How Sam met Alpine
It wasn't like Bucky was keeping Alpine a secret from Sam
No, it was the fact that for the longest time, Sam was sure Bucky got a cat
Bucky talked about Alpine a lot, normally just to vent about the weird ass shit she got up to
he thought it was pretty obvious that she was his neighbour
but I guess starting every daily conversation with "hey guess what Alpine did today..." like a proud stage mom doesn't help
It started off when Sam and Bucky had gone out for drinks a couple of weeks after Bucky and Alpine had their first 'family' dinner
"Alpine knocked over a few glasses today, just out of the blue. Completely for no reason."
"Shit happens i guess."
the next day, there was another thing
"So, Alpine just comes over and smacks my arm, like i was the one in the wrong. I didn't even do anything!"
sam laughs it off
"Kids these days man" Sam thinks it a funny joke because Bucky is a cat-dad
Bucky is confused because should a 21 year old just be smacking men?
is that a crime?
A few weeks later, they're training with the shield and Bucky shares more stories during their break
"I bought some straws, just cause my teeth were getting sensitive, with ice - shut the fuck up Sam, I know you have those weird ass straws that look like glasses - anyway, Alpine just keeps chewing them. Nothing else, just chewing."
Sam is starting to think that Bucky is going to start an Instagram account for this cat
"I also bought a plant yesterday, I went to the store for milk, came back and it had a bite mark in it."
"A bite mark?"
"Alpine BIT my plant. It's dead. She's a murderer Sam."
Honestly, Sam thought that either Bucky had never met a cat before
OR
Bucky adopted a crackhead instead of a cat
(little does he know, that's exactly what happened)
"So I wake up at 2AM yeah, there she is. Stood over me, staring at me, nibbling on a chip."
"Dude, get an exorcist or something, jesus christ"
Honestly, Sam was happy for Bucky
truly, he was
BUT if he had to hear anymore stories about this damn cat
he was going to sign up for a long mission abroad
maybe Greece
Athens
they have crimes, right?
And for a while, it was silent
Sam had invited Bucky to a family cookout and Bucky seemed to enjoy himself
he was getting along with Sam's family
playing with his nephews
honestly, he seemed happy
at the end of the day though, there was the mention of that damn cat
"Next time, I'll bring Alpine. She'd love this."
"That and she shouted at me for leaving her out."
he probably just meant that she was meowing and hissing at him
he suddenly liked this cat
i mean, how bad could it be if it was hissing at Bucky
then again
what was this sudden obsession with a cat
it was a bit worrying
it wasn't like it was a person he could talk to and laugh with
not like a friend
Bucky was on his way to become the crazy old cat lady from the 1940s
and as much as Sam wanted to see it
Steve would have killed him if he let Bucky do that to himself
a few months later, Sam decided to see what this whole weird relationship was between Bucky and his cat
see if he needed an intervention or something
of course Bucky was confused when there was a knock on the door
Alpine would have just burst in (she'd gotten very confident that he wouldn't just throw her out of the door)
it would be incredibly valid
he's even more confused when he opens it to Sam holding a packet of cat treats and a pack of beer
"Thought i'd drop in and see the little furball"
"furball- what?" it's too late
Sam is already walking around the flat going pspspsppsps
he's actually quite offended that Alpine didn't greet him at the door
what was her dad teaching her?!
"Sam... what are you doing."
"I'm calling for the devil, obviously"
"The devil? Sam-"
"Here kitty kitty"
HONESTLY
these men have zero communication skills
it's only when the devil herself walks into Bucky's flat holding a bunch of receipts that Sam looks at Bucky worriedly
who the fuck was this girl
why is she walking into his apartment
uninvited
holding receipts
"Hey Buck, I know thinks may have changed since the 40s but like... what are taxes and how do I pay them."
WHO IS THIS WOMAN?!
Bucky looks physically drained already
"Kid... have you not been paying your taxes?"
"Have you?"
"YES! IT'S ILLEGAL NOT TO!"
the girl deadass scoffs
"Ha, okay mr winter soldier."
"kid i sWEAR TO GOD"
she just mocked-
WHO THE FUCK IS THIS KID
"Who are you?"
"Oh! Falcon, Sam Wilson right? I'm Alpine."
Bucky rolls his eyes
He will find out her real name
one day
"You're human."
"..."
"..."
"I hadn't noticed that, thank you."
slowly, Sam haned her the cat treats and she just nodded
though she looked at Bucky like
wtf
is this an avengers thing?
is she being indoctrinated?
she cant fight
she would literally die
she has the fighting capability of a raw pork sausage
the most she could do was T pose at them
"Thank.... you?"
"I thought you were a cat..."
a moment of silence
".... why?"
"I mean... there was the time you knocked over the glasses"
"they were disgusting, it was a mercy killing"
"you bit his plant"
"Killed my plant"
"i didn't like the way it was looking at me, it was giving very Loki in 2012 trying to take over Stark tower vibes."
"plants... plants don't have eyes"
"And Loki was just a myth, now here we are."
Sam can't put his frustration into words and Bucky is grinning
because FINALLY
someone else gets to deal with this kid
"Buck I thought you had a cat"
"I'm allergic to cats Sam"
Of course he is
he couldn't have just gotten a dog
or a bird
maybe even a lizard
but no
he had to just adopt a random kid
a random kid.... that was trying to eat cat treats
"HEY!"
Bucky never turned so quickly to grab the packet of treats
"Alpine, no!"
honestly she's pissed
she just wanted to do her taxes
then she met Sam
but then he presented her with the chance to eat some cat treats?
she was just curious
intrusive thoughts always win with Alpine
damn
sulking, she sits herself down on the couch, watching as Bucky chucks the treats on the chair next to it
Sam stands with his arms crossed, still confused as hell
"What kind of a name is Alpine? You some sort of agent or something? Or are your parents just weird?"
"bro i don't know, ask bucky"
Sam looks scandalised
Bucky named a random girl in his building
"Bucky wtf man"
"Not like that, it sounds weird when you say it like that"
"Buck a random kid just walks into your- WHY IS SHE EATING THE CAT TREATS?!"
Bucky has never tackled anyone so fast
"ALPINE!"
Sam can't believe his eyes
he didn't know if a cat was better or worse
but, he had to admit
watching Bucky struggle, in all his super soldier strength, to get Alpine to stop eating things designed for animals?
that shit was entertaining
It was obvious that they were close
fighting like siblings
Bucky cared enough about her to make her stop eating shit not meant for humans
Bucky seemed happy
and that was good enough for Sam
besides
they could terrorise this man together and never get bored

Sam sighed as he laid on the couch of the safehouse. Him and Torres were out on a mission for the Air Force and Bucky was back in Louisiana either with his sister and nephews or chilling in their apartment with the cat they adopted, Alpine. Sam wanted nothing more than to be cuddled up with Bucky on the couch watching whatever newest reality tv program the super soldier ended up getting obsessed with.
“Dude.” Torres looked over at him from the kitchen. “I swear to god if you sigh one more time, I’ll paint your wings with butterflies and rainbows.”
Sam looked over at Torres with an eyebrow raised. “Do it and I’ll write you up for insubordination.”
Torres chuckled as he continued making his lunch. “Nah, man. You wouldn’t.” He grabbed his sandwich and took a bite as he made his way to sit on the other end of the couch from Sam. “I’m the only one who can keep up with you, Cap.”
“Dude, don’t talk with your mouth full.” Sam groaned as Torres started chewing obnoxiously. He stood up from the couch and went to the kitchen to make himself lunch.
“Whatever, dad.” Torres teased. “But seriously. If you sigh again, I’ll call your man for you.”
Sam rolled his as he went to the kitchen to make himself lunch. He didn’t think he was sighing all day. It’s not his fault he misses his boyfriend. Okay…well, maybe it is. But also Sam told the Air Force he wouldn’t go on any missions by himself. And now he realizes he should have been more specific and said he wouldn’t go on a mission unless it's him and Bucky.
Sam held in a sigh, since he wasn’t sure how serious Torres was, and grabbed a pot to get water boiling for some boxed mac and cheese. As he waited for the water to boil, Sam grabbed his phone out of his pocket and pulled up his and Bucky’s text thread. The last message was Sam letting Bucky know they made it to the safehouse. Thankfully this mission wasn’t complete radio silence, just limited contact. Sam typed out a message to his boyfriend hoping he was still awake.
‘Hi babe’
‘Hello, Samuel.’
‘What’s up with the full name?’
‘Sarah just told me something stupid you did when you were a kid.’
‘I’m not even going to ask what it is. I miss you’
‘I miss you too. How’s the mission going?’
‘Boring. Torres and I are at the safe house. Apparently I was sighing too much. Torres threatened to paint my wings.’
‘*laughing crying emoji* omg that’s amazing.’
‘I love you’
‘I love you more’
‘More than *picture of a Lord of The Rings movie poster’
‘...know your place, Samuel’
Sam chuckled. Of course Bucky doesn’t love him more than Lord of the Rings.
‘Alright, alright. Well I should go. Don’t need the enemy coming to the safehouse. I ain’t making enough mac and cheese for them.’
‘It better not be the boxed stuff?’
‘...’
‘SAMUEL THOMAS WILSON!’
Sam shook his head with a smile. Only Bucky would raise a fit about him eating boxed mac and cheese. Ever since Bucky got the recipe from Sarah when she made her mac and cheese, Bucky had banned the box stuff from being in the apartment.
The water boiled and Sam smiled to himself as he opened the box, took the cheese packet out, and dumped in the noodles. He could hear Bucky in his mind screaming at him and it made him smile even more. Texting Bucky even for just those few minutes put Sam in a better mood.
“Oh my god. He’s smiling now.” Torres groaned in the other room which made Sam laugh. He thought about sighing dramatically but smiling suited him better.

Romanticize the Life

[Bucky Barnes x Female!Reader]
Synopsis: An abrupt ending to a short dream leaves you flustered at breakfast.
WC: 901
Category: Lime/Spicy, Fluff, Alpine (the precious baby)
Not the story starting out strong and ending weak because I got writer’s block in the midst of writing. It makes me want to cry but it’s been sitting in my drafts forever, so I finally got the courage to post it. Also... I did not proof read this (oops) so if you see any mistakes, please let me know!!
『••✎••』
Giggles erupted from your throat as you eased into his embrace, kissing him soft and slow. They were passionate kisses that he accepted with full authority. His hands made their way back to grasp your hips as he pulled you in close, creating a twitch in his pants. He ignored this however with lips moving slightly downwards, leaving a trail of soft taps before making its way to its destination.
Your head rolled back in appreciation, your body pressed against him as he grinds into you, leaving his wet, slobbery kisses around your collarbone. Hickeys soon to be born within hours.
You inclined your head, letting his tongue run over you, again and again. Your legs shook and quivered underneath him, feeling the pre-pleasure soaking through your underwear.
And then he kisses your upper lip, resulting in a sigh. You open your mouth wider and kiss him back harder, hands clinging to his neck. He lets his hands raise to grip your hair, pinning you in place. He lets his tongue slip inside your mouth again, and you groan, feeling him shudder in response, a good kind of shudder. The carefulness of his movements opens up, and the kissing grows wetter and hungrier, and more urgent by the moment.
