I’ve seen you post about both the marauders and snape, so I’m assuming you’re a fan of both? Me too!

I sometimes get bummed out at the extent fellow marauders fans go to to exclude our prickly Slytherin. But at the same time I’d much rather those fans who really hate him to just ignore him than stir up hate so…Idk.

My question was: What are your thoughts on the Slytherin skittles? On one hand, it’s kinda laughable to me that these are the Slytherins we’re gonna incorporate into our fandom, while we steadfastly ignore the 5th or 6th most mentioned character in the series. But on the other hand, maybe it opens up the door to the gradual acceptance of Severus… ? if not for his canon character, at least for his fans to feel less unwelcome? Maybe I’m being optimistic, but I’d love to one day post about Snape without worrying that everyone is going to unfollow or block me

I'm Snape fan forever and yes, I am currently having a marauder's era obsession phase-honestly I used to look down upon the marauders fandom because of how much their headcanons disregarded the main canon and how much they change the characterizations to the point of incomprehensibility(remus, im looking at you). But I do feel- and have always felt- that the marauders era was ripe with potential, and Tumblr has reawakened that particular obsession.

I get you so much- it's really very upsetting to have people who share some of your interests and shit on your others. do hope that you have friends in the marauders fandom who don't accept snape slander(and if not- i'm always here!!!!). and i understand the wish to have them ignore him altogether- though it does feel a little isolating at times. though not lately for me- thanks to my lovely marauder fan moots :) :).

the slytherin skittles- hmmmm. Let me make a very humble confession. before this ask, i wasn't entirely sure on who they were. im educated now, and honestly i prefer to have the usual marauders era cast be different ages- it just seems very unlikely that this huge cast all went to school together. like i know wizarding britain is small, but excuse me. what the fuck.

that being said, i have come to be fond of the fandom versions of these characters- the rosier twins, barty my bloody beloved, dorcas, regulus black(is that all????) and i do like the idea of them being a group and shit. it's just, them being a group and shit in school just. doesn't match up with my version of the characters, ya know? still, there is wonderful fanfic and fanart out there for them, so. i aint complaining.

but I do feel like them being glorified to such a degree while Snape is right there kind of weird. I mean, absolutely, I don't expect Snape love from the marauders fandom and I don't need it, but sometimes it's kinda confusing how much Snape is passed over in all these fics. Just- I can imagine Snape being an amazing addition to all these fics and imagines, and it does sometimes feel like all the Slytherin characters are just palatable pieces of Snape, which is a bit off putting. still, i am fond of these characters to a degree, so this is less of a complaint and more of something that just confuses me.

maybe. maybe this could be the path to less Snape hate but HONESTLY I'm not holding my breath. Like I said before, I'm not looking for Snape love and content in this fandom, and though I do feel he would be an amazing addition to it, I'm not terribly sad that he isn't a part of it. I'd rather he be ignored than hated, and when he is hated, I'd rather ignore it than focus on it- for my mental health at the very least.

And on the topic of it making the opinion of Snapedom and Snape content less severe- i can see it happening and not happening. I think there will always be people who will dislike Snape and wonder why anybody will like him in the marauders fandom, and as long as they are outspoken, it's going to be a while since we see change. But I can definitely see it going there and am optimistic myself.

and finally, one last not-so-humble word of advice- if you have mutuals or followers who you think will block or unfollow you because of Snape(a FICTIONAL CHARACTER) maybe they are people you don't need. Your blog is your space, and as much as it needs to be a safe space for others, it needs to be a safe space for you too. Post about Snape all you want anon; post about any of your interests- and the people worth thinking about and respecting will stay regardless.

ok I have this oc I'm afraid of posting about bc I'm afraid of people telling me shes cringe bc shes an HP oc, but, like, she one of my MOST DEVELOPED CHARACTERS. I made a whole ass SCHOOL based around her character premise. She's a muggle that's aware of magic bc shes the cousin of a muggle-born, so since shes aware of magic she goes to this all-girls school full of muggle girls that have magic family so that they can learn about magic, wizarding culture, magic history, etc. Shes based in the marauders era, were her and lily are neighbours and best friends then everything goes to shit etc. etc. I could honestly talk about her for hours but I don't want to make this ask too long. (btw, she was originally made as a wife for remus bc I felt like it, but then it conflicted with my wolfstar shipping so I just said "fuck it, we ball" and made them a polycule, they have three kids :])

That’s rad! A school for non-magical people to learn about magic is such a cool concept!!

