That Vampire Show, our fiction podcast about fandom, turned 1 year old this week!

Hey Everyone! Our fiction podcast, That Vampire Show, turned one this week. Season 1 follows Kat Wright, a high school senior who is obsessed with the hit TV show, “Bloodlines.” After winning a fan fiction writing contest for the show, Kat is given the chance to visit set and meet the cast and crew. When the trip doesn’t go as planned — and she and the creator of the show, Warren Young, have a major fight — Kat’s life and the future of “Bloodlines” both spiral out of control.

Season 1 was 10 full length episodes, and 8 mini episodes that explored the world of "Bloodlines," the vampire hunter teen TV show within our podcast. Season 1 was written by me (Marissa Tandon @marissakumari, creator of Super Ordinary and The Sword & The Stoner), Gabriel Urbina (Wolf359), Alex Whisenhunt (His Royal Fakin' Highness, Life on Pause) and Cassidy Lu Jones. Season 2 is heading into production this month (we're currently casting for a few new roles) and a new writer, Berklie Novak-Stolz (who you may know here as @icaruspendragon) joined us for the writers room.

That Vampire Show is a love letter to fandom and creatives alike, and we had such a fun time making the show, and are so excited to bring season 2 to everyone!

We're hard at work on the second season of our fiction podcast, That Vampire Show! The whole first season is available to listen to for free now while you wait-- But what's it all about?

In short: Kat Wright and Warren Young. Kat's like most of us on this website: she's incredibly stressed and overwhelmed, and she copes with that by hyper-fixating on her favorite TV show. It's called Bloodlines, and it centers on twin siblings Bex and Callum Rainier, who come from a long line of Vampire hunters.

They've also got an arch nemesis of sorts: Luther. He's a centuries old vampire who came to town with one goal -- fulfill a hit on Bex and Callum.

Kat loves Callum. He's her baby boy, her little guy, her sweet cheese. And she writes a lot of fan fic for him, mostly dealing with his humanity and his need for redemption. Warren hates the way the fandom obsesses over Luther, who he views as a simple, clear cut villain motivated by evil.

So... he picks Kat's fic to be the winner of the contest. Which means she comes to set, meets the cast, and has a big run in with Warren himself. Their collision course derails Kat's senior year, and changes the future of Bloodlines forever.

We also wanted this show to be a proper love letter to fandom and the community that comes out of it -- which is why the show is interactive, with Kat's online profiles fully accessible. She's right here on this hellsite @9lives6ftunder, and her fan fiction is available on AO3 (including some works that are not featured in the show itself!). There are even online only characters that you might hear from in the canon someday soon, but incredible fan art made in world is usually highlighted on @benditlikebrooklyn.

That Vampire Show is for you if you obsessed over shows like Supernatural, Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, or Buffy The Vampire Slayer, loved the Simon Snow trilogy, or have ever read fan fiction, written fan fiction, or spent too much time thinking about fictional characters. In the first episode of You Are What You Love Marissa Tandon and Lauren Grace Thompson explain that the reason young women love Dean Winchester is because they identify not with the successful, emotionally intelligent women they see in media, but with the emotionally challenged fuckups represented in media, who are generally men.

To complete the fandom cycle:

I, who falls into almost the exact same demographic as Kat from That Vampire Show (created by Marissa as an exploration of fandom), find Warren to be a more interesting character.

Why? Because Kat’s angst hits too close to home. I can’t enjoy angst about college applications and parental expectations, because I’m neck deep in that hellhole IRL. But Warren? A guy who at his best sucks, who’s ruined his best relationships for his career, and who is probably about to commit copyright offences on AO3. That has nothing to do with me. That’s angst that feels good to consume.

I’m feeling brave, so @tandonshows, bracing for impact, and I hope this goes down better than Kat’s attempt at communicating with the creator of her favourite media.

I think my favorite thing about Fionna and Cake has to be how unapologetically queer it is. In every corner, whether it be a cameo appearance from the gay couple,

a quick visual cue/reference to the pilot,

a questionable line from Brian David Gilbert of all people,

or actually being integral to the primary or secondary plot.

Seeing such a casual yet important and beautiful inclusion of queerness in this show fills me with such indescribable joy. Without even trying, without even stepping away from it's own story, it's making a statement.

Without going out of its way, it's teaching genuine stories while saying "We are here, we have a place, we have a history, and we're here to stay."