He breaks apart momentarily to look at you with assertive eyes, hands gripped tightly onto your thighs. He whispers your name, pulling a fallen hair sliver back behind your ear. His piercing eyes burn holes into your heart, making your skin grow goosebumps.
“Buck…” You mutter beneath him, hands flying to his hair.
“What?”
Your head jerks up from the table, eyes wide and mouth half-open. You forgot where you were for a moment, taking in the fact you weren’t in your bedroom. You were at Sam’s. In his kitchen.
Holy shit… did you…?
Your widened eyes found Bucky’s, sitting across from you. While chopping on an apple, he was currently giving you a sketchy look. “Uh, B-Buck?”
“Yeah? What’d you want?”
Oh my god… you did.
“I…. uh… nothing, never mind.” You muttered rapidly, searching the table for something to munch on. The amount of embarrassment you held was about uncontainable. You were a second away from running away to lock yourself in the bathroom.
But, of course, the soldier didn’t give up. His eyes squinted daringly at yours, not even caring when his newly adopted cat pounced on the table — begging for attention.
He would’ve said something to you if Sam hadn’t walked into view, starting his typical banter.
“Hey, Bambi!” His voice bounced all over the cabinets. “Care to explain why your stupid cat tore up my new couch?!”
“No, not really!” Bucky slowly tore his eyes away from you, giving his angel of a cat all the attention he wanted. You could’ve sworn you heard a mutter escape his lips, something that sounded like, “good boy.”
“My couch was leather, Bucky.” Sam whined, “Leather.”
“Well, now it’s leather with design,” Bucky smirked, holding his half-eaten apple to his lips. “Alpine got style, what can I say?”
“…Alpine?” Your voice was still shaken up from the ongoing embarrassment in your head but you couldn’t help but question the name.
As if to add emphasis, the cat meowed in response as if he already knew his name. “That’s his name?”
“Yeah,” He shrugged, scratching the attention hog's chin. “That’s what I named him. Thought it was… unique. I didn’t want to pick some lowlife name, you know?”
“It’s an awful name,” Sam yelled with a smile. "Absolutely hideous."
Both Bucky and Alpine snapped their heads in unison towards Sam, giving him a glare that made you let out a few giggles. “No one asked you, Sam.”
“Well, Buck, I think Alpine is a fitting name.” You interrupted, letting the brunette turn to you once again. He took another bite out of his apple, while he listened to your words. Appreciation was clear in his eyes. “It reminds me of those pretty mountain glaciers.”
The pigeon rolled his eyes at you, as you watched him sit on his shredded couch. “Kiss ass.”
James ignored him and smiled at you. And it wasn’t a forced smile like he usually did either, it was a genuine one.
You’ve noticed for a while now how happier he’s been. Ever since he took in Alpine, his life seemed to go his way for once. No bad guys, no hydra, just… family. Friends. It made your heart swell up at the fact he was happy. He was finally happy, after struggling for so long.
However, the smile was short-lived once his brain made the connection that Sam was preoccupied. As his eyes hovered over yours, his eyebrows raised in confusion.
“Are you sure you didn’t want something? You know, before Icarus bugged me.”
“I’m sure, Buck.” You put on an awkward smile, “It truly wasn’t all that important.”
He pushed Alpine gently to the side as he gave you the “totally not convinced” stare. If it had been anything else on your mind, that look would’ve made you give in. But, to tell him that you called his name because you were dreaming of him? Hell no. It was way too damn embarrassing.
He gazed at you softly, his stone blue eyes immersed with unsureness. Little Alpine joined in as well, squeaking as he rubbed his tail on your arm.
“Promise?” Bucky muttered softly.
“Promise.”

10 Facts about Kari and Bucky
Considering these two have not had a truly official start to their relationship as far as the modern MCU is concerned, this is going to be tricky. I've been writing out of sequence at points in their story, so I need to do a timeline to get things in the correct order.
The Brooklyn Boy and the Girl from Naas did not exactly hit it off right away back when they met in the 1940s. Like Steve, Bucky had his eyes firmly planted on Peggy Carter during their first meeting. It helped that Peggy was dressed to the nines and Kari was dressed more like a motor pool mechanic. Kari also thought Bucky was a tad full of himself where the ladies were concerned. And Bucky more than once said Kari was a bit pushy and loud.
Kari doesn’t talk much about it, but she vividly remembers when Bucky started to see her in a different light. The Howling Commandos had been in a bit of a rough fight, and a few of them were in the infirmary after being patched up. When the unit was asleep, Kari walked the ward healing the hurt soldiers until she ran smack into the Peggy, Steve and Bucky who had been watching her from a doorway. Peggy had seen her do it before, and she had tried to keep Steve and Bucky from walking in on Kari. It was kind of hard to miss a woman with glowing green hands in a darkened medical ward.
A few days before his fated fall from that train, Bucky had asked Kari if she would join him for a drink after the mission. A night to remember under the stars. A bit of conversation. Some likely very bad booze. How could she say no?
The night of the fall, Kari came clean to Peggy, Howard and Steve about some of her history because she wanted to go and search for Bucky. She chose not to explain everything in minute detail. They somehow managed to keep General Phillips in the dark. She never found Bucky but saw enough blood to convince her an animal had taken his remains.
Bucky and Kari almost killed each other several times during the years between the accident and their current lives in the modern MCU. She never knew it was him until their fight in November 1991 in Katowice, Poland.
In the flow of the main parts of the story, Bucky has no clue yet about the fact Kari has parts of herself scattered around the multiverse. She knows what they are doing at any given time, and they can reach back to her as well if needed. Bucky also has no idea that some of those parts are involved with his variants in other worlds. Kari does, and part of her is terrified for him to find out any of it yet.
Kari was the one who nudged Bucky to go adopt a cat after he kept playing with her cat Hickory all the time. He adopted Alpine the Christmas before their first kiss.
There are times Kari flinches if Bucky moves a certain way. He choked her during several of their fights, and the “muscle memory” kicks in more often than she wants to admit. She isn’t sure if he’s noticed yet, but she figures he probably has.
They have not been on an actual date in any of my posted stories or my WIPs. For some reason I am having a very hard time with that concept.
I think the saddest thing about these two right now is that I am not sure they will get their “happily ever after” in any story I write. They may have brief glimpses of what happiness is or at least what it is perceived to be by the world around them, but the nature of the MCU makes such a thing a long shot at times. I hope I can, one day, give them a reason to smile.

Can you do a hc about a domestic Bucky? Like with a reader with a normal job and maybe even a kid if you're comfortable?
domestic dad!bucky headcanon
Tumblr media
once bucky and you get serious and move in together, he decides to retire from the whole hero gig so he can spend more time with you and building a life together
my man literally knows jack shit about home decorating, he's honestly just happy to be there
"should we go with a sea salt green or an avocado whip green?" / "doll, i'm going to be honest i don't know what either of those mean, but sea salt just sounds better" / "hmm, we'll go with the avocado."
he CAN build though, so at least you don't have to worry about assembling furniture
he built three separate dresses just to prove he could
then three more because he didn't like the first three
bucky isn't only good at building shit though, he has this husband thing on lockdown
when you come home from a long day of work, this man is the bEST
want a back massage? no questions asked. too tired to cook dinner? that's alright, he already made something
bucky is the sweetest husband and even leaves little notes for you on the fridge before you leave for work
enter dad!bucky into the arena
fuck i am such a softie for dad!bucky
this man is so proud of being a dad and it's fucking adorable
he even talks to the baby like they can understand what he's saying
"so what does my little girl want for dinner tonight, hmm?" / cue incoherently babbling noises / "that's what i was gonna say :0"
since bucky doesn't really go out on missions anymore and is cashing in those retirement checks, this man has gone into full stay at home dad mode^tm
having a daughter has also shown this man is very particular about his kid's fashion
"i don't know if she should go with the overalls or the dress for this occassion. this is her first public outing and i want her to look her best." / "baby, we're just going to the wilson's for a bbq. i don't think sam cares. :)" / "who the fuck said anything about sam? >:| becca dresses for no one but herself." / "then go with the overalls, we can all be matching." / "you're a fucking genius, doll." / "that was a joke" / "too late, we're wearing the matching overalls."
once becca hits three years old, bucky is hellbent on convincing you that you all need a cat
"think about it, becca needs another playmate." / ". . . she goes to daycare already, buck." / "no, but someone at home. she can only find this old man interesting for so much longer." / "she has toys for that." / "c'mon, what's the harm with another barnes? i'll feed em and everything." / "bucky, we are not having another baby. / "baby? i meant can we get a cat."
a week later you adopted alpine who is almost as spoiled, if not more, than becca
bucky built that damn feline a whole cat jungle while she was still a kitten
but, becca and alpine do get along super well and it's adorable to see alpine fall asleep snuggled up under her
all in all, this man is the biggest family man ever and you wouldn't have it any other way

Another One?
Summary: Bucky and his spouse didn't want kids, but nobody said anything about a pet. or four.
Warnings: swearing, shreksual innuendo, fluff, bucky pls stop adopting ever fucking stray animal, not edited
a/n: I'm writing in second person for the first time and this feels very weird. Also, bucky calls reader doll but not necessarily in a feminine way
Word Count: 635
James Buchanan Barnes is scary and edgy and a deadly assassin, and the kitten he's trying to hide from his spouse does not change that fact, no matter how much Sam or any of the others insist otherwise. He's scary, period.
His beloved loves him, that's why they're his beloved, so they should understand his impulses. People do different things to cope, his spouse indulges in trashy soap operas and cackles at horror movies, some people take long naps and take self-care days, so he shouldn't be judged for adopting, or attempting to adopt, every single stray he comes across, right? After all, at least he isn't watching The Kissing Booth.
Really, Bucky should've divorced you the moment you forced him to watch the movie and its sequel, eyes positively gleaming with delight and cruel joy, and the only reason he didn't is because he loves you. Plus, you're cute.
"If having kids will make you stop, then you're free to put it in me,"
Bucky freezes, hand on the apartment door he'd tried to close without letting you know. Clearly, you knew. Fuck.
"What?" He questions, deciding to play it dumb. His bag lets out a meow. Fucking shit goddammit. He thinks he's running out of swear words, though you have increased his vocabulary considerably. Your reasoning behind making him sit down for a "Swear Session" was that you didn't want him moaning 'fiddlesticks' in bed. He did it once, just to annoy you. According to you, the worst part was that he hadn't even been in bed.
"World's best assassin," you mutter, raising an eyebrow as you make your way towards him, hand held out expectantly.
"Look, I know we have too many-"
"We have three,"
"-and this might be more than we can handle-"
"The smell of dog food is giving me trauma, Buck, we have more dog treats than human food,"
"-but she was so sad-"
"you named the last dog 'Turkey' Who the fuck names a dog Turkey,"
"I couldn't say no-"
"Are you into pet-play? Is that it? Fucking zoophilia, always knew you were weird, no wonder the penguin at the zoo likes you so much,"
He opens his duffel bag and shoves out a white kitten into your face, staring at you expectantly. You're not sure which one is cuter, Bucky or the cat. In the end, you're the cutest, you decide.