Marauders' Era Fics - One Fic Writer's Opinions on why they are so stupidly divisive

AKA opinions no one asked for but I'm putting out into the world anyway ;) ...also caveat these are my observations, some are clearly generalizations, I'm aware that I can't have read all the fics, etc, my opinions are likely biased by something or other but I'll try my best to make them unbiased in this post.

So - I started reading HP fanfic less than a year ago. In this time, one of the most divisive things I've found are Marauder era fics.

Why? Because it's really fucking hard, IMO, to write a good Marauder era long fic (the 70s) without falling into traps that divide folks. (One shots/short fics are exceptions)

Here are the main problems with the Marauder era:

It's boring. Until the late 70s when Voldemort's activity is rising and the betrayals happen, it's dull. It's boarding school kids being brats to each other and a werewolf running around Hogwarts.

Because it's boring, fic writers (myself included) have to come up with either a) plot points and/or b) solid characterization and character changes to get from 1971 to 1981 with a compelling story. What makes a compelling story?

I'm glad you asked. Ideally, from what I've read/seen, it's plot AND characterization. The plot develops, the characters change. One of the key drivers of my fics has been writing a story, not just a bunch of interrelated situations. So, what's the issue with Marauder fics? They rely, IMO, either on convoluted plots that don't change the characters OR they have to reinvent the characters in a way that makes them too OOC.

The issue I see with most Marauder fics is that it's EITHER a bunch of situations and the characters don't really change OR the characters change so that they're unrecognizable to their canon counterparts. The Marauders are tiny versions at age 11 of who they'll become when they die. Sure, they build friendships/relationships, but besides coming of age (which is totally fine as a story, and I think that explains why ATYD is so popular because of Remus's changes from beginning to end, or Debt of Time, because of Hermione/Mia's changes), but otherwise, that's what Marauder era fics must rely on, IMO, in order to be successful. It's the character changes that make the story compelling, not the plot or story itself.

Next point. The characterizations, in my opinion, are why the Marauder era fics are divisive. Lacking plot we need character building but it takes a tremendous amount of effort to work backwards from the broken men in canon to the children we only get glimpses of - let's talk examples now:

Severus Snape, at 11, is not an evil child who poo-poos on James Potter because Snape is inherently evil. Snape is a poor, likely abused child who sees a snobby, rich, pampered boy and reacts in jealousy. Snape isn't blameless. He's not perfect by any means and there are plenty of situations in which there are no excuses for his behaviors. Setting him up as an evil antagonist as a child (eg bashing) assassinates his character. Yeah, he's a dick in many ways but he grows up more in the 70s AND MATURES more than the other characters, who grow up LATER.

Sirius Black, at age 11, is already at odds with his family. He's a defiant little shit who makes friends and sticks up for ONLY who he thinks is worthy of his time. It's all too easy to pick on Snape (again, he's not blameless either, but why not take the high road, Sirius?). He grows up somewhat as a result of what happened to the Potters, but it's a stunted growth because of Azkaban. He does become the best godfather to Harry as he can be (Who eats rats for their godson? Respect, bro.) That being said, I'd rather read about Sirius as an adult because as a teen he's a prick. I love him a lot in later years but reading about him as a Marauder is nauseating sometimes because his behavior is glorified or justified because Snape is "evil."

Remus Lupin, at age 11, is somewhat dull. Yeah, he's a kid werewolf so he has among the most potential (besides Snape) to grow up and get good character development. The problem is he's set up immediately with the other boys who are so confident, and Remus so insecure, that he bends over backwards to defend them. He doesn't really grow up till later because he's NOT challenged to grow. Other than the werewolf business (and I fucking LOVE Remus Lupin, btw) he doesn't have much potential till he's older. This creates a problem for Marauder fics, because if he's dull, we've got to spice up his character in lieu of a good plot. This is my main beef with ATYD - Remus is a gay, dyslexic, orphan werewolf. YIKES. That's the starting point for Remus to get to his canon character and I'm just not buying it. He's cowardly and it takes someone like Tonks to change him because he's not truly challenged as a teenager.

So, what DOES make a good Marauder fic? Either telling the story from a more complex/challenged character and seeing them change (Snape, Peter) OR creating plot lines that make it AU. Lacking that, it's all about (mis)characterization and that's what makes these fics so divisive. Or, just doing one shots, short fics, or centering on 1979-1981.

I like the Marauders well enough and I think there's plenty of fertile ground for good one shots and short fics of their Hogwarts years. Sirius and Remus are WAY better characters as adults than as teens. I also like Snape well enough. He's not perfect and a lot of his behavior is appalling (most adults in the HP series are incompetent or cruel) but he was necessary for Voldemort to be defeated. I'll make a separate post one day on Snape, but this post was mostly about Marauder fics and why they're divisive.

