Pack dynamics for domestic urban fantasy werewolves:
● They're never exclusively werewolves. Werewolves have a habit of aggressively adopting everyone they are fond of and when you've won the trust and affection of one, the rest come along in a package deal.
● They're territorial in the protective sense. No trouble in our neighborhood. No hunger in our houses. No fear on our streets.
● They hold grudges. Shopkeeper overcharged one of the pack members in their store? None of them will shop there again. Restaurant owner yelled at one the cubs who got a job there washing up? They've just lost all their hungriest diners.
● Young werewolves think the word "pack" is way too old fashioned and prefer words like crowd, crew, fam, and swarm. ("Honestly, honey, swarm? What are we, pigeons?")
● They're nosy. The upside is no one with a werewolf pack to back them up will ever be left to fend for themselves. The downside is that everyone is always sticking their hairy noses in.
● They vary greatly in size. In some places, especially more rural ones, it's not uncommon to find entire villages that are basically one pack. In other places they might only have a dozen members, scattered about. And many packs start with a set of two or three going somewhere new to build a life and a community.

Trying to include a werewolf in your story often causes an expectation they will transform for your audience. You have a lot of options for this, but once you've committed to one it's said something about the nature of a werewolf.
Painful transformations can make us feel horrified while watching it, and hope we never endure that kind of agony (AAWIL);
A swift and controlled change can emphasize the power a werewolf has, making this curse more aspiration (Underworld);
Instances where the transformation is very gradual over days leading up to the moon can be fairly tragic due to the loss of autonomy these characters experience (Silver Bullet).
It can be tempting to commit to an aesthetic, however it's essential to ensure the themes of your werewolf story match it. A werewolf who transforms relatively quickly and painlessly isn't going to mesh with a horrific and tragic narrative. They can still work. For instance, the emphasis on how easy it is to let go of their humanity, to indulge, how hard it is to keep the beast at bay. These are themes you can explore in a quick transformation. Perhaps, full moon changes are slow and painful because the human side is fighting their beast trying to tire it out before it gains control. In that we see a more heroic element to the lycanthrope.
Please reblog with your favourite werewolf transformations! Pretty sure my fav. is from Hemlock Grove, just so visceral!

Our first official original TTRPG, Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is planned for kickstarter launch late 2023/early 2024!
Tumblr media
Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is an original, fully fledged, 200-page 2d6 TTRPG from The Agency of Narrative Intrigue and Mystery inspired by The X-Files, Kolchak: The Nightstalker, and much more!
Eureka features investigation mechanics that let players take initiative, use their characters’ unique strengths to find clues, and deduce conclusions themselves rather than to just walking into a room and roll Investigate.
Failed Rolls are not the End!
The Eureka! mechanic accumulates points throughout the adventure that can be used to help prevent investigators from getting totally stuck, but also a reward investigators for solving the mystery without ever getting stumped, because these points can be saved for life-or-death situations instead!
Tactical Combat!
High-stakes realistic combat can end lives in seconds through deep strategy that encourages careful thinking and allows for complex maneuvers. Thoughtful positioning, understanding of one’s surroundings, and having the right weapon for the job play as much of a role in victory as a character’s stats, if not more, which is good, because most of these PCs will not be larger-than-life action heroes!
Roleplay-driven Mechanics, and Mechanic-driven Roleplay!
Player characters’ personalities and ideals determine many of their gameplay mechanics, giving each character a totally unique way to play through Eureka! This won’t get confusing though, as all of these different mechanics use the same underlying systems that are easy to understand! Changing characters won’t require you to completely relearn the game!
Man-eating Monsters Hiding in Plain Sight!
As investigators face off against metaphorical (or sometimes literal) monsters, the rare investigator may literally be a monster themselves, and keeping it secret from the other players while having to sate their sinister hunger is a game of intrigue all its own.
Extreme Versatility!
Eureka is designed to be able to run (just about) any adventure module set between about 1850 and the present day with hardly any adjustments to either the system or the module, no matter what system that module was originally made for! Investigation, action, survival-horror, you name it, Eureka can run it!
Tumblr media
Player-driven investigation, a rewarding system for solving mysteries themselves, realistic high-stakes combat, gameplay determined by roleplay, and inter-party deception are all features you can look forward to in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy.
Launch is still a ways off, but it doesn’t hurt to get the word out early!
Follow this blog to stay up to date on our launch preparations!

What if werewolves sounded like huskies arguing in their transformed form?
Werewolf: *UNGODLY WAILING*
Roommate: “NO. YOU ALREADY ATE YOUR SNACKS. YOU ARE NOT EATING A WHOLE BLOCK OF CHEESE!!”
Werewolf: *MORE UNGODLY WAILING AND HOWLING*
Roommate: “YOU’RE LACTOSE INTOLERANT JERRY!”

There are a lot of words that could be used to describe Theo’s job (and he certainly uses them). ‘Boring’ is not one such word.

I don't generally like to revisit ideas I post, but I'm still thinking about the werewolf thing from the other day. Initially agreeing with your partner that you'll lock her up in the cellar during the full moon, for both of your protection. But when the transformation starts, and the haunting moaning-howling-begging starts wafting up the steps, your heart starts to ache for your lover in chains, and you can't stop yourself from removing the padlock on the door. They bound out, hundreds of pounds of fur and lean muscle, landing on you -- you know you will die at the hand of the only one you love -- but even in their frenzied, monstrous state, they can't bring themselves to hurt you. They bound away into the forest, leaving you alone. Tomorrow, around the breakfast table, both of you will think about it, and neither of you will bring it up.

More urban fantasy werewolf stuff:
● Apps like period trackers but for the different phases of the moon and how they affect mood, appetite, hair growth etc. The app can give a little warning beforehand, making the abrupt hunger and mood swings a little less sudden.
● Older werewolves often have a wrist watches (or even pocket watch) with a moon dial showing the moon waxing and waning as well as the time. It used to be a very popular gift in the community, either from parents to grown up children, or between lovers. They are still passed down like heirlooms.
● Full moon kits - usually in bags or small suitcases for convenience - with spare clothes, extra food, and whatever can make the transformation more comfortable: pain killers, heating pads, chew toys, etc.
● Clothes fastened with magnets instead of buttons, snaps or zippers, so they are less likely to tear during unexpected transformations and are easier to take off or put on with clawed hands.
