Julieta set a careful hand on his arm, then eased his hands away from the counter and into her own when he didn’t pull away. In his peripheral vision, she glanced at Pepa, who smelled of ozone and continued to flash and rumble. “She had a lot of responsibilities,” Julieta said, slowly. “And we wanted to make her proud.”

“Well,” Bruno said, avoiding eye contact “I’m the- mystery guy that Mirabel thinks left Encanto and who her favorite hermana likes, not- someone she wants to make proud. So she asked me what it’s like, you know, outside. Because she doesn’t have a room, and she can’t stay in the nursery forever.”

Uranus was near howling in laughter as Neptune held Antonio and Pluto was protectively hovering beside Mirabel. Saturn was looking so done with everything as the four Outers looked at the Madrigals.

"Do you really think you can intimidate us?" Neptune asked bemused as she stared at the Madrigals. Most of them were nodding except Dolores and Camilo. Dolores was looking at her family as if they were nuts and Camilo was staring at Saturn.

"Well I just wanted to ask the beautiful one out on a date." Camilo said blushing and looking hopefully at Saturn who looked at Mirabel immediately.

"Your cousin is trying to date you princess?" Saturn asked in alarm and Mirabel looked disgusted but amused.

"He meant you silly." Mirabel said and Saturn looked baffled.

"But you Michiru-mama and Setsuna-mama are the beautiful ones." Saturn looked so innocently confused and Mirabel sighed as she looked at her crush. (Didn't Chibi-Usa have a crush on Saturn? If not someone please correct me)

"You're adorable when confused but trust me you're beautiful too." Mirabel said and Saturn blushed at that, looking down and awkwardly fiddling with her skirt.

"Enough. You will release my grandchildren immediately and leave!" Alma demanded glaring at the senshi while Antonio looked around and then lightly hugged on Neptune's outfit.

"Yes little prince?" Neptune immediately gave him her full attention.

"Why is she saying you've got her grandkids? The only ones you've got are Mira and I." Antonio asked confused and Alma...she paused for a long moment at that.

"Ignore her little prince. She must be going senile." Uranus said grinning and Mirabel snickered.

"You remember that all of us bar the Prince are older than she is right papa?" Saturn asked dryly as she stared at her papa.

"Meh schematics." Uranus shrugged.

"I demand you-" Alma was cut off by Saturns glaive now being pointed at her throat.

"The only one who can give us orders is our queen. And our current orders are to get the Prince and Princess to the palace. I do not defy my queen." Saturn said her voice cold as she glared down the taller woman with ease.

"Oh please let them be stupid enough to attack us. I've been itching to hit them with a World Shaking for years." Uranus said and she was holding her sword at the ready now with a feral grin on her face.

"Don't waste your time and energy." Pluto said shaking her head as she turned to go, gently guiding Mirabel with her.

"They aren't worth it." Neptune agreed as she carried Antonio away.

"Hmph. If they try something I'm not holding back. Let's go Firefly." Uranus said as she followed the other two, although she was still on alert for any back attacks.

Saturn paused for a moment and stared at them all.

"I suggest you leave them alone before the Queen gets so tired of your behavior that the prince and princess can no longer save you. While Neptune-mama and Uranus-papa are powerful and protective...it's me and Pluto-mama you need to be worried about. After all she's the Guardian of time and space." Saturn said and she moved her glaive and started to follow her parents and Prince and Princess.

"What are you guardian of? You're like my age!" Camilo asked and Saturn chuckled darkly, shooting them a twisted little smirk.

"I am much older than I look. And I am the Guardian of Death."

NO ITS FINE 🤭🤭 no but what did they think would happen. Like I feel like they didn’t think this one through??? It’s cool though, cause they handled it. Most definitely not worth it, trust 💀💀

“Camilo, stand straight,”

“Ay,” Camilo groaned, but did as told. “I’m standing straight.”

“Five years. For five years I’ve been telling you this,” Y/N said, putting up five fingers. He looked at her palm, nodding.

She didn’t know what to expect, but what he did next was not it. Camilo placed his own palm against hers and interlocked their fingers. Bringing their joined hands higher, he placed a tender kiss on the back of her palm. She bit the inside of her cheek at this action. If there was one thing to always expect from Camilo, it was him being unexpectedly cute.

“Dork,” she muttered, untangling her fingers from his grasp.

She placed her elbow back on her knee and rested her chin on her palm. Staring ahead, she tapped her fingers against her cheeks. 

Camilo stood beside her, not feeling like joining his girlfriend on the stone wall. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” she responded, but her eyes remained on the setting sun. Like she wasn’t exactly listening. Camilo’s eyebrows scrunched. Turning his whole body towards her, he took a step forward. Now vis-a-vis and blocking the view, Y/N had to look up at him. 