(One day I'll make a post on why I hate wolfstar so much, too, but in short I legit can't see Sirius Black being into shabby, shy Remus when he has confident, cool James Potter right there, even less so when we consider the prank involving Snape and the mutual betrayals. yeah, it's great fodder for relationships (cool angst) but not seeing it as a sustainable ship at all)

Time travel AU: Weeping Angels and Harry Potter

No one will ever see it, probably, but it's 5 a.m. somewhere, and I'm fandom crazy 🤷🏼‍♀️

So, I really love time-travel AU in almost any form and flavor, but being as obsessed with Marauders as I’m, you can imagine my favorite setting for such AU🐺🐶🦌🐭

I also live by Doctor Who 👨‍⚕️❓ — it's something about charismatic British (wo)men, you know — so it should give context for how this idea came to me.

Anyway, the idea itself. Weeping Angels 🗽 in Harry Potter universe. I consider Weeping angels to be one of THE BEST creations in fictional universe, and I believe the potential for their use is infinite.

Imagine a Main Character (up to you which one: canon characters, OC all the way, or I also really like to interconnect Marauders era and The next generation aka the kids). Imagine Hogwarts defenses get triggered; no one is found, everyone thinks it's false alarm or some ghost/boggart/something harmless, and no one notices an extra statue in the halls. Imagine people start missing. Imagine your character just walking the halls and noticing over time that statues change, that there's more of them. Imagine your MC not being quick enough one day, so an Angel gets them. Imagine them appearing in the same hall in 1970s. Imagine drama and angst, and romance, and found family (maybe even literal one, depending on the character). Imagine opportunities for plots and ships.

I love the idea that MC would go to Potters or Blacks for help and protection, depending on who they are.

(And I get it, Blacks do not seem to be a logical choice, but I imagine MC going to Arcturus and Melania Black (aka Lord & Lady of Black), and being like: 'I'm f*cking Black, I'm stuck in the past, Angels are evil, so you will help me, or Morgana help me!'. Something similar with Potters, but much more cordial and wholesome)

MC becoming part of the family and sibling to one of the Marauders. Them coming to Hogwarts and integrating in. Living, breathing, learning, making friends and falling in love.

Also, MC not telling the truth to Marauders until much later or at all, and the only person that they would trust with the truth aside the family is McGonagall (let's be honest. this Queen✨ would be objectively the only one to handle such shit, with grace)

Imagine MC starting to become part of history, maybe trying to change it, but maybe ending up only causing it to happen. Imagine them starting to suspect that Angels were not so random in the first place. Imagine an Angel appearing in the 1970s...

As I said, potential is infinite. There may be more time jumps, there may be time loops, there may be evil plans and strategies, there may be even the Doctor themself (multiverse IS real, after all).

To conclude:

No one will ever see it, probably, but if YOU did, and have read it all trough, then it must be either 5 a.m. at yours or you're fandom crazy ❤️‍🔥. In any case, thank you for reading this and kudos for being fandom enthusiast, I love you just for that already. Share your ideas and opinions, and please let me know if I'm not the only one who thinks it would be ingenious 💡

Also, please share it with anyone who you'd think could make this idea come to life, and I'm always open to help (I do not have a patience to write a whole story by myself, but I work great in tandem. Or I can just drown you in ideas and headcanons for this AU universe I just dreamt up 🔮)

They got their name because of their need to cover their faces to avoid trapping each other in stone-state. They are known for being "kind" murderous psychopaths, eradicating their victims "mercifully" by dropping them into the past and letting them live out their full lives, just in a different time period. This, in turn, allows them to live off the remaining time energy of the victim's life.

Hi! Can I request swan boat 🦢 for the Marauders era? I'm just going to copy paste my trading cards description with a few additions (and is it okay if I'll send this same description in a seperate ask with the Golden Era? 😅)

I'm a straight small (153 cm ~ 5'2 ft) Hungarian woman with wavy, shoulder lenght dark blonde hair. I wear glasses because of astigmia. My favourite colors are black, yellow, blue and purple. Besides my native language I can speak German and English. And I always considered myself as a Hufflepuff, despite being a bit more like Luna. For most of these MBTI tests I got INFP (though I don't believe in this I think our personality grows, changes)

I'm not the most talkative person, I have problems with communicating with others since I was in elementary. I have a hard time to warm up to others, got anxious about it, but if I find my people I slowly open up, and even crack some jokes and can be really sarcastic. I always say sorry about everything, even if it wasn't my fault. I have a huge imagination and do a lot of day-dreaming. I don't like being dropped into a situation without being prepared, but if I can use some skills well, sometimes it looks like I can improvise. Like for example I got drama lessons in the local theater and I could pull off some characters better (mom, serious director etc.) than others.

