Ozpin pulls Ruby into the shadow war when she starts showing promise at Signal, keeping it a secret from Qrow

“Ruby Rose, please report to the headmaster’s office.”

Ruby hesitated as all eyes went to her for a brief moment as a few of the students started to mutter amongst themselves about why Ruby of all people was being called to see the headmaster. She didnt realize her arm was shaking until she felt Goldmary’s hand on her.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Goldmary tried to reassure her. “We all know that bully had it coming to him, and you stepping in was the right thing.”

Ivy, another of Ruby’s friends, nodded in agreement. “Besides, didnt you say your dad saw the whole thing? Worst case, you end up in trouble and he’s there to back you up, right?”

“Thanks, but that’s not exactly what I’m worried about.” Ruby took a breath to steady herself and stood up to grab her things. “I did what I believe is the right thing. What I’m worried about is that Uncle Qrow found out and is here to congratulate me.”

Goldmary looked at her curiously. “Why would he do that?”

“Because I’m sure that if he finds out, he’ll be certain I’m turning out to be just like he was at our age. Same place for lunch, right?”

Goldmary nodded. “And dont worry about what everyone else thinks, Ivy and I will shoot down any rumors that come up.”

Ruby gave a small smile and started to walk through the quiet halls of Signal Academy to the Headmaster’s office, her mind still racing with every worst case scenario on why she was called to the office. She always made sure to keep her head down and out of trouble, only stirring up trouble a few times when someone needed help. But still, that didnt seem to ease her as she kept a smile on her face and slowly opened the door to the main office. “I-I’m here to see the headmaster.”

The receptionist looked over Ruby and nodded. “I’ll let him know you’re here.”

Ruby took a seat and sat down as she watched the receptionist open the Headmaster’s door and walk into the office. Her heart pounded in her chest as seconds became minutes while she watched the receptionist walk back to her seat and start running through some paperwork. Of course this had to be because she stood up for someone, right? Sure, she may have gone a little overboard with breaking an arm, but she had learned from Yang that sometimes showing someone what you’re willing to do was the only way to stop a bully from coming back. “*You have to scare them*” she would always say.

“The headmaster will see you now.”

Ruby practically jumped when she heard the receptionist speak to her, quickly grabbing her things and nearly falling over out of her seat. Once she managed to situate her things in her arms, she made her way into the Headmaster’s office, slowly walking in as she pushed the door open. “You… wanted to see me?”

The Headmaster nodded and motioned to Ozpin. “This is Professor Ozpin, the Headmaster from Beacon Academy. From the looks of it, you’ve caught his attention with your grades and your combat abilities and he would like to talk to you about your future as a huntress in training.”

Ruby froze for a moment as she looked over Ozpin, no longer sure what to think. Sure, she was relieved that this had nothing to do with breaking another student’s arm, but seeing the headmaster of the academy she had dreamed of going to, the same academy that her parents had gone to… all of it felt like a dream. She quickly sat down once she managed to calm herself a bit and smiled at him. “P-Professor Ozpin. I know exactly who you are.”

Ozpin smiled and sat down next to her. “Just as your current headmaster said, you’ve caught my attention and I think you’re the kind of huntress that I’ve been looking for.”

“Been looking for? What exactly do you mean?”

Ozpin motioned to the Headmaster of Signal to leave the room for a moment. “From what I’ve seen, I think you’ll have a bright future ahead of yourself. And so I would like to offer you the opportunity to start at Beacon with the new school year and to study under me until this school year is over.”

“To study under you?” Ruby asked. “I-isnt that a bit… forward to be asking? The school year is almost over, and I will still need to talk to Dad about making sure that I can go to Beacon next year, and I’m sure Qrow wouldnt want this to get in the way of training with my scythe-”

“And that is exactly why I want to train you personally.” Ozpin stood up and pulled out his scroll, flipping through some footage that was sent of Ruby on mock missions through Signal. “I’ve seen what you can do, Miss Rose, and I’ve been keeping my eye on you and your training. I’ve seen how you handle mock missions going wrong, the way you can keep people safe from grimm like a huntress would. You’re special and I would like to make sure that your training shows exactly who you can be.”