“Mi vida, you’re spacing out,” he deadpanned.

“I’m just taking in the view,”

“This isn’t the first time,” 

Y/N straightened. Her hands fell down onto her lap, her torso was now perpendicular to the ground. That way, they could see eye to eye. But did they?

“I’m fine, Camilo,” she said.

“I hope so,” he sighed. “Because if you weren’t that would mean you’re not telling me something I should know.”

She tensed at the seriousness that overcame both his features and voice. This was the less common side of Camilo Madrigal. The one he reserved for scolding his loved ones for not taking care of themselves. Serious Camilo was someone she got to meet a lot these past few months, actually.

Instead of responding, she reached down and gently took his wrist. Sliding her hand into his own, she brought it up. She placed it on her lap. With a sigh and a nod, she started playing with his palm, his fingers. Caressing his smooth skin, delicately touching his rough from all the work fingertips. She couldn’t help but notice how quickly the tension left him and soon his hand went limp. Free for her to play with.

“You care a lot,” she said quietly. “But you don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine. I’m happy actually.”

By closing his fingers on her own, he stopped her little game. “You are?”

“Very.” she smiled. 

“Mhm,” he hummed, stepping closer and moving to hold her other hand. “Why? What’s causing you to be so happy?”

A soft laugh escaped Y/N’s throat. “I know you know. You just want to hear me say it.”

“Maybe.” he let go of her hands. His own made their way to her waist. His fingers rubbed up and down her sides, dancing across her skin. “Come on, say it.”

“Dios, it’s you.” she rolled her eyes. “There. Ego boosted enough?”

He shook his head, before staring deep into her eyes and placing his forehead against hers. “I’m gonna need a name. Who did you say makes you happy?”

She pressed her lips tightly as a smile spread across her face. “Camilo.” she responded after having a mental debate with herself about whether she should or not.

“Oh? Who’s that? There are a lot of Camilo’s in this world. You’re gonna have to be more specific-“

“Madrigal, jeez. It’s Camilo Madrigal,” she laughed, cutting him off.

“Camilo Madrigal? What about him?” he kissed her cheek.

“You’re insufferable, I can’t believe you,”

“That sounds like a you problem.” he kissed her other cheek. “What about him?” he repeated his question.

“Camilo Madrigal makes me happy,” she gave in.

He pulled away unconvinced. Raising his brow and pursing his lips, he stared at her. Y/N groaned.

“Camilo Madrigal makes me very happy, the happiest actually,”

“And?”

“And I love him very much,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck. She pulled him back to her. “I love him more than anything.”

“That’s my girl,” he whispered before kissing her deeply.

Just as you're about to succumb to the overwhelming despair, a sudden grip on your shoulders jolts you, and you brace for the familiar mockery of a spirit's deception. Instead, a voice cuts through the chaos, clear and unmistakably real. ❝Hey, Y/N. Calm down. Please, calm down. I'm here.❞

Cautiously, you open your eyes, meeting two pools of green filled with worry.

Your heart wants to believe it's truly him, but your mind rebels, scarred by too many deceptions; too many times than you could count, you found yourself in a similar predicament, yet when you allowed yourself to relax, you found that instead of really being someone you cared for, it was just a spirit playing jokes.

Yet, the laughter never comes. Instead, you feel two hands cover the ones you held over your ears.

They were...warm...a sensation both unfamiliar and comforting.

Spirits have never possessed warmth; their touch has always been a cold reminder of their otherness.

Slowly, your breathing steadies under his touch, and you dare to lift your gaze, allowing yourself to truly see him. 

Golden-brown skin that speaks of sun-kissed days.

A wild mane of curls that defied gravity, seemingly untamable, no matter how much it was brushed.

Two gorgeous green eyes that made you feel as if you were lost in a forest of evergreen trees.

And freckles—so many freckles to count—scattered across his nose and cheeks  like stars against the dusk of his skin.

Noticing your attention, Camilo offers a gentle smile. ❝There she is,❞ he whispered, his hands moving from your ears to cradle your face.

❝Y-You're real,❞ you manage, the statement half question, half revelation.

Camilo's smile widens, and he hums in affirmation, his gaze softening as he looks at you. ❝Yeah, Y/N,❞ he gently caressed the side of your face. ❝I'm real.❞

You were blessed with the gift of seeing the undead.

Though seen as evil and devilish by many, the Madrigals showed you the beauty that comes with it and that your gift doesn't define you.

Now, turning 17, you find that your gift continues to grow—from being able to just see the dead, to being able to allow them to communicate with the living through you.

You find yourself drowning under the pressure from both the living and the undead, yet before you can completely hit rock bottom, a certain curly-haired trickster vows to be the one to save you.