"Doll-"
"You gonna name her Q-tip? Ovulation? Cum? Bleach Baby?"
"Her name's Alpine," he says, surprising you with a shockingly normal name, and pulling her away from you and covering her ears at your crass language, "and don't say that in front of the kids,"
"Kid," you correct him, "the girl downstairs is walking the rest of 'em,"
"So," he begins, raising her little body, "Can we keep her?"
You sigh, rolling your eyes affectionately, "You're such a fucking himbo. Fine,"
He grins, and you think you're going to melt. So fucking cute.
You reach out to pet her, and she hisses at you, making you withdraw your hand.
"Broody," you note, "like you,"
"I'm not-"
"Sure you ain't. I bet she's an aries," you say, not even letting him finish his sentence, and nod towards the cat.
"Aries slander," he chides, and you shrug.
"At least she isn't Pisces,"
"Hey, now!"
You watch her trot around, examining your odd choice in furniture with distaste. She tips over a plastic glass, and you grin.
"She's like me,"
"A walking disaster?"
"One more word and this disaster is walking outta here,"
He smiles, hugging you from behind, resting his head on your shoulder. He laces his fingers with yours, placing a kiss on your cheek and whispers, "So, while I was coming here, I saw a dog-"
"Finish that sentence you fucker and we're getting a divorce,"

What professions do you like to headcanon Bucky retiring to post-WS? What about non-serum AU?
Ohhhhhh what a fun ask! I always loved how Bucky loved science and technology, and it's a shame we don't get to explore this aspect of him more in the movies.
Bucky seeing Howard's floating car
Tumblr media
Bucky seeing Wakanda's shield
Tumblr media
And I headcanon him as a huge nerd. He read the Hobbit right when it came out, after all! I think I read a meta somewhere that he would have had to get it specially ordered, or something? A man after my own heart.
Tumblr media
There is also evidence in the comics that he loves animals (see: Bucky Barnes stealing the space pig because he thought it was lonely and Alpine of course). And I love our Wakanda headcanons where he raises goats and names all of them after Steve. I mean, when he was finally able to get a little peace in Wakanda, what does he do? He chooses to farm, with one arm.
Tumblr media
Like, I'm sure they didn't order him to do it. I think they probably asked him what he wanted to do now that he was trigger-word free, and he asked where they needed help. Or maybe he just volunteered to help out the village he was living in.
We also know that Bucky is good with kids! (both human and caprine lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really see him as a caretaker, at heart. In the comics (I haven't read them) I think he adopts a kid or something? Or chooses to take care of a kid? And he was always looking out for Steve, pulling him out of scrapes in Brooklyn and following him back to war. And when he was finally healed, he chose to farm, to help grow things, be part of a community, when for most of his life, he was forced to fight, to kill. God, he looked so sad when T'challa told him a fight was on its way.
Tumblr media
He doesn't want to fight anymore, but he will if the cause is right.
Anyway, this is a very long-winded way of compiling all of Bucky's traits to explain my headcanons lol.
He loves science and technology, and science fiction and fantasy. He loves animals. He loves caring for things. He doesn't want to fight/kill unless he absolutely has to.
I think that, if he was given a choice after being the Winter Soldier, he would either join the Guardians of the Galaxy to explore and help the universe (and one of my headcanons is Steve wishing Bucky could be with him in that spaceship when they went to kill Thanos, because he would have loved it), or start an animal sanctuary with Steve. Or, better yet, as @greyhavensking and I have discussed, an animal sanctuary that takes in alien animals as well as Earth animals. Because he did steal that space pig in the comics when he thought it was lonely :P
Or, maybe he could help mentor/train the new young Avengers. He did teach Captain America how to box, after all. Though I would prefer for him to retire entirely from the superhero life unless the universe is ending lol
For a non-serum AU, I think he would have gone into engineering, or space exploration, astrophysics, etc because I think he's a real smartypants (as I understand, there is a lot of math involved to calculate shots as a sniper). I am also very partial to Novelist Bucky fics XD

I honestly believe that almost every trope that commonly appears in Sambucky stories gets better or at least more intriguing if you switch the roles when you decide who does what.
The most obvious example: “Sam takes care of Bucky”. Like... yeah. It can be nice and it’s in character for Sam to be very caring or protective. Sure. But also: no one ever took care of Sam throughout his entire MCU career and he’s not the type of person who would even ask for that help in the first place. Meanwhile Bucky is also known for being very helpful, so he should easily notice that Sam has a problem and do everything to fix it. That way you give Bucky some more agency so he’s not a helpless emo boi who can barely exist on his own... And you give Sam some love and caring affection he deserves after the last four+ years of his life. (Ideally they’d both put the equal amount of effort into making their partner feel happy, but I'm not sure everyone is ready for this revolutionary concept...)
Another example: “Bucky really wants to adopt a cat, but Sam doesn’t let him”. As if Sam Wilson wouldn’t just come back home bringing another injured bird every week. As if! You cannot convince me that Sam doesn’t help some helpless crows recover in his garage, trying to sneak behind Bucky’s back, because Bucky had enough of finding feathers in his cereal. So obviously Sam could be the first one to casually come home with Figaro and be like: “well... since you don’t like birds I have this little guy :)”. (Give Bucky a month or two and he’ll not only learn to love their new cat, but also go get Alpine without hesitation.)
Also: “Bucky cannot sleep and he has nightmares”. I mean... he still has them, but I feel like a lot of people forget that his entire life changed for the better during tfatws. He found new family and actual partner he trusts. He has home, he made amends, he can make his own choices without constantly feeling like he’s tethered to the past. He still has issues, for sure, but it’s a steady way upwards. Meanwhile Sam’s life has been getting more and more complicated since 2014. In just four years he went from a normal citizen to an Avenger, to a prisoner, to a fugative, to being dead. He lost Steve and seven years he could have spent with his family. I don’t mean to say that Bucky being more used to getting hurt makes his suffering less relevant, but he already hit the rock bottom and is now on his way to heal and be really happy. But Sam just cannot get a break to deal with all of that. Especially now that he’s Captain America. So I really believe he would have a lot of trouble with sleeping without nightmares after all the loss and stress he went through. What I mean is that... Bucky already reached the point where he can (in theory) get better and e.g. get a full night of sleep. But Sam is still on his way there.
I can go on. Bucky really misses Steve? How about: he doesn’t care, because they weren’t even that close after 1940s, but Sam misses Steve a lot since they’ve spent most of their time together (especially after 2016). Sam is the confident one, who’ll always make the first step? How about: Bucky is not that insecure and he’s actualy the more brave one in the relationship, so he’ll take a risk and confess. Etc, etc...
--- ----- ---
Anyway... I know that part of the appeal of fanfiction is that you can go over your favourite tropes and just re-read the same thing over and over again even if you always know what will happen next. But I would love to see more people at least trying to change things up a little bit sometimes. But not in a “make these characters completely different people” way. But more in a “what else can I do with these characters and do I care about them equally?” way.
To be clear: there’s nothing wrong with using popular tropes. At all. But most of the time these tropes are designed for Bucky’s benefit. And for people who actually like Sam it can get kind of... boring.
(The bonus for you, as an author, is that your story will stand out and be more memorable once you ditch the most obvious solutions everyone chooses. There is a reason why many of the most recognizable Sambucky writers are the ones who love both characters equally.)

Tumblr media
After the first proper meal you three had was ate, the meal was far from relaxing.
Sam and Bucky argued the entire meal and you used the term “you two are big children” at least fifteen times and “if you two don’t stop I’m putting you in time out” at least ten times. Meal times with the boys were always entertaining.
“We got a lead on Karli,” Sam said gently, “and the rest of the FlagSmashers. Might be dangerous.” He added gently.
“I’m in,” you said, Sam smiled.
“Cyborg?” Sam turned to Bucky.
“I’m in,” Bucky nodded.
You sensed Bucky was finding this all fighting hard. You sensed how tired and fed up he was as you both got ready.
“When all this is over, we can think about retiring and starting a family …and adopt a cat,” you said gently, wrapping your arms around his waist from behind, kissing his shoulders.
You saw Bucky smile in the mirror.
“Would you be able to retire?” He asked gently, nudging his cheek against your head lovingly.
“If it means living a peaceful life, filled with laughter and love with you by my side, then yes. Yes I will be able to,” you said sighing contently.
Bucky turned around to face you. He looked at you like you hung the moon and stars.
“Today, when the fighting gets tough, just think about our future. Think about a little Barnes running around playing with their Alpine,” you said gently, as your foreheads touch.
“Baby, that’s all I think about,” he said, nudging his nose against you.
“Really?” You asked happily.
“Yep. When I feel like giving up in a fight, I just picture us buying our first home and letting our family grow,” Bucky said gently, lifting his flesh hand up to stroke your cheek.
You smiled.
“God you’re so cute. I love you,” you said lovingly.
“I love you so so much. I don’t know what I possibly did to deserve you,” Bucky said lovingly.
You smiled at him as you both kissed.
“Remember what I asked you during the first war you and I fought as a married couple? Back in Wakanda?” Bucky asked gently, a hint of tears in his voice.
“…if you don’t make it…i …have to live the rest of my life to the fullest. Meet people. Travel places and …be happy,” you said tearfully, remembering, holding him closer as you remembered.
“That’s my girl,” he said quietly, wrapping his arms around you tightly, pulling you in for a hug.
He rested his chin gently on top of your head as you cuddled into his chest. Your ear right above his heart, his gentle heart beat makes you feel safe. It’s a sound you love.
“Promise me you’ll do the same if I don’t make it, won’t you?” You asked quietly, shutting your eyes at the mere thought of one of you being without the other, and remembering what that was like for five long hard years.
“I promise,” Bucky said tearfully, shutting his eyes.
He honestly couldn’t possibly think of a world where you’re not here, and anytime he thinks about the fact you spent five years alone kills him inside.
“Never forget how much I love you. Whatever happens today and for the rest of the mission, I’m with you. Always,” Bucky said tearfully, holding you closer.
“I will always remember…and don’t you dare forget how much I love you and I’ll always be right next to you,” you said tearfully, taking in his scent.
Bucky held you tighter and you both held each other until you heard a knock at the door.
“You guys ready?” Sam’s voice on the other end pulled you both apart.
“We’re ready,” Bucky said, he went straight back to his brave self.
Bucky looked at you as you heard Sam leave.
“You good, doll?” Bucky asked gently.
“Give me a minute please,” you said gently, putting on a brave face for Bucky.
“Sure,” Bucky said gently, gently brushing a tear away from your face as he left.
Once the door shut, you turned to the mirror and gently clutched Steve’s tags.
“Please. Dad. Steve. Natasha…look out for us,” you said tearfully.
You always spoke to what you called now, your three guardian angels, you always asked them to look out for you all and so far, they haven’t let you down. You sighed tearfully, wiped your eyes then gave yourself a firm nod.
“Come on. You’re Y/N S. Barnes. Le..let’s kick some ass!” You said, bravely.
