Good god (tw: some light undertone themes of suicidal thoughts and self destruction/harm) but with lots of comfort to come so dont worryyyy
Tumblr media
The rain poured down the hero’s face, they had their chin tilted up high towards the light grey clouds as if the mist surrounding them was suffocating. Their eyes were closed, but that didn’t stop the pelting droplets from finding their way under the hero’s eyelids.
It felt somewhat like relief, the cool water soaking through every single layer of their clothes. It eased their mind and their wounds, washed the blood from their chin and nose.
It stilled such a busy world.
On the other hand, the hero was freezing. It must’ve been at least six hours since they had had their arms wrenched behind their back and duck taped together to keep them bound to a school yard post. A singular piece covering their lips to keep them from shouting for help.
It was so simple compared to the intricate traps they had been stuck within before. Nonetheless, for some reason it was also the hardest to escape.
Partially, Hero knew it was because they had no will to. They had gone through the darkened alley behind the school knowing they were going to get jumped. They had let themselves be beaten and hogtied, they had accepted a concussion and a busted nose.
Hero knew if they were ever to talk this out with the Agency’s therapist there would be words strung out around the concept of ‘goodness’ and ‘greatness’.
Hero didn’t feel all that good—let alone great.
Hero didn’t feel anything except exhausted. So they had slumped back against the post, legs sprawled out against the asphalt, haphazardly painted with basketball gym lines.
Their arms were burning from the awkward position and consistent strain and the hero ignored it all the same. It was the weekend, so there would be no concerned teachers to save them and definitely no kids out to play in this weather. And sure, if they wanted, they could break free—they were a hero after all—but for now they just sat.
Unwilling and unwanting of any form of further freedom as the hypothermic chill coating their skin slowly reached into their bones.
“To freeze or not to freeze…” Hero’s eyes snapped open at the sudden familiar voice coming from behind them. “That is the question~” Villain’s head poked out from around the post where the hero lay still bound.
They stepped around to face the hero straight on, crouching down to meet at their level. “Sucker for punishment? Or are you just really too weak to get yourself out of some lousy tape?”
The villain grinned, even through the heavy rain the hero could practically feel the other’s heat and see their sultry eyes. They squirmed, suddenly all too uncomfortable in their position as they tried to push themselves up into a standing position.
“What? Cat got your tongue?” The criminal laughed, watching their nemesis wriggle helplessly and increasingly more desperately against their bonds. They reached up, one hand delicately cupping the hero’s face as the other ripped the duct tape off their lips in one swift movement.
Hero gasped mostly in pain, slightly due to their racing heartbeat. “Fuck— Villain—”
Gently the villain’s thumb brushed over the hero’s bottom lip, wiping the blood away with the rain water that tainted everything it could touch. Hero took in another deep breath, collecting themselves from a moment ago before looking into the villain’s eyes again.
“Need some help?”
The crime-stopper wanted to shake their head no, they wanted to spit at the villain and break free on their own, instead they mumbled an incoherent form of yes and let themselves be brought to their feet in a single pull. The villain’s hands did not leave the hero’s sides even after they were steady on their feet and Hero couldn’t help but notice just how cold they truly were without the villain’s warmth.
The villain didn’t question them a second time, once they were sure the hero could stand on their own they reached one hand into their pocket for their smaller knife. Flipping it open while their other hand still rested against the hero’s hip, wrapping their armed hand around the hero’s body to cut away the remaining tape from their arms.
And for the few seconds their bodies stayed pressed together, Hero wondered if this was close enough to be considered a hug. Then, in a sickening moment where all of the blood rushed from the hero’s head to their now free arms, they swayed and collapsed against the villain.
The criminal had barely enough time to catch them before the hero relaxed their weight completely into Villain’s chest. Head pressed into the crook or the villain’s neck, Hero’s icy fingers clawed at the fabric of their nemesis’ suit with what little energy they had left.
Hero was searching for heat, they had forgotten just exactly how badly their body craved it when they had let themselves rot against the post. Now that the villain was here though, they needed to warm up and they only wanted to while trapped in the villain’s embrace.
“Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay, Hero. I’ve got you, you’re safe.” Villain reassured them, voice soft and inviting as they shifted their arms around to help walk their nemesis back to their car. “Do you know how long you’ve been out here?”
Hero took their first few shuffling steps with the villain’s support, making up for a lot of their weight. Their eyes flicked to the villain’s worried expression, “A few hours.” But they couldn’t hold their gaze.
They were ashamed now. They had been caught in their own self-destruction and saved by their mortal enemy. The person they fought tooth and nail almost every single day for the past two years.
Now that person was helping them into their car and out of the rain, where initially the hero had hoped to stay forever. How embarrassing.
The villain didn’t say much else, only answering with a curt nod before returning their focus to bearing the hero’s weight in their steps. It was safe to say the hero hadn’t expected to be as weak as they truly were and that maybe if the villain had never shown up, they wouldn’t have been able to get away.
That was worrisome. Worrisome enough to dry the hero’s mouth up in a second and send shivers down their spine.
Villain reached out, hand grabbing onto the passenger side door handle and they slowly opened it to reveal the inside of their beloved car Hero had heard about so many times in battle. Yet, they had barely even registered the walk from the school yard to the parking lot, let alone the fact that their enemy was actually helping them.
Hero looked to Villain, who gave them an assuring smile. “I’ll take care of you, or bring you straight home—no questions asked. Just don’t make me leave you out here any longer.”
That earned them a small smile.

Heroes vs. Villains : Octavinelle
Gender Neutral Reader x Octavinelle vs. Rielle Word Count: 1.5k
Summary: Woe to the Ramshackle Prefect, being caught up in the drama between the Disney Villains and their respective heroes. Octavinelle Version. ie. The Tweels' idea of fun is torture and an unsuspecting, red-headed, hero steps in to save the day
[PART 1] [PART 2]
Tumblr media
You were floating contentedly on a soft, yellow, raft. Enjoying the sun on your face and the gentle lap of the waves against your toes.
And then you were not.
And who was to blame for your sudden descent into the swirling, shadowed, riptides of the bay? Well, a pair of sharp smiles popping in and out of your water-logged vision was proof enough. Go swimming with Jade and Floyd, Azul had said. They’ll genuinely appreciate it, he’d said.
And what if they kill me? You’d said. Eat me? Drown me? Fill my swimsuit with sand and rocks, and then leave me at the bottom of the ocean?
Oh, they like you too much for that, he’d huffed, something sour and resigned twisting at his mouth. They may just… play with you a bit.
CLUNK CLUNK went the first of many stones as Floyd unloaded his mucky haul over your flailing shoulders. You could see the bubbles of his laughter swirling through the water, soon joined by the more subtle froth of Jade’s chuckles.
You were half-way through planning the best sermon to mortify Azul at your funeral when a strong pair of decidedly-not-eel-like arms wrapped around your torso and hauled you back to the surface.
“Are you alright?!” A pause as you hacked up a bucket’s worth of salt water all over your savior’s shoulders. “Well, clearly you’re not okay—but let’s just—I mean—I’ll take you back to shore!”
And so, you were returned to the warm, sandy, beach curtesy of a kind, sun kissed, stranger with a surprisingly good backstroke.
Once you had your feet properly back on the ground and had vomited mouthful after mouthful of murky water from your gut, you finally had a chance to observe your hero in all his glory.
He looked about your age, but there was a self-assuredness to him that would normally either speak of many years lived or many years catered to. Judging by his goofy but sugar-sweet smile and the swim trunks embroidered with what looked like actual gold threading, you were going to guess it was the latter. His eyes were as blue as the water he’d pulled you from, and lit with a mischievousness that was placid enough not to set your hackles on edge. The swoop of red hair atop his head was shockingly bright (and shockingly well styled, considering he’d also been submerged in that sticky seawater just moments before). Not even Ace’s awful mess of a hairdo could have prepared you for the blinding crimson locks curling softly against the breeze.
“Thanks,” you managed to wheeze out, hands on your knees and practically doubled over entirely. God, you were going to murder those stupid twins. Or at least dump all of Jade’s mushrooms down the toilet. And maybe get Grim to piss on Floyd’s basketball shoes if he wasn’t too much of a coward.
“Of course,” he smiled, gentle in the way that one may approach a spooked animal. Frankly it was a bit insulting, but perhaps it was just that having lived so long amidst your beloved, heathenish, classmates, politeness of any kind came across as suspect. “Do you need me to get the healer? Or—excuse me—the doctor? Yes?”
“I don’t think I’m that dead yet,” you mumbled and gave yourself a whack on the chest for good measure. “But I guess only time will tell, huh?”
Your savior looked properly startled, and you had to remind yourself once again that normal people did not laugh off horrific brushes with mortality. Normal people showed empathy, and compassion, and wouldn’t have dragged you to the bottom of the goddamn lagoon in the first place.
Sunshine-Boy shook himself out of whatever funk had swept through his brain quickly enough, and he stepped towards you with another one of those insanely luminescent smiles.
“Well, despite the unfortunate circumstances, it is my very great pleasure to meet you. My name is Rielle Tidal!” he beamed, and swooped into an odd sort of half-bow.  It looked very much like someone who’d only ever vaguely heard about the concept of a curtsy, and was trying to pull one for themselves. His lips quirked into a grin that was so wide and white it was practically seared into your retinas. “Youngest Prince of Atlantica.”
You just nodded, hoping it looked polite and not put-upon. At this point, you’d had more than enough of second princes, and crowned-princes, and so-rich-they-might-as-well-be-princes. Youngest princes probably wouldn’t be much better.
“A pleasure,” you huffed and spat a sea-soaked wad of hair from your mouth.
Rielle’s inhumanely radiant smile dimmed under your lack of enthusiasm and he tried again, shoving his hand back out for you to shake. You did, if only because his dejected expression made you feel like he’d caught you kicking puppies or something. You managed to gurgle your name out past your salt-slick tongue and the burning in your lungs. He repeated it slowly, carefully, like he was memorizing the way it felt in his mouth.
“Well then! Are you feeling a little better now?” he asked, genuine worry swimming in his blue eyes.
“I don’t think I’m drowning anymore,” you sighed, and gave one, last, proper, hack for good measure.
“That’s good at least!” he laughed. It was such a strange laugh—not in a bad way. Just… weirdly perfect. Tinkling like bells and so warm it nearly wiped away the heavy chill that had seeped into your limbs. The most perfectly-perfect laugh that you had ever head. The kind of sound that poets could write endlessly about. After spending months with people whose giggles sounded like the rumbling of chainsaws or the underscore of a horror movie, hearing something so lovely and normal was… unsettling.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw the tops of two very familiar heads crest above the waves.
You fought the very strong urge to stick your tongue out and flip them the bird.
Rielle noticed your change in focus and his sapphire eyes tracked out to the pair of twins bobbing up and down menacingly in the water.
“Are those your friends?” he asked.
“’‘Friends’ is a strong word,” you grit out.
“Is it?” he gaped. “Oh no! I’ve been using it all the time! Do you think I’ve been upsetting people?!”
You had to physically clap your jaw closed. Was this a real person? Actually? Could a creature so pure and bubbly actually exist in the same universe where someone like Azul could charge upwards of fifteen thaumarks for a single drink?
“I’m… sure you’re fine,” you placated.
Immediately he brightened. “Oh! That’s good! So can we be friends then?”
“You want to be friends. With me?” you deadpanned, shocked.
His cheeks bloomed a lovely shade of pink that somehow managed to not clash horrendously with his bottle-red hair.
“W-Well, maybe we could—”
“Awww~” came a horribly shrill, familiar, drawl. “Did Shrimpy make a new friend, hmm?”
“Now, Prefect,” followed an even worse voice. The one that had lulled you in once-upon-a-time with its deceptive politeness and professionalism. “You of all people should know how unfair it would be to attempt expanding your social circle further. What with all your commitments.”
“Who’s gonna’ scrub dishes with me, Shrimpy?” Floyd whined, draping himself over one shoulder. “Or make sure I get to basketball practice on time?”
“And what ever would we do without the Lounge’s most beloved executive assistant?” Jade hummed, pressing himself into the other.
“Suffer,” you spat, and Jade’s pointed smirk curled into a grin so sharp that you were a bit worried you were about to lose a chunk of your arm.
“Aw, see?” Floyd cried, tugging your closer to his soaking chest. “You don’t wanna’ be friends with this lil’ Shrimp, Princey. It’s mean.”
You fought the urge to bite his fingers. Prince Rielle was taking in the entire situation with a look of abject horror. And also… recognition? You could see his blue eyes narrow, as if in deep thought. And he was looking over Floyd and Jade’s ugly, snarling, mugs like if he squinted hard enough, maybe he could figure out just what exactly these two demon spawn were meant to be.
“Anways!” Jade smiled. “We ought to be going.”
“But you’re still soaked!” Rielle objected, turning back to you with a furrowed brow. “And you almost just drowned!”
“Ah. Did you?” Jade hummed, arching a brow at you. You stomped on his foot. He didn’t react.
“At least take this,” Rielle offered, rifling around in one of the discarded tote bags in the sand to produce a giant, fluffy towel. “And, uhm, maybe this too.” He pressed something small and silver into your hands. “To help brush your hair out, at least.”
“This is a fork,” you frowned.
“It’s a dinglehopper,” he corrected, looking horribly confused. And you decided to take back all the nice things you’d been thinking about him earlier.
“Well, thank you then. I think,” you huffed, accepting the ‘dinglehopper’ with as much grace as you could.
“I’ll be seeing you!” Rielle chirped, as Jade took one arm and Floyd took the other—bodily hauling you in the other direction.
“No, I don’t think you will,” Jade beamed, looking positively venomous.