Gender in Encanto: a brief non-comprehensive essay

Just cut a line from "light and Shadow" about how gifts are like getting another set of sometimes conflicting gender roles on an unsuspecting 5 year old and Mirabel should consider herself lucky.

Too on the nose but like....

it's true.

Look at Isabela being forced into a gender expression she clearly doesn't want. She wants to be a woman sure but not the woman her grandmother Alma forces her to be.

Look at Pepa having to do constant emotional labor+ or she would cause natural disasters and her husband who has to keep her calm and happy at all times or else

Bruno's gift would fuck up anyone but someone as sweet and shy as him especially and you know Alma pushed him to be bear it silently because he's a Madrigal and a man and men have to push down their negative feelings.

And while Luisa and Camilo are arguably breaking gender roles they are do so in very limited conditional ways and both wear traditional clothes. For example, Camilo can only wear feminine clothes while shapeshifting into women which is some interesting cissexism there. (I'm pretty sure if I was amab my family would the same tho "you can wear a dress but only if it's for a role, god forbid you wear one to school")

however there is an interesting tradition of men following their wives which is apparently normal in colombia and even taking their wives names which I can assure you is NOT normal in Colombia. For example before marrying Julieta Madrigal, Agustin's surname was Rojas. All their daughters are called Rojas-Madrigal. This is highly unusual as the woman's surname comes first and the man's second and is the legal one. Here it's the men marrying into the family.

My partner says because the miracle is transferred by name and not blood. Jared Bush implies this when he says children adopted before age 5 can get gifts. Perhaps Alma worries if her daughters' husbands didn't take the name her grandchildren wouldn't get gifts (oh the horror).

This essay was brought you to by the me reading the Encanto art book at 2 am yesterday and pondering the blurbs on what how the costume designer gave each woman a distinct type of femininity and she's right.... she did.

Most of this is me thinking of my own fanfic, the lore of this is in my AO3 fanfic "to light a candle is to cast a shadow" by Gerrysherry

In Light and darkness AU, that IS how it works with names. When Pedro's sister Beatriz marries and takes on the surname Diaz she stops being a Madrigal. Although the miracle (who is a character in his/its own right) and the family consider her daughter Suzanna family she isn't according to the magic system. Alejandra maintains the Madrigal line by having her husband marry into the family name as well, so Alma didn't start the tradition she revived it.

Also in Light and Shadow half the cast is trans.

Obviously Camilo is, but they're so codedly nonbinary that's a no-brainer. But so is their shadow who was raised as a girl while they were raised a boy. Both and I and Maia Kobabe had a fantasy somewhere out there was a twin raised as the opposite gender we were assigned at birth and together we could be whole and understood. E phrases it much more beautifully than I ever could. Read eir comic Genderqueer for the quote.

Agustin's older sister Stella is trans and she's Camilo mentor (since they're closest in magic system with Bruno out of the picture but yes both are trans). When Camilo's shadow outs them as trans, she is the first to offer reassurance and support. Stella is instrumental in helping most of the characters cis or trans. She lets her brother stay at her house when he needs the quiet after escaping the darkness Of course she lets her family crash at her house when their house falls.

Camilo's shadow is raised a girl and it's unclear if they identified as a girl at first or if that's Shadow Beatriz's (Alma's counterpart) abusive parenting as she seems to hate boys and men (except her own son but he's not human soo....).

There is the mysterious librarian who no one even knows what their agab was as their parents are long dead and their surviving uncle keeps their secret (as all good uncles in this story). They are the first openly nonbinary person in the valley (in this century at least) but not the last (see also Camilo Madrigal).

Then there's Basilio, Mariano's cousin who is also in love with Isabela and a deeply closeted trans woman who has some deep seated worries that her wanting to BE like her crush is wrong and pathological, as my real trans women do. Like Dolores she has resigned herself to let her cousin marry the her crush. Obviously it will work out.

The sad thing is Stella Rojas is RIGHT THERE and Basilio doesn't even know that's an option for her until Camilo and Mirabel introduce the two.

Camilo lies down beside you. “(Y/N), guess what.”

“No.”

Camilo scowls. “Fine. It’s snowing!” His grin pops back on his face.

You scrunch up your nose. “Ew.”

“‘Ew’!?” Camilo looks offended. “What do you mean, ‘ew’?”

“I mean snow is cold, wet, and disgusting, and I’m still tired.” You pull the covers over your head.

“(Y/N/N)!” Camilo whines, pulling them away from you. “Please?” he begs. “I wanna make a snowman!”

You sigh, looking into his puppy-dog eyes. “Fine,” you relent.

“Yay!” Camilo kisses you on the lips.

“But as soon as I say I wanna go in, we go in.”

Camilo nods solemnly, eyes wide. “C’mon, let’s go!” He pulls you out of bed and you stumble behind him as he rushes you into heavy winter clothes and drags you into the snow.

