best in the nation, earning the position of libero, and he would rather quit volleyball than receive a ball in a half-assed way. When you think a ball is too far out of his reach, he’ll prove you wrong and dash over to pass it to another teammate. The passes are difficult for him to get up but are easy to pick up for his team after he hits it to them. Nothing’s impossible on the court with him there. 

The newbies on the team get nervous whenever he helps them during practice. His constant glaring and demonstrations intimidate them but he’s only trying to help (once he starts talking they loosen up and realize that he’s not that scary). He does take notice of their attitudes towards him and he tries to be more welcoming, but Kazuha says him smiling is stranger than if he wasn’t. The wing spiker ended up having to dive for balls nearer to him more often that practice.

Most admire him because of his consistent and reliable plays while others are drawn to the brooding, quiet guy who is surprisingly good at a certain sport. Just watch him play. You’ll get more suspense looking at shots that seem nearly impossible to get and you release the breath you never knew you were holding when it magically winds up in the air. There are cheers of his name in the stands but all throughout the match he never looks there. He’s way too focused on the game to have any other distractions in his mind. All he needs is to remember his plays during practice and execute them accordingly. He needs to be that solid foundation for his team, though, he trusts that they won’t always have him to rely on.

You can see the stern look on his face from your spot in the bleachers. Your friend is already getting nervous before the start of the game and they’re holding onto your sweater tighter and tighter by the second. You don’t mind because you’re anticipating as much as they are. Your gaze is set on Xiao, how he’s slightly bouncing in his spot knowing that he’ll be starting this first set, how he’s not talking like the other members on his team, and how he fiddles with the string bracelet on his wrist. As per court rules he’s not allowed to wear any jewelry of any sort so his piercings are all gone, but this accessory was fine to keep. He says it’s his good luck charm and it warms your heart to see him adjust it before getting back in the zone.

It’s an intense match, the whole crowd can feel it. There are great spikes, blocks, and serves from both teams but the only thing that stands out to you are Xiao’s receives. He’s there to obtain the ball knowing that the serve could swerve to their best hitter, he’s there at the net for their wing spiker just in case it ricochets off of the opponents block, and he’s there and ready to spring into action to dig up a ball at any given moment. His focus is captivating that even in their timeouts he’s got to be patted on the back to take a break. It’s nice to know that he’s enthusiastic about something juxtaposed to his usual demeanor. It’s essentially the same as he doesn’t talk much, but you can see the fire in his eyes when he successfully receives. 

And then one particular moment shines. They’re about to win the first set when a tricky shot has him making a mistake. Under his breath he curses and sees the ball moving over the net to the opponent’s spiker. He’s only got half a second to think about how to recover but of course, his well-trained reflexes kick in before he can see them. The ball is heading towards over his head and he turns around to position himself with his arms outstretched to receive behind him, his bracelet dangling in his peripherals. The ball passes to their setter and Kazuha strikes it down with ease. Teyvat High cheers in disbelief and even the opponents are stunned. His teammates are calling his name and he’s decided at that moment he would never mess up another receive to feel that stress. That’s why he practices a lot anyways. But he looks down at his wrist and sighs.

“We’re winning this.”
