“I am VENUS”

(spoiler alert)

What better way to close out my final blog for Afrofuturism, than with the fearless, extraordinary, ground-breaking, BAD ASS women of “Black Panther?” The 2018 movie "Black Panther" is a conventional Marvel action film with an uncommon cast. A significant portion of the action is carried out by the female primary characters, who are not only there to further the objectives of the male protagonist. Each of them has a distinct plan and purpose. The film alters these modes of representational performance via the expressive qualities of Afrofuturism. Internalizing the multifaceted nature of Blackness via using the lens of Afrofuturism as a means of comprehending black experience gives a legacy of pride, as well as a sense of belonging that facilitates one's connection to a Pan-African culture. The film has the capacity to provide a hopeful vision of Africa because it uses futuristic themes as its foundation. Beyond the cliches of civil society, an entirely novel image of Africa is emerging. Modern, technically passionate, skilled, powerful, and most importantly liberated women are shown in the new image.

Black Panther establishes early on that it is not your typical superhero film, whereby the women are docile and the male character must come to their rescue. On the contrary, the women of Wakanda are not only able to manage their own positions but are the true backbone of the nation because to their leadership and remarkable gifts. Not only does Black Panther feature Okoye, the bold and fierce general of the Dora Milaje, but also Nakia, a super spy and valiant fighter. Whenever T'Challa has doubts concerning his own capacity for leadership, his mother, Queen Ramonda, reassures him. Shuri, T'Challa's younger sister, is perhaps the most brilliant person in Wakanda and the genius behind the majority of the country's modern technological advancements, including his spectacular suit and the weaponry he equips. T'Challa is defended by his all-female private armed force, the Dora Milaje. Nevertheless, it is the women of Wakanda that support T'Challa when his strength is at his most vulnerable, allowing him to reclaim his throne. Rather of being stereotypes of marginalized Black women, the characters of Queen Ramonda, Shuri, Nakia, and Okoye are fully formed, pivotal players who elevate the film to great heights.

Black Panther transcends the medium of film. This Afrofuturist element transports us to a universe where the melanin of fierce women is the deep, beautiful shade seldom seen in mainstream Hollywood productions. It is revolutionary that intelligent, powerful, and stunning Black women of color are finally being represented in mainstream in a positive light. Black women in film need not play the damsel-in-distress archetype; this film demonstrated that strong, independent women may find love and be happy. As a daughter, and as a mother of two beautiful black daughters it overjoys me and transcends my soul that they have a clear vision of who and what they can be, and who and what they are, and the connection they will always have to their ancestors, like my mother and grandmother (RIP).

Fighting for good, one widow bite at the time: Black Widow's cultural impact

Critics scoff when I call the Black Widow movie a favorite, but hear me out. It deserved a better release window, maybe at an earlier time, when things would've been viewed differently. Sure, it doesn't rise up what it could've been, leaving so much lingering dreams in the hearts of us, fans. So much potential remains untapped, so many questions unanswered... but Natasha Romanoff? She rises above it all. If you doubt her power, think again, and as I said, hear me out.

Black Widow, the assasin with steely eyes that hide and protect a heart of gold, has transcended the screen to become a cultural icon. From her first appereance in the MCU in Iron Man 2 (2010) to Black Widow (2021), she truly went through a lot, took us with her, and thaught everyone some lessons on the way.

Shattering the mold of the damsel in distress: She's no sidekick, she's a strategist and a fierce fighter. She is a vital member of the Avengers, that's a fact we saw in the 2012 movie. After all, how many characters can you name that tricked the God of Mischief? Nat didn't only do it exceptionally, she is the first we saw doing this on screen.