I love how every tmnt series does Kraang
Like they're space aliens with a mothership that always look like brains, have intricate exoskeleton devices often to protect their extremely delicate bodies, and overtake/possess people.
You'd think something that specific would somewhat limit how they're portrayed, or at least have all variations be extremely similar to each other, but you could not be more wrong.
Like in 87 they're the most pathetic villains ever. Like they are not a threat. You could play basketball with those mother fuckers. In 03 they're actually good guys, except that one bastard. But they hate him too. In 12 they're a middling threat that starts off serious, but as the heros become more skilled they're much easier to deal with. They also have physic powers and are responsible for a bunch of mutations, which came from nowhere. Then in Rise they like, almost end the world in like, an hour, and straight up posses everything with a pulse in New York in the same amount of time.
I love these weird little brain aliens. You really can do anything with them.

I hate when people seem to misunderstand Troy and Abed's relationship as being actually like what Vice Dean Laybourne tried to make them think it was. He didn't understand them, he understood just enough to present a simplified, stereotypical version of what they have. Like yes Abed was initially a little inconsiderate in his response to Troy, but honestly as an autistic person, I understand very well the frustration of having something planned out, being very focused on it, having an agreement with someone, and then they suddenly want to change it. People exaggerate how stubborn he was, he was literally about to give in before Laybourne manipulated him.
And he actually does that quite a lot. In the initial buildup of their friendship, he does things like take cues from Troy's behaviour and try to "mess with" him, because that's what Troy teaches him friends do. He's trying to connect on Troy's level. He plays basketball with him, engaging in interests he doesn't necessarily share, he tolerates Troy's competitiveness and lets him win the race to make him happy. It's Troy who has to get past the attitude that friends only do things for him and not the other way round.
And he does learn to be a good friend, but the idea that Abed doesn't show up for him just as much is bizarre. In Epidemiology, he's insistent that if only one of them survives, it should be Troy. He listens and supports him with the AC repair vs plumbing thing, and it is Troy who decides that he just wants to watch tv with him. When Troy goes to the AC repair school, Abed doesn't try to talk him out of it, even though he's devastated. He's upset when Troy and Britta get together, but he doesn't put that on Troy himself.
He listens to Troy about the impersonator thing, despite deep fears of being controlled, and honestly seems more concerned about their friendship than his own safety. He goes along with the body swap bit at a moment's notice, goes to a restaurant he previously said he couldn't go to, puts up with the waiter badmouthing one of his favourite movies, and breaks up with Britta for Troy. When he's so upset about Troy leaving that he hallucinates lava, he jumps into said lava in order to let him go.
And I especially hate when people, just like Laybourne, use the Inspector Spacetime thing to argue that their relationship is unequal. Like sorry, in other instances, Abed is more than willing to play the villain (Kickpuncher, Alien) or love interest (Kickpuncher) or sidekick (their shadow puppets) to Troy's hero. They do Bert and Ernie, who are equal partners. When they do Calvin and Hobbes, yes he's Calvin, but that's notably something only Troy has expressed an interest in him doing before.
Yeah Inspector Spacetime is a more frequent thing for them, but it's pretty clear that's a really special character for Abed. In Virtual Systems Analysis we can see him use the character to express how he's different from other people. Which, yeah, an autistic person connecting with what is essentially the Doctor...go figure.
Like, look at when he lists characters he thinks are like him: "Data or Johnny 5 or Mork or HAL or K.I.T.T. Or K9 or Woodstock and/or Snoopy. Spock goes without saying." None of those are human. Several robots. Most are not the main character. One is an antagonist. It's probably not often that Abed feels this deep a connection to a character who is undeniably the hero, and while not human, still shows human characteristics. And there's no way Troy is unaware of that.
And by the way, Troy never seems remotely unhappy about playing Constable Reggie until Laybourne talks him into it. And never again afterwards. In fact, when Abed is full on trying to act "normal" at Shirley's wedding rehearsal, Troy talks him into playing Inspector Spacetime...with this ridiculously tender look of love on his face.
It's just...it's a severe mischaracterisation of them both, articulated by a clearly manipulative character, and it bothers me when I see people fall for it.

Could I request Kaminari, Kirishima, Todoroki with a Jamil-like female reader?
Jamil Viper is one of my least favorite characters, besides Ace. Don’t judge, I just don’t like how he took advantage of Kalim like that.
Reader is described to be in the Hero’s Course. I left it up to your interpretation if you are in 1-A or 1-B.
Tumblr media
Denki Kaminari
Everyone viewed your quirk like it was a villain’s quirk, but he didn’t see it that way. Instead, it would be very useful in interrogations and even to deescalate a situation in battle. But, this is Denki we are talking about. He saw both the dirty potential but also the funny potential. He would want to play so many pranks.
But, you stood there with a very unamused look on your face. There was no way you were going to bring yourself down to the level, as your quirk was for your studies within the Hero Course and not for ridiculous jokes. Doesn’t he know that you’ve given yourself headaches because of it? Your quirk was not a joke and it was not to be taken lightly.
He would go to each basketball practice and game, and he would even go to shoot hoops with you if you asked him to. Even if you didn’t he would still be there. He sucks at it, but he gets you to laugh and that’s all that matters. This simp loves to see your smile, especially if he is the cause of it. He will gladly have the basketball hit the back of his head after it deflects off of the backboard if it means that you will have an amused grin on your face.
Denki acts like he’s your hero specifically and will fight off any bullies who try to put you down because of the nature of your quirk. He will make sure that the electricity in their room will go out suddenly, and they’re either freezing to death or dying of a heat stroke. He will also tell them off and say that you were in the Hero Course because you deserved it.
In order to pay him back, you often make him very delicious meals for lunch. It makes him feel loved and he will often tease you about how you obviously love him. You rolled your eyes at his antics, but you had to admit that you did indeed love him. To get your revenge, you would often get close to his face and look into his eyes and say I do love you. Bro goes redder than a tomato.
Tumblr media
Eijiro Kirishima
He thought it wasn’t manly that others would look down at you because of your quirk. He actually found it interesting and would ask questions about it. He does like making a few jokes here and there, but he would never think about using someone’s quirk that they worked so hard to gain control of for some sick joke.
You saw this, and it’s actually how you fell for him. Your family was often overlooked in the hero world, often producing sidekicks rather than full-blown heroes, so knowing that he did see you and wanted to be friends with you warmed your heart. Instead, he would compliment you on how hard you worked during a training session in class.
Kiri also goes to every practice and game that you have, and you best believe that he is wearing your team’s colors: his shirt, his shorts, his crocs, even his face paint. He also has pompoms in the same color because he is your biggest supporter as your boyfriend. It might be a bit embarrassing for you, but this man is straining his voice so that he can be the loudest in the bleachers.
If you were to ever call him your hero, he will have the dopiest smile on his face for the rest of his day. This goes especially when he shows that he is willing to fight a few General Studies students after they said that you didn’t deserve to be in the Hero’s Course because of your ‘villainous quirk’. He scoffed as they ran away, calling them unmanly because they were a bunch of cowards. You decided to be a slight tease and call him your hero, and his knees went weak.
To return the favor, you had cooked him a nutritious and well-balanced meal for lunch the next day. He held the box in his hand, steadily growing more and more red, as you took his other hand to lead him to one of the tables. Mina saw this and began squealing as she made Sero and Kaminari look at the two of you eating lunch with each other.
Tumblr media
Shoto Todoroki
He doesn’t get what exactly makes one’s quirk qualify to be a “villain’s quirk”. Any quirk could be as destructive and evil as anyone else’s, given the right motivation. When he sees a group of students ridiculing you for how you wouldn’t make it as a hero, much less a sidekick, with that evil power of yours, he stepped in and grabbed one of their arms. This resulted in second degree frostbite, and they went away and left you alone.
Shoto also knew about your family, and that the Vipers were typically known for being sidekicks to some of the greatest heroes. But, you wanted to be one of the great heroes, and he respected your resolve to not follow in your family’s footsteps. He’s trying to not be like his father, so he completely understands.
When you invite him and Midoriya to one of your basketball games, he’s kind of confused. His green-haired peer had to explain what basketball was and the rules as they were watching you play on the court. Since Todoroki is a quick learner, he got the rules of the game fairly quickly. However, his comrade still had to tell him when it was appropriate to cheer and also to shout your name just in support.
A few days later, he walked in on you being bullied once again. You wanted to prove them wrong and not use your quirk for evil, but it was very tempting. So, your boyfriend here stepped in and had half his body on fire and the other half covered in ice as he stated that you would not be bothered again unless they wanted third degree burns and frostbite at the same time.
You wanted to pay him back for saving you, as you hated being in debt to someone else, so you decided to make him some food. You made him some soba, and he was surprised when you gave it to him. He thanked you though, and sat next to you as he hated his lunch. It was probably the best soba he has ever had, because it was made by his girlfriend.