I consider myself as someone who deeply cares about people. I want to help others but I don't know how and am afraid that someone only wants to use me. And no matter what philosophies I grab to navigate myself in this wild world, I always return to people. We are ugly and beautiful at the same time and it's so devastastating seeing people treating each other shit.

My hobbies: I love listening to music, it always got my back when I was alone. And reading some good character-driven book always moves my imagination. I like spending time with a friend of mine and talking about films, music, and dirty jokes (they're mostly about JoJo and JJK lol) and maybe I'm the one who would stop the chaos between the two of us. Like to search for different languages and cultures on Google and different playlists on youtube or 8tracks. Oh and watching playthroughs of videogames on Youtube.

I have a wide taste in music I guess? From Starset through Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco to mashups and videogame OSTs I listen to anything. But my favourite band is Starset. I'm always afraid to show other people my music taste because one time I've got booed that it's not danceble 😅 (the song I put in then was Anna Sun by Walk the Moon) I don't think I have a special aesthetic; my outfits are 99% simple T-shirt + Jeans combo. Indoor I wear one of my oversized band T-shirts I inherited from one of my cousins. So I would say my aesthetic is casual I guess? Though my favourite aesthetic is spacecore but I like dark, light, chaotic academia and a bit grungecore too.

my eyes went wide, the excitement building up in me of getting my very own hogwarts letter. my mother had called me down from my room to give it to me, i hopped from my bed walking fast past our house elf toby smiling to myself knowing that it was my letter. my mother and father were sitting in the living room, i stopped by the door frame and tried to calm myself i have known i would be getting the letter since i was 7 but now was finally the time. father had nagged about getting in the house slytherin and not any other house since our family has all been slytherins for generations. i took a deep breath and slowly walked into the area "mother you called for me?" i mumbled loud enough for her to hear, she side eyed me and hummed. she put the book that she was reading down and reached to the table beside her and picked the letter up between her index finger and middle finger without looking at me. i walked closer and took the letter, "it's your hogwarts letter to no surprise." she said coldly. "diagon alley on thursday how does that sound darling?" my father said and glanced over to my mother who was back to reading her book, she looked at him as he played with the ring on his finger and gave a soft smile "sounds good dear" she said then going back to her book.

my father looked over at me with a small smile "you can go if you'd like" he said and continued to watch my mother read from time to time while also going through letters that have came. i nodded and turned around leaving the room. they've become distant since my 10th birthday always just glancing at me and talking when we have to. i ran upstairs to my room smiling wide, opening the letter before i could even open my door. the letter said the basic things about what we need and the rules things like that.

i yawned as i watched the first years joyfully get on the train with big smiles remembering how excited i was when i first got here, i smiled to myself before being startled by a bubbly red head. "hi y/n" the red head said lowering her voice knowing that she had startled me. "hello lily, how are you?" i asked pleased to see her. she smiled big and moved around a bit "great! i'm so excited for sixth year, i'm taking transfiguration this year" she said her voice growing loud with excitement. i laughed a little, i really liked lily she was very nice and smart and has a lot to talk about she can literally make a conversation out of anything.

i really enjoyed having lily in my presence even when she has severus with her, but i honestly couldn't be around her when she had james potter up her ass; because when james came so did peter, remus and sirius. when it was only lily and some of her other friends i loved the moments even though i'm surprised she would even try to hang around me i'm sure sirius had told her about my family and how evil and disgusting they were because his family was just like mine.

"what about you y/n/n? how are you?" lily said playing with her hair nervously as we moved about to get on the train. "i'm fine just glad to be at hogwarts" i said giving her a smile making her loosen up again. "would you like to sit with me on the train?" she asked, "oh i'd love to" i say as she grabs my arm looking for an open carriage finally finding an empty one.

lily had pushed me into it while giggling, "hopefully severus will find us" she said sitting next to me, "keep your eye out for him" i said as i put my trunk in the compartment above us, then lily did the same before she nodded watching the door. i crossed my legs and pulled out a book. i glance over at lily and she basically has her face pressed against the door watching people pass by.

she looked over as let out a loud laugh, she smiled but realized my smile had dropped and i was now glancing at the door. lily turned her head to james potter, she let out a big sigh as he smiled widely and slid open the door. "lily flower!" james yelled his face lighting up as lily slouched. "hello james" she said and looked at me i mouthed a little im sorry.