Reclaiming Narrative: Unlike many superheroes defined by singular origins, Black Widow carried the trauma of a dark past, manipulated by the Red Room, a notorious spy program. Her movie explored this narrative, acknowledging the exploitation and abuse she endured. This resonated with survivors of violence and abuse, offering validation and representation. Her journey of breaking free from her past resonated on a broader level, highlighting themes of resilience, empowerment, and overcoming hardship. Furthermore, she hasn't always been a hero, an avenger. "Regimes fall everyday. I tend not to weep over that, I'm russian" and "I've got red in my ledger. I'd like to wipe it out" show how she's not just using the power she already has, but has the power to change as well. This isn't about brute force, it's about internal struggle and choosing to become a better version of herself despite her history.

Sisterhood and Solidarity: Black Widow's story wasn't solely focused on herself. In "Black Widow," she teams up with other women who share similar experience, even if at first this doesn't seem to work, indoctrinated as they are in the Red Room programme. This depiction of female solidarity resonated with audiences, particularly feminist movements advocating for women's support networks and collective action.

Representation Matters: Black Widow's portrayal as a skilled leader and strategist challenged existing portrayals of Russian characters in Hollywood. They are often depicted as villains or stereotypes, but her complex identity sparked conversations about diversity and representation within the superhero genre.

Defying stereotypes: As the sole original female Avenger, Black Widow carried a unique weight. She didn't need superpowers or a revealing suit — her determination and arsenal spoke for themselves. That's true power. I mean, in some situations she only had two cool firearms, but did better than Captain America with a vibranium shield! I also love how her costume evolved over time, prioritizing functionality over sexualization. Ditching the impractical neckline in her solo movie? A much-needed win! It shows that Black Widow commands respect through her actions, not her body.

Her impact and importance punches like her combat skills, if you ask me.

Author Spotlight: Apolline Lucy

This week, we're excited to bring you a guest essay titled Exploring the Dark and the Romantic in my Upcoming Novel: THE SILVER BIRDS from author Apolline Lucy. THE SILVER BIRDS will be released on September 26, 2023.

When the idea for my novel struck me, I immediately knew I wanted it to be a sapphic enemies-to-lovers story. Sapphic, because I wanted to write about women; enemies-to-lovers because I basically live for this trope. But I didn’t want romance to be at its core. I wanted to craft characters filled with rage and wants for revenge, characters so fiercely protective of the ones they trust enough to love, that they became monsters.

By mixing gore—the visceral, the violent, and the gruesome—and sapphic—love, desire, and identity—I wanted to explore the darkest corners of human existence, defy expectations, and create a space for queer characters to exist outside the confines of heteronormative narratives. My novel isn’t about characters being lesbian—they just happen to be. It’s about them grappling with their own demons and external threats.

That being said, the horror elements in THE SILVER BIRDS do serve as a metaphor for the discrimination and violence LGBTQ+ individuals have historically faced. The book explores the themes of survival and resilience, reflecting the real battles queer people face in their daily lives. But it’s more than just thrills; it's about empowerment. It’s about wanting to give voice to characters from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and identities, and make fantasy a more inclusive and richer genre.

As THE SILVER BIRDS is self-published, I had the freedom to explore taboos and delve deep into themes of obsession, vengeance, and the blurred lines between love and violence. Some scenes are quite graphic and might have faced heavy censorship in traditional publishing. But I believe they challenge readers to confront uncomfortable truths and question the boundaries of desire, love, and violence.

Despite the darkness, my novel ultimately celebrates sapphic love. It’s a reminder that love is a powerful force, even in the face of adversity. I’m committed to writing happy endings because the world is already a terrible place, and I want my books to offer an escape. Yes, I will torture my characters, present them with impossible choices, and reveal terrible consequences for their actions. But I will also grant them happy endings. Love must triumph, even in the darkest of places.

Yab Yum in Tantra Talon Abraxas

the stages of outer inner, and other are united within the One Wisdom. This is the root of Vajrayana. It summarizes all.

EVAM Yab yum carries a deep symbolic significance. The deities in Yab Yum, or sexual union, symbolize masculine and feminine principles. These are fundamental and important concepts in tantric Buddhism, and they are pervasive throughout the practices.