You kissed Steve’s tags then gently tucked them under your shirt. You sighed heavily then opened the door and went to join your fellas.
——
“Brilliant. It’s Ant and Dec,” you said, making Bucky laugh as John and Lemer unfortunately made an appearance.
“Who?” John asked.
“…never mind,” you said smirking for a while.
“Okay. Teams. Sam, Bucky and I will work together, Y/N, you’re with Lemer,” John said.
“No. No way in hell,” Bucky said, protectively putting his left arm out in front of you.
“I’m trustworthy, I promise,” Lemer said gently, looking at you.
“Over my dead body. My wife is staying with me,” Bucky said, you could hear the fear in his voice.
“Buck. You’re forgetting. I’m not just a Barnes, I’m a Stark too. I can kick ass really well,” you said gently, putting your hand gently on his shoulder.
He turned to you.
“We can’t trust him,” Bucky said gently.
“No,” you said gently, “but you trust me, right?” You asked softly, looking deeply into his oceanic blue eyes.
“With my life,” Bucky said gently, looking into Y/C/E deeply.
You smiled and gently kissed the tip of his nose.
“Right Lemer. I’m precious to Buck. If anything happens to me, you’re gonna have him tailing you 24/7 annnnd me haunting your ass,” you said, going over to Lemer.
Lemer smiled gently. You all went your separate ways. You nodded at Bucky as you all left.
“Why does Sargent Barnes hate John?” Lemer asked gently.
“You’ve gotta remember, Lemer. Walker’s holding something that belonged to somebody Bucky loves …sometimes I think more than me. Bucky and Steve grew up together and Steve is the sole reason Bucky’s here today,” you said gently.
You remembered your final moments with Steve:
“He wants to talk to you,” Sam said gently, he was holding the shield, he looked at Bucky.
You looked at Bucky. You gave his hand a squeeze.
“I don’t want to talk to him,” he said quietly.
“Alright, baby. I’ll go,” you said gently, kissing Bucky’s flesh palm.
You sighed heavily then went over.
“He doesn’t want to talk to me, huh?” Steve said as you sat down next to him.
“No. I’m sorry,” you said gently.
“I thought he wouldn’t,” Steve said gently, looking straight ahead.
“Why didn’t you take Bucky with you? He might have liked to live a life in a world he knows and one where he didn’t have to go to war,” you said gently, kind of grateful he didn’t.
“He doesn’t realise it yet,” Steve said softly, placing his old hand on your knee, “but he will soon. He’s a hero. Sam’s gonna need him and you by his side,” he added gently.
You looked at his wrinkly hand. It felt weird but comforting to know he was alright.
“Why me as well?” You asked tearfully.
“Because you and Bucky are the better halves of me,” Steve said gently, “after everything I learnt from Buck, I taught to you. Sam’s gonna need that. And Bucky…Bucky’s going to need you more than he ever will,” he added gently.
You looked tearfully at him.
“Bucky will always need you, Y/N/N. Always,” Steve said gently. “Look after him, won’t you?” He asked tearfully.
“I will,” you nodded tearfully.
“I’m gonna miss you, kid. You were my favourite,” Steve said, nudging you gently.
“I’m gonna miss you too, Cap…you are my favourite,” you said, tears running down your cheeks.
“Take these,” Steve said gently, taking his tags off and giving them to you. “That way, I’ll always be watching over you, Bucky and Sam. You three are gonna be amazing,” he added gently.
“I love you, Stevie,” you choked, throwing your arms gently around him.
“I love you too, kiddo,” Steve said softly, rubbing your back gently.
“Y/N!!! WATCH OUT!” Lemer’s scream made you snap out of your train of thought.
You didn’t move in time, someone had shot you in the shoulder. You cried out in pain, letting your arm hang loose, blood oozing out of the wound at a dangerously fast rate.
with all the pain and courage, you took three shots at where the shot came from, only to miss. Then, you saw Lemer stand in front of you, then, you watched in horror as a knife went through Lemer.
You tried shooting the person again, but he ran away as soon as John came running through.
“LEMER!” John screamed running to his best friend.
You were trying to put pressure on Lemer’s wound, tears running down your face as the pain you were in was causing you to get dizzy.
“What happened?” John asked angrily, staring at you, ignoring the blood pouring from your wound.
“He …he ….he,” you were getting dizzier.
John growled and ran after the man who killed his best friend. You stumbled up, coated in Lemer and your own blood as you stumbled along to find Bucky.
“I can’t die. I just can’t leave Bucky,” you said tearfully, holding the wound on your shoulder.
Bucky’s eyes widened when he saw you coated in blood. Bucky and Sam darted over to you. Bucky steadied you, as Sam put pressure on your wound.
You heard a woman scream, you all turned around and saw John murder someone with Steve’s …no, Sam’s …shield. You stood in horror.
You looked at Bucky as your eyes grew heavy. Bucky’s beautiful oceanic eyes shone with tears of fear, confusion and shock. You didn’t want him to see anymore.
“Bucky, don’t look,” you said gently, your voice averting his eyes away from John.
Bucky’s attention went back to you as your body grew limp. He felt you collapse onto him sideways. He held you, fear plastered on his face. He looked desperately at Sam before talking to you. Sam looked just as terrified. Unable to move or help Bucky the way he wanted to.
“Y/N? Doll? Doll, wake up. S-stay wi…with me,” Bucky pleaded as you let your head drop to Bucky’s shoulder.
Everything went black from then. All you remember was hearing Bucky’s cries, and Sam’s pleads to get an ambulance.
You felt numb…and everything was black…was this it…?

The SamBuckyness of those cat names...
I know that the cats so far only exists in the comics but given that Sam and Bucky have mostly figured out where they are going to live as of TFATWS, it would seem likely that their cats are going to debut pretty soon in the MCU and I realized something kind of SamBucky-ish about their names...
In case you don't know, Sam's cat is named Figaro and Bucky's cat is named Alpine. At first glance, Bucky's cat name seems unusual considering that you might think that The Alps are not a place that Bucky would want to revisit since that he kinda plunged to his almost-death and lost an arm there in 1945. Why would he want to name his cat after such a location, right? A little psychoanalysis though shows it's actually a positive thing. Bucky loves his cat and taking care of Alpine is a happy and healthy thing for him. Naming the cat Alpine shows that he's attempting to look at the (very) raw hand he's been dealt in life in a way that is balanced enough to include that it led him to some happier end results. The moment that he survived to live into the modern era is, ironically, the moment he fell off the train car in The Alps and he's named his fellow snowy companion after that because Bucky is in a place now where he can view what he's been through as more of his past because he can see more of a future and his present is getting easier to deal with. Sweet, right? But what does that have to do with Sam's cat and SamBucky?
Sam's cat is black and white and named Figaro, presumably after the black and white cat in Disney's Pinocchio. (You can see why I doubt that Marvel will change the names of the cats. ;) ) For Sam to have made this connection, he had to have loved Pinocchio as a kid. It might have been one of his favorite movies growing up. Pinocchio was released by Disney in February 1940 and Disney re-released it into theatres around the world in 1945, after the war ended, making it kind of a movie with a history that is very much tied to the timeline of WW2. In short? One of Sam's favorite movies is from Bucky's era, maybe even was one of the last movies Bucky saw in the theatre before he enlisted in the Army.
So Bucky adopts a cat and names it after the place where his life completely changed-- where he lost an arm, where he was taken prisoner and forced to become his worst nightmare-- but where he also, as a result of all of that, wound up eventually finding a life he never would have had before and lived to see the modern world... and the modern guy he loves adopts a cat and names it after the cat in his favorite movie from his childhood, which is from his partner's time. That's pretty damn cute.

Elif I am very anxious and have a headache :( do you have any really sweet Bucky headcanons?? :( :(
aww honey :( i hope you calm down and get better soon :( ❤️
let's see what we have...
Tumblr media
okay we've talked about househusband!avenger!bucky before so let's talk about him more
after you guys got together and years of saving the world, fighting with the bad guys and all, bucky wants to retire from all of that
you support him about it because it's you who knows about his nightmares, the amount of nights that he skips sleep and how actually tired he is. so you support him
it doesn't take long for him to retire: one meeting with all the team members, and he's retired
after he's out of the team, bucky wanted to move out of the tower which you supported him on that, too. you moved out, found a very nice and not too big or not too small apartment with a nice view, you moved there quickly. you've hand picked all the furniture and steve had donated a couple of his paintings as a house gift
now you have a very cozy and beautiful home
alpine, being the king of the castle, would lounge at the balcony in springs and summers, then he'd move onto lounge on bucky season when winter and fall come
cherry, a puppy bucky brought home on a rainy day, would lounge with alpine usually. they would play and pass out with alpine laying on top of her, or both of them laying on top you and bucky
you love your new life. you love your home
bucky is happier, you realize. he's home, cooking and cleaning and knitting still. you offer him to help whenever you catch him do something and when he agrees, it turns into a very domestic scene which you love that, too
after a year and a half you've spent time in this new life, bucky comes up to you and tells you that he wants to open a shop sort of thing
"what do you mean?" you ask and watch bucky blush adorably. bucky shrugs, grabbing alpine and hugging him to his chest, he sits down in front of you on the kitchen table
"i want to open a shop," he repeats, but then continues. "sort of like a bakery, you know i love to bake, and maybe a little knitting place in it?" you raise your brows and bucky's blush darkens. "i, uh, i talked to sam and he said some veterans like to knit and maybe i can have them over to give them something to do. i thought we could sell what we make and maybe we could give all the money to the veterans who have a hard time to afford prosthetics? tony said he'd help."
you are speechless, but you want to scream at the world that you fucking love this man
"uhh," you start, then blink a couple times. "bucky that's... that's great, baby! that's a great idea and the supporting the veterans thing! i love it! yes, alright, how can i help?"
three months later, bucky opened a bakery/knitting store in brooklyn: cherry knits
you had told him that he could also take cherry with him when he's at the shop, and you could look into the programs where you can make cherry a therapy dog, and bucky loved the idea. so much so that he named the shop after her
as soon as it's open, it started to work really well
bucky was adamant on hiring only students or veterans to work with him, it was all benefiting someone in someway
bucky would teach veterans how to knit (he even looked it up how to knit with one hand, you fucking love this man) and to those who are interested, bucky would also teach baking, too
sometimes kids would join them on their knitting time: creating a very warm environment and making everyone laugh or chuckle with the childish way they think
cherry was a blast, so bucky said he wanted to adopt a couple more dogs and trained them for the same purpose and you agreed. you love seeing him happy and this is making happy, you think
one day when you step into the shop, you catch bucky cradling a five-year-old boy with one arm (cancer, he later filled you in) to his chest while showing him how to do the frosting on a vanilla cake. they are smiling a little, you realize and you can't help your own smile spreading on your face. the scene in front of you is so cute, so sweet, you feel yourself tear up a bit
because in this short amount of time, bucky had touched so many lives and had made them so much better... you feel like you don't deserve him
he helped countless of veterans, he taught them how to knit and after they got the hang of it, many incredible things have been created and tony, like he said he'd help, organized a charity gala sort of thing where they got to sell the things they knitted. bucky taught them how to bake and cook sometimes, helped a lot of veterans to find jobs at a bakery or a restaurant (the ones that don't require the schooling, at least)
your therapy dogs (cherry, berry, plum and sugar) were a hit. they are loved by the vets and the kids, most of the times bringing laughter into the shop. they helped vets to get used to the contact, the touch
watching something blossoming like this feels amazing, you think and sigh deeply, happily
"hey," bucky comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist. "what do you think?"
you lean against him and kiss his chin. "that i'm so fucking proud of you." you turn around in his arms and hook your own around his neck. "i love you, bucky," you say. "everything you've done... i'm so damn proud of you."
bucky smiles at you, tears in his eyes and cute blush on his cheeks. "i love you, too, honey," he whispers. "couldn't have done any of them without your support. i'm proud of us."
you smile and pull him down for a kiss. you pull them a couple seconds later. "you have any empty place for another kid?" you ask, and bucky looks at you frowning.