james walked in putting his trunk in the other overhead, "remus! sirius! peter! over here" james yelled out with his head out the door then coming back and smiling at us. james sat across from lily, "lily flower how are you? i sent you so many letters you never wrote back" james said sounding a little hurt as we could hear bickering back and forth "no sirius stop pushing you git" remus' voice became clear as he was getting pushed into our carriage.

sirius' laugh was loud of course he was overall loud, remus had slightly fallen onto me but got up quickly with his face all red " i'm so sorry y/n sirius–" i cut him off with a small chuckle "it's fine remus don't worry about it, sit" i said and smiled slightly moving over a bit. he nodded and put his trunk in the last space on our overhead then sat down between lily and i. sirius gave remus a weird look before putting his and peters trunks in their overhead then plopping down next to james.

remus pulled out his own book and a little bag of chocolate. i could feel sirius eyeing me disapprovingly as if i had done something to him. "uh y/n how was your summer?" james asked, i looked over at lily and she didn't seem upset or anything so why was he asking me? she seemed like she was interested in a conversation with all of us. "oh uh fine boring actually. how was your summer potter?" i asked adjusting myself and closing my book slightly, remus had perked up too slightly closing his book paying attention to the new conversation between two people that have barely talked let alone say more than three words to each other. james smiled a bit "great! sirius was basically at my house all summer but also sad because lily flower never returned any of my letters" he said glancing at lily and she rolled her eyes. "i'll say it once more james i never received any letters" she groaned and i laughed a bit.

"remus how was your summer?" lily asked as he grew shy and swallowed his chocolate "fine actually visited France and Italy with my mum" he said "oh that's fun. i've only been to France once but barely got to do anything but how was Italy?" i said turning towards him. his eyes darted to sirius and james, james did a keep talking gesture to him, remus cleared his throat fixing his posture. "it's was very beautiful, people were very nice and the food was great" he said nervously and scratched his neck, "what did you guys do?" i ask.

"we went to a book store and a museum" he answered, i looked down at his book "did you get this there?" i ask grazing my fingers over his book. "uh yeah" he says with a little breathy laugh, "what's it about?" i say moving my hair off my shoulder. "it's a romance. a uh muggle book" he said and the air thickened at the word 'muggle' lily tensed up biting her nails waiting for what i was going to say. remus gulped and sirius' intense stare sent needles through my body. i know what they expected, it's what everyone expected even what my parents expected the word they said often even though it's so mean.

"i'd love to borrow it from you sometime when you're finished" i say, lilys wide stare went to james and he gave her the same one back the look of disbelief, why that look? had they talked about this before? had she told him i'm not like the other purebloods. i assume the conversation going "why do you hang out with her" "she's not that bad" "have you heard about her family." getting strung out of my thoughts as remus smiled "oh yeah of course, i'm almost finished actually" he said pink tinted his cheeks as his hair was slightly messy.

i smile and continue the friendly banter durning the train ride.

"have fun with james lily" i teased as she rolled her eyes cheeks tinting pink, "yeah yeah y/n" lily said walking to the gryffindor table. i sighed and sat at my regular seat at the end of the table by the doors, i sighed not paying attention to dumbledore speech let alone the sorting ceremony.

"y/l/n" regulus greeted me as he sat down, "oh hello regulus" i mumble as people started putting food on their plates. "how are you?" he said taking a sip of his tea, regulus and i talked from time to time probably because we were the only ones that could stand each other. "good and you?" i ask cutting the meat that was on my plate. he hummed in response.

dinner was soon over and we were dismissed to our common rooms. walking with regulus was normally what happened on the first day, the comfortable silence that we had made once we first became okay friends it was awkward at first but now it's common and relaxing. "pureblood" regulus said and we walked into the common room, the green tint had become relaxing but at the beginning it was obnoxious and made my head hurt, "goodnight regulus" i mutter and smile rubbing my eyes. "night y/l/n" he said.

i walked up the stairs to the girls dorms, i opened my dorm door it had been the same since first year with the same girls. i like them they were nice and almost as bubbly as lily, one of them had been shunned by some other slytherins because the hat was going to but her in hufflepuff but changed his mind.

i plopped down on my bed and sighed, rose had been reading waiting for the other girls to come into the door because sometimes they were loud and would most definitely wake her up. i sat up and opened my trunk making small talk with rose while i was at it. i grabbed my pajama pants and black t shirt and sat it on my bed. i pulled off my robe and sat it beside me then taking off my black turtleneck then putting on my t shirt. i did the same with my skirt i had on. i stretched and fixed my pajamas pant leg as it has rode up my leg.

i pulled out my white button up and grey skirt with my grey sweater vest that went over my button up, i put all of my uniform on the hanger and hung it by my bed way too tired to fix everything into my wardrobe, i moved the clothes on my bed to the trunk and on in bed snuggling up "goodnight rose" i mumble and smile "night! y/n" she said and turned out the light.