“Thank you, but… why me? I’m still in training and still a bit garbage with my scythe. A-and I still have a lot to learn-”

“Because the world needs someone like you, Ruby Rose. The world needs a kind and honest soul to step up and save it.”

“I…I dont understand.”

“Tell me, what is your favorite fairytale?”

Ruby went quiet as she thought it over, watching Ozpin stay calm. It was hard to pick from so many that she had read and the ones that her dad and Yang used to read to her when she was younger. Finally, she spoke, the words coming out just as easy as she thought them. “The Warrior in the woods.”

“And what if I told you that that fairytale, among others, is a true story?”

“But its just a fairytale, a story that we’re told when we’re little. To let us know that even if there is someone out there that can protect us, that we still need to learn how to protect ourselves and be there for those who need us.”

Ozpin smiled a bit as he adjusted his glasses for a moment and sat down next to Ruby once more. “You have silver eyes, just like the woman in the story. Didnt you ever wonder why its such a rare color, such a rare trait for others to have?”

“Well… yes…”

“Then come see me after class gets out. I have a few other students I would like to speak to as well while I’m here, so I’ll be around for a while.”

Ruby nodded and slowly picked herself up and left the office as the headmaster of Signal made his way back into the office. Her mind reeled with questions from Ozpin as she walked back to class, only pausing as she heard the bell that let class out ring through the empty hallway. “Faiytales cant be real,” she told herself as she made her way to the cafeteria. “Its a nice thought, but… I know that’s not how the real world works. But… maybe talking to him after class wouldnt hurt.”

A look into the multiverse chapter 9. Reacts by @bssaz97

The members of the audience began reconvening to their seats as the next viewing was about to begin. With the many different worlds they had seen, there was no telling what they would be seeing next.

"Wonder what kind of world we'll see today," Yang states.

"I have a good feeling about this one. Maybe it'll show us as expert huntresses on a mission to save the world!" Ruby enthusiastically told her team.

"...Ruby that's what we're currently doing in our world." Weiss replies with an unimpressed look.

"Ohhh yeah… Well maybe it'll be different!" Ruby adds, causing her teammates and sister to roll their eyes.

The screen rolls and shows Taiyang at home on Patch, making steaks on a grill with a huge smile on his face.

"Finally, the girls are coming home after so long." Taiyang mutters to him "Better to start cooking now before the girls come. Tai's face falls into a frown.

"Hey look Yang it's Dad!" Ruby points out, excited to see her father once again. Even if it was on the screen.

"Yeah. Actually, this looks exactly like our house back in Patch." Yang was a bit confused why the setting of this world was so similar to their own.

Most of the world's they've seen thus far were much different from their own. Which made her think of what could possibly be different about this world compared to theirs.

"Oh yeah. That's right. Ruby's bringing her boyfriend here. Tai sighs and adds another steak to the grill and turns to yell into the house.

"Say WHAAAT?!" Ruby's eyes grew nearly twice their size and a look of shock had grown on her face.

"Ruby… has a boyfriend?" Blake questioned.

Nearly in her peer group turned their eyes from the screen and looked to the crimsonette in shock. Ruby notices their stares and quickly grabs her hood and covers her face in embarrassment.

"Red has a boyfriend in this one? Now that's something I never expected to see today," Coco stated before turning back around to face the screen. Her team followed as well.

Ruby whimpered to herself, while she was slightly embarrassed about the revelation of her alternate having a boyfriend she was curious as to see who this said boyfriend was.

