Birds cawed and chirped as a fanfare blasted through the air. From a trumpet. Only blocking some portion of chatter as a crowd filled the woods.
Different cabins aligned across from each other, where a wide lake stretched out ahead of them.
Summer camp. A place of how children could join and spend their summer in the wilderness. Whether they did it because they wanted to or not was out of the question.
Bucky breathed in the air, stretching his arms. Flexing the bicep of his prosthesis, pleased at the tiny clink while moving it.
This year had to be. . . Had to be something he hadn't expected. Mostly, because his boss, Nick Fury, assigned him to Brighton cabin. And with someone, who hadn't thought he would get a chance to work with.
On paper, someone like Sam probably wouldn't be so popular. However, he had proven himself to be delightful to be around. Even if Bucky's stomach was in knots of working alongside him. As a partner, co-worker sort of thing.
At first, he had been worked up. Cue him freaking out in the bathroom, trying to get his crap together. Wondering of what to do, what to say, and how to be calm. But then, he had formed a plan or two. It may or may not involve making a move on one Samuel Wilson. A.k.a the camp counselor that Bucky had to be paired off with the entire summer.
This was his third year as camp counselor at Camp Shield. He signed up for it two years ago with Natasha Romanov. He signed up because he wanted to invest in something worth doing. After his time in the army, he couldn't think of anything better than it.
It didn't hurt that he met someone as fun and considerate as Sam. Someone who managed taking Bucky as it and having a blast with him.
Including this meeting with the campers, who they were assigned to look after.
Being forced to be near his crush would do a severe number on him. However, he couldn't complain of having more of his company.
Sam definitely had a good effect on people. With his friendly presence and bright demeanor.
"Good morning, campers," Sam called, his expression bright with a grin.
All of the campers applauded and cheered, brimming with excitement. Bucky couldn't help the smile stretching his lips.
Yeah, he thought, most likely grinning like an idiot. He would so be more than happy to be near Sam for the entire summer. . .
"Who's looking forward for this summer, huh?" Bucky asked.
"'Cause we got tons of activities lined up!" Sam clapped, swinging an arm around Bucky's shoulder. "Get ready!
"Me, me, me!" the kids answered in a yelling sort of chorus, raising their hands.
The campers started cracking up into laughter while exchanging hushed conversations. Probably speculating on what Sam got planned.
Maybe ranging from woodshops to a scavenger hunt to campfires. Bucky had been curious on what Sam had for the scavenger hunt. Because he had made the best ones before even Bucky joined Camp Shield. Other camp counselors often talked about how he pulled it off and what-not.
And fairly, when Bucky worked for another cabin with another counselor, he had been damn impressed. At witnessing how these kids got to enjoy it with his help.
Now working closely would give him an insight on what it would be like. Collaborating together and all.

"As I was sayin'," Sam said, startling Bucky out of his revere. "I hope you guys will . If ya got questions, feel free to ask."
Bucky fidgeted with the sweatband around his wrist as a girl tossed a hand up.
"Counselor Wilson," the girl called meekly.
"Yes?" Sam approached her, his brows raised. "What is it?"
"Are we gonna go birdwatching?" the girl asked, lowering her head. "Just wanna know."
"Yeah, cause we liked seeing those birds!" another camper piped up. "It was totally amazing! I wanna see them again!"
"Of course." Sam nodded. He smiled in a way that revealed his small tooth gap. "There are cool spots that I wanna show new campers. If you guys are all in, that is."
The campers cheered and hollered, jumping out of their seats.
For the rest of the day, Sam and Bucky introduced them to some basic things. As a refresher for those returning campers and a guide for those new ones.
Well, time to make a move then. Or else, he would regret it later on. He had a plan for a personal purpose and would do it.
If there was a thing Bucky had, it would be guts and determination.
"Hey, Sam," Bucky said after his sprint towards him. "Can I have a moment with ya?"
Sam skidded to a halt, turning to look at him.
"Sure," Sam murmured. "What can I do for ya, dude?"
"Is it alright if we can exchange digits?" Bucky asked, trying to sound casual. And probably failing. "I mean. . . I kinda regret not doing this sooner. Look, I know you'd be busy later. . . And it'd be great if
Sam blinked, his cheeks darkening. "Oh. You. . . hang on, I. . . you've been waiting to ask me?"
"Yeah. Look, maybe the timing isn't the best. . . But I'm willing to wait. I mean we got things to do here at Camp Shield, after all."
"Sure, sure! Yeah, that'd totally. . . That'd be awesome!"
Sam chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck.
Bucky's heart fluttered at the sight. He grinned.
For all his smooth charm, Bucky didn't imagined at how surprised he would be. Sam might be used to initiating instead of someone making the first move.
Hmm. . . How adorable.
"Well, in the meantime," Bucky said, brushing a hand along Sam's elbow. "I'm glad I got you as my co-counselor."
Sam gave a small smile. "Same here. Can't wait for this summer to keep on rollin'."