E Vam is the essential seed syllable or linguistic, mantric representation of the union of masculine and feminine principles. E symbolizes the feminine and Vam, symbolizes the masculine.

Mipham Rinpoche refers to this as ‘coalescence’ – the union of relative and ultimate. Another method for accomplishing this is practicing the inseparability of wisdom and method. The idea is integral to both Mahayoga and Anu Yoga. It is contained in Anutaratantra practice.

Feminine Principle in Tantra

Feminine principle is the principle of wisdom. It is the most primordial essence of the universe. The wisdom mind is the self-existing reality. It is awareness that knows its own nature. Feminine principle is related strongly to jnana, or the insight that knows reality itself, the self-existing reality of all things.

It is also called the mother, as it gives birth to the Buddhas. Feminine principle is the liberating method. Through wisdom, the practitioner of this yoga is liberated from the stream of samsara.

The female deity is most frequently depicted with a kapala (skull cup) containing amrita in her left hand. In her right hand is typically a flower, symbolizing compassion, or a kartika (hook knife) symbolizing cutting through to innate purity of reality.

In Vajrayana Buddhism, the kapala, often held by deities like mahasiddhas and dakinis, symbolizes wisdom and knowledge. Practices involving the kapala include the melting of moon drops in the skull, creating a blissful sensation. The kapala is also a representation of lineage transmission during empowerments. Drinking blood from it, often associated with impurity, symbolizes non-discrimination and the yogi’s breakthrough into non-dualism. The dakini’s image, delighting in consuming blood, signifies a perfected yogi dwelling in non-duality, experiencing the union of emptiness and bliss— the highest enlightenment in Vajrayana Buddhism.

The kartika, with its distinctive crescent shape, is a ritual implement used in various Vajrayana practices. Its curved blade symbolizes the severance of attachment and delusion, cutting through the bonds that bind individuals to cyclic existence. In the context of the feminine principle, the kartika is often associated with the dakini, a mystical and enlightened feminine energy.

Dakinis, portrayed as fierce and compassionate, use the hook knife to cut through ignorance and ego, guiding practitioners towards spiritual awakening. The symbology of the kartika emphasizes the transformative power of the feminine principle in Tibetan Buddhism, depicting the dakini’s ability to remove obstacles, liberate beings, and reveal the path to enlightenment through the compassionate act of severing attachments.

Masculine Principle in Tantra

Masculine principle is upayas or skillful means. They are the manifestation of the Mahayana principle of compassion. When compassion enters the Vajrayana, it becomes skillful means. This is the method to liberate other beings, to wake them up to reality, to help them understand the trap of samsara and the path to liberation.

In Tantric Buddhism, the masculine principle is symbolized through ritual implements that play a crucial role in transformative practices. One such implement is the phurba, a ritual dagger or three-sided peg. The phurba, with its blade representing wisdom and its three faces embodying the trikaya (the three bodies of the Buddha), serves as a powerful symbol of the masculine energy’s capacity to conquer obstacles and pierce through ignorance.

Ritual implements, including the vajra and bell, are often used together to embody the union of the masculine and feminine principles in Tantric rituals. The vajra, representing indestructible and compassionate wisdom, is held in the right hand, symbolizing skillful means, while the bell, held in the left hand, symbolizes the feminine wisdom of emptiness. The harmonious use of these ritual implements in Tantric Buddhism signifies the integration of both masculine and feminine energies, leading practitioners towards a profound understanding of reality and the path to enlightenment.

Yab Yum Meditation

Yab Yum is actually a solitary meditation practice for the most part. The meditator, after ngondro and initiation, does the deity practice, visualizing themselves as the deity in yab-yum. (Not all deities are in union.) The practice is meant to purify ordinary conceptions of body and appearance.