"ZWEI! DON'T EAT THIS EXTRA STEAK, IT'S FOR RUBY'S BOYFRIEND!" He didn't get a response. Taiyang sighed again. "Guess he's asleep. He mutters to himself. He took the steaks off the grill and as he walked back into the house he heard the door open and heard his daughters yell into the house.

"WE'RE HOMEEEEEEEE!" Taiyang rushed up to his girls and hugged them tightly. Yang and Ruby hugging him back just as tightly.

"Whoa you two look the same as you did back in Beacon!" Nora stated. Her expression started falling as soon as she mentioned the last part.

Ruby had removed her hood and she began recalling past events. If she was right then this was taking place at the time when her and Yang went back to Patch to visit their Dad shortly before the Vytal Festival.

Hopefully they wouldn't have to revisit those memories during this viewing.

"Hey Dad!" Yang cooed looking at her father with a smile.

"Did ya miss us?" Ruby asks,smiling as well.

Taiyang pretends to ponder on it for a while before grinning at them.

"Nope." He said jokingly to both, laughing when Ruby and Yang punch him in the arm lightly. Taiyang looks around a bit. "Uh. Where is this boyfriend of yours Ruby?"

Ruby's eyes light up. "Oh he's coming with our bags. Trust me daddy. You'll love him!"

Taiyang lets out a snort. "We'll see."

Yang began to look around the house as well. "Where Zwei? I thought he would be down here to greet us?"

Taiyang saw that Zwei was indeed not there and grumbled to himself. "That boy. ZWEI! YOUR SISTERS ARE HOME!"

"Sisters?" Both Ruby, Yang, and Qrow said at the same time, leaving all of them very confused. Zwei was indeed a part of the family, but he was still Corgi after all. So why did Taiyang refer to him as though he wasn't such?

Their question was answered very quickly.

Zwei's ears twitch at the sound of that, and a thumping comes from up stairs aside the noise of something falling down the stairs, before Yang and Ruby could react a black blur launch itself at them. A Ten year old dog faunus boy with curly unkempt hair color that matched Ruby's and little corgi ears was hugging the two tightly raising his head to show silver eyes beaming with joy.

"Ruby! Yang! I missed, I missed you, I missed you! He cried out hugging them tighter. The girls laugh and hug him back.

Ruby's, Yang's, and Qrow's eyes reached the size of dinner plates and they couldn't believe what they were seeing was real.

Ruby was the first to speak and began visibly shaking, "Oh my gods...Zwei- he's...he's..."

"Sooo Adorable!~" Ruby/Weiss/Yang/Nora cooed as the good little boy she remembered from Beacon was now literally an adorable little boy.

Blake, the rest of ALP(N), Qrow and Ozpin were shocked beyond words. This certainly was not what they were expecting at all today.

"Wait who's Zwei?" Oscar turned to ask Qrow.

"Well...in our world, he's the family dog. But in this world it seems like he's the youngest child?" Qrow said but still seemed unsure of himself.

As he remembers, Summer only had one child in the form of Ruby. But this world's version of Zwei shares many of the same traits that Summer and Ruby have/had….but why was he a faunus? Was this world's version of Summer a faunus? These questions were beginning to cause Qrow a headache so he resigned himself to just watch the viewing. Hopefully some of his questions could be answered.

"Hey Zwei!" Yang greeted ruffling his hair.

"How's my baby brother doing?" Ruby asked lightly, pinching his cheeks letting go when he tried to swat her hand away.

"Oh!~ Look at his hair, his lil ears and his lil cheeks. I just wanna pinch them all day!" Ruby cooed. She never had the privilege of having a younger sibling, so seeing that her alternate had one left her somewhat envious.

However, she still loved her family after all and wouldn't trade them for anything. But she could at least relish in the moment for as long as she was allowed to.

Zwei kept smiling and went to babble on about what he did while they were gone, about the games he wanted to play with them when he was interrupted by the sound of bags hitting the floor and looked behind Yang and Ruby to see a very tall Blonde.