"if i didn't, i'd create one, you know it," he says and you grin. you know he would really do that
"good. because in nine months you gonna need one." you feel him stiffen, get even more confused. chucking a little, you decide to put him out of his misery. "i'm pregnant."
you will never ever forget how his face lightened up, how big he smiled and that victory scream. your grin widen
"am i gonna be a father?" he asks and you nod. a second later you are scooped up and hugged by your teddy bear of a man tightly. his laughter is ringing in your ears like a beautiful song
he is happy. he is in love. and you aren't too far behind

You sat on the front porch as your fingers flipped through the page of the romance novel you had your nose in. It was a beautiful day, the weather wasn’t too hot or too cold, perfect to spend hours escaping into a story outside. Alpine purred on the chair where Bucky would sit if he was here but he wasn’t because he was on an overseas mission with Sam and though you offered to come with him, Tony said that it would be best if you sat this one out. You didn’t take it personally, however, it was hard to be separated from him for nearly a month.
Bucky said he’d be coming home soon and though the mission kept delaying them to come home, Bucky called and texted you every day to let you know that he was alright and how far on completing the mission had they gone. You were glad that Sam and Bucky had each other while you weren’t around to take care of him because you knew that Sam was the only person who could ground him other than you.
You and Bucky had been together for nearly five months now, after your recovery in Wakanda and adjusting to the new life of being superheroes, you both decided that you wanted to settle in a more remote place. All of the Avengers had their own places outside of the compound so you thought, why don’t you get yours? You talked about getting your own place in Brooklyn but eventually, you came to a decision where somewhere in the country would be better for both of your mental beings, while also still residing in the New York area so that you’d be ready in case there are emergency missions.
Since moving to the countryside, you had felt much more at peace and you had learned more about yourself than before. You were in the middle of the process of moving in when Bucky was needed by Tony to take care of an international matter with Sam, so Tony helped call in some people to help you with your stuff.
The place you had with Bucky was lovely, it wasn’t anything big or swanky, it was simply a rural rustic home that blends woods and stones as the foundation. It had a large loft where you placed your bed, and the roof had upper windows which shed lights into the entire room. It was even more stunning at night where you could see the stars and the moon that illuminated the dark space. From the veranda, you could enjoy the beautiful view of greenery and the lake surrounding you. It was heaven, but most importantly, it was your and Bucky’s little heaven.
You’d often feel lonely living in the cabin, so you decided to adopt a cat while Bucky was away. You didn’t tell him because you wanted it to be a surprise. You named her Alpine. You’d always wanted to have a pet and now that you had your own place, you could have one without worrying it would bother anyone.
You talked to Bucky this morning and he estimated that he’d be coming home in two days, which means he’d be home by his birthday. You couldn’t think of a more perfect gift than this adorable, blue-eyed cat. It was as if she got them from her dad whom she had yet to meet. You also wanted to make his birthday and celebrate his coming home more special so you put down the book and went to the grocery store in town that afternoon to shop for the ingredients to bake a cake.
You had learned a lot of new things after you moved here, and baking was quickly becoming your hobby, so you were excited to utilize that new skill to surprise the love of your life. You spent the next day in the kitchen so once Bucky walked through the front door, the cake would be ready to be served. You were giddy thinking about the look on his face and how proud you would feel to make him happy with something you made of your own.
You were lying on your couch with Alpine by your feet, reading the book that you didn’t get to finish yesterday when you heard your phone notifying you a text had been received.
I’m outside, babydoll.
You instantly got up from your couch and put your book on the table. Your first thought this morning was Bucky would back to your arms this afternoon and you were ecstatic. You had missed him terribly and you wanted to curl up in his embrace and never let him go. He was your anchor and you were his rock, you both needed each other to get through the days. How you managed to survive so long without him was beyond you.
You chose a nice outfit, nothing fancy just a simple sundress that you feel your best in, put on some makeup and did your hair. Though you didn’t have a clue on makeup products, let alone apply them all over your face, you did spend a handful of times watching Youtube for guidance. You knew you didn't have to put all that effort to keep Bucky in love with you but you wanted to do something nice for him. For the first time in forever, you were a free woman who was allowed to make her own choices, you were going to revel in exploring them.
You opened the door and there he was, as handsome as the devil, as gentle as an angel. Everything about him captivated you yet, he soothed every nervous system in your body too. He was grinning at you like he had just won a prize and you couldn’t help but throw yourself at him as soon as the door was fully opened. “Bucky!”
He hugged you back, holding you so tightly to his chest and he kissed you as a lover would until you needed air. “You’re a sight for sore eyes,” he swept the hair that was falling on your face, slightly hiding your beauty.
You smiled at his flattery, “I got a surprise for you…”
“A surprise?” He looked genuinely perplexed. “What’s the occasion?”
“It’s your birthday, silly. And to celebrate you coming home, of course, because I missed you so badly.”
“Sweetheart, you don't need to get me anything, you’re all the blessing I need in my life.”
“And you are mine, but you deserve more. So, close your eyes.” You ordered him like you were an excited 10 years old ready to show off her science project to her parents. He did as he was told and you took his hand and led him to the kitchen where his cake was sitting perfectly. “Don’t open your eyes until I tell you!”
He chuckled, “okay.”
Bucky trusted you wholeheartedly so he didn’t worry he’d walk into a wall or slam his hips to the kitchen counter as he was being led down to where his cake was. “Okay, now open your eyes.” He did so and he saw you standing behind the tiny dining table, near the kitchen chanting Ta-Da! Presenting a chocolate birthday cake, in the shape of a heart in front of you.
You lit up the candles that were in the shape of 106 and you brought the cake closer to him, “happy birthday, my love.”
Bucky was grinning from ear to ear, he couldn’t contain the happiness swelling in his heart. While he was on his bike, driving from the compound to his cabin-like home, all he expected was a warm shower and being tangled between the sheets with you. Since he was turned into The Winter Soldier, he no longer cared about birthdays or his age. Time felt blurry and all that mattered was his purpose in his life which is to make amends to the wrongs he committed during his winter soldier days and the few people that he cared about.
But now you were in his life, you were going to make sure his birthdays are special and that every second you both spent together was precious. “I got another surprise for you…” You walked to the couch to carry Alpine and when Bucky saw her, his eyes lit up.
“You got us a cat?!” You handed her to Bucky gently like a newborn baby and Bucky cradled her to his chest, looking like an affectionate father.
“I did. I felt lonely while you were away so I thought I’d get a pet now that we’ve got our own place and I saw her at the shelter when I went to town and she looked so adorable, I just had to take her home, Buck,” you watched Bucky lovingly stroke the cat’s ear.
“I never had a pet before…”
“I know, and neither had I so I thought, the three of us would make a wonderful family.”
“Thank you, doll. This is… This is the best birthday gift I could ever ask for.”
“You’re welcome, love. By the way, her name’s Alpine.”
Bucky nodded, “suits her.”
“Now, as delicious as that cake looks, I really need to take a shower, would you mind joining me?” Bucky held out his hand for you.
“There’s nothing else I’d rather do,” Bucky took your hand and carried you in bridal style to your bathroom, which had rustic walls like the rest of the house and dark brown sink vanity with a mirror at the centre above.
Bucky put you down and you both began stripping out of your clothes. You helped Bucky with his once yours were on the hanger because you wanted to feel him, really feel him now. Once only his boxer remained, you slid the shower glass door and you pulled him, giggling like teenagers trying to sneak out in the middle of the night as he struggled to take off his boxer with the way you were pulling him.
You turned on the shower, just warm enough to soothe your nerves and help Bucky relax. Bucky cupped your face and you both began making out, the stream of water made it difficult to keep your eyes open but you always got so lost in his kisses that you could never keep your eyes open even if you wanted to. It felt like heaven to feel those lips again after a month of his absence.
Bucky lifted you and you wrapped your legs around his waist. He slammed you to the bathroom glass as he dominated your mouth, his tongue tangled with yours as his vibranium arm leaned against the glass. Bucky trailed kissed to the column of your neck and you threw your head back, giving him easier access. He bit the skin, marking you as his.
The water kept flowing down and you both forgot what you were there for in the first place. “Oh, missed you so fucking much, doll.”
“I missed you too,” you said as you panted.
“Those nude pictures you sent weren’t helping either. Each time I see you naked, it went straight to my cock. It was torture not to have you right away.” Bucky put you down and kissed your body, down to your stomach until he reached the part where you needed him most. Bucky lifted your right leg onto his shoulder and kissed the inside of your thigh as he left a love bite with his teeth there too.
You didn’t mind, you were his as much as he was yours and you loved it when he got a little rough or possessive, though you knew Bucky would never hurt you and if he did, you wouldn’t hesitate in telling him. But you loved to walk around with his marks on you, you wore them proudly.
Bucky dipped his head to your core, tasting your arousal like a famished man. He had been deprived of your taste for a month, he wasn’t going to hold back. He could spend hours in between your legs if you let him and he’d never get tired of it. Bucky licked a stripe of your slit, making you throw your head back again and moan.
He grabbed your arse to keep you standing, with the way he was devouring you, your thighs began to shake, and you would’ve crumbled to the floor if he wasn’t holding you. You tugged his hair, keeping his face close to your cunt. You couldn’t help but grind yourself onto his face and you could feel him smirking.
The way his stubble grazed your delicate skin was tantalizing, you’d tried to close your legs a few times around his head but he always held them back. You could feel your muscles tightening, but before you could burst, Bucky put your leg to the floor and he stood up, kissing you again and you could taste your arousal all over his tongue. It was erotic yet intimate at the same time.
Bucky grabbed your hips and spun you around, you could feel his stiff member nudging you from behind as you both fought for dominance with your tongues. Bucky took a fistful of your hair and lifted your head back, once again trailing open-mouthed kisses to your throat. His fingers made their way down to your clit, rubbing it in circles furiously as if you weren’t soaked enough already from the way his tongue ingurgitated you.
You whimpered at his touch, the way he always knew how to light up every cell in your body with his touch was a wonder. It was as if your body had given itself completely to him and it was going to comply with whatever his touch tells you to do. Like the way you willingly bared your soul to him, you didn’t fight it at all, let the love and passion you had for each other consume you.
