What I loved about Thor: L&T

Where do I start? Cause I loved it hell I've seen it twice. Yes, it could have been 30 minutes longer. I'm ignoring the obvious media campaign against (Rotten Tomatoes Seriously?! Who cares?) and the UTube reviewer bro squad that's disappointed it's not the "R" word all over again. Like damn, get over it!

Jane! Jane is the heart and soul of this movie. Sadly, it became obvious that no director with the exception of Kenneth from Thor 1 was interested in developing her character. Like no one! Not the Russos, not Joss Whedon, not Alan Taylor and not Marvel. You give me a legend and I’d find something to do with her but that's just me *checks nails* So someone send Taika a fruit basket! In phase 1,2,3 female characters were underdeveloped plot devices (See Black Widow) Jane is someone you want to root for! We see her not only be vulnerable and weak but strong and loyal. We see her fight two battles, one against cancer and one against Gorr. You wanted her to survive and to live on to fight with Thor. When she died people in the theater cried and people were genuinely upset/shocked that she died. That’s a hero regardless of gender. Thor loses yet another person and this time it’s the love of his life. She also doesn’t receive a personality transplant; she's still the same space chick just muscled. Jane wasn’t just ill, she also looked ill and it was great! She didn’t have to look like a model all the time. I loved Jane fighting with Mew-Mew. The general consensus? Everyone wanted more of her story.

Fosterson? Thane? Thor and Jane. I’m here for it! I always liked them together but now I'm shipping them. She didn’t replace Thor as people feared. It wasn’t a passing of the hammer. They were truly equals. He protected her and she protected him. They both brought their individual strengths to the story. The entire world seemed to want to know why they broke up and that got answered in a realistic way. Watching them in love in their montage was cute! I appreciate that Taika was very aware of the criticism towards the couple. Yes, they are different but it works! General consensus? We wanted more of them.

Christian freaking Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. Wow. What an actor. He spooked me out and yet I delighted in him. He was born out of rage and heartbreak. I was hoping he would be in at least two movies. He’s a compelling character. Loved that he and Jane had their fatal parallels. Fate answered them with weapons. Jane got Mew-Mew and Gorr got the necrosword. Where Mew-Mew gave Jane agency and the power to do good. The necrosword was a tool for Gorr’s grief and revenge. General consensus? We would have wanted this parallel to be explored more.

The battle in the shadow realm was stunning! I’m actually really annoyed it wasn’t longer. I know it was longer because it had more violence and that was something that had to be cut down on. General consensus? We wanted more.

Valkyrie and Jane! This little friendship was cute, and I liked it. Valkyrie didn’t annoy me which was surprising. She annoyed me in Ragnarok (Yes, I know I’m one of the minorities)

The music choices were surprising, and I really liked them. As someone who lived for G&R it was great. I love the 80s. I love that the 80s are having a revival.

This film has some pretty ballsy themes like loss of faith, increase in worshiping celebrity heroes, nihilism, making the most of your life and courage in the face of mortality. It’s a marvel summer blockbuster movie; they aren’t going to go fully into it. I’m still impressed.

Thor looked at the arrangement.

A fine blanket laid on the ground with the finest feast he could acquire for this moment. He hoped Jane would find it good enough. She was fascinated with Asgard and he noticed a beautiful clearing within Vaneihim as he passed through on his journey because of the convergence. He really wanted her to like it.

Then the rainbow colors of the bifrost shot down near him and there stood Jane.

She smiled,”I love that way of travel. It is so beautiful. Very fast as well.”

Thor smiled as well, “I am glad you like it so well. I organized a small feast for us today.”

She looked at everything and laughed, “a small feast? This is enough for a lot of people.” She then looked at him with a small, “Well maybe just enough for you.”

Thor mused, “I guess I do eat more than normal mortals. Well.. let us eat then.”

Jane sat on the blanket, feeling the smooth silk. “I don’t think this is a blanket that should be used on the ground. It is too nice.”

“Nonsense. This particular blanket is actually made for royalty to lounge outside on the ground.”