"Jeez girls. You had to make me carry all of those? Jaune said while giving Ruby and Yang a halfhearted glare.

Suddenly the room became silent once more, a very recurring theme happening in this viewing as the reveal of Ruby Rose's mystery boyfriend was revealed.

The two team leaders both looked towards each other if only for a brief moment before turning away and blushing up a storm. The members of their teams, minus Weiss as she was too engrossed in looking at tiny Faunus Zwei, observed both reactions of Ruby and Jaune before turning back towards the screen. They could discuss this matter another time, as they still had a viewing to see.

Qrow, however, saw the short display between the two and his eyes narrowed. He had a feeling he was going to have to keep a close eye on those two. Particularly Jaune.

Ruby grinned and walked up to Jaune and began to slowly rub his arm. "Aww was it too much for my big tough guy hm?" She cooed snuggling up to and turning to her father and brother. "This is my boyfriend Jaune!" She shoved him in front of them. Jaune nervously looked toward Taiyang and reached his hand out.

"Hello sir. I'm Jaune Arc." He said keeping a stutter out of his voice and his hand steady

Taiyang raised an eyebrow at that. "Arc? …...What is your mother's name?"

"Uh Jeanne?" He still had his hand outstretched. Taiyang let out a large groan and grabbed Jaune's hand firmly shaking it.

"Nice to meet you Jaune." Tai said, with a forced smile leaving Jaune and Ruby confused.

Yang's eyebrow quirked, "What the heck was that about?"

"Is this not normally how your Dad reacts when either of you bring a boy home?" Blake asks her partner.

"Actually, Ruby and I never brought any boys home. At least I never did, too risky and I knew he would overreact. Ruby on the other hand hasn't dated anyone in… ever. But that's not what I was talking about."

"What did you mean then?" Blake looked confused.

"It's more with how he reacted when Jaune told him his mom's name. It's just weird I guess, Dad didn't talk too much about his days as a student in Beacon so maybe he's got some form of beef with Mama Arc." Yang theorized. She leaned towards where Jaune was seated and nudged him, "Hey VB."

"Hm What? I'm sorry Yang did you want something?" Jaune asked, looking very tense.

"You know about any beef between your mom and a guy named Taiyang?" Yang inquired.

"Oh. Uhhh, no I don't remember her mentioning anybody by that name. At least to my knowledge. Wait, isn't that your Dad's name?"

"Yeah I just wanted to ask you since I don't know anything about any beef between our parents. Oh well, question for later. Thanks anyway." Yang patted his shoulder with her prosthetic hand before leaning back towards her seat.

Ruby turned to Zwei who looked at Jaune oddly. "Say hi to Jaune Zwei." Zwei latched himself to Ruby's leg and shot a glare at Jaune.

"Hello." He said quietly, clutching her tightly which caused Ruby and Yang to till her head at their baby brother's odd behavior. But a knowing look came across Jaune's face Immediately. But he said nothing for the moment. Taiyang claps his hand to get everyone attention.

"I'm sure you guys are hungry so let's eat!"

A knowing look also appeared on Jaune's face as he sat in the audience. While he may not be… dating his best friend in this world, he recognized all to well the signs of a threatened sibling. He himself had acted the same way when he himself was around Faunus Zwei's age. While he may not know exactly what the young boys feelings were, Jaune knew where they were coming from.

Zwei had sat close to Ruby the entire time and tried to keep her attention on him and not Jaune. After the dinner when Jaune stood, Zwei smiled brightly.

"Leaving already? Oh noooo" He said faking sadness. I guess you're going home now….."

Many in the audience soon were beginning to now understand what exactly was going on now.

"Aww~ Looks like the little brother is threatened by Jaune-Jaune over here." Nora nodged her fearless leader.

"Nora, please…" Jaune practicality begged his energetic teammates/surrogate sister.

Ruby giggles and pats Zwei's head.