“You’re dripping all over my hand, doll.”
“I need you to fuck me now, please.” You were losing your mind with the way he was stimulating you, you needed to have him inside you now.
“Anything for you, baby.”
Bucky used your wetness to lubricate his member, making it easier for him to slide in. You leaned against the glass with your hands against it as he gripped your hip with his flesh hand and your shoulder with his vibranium one. Bucky pushed himself until he was fully sheathed and he groaned, “oh fuck, I ain’t gonna last long. Missed this tight cunt so much.”
Bucky gave you a few seconds to adjust to his size, and once you told him to move, he began with slow paces. You threw your head back and leaned against his shoulder as he kept thrusting in and out of you at a faster speed. Bucky moved his vibranium arm to your hip and wrapped his flesh hand around your jaw, directing it to his face so he could kiss you deeply.
The sounds of your skin slapping were salacious. Bucky felt you clenched around him and the coil in your stomach tightened. His fingers that were gripping your waist once again furiously rubbed your clit, igniting the fire in your muscles. Your cries grew louder as his rhythm began to falter, and the dam in you broke, your squirts streamed down your thighs, clouding your brain with pleasure.
Bucky started to get messy as he chased his own orgasm. He followed you to the place of euphoria, releasing himself deep inside you, panting your walls with hot white gush. Bucky leaned his forehead against the glass as he breathed heavily with his heart thumping against his chest. His weight on your back was comforting so you stayed there for a while until you both began to come down from your highs.
Bucky pulled out of you and his orgasm ran down your thighs, following yours. You turned around to face him and kiss him again. “That was fucking amazing,” Bucky said as he cleaned you up.
“I should be the one doing that, I wasn’t the one who just came home from a one month mission,” you retorted as you watched him going down to scrub your thighs where your juices were sticking on your skin.
“Well, now that I’m here, let me take care of my girl, will ya?”
You only chuckled and eventually, you both helped rinsed each other off. Once the shower was done, Bucky dried you with a towel and carried you to your bed, which he had yet to sleep on since it got here.
Life was a funny thing. Sometimes it dragged you down to hell, making you question if you had ever committed such a heinous crime in your previous life that cost you such misery in your present. But then, slowly but surely, the journey that you had to endure, led you to your fate, for better or for worse.
You couldn’t change where you had been and what you had done, but you could choose how you were going to redeem yourself and how you were going to spend the remaining years of your life now. You didn’t know much about your future as an Avenger. Hell, you were barely an Avenger, to begin with, but eventually, when you were ready, you knew there’d be nothing too big to overcome because you had Bucky by your side to walk through the storm with.
You didn’t have the privilege to believe in mystical things such as lucky stars but you were going to thank whatever was out there for the invisible string that tied you to Bucky.

I ended up being inspired by the magical flower shop AU I wrote last August, but that’s not necessary to read to understand this fic. Since tumblr is still having issues with links, I won’t include the link here but if you’re interested in that one, it’s Chapter 27 of AU-gust
As always, this fic can be found on my ao3!
Roses and Rowan
It’s storming when Bucky drives past Ravenspoint’s limits. The rain is coming down hard enough that he almost misses the sign for the little town in all the gloom, but then there’s a flash of lightning, illuminating the foreboding faces of the town patriarchs glaring down at those who would dare enter their town. Bucky shivers, resolutely turning away as he continues on his way.
He’s not here for them anyway. The patriarchs are long dead, their only descendants long since fled. There’s another flash of lightning, this time illuminating the hill off to the left and the old manor on the hilltop. From what little bit he can see through the storm, it looks like it was once a stately mansion but it’s falling into disrepair now. Bucky blinks and suddenly he can see the golden glimmer of the wards around the whole hill, sealing the house and grounds off from the would-be adventurers brave enough to test their mettle against the ghosts of Rosewood Manor.
Another shiver runs down his spine. The magic is strangely familiar, though he can’t place where he might have seen it before. He blinks again and the golden glimmer of the wards disappears from his view. “Spooky,” Bucky mutters. In the passenger seat, Alpine mraows her agreement. He reaches over and scratches under her chin, grinning when she purrs loud enough to drown out the music coming from the car speakers.
They pull into town a few minutes later, only knowing it by the stoplight Bucky just barely manages to make out through the sheets of rain pounding down. He would have missed it otherwise, the storm too heavy and the buildings too dark to see in the night. Ravenspoint is a small town with a population of only three thousand people, exactly one stoplight, and two streets that run the length of town, connected by a series of smaller cross streets. It’s exactly the last place Bucky ever thought he would find himself and yet here he is, searching for someone who had made it clear he didn’t want to be found.
“What am I doing, Alpine?” he asks the cat. “He told me he didn’t want me to come after him.”
Alpine can’t respond but she rolls over, exposing her belly to him, and he gets the sense of reassurance through their bond.
“I know,” he responds. “Tellin’ people he wants to be left alone when that’s usually the last thing he wants. But let’s be real here, this place is pretty far off the beaten track.”
Another pulse of reassurance.
“Well if you ask me—” the helper figment starts to say.
“I didn’t,” Bucky interrupts before it can say anything else. Damn figment’s been more trouble than it’s worth this whole trip. “Where’s the turn?”
The figment gives him a sullen look. “In five hundred yards, off to the right.”
Even as the figment says it, Bucky spots the glowing lights of the shop in the distance. He slows down and pulls over into one of the parking spots off the street, peering up through the rain at the shop sign above the door.
“Bluebells and Belladonnas,” he reads. “He always did like alliteration.”
“Great,” the figment says waspishly. “Can I go now? I got a hot—”
Bucky flicks his fingers and the figment disappears back to whatever dimension figments come from. Alpine flicks her tail lazily, giving off a sense of amusement and a little bit of hunger. Bucky laughs and scratches her chin again.
“Yeah, I would’ve let you eat it if it wouldn’t have given you indigestion,” he says. “’nother couple of minutes. I’m sure he has fresh tuna for you.”
He sighs and looks at the shop again. The sign on the front says it’s closed but there are lights on inside both in the shop itself and in the apartment above the shop, telling him that the owner is probably still working.
“So what’re you doing sitting out here?” he asks himself. He gives another baleful look at the stormy clouds and the rain still pouring down, groans, and then shrugs his hood up over his head. Nothing for it. The rain isn’t supposed to let up for another couple of hours and Bucky doesn’t feel like sitting in the car that long.
“You gonna be good out here?” he asks Alpine. She blinks slowly at him. That’s a yes, then.
Quick as he can, he gets out and dashes for the cover the awning provides. Once there, he throws his hood back and then knocks on the door. He waits about a minute before knocking again, this time a lot louder. It takes a moment before he sees a person-shaped blob behind the water-streaked glass. He knocks for a third time. The person gets larger as they move closer and then the door unlocks and swings open with a wave of the person’s hand.
“What—”
“You know,” Bucky says, stepping over the threshold. He bites back a shiver as a wave of magic washes over him, verifying that he has no ill intent. “You are a hard person to find.”
“Yeah, some people would take that as a hint,” Tony Stark states flatly, crossing his arms over his chest as he glares at Bucky.
~
Bucky is born with the ability to see magic. Or, at least, that’s the sfigmentlest way to explain it, if not the most accurate. Just about everyone can “see” magic but what they see are actually just the effects of magic—what was produced or what was done. Bucky has the ability to actually see the threads of magic. It’s a Barnes family gift, although none of the Barnes mages have had this ability in nearly two centuries. Bucky is the first in a very long time and because of that, he ends up having to go to school rather than being trained at home by the family mage (also known as Ma to Bucky and his sister).
It's at school that he meets his best friend, Stevie, and Stevie’s other best friend, Tony. Tony is a bit of an oddball, not that Bucky and Steve are incredibly popular either. Steve should be popular because of his dragon heritage and the power that brings him but he comes into his inheritance late and has a strong sense of morality and that gets him into trouble, more often than not. And Bucky just ends up following behind him.
But Tony—Tony is hard to pin down. He has incredible amounts of power, which is unusual in a mage from the Jarvis line. He’s a lot younger than most of the other kids, which isn’t so unusual for people with a lot of power—Bucky can think of a couple examples off the top of his head of people who went to school early because of their powers—but all those people went to school early because they didn’t have control, and Tony is nothing if not controlled. He doesn’t much look like either of his parents and the way he acts sometimes… it’s clear that he’s been through a lot, is all.
It’s not until their fourth year that Bucky starts putting the pieces together, and it starts when he finds out that Tony doesn’t actually get his powers from the Jarvis line but from the Carbonell line instead. He wasn’t supposed to overhear that but he and Steve had gotten in trouble again and were sitting outside the Headmistress’s office while she finished up a meeting with the Jarvises.
That’s when he’d heard it: “The Carbonell magic is strong in Tony,” the Headmistress had said, and that had been all Bucky had heard as the pieces had started falling into place. It had always puzzled Bucky how Tony’s magic, so suited to big things, had come from the Jarvises, both of whom were more skilled in household charms and enchantments, but if Tony was adopted… Adoption was rare in magical families, as magic was so often tied to filial lines, but it wasn’t unheard of, and that explained so much about Tony.
He spends some time in the library after that, researching the Carbonells. They’re an old line, originating in Italy, before coming to the Americas in the late sixteenth century. They’re known for producing powerful mages with the exact same proficiency in metallurgy that Tony’s always demonstrated. The last of them, Maria, had married one of the Starks, a newer family with a proficiency in elemental magics—another of Tony’s skills, Bucky realizes—and that’s where the trail goes cold. He never finds another mention of the Carbonells, or the Starks for that matter, in any of the old history books.
But there has to be more to the story, Bucky knows. Because there’s Tony, who looks just like Maria Carbonell, and that means there has to be more. However, he never brings it up. That’s Tony’s story, and if he doesn’t want to tell them, he doesn’t have to.
He never stops hoping that Tony will, though.
~
Tony is looking at him now, eyes dark and arms crossed. Bucky has changed into a pair of sweats and a t-shirt he’d brought with him as his clothes had ended up drenched, even from just the short run from the car and back out to grab Alpine and his travel bag. His clothes are drying by the fire now as Alpine explores the apartment, sniffing around curiously. Bucky is curious as well, but he’s been so busy drinking in the sight of Tony after almost two years of nothing that he hasn’t taken the time yet to look around.
“What are you doing here, Bucky?” Tony asks eventually.
He shrugs. “I came to find you.”
“Thought I made it obvious I didn’t want to be found.”
“I thought we had unfinished business,” Bucky says quietly. He gazes at Tony steadily until Tony squirms and turns away, busying himself with the coffeepot on the counter. He prepares two cups of coffee, one with more sugar than most people can stand and one with more milk than coffee, and hands the one with milk to Bucky.
Bucky takes one sip and blinks in surprise. “This is decaf,” he says.
“Yeah, and?”
“Tony, you don’t drink decaf. You called it the devil’s brew.”
There’s a hint of a smile lurking around the corners of Tony’s mouth as he raises his own cup to his mouth. “I’d forgotten about that.”