Fanon vs. Canon #2: Quirkless people face heavy discrimination
Tumblr media
The second of these posts , first post is here.
This fandom interpretation pops up more frequently with Izuku than it does with Toshinori, but I don’t care, I’m going to write about it anyway. This concept is exactly what it says on the tin: that the phenomenon of Quirklessness is a black mark on a person’s reputation. It ranges from “people make fun of them” to “Quirkless people are abandoned by their parents and randomly murdered on the street.” With Toshinori, it’s often used to formulate backstories about his childhood: he was abandoned as a child for being Quirkless, or had to struggle through heavy discrimination, making Nana’s decision to give him One For All even more meaningful. It’s also used in All-Might-critical works to make him give up on Izuku (so that Izuku can go become a cool vigilante or villain out of spite, or so that some other character can swoop in and play mentor).
You only have to watch the first episode to understand why this idea exists. Izuku’s Quirklessness is devastating to him. His mother cries and tells him “I’m sorry” over it. He is bullied and mocked and told that he can’t achieve his dreams. It’s easy to look at this and conclude that Quirklessness is a terrible, tragic curse.
Tumblr media
But... let’s consider the circumstances first. Izuku’s life goal is to be a hero. And in this series, “hero” is a job position, one that specifically exists to allow people to use Quirks freely. Of course Quirklessness would be a catastrophic handicap in a Quirk-fueled profession.
Imagine a basketball anime where the protagonist is 4’2” but still dreams of joining the top ranked high school basketball team in the nation. Of course his height would be a horrible setback for him. But it would be a huge stretch to decide, just based on watching the basketball tryout episodes, that anyone in their society shorter than 5’11” probably ends up homeless or murdered in back alleys. Quirks may be vital for hero school... but that doesn’t mean they’re vital everywhere.
For example, in the anime, a lot of characters get little intro sequences that briefly showcase their name and their Quirk. At first, this seems to reinforce the idea that this world thinks Quirks are the most important thing about a person. But notice who gets these special intros. As far as I’ve noticed, only heroes or hero students get them. Other characters, even recurring ones like Tsukauchi the police detective, do not get this kind of attention. It’s only done for heroes and aspiring heroes because heroes are the only group that are defined by their Quirks.
Tumblr media
So how does the rest of the world handle Quirklessness? First off, we learn right away that a full 20% of the population is Quirkless. That’s huge. That’s every one in five people! Even if it’s heavily skewed towards the older population, it’s still an enormous percentage. And in the past, the Quirkless population was even larger. This is not an uncommon phenomenon whatsoever. Every person in this society most likely knows a Quirkless person personally.
Of course, it’s very possible to discriminate against a large population. But does the worldbuilding seem to suggest this happens? It actually seems to suggest the opposite. One of the key conflicts in this story is that its society really doesn’t handle people with Quirks very well.
In the world of My Hero Academia, the government responded to the chaos of Quirks by banning public quirk usage entirely. This also extends to employment: people are not allowed to use their Quirks freely in the workplace unless they are "licensed" in an unspecified way. This puts a huge dent in the common idea that being Quirkless hurts a person’s job prospects: having a Quirk wouldn’t necessarily be useful unless it happened to exactly align to their work needs and they also happened to be "licensed" for it. Considering the wide variety of strange Quirks out there, having a Quirk could easily be a downside! Companies don’t have to worry (as much) about Quirkless people accidentally setting chairs on fire or being unable to fit through doors. Being Quirkless could actually be a benefit.
This extends to things like housing as well. Vigilantes is especially direct in addressing these sorts of inequalities, like it does in these panels from chapter 37:
Tumblr media
Quirks are only about 200 years old, and society still doesn’t seem to have the tools to handle them. It seems to have responded by trying to suppress Quirks as much as possible. If you can’t do so, then you are often forced to the fringes of society. This is the main conflict fueling many of the members of the League of Villains, and the entire Meta Liberation Army. In this society, the ability to act Quirk-free is the ideal.
Tumblr media
The differences between people, and the conflict that differences cause, is brought up over and over in this series as it explores why certain people are ostracized by society and what happens when their suffering goes unaddressed. If Quirkless people really faced terrible discrimination, it would only make sense for the story to use them as prime examples of this! But it never does, not even in passing.
The most striking example of this occurs in the 3rd My Hero Academia movie, where a terrorist organization tries to use a bioweapon to eliminate all people with Quirks, leaving only the Quirkless. The story tells us several things indirectly. First: if Quirklessness were oppressed, it would make sense for this Quirkless-glorifying organization to use this angle in order to attract members: rise up against your oppressors! But Humarise doesn’t do this. It just uses a lackluster pseudo-religious argument that Quirks are a “disease.”
Second: if Quirkless people were really a despised underclass, don’t you think these threats would have caused a huge backlash towards the general Quirkless population? Izuku and Toshinori, being former Quirkless people, should have been aware and worried about this, if it were an issue. But we see no animosity like this whatsoever. Not the reaction you’d expect if there was some kind of sharp divide between Quirked and Quirkless people.
One last note on the worldbuilding: Quirklessness is naturally getting rarer and rarer every generation. It seems like a huge waste of effort to try and systematically oppress Quirkless people out of existence when they’re disappearing just fine on their own.
So, based on the way the story is set up, it seems unlikely that there are big systemic issues that cause Quirkless people to have a disadvantage in society. In fact, Quirkless people may have a leg up in some areas. But how about the way that individual Quirkless people are treated by others?
We’ve already seen that Izuku’s struggles in the beginning of the show are largely because he’s trying to get into a profession that is not made for him. Once he gets a Quirk, he has remarkably few lingering issues about his prior Quirklessness. The only time we see it affect him is during the Sports Festival, when he is discouraged by his failure to live up to All Might’s expectations and briefly wonders whether One For All would be better off with someone more skilled who can combine their existing Quirk with its power. But this is resolved within a single conversation, and to my knowledge, Izuku never shows this kind of self-doubt again. Edit: wait, yes he does - after the Shie Hassaikai arc, he gets down on himself and laments that Mirio should have gotten OFA instead. This triggers a bunch of other emotional issues, but they seem more related to hiding his troubles than to his sense of worthiness.
The most striking thing is how Katsuki, bully extraordinaire, reacts to Izuku over the series. He is enraged when the “Quirkless” Izuku begins showing off superpowers... but it’s all because it threatens his superiority complex. And later, in chapter 117, when he puts the pieces together that Izuku got a Quirk from All Might... it might just be my interpretation, but he doesn’t seem to react the way one would expect if Quirklessness was a huge mark of inferiority. He barely brings it up, and is mostly just self-centered and guilty about All Might’s downfall. The whole fight is him trying to understand why Izuku deserved this power, rather than trying to assert that he doesn’t deserve it in the first place.
Tumblr media
And after this fight, Katsuki seems to accept Izuku’s borrowed power as legitimate. He faithfully keeps Izuku’s secret and there’s no talk about anything like Izuku not deserving it.
Later, when (spoilers ahead for anime-only viewers) Quirklessness becomes a plot point in explaining why Izuku can wield One For All without shortening his lifespan, none of the vestiges express much wonder about Quirklessness itself; they don’t say anything like “to think that such a despised condition would have such a fortuitous upside...” It’s just treated as an interesting oddity.
There are three other confirmed born-Quirkless people in the main series so far: Toshinori Yagi, Melissa Shield, and Yuga Aoyama. With Toshinori, we don’t learn much about his experience being Quirkless, just that the world was in turmoil during his childhood and he felt compelled to make a difference. He doesn’t talk about what it felt like to be Quirkless, because trying to get personal feelings out of him is like pulling teeth.
Tumblr media
He does tell Izuku that Izuku can’t “become a hero like All Might” without a Quirk... because of course he can’t. All Might can’t be a hero like All Might without a Quirk; no support items could possibly bridge that gap. Otherwise, he doesn’t give any overtly negative opinions on Quirkless people throughout the course of the story and is overall pretty cryptic.
Melissa Shield, on the other hand, has a whole mini-comic all about her Quirklessness. Here’s how her peers behave towards her:
Tumblr media
Far from the witch-burning hatred we see in fanfic. They’re friendly with her, they’re trying to include her. The main thing she struggles with is not overt prejudice, but a feeling of being different. (And again... she is probably not as alone as she feels. Remember that 20% number.)
Tumblr media
But luckily, during the comic, All Might teaches her that you don’t need a Quirk to be someone’s hero, and her dejection lifts. By the time we see her grown-up in the movie, she seems happy and well-adjusted, and discloses her Quirklessness voluntarily without any apparent distress. She even seems confused when Izuku expresses pity towards her. She’s in a prestigious academy, studying to be a scientist, and there are no signs that her Quirklessness is hindering her goals.
Aoyama has a less clear picture of his childhood, but like Melissa, there were no indications of bullying or oppression, only a fear of being different. It wasn’t even him who felt this fear the strongest... it was his parents, who entered into a deal with the devil to grant him a Quirk so he could be more like everyone else. Did they do this because Quirkless people are shameful pariahs in this society and they wanted to protect him, or because they were vain and wanted to keep up with the Joneses by making sure their kid was as flashy as everyone else, even if it meant consorting with crime lords? Maybe it was a little of both. We may never know for sure.
Tumblr media
The takeaway from this is that none of these characters show evidence of widespread oppression because of their Quirklessness. Izuku is the closest thing to an exception - he was ostracized, and targeted by a bully, but his situation was complicated by his hero goals, and Katsuki seemed hellbent on putting Izuku down even before he knew Izuku was Quirkless. Quirkless people suffer from a fear of being different... but “being different” is not something unique to Quirkless people. People with inconvenient Quirks are shown to suffer much more because of their Quirks than we see any of the Quirkless characters suffer for being ordinary.
In conclusion: both from the worldbuilding and from individual histories, there’s not a lot of support for the idea that Quirkless people face marked societal difficulties, or are considered lower-class, except perhaps in the context of a hero school. They might feel left out and different, but that’s a far cry from being randomly targeted for hate crimes.
Even if there’s little canonical backing, it makes sense why Quirkless discrimination would still be an intriguing concept to explore. It’s always poignant to explore the story of someone who lacks the thing everyone else has. Plus, the distinct lack of canon coverage leaves plenty of opportunity for fandom to fill in the unexplored possibilities.
But according to the official story, the condition of Quirklessness seems about on par with being born short in a world where some kids want to grow up to be basketball stars. Can it cause discrimination? Yes, for sure. People will discriminate over the most trivial things, and many Quirks can provide intrinsic benefits that a Quirkless person will miss out on. But it seems like something subtle, not on the level of a widespread hate campaign.
Once again... I'm not some kind of expert, I forget basics about the show all the time. I'd love to hear your rebuttals or additions on the topic. And fanfic is valuable and fun because it explores topics in a different way than canon does.
(Thanks to @journalxxx for lots of help and input on this post)

