Another busy study day in SK. Got in another five study chapters and took the scenic route to a new favourite café! Also almost finished another physical read but got horrendously distracted by my criminal minds rewatch...

Look, I knew five languages by age 19 and now I am learning like 3 more. I work as a language instructor and a consultant. If I can give language learners only one advice, this is it.
STOP LEARNING WORDS ON THEIR OWN.
You're doing yourself a disservice by learning lists of "30 words you must know!" "100 most common words!" like it literally means nothing if you cannot use those words in an appropriate context with proper grammar. So what you actually need to do is learn those words via example sentences.
Of course, sentences have more words so you may think you're learning less but you're actually learning the way to use it in context. That's what's important.
Language is about communication, which also means if you want to learn languages, you have to observe how people communicate with each other universally. Native speakers never have a list of words they know and they don't count every single new word they've learned. So why are you doing it to yourself? What native speakers do is listen to the new word, remember the context they're spoken in, and keep using that word in that context. And that's why people go "wait, you can use that word LIKE THAT?" all the time. So you, a language learner, are also allowed to do that. I'm not even saying those word lists are useless but they're the most useful AFTER you've known most of them and are trying to go over them for practice etc. Native speakers do click on those word lists to check out how many words they don't know or to remind themselves of those words or to learn some facts about each word. That should be your goal as well.
Learn sentences. Learn them in context. Do not fall into the "I must know xx amount of words or I'm a failure at language learning" trap perpetuated by bloggers or youtubers or whatever. Have fun with it!

learning languages study guide
daily: ♡ vocabulary and grammar practice ♡ lessons (i have four lessons per week at school. if you don't already take lessons, look into free language courses on alison, coursera or 101 languages)
once per week: ♡ translate a short text (i like to translate my journal entries)
one per fortnight/month: ♡ watch a movie in your target language, preferably animated movies as the language used is easier. you can watch with subtitles

난 피곤해 와 답답해 하지만 이유는 진짜 몰라요. 내 에너지 그냥 갑자기 없어 그리고 한 것 안 싶어요. 난 계속 생각해, "그냥 시작해야" 근데 오늘 난 이미 다시 많이 여러 번 시작해. (i'm tired and frustrated, but i don't really know why. my energy has just run out and i don't want to do anything. i kept thinking "i just need to start," but i've restarted so many times already today.)
🥰🥰🥰 physiotherapy exercises + warmup + running — i was supposed to do arms and abs today but i've eaten more than usual as one does on days off, so i feel like i need to do cardio 😅

The only reason I make silly comics as digital art is honestly cntrl+c/+v. So damn nifty for a slowpoke like me. :P

🧋06.25.23 🧋
Finally got back to my favourite local café for some studying! I've had tonsillitis for the past week so I've just been comfort (/low-key hate) reading Julia Quinn books since last sunday.
Finished up some practice questions, caught up on my daily vocab in one of my books (still haven't started making the flashcards I specifically bought for this month though rip ㅠㅠ).
Today's audiobook read was Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey and I had some fun with it! It was super short which I'm not complaining about and it was a really good introduction to the future western genre! A pretty solid read overall, and I'm interested in picking up more from Gailey in the future!
I also started a new physical read with Wonderworks by Angus Fletcher, and now I want to reread the Iliad lmao.

I don't talk a lot about Burmese language, huh? I just realized that some Burmese insults are so good they're insta-kill one liners. (I mean those which aren't racist/sexist etc of course because insults can be like that in ANY language)
Anyway, here's a few insults I enjoy!
အုတ်ကြားမြက်ပေါက် (Oat kyar myat pout) that translates literally to "grass that grows in between bricks." The meaning is pretty close to a "bastard" because the grass isn't supposed to be there. Idiot grass, trying to grow in the bricks smh.
ဆန်ကုန်မြေလေး (San kone myay lay) the literal translation is "spent rice, heavy ground" but it means "you're a waste of rice and the only thing you've ever done in your life is making the ground heavy" which is so sick 😭
လျှာအရိုးမရှိ (Shar a yoe ma shi) lit. translation being "tongue doesn't have a bone" and it means "you can't keep saying bullshit just because your tongue doesn't have a bone in it!"
Of course, there are MANY others but these are my top three contenders.

september 10, 2023 ⭐︎ 1/100 days of productivity
hello!! today i decided to start the 100 days of productivity challenge! recently, ive been feeling like things are not going as well as they could be, so i think this challenge will be a good way for me to practice discipline.
i got most of the stuff on my to-do list done, such as the notes for my business courses and some japanese studying. i also filmed, edited, and uploaded a youtube video. editing is very therapeutic for me, sometimes i dont have anything to film but just want to be able to sit down and edit. im gonna try to film and upload one more video this week, before my birthday weekend vlog :) if you want to watch the video i uploaded today, click here !!
happy stu(dying)!

How I Annotate Non-Fiction Books:
Step one gathering supplies. The supplies you need will be based on your needs and the text you are annotating so feel free to fit this to your need or habits.
For physical books: highlighters, pens, sticky notes, page flags, index cards, the book/document
For digital books: your device or choice (might do an in depth post of digital texts later)
Tumblr media
step two- creating your key
For small documents, I tend to stick to one color (each of my classes are assigned a single color).
For Longer documents, with lots of information, I will create a key for example:
Tumblr media
keys should be based on what information is most important. In my history classes dates and names are more important whereas in a science class terms and chemical formulas may be most important.
You should also keep in mind why you are reading the book/document. For example: Are you reading to write a book report? Then it would be best to highlight the thesis and any points you wish to bring up in your review.
some parts of your key will most likely not need writing down after they become habit, for example after highlighting an important term, I will underline the definition of the term. (I personally tend to under highlight)
very important highlighted text will also get a page flag so that it is easier to find when reviewing, write a review, etc.
Tumblr media
step three- your first read through
break the reading into smaller segments, for example. if you are reading a textbook or information-dense book you may wish to use headings or subheadings as your guide for this. if your text is not already broken into smaller section resign yourself to summarizing after every few paragraphs
You can write your summaries in whatever way suits you, your habits, or the book you are working with.
Tumblr media
For this book I am writing my summaries in index cards, but I could have written them in sticky notes, or in a notebook (physical or digital.) I have tried all of these techniques and I like them all and tend to switch between them.
Tumblr media
On the back of my summary cards, I write the page numbers the information was pulled from so that I can more quickly find the information if I need to quote it.
Feel free to ask questions in the replies or in my asks!

🩰 that girl diaries // smart girl spring 🌸
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have commitment issues and i can't tell if it's because of apathy (and trying not to feel that way anymore) or because i genuinely get excited about EVERYTHING 🙃 either way, if i have too many goals and not enough time, am i even working towards goals anymore or am i just kind of ~doing things~? 😅
🩰 randomly starting ballet basics??
🤘 my quest to learn ASL continues~
👩‍💻 AI workshop (for work)
📚 read a chapter of Everyone in My Family has Killed Someone
🇨🇳🇯🇵 Chinese and Japanese lessons
📚 read a chapter of Sophie's World
📚 read a chapter of Maisie Dobbs: An Incomplete Revenge
✏️🇯🇵 N5 writing practice (3 sentences 💀)
✏️🇨🇳 HSK1 writing practice (cont'd)
🇰🇷 Korean lesson
💌: does anyone remember what their goals for this year were? 😂 i'm just kind of going in the intended general direction now, but i like the flexibility and sense of greater possibility — who knows what might strike my fancy next? ☺️💕
