At first, Peter was flattered when Ms. Stark told him over their weekly video chats that she was working on Morgan’s replica of the first ever Spider-Man suit she’d made for him. The five year old had begged her moms to be Spider-Man for Halloween and Peter was delighted to hear it. Of course, Morgan’s suit hadn’t been fitted with actual web-shooters or a drone or any of the combative tech Peter’s had had. But still, it was cool that his little sister was so excited to show off that he was her favorite superhero. Even cooler was the weeks leading up to Halloween being spent helping Ms. Stark in assembling the suit. It was an easy project, both of them knew the first suit inside out like the backs of their hands. Plus, Peter loved the time spent with his adoptive mother.
Morgan had squealed in delight and ran to hug Peter’s legs when she saw the final product. Excitedly, she insisted on suiting up immediately for a photo shoot on her mother’s phone. Peter joined too, in his own suit. Pepper ended up printing some of the photos for her office. The two played in the yard, swinging from the trees for hours. Morgan ended up falling asleep in the costume, having vehemently refused to take it off for dinner let alone bedtime. It was precious, Peter had to admit.
Secondly, Peter had laughed when Toni showed him her “costume”. A comically oversized Spider-Man plush hooded onesie. He couldn’t believe she’d even bought the thing after he jokingly showed it to her during one of his visits home. It was comfortable, Toni had claimed, and was minimal effort. Also, apparently Morgan insisted they all dress as Spider-Man for Halloween. Used to getting her way, Morgan had come up with a compelling argument anyway. “Because it will be cool!” Was more than enough for Toni.
Then, he got red in the face when Gwen told him one night in the middle of October that she was going to be dressing up as Spider-Man for Halloween. She’d heard Peter offhandedly mention that Morgan and Toni were going to dress up as him and was sold on the idea. After meeting Gwen in his chemistry lab at ESU, Peter had fallen head over heels for the blonde. They weren’t dating, not exactly. Peter was in what was commonly known as the “talking” phase but Gwen had once dropped the term “mutually exclusive” after they’d eaten themselves close to food comas following an all-nighter spent studying. The memories of it still make Peter’s heart stutter. Mutually exclusive was good, right? That meant she wasn’t talking to anyone else. That meant she wasn’t having study dates with anyone else. Everything they did was specially for him and her, no one else.
But then, there was the shopping. Having his not-girlfriend dressing up as Spider-Man meant he had to help her with her costume, especially after she found out about his internship. Still, Peter was a young man. Sitting in a fitting room while your not-girlfriend tries on form-fitting red dress after form-fitting red dress is enough to make anyone’s head spin. He had to be respectful like May and Ben taught him and nod along with every option shown to him. He’d sprinkle in a compliment here and there, just to see that pretty blush on her face. Soon, Peter realized he wasn’t being really helpful in the actual task at hand but Gwen appreciated his effort nonetheless. Gwen landed on a dress that Peter was certain was more appropriate for a frat party than anything else, but she looked great so he didn’t say anything. Tight and short dress, red with black accents and some spider web jewelry. Black spiderweb tights and red pumps, Peter couldn’t forget the pumps. It was an ensemble modeled after his upgraded suit from his disastrous trip to Europe that no one seemed to remember anymore.
Gwen was only dressing up because Peter had agreed that they’d both accompany the Starks to a Halloween party thrown at the Avenger’s Compound. Toni and Pepper wanted to meet the girl they heard so much about from their lovestruck adoptive son. Morgan, still in her jealousy phase, claimed to hate Gwen for taking so much of her older brother’s attention. But, Peter knew his little sister would come around once she met the older girl.
So, on the weekend before Halloween, Peter led Gwen with his arm to the back of Happy Hogan’s car. His denim jacket and vest were draped over her exposed shoulders and back. It only took a single shiver out of her perfectly painted lips for him to give up part of his costume to keep her warm.
“I can’t believe you’re Marty McFly,” Gwen had hissed before laughing. A loud carefree kind of laugh that Peter drank in like a favorite song.
“Why not,” Peter had screeched in defense, “He’s cool!”
“You’re cute,” Gwen laughed again. He blushed at that.
Happy rolled up the divider before Peter could mumble anything in response.
“You look really pretty,” Peter said, “Like you usually do but you look, like, super pretty tonight.”
“Thank you,” Gwen replied with the sultry shrug of a shoulder and a wink that made Peter’s blood rush. He turned away to hide his blushing face against the window. After a quiet few minutes, she laid her head on his shoulder. Her curled hair smelled like flowers from where it draped down Peter’s arm. He was content.
Upon arrival, Peter was immediately greeted.
“PETEY!” Morgan screeched from the porch swing. She was already in her costume, the mask hanging off the top of her head, when she ran towards Happy’s car.
Peter looked at Gwen with a smile on his face, earning him a sweet smile in return. He opened the door and caught two armfuls of baby sister just as he’s able to stand.
“Oof,” Peter grunted as he hauled Morgan onto his hip, “Hey, Mo!”
“What are you dressing as, Petey?” Morgan asked excitedly, “You have to change, quick!”
“I’m in my costume, Mongoose!” Peter replied with a furrowed brow, “My, uh, friend is using my jacket but I’m Marty. You remember Marty McFly, dontcha?”
Morgan’s little face twisted in confusion, making Peter laugh. The teen turned around, swinging his baby sister along with him before he held a hand out for Gwen to take.
“Why thank you,” Gwen said with another wink that warmed Peter’s face, “Such a gentleman.”
“Who are you?” Morgan asked with scowl.
Gwen took it in stride, as perfect as she was. She just smiled beautifully as ever and allowed her not-boyfriend to escort her from the car to the Stark family private entrance of the Compound.