An Abundance of Penguin Shit by vixensheart
T | 295.1K | 25/25 | AU no quirks, AU animal handler, Slowburn, penguins, panic attacks
Penguins are overrated, in Katsuki's mind. They smell, they're loud, and they shit every ten minutes. How he ended up working with them, he doesn't know, but he hates it.
Okay, so maybe he needed a pay raise. Sue him. That doesn't mean he enjoys it. It's hard to enjoy getting bit every time he so much as looks at a penguin, after all. Let alone when he tries to handle one.
It certainly doesn't help that he keeps getting paired with Kirishima, who's all smiles and way too damn friendly for his own good.
~
Or, when Katsuki works as an animal handler because he's broke and hungry, and inadvertently warms up to both the penguins, and a certain red-haired boy.

T | 35.5K | 1/1 | AU college, fluff and angst, strangers to lovers, first dates, public transportation, basketball player kirishima
(past child abuse)
Bakugo always fucking hated riding the subway every week, its crowded, loud and he's tired, but then he starts seeing the same redhead every time.
--
Katsuki blinked in disbelief. What the shit, he’s asking to play rock, paper, scissors. Is he fucking five years old? Who can be this stupid?! And he took his hand off the handle, does he want to fall?
Katsuki glared at him, but the redhead just smiled, and his eyes glint with a challenge, and before Katsuki can really think it through he’s taking his free hand and making a fist in front of himself.
The redhead’s smile turned less challenging and more cheerful, and Katsuki decided that this might not be that bad. He’s going to fucking crush him at rock, paper, scissors, even if it’s a stupid game.

T | 26.9K | 3/3 | time travel, marriage, future fic, angst with a happy ending
It’s at that moment that Bakugou realizes something is very, very wrong. He glances down at himself and sees scars he’s never had before along his arms, little nicks and scratches he’d never have been oblivious to. When he reaches up, his limbs feel longer, and as he staggers to his feet he stands several centimeters taller than he had, last thing he knew. He glances at the mirror, catches sight of his reflection, and screams.
One of the doors on the opposite side of the room bursts open, steam spilling out into the bedroom. A man crosses the room in quick strides, looking around for some enemy he can’t yet see.
No, not just a man. Kirishima.
When a confrontation with a villain throws Bakugou through time, he's forced to face a future he never imagined, and maybe something he can't leave behind.
the easy parts by chonideno
T | 11.6K | 1/1 | hurt/comfort, canon compliant, scars, insecurity, happy ending
Kirishima made it out alive but his body is covered in wounds that won't heal without leaving marks behind. He hides them away from the sight of others, away from his own, and he hates every part of it. Bakugou watches him reduce his own character to a parody of what it used to be, and he can't stand it.
Or how Bakugou and Kirishima learn to deal with these scars, with themselves, with each other.

Izuku Midoriya was a competitive cheerleader up until an injury to his hand made tumbling and stunting an impossibility. It's devastating to think that cheer could be out of his life for good—until a pair of enthusiastic classmates show up at Izuku's dorm room with a signup sheet for a new hockey cheerleading club. All that's left to do is learn how exactly hockey works...and try not to think too much about the prodigious freshman right wing, who's just about the most wonderful person Izuku's ever met.
Shouto Todoroki has eaten, slept, and breathed hockey his whole life. He's got a legacy to live up to with his pro-hockey old man, and he's no stranger to the scrutiny and expectations of his coaches and teammates. It's different now that he plays for UA, though. He's got a former pro coach who sees potential in him and teammates who might actually like him as a person. Then there's the cheerleading captain, who's kind and compassionate in a way Shouto's never known—and who won't rest until Shouto stops dismissing hockey as nothing more than his old man's game.

“It's fine. I don't talk very much.”
Midoriya grins again, lighting up the booth brighter than the light hanging over the table. “We're a perfect pair, then!”
xx
Todoroki Shouto moves in with someone he's never met, just while he's in town for his show. He's never really known what home could mean, and, well, Izuku's the perfect ball of sunshine to show him.

He almost crashes into Deku, grabbing his arm in one hand and his face in the other. Katsuki’s index and thumb press into either side of his jaw, squishing Deku’s cheeks together.

CHARACTER:
QUALITIES: friendly, understanding, intelligent, explorer, fun, brave.
DISADVANTAGE: distrustful of everyone, angry, deceitful, joking, serious
FLAVORS:
see landscapes, cook, fly, play basketball, sleep
I DON'T LIKE:
Be sociable, don't let the drawings turn out the way you want, study even if you are very intelligent, let yourself be bossed, go out when you don't want to.
FAVORITE FOOD:
Lasagna, sushi, pizza
HOBBIES:
Draw, dance, make figures.
MY CHARACTER DATA:
Yōki always likes to do her things calmly and not let anyone rush her because if they rush her she gets angry. He spends a lot of time in his room or outside the house drawing, there is not a minute that he does not draw but at the same time he studies to learn Korean, English and a little bit of other languages (but Spanish seems normal for him since one of his parents is Latin)
His idol is the falcons and the blade, so he strives to have the same abilities.
Something curious about Yōki is that she doesn't really like being a hero and she doesn't like being a villain either, so she is an antihero (helps both parties) and has not yet decided what to be, and well she draws and enjoys her life ( since he has problems with his family). His best friend is shinso, they get along quite well since they were little, and well yōki has his duality of not occupying his wings (problems from his childhood) but when he is not a hero he occupies them and frees himself (from tensions). Of everything).

Made by the amazing @ronald-speirs (my sister wrote this part, but I've seen your stuff and I agree so I'm leaving it). And thanks @1waveshortofashipwreck for the tag
Favorite place in the world you’ve visited?
Mt. Etna. When I was little (like, 3rd grade) we lived in Sicily, and one winter my brother and I wanted desperately to play in the snow, but it hadn't snowed where we lived in a long time. So we took a drive up Etna until we saw snow, where we stopped and spent the day playing around in it. (It was later that there was a horrible eruption that caused a bad earthquake where we lived, but I sleep like Nixon so I was dead to the world throughout the event.)
Something you’re proud of yourself for?
Making it through fire academy. Other than playing basketball one year in childhood I had never been very athletic, but I was out there doing bleacher runs, blackout drills, and climbing ladders to drag giant hoses to the top of buildings with the rest of them. I'm driven by the desire to not make an ass out of myself in front of others, and somehow I was able to do all those things, and ultimately participate in a live burn at the end of the program.
Favorite books?
Making my way through the books written by and about the troopers, so I gotta go with Band of Brothers. But my other favorites are anything by Kurt Vonnegut, the Dark Tower series, the Black Company series, Les Miserables, Moby Dick, Practical Demonkeeping (and almost anything by Christopher Moore), Hitchhiker's Guide...I'm sure I'm leaving some out, I love to read (Dick Tracy and Flash Gordon mostly...I couldn't resist).
Something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?
.........band of brothers. Specifically my background characters. Specifically Smokey and McClung.
Favorite thing about your culture? About being American?
When did you join the HBO War fandom? What was the first show you watched?
It was a long road.......it came out when my family was stationed in Japan, so I didn't really know about it until I moved back. Streaming wasn't a thing then, so I would catch parts here and there, and I eventually figured I had seen the whole thing. Spent a long time thinking that people overreacted to it and that it was overrated. But I'm also leaving out one thing: that I am stupid. Figured my sister would appreciate having seen it, and suggested we watch it. I realized at the end of the first episode just how stupid I am.
Have you read any of Easy Company’s books? If so, which ones were your favorite?
I have a growing collection, but work often gets in the way. I've only read Ambrose's Band of Brothers. I've also read the Smokey portion of A Company of Heroes by Marcus Brotherton.
Favorite HBO War character and your favorite moment with them?
Have I mentioned how much I love Smokey yet.... One of his best moments (I think) is when he meets with Roe in Bastogne in his foxhole and gives him the morphine, tells him where to find scissors, and about Toye's boots.
Also McClung. And I love "ask him to dance, doc." The battle on the outskirts of Carentan has to be one of my favorite parts of the series though.
Do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
Just some gifs so far. I do like to write, but I've never dabbled in fanfiction.
Favorite actor/actress and your favorite film of theirs?
Russell Crowe and Michael Fassbender are the ones where I'll pretty much watch anything as long as one of them is in it, even if it's bad (like Jonah Hex...horrible movie, but worth it to see Fassbender's little villain character doing his little tee-hee leprechaun laugh through all his scenes). I'll also watch almost anything with Emily Blunt, she is fantastic and a hilarious human being.
Favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?
So many by Kurt Vonnegut, but I'll just put two:
"If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you're a one-eyed man in a kingdom of the blind."
"We are healthy only to the extent that our ideas are humane."
Random fact your mutuals/followers don’t know about you?
I had a bearded dragon named Ichabod years ago. And I still love that name for a lizard.
If you’re a writer, do you need a beta reader (say yes so I can be your beta reader 🤭)?
If I ever start writing again, then yes. 😊
Three things that make you smile?
Anything band of brothers (obviously)
my remote-controlled tank (which I did not expect to love so much)
Facial muscles
Any nicknames you like?
You can call me anything and I won't care. If it's an insult I'll probably just wind up more confused than offended.
List some people you love to see around on tumblr!
I can't even think of all the people I see around here, but of course my sister @1waveshortofashipwreck, also @executethyself35, @love--persevering. And the ones I see around like @panzershrike-pretz, @dustyjumpwjngs, @blood-mocha-latte, @ewipandora, @cody-helix02, @blueberry-ovaries, @grumpy-liebgott, @hanniewinnix, @kafka-ohdear, @malarkgirlypop, @whollyjoly (i'm sure i'm leaving some out, sorry....)
What would you do during a zombie apocalypse?
Finally have a job I like probably. Not like I have a crowbar, axe, jacket with a thousand pockets, and combat boots hoping for something to happen...
Favorite movie?
So, so many. The 12th Man, Four Lions, The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Professional, Headhunters, the Full Monty, anything in the Mad Max franchise, Death of Stalin, Tremors, District 9, the Right Stuff, Children of Men, Suddenly Last Summer, Banshees of Inisherin, Dunkirk, 1917, Fury, 28 Days Later, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Drop Dead Fred, Sicario, Lars and the Real Girl, Casablanca, Three Kings, the Great Escape, the Fifth Element, Hud, Stand By Me, Tucker & Dale vs Evil, Evolution...I could go on
Do you like horror movies?
Yup. 28 Days Later is up there in my favorites. The Descent is an EXCELLENT horror movie for anyone that hasn't seen it (and has made it this far down my rambling answers). Ravenous isn't very well known, and it's not perfect, but it's fun and weird. Stir of Echoes is an unconventional horror movie, but an excellent one-off story. Slither is a fun one with a decent cast (Elizabeth Banks, Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, among others).
No pressure tags!!
I'm just gonna copy and paste the people I put up in my answers. Sorry if you already did this, but enjoy another tag: @executethyself35, @love--persevering, @panzershrike-pretz, @dustyjumpwjngs, @blood-mocha-latte, @ewipandora, @cody-helix02, @blueberry-ovaries, @grumpy-liebgott, @hanniewinnix, @kafka-ohdear, @malarkgirlypop, @whollyjoly