"No silly. Jaune's gonna be staying with us for the next months before we hit the road again!'

Zwei's eyes widen and he tears up

"Oh no, poor baby." Weiss almost wept at the broken-hearted expression on the poor boy's face. Many of the other members of the audience also felt sympathetic.

"You're leaving? But you just got back!" he whimpered. Yang sighed a bit.

"No Zwei. We're leaving in a month." She replied, still finishing off her steak and turning to look at Tai. "This really good dad." Taiyang thanks her while Zwei glares at Jaune.

"But why is he staying here?"

Ruby tilts her head. "Cause he's got nowhere else to go?"

"Why doesn't he go home?"

"He lives in Mistral Zwei. It's pretty far and it's easier for him to stay here."

Zwei growled and crossed his arms and turned away from them. "I'm not sharing my room with him." He says looking at the floor. Ruby laughs a little.

"Course not. He's sleeping in my room." Taiyang raises a finger to complain but Yang stops him and shakes her head with a look that says "Don't even bother." To which Tai reluctantly complies with. Ruby could be really stubborn.

"Wow, your Dad is not how I was expecting him to be," Blake states.

"Yeah Dad doesn't get angry as much as Yang does." Ruby replies.

"Yeah...Hey wait a minute!" Yang's eyes narrowed.

The members of RWB(Y) and ALPN laughed at her expense. Yang sighed.

"Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up."

"Fine." Zwei begans to stomp up upstairs into his room and slams it shut. Ruby looked a bit annoyed and worried.

"What's his problem?" Ruby asks turning the others? Yang and Taiyang shrugged and Jaune remained silent. They all talk for a while before heading to bed.

The next day had come and Jaune had gotten up and ate breakfast with the family. Zwei never looked at him and ran up into his room when he was done. Ruby taps him on the shoulder.

"Maybe try playing with him? He just met you and I'm sure he's just being shy." Ruby said smiling. Jaune sighed a bit.

Jaune shook his head at what Ruby's alternate self was presuming to be the issue at hand.

"It's not that he's shy. He thinks I'm gonna steal you away." He thought to himself. But he nodded and started to walk up to Zwei's room knocking before walking in. the ten year old faunus glaring at him immediately.

"What?" He said quite rudely.

"Whoa shit. He may look like Red but he certainly doesn't act like her." Mercury said honestly surprised.

"Be quiet Black! Zwei is a good boy and he shall remain that way!" Weiss threw this way.

The villains in the room only rolled their eyes at the former heiress's retort.

Jaune looked around the room and saw it was a Ten year boy's dream. Poster of plenty of shows, A xbox and a ps4 the works. He looks at Zwei to see a bunch of toys around him and he walks up and picks up a toy that looks like a ghost kneeing to Zwei's eye level and smiles at him.

"Hey I was hoping I could play with you, maybe I can be… Ghostface? Zwei looked at Jaune like he was stupid.

"His name is Ghostfreak." Zwei states turning his gaze from Jaune to play with his other toys. "And I ain't playing with him. I'm not crossovering over Ben 10 with Transformers."

"Hey Merc, wake me whenever this snooze fest is over. I'm gonna take a nap." Emerald whispers to Mercury.

"No promises."

"Well why not?"

"Because they don't take place in the universe."

"Well maybe ghost freak can use is ghostfreak can use his powers to end up in the Transformers Universe with Optuis prines." Jaune had clearly said the worst thing possible because Zwei's face went red and he started screaming at him.

"IT'S OPTIMUS PRIME AND GHOSTFREAK POWERS DON'T WORK LIKE THAT! GET OUT! GET OUT OFF MY ROOM!" Jaune hopped up and speed walk out Zwei's room into Ruby, looking a bit assumed.

"Didn't go well? Ah wait don't tell me… you say Optimus Prime name wrong."

Jaune glares at his girlfriend as she laughs at him.

"You knew that was gonna happen."

Ruby stops laughing to give Jaune a smirk.