I spent a month reading harry potter fanfics and here’s what I learned

So for the past three and a half weeks, I’ve been doing basically nothing but reading Harry Potter fanfics and now I kind of just want to talk about them. No one cares but future me will! I tend to get caught in obsessions fairly easily (for instance, two months ago was comic books and last month was video editing and then k dramas). I’m feeling like my Harry Potter obsession is fading which makes me really sad cause it was a fun ride. I went from Drarry to Hinny, time travel to alternate realities, obscuris Harry to Dark!Harry, MCU AUs to Doctor Who AUs. I must’ve read more than 50 fics.

I’ve learned that I hate Dumbledore

Snape makes for a great mentor but I will only like him with proper character development

also where did Snape being Draco’s godfather come from? I don’t think this was in the books? I’m not angry, just confused

I read a fic that was so sad that I was physically unable to finish reading it -- actually I read two of those, one of them was a DID fic and the other Voldemort adopted Harry

the Voldemort one is quite possibly the most tragic thing I have ever read and even though it’s been two weeks I still haven’t been able to recover -- I was only halfway finished too GOOD LORD

another fic I read that was so fucking depressing was a time loop situation where Harry literally couldn’t get out of and it ended tragically

obscuris Harry is interesting but I really only like the ones where Newt is actually involved but I couldn’t find any finished ones

I don’t like it when Harry’s appearance changes, it throws me for a loop

there was this one where Harry got sent back in time and his figure got disfigured and so he didn’t even appear like himself anymore

I just find it odd for Harry Potter not to look like Harry Potter, idk

I also have a headcanon that his hair is very curly rather than shaggy

I haven’t been able to find a fic where Harry goes back in time to the Marauders era and has the right amount of angst but the right amount of fluff

I’ve read some good ones where the Marauders travel to Harry’s time but like,,, it isn’t quite what I’m looking for? I’m gonna have to write it, aren’t I?

this doesn’t happen with irondad fics, literally everything you’ve ever wanted you can find it there

I read one where Harry did go back in time but she (fem!Harry) didn’t really interact with her parents or the Marauders that much, she became friends with Regulus instead

Regulus should’ve been in Gryffindor

I’ve not only read fics where Draco has been a Ravenclaw, Slytherin, but also a Gryffindor. I haven’t found one where he’s in Hufflepuff

I’ve read fics where Harry’s in every single house - the Ravenclaw one might be my favorite so far, it had to do with him going to a different timeline where there’s another Harry and he’s a major dick

Hufflepuff Harry one was funny, but it got distressing cause Dumbledore didn’t trust him and tried to get him expelled

actually the Hufflepuff one made my heart hurt cause Harry was put in the body of a Harry who isn’t the boy who lived and barely spoke and was basically like an even more traumatized Neville

Slytherin Harry is everything to me and he should’ve been in Slytherin

Ravenclaw Draco is something that can be so personal

I’m tired of reading Year One fics, I get it, there’s a stone, let’s move on

Year Four fics are my favorite however, there was one (which is my favorite) where Harry’s a necromancer and in the graveyard scene he calls corpses from the graves alive to help him get out of there it was so cool

I am partial to Harry/Draco but Harry/Luna is cute

there was a Pokemon Harry/Luna one that’s adorable and I’ve read it twice already

I like when there’s a ton of lore involved

especially Hogwarts lessons - like ancient runes can fucking get it, I love runes fics

there was an MCU AU one where I read Harry didn’t have his magic anymore, not as potent as it was, but he did have ancient runes

LISTEN I tried to get into Dark!Harry but after that Voldemort adoption one I can’t do it anymore, I will start crying literally right now -- he just wants to be fucking useful! He just wants to be loved! Is that too much to fucking ask for?

however Harry doing dark!magic but isn’t actually on the dark side is cool

Death Eater Spy Draco! It makes me distressed but also I am so here for it!