Both the deities are considered to be the meditator. In this sense, union means the union of both masculine and feminine energies within the mindstream. If one has only the masculine, skillful means, the lack of wisdom will lead to incorrect action. It will likely reify the self. The feminine principle corrects this, providing wisdom and insight into emptiness.

If the meditator has only feminine principle, the skillful means will be lacking. They will be unable to benefit others properly. Therefore, the practice of yab-yum requires the union of both energies to be complete.

Like a miracle, or ... fate ... she allowed you to show yourself and come closer. A tug, like a piece of thread pulling you towards her. The universe telling you it's alright.

Getting on your knees, you assessed her wounds and saw that they were gun shot wounds. In her wings, her legs, and a great slice across her abdomen.

Her babies had been taken. Only this one was left.

You could see in her eyes the pleading. She was giving you her last child. The only one that hadn't been taken somehow.

One of the smallest creatures you had ever seen emerged from the shell only days later, yawning but covered in gunk.

Tharion looked at you like you were crazy.

"Dragon, sweetheart. A pure fucking dragon."

You gave him an exasperated stare but continued to clean off the lil spikey man. Ignoring Tharion's pleas, you started talking to your new addition to the family. And he started talking back: oh oh no not human speak. But mumbling, chirping and trilling noises. He was not a shapeshifter.

"Not leaving him Tharion and that is that." You said over your shoulder to the Mer who still stood against the doorframe, arms wrapped around his chest.

With a huff as his final protest, he rolled his eyes and mumbled, "fine. But I'm not cleaning up any he decides to set on fire."

You protect the wild animals, and the natural world, bestowing abundance of nature; healing, growing, nurturing. You can feel the trees and hear what they whisper. You are apart of the forest lands.

I know it's not a celebrity's job to get involved with every political issue ect, but what really pisses me off about Taylor Swift is that she's probably one of the only people in the world who would probably face no consequences if she spoke up for Palestine and spoke against israel. She's way too rich and famous to be blacklisted, her fans are too devoted for it to actually make a dent in her sales and career, but no, she only talks political when it's in the safest blandest way possible. Idk why i even expect rich people to care, guess its hard not to get sucked in to the image they try to project of themselves.

This is why celebrity culture needs to be dismantled and either diminished entirely or, not exist at all. Because people with beyond excessive amounts of social and financial capital (because Swift DOES), should say something but the fierce capitalists behind her (and Swift herself) would rather be silent because even if it doesn't break her own bank/lose support from her dedicated fan base, she's still an industry puppet -and I'm sorry, but not sorry I said that.

I won't even forget how Swift benefited from white supremacists supporting her music for years -and she NEVER once spoke out against it (or even after she slowly moved from country to pop), and recently she used her 40 million dollar private jet to see her new boyfriend -the carbon emissions alone for those trips is beyond unethical (and I think she's done this a few times? It's not romantic -it's irresponsible). Let's also not forget how she's only a 'feminist,' when it's yes, 'safe' to do so and in ways that can be commodified and packaged in a way that's acceptable. When she's all for 'women's empowerment,' and the 'queer and trans community,' it's done in a way that is sanitized to the point where it's really superficial and yes -bland. I remember watching a viral tiktok video a while ago where a young woman said Taylor Swift doesn't actually care about feminist issues, but that she uses it for her own gains/benefits.

Billionaires, no matter how 'beloved,' they can be are still problematic. I have said this before, and that includes all pop stars who have amassed wealth in the tens of millions/are billionaires themselves. And for them to do the bare minimum -show support for those suffering in this world, and to not do that is just unconscionable.

Support artists and performers and people in solidarity with Palestine (such as Kehlani) -and those in Gaza on the ground -the journalists and those documenting their lives on social media right now (Motaz, Bisan, Bayan, Mohammad, Hind, and countless others) -amplify their voices and experiences. And for Swifties/those who support Taylor -I hope you understand the importance of accountability, and that complicity is just as evil and inhumane. And if you think that's unfair -then you're aligned with discourses that support ethnic cleansing and imperialist violence.