Hi, I saw your drawings of JamiKali Spider-Man AU, and I LOVED IT!!
How is this AU? And what do you think of JamiKali's Shipp?
OH you just reminded me to add the tag for this AU on other previous posts where I was chatting about it with ppl who sent me asks! The general tag for my blog is ".twst into the spider verse" if you want to check mine and other people's ideas on it in more detail over there!
Second question first: I'm not really into shipping im general, so idk, I don't think about JamiKali much tbh skdndwknd 🏃
And for the first question I'll take this ask as an opportunity to sum up some hcs I have for this AU 👍 but some important notes first:
I personally rather imagine this AU as a magicless/not-so-magic-central kinda world just for simplicity sake, but the rest of twst og lore pretty much remains the same.
I just talk abt scarabia here bcs they are my faves!
Since what inspired me to ramble about this AU was across the spider-verse, I do make a brief mention canon events and a bit of multiverse stuff
Also there is major character death here 🧍
Scarabia into the spider-verse, headcanons under the cut!
Earth 2506 - Kalim as the spider-man of his dimension. Can also be referred to as the desert-spider!
uhh (making up an origin story on the spot right now) considering he comes from a family of influential merchants, maybe they got a great deal to partner up with some sort of scientific corporation, to deal with the business side of their new technologies. Kalim was for the first time invited to one of the meetings, as the heir to the family business, it was about time for him to check in person how things worked on this field. In short, it did not end well. As they walked around the corporation's main labs, one spider subject went loose, and Kalim stood right under its web.
he's very fitting to be a spidey, considering his happy-go-lucky personality, he'd be the type of spider-man to mess around and have a lot of fun playing the role of a hero
(Fight goes silent)
Kalim: well! that was another easy adventure for spider ma-
(Big explosion)
Jamil is the first one to know about this secret identity of course. He covers up any potential slips, as to not reveal this secret to anyone else
One notable thing about spider-man!Kalim is that he can afford whatever hero gadgets he needs. Gotta fix his web shooters? Want a nice improvement on his hero constume? No problem. He got a fair share of contacts from people who'd easily do all of these for him. Even though it is Jamil the one who usually runs after this stuff in his place...
Canon event stuff being losing a best friend? Jamil in this universe actually becomes Venom (maybe he found a symbiote from the same lab the spider came from) and yeah they had to fight. Jamil probably snapped for the same reasons he got his overblot. And this is the part where Kalim learns that with great powers comes great responsibility...
What would happen next? Does he move on eventually after the fight? Will there be other villains for spider-man to stop? How will he keep the secret identity now that Jamil's gone? Well, these are great questions, because- (runs away)
Earth 1209 - Jamil as the spider-man of his dimension. Idk if he'd go by any other variant of a spider-man name
Now that I think about it, his own universe is probably an accidental breach from Kalim's. As in "what if Kalim didn't get bitten at the lab, and instead brought the radioactive spider back home by accident?" then when Jamil took Kalim's backpack he was the one to get bitten instead
Ace happened to be the first one to find out about Jamil's powers after an incident on a basketball game. Their dynamic is funny. It's not like Ace wants to be the "guy in the chair" but if Jamil's secret identity is ever at risk, he'd volunteer to help, no questions asked. And aside from him, Najma is the only other person who knows about this as well. The very moment spider-man made his first appearance in public she knew! She says it's a "sister instinct", or something like that. She'd even offer to help him and make him a proper hero uniform... but ONLY if he agrees to do all the house chores for her for a month.
Najma: you gotta say it first :)
Jamil: (sigh) callforbackup
Najma: what? :)
Jamil: .......callforbackup
Najma: come onn :)
Jamil: PLEASE just call for-
Najma: yeah I already called it :)
Perhaps spider-man!Jamil has a puppeteer-like skill that he can use to control a small number of people with his webs!
Leona could be a mentor type of character in this universe. Like Jamil already kinda looks up to him in canon, but this time they are a little nicer to each other loll and I only bring this up because there is no "uncle Ben" for Jamil to lose, but Leona is the closest thing he could have to one, so...... canon event. That also ties up to that spider-man story trope of the hero finding himself in the wrong place wrong time, by the side of the person they just lost, only for a third party to walk in and assume it was spider-man the one who killed them. Having people assume this masked man to have killed a person as prestigious as Leona immediately makes spider-man public enemy #1
And edit: just remembered the point abouve could be Kalim alternatively. Which would be even more tragic to think both Jamil and Kalim lose each other in their respective universes
But what do we do after that? How does Jamil redeem himself after this misunderstanding? What if he just gives up being spider-man? Well, uhhh these are also good questions.... look over there! (runs away again)