Jane picked a peace of meat and placed it in her mouth.. “Oh that is good.” She smiled at Thor’s quick laughter. “That is one of my favorites. It is meat from the largest boars in the mountains here.”

“Is all the food from here?”

“Yes. I know you have enjoyed the food from my home and I wanted you to try the foods from here as well.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate this. Are picnics normal for Asgard as well?”

“Some people enjoy eating outside on blankets. I remember seeing a few in the park on Midgard, you told me the name. As well that you never enjoyed one yourself. I wanted to give you the experience.”

Jane had a large smile on her face, then tried to control it. “You are very thoughtful. I can’t believe you remembered that. I barely do.”

“I will remember all of the things that deal with you. You are very special to me, Jane Foster.”

Jane blushed and looked at the food to see what else she might want to try. Thor held a grape to her.

“I almost forgot. The grapes are from Asgard. I remembered that you are very fond of them.”

Jane met his eyes and he held the grape closer to her lips that opened tenitavely. She smiled as her mouth closed, chewing the grape. Thor took one as well. Smiling as the flavor exploded in his mouth.

They ate, talked, and enjoyed the scenery. Thor shared with her the way he traveled during the convergence and happened to see this beautiful clearing in the woods. She claimed that she would love to travel with him everywhere. Thor said he would enjoy having her but not everywhere he needed to go would be safe for her. He could not risk her, or even entertain the idea of putting her in danger.

Jane shrugged. “I wish I could see everything. All of this, the other realms. I would love to study all of it.”

“I wish you could too. However I will not put you in danger in any way.”

“I’m not sure if I want to accept that caring excuse because I’m thinking of all the research I could do.”

“You have a brilliant mind, Jane. One of the many things I like about you.”

“I like a lot about you too.”

Okay so maybe rewatching Thor for the Loki content was a bad idea because wow the ending of Loki really does parallel the ending of that movie, the way Jane searches for Thor with her scientific equipment because that's how she found him in the first place, the way Mobius waits for Loki at his own spot on the timeline because he knows that's where Loki would choose to be, the way both brothers know their loves still have hope for them and they smile

Jane Foster is one of my all time favorite comic book characters! Her fight against cancer is truly inspiring. As a person with poor health and many struggles Jane has always been a very relatable character.

MCU YT Reviewers? Have they always been this bad?!

As I was really looking forward to Thor 4, I decided for the first time ever to check out some MCU youtube reviewers for tidbits and their initial thoughts on the film annnnddddd I'll never make that mistake again.

If you enjoyed the movie ignore these people. Why do I care if someone else didn't like something? Why would you? If you like something who cares what someone on Youtube thinks?! If you didn't like it, that's still cool.

You can twiddle down everyone's complaints, mine included, to it should have been longer. We wanted to see more, not less, and that's not ever a bad thing.

We're all free to like something or not like something and make that opinion known. Art should be discussed! Comic books and their movies contain the universal themes of life, philosophy and psychology that are hidden behind action, magic or powers. This makes it easier to process especially for kids. Where does that go wrong? Oh I don't know maybe when pretentious asses who take themselves way too seriously and overthink things to the point they miss subtlety, plot points, plot devices and then blame the movie on their own personal shortcomings? Possibly there. Or, possibly when someone is just negative and a bad time to the point they give you a headache? Maybe it's when by their own admission (Jeremy Jahns who at least owned up to it) they didn't pay that much attention to the film during their first viewing so they asked basic questions the film answered? I don't know.

Why did these people bother me? Because I'm an artist and I respect art. I love storytelling and visual art. I love film and I respect the amount of work that goes into it. I don't like people who are just trying rain on people's parade and shit on their work..... conveniently while they get paid from YouTube or some publication to do so.

Important to note: New Rockstars, Implicitly Pretentious, ScreenCrush, Blind Wave and to a lesser extent Reel Rejects are the exceptions I found. Even more so, Implicitly Pretentious has done amazing visual essays on the marvel universe with thought, research, time and care.

Maybe if I had watched one video from some bro who couldn't let their fixation of Thor: Ragnarök go to enjoy what another movie had to offer, it wouldn't have been so bad. However, I watched about 10 and I wanted to drive a screwdriver through my head.