“It’s freezing!” you groan, rubbing your heavily layered arms.

Camilo rolls his eyes. “Oh, come on, we’ve barely even gotten outside. And you have like ten layers on.”

“I’m still cold.” You pout.

Camilo shakes his head with a laugh and grabs your hand. “We’ll make a snowman and then we’ll go inside. Deal?”

“Deal,” you respond glumly. You help him roll up a humongous ball of snow and then another that’s slightly smaller. By the time you’ve made the snowman’s head, you’re actually enjoying your time out in the cold. “I’ll go get a carrot, a hat, a scarf and some buttons!” you call out, running inside and coming back out with said items.

Camilo puts a stick on each side of the snowman’s body and helps you stick the other items into the snow. “All right, I guess we can go inside now,” he says, admiring your work.

Your expression falls. “Aw. I don’t want to anymore.”

Camilo smirks. “Really?” He shapeshifts into you. “Cold is wet and cold and disgusting,” he mimics before turning back into himself.

“I changed my mind!” you protest.

Camilo tsks. “I suppose we could stay out for a little while longer.”

“Yay!” You squeeze him into a hug and he laughs, shaking his head as you throw yourself into the cold white powder.

Maybe snow isn’t so bad after all.

A/n: Eey! I am sorry I missed this!

Camilo loved you, how could he not? You were one of the few people that he did not change for. It was a bonus since you are such an excellent artist. He couldn’t help but feel over the moon whenever you would draw him. Though when you got in your zone he knew that their was nothing he could do.

“Ah y/n…how would you like.” Camilo’s voice trailed off when he spotted you in your usual spot, feverishly going at your sketch pad. Your tongue was sticking out, it was honestly one of the cutest things he was seeing. Shaking his head he sat himself next to you, you barley responded as your eyes glanced up before returning to your sketch pad.

“Are you not going to kiss me?” You asked, your gaze still focused on the flock of birds on the trees off in the distances.

Blinking a few times, Camilo chuckled then he shook his head. Leaning in he placed a kiss against your cheek, smiling you shifted your body then closed your sketch pad as you held out your hand for him to take. “Let’s go out for a walk”

Grinning he took your hand not minding his hand getting dirty with the Graphite you were using, because when he was with you he finally felt like he can be himself.

—before reading, note that i wrote this when i was not fully conscious (the story doesn’t even make sense), the two are kids in this (mc and camilo), and this isn’t finished and will most likely never be. it literally has the worst last sentence ever. i’ve warned ya

His eyes are almost glaring. They're squinted, you can barely see the pupil, and his nose is scrunched up. His mouth, sneering. You watch him quietly, wide eyes and all.

"Who are you?" He asks, and his head lolls to the side like a puppy, his squeaky voice directed at you. "(y.n)," you respond, voice nearly a whisper. It's a shocker that he hears you. Over the loud noise, anyway.

"(y.n) what?" "What?" Your faces twist into confused expressions but the boy is quick to correct himself. "What's your last name?" Your knees scrape against the floor as you roll to get off your tummy. He copies you, looking almost worried.

You stand when you answer. "I dunno..aren't you supposed to be getting your power or something?" Again, your whispery voice shoots at him and he's left frozen for a second. He breaks the ice quick, however. "Yeah, I am." He nods and puffs his chest out before resting enclosed hands on his hips. His curly hair bounces during the movement. "It's gonna be cool."

You turn and, surprisingly, he follows, chocolate eyes watching you with a boyish smile on his lips. "And it's called a gift, by the way. That I'm gonna get. And it'll be cool..!" He talks and talks, all the while you admire his large house and the village people who've gathered there. You only interrupt his mantra once you spot your father clapping along with the music. "Look..!" Your chubby finger points, "It's my papa!" The boy follows your finger, and finds a man that looks similar to you. He nods in acknowledgement, before his face does that almost glaring thing. Where his eyes are squinted and his nose bunches up, lips taut. Twice now has he done this.

"I've never seen you guys before," he turns, and you wonder if his face will hurt after a while of making that expression, "when did you come here?" "..to your house?" It's your turn to loll your head like a puppy.

And, for just a second, for a tiny, itty bitty fleeting moment, Camilo wants you to do that again. That cute little dumb puppy head thing that just suits you...cute.

"No," he stops his thoughts, clears his brain, and focuses back on the conversation, "to Encanto. This..place." He stretches out his short arms and spins around, giggling. You giggle too, and it's soft, quiet, barely heard. You begin to remind him of his sister. And that's an uncomfortable thought, Camilo reasons. His new friend reminding him of his sister…

Weird. He already acts differently around you compared to her. So he looks at you, long and hard, and you stare back, awkward, slowly walking backwards until Camilo says—