Tumblr media
(Slight chapter 6 spoilers)
You really shouldn’t be here.
Well, that could go for your situation in general, but now it was especially true. Night Raven College’s (apparently) infamous school play was coming up. Just how many events did this place hold? Why did that matter to you? One of the casting directors got sick and the theater club needed to find a replacement. Which was you, for some reason.
No, you knew the reason.
The club members had complained to Headmaster Crowley and he had picked you as a suitable stand-in director. You didn’t have anything to do with the theater club, you had nothing to do with any club! It was probably a problem that Crowley didn’t want to deal with (which seemed to go for a lot of the problems on campus) so it was dropped into your lap. You barely had time to read the script before the auditions started. The other two casting directors, a Pomefiore student and a Heartslabyul student, threw out terms you had no idea what meant when judging the candidates. You just nodded along, occasionally giving a shallow judgement.
It was time to find the lead role, the hero of the story.
The two boys nearly jumped in their seats when the next auditioner stepped in. A lot of people in the school wore heeled shoes, but that clicking was unmistakable.
“Dorm leader!” One of the boys exclaimed, his face going from surprise to joy. You supposed having Vil in the play would attract a lot of people and you were expecting him to be here. You smiled at him and gave a small thumb-ups, as a way of telling him to do his best. He only looked at your with his usual glare.
Why did you do that?
“Why are you here, Prefect?” He asked, folding his arms. Why did he look so offended? Was it really that bad for you to be here? Then you recalled something, you’d said to Vil that if you ever joined a club, you would join the Movie Appreciation Club. You didn’t know the first thing about horses, you couldn’t play Magical Shift if you didn’t have magic, playing basketball with Floyd was a terrifying thought and joining the Light Music Club would be same as just hanging out after school. Vil’s club was the best option.
You quickly explained that you were just filling in, leaving out the part about being here against your will. Vil hummed in response and turned to one of the club members. “I will be auditioning for the role of Alistair,” he told the boy. So, he was going for the lead role. You had to admit, you were kind of excited to see his audition. The character’s personality was completely different from Vil’s. At first, the two boys looked at each other with an unreadable expression. “Is there a problem?” The tall blonde asked, hands resting on his hips now.
“Of course not, we’re honored to have you audition! Please start!” The director quickly responded.
You know noticed that while everyone had come in with a copy of the script, Vil was empty-handed.
You were still blown away by Vil Schoenheit’s audition, even many candidates later it still lingered persistently in your mind. Even if the character was different, Vil had portrayed him so convincingly, it was like he became a whole new person. There was a passion for the story behind the performance as well, the way he proudly said Alistair’s closing line before he defeated the villain and brought peace to the kingdom.
The two theater club members pulled out their notes, preparing to give out the roles. You didn’t have much input, but there was someone you felt like had earned his part.
“Let’s give Vil-senpai the part of The Sorcerer, he would look amazing!” One of the boys said, the other nodded in agreement. Hearing the villain’s name in the same sentence as Vil’s brought you out of your thoughts.
“But he auditioned for Alistair?” You questioned. The two boys perked up, like they had forgotten you were even there.
“It was a breath-taking performance, but…you know”, the Heartslabyul student said, making a gesture.
“No, I don’t know”, You spoke.
“He mostly plays the role of the villain in movies, we thought he’d do the best if he plays the villain here too, it’s type-casting!” The other boy explained. “Dormleader Vil can make any character into the audience’s favorite!” He added. You weren’t sure what you were feeling right now, anger or disappointment. They were just going to give him the role he always had, without even giving him a chance. It was two against one and a battle that needed skills you didn’t have.
But you had to try.
“I don’t know, maybe that’s a little boring”, you said. The other two looked your way with curious faces, you quickly thought of where to go from here. You may not have any theater knowledge, but with the amount of plans you came up with on the fly, you might as well be a master at improv. “Our goal is also to attract a big audience right?” You shifted in your seat. “How about we offer something no one else has done before? Just imagine it, we’ll be the first to have Vil Schoenheit play the hero!” You said. The two excused themselves to the corner of the room, whispering to each other. You felt a bit like you had put on a performance yourself and you were hoping for an applause.
“Well…maybe you’re right, Prefect”, one of them said as the they returned from their meeting.
You had a pep in your step as you walked with the rolled-up cast list under your arm. A few students were already waiting by the bulletin board, but Vil was nowhere to be seen. You had hoped to see his reaction, would he give one of his genuine smiles? Your cheeks began to burn at the thought, just what were you thinking? You walked through the crowd and put up the list, quickly moving as to not get trampled by the students rushing to see the results. You heard few gasps and a few mumbles of Vil’s name, seemed as though everyone was expecting him to play the villain.
You smiled to yourself, so absorbed in your thoughts that you nearly collied with someone.
“Ah! Excusez-moi Trickster, I am simply too excited to see which part Roi du Poison got!” Rook exclaimed, smiling. “Ah, It is such a beautiful tale…”, Rook sighed as he approached the board. His green eyes went wide for a second, but his expression melted into a joyful smile. This only made you long more to see if Vil would be just as happy.
“Please! Just a little bit of tuna?” Grim tugged at your pant-leg as the two of you walked back from the Mystery Shop.
“Not before dinner”, you sighed. A figure walking towards you caught your attention, it was Vil. You hadn’t seen him since the audition, he had to know about his part by now. You expected to just give him a greeting as he walked to wherever he needed to be. But he stopped in his tracks, making you do the same.
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you”, he said, those words sending slight shivers down your spine. Was he mad? You left Grim and the groceries on a bench as you followed Vil.
“I spoke to the theater club, they told me that you gave quite a convincing pitch at the auditions”, he said, hand on his hip. This was it, you were dead. It had probably sounded like you making him out to be some sort of product.
“I couldn’t let them do it…”, you started. Vil raised a perfectly-shaped eyebrow, silently beckoning you to continue. “I couldn’t let them just give you the role of the villain and not the role you deserve”, you said, keeping your gaze down.
His amethyst eyes boring into yours was too much. “You’re more than the roles you play, you’re a very helpful person”, you recalled spotting him helping students from his dorm study for a test. He had dedicated himself to helping them along, it had made you smile and seeing him rehearse lines with his club members was heartwarming to see too.
“The Vil that’s the reason my dorm won’t be run-down much longer…I want others to see that Vil, the one that’s my hero”.
You felt pretty good about that one…until you realized it sounded like a sickly cheesy love confession. You’ve never wished to get roped into trouble before, it just found you. But now you hoped it would find you faster to keep you from dying of embarrassment. A mysterious scream that you had to go check out, someone crashing on a broom…but there was nothing except for the honeyed sound of Vil Schoenheit’s genuine laugh.
You finally looked up at him, your heart skipping a beat. He was smiling, not his usual cool smirk but a soft and content smile. The sun going down behind him made his golden hair shine and you began to laugh with him.
“Is that so? I expect you to do your best with the play, don’t disappoint me after those words”, he spoke.
“What?” You asked. You thought your involvement with the play would be over after the auditions.
“Your name is on the list of directors”, Vil said, crossing his arms. You felt a strong urge to punch Crowley square in the face.
“I haven’t even seen the play”, you sighed, putting a hand to your temple. “I mean I rented the movie but…”, you mumbled. Vil’s eyes widened, now you’d offended him.
“The movie and the play are completely different, not to mention movie acting and theater acting are-“, his sentence was cut short by his phone ringing.
Vil had to go to an interview, leaving you feeling weirdly giddy. When you returned to the bench, Grim was snoozing with an empty tuna can beside him.
“So Rook, will you now tell me why I had to follow you here?” You asked the hunter as the two of you entered the Pomefiore dorm. Rook was a good friend, but the definition of unpredictable and you were starting to get worried.
“There you are, come on now, we haven’t got all night”. You turned around to see Vil, barely able to respond before he grabbed your wrist. His grip was firm but it didn’t hurt. You sure were getting dragged around a lot this evening. Rook waved the two of you off, a smile on his face.
What plans did Vil have with you?
“We aren’t allowed to go off campus this late, so this will have to do”, Vil said. Why would he want to take you off campus? He opened the door, revealing his bedroom. “No one should bother us in here”, he said and you choked on air.
Could this be…?
You saw him sit on the small sofa at the edge of his bed, getting out his laptop. “There’s a livestream of the play tonight, you have to have watched it to be a director”, he said. You breathed a sigh of relief, this was a totally normal situation. You mentally slapped yourself for thinking it could be anything else. You sat down next to him, sitting and watching something with Vil…it was nice, even if it was technically studying. He stood up and retrieved two glasses from his table. “I made too much smoothie”, he explained, handing you the cup.
Just enough for two glasses, how funny.
The play started and the next two hours went by. Vil occasionally pointed out important details, but the two of you mostly sat in silence. It was a comfortable and relaxing silence.
“You know, at first I was annoyed that I had to help with the play…but it really is an amazing story”, you admitted as the performance ended.
“Let us do it justice then”, Vil said and you nodded.

So I’m sure a lot of other people have picked up on this already, but I really feel like there’s a solid reason why the Duffers specifically show their characters playing a DnD game at the beginning of every season. Yes, the kids love it and it’s an activity that brings them together, but I feel like it’s also because each game is meant to provide the viewer with hints about what’s to come in the rest of the respective season.
Game 1 (Nov. 8th, 1983 | Basic DnD)
This is the first game we see them play, and in it, Mike as the DM introduces the enemy of the Demogorgon. Lucas urges Will to fireball, while Dustin begs him to cast a protection spell. Will attempts to roll to fireball the Demogorgon, but only rolls a 7 when he needs a 13 or higher, meaning that Will’s character is defeated by the Demogorgon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later that evening, Will himself is abducted by an actual Demogorgon that has made its way into Hawkins via the Upside Down gate.
Game 2 (Season 3, specific date and type unknown)
When Will returns from the Upside Down at the end of Season 2, we see him DMing a game and unsuccessfully trying to get Lucas and Mike engaged in the campaign he is leading. Bored and wanting to go home, Mike tells Will that his character will use his torch to set fire to the chamber, sacrificing himself and Lucas’ character to save their people, and that they will be remembered forever as heroes in the eyes of those they saved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could possibly be a reference to the end of Season 3 when Billy sacrifices himself to save Eleven from the Mind Flayer, and Hopper sacrifices himself to close the gate to the Upside Down. In the beginning of Season 4, both Hopper and Billy are mentioned in the pep rally speech given by Jason, with Hopper being specifically referenced as “heroic”, and additionally being chosen by Eleven for her historical person project since he is her hero.
Game 3 (March 21, 1986 | Advanced DnD)
On the night of March 21, 1986, the Hellfire Club consisting of Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, substitute Erica Sinclair (standing in for her brother Lucas who was playing in Hawkins Championship basketball game balls in laundry baskets game), Gareth, Jeff, and Eddie’s other unnamed friend all meet for DM Eddie’s “Cult of Vecna” campaign. Eddie brings back the villain Vecna, previously thought dead, and the group agrees to fight him “to the death”. However, Vecna decimates the party, eventually leaving only Erica and Dustin’s characters. Dustin first attempts to defeat Vecna, but only rolls an 11, a miss. However, Erica rolls a natural 20 at the last second, gaining a critical hit that defeats Vecna.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, based on that knowledge, I’m guessing Eleven will go up against Vecna but fail, and need someone or something to come in for the assist (a “natural 20”) that either enables her powers to go into overdrive or just gives her the extra boost she needs to finish Vecna once and for all.

His name is actually Augustus but he's either called Gus (by his friends) or Oggie (by his family.) He enjoys science fiction, reading romantic things, playing a card game - his favourite is called MYTHIC - and building robots with his dad, Lucas. They built a few toy cars together too. (His mum's name is Julia.) He plays the violin in a band called The Sons. Or Pandemonium... He and Mike are still arguing over the name.
Tumblr media
Gus is a Shifter. He has the power to control l energy. He mostly uses it to capture light and electricity and spit it back out at his enemies. There are thousands of Shifters in the world I created and a lot of them are extremely dangerous and evil people. Shifters are the primary villains that they fight so it's good that the group has one on their side.
Gus has been to five different schools in his life and has been bullied in all of them. Including his current school. This is one of the reasons he has a strong sense of justice and he freaks out if he sees another kid getting bullied. He's really good at defending himself others but not good at defending himself.
His name is Ryan and he likes dancing, music, skateboarding, action and crime movies and cooking. He's actually a really great cook. 😁 He plays the drums in band, The Sons.
Tumblr media
He carries blades on the battlefield alongside Gus. His most prominent weapon is this humungous axe. He also has machetes and whips - whips with spikes. 😈
Ryan defends Gus when he can't do it himself. (It's not like he can just use his powers, he'd be discovered then.) He quickly becomes the greatest friend he's ever had.
Ryan finds it hard to see the good in his enemies. In his eyes if you do something bad everything else you do is now suspect. This is an unfortunate but important trait for the plot.
His name is Michael. He likes practising magic and with his magic cards. He also likes fashion, although he'd never admit it, giving gifts, and eating/snacking. He's a very talkative person. He often borea people by going on long tangents. What's interesting is that half of what he says is a lie - or at least extremely exaggerated. He plays the trumpet in the band called Pandemonium.
Tumblr media
He uses advanced technology on the battlefield alongside Ryan. He straps these advanced guns on both of his arms that eject bullets, digital webs and all kinds of signals. The webs can catch people before they fall and the guns also switch to drill mode which helps if he wants to tear down a wall. He also rides a hoverboard.
Before joining the heroes' side Michael was a cowardly bully who hurt a ton of people at school out of anger. He bullied with the help of his 'friends' Zackary and Adrian, who he calls Zack and A.J.
Tumblr media
Zack is the one on the left.
His parents are always fighting and bickering like children and they ignore him most of time when he's at home. Too busy with their careers to care if he's doing something abnoxious or cruel. They never even knew that he was a bully. Whenever they talk to him it's always in a dismissive or disappointed tone. Mike always felt like they didn't even want to be parents. Once when he was younger and fatter (about ten years old) his mum straight up called him a pig to his face.
He never got over that.
His name is Seth. He's autistic, likes playing basketball his guitar and with his pet parrot. And he jogs around the block from time to time.
I think Seth might be the least developed character in the book. I'm not even sure what weapons he uses. I know I'm giving him a glider though (inspired by genshin impact.) He still does have an arc in the story though.
Tumblr media
Because Seth was autistic he was picked on for acting and speaking in a strange way all the time. He kind of just gave up on interacting with kids his age entirely. Until Mike comes along and helps him communicate better and coaxes him out of his shell.
There's a ton of other things I want to say but these are the basics.
Any questions? 😁
I'll answer them all as best as I can.