“Seems like you’ve forgotten a lot of things.”
“Like what?”
“Like how I promised you I’d follow you anywhere.”
Tony stills for a moment before he puts his cup back down on the counter. “Bucky—”
“Tony, why?” Bucky asks, not even bothering to hide the anguish in his voice. It’s how he’s felt every day since Tony disappeared two years ago. “You told me we’d talk the next day, only I woke up to find you’d run. Did I push too hard? Was it not what you wanted?” He stops, frustrated and upset, and scrubs his hand over his face.
“Bucky, no,” Tony says, dismayed. He moves forward, taking Bucky’s hands between his. “It wasn’t you. You have to believe me. It was never you.”
“Then what was it?”
Tony bites his lip, hesitating. Even without using his Sight, Bucky can see golden magic swirling under Tony’s skin, pooling at his hands where they’re touching Bucky’s. He blinks and now he can see his own magic, cool silver, gathering at his fingertips, aching to reach out and touch Tony’s. Their magic has always been compatible, always stronger when they’re together, even before Bucky figured out his complicated feelings for Tony.
“Doll?” he asks, immediately regretting the pet name when it makes Tony flinch. He doesn’t take it back though. This is who he is, a little old-fashioned and a little flirty and a lot in love with Tony Stark.
“It’s me,” Tony eventually admits, looking down at their hands as though he can see the magic too. “I got scared. It’s—I’m not who you think I am.”
“Not what? Not a Jarvis? Tony, I’ve known that for ten years.”
Tony’s head jerks up so fast Bucky’s own neck aches in sympathy. “What did you say?”
“Tony, I know you’re not a Jarvis,” Bucky says again, patiently. He’s never admitted this to anyone before, let alone Tony. He can afford to be careful right now.
“How did you know that?” Tony breathes. “We’ve never told anyone.”
“Except for the Headmistress,” Bucky points out. “You prob’ly had to tell her so she could help you with your abilities.”
“We did,” Tony whispers.
He shrugs. “Stevie and I overheard her one time. She said your magic came from the Carbonell line. I got curious, thought it might explain why you and the Jarvises are so different, so I looked it up.”
“You didn’t think that was invading my privacy?”
The words are harsh but Tony doesn’t look upset. He looks—hopeful, almost, like he wants to believe Bucky knows everything about him and doesn’t judge him for it. It makes Bucky bold and he steps forward, right into Tony’s space, as he tugs one of his hands free and uses it to tuck one of Tony’s curls behind his ear, fingers brushing against his cheek.
“You are a puzzle I’ve only ever wanted to solve,” Bucky murmurs, bowing his head to rest his forehead against Tony’s. His hand cups Tony’s cheek for the briefest moment and then falls to his shoulder. Tony closes his eyes and inhales shakily. “But the moment the trail went cold, I stopped looking. It didn’t seem right to keep digging.”
“What did you find?” Tony asks.
“Two names: Howard Stark and Maria Carbonell, that’s it.”
Tony nods. “Those were my parents.”
“Were?”
“Could be are. I don’t know where they went after they left me, but I stopped calling them mine the moment they were gone.”
“What happened?” He feels Tony tense under his hand and quickly adds, “If you want to tell me. Don’t feel like you have to.”
“No, it’s—I want to,” Tony says, sounding frustrated. The space between his brows furrows in irritation. “I’ve just never told anyone and—I’m not sure I’m ready to tell the full story yet. It’s a lot.”
“Whatever you’re ready for, then. And when you’re ready for the rest, I’ll be right here to listen.”
Tony takes a deep breath, steadying himself. “I was born at Rosewood Manor,” he says quietly.
“That place outside of town?”
“Mmhmm. That’s my magic you probably saw guarding it.”
Bucky sucks in a sharp breath. “Tony, that place looks like it hasn’t had anyone living there for fifteen years.”
“Over twenty actually. I was three when—when that happened.”
“You were three? And you had that kind of control?”
Tony laughs humorlessly. “Believe me, that night I had no control at all.” He falls silent. Bucky waits for more, but Tony seems to be done talking for tonight, so he turns his head and kisses the corner of Tony’s mouth instead.
“Thank you for telling me,” he says.
Tony grimaces. “Not like I told you much of anything.”
“You told me what you were comfortable with. Believe me, doll, after two years of nothing—”
“You keep doing that,” Tony interrupts. “Calling me doll.”
Bucky hesitates. “I thought you liked it when I did that.”
Tony looks away, a bitter twist to his mouth. “I left.”
“Yeah…”
“I left right after you kissed me because I was scared and couldn’t face up to what was going on between us even though I promised we’d talk.”
Bucky waits, sure that if he stays silent, Tony will explain further. It’s a trick that he’s used in the past and it’s always worked. Sure enough, after another couple moments:
“You know, I was so sure you were dating Steve? Let me finish please,” Tony says calmly, holding up a hand when Bucky opens his mouth. “You don’t know what it was like. I might have met Steve first but it was so clear that you two were a lot closer than I would ever be with him. So yes, I was convinced you two were dating and that I was alone in my feelings and when I found out I wasn’t, I panicked. I thought it was Tony Jarvis you liked, not—”
“I like you,” Bucky interrupts, unable to keep hearing Tony talk about how he’d thought Bucky wasn’t serious about him, when he thinks maybe it’s the only thing he’s ever been serious about. “I like you as Tony Jarvis, Tony Carbonell, Tony Stark, or just plain Tony.”
“Like?” Tony asks shyly.
Bucky grins and kisses the other corner of Tony’s mouth. “Do you think I would have kept searching for you for two years if I didn’t still like you?”
Tony leans back for a moment, searching his eyes for something before he eventually says, “And what about Tony Barnes?”
Bucky’s heart about stops. He wheezes out, “You—”
“It’s not—I needed a name when I came back to Ravenspoint. I didn’t want anyone to know who I was and it’s a small town. People know every other name I go by, but—I didn’t think you’d mind or I wouldn’t—”
Bucky can’t stop himself anymore. He frames Tony’s face in his hands and kisses him soundly. It’s closed-mouthed and chaste and it’s still the best damn kiss he’s ever had, next to the only other time he kissed Tony. Tony’s hands flutter in the air for a second before wrapping around Bucky’s waist, clutching him to him.
“I love you calling yourself by my name,” he says hoarsely, pulling away long enough to get the words out before he kisses Tony again. “And one day, I swear I’ll give you that name for real, forever and always.” This time, it’s Tony who whfigmenters and kisses him again, sucking Bucky’s tongue into his mouth as Bucky’s hands slide back into his hair to hold him right where he wants him.
“Wait,” Tony pants, struggling against Bucky’s grip to move away. Bucky lets him go reluctantly, gratified when Tony only moves a couple inches. “How did you find me?”
“Your magic,” Bucky tells him, trailing kisses across every inch of his face. “It’s been callin’ out to me since the day you left, leavin’ me a trail to follow.”
“Lucky me,” Tony whispers.
And as Bucky kisses him again, unable to resist for a single second, he thinks to himself, No. Lucky me.

BuckTony Becoming Cat Dads
A/N: Hey there, guys, time for some mid-afternoon headcanons, it seems. I was in the middle of writing Lightning, but then I really just wanted some Bucky and Tony fluff and thought there was no better way than imagining them as cat dads because they definitely would be 😌😌😌 Anyways, so here we go, and I hope you enjoy!!
The decision came randomly one night, when Bucky was out late and Tony was complaining that the house gets way too lonely without Bucky there with him.
Being Bucky’s boyfriend, Tony had gotten used to almost never being alone. Unless, of course, Bucky decided to have a night out with Steve and Sam that Tony apparently wasn’t invited to.
Bucky had chuckled softly and kissed his forehead as he took his jacket off. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. Maybe we can just get a little puppy or something, then he can keep you company when I’m not around so that you don’t have to feel so lonely anymore.” There was a sarcastic edge to his tone and he was mostly joking, but it was also something he had been thinking a lot about recently.
Tony stayed quiet for a moment, thinking, before saying. “What if we got a kitten?” Bucky stopped what he was doing as he turned back around to look at Tony, who was turned on the couch to be able to peer back at him. “You mean like...actually get a pet?”
Tony grinned as he heard the barely bit back excitement hidden in Bucky’s voice. Now there was no way he could say no. “I mean, yeah, babe. If you seriously want to.”
He got up and walked over to Bucky, taking his hands in his. “Let’s get a fur baby, baby.” Bucky’s whole face lights up with excitement and he wraps his arms around Tony, pulling him close and kissing all over his face.
“Yes!” He said, and Tony smiled at him fondly, grabbing the back of Bucky’s neck gently and pushing their foreheads together. What they both knew but wouldn’t dare say out loud is that part of the excitement of this moment is that it was another step forward. Another reassurance that they were in this for the long run. If they went through with this, they would be tied together even more so than before, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
It was about a week later, at a nearby pet store, that they found her.
Bucky and Tony had been to a different store a few days earlier, but none of the little ones really caught their eye, there wasn’t really any connection.
But the both of them had a good feeling about this place. A worker led them back to where all of the kittens were, allowing them to take a look around. A couple of the less shy ones ran up to them and pawed at their legs or rolled onto their back for a tummy rub.
Bucky crouched down and picked up a mouse toy with a feather on the end, waving it in front of one of them and catching their attention as they pounced at the toy. Bucky laughed softly as he played with them. Tony watched, smiling happily at his boyfriend. Then something behind Bucky caught his eye.
Tony turned around and saw that Bucky was keeping his metal arm behind his back. He didn’t want to accidentally hurt any of the kittens with it. But then there was a little all white kitten up on their hind legs, grabbing hold of Bucky’s black and gold hand, trying to chew on the metal fingers.
Bucky looked beside him as he saw Tony kneel down and reach behind him, just now noticing the feel of tiny paws on his back. “Hmm?”
Tony picked up the little kitten and sat down criss-cross, holding the little ball of fur in his lap. Bucky sat beside him, smiling. Tony smiled as the kitten nipped at his fingers playfully and clung to his hand. “This little one was trying to attach themselves to your left arm there, babe.” He told Bucky
The worker who was back there with them walked over and saw the kitten they were with. “That’s Alpine. She’s been with us for a few weeks. She doesn’t really warm up to people like that. She’s social with the other kittens, but doesn’t seem to have much trust with other humans. The ones that dropped her off said that she had been through a lot in her first few months. But it seems like she definitely likes you two.”
Bucky and Tony shared a look as Alpine tried to climb up onto Bucky’s shoulder. “We’ll take her.” They stated at the same time, grinning at each other. Bucky looked down at Alpine and helped her up onto his shoulder and she made a small noise at him, leaning over to lick his cheek. Tony chuckled and reached up to scratch her head gently.
They spent the rest of the afternoon completing the adoption process and spoiling their new little companion. They bought everything she needed. A cat carrier, bowls, litter box, bed, toys, collar, tags, even a leash in case it was ever needed. And then a few extras like a scratching post and a cat tree.
They headed home, Bucky driving as Tony held the carrier she was in, in his lap. About halfway home, Bucky called the vet and set up an appointment to get her a checkup and any needed vaccinations at her current age.