I read a ton of Avengers adopt Harry when he’s younger but I don’t care for younger Harry fics, I prefer when he’s a teenager and I don’t have to read the first few years at Hogwarts, it can get repetitive

Give me all the angst with Harry being a horcrux please, I’m living for the drama

Lily is not a fan favorite weirdly enough, when the Marauders are in fics she’s usually not there which is unfortunate because I just really want a good Harry/Lily bonding moment

one of the saddest fics I read was where harry, luna, hermione and neville find themselves in an alternate dimension where Lily and Remus are married and alive, James is a dick but has other kids, and every single person that had died in their world is alive

I don’t like it when there’s Ron bashing, he’s one of my favorites, but if I have to, I’ll read some of them

there was this Sherlock fic (listen, I went in fucking deep, it’s been a weird month) where fem!Harry is on the run from the Ministry because I don’t actually understand and Ron and everyone is out for blood for her

Eleventh Doctor/Harry is a pairing I was not aware of but I actually kind of love?

Master of Death Harry is fucking OP and I love him for that

So is On Punching Gods and Absentee Dads, I realized it was the same author when I read in the author notes that the author was going to some volcano convention thing and I was like this is way too niche for it to be a coincidence

The Poor Development of the Marauder's Era

I've recently been listening to Binge Mode and, even now, I honestly believe the Marauder's era is some of Rowling’s worst writing of the series. When I say Marauder's Era, I'm simply referring to characters and events pre Harry.

The Marauder's era isn't poorly developed because I didn't like what happened. It's poorly developed because of how Rowling handled the characters, the events she put them in, and the reaction to said events.

As a kid, I respected Lily and thought she could do no wrong. As an adult, I find her decisions questionable. For transparency purposes, I read these books in real time and was a similar age as the characters. So, I don't want to hear anything about me being "unfair." Of all of the Mauraders era kids back then, I was the most generous to Lily. It's only when I reflected more about her role in the series that I realized how lackluster she is as a character and as a friend.

Rowling relies on Lily being seen as the moral compass to signify who and what is right or wrong during this era. The problem with this is that Rowling undermines Lily in the process. Minus being flat out called Mudblood by Snape, she has no proof that Snape has done anything her friends accused him of doing, but she unequivocally views it as the truth. Despite Lily listening to Snape, it's not really in good faith because she already has her mind made up about Snape's guilt.

Now, this is important to note because since Lily hasn't seen any of Snape's alleged bad behavior for herself, why would she definitively accuse him of these things? Lily claims she was in denial about this when she ended their friendship, but it's quite obvious she does believe Snape is guilty.

What makes Lily's beliefs and choosing to side with others over Snape is that none of the Marauders have ever mentioned ONE instant of Snape doing or saying some fucked up shit. As a reminder: THEY HATED HIM. They never mentioned anything about him bullying others, calling muggles mud blood, or any other troubling behavior. It was merely because he existed. They couldn't even tie him to being a Death Eater.

Also, let's consider the fact that kids like Snape have rumors made up about them all of the time. ALL OF THE TIME. Not even Snape's own bullies could attest to Snape doing the things Lily's friends claimed Snape did, yet Lily believed their words?

And, maybe I'm being nitpicky, but the fact that Lily says "my friends" in reference to defending Snape has always rubbed me the wrong way. Snape IS her friend too. Her best friend, in fact. Why wouldn't she have said, "my OTHER friends." My Gryffindor mates or whatever? IMO, that implies that Snape is just some weirdo she talks to and not the person she's known the longest.

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED THIS:

Have Lily overhear Snape calling one of his peers Mudblood. Have the Marauders be incensed that Snape called someone a mud blood. Have them call out Lily when she tries to intervene on them confronting (confronting NOT bullying) Snape. Hell, even have Snape fucking bully someone.

Because as far as canon goes, Snape was a bystander as death eater wannabes bullied people and presumably did nothing about it. We don't see any of his alleged wrongdoings and the people who hate him can't even recall that this happened.

There shouldn't be an ambiguity or readers relying on the word and opinion of Lily to guide their opinion.

Some may say, "she's only a kid." To this I say, "You're right." Lily was a teen and teens don't always know how to handle complex situations, I will give her the benefit of the doubt. However, this means we shouldn't hold her as the moral standard.

Lily essentially says that the difference between the Marauder's bullying people and the death eater wannabes doing it is dark magic. I'm sorry, but that's weak sauce. Dark magic is such a vague and broad thing depending on what you're talking about, so nah...Also, is there something not dark about James choking Snape with soap? I mean, that could've traumatized Snape to the extent of him being triggered by soap. Isn't that dark?

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED THAT.