Summary: Henry and Ray answers the captain man hotline when an accident happens.
In the man cave, a competitive game was being played. A hoop hung from in front of the elevator. “I’m open, I'm open” Schwoz yelled from in front of the hoop. He swayed his arms to the sides as he jumped in the air excitedly.
Ray sidestepped and dodged Jasper pushing him away with his arm. Tricking Henry and Jasper, he threw the ball with his right into the hoop before either could block him.
“Boom!” Ray cheered as the ball fell into the basket, an excited Cheshire grin on his face as he leaped around Henry and Jasper as the two groaned.
Charlotte watched amusingly. When red lights and loud sirens began to go off in the man cave. “It’s the Captain Man hotline” She grabbed the remote from the table and paused the radio sitting on the tool table.
Ignoring the boy’s complaints. She leaped off the foot of the half-circle couch and ran to the desk and switched the monitor on. Henry followed behind her his arm leaning on the back of her chair as he looked at the screen.
“Someone’s trying to rob the swell view bank,” She said quickly then pushed away from the desk looking up at Henry who stood next to her with a frown, and over at Ray who was still gloating. “And they're holding hostages,” She said slowly, almost in suspense.
Henry stood up straight and looked over at Ray, he stopped jumping around and his jaw tightened. No more joking around. Most calls on the captain man hotline weren't serious: a cat stuck in the tree, a fan calling to talk to the superhero or sidekick. But when Hostages were involved the situation was automatically labeled as dire.
Ray walked up to the desk with his hands on his hips. “Alright kid danger game’s over” He announced loudly his eyes narrowing at the red alert on the monitor screen and a serious expression was written across his face.
“Aw man” Jasper and Schwoz complained disappointingly before tossing the basketball to the side crashing loudly into something. Charlotte and Henry turned to look at them with an unbelievable faces. Both Henry and Ray hurried to stand beside each other in the middle of the man cave.
“‘Let’s blow some bubbles,” Henry said as took the long capsule out of his back pocket and threw a piece of red gum into his mouth, and began to chew. “ And fight some crime” Ray continued dramatically flexing his arms as his captain man uniform appeared onto his body in a bright light.
The two looked down at their bodies in awe as usual. “I feel good~” Kid Danger wagged his eyebrows coyly. “Just go” Charlotte raised her voice, irritated they both nodded listening to her, and jogged to their tubes. “‘Up the tube” Kid Danger hollered looking up in the air as he hit the control panel strapped onto his hip.
After using the man van the hero and sidekick traveled by foot and hid behind a dumpster in the dark alleyway behind the bank. Kid Danger got a peek at the robber and one of the hostages where they sat cornering in the room before he ducked back down.
Captain Man stroked his chin thoughtfully. “They’re wearing a mask that’s smart,” He said admiringly. None of the villains he had fought before had thought of wearing a mask or were even that smart at all like Jeff. Kid Danger looked at him in disbelief. “Dude, not the time to be praising the villain,” He said in a hushed whisper.
“Right, what's the plan?” He asked.
Kid Danger’s lips pressed together and he snapped his fingers when an idea hit him. “We go through the back, I'll get the hostages and you stop the robber” He gestured his thumb to the back door with a small glowing red exit sign above it.
“Perfect plan I love it,” Captain Man said enthusiastically and bumped fists with Kid Danger before the two broke apart and began trekking past the small window and into the back door.
Ducking down Captain Man went first leading Kid danger inside. After getting inside he hid behind a wall in the back where he could see Captain Man enter the main lobby where the robber stood with two duffel bags of cash sitting beside him.
“Took you long enough Captain Man” The robber sneered at the man as he stood up straight and grasped a long pipe in his hand threateningly. Captain Man stopped in front of the man and held his hands out in front of him defensively.
His eyes raked over the group of people. But he couldn’t see any injuries. “What are your demands?” He questioned. They were in a standoff now.
“Where's your partner kid danger?” The robber questioned cautiously switching the topic, glancing around the room slightly.
Kid danger watched from afar bent down on his feet. “It’s just you and me,” He stammered lightly over his words.
“I want a truck,” He demanded.
“I can get you that” He nodded with his hands still raised in front of him.
“But you have to release the hostages you don’t need them,” He said reasoning as he gestured with his free hand toward the Hostages. “You have me,” He said persuasively pointing to his chest.
The robber nodded slightly behind the mask and with one hand still holding onto a long rusty pipe he used the other signaling for the people huddled together behind him to leave. Kid Danger peeked around the wall and ushered the small group of people towards him and there he led them out of the building and towards the exit.
“It isn’t far, follow me,” Kid Danger said encouragingly to the people behind him. A tall man dressed in all black with a costume mask covering his face stood in front of him blocking his way. “Going somewhere?” A gruff voice asked. Henry grits his teeth nervously. He didn’t think of there being a second robber.
The robber lunged forward and threw the first punch to the gut. Kid Danger dodged him then threw a punch of his own and the robber grabbed his arm and threw Kid Danger to the floor. From the floor, he could see the small group of hostages sneak past and escape through the exit.
When he hit the floor he went through a small coughing fit choking on his spit. He felt his stomach drop into his body before he rolled over on his elbows and spat on the floor. He dodged a kick to his head and got back up on his feet quickly.
It was like that for multiple minutes back and forth. The robber or Kid danger would punch the other and they would fall to the floor. But Kid Danger threw an uppercut to the robber's stomach and he finally fell.
He exhaled and nudged the robber into the leg before leaning over onto his knees to catch his breath. When he stood up he grinned at captain man proudly.
The robber pulled a small switchblade out from his jacket and lunged from the floor. Captain Man’s eyes widened. “Look out Kid” He had shouted before reaching out toward him. But it was too late. The villain stabbed the kid danger in his stomach from behind.
“Celebrate at” Kid Danger stopped speaking and he let out a small gasp in shock and pain. He looked down at his stomach, and there a small wooden handle of a blade protruded out of his stomach.
He brought his fingers up slowly to the handle and looked up at Captain Man fear in his eyes. The robber standing behind him grabbed his shoulder and pulled the knife harshly out of his stomach causing him to begin to stumble back with one hand holding onto the wound in his stomach and reach for the desk behind him.
Taking out his laser quickly, Captain Man zapped the second robber repeatedly until he passed out and hit the floor. Not bothering to put it up he dropped the laser to the ground as Kid Danger began to fall backwards. He caught kid danger in his arms before he hit the floor and leaned him against his chest.
He hesitated holding his hands above Kid dangers stomach not sure what to do. “Schwoz can fix this” He pressed his trembling hands firmly against Henry’s stomach trying to stop the bleeding. “Yea I’m sure he has a fancy tool,” He said nodding as he tried to sound nonchalant and not scared. Like he wasn't trying to convince himself.
Kid Danger grabbed one of Captain Man’s wrists leaving a bloody print across it. He was trying to get him to stop. “Not enough time” He whispered tiredly. He knew he wasn’t going to survive this.
His eyes began to close and Captain man nudged his shoulder. “I’m scared Ray” He croaked and when he did blood spit up out of his mouth down his chin sending him into a coughing fit. Ray held one hand to Henry's punctured stomach and wiped at the blood coming from his mouth with a frown. He didn't know what else he could do. Henry clutched Ray’s wrist on his stomach and grunted in pain.
Shifting Kid danger in his arms to where he was cradling his head against his chest protectively. “You’re gonna be okay” He whispered, choking on a sob as he ran his fingers through Henry’s short blood matted hair. Oh my god, there was so much blood. On his suit his hands in Henry's once bleach blonde hair.
“I’m not ready,” He whimpered. He had so much left to do he just graduated high school. Did his friends and sister know how much he loved them he thought worryingly. “You’re not you’re gonna go places kid you're gonna do things I’ve never even done,” Ray said persuasively. “You hear me,” Henry hummed tiredly, his eyelids closing and opening back and forth.
He just felt so tired. Henry's eyes closed and his breathing slowed until his chest stopped rising and his body went completely limp against Ray. “No” He repeated, panicky. Captain man shook him by the shoulders and he touched his face. Where his red mask lay missing next to Henry’s lifeless body.
“Wake up kid” He demanded. “C’mon,” He mumbled laughing dryly like it was all a joke and Henry was gonna pop out and say I got you. Captain Man sat there holding his sidekick against his chest in shock. Time slowly passed before he finally laid him gently down on the floor.
He stayed there, sat on his knees, grabbed the red mask, and held the fabric between his fingers. Wiping his forehead with the back of his glove he smeared blood on it. He stared emotionless at the red mask in shock for what felt like an hour before he finally slipped it onto Henry’s pale face before the police finally arrived.
He couldn’t stop asking himself what went wrong. Was it the plan? Was he not strong enough or too slow or was it long ago when he sent out the job application and made Henry say that stupid plague?
When he got back to the man cave he slipped away to his bedroom before the others noticed him. Still dressed in his captain man uniform that was soaked with blood he kicked the wall once and soon he had begun to lose control pulling the posters down from his walls and tearing them apart.
His best friend was dead, he died in his arms. How could he protect others if he couldn’t even protect his sidekick? Ray grabbed a lamp from his dresser and threw it against the wall shattering the bulb and screamed as loud as he could.
At that time the news turned on. He paused and turned to the television, tears falling freely down his cheeks. “This just in Kid danger is Dead”
Then his vision began to blur until he finally collapsed.
When Ray awoke he was sitting on the half-circle couch. The room was silent, with no one speaking, and no mission alerts. He felt numb to the world around him.
A single tear slipped down Charlotte's face as she mindlessly wiped a wet-washed rag across Ray’s face smearing blood across his cheeks and nose. Then dip it into a bowl of water. Rinse and repeat.
“Henry’s dead” He mumbled suddenly looking up at her. It was all coming back to him. The mission alerts the bank and the fight.
She stopped brushing the rag against his face and, avoiding eye contact, dropped the rag into the bowl. “I know,” She muttered in an almost whisper.
He looked around and realized where he was. He was in the man cave and not his bedroom anymore. “How’d I get here?” He asked disinterestedly.
“We found you unconscious on your bedroom floor” He nodded half listening to her as he bent down his elbows leaning on his knees and held his head between his hands.
Taking that as a sign she stepped away from him. Turning away from him Charlotte wiped the tear falling down her cheek discreetly. “Jasper is telling Piper,” Clearing her throat she continued.
“What happened out there?” Charlotte asked carefully.
“I don’t know we did everything like we always do.” He clenched his fist before he hit it against his knee exaggeratedly, stressing that part. “Henry got the hostages and I fought the robber,” He continued rambling letting it all pour out.
Ray grasped his head and tugged at his hair harshly. “But there were two” When he looked up at Charlotte his eyes were bloodshot red. At this point, tears ran down Charlotte's face faster than she could wipe them away.
He shook his head and choked back a sob. “He was there one minute and then he was gone the next” He was near hysterical now.