“My name is Gwen,” She said gracefully, Peter’s eyes shone in admiration for her, “I go to school with Peter.”
“Why are you wearing his jacket?” Morgan asked with her nose scrunched in apparent disgust.
“I was cold,” Gwen answered simply, “And your brother really is a gentleman.”
“Mamma does that for Mommy when we go on morning walks,” Morgan admitted, her face formed into a more pensive expression, “But that’s because she loves her.”
Peter swore his heart slipped right out of his ass at that moment. He could easily see where his baby sister was going with this and he could not handle that kind of embarrassment tonight.
“Hey, Mo,” Peter interrupted, bouncing Morgan in his arms to get her full attention, “Why don’t you tell Mamma we’re here? I want to see your matching costumes!”
Morgan gasped loudly, looking at Peter with wide eyes. She then wiggled her way out of Peter’s arms and onto her own feet.
Peter would have cried in relief when she turned and sprinted towards the Compound's doors, yelling for their mother. Instead, he sighed under his breath.
“Mamma, Mamma!” Morgan screamed as she ran, “Petey’s home!”
“Nice save,” Gwen laughed quietly, “She’s adorable.”
“Yeah,” Peter blushed, a hand rubbing the back of his neck, “She’s the best.”
Gwen had younger brothers, but she didn’t really have a relationship with them anymore. Peter knew family was a sore subject for the blonde, so he never pried. He was starting to realize he’d brought her to a family event and was introducing his not-girlfriend to his entire family.
“You okay?” Gwen asked, her beautiful face falling slightly in concern. She shrugged his jacket off and handed it back to him with one hand, the other grabbing one of his.
“Yeah, I’m great,” Peter said with a small smile, “You look beautiful tonight. I wish I brought my camera.”
Gwen searched his eyes for something, what it was, Peter wasn’t sure. She must’ve found it, if the kiss she pressed to the corner of his mouth told him anything.
The two walked into the Compound hand-in-hand once Peter put his jacket back on. They were immediately greeted by the sight of Toni Stark in an oversized Spider-Man plush onesie with Morgan on her hip.
“My first born!” Toni called out with grandiose, setting Morgan down on her feet again, “How are you, Pumpkin?”
“I’m good, Ms. Stark,” Peter said with a smile as the genius came up to hug him, “Nice costume.”
“He’s my hero.” Toni shrugged, “Best guy in the business. Better than all of us.”
Peter said nothing to that, he knew how much his adoptive mother loved to dote on her children. Instead, he introduced her to his plus one.
“Ms. Stark, this is Gwen,” Peter said with a gesture to the blonde in question, “Gwen, this is my, uh, mom.”
“My goodness,” Toni cried, taking Gwen in, “You’re gorgeous!”
Gwen batted her eyes and flipped her perfect hair, soaking in the praise, “Thank you, so are you.”
“She’s beautiful, Peter,” Toni smiled, hugging the young woman in front of her, “My baby boy knows how to pick ‘em!”
“Ms. Stark!” Peter cried in indignation. She was embarrassing him.
“He’s quite the stunner himself,” Gwen retorted, loving the way Peter’s blush deepened, “ESU’s resident pretty boy.”
“What’s this I’m overhearing?” A voice from behind them sounded, the sound of heels clicking approaching.
“Mommy!” Morgan yelled in excitement, running towards Pepper Potts-Stark as she strutted in all her glory. She was dressed in navy blue slacks and a rich velvet blazer. Underneath the blazer, Peter noticed a specific shade of red.
“Oh my goodness,” Peter cried, “You didn’t.”
Underneath Pepper’s expensive blazer was a T-shirt that emulated the Spider-Man suit’s torso. The shirt with the webbing and the logo, even down to a printed texture, was obviously a Stark creation.
“The memo was we were all dressing as Spider-Man,” Pepper said simply with a shrug.
“So,” Peter began, his head reeling, “Everyone’s dressed as Spider-Man except for me?”
“And you have the most authentic suit, made from Spidey himself,” Toni reminded him.
“And you dressed as Manny McTie or whatever,” Morgan grumbled with a pout. An eruption of laughter creased her brow in annoyance.
“It’s Marty McFly, Mowgli,” Peter corrected as he hefted his baby sister onto his hip.
“Whatever,” She huffed.
“A very handsome Marty McFly,” Pepper interjected, pulling her adopted son in for a hug, “It’s nice to see you, sweetheart.”
“You too, Ms. Potts,” Peter replied as he leaned into her touch, Morgan also soaking in some of the residual warmth of her mother. Though he was adopted and had been since Ben died during the blip, he still couldn’t bring himself to call Pepper ‘Mom’; Toni either. It was something he felt only Mary Parker should have the right to, after all. But the same way Ben was his father, he knew Ms. Stark and Ms. Potts were his mothers. They’d taken him in when he had no one else in the world out there for him. They gave him a family when he needed it most and he never felt more grateful. Calling them by their given names was just as much a term of endearment as anything else he could call them.
“And this lovely lady must be Gwen,” Pepper smiled at the blonde, shaking her perfectly manicured hand, “You look stunning tonight, honey.”
“Thank you,” Gwen preened with a cute nose scrunch that made Peter fall a little harder every time she did it, “And thank you for letting me come, I’ve been so excited to meet you all.”
“Of course,” Toni waved her off, “We’ve been itching to meet the girl who’s stolen my little Bambi’s heart.”
“Ms. Stark!” Peter cried in embarrassment, looking away from Gwen who giggled then pressed a kiss to his blushing cheek. He feels her swiping off residual lipstick with her thumb as she continues to giggle some more.
With the banter already beginning and Peter already feeling embarrassed in front of this girl he really liked, he knew it was going to be a long night. But, that night was going to be filled with friends, family, and festive fun. Peter couldn’t ask for anything better.