"I didn't. But it was still funny."

"Well… that went as well as I expected." Jaune stated.

so, ever since qrow’s semblance was revealed, I've been dying for some more spooky or detrimental semblances, and i had an idea for oscar’s. Since one of his core themes in v7 was conquering fear, i thought it would be rather ironic for him to have a semblance that directly causes it, because i like to hurt characters i like.

some other additional points I didn’t mention

-a small aesthetic thing, but when he’s not using it, his shadow can often look abnormally long and wispy.

-small outbursts of his semblance can often crack fragile things, such as glass.

-it’s directly tied to his emotions, so he doesn’t have great control over it.

-when he first discovered it, he opted not to tell the rest of the team, it freaked him out so much.

-the black thing is nicknamed ‘ozpin junior’ much to oz’s chagrin.

Pyrrha and Penny switch roles; Penny is set to be the Fall Maiden before getting killed, and Pyrrha becomes the Hero of Mantle.

Penny rushed to the CCT Tower at Beacon as grimm and Atlas robots alike started to attack the school. Between her fight with Pyrrha and the grimm attacks right after everyone had started to panic, everything had changed too quickly. She never meant for Pyrrha to get hurt, never meant to cause a panic for those who were watching the tournament, and that woman who spoke and made sure everyone saw Penny and the blood on her swords…

“Penny, where are you going?!” Ruby used her semblance to get ahead of Penny. “We need to help everyone get out of here-”

“I… I cannot, I need…” Penny sighed and pointed to the tower where Ozpin and Glynda already stood waiting for her. “I need to get to the tower. I cannot explain everything but… this is my purpose. This was the reason I was built, I am sure of it.”

Ruby nodded and smiled at her friend. “Then I’ll come with you to make sure you stay safe.”

Penny smiled and continued to rush to the tower, her blades made short work of the grimm and robots that stood in her way. All she had to do was get the maiden powers and she could save Beacon and- she paused as a new grimm appeared on her scans. The ground rumbled as a deafening roar thundered in the air as the wyvern grimm flew through the air above Vale, grimm goo dripped from its wings and body. Penny could only stand in fear as she watched the monstrosity fly above and make its way to the tower.

Ruby pulled out her scythe and slammed the blade into the nearest grimm and called out to Penny. “Go! I’ll make sure the grimm dont make it!”

“But Ruby-”

“I’ll be right behind you!”

Penny let out a small sigh as she watched Ruby practically dance with her scythe in hand. Even with her experience, the grimm numbers still seemed to infinitely grow. Penny shook her head and rushed to the tower and followed behind the headmaster.

“We’ll need to hurry,” Ozpin said as he opened the elevator and pressed a button for the loweset, basement floor. “Are you sure you’re ready Penny?”

“I… I am combat ready…”

Ozpin nodded and took a few breaths as the elevator lowered itself well below the school. Once the doors opened, he rushed to the end of the hallway to make sure the aura transfer machine was ready. “This… will still hurt.”

Penny nodded and sat down into the open chamber. She took a breath as the chamber closed and the machine started to run. Her body burned as she felt her aura start to mix with Amber’s as the machine ran its course. Then… the burning stopped.

The transfer began to fail as an arrow pierced Amber’s heart. The aura that had started to mix with Penny separated from her and made its way to the other half. Penny pounded on the glass to let her out as she watched the maiden powers swirl around Cinder. “No!”

Ozpin finally managed to get the pod open and sighed as he readied himself. “Penny, its time for you to go.”

“But I can-”

“You’ll only be in the way.”

Glynda put a hand on Penny’s shoulder and motioned to the door. “This isnt the place for either of us. Professor Ozpin will hold Cinder off and we’ll make sure everyone else gets out of Beacon.”