Jut have Lily acknowledge that behaviors by the Marauders and death eater wannabes are both bad, but for different reasons. Problem solved. She can even emphasize that she takes so much issue with Dark Magic due to why it's being used and what it ties into.

We hear how great Lily is and that everyone loves her, yet Harry meets literally NOT ONE FRIEND of Lily's. He meets James' friends and a former teacher of hers. We don't see Lily hanging out with anyone else. We hear examples of Lily feeling sad for people, but no references to her actually helping people or supporting others somehow.

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED THAT.

Maybe instead of Lily talking about the bad thing Avery and Mulciber did, she could've intervened, even if it was too late, and "saved" Mary. Hell, we could've had Lily hex James rather than just threatening it. I'm sorry, after literally reading the many ways the Golden Trio are there for each other even before big shit started to happen, Lily threatening to hex someone who is actively bullying her friend doesn't cut it.

And give her her own friends for Harry to meet.

Lily is said to be smart and empathic, but how she deals with Snape and his issues don't exactly support this.

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED IT.

Have Lily genuinely listen to Snape's grievances about the night he was saved. Don't have her be so dismissive about the Lupin thing. Maybe have Snape set up by the Marauders and the big reveal is a flop.

I know Rowling wanted to tackle people having shady pasts and how they can change, but 1. Either she needed to commit to it being a rivalry or 2. She needed to appropriately deal with the bullshit the Marauder's did. Snape is justifiably angry and distrusting of the Marauders due to one almost killing him as a joke and the other publicly humiliating him. This doesn't even account for YEARS of bullying, which remus admitted happened.

We cannot say that bullying is wrong, and then excuse the bullies because they were on the right side of a war.

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED THIS.

She should've had Remus flat out acknowledge they were wrong for what they did and that there was no excusing it. Then, have Sirius and Remus privately talk about this where Sirius admits it too. OR, despite loving them and his dad, Harry realizes how flawed they were and that their reasoning is simply to protect their dad not necessarily because James grew up. OR Rowling could've not written James and Sirius behaving as psychopaths AS WELL AS show instances of Snape starting shit with them.

SHOW US Snape deliberately starting shit with the Marauders and James trying to apologize. Show us James' growth outside of that. Don't tell us that James is secretly hexing Snape behind Lily's back because it has her looking like a dumb ass.

Also, all of this James stuff is important because Lily ending up with James is such a bad fucking look. IMO, it makes her disgust at his behavior seem performative. It says that she didn't really care about him bullying others, but rather, the perception of her being with someone who bullied others. And, no, having Lily smile as Snape was actively being bullied, and then poverty shaming him isn't a good look.

"BUT, BUT SNAPE CALLED HER A RACIST SLUR!!!"

It doesn't matter how much you want to give your friend the benefit of the doubt, if you believe he's calling others racist slurs, you need to confront it. And, if you believe it to be true, you need to end it. You don't wait until he calls you the slur to say, "hey, maybe he really is this racist person people claim he is."

HOW ROWLING COULD'VE FIXED THIS.

After James saved Snape's life, this is where he could've matured and his big head lessened. He still hexes others, but leaves Snape alone because he realized that they went to far with him even before Sirius' "prank." Instead of James being the antagonizer, it should've been Sirius. Once again, James breaks this up and he and Sirius gets into a small argument. Snape is let down as Lily runs up and Snape says his mud blood remark.

Snape then tries to hex Sirius and James steps in once Snape refuses to stop. It gets out of hand and Snape accidentally harms Lily.

I won't lie, I'm a HUGE Snape fan. However, because of how Rowling handled this era, there are many ambiguous things, situations that don't make any sense, not enough development of characters, etc which undermines the story she tried to tell.

Yes, I do love the series, except I don't like any of the Marauders or Lily. I don't hate Lily, but she grates. Remus really was a coward and irresponsible as hell. Sirius was childish as fuck and, no, him being in prison doesn't excuse or justify all of his behavior. James saved his peer's life, and then publicly humiliated and sexually assaulted him. He didn't stop bullying, he just stopped how he did it.

This doesn't mean I believe that Snape was faultless, but I believe this era was so poorly told that by default, I believe and sympathize with Snape.

Although I believe Rowling wanted readers to do this, I don't think she planned for some readers such as myself to hold the positions we do. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Snape as is, but I do believe Rowling didn't intend for me to hold the views I do about Lily and the Marauders.

I don't understand her laziness during this era, especially since it's so key in Snape, Lily, and James' stories.

Lastly, she could've developed James and Lily better.

I know she only has so much time, space, pages blah blah blah. However, the best writers find a way to make it work with what they have.