Iterations - a Lazytown Fic
My submission for @spookysecretfriendday as a gift to my secret friend @electricityisinmysoul
Summary: Sportacus begins to remember things that he should not. There used to be more people in Lazytown, and they had different names.
(to be cross-posted onto AO3)
__
It started with a sense of deja-vu.
Flashes of something as Sportacus went about his day, helping the townspeople and playing with the children. In a moment someone’s face would seem to change, or he would feel the wrong name at the tip of his tongue. Sportacus ignored it. He had a whole town and its children to keep him busy.
As summer drew to a close and the leaves of Lazytown’s lush trees began to change, the children returned to school, and so were eager to run and burn off all of their excess energy in the evenings–teaching the other children what they had learned in their physical education classes, and asking Sportacus for clarification of any rules they might have forgotten. It was the kind of studying that Sportacus found that he could get behind.
 Still the days became somewhat lonely with only the danger-prone adults for company.
 Sportacus had more free time to think.
Sometimes as he jogged down the empty streets Sportacus could have sworn that they had once been filled by a whole ensemble of townsfolks of all ages. In the back of his mind he could hear their voices, see their faces, and then he’d blink and they’d be gone again. He felt as though he were dreaming even as he was awake.
Solitude was not new to Sportacus, he knew that he had been alone many times in his life. His memory was as clear as a script, as sharp as thorns.
But the feeling was eerie.
On some days the only person he spotted before three o’clock was Robbie. It seemed that the villain had decided to take advantage of the quiet the school year provided by napping more conspicuously above ground. He sprawled out in benches, in patches of sunlight, and sometimes even in soft colorful piles of fallen leaves–Sportacus made a point not to step on him, no matter where he lay.
 When the bells signaling the end of the school day sounded the villain would either pick up his pillow and slouch off, or roll over and snooze on until one of the children tripped over him.
Despite himself, Sportacus found his adversary’s presence comforting. In a world that was quickly becoming full of echoes the antagonist’s presence felt comforting. Solid. Like he was supposed to be there.
~~~
It came to a head one day as the children were dancing, full of energy after a long day of sitting at desks. Pixel had brought out a sound system and set it up along the basketball court, and Stephanie and Trixie had decided to compete to see who was the better dancer–the entire contest was to be choreographed and judged by Stingy who had taken the leadership role with vigor.
Sportacus watched from the side, learning the choreography along with the girls and hopping and flipping along to the beat. Ziggy had already declared the hero as the best dancer before Sportacus reminded the boy that he was not technically a part of the contest.
As Stephanie had finished off with a flourish Sportacus found himself clapping enthusiastically, bounding towards the girls-
“Great job Solla!”
And with that utterance something clicked.
Sportacus could feel himself freeze as the girls turned to him simultaneously, confusion written across their faces. It was like seeing double, even as he looked at his own young friends they seemed to flash in and out, a riot of color and body types and names echoing within his skull.
“Who’s Solla? Stephanie asked, even as she warped and changed shape before his eyes. There were so many, different faces and eyes and hair, all with the same expression of earnest confusion.
“Ah... No one…” Sportacus chuckled nervously. Even as he glanced away the other children seemed to shift, hauntingly it seemed like there were new children, or children who he’d somehow forgotten, dancing at the edges of his vision. Over Ziggy’s shoulder a youth in a green beanie stood, his expression sleepy and warm. Sportacus blinked and the youth’s hat turned yellow as his face changed, then before his eyes the youth vanished. “You just looked like someone I knew a long time ago for a moment there Stephanie!”
After the hero’s reassurance the other children seemed to relax, looking at one another and laughing. Trixie nodded and rejoined the group, while Stephanie lingered. She seemed unconvinced, but said no more. With some effort Sportacus pulled himself together and they continued their games, dancing along to the music as though there weren’t unseen children dancing along with them.
Robbie approached him the next day.
~~~
It was yet another lonely morning, mist hung about in the streets obscuring empty neighborhoods that Sportacus had never taken the time to look at before. It soaked the piles of leaves on the ground, sending a chill spray through the air as the hero jogged through them. The children–however many of them there were–were at school, Bessie was puttering about her house, and Mayor Meanswell was in his office. He had not seen Robbie yet.
Try as he might, Sportacus found that he could not picture any other adults in this town. Logically he knew that the children had parents, that the post office and grocery store functioned, that a police station stood proud and tall on Main Street, but there was no whisper of voices inhabiting these places.
Sportacus jogged on.
Just as he was nearing the end of his run he spotted Robbie, who was approaching him with purpose, his prominent features and bright clothing shining like a lighthouse through the persistent mist.
The villain strode up to him with uncharacteristic speed, the cold morning light moving through lingering mist and twisting the villain’s features. At one moment Robbie’s face seemed to stretch and rubberize until only a particularly dead-eyed puppet remained, the next he seemed just a man. His features became less and then more exaggerated until they settled upon the familiar shape and profile.
“You’re slipping Sportadork.” Robbie sneered at Sportacus’s flabbergasted expression. “Come with me.”
~~~
Robbie’s lair looked the same as ever.
Sportacus found himself walking behind Robbie through a ground level entrance–the difference from the status quo simultaneously dreamlike and unsettling–and down a set of winding stairs into the main atrium where the villain’s orange chair sat. This as well was the same as ever. It was only the eerie silence from Robbie, and Sportacus’s own measured footsteps that were different.
Robbie led them further inside.
Off a hallway, deep in the bowels of the earth was an office space, a desk and two chairs. One a large pink wing-back, and the other plain and wooden. They sat.
“My name is Glanni Glæpur.” The villain began, something haunting in his eyes. For a moment his distinctive features shined like plastic. Sportacus blinked. “And you’re Íþróttaálfurinn.”
It was a long name, multisyllabic and heavily accented in a way that echoed the way that Sportacus himself spoke. There had been times when Robbie’s cadence had matched his like a set, but his inflection was usually less profound. Now he seemed to speak with an echo, as though two languages were coming through at once.
“At least-” Robbie continued, seemingly choosing his words carefully “Those are our names most of the time. Like how you called Pinkie Solla, and how her little friend Tricky is Halla.”
It sounded familiar. Sportacus didn’t want to believe Robbie, but as the words left the villain’s mouth it felt as though something had clicked into place in Sportacus’s brain, like changing gears on a bicycle. Íþróttaálfurinn. Já, ég er Íþróttaálfurinn.
“Robbie” Sportacus continued, not quite ready to try out these new–old–names. “What is going on? How do you know all of this?”
In response Robbie sighed, his expression exhausted. He rubbed his face with a long-fingered hand and when the hand fell away his face had changed. His hair was messier, his chin less distinct. Even his makeup had smeared, taking away the fine arch that had been painted meticulously upon his brow.
“Every story needs a hero, and most of them need a villain too.” Robbie–Glanni?–began. “I know I’m a villain, an antagonist, I talk about it all the time. It doesn’t matter because no one takes what I say too seriously, so my knowledge doesn’t interrupt the narrative.”
The what?
“The narrative” Robbie responded, as though Sportacus had spoken aloud. In truth he had simply pulled a remarkably dramatic face. “The story. You’re the hero, I’m the villain, and all of the children in town are audience stand-ins who exist to move the narrative forward.”
This was making less and less sense. Sportacus’s heart and thoughts raced, but he listened on. Robbie seemed honest--desperate even.
As Robbie spoke on he stood, his arms raising as his gestures became more and more emphatic. “Bessie and the Mayor are supporting characters. There were other adults, they’re gone now, and the kids keep changing. I think it’s because the audience is changing too, I don’t know. All I do know is that every time the story repeats it gets a little more streamlined.”
“Wait wait wait Robbie!” Sportacus stood as well, stepping in Robbie’s path to stop his pacing. “The story? The Audience? What are you suggesting?!”
“What I’m telling you” Robbie’s face morphed again, this time right in front of Sportacus’s eyes, the change made him dizzy as the villain’s face lengthened again into the frightening rubber puppet. For a moment he looked almost like the rest of the town folks–by the stars the town folks looked like Robbie.
“What I’m telling you is that we’re not real Sportaflop! We were characters in a book, actors in a play that repeated over and over, and now we’re in the middle of something else…” Robbie trailed off “Something else, something that doesn’t repeat itself the same way.”
For a moment silence lingered between them as Sportacus struggled to process the half-formed memories and impressions that rose up from deep within his mine.
“We were men on a plane…” Spotacus finally whispered, his head fuller than it had ever been, stuffed tight with echoes and colors and melodies.
“NO!” Robbie stopped abruptly. “Never ever think back that far. Don’t try to remember that.” He reached a quick fingered hand to tug at Sportacus’s mustache and the sharp pain made him blink. Robbie’s face had returned to normal. “Those men aren’t us, and dwelling on them won’t help us.”
“Okay.” Sportacus agreed. It felt like all of his energy had left him, as surely as if he’d taken a bite from a cupcake, or sprinted to the North Pole and back. “Okay Robbie, then what will?”
“Play your part.” Robbie responded, his eyes serious. “Play it well, don’t create any reason for changes or rewrites, don’t focus too much on the children or on Mayor Meanswell and Bessie. If they keep doing what they’re doing, maybe they’ll last. They’ve made it this far.”
“What happened to the other people?” It was cold in the lair, and Sportacus was tired. More and more Robbie’s words seemed true for all that the very idea was ridiculous. There was no other way to explain why he remembered songs that he’d never sung, people that he had never met.
The whole strange tale of Glanni Glæpur’s gambit of enslaving Lazytown and locking Solla and Halla away was clear in his mind, as though he’d lived it and then lived it again and again. Clear as a script, as sharp as thorns
“I think they must have been written out.” Said Robbie, whose voice was unsure for the first time since their conversation had begun. “They weren’t useful to the story anymore–it keeps changing.”
Sportacus nodded, before asking “Will that happen to us?”
Robbie shrugged, his normal formalwear seemed wrong now, to Sportacus’s eye, as though it was taking the place of the black catsuit or the pink coat. He ignored the feeling.
“Maybe this is the last version of the story that will be told. Maybe not.”