Penny wanted to argue, but the words were stuck in the back of her throat. She wanted to stay to help, but she knew Ozpin was right: even if this was what she was built for, she hadnt been tested to deal with a maiden. At least, not yet. With a quiet sigh, she ran off with Glynda past Cinder. She fought every urge to turn around to fight as she made her way out of the tower.

Glynda panted behind her. “We need to evacuate everyone-” Her words were interrupted as the elevator behind them was destroyed as Cinder made her way up the shaft to the top of the tower. Pieces of metal started to fall around as she used her semblance to protect herself and Penny. “You need to leave-”

“No, I will not let Beacon fall!” Penny glared as she targeted Cinder and used the small rockets in her boots to gain a bit of height and latch her swords into the tower. Each sword was used for precise leverage to make her way to the top of the tower. Glass exploded around Penny near the top of the tower as Cinder blasted out the windows and made her way to the grimm wyvern that flew around the top of the tower. With one last heave, she pulled herself into what remained of Ozpin’s office and glared at Cinder. “Stand down.”

Cinder smirked and turned around, bow in hand as her eyes glowed with the maiden powers. “Do you believe in destiny?”

*months later*

Pyrrha took a deep breath and took a few steps forward, arms outstretched to help keep her balance. With each step, she could feel her balance shift, still unused to her new legs.

“That’s it, just a little further,” Peitro said as he made a few notes on his scroll. “You’re doing well with your recovery.”

“It still feels surreal to be able to walk again,” Pyrrha quickly regained her balance as she started to wobble. “You really think I’ll be ready to train again?”

“You’ll be ready in no time.” Pietro coughed and moved his chair to Pyrrha’s side. “Now please sit down so I can run a few diagnostics on your new body.”

Pyrrha sighed and sat down, her eyes moved to a picture of Pietro and his daughter. “You know she didnt mean to hurt me, right?”

“I know, but that doesnt change how the rest of Atlas… how the rest of the world saw it. To them, they saw Penny try to kill you and we were lucky to get you out of there when we could. The fact you’re still here is a miracle in of itself.”

Pyrrha slowly nodded and leaned back as Pietro opened the panel on her chest. “Any idea what happened to her?”

“Not yet, but as soon as I’m able to rebuild her, I should be able to get access to her core and see exactly what she saw. Though, from the looks of the damage, it wasnt a grimm.”

“So… now what’s going to happen?”

“What’s going to happen is that we’re going to come up with a new plan to save Remnant,” General Ironwood said as he stepped into PIetro’s office. “Miss Nikos, its good to see that you’re still alive.”

“Oh, right, I never did introduce you… this is General Ironwood.” Pietro moved a bit for Pyrrha to see the General at the doorway. “He uh… he’s the reason you’re still with us today. As soon as he saw what happened to you, he made sure we could get you here to Atlas to save your life. Though… we did have to make a few changes as you’re aware.”

“I know, and thank you, general.” Pyrrha moved her flesh and blood arm to the mechanical one she had and gently gripped it. “Though, I’m still not sure why you’d want to spend so much time on me.”

Ironwood slowly made his way to Pyrrha. “Now that Beacon has been destroyed and with Ozpin presumed dead, I think its time I start to be a bit more… open about what’s going on. Namely about why Beacon was attacked.”

“I’m… I’m not sure I understand…”

Ironwood nodded and sat down next to Pyrrha and waited for Pietro to close the door before he continued. “The attack on Beacon wasnt an accident. Cinder… works for someone who can control the grimm and is actively seeking to destroy Remnant. Beacon was just the first to come and if we’re going to stand a chance, then Atlas needs to be ready.”

Pyrrha slowly nodded and looked herself over. “I’m… flattered that you want me but I… I’m not sure I’m ready for anything like that.”

“We’ll work you up to it. In the meantime, we need someone that can be a beacon of hope in place of Penny’s absence. A way to show that while things are looking like the world is ending, that there is someone who can help defend.”

“And… what exactly did you have in mind?”

