Excerpt:
Lying is easy for her now, like a bird lifting its wings to fly. She watches one do just that, flapping around the small enclosed space of the rookery, full of other ravens and droppings and stone perches. Knowledge is freedom for the birds; no matter the weight of the words they carry, each scroll is an opportunity for them to fly in the open sky. I must do the same, use what I know to set us all free.
A maiden returns to her snow castle, and a boy remembers how to be a man instead of a wolf. At Winterfell, they would be safe but for a mockingbird and emerging desires.
Read Bird on the wing on AO3.

"I'd burn the world for you."
"Oh but its already burning in wars and hate and greed."
"I can bring you the stars and the moon..."
"For what really? I have no use of either."
"Well, I'd do anything for you; you say the word."
"Anything, as in ANYTHING?"
"ANYTHING!"
"Then save me."
"From what?"
"From myself."
"I don't think I understand..."
"Save me from my maddening thoughts, my nightmares that don't let me sleep, my fears that make me shiver even in midsummer nights, my desires that make me want to runaway and never be found, my urges to set my soul free from this wretched humanly existence. Save me from myself."

Picture Translation, an excerpt from the book 'The City and Its Uncertain Walls' by Haruki Murakami: …a plain dark green waistcoat. He wasn't wearing a necktie, but he always wore clean, if slightly old-fashioned, clothes. Such commonplace middle-aged male attire could hardly be said to fit with a skirt (plus tights), but he did not seem to mind this in the slightest. And perhaps the people of the town have been witnesses of such a sight for so long that they don’t even pay attention to it anymore.
My days in Z** town passed by in uneventful fashion. I embraced my new daily routine, gradually moulding my mind and body to it. As the late summer heat came to an end, autumn deepened, and the mountains surrounding the town were beautifully coloured with various tints of autumn foliage. On my days off, I would take solitary walks along mountain paths, savouring the fine arts crafted by nature. In the midst of all this, the unavoidable sense of impending winter began to linger. Autumn in the mountains is brief.
“It will start snowing soon”, Koyasu said as he stood in front of the window before leaving, carefully watching the movement of the clouds. His somewhat small hands were firmly clasped behind his back.
“There’s this scent lingering in the air. Winter is quick to set in around here. You’d better get yourself a pair of snowshoes.”
34
On the evening of the first snowfall (it was almost the end of November), after finishing my work at the library, I went into town to buy some snowshoes. It was still just a flurry of snow, but if it were to start falling more heavily, the soft, city-style shoes I had brought with me from Tokyo would not be suitable for walking on such a snowy day.
The snow that began to fall reminded me of life in that walled city. In winter, it often snows even in that city. And in the snow, many single-horned beasts died.
But what kind of shoes did I wear in that city?
I was given shoes by the city (all my clothes and equipment were provided by the city) and I wore them every day on the winter streets. The snow was never that deep, but the surface of the roads was hard and frozen, so it was possible to slip on them…

Diagramming Modernity: Books and Graphic Design in Latin America, 1920–1940 This massive publication offers the first comprehensive panorama of the Latin American illustrated book between the 1920s and 1940s, a period characterized by the region's rapid modernization. The books reproduced here encapsulate this transformative era, expressing and embodying emergent national and continental narratives in Latin American countries.
Diagramming Modernity reproduces more than 1,000 illustrated first editions, analyzing the cornucopia of cultural narratives they contain. In addition to showcasing relatively unknown work by many consecrated artists, the publication also boasts an extensive repertoire of avant-garde artists largely forgotten until today.
Chapters are devoted to countries and to specific themes such as Word-Image, Verbal Visualities, Pre-Columbianisms and Ancestralisms, and Social and Political Graphics.
Writers and thinkers Rodrigo Gutiérrez Viñuales, Riccardo Boglione, Juan Manuel Bonet, Mariana Garone Gravier and Dafne Cruz Porchini conscientiously investigate these themes and more.
Edited by Rodrigo Gutiérrez Viñuales and Riccardo Boglione

currently reading 'racism and racial discrimination in malaysia: a historical & class perspective' by kua kia soong who was arrested and detained as a socialist in singapore and is a major marxist scholar who has spent his career exposing and analyzing the relationship between racism and capitalism in malaysia going back to the british colonial era and discussing how gov policies and actions since independence have perpetuated the racist structures put in place during imperial rule because it benefits the ruling capitalist class. i've read it before and it's genuinely the best book on the subject for anyone interested in understanding how capitalism and racism are fundamentally linked in malaysia, it's such a good book

Picture Translations:
"As we all know, love must only be reinvented." -A Season In Hell: Ravings I, Arthur Rimbaud
If so, can the concepts of free will and liberalism related to love be coalesced into one?
Effectively, I think that both the concept of 'free will' and that of 'liberalism' reaches towards the idea that love is nothing more than a fruitless danger. On one hand, you have the married couple that has somewhat prepared to continue on in a relationship that is sweetened with consumption (conjugalité) and on the other hand, we can reasonably conclude that there are sexual relationships, whilst not consuming passion, are filled with pleasure and joy. In the world of today, love is ensnared within this net and under this oppression and it is precisely why I think that it is being threatened. Of course there are many other things that serve to do this, but primarily I think that it falls upon philosophy to protect it from this threat. As the poet Arthur Rimbaud pointed out, another condition for this is that love must be reinvented. This is also extremely different from simply adopting a defensive manner in order to preserve something. Truthfully, the world is full of new things; similarly, love must also be an object that innovates. Against safety and comfort, risks and adventures must invent themselves again too.