They got home and got everything inside, keeping her in the carrier until they at least had her litter box, bed, and food and water bowls set up. As soon as they took her out and set her down in the middle of the living room, she was running around, exploring her new home.
They followed her around for a little while, just to make sure that everything she shouldn’t get into was out of her reach, before heading back into the living room to get everything else put together or put away.
Tony was getting her tags attached to her collar while Bucky was putting together the cat tree when Alpine was suddenly on Tony’s back, climbing up to his shoulder and nipping at his ear.
Tony smiled and scooped her up into his arms, rubbing under her chin. “Hey there, little one. You’re just in time. I just finished up your collar.” She meowed at him as he looped the collar around her neck and snapped it together, making sure it wasn’t too tight on her.
Alpine shook her head, making the bell and metal tags jingle together, which made her roll over on Tony’s lap as she tried to paw at where the sound was coming from.
Tony and Bucky chuckled and cooed at her, Bucky leaning over to kiss the side of Tony’s head before leaning down and kissing the top of Alpine’s head.
Tony looked over at Bucky as Alpine got down to go play and explore some more and smiled at him, his eyes shining with love and affection and happiness. “I love you so much. You make me so happy.”
Bucky matched the look in his lover’s eyes, tears of joy springing up that he tried to blink away. “The same to you, my love. I never thought I could ever be this happy. Have such an amazing life.” He pressed their foreheads together. “But you proved me wrong. I love you so much.”
Tony grabbed Bucky’s hands and twined their fingers together, leaning forward and kissing his beautiful boyfriend full of love. Bucky returned the loving kiss, squeezing Tony’s hands gently. They pulled back after a moment, foreheads still together, looking into each other’s eyes. Neither of them could stop smiling.
Suddenly their attention was grabbed by a small meow of distress coming from beside them. They turned and laughed as they saw Alpine hanging off the side of the coffee table, trying to climb all the way on top of it but not finding a good grip to do so, so she was instead stuck there, seeming to be too afraid of the half foot drop back to the ground.
Bucky grabbed hold of her and gently pried her paws off of the table, lifting her up and holding her above his head, bringing her back down to rub his nose on hers gently and she made a noise at him and pawed at his face.
Bucky leaned back on the couch and set her down on his chest where she curled up and closed her eyes, purring happily as Tony rested his head on Bucky’s shoulder, Bucky’s arm going across the back of the couch behind Tony. And there they stayed into the evening, now a little family, happier than any of them had ever dreamed they would be.
A/N: How was this, guys?? I loved writing this so much, I literally love these two together with my whole heart. A Winter Soldier's Pet
He was doing this for Bucky. And really, Tony wouldn't care. He actually said that as long as they didn't bring home an elephant or a giraffe, he didn't care about more animals. They certainly had the space for it, and Stephen could briefly communicate with them so any new pets could live in harmony with the others. Athena and Emir we're well behaved but if the new pet didn't understand, that would be potential chaos.
But it was possible so that was how Steve found himself at the nearest pet shelter. He wanted to get Bucky a companion that could help him, especially when he wasn't there, and considered a dog. Bucky loved Athena and was more relaxed when interacting with her, but every dog he looked at didn't seem the right fit. They were too hyper, too small, or just a little too old. Bucky wasn't a fan of small dogs anyway. In fact, Steve was pretty sure no one in the tower cared for them. Flynn was honestly the closest thing one could get to a small dog and while he was cute, he was glad the fox stuck with Quill. Because of the Celestial's powers, the fox would forever be a baby, and he currently still had some extreme separation anxiety.
If Quill was gone, the kit would loudly voice his displeasure. It had gotten a lot better...but it was also a good thing he was cute and behaved when Quill was home.
So he went to check out the cats instead. Bucky liked Tibbs too and even caught the two taking a nap on the couch before. Steve had trouble when looking at the cats as well. None of them gave him the feeling that they would be good for his boyfriend, and so with some disappointment, he was about to leave when he saw one more cat. A snow white one that was lazing about on a cat tower and looking directly at him with a disinterested expression and Steve knew that was what he was looking for.
"I'll take that one." He says to the volunteer walking with him.
"Sure...but I have to warn you that she isn't very social. She likes to do her own thing."
"I don't think that will be a problem." Steve says. "Is she ready to go home right now?"
"Yup! She's been fixed, microchipped, and caught up on all of her shots." The girl says with a smile. "Do you have any other pets at home?"
"Uhh…" Steve couldn't tell her about the tiger and wolf, so he just stretched the truth a little. "A couple of cats, a dog, and a fox. They belong to others though on different floors so it won't be a problem."
"Sounds good! I'll get you the paperwork and something to take her home in!"
That had been it. The girl walked away to get the paperwork as well as a temporary carrier, and Steve pulled out the money he would need to pay the adoption fee. When the volunteer came back, she walked into the cat room to retrieve the cat and put her in the carrier, and to Steve's relief, the cat didn't seem to mind. So far she seemed a lot like Tibbs, which was just what Bucky needed.
The girl came back out after closing the carrier - and the door to the room - and led Steve over to a table where she set the paperwork. "Just need you to sign here. These other papers are for your records in case she gets lost or sick. Did you want to give her a different name?"
Steve looks at her. "What's her name?"
"We called her Alpine." The girl answers with a smile and Steve shakes his head.
"I think we'll keep the name."
"Great!" When Steve finishes with the paperwork and he hands over the money, she motions toward the carrier. "She's all yours! Thank you for adopting!"
Steve thanks her in return and takes the carrier after the volunteer says her last goodbye, and he carefully carries Alpine out to the car. Bucky had no idea this was happening since Steve wanted to surprise him, and the man was napping on the couch when Steve left for the animal shelter anyway. He did stop by a pet store on the way back to the tower so he could get a few essentials for Alpine, and then drove home after offering her a small handful of treats. Whatever else they could get her, Steve figured he and/or Bucky could get later.
Alpine did meow nervously during the last few minutes of the ride, but settled when Steve pulled into the garage and turned off the car. He grabbed the pet supplies out of the back, got out, and then circled the car to get Alpine out of the passenger seat before he headed for the elevator. Steve hoped this wouldn't backfire on him and that Bucky would love her like he assumed he would, but he wasn't too worried. Bucky really liked all the pets. Even Flynn when he wasn't crying.
"You'll like it here. Our floor is a lot bigger than the room you were in and you don't have to share it with any cats." Steve tells Alpine who meows curiously through the holes of the carrier she was sticking her nose through. "Unless Tibbs warms up to you. Which he probably will if he likes Goose, so he might come to visit."
Normally Steve would have felt ridiculous talking to an animal, but it was the norm with all the animals that were a part of the family. Everyone talked to the pets so he didn't feel insane at the thought. There were definitely weirder things.
Steve looks toward the doors when the elevator pings, and he steps out onto the floor when they open and he sets the carrier and bag down. Bucky was absent from the couch so either he was elsewhere on the floor or was upstairs.
"Buck?" Steve calls out.
"Yeah?" The soldier walks out of the kitchen with a piece of peanut butter toast in his hand and he stops when he sees the carrier. "What's that?"
"I... thought she might help. When I'm not home you know?" Steve says as Bucky moves closer after putting his toast down. "I've seen how Emir helps Scott sometimes. Tibbs, Athena... I'd say Flynn but I think Quill helps him more-"
He was rambling. Steve didn't ramble. But he finally got himself to stop when Bucky crouched down to open the carrier and Alpine poked her head out to examine her new surroundings before the new human. Even with his vibranium arm, Bucky was gentle when he reached out to scratch under her chin, and Alpine purred contently. Steve knew he chose correctly then. Even though the volunteer said Alpine wasn't very social, she took to Bucky straight away and he even smiled.
"You know this means that Tibbs will be down to visit now right?" Bucky asks and Steve laughs.
"Yeah, I know. You like her?" Steve asks.
Bucky looks up at him and smiles. "So far."
He gently scoops up the cat and Steve watches with surprise. He didn't expect Alpine to let that happen. At least not right away.
"Want some tuna?" Bucky asks her.
"Bucky, I bought her cat food." Steve says with a fond huff.
"She's in a new place. She deserves tuna."
"Fair enough," the captain laughs.
The tuna had really been what solidified Bucky and Alpine's rapidly forming bond. The winter soldier opened a can of tuna for her and set her on the counter to eat it, and she made quick work of it before batting the empty can off the counter. She then jumped down after it to bat it around some more, and when she finally got bored of it, she wandered around to explore her new home.
In the meantime, Bucky cleaned up the can, ate his toast, and then he and Steve set up her litter box and food bowls which were all filled with the proper fillings. Alpine walked over just as they finished to investigate her food and water bowls. She drank some water before Bucky took her upstairs to their bathroom to show her the litter box, and when she started to use it, they went back down to the living room to watch tv.
"She's adjusting faster than I thought." Steve says.
"You never told me her name. I asked you about it a little bit ago." Bucky points out.
"Alpine. The volunteers named her and I liked it."
Bucky nods. "It fits her."
"The next step is to introduce her to the other pets." Steve says.
"We'll give her a day or two to get settled."
"If Tibbs doesn't find her first. You know he has the run of the tower."
Bucky laughed and they settled onto the couch to watch tv, and to their surprise, Alpine walked down and over to them. Even more surprising was that she jumped up onto Bucky's lap and curled up for a nap. She purred contently as Bucky slowly petted her with his flesh hand and Steve wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
"Thanks Steve. She's...she's great." Bucky says softly.
"I think she knows that she's needed. I know that despite what you claim, you don't like being alone. I thought she would help when you're not on a mission with me." Steve explains.
"Yeah, well, I can't keep crawling into bed with Mom and Dad." Bucky jokes.
"You know they don't mind. You'll even be able to take Alpine with you." Steve laughs.
"True. They're cooking dinner for everyone by the way."
"You know who's cooking and what?"
"Tony's making his lasagna." Bucky says.
"We better get up there early then. Both for a chance to get dinner and so we can talk to Stephen about talking to Alpine." Steve points out.
Which they did a couple of hours later. They left Alpine behind so she could get used to her new home and they went upstairs for dinner. Steve first approached Stephen to talk to him about the new pet while Bucky helped get the dishes out, and the sorcerer actually chuckled. Stephen and Tony were both unfazed with the news, and Stephen agreed to talk to Alpine and the other animals once the new feline was settled so that they knew of each other and lived peacefully. He actually was able to talk to the other pets that night since Emir and Flynn came up with Quill, Scott, and Cassie, so they knew the new cat wasn't an intruder.
When Steve and Bucky went downstairs and eventually crawled into bed for the night, Alpine hopped up to join them. She curled up at the foot of the bed with a happy purr and that answered one of Steve's questions about what they would need for her. They certainly wouldn't be bothering with a bed.
"What about you?" Bucky mumbles sleepily.
"Seeing that she helps you will be enough for me." Steve answers softly. "I'll always do what I can to make life better for you. For us . I'm with you--"
"Till the end of the line." Bucky finishes with a whisper before finally falling asleep.
It was their promise to each other after all.