Pietro smiled and showed his scroll to Pyrrha. “With your permission, I have a few thoughts to help you navigate the battlefield to fight grimm.

Pyrrha smiled a bit as she saw a picture of herself with angel-like wings on her back, a circlet around her forehead similar to the one she lost, and armor in red and green that made her look like a hero from one of the comics she used to read as a child. “And what exactly would I be?”

“For now, the protector of Mantle,” Ironwood answered. “And once we’re finished with your training, I hope that you’ll take your place as the protector of Remnant.”

Redemption and Responsibility

When I was going through Tumblr earlier I came across some posts about “Adam stans” who were insisting Adam should have been redeemed and I started to think. There is a specific reason why these folk want Adam redeemed and it isn’t quite what you think. It hearkens back to Christianity and the concept of Forgiveness and Redemption... in that you can be the most horrific and terrible person in the world, but if you find Christ in your heart just before the end you will go to Heaven.

Redemption became a Get Out of Hell card and people throughout history have a tendency to try and “buy” their way out of their actions. Martin Luther protested the practice of Indulgences or basically bribing your way out of your sins. Nobles often would use their money and power to get away with mistreating those of lower station because they could and just get forgiven by the King or Queen because they were valuable in some way.

This trend even continued into entertainment (though interestingly, while Lord of the Rings did have Boromir redeem himself it was through his actions... but Saruman ended up not redeemed despite his station and being a Maiar) and rose to prominence with Darth Vader who in the movies did not show any signs of deserving redemption but just because he chose to save his son’s life and toss the Emperor over a railing, he got a Happily Ever After as a Light Side Force Ghost.

These days you see a lot of folk insisting that Kylo Ren needs to be redeemed and that he is poorly written because he’s digging himself deeper into a pit... or that Adam Taurus was poorly written because he should have been redeemed. Some misogynists even claim that Rooster Teeth is bowing to LGBT+ pressure and forcing Blake to be bisexual and with Yang and thus killed off Adam rather than be redeemed.

But do either character deserve redemption? No. They have not taken responsibility for their actions. Kylo Ren screwed things up for his Master, he paraded around trying to be like Darth Vader rather than doing the job he was told to do, and then threw a hissy fit and murdered his Master because he’d been manipulated and used. (Mind you, his Master deserved to die.) But his actions were purely for his own benefit and his own power. He blames others for his own shortfallings and doesn’t show regret - or at the very least he tries his best to smother any regrets he does have. He isn’t accepting responsibility, he is only trying to seize power.

Likewise with Adam Taurus... Adam has shown no remorse for his actions. I’m not even talking about his murder of humans, some of whom likely were no threat to him and wouldn’t have raised a hand against him. He murdered other Faunus, including in the White Fang, for daring to speak up against him. He then went on to stalk Blake across Anima and attack her... and was offered several times the chance to walk away. He refused.

Adam never bore responsibility for his actions. He never showed remorse or regret for what he did. He blamed others instead. In no way has he shown he wanted or should have a redemption arc. Hell, the only way you could do a redemption arc for Adam is for Adam to forget who he was and become a blank slate... at which point he’s not Adam Taurus any longer. (Yes, I’ve had a friend joke that Adam would return with amnesia and try to make up for his past actions, though not because he likes Adam but rather he likes creating stories in his head and seeing where they can go.)

There are characters who may very well go through Redemption Arcs. Qrow Branwen may be such a character and it’s likely Ozma/Ozpin himself may do this as well. We may also see Emerald and/or Mercury (and possibly Hazel) end up walking that path as well. (Neo? Not so much. I truly believe Neo is going to stab Cinder in the back but it’s for her own selfish reasons in seeking revenge rather than to make up for her past actions. I say this as someone who loves Neo dearly... but that girl’s going to end up dead at the end.) But Adam? Adam never did anything to even hint at redemption. He never took responsibility for his actions. He did not deserve a redemption arc. Not everyone does.
